{ EDITOR’S NOTE } A County Counts Its Blessings

It’s a traveler’s truism: We tend to scour guidebooks for all the spots worth checking out in every destination—except home. Thus some Bergenites can tell you about every trattoria in Florence, but don’t know that there’s a pizza place just across town that would change their lives if they took time to discover it.

Discovery, in essence, is the mission of BERGEN’s annual Guide issue. Listing 19 categories of locales and shops and services, this one, like its predecessors, offers readers the chance to find new favorite spots and rediscover places they’ve loved but lost the habit of visiting. That enchanting bookstore, that soothing spa, that mouthwatering bakery—in our listings you’ll find these gems and many, many more. (And if a deserving favorite is missing from our pages, please let us know, so that we can clue readers in about it in next year’s edition!)

Whether you’re new to the county or have lived here your entire life, the lists in this guide will serve as a resource for ideas on where to go and what to do. And Bergen has so much to offer: five-star dining, fabulous shopping, indoor and outdoor entertainment. The Guide has the arts covered too. Check out our listings of museums, theaters and concert halls.

There’s more. You can find fun facts about Bergen County on page 12, then head to page 16 to read about our historic, picturesque train stations. Finally, see if you recognize the landmark pictured on page 72.

If you were visiting much-blessed Bergen County, there’d be innumerable places for you to discover. But you get to live here. Let this Guide remind you just how lucky you are.
