Aren’t we lucky? Putting together one of BERGEN’s Home Issues, I get to experience vicariously the thrill of houses transformed to meet a new need, a new mood, a new epoch in a family’s life—and you get to enjoy the results in our revealing photos.
We can share the joy, for example, of Glen Rock empty nesters who took this new phase of life as their cue not to downsize, but to modernize (page 40). Guided by Ridgewood-based designer Laura DiGiacomo, they dispensed with dark, dated décor and chose brighter hues and tantalizing textures. And their five-bedroom colonial now joyfully reflects their extensive travels.
Another world-traveling couple wanted to redo their mid-century Ramsey home, but still keep the many things they liked about it (page 48). Designer Cynthia Peralta-Brito judiciously honored both goals, invoking their beloved Paris with distinctive blue floral wallpaper in the powder room. For the kitchen, the designer reports, a brighter, more contemporary feel required “just making a few simple changes.”
For another family, transoceanic inspiration came not from Paris but from Ireland, where the man has roots—we’re privileged to share his excitement too. This home in Wayne (page 52), its renovation masterminded by Waldwick designer Anthony Passanante, now features an authentic Irish pub with oak cabinetry. Behind the bar there’s a piece of slate carved into the map of Ireland—“a roof tile from the house that my father grew up in in Ireland,” the homeowner explains.
Then there’s the “family that spends most of their time in Spain.” (We seem to have a theme going here!) When stateside, they hoped to be able to use their backyard in any season—a yard not in Seville or even Santa Monica, but right here in Woodcliff Lake. A recent project has made their dream come true, creating a “staycation paradise” that includes an outdoor kitchen, a firepit, a hot tub—and even a pool. Check it out on page 44.
All this vicarious experience doesn’t make us experts, you and me—I’ll admit that. But we’ve got experts on tap too. On page 56, five top Bergen interior designers offer advice about choosing paints. Take just one issue, for example: the finish. For a given use, do you want flat, matte, satin, eggshell or semi-gloss?
In this magazine I’m also fortunate to be able to present more varied information to help you live the good life here in our much-blessed county, whether it’s recipes for protein-filled salads (page 64), a report on dealing with childhood asthma (page 34) or an inquiry into improving safety for Bergen pedestrians (page 36). And on page 28 you’ll meet chef Christina Miros. Being on TV in a pressure-filled culinary competition is her way of “winding down”— she works as a nurse in a hospital intensive care unit.

Those who started the art of bonsai were talking about “happy little trees” way before the late TV painter Bob Ross made the phrase famous—and many Bergenites are still doing so. That’s because groups like the Bergen Bonsai Society (BBS) embrace the ancient Japanese art of growing and shaping trees, which was developed from a similar practice born during China’s Tang dynasty. To practice it requires patience as well as learned skills in trimming leaves, pruning and wiring branches and roots, clamping trunks and more. The movements and the art itself promote relaxation and spiritual balance, and the result is a perfectly shaped, miniature tree that’s suitable décor for any interior. BBS meets monthly and holds varied workshops to strengthen those skills, whether one is just beginning or has years of experience shaping trees. It also organizes trips to regional bonsai shows and gardens, including a trip to the MidAtlantic Bonsai Societies, April 19–21 in Grantville, Pa.

Like clockwork, crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths start blooming during early spring. They’re our annual reminders that better weather’s on the way and more color is in store for your yard. But if you want to see something durably scenic in your garden, Bruce Rohsler of Rohsler’s Allendale Nursery suggests planting flowering trees this spring—an ideal time to do so.
“Many trees with showy flowers are smaller, including redbud and red buckeye,” he says. “Not only do these trees provide a color accent to your property, they’re good choices for smaller spaces and are safe options to plant near utility lines.” Here are four species he recommends for planting this spring:
• Cherry: “Ornamental cherries have a downward droop and a graceful profile,” Rohsler says, adding that many varieties have a glossy bark and a spectacular array of spring flowers, as seen at Branch Brook Park in Newark.
• Magnolia: This selection (pictured) features large, chalice-shaped flowers. Pink-and-white flowers are most common, but yellow, rose and maroon varieties are also available.
• Dogwood: This native species has beautiful white or pink spring blossoms, but it’s fickle about water—particularly in frequently flooded areas, where the plants struggle. “With proper watering,” our expert says, “your dogwood tree will flourish and bring beauty to your landscape.”
• Eastern redbud: Another tree native to New Jersey, its dense clusters of lavender-pink flowers appear on tree branches before leaves emerge in spring.

The couple had been wanting a dog for several years, and in 2022, they finally decided the time was right. They learned about a litter of toy fox terriers in Ohio that was up for adoption, and they drove hundreds of miles to meet their new furry friends—yes, they brought home two, Enzo and Sophia!
But the family continued to grow. Nearly two years later, the Tirris learned that Enzo and Sophia’s littermate Dante had become available for adoption. “So we flew to Ohio and brought him to live in his forever home with his brother and sister,” Joyce says. “They were thrilled to be reunited, and they love being held and cuddling together.”

Paperwork can be taxing. Tax day (April 15) is approaching, and if you’ve run into a jam, getting an appointment with an accountant right now may be tough. For help, Bergen Volunteers in Hackensack (bergenvolunteers.org) offers free tax prep through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The service is provided by IRS-certified volunteers and is intended for seniors, residents for whom English is a second language and low-income individuals. Don’t pass this up. Among your public library’s many resources is this: Bergen County Cooperative Library card holders can visit their library for free passes that grant free or deeply discounted admission to sites including: Brooklyn Botanic Garden; Children’s Museum of Manhattan; Guggenheim Museum; Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum; Liberty Science Center; Montclair Art Museum; Morris Museum and Storm King Art Center.
Trace your roots. Speaking of libraries, Ridgewood’s is home to more than just books, videos and computers—it’s home base for the Genealogical Society of Bergen County. Before you mail out your DNA for genetic testing, you can fill in the blanks of your family tree using the services here—search billions of records in census data, vital records, directories and photos. Better off shred-ded. Did you unearth old tax forms, medical records and other confidential documents you no longer need?
The Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA) can shred and safely recycle (no identity theft here!) important papers for you at no cost. Local Doctor explains the negative impact that chronic stress has on our bodies, and what she and her team are doing to help those in her care live lives free from pain!
Inflammation is an integral part of your body’s defense system. You twist your ankle stepping off the curb and the area around the injury immediately begins to swell and fill with heat. Blood circulation increases and an army of white blood cells rush to the area to ward off the perceived threat and prevent further injury. The same happens if you cut your foot on a sharp shell while walking the beach, when you get the flu from your children or grandchildren, or if you bump your head on a cabinet door that your spouse forgot to shut.
In acute doses, inflammation is a vital immune response that harnesses the potential to protect us. So why is inflammation always getting a bad rep?
“Unfortunately, this immune response sometimes occurs when it shouldn’t and for longer periods of time than is necessary,” shares Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine in Montclair. “Autoimmune disorders, untreated injuries, exposure to toxins - all of these can be causes for chronic inflammation. The biggest culprit though, is stress.”
Janet D. of Livingston sought treatment at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine after several doctors and specialists were unable to treat what she thought was run-of-the-mill arthritis. “I hurt all the time and while I’ve always managed to get out of bed, some days it felt like getting up in the morning was going to be the hardest thing I did in this life.”

