Your most trusted professionals are local, why isn’t your financial advisor?
Sometimes there is no substitute for meeting face to face. And while the pandemic made working remotely and video conferencing a norm, we believe meeting in person about your financial life is still better.
Face-to-face meetings allow for a natural flow of communication that can help make it easier to talk about tough topics, make hard decisions, and better understand planning strategies. Additionally, intangible actions like a simple handshake can often influence confidence and trust.
You have quick and convenient access to other important professionals in your life, why would access to your wealth be more than five minutes away?
When you work with Eric L. Kohlmeier at Wells Fargo Advisors, you’ll enjoy easy access to the personalized financial advice you need. Come visit us at 100 Park Avenue in Park Ridge.

One danger faces home-design magazine articles, and I’m afraid we’re not immune. In describing the transformation of a home or room, there’s a tendency to be too hard on the “before” picture. Damning terms like “dark” and “cluttered,” and—worst of all—“outdated”—can suggest to the credulous reader that the pre-renovation home was a hellhole. Very often that’s not the case.
Actually, it’s a freeing insight. There is no test of terribleness your home must pass before you undertake a redesign project. Even beloved designs that were brilliant in their day sometimes need an update. (Think how folks dressed in the ’70s.) There are trends in home design; today we favor sunnier exposures, brighter palettes, subtler themes, more open layouts, more practical traffic flow and more provision for home-office use. A renovation can better suit your family’s life today—while building on the virtues your home already has. My secret agenda for this Home Issue, then? It’s really OK if you kind of like your house already. And it’s also fine—so long as you’re prepared for the expense and the temporary disruption—to make it even better.
“The room’s architecture is beautiful,” designer Diane Durocher says about the great room in a Mahwah home (page 48), praising not her own work but the canvas on which she began it. It was part of her mission, she felt, not just to introduce new features (like a seating area flanking the fireplace), but also to highlight splendid existing elements, such as “soaring” 20-foot windows (which she dressed in satin panels). The home was built at a time when “more was more,” she explains, so “we pared down many of the embellishments.”
Changes were more dramatic in a Closter kitchen renovated by interior designer Aparna Vijayan (page 52)—including work stations that make holiday feasts more practical and the vibe more serene. But, as she says, “we didn’t change the room’s footprint at all; the slanted ceilings and skylights were already there.” Similarly, Jennifer Pacca added beams to a vaulted ceiling to enhance the warmth of a Paramus living room (page 44), but left alone an arched entryway that was already wonderful. Entryways, of course, are a home’s chance to make a first impression. On page 58, five Bergen design experts tell how to make yours dazzle. Lighting, mirrors, millwork and rugs are all parts of the aesthetic equation—and don’t forget functionality. (It’s nice to have a place to shed muddy shoes.)
There’s more, of course, beyond beautiful homes in this issue. Meet a sixth-generation farmer on page 36. Read on page 64 of the challenges that face Bergen’s booming population of boomers—and other oldsters. Learn about headaches and how to beat them on page 42. Sample ramen in Old Tappan on page 104. And the Easter-egg hunts we help you find (page 21) just may make your kids egg-static.
This issue of BERGEN, like every other issue, is all about helping you achieve a better life. Even if your life is already pretty great.
Enjoy!

• Willow & Whisk, Wyckoff. Named best brunch location in the 2024 Readers’ Choice poll, this popular spot does several types of pancakes, including a heavenly cinnamon swirl. *319 Franklin Ave., Wyckoff, 201.425.9931

Dog: Clover, a 21/2-year-old mini-Australian Labradoodle
Owners: Carolyn and John Greenberg of Ramsey
Love at first sight can make you do crazy things, but it all worked out for the Greenbergs. When they were browsing a farmers’ market in Saranac Lake, N.Y., a local dog breeder walked by with a wagon filled with adorable puppies. “We were immediately smitten,” recalls Carolyn, “and we were in search of a medium-sized, active and hypoallergenic dog.” She later connected with the breeder, and Clover entered the Greenbergs’s lives.
Clover loves to hike in the woods, play fetch and cuddle on the sofa. She spends her indoor time watching animals on television, especially dog videos on YouTube and the horses on Yellowstone Outside, Clover chases birds and chipmunks with great enthusiasm. Though she will join her humans on a boat or kayak, this gal isn’t much of a swimmer—but she’ll always run into the water to fetch a stick.
Clover’s greatest skill is connecting with people. “She’s very sensitive to human emotions and tries to comfort anyone who is feeling sad or stressed,” Carolyn reports. “She will try to lick all your tears away. Since she was a tiny puppy, if someone’s hugged her in their lap, she’s wrapped her paws around their wrists to hug them back.”

You twist your ankle stepping off the curb and the area around the injury immediately begins to swell and fill with heat. Blood circulation increases and an army of white blood cells rushes the area to ward off the perceived threat and prevent further injury. The same happens if you cut your foot on a sharp shell while walking on the beach, when you get the flu from your children or grandchildren, or if you bump your head on a cabinet door that your spouse forgot to shut.
In acute doses, inflammation is a vital immune response that harnesses the potential to protect us. So why is inflammation always getting a bad rap?
“Unfortunately, this immune response sometimes occurs when it shouldn’t and for longer periods of times than is necessary,” shares Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine in Montclair. “Autoimmune disorders, untreated injuries, exposure to toxins - all of these can be causes for chronic inflammation.
The biggest culprit though, is stress.
Janet D. of Livingston sought treatment at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine after several doctors and specialists were unable to treat what she thought was run-of-themill arthritis. “I hurt all the time and while I’ve always managed to get out of bed, some days it felt like getting up in the morning was going to be the hardest thing I did in this life.”
Before she consulted with Dr. Aleksandra, Janet had tried prescription medications, steroid injections, and physical therapy with little to no success. “I was at the end of my rope. My husband was at the end of his. He is the one who first read about Dr. Aleksandra and how she is using acupuncture and ozone therapy to treat pain and fatigue. The only thing I had to lose at that point was him. He’s been so kind and patient through this whole
ordeal, but I could tell this was just as hard on him as it was on me. I mean who wants to watch while the person they love suffers nearly every day.”
The staff at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine understands that the chronic pain and complicated conditions they specialize in treating are often a family affair and encourages loved ones to accompany patients to their consultations, even treatments. Dr. Aleksandra explains, “It’s very rare that the kind of pain our patients suffer from is felt alone. It causes disappointment when they have to cancel plans with their family. It causes resentment when they don’t feel well enough to do the things their spouse wants to do. It causes frustration when they are unable to play with their grandchildren. So, when our patients have a support system on their healing journey, it greatly increases their chances of success, of getting back to living their life.”
Having a loved one present has also proven to be beneficial during the consultation process. “As we discussed Janet’s medical history and delved into when her pain and fatigue started, her husband mentioned that it was around the time they lost their son,” shares Dr. Aleksandra.
“It’s just not something I normally discuss.” tells Janet. “Especially with people I just met. There are still so many emotions surrounding that day.”
In Janet’s case, this turned out to be vital information. As Dr. Aleksandra shared, stress can be a major contributor to chronic inflammation and the emotional turmoil from losing a loved one, especially a child, is quite simply unfathomable. Studies have shown that people who have recently lost a loved one have inflammation levels 54% higher than average. And when you consider that chronic inflammation is at the root of major health disorders like heart disease, cancer, obesity,
and autoimmune conditions, it’s safe to say that you can quite literally die from a broken heart.
Of course, inflammation caused by stress goes way beyond grief and loss. The staff at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine have seen chronic inflammation in patients with high stress jobs, couples who are going through a divorce, and even people in the process of building their dream home. The body reacts to stress by releasing chemicals and hormones that are meant to be short term but when that stress is unmanageable or continues for long periods it can cause increased inflammation and a myriad of other chronic health problems.
Janet has been a patient of Dr. Aleksandra for almost three months and couldn’t wait for the opportunity to sit down and share her success story. “I never understood how tiny needles and oxygen can make such a huge difference, but at this point I’m so happy it doesn’t matter… [Dr. Aleksandra] saved my life, and my marriage! I’m still grieving and l’m not sure that will ever go away but the treatments, the staff—it’s reduced my physical pain, so I finally have the energy to face life, to show up.”

