memo

Forty years young. Time flies when you’re having fun!

Once upon a time… Two young clothing salesmen happened to meet in a Fort Collins, Colorado, drinking establishment. They bonded over a love of golf and beer, and became best friends. Craig Andrisen and Dave Morton spent a lot of time golfing and palling around in those early years. They both got married and ultimately ended up working for the same clothing store in Denver. They even commuted to the job together. But one day they realized, “We were just young enough, and just broke enough, to come up with the idea of doing our own store.” They told their boss, were fired on the spot and a lifelong partnership was born. Less than a year later, the first Andrisen Morton store opened in downtown Denver. From the beginning, AM differentiated itself from the competition by selling menswear that was a cut above in quality and price, and by focusing on exceptional personal service. “We had no idea what we were doing back then,” recalls Craig. But that obviously didn’t prevent finding success in a very big way. A second Andrisen Morton store was opened in the Denver Tech Center in 1987. Then in 1996, AM was invited to join the prestigious menswear industry group called the Apparel Forum, comprised of the absolute best upscale men’s stores in the country. Through Forum, Craig and Dave enjoyed a post-graduate education in high-end retail operations and marketing. Within a few years, both AM locations were combined into a large, beautiful new landmark store in the Cherry Creek North neighborhood, where we’ve been serving customers across Colorado and the West ever since. Over the years, with Craig as the primary buyer, AM’s offerings evolved from strictly traditional men’s clothing to the latest in men’s style and attitude you’ll find in the store today. (Check out some of this season’s newest arrivals further on in the magazine.) Craig and Dave have created a customer-first culture based on their vision to become the best men’s specialty store in America by serving others. From hiring excellent people to introducing Denver to the world’s finest menswear designers, for them, the journey has always been the destination. Just as men’s style continues to evolve, so does Andrisen Morton. The journey continues. In reflecting on 40 years in business, what we’re really celebrating is you—our customers. Without your support and friendship, this amazing milestone would never have come to pass. Words cannot adequately express how much this humbles us, or how grateful we truly are to be the recipients of such kindness. Thank you, thank you, one and all, from the bottom of our hearts. Here’s to the next 40 years! In gratitude and love, Craig, Lindsay, Dave and John

Though the styles have changed tremendously since 1979 when we opened the doors to our first Andrisen Morton store on 17th and Stout, one thing that hasn’t is we’ve always been ahead of the men’s fashion curve. But just as unchanging as our sartorial expertise is our unparalleled dedication to our customers—and your reciprocal support for us in return. We know we wouldn’t have been here for 40 years if it wasn’t for you, our loyal customers-turned-friends, who for four decades have considered us Denver’s go-to shop for luxury menswear. ANDRISEN MORTON

ASK Andrisen Morton Q: I’ve been living in sneakers all summer, and I dread the thought of squeezing my feet into rigid dress shoes. Any fall footwear options that are both comfortable and stylish? A: Yes! British brand Edward Green & Co. feels your pain and is offering many variations of shoes that combine beautiful soft leather uppers with a comfort bottom— and they’re all perfect for tackling the chillier weather. The brand’s shoes, available at Andrisen Morton this season, can be styled smart-casual with jeans or dressed up with suits, like the Ravenstone monk boot or the Piccadilly loafer. No matter which pair suits your tastes and lifestyle, all Edward Green & Co. shoes are relaxed and just as comfortable as your summer footwear options… and will notably elevate your style.

The Godfather…of PREMIUM DENIM

Denim was once the stuff for weekends and casual Fridays. But today, a great-fitting pair of jeans with superb construction and contemporary styling is as much a wardrobe cornerstone as a navy suit. Enter AG. This Los Angeles-based denim company offers historically high-quality, long-lasting garments and produces them in an environmentally friendly way—AG uses just .3 percent of the water that a typical denim manufacturer uses per day. So, what does AG stand for? Atlanta, Georgia? Attorney General? Avant-Garde? Andy Garcia? Nope, the brand is named after the Italian fashion designer and reputed godfather of premium denim— Adriano Goldschmied. Come into Andrisen Morton to try on AG’s latest styles, and we think you’ll agree they feel Absolutely Great.

