A DIFFERENT APPROACH to Health
Transforming Lives with Compassionate Care and Innovative Solutions
Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic’s journey from personal struggle to innovative healing for chronic pain and complicated conditions
When Empathy & Experience combine
In the realm of healthcare, where empathy often takes a backseat to efficiency, Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine stands out as a beacon of compassionate care and innovative solutions. Her practice, awarded the Gold Medal for Best Acupuncture in the 2022 Best of Essex Reader’s Choice Contest, solidifies its status as a community treasure and reflects not only professional success but also the profound impact she has had on her community.
Dr. Aleksandra’s approach to patient care is rooted in empathy and personal experience. Unlike doctors absorbed in technology during appointments, she takes the time to listen and understand her patients’ stories. Her own journey into Chinese Medicine began with a pivotal moment – witnessing her young children struggle with eczema and recurrent ear infections. Frustrated with conventional treatments, she discovered relief through acupuncture, prompting her to abandon a successful career in research and sales to pursue a doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine.
The Last Resort With The Best Results
Driven by the desire to improve the quality of life for the elderly, Dr. Aleksandra focuses on conditions like Peripheral Neuropathy, arthritis or chronic pain. Inspired by her aunt’s
suffering, she rejects the notion that age-related pain should be accepted without seeking solutions. Her dedication to developing treatment protocols for this condition and other chronic conditions such as migraines fibromyalgia, long Covid or post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) demonstrates a commitment to offering real options for care.
Dr. Aleksandra refers to her practice as “The Last Resort With The Best Results,” signifying her commitment to offering real solutions for patients who have exhausted other avenues. Her compassionate approach has garnered praise from patients who often describe her as the last person they consult but the first to truly help.
“I have a long personal history in complicated, difficult to understand conditions and understand how tragic it can all be if left untreated.
Yes, I have sat where my patients sit. I’ve experienced their pain and suffering on an intimate level. It’s why I practice the type of medicine I do and why I’ve made it my life’s mission to treat the untreatable” shares Dr. Aleksandra. These personal experiences allow her to deeply empathize with her patient’s wants and needs, and she finds joy in being able to tell her patients, “I can help you!”
Tailored Treatment Protocols:
“Understanding that Eastern Medicine excels where Western Medicine fails, I set forth to develop treatment protocols for all variations of Peripheral Neuropathy (including diabetic and chemotherapyinduced) and now have a 90% success rate in this once difficult to manage condition. I have designed similar treatment protocols for other complicated, chronic conditions including fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, post-shingles pain, and even
macular degeneration. While each patient plan is tailored specifically to the patient’s concern and goals, all of my treatments are based on a framework that’s over fourteen years in the making. In addition I am not opposed to more modern medical solutions. It’s in blending the timetested science of acupuncture with recent innovations in medicine that I find the best results. One of those advancements is ATP BioResonance Therapy™, originally developed by NASA, it aids nerves in regeneration by providing them the nutrients they need to repair and renew, very similar to what water does for a plant!”
Dr Aleksandra’s high success rate in treating Peripheral Neuropathy is a direct representation of just how thorough each treatment protocol is. Combining together traditional Eastern medical practices and modern innovations like ATP BioResonance Therapy™ provides an all around comprehensive system that will treat
difficult and complicated conditions at their root for long term relief. Although the protocols may differ from patient to patient, the main goal is clear - healing and compassionate care.
The Magic of Compassionate Care
Patient testimonials underscore the magic of compassionate care. Dr. Aleksandra’s empathetic approach has led to expressions of gratitude, with patients feeling seen and heard. Testimonials echo sentiments like, “She saved my life” and “It’s a miracle that she was able to treat my fibromyalgia.”
The success of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine extends beyond Dr. Aleksandra to her dedicated staff. Patients highlight the compassionate atmosphere created by the team, fostering a sense of comfort and camaraderie. “I surround myself with staff that embraces my compassionate approach to patient care. You can ask any one of my patients and they will tell you that their favorite part about Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine is my staff.”
“I just love everyone here,” shares Christine, who has been a patient of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine for almost six years. “The girls are always so kind, it’s like going to the doctor with my girlfriends.”
Dr Aleksandra and her staff specialize in treating chronic pain, complicated neurological conditions and autoimmune disease that leave other professionals scratching their heads. For more information, please visit www.SashaAcupuncture.com

Fashion Is Reborn
Every March issue of BERGEN is a celebration of rebirth. That is, of course, what spring is all about—and spring is almost here. Even in years when winter’s cold has been less than brutal, we relish the return of longer days, brighter mornings, warmer breezes, and here and there a touch of green that isn’t even related to an Irish saint. (Although he too is part of March—see page 19 for great pubs to party in on Saint Patrick’s Day.)
But this year brings a particularly strong feeling of rebirth—a rebirth of style, you might say—and I’m not alone in sensing it. On page 44, you’ll meet five owners of Bergen boutiques who explain what’s hot in women’s wear for this spring and summer. They tell of skirts and blazers, wide-legged denim and hyperfeminine appliqués and bows. “Athleisure” will always have its place, it seems, but that place isn’t everywhere. It’s clear that, once again, fashion need not apologize for being stylish.
If you think that’s peachy-keen, I’m with you. So is Carlstadt-based Pantone, which has declared “Peach Fuzz” its 2024 Color of the Year. On pages 50–51, you’ll see some of the things this hue can do. (A shoe from Jimmy Choo? Just to keep the rhyme going, you can find that too—on page 20.)
While there’s artistry in fashion and shoes, many strive for success in the lively arts. Broadway producer and Old Tappan resident Al Parinello explains on page 32 how he found his path to prominence as a show-biz entrepreneur. Some keys to success “can be learned by anyone,” he insists. One thing that surely underlies his own achievements is an openness to being awed by those special few artists who are truly superb at what they do. “I get all choked up when I witness great talent,” Parinello confesses.
I can never cover everything in an issue in one of these letters. And that’s just as well, so that surprises can be in store. But get ready to read how “justice delayed is justice denied”—right here in Bergen (page 40). And what to do about seasonal allergies (page 38). And how to prepare your child for the college application process (page 24). And how a once-judgmental sushi purist came to be a bit more tolerant of innovations—tasty ones at that! (Page 92.)
May your sense of your own special style be reborn as the weather warms. Enjoy this issue!