On Stokes Farm, local agriculture is a legacy seven generations strong. Ron Binaghi III of Harrington Park is proud to carry it forward.
Here’s a classic American story: In 1873, Isaiah Stokes immigrated from England to the United States. He borrowed $600 and with it bought 40 acres of land in what is now Old Tappan, where he founded Stokes Farms. Now, 152 years and seven generations later, Stokes Farms is still going strong—it’s one of Bergen’s oldest single-family-run businesses. And Isaiah’s descendants are still working the land themselves.
Few know that farm better than Ron Binaghi III. At 40, he’s generation six (his children are generation seven), and he grew up working side by side with his parents at Stokes. Now one of the owners, he is guiding the farm into what he hopes is a stable and prosperous future. Binaghi lives in Harrington Park with his wife, Jen (who is also involved in the farm’s operation), and his five children, ranging from 8 to 16.
Tell us about the farm’s legacy.
Seven generations is a long time! It’s like a weight on my shoulders to be the caretaker of that legacy and make sure that this business, family and land are carried to the next generation. A lot of times, I feel like a placeholder in the grand scheme of things, holding onto it until the next person comes along. We’re trying to leave the land a little better than we found it. What was it like to grow up at Stokes? It was fantastic. When I was a little kid, I just assumed that everyone had a farm, until I was in second or third grade and realized that a lot of other kids’ parents were lawyers or something. My sisters and I come home from school and know exactly where our parents were—on the farm, in the farm store or running a farmers’ market. It was also nice to be able to just go outside and pick tomatoes for the salad—or the salad itself. When did you start to take a more active role? I was 19. I was in between a few things—college,
other classes—and was working full time at the farm. My dad saw an opportunity at a new farmers’ market opening in New York City, on 65th Street and Broadway. It became totally my project. He said, “This is yours. Nobody’s calling to check in on you or tell you what to do.” I really never looked back. We still do that market to this day. How has the farm changed over the years?
We’ve expanded more into U-Pick—flowers and strawberries—and other hands-on events, like “plant-and-sip” nights. I think that’s the future for small farms like ours.
Why’s that?
With big-box stores and Amazon, people now view grocery shopping or buying farm-fresh produce the same way they view doing their banking—as an inconvenience to get over with
quickly. They don’t have time to go to the fish market, the farmers’ market and the butcher shop. I think the internet made that obvious, because these things can just be delivered to your house. People are asking, “What can I do on your farm that I can’t do online? I can buy a zucchini anywhere.” And what I’ve found is that people really want to reconnect with where their food comes from, and that picking strawberries or flowers really evokes memories. We hear so many stories— people say, “Oh, my grandmother had a farm; I used to do this with her,” or “I used to pick tomatoes from my grandfather’s garden.” People pick bouquets to bring to their loved ones in nursing homes. That can’t be duplicated on Amazon.
So there’s a psychological appeal?
The news is scary right now—there’s always something about an E. coli or salmonella outbreak. People want to trust in those who grow their food. They feel safer because they’ve seen and spoken to the people handling it. I think there’s a lost art in that—in butcher shops and fish markets and other places where you can form a connection with what you’re eating.
What’s it like to work with your family?
It really brings us closer. I remember working with my grandparents when I was a child. Now, with my kids, we say that every day is like “Take Your Child to Work” day. It’s cool to look forward to the next generation and see what comes next. I’ve started having those conversations with my oldest, who is 16. Not all the kids have to be farmers. Maybe they’ll be bakers or help with the accounting. Maybe they’ll want to do something we haven’t even thought of yet.
Something you’re excited about?
I’ve been working here full time for 21 years, and I still get excited for opening the season in April.

Micronutrient deficiency, where levels of vitamins and minerals essential for healthy bodily function are far too low, is common in people with type 2 diabetes, finds a recent study. A lack of vitamin D is the most common “missing” micronutrient, overall, with women at greater risk than men of these deficiencies.

Chemotherapy is linked to persistent peripheral nerve pain (neuropathy) for around 4 in every 10 patients treated with these drugs, suggests recent data. The drugs used to treat cancer damage healthy cells and tissues, including the nervous system. Effects can include movement disturbances, such as loss of balance or coordination, and sensory disturbances, such as loss of sensation, numbness, tingling (pins and needles) or a burning sensation on the skin.

“Good” (HDL) cholesterol, usually considered to be beneficial for health, may be linked to a heightened risk of glaucoma—at least among people over the age of 55— according to a recent study. Paradoxically, “bad” (LDL) cholesterol, usually regarded as harmful to health, may be associated with a lower risk of glaucoma, a condition that damages the optic nerve, potentially leading to irreversible sight loss or total blindness.