Herno IS HOT Named after a small river in Italy, Herno made its mark in the 1940s and ’50s by manufacturing trench coats suited for the humid and rainy climate around Lake Maggiore. Fast forward 70-plus years and the brand—still renowned for its Italian craftsmanship—has become synonymous with contemporary outerwear that includes luxury coats, parkas, puffers, bombers and other jackets for men and women. Like its original trench coat, Herno’s modern outerwear is constructed using innovative fabrics, meaning their pieces will protect you splendidly from the elements. The stylish designs and use of the finest materials available have helped the brand soar in popularity in the U.S. Herno President Claudio Marenzi has said, “Fashion for the Italian people is a part of life. It is something that we have in our blood.” We couldn’t agree more. Browse their fall/winter 2019 collection of lightweight, highly-insulating, fashionforward coats in a variety of hues at Andrisen Morton today.

If you’re a big fan of Kiton, you’ll be really excited about Andrisen Morton’s newest brand, Marco Pescarolo. A cousin to the Paone family, which founded Kiton more than 60 years ago, Marco Pescarolo is one of Kiton’s suppliers for jeans and casual pants. But the Naples-based pantmaker has had his own eponymous line of luxury denim and trousers since 1999, and we’re proud to offer it for the first time this season. Marco Pescarolo trousers and five-pocket pants are defined by their slim, flattering fit with an emphasis on comfort. Each pair has a touch of whimsy too—embroidered on each item is the mask of Pulcinella, a mischievous puppet wellknown in Neapolitan theater. Best yet, Marco Pescarolo pants have the same luxurious feel as Kiton jeans at a price point that fits everyone. Stop by the store to try on a pair for yourself and see why they’re one of our favorites this season.

A Collector’s CELLAR Every collection has a Holy Grail, the Gutenberg Bible or the Honus Wagner baseball card of the hobby. Lifelong wine connoisseurs and budding oenophiles have their dreams too, and author and renowned sommelier Chiara Giannotti has put together the ultimate vino checklist in The Perfect Wine Cellar: The Ultimate Guide

for Great Wine Collectors (Rizzoli, $62). But this tome is much more than a catalogue of extraordinary—and often rare—vintages. Giannotti takes readers through the history and culture of wine collecting and explains industry trends and traditions. If you’re looking to up the value and prestige of your collection, the book also has plenty of expert guidance and inspiration for building an enviable cellar, including which vineyards and auction houses typically have hidden treasures. By the volume’s end, The Perfect Wine Cellar proves that collecting is more than just a hobby—it’s about passion, sophisticated flavors and investments in pleasure.

the right way, not RIGHT AWAY “Customizing” a garment in a hurry online doesn’t make it custom-made for you. Try true made-to-measure instead. By Darius Amos Seeing is believing, as they say—but not when you’re purchasing a made-to-measure suit. Any garment can look good on a computer screen, and it may be stunning hanging in your closet. But will it feel great when you try it on? In the world of custom suiting, your sense of touch will respond acutely to the differences between a garment handsewn by a tailor and a piece manufactured quickly by an internet company. Of course, some online businesses create excellent products using your measurements—which you record and supply yourself—and a dozen or so personalized elements. But a few clicks of a mouse can’t guarantee the use of impeccable fabrics, a perfect fit and a selection of details that runs the gamut. These are things, however, an Andrisen Morton customer has come to expect. For decades, our team of made-to-measure experts has been customizing the finest garments precisely to your specifications and personal taste, from size and fit right down to jacket lapel style and thread color—all the sartorial details that matter. Looking and feeling your best is the name of the game, and great fabric will always drape better than an inferior product. Bonus: A well-made fabric is softer and stronger and will outlast a stiffer and cheaper cloth (which many online retailers use), making a suit custom-made by us the wiser investment. Our made-to-measure program uses fabrics from the world’s finest mills such as Loro Piana and Ermenegildo Zegna, which source the best raw materials like wool from Australia and New Zealand. The bottom line? You’ll get a suit made from the highest-quality fabric that’ll make you look