“It’s just not something I normally discuss.” tells Janet. “Especially with people I just met. There are still so many emotions surrounding that day.”
In Janet’s case, this turned out to be vital information. As Dr. Aleksandra shared, stress can be a major contributor to chronic inflammation, and the emotional turmoil from losing a loved one, especially a child, is quite simply unfathomable. Studies have shown that people who have recently lost a loved one have inflammation levels 54% higher than average. And when you consider that chronic inflammation is at the root of major health disorders like heart disease, cancer, obesity, and autoimmune conditions, it’s safe to say that you can quite literally die from a broken heart.
Of course, inflammation caused by stress goes way beyond grief and loss. How similar is an intensive care unit to a televised cooking competition? More than you’d think, says Christina Miros. She’s an ICU nurse at a large level 1 trauma center who grew up in Dumont and now lives in River Vale with her fiancé and her 10-year-old daughter. She is also a contestant on the third season of Fox’s Next Level Chef, a cooking competition show presented, and in part judged, by British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. Miros became captivated with food as a child in a large, first-generation Greek family, and the love deepened as she traveled to Arizona and Miami during college. She planned on going to culinary school in Paris, but those plans were put on hold for 10 years when she discovered she was pregnant. Now, though she still hasn’t made it to school in Paris, she’s living that culinary dream. Next Level Chef, which is shot in Dublin, pits professional, “influencer” and home chefs against each other. As the weeks stretch on and Miros remains a contestant, we can only ask: How far will she go?
How did you get scouted for Next Level Chef?
I Googled it! It took me to an application, which I was actually worried was a scam at first. The whole thing was a lengthy process; all the questions were very in-depth. Two days later, I was contacted by a casting agent, and then I waited four weeks for the network to get back to me.
After that, I was in the semi-finals and needed to do medical and psychological exams—yes, really! They only let me know for sure two weeks before I had to fly to Dublin.
We need to ask: what Gordon Ramsay is like.
Well, people say not to meet your idols, but he is just the most phenomenal human being. There’s a magnetism to him, and he’s got a great energy. He’s very gentle and calm in the way he speaks with you. He made me feel comfortable in a very high-stress environment.
What was your favorite behind-the-scenes moment?
Being with the other contestants during these long days at very close quarters really bonded us. We all got very close.
Are you still in touch with them?
Yes! All of the top 15 of us are in a group text, and it’s active constantly.
What was your favorite part of filming?
The adrenaline. It was so much fun. And having a chance to be educated by these world-renowned chefs was priceless.
And the worst?
It was incredibly taxing emotionally, mentally and physically. I think people watch from their couches and pass a lot of judgment, but it’s very hard. Being away from your family must have been difficult.
Yes. But my fiancé Steve and my daughter were
incredibly supportive. My daughter was excited, and we figured out a routine to deal with the time-zone difference. When I woke up and went to start filming, I would record a video message and send it to her to watch when she woke up before school. She would be getting home from school right as I finished up filming for the day, so we would get to talk before I went to bed. Then, before she went to bed, she would send me a video message for me to watch when I woke up.
Is there a challenge you’re particularly proud of overcoming on the show?
During the Greek challenge week, I was put into an elimination round against one of the professional chefs. I was so nervous—I think I was put into this elimination to make me face those fears. Once I did, I was calm and confident. I went up against a pro, and I beat her. I rose to the occasion and kicked butt.
Do you see any similarities between being an ICU nurse and working in a kitchen?
So many. You use a lot of the same skills and characteristics as an ICU nurse and a chef. You must prioritize tasks. There’s also organization, thinking critically and thinking on your feet. You have no idea what’s going to happen any day in the ICU. It was the same in the competition.
How do you describe your cooking style?
Fresh, approachable, elevated cuisine. I want to be fancy, but still feel familiar to the average home cook. Do you cook with your daughter?
Well, she likes to crack eggs! [Laughs.] It’s not really her thing. She’s actually a very picky eater. What’s next?
I am doing pop-up dinners all around New Jersey, and I am going to do more with the other contestants, so keep an eye out for that.