HEADACHES COME IN SEVERAL KINDS AND HAVE MANY CAUSES. BUT KNOWING YOUR OWN PATTERNS CAN HELP YOU MINIMIZE HAZARDOUS “TRIGGERS” AND SPEND MORE TIME PAIN-FREE.
Do you ever wonder wake up in the morning with a mysterious headache—and wonder why? Even after a restful eight hours of sleep, the annoying pain thwarts the start of the day. But you look out the window, and now it makes sense: It’s cloudy and rainy; the weather must be to blame.
Weather and fluctuating barometric pressure are indeed associated with some headaches. Other headache “triggers” include stress and anxiety, certain foods and beverages, sleep deprivation and dehydration—and genetics and hormones can contribute to making them more likely. Headache is one of the most common medical complaints, but it can be complicated to manage. In some instances, a headache may indicate something more serious that needs attention.
“Headache pain comes from the release of certain neurochemicals by nerve endings near blood vessels in the protective layers around the brain,” says Farzana Nanavati, M.D., a neurologist with the Englewood Health Network.
“At the same time, nerve receptors in the head become more sensitive, making the pain worse. As for why this happens, that’s still not completely understood.”
For that reason, Dr. Nanavati says, it’s important that we understand the different types of headaches, causes and treatment to help manage them effectively.
Headaches divide into two main categories: primary and secondary. “Primary headaches happen on their own rather than being triggered by another condition,” our expert says. Common types include tension and cluster headaches and migraines. The most frequent type, a tension headache causes dull, constant pain, typically across the forehead or the back of the head and neck. A cluster headache is a severe pain that occurs in groups (sometimes multiple headaches a day over some time). These are often accompanied by watery eyes or nasal congestion.
“Migraines can be caused by genetics, hormones, certain foods, weather changes, stress or lack of sleep,” Dr. Nanavati says. “Some start with warning signs like flashing lights or blurry vision before the headache begins. The pain usually affects one side of the head, lasts for hours and can come with nausea, dizziness and extreme sensitivity to light, sound or smells. Even after the headache is gone, many people feel exhausted and have trouble focusing.”
Secondary headaches, on the other hand, are caused by another medical issue such as respiratory infections like the flu, sinus congestion, meningitis, arthritis in the neck or even dental problems such as impacted molars or jaw clenching.
“Most serious causes,” Dr. Nanavati adds, “include brain tumors, aneurysms or intracranial bleeding. Sleep problems like insomnia or sleep apnea can also contribute to headaches. Even frequent use of painkillers for migraines can lead to what’s known as a medication-overuse headache.”
If headaches are frequent, severe or an unusual departure from your norm, “it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor to determine the cause and best treatment plan,” Dr. Nanavati. says. “If migraines change in pattern, become persistent or come with new or worsening symptoms, it’s time to see a doctor.” Headache sufferers should
not to take symptoms lightly, as doctors have seen patients try to work through intense pain, or work through nausea, light sensitivity and aura. These can be signs of migraine that require treatment and attention.
Treatment can vary depending on the type and severity of the headache. For mild headaches, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be effective. For more severe cases, like migraines, beta blockers, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) antagonist medications, calcium channel blockers, Botox, antidepressants or anticonvulsants may be prescribed. Dr. Nanavati suggests using painkillers sparingly, however, as their overuse can make headaches worse over time. Other treatments may include acupuncture or physical therapy. If left untreated, frequent headaches can lead to anxiety, depression, irritability and even subtle brain changes that affect thinking and processing speed, the doctor says. “The good news is that there are now highly effective treatments with minimal side effects,” she adds. “If headaches are interfering with your life, talk to your doctor about your options.”
Avoiding headaches altogether is unlikely— everyone gets them—but you can reduce the likelihood of developing one. “Avoiding known triggers is key, especially for migraines,” says Dr. Nanavati. Regular sleep, hydration, stress management techniques (yoga or meditation, for example), reduction of screen time and a balanced diet can help manage headache frequency and severity. In some cases, imaging tests such as an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging study) or CT (computed tomography) scan may be ordered to rule out structural problems or tumors.
Also consider keeping a headache diary to track triggers and patterns. Persistent headaches that you can’t relieve with conventional remedies should be evaluated. If steps like rest, hydration and taking over-thecounter pain medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen don’t help after a week, or your headaches keep getting worse, don’t hesitate to discuss the problem with your doctor.
Subtle changes to a Paramus living room make a big difference.

Everything in their Paramus living room suited the homeowners’ needs, but the young husband and wife wanted more out of that busy space. That’s why, in late 2023, they reached out to interior designer Jennifer Pacca, who was tasked with redoing the living area and injecting a little more character into it.
“It was a very well-done room, but it was in need of an update,” says Pacca, who runs an eponymous design firm based in Wyckoff. “The space is right off the kitchen
Wooden ceiling beams, built-in shelves and storage and upholstered curtains add warmth and coziness to this Paramus living room. A Vanguard Furniture sofa and a Bernhardt chair with ottoman provide the perfect seats for the homeowners to soak up the vibe.

and is the main hub of the home. They wanted something that was elegant, warm and inviting.”
The space had good bones with which to work, including a tall ceiling and an arched entryway. Many of its features, however, didn’t have charm or personality.
“The room lacked detail,” the designer notes. “There was a large, vaulted ceiling with nothing on it.”
To dress up the ceiling, Pacca installed beams to add feelings of warmth and coziness. Meanwhile the aesthetics and functionality around the fireplace, an area that had been bare, were improved with built-in storage units. “The built-ins were added to unify the wall and make [the fireplace] a stronger focal point,” she says.
Though the arch was unchanged, Pacca did style the living room’s entrance with accents: A Bernhardt console and artwork from Palecek extend a warm welcome into the space.
The large windows, perhaps Pacca’s favorite part of the room, were originally plain as well, so she added visual interest to them with upholstered curtains made from JAB Fabrics.
For comfort and character, a large sectional sofa by Vanguard Furniture was selected as the room’s primary seating option—perfect for the couple, their two teenage boys, their family and their friends.
An armchair and ottoman by Bernhardt and a pair of accent chairs by Lexington provide additional seating for larger get-togethers, while the Revelation coffee table and Kravet rug lend more warm vibes. Throw pillows in neutral shades as well as pops of purple create a similarly cozy feeling, but can easily be swapped when seasons or moods change.
At a glance, the changes to the living room were subtle—walls remained intact, and floor plans stayed the same. There’s a new ambience, however, with more character and a design that, Pacca says, fits “very well” with the homeowners’ lifestyle.
Thoughtful touches turn a Mahwah great room into a grand, cohesive space.
Every large-scale project needs a cherry on top, the final exclamation point when work is completed. For a pair of Mahwah empty nesters, the last piece of their home’s redo was an expansive great room, and they relied on Diane Durocher of her Ramseybased eponymous interior design firm to put everything together.
Durocher started work in the six-bedroom home in 2017, redoing the kitchen as well as the family and dining rooms. The second phase came soon after, with a redesign of the primary and one other bedroom. For the third and final phase, the designer used much of the great room’s existing structure to her advantage and worked around it to refresh the space.
“The room’s architecture is beautiful, symmetrically designed with the fireplace as the focal point,” Durocher says. “By creating the seating area that flanks the fireplace, we made it so you are immediately drawn into this room. It’s casual elegance that encourages conversation.”
A pair of armchairs and two faux leather ottomans from
Master Interiors as well as a sofa upholstered in teal create the ideal gathering place in front of the fire.
“This client loves teal; it’s their favorite color,” notes Durocher. “We incorporated touches of teal in the room, which is next to the family room. Both rooms [as well as the nearby office] needed to ‘talk to each other’ and have a cohesive flow. It was important that the palette and patterns coordinated seamlessly.”
She also highlighted the room’s other features, namely the 20-foot-tall windows and the molding around the space.
“The windows are soaring,” she says. “We celebrated their height by dressing them in satin panels with a stunning band that accents the room’s palette. For the molding, we removed a few of the overlay trims that dated the room. We then painted the trim a soft white to emphasize the texture.
“This home was built in the early 2000s, when more was more,” the designer adds. “We pared down many of the embellishments, while keeping the essence of the architecture.”

A Closter kitchen, redeemed from a clumsy design and a sea of sterile white, proves the answer is yes.

