Celebrating Old And New

Will you all please raise your hands if plaid donuts are part of your family’s annual holiday festivities?

I didn’t think so. Mine neither.

You’ll learn how to create this fashion-forward taste treat in “Festive Flair,” starting on page 38, in which we showcase holiday ideas (edible, visual or, like the donuts, both) from entertainment guru Stephanie Nass. But I’m making a larger point.

Holiday rituals are wonderful, and it can be pleasing to do things the same way each year. But sometimes, when something new comes along, it’s good to be open to it. It may actually add to the fun.

One family I know listened for decades to the same favorite Christmas albums. Then someone shared a recording of Louis Prima’s 1936 tune “What Will Santa Claus Say? (When He Finds Everybody Swingin’)” and its infectious jazz rhythms earwormed their way into the family’s holiday observances, there to remain. Moral: There’s always room for something new (even when that something is, like Prima’s, something old).

As this issue shows, we at BERGEN equally celebrate both what you do every holiday season and what you may do for the first time this year. On page 13, five Bergenites tell what best symbolizes the holiday season for them. (Check out the last sentence of Erin Taddei’s response—I love it.) Perhaps you’ll take in the menorahs that illuminate Hanukkah’s Festival of Lights (page 14). Or, if you’re ready to hop in the car for a drive, enjoy dazzling displays of holiday lights in nearby states (page 64). In our Gift Guide, beginning on page 55, you may find a novel present that’s perfect for a relative who previously had you stumped.

The holiday season concludes with New Year’s, of course. Talk about something new that’s also traditional! On page 18, we BERGEN editors share the New Year’s resolutions we’ve been foolish enough to admit to making for 2025.

What else will you find in this December issue? Just in time for year-end giving, a Special Report (page 44) on charities—including info on a few top organizations you can count on to make your donated dollar go far. A health article on problems of the gut (page 30)—an awkward topic, maybe, but a timely one if you’re ever guilty of holiday-party overindulgence. The story of a kitchen redo (page 32) that, with professional teamwork, turned out better than it would have in any one planner’s hands alone. A lookback by our restaurant reviewer on four memorable dishes of his 2024 (page 78). And much more!

I can’t wait to see what we’ll be enjoying next holiday season. A red bagel in the shape of Bergen County, perhaps? An AI-enabled greeting card that adjusts its message according to the recipient’s mood? Or maybe just a turkey with all the trimmings, one that tastes just like Grandma’s did.

Here’s wishing you a joyful Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Year’s!

PRESENTS FOR PUPS

The holidays are here, and who deserves something special more than your furry family member? But what else to do other than buy them a new squeaky toy? Try these ideas: Pamper your pup. Treat Fido to a “spa” day at places like Fur the Love of Pets in Oradell or The Pet Lodge and Spa in River Vale.

Make a run for it. Take your good boy or girl for a long day at an area dog park. The facilities at Ridgewood’s Wild Duck Pond and Overpeck County Park, for instance, are, well, for the dogs—in a good way! Tricks then treats. When your pooch masters commands like “sit” and “stay,” reward them with a specially made snack from a local shop like Woof Gang Bakery in Glen Rock or Westwood Pets Unlimited. Want more perfect presents for your pet? Turn to our Gift Guide in this issue and visit bergenmag.com/ 5-ways-to-pamper-your-pup-this-fall.

EATS FOR ALL ’Tis the season for good eats, but those with Celiac disease and those who are on glutenfree diets can find this time of year challenging.

In Bergen County, however, there are many restaurants that cater to diners with these dietary restrictions. For example: Alt-Eats Café. This former Readers’ Choice selection offers an impressive spread of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner. *622 N. Maple Ave., Ho-Ho-Kus, 201.444.1300; alteatscafe.com

Simply Green Café. The vegetarian chick’n Caesar wrap is a favorite amongst longtime customers, and this Ramsey café has many gluten-free options and substitutions as well. *25 N. Spruce St., Ramsey, 201.661.8905

True Food Kitchen. This small chain is known for its gluten-free substitution options and wide range of gluten-free selections. *390 Hackensack Ave., Hackensack, 551.295.7401; truefoodkitchen.com

OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTY.

MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS

What really says “the holidays are here” for you and your family? Is it a specific Christmas recipe? Picking out a tree? Lighting the menorah? We asked BERGEN readers to share their favorite holiday traditions:

“Getting hot chocolate and driving around to see all the Christmas decorations. It’s a great way to get into the holiday spirit!”

—Jane Farrell Kirk, River Edge

“I hated taking the Christmas-card photo growing up, but I’ve done it every year with my own family. And now they hate it too!”

—Erin C. Taddei, Ridgewood

“Lasagna! My father-in-law’s recipe from his restaurant. I have made it every Christmas for the past 45 years, and now my children and grandchildren help to carry on the tradition.”

—Elaine Weinman, River Edge

“My family makes ‘doughies’ every Christmas morning. It’s fried pizza dough with butter and granulated sugar on top.”

—Kerry A. Fais-Plattel, Park Ridge

“My parents used to take us to midnight Mass every Christmas Eve. When we’d come home, everyone would open one present and save the rest for the morning. This is something I’ve continued with my own kids— though some years we couldn’t resist and opened all the gifts at one in the morning!”

—Renato Villegas, Hackensack

A DIFFERENT KIND OF MISTLETOE

What’s the best finishing touch to the perfect holiday gathering? The perfect signature cocktail, of course. Along with your favorite wines and spirits, this cocktail, created by mixologist Jed Kessler of Jed’s Party Services in Fair Lawn, is sure to be a hit at any party or get together. Cheers!

MISTLETOE MARTINI

• 3 oz. vodka

• ½ oz. fresh lime juice

• 4 oz. cranberry juice

• rosemary simple syrup In a round ice cube tray, freeze a mixture of cranberry juice and rosemary simple syrup to make small cranberry ice spheres. In a shaker, add ice, vodka, cranberry juice and lime juice. Shake well and strain it into a chilled martini glass. Add the frozen cranberry spheres. Carefully char burn one sprig of rosemary and place it in the glass as a garnish.

THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

Warmth, holiday spirit and the perfect moment of community—you can find all these and more at menorah lightings all over Bergen County this season. Come together with family and friends, listen to great music and take in the lights. Here are four happening in Bergen:

• Borough of River Edge, Borough Hall, Holiday Tree and Menorah Lighting: Dec. 7 at 6 p.m.

• Bergen Town Center, Paramus: Dec. 26 at 6 p.m.

PUPPY LOVE

Dog: Lucky, a 6½-year-old chihuahuaterrier mix

Owner: Dorothy Bozzone of Park Ridge Lucky and Dorothy met on a cold day. When Bruce and Karen Doxey stopped by to visit her, Dorothy asked why they had left their truck running in the driveway. They said it was to keep their dog warm, and Dorothy invited them to bring the pup inside.

• Bergen County Winter Wonderland, Van Saun Park, Paramus: Dec. 28 at 6:30 p.m.

• Borough of Oradell, Borough Hall: Dec. 30 at 6:30 p.m.

Lucky became Dorothy’s friend on the spot. Dorothy began watching him during the day, as both the Doxeys work. Then, after her husband died last September, Lucky became her full-time companion. He stays at her house, though one of the Doxeys comes to walk him in the mornings or when the weather is bad.

When it’s nice out, Lucky and Dorothy enjoy daily walks together. “He encourages me to exercise,” she says. Lucky doesn’t like dog treats, but he loves fresh green beans, cooked broccoli, chicken and whipped cream. Dorothy takes care of grooming and bathing him herself, and likes taking him to local functions such as the Memorial Day Parade, which he attended all dressed up in patriotic colors.

Dorothy calls him “just the right size for her,” at just under 6 pounds. He always tries to protect her when strangers come to the house. Lucky has become an official part of the family, charming everyone with his big, friendly brown eyes and his love of hugs.

Says Dorothy, “I am lucky to have Lucky by my side!”

A SPICY HUE FOR ’25

No one has a real crystal ball, but designers and paint companies make an annual effort to predict design trends with their “color of the year” selections. The folks at Montvale-based Benjamin Moore say the upcoming year will be functional, quiet and filled with warmth and comfort. Their “color of the year” pick, Cinnamon Slate, walks the easy line between heathered plum and velvety brown. It offers an enduring style and a modern sensibility, and it’s right on trend with other “color of the year” picks, which call for warm colors that redefine neutral and put twists on old favorites.

How best to use this hue? Pair it with something even darker to up that old world-smoking room feeling, or use it as an accent color against a bright cream. As a foundational color, Cinnamon Slate brings easy grounding to any design.

YOUR VOTE COUNTS!

The year is about to turn once again. That means it’s time to make sure all your favorite spots in Bergen get their flowers. As 2025 begins, keep an eye on BERGEN’s website and Instagram page. Our annual Readers’ Choice Awards are back, and we can’t wait to hear about all your favorite places around the county, from bakeries to bike shops to clothing boutiques. Show off your local knowledge, clue people in to the best IYKYK spots and support local businesses and cast your vote at bergenmag.com!

PARK FREE!

Bergen’s main streets are a treat this time of year, providing a picturesque backdrop for shopping and dining. Even better, some towns get into the spirit by offering free parking on select days in December. Check with the following towns for meter holidays, effective dates, time limits and other restrictions.

• Cliffside Park, lots and street parking

• Englewood, lots and street parking

• Fort Lee, lots and street parking

• Hasbrouck Heights, street parking

• Palisades Park, street parking

• Ridgewood, lots and street parking

• Westwood, lots and street parking

WHEN IT’S TIME, IT’S TIME

Inspired by her young children, local author Bianca Costa has written and published her first children’s book, Not A Bedtime Story. It seeks to help kids make the transition to bedtime with humor and understanding, playfully addressing nightly rituals parents and kids know well—and all the ways children try to postpone hitting the hay. Costa lives in Ridgewood with her husband, two sons and an Irish doodle. “I absolutely love being part of this vibrant community and all it has to offer,” she says.

Left to Right:

FACES OF THE STRUGGLE

Maybe you’ve seen them while driving by, the images on a mural titled “The Black Women’s Mural: Celebrating Black Suffragists and Black Women in Englewood.”

It’s a community-driven public artwork created on the Women’s Rights Information Center’s (WRIC’s) building on the city’s Palisade Avenue. The mural memorializes local activists who fought for the right of women of color to vote.

Want more? The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation’s (NNJCF) ArtsBergen initiative developed the website “Beyond the Wall” to highlight information about the artist, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, and the history of Black suffragists in Englewood. The website also shows how the mural was made. Browse the site at blackwomensmuralnj.org.

SEASON OF GIVING

Though the holidays are a joyous time for many, they can add stress for people in need. If you want to help your less fortunate neighbors, you can do more than donate your time to a soup kitchen or food to a food pantry (though both are great moves). Wyckoff-based charity Families for Families offers a special “Adopt a Family” program every holiday season.

This program matches a family or individual in need with a sponsor willing to purchase holiday gifts and necessities. To make sure everyone gets what they want, Families for Families meets with each recipient family to understand their personal needs and wishes. Sizes and color and style preferences of wish-list items are provided.

For more information or to sign up for this program, visit families4families.com.

WE HERE HIGHLY RESOLVE…

It’s become a kind of cultural running to make New Year’s resolutions and then have them shrivel up and blow away by February. what members of BERGEN’s staff are hoping, and in that hope we’re right here for all to see:

Rita Guarna, editor in chief:

“COVID derailed my desire to travel abroad, and I hadn’t taken a ‘big’ trip since 2019. But going to Egypt, a bucket-list trip, reminded me that I owe it to myself to embrace what matters most to me.”

Stephen Vitarbo, creative director:

“I’ve been promising myself for a while now to learn a new language, and this year I’m going to do it. I already speak Spanish, though not fluently anymore, so Italian might be the logical choice. Buon Anno!”

Darius Amos, senior associate editor:

“A shoulder injury threw off my fitness routine over the past year, so I want to get back into an active lifestyle and take more advantage of our area’s great hiking trails and immerse myself in nature. North Jersey has a treasure trove of places to explore.”

Kirsten Meehan, assistant editor:

“I am looking forward to getting back into page-a-day journaling. I find that I am always more focused and creative when I keep up that habit, but it fell out of my routine in 2024. I have a new notebook ready to go.”

