Call it an editor’s guilty pleasure. Reviewing designs for BERGEN’s Home and Garden Issue each year gives me a sneak peek into the destinies of the homes we feature. These projects mark the melding of a designer’s talents with a family’s dreams. And home design is ultimately about more than floor plans, materials, color palettes and imaginatively sourced pieces; it’s about the good times that will be enjoyed in these spaces. It’s a bold bet on future happiness, and I get to experience it vicariously—and share it with you, our readers.
A mere glance into the crystal ball told a Wyckoff couple (page 52) what future experience they wanted from their home’s primary bath: a chance to decompress, away from the kids, much as they loved them. A steam shower helped. So did a freestanding soaking tub with a heated backrest right under a bay window. And aesthetics that matched the spa-like vibe. Such serenity was also the goal for a Tenafly pair who drew their designer out of her comfort zone. (Often it’s the other way around.) She rose to the challenge with adroit choices in pattern and texture and liberal use of white oak that helped set the scene for their good times—see “Om, Sweet Om” on page 44.
If you can’t see future fun in store when you reach page 56, you’re all wet. There we showcase an Englewood swimming pool that needed an update—and got a whole new life. A fire pit, a hot tub, a TV and an outdoor kitchen also star in what became a reimagined backyard.
Wallpaper’s been reimagined too—the floral print on your grandmother’s walls no longer tells its whole story. On page 38, five Bergen-based design experts explain the savvy use of this versatile décor feature in 2023. (Sometimes it’s not on a wall at all!)
What else rounds out this issue? A Special Report on how our county’s trees are faring (page 60). Health articles on springtime allergies (page 34) and stress (page 36). Earth Day celebrations (page 17) and sushi par excellence (page 108). And on page 24, meet a neighbor who’s a semifamous actor. You may pass him right by on the street, but if he speaks, you’ll say, “I know that voice!”
We hope these pages entertain—and offer an idea or two for your own future.

Don’t just rely on April showers to bring springtime flowers—your garden needs more prep work to get it ready for the season. Below are five steps that we recently featured in our Bergen Buzz weekly e-newsletter to ensure your garden grows just how you like it: Clean your garden. With a pair of gardening gloves and some hedge clippers, walk through your garden and yard and clear any debris, weeds or dead or wet leaves. Wash all your planters so they don’t get bugs, and scour your lawn for mold and fungus, which pose risks to a healthy lawn, according to Borst Landscaping & Design in Allendale. Prepare the soil. Winter hardens the soil, so you’ll need to loosen it up before you start planting. Dig about 8 inches deep to loosen the topsoil and allow for air and water to reach the roots, according to Ridgewood’s Goffle Brook Farm & Garden Center. Build a protective layer. Mulch will create a protective barrier on top of the soil which helps conserve water, reduce the growth of weeds and protect plants, says Borst Landscaping & Design. Mulch also helps plants thrive, especially if you add nutrients. Fertilize the soil. Fertilizing sooner than later ensures the plants will be healthy as they grow back in. To do this, Chris James Landscaping in Waldwick recommends digging little holes 2 feet apart from the drip line, making sure the holes are 2 inches deep and filling them up with fertilizer. Make room. Whether you’re using pots, boxes or an open bed of dirt, seeds should be given ample space to grow and absorb water and nutrients; ideally you’ll leave about 2 to 3 feet per plant.

Dogs: Ms. Promise, 14-year-old bearded collie, and Ms. Precious Squirt, 2-year-old Havanese Owner: Fran Lang, Allendale Fran and her late husband Everett adopted Promise more than 10 years ago after the pup was deemed too light to continue as a show dog. But she turned into the perfect therapy dog, staying by Everett’s side when he fell ill and joining Fran when they visited him at rehab.
“Everyone wanted me to have her visit their rooms,” Fran says. “Promise is so gentle and loving, and she is my dear friend and has always been there with and for me.” Mom decided to give Promise a sister about a year and a half ago, when a friend sent Fran photos of two Havanese puppies. She knew immediately that she wanted to bring Precious Squirt home—and Precious later completed therapy-dog training too.
Fran admits it was a challenge caring for two dogs, especially because Precious has so much energy. “She literally flies from tabletops to laps and onto beds,” Fran says. “But the two dogs have become very close, and Promise watches over her. I have learned that when one cuddles up with me, the other is quick to be there too.”

Rodizio is Portuguese for “rotating;” the word describes a Brazilian style of restaurant serving in which various meats are brought around your table and carved onto your plate—and it doesn’t stop until you say so. Preparing your yard for spring and summer means more than getting ready to garden—this is the time to safeguard your space against mosquitoes too. These bloodsuckers typically thrive in moist environments when temperatures rise above 50 degrees, and they’re a nuisance when they start buzzing and biting. In New Jersey you may encounter three species: Asian tiger, cattail and white-footed woods. Each can deliver an itchy bite, and the Asian tiger (Zika and West Nile viruses) and cattail (West Nile) are known to transmit diseases. Below are a few tips to follow so you don’t bug out later:
• Clean up your yard and remove anything that can hold water, such as unused pots and containers.
• Cover or overturn trailers, wheelbarrows, tools and children’s toys to avoid water pooling.
• Regularly clean gutters and drains so that water runs freely.
• Change water in pet drinking bowls, bird baths and vases at least weekly.
• Put sand around the base of potted plants to absorb pooling water.
• Keep swimming pools well maintained and chlorinated or securely covered if not in use.
• Keep fishponds clean with minimal vegetation around the edges.
• Keep lawns and gardens trimmed back to reduce the areas where mosquitoes rest.
Hooray for Jaime Weaver, a reading specialist at Stony Lane Elementary School in Paramus, who was named one of the state Department of Education’s 2022 Exemplary Educators. Also the school’s literacy coach, Weaver helps general education students in kindergarten through fourth grade expand and improve their reading abilities. Public school districts throughout the state can participate in this program and nominate teachers for the recognition. For 2023, the competition is open to educators teaching grades six through 12.
To celebrate our planet is to take care of it, and there are a number of ways you can make a difference—starting at home. As you go through the spring-cleaning motions, getting rid of old things in the basement and garage may be a priority—but remember to do so properly. Don’t toss electronics, household cleaners and hazardous waste materials into your regular trash for collection. Instead, determine if your town accepts these items, either via curbside pickup or at its recycling facility. If not, you can dispose of them at these sites on these dates:
Household hazardous waste— Bergen Community College, Paramus, April 16, June 11, Oct. 15.
Bergen County Campgaw Reservation, Mahwah, May 13, July 15, Sept. 9.
Bergen County Utilities Authority, Moonachie, Nov. 18.
Electronics and tires— Bergen Community College, April 30, Aug. 12.

I was doing impressions at an early age. We’d watch Bugs Bunny and imitate all the voices. I started off doing all the school plays and continued that into college and eventually got more into comedy. I started taking improv classes and doing sketch writing. In tandem with that I had a side job as a puppeteer doing shows for corporate audiences. Eventually someone came to a show and said, “Let’s sign you to work in commercials.” For a long time, it was a lot of commercial work, but suddenly video games started to come into the picture and then animation and things really started to happen.