A large and gregarious family needed a better kitchen. There were the homeowner couple and their three school-age kids and two Boxers in the main house, and the wife’s parents in the guest house of the one-acre property, and they all required a kitchen that would keep pace with their multifaceted lifestyle and active social life. Before the project, the kitchen of their 4,267-square-foot Closter colonial, built in 1949, was a typical, large ’90s space with little warmth, a less-than-ideal layout and no visual focus or balance.
Working with Aparna Vijayan of Ulrich Inc. in Ridgewood, the homeowners set about changing all that. Their collaborative mission: turn the mostly white, generic-looking space into practical work stations with personality plus. The design team was also tasked with refashioning
For their kitchen in a Closter colonial “the homeowners requested a fun, entertaining space with lots of interesting design details,” says designer Aparna Vijayan. The wife’s verdict when the work was done? “Aparna nailed it.”
This page: Creating visual interest as well as spatial symmetry, the distinctive curvature of the range/plaster hood nook mirrors angles in the breakfast area on the other side of the room.

adjacent auxiliary locales: a walk-in pantry, a mudroom, a powder room, a dedicated pet-food spot and shoe closets. “These areas help keep the main kitchen neat and uncluttered for other functions,” Vijayan says.
“Family gatherings were our primary motivation,” says homeowner Daniela Gorenstein, noting that she and her husband Andrew love celebrating holidays. Since moving there in 2011, they’ve often invited 50-plus relatives to their home for a holiday bash. “The kitchen is the largest room in the house, with the best view of our patio and garden,” the wife adds. “We wanted to improve the space’s functionality for both us as hosts and our family as guests. We also wanted to maximize the view and bring the outside in.”
The initial inspiration for the renovation was their neighbors’ kitchen, a project Vijayan and others on the Ulrich team had done. “We found their kitchen not only beautiful and functional, but unique and fun. It was the first kitchen we felt excited about, so we called Aparna to kick off a year-long design process of our own,” Daniela says. Her project was completed in fall 2023.
The aim was a modern, farmhouse-style kitchen that would embrace both traditional and contemporary elements. To make the space feel “fresh and inviting with just the right amount of drama,” Vijayan contrasted upper cabinets painted in airy Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White with the central island and lower cabinets anchored in rich Sherwin-Williams Naval. “Having all-white cabinetry would have made the large space seem sterile,” she explains. “The blue is very handsome and grounds the kitchen.” The blue-and-white palette proclaims classic simplicity while stainlesssteel appliances, such as the 48-inch Wolf gas range, exude sleek modernity. The hand-painted Carrara tiles behind the range and bar cabinet add a multicultural flair, a nod to the couple’s heritage. (Daniela is Filipina/Syrian; Andrew is Eastern European). Classic yet edgy, oversized pendants, all from Krell Lighting in Park Ridge, spark a fresh sensibility while the striking, gray-andwhite, 24-inch-by-24-inch, checkerboard porcelain tile flooring leans into the farmhouse feel. Details like white oak floating
shelves, Hafele wicker baskets instead of drawers and an edge-grain, butcher-block countertop contribute to the homespun appeal.
To maintain the streamlined look without relinquishing an inch of function, Vijayan took a “divide to conquer” approach, creating designated stations customized to accommodate the homeowners’ needs and preferences. The work triangle is completely separate from the fridge/pantry/beverage/coffee station, which is placed in one line adjacent to the kitchen island. This allows family members and friends to access their own drinks easily and then take a seat at the island without getting in the way of whoever’s preparing meals. Another convenient addition: two separate sets of garbage/recycling bins—one by the sink, the other near the beverage section—so that guests on their way to toss trash don’t mess with the cook’s flow.
The range was relocated from the island to its own corner. Daniela explains: “I didn’t like cooking at the center of the island and blocking the view for anyone sitting there. The former exhaust system also came from below the island and never worked well. Aparna’s
choice to remove a useless corner window and place the range and hood in that space was brilliant. It’s not only functional and beautiful, but also out of the way, maintaining the integrity of the view, which is what we wanted.”
Along with existing French doors and skylights, the new Andersen casement windows welcome in light and backyard views. The 54-inch, workstation sink by Kohler features an InSinkErator Batch feed disposal and two Kohler faucets; the easy-to-clean, handmade Zellige glazed, clay-tile backsplash is as practical as it is attractive, while the honey-brass pulls from Top Knobs add sophisticated luster.
“It’s a workhorse of a kitchen, but very elegant in its design,” Daniela says. “We didn’t change the room’s footprint at all; the slanted ceilings and skylights were already there, but the upgraded design, additional windows and calming paint colors all help to create the appearance of a more open, brighter space with tons of natural light. You feel serene and one with nature in the room.”
This page: The beverage station— boasting lighted glass cabinets, a built-in Wolf coffee system and a Summit wine cooler, an icemaker and refrigerator/freezer drawers—gets tons of use. Opposite: The Sub-Zero, French-door refrigerator is covered in cabinetry-matching paneling for a fully integrated effect.
The foyer makes your home’s first impression. Here, five Bergen design experts help you make sure it’s a great one.
OUR EXPERTS:
Everyone who’s ever been on a job interview or a blind date knows the importance of a first impression. Before you even open your mouth, you convey a novel’s worth of information—the way you’re dressed, the smile, the eye contact, that all-important first handshake. Your home’s closest equivalent is its entryway. It’s the first thing people see when they come in the front door. It should draw them in like a welcoming smile, well-pressed clothes or a firm, confident handshake. So how do you design a foyer that will say what you want it to say? Five Bergen design experts offer tips:
When finding fitting furniture for a foyer (try saying that five times fast), start with function. Says Melissa Selvaggio: “First, assess the functionality required, then choose pieces that address those needs. In most cases, that includes a sideboard with storage or a console table for holding essentials. A bench or a chair provides a convenient spot to sit while putting on or taking off shoes.”
Adds Christie Adams: “When space is limited, a bench is a great alternative and offers guests a convenient place to remove their shoes.” The shapes you pick are also important, says Alexandra Schuetz, who suggests choosing “a round console table if possible, to allow for soft edges. It makes the space feel soft and inviting.” Remember, says Selvaggio, that “when you balance function with aesthetics, an entryway becomes both a welcoming and a practical space.”
Eye-catching moldings, paneling, trim and baseboards can help you get the most out of an entryway. Shoshana Halpert says it’s a great way to set the stage for the rest of the house. “A foyer can really set the tone with millwork, then you can it take up the stairs,” she explains. “Not only does it add elegance, it also gives you an opportunity to tie in and unite millwork from other rooms.” Tara Rotelli concurs. “The millwork in your foyer should consider the millwork profiles throughout your entire home,” she says. “If you can design your foyer at the same time as the rest of the space, work to blend all of your millwork profiles in terms of scale, proportion and time period. If you don’t, something may feel ‘off’ about the home.” Still, you need not limit yourself. Rotelli goes on: “Juxtaposition and mixing clean lines with ornate patterns, however, can result in a magical design concept! Feel free to play, mix and match. As long as there is a level of consistency throughout the home, you are golden.” More than anything, Selvaggio says, millwork adds “texture and a sense of warmth,” and it can make even a very large space feel more inviting. A hint from our pros: The space can be designed to include hooks for hanging jackets and other essentials.
You walk home on a dark night, enter through your front door and hit a light switch—what greets you? All our experts agree that a pendant or ceiling-mounted fixture is a must in this room. The height of your ceilings will determine which you should go for. Adams says: “If you have 8-foot ceilings, then a flush mount light is the way to go. However, when you have tall ceilings, then go big or go home!” And going big can have amazing payoff indeed, as pendant lights are often called the “fine jewelry” of the home design world and adding one can have head-turning results. Says Selvaggio: “In larger entryways, I love selecting a statement light fixture—such as a chandelier or a bold pendant—to anchor the space and create a focal point. This not only enhances the architectural details, but also ensures that the entryway feels well-proportioned and inviting.” If additional lighting is needed, add a lamp to that console table, or look to the walls. As Schuetz says, “Placing wall sconces up the stairs creates warm, ambient lighting.”
