{ EDITOR’S NOTE }
Getting Out, Having Fun There’s something about summer—that three-month whirlwind of beach days, weekend getaways and barbecues—that makes me smile. Could it be the deeprooted reminder of childhood days spent out of school doing nothing more than playing? Or is it simply the brighter days and warmer weather that put me in a good mood? There’s a line in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby that has always resonated: “…I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with summer.” Yes! That’s exactly how I feel. For me, the season is all about being outside, whether I’m spending a day with family at Van Saun Park or enjoying a twilight cookout with friends in my backyard. Our Summer Issue is filled with ideas on how you can enjoy your time outdoors. In “Nature Calls,” you’ll find four pages devoted to ways you can enjoy nature right here in Bergen County, from biking and kayaking to birding and fishing. Turn to page 44 to see the entire list and choose where you’ll have your next adventure. If you choose to hike in one (or more) of our area’s parks, consider one of the high-tech devices in “Measure What Matters.” This story details five types of fitness trackers that will not only count steps and calories, some can even monitor heart rate, metabolism or posture. Flip to page 42 and find out which works best for you. Not the active type or prefer to entertain at home? Invite family and friends for an afternoon of outdoor dining. But don’t just settle for paper plates—follow some of the decorating tips in “A Breath of Fresh Air”on page 56 to throw a garden party your guests will remember. And we can’t talk about the season without mentioning the Boys of Summer. River Vale’s Jack Curry, whom many know from Yankees broadcasts on the YES network, spoke with BERGEN about baseball, bagels and his new book, which he co-authored with former Bronx Bomber pitcher David Cone. Read what he had to say in “Channeling A Pitcher” on page 62. Of course, June means much more than the start of summer—it’s also the time when we celebrate dads. This month’s For Men Only (page 26) and Jewelry Box (page 32) offer several Father’s Day gift ideas, any of which will bring a smile to his face. We hope these and all the articles in this issue bring a smile to your face, just like The Weather Channel’s “What Season Are You?” personality quiz I took for fun a couple of years back. The result? Drumroll, please. I’m a “summer”—naturally. Find out which season are you: bergenmag.com/whatseasonareyouquiz.

DINE WITH DAD Father’s Day is coming June 16, and with it your chance to turn the tables on the old man and pick up the check yourself. You’ll enjoy a snack, drink or meal with Dad at these local eateries all the more knowing there’s a father/ son duo behind the amazing food and service. Happy Dad’s Day! 103 Prime at Valentino’s As a teenager, Jerry Colella helped out his dad, Angelo, at what was then known as Valentino’s Park Ridge and eventually became general manager. During a stint at another restaurant, Jerry felt “something was missing” when he and his dad weren’t together, so he returned to help bring a “steakhouse and seafood concept” to the new and improved eatery. Jerry and Angelo are now managing partner and chef/owner, respectively. “The best thing is I get to see my father a lot and we get a lot of time together to discuss food,” he says. “There is definitely some butting of heads and we see some things differently, but I’ve enjoyed being back.” • 103 Prime at Valentino’s, 103 Spring Valley Rd., Park Ridge, 201.391.2220
Oceanos This upscale Mediterranean seafood bistro in Fair Lawn is owned and operated by the Panteleakis family. Patriarch Peter, executive chef and owner, wakes up at the crack of dawn each day to select his seafood and bake fresh bread by hand. Meanwhile, oldest son Nikos is officially the manager, but he’s often found stirring up cocktails or taking plates to customers’ tables. Still, as they say, behind every great man is a great woman: The Panteleakis mama helps out her men by managing everything behind the scenes. • Oceanos, 2-27 Saddle River Rd., Fair Lawn, 201.796.0546
Everything Bagel Elliot Cohen of Englewood worked for 25 years in business and finance, and even owned a few bagel stores in New Jersey with his son Andrew of Edgewater. But in 2018, the Cohens, who also work together in home development, created Everything Bagel in Paramus, a “novelty” breakfast and lunch shop that sells bagels of many kinds, including seasonal ones shaped like ghosts, hearts
Bite Food & Coffee Co. Since graduating from college in 2017, Franklin Lakes native Kareem Elzarka has helped his dad, Mike, manage several Manhattan delis. But the father-son pair had dreams of opening their own eatery and introduced Bite Food & Coffee Co. in Hackensack earlier this year. The hangout serves up breakfast and lunch and appeals to the millennial set with its industrial aesthetic and fun pops of pink throughout.
or even Christmas trees. “Since we owned the real estate on Route 17, we decided to use it for this shop when it became vacant,” says the elder Cohen, who manages day-today operations while Andrew handles sales. “The best part about working with my son is that we’re family so there’s trust there, but the worst is bringing the work home.” At family gatherings, he admits, “it definitely comes up a lot.” • Everything Bagel, 483 Rte. 17 S., Paramus, 201.599.9999
Barrel & Brew Bar & Liquor Albert Tirado of Old Tappan already owned a supermarket in New York State, but he wanted to take on another venture with his son, Albert Tirado Jr. So they turned an old dive bar in New Milford into a tucked-away, industrial-looking speakeasy that sells craft beer and spirits. The elder Tirado handles ordering and admin work, while his son is in charge of day-to-day operations. “Every time we work together on a project I always learn something new,” Albert Jr. says. “My dad has always instilled in me that the details are the most important part of any decision.” • Barrel & Brew, 872 River Rd., New Milford, 201.261.4400

DID YOU KNOW? The most Googled Father’s Day gift in New Jersey in 2016 was the Apple Watch. Check your dad’s wrist and see if he needs an updated watch—the Apple is now on Series 4. BERGENMAG.COM

FIT FOR A KING
BE PROUD
June brings the official start of summer, but it’s also known internationally as Gay Pride Month, when parades, rallies and events worldwide celebrate the LGBTQ community. You needn’t cross the Hudson to join in; here’s how you can take part in Pride right here in Bergen: JUNE 1: Glen Rock Pride Flag Raising Ceremony and Pride in the Park Glen Rock’s third annual Pride event starts at noon in Wilde Memorial Park, where community leaders and LGBTQ activists will raise the Pride Flag and unite for an afternoon of music, crafts, poetry, kids’ activities and an art gallery. New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal will be the keynote speaker, and Glen Rock Mayor Bruce Packer will MC. JUNE 13: The County of Bergen’s LGBTQ Pride Celebration and Flag Raising Since 1974, Hackensack has raised a Pride Flag in June. But in recent years the annual countywide Pride celebration has become a larger and larger production, uniting state and local officials (including County Executive Jim Tedesco) and activists for a full-on celebration held at One Bergen County Plaza. This year’s festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. JUNE 21: Cresskill Rainbow Lounge for LGBTQ Youth Every third Friday of the month, Cresskill Congregational Church holds a meet-up for LGBTQ youth ages 13–19 from 7 to 9 p.m. Teens can hang out, play games, make new friends and discuss issues they face as a result of their sexual orientation. JUNE 30: Tenafly Pride Day Beginning in 2018, the borough officially has declared the last Sunday in June Tenafly Pride Day to bring visibility to its LGBTQ community. The second annual event in 2019 includes a parade beginning at Huyler Park, followed by a festive flag raising and ceremony.
What do you do when you can’t sell your multi-million-dollar mansion? Put it up for rent. NBA Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing’s Cresskill home has been on the market since 2015, but after dropping the listing price multiple times from $7 million to $4.8 million, he’s opted to rent it out instead. The 7-bedroom, 8-bathroom home featuring a gourmet kitchen, outdoor pool and spa and—of course—a basketball court can be yours for a cool $25K a month.