You’re the voice of Huck on Netflix’s adult animated actionadventure series Arcane , which won an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, beating out The Simpsons and Marvel Studios’ What If…? How does it feel to be part of an award-winning show? It’s been a remarkable experience. It’s a magnificent show, and the writing and animation are unbelievable—they fired on all cylinders, and it really paid off.
What’s it like being heard but not seen?
The thing about voice acting is, I could play a dad with 20-something kids, but then a 6-foot-5 cowboy who’s a mercenary and goes where the money is. I could be a 90-year-old Spanish guy who’s on his last legs but is going to fight in the revolution. Or a rabbit—my ears are normal-sized, I think, but I can do a rabbit. Voice actors are really character actors.
You met your wife of 30 years, Pam, while doing improv. She’s a writer now. One of your sons is a jazz musician in New Orleans; the other just graduated from college with a theater degree. What’s it like to be surrounded by creative people?
Yes, we’re a family of artists. It’s really nice to have that support, and I think my kids are happy, which is the most important thing. How has the pandemic changed the industry?
You don’t get into this to sit by yourself in the studio. When you’d go into a New York studio, you might see the producer, the casting director, the engineer, other actors. Now, we’re all home. But creative people don’t just find creative solutions for creative stuff; they find creative solutions for everything. And with Zoom and the technology available today, we’ve made it happen. My home studio was built pre-pandemic in 2014 or 2015—I needed it when the pandemic hit, and a lot of people were scrambling. While I miss the interaction with live people—that is coming back, fingers crossed—the industry and technology have adjusted.
You’ve done voice acting for popular video games like Grand Theft Auto , Fallout 76 What are your favorite projects?
Bill Lobley jokes that he came out of the womb and did a soliloquy. “The doctor slapped me, and I’m like, ‘What light through yonder window breaks...?’” Lobley has indeed had a prolific acting career, but you might not recognize the River Edge resident if you saw him on the street. That’s because he’s best known as a voice actor. You may have heard him in the 2021 film Nightmare Alley or on the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit or in numerous animated projects for kids or adults—he was memorable, for example, as Sparks, the communications officer in the satirical series Sealab 2021 on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming from 2000 to 2005.
My favorite project is always my current project. I do get fan mail for quite a few video games, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been pulled from the geeky dad fire when my kids’ friends hear I was in some of the more popular games.
What are you looking forward to in your career?
I’d love to continue doing more animation, having done commercials and video games for so long. Then there’s the possibility of being more involved in a series as a creator, or even on-camera. The door is wide open.

Low levels of vitamin B have been shown to increase risk of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including spiked blood pressure, blood sugar and elevated cholesterol levels. The result is a heightened risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Folks with the highest intake of vitamin B9 cut their risk of metabolic syndrome by 61 percent. Other Bs are helpful too: Study participants who took the most B6 reduced their risk by 39 percent, and risk for those taking the most B12 was 26 percent.
It’s the season to be sneezin’, but a Bergen doctor explains that to some degree, suffering is optional.
You may be excited over the sight of flowering buds and blooming trees at this time of year, but there’s more than spring enthusiasm in the air. Pollen, mold spores and other airborne allergens are abundant, and people who suffer from seasonal allergic rhinitis are rightly wary of their effects.
Seasonal allergies (alias hay fever) affect approximately 60 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms such as sneezing, stuffy nose and itchy and watery eyes are the immune system’s response when pollen grains from trees, grass and other plants enter the body. Some sufferers may also experience itchy skin or worsened asthma.
With warmer temperatures and fewer frosts in recent years, allergy season has been starting earlier and lasting longer. Tree pollen typically begins when winter ends, but Patrick Perin, M.D., chief of Allergy & Immunology at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck and a physician with Allergy Partners of New Jersey, has noticed a shift and is tracking the changing schedule.
“We see a sprinkling of pollen in late February,” he says. “Tree pollen usually rises and peaks over the last two weeks in April through the first two weeks in May.” And symptoms may not stop there, as grass pollen counts increase in May, then ragweed hits its peak from August through October.
The tendency to have allergies is genetic, and symptoms typically show up during childhood. But for some people, symptoms can make their debut later in life.
“Allergies do have a strong genetic component; however, one needs to have exposure to become sensitized,” Dr. Perin explains. “There are also many nonspecific factors that contribute to atopy [predisposition to an immune response], including repeated viral infections and one’s environment. We don’t ‘develop’ allergies, but one can slowly become symptomatic after exposure year after year. Each subsequent year may have greater symptomatology after exposure.”
It’s important to individualize treatment for each patient. An experienced specialist can get a good feel quickly for what combination of medications may work best, taking into account the patient’s specific symptoms and medical history.
For those with occasional symptoms, solutions can be as simple as changing clothes after spending time outdoors and washing your hands and face. “Wash your hair before bed so your pillow doesn’t get full of pollen,” Dr. Perin advises. And take care of Fido too. “Dogs can carry pollen on their coats, so brush them before they roam the home.”
Adults who experience moderate symptoms for the first time can usually treat themselves with an overthe-counter medication such as Claritin or Zyrtec. These antihistamines will reduce overall allergic response and provide symptomatic relief. For those who need more relief from stuffiness and congestion, doctors may suggest an intranasal corticosteroid spray or an intranasal antihistamine spray.
“The nasal steroids take up to one week to work and will only be effective if used daily throughout the allergy season,” our doctor notes.
To combat irritated eyes, a doctor can prescribe drops with vasoconstrictors that eliminate redness by shrinking blood vessels.
Prescription eye drops with either antihistamines or mast-cell stabilizers can be used for longer periods and are better for persistently itchy eyes.
Dr. Perin recommends a course of action that provides “the best relief” and warns that untreated allergies can trigger asthma. “Asthma must be treated appropriately and not with OTC meds as, if left untreated, a patient may require hospitalization,” he says. There are a variety of prescription inhalers, both quick-acting “rescue” inhalers and long-acting antiinflammatory products that can reduce the frequency of attacks. While these medications can provide excellent symptom control, their use must be individualized. When medications fail to provide relief, an allergist may suggest immunotherapy. “Allergy shots are the only potential long-term cure, as they can reprogram the immune system that triggers the allergy symptoms,” Dr. Perin says. Allergy shot treatment is essentially “exposure therapy.” A shot is given once a week over a period of several months until a maintenance dose is reached, and then it’s administered monthly, he says. Patients typically feel some relief after two months. Immunotherapy has been reported to have a roughly 85 percent success rate, but it does involve a significant time commitment on the patient’s part.
Want to sneeze less and have fewer runny-nose episodes this season? Try limiting your exposure to pollen and other allergens by making these smart choices:
• Keep your windows closed at night and, if possible, use air conditioning, which cleans, cools and dries the air.
• Try to stay indoors when the pollen or mold counts are high. If your symptoms are severe, wear a pollen mask if long periods of exposure are unavoidable. When you return indoors, take a shower, shampoo your hair and change clothes.
• Avoid mowing lawns or raking leaves, as this work can stir up pollen and molds. (You can volunteer for an indoor chore instead.)
• Wash bedding weekly in hot water. Do not hang sheets or clothes outside to dry.
• When traveling by car, keep your windows closed.
• Take any medications as prescribed.

Tired of chronic worry? You can’t wish it away, but there are things you can do.