even more handsome. Another bonus: A tailor-made suit will come with an ample fabric reserve (in case you have to make anything bigger down the road), while a garment made online will cut costs and minimize the use of material when possible. We also ensure proper fit. Yes, an online suit maker creates jackets, pants and vests based on the exact measurements you provide, and your order may fit like a glove—that is, until you start moving. Our made-to-measure experts consider your daily activities so that your pieces continue to look good when you’re doing everyday things. Sitting at a conference table or reaching for a book on the top shelf? Our tailors guarantee you don’t have to worry about a collar gap or your jacket bunching at the neck. You can also distinguish one of our made-to-measure suits from an online customized garment when you feel the inside of the jacket. For the lining, we suggest high-end silk or cotton versus inexpensive options like polyester blends, which can overheat the wearer. The interlining (the material between the suit’s inner and outmost fabrics) should be sewn in place, rather than glued or fused. An easy way to determine the quality is to pinch the upper layer of the fabric: A superior garment will be soft and flexible; an inexpensive suit will feel stiff and thick. Our style pros and tailors will take nearly two dozen of your measurements and personalized options (handmade buttonholes, anyone?) to create a piece that looks and feels just right. So log off your computer and give made-to-measure a try. We promise you’ll never look back.

Aston Martin puts a charge in the luxury market with its first electric super sedan. By Darius Amos

Already one of the coolest action heroes in Hollywood history, James Bond might be adding badass eco-warrior to his calling card—thanks to his new environment-friendly car. British manufacturer Aston Martin’s latest production vehicle, the limited edition Rapide E, is fully electric and rumored to be 007’s ride in the next Bond film due to hit screens in 2020. Talk about an electrifying flick. Spoiler alert: The Rapide E will challenge the iconic Tesla Model S for supremacy in the electric super sedan class. The crowded field— which includes entries from luxury makers like Porsche and Jaguar— has been dominated by Tesla, but Aston Martin wants to rain on the parade. The Rapide E is a reimagined version of Aston Martin’s old V-12 gas guzzlers. This reincarnation boasts an aggressive profile similar to its siblings, the Superleggera and the DB11, and is outfitted with two rear-mounted motors that run on a 65.0-kWh battery pack. That package can reach 100 percent power in three hours, the result of 800volt fast-charging technology. What does all that translate to in terms of performance? Aston Martin says the Rapide E’s motors produce 602 horsepower and a 0-60 time of around four seconds. (Of note,

36

|

AND.fw19.Auto.indd 36

engineers say the Rapide E will perform the same regardless of battery power, unlike other electric vehicles.) On a full charge, the battery has a range of about 200 miles, or a one-way road trip from New York to Baltimore. If you’re making that trip, switch the car into touring mode (one of three) for a smoother, relaxing ride. There’s even more to love inside the cabin, which Aston Martin execs say separates their brand from all others. The four-door Rapide E, which will hover around $300,000, has all the amenities associated with the Aston Martin name. The black leather-wrapped driver’s dashboard features gauge clusters that do more than reveal speed and gear: There are indicators for “green” measurables like energy consumption and power levels as well. But you can find out if your car needs charging even if you’re away from it—a smartphone app will give you remote access to all of your Rapide E’s vitals. The interior also has automatic climate control, LED lighting, premium sound and navigation with a 6.5-inch screen infotainment system, plush leather seats with electric blue trim and much more. Of course, James Bond’s movie version will come with weaponry—but this time around, he’ll be fighting the bad guys in a zero-emissions vehicle.

SKI & STAY in style

Six new luxe hotels promise to expand your idea of what a ski resort can be—even if you’ve already been to the big-name spots. By Everett Potter

yo

For many of us, the formula for an unforgettable ski vacation is simple: challenging slopes, scenic splendor, a measure of charm and luxury in the base village and, not least, a lodging experience that sparkles with the latest in the art and science of luxury resort hospitality. If you’re in this group, there are half a dozen spots here just waiting to round out your ski education. Though some have been welcoming skiers for almost a century, all have recently opened brand-new luxury resort hotels. See which ones you need to add to your travel agenda. After all, doesn’t a day of super skiing deserve a night of unparalleled comfort?