FATHER’S DAY FUN Stumped on what to do for Dad on his day, June 16? These events in the county have Pops in mind: Westwood Dad Dash, Westvale Park, 8:45 a.m. The Dad Dash is a mostly flat 5K walk or run through shaded park paths and residential areas; there’ll also be a DJ and kids’ activities. Dad’s Day concludes with a barbecue. Father’s Day Walk, Tenafly Nature Center, 1 p.m. If your dad is outdoorsy—or just likes to spend quality time with his family—this guided walking tour through nature is something you all can enjoy. Bonus: Dads and kids under 2 are free. Father’s Day 5K and 10K, Virtual (but based in Jersey City), 1 p.m. This “virtual” race can be completed anywhere, anytime, at your leisure within June (you just submit your finishing time to get your medal mailed to you). But it’s held on Father’s Day for a reason—proceeds from the $20 run go toward Team Hoyt, an organization that honors Rick Hoyt, disabled at birth due to cerebral palsy, and his father, Dick, who wheeled him to the finish line of a 5K in 1977 and shared many subsequent races with him. Elton Johnish: Tribute to Elton John, Mahwah Public Library, 2 p.m. If Dad is a fan of the Rocket Man, take him to this free concert at Mahwah Public Library, where Andrew Schwarz will pay homage to the award-winning singer by performing some of his early hits such as “Tiny Dancer” and “Crocodile Rock.”
DOG: Milly, 9-year-old Yorkshire terrier OWNERS: Jennifer and Scott Moore, Ramsey This petite canine thinks big. She’s always there to guard her owners with her bark, and she follows them throughout the house. And it’s clear Milly is a summer pup, as her favorite pastimes include looking out the window and seeking out and then lying in the sunny spots around her home. What are the favorite indoor hobbies of this pooch who’ll hit the double-digit birthday this August? Playing with toy ropes, eating treats and cuddling with her “parents” on the couch. Ruff life! BLOW-DRY BONANZA Most beauty salons do it all—hair, nails, waxing, makeup, the works. But sometimes all you want is a good ol’ blowout so you can look and feel your best for a special occasion or a big day at work. These Bergen spots specialize in and excel at blowouts (and whatever else they do): BLOWBAR LOCATION: 934 River Rd., Edgewater THE DEETS: Besides a slew of blow-dry options, this place also has a Brow Bar, offering eyebrow waxes, tints and faux lash applications. There’s also an in-store pop-up with Glow + Co. Spray Tan on weekends, from 12 to 4 p.m. PRICE: $37 for a 45-minute blowout BLO BLOWDRY BAR LOCATION: 807 Franklin Ave., Franklin Lakes THE DEETS: You’ll leave this cute spot tressed to impress—lush white chairs and pops of pink only add to Blo’s top-notch salon experience. PRICE: $40–$49 depending on hair type, plus extra if you have extensions, want deep conditioning or prefer a style that’s not on the “menu.” DRYBAR LOCATION: Garden State Plaza (next to Shake Shack), Paramus THE DEETS: Each style here is named after a drink—try a “Straight Up,” an “Old Fashioned” or a “Shirley Temple” for the kids. Despite its name, Drybar also serves champagne or mimosas free of charge to customers, which certainly ups the relaxation factor. PRICE: $49 with a wash included; add $10 for a scalp massage or a braid or $20 for extensions.
MOXIE SALON & BEAUTY BAR
LOCATIONS: 74 E. Ridgewood Ave, Ridge-
wood; 25 Promenade Blvd. #16, Fair Lawn; 20-30 Chestnut Ridge Rd., Montvale; and 27 N. Dean St., Englewood THE DEETS: Moxie does a little bit of everything, from eyelash tinting to manicures to waxing and threading— haircuts and coloring included. PRICE: $29 for a basic blowout or more for a “Bobbi Pin Blowout,” which uses bobby pins to make the look last longer. ROLLER DRY LOCATION: 830 Kinderkamack Rd., River Edge THE DEETS: Roller Dry offers the traditional blowout, but sets itself apart by setting hair in rollers before drying, which results in an even bouncier, longer-lasting look. PRICE: $35 for a traditional blowout, $40 for a blowout with rollers RUNWAY BLOWOUT LOUNGE LOCATION: 70 E. Main St., Ramsey THE DEETS: Runway is a one-stop shop for a haircut, a smoothing treatment, color or makeup application, but the salon’s bread and butter is the “Runway Signature” wash, blowout and style. PRICE: $40 for the Runway Signature; $30 for a bun or pony, dry styling without the wash or clients under 10.
MOVING ON UP Rashan Gary is headed to the big leagues. The Paramus Catholic footballer was drafted by the Green Bay Packers as their top pick and 12th pick overall in the 2019 NFL draft. During his stint at Paramus Catholic, Gary was named New Jersey’s top defensive player in 2014 and 2015 and went on to play defensive end at the University of Michigan.
WHY MESS WITH A GOOD THING?
Statewide recognition is cool, but nationwide’s even cooler. That’s why Pizza Town USA in Elmwood Park is celebrating. It’s been named one of 56 Greatest Old-School Pizzerias in America by the website The Daily Meal. The establishment has remained largely unchanged since it opened in 1958, with a glowing, can’t-miss-it-from-Route-46 neon sign and counter-style ordering. The pizza is fine too, as are the calzones, subs and zeppoles.

BYE-BYE, BAGS Next time you’re shopping in Glen Rock, don’t forget to bring your reusable shopping bags from home. The borough is the latest in New Jersey to ban single-use plastic bags, including those used to carry food items, prescription meds, newspaper, laundry, dry cleaning and pet waste. Retailers must legally make reusable bags available to customers and sell them for about 10 cents each. The ban takes effect in January 2020—at that time, fines for violations will range from $50 to $200.