Parent-Approved for 17 Years: Discover Bergen County’s Beloved Boutique Preschool

With nearly two decades of dedication, this charming preschool has earned rave reviews year after year from parents who trust it for their children’s preschool education. Families consider this boutique academy a hidden gem in Bergen County—a nurturing second home where young learners thrive.

Located on the outskirts of Palisades Park, Learn & Grow Academy has been a trusted cornerstone for early childhood development since it opened 17 years ago. Founded by professional educators Nina Galati and Patty DeLemos, the preschool was born from their shared vision to fill a gap in early education. As state-certified teachers—and parents themselves—they recognized that many preschools weren’t adequately preparing children for the academic and social expectations of kindergarten. Nina and Patty’s dual roles as owners and classroom teachers keep them directly involved in day-to-day operations, allowing them to personally know each child and family and stay engaged in every aspect of the school’s environment. Determined to foster well-rounded growth, they designed Learn & Grow Academy as an empowering, structured, and loving environment to prepare children for grade school readiness.

Serving children from ages 2.5 to 6, Learn & Grow Academy stands out with its uniquely low 4:1 student-to-staff ratio, allowing teachers to get to know each child deeply and help them master key developmental milestones. The one-of-a-kind curriculum, entirely designed by Nina and Patty, has consistently achieved outstanding results based on the success of their graduates.

The academy’s transformative framework has inspired a loyal following, with families traveling from towns as far as Franklin Lakes and Mahwah for its exceptional reputation. Parents describe it as “top-notch,” with children welcomed warmly into a safe, engaging space. The facility is also kept spotless, consistently exceeding state health guidelines.

Learn & Grow Academy boasts a remarkable 5.0 rating on both Google and GreatSchools, reflecting the dedication and care that goes into each child’s schooling. Parents rave about the directors' commitment to maintaining close communication and collaboration, often noting how the staff goes above and beyond to foster the parent-student relationship. Nina and Patty provide parents with personalized support and valuable tips to help them navigate the challenges of parenting during the preschool years and beyond.

Alongside its exceptional curriculum, Learn & Grow Academy emphasizes life skills, teaching students manners, acceptable behavior, and respectful interaction with peers. The directors’ hands-on approach, along with a dedicated staff—many of whom have been with the academy for years—creates a close-knit atmosphere where families feel valued.

For parents interested in visiting this cherished preschool, Learn & Grow Academy offers tours by appointment. With limited classroom spots available each year, interested families are encouraged to reach out early to secure enrollment.

For more information, visit learnandgrowacademy.com or their Facebook page at http://surl.li/npiycw

FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS

Making Dad Proud

He’s a successful executive chef who withstood the heat of Hell’s Kitchen. But for Joe Tartamella of East Rutherford, family remains the focus.

Originally from Staten Island, N.Y., and the son of an Italian immigrant, 36-year-old Joe Tartamella of East Rutherford is the executive chef at Ridgewood’s Felina, a restaurant celebrated for its distinctive take on Italian cuisine. If his name rings another bell, that’s for good reason—he was one of the 18 head chefs who competed on season 23 of Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen, hosted by Gordon Ramsay. But away from the set’s lights and the pressure of the culinary challenges, Tartamella speaks of what truly guided his path: his wife, a nurse practitioner, his two daughters and the legacy and pride he carries from his father.

How did your interest in cooking start?

It all comes from my relationship with my dad. He is a bread baker from Sicily, and he and my mother owned a bakery together when I was growing up. My father was my hero. I would watch while he worked in the bakery, and it was superhuman to me, you know? When I was as young as 10, I’d beg at two o’clock in the morning to go into the bakery with him and help. And, outside of the bakery, we’re a big Italian family. Everything revolved around food. How did you get involved with Hell’s Kitchen?

They reached out to me on Instagram, actually. At first I thought it was a joke. Then, as I looked into it, I realized it was the real thing.

What was the most difficult part about filming? It took place in Connecticut, at Foxwoods Resort Casino. It took between three and four weeks. I think the most difficult part was the uncertainty. You don’t really know what’s going to get thrown at you. You never really prepared for it—doing that while being on film for the first time is nerve-racking. You’re going to be on TV in front of millions of people, and you’re not in control at all.

What was it like being around the other contestants?

To this day, we all still communicate. I made a lot

of good friendships. Two in particular—Brandon Kerr and I developed a pretty tight relationship, and we talk frequently. And Whitney Thomas is actually working with me at the Felina Summit at the Albion.

What about the celebrity chefs?

Obviously, there’s Gordon Ramsay. He’s fantastic, you know, just an amazing human being. Meeting James Avery for the first time was also pretty cool. He’s a New Jersey guy. We made a connection. A favorite memory of being on set?

Lots. While we were in the dorms, there were a lot of inside jokes. It was like being in a fraternity, so I think the camaraderie that I had with the other contestants was my favorite part, plus the

challenges—when you had your wins, it was really gratifying.

What were your family’s reactions?

It was harder on me than it was on them.

I’ve seen and spoken to my daughters every day since they were born, and I couldn’t do that on set. They were excited to see me on TV, but it was difficult for me, not knowing for sure that they were OK.

What about your coworkers in Ridgewood?

I’m a pretty stern boss—you have to be, as an executive chef. But I have a good relationship with everyone, and the joke was, “Oh, the tables have turned now.” They told me, “Don’t flip out on Gordon Ramsay!”

What are you most proud of professionally?

In a lot of ways, what we’ve accomplished with the growth of Felina, expanding locations and gaining acceptance. But also, I think about my father—he came to America poor, he worked hard every day and made a lot of sacrifices for his family. Now I see how highly he talks about me and what I’ve made of myself. Really, I’m proud that I get to make my dad proud.

Your favorite dish to cook?

The chicken scarpariello, from Felina’s menu. It was my signature dish on the show.

Advice for young chefs?

Make sure that you want to do this, because it’s not a normal life. You sacrifice weekends and holidays and eating dinner with family. You need to be passionate about it, and you need to have a connection with food. And remember that it doesn’t happen overnight. It takes years of work and a lot of mistakes.

What’s next for you?

I’m trying to grow my social media presence in addition to my restaurant work. I’ve been trying out short videos on Instagram, so keep an eye on @chefjoetartamella_ for those.