ASTHMA IS THE MOST COMMON CHRONIC ILLNESS OF CHILDHOOD, BUT IT NEEDN’T DEFINE ANY CHILD’S LIFE.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 6.5 percent of U.S. children have asthma, a chronic condition that inflames and narrows the airways in the lung and can make breathing a struggle.
A bad asthma attack can be dangerous and also traumatic for parent and child. The Society of Pediatric Psychology reports that poorly managed childhood asthma symptoms can lead to a higher chance of anxiety and depression later in life. That’s all the more reason to handle this childhood illness intelligently, and when BERGEN sought out Tamar Weinberger, M.D., a pediatric allergy and immunology expert at Hackensack Meridian Health, she suggested five ways to do just that:
Find a doctor. The American Institute of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology flags the following symptoms as reasons to seek out a medical specialist for a possible asthma diagnosis:
—a constant cough that is made worse by viral infections, continues while the child is asleep or is triggered by exercise or cold air;
—wheezing or whistling sounds when the child exhales; —chest tightness;
—unusual fatigue during play; or —problems sleeping due to a cough.
Early intervention can mean the difference between a bad attack and a controlled one, so don’t hesitate to seek out medical attention if you’re worried. Dr. Weinberger stresses: “Being in touch with a child’s doctors when it’s needed is very important.”
Teach the child. Dr. Weinberger often uses visual aids to explain asthma to her young patients. “I usually show them pictures—that is really
helpful for kids,” she says. “I explain that they need to breathe in medicine to help air move in and out more easily so they can run around and play.” She finds that this not only helps kids understand their condition, but also makes the process less scary for them. “Children are really resilient,” she adds. “They are not usually scared unless they’re having severe exacerbations.”
If a child is expressing more fear and anxiety over his or her symptoms, Dr. Weinberger encourages even more explanation. “I always encourage the kids to ask me questions,” she says. “Kids are intuitive and smart, and they pick up on things when their parents are nervous.” For a very anxious child, she recommends seeking out other children with asthma or learning about athletes with asthma. The more children learn, she figures, the less they will worry.
Let practice make perfect. When it comes to taking inhalers and other asthma medication, whether as a preventative measure or in an emergency, practice and preparation are key. “I have families bring their medications to every visit so we can practice and observe how they’re being taken,” says Dr. Weinberger. She also says that YouTube videos that review how medication is used are very useful. She explains: “Frequent follow-up is important, to review and re-review how and when to use medications.” It’s normal, the doctor adds, for a child to need assistance in taking medication.
Keep an open mind. When talking to parents, Dr. Weinberger says, “reassurance is key.” A common source of anxiety for the parents of her patients comes from labeling their child as an “asthmatic,” which feels both limiting and frightening. “I explain that the label is only there to help doctors give them the best medications,” she says. Also, just as they help kids, pictures help adults understand the condition too. The images let them visualize what is going on in their child’s body, which the doctor calls “very helpful.” She also says, “The most important thing to tell them is that the majority of patients who have asthma live healthy, normal lives. They play sports and run. Being aware of their symptoms and how to use
medications is the key to success.”
Take a deep breath. Dr. Weinberger stresses that the vast majority of patients with asthma—children or adults—live completely normal lives. The children she treats do not stop acting like children once they are diagnosed, and many of them see no change in their quality of life. “On a normal, day-to-day basis, kids are living their normal lives and feeling totally fine—the parents are the ones reminding them to take their preventative medications when needed,” she says. With those reminders, the correct medications and effective practice, asthma doesn’t need to slow any child down.
As pediatric allergy and immunology specialist Tamar Weinberger explains, “Every patient diagnosed with asthma gets an Asthma Action Plan, which is color-coded and reviews their medications.” This is a standard provided by the American Institute of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology; it uses the familiar system of a stoplight—green, yellow and red. The plan tells patients what to expect—and what to do—in each of three categories of symptom activity:
• Green: the “Go Zone”: You’re showing no asthma symptoms. Your breathing is good, you are not coughing or wheezing and sleeping through the night isn’t a problem. In the Go Zone, a patient can work and play as usual. When here, you may take a preventative medication to keep you feeling good.
• Yellow: the “Caution Zone”: Here you are experiencing some symptoms. You may have been exposed to a known asthma trigger, and you’re apt to be coughing. Symptoms may include a mild wheeze, a tight chest or something similar to the first signs of a cold. At this stage, you may be reaching for quick-relief medication such as an inhaler.
• Red: the “Danger Zone”: At this stage, asthma symptoms are getting worse fast. Medication is not working to ease symptoms, and breathing continues to be difficult. You may also be struggling to talk. At this stage, seek help from a doctor right away. If your regular doctor can’t be reached, go directly to an emergency room.
“She clearly didn’t see me,” says Diane Palmer of the driver of an SUV who nearly hit her in a crosswalk on West Passaic Avenue in Maywood last year. Palmer had just stepped into the crosswalk when, she says, “the car came barreling toward me.” She jumped back to avoid it—a move that may well have saved her from serious injury—but in doing so, she tore her right hip flexor, one of a group of muscles that helps lift the knee. A year later the pain is mostly gone, but what persists is Palmer’s anger that the injury had to happen at all. “If she’d just been paying attention…,” she says of the driver, leaving the sentence to hang, half-finished.
That fractured sentence could be an emblem for our times. Over the past several decades, in Bergen County and across the country, motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians, many of them deadly, have seen a dramatic increase: In 2023, for example, pedestrian deaths due to motor vehicle accidents exceeded 7,500 nationwide, the highest annual number in 40 years. A 2024 study by the lawsuit funding company High Rise Legal Funding found that New Jersey’s roads are the most dangerous for pedestrians in the country: In the U.S., an average of 17.3 percent of those killed annually in motor vehicle accidents are pedestrians; in New Jersey the percentage is 30.3. And a recent study by the law firm Laborde Earles, looking at the years from 2017 to 2021, found that Bergen ranked 10th on the list of U.S. counties with the highest rates of pedestrian