KUDOS THE FUTURE IS FEMALE
In a few years you may recognize the name Clara Kim. The high-achieving student at Westwood’s Primoris Academy is one of 100 recipients of Amazon’s first-ever Future Engineer Scholarship, given to the next generation of leaders in computer science. Thanks to her academic achievements, extracurricular activities and other factors, Kim received a $10,000-a-year scholarship to the college of her choice and a guaranteed paid internship at Amazon after her freshman year of college.
OUR SCHOOLS RULE
Bergen County is often lauded for its amazing public education, and now the entire state is taking note. Edward H. Bryan School in Cresskill (#1) and School No. 1 in Fort Lee (#5) ranked in the top five of the 50 best public middle and elementary schools in the state. The ranking isn’t a complete picture, as the numbers were based primarily on standardized test scores, but it’s still good to be recognized.
GOOD SPORTS
We’re not too shabby in athletics either. In niche.com’s rankings of the state’s best high school sports programs, Pascack Valley, River Dell and Ramapo nabbed the third, seventh and ninth spots, respectively.
CULINARY CORNER ANY WAY YOU SLICE IT That new pizzeria in Edgewater is hardly your typical pizza place. Rasco’s features larger-than-average slices, all baked in a Marsal pizza oven for an extra-crispy crust. There are also calzones and a fullon salad bar. • Rasco’s Pizzeria, 4 Main St., Edgewater, 201.917.5115
EAT YOUR GREENS Ridgewood has a plethora of cuisines; now it can tick the “vegetarian and vegan” box too. Green Fusion, a new eatery located across from the Graydon Pool, offers a variety of salads, sandwiches and entrées, as well as vegetarian dishes like General Tso’s cauliflower and masala tofu. Check out our review on page 88. • Green Fusion, 22 Oak St., Ridgewood, 201.670.7502
GO GREEN
With a nickname of The Garden State, it’s not a shock that New Jersey is green, but just how green are we? According to a new WalletHub study, which looked at factors such as environmental quality, eco-friendly behaviors and climate change in each state, New Jersey is the 16th greenest state in the U.S. of A. Our Northeast neighbors Vermont and New York snagged the top two spots on the list.
UPWARD DOG Once shut out from public places in Ridgewood—collared dogs on leashes are now permitted in Citizens Park, Graydon Park, North Road Park, Pleasant Park, Twinney Pond Park, Memorial Park at Van Neste Square and paths at Veterans Memorial Field. Earlier this spring, the Village Council passed an ordinance lifting a previous puppy ban in most parks. Fido still won’t be allowed on public playing fields, playgrounds or tennis courts, but hey, one step at a time.

HACKENSACK HOLE-INTHE-WALL
White Manna in Hackensack is undeniably one of our area’s most lauded restaurants, and it just nabbed another honor. The legendary burger shack has been dubbed one of The Daily Meal’s 75 best hole-in-the-wall restaurants in America. The old school store is aesthetically unimpressive, but it’s the food that matters. White Manna’s famous burger, cooked on the grill, smashed between a potato roll and accessorized with pickles and onions, was dubbed one of the best burgers in America— even better when paired with crinkle-cut fries and a shake.

WELCOME TO
East Rutherford
Sports fans, concert-goers and shopping enthusiasts in and around Bergen County undoubtedly know a little bit about East Rutherford—it’s home to MetLife Stadium and, by late summer, the 3-million-sq.-ft. American Dream mall. But there are other reasons to pay a visit to—or buy a home in—this 4.052-sq.-mile borough, located just 7 miles from Midtown Manhattan.
MEADOWLANDS SPORTS COMPLEX
American Dream Meadowlands, a gigantic shopping and entertainment center, will boast more than 400 retail stores, 100 restaurants, an amusement park, a water park, an ice-skating rink, a mini golf course and tons more. Though the project’s oft-delayed completion has been pushed back again, developers are hopeful that the complex will open later this summer.
East Rutherford’s original moniker was Boiling Springs Township, named for a spring in the community. But East Rutherford’s title officially changed, even though its borders did not, when it became its own borough in 1894.
IN THE NEWS
HOME, SWEET HOME Thinking about buying or selling a home here? The median home value in East Rutherford is $417,900, up 6.9 percent over the past year, according to Zillow. Home values are predicted to rise 4 percent over the next year.
The Hudson Group, which operates almost 1,000 Hudson, Hudson News, Hudson Booksellers, cafes, specialty retail and duty-free shops in airports and train stations across the United States and Canada, is based at Meadowlands Plaza in East Rutherford. You also may have seen Hudson newsstands and stores at New York Penn Station, Newark Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal and Port Authority—basically, they’re everywhere.
PARKS AND REC
EASTRUTHERFORDNJ.NET
The largest sports and entertainment complex in New Jersey currently consists of MetLife Stadium, home to the NFL’s New York Jets and New York Giants and concert arena for 80,000 fans; the Meadowlands Racetrack, known to locals as “The Big M;” and the Quest Diagnostics Training Center, the Giants’ private training facility. Its newest addition will be American Dreams Meadowlands.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
MUCH MORE THAN A MALL
n ESTABLISHED: 1894 n POPULATION: 9,433 n WEBSITE:
DINING OUT Whether you’re grabbing a bite before a big game or concert or just hankering for some eats, East Rutherford has all the bases covered. Get yummy Italian-American fare at Annabella’s House of Mozzarella. You’ll have a delicious meal plus get that small-town vibe at The New Park Tavern, while Candlewyck Diner has extremely generous portions of whatever it is you’re craving. Special occasion? Book a table at Elia—both its beachy décor and Mediterranean-inspired, fishheavy menu will transport you out of New Jersey and right onto the Greek islands.
FAMOUS FACES
A few noteworthy people and celebrities have called East Rutherford home. Most notable are, from left to right, Dick Vitale, an ESPN college basketball analyst who attended East Rutherford High School and later coached basketball there; Diane Ruggiero, a TV writer and producer most known for Veronica Mars, was discovered while waitressing at now-defunct restaurant Park and Orchard; and professional wrestler James Manley, known by his stage name Jim Powers, who moved to East Rutherford after retiring from the WWE in 2010.
Even though its entertainment complexes will keep locals and visitors plenty occupied, there’s lots of outdoor fun to be had in East Rutherford too. The town is home to various parks, including Sesselman and Memorial (pictured), as well as Riggin Memorial Field, where the touted Little League team plays from March to August each year.

DID YOU KNOW? East Rutherford is the smallest town in the United States to have ever hosted a Super Bowl. Super Bowl XLVIII, which saw the Seattle Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos, was held at MetLife Stadium in 2014. BERGENMAG.COM

{ HEALTH NEWS } TEENS NEED THEIR ZZZS
Not enough sleep among teens is normal and might account for crankiness and poor grades, but researchers now say that the teens with the least amount of sleep were less heart healthy and had increased body fat, higher blood pressure and lower levels of HDL (or good cholesterol) than their counterparts getting at least seven hours of “quality” sleep each night. To determine quality of sleep, researchers measured the hours between when the teen fell asleep and woke up for good. —Kaiser Permanente Northern California

MEASURE WHAT MATTERS Trackers just might be what the doctor ordered to help you get and stay fit. Fitness and wellness trackers are great tools to help you get serious about keeping active. They’re designed to be comfortable, easy to use and fashionable, and most are offered in a range of bracelet styles in varying colors. Fitness trackers (also called sportbands) can help track daily and weekly activity levels and ensure your heart rate stays within a safe zone while working out. Monitoring gadgets have graduated beyond just counting steps and tracking sleep. Today you can get data on how your body metabolizes carbs and fats, improve your posture, keep stress in check and more. More than that, fitness trackers and wellness monitors can serve as the motivation you need to keep up your new regimen. They provide encouragement that ranges from a virtual coach who delivers voiced approval while you’re exercising to gamelike scoring systems that reward you for progress and prompt you to share your accomplishments with friends for positive reinforcement. But picking the right tracker can be a bit tricky. Sportbands come in many shapes and sizes, offer varying features and can differ in price by hundreds of dollars. Begin by identifying the key features you want. If all you need is a device that counts your steps and tracks calories burned, you can get away with spending a lot less. If you want something more advanced—like
the ability to track your jogging route via GPS without bringing your phone with you—you’ll pay a lot more. You also should consider details such as battery life—some sport bands and trackers need to be recharged every few days; others come with a replaceable battery that can last up to a year—and the companion app that’s available for your phone. Depending on how serious you want to get about monitoring and improving your performance, these apps can make a big difference. Some simply organize and present information collected by your tracker (which might be all you really need), while others provide detailed reports and insights on each of your daily activities, help you set long-term goals and connect you with a network of peers for extra motivation. Typically free, these apps can be downloaded in advance so you can browse their features to get a better sense of which tracker and app are right for you. We’ve rounded up a handful of popular fitness trackers and wellness monitors to give you a sense of what’s available. They differ widely in form and function but you can be confident that all of them are designed with one primary purpose: to help you become the healthier, fitter version of yourself that you want to be.