The one essential piece of wall décor in an entryway? “Every entry needs a mirror,” says Halpert, “so you can do one last check before you leave the house.” That’s a unifying statement—most of our experts sing the praises of adding a mirror to an entryway. Selvaggio says it’s “both decorative and functional, adding light and depth to the space.” Schuetz loves the way it “reflects natural light in addition to making the space feel more open.” As for other ways to adorn your foyer, Adams reminds you that “it’s all about scale. When there is a big wall to fill, the art needs to be the appropriate size. If it’s going above a console table, then it needs to be at least half as wide as the table. Don’t be afraid of going too big when you have the space.” Because the entryway is your home’s first impression, this is a great place to give a sneak peek at the personalities of the people living in it. Selvaggio says, “We work closely with clients to understand what resonates most—whether it’s family photos, which we might display in oversized frames as a gallery wall, or artwork that reflects their style and interests.” It can also whet the appetite for the home design to come, as Halpert says: “It should hint at the color palette to come in the rest of the house.”
Ideally, says Rotelli, what’s underneath your feet in a foyer should start at the building stage. “When it comes to flooring, practicality is key, and natural stone remains my top choice,” she says. “Some view it as fragile or high-maintenance, but I remind them that natural stone is as timeless as the earth itself. It can be easily cleaned and restored should any stains or issues arise.” If you’re not designing from the bones up, then a good rug is the best way to control the floor in this room. According to Halpert, “A rug adds texture to your entryway. In a room that likely has no soft textures, it’s a way to add color and warmth to the space.” Selvaggio says a rug is “essential” for both style and practicality. “I prioritize durable materials that can withstand daily wear,” she says. “Authentic Turkish or Persian rugs are excellent choices, as they are not only resilient but also bring timeless character to a space. Consider colors and textures that complement the home’s overall palette and the design. Patterns are particularly useful, as they help conceal dirt and stains while adding visual interest.” Adds Adams: “Since a rug is easier to replace than a runner, I generally recommend a more timeless pattern for the runner and a bolder pattern for the entryway rug.”
If you’re
past your 65th birthday,
you’re on a journey. Here’s a road map for making it a success.
For years, Lisa Lovermi and her husband, Chris, had planned to retire to Florida. Then the pandemic arrived, reminding us all that life is fragile and convincing the Fair Lawn couple that proximity to family—both of their adult children live in Bergen County—was more valuable than the promise of a snowless winter. “All of a sudden, you realize how important that closeness to your family is,” says Lovermi, 66, who now plans to stay in Bergen. “We just feel safer and more confident living near our children.”
Nearby family is only one factor among many keeping residents here as they age. (According to the National Institutes of Health, Bergen has the state’s greatest number of residents 65 and older, and that population is rapidly growing: In 2010 some 15 percent of all Bergenites were 65 or older, versus 19 percent today.)
Bergen is “a great place to age because there’s a lot to offer here, including cultural opportunities, restaurants, convenient transportation options, an excellent system of parks and access to some of the best medical care in the country,” says Jared Lautz, deputy chief of staff to County Executive Jim Tedesco and Bergen’s former acting director of human services. Our walkable downtowns and population density are conducive to the promotion of community, critical for successful aging. And seniors can avail themselves of an array of services, information and advice from municipalities, private organizations and the Division of Senior Services.
BY LESLIE GARISTO PFAFF
That means that the county is also a great place to plan for successful aging—and planning is critical. Research published in 2022 in the journal Geriatric Nursing concluded that “proactive planning for aging is a priority of the World Health Organization and can promote a healthy aging process.”
“Successful aging,” notes Terri Katz, M.D., an internal and geriatric medicine specialist at Englewood Health, “looks different for everyone. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s about maintaining quality of life, maximizing independence, managing pain and keeping loved ones involved. And achieving this often requires creativity and setting both short- and long-term goals.”
With that in mind, we’ve asked experts in four key areas for their advice on planning for and navigating the process of aging well.
“Will I outlive my money?” That’s the most common question older clients (and many younger ones as well) ask of Roger Moss, a financial advisor who works with many Bergenites at his Montville-based firm. “I always say, ‘You’re not going to outlive your money; you’re just going to cut your expenses,’” he says. Of course, neither outcome is ideal, so planning for retirement and/or whatever exigencies aging may bring is essential.
If you have a retirement account, such as an IRA or 401K, you’ll need to start rebalancing it for retirement,
trading out higher-risk investments for those that are more conservative, about five years before you plan to retire. You can start the process, Moss advises, by estimating how much money you’re going to need each month when you’re no longer working. Next, determine your monthly income from Social Security and, if you’re lucky enough to have one, a pension. If that total is less than your monthly expenses, your retirement account should be fine-tuned to make up for the shortfall. A good financial advisor can help you do all this.
To get the most out of those Social Security benefits, you’ll need to start thinking about them before you’re eligible to collect—currently, the minimum age is 62, so you’d be wise to start your research around the time you turn 60. You’ll need to decide whether it would be more advantageous to start receiving benefits sometime before your so-called full retirement age—the age at which you qualify for maximum benefits—or wait to receive that maximum amount. You can find your full retirement age, determined by your birth year, along with an estimation of your benefits at ssa.gov/prepare/ plan-retirement. Social Security’s online checklist (ssa. gov/pubs/EN-05-10377.pdf) can help you decide when to file, as can a financial advisor or a call to the Senior Helpline, 201.336.7400, run by Bergen County’s Division of Senior Services. The helpline can also give you information about applying for Medicare, which you’ll likely want to do during your so-called initial enrollment
period, beginning three months before you turn 65 and ending three months after.
Homes in Bergen are expensive, no matter your age or financial status, which makes housing a serious concern for anyone planning to spend retirement years here. Recent surveys indicate that between 75 and 90 percent of us hope to stay in our current homes as we get older—a process known as aging in place—though many aren’t sure that will be possible. Potential impediments include high housing costs, health problems and difficulties getting around outside the home.
The county’s Senior Helpline can connect older residents with services that can help them age in place. And for those who can’t, or would prefer not to, stay in their current homes, there are several other options:
—Moving in with family (or friends). Not only can it save you money (which you can then spend on in-home assistance if it’s needed), but it can also provide you with a built-in support system.
—Moving to a 55-and-over community. You may associate them with Florida or the Southwest, but Bergen has a number of these seniors-only areas. They offer a variety of amenities (such as gyms, pools and maintenance-free living) and activities (clubs, for instance, for aficionados of pickleball, travel, mahjong, etc.) and a presumably congenial population of fellow seniors—people who can hear the song title “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and not necessarily think of Fergie. These communities’ most sought-after feature, according to Alica Snider, a Bergen Realtor who specializes in 55-and-over living, is a primary bedroom on the first floor, something hard to find in conventional homes in Bergen. Be aware, says Snider, that 55-and-overs tend to be expensive here, and these homes don’t come onto the market all that often, so you’d do well to consider such a move a year or more before you’re ready to make it.
—Moving to a lifecare community. Lifecare communities, also known as continuing care retirement communities, or CCRCs, offer a continuum of care, from independent living through 24-hour skilled nursing care. “No matter what somebody needs throughout their life regarding care, we’re able to provide it,” explains Steve Dumke, CEO of the nonprofit Christian Health, which runs a lifecare community, Longview, in Wyckoff. “You start out in the independent living setting,” he explains, “and then if you need rehab or home healthcare or assisted living, we provide it.” It’s an attractive option for seniors in relatively good health who anticipate a growing need for care; if you or your spouse, for instance, has a chronic condition like Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis, a CCRC offers you the reassurance that you’ll always have access to the level of health care you need.