FLIMS, SWITZERLAND

Flims, like its sister resorts Laax and Falera, is not exactly high on most American lists of hip European ski resorts. That’s a shame, especially for snowboarders, because this area in the Glarus Alps in the heart of Switzerland offers some of the best terrain for shredding in the world. It has a serious terrain park, as well as a half pipe and 136 miles of varied terrain, enough to keep snowboarders of all stripes happy, with ample backcountry for those who need an extra challenge. The resort, which has long been pretty much the domain of Swiss and German skiers and riders, elevated its lodging offerings this past winter with the opening of The Hide Hotel Flims. The guest rooms and public spaces of this member of Design Hotels are a far cry from the Heidi chalets of yore, with striking geometric touches courtesy of designer Erik Nissen Johansen and an overall feeling that is more Zurich chic than Alpine. Swiss star chef Andi Tschanz oversees the two restaurants, The Deli and The Grill, while a 10,000-square-foot spa signifies that wellness is taken seriously here.

MEGÈVE, FRANCE

You may have skied trendy and massive Courchevel or Val d’Isère, but you can’t say you’ve really skied France until you’ve hit the slopes of Megève. Located in the nation’s southeastern section near the Italian and Swiss borders, Megève is an intimate resort that emerged as a fashionable ski destination way back in the 1920s. The Rothschild family in particular set the high-born rustic tone here several generations ago, opening the Domaine du Mont d’Arbois hotel to house their friends. The property will be reborn as a Four Seasons resort later this year. The attractions for a certain set of Parisians are the uncrowded slopes, the vistas of neighboring Mont Blanc, impeccable grooming and a medieval town center that has a bevy of rustic chic restaurants. If you’ve skied Europe and hated the mad scramble at lift lines and runs that are as jammed as the Champs-Élysées on a Friday afternoon, Megève is for you. It’s a mountain of relaxed runs and long lunches. That said, not everything is old-fashioned here. The newly opened Le Cerf Amoureux is a chalet-style hotel, cool and understated, with bleached wood and neutral fabrics. Designed by Lisa Konckier, who is responsible for Paris’ Hôtel de Nell, the property has just 12 rooms. Mont Blanc views, a yoga studio, a spa and a screening room aid with post-ski relaxation.

HOTEL LE MASSIF, COURMAYEUR, ITALY

While many Americans have skied chic Cortina in the Dolomites, far fewer have hit the slopes of Courmayeur. Located on the Italian side of the Mont Blanc tunnel, which connects to Chamonix in France, the lifts top out at 9,000 feet and offer 25 miles of pistes, which are some of the sunniest in Europe. If you’re an expert skier, head to Entrèves to ride a three-stage cable car, the Skyway Monte Bianco, to the top of Punta Helbronner. Not only are the views of Mont Blanc amazing from the 11,400-foot summit, but you’ll also have access to seriously challenging off-piste routes. Courmayeur is a lot smaller and quieter than neighboring Chamonix and has long been the lair of the Milanese social set. The main drag, Via Roma, is where you’ll find the bars, restaurants and shops. As with Cortina, many of the well-heeled Italian guests never seem to ski but are more interested in the stylish evening passeggiata. Check into the newly opened Hotel Le Massif in the heart of that town, a few minutes’ walk from the lifts. A “Leading Hotels of the World” offering, Le Massif was designed by Italian architects Fabrizio Gandolfo and Inart Studio. The décor of the 78 guest rooms and suites utilizes wood paneling and stone, and the hotel has a dedicated ski concierge, a spa that offers “forest bathing,” two bars and two restaurants. A great guest perk is access to the private, slope-side restaurant and club, La Loge du Massif.

ALTA, UTAH, U.S.A.