Stress, defined as a state of worry or mental tension about something, is a part of life that’s unavoidable, like taxes and aging. Because there are real situations we need to turn our minds to, stress serves a purpose—we’d be heedless beach balls without it. But when it becomes pervasive or too persistent—when we find ourselves locked in chronic stress even as situations change, or spending endless mental juice on situations we can’t change— then stress can become a threat to both mental and physical health. And according to the American Institute of Stress (yes, there is such an entity), 33 percent of people report
feeling extreme stress. That’s not good. No magic finger-snap can banish life’s issues: Your mortgage payment is late, your candidate’s losing, your child has unsavory friends. But managing stress is a skill at which you can improve, and if you’re handling it this week better than you did last week, you deserve a pat on the back—even if it’s only from you.
Below, you’ll read tips offered by two experts at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center’s Outpatient Behavioral Health Services: Darian Eletto, director; and Shahan Sibtain, M.D., chief psychiatrist. Some of these ideas sound like common sense. But often, among the heavily stressed, common sense isn’t as common as it ought to be.
• Exercise more. We all know that working out can help us achieve weight-loss goals and improve cardiovascular health, but it can help minimize stress too by pumping up those feel-good endorphins. “I like to tell my patients to make it a small, measurable goal each day to be active for any amount of time they feel is manageable,” says Dr. Sibtain. “It could be five minutes, 20 to 30 minutes or even a full hour. So long as they are engaging in a movement they enjoy, it can help contribute to reducing stress.” Basically, anything is better than nothing.
• Eat healthier. What we consume affects how we function physically, mentally and even emotionally. Stick to a balanced diet full of nutrient-rich leafy greens, whole grains and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, and drink lots of water to minimize stress and anxiety and assist brain function. And though you think you may need caffeine to make it through your day, try to minimize it on high-stress days. “Caffeine consumption increases the risk of having panic attacks as well as associated side effects such as increased heart rate, racing thoughts and poor sleep patterns,” says Dr. Sibtain.
• Prioritize your Zs. Sleep decreases cortisol levels, which in turn can minimize stress. Therefore, maintaining good sleep hygiene plays a huge role in our mental health, says Dr. Sibtain; good sleep is an important form of self-care. He says adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep a night to avoid a rise in hormone levels and reduce feelings of stress.
• Consider talk therapy. Psychotherapy is more common today and isn’t as stigmatized
as it was in the past. “What was once a taboo conversation only acceptable for those considered ‘mentally ill’ is now the new norm,” says Eletto. “‘My therapist said’ is the new ‘my mom said!’” And therapy isn’t just for super-hard times in your life. “Therapy is a great way to work on self-improvement, learn new skills, identify ways to manage day-to-day stress and work toward achieving our personal goals,” Eletto says. A mental health professional can make you more aware of your thoughts and emotions and help you find ways to manage the difficult ones. Old influences and old feelings may be closing certain doors that ought to be open to you, and therapy can help open them.
• Take some deep breaths. Slowly inhaling and then exhaling signals the nervous system to calm down; thus deep breathing can have a positive effect on mental health and stress levels. “Deep breathing is a great tool for stress relief because it allows us time to focus on our breath and our bodies,” says Dr. Sibtain. You can do one-off deep breathing as needed throughout your day, or engage in a more formal practice, the doc suggests, such as mindfulness meditations (in-person or via podcast) or yoga. “These tactics can be utilized multiple times a day or week to assist in reducing stress,” he says. How often you’ll need to use them will vary by person.
• Do something. Have you a hobby, something absorbing that you do for the fun and satisfaction of it? No one is saying you must suddenly take up piano lessons or sign up for a needlepoint class, but it’s important to take some “me time” to do whatever it is that you enjoy, even if it’s just five or 10 minutes a day. “Something as small as taking a walk outside or reading a page in a book you like can have a big impact on your stress levels,” says Eletto. “Little moments of self-care add up to big rewards in mental wellness. When you find a coping skill or activity you truly enjoy, you’ll be more likely to practice it.”
Finally, don’t stress over de-stressing. Our experts suggest setting small goals you can realistically accomplish; don’t expect to wake up tomorrow morning ready to lead a silent Buddhist retreat. “A day at a time” is a good approach, and a modicum of positive thinking isn’t against the law either. Hopefully, in handling stress, you’ll have success.
Paint is fine in a pinch, but if you really want to update your space, wallpaper could be the way to go. New trends, styles and textures are a far cry from your granny’s wallpaper of yesteryear; 2023’s are glamorous and sophisticated. And your choice needn’t be especially dramatic or grandiose to contribute to an effective look; sometimes all it takes is a subtle textured paper or a pop of color. BERGEN recently asked five local designers to share wallpaper wisdom—about materials, style, sizing and more.
OUR EXPERTS
Sure, it takes a bit more of a commitment than paint, but wallpaper can also make more of an impact in your space, our designers insist. “Wallpaper can add color, pattern and texture to a room in a way that paint cannot,” says Isaac. “Wallpaper can also be more durable than paint and can help hide imperfections on walls.” If you’re wary of a bold print or pattern, consider a textured wall covering, Lacourte suggests—it can add luxurious depth to a room. Regardless, “wallpaper should reflect the personality of the homeowner and the character of the home, yet still be timeless and work for years to come,” she says. And yes, it can be used pretty much anywhere. Says Cekirge: “In an entryway it can welcome you into the house; in a dining room it can make a statement; in a bedroom it can be romantic; in a playroom it can be fun.”
Where you’re considering putting the wallpaper will help determine what kind you should get. Our designers agree that vinyl, though not the most beautiful, is a popular choice for high-traffic areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms and kids’ rooms. It comes in a wide variety of finishes, including matte, glossy and embossed. Alternatively, says Cekirge, “if you love a non-vinyl paper that will be in a high-traffic area, consider one with a protective fiber-seal coating to help maintain its condition.” Isaac says that non-woven wallpaper is breathable and removable, meaning that it’s perfect for living rooms and bedrooms, while the more highmaintenance grasscloth and the glamorous foil paper work for bedrooms, living rooms and home offices—and particularly for rooms with lower traffic and lower humidity levels.
As with any other design element, the wallpaper you select should fit the room and coordinate with everything else within it. “Think about how you want the space to feel,” says Stevens. “Match the wallpaper with the hard materials and fabric and the overall vibe you’re going for.” You’ll also want to use the room’s architecture, hardware and furniture to guide your choices. However, if a wall covering speaks to you without being necessarily the “matchiest” choice, it’s likely still the one. “Focus less on creating the perfect, cohesive space and more on figuring out how you want your space to feel,” says Titus. “Look for inspiration in magazines or on Instagram, and you’ll be able to identify a style that makes you feel good.”
Walls are the customary location, sure, but you’ll really make a statement by papering in unexpected places—say, the ceiling, the back of a bookcase or in a built-in, LaCourte suggests. Isaac encourages her clients to paper stairwells or hallways to create the effect of a feature wall.
“This can help to create a focal point in an area that may not have any natural points of interest,” she says, “and it’s a great way to add personality to a long, narrow space.” Meanwhile, Titus sometimes papers within panels on walls, using the rest of the wallpaper and the moldings as her inspo.