deaths—that is, pedestrian motor vehicle fatalities as a percentage of all motor vehicle fatalities: Of the county’s 180 motor vehicle deaths during the period, 79 of them, or nearly 45 percent, involved pedestrians and cyclists.
Julian Ortiz was one of the luckier cyclists in Bergen. In November 2021, he was riding with a group from the Bicycle Touring Club of North Jersey (BTCNJ). At the back of the group as they approached a traffic circle in Franklin Lakes, he watched as the rest of the group passed through the circle. “I’m keeping my eyes open left to right,” he remembers, “but I see there’s a car approaching on the right-hand side, which means it has to stop at a stop sign.” The car paused, and the driver looked to the right at the other cyclists but didn’t look to the left, at Ortiz. “The car just keeps coming,” he says, “and I’m like, ‘Oh, my God.’ And I get T-boned.” Ortiz, who was wearing a helmet, doesn’t remember if he hit his head, but except for some bruises and lacerations, he was generally OK. His new bike, however, was totaled. Like Palmer, he was angry, he says, “that such a stupid thing could happen, so easily avoidable.”
In spite of harrowing stories like Palmer’s and Ortiz’s and the even more harrowing reports of fatalities and near-fatalities, there’s reason for hope: Over the past three years, pedestrian deaths in Bergen have started to dip, falling from 20 in 2020 to 13 in 2023. “Numbers have improved a bit,” says David Behrend,
BY LESLIE GARISTO PFAFFdirector of the North Jersey Transportation Authority (NJTA), the federally authorized planning organization for Bergen and other North Jersey counties, “but keeping people safe and trying to drive fatalities and serious injuries down is still the top priority in the transportation world.”
There’s no single factor behind the recent increase, but experts tend to agree that driver distraction is a significant cause. “People are so eager to be up to date on what’s happening on social media that they’ll check their phones while they’re driving,” says Rosemarie Arnold, a personal injury lawyer in Fort Lee. She’s seen many accidents that were caused by drivers who decided to check their phones at a red light and then continued scrolling after the light changed. And our cars themselves have become more distracting, says personal injury lawyer Michael Epstein of The Epstein Law Firm in Rochelle Park. “You have people distracted with the technology in today’s cars, which have a lot more happening on the dashboard than they did even 10 years ago,” he says.
Patrick DiRoma is a partner in the safety advocacy group Bergen Complete Streets, which seeks to use a multi-pronged approach to creating safer roadways for all users. It’s affiliated with the national Complete Streets, which has been active in places such as Orlando, Florida, and Marin County, California. He
says drivers aren’t simply distracted. “Since the pandemic hit,” he says, “there’s been a general lack of patience among drivers.
I don’t know how much raw data there is to back that up, but it does seem to be anecdotally supported.”
A significant factor in the increase in pedestrian fatalities specifically is the ever-increasing size and weight of vehicles, as more drivers choose SUVs and pickups over standard passenger cars. Those large, heavy vehicles, says Behrend, “are obviously going to do more harm at the same speed than a smaller vehicle.”
Like the cause of the recent increase in pedestrian crashes, the potential solution is multifaceted. It includes approaches that have already been put in place, in some areas of Bergen and elsewhere, aimed at lowering—even eliminating—pedestrian and cyclist deaths. One such plan is Vision Zero, a statewide plan whose aim is zero pedestrian deaths by 2040 and which has already been adopted by several New Jersey municipalities, including Hoboken, where pedestrian fatalities have dropped to zero for the past seven years. The plan consists of what the Federal Highway Administration calls “proven safety countermeasures,” which Corey Hannigan, active transportation program manager for the nonprofit advocacy and policy organization Tri-State Transportation Campaign (TSTC), describes as “all kinds of little interesting changes.”
One of them is intersection daylighting, whose purpose is to make it easier for drivers and pedestrians to see each other at intersections. It’s a simple strategy that makes it not just illegal but actually impossible for cars to park at the corner of an intersection, usually through the placement of flexible posts at intersections adjacent to crosswalks. The same result could be achieved, says Hannigan, by using the same area for other purposes, like bicycle parking.
Other ways to protect pedestrians include widening the crosswalks to keep cars and pedestrians farther apart and raising the entire crosswalk to the level of the sidewalk. “Basically,” says Hannigan, “that turns the crosswalk into a speed bump, and it’s a reminder to drivers that, ‘Hey, you’re entering a pedestrian space, and you need to be careful and aware.’” Creating pedestrian islands—spaces, often raised, halfway across a crosswalk, for pedestrians to shelter if they can’t make it all the way across—can make longer crosswalks safer. In Oradell, for instance, an island was created on Kinderkamack Road by painting the roadway.
Manipulating stoplights is another way to make crosswalks safer. Bergen County Commissioner Steven Tanelli offers the example of intersections in Fort Lee, at which red lights stop motor vehicle traffic in all directions “to give pedestrians an opportunity to get a head start through the crosswalk.”
So-called traffic-calming measures can help pedestrians in crosswalks and cyclists in roadways stay safe. One of them, says Chris Nowell, a partner of DiRoma in Bergen Complete Streets, is narrowing lanes. Roads in Bergen that are now 12 or 13 feet wide could be narrowed to 10 feet with a bike or multi-use path created on the right. (It’s been proven that narrower lanes cause drivers to slow down.) That path should
be clearly designated, which, says David Goldstein, president of BTCNJ, isn’t always the case in Bergen County. It’s important to designate the space for bikers with a painted line and signage that indicates the lane’s purpose; it’s even safter, says Goldstein, to create a physical barrier between the road and the lane.
Safety-oriented laws can protect pedestrians and cyclists, but only if drivers are aware of them. There’s a law on the books in New Jersey, for instance, mandating that drivers only pass cyclists when there’s at least 4 feet of distance between them. “The biggest problem with the law,” says Goldstein, “is that I don’t think anybody knows about it outside of cyclists.” Sometimes, drivers may know about a law but need a reminder to comply with it. We may know, for example, that we should stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, but we don’t always do that. Driver education campaigns can help teach and remind drivers of existing laws, and studies show that these campaigns can make a difference in behavior on the road. They range from signage erected throughout a municipality to fliers distributed through local businesses to police traffic stops. One example of the latter is Cops in the Crosswalk, a program in which a plainclothes officer enters the crosswalk while another officer stands by to nab drivers who don’t stop. Towns can get grants from the state Division of Highway Traffic to implement the program; it’s up to individual municipalities to decide whether to fine offenders or simply give them a citation. Melissa Hayes, senior director of communications and external affairs at NJTA, notes that “warnings are very effective” at changing behavior.
Federal funding is available to help counties and municipalities design and implement pedestrian safety plans. Currently, communities in Bergen County, including Englewood and the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority in the Meadowlands, are working with the help of federal grants to implement plans they’ve already drawn up. And the county as a whole is in the process of developing a so-called Local Safety Action Plan with the help of federal funding through the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Pedestrian and cyclist advocates like Nowell and DiRoma hope these efforts will help to create a safer environment in the future, while public officials like Tanelli note that measures such as widening crosswalks are already having an effect on pedestrian crash numbers.
Whether those numbers continue to go down is dependent, in part, on the dedication of public officials to tackle a complex problem. DiRoma notes that the Bergen County Board of Commissioners has been “open to the idea of Complete Streets, but resistant to what it would take to go through the heavy lift of implementing it on a widespread scale,” which would require a high level of cooperation between the county and its 70 municipalities. Change is also dependent on residents speaking up when they see a need. “If a safety situation in your area needs to be addressed,” Tanelli says, “it’s very important that you bring it to your local municipality, which will then bring it to us so we can work tougher on it.”
“By speaking up,” he says, “you can save lives.”
While roadway improvements and changes to the law are essential to making Bergen’s streets safer, pedestrians and cyclists can personally take steps to decrease their chances of becoming the victim of a motor vehicle accident.
Pedestrians should:
• Follow the “WALK” sign. Many pedestrians cross before the “WALK” message appears if the street looks empty, but they may not be aware of cars about to turn into the road or speeding around a corner.
• Cross in the crosswalk.
“There you have the right of way, and you’re in a much safer position because drivers are more likely to see you,” says personal injury lawyer Michael Epstein.
• Be observant. “Even though you have the right of way in a crosswalk, cars may not always stop,” says Epstein. Try to make eye contact with drivers, and put your phone away.
• Be especially cautious at night. More than half of all pedestrian accidents occur between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight. Don’t assume that drivers can see you—often they can’t.
Cyclists should:
• Make themselves visible, with bright clothing and—especially important—bike lights. David Goldstein, president of the Bicycle Touring Club of North Jersey. recommends equipping your bike with an intermittently-flashing back light.
• Be road-savvy—which means, says Goldstein, “that you’re constantly aware of your surroundings.”
• Consider riding with a group. “You’re definitely safer relative to cars in a group,” Goldstein advises. For more information on that group, go to btcnj.com.