Deer Valley and Park City have their charms, but Alta is the bomb. Just 40 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City, this resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon is treasured for its simplicity, loyal skiers and powder that can easily exceed 500 inches in a good year. The fact that it still bans snowboarders is a major attraction for many skiers. Linked to neighboring Snowbird, which does permit snowboarding, it provides some of the best and most challenging terrain in the U.S. “If you see it, you can ski it” is the rule of thumb. Skiers spend all day in the trees and then enjoy a low-key après-ski scene. Devotees stay at lodges such as the Alta Lodge and the Rustler Lodge, where the staff knows them by name and they can expect the same laid-back comforts year after year. What Alta has not been known for is luxury or change, but now both have arrived. The completely reborn Snowpine Lodge, built at the site of the original Snowpine Lodge from 1941, opened last January with 58 luxurious rooms and suites, many with balconies overlooking the surrounding canyon. The first true luxury resort at Alta, Snowpine Lodge offers ski-in/ski-out access via the new Snowpine ski lift.

JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING, U.S.A.

There are skiers who have never skied Jackson Hole because they’ve heard it’s a big mountain that is really tough to navigate. The truth is that it is a really tough mountain to ski well. But every skier who’s at least an intermediate will have a memorable time at this monster in the heart of the Tetons. The daredevils can make the leap off Corbet’s Couloir or choose from several dozen chutes and double black-diamond bump runs to test their mettle. There’s also the matter of 3,000 acres of backcountry skiing available for the big dogs. The rest of us can enjoy some exceptionally long groomed runs that start at the 10,400foot summit and allow us to really get our speed on. All of this earns one time in downtown Jackson, where cowboys meet trust funders. Go shoot pool at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, eat at some of the finest restaurants in the Rockies, such as Rendezvous Bistro or Bin22, and go shopping for custom cowboy boots. The Caldera House, which opened this past winter, was built in a sweet spot at the base of the Jackson Hole Tram to the tune of $100 million. It offers just eight suites, some as large as 5,000 square feet. It also houses a revived Old Yellowstone Garage, a favorite Jackson Hole eatery. The design collective Commune is responsible for the look, a mélange of stone, glass and wood that is comforting and avant-garde at the same time.

SNOWMASS, COLORADO, U.S.A.

This one is 10 miles down valley from Aspen but it might as well be a world away. The family-friendly resort has never had the glitz and fame of its better-known sister. Yet it easily outpaces Aspen in terms of terrain and expansiveness. Snowmass is a beast of a mountain, with some 3,362 acres with varied terrain for every skier or snowboarder. Skiers who get bored in Aspen after two days can spend a week here and still find new runs on their last day. For a long time Snowmass lacked an inviting base village, a welcoming place where you’d want to spend the night instead of fleeing back up the road to Aspen. Now, after years of making do with a hodgepodge collection of condos and shops, Snowmass has that village, a $600 million development that’s heavy on luxury and skier-friendly amenities. One of the key components is the Limelight Hotel, with its LA vibe, an indoor/outdoor pool, a climbing wall and a cool design that would not be out of place in Aspen itself. More restaurants, shops and lodging are set to open this winter, as Snowmass finally gets its moment in the sun.

Face

TIME

Should one gender have a monopoly on great skin? Heck, no! Gents, consider these four treatments. Cosmetic procedures need not be stereotyped as a feminine thing—guys want to look rested and feel their best too. Here are four treatments dudes are using to fight aging and revitalize their skin, no stigma attached:

FACIALS

Maintaining a daily skincare routine is important, but sometimes your face just needs a refresher only a facial can provide. And guys are getting more and more on board with the idea—according to a recent study from the International Spa Association, 47 percent of spa-goers are male, compared with 31 percent 10 years ago. During a facial, an esthetician will assess your skin’s specific needs, exfoliate dead skin cells, extract clogged pores, then moisturize and massage your face, neck and shoulders. Please go to your appointment freshly shaven and stubble-free. Frequency should be at least once per season, or ideally every six weeks.