Besides finding a style you love, you’ll want to consider the size of your room and the scope of your wallpaper print, if applicable, before pulling the trigger. LaCourte says lighter-colored wallpaper in a textured grasscloth or a solid-textured paper will make a smaller room feel more spacious. For the larger spaces, a larger-scale pattern will really pop. “Note that the room must be big enough to handle the repeat pattern, or it could look overwhelming,” LaCourte stresses. Isaac isn’t opposed to prints in smaller spaces, as long as the pattern is soft and subtle. “A paper with a horizontality to the pattern will make a space feel bigger,” she says.
A wallpaper can sometimes feel like a tattoo—painful to get, and even more painful to remove! So, before you move forward with your selection, try it out first at home. “Bring a sample from the showroom and hold it up to everything— the furniture, the paint, the light fixtures, the floor, the windows,” Titus recommends. “Pay attention to how you feel when you hold up each one.” Stevens says many manufacturers will let you order just a yard or one roll of paper that you can sample in a corner of the room to make sure it’s the right texture, color or pattern. Just be certain to observe the sample in different lighting conditions and in a spot on all four walls before committing to the whole room.
How can you make sure your wallpaper looks good as new for years to come? Titus suggests purchasing a wallpaper touch-up kit for your particular type so you can nip rips in the bud before they get worse. “Have a little extra paste or glue on hand in case the corners and edges start to peel up,” she advises. Lacourte suggests dusting your paper often with a dry cloth or a clean duster. “And be mindful to use gentle cleaning products with no harsh or active ingredients,” she cautions.
It wasn’t easy choosing just one, our designers report, but each picked a top-choice wallpaper to recommend:
• “My all-time favorite is Sandberg Raphael wallpaper (pictured). It comes in many different colorways, and each one offers a completely different experience.” —Nicki Rae Titus, Enchanted Home Design, Midland Park
• “We suggest Thibaut Design Solis pattern T10083 in navy to our clients. The blue color is classic and timeless while adding a fun, bold pattern.”
—Patty LaCourte, Patty Lacourte Interior Design, Waldwick
• “For a great neutral, durable option that won’t break the bank, I love Clio by Weitzner.” —Shelley Cekirge, Shelley Cekirge Interiors, Tenafly
• “I love the Zen Grasscloth wallpaper by Arhaus. It’s organic, serene and glamorous.” —Lisa Anisko Isaac, Lisa Isaac Design, Englewood
• “To make a small space feel bigger, I love Phillip Jeffries Brushstroke Silk wallpaper in white #7471.” —Robyn Stevens, Silhouette Studio, Saddle River
Desperately seeking serenity, Tenafly homeowners and their designer imagined a space that would make each day feel like a day at the spa.
Text by Leslie Garisto Pfaff Photography by Justin Jagiello Design by Elizabeth AkgucIn this Tenafly great room, the living area sets a tone for a house that’s serene and spa-like, with an abundance of natural materials and a neutral yet eye-catching palette. The sofa from Lazar in slate-gray velvet is long on style and comfort; its hue is picked up in the Luxurious/Cloud rug from Kane Carpet, the fog upholstery on the armchairs facing the sofa and the walls covered in Benjamin Moore’s Silver Satin.
This page: Custom builtins in stained white oak flank a fireplace wall whose subtle texture is created by vertical strips of painted poplar. Opposite: The white oak of the built-ins in the living area is echoed throughout the great room, in the flooring, the expansive island and the breakfast table in whitewashed oak from Worlds Away. The chairs, from Interlude Home, are also of whitewashed oak and are covered in distressed cream faux leather.
The clients were a busy couple with twin toddlers and a dog. So when they told their designer, Elizabeth Akguc of Agape Design Group in Franklin Lakes, that they were looking for the interior of their new house in Tenafly to radiate a spalike serenity, she wasn’t entirely surprised. And while the aesthetic they requested wasn’t exactly in her wheelhouse, she happily embraced the chance to explore what was for her uncharted territory. “I typically lean toward dramatic and moody,” she explains. “But they didn’t want any dark tones, and they wanted lots of natural elements.”
She delivered the latter with the liberal use of white oak: on the flooring throughout most of the house, on the built-in shelving and cabinetry in the great room’s living area and on the quartz-topped island in the kitchen space. In the breakfast nook off the kitchen, the sleekly modern oval table and curvedback chairs are also white oak. And white oak makes a clever appearance in the dining room, in the form of large, smooth wood panels over the dining table, whose sandstone wood
finish echoes the other pale woods used in the room.
The palette of the house overall is in keeping with the lightswept aesthetic. But while the colors Akguc chose are neutral, they’re anything but dull, thanks in part to the interest she introduced through pattern and texture. The fireplace wall, for instance, is flanked by those white oak shelves and cabinets. Like the marble fireplace surround, the wall is white, but it’s covered in painted poplar slatting. The sectional sofa is a dark gray velvet. And the gray-on-gray pattern on the rug below it has the look of wispy rainclouds floating in an overcast sky.
Pattern and texture also enliven the primary bedroom, where an elongated custom headboard is covered in white channeled velvet. The seat of the bench at the foot of the bed is upholstered in a textured oatmeal velvet. “Texture plays a huge role in making the bedroom feel cozy and welcoming,” says Akguc.
And even though the overall aesthetic is deliberately serene, it’s not without drama. The living room, for instance, stretches two
full stories to the ceiling, where the eye is drawn by a second set of windows, the soaring fireplace wall and two vertical abstract paintings sitting on the top shelves astride the wall.
The most dramatic space of all may well be the dining room. Above the dining table is that eye-catching stretch of pale wood supporting a long, tubular light fixture. Behind the table is a wall painted by a local artist in an abstract design of slender black lines against a white background that confers a sense of playfulness and movement. Originally, Akguc had suggested using wallpaper to achieve a similar result, but the homeowners had balked at the idea of having to strip the paper if they got tired of it. The designer then suggested a mural, which would be simple to paint over if they were in the mood for a change. The mural matches the overall aesthetic of the room, and the entirety of the house. “They wanted it to be dramatic without being too much,” says Akguc. “Light and airy, but with some sort of contrast, which the wall provides.”
That sense of drama in just the right proportion carries over into both the kitchen and the primary bathroom. In the mostly white kitchen, the drama derives from an oversized island topped in white quartz above white oak cabinetry—and from the choice of bronze-hued hardware on the white paintedwood cabinets, a hue that’s carried over into the fabric and metal counter stools, the high arched faucet and the large pendant overhanging the island.
Not surprisingly, the primary bathroom has a minimalist, spa-like feel, with its white quartz double vanity incorporating a wooden shelf below the sinks and clean-lined gold accents (mirror frame, faucets, modern sconces). “The owners wanted it to feel serene and timeless,” says Akguc. “I want them to enjoy this for a very long time without its feeling outdated.” If enjoyment is the equivalent of a long, soft sigh of contentment, the family is likely to be taking comfort and joy in the house for as long as they inhabit it.
This page: The homeowners loved the serene feel of the primary bathroom, brightened by luxurious metallics, as in the gold-finished faucet from Brizo and the brass and etched glass sconces from Visual Comfort. Opposite: The primary bedroom is spa-like without feeling cold, thanks to the designer’s deft use of texture, in both the extended headboard, customupholstered in velvet from Walls Studio, and the bench seat, covered in oatmeal velvet from Sunpan. A smoked-glass pendant from Arteriors offers a touch of soft lighting.