But this did not mean smaller quarters, as one might expect. Instead, they committed to their five-bedroom center-hall colonial (built in 1997) with a sophisticated redesign of their family and dining rooms.
“They didn’t need to worry about young kids ruining things,” says Laurie DiGiacomo of the eponymous Ridgewood design firm. “They just wanted to enjoy it and feel like it met the stage they’re in in life.”
So it was adieu to traditional décor—dark and dated— and welcome to a fresh modern vibe, she says. Both husband and wife have traveled the globe—he often does for work—and DiGiacomo tapped into the chic, elevated style they’d encountered at fancy and sophisticated hotels.

modernized with a floral pattern of Carrara marble. The linen built-ins with metallic elements by Timeless Closets & Cabinetry share the limelight, and “when it’s all lit up, the entire wall is a showpiece,” says DiGiacomo. At the husband’s request, the TV/work of art lies separate from the fireplace, creating a test of balance. Mission accomplished, DiGiacomo says: “Everything marries so beautifully together— without things fighting each other.”
While the coffered ceiling delivers dimension, an abstract rug by Stanton over oak “balances out some of the accent colors”—including gray and pale blue. A large room called for large furniture: a faux ostrich leather ottoman and chenille modern sofa, both by Burton James, joined by boucle barrel-back swivels by Four Hands.
“I’m a big texture designer,” says DiGiacomo. “It makes people want to interact with the environment more.” She points to the faux shagreen star table by World’s Away and the texturally soft Kravet and Schumacher drapes.
The dining room has its own share of gems, such as the Crystorama chandelier, elegance defined by a jeweled golden effect. “It’s dramatic,” says DiGiacomo—and
it was high on the husband’s redesign list, as he hated its ornate Tuscany predecessor. The new bedazzled chandelier highlights the ceiling’s surprising sparkle. Born of recycled windshield, the York ceiling, she says, really was the “icing on the cake” and finds its accompaniment in Romo’s glass-pattern, textured wall linen.
The star of the room—especially for hosting holidays—is the oversized walnut table which joins porcelain blue chairs, all by Vanguard. Another focal point is Interlude Home’s grass cloth sideboard with studded hardware and navy lacquer interior.
Playing supporting roles in this design saga are the blue abstract rug by Surya and metallic foil painting, which, like the Regina Andrew gold-toned mirrors, enhances by reflecting light. Tone-on-tone draperies with blue Shumacher trim are an intentional nod to the family room’s palette.
From family home to empty nest, from traditional to modern elegance, these Glen Rock homeowners demonstrated that they could embrace change in life and style. “They just thought the overall design was really chic and elevated,” says DiGiacomo, “and that’s what they wanted at this stage in their lives.”
“We wanted the rooms to speak to each other, which we did through color,” DiGiacomo says. Here a bedazzled chandelier elevates the dining area, where a supersized walnut table suits holiday gatherings just fine.
A Woodcliff Lake family can now bask in their outdoor sanctuary any day of the year.

For a family that spends most of their time in Spain, their stateside residence had to feel like the ultimate staycation paradise. That was the first consideration for the team at Ringwood-based CLC Landscape Design, which was asked to turn a weed-filled, approximately 1-acre Woodcliff Lake backyard into a great space for living and leisure.
“They knew what they wanted in a backyard, and we came up with a gorgeous design that they immediately loved,” CLC owner Rich Cording Sr. says of the six-month-long project that bridged 2022 and 2023.
An outdoor kitchen was a priority, as the homeowner couple—especially the wife—loves to cook for family and friends. Traditional Spanish dishes like paella are her specialty, so a large prep space as well as counter-side seating for guests was necessary. The list of must-haves also included a large patio with a dining area, a hot tub and a firepit, all deemed essentials for entertaining at home. Bright Techo-Bloc pavers replaced an aged brick patio

and connected the kitchen with both the dining and spa areas. The latter destination point represented something new for CLC.
“It was the first time we did a raised Ipe deck with a firepit over pavers,” Cording tells BERGEN. “It’s always exciting to do something new for a client, and they were thrilled with it. Everything starts with a good design, and we incorporated everything that they wanted in our first one.”
Though the initial design exceeded the homeowners’ expectation, CLC didn’t rest on its laurels. The team, led by Alex Kuzmik and Kevin Taylor, drafted a second design that featured a swimming pool, a pavilion and a golf putting green.
“The homeowners’ long-term vision was to have a pool,” Cording says, “but we were able to get creative immediately because the yard was big enough to have fun.”
Creativity started with the pool design. Instead of a run-of-the-mill rectangle shape, The Pool Boss in Wayne installed a free-form pool with soft curves that were replicated in the shapes of both the Techo-Bloc patio and the golf green. S Scott
Construction and Design built a poolside pavilion between the pool and the golf zone, complete with an outdoor fireplace, a television and ample seating.
“The idea was to bring the home outside,” Cording says. “Having a covered space allows everyone to enjoy the pavilion and watch TV even if it starts drizzling.”
Anytime enjoyment was also the idea behind wiring various spots in the yard for lighting. In addition to the fireplace and pit, light sources were installed in the pool, around the pavilion, alongside the main patio bar and at each step of the spa deck. “Lights are a great touch for night and even for winter,” Cording says. “Imagine looking out on a December night when there’s snow on the ground.”
The full design netted CLC two prestigious awards from the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association, but the homeowners’ satisfaction is the bigger prize.
“They were so proud of their new yard, and nothing makes us happier,” Cording says.

There’s a time and a place to knock down walls, but starting from scratch isn’t necessarily the right course of action when dealing with a mid-century home. That was designer Cynthia Peralta-Brito’s first line of thinking when she redid a young Ramsey couple’s house, a project that started in mid-2022 and was completed last summer.
“It’s a mid-century modern home, and I wanted to respect the architecture while giving it a refresh,” says Peralta-Brito, principal of Old Tappan-based CPB Interiors + Design. She also wanted the update to reflect the growing family’s personality and their love for travel. “Throughout the process we were mindful of maintaining the integrity of the home’s original character while incorporating new design details.”
The first major change was the upgrade to the foyer. The old clay tile floor, which started at the front stoop and continued inside, was replaced with a new, slate-like porcelain

The home’s color story and new design details also begin in the foyer. Brito introduced a variation on the couple’s favorite color, blue, in this area while installing modern interior doors by Door Design Lab in Paramus and contemporary moldings from Garden State Lumber in Oakland.
Just beyond the foyer, a powder room received a similar revamping. The designer continued the new porcelain tile floor into this space and created more visual interest with an eye-catching blue floral wallpaper. “It was inspired by their travels to Paris, their love of botanicals and their favorite color,” she says. “The homeowners had no fear—they were gung ho with my recommendation of splashing even more color onto the ceiling. We created an unexpected bathroom
for guests to experience and talk about even days later.”
There’s more to talk about in the kitchen, where Peralta-Brito combined existing elements with modern touches. While cabinets and walls simply received a fresh, bright coat of paint, new hardware was added and updated surfaces were installed for the porcelain tile floor and quartz counters. A colorful alternative to white subway tile, the dusty, blue-toned glass backsplash tile “isn’t overpowering” and is stunning visually when viewed from different angles.
“A full gut renovation isn’t the only answer to a new dream kitchen,” she says. “A light, bright, contemporary new space that can hold up to the use of a bustling family was created by just making a few simple changes.”

Many homes contain a bar, but a full, authentic Irish pub? That calls for a toast!