FITBIT ALTA HR GARMIN VIVOFIT 4
$80 Garmin’s entry-level fitness tracker covers the sportband basics, counting steps, tracking distance traveled and calories burned and monitoring your sleep. Its small, noninteractive color screen provides essential information, but to see more details you’ll need to open a companion app on your smartphone. The Garmin’s biggest selling point is its battery life—up to a year with standard use, at which point you’ll need to replace a pair of little lithium discs.
LUMEN
$100 From one of the companies credited with starting the fitness-tracker trend, the Fitbit Alta is a blissfully simple and easy-to-understand sportsband designed to gently nudge you toward maintaining a healthier lifestyle. It tracks your steps, distance traveled and calories burned, sends you little reminders to get up and move when you’ve been stationary too long and even tracks your sleeping habits. What’s more is this Fitbit also offers continuous, wristbased heart rate tracking. It connects to your phone, but you also can see and review key stats on the Alta’s bright and clear touch display. You can expect about five days of use per charge.
UPRIGHT GO
$80 Working at a computer all day and constantly looking down at smartphones has made “screen slouch” a common problem. Poor posture can lead to neck pain, back problems, poor balance, headaches and even breathing difficulties, according to Harvard Health Publishing. This growing posture problem was the impetus for the creation of the Upright Go, a posture tracker worn on the upper back. When in training mode, the device emits a gentle buzz when you slouch. When switched into the tracking mode, Upright Go tracks your posture throughout the day through a free smartphone app, which also offers a personalized posture training plan with the recommended time you should train each day to improve posture in the long term.

$249 With just a breath, a new device set to launch in September 2019 (and available for pre-order now) can detect how your body burns carbohydrates and fat. The Lumen metabolism tracker is simple to use—you inhale, hold your breath for 10 seconds and breathe out into the wand-like device. In real-time, the corresponding smartphone app provides data on your current metabolism. The app also tracks how meals and activities from the day before are affecting your metabolism today and suggests diet adjustments you can make to achieve your goals. By understanding how your body metabolizes different foods, small changes to the way you eat can have a big impact on your weight and energy levels.
SPIRE HEALTH TAGS
$299 Spire Health Tags turn any garment into smart clothes. These little devices work best clipped into undergarments or pajamas and are true “Renaissance men” of health trackers. Spire Health Tags can read heart rate, tell you how many steps you took or calories you burned and break down your night’s sleep by light sleep, deep sleep and REM. But, they also measure stress levels and ability to focus, providing data on both physical and mental well-being. The Spire smartphone app collects the data from the device and gives recommendations for reducing stress. These health tags don’t need to be recharged—they have a battery life of a year and a half—and you can toss your clothes with tags in the laundry as you would with any washable garment.

PLACES TO GO BIRD-WATCHING
from the experts
Ornithology enthusiasts are at home in Bergen, with a wide variety of winged species and great spots for ogling them. See the sites below; learn more at bergencountyaudubon.org and njaudubon.org.
IF YOU LOVE BOATING:
CELERY FARM, Franklin Tpk., Allendale. This 107-acre wildlife oasis in the middle of the suburbs is home to 240-plus species of birds, more than 53 of which breed there.
LORRIMER SANCTUARY, 790 Ewing Ave., Franklin Lakes. A self-guided trail system winds through 14 acres of oak and maple, where you might hear migrant songbirds.
DEKORTE PARK, 2 DeKorte Park Plz., Lyndhurst. This New Jersey Meadowlands park is on the Atlantic Flyway, one of the three key routes used by migratory birds in the U.S.
MEHRHOF POND WILDLIFE OBSERVATION AREA, Mehrhof Rd., Little Ferry. This grassy plot of land adjacent to the 28-acre Losen Slote Creek Park opened in April 2018 and has been attracting bird watchers for many reasons: There are plenty of egrets, herons, bald eagles and more to spot. OVERPECK COUNTY PARK CREEK, 40 Fort Lee Rd., Leonia, on the banks of Overpeck Creek. It’s great for spotting wading birds, waterfowl and shore birds. Migration season brings opportunities to spot bald eagles, osprey, broad-winged hawks and more.
Hugh Carola, program director, HACKENSACK RIVERKEEPER, HACKENSACK
“Overpeck Park is one of the best places for canoeing and kayaking because you can bring your own boat or rent a boat. It’s great for families, for novices and for people who haven’t paddled in a while and are a little rusty. It’s also a good place to practice your form and to try different kinds of boats out if you’re looking to buy your own.”
STATE LINE LOOKOUT, Palisades Interstate Parkway N., Alpine. This is the highest point along the Hudson Palisades, 520 feet above the river. It’s one of the state’s 14 official hawkcounting sites. TEANECK CREEK CONSERVANCY, 20 Puffin Way, Teaneck. The 1.2 miles of wetland walkways make for a prominent bird-watching spot. Don’t forget to catch “Migration Mileposts,” which feature trailside artwork that celebrates the birds of the Atlantic Flyway.
Captain Bill Sheehan, The Riverkeeper, HACKENSACK RIVERKEEPER, HACKENSACK
“The Hackensack River offers a lot of wildlife viewing, and there are some nice quiet areas even though you’re stuck between two highways in the most densely populated county in the most densely populated state. As soon as you get down to the southern part of the county by the Meadowlands, you feel like you’re in the wilderness even though you can look over your shoulder and see the New York skyline.”
IF YOU LOVE BIRDING:
BIKING
Cyclists, rejoice! THE SADDLE RIVER COUNTY PARK BIKE PATH extends for almost 6 miles through the towns of Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Fair Lawn, Paramus, Saddle Brook and Rochelle Park along the Saddle River and Ho-HoKus Brook. It goes by the historic Easton Tower on Route 4 as well as a scenic waterfall at Dunkerhook Park. The trail also weaves past ponds, picnic areas, playgrounds, tennis courts and athletic fields.