The Wyckoff residents are devoted parents—really they are. But oh, for a sanctuary just for the grown-ups!
Design by Sharon Sherman Photography by Mike Van Tassell Text by Haley LongmanPerhaps more than anyone, busy, working parents with young children need to decompress at the end of a long day, and Parker and Kathleen of Wyckoff saw their primary bathroom as the place for that. Their existing bathroom was medium-sized, with good natural light and decent space. But they hired Sharon Sherman of Thyme & Place Design in Wyckoff to transform it into a spa-like retreat, one that would emphasize rejuvenation and wellness—and be off-limits to their three young children. “They explain to their kids that this is for Mommy and Daddy,” Sherman tells us. “Adults need time to
decompress and wash the world away at the end of the day.”
Parker, the man of the house, is sixfoot-four, so a shower that could accommodate his stature was a must. A built-in bench, a recessed niche to hide the clutter of shampoo bottles and his-and-hers shower heads of varying heights (one of which is hand-held) are nice luxuries, sure. But the selling point here is that this is a steam shower—it was a surprise collab between Sherman and Parker for Parker’s wife. “A steam shower helps reduce stress levels; it’s great for your skin and is good for your respiratory system,” says the designer. Next to the shower is a towel bar, which keeps towels toasty and free of bacteria and mold—they tend to fester in wet bathrooms.
The more petite Mrs. requested a soaking tub, placed deliberately under a big bay window, to ease the tension from her high-stress job; Sherman chose for the
occasion the Bain Ultra freestanding tub, which includes air massage, chromatherapy and a heated back rest. Ahh.
All-white-everything was not on the agenda for this project. Instead, the clients trusted their designer to choose the bold color palette and finishes. It was unanimous that Benjamin Moore’s “Hale Navy” was a perfect choice for the custom vanity. “Navy is my neutral,” Sherman says with a laugh. And the lavender “Sanctuary” on the walls from the same brand is inspired by the Zellige lavender tile from Wayne Tile in Ramsey, laid in a herringbone pattern. “It’s a beautiful neutral tile but with a plum, amethyst undertone,” Sherman notes. “They loved the color choices and trusted me.” Like the unexpected palette pairing, the designer chose mixed metals such as honey bronze sconces and knobs to complement the nickel sink hardware. “I love combinations like that,” says Sherman. “It makes it so
much more interesting to have different materials, metals and colors together.”
Prettiness was paramount here, but Sherman didn’t skimp on practicality. For example, the countertops are quartz, a low-maintenance stone. A middle drawer within the double vanity has a built-in hamper, the mirrors open up to medicine cabinets and there’s a pull-out drawer to house all of Kathleen’s Dyson hair tools and brushes. (Kathleen didn’t feel a need for this at first, says the designer, but now she uses it daily.) A pocket door to the bedroom and a Toto toilet tucked around the corner maximize the space even more.
Truly, this bathroom has changed this couple’s day-to-day routine. “They’re so happy and use all of the bathroom’s features,” Sherman says. “It’s organized, it’s the right size for both of them, they have a place for everything and it’s easy to get ready every morning.” Easy, at least, until it’s time to wake up the kids.
Faced with a pool that needed renovation, Englewood homeowners started from scratch and transformed their backyard into an oasis of fire and water.
Design by Wellington Gomes

An Englewood couple already had a heated backyard pool but wanted an update that would make waves with visiting family and provide an inviting space for entertaining and events. “They knew they wanted to do something but didn’t know the extent of what they were looking for,” says Wellington Gomes, president and designer at SJ Pools and Landscaping in Paramus, whom the couple entrusted with the project. “They were looking for something special.” That’s what they got, and this summer will be the first full season of their refreshing plunge into the new.
The project began with an inspection of the existing pool. When Gomes found cracks, “We decided to go the route of a new pool,” he says. “That provided a lot of flexibility.”
One thing wouldn’t change: the pool’s location. “Most pools are sited close to the house,” Gomes says. “In this case, the pool sits all the
way at the back of the property.”
Beyond that, the entire backyard has been transformed. Gomes’ first order of business: Remove trees and shrubs that blocked views of the secluded pool from the residence. “I like to connect the house to the pool,” the designer explains. “Seeing something beautiful from the home makes you want to go enjoy the outdoors.”
Now, the opened expanse of lawn between house and pool is underscored by two wide steps flanked by low retaining walls. Just beyond, poolside spaces pop with surfaces of sandblasted marble from Marmiro Stones in Carlstadt.
Eyes immediately land on a new hot tub that’s custom-built of porcelain and granite and features perimeter overflow— an infinity-pool style in which water cascades over all edges. “It’s not just a hot tub; it’s a piece of art,” Gomes says.
Across the water, a fire pit, another focal point, beckons you to poolside seating near the flames or under a pergola (all furniture from Vondom or Unlimited Furniture in Brooklyn). The deep-end gathering space also includes a TV and an outdoor kitchen with a refrigerator, along with a kitchenette and bathrooms inside an adjoining structure.
To the sides at water’s edge lie Vondom lounges, some under integrated cabanas. Additional fire features that blaze while spouting water make nights dramatic. “Fire reflects in the water, and the sound is amazing,” Gomes says.
Alluring lighting defines and highlights new landscaping that includes hydrangeas and catmint in clean hues of purple and white. “Every tree I place is situated with lighting in mind,” Gomes says. “The clients believed in our vision.”
They’re glad they did.
Andrea Piazza looks around near her Fair Lawn home and sees what isn’t there. She’s lived in the neighborhood for some three decades, and in that time she’s seen dozens of trees die or be taken down. While there’s also been some replanting, it hasn’t been enough to replace all the trees that have been lost.
“In my neighborhood, and in lots of neighborhoods on my side of town, we have less than 25 percent tree canopy,” she says, referring to the portion of land that would be tree-covered if you were looking at it from above. To get a sense of what that means, consider that the nonprofit conservation group American Forests calls a 40 to 60 percent canopy ideal in suburban areas like ours that were originally forested, and deems a 15 percent canopy optimal in a desert environment.
While Bergen County has long prided itself on its leafy streetscapes, parks and preserves, our trees are under threat from a variety of sources, some of them biological, some human caused. Over the past year, for instance, we’ve seen an influx of spotted lanternflies in numbers that can best be described as biblical; other non-native insects, like the emerald ash borer and the Asian long-horned beetle, likely pose an even greater threat. We’ve also
lost trees to development and—in the case of Leonia’s Overpeck Park, where more than 100 trees were felled in a former nature preserve to create a “great lawn,”—to the cause of soil remediation. (As of this writing, Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco has promised to form a committee to consider alternative plans for the site, in response to objections from environmental groups and private citizens, some of whom have called for the barren area to be replanted as a preserve.)
Climate threatens our trees as well: Last year’s hot, dry summer killed many younger trees around the county, and older trees may start to show its effects over time, especially if the next several summers offer similar droughty conditions. Finally, we’re always losing trees to old age, and these grand old specimens aren’t always replaced in a timely manner.