54

|

AND.fw19.Grooming.indd 54

FILLERS

These days, men of all ages are opting for injections to make their skin look more youthful or to prevent fine lines from developing. While a boost to the lips and cheeks may be more popular with the ladies, both genders get dermal fillers injected into their foreheads, the area between the eyes, on lower lids or into their smile lines. And since males’ skin is thicker and muscle mass denser than females’, higher dosages are required to achieve the desired look. Just don’t let your doc go overboard, as overfilling tends to make a guy’s facial features look too puffy and feminine. Touch-ups are typically needed every six to nine months.

RADIOFREQUENCY SKIN TIGHTENING

While a regular facial will leave you looking supple and refreshed, a radiofrequency facial creates a tight and toned look—eventually. For this procedure a machine is heated to a comfortable 38–40 degrees Fahrenheit and placed onto skin to increase collagen production, which in turn tightens, firms and lifts sagging areas on the face, neck and yes, even the rest of the body. It’s pain-free, quick and requires zero recovery time. (You can even bang this out on your lunch break.) But be aware that one treatment will hardly make a difference—six to 12 sessions over a few months are recommended to achieve optimal results.

MICRONEEDLING

An alternative to lasers and injectables, this is the fastest-growing cosmetic procedure for men in 2019, according to the website RealSelf. A practitioner applies topical numbing cream and then uses a tool with thin needles that create tiny punctures in the skin’s surface to regenerate collagen and elastin, thus reducing cellulite and stretch marks, minimizing pores and erasing scarring. Skin will undeniably appear more radiant with just one treatment, but a few sessions are preferable. Just how many and how often depend on your skin type and sensitivity, so talk to your doc. And this should go without saying, but all of these treatments should be done by a professional esthetician or board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

JAPAN!

Two fish-loving nations get together in the kitchen, with delicious results. By Donna Rolando

There are chefs who cringe at the word “fusion” for its whiff of shallow trendiness. But whatever you call it, tasty things can happen when two cuisines collide, and one of the hottest such combos these days is Peruvian/Japanese fare. After making waves in Europe, this food phenomenon is catching on in cities like Miami and New York, and one taste of it will probably make you glad the two traditions met. This may be just the gastronomic sizzle you need to lift you out of your dining rut or make an impression on date night. The name Nikkei describes a population of Japanese who immigrated to Peru in the late 19th century, along with their descendants. But in time the word has also come to signify their cuisine itself, a reflection of life and culture built into recipes over generations that runs deeper than the word fusion might suggest. It is no stranger to mainstream Peruvian kitchens. We know that mere proximity—as with oil and water—does not make the right mix for any recipe, let alone many. So what is it about the marriage of spicy Peruvian and delicate Japanese cuisine that warrants your taste buds’ immediate attention? The answer lies under the sea. The two cultures have in common a heavy reliance on fresh fish in the diet, and the Japanese have put their own take on Peruvian ingredients, such as limes, corn, aji chili peppers, yucca and potatoes. Even the Peruvian staple ceviche has been reshaped in Japanese kitchens in a process that shaves hours off its prep time. Yes, Nikkei has flourished in the South American melting pot that is Peru, a land known for a bounty of cultural influences in the kitchen that have contributed to its reputation for world-class fine dining. The fact that the Nikkei eatery Maido in Lima recently ranked No. 7 on the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list, judged by a panel of 1,000+ culinary experts, says a lot. Yet if you live in the States, Nikkei is likely to have escaped your radar or hidden itself on the menu under the heading of Japanese-style dishes. (Do Japanese curry-filled empanadas ring any bells? If so, you may have already sampled Nikkei.) Surprisingly for a country always searching for the next food revolution, America has been slow to jump on this culinary bandwagon, but restaurants such as Midtown Manhattan’s Sen Sakana (which translates to “one thousand fish”) are working hard to change that. Step inside Sen Sakana and you’ll find flavorful combinations, such as crispy seafood with salsa criolla or quinoa-crusted chicken breast with black vinegar nanban sauce, and sides that include corn, asparagus and Japanese sweet potato. The fact that octopus and eel are featured on the menu is a mark of the Japanese influence. The Japanese raw fish dish tiradito is an example of where “sashimi meets ceviche” in a Peruvian yellow pepper mango sauce. If Nikkei has more history than some combo cuisines, it’s also true that it’s still evolving. Says Sen Sakana: “It is a cuisine whose identity is constantly being redefined and enriched, making it an exciting one to work with.”