FISHING What could be better for a relaxing day outdoors than a fishing expedition? Happily, the county offers many promising spots. Here are a few of our faves:
You can launch your kayak or canoe at 157-acre Overpeck Lake in Ridgefield Park, where you might discover a largemouth bass, catfish or carp tugging at your line. Largemouth bass and catfish also can be found at 120-acre Ramapo Lake in Oakland, but you’re more likely to catch pickerel and yellow perch there. Angling for trout? Head to the Ramapo River, which is accessible at points in Mahwah and Oakland. Every spring the NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife stocks the river with rainbow trout. For a fishing spot on the Hudson, cast off at the Englewood Boat Basin in Englewood Cliffs. There are plenty of fish here, and you’ll get a gorgeous view of the NYC skyline. Don’t forget that a New Jersey fishing license ($22.50, $12.50 for seniors) is required for anyone between the ages of 16 and 70. BATHROOM BLISS Home is where the spa is for two physicians who treasure relaxation.
By Donna Rolando Design by Aparna Vijayan Photography by Peter Rymwid
A Wyckoff couple with busy schedules as doctors turned their master-bathroom remodel into a prescription for a peaceful and stress-free life. Uma, a pediatrician, and husband Samir, a cancer surgeon, wanted more than just to transform the room from cookie-cutter to wow. Their colonial’s new space had to be both stylish and soothing. So they brought on board Ridgewood’s Ulrich Inc. to create a luxury home spa with countless ways to rejuvenate—for when at last it’s “me” time, after hours spent helping others. “My old bathroom was 17 years old,” says Uma, who reFor all the rejuvenation power of a day spa without the trip, one Wyckoff family used their master bathroom’s makeover moment to create the ultimate after-work refuge. Drawing from nature with the stone ledger-style accent wall over the deep soaking tub was one way designer Aparna Vijayan set the stage for maximum relaxation. Two decorative niches in the stone wall (perfect for mood candles or must-haves), a hand-held shower and a platform seat for easy swing-your-legs-over entry are among the tub elements that help to soothe both body and spirit.

calls the plain vanilla décor that, coupled with age, made the room ripe for change. This time, she says, “I was looking to have something very Zen, where I would spend a half hour to 45 minutes a night and just feel very peaceful.” The mother of two teens loves the new room’s soaking tub with its waterfall-effect faucet and heated back and neck rest and massage, not to mention the Toto bidet toilet that’s so luxurious the couple remembers missing it during a recent trip to Costa Rica. But the “spa” and its open airy shower with water coming from “seven different directions” could easily be called a family favorite, says Uma. The redesign also had to tame stress with a functional design that met the demands of everyday life. Both doctors use the bathroom to get ready for their work day; they wanted a space that was easy to share. To meet these varied requirements, designer Aparna Vijayan started with a single inspiration. For the accent wall beyond the tub, she chose a textured stone facing with dramatic layers of slate, amber and brown. Uma had admired something like it at a resort and thought natural stone said “spa” better than man-made, she says. In that single accent, Vijayan saw more than the perfect stage for mood-setting candles and Asian art, matching the bedroom’s décor. It was the ideal launchpad for colors in the rest of the spa, from the creamy tone of the shower’s BERGENMAG.COM

large-format tiles to the Emperador Dark marble lookalike (it’s easy-toclean quartz) for the tub area and window sills. Simple maintenance was also a priority for these relaxation-minded homeowners, so Vijayan used quartz for all the counters and designed the room sans a shower enclosure for a tropical resort vibe and no hard-water stains. To create an “organic” effect in the shower area, Vijayan teamed up river pebbles in a free-flowing pattern with the look of cedar planks extending to the ceiling. (Relax, it’s really porcelain.) She also maximized the connection to the backyard’s beauty with tempered and frosted windows that require no blinds or shades for privacy. For a bathroom meant to be shared, Vijayan set the “throne” apart in its own room with a frosted glass pocket door and storage and added a double vanity to keep a spacious flow. (To say the toilet is easy to care for is an understatement—it cleans itself!) The vanity is also a winner for its floating cabinets, which have a way of accentuating a room’s size, and “his and hers” sinks in amber glass, which are one piece with the counter. A glass mosaic brings shine to the vanity backsplash and works the same magic on the window trim. And, in addition to more natural illumination, the designer added seven high-hat lights that almost double the room’s fixtures. Says a contented Uma: “The end result is exactly what I wanted.”

Left: The woodsy backyard provides a four-season glimpse of nature that fits in well with a spa setting—if it isn’t masked with the blinds and curtains usually needed in a bathroom. The solution? Vijayan made sure all the windows are tempered glass and frosted for privacy, allowing a view that knows no limits. Right: The open, airy look continues with the pebble-floored shower area, which gets the job done with multiple body spray jets and a rain shower and easy-to-clean enclosures. Hard water made the old one “a nuisance” to keep clean, says Uma.

{ HELPFUL HINTS }
KEEP CRITTERS AWAY Here are 6 ways to prevent pesky animals from feasting on your yard or garden. When Mom said to eat your greens, she wasn’t talking to that raccoon in the backyard. Yet he seems to have gotten the message. Many Bergen County homeowners—especially those with woodsy properties, and especially in summer—face unwanted visitors such as raccoons, rabbits, deer, slugs and Japanese beetles. Some of them lunch on your garden plants and flowers; others dig tunnels into your manicured lawn. So, what to do? • Try coyote pee. Chain stores such as Lowe’s and The Home Depot sell inexpensive organic repellents specific to different species, products that won’t harm animals or plants. Some are made of coyote urine, as your unwanted visitors will steer clear if they smell a predator, and others contain repulsive-to-animals ingredients like garlic or spices. Just spritz them on your vegetation to deter the creatures from chomping (or even approaching). One caveat: You’ll need to reapply repellent after a rainstorm, as moisture washes the stuff away. • Get hairy plants. Speaking of vegetation, most unwanted animals steer clear of foliage that is prickly, pungent-smelling or “hairy,” so you may wish to introduce some fauna that they find a turn-off. Azalea, boxwood, lamb’s ear, peony and marigolds are all unappealing to rabbits, while deer are deterred by bleeding hearts, daffodils and hyssop, and beetles avoid magnolia, dogwood and red maple. • Fence it. Another (albeit more expensive and involved) solution is to put up a fence around your property. If deer are your issue—they’re numerous here in Jersey—it’s best to install an electric fence that’s at least 8 feet tall, as deer can easily leap over lower fences. A professional fence contractor can install one for you, whether you’d prefer it be solar-powered or plug-in.

BERG.0619.pests.indd 61

More worried about rabbits and groundhogs? A smaller fence made of chicken wire installed just around the perimeter of your garden or flowerbed may do the trick. This should be about 3 feet above the ground and buried to a depth of 6 inches, to prevent critters from burrowing in. Or consider a cloche of chicken wire, which can be placed over a plant you particularly wish to protect. • Keep your lawn tidy. Need another motivation to do yard chores regularly? Remember that rabbits love to find hiding places in overgrown shrubs and bushes. And maintaining a relatively dry and sunny garden discourages slugs, which feed off shady, moist areas such as those on wooden planks or under flower pots. Regular lawn maintenance, either DIY or done by a professional landscaper, helps to guard against animal interlopers. • Install a sprinkler. The pelting, three-second spurts of water from an automatic sprinkler system will scare away deer, raccoons, rabbit and geese, and you’ll get a lush, green yard in the process. • If all else fails, try trapping. Havahart, available at The Home Depot, Lowe’s and True Value in Westwood, makes traps that aren’t harmful to animals, and the stores can advise you on how to use them safely. You may even be able to borrow a trap from a local shelter or the Humane Society of Bergen County in Lyndhurst. If you have a dog or an outdoor cat, you’ve probably already found that your pet’s presence in your lawn or garden helps ward off potential pests. There are myriad other strategies for keeping munching invaders at bay. To choose the right one, it obviously helps to pinpoint the species that’s giving you trouble. With a bit of patience and research, you can find a way to reclaim your outdoor spaces so you can plant flowers and host alfresco dinner parties once again.