Advice On Gut Health

GASTROINTESTINAL PROBLEMS ARE UNPLEASANT TO DISCUSS AND EVEN MORE UNPLEASANT TO SUFFER. HERE, A BERGEN DOC EXPLAINS THEM.

If your stomach is bloated, burbling or upset, it may be time to grab an antacid or a Pepto—or to see a gastroenterologist, a medical specialist in the digestive system. Wondering when you should opt for the latter instead of the former?

Nneoma Okoronkwo, M.D., a gastroenterologist at HVA Medical Group in Fair Lawn and part of the Englewood Health Physician Network, answers key questions about gastrointestinal (GI) issues.

What should people know about GI health?

“You are what you eat; your diet matters. I recommend consuming a diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins while minimizing processed foods, sugars and excessive fats to promote overall digestive health. High levels of stress can also significantly impact digestive health, so incorporate stress-reducing practices into your lifestyle.”

What lifestyle changes can help in this area? “One of the most important ones is staying well hydrated. Drinking enough water is crucial for digestion and maintaining a healthy gut. A balanced diet is also essential. Using mindful eating practices, such as thoroughly chewing food and listening to your body’s hunger cues, can help. Also avoid any kind of smoking and limit alcohol consumption. Finally, it’s important to be mindful of how certain foods affect your digestion. Keeping a food diary can help identify intolerances and sensitivities for better digestive health management.”

What’s GERD?

“Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, occurs when stomach acids or contents flow back into the esophagus, leading to symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, a sour taste in the mouth, difficulty swallowing and abdominal discomfort. Several factors contribute to GERD, including obesity, pregnancy and smoking, as well the consumption of acidic or spicy foods, fatty meals, coffee or alcohol.

“If left untreated, GERD can result in serious complications, such as esophageal strictures (narrowing of the esophagus), esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus), Barrett’s esophagus (changes in the esophageal lining) and an increased risk of esophageal cancer. Fortunately, most people with GERD can manage their symptoms through lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy weight, steering clear of trigger foods, eating smaller meals, not lying down for at least three hours after eating and elevating the head

of the bed at night. When lifestyle modifications are not enough, overthe-counter treatments like antacids, H2 blockers such as famotidine and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like omeprazole or pantoprazole may be helpful. However, if symptoms persist despite these measures, it’s important to seek care from a gastroenterologist for further evaluation and management.”

What’s the latest in treatments for GI ills? “There have been several advancements. For GERD, if an individual’s systems are resistant to medications and lifestyle changes, minimally invasive endoscopic treatments can help. For ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, there are new and highly effective biologic therapies. These offer patients a wider array of treatment options, allowing for more personalized and targeted care.”

What if embarrassment or anxiety makes someone put off visiting a gastroenterologist? “It is completely normal to feel anxious or embarrassed when discussing GI issues, but keep in mind that gastroenterologists are trained to handle these sensitive issues with care and professionalism. We see cases like yours routinely and are bound by confidentiality. Remember—your health is the priority.”

Is there a specific myth or misconception about a GI problem that you’d like to debunk? “Yes, several. People think you need to ‘detox’ your gut regularly. This is false. The body has inbuilt mechanisms to detoxify itself, primarily through the liver and kidneys. Most people do not need special detox medicines or cleanses. Second, some people believe that heartburn is not a serious medical concern and can be ignored. That’s also false, as heartburn can lead to the more serious complications discussed above. Finally, diarrhea does not always come from food poisoning. Diarrhea has many causes, including infections, stress, antibiotics, medications, malabsorption syndromes, oversecreting syndromes and chronic conditions such as irritable bowel disease (IBD) or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).”

Why should people try to get to the bottom of GI symptoms? “Symptoms like these need to be investigated, as they could be early signs of an underlying gastrointestinal disease. Seek care from your gastroenterologist if these symptoms are not resolved with dietary changes.”

What screening tests can rule out disease? “They vary depending on a person’s family history, genetics and the medications he or she is taking. For individuals with no family history of colon cancer, genetic risk factors or IBD, colon-cancer screenings are typically recommended starting at age 45. The gold standard for screening is a colonoscopy, but for those who are at lower risk—without symptoms or a family or genetic history—noninvasive stool tests may also be an option. It’s important to discuss with your gastroenterologist which screening tests are most appropriate based on your individual risk factors, such as family history, genetics or any underlying health conditions.”

A TEAM COOKS UP A KITCHEN

A Wyckoff couple had many ideas for making their most important room both beautiful and functional. So did a smart designer and other pros.

Design by Anthony Passanante, Anthony Albert Studios

Text by Donna Rolando

With double islands, double ovens and their own

“unique vision” of a design, a Wyckoff family demonstrated their commitment to their kitchen in a very big way. While most of their four-bedroom colonial was treated to a redesign, the kitchen also had the benefit of an addition, giving it a fresh start that at least tripled its size.

“We knew the kitchen was actually going to be the main hub of where everyone’s hanging out, so we needed it to be functional for everyday life and for gatherings,” says Phillip Maresca, who bought the home with his wife Minu based on its good bones and potential.

There would be no cookie-cutter approach for this couple.

Considering the kitchen the heart of their home, a Wyckoff family invested in an expanded space with a design that’s uniquely theirs.

“We wanted something custom to our taste,” Maresca says, but not “different just for the sake of being different.” Diving into social media, the couple came up with a “pretty clear vision.” Yet the question remained: Could reality meet expectations? For help in realizing their dream, they reached out to Anthony Passanante of Waldwick-based Anthony Albert Studios. And they couldn’t be happier with the results.

Sure, the kitchen is minimalist, as was their intent, but it’s also warm. Passanante says that quality owes much to the rift-sawn white oak that infuses the “beauty of the grain” in the cabinets his studio designed. Though simple—almost Scandinavian—in form, the cabinetry makes a statement with matte-black, aluminum-framed glass doors flanking triplecasement windows. It ties in with black frames throughout the home. Says Passanante: “It gives an interesting detail to the cabinets.”

Like the cabinetry, wide-plank rustic flooring pays tribute to the wonder of wood, while the brass hardware and faucets ward off the danger of a stark

and sterile feeling. The faucets from California Faucets are unlacquered with a “living finish” to patinate over time, he explains, while the hardware’s solid brass is made to last forever.

