It’s no secret that Bergenites pay some of the highest taxes in the country, but despite that notoriety, the county’s population over the past decade has been on the rise. The summer of 2020 will be remembered for many reasons, one of them being the vast number of folks fleeing New York City’s boroughs in favor of New Jersey’s suburban areas, including Bergen. According to NJ Realtors, single-family homes for sale in Bergen this past October (the most up-to-date stats available at press time) were on the market for an average of 46 days. When you compare that number with the 61-day average logged in 2019, it’s apparent that buyers are snatching up houses here faster than before. COVID and safety have plenty to do with the exodus from NYC, but so does the allure of our county. Longtime residents know what Bergen offers: Our towns have a wealth of beautiful property, abundant municipal and emergency services and top schools. For our new neighbors and those still exploring the county, The BERGEN Guide is a handy resource to, well, guide you as you make yourself at home. This booklet contains a broad directory of all the places you need to know: hospitals, entertainment, coffeeshops, restaurants and more. It also provides you—whether you’ve been a resident for two months or two decades—a quick crash course on Bergen history: The old landmarks on page 10 might conjure some memories, while the mystery location on page 64 can teach you about a significant date in the county’s record. Of course, many businesses continue to open and close because of the ongoing pandemic. If you see during your travels throughout the county that one of your favorite shops isn’t listed in this year’s Guide, please tell me about it so we can include it in next year’s edition. Five landmarks helped give our area its distinctive character— until they vanished. The public sights we pass by every day have a feel of permanence about them, but it’s a deceptive feel. Sometimes, for one reason or another, their physical lifespan comes to an end—like those of New York City’s old Penn Station or its World Trade Center—and they live on only in our memory. How many of these Bergenarea landmarks do you recall?
PALISADES AMUSEMENT PARK Long before American Dream Mall there was the Palisades Amusement Park. In the late 19th century, a scenic area between Fort Lee and Cliffside Park thrived as a simple picnic hub, but in 1908, rides and other family-friendly attractions were built there, followed by the world’s largest outdoor salt-water pool in 1913. Developers built up the property even more, and the park had its heyday between 1947 and 1971. It even achieved national prominence through the Freddy Cannon song “Palisades Park.” However, it closed in 1971 to make room for high-rise luxury apartments.

Before and during World War I, America’s filmmaking capital wasn’t Hollywood; it was Fort Lee. But California’s sunnier climate beckoned, as did its more favorable legal environment, and the movies moved west. Several studio buildings were still standing when The New Movie Magazine noted mournfully in a 1929–30 picture spread that the town’s “studios, once the center of the industry, are falling in ruins.” Today, says Nelson Page, president of the Fort Lee Film Commission, “there’s nothing left of the 17 studios that populated Fort Lee.” William Fox’s studio on the corner of Main Street and Linwood Avenue, for instance, is long gone—its grounds have become the site of the Fort Linwood Gardens Apartments.

Now home to residential properties on Racetrack Road, this bucolic street connecting Ho-Ho-Kus and Ridgewood used to feature a bustling racetrack. It was built in the late 1860s and functioned as a track, the home of a horseriding club and, eventually, as a place to host town fairs as well as car races. Its last race took place on July 4, 1938, when two cars collided and veered off the track into the crowd. The accident killed 10-year-old Ridgewood resident Robert Thompson and injured 18 other bystanders, one of whom died of his injuries a few days later. The result: a shutdown of the track and a new law prohibiting car racing in Ho-Ho-Kus.
WOR-TV TRANSMITTER A bit farther east in Hudson County’s North Bergen stood a 760-foot-tall auxiliary television transmitter used for broadcasting on WOR-TV, channel 9, which, when it was built in 1949, was the tenthtallest man-made structure in the world. A small aircraft crashed into the tower in 1956, resulting in the death of six people and the ultimate dismantling of the tower. WWOR-TV, which added its second “W” in 1987, now operates as My9NJ.

NORTH JERSEY RAPID TRANSIT IN RIDGEWOOD In the early 1900s, when few people could afford automobiles, a highspeed electric trolley called the North Jersey Rapid Transit was erected from Paterson up to Suffern, N.Y., with in-between stops in Fair Lawn, Glen Rock, Ridgewood, Ramsey, Mahwah and other towns. A fatal 1911 crash between two cars going in opposite directions, coupled with the Public Service bus route running parallel, led to the demise of NJRT in 1928. In 1968, former conductor E. J. Quinby published Interurban Interlude: A History of the North Jersey Rapid Transit Company, which delves deep into the trolley’s fascinating past.