CHANNELING A PITCHER
River Vale’s Jack Curry, a writerturned-TV host, put in extra innings to pen a book with the unusually candid ex-Yankee David Cone. By Darius Amos
Jack Curry knows about making the perfect pitch. The 54-year-old River Vale resident spent a good portion of his professional career tossing story ideas to editors at The New York Times—along with serving as the newspaper’s New York Yankees beat reporter. These days he delivers everything a Bronx Bombers fan needs to know on the Yankees pre- and post-game shows on the YES network. And on top of the full broadcast schedule, Curry just released his second book, Full Count: The Education of a Pitcher, a memoir he co-wrote with former Yankee and current YES colleague David Cone. Curry spoke with BERGEN about the new book, his own long-ago baseball dreams and what it’s like to cover the Yanks.

How did you and David Cone get together for the book? I always wanted to write a book that crawls inside the head of a pitcher. But to do that, I needed to pick a guy who was willing to share his thoughts—and we’re talking more than the X’s and O’s of the game. I’ve known David for about 25 years, going back to my days at the Times. When you watched him pitch, you almost saw the wheels turning in his head. We had a strong relationship then and have one now at YES, so when I made my pitch to him he was totally on board. Did your prior relationship with Cone help? If you told me to write another book tomorrow, it would be a long process. But for this one, when David started to tell a story, I knew many of the people involved and in many cases already knew some of the background. If it takes 100 steps to write a book, David and I were starting at No. 50. Having that familiarity made life easier. How long did it take to write the book? Three to four years total, but there were a couple of down periods. I liked the pace, though; I would work 135 games a year from our Connecticut studio, some ending in the wee hours of the morning, then go home to River Vale and try to write. Sometimes your brain is mush, other times you’re on a roll. We did a lot of interviews with players—I even did interviews with David and other guys while my wife, Pamela, and I were on vacation in the Caribbean. [Laughs.] That didn’t go so well with her at the time, but when I look back there’s actually some comfort and reward seeing how we got here. What was Cone’s reaction when the book was completed? We collaborated along the way, so he would always say things such as, “I like the way things are going.” He eventually did the audio for the book, and after reading it he sent me a text congratulating me on a good job. That’s what any co-author wants to hear. How did this one differ from the book you wrote with Derek Jeter? Derek was 25 when we did his book [The Life You Imagine], and David is 56. They were at different points in their lives. David’s been retired and has already reflected on his career. Essentially, he had more material to mine. Not that Derek wasn’t good, but he was far from done with his career when we did his book. What’s next? I was an avid runner. I completed the New York City Marathon in 2004 and the New
Jersey Marathon in 2008. I always said my gift to myself when I finished this book was to train for another marathon; however, my knees probably won’t allow it. I still love running along Rivervale Road, so I have something shorter—a half-marathon—in the back of my mind. Speaking of River Vale, how’d you end up in Bergen County? My wife is originally from Pearl River, N.Y., and I was from Jersey City, so we wanted to find some place in the middle. Well, “middle” is relative because we fell in love with River Vale, which is much closer to her family. It’s a comfortable, safe town that’s quiet and in close proximity to work. We’ve been here for 27 years. I admit, however, that I don’t take advantage of all the golf courses here, and I go to Ronnie’s in Hillsdale for bagels. And the area’s a hotbed for sports journalists. Mike Vaccaro [of the New York Post] lives in Hillsdale, and Bob Klapisch [of The New York Times] is in Westwood. And it’s interesting because [ESPN’s] Ian O’Connor and I started at The Star-Ledger on the same day. He also lives in River Vale, and he’s my brotherin-law. It’s neat to have friends in the business who have commonalities and who you can go have a beer with.
Tell us about your most glorious moment at Hudson Catholic. I actually had a game-winning hit, a twoout single over third base in the bottom of the seventh, against our biggest rival, St. Peter’s Prep, during my senior year in a game at Pershing Field. We didn’t have a great season, but I will always remember that game, which we won 6-5. After graduation, you eventually landed the job covering the Yankees for the Times. How did it feel going into the team’s clubhouse for the first time? There was a lot of excitement and nervousness. I got a little star-struck, then quickly remembered I had a job to do. Your feelings of being a fan have to vanish immediately.
Then you joined YES in 2010. What’s the difference between reporting for print and TV? I thought it was going to be a tricky transition to televiRiver Vale’s Jack Curry co-wrote Full Count: The sion, but I found Education of a Pitcher with former New York Yankees the feeling that I player David Cone. That’s when I realized putting in all the time for practice wasn’t worth it because I would’ve only been a back-up player. So I started looking at other options, including journalism.

3 HIKES YOU’LL LIKE Even wilderness novices can enjoy the great outdoors if they choose the right trek. Try this trio! By Daria Meoli
The joys of the outdoors aren’t just for hardcore survivalists and rugged veteran campers. Even city slickers can appreciate nature’s majestic scenery and serenity by meandering down a hiking trail. So if your travel plans this summer take you anywhere near Maine, Michigan or Georgia, think about packing some hiking boots and adding to your itinerary one of these three very special trails with inspiring vistas or if you are staying close to home, consider a day trek at one of the local parks mentioned on page 47. You’ll be taking the advice of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who counseled: “Never lose an opportunity to see something beautiful.”

CADILLAC MOUNTAIN SUMMIT LOOP
Bar Harbor, Maine Difficulty: Easy to Moderate Looking to immerse yourself in quintessential New England wilderness—but stay close enough to town to be back for Happy Hour? A visit to Maine’s Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is sure to please. The mountain’s summit is the highest peak within 25 miles of the North Atlantic seaboard and has one of the earliest sunrises in the U.S., making this a popular pre-dawn adventure. On clear days, you can see Mount Katahdin to the north and Nova Scotia to the east as well as views of Acadia’s forests, glacial lakes and harbors and the Porcupine Islands. There are dozens of hiking trails to choose from to reach the summit, encompassing a variety of difficulty levels—the easiest being the paved Cadillac Mountain Summit Loop. This route is both kid- and dog-friendly, and there is a gift shop that also sells refreshments, with restrooms and water fountains at the summit. For those looking for more of a challenge, the 7.5-mile South Ridge Trail winds through blooming fields of wildflowers, forested patches and exposed granite walls with a perfect spot for a respite at picturesque Featherbed pond.
MACKINAC ISLAND OUTER LOOP
Mackinac Island, Michigan Difficulty: Easy to Moderate Located in Lake Huron at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac lies an island known for dramatic limestone bluffs, coastal charm and a quaint village that time seems to have forgotten. Because cars and trucks are strictly prohibited anywhere in Mackinac, technically the entire island can be considered a hike. With 82 miles of dedicated parkland and 70 miles of trails, there are many routes to choose from; however, some are more popular with cyclists and horseback riders. The Outer Loop is one of the best ways to soak in all the natural splendor of this Midwestern oasis while on foot. This family-friendly trek is long—8 miles—but the terrain is undemanding, and it will take you around the perimeter of the island with views of beaches, crystal-blue lake waters, picturesque harbors and Arch Rock, the iconic 50-foot-wide natural limestone arch that rises 145 feet above Lake Huron. More serious hikers will want to check out Tranquil Bluff Trail, Mackinac’s longest and most challenging trail. It is a bit rugged and steep and gets close to the cliff’s edge, but the reward is an amazing view of the lake far below. Along the way you can break off the trail into the surrounding forest and find points of interest including Eagle Point Cave.