One of the clients’ fave features is the way the Taj Mahal natural quartzite backsplash by Dente Trading, chosen to complement the cabinetry, soars unrestrained to the ceiling for maximum impact. With the luxury of a walk-in pantry and other storage, the designer could forgo upper cabinets to achieve this quartzite wow.

Because the view is king, Passanante took pains to keep it open and airy with globe glass pendants embellished in brass by Tech Lighting—then he got artsy with the globe sconces at the windows by Visual Comfort. The hood above the 48-inch Wolf range with double oven—yes, this family likes to host—is white and simple with an oak band that also reflects on the cabinetry.

Functionality gets a big boost from double islands, one serving for meal

prep with a sink and microwave, the other featuring face-to-face seating to promote chitchat. The client-curated stools with metal frames are intentionally soft in tone. As Maresca explains, “We didn’t want something so loud it would take away from the rest of the kitchen.”

Even when it’s party time, the 7-foot islands don’t stand in the way of kitchen flow, as Passanante observes: “We had the space for them [the islands], so it just really worked out.” Maresca also gives the islands high marks for everyday life, envisioning a future in which the couple’s two young children one day do homework there. “It wasn’t just jamming a second island in there for the sake of doing it,” he says. “The flow of the kitchen around each island still works.”

To balance the elements, Passanante says he made the design “perfectly symmetrical,” which included centering the two islands with the main kitchen sink at the triplicate windows.

With several holidays at the new setting already under their belt, the family can vouch for the success of the layout, which opens the spacious kitchen to the family room for entertainment ease and plants the dining room nearby. The design also treats the hostess to amenities such as two 30-inch, side-by-side (Sub-Zero) fridge-and-freezers visually enhanced by wood paneling.

Though the clients are thrilled with his work on the project, completed in the summer of 2023, Passanante doesn’t take all the credit. “We all worked together on this,” he says, naming Spencer Cosgriff of Ramsey-based Sterling Ridge Contracting and Bob Barnett and Mike Cuittitta of CBH Architects in Summit as collaborators.

The result? “We couldn’t be happier in terms of functionality, the way it looks— everything, down to the fixtures and the lighting,” says Maresca. “They exceeded our expectations.”

Festive Flair

These surprising, elegant touches will make any holiday celebration even more special.

Few gatherings are as sweet as the ones you host for the winter holidays. Whichever festival warms your heart and draws your family close, Stephanie Nass, entertaining expert, entrepreneur and has advice on how to take that celebration to the next level. In her debut book, Swing By! Entertaining Recipes and the New Art of Gathering, Nass offers a spread of festive dishes for you to try, from a classic cream-cheese dip to a delightful and unique vertical salad. Flip through the following pages for some of her tips and recipes—as well as tidbits from Bergen County party planner Christine Figliuolo—that will make your gettogether a memorable one.

ALMOND PINE CONE

Yields 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

n 2 (8-oz.) blocks cream cheese, softened to room temperature

n 6 oz. goat cheese, softened to room temperature

n 1 Tbs. chopped thyme

n 1 tsp. kosher salt

n ½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper

n 2 cups almonds

n 3 sprigs rosemary

n crackers, for serving, such as Triscuit Original or Lesley Stowe’s Raincoast Crisps

DIRECTIONS

Prepare your serving platter. Put the cream cheese, goat cheese, thyme, salt and pepper in the bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment. Beat on medium speed until thoroughly incorporated, about 5 minutes.

On the prepared baking sheet, mold the mixture into an oval shape with one pointy tip, mimicking the shape of an actual pine cone.

Starting at the bottom of the pointy tip, insert the first almond (pointy side out). Work your way around the pine cone from the pointy tip to the rounded side. Make rows of almonds around the entire shaped cheese until the whole mound is covered. Insert rosemary sprigs at the top.

You can serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve, up to 2 days in advance. Serve with sturdy crackers.

My favorite festive touch for a holiday party is always a little sparkle, be that on leaves, artificial fruit or any kind of table or wreath décor. For your tablescape, include garland with battery-operated votive candles tucked in throughout for a cozy glow. For an easy holiday appetizer, go for baked brie with a fruit jam, and a holiday punch always pleases—just combine rainbow sherbert, Sprite, white cranberry juice and fresh cranberries.”

This page: Plaid sets the perfect tone for any holiday get-together—and don’t be afraid to be bold and mix patterns! Opposite page, left: Nass innovatively plates a traditional pear and arugula salad vertically rather than in a bowl for a bite that’s sure to catch eyes and turn heads. Opposite page, right: The saltiness of cheese, the sweetness of cranberry sauce, the warmth of puff pastry—we want seconds already!

VERTICAL SALADS POINSETTIA WREATH

Reimagine your favorite salads in a vertical format. This is a traditional pear and arugula salad with slivered almonds, goat cheese and herbs—arranged within a full pear for a surprising and unique presentation. The pear is cut horizontally into three pieces: The top of the fruit with stem is cut off, then the pear is cored; the bottom part of the pear is cut crosswise into two more pieces and salad ingredients are inserted in between these pieces. The stem piece is placed back on the top. You can also apply this technique to other produce to suit the season: Summer tomatoes can be sliced, filled with mozzarella and basil, and drizzled with balsamic reduction. Autumn apples can be filled with a dressed mix of crushed walnuts, spinach, sliced red onion and feta. Or, in the winter, a roasted acorn squash can be loaded with a lemony rice.

Yields 8 servings

INGREDIENTS

n 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed n 4 Tbs. cranberry sauce, ideally homemade but if using a can, warm it so it’s more easily spreadable n 8 (¼-inch-thick, 1½inch-wide) slices Brie n 1½ Tbs. pistachio nuts, grated n 1 large egg, beaten n chopped fresh herbs, optional for garnish

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

Unroll the puff pastry dough onto the prepared baking sheet. Within the rectangular pastry sheet, carve a circle about 10 inches in diameter and discard the scraps. In the center of the circle, carve a star shape with 8 points. The points should be long and narrow so they can partially cover the filling and touch the opposite side of the circle. Discard the center star.