When shopping around for a community, find out exactly what kind of care will be available, as well as what amenities and activities are offered. Dumke recommends visiting a place at least twice, at different times of day, to get a real feel for it. And make sure you understand what you’re paying for. Payment schedules, which may include entrance and monthly fees (the latter rising as additional care is provided), can vary widely. You’ll also want to check the community’s financial viability. To help you evaluate a CCRC, the State of New Jersey offers an online guide at nj.gov/dca/codes/ publications/pdf_ccrc/ccrc2011.pdf.
If your housing plans include selling your present home, give yourself plenty of time to get ready for the sale and subsequent move. “If you’re thinking you want to do this in the next couple of years, you need to start cleaning out your house now,” says Snider. She also recommends enlisting the help of a real estate professional to advise you on updates that may (just possibly) translate into a faster and more profitable sale.
A sense of life satisfaction is essential to overall health and to successful aging, and nothing contributes to well-being in our later years like a supportive community. “Social and mental engagement are incredibly important,” says Dr. Katz, though the activities that tie us to community can vary widely, from a round of golf with friends to weekly dinners with family. Isolation can sneak up on us as we age: We may lose friends or family members; our own retirement can sever office connections; old friends may retire and move away. “As your life situation changes, you can become more isolated and lonely, and that can be a contributing factor to depression,” says Vicki Sherman, a licensed clinical social worker and the president of Generations Counseling & Care Management, which specializes in senior therapy.
To protect against isolation, consider getting involved, before retirement, in an activity that intrigues you. Vicki Lee of Edgewater, for instance, loved to cook, and a class in baking inspired her to enroll in a sourdough workshop. After retirement, she pursued her newfound passion through a series of breadmaking classes, where, she says, “I formed lasting friendships based on a shared love of flour and yeast.”
Bergen County offers older residents ample opportunities to get out and connect with others. There are 50 senior activity centers, some hosted by local municipalities and 10 run by the county’s Division of Senior Services. “They provide vital socialization, food in the form of hot lunches, and activities like singing, line dancing, drum circles, ESL and Zumba,” says Lautz of the county government. Other senior perks include discounts on golf and tennis at county parks, a tuition waiver program for learners 65 and older at Bergen Community College and up to 60 percent off tickets
at participating AMC Theatres through the county’s Golden Key card.
Keeping active and connected helps to fend off depression, something that nearly three in 10 seniors will experience, according to the National Institutes of Health. Precipitating factors, says Sherman, can include “a loss of purpose, fear of financial insecurity and losses of spouses, friends and family members.” The antidote, she adds, is to regain that sense of purpose through activities that are meaningful to you, but “if depression is still a struggle, then it’s important to see a professional therapist or enroll in a support group with others who are going through the same things.”
When it comes to aging in good health, preparation and maintenance look remarkably similar. “Staying active is key,” says Dr. Katz. “Ideally, 150 minutes of exercise per week, mixing cardio for heart health, weight-bearing exercises for bone strength and balance training. If physical therapy is beneficial, I encourage patients to continue long term.” Medical challenges increase as we age, which means finding a family doctor you trust is critical. And if doctor visits start to feel overwhelming, says Dr. Katz, “having a family member present can ensure clear communication, follow-through on recommendations and an accurate medication list, making care more effective.”
As we get older, two health concerns loom particularly large: falling and dementia. In fact, falling, which can lead to injury, disability and in some cases death, is the No. 1 worry among adults in their 80s and of great concern to those in their 70s and even younger. Balance is the key to preventing falls, and a 2022 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that good balance was associated with longer life. You can test your balance by seeing how long you can stand on one leg, an activity that involves multiple body systems. If you’re 69 or younger, you should be able to hold the position for at least 30 seconds, in your 70s, for at least 20 seconds, and for at least 10 seconds in your 80s. You can improve balance at any age: Ask your doctor for some simple balance-honing exercises, one of which is, not surprisingly, standing on one leg.
As for dementia, a 2025 study funded by the National Institutes of Health puts the odds of developing Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias after the age of 55 at 42 percent. Though there’s no sure way to prevent dementia, research indicates that we can help preserve cognitive abilities by protecting our physical health overall through nutrition and physical activity, maintaining healthy blood pressure, taking care of our mental health and engaging in activities such as photography or quilting that stimulate us and encourage learning.
“At the end of the day,” says Dr. Katz, “aging well is about balance, staying active, engaged and connected in ways that feel natural and fulfilling.”
Across the nation, fields of flowers welcome spring in all its majesty.
If a single flower is a miracle of nature, what is a field with thousands of them? Different people would venture different answers, but surely a moodbrightener would be among them. A restorer of spirits, a kick-start to the emotional imagination, an uplift, a rush of visual joy. Whatever flowers mean to you, there are places to visit them in stunning profusion, and while we can’t promise they’ll redeem your every woe, neither can we guarantee that after glimpsing their beauty you’ll ever be quite the same.
Will a planned trip take you near one of the five floral wonderlands described below? If so, remember that these attractions are at the mercy of Mother Nature—be sure you check websites and weather before heading out.
Flower: Tulips. Season: April–May. This New Jersey farm transforms annually into a bright, joyful attraction that brings the beauty of the Netherlands’s tulip fields to your fingertips. More than eight million flowers bloom in dozens of beautiful colors (the farm boasts 100+ tulip varieties), blanketing the ground as far as the eye can see. Photo-ops abound here, as floral-themed props and sculptures ranging from bicycles to princess carriages pepper the farm. (This is a very popular spot for an engagement or maternity shoot.) On weekends, Holland Ridge welcomes a farmers’ and makers’ market, with artisan goods from local vendors and Dog & Ram Spirits to serve floral cocktails and mocktails. Gourmet food trucks are on site every day (as is the farm’s bakery). You can take these beautiful flowers home too—pay a dollar a stem on weekends, 50 cents a stem on weekdays.
Beyond the blossoms. Charmingly rural with rolling hills, Cream Ridge offers much to love and discover. As the weather warms up, more events start rolling into the nearby Cream Ridge Winery, which has been in operation for 37 years and makes truly special local vintages. Stop by for vineyard tours and wine tastings. More of a sportsman? Check out either of the two 18-hole golf courses in the area, Gambler Ridge Golf Course and Cream Ridge Golf Course, both picturesque with on-site restaurants. More info: hollandridgefarms.com
Flower: Cherry blossoms. Season: mid-April. You needn’t drive down to our nation’s capital to see some of the most stunning cherry blossoms the country has to offer. This Essex County park has the largest, most varied collection of Japanese cherry-blossom trees in the United States, with 5,300 trees in 18 varieties. That means that springtime in the park is a magic fairyland of pink petals, perfect for a short stroll, a photo session or a family day trip. The county also goes all-in on celebrating the flowers. Bike rides and races lead up to a full family day April 12, with paddle boats, crafts, face painting and lots of food, and the annual Bloomfest on April 13, which includes Japanese cultural demonstrations, live music, a crafters’ marketplace and activities throughout the day.
Beyond the blossoms. If you’ve never visited The Newark Museum of Art, you’re missing out. Ongoing exhibits include “Jewelry: From Pearls to Platinum to Plastic,” featuring one of the country’s most comprehensive historic jewelry holdings, and the Ballantine House, an 1885 mansion that spotlights Newark’s legacy of skilled craftsmen in addition to historical furniture and architecture. If you want to close your day of flowers with a show, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center features classical music, comedians and dance companies throughout the month. Or, if the cherry blossoms have you craving even more flowers, local favorite spot Fern & Fossil offers terrarium-building workshops and plantand-sips every week.