Tree-lined streets and what’s been called an “emerald necklace” of parks are two of the amenities that draw new residents to Bergen and keep longtime residents from moving elsewhere. To a degree, the value of a tree is calculable: It’s been estimated, for instance, that one or more mature trees can raise the value of a property by up to 15 percent. But trees have more than monetary
value. “Trees make for a healthier community,” says Joel Flagler, a Rutgers professor and the agricultural agent for Bergen County. They clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, he explains, and numerous studies have shown that living among trees can decrease stress and increase well-being. In the hotter months, their shade is invaluable: “It can be 10 degrees cooler in a neighborhood that’s tree-lined, as opposed to a tree desert,” observes Gail Rottenstrich, a Fair Lawn council member who sits on the town’s Shade Tree Committee. Trees also help prevent flooding and soil erosion. In one year, for example, a single mature red maple can soak up 260 gallons of water. Aesthetically, the benefit of trees is immeasurable.
These are just some of the reasons that make saving the county’s precious tree canopy imperative. Luckily, a growing number of municipalities and residents are taking the idea to heart. Unfortunately, not every threat has an easy solution; nevertheless, there are numerous ways residents and municipal officials can respond to make sure that Bergen stays green for generations to come.
• The problem: If last summer was the season of squish, 2023 could be the year of the shrug. Flagler notes that the New Jersey
Bergen’s trees help give the county its character—and so much more. But they’re threatened.
Pfaff
Department of Agriculture (NJDA) has been scouring the data on lanternflies and determined that, so far, the only plants it’s killed are grapevines, tree-of-heaven and saplings. NJDA calls the lanternflies “tree stressors,” which means they’re more likely to do serious damage when combined with other stressors, such as diseases, other pests and drought.
Remedies: Until we have more definitive data, you may want to follow NJDA recommendations: Stomp lanternflies, scrape egg masses with a credit card into an alcohol-filled receptacle, use
Remedies: Monitor beech trees for signs of the disease by holding leaves up to a light source and looking for dark bands between the veins. Currently there’s no known method of treatment. If you spot signs of the disease, consult an arborist about taking down the tree and replanting a different variety in its place.
• The problem: drought. In New Jersey, as elsewhere, summers appear to be getting hotter and drier, threatening trees of all species. “We’re learning that it can take four or five years of normal rainfall for trees to recover from the
• The problem: ignorance, misinformation and mismanagement. Stewart believes that this triple threat represents the greatest danger to Bergen’s trees. “If you have a tree canopy that you want to protect,” she says, “you have to manage it properly.”
Remedies: First, towns and residents need to choose the right tree for a planned site. Street trees should be tolerant of the difficult conditions we’re asking them to endure, from de-icing salt to cramped growing conditions. Towns should also avoid so-called monoculture: planting a single species of tree along a large stretch of road. While the aesthetic effect of monoculture planting is often striking, Stewart notes that “if a pest or disease comes through, it can wipe out a whole street’s trees.”
circle traps (commercially available) on tree trunks and, as a last resort, apply a pesticide, preferably one that can be injected into the tree. (Note, though, that the insecticides most commonly used against lanternflies can be harmful to bees that pollinate the tree.)
• The problem: emerald ash borers (EABs). Like the spotted lanternfly, the emerald ash borer arrived here uninvited from Asia, but it poses a much more significant threat to our native ash trees. The beetle lays its eggs in tree-bark crevices, and the emerging larvae tunnel deeper, feeding on the tree layer just beneath the bark. The EAB has caused the death of thousands of native ash trees across New Jersey. In Fair Lawn alone, says Rottenstrich, it’s infested at least 700 trees, most of which will have to be taken down over the next several years.
Remedies: Working with a certified arborist or licensed tree expert, towns can identify trees that are infested but still relatively healthy and treat them by injecting pesticide through the bark, a process that can be repeated every two to three years. Glen Rock treated its ash trees this way in 2021, and Candy Hall, co-chair of the Glen Rock Shade Tree Committee, says that “the treatment so far has been highly successful, and the majority of treated ash trees have survived.”
If you have ash trees on your property, monitor them for early signs of the beetle before the trees start to die off so that they can be examined and potentially treated by a licensed tree expert. These signs include D-shaped holes in the bark, thinning of the crown and woodpecker damage (though the latter two can also result from drought or infestation by other insects). If a tree is already showing serious symptoms, such as major canopy die-off, your best option is to take it down and plant another variety in its place.
• The problem: beech leaf disease. Scientists don’t yet know the cause of this malady, which appeared about a decade ago and attacks beech-tree foliage, causing it to discolor and curl, eventually killing the entire tree.
effects of a single year of drought,” says Flagler.
Remedies: Liz Stewart, an arborist who works with many Bergen municipalities including River Edge, where she sits on the Shade Tree Commission, advises both municipalities and homeowners to make sure that newly planted trees are watered deeply and regularly for the first three years after planting. When planting street trees, towns should choose varieties that can withstand drought. “The growing strip in which we plant street trees is a really hostile environment,” Flagler says, noting that roots can’t survive under the street, and thus trees’ access to water and air is limited. One of the best native trees for street planting, he advises, is the American linden, with its concentrated root system and tolerance for drought and pollution.
• The problem: construction and remediation. When it comes to construction projects, from major industrial developments to modest home additions, trees are often collateral damage. In Old Tappan, for instance, the construction of a senior living facility is planned for a largely undeveloped tract of land that is home to an abundance of native wildlife. Some 200 mature trees will be cut down to make way for the structure. And trees that have grown for years on landfill, as in Overpeck Park, are often cut en masse when the soil needs to be replaced.
Remedies: Before major construction or remediation projects, municipalities can bring in a licensed tree expert to determine how to minimize tree loss. Don Torino, president of the Bergen County Audubon Society, believes that the Overpeck remediation was probably necessary, but perhaps not on such an extensive scale. In addition, he says, the trees were taken down during the height of nesting season, threatening the survival of hundreds of baby birds. Homeowners considering an addition or other construction work can also consult with a licensed tree expert (and their architect or contractor) to find out how trees can be moved or otherwise saved.
When considering new trees, homeowners need to determine the specific requirements of those trees: How much light and water do they need? How large will they be at maturity? Too often, says Flagler, homeowners “don’t realize a tree is going to quadruple in size, and in 10 years, it’s brushing against the house and blocking the windows and the roots are starting to invade the cellar and push up the sidewalk.”
It’s also important to plant the tree correctly, digging a large enough hole to accommodate the entire root ball and removing any protective covering such as burlap, nylon roping and wire. (For more information on tree care, consult the Cooperative Extension of Bergen County at bergen.njaes.rutgers.edu/contact-us/.)
Consider planting native trees like red maples, northern red oaks and river birches, which are more likely to survive in our soil and climate conditions than popular non-natives like Norway maples and Callery pears. (For a list of trees native to Bergen, go to npsnj.org, the website of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey.) Native trees don’t just have an ecological edge; they also support wildlife. By planting a native tree, says Torino, “you’ll be providing food for the birds and creating a stopover migration area, and helping butterflies too because many species depend on these trees.”