For a Wayne family of Irish descent, a distinctive item now claims a place of honor in their home pub. (Yes, they have a home pub.) “There’s a piece of slate behind the bar that’s carved into the map of Ireland,” says Brian Sullivan, one of the homeowners. “It’s actually a roof tile from the house that my father grew up in in Ireland.” A fitting showcase for this bit of family history had to be “the most social area of the house,” he says, and the pub fits that to a T.
With billiards, classic games and enough instruments for a band, the pub dedicates 900 feet of a new addition to good times for Sullivan, his wife Mary Jo and seven children, as well as guests no doubt surprised to find such authenticity above the garage. “It definitely looks like a

good Irish pub,” Sullivan affirms.
As a toast to pub character, designer Anthony Passanante of Waldwick’s Anthony Albert Studios maximized the warmth of oak, using it as a common thread in the bar’s custom cabinetry and vaulted ceilings as well as its floors. For further warmth, wood paneling also complements the soft blue of the walls, Passanante says.
Drawing from inspiration the homeowners found in restaurants, Anthony Albert Studios built wine lockers, which flank on either side the Celtic-flavored mirror where the slate keepsake takes center stage. The lockers are accented with aged brass mesh; “each has lights for a nice effect at night,” the designer says. Describing it as a “classic metal for a classic theme,” Passanante extended aged brass to the mirror and cabinet hardware as well.
Contrasting white and black, honed quartzite from Dente Trading runs like a waterfall over the counter’s edge and wows the bar top too. No detail is missing in the bar’s design, which features an old-school Chicago bar rail and a quartersawn oak top, along with a Sub-Zero beverage center and a wine unit that blend in for aesthetics. Brown leather bar stools are a rustic touch and complement a nearby sofa.
Stressing the benefits of collaboration, Passanante says that working with builder Spencer Cosgriff of Sterling Ridge Contracting gave him the advantage of planning from the get-go for optimal results. Completed in the summer of 2022, the pub drew the stamp of approval from Irish relatives for style and the children for the fun factor.
“Aside from the kitchen,” says Sullivan, “it’s probably the most used room in the house.”
It’s impossible to overstate what painting does for a room’s design. It is the foundation of the vibe and visual story of a space. The color of the walls can make a room warm and cozy—or surprising—or forbidding. While there are different ways to “get it right,” these are decisions you surely don’t want to get wrong. BERGEN sought out five designers in our county; their advice can help you choose paints wisely and coordinate them with the other elements of the design you’re striving for.
Choosing paints is one of the key requirements for your design project. Here’s help from five local experts.
Though there are pros and cons to every kind of paint you can choose, oil-based paints have fallen out of favor recently, says Denise Pough. “Oil-based paint is durable and aesthetically pleasing, but it’s expensive, difficult to work with and not good for indoor air quality,” she explains. “Latex is easy to work with, but is the least durable and brittles over time. Acrylic is durable, eco-conscious and gives a high-end look.” Tara Rotelli loves hybrid paints such as Latex Acrylic Base by Sherwin-Williams. But Simone Rebhun notes that paint-plaster hybrids such as Venetian Plaster and Roman Clay may be a good choice in certain situations. For example, she says, “We’ve used them on ceilings for added depth and a reflective lighting effect.”
Gone are the days when the plain white ceiling was an automatic choice; all our experts encourage paying creative attention to this “fifth wall.” As Granert notes, “Over the last 10 years, ceilings have become so much more important in design.” An attractive ceiling, she says, can do much to enhance a space that doesn’t have room for much more visual interest. “Painting the ceiling of a room in a darker color,” says Gina Avino, “conveys the feeling of a higher ceiling, especially if the walls are in a lighter tone.” Rotelli goes a step farther: “If you want something even more enchanting, apply decorative molding or shiplap to the ceiling, install some crown, and then paint.”
Our experts agree that texture is the first thing to consider when choosing a paint finish. Linda Granert warns: “The higher the gloss, the more visible the imperfections.” Because of this, ceilings are usually painted in a flat finish. But glossier paint finishes are easier to clean, thus they’re often considered for hightraffic areas. “When looking for practicality and cleanability, you will want a sheen,” says Rotelli. Pough offers a summary: “Matte and satin are most often specified for walls; semi-gloss and satin finish for trim. Eggshell and satin can be used for high-traffic areas and rooms with a high level of moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens and mudrooms.”
This is a part of a room where everyone encourages you, the homeowner, to let your style and personality shine through. “There is no one-size-fits-all approach,” says Rotelli. “Every client, or homeowner, has their own taste.” But she advises keeping in mind color story and accent pieces. “Having less contrast on your wall and molding treatments will allow a different element in the room to be the star of the show,” she says. Avino suggests being aware of the undertones of white trim, as it can change the feeling of a room. “A warm white is a great complement to warm colors such as yellows and oranges, while a cool white is great for grays and blues,” she explains. Rebhun brings up a different option; she says coordinating wall and trim color can also be very effective: “It’s very inviting to be enveloped in all the same color.”
Accent walls exist to create visual interest and to break up a flow of a room. Avino says, “High ceilings, nooks and open floor plans all work nicely with a painted accent wall.” She cautions, though, that such walls can make a smaller room feel even more closed in; thus they should be used with caution in that environment. Pough agrees; she suggests playing with contrasts: “In order to make the accent wall work best, be sure the adjoining walls are a contrasting color and a light to medium shade, so the wall attracts the eye.” An accent wall can be a boon for managing a budget, says Granert. “If I design a room with a built-in, but the client can’t do that for cost reasons, we can do an accent wall instead to have it offset from the rest of the space,” she explains. “The end result is still achieved.”
Maybe it’s lying dormant just now, that mad hunger for art. But a quick trip to one of Talk about mad! More than a century ago, Henri Matisse’s 1907 painting Blue Nude made people so angry they burned it in effigy. Not only are nudes not supposed to be blue, they figured, but this naked lady was rough, muscular, immodest—everything their idealized notion of the demure, willowy female was not. Spring is unpredictable outdoors, but the weather inside a climate-controlled museum always purrs like a kitten. And five cities within driving distance of Bergen offer world-class art museums that make great short-trip destinations. They are filled with works that span media, time periods and styles. With attractions ranging from the most contemporary of modern art to portraits seeped in history to landscapes lovely enough to cause a quick intake of breath, any one of these destinations will entrance you for hours. Whether you’re looking for a quick weekend break to check out one or two, or a week-long trip to immerse yourself in art, you’ll never run out of things to see.
Much more than just “Blue Nude,” the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) offers the world’s largest collection of the work of impressionist Matisse. It’s always free for general admission (though special exhibits may charge) and features more than 97,000 art pieces, including sculpture installations, watercolors and fiber art. (Not bad for a museum that was started in 1914 with a single painting!) Most events on BMA’s always-updating calendar are also free. If you crave something a little less traditional, the American Visionary Art Museum has you covered. This destination is famous for displaying the work of self-taught artists, including farmers, mathematicians and prison inmates. It’s one of the country’s go-to destinations for “outsider art,” and is guaranteed to capture your imagination and challenge your expectations.
And, since you can’t spell Baltimore without “more,” there’s more: There is, for example, The Walters Art Museum, which displays collections spanning millennia. Tucked into the always-alive Mount Vernon Cultural District, it shows off paintings from 19th century masters, Asian textile art, European medieval armor and additional treasures. And the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, which celebrates African American history and culture in Maryland. And the Jewish Museum of Maryland, which focuses on the history and artistic reflections of Jewish experiences around the world. And dozens of additional art destinations.
Off the beaten path: If you’re looking for a small gallery instead of a sprawling museum, check out the Crystal Moll Gallery, which displays the work of Moll and other local artists with a focus on “plein air” urban landscape paintings. This kind of small space often gives you chances to run into and chat with the artists themselves, for a one-of-akind experience.