Spread the cranberry sauce all over the puff pastry circle (but not on the star points), and add slices of Brie where they will be nestled once the star shapes cover them. Sprinkle pistachio over the cranberry sauce and Brie.

Bring the star points outward, over a slice of Brie and the filling, to the outer edge of the puff pastry round. Press together, so that the dough sticks. Continue with all of the star points until a wreath shape is formed.

Brush the exposed puff pastry with beaten egg. Bake the wreath until golden brown and puffy, 15 to 20 minutes.

Garnish with herbs, if desired. Cut it into 8 pieces so that each piece includes a piece of Brie. Serve while still warm.

Whether you make these donuts by hand or source them from your favorite local shop, make sure you dress them up extra special. Nass uses patterned sheets carefully cut to fit each pastry.

DECORATING DOUGHNUTS

To decorate doughnuts with the plaid pattern seen opposite, apply our patterned sheets to a doughnut’s wet glaze. Many doughnut stores will allow you to purchase extra glaze, and you can dip one side of each doughnut into it. For circles that fit your doughnuts, you can trace circles on the patterned sheets, or use a hot metal cookie cutter to cut them to the exact size. A metal cookie cutter can be heated over the flames in a stove; just use a mitt to protect your hands from getting burned. This treat doubles as décor.

Special Report

WHERE CHARITY BEGINS

Three days a week, Charles Rann drives from his home in Mahwah to the Center for Food Action in Saddle Brook, where he does whatever needs doing: filling cartons with food, working the distribution line, preparing items for the nonprofit’s snack packs. Ten years ago, he says, “I had the good fortune to retire early, and I wanted to find an outlet for my time that I would feel good about.” Besides donating his time to CFA, he volunteers with Healing Meals, a program of the nonprofit HealthBarn Foundation in Ridgewood, delivering prepared meals to local residents undergoing treatment for cancer. He and his wife also donate financially to various Bergen-based entities, including the John Theurer Cancer Center in Hackensack and Bergen CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), which speaks up for children in the foster care system.

“We also give to the American Cancer Society and St. Jude’s,” Rann says, “but most of our charitable giving, in terms of time and money, is local.”

Rann is no outlier. Bergenites, it turns out, are a charitable bunch. When it comes to giving in general, Bergen is the fifth most generous county in New Jersey, which happens to be the country’s fourth most generous state. (The county rankings come from an organization called SmartAsset, which uses Internal Revenue Service data to weigh both total donated amounts per capita and the percentage of citizens who donate.)

And Bergenites don’t just give to local charities. Ridgewood resident Mari Tagliabue, for example, donates to Ridgewood’s Social Services Agency, which supports a local food pantry, but also to the Emmanuel

Bergen is a county of givers, and many of the organizations they support are home-grown.

Cancer Foundation in Clark, New Jersey, which helps families deal with the financial hardships incurred when a child is treated for cancer, and Paterson-based Oasis, supporting families living under the poverty line. “Each of the charities we donate to,” she says, “supports children and moms.”

Similarly, Kate Lee of River Edge divides her donations between local and national organizations. She’s an outdoors enthusiast, and her giving habits reflect her passions. “I’m a hiker, so I donate to the New York–New Jersey Trail Conference,” she says. “But I also support national environmental nonprofits such as the Environmental Defense Fund and the Audubon Society, and animal charities like the Humane Society International and the Animal Legal Defense Fund.”

Whether they donate outside the county or not, donors from Bergen remain the financial backbone of local charities. “A very high percentage of our donations come from Bergen County residents,” says Kate Duggan, executive director of Family Promise of Bergen County, which provides support to working families facing housing insecurity. That’s true for most Bergen-based charities, as the accompanying list reveals.

Whatever charities you choose to support, make sure that they’re legitimate and that they’re likely to use most of your money to fulfill their stated mission, rather than spending too much of it on peripheral costs like executive salaries or fundraising. There are several independent charity watchdogs that offer online ratings of a wide range of nonprofits, among them Charity Navigator

(charitynavigator.org), headquartered in Saddle Brook, whose ratings we used to help us compile our list of excellent Bergen-based charities, Charity Watch (charitywatch.org) and GuideStar (guidestar.org). If you can’t find a charity on these or other rating sites, you can access its IRS form 990, required for all tax-exempt organizations taking in more than $50,000 a year, at Nonprofit Explorer, a project of the nonprofit journalism organization ProPublica (projects.propublica. org/nonprofits/). The form reveals, among other things, how much money the charity took in and how much it actually spent on charitable programs. Beware of soundalikes, less than reputable charities that try to draw you in with names that sound like those of well-known and well-regarded organizations (for example, the Wounded Warrior Fund, a sham charity that sounds a lot like the legitimate Wounded Warrior Project).

There’s no better time to give than right now—a truism underlined by the fact that inflation has expanded the number of Bergen residents in need of services that fight hunger and homelessness and a nationwide downturn in the number of people giving to charity. The philanthropy research organization Giving USA reported that, overall, charitable giving was down in both 2022 and 2023. This so-called “generosity crisis” is likely fueled by a multiplicity of causes, from an uncertain economy to the decline of organized religion, which tends to emphasize charitable giving. If you want to help fill the giving gap and plan to donate at least some of your money (or time) to local charities, the list that follows should help you get started.

THE CHARITIES: WHO THEY ARE AND HOW THEY HELP

For Bergenites considering a gift to one or more local nonprofits, below are verbal snapshots of some of the highestrated Bergen-based charities. We turned to Charity Navigator, the world’s largest charity-rating service and itself a Bergen-based nonprofit, to help us compile and vet the list. The organization assesses charities across four areas it calls “beacons”: impact and results, accountability and finance, leadership and adaptability, and culture and community. Charities receive a numerical rating ranging from zero to 100, as well as a zero- to four-star designation, with those receiving three or four stars earning a “give with confidence” classification. (All of the nonprofits on our list received four stars.) For more information on methodology and individual charities, go to charitynavigator.org.

Note: Our list isn’t meant to be exhaustive, and we encourage you to give to any Bergen-based charity of your choice—but make sure to verify it first.

FIND THE LIGHTS!

At five easy-to-reach attractions, dazzling holiday displays brighten the night.