FOR.fw19.Food.indd 56

OTHER FUSIONS TO TRY Peruvian/Japanese cuisine, known as Nikkei, is just one example of the creative blending of two food traditions. These other cultural combinations are also worth sampling at some mealtime very soon: GREEK/AMERICAN What it is: The evolution of Greek cuisine prepared by Greek-Americans and their offspring under the influence of American culture. What to try: A Greek-American gyro with meat (perhaps lamb), olive oil, tomatoes, onions, french fries and tzatziki sauce (yogurt, garlic and cucumber) served as we’ve come to expect it to be—in a pita so crammed that two hands are required. A Greek-American taverna is also a good place to discover pastitsio, baked layers of thick pasta with ground meat; or souvlaki, chunks of meat and sometimes veggies served on a skewer. EAST ASIAN/ITALIAN What it is: It’s not just about the noodles, although that is an obvious connection between Italy and East Asian lands such as Japan or China. A culinary philosophy is also shared: letting ingredients stand out for their own qualities. What to try: Spaghetti with miso or linguine with tomato and uni (Japanese for sea urchin), the latter being no stranger to today’s restaurant menus across the country. Or go beyond noodles to indulge in a head-on fish prepared with Italian Castelvetrano olives, capers, Cantonese ginger and scallion. LEBANESE/MEXICAN What it is: Lebanese immigrants to Mexico have fused their culinary style into Mexican cuisine, even creating their own taco—the al pastor—among many novel dishes. What to try: Don’t be surprised on your travels through Mexico to find Lebanese-inspired kibbeh, a turnover-like fried dough fritter packed with minced ground beef and chopped onion. Or you can sample taquitos de parra, made of grape or cabbage leaves stuffed with ground meat, rice and garlic. JAMAICAN/PHILIPPINE What it is: The culinary influence of Asians who immigrated to Jamaica over the last century. What to try: Whole jerk roast duck flavored with Scotch bonnet peppers and allspice.

REIGNS

Ready to venture into something new in red wine? Let’s make it something you’ll enjoy. By Josh Sens Stop us if you’ve had this experience before: You’re browsing in a wine shop or flipping through a wine list, and suddenly it hits you. You’re dizzied by the options. The shelves are jammed with bottles. The list goes on for pages. Making a selection is a lot more complicated than simply choosing white or red. “There are literally thousands of grape varietals out there, with names that start with every letter of the alphabet,” says Rick Arline, sommelier and wine director of Auburn, a celebrated fine dining restaurant in Los Angeles. “Even if you are pretty well versed in wine, it can be enough to make your head spin.” One way to proceed is to stick with what you know, the tried-and-true varietals you’ve long enjoyed. Or you could embrace the spirit of adventure and opt for a wine you’ve never had before. While beloved grapes, such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot and pinot noir, all have distinctive traits, they also share a kinship with other, less familiar varietals. Up for something new? We’ve composed a list of tempting alternatives, relying on Arline as our guide.

ZINFANDEL: Planted in roughly 10 percent of California vineyards, Zinfandel has been around the Golden State so long it’s had a chance to become misunderstood. “Some people think of it as a jammy, gloopy wine for barbecues,” Arline says. “But it can be very elegant and nuanced, with the structure and extraction that people like in cabernet sauvignon, but also leaner and fresher.” Joseph Swan Bastoni Zinfandel, 2013. $29.99 SYRAH: A wonderfully versatile varietal, Syrah, Arline says, can be by turns powerful and savory, or round and fruit-driven. “It’s a little different every time,” he says. “But it’s always unmistakably Syrah.” Central Coast Group Project White Hawk Vineyard Syrah, 2013. $75 GARNACHA: Blended with Tempranillo, the dominant grape, this Rioja features complex notes of ripe plum. It’s dark and moody, and “is for people who love cab and want those qualities without paying extra for the new oak,” says Arline. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva, 2006. $40