Understanding the value of trees is essential for the survival of our tree canopy. Rottenstrich notes that all Fair Lawn residents are entitled to a street tree, but many don’t request one. Some homeowners, she acknowledges, may not be aware of the tree-planting program, while others simply don’t want the “problems” that come along with trees, such as falling leaves and other debris, and the need for pruning. That’s why the town has launched an education campaign to teach residents about everything that trees provide. Hall offers a concise summary of those benefits: “Often called the lungs of our planet, these living organisms do their work quietly, without fanfare, and generally under a massive amount of stress,” she says. “We ask the public to please be respectful and kind to them; our trees are a limited and valuable resource that isn’t easily replaced.”
“Often called the lungs of our planet, [trees] do their work quietly, without fanfare and generally under a massive amount of stress.”

n 10 cups baby spinach leaves, washed
n salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
n freshly ground nutmeg
n 2 Tbs. distilled white vinegar
n 4 large eggs
n 4 slices buttered toast
n cress or chives finely chopped, for garnish
DIRECTIONS:
Place a saucepan of water over medium heat. You want the water to be simmering, not boiling. Place a heatproof bowl containing the egg yolks over but not touching the pan of water. Start whisking immediately.
Slowly add the butter to the egg yolks, a few pieces at a time, whisking vigorously until it’s incorporated before adding more butter. Keep the temperature beneath the butter on low and take your time, adding the butter slowly. The key thing here is low and slow so the eggs do not scramble. Instead, you want to emulsify the egg and butter together.
Keep cooking and stirring until the hollandaise sauce has thickened enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. If it gets too thick, add a splash of cold water. Season to taste with salt and pepper and add a squeeze of lemon juice for a touch of sharpness to smooth out that creamy richness.
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Pour in the heavy cream, and let simmer for a minute or so, until it starts to reduce and thicken. Throw in the spinach leaves and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until the leaves have wilted. Pull the skillet from the heat and season the spinach with salt, pepper and the nutmeg.
Fill a deepish saucepan with about 3 inches of water and bring it to a gentle, not rolling boil. Add the vinegar and stir to make a whirlpool effect. Crack the 4 eggs carefully into the pot. The whirlpool and the vinegar will help each egg white stay together rather than stretch into some ghastly amoeba-like shape.
Allow the eggs to gently simmer for 2 to 3 minutes. You’re aiming for a wobbly but well-cooked white with a runny yolk. Using a slotted spoon, gently move the eggs to a paper-towel-lined plate to soak up the excess water.
Top the buttered toast with the creamed spinach. If you’ve got the time and the inclination, you can cut the toast into circles just slightly larger than the egg using a biscuit cutter. Carefully place an egg on top of each stack and spoon a generous helping of hollandaise on top. Garnish the eggs Florentine with the cress or chives.
Spinach is a nutritious leafy green vegetable loaded with antioxidants, minerals, vitamins A and C, folic acid, iron and calcium. Spinach is also very low in carbohydrates, which may help if you if you’re trying to lose weight and add insoluble fiber into your diet, which may aid in your digestion.”

Yields 8 servings
INGREDIENTS:
n 4 eggs
n ½ cup heavy whipping cream
n ½ cup unsweetened almond milk
n 1 tsp. olive oil
n ½ cup chopped onions
n ¼ cup chopped green peppers
n ¼ cup chopped red peppers
n ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
n ½ cup shredded Swiss cheese
n 1 tsp. seafood seasoning
n salt and pepper to taste
n 1 sheet refrigerated pie crust
n 8 oz. lump crab meat
n 8 oz. raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Unroll the crust into a 9-inch pie plate. Cover the pie crust with parchment paper and load pie weights or dry beans over the paper and pie plate. This will anchor the crust as it bakes. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove the pie crust and set aside.
Combine the eggs, cream and almond milk in a large bowl. Heat a skillet on medium-high heat and add in the olive oil, red peppers, onions and green peppers. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the onions are translucent and fragrant.
Remove the vegetables from the skillet and add them to the bowl with the eggs and milk.
Add in the lump crab, shrimp and both of the cheeses. Stir to combine. Pour the egg and seafood filling over the pie crust. Bake for 20 minutes.
Adjust the temperature to 300°F and bake an additional 15-30 minutes until the quiche has set. The edges should appear firm and there should be a slight jiggle in the center of the quiche. Add additional bake time if necessary. Allow the quiche to cool for at least 20 minutes prior to slicing.
A combination of almond or soy milk and olive oil is a dairyfree substitute for heavy cream. Olive oil is great if you want that nutty flavor, and it also gives plenty of heart-healthy benefits without the added cholesterol.”

BERGEN COUNTY IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST SEASONED AND TALENTED REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS IN THE COUNTRY. To help readers find the best agents to work with, BERGEN magazine contracted DataJoe Research of Boulder, Colorado to facilitate a multi-faceted research campaign. It consisted of an online survey delivered directly to agents across Bergen County via email as well as internet research. In the survey, real estate agents were asked to provide sales volume ranges and also nominate their peers. In the Internet campaign, DataJoe consulted a variety of websites to build richer knowledge of individual licensed real estate agents across the country.
DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at the time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If they were not able to find evidence of a real estate agent’s current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that real estate agent was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied results to BERGEN magazine for final review.
We recognize that there are many good real estate agents who are not shown on the representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the county.

JOSEPH AZIZ IS THE OWNER & OPERATOR OF PRESTIGE PROPERTY GROUP MONTCLAIR. He is currently in the top 3% of real estate agents in terms of sales in Bergen County. For more than eight years, Joseph has been producing at a high level; he received a Bronze sales award in his first year and a Gold sales award in his second. He has been selling at the Platinum level (more than $20 million annually) ever since!
Joseph started as a real estate investor, but grew frustrated when multiple agents he was paired with didn’t have the knowledge to answer his questions. At the time, Joseph was a high-producing sales rep with Verizon Wireless but decided to get his real estate license. While visiting open houses, he also realized that few agents knew much about a home’s foundation, environmental status or anything mechanical in nature. So he simultaneously decided to obtain a Home Inspectors Certification at Inspection21 in Paramus.
The key to Joseph’s success is aggressive marketing and consistent learning. His social media platform allows his clients’ homes to be seen by more than 200,000 people in very targeted areas. He has even sold
listings virtually to international clients who have seen his videos on YouTube. He can explain the utility room of a home, the foundation, the roof, and even extremely important items such as the septic tank or well. When representing a buyer, he can expertly tell what is worth making an offer on or what is a “can of worms” that will not appreciate or retain value. When representing a seller, he can help give home prep tips before listing and catch issues a Home Inspector would bring up, saving deals— and plenty of time, too.
After eight years of growth and success and serving more than 250 satisfied clients, Joseph opened up Prestige Property Group Montclair with his partner, Rich Van Houten. Word quickly got out and the office now carries more than 40 successful agents. When a listing is posted with anyone from Prestige, that listing is marketed by not just Joseph…but all 40-plus amazing social-media savvy agents!
If you are buying or selling, call Joseph today and have a conversation. If you are a real estate agent, call him for an interview and a tour of his firm’s 2,000-square-foot office in the heart of downtown Montclair.

Give this drink a twist by muddling three slices of cucumbers then add a splash of agave syrup, 1 oz. fresh lime juice, 2 oz. of gin and ½ oz. of B&B brandy. Shake it together and pour over new ice with a cucumber ribbon.”