Whether it’s twinkling electric lights on a Christmas tree or the flickering illumination of a menorah or kinara in the window, the holiday season is an excuse for turning the year’s darkest time into a visual symphony of brightness. Many of our Bergen neighbors go all out, mounting ambitious outdoor holiday light displays at their homes in which each year’s effort strives to outdo the last. A December drive around the ’hood is bound to bring delights. But if you’re ready to drive a little further, there are also places with more space, bigger budgets and more annual visitors that outdo any private home with their holiday lights, and one of them may be worth a trip:

THE BRONX ZOO HOLIDAY LIGHTS

New York City; through Jan. 5.

About an hour from Bergen by car, this tradition transforms one of the nation’s most celebrated zoos into something otherworldly. Millions of twinkling lights invite you and your family to explore paths of life-sized animal lanterns and celebrations of some of the world’s beautiful and naturally bioluminescent creatures. There’s also holiday décor galore, from trees to Santas. Enjoy ice-carving demonstrations, costumed performers, a holiday train ride, interactive exhibits, sweet seasonal treats and much more. And the zoo offers quieter “sensory-friendly” nights (Thursday, Dec. 5, and Friday, Jan. 3) for those with sensory issues.

Beyond the lights: Don’t forget to greet the animals during your visit. The Congo Gorilla exhibit, one of the zoo’s most popular, allows you to get an up-close look at one of our nearest animal relatives. Or drop by in the late afternoon to watch a zookeeper feed the Magellanic penguins. Younger explorers can get a bird’s-eye view of the park with the Nature Trail bridge and balance-beam course, which remains open during the winter.

THE NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN HOLIDAY TRAIN SHOW

New York City; through Jan. 20.

In the year’s coldest season, step into the warmth of nostalgia with this beloved annual tradition. Also about an hour away from Bergen, it shows off plant-based replicas of famed local architecture, creating a miniature cityscape in which model trains and trolleys chug merrily along. Stop by during the day for a lovely outdoor lawn display that brings the picturesque Haupt Conservatory to life with seasonal cheer, or visit after dark for even more lights, live musical performances of holiday favorites, great bites and hands-on gingerbread decorating.

Beyond the lights: Come to this attraction hungry, because NYBG offers truly impressive dining options. For something quick, check out Pine Tree Café, a grab-and-go spot with Neapolitan-style pizza, sandwiches, sweet treats and killer coffee. For a sit-down meal, try The Hudson Garden Grill, a farm-to-table restaurant with innovative New American cuisine. More info: nybg.org

KOZIAR’S CHRISTMAS VILLAGE

Bernville, Pa.; through Jan. 1.

About two-and-a-half hours from Bergen by car and nestled in quiet, rural Berks County, this Christmas attraction has been running for 77 years and is often listed as one of the state’s must-see seasonal attractions. Approaching it is like being transported into a fairy tale—as you crest over the last hill, the darkened country road seems to melt away, to be replaced by a dazzling valley set aglow with more than one million Christmas lights adorning buildings, gift barns and landscape. Visit Santa’s post office to mail your holiday letter (or see the man himself!), grab a treat from the traditional bake shop and wander the winter wonderland at your leisure.

Beyond the lights: While you wait for the sun to go down, there are plenty of other attractions to pass the time in Berks County. Check out the Colebrookdale Railroad in Boyertown, which offers a seasonal Santa’s Polar Bear Express and Winter Wonderland train rides with beautiful scenery and great food; it’s within easy driving distance of the village. Or visit the delightfully quirky Historic Crystal Cave in nearby Kutztown to see a geological wonder.

LONGWOOD CHRISTMAS AT LONGWOOD GARDENS

Kennett Square, Pa.; through Jan. 12.

About two-and-a-half hours from Bergen, this attraction boasts more than 1,100 acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows for the public to enjoy, designed by some of the best landscape architects. During the holidays, thousands of lights illuminate amazing pieces of horticulture, and the garden’s many fountains, lit up in Christmas colors, pulse to holiday music. With sprawling displays and several brand-new spaces unveiled in 2024, this isn’t a show you want to skip.

Beyond the lights: One of those new spaces is The Fountain Room, an airy, inviting space in the heart of Longwood with a spectacular view of the holiday display. On select days, you can enjoy a meal there and try the imaginative Taste of Christmas menu, sure to put you in a holiday mood. For something more hands-on, Longwood also offers holiday-inspired classes and experiences, including classes on preserves and botanical mixology.

ZOOLIGHTS

Smithsonian National Zoological Park, Washington, D.C.; through Jan. 5.

A drive to our nation’s capital will take you about four-and-a-half hours, but the Smithsonian Zoo’s holiday lights display is well worth it. See glowing lantern animals in their dazzling habitats, enjoy live nightly musical performances, take a spin on the Conservation Carousel done up in its holiday best and snack on seasonal treats as you wander the zoo’s sprawling grounds. Nearly every tree you’ll see twinkles with LED lights, directing you to different attractions.

Beyond the lights: The Smithsonian offers you the chance to see almost every animal you can imagine. Check out the elephant exhibit, renowned for its dedication to conservation. At the kids’ farm young ones can get up close and personal with cows, alpacas, donkeys and goats. Want to get some last-minute holiday shopping done while you take in the lights? The zoo has three stores scattered throughout, filled with gifts for the science lovers in your life.

What drives your passion?

People drive my passion. I love to cater to the individual desires of each patient while educating them on their needs and providing those needs in the most minimally invasive way possible. Further, applying the constant evolution of technology being gifted to our profession, simplifying it’s application, and teaching it to other dental professionals.

Can you describe your experience and education in dentistry?

I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to teach in dentistry for the last 30 years. Whether it be the simplification of Cad/Cam technology, applications of different Laser wavelengths in care , or the latest techniques in surgical and restorative implant dentistry. My education will continue to evolve with the newest and most effective technologies and techniques.

Do you use any special technologies?

Minimally invasive dental implant placement through 3D imaging is a staple in the practice. I have been offering and teaching Solea CO2 Laser Care for over 10 years which allows for Drill Free Fillings and Laser gum work. I have taught Cerec Dentistry and CAD/CAM manufacturing since 2002. With this technology we can fabricate crowns and more conservative porcelain restorations in just a single visit. This way you never have to go another day with a chipped, broken, or even missing tooth again! We apply regenerative Laser techniques in Gum care that are FDA approved to regenerate gum attachment and regenerate bone around your teeth. Finally with our Advanced digital imaging we can show you your before and afte smile before we start your cosmetic care.