SANGIOVESE: Produced in the vineyards outside the Tuscan town of Montalcino, some 50 miles south of Florence, Brunello di Montalcino is made with Sangiovese grapes and is one of Italy’s most prized wines. Soft and rich, it has a supple beauty that Arline says is reminiscent of the best merlots. Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino Annata, 2010. $125 CARIGNAN: Fruit-forward with hints of spice, this food-friendly varietal finds many expressions but none better than the wines of the Corbières appellation in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. Clos de l’Anhel Les Terrassettes, 2016. $17.99 TEMPRANILLO: Smooth and fruit-forward with a structure that can range from mediumto-full-bodied, Tempranillo has a quiet elegance, like merlot, that can take on great complexity as it ages. Alión Ribera del Duero, 2013. $102

DOLCETTO D’ALBA: Dolcetto means “little sweet one” in Italian. That doesn’t mean it’s cloying, just often low in acid, light and bright, and wonderfully versatile with food. Vietti Dolcetto d’Alba Tre Vigne, 2017. $19.99 BARBERA D’ALBA: Deep in color, high in acid and low in tannins, this Italian varietal is often more full-bodied than pinot noir, but makes a graceful dinnertime companion. Borgogno Barbera d’Alba, 2017. $24 GAMAY: A close cousin to pinot noir, gamay grows next door to Burgundy in France’s Beaujolais region. The wines it yields are light-bodied and fruity, often with a refreshing tartness. They can be especially delicious when slightly chilled. Domaine Marcel Lapierre ‘Raisins Gaulois’ Vin de France, 2017. $17.99

TIPS

SHIRT FRONT

Every man can look incredible in a tuxedo—as long as it’s the right one. By Darius Amos Most of us aren’t walking the red carpet or accepting an Academy Award. But dressing to the nines for a wedding or gala is something we’ve all done—and it’s likely you’ll attend another formal event where looking sharp is part of the agenda. Of course, you don’t get to wear a tuxedo every day (not even George Clooney does that), so when you invest in the ultimate piece of formal wear, its style and fit should be nothing shy of impeccable. Consider these things before you suit up for something special:

A shirt front with no placket and concealed buttons is clean and contemporary while a pleated front worn with studs adds textural interest. For a classic, elegant look, try a smooth bib-front shirt, perhaps in a pique fabric, with room for studs.

JACKET LAPEL

You know the choices: peak, shawl and notch. Wear a silk-faced peak lapel for highly formal occasions and a rounded shawl style when you want to soften your look. While versatile, a notch lapel is the least formal for a tuxedo.

JACKET SHOULDER

Don’t overlook this detail. The padding of your tux jacket should not extend beyond the tip of your shoulders (no shoulder divot). If it does, your jacket is too big.

JACKET CUT

While you can’t go wrong with a traditional-cut jacket, a modern fit, which is trimmer through the chest and shoulder, offers fashion-forward styling and a flattering silhouette—and it’s still appropriate for any black-tie event.

SLEEVE LENGTH

When paired with a properly fitted shirt, the jacket sleeve should show a half-inch of the shirt cuff—just enough for others to see your cuff links.

JACKET LENGTH

We’ll work with you if you’re an NBA center, but for the regular guy, the piece should cover your backside. Another guide: With your arms at your side, the jacket should end between your thumb’s knuckle and base.

PANT LEG WIDTH

Find a cut that flatters your waist, thighs and calves. Pay attention to how the fabric drapes—anything too tight will create wrinkles, while too much material will be baggy.

PANT LEG LENGTH

Pants should have half or no break. See your tailor immediately if they are bunching at your ankles (or if your ankles are showing). The half break is the standard, showing a slight dent where the hem rests on the top of the shoe.

Patent loafers and oxfords, traditionally worn with a tux, are best suited for the most formal events. Both styles in suede or polished leather will give you a lowkey look.