Flower: Tulips. Season: April–May. This facility has been family-run for five generations, and that family impressively welcomes springtime with more 50,000 tulips available for browsing, picking and photo ops. (Both professional and amateur photographers are welcome.) Tulips are the main draw, but not the only one—check out the farm’s 25,000 daffodils as well and create a beautiful bouquet to take home. Family-friendly activities include a giant sandpit with toy trucks and buckets, a large petting zoo, a kids-sized playhouse filled with places to climb and a pedalpowered tricycle course. Stop by on May 3 or 4 for a “baby animal” weekend and get up close and personal with baby goats, lambs, calves and chicks. End the day with a treat from the farm’s concession stand—how could you say no to fudge, kettle corn or cinnamon-sugar donuts? Beyond the blossoms. Tunkhannock is filled with antiques shops to browse and enjoy, and cozy bistros and coffee shops where you can drop in for a bite once you’re done. The Art-Deco Dietrich Theater is a great place to catch a new release or a vintage movie—or you can stop by any number of cultural and arts events. (Keep an eye out for music, open mics and special speakers.) This is also the heart of the Pocono Mountains, the perfect place for a day hike. Vosburg Neck State Park’s breathtaking views come alive in spring.

Flower: Daffodils. Season: March to midApril. Here’s one of the Peach State’s must-see springtime attractions. More than 20 million daffodil flowers in over 100 varieties bloom across 50 acres of rolling hillsides and valley. Gibbs Gardens plants bulbs with intention, carefully crafting 10-foot-wide streams of color that guide you through the garden, which is large enough that you need four hours to experience it in full. (It’s also threaded through with calming springs and streams for the soothing sounds of natural water.). Staged photography is prohibited here, so save the engagement shoots for elsewhere, but snapping landscape shots and quick family photos is welcome. If you need a bite to eat after all that walking, the on-grounds Arbor Café offers snacks, salads, sandwiches (including barbecued pulled pork) and drinks. Beyond the blossoms. Foodies, rejoice—there’s a lot to love within arm’s reach of this garden. Craft brewery Rocksolid Brewing Co., also in Ball Ground, has innovative sips in addition to comedy shows and live music. (Try the Bees Knees honey blonde ale, which uses English honey malt rather than actual honey for a stronger flavor.) For a sit-down meal, head to Lora Mae’s, a self-proclaimed “boutique café” that sells itself as much on its charm as on its great food (including a filet medallion served over truffle bread pudding).

Flower: Giant Tecolote Ranunculus. Season: Early March to early May. The farthest of our five flower destinations is also one of the country’s largest. This attraction is the result of nearly 85 years of floral cultivation, and those years have paid off. Every spring, all 55 acres of this ranch paint the rolling hills of northern San Diego County with a spectacular display of color and beauty. The blooming is a two-month-long local event and celebration, and the ranch treats it as such. Weekly live music, flower yoga and family yoga, floral workshops, wine tastings and themed dinners await you during your visit. (You can even make your own flower crown with the blooms.)
This year you can also see the new Glass in Flight exhibit, a sculpture exhibit by celebrated artist Alex Heveri. See more than three dozen sculptures of birds and insects, crafted from Dalle de verre glass and steel.
Beyond the blossoms. It’s rarely a bad time to visit sunny Southern California, but spring there is a knockout. For more outdoor wonders, check out the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, where you can boat, “wakeboard,” sail and fish surrounded by truly beautiful landscape, and then check out the discovery campus for a “touch tank,” live animal ambassadors and hands-on activities. For the kids, Legoland California’s rides and attractions are sure to please, including the popular Driving School, where they can build and drive their own mini-cars.

Let’s toast the roast and celebrate in true style.
Yields 4 servings
INGREDIENTS
n 2 1.3-lbs. racks of lamb, frenched
Marinade:
n 4 garlic cloves, minced
n 1 Tbs. fresh rosemary, finely chopped
n 4 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil
n 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
n 1/4 tsp. black pepper
Cooking:
n 2 Tbs. olive oil, for searing
Basting finish:
n 2 Tbs. butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
n 2 garlic cloves, smashed n 1 sprig rosemary
DIRECTIONS
Mix marinade ingredients in a resealable plastic bag. Place lamb in bag, massage to coat, then seal and marinate in refrigerator for at least 24 hours (up to 48 hours). Remove lamb from fridge 1 hour prior to cooking, to ensure even cooking.
Wrap each bone with a small piece of foil. This keeps the bones white. Preheat oven to 390°F.
Heat 1 Tbs. oil in a cast iron skillet (or other oven-proof, heavy-based skillet) over high heat. Sear one lamb rack on all sides until golden brown, including the ends. Remove and repeat with other lamb rack.
Place both racks in the skillet and roast for 15 minutes, or until the internal temperature is 135°F (for medium-rare). Remove pan from oven.
Add butter, smashed garlic and rosemary to pan. The residual heat of the pan will melt the butter. Spoon the butter over the lamb continuously for 30 seconds.
Remove lamb from skillet and place on a rack set over a tray. Pour butter remaining in the skillet over lamb. Cover loosely with foil and rest for 5 minutes.
Cut lamb into individual cutlets or several cutlets per slice.
“Rosemary not only enhances the flavor of the lamb, it’s also high in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. For added benefits, reduce the amount of butter on top, or replace it with a more nutritious oil such as olive or avocado, which provide healthier fats and less saturated fat. Avocado oil is excellent for cooking, especially for searing the lamb, because of its high smoke point. ”

Yields 4 servings
INGREDIENTS
n 1 8-bone center cut rack of pork ribs, frenched
n 1 tsp. seasoned salt
n ½ tsp. black pepper
n 1 cup Italian salad dressing
n 3 cloves of garlic, finely minced
n 1½ Tbs. finely minced fresh rosemary
n ½ Tbs. finely minced fresh thyme
n 4 large carrots, peeled, halved widthwise
n 12 Brussels sprouts, halved
n 16 baby potatoes (ping pong ball sized), pierced with fork
n 1 red onion, cut into eighths
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 375°F. Sprinkle seasoned salt and pepper over rack of pork ribs and rub it in. In a large bowl, combine the Italian dressing, garlic, rosemary and thyme; stir well.
Reserve 1/3 cup marinade. To the large bowl, add the rack of pork ribs and toss to coat.
Place pork rack of ribs on a greased sheet pan. Add cut vegetables to the remaining marinade and toss to coat. Arrange marinade coated vegetables around the rack of pork ribs.
Cover tips of rib bones with foil and bake at 375°F for 75 to 90 minutes or until the pork registers 140°F with an instant-read thermometer.
“To reduce sodium and add a fresh flavor, swap the Italian salad dressing for a homemade marinade of olive oil, lemon, pepper and fresh herbs. Use the remaining marinade to coat the potatoes, infusing them with the same herbaceous flavor.”