Art and history are deeply entwined in our nation’s capital. The National Museum of Art is a must-see, considered by many one of the best destinations in the country to explore art history. Some of the greatest masterworks of Western creativity are on display here. Its archives are extensive, comprising more than 150,000 pieces, and its exhibits are constantly rotating, so repeat visits are a treat. Also offering free admission and daily guided tours, this should top the list of any art-seeker’s vacation plans. D.C.’s Smithsonian museums are trademark attractions of the city, and display art just as extensively as they display history. The Smithsonian American Art Museum challenges you to put yourself “within the American artistic landscape” and describes itself as “the global leader and trusted source on American art and craft.” Its modern and contemporary art collection is extensive, along with pieces that make history vivid, like Isaac Julien’s image installation exploring the life of Frederick Douglass (on display until the end of 2026). The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery almost needs no introduction, as its collection of the faces that form the American identity is unrivaled. Anderson House, in a 1905 Beaux-Arts mansion, preserves the memory of the American Revolution, while The Kreeger Museum on Foxhall Road revels in 19th and 20th century art. And that just scratches the surface; the capital has more than 80 museums.
Off the beaten path: The Phillips Collection is our nation’s first modern-art museum, created in 1921. Small and intimate, it’s situated in founder Duncan Phillips’ old home, and the pieces are often arranged to allow for connections and conversations between different eras of art.
With work from such artists as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Pablo Picasso, this is a hidden gem worth uncovering.

You knew this one was coming, but don’t groan! We have some of the best art displays in the world right in Bergen’s backyard. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the Americas and the fourth largest in the world. Its collection spans more than 5,000 years, and even if you’ve visited before there’s always something new to catch your eye, as exhibits rotate frequently. On display now is “Lineages,” a collection of Korean art, and “Grounded in Clay,” which displays Pueblo pottery. The Met also has daily events and tours, many of them family friendly. Another NYC giant is the Museum of Modern Art, known familiarly as MOMA. It’s one of the world’s best destinations for modern art, one where each piece is meant to challenge you, impress you and make you think. If you’ve ever thought it would be amazing to see Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” in person, you can do that at MOMA.
Of course, NYC offers more than the giants. On Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District, there’s the Whitney Museum of American Art, which concentrates on work from the 20th and 21st centuries. (If you’re still getting used to the Whitney’s decade-ago move downtown from its Upper East Side address, remember that the museum’s first location, when it opened in 1931, was on West 8th Street in Greenwich Village.) And the New Museum of Contemporary Art, an architectural wonder on the outside in addition to its collections inside, explores under-recognized artists. It often does full catalogues of artists’ work before they reach true mainstream recognition. The Big Apple features more than 90 other museums and galleries. Off the beaten path: If you’re burned out from the sheer NYC scale of the bigger museums, you can stop by the American Folk Art Museum, smaller in size and in scope. This collection spotlights selftaught artists and “folk” art around the country— you’ll see things like quilting and fiber crafts displayed here.

A two-hour drive will take you to New Haven, where art collections are extensive and Yale University is almost a museum itself, with nearly 300 years of history and architecture. Wander the open parts of the campus for glorious clock towers and arches. The Yale University Art Gallery holds the distinction of being the oldest gallery in America; it offers free admission every day. There’s lots to see here, from John Trumbull’s “The Declaration of Independence” (you know this one, even if you don’t know you do) to Greek urns from 500 B.C.E. Ancient and modern works, fine art and crafts, this is a destination that has it all and displays it extensively. While you’re exploring the campus, you may also browse the Yale Center for British Art, which has the biggest collection of its namesake work outside the United Kingdom. That collection includes landscapes by Romantic greats J. M. W. Turner and Richard Parkes Bonington.
The New Haven Museum takes a more historical slant, but is no less worthwhile. Inside you’ll find displays of local crafts and handmade furnishings, which tell visual histories of the city and of design. It features an exhibition of signs and sign art from throughout New Haven’s history and displays an extensive photography collection, going all the way back to the invention of the medium. Off the beaten path: If you’re looking for something a little looser (and more suitable for little ones), the Connecticut Children’s Museum is a great option. Every one of its exhibits is community inspired and friendly for all ages and levels of accessibility. Nearly everything is interactive, including its recreation of the Great Green Room from the classic storybook Goodnight, Moon This one will get your child excited about learning—but good luck getting her or him to leave!