PROVIDENCE CANYON TRAILS
Lumpkin, Georgia Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult Who knew there was a “Little Grand Canyon” in the Southeast? Located about 150 miles southwest of Atlanta, Providence Canyon is a 1,103-acre outdoor recreation area that encompasses 16 canyons. On the hike you’ll see waves of sculpted sandstone canyons and cliffs in a spectrum of rock colors—red, white, purple, pink and orange—as well as vibrant patches of evergreen forest. If you’re lucky, you’ll come across the orange-to-red plumleaf azalea, said to be the rarest azalea in the Eastern United States. It grows exclusively in this region and blooms in July and August, long after most azaleas have lost their luster. There are several trails to choose from, based on your experience level—from the 2.5-mile canyon loop trail that gives a nice, leisurely taste of the formations to a 7-mile loop that offers more options for hiking and camping as well as access to the canyon floor.

{ TASTES }
FIORELLI WITH PRAWNS AND TOMATOES Yields: 4 servings
INGREDIENTS
n1 Tbs. olive oil n 3 garlic cloves, sliced n 14 oz. can San Marzano plum tomatoes n 11¼ oz. fiorelli pasta n 12 oz. raw tiger prawns, shelled n 2-3 Tbs. butter n ¼ oz. basil leaves, to garnish n salt and pepper, to taste
DIRECTIONS
Heat a large, deep frying pan over medium heat, add the oil and garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden. Break up the plum tomatoes with your hands and add to the garlic. Stir and simmer for 10 minutes, then season with salt and pepper. Meanwhile, bring a saucepan of water to a boil, add salt and cook the pasta for 9-10 minutes, or until al dente. Drain, reserving some of the cooking water. Add the prawns to the sauce and cook for 3 minutes, then toss in the pasta, adding a little of the pasta water to loosen if needed. Finish by stirring in the butter, coating every tube. Serve in bowls, garnished with the basil.
Tomatoes provide lycopene, a cancerfighting antioxidant, along with vitamin C. By cooking the tomatoes in olive oil, a healthy source of fat, the fat-soluble vitamin K is more readily absorbed. Meanwhile, shrimp provide omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for heart health.”

Peas on Earth
{ POWER FOOD }
They bring good nutrition to all.
For some, the mention of peas may conjure memories of boiled, buttery green mush or an accessory to a canned soup– based casserole. But if you can look past the culinary atrocities of yore, you’ll discover that there’s flavor and crispy, crunchy freshness to be found in these green legumes, the harvest of which marks the start of New Jersey’s summer. Three varieties most commonly grown here are garden (also called English or sweet) peas, snow (or sugar) peas and snap peas, according to the state’s Department of Agriculture. All three are available from mid-May to early July. POWER UP The different varieties vary in nutritional content, mainly because snow and snap peas are eaten whole, while garden peas are shelled. The pod has less nutritional content than the pea, so garden peas are richer in vitamins and minerals. A ½-cup serving of garden peas has about 60 calories, four grams of protein and four grams of fiber. It also delivers 29 milligrams (33 percent of the recommended daily value, or DV) of immuneboosting vitamin C and 18 mg (22 percent DV) of vitamin K, which benefits the blood. It’s rich in B vitamins thiamin (2 mg or 13 percent DV) and folate (47 micrograms or 12 percent DV), both of which are good for heart health, and niacin (1.5 mg or 7.5 percent DV), which helps the body convert food to energy. The same serving of podded peas (½ cup equals about 10 pods) has only 13 calories but fewer benefits: 1 gram of protein, 1 gram of fat and less than 10 mg of vitamins C and K. BUY/STORE/SERVE Many New Jersey farms allow visitors to pick their own peas, but for those on the go, all three varieties are sold at farm stands and grocery stores. Look for bright, crisp pods with no browning or wilting. Store them unshelled—peas should be refrigerated in a perforated plastic bag, according to Jersey Fresh, a state promotional and quality grading program. If you don’t plan to use them within
three to five days, peas can be frozen. When preparing, simply break off the end and drag the string-like attachment across the top for an “unzip” effect. Snow and snap peas can be consumed at this point. When working with the garden variety, pry open the pod, revealing a line of peas inside. Discard the pod and prepare. Peas have a delicate, fresh flavor, so they are best celebrated through simplicity. Resist the urge to boil and butter them—instead, cook them to a gentle al dente and toss them with fresh herbs, such as mint, marjoram or rosemary. Serve them raw or steamed in a salad, mix them into a spring risotto or, for a little indulgence, roast them with bacon or pancetta. DID YOU KNOW? Your seventh-grade science teacher has peas to thank for her lesson plans. In the mid-19th century, Austrian-Czech researcher Gregor Johann Mendel experimented with growing garden peas to discover how humans inherit certain traits through recessive and dominant genes. —Liz Donovan
PEAS DE RÉSISTANCE? Literature’s most celebrated pea may be the one in a tale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, placed under 20 mattresses to test the snoozing sensitivity of a young woman who claimed to be a princess. Her morning complaint of a lump in her bed confirmed her royalty. BERGENMAG.COM

Some Like It Hot (And Sweet) As the weather warms up, this summertime cocktail will surely hit the spot.
SPICY WATERMELON SANGRIA INGREDIENTS
n 1 750 ml. bottle dry rosé n 1 cup watermelon juice n ½ cup brandy n ½ cup Grand Marnier n 2 cups club soda, plain or whatever flavor you’d like n 1½ cups watermelon balls n 1 pint strawberries, sliced n 1 giant handful fresh mint FOR THE RIM n 2 tsp. ancho chili powder + 1 Tbs. sugar, stirred together
INSTRUCTIONS
n To make the watermelon juice, take 4 cups fresh watermelon cubes and place them in the blender. Blend until they are pureed totally then strain the mixture over a glass. n Add all of the fruit to the bottom of a pitcher. Pour the wine, watermelon juice, brandy, Grand Marnier and club soda over top and stir. This tastes great when it sits in the fridge and marinates for a bit. To serve, rim a glass with a lime wedge and dip it in the ancho chili sugar. Add ice and some of the boozy fruit and pour the sangria over top.
You can easily turn this drink into a watermelon Fresca by swapping out the wine for tequila and adding fresh lime juice and a split of prosecco, which is a quarter of a regular 750 ml bottle of champagne.” —Howie Felixbrod, owner, Blue Moon Mexican Cafe, Englewood, Woodcliff Lake and Wyckoff