Both citrusy sweet and sour, this refreshing cocktail is the perfect sip for spring’s warmer days.
Makes: 2 servings
INGREDIENTS
n 3 oz. gin
n 1 oz. fresh lemon juice
n 11/2 Tbs. agave nectar
n 6 oz. ruby red grapefruit juice
n edible flowers for garnish, optional
DIRECTIONS
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the gin, lemon juice, agave nectar and grapefruit juice, shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Pour into a coupe or martini glass. Garnish with edible flowers (optional).
“To give this drink a refreshing twist and a more distinct flavor, try using white grapefruit juice instead of ruby red and then add a splash of your favorite ginger liqueur.”

BERGEN COUNTY IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST SEASONED AND TALENTED REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS IN THE COUNTRY. To help readers find the best agents to work with, Bergen magazine contracted DataJoe Research of Boulder, Colorado to facilitate a multi-faceted research campaign. It consisted of an online survey delivered directly to agents across Bergen County via email as well as internet research. In the survey, real estate agents were asked to provide sales volume ranges and also nominate their peers. In the Internet campaign, DataJoe consulted a variety of websites to build richer knowledge of individual licensed real estate agents across the county.
DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at the time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If they were not able to find evidence of a real estate agent’s current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that real estate agent was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied results to Bergen magazine for final review.
We recognize that there are many good real estate agents who are not shown on the representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the county.

Coming from a third-generation family in the building and real estate development business, Stephen is deeply familiar with the industry. What was completely unfamiliar to him, however, was relocating to New Jersey and forging his own path.
After business school where he majored in business management with a concentration in statistics, Stephen joined a venture capital firm working with start-ups. Real estate always remained his priority and when a project brought him to New Jersey, he made the decision to fully embrace his calling. With no connections in the state, his choice wasn’t an easy one, but Stephen’s drive to achieve success in the real estate profession never wavered.
Stephen eventually joined Christie’s and, in 2010, formed his own team with just one member. Today, his team of 20 follows a unique approach, conducting customized fact-finding sessions that delve into specific client goals to craft tailored strategies that continually exceed client expectations. Specializing in luxury residential and investment properties in Bergen County and the suburbs of New York City, Stephen's savvy buyers, sellers and investors value his strong business background and highly analytical, data-driven approach. Stephen recognizes that life and client relationships are inherently connected, and his natural ability to read people enables him to build authentic, lasting connections and enduring friendships.
By investing time and financial resources into each team member and providing them with leads and appointments, the Braconi Team continues to grow and succeed. When looking to add a new member, kindness is at the top of the list. After all, he can teach anyone the tricks of the trade, but compassion has to come from within. Recognized for his charity work and the power of giving, Stephen is the recipient of the Franklin Lakes Mayor's Volunteer Award. He volunteers at the Bergen County SPCA making a direct impact on the lives of animals. A BJJ Black Belt and a Pan American Games gold medal champion, Stephen dedicates time to teaching kids the art of self defense helping them build confidence and self esteem.

The town’s new soup shop, Ramen Factory, doesn’t do everything. But it does right by ramen.
Slurping soup is officially illegal in New Jersey, according to some websites, while others debunk the claim. Either way, I’m a proud “slurper,” and I’m not changing.
Unafraid to be loud and messy, I planned a lunch date at Ramen Factory, a new noodle shop that opened earlier this year in an Old Tappan strip mall. Though its website suggests that the restaurant specializes in “Japanese fusion,” the menu is limited to ramen bowls (hence its name), rice bowls and a handful of bite-sized side dishes. If you’re looking for sushi, shrimp tempura, chicken teriyaki or the like, you’d best look elsewhere. Here it’s oldfashioned bowls of noodles or rice.
The interior décor suggests that as well, as images of mouthwatering bowls of soup are plastered on the wall alongside playful framed caricatures of felines feasting on noodles. As my girlfriend and I admired the decorations, our server offered us two steaming cups of oolong tea and an explanation of the different soups.
To start, we selected two dishes from the “sides” menu. There were only five choices, which for us was a positive, as it cut down time debating and bickering. (I always crave meat, while she seeks out veggies.) For this meal, we each ordered one pork bao bun, and we shared a plate of gyoza (Japanese dumplings). It had been a while since I last had a good bao bun—a staple on Chinese menus—so I was excited to bite into the pillowy, soft dough. Inside the sweet, steamed buns was a truly wonderful filling: roasted pork belly, crunchy cucumber, lettuce and a house sauce that had hints of hoisin, soy sauce and other spices. I honestly could have eaten four or five more of the buns, and my girlfriend, the occasional meat eater, said she could’ve eaten more as well. But we didn’t want to feel prematurely full.
The plate of gyoza came with six pan-fried dumplings, which I admit were not visually arresting—they looked like any run-of-themill potstickers. The flavor of each dumpling and its piping-hot filling, however, more than made up for the shortfall in aesthetics. My only beef with the pork-and-vegetable-
filled gyoza was that it’s only available fried; no steamed option is offered.
Though we fully concentrated while eating our apps—we did our best to keep all the filling in the bao buns, and my girlfriend tried her darnedest to eat with the wooden chopsticks— our main courses were all about fun. From the list of five noodle options, I selected the popular shoyu ramen. It’s a tall bowl filled with tonkotsu soup (chicken and pork broth) that’s flavored with soy sauce and contains tender roasted pork, marinated boiled egg, woodear mushrooms, bamboo shoots, scallions, salted ginger and seaweed. Although it contained fewer ingredients than other ramen bowls I’ve had in the past, Ramen Factory’s version was quite desirable. The broth wasn’t as salty as others but still had plenty of flavor, and the ginger added a twist that I found pleasant. The noodles were perfectly cooked too, and my abundance of slurping and soup-splattering could—in a certain version of things—have gotten me arrested.
My girlfriend, meanwhile, passed on the soup and opted for the Chashu don rice bowl. Her dish was essentially filled with the same ingredients as my bowl sans broth, but the starch base was white rice instead of ramen noodles. Also similar was the great taste—the ingredients meshed harmoniously for a savory and sweet bite, with the ginger providing an extra zing. Consuming carbs in the bao buns, gyoza and rice, my girlfriend could only finish three-quarters of her bowl, which put a smile on my still-hungry face. I dutifully ensured that the food didn’t go to waste, and I had no regrets.
Ramen Factory does everything to check off the boxes for those craving ramen, though at press deadline it did not offer desserts or any after-meal sweets. Another final tea refill and a recommendation to try the strawberry cheesecake milk tea at Gong Cha next door capped our visit. I would stop to see if they add to their offerings—that is, if I find myself in the Northern Valley with a hankering for noodles.