What are some characteristics that make you and your practice unique?

Our Staff and I are highly trained in all technologies that make dentistry as simple and comfortable for our patients as possible. We Minimize your time at the dentist, ensure comfortable delivery of care while maximizing your results through today’s technologies. We conveniently offer comprehensive care under one roof, so you won’t have to worry about making long treks to other offices or working with dentists you don’t know. Whether it is Complete Implant Care, Aesthetic Smile Design, or General Family Care. We are here for You.

We are a multigenerational practice serving the community for 64 years We are so excited to announce the addition of a 3rd generation soon to join the practice, my oldest son Jay Spector. Who will be graduating NYU dental in May.

Dr. Dayna Cassandra and Associates

351 Evelyn Street Paramus NJ 07652 201.261.7645

hello@cosmeticdentistofparamus.com cosmeticdentistofparamus.com

What is your background education in

dentistry?

I earned my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Maryland Dental School and completed a competitive general residency program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. I continued my education at the Pankey Institute and am currently a faculty member of Spear Education. In addition, I spent many years teaching “functional esthetics” at NYU in the continuing education department.

Was there one thing that made you decide to be a dentist?

As a child, I was a patient at the University of Maryland dental school. Dentistry looked exciting and fun and it was a blend of art and science, both subjects being my favorites. Finally my experience with orthodontics was life changing and it was then that I knew I wanted to be a dentist.

What types of procedures do you perform regularly?

Our practice focuses on Advanced Restorative Dentistry with an emphasis on esthetics. Treatment procedures include full mouth rehabilitations and a variety of cosmetic procedures as well as routine dental care.

Do you use any special technologies?

From modern materials to state-of-the-art dental equipment, we incorporate technology with traditional dentistry daily. Digital technology is used to capture images for treatment planning and design. It replaces traditional x-rays and impressions. It is used to design smiles to fit an individual’s face and restore teeth to proper anatomical form and function. A 3d printer allows us to fabricate models and appliances right here in our office and a milling machine to fabricate crowns in one visit without the need for temporary dentistry.

What are some characteristics that make you and your practice unique?

We work together as a team to deliver a level of care that exceeds expectations of a dental office. We empower our patients to take control of their oral health so that it has a positive impact on their overall health and wellness.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

A Tasty 4 From ’24

BERGEN’s restaurant reviewer recalls some of the year’s most memorable meals.

There’s little room for sentimentality when you dine as a proxy for the reading public. Your taste buds demand to be dazzled, and excellence in fresh ingredients and a meal’s conception and execution is the expected norm—no big deal. Remembering yesterday’s culinary triumphs quickly yields to an insistent new question: What’s on the menu for today?

Still, when I look back on the restaurants I’ve visited in the line of duty in 2024, my mind does flash on certain favorite meals—and they’re not necessarily the fanciest or costliest ones. The four below, for example, reflect well on recent entrants into the world of Bergen eateries. I find myself semi-consciously coming up with excuses to go back and taste them again.

• NOT QUITE BEEF AND BROCCOLI, FAT CHOY, ENGLEWOOD.

favorite dish through the assortment of selections.

—Fat Choy, 52 E. Palisade Ave., Englewood, 201.408.4581; fatchoyworld.com

• CHICKEN WINGS WITH 65 SAUCE, MEHFIL CAFÉ, RAMSEY. You can get good chicken wings at just about any bar and grill in Bergen County, but this Indian restaurant along Route 17 can plate wings with the best of

I enjoyed my first-ever all-vegan meal at this restaurant, which opened in late 2023. Having ordered classic beef and broccoli at neighborhood Chinese kitchens for what seems like my entire life, I had to try Fat Choy’s vegan version during my visit this year. Instead of using tofu or another ingredient meant to look like beef, Fay Choy deploys a medley of mushrooms with superb umami flavor to fill this dish. To my surprise, I wasn’t searching for the taste and texture of beef; I simply enjoyed the fresh broccoli and mushrooms. The restaurant has since rebranded itself from a sit-down vegan establishment to build-yourown-bowl format (it now has vegan, vegetarian and meat options), but you can easily recreate my

• MIXED GRILL, DODONA CAFÉ, CLIFFSIDE PARK. I get wide eyes whenever I see a mixed grill platter on the menu in a Greek bistro or a Lebanese restaurant. I’d never been to an Albanian eatery before trying Dodona Café this summer, but its mixed grill proved just as tempting. At Dodona, the dish (the food actually is served on a large wooden board) comes with an assortment of grilled meats: qebapa (minced veal sausage), suxhuk (spicy beef sausage) and qofte (flattened veal meatballs). All three were juicy, tender and flavored with an unforgettable array of Albanian spices.

them. It combines large, deep-fried wings with a sauce made from yogurt, lemon juice, spices and chili. They don’t claim to be old-fashioned buffalo wings or gastropub-esque garlic parm wings (Mehfil Café has those too), but 65 chicken is a fiery-hot dish that’s bursting with flavor and is a must-try here. The café is closed for renovations, but it’s set to reopen Dec. 31.

• KIMCHI BACON JAM BURGER, BURGER PLAY, FORT LEE. There’s something gratifying when your fast-casual order turns up one of the best burgers you’ve ever tried. That’s how I felt when I had the Kimchi Bacon Jam Burger at this new eatery, a few blocks away from Anthony Bourdain’s favorite, Hiram’s. The sandwich was well constructed with a single patty, American cheese, shredded lettuce, onion, special sauce (similar to a comeback sauce) and bacon kimchi jam. The beautiful patty crumbled easily in the mouth, as the sweet creaminess of the sauce blended perfectly with the savory tanginess of the jam.

A BERGEN MOMENT

“I was coming home from CVS in Montvale and saw a doe crossing East Saddle River Road. I expected her babies or a friend of hers to be close behind, so I slowed down. I was not disappointed as I’ve never seen so many bucks in one spot. They looked beautiful, so I had to pull over and take a picture. I love how they are all in a row.”