• BS, Rutgers University; Masters in Cell & Developmental Biology, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey
• Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey
• Dr. Verrico’s path to osteopathy was due to her belief in a holistic approach to patient care and in treating the body as a “whole.”
• As a gynecologist, Dr. Verrico specializes in every aspect of female care from adolescence and reproduction to pre-menopausal and postmenopausal aged women.
For far too long, menopause has been a taboo subject leaving women to suffer through misunderstood physical and emotional symptoms and uncertain about where to seek treatment. But with the average age for menopause at 51 years old, millions of women each year share the experience. The time has come to understand this natural biological process. Menopause is diagnosed as 12 consecutive months without a period and is caused by the loss of follicular function and a decline in circulating blood hormone levels. Symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue, vaginal dryness, genitourinary infections, sleep disturbances, changes in weight, depression/anxiety, mood changes, brain fog, joint pain, and decreased libido. Symptoms can range from four to 10+ years and disproportionately affect ethnic groups differently.
Treating menopausal symptoms is an important decision that needs to be discussed with your gynecologist. Managements include behavioral and lifestyle changes, herbal and botanical supplements, bioidentical and synthetic hormones, and SSRIs. It is essential to listen to patients to get their health goals and concerns met and to design a personalized plan for their gynecological and overall well-being.
Tips from Dr. Farinas-Han for good oral health and a confident smile….
• Schedule professional cleanings and exams regularly for oral hygiene maintenance
• Be proactive; nothing in dentistry gets better on its ownaddress the problem so that small issues don’t become big ones
• My golden rule….if you lose a tooth, replace it; otherwise it’s a domino effect
• If you are not happy with your smile, do something about it. Talk to a dentist for guidance in terms of limitations, expectations and aesthetic balance and be sure to take an active part in your smile makeover. The positive life impact is immeasurable
• Good tooth alignment and a healthy bite is key for tooth longevity
• The expectation of wearing dentures in advanced age is now a myth. Follow these tips for good oral health and keep your dentition for life
Whether from a fall, biting down on hard food or candy, neglecting to wear your retainer or nightguard, or a mishap with a toddler, nothing leaves one more self-conscious than a chipped front tooth. A chip on a younger patient can usually be restored with a simple white composite filling restoration. Most dentists, like myself, believe that it’s best to wait until the patient has finished growing to use something more permanent like a veneer. With adult patients, crowns and veneers are usually the most esthetic choice since porcelain allows the dentist to have more control of the design, shape, alignment and color.
My recommendation is to replace the missing tooth to avoid any shifting of adjacent teeth, super eruption of opposing teeth or bone loss in the area. The question is should I get an implant or a bridge? To back up just a bit, an implant is a titanium piece placed in your bone where the old root used to be. The implant holds a crown through a piece called an abutment. If the patient is a candidate, then placing an implant is always a great solution since we do not have to touch adjacent teeth. An implant replaces the missing tooth and functions as an independent unit. The con can be the duration of treatment as compared to a bridge, an implant procedure can take anywhere from three to eight months.
A bridge is made up of two or more crowns fused together. With a bridge, the extracted root will not be replaced; instead, the adjacent teeth are prepared to receive crowns and hold the missing tooth. So for example, with the common 3 unit bridge, the central broken tooth is extracted and the adjacent two teeth, one to the right and to the left, get reduced to receive 3 crowns that are fused together. It is important to remember that with bridges flossing in between teeth is no longer possible since the crowns are fused together.
In either case, I work closely with my patients to talk through the pros and cons of their individual case, and the best options to bring back a beautiful smile.

I admit it: My first visit to what many consider one of New Jersey’s best sushi restaurants didn’t go exactly as I’d hoped in every particular. Ah, but I’m so glad I went.
The restaurant opened its first location in Somerville some six years ago and expanded to Ridgewood soon after, winning the favor of sushi connoisseurs and first-timers alike. In February a third location opened in Leonia, a notable hot spot for sushi fanatics. On a busy March evening, a companion and I checked the place out.
The VIP room, a private area where eight guests sit for omakase, was out of the question. Reservations for this exclusive experience—in which a master sushi chef prepares a five-dish meal according to what’s in season and what he or she is in the mood for—must be made weeks in advance. (We made a note for the future.) A seat in the dining room would have to do.
Second, we were told just as our appetizers were about to hit the table that one of the plates we’d ordered had already sold out. Our server, Christine, waited with utmost patience as I searched the menu for a replacement item.
Let’s talk about those apps. My friend ordered the tempura appetizer, a shareable dish of lightly battered and golden-fried shrimp and veggies, such as potato, onion and squash. I always feel plenty of joy when I bite into a tasty piece of tempura, even when the steamy food beneath the batter burns the tongue and roof of the mouth. Shumi’s version was no different from other good ones: flavorful, hot to the touch and satisfying.
Our second starter was fatty tuna poke tartare, a last-second substitute for the sold-out galbi (marinated short ribs). Our chef piled the raw fish as high as he could atop a bed of fresh greens and rice, topping the mound of tuna with a single piece of uni. Though I had craved a red-meat appetizer, the meticulously plated tartare was a worthy and delicious alternative.
To make up for the short-rib shortfall, our chef sent us a complimentary third appetizer, chopped fatty tuna with caramelized miso sauce over a sushi-sized ball of crispy rice. It was yet another appetizer option that we had the good fortune to try—and we’d consider ordering it on our next visit. I caught the eye of the chef who had sent the plate to our table,
and we exchanged appreciative nods. Shumi takes customer service seriously. When the first part of my entrée arrived, Christine corrected the serverin-training, who had improperly placed my chef special bluefin tuna roll in front of me. (The diner should have perfect view of everything inside and out of the roll.) It’s a detail that few might notice, but an important one to Shumi staff. There was no mistake with the second part of my main course, katsu curry. The panko-crusted pork cutlet was fried to crispy perfection and placed delicately over a bed of rice. It’s served with a side of curry, an aromatic and mouthwatering stew filled with vegetables and chunks of meat. I’d be content eating just the rice and curry, but it’s a total taste-bud treat when the katsu is mixed with everything else.
For her entrée, my friend ordered chirashi, a chef’s choice of the house’s finest cuts of sashimi and other ingredients over a large bowl of sushi rice. Multiple pieces of delectable salmon, tuna, fatty tuna, mackerel and shrimp as well as soft-shell crab and other seafood filled the bowl, creating a colorful pallet—one that was almost too pretty to disrupt. But grumbling stomachs prevailed, and we both dug in and savored every bite.
Instead of dessert, I usually cap a sushi experience with a piece of tamago. Thankfully, my friend’s chirashi included two bites of the sweetened egg, so I wasn’t compelled to ask for the menu after dinner.
As we wrapped up, we noticed a constant flow of customers filing in, each greeted by the jovial chefs shouting in unison from behind the sushi bar “Irasshaimase!” (welcome). We also observed our server Christine explaining an assortment of menu items to, and answering a litany of questions from, another dining couple evidently new to the sushi scene. Our guess was that those folks would be leaving happy just like us. Though many dishes are priced higher here than their counterparts at other restaurants, the quality of ingredients, care for presentation and focus on service at Shumi can’t be matched.