The City of Brotherly Love has an incredible arts community, and it’s reflected in its collection of museums. It’s also only a two-and-a-half-hour drive away. When you arrive, it’s best to not overthink where to start—go to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and get ready to spend hours wandering the halls (and, yes, get a picture on the Rocky stairs). Its collections and galleries span hundreds of years and hundreds of countries. Right now, it’s spotlighting American photography in the 1970s, while the permanent collections include Impressionist and Renaissance pieces by artists such as Edgar Degas and Sandro Botticelli. If the sheer size of that seems difficult to grapple with, turn your attention to the Institute of Contemporary Art. Affiliated with University of Pennsylvania, it’s where to go to see art innovation. Nearly all the artists on display here are still living, and exhibits are constantly updating.
For a smaller, focused gallery experience, visit the Rodin Museum. Dedicated to sculptor Auguste Rodin, who is considered the founder of modern sculpture and known for his masterpiece “The Thinker,” it is the largest collection of his work outside Paris. This museum showcases some of the most lifelike sculptures ever created, and it often stages exhibits to highlight individual details of Rodin’s work. And that’s just the start; Philly has dozens of other art centers to catch your eye.
Off the beaten path: The Ryerss Museum is operated by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, but located about a half hour away from it. Displayed in the Ryerss Mansion (which still contains much of the original 19th century furnishings), this is an eclectic museum that grew from Joseph Waln Ryerss’s personal collection. Art spills from the original first floor of the house and into two galleries in the rear, much of it from China, Tibet, Japan and India. Your parents taught you to eat your greens. Make them proud by dining on these easy-to-make and protein-packed dishes.
Yields 4 servings
n 7 oz. broccoli
n 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts
n 1/2 cup plus 2 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil
n salt to taste
n freshly ground black pepper to taste
n 10 anchovy fillets, rinsed
n about 1 cup white wine vinegar
n 5 cups loosely packed basil leaves
n 1¹/³ cups pine nuts
n 1 clove garlic
n 1²/³ cups grated Parmigiano Reggiano
n 3 egg yolks
n 1 head Romaine lettuce
n focaccia for serving
Pound the chicken breasts to an even thickness with a meat mallet. In a shallow dish,combine 3 tablespoons of the olive oil with salt and black pepper. Place the chicken breasts in the dish, turn to coat, cover and marinate in the refrigerator for 1 hour. While the chicken is marinating, soak the anchovy fillets in vinegar to cover.
In a blender puree the basil, pine nuts, garlic, 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon olive oil and a pinch of salt until smooth. Then add ²/³ cup grated Parmigiano and blend until thickened. Set aside.
Drain the anchovies and mince them. In a bowl whisk together the minced anchovies, egg yolks and remaining 1 cup grated Parmigiano until thick and well combined.
Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat, then remove the chicken from the marinade and cook until opaque in the center and lightly browned on the surface, about 5 minutes per side. Let the chicken cool for 5 minutes, then cut into strips.
Shred the Romaine lettuce. In a bowl, toss the shredded lettuce, the anchovy mixture and the chicken until combined. Arrange the salad on individual plates and include a slice or two of focaccia with each serving. Drizzle the basil sauce around the rim of each plate.

DIRECTIONS
In a small bowl, whisk the mayonnaise with the Dijon mustard and the wine until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the shrimp and cook until opaque, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon or skimmer and transfer to a colander to drain. Add the beans to the shrimp cooking water and cook until heated through, about 2 minutes. Drain the beans. Peel and pit the avocados and slice them.
Place the olive oil and garlic in a skillet over medium heat, and when the oil begins to sizzle, add the diced tomatoes. Once the tomatoes soften, remove from the heat and crush with a fork or the back of a spoon. In a bowl, combine the shrimp and beans with the cooked tomatoes.
Mound the arugula in the middle of a platter. Arrange the avocado slices, the endive leaves and the grape tomato halves on the platter. Put the shrimp and beans on top of the arugula. Drizzle the prepared dressing over the salad.
“Substitute the mayonnaise in this recipe for half a cup of plain Greek yogurt to get the same creamy flavor with added protein. If you really want to use mayonnaise, use one that has olive oil as the base as opposed to eggs. Shrimp is already high in cholesterol, so balance it out with a lighter creamy dressing to make the whole recipe better for the heart and waist.”

One of my greatest accomplishments is breaking away from perceived career expectations, paving my own unique way to success, and defining that success in my own way. Raised among a family of restaurateurs and finding myself folding pizza boxes at a young age, I often believed I was destined to follow in my parents’ footsteps even though I knew that path was not for me. Having no family in medicine and looking to get my foot in the door, I volunteered at local hospitals and served as an EMT before applying to medical school.
What are your future goals?
With the help of my colleagues and patients, I hope that our center becomes the healthcare standard for the LGBTQ+ community in New Jersey as we continue the work toward eliminating healthcare disparities, destigmatizing HIV, and improving access to care.

Whether you’re trying a new restaurant or heading out to an old faithful, there’s a good chance you’ll peruse the online menu and pre-determine an order. Many see that as a time saver, but I like a sneak peek at the offerings because it lets me create a course of action.
I thought I had a good plan in mind before visiting Food Lab, which opened earlier this year at a Ridgefield Park storefront. Its website proudly displays photos of burgers, wings and fries—and its logo shows familiar silhouettes of greens, mushrooms and what I thought was pizza as well as a fork and knife. While I expected traditional pub grub like cheeseburgers and chicken sandwiches, little did I know there would be more than that.
The restaurant operates under the banner of “international food” and with a motto stating that “culinary exploration knows no bounds.”
I should’ve guessed that a place with “lab” in its name would have a somewhat experimental menu—and it did. Alongside tasty American bistro fare were Asian-inspired comforts, a pleasant surprise for me and my friend.
On this trip, we toyed with the idea of wings as a starter. (Boneless wings are also an option.) In addition to the spicy Buffalo-style one would expect at a tavern, Food Lab offers other flavors such as sweet-and-spicy and soy garlic. Though tempted, we went a different route and split the shrimp-and-vegetable-tempura side as an appetizer. The dish isn’t a complete 180 from wings, as they’re both fried and they’re both loaded with flavor. The tempura arrived piping hot, and each piece was crisped to perfection—unlike the soggy bites sometimes found at other eateries. (Pro tip: Let the tempura cool before taking big chomps; otherwise your taste buds will be hurting.)
We stuck with the Asian theme for our second app, an order of fried pork dumplings. Similar to the tempura, each fried flour pouch was steamy hot upon arrival, and our super-friendly server warned us about the heat. Also like the tempura, the
dumplings were crispy and well-done, just as we wanted them, and the meat inside was a flavor delight. Our only hangup was that a steamed version of the dish wasn’t an option.
I flipped the switch for my main course, going from Asian food to new American cuisine—well, sort of American. In the mood for a burger, I had a Korean-inspired beef bulgogi burger: a towering, hand-held meal comprising a thick, marinated patty topped with cheese, caramelized onion, lettuce, tomato and special bulgogi sauce. The meat was super-tasty and juicy, the same way you’d get it at a gourmet burger joint. I had zero regrets and no complaints with my order, and it quickly made me forget that I’d been torn among this burger, the kimchi burger and the ribeye bulgogi over rice.
My friend, meanwhile, stuck with the full Asian flavor, opting for tonkotsu ramen over meatier selections such as teriyaki and katsu. The dazzling aroma of the broth seemed to hover over our table for the entire afternoon, and the steaming bowl was filled with magically arranged ingredients, from tender pork and hardboiled egg to mushrooms and bok choy. As she slurped the noodles, I asked how the dish compared with others she’d tried. “It’s not your ordinary ramen-shop ramen,” she reported. My taste test of the broth confirmed her statement; this would be a must-order for me next time. (Then again, who knows what I can expect during my next visit?)
While we stuck to mostly Asian-inspired cuisine during this outing, Food Lab also offers a mouthwatering array of bistro-style cheeseburgers, chicken burgers, fries and onion rings (which I’ve heard are to die for). It lacked a full assortment of appetizers or of desserts at presstime; however, we’re hoping the culinary experiments and exploration continue here. We’ll be back for certain to find out and try more.