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
Green Fusion I’m a meat-and-potatoes guy, basically, but an omnivore who’ll order a steak over salad roughly 85 percent of the time. (That’s not scientific, but I made my point.) With that said, dining at a vegan/ vegetarian eatery isn’t common practice for me; however, given some recent dietary changes I figured I’d give one a try. I passed several places in downtown Ridgewood—a town where I enjoyed plenty of big, hearty and filling feasts—before reaching Green Fusion, which opened this spring in a spot formerly occupied by one of my favorite Indian restaurants. Oh, the meaty memories. After my friend and I pulled up our chairs to the white linen-covered table, we were pleasantly surprised by the selections on the menu. From the soups and salads to the entrées and pizzas, most of the offerings piqued our interest. The majority of the food would be light, we thought, so our game plan was to split a few dishes. We started with a pair of salads, the first featuring soft burrata cheese on a bed of peppery arugula and tomatoes with a drizzle of tangy vinegar. This was a nice complement to the ABC salad, which boasted fresh avocado, cherry tomatoes and refreshing mandarin slices. As predicted, we weren’t overwhelmed by the portion sizes, so a third starter was in order. While the tri-colored hummus and General Tso’s cauliflower were tempting, we went with the fusion flatbread. At press time, Green Fusion didn’t offer complimentary bread, so this perfectly charred flatbread topped with sweet sun-dried tomato, mushroom and arugula gave us a few carbs and held us over until our main dishes arrived. As we did with our appetizers, my friend and I ordered a trio of entrées to share. I’ve tried other incarnations of a Buddha bowl—though those always included some sort of meat—so I was curious about Green Fusion’s version. Served with rice (which can be swapped for quinoa), the bowl is filled with a colorful medley of chickpeas, veggies and grilled (and flavorful) tofu. In all honesty, I wasn’t missing meat at all! Photos of the Green Fusion lasagna grace the pages of the restaurant’s social media accounts so we had to try it. A surprisingly generous portion, the plate was picture-perfect, and the taste was just as good thanks to the layers of vegan pasta and creamy pureed greens. Even the tomato sauce, which was rich with onion flavor, got a thumbs up from my very picky friend. Choosing a third dish from the tempting menu proved difficult. I wanted either tandoori cauliflower steak or Manhattan masala tofu (both tips of the cap to the former Indian establishment that was once here), but we went with the cauliflower barbecue pizza. The crispy cauliflower crust was topped with palatable bite-size florets as well as
chickpeas, garlic aioli and barbecue sauce. This pizza didn’t need meaty toppings to make it delicious—much like the other dishes we tried. I didn’t leave Green Fusion thinking that I’d give up meat, but returning for the pleasant dining experience is something I’ll do in the near future. —Darius Amos Green Fusion, 22 Oak St., Ridgewood, 201.670.7502, greenfusionnj.com BERGENMAG.COM

FINANCIAL PLANNING IDEAS
A Unique Way to Handle a Highly Appreciated and Concentrated Stock Position LET’S ASSUME RMR HAS BEEN HIRED to complete a financial plan for a family who maintained a large and highly appreciated stock holding that was gifted to them many years prior. In this case the husband and wife were 55 years of age with a Net Worth of $3,500,000. The value of the stock was $2,000,000 with a cost basis of $200,000. Here we have a client with over 50% of their household Net Worth tied to the performance of one company. While concentrated investments can create wealth, they can also destroy it. These clients are in the home stretch of their retirement savings years and from our viewpoint, they have a major risk to their future. Our CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® Professionals, as part of a Financial Plan, may recommend utilizing a Charitable Reminder Unitrust (“CRUT”) to diversify the investment holdings, create a charitable deduction, and defer the payment of capital gains taxes. As an example, let’s assume the client gifted $500,000 of the appreciated stock to a CRUT with a joint life distribution of 5%. This is a complex strategy that does require considerable discussion, but the brass tacks are as follows: 1) The client has gifted $500,000 out of their estate and the remaining balance in the trust at their deaths would go to their stated charity. 2) The client receives an income stream of 5% of the trust’s holdings annually for their joint lifetime. That means income starting at $25,000 per year. 3) The client sells the $500,000 of stock inside the CRUT and defers the recognition of taxes on the sale. The investments are then diversified. 4) Client receives an income tax deduction of approximately $110,000 to offset other income which allows them to sell an additional $200,000 of stock without incurring additional taxation above what they would normally incur in a normal tax year.
Douglas Roth Co-Charmain of RMR Wealth Builders, Inc.
There is a lot more to this strategy then we can cover in such a short article. The end result for the client would be a reduction in this concentrated stock position of $700,000 which is a reduction of 35% and would reduce this holding to an overall concentration that is under 50% of their household net worth. Each family’s facts and circumstances are different and a strategy like this doesn’t work for everyone. Here at RMR, we pride ourselves on delivering a financial plan that encompasses creative solutions to help you reach your goals. Contact us today to see how we can help get you on track!

When Should You Consider Refinancing? HOME OWNERSHIP IS A LONG-TERM INVESTMENT toward your financial future. As you continue to pay down against your existing mortgage, equity can build greatly. Someone with seven to 10 years of homeownership can find many advantages. Here are a few signs it’s time to use your home to put money back in your pocket: You could cut your interest rate by a percentage point or more. Rates have been at historic lows for some time now, thanks mostly to measures the Federal Reserve took to help the country climb out of the late 2000s housing crisis. A low-rate environment won’t stay that way for long. If your mortgage is in the 5 to 7 percent range, it’s time to take advantage. Take a look at these examples: A 15-year, $150,000 mortgage at 5 percent interest will accrue about $63,600 in interest over the life of the loan. Compare that to
$50,000 in interest at 4 percent on the same home for nearly $14,000 in savings. That means you could lower your monthly payment too. Using that same $150,000 mortgage example, the monthly mortgage payment would drop from around $1,190 to $1,110 and put an extra $80 in your budget. You could take care of your other bills. You can use your home’s equity to pay off or consolidate other debt like an auto or personal loan, including a home equity line of credit (HELOC). Again, even one percentage point can make a difference in your monthly budget as well as the amount of interest you pay. When considering what mortgage options may be available, contact your existing mortgage provider or financial institution to help determine which option may be best for your personal needs.

AS A FULL-SERVICE COMMERCIAL BANK, fulfilling the financial needs of both business and individual customers, we are committed to investing and modernizing the Bank to remain distinctive in today’s evolving environment. From the beginning, we have been unique among American banks, founded on the Old Testament concept of stewardship. Stewardship comprises four basic tenets: ownership, responsibility, accountability and reward. We have been maintaining these ideals since our origin in 1985, particularly regarding “reward,” as we tithe, or share, 10% of our annual earnings to organizations that attend to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of others, locally and abroad. To date, we have given back over $11.2 million. We are devoted to being faithful stewards at each betterment and working further towards becoming the premier community bank in New Jersey.

“ I was peeking outside our window at home when I saw our dog Sunny jump onto the bench next to my son, Riggs, who had been there reading. Sunny loves to sit next to us, and he wouldn’t miss this chance. I quickly grabbed my camera to capture the moment of a boy and his dog—it only lasted a few seconds before they realized they were being photographed.” —Andreea Glenney, Andreea Glenney Photography, Harrington Park