SPORTING LIFE
You don’t have to be a sports fan to get into the action of March Madness. Bergenites were captivated by last year’s college basketball tournament when Fairleigh Dickinson University made its historic run to the second round. You can catch all the action this year at Bergen sports bars, including:
Blue 42, 158 Market St., Elmwood Park, 201.773.0970. Though noted as a Green Bay Packers bar, this popular spot has plenty of screens so you can watch any team and any sport. The lengthy menu ensures you’ll always have a snack within reach.
Midland Brew House, 374 N. Midland Ave., Saddle Brook, 201.797.0070. With multiple levels, this restaurant and bar caters to all occasions, from gameday to date night. Look for specials throughout the season, or order cocktails, craft beers, burgers and more from their regular menu.
The Railyard Tavern, 14-26 Plaza Rd. N., Fair Lawn, 201.773.3372. This restaurant features elevated dining options like grilled salmon and pecan crusted chicken, but the menu also has traditional pub fare like sliders, chicken fingers and wings to pick at while watching a game.

OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTY.
WE’RE ALL A BIT IRISH
Never mind your real lineage; if you crave shepherd’s pie and a Guinness, you’re Irish enough this month, when even those who lack such ancestry are green with envy. Luckily, St. Patrick’s Day gives us all a chance to indulge, and Bergen has some of the area’s best Irish pubs:
ALWAYS A CELEBRATION
Ramsey’s The Shannon Rose draws crowds for everything from New Year’s Eve to trivia nights—and doesn’t skimp on St. Paddy’s. There’s music and special menu items, and the regular menu features an extensive apps selection and killer burgers.
• The Shannon Rose, 1200 Rte. 17, Ramsey, 201.962.7602; theshannonrose.com
FINNEGAN’S AWAKE
With its red-brick exterior and dark wood interior, PJ Finnegan’s in Westwood looks the part of an old-world pub, and the inside keeps up the theme. The sliced steak sandwich and red Reuben are local favorites, and you can pair one with a frosty Guinness (or one of many brews on tap here). Each year, to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, there’s also a new menu, which includes potato skins and corned beef and cabbage.

GOOD OLD GAELIC HOSPITALITY
For 35 years, MacMurphy’s in Ridgewood has been a go-to for many locals. Its daily offerings run the gamut, from shepherd’s pie to beef and Guinness stew. But keep an eye out for the special St. Patrick’s Day cocktails
as well as festive desserts and performances.

DOWN BY THE STATION
Named for its location tucked next to the train depot, Brady’s at the Station hangs Irish flags all year long. That sets up big expectations for March 17, but this place never disappoints. Whether it’s with a day-by-day countdown to the event or opening online orders to ensure that everyone gets their corned beef, Brady’s goes above and beyond.

CHEERS TO 50 YEARS!
Now in its 50th year, beloved Davey’s Irish Pub & Restaurant continues to be the go-to for locals and visitors alike. That’s because their year-round menu of Irish fare never disappoints. Think delicious Irish breakfast, bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie and more any day of the year. To wash down the snacks, try any of the dozens of beers on tap and in bottles. Slainte!

Find the fit. Your personalized shoe may look pretty, but it has to fit right as well. Jimmy Choo shoes come in all sizes, so select the one that fits best.
JIMMY CHOO, JUST FOR YOU
Highs and lows. Determine whether you want flats, 100-millimeter heels or something in between.
Select your style. Choose from more than 20 silhouettes, from sandals to classic pumps.
Few of us will ever walk the red carpet like Hollywood A-listers, but that doesn’t mean we can’t dress like them. Sometimes, however, finding the right pieces is a challenge, even at brand stores like Jimmy Choo, the iconic line of shoes, bags and accessories, which has a boutique in Hackensack’s The Shops at Riverside. So, what do stars like Cate Blanchett and Charlize Theron do when they can’t find the perfect pumps? They tell Jimmy Choo what they want. Through Jimmy’s made-to-order program, you too can design the bespoke heels of your dreams. Complete these easy steps at us.jimmychoo.com/en/made-to-order/
Make it yours. It’s your style, material and color—now it’s time to put your stamp on it. Have your name, date and personal message inscribed on the sole of the shoe. You can opt to leave it blank, but what fun is that?
Check the feel. Fabric, leather, crystal or glitter—whichever you choose will keep your feet comfy. Each material comes in a variety of colors—a satin finish, for instance, has a dozen different hues from which to choose.

BE KIND TO YOUR CLOTHES
Let’s be honest: We’ve all ignored “Dry Clean Only” labels at one time or another—but was it really safe to toss those shirts, skirts and dresses into the washer? You may have gotten away with it the first time, but don’t make it a habit. Why? Naturally, wear life will fluctuate with the weave and type of the fabric, abrasion, strains, perspiration and laundering procedures. However, when shirts, for example, are cared for properly, their quality can last up to two years or 35 to 50 cycles. Want to make your clothing last longer? Consider these tips:
• Pay attention to labels. Manufacturers provide handling labels (“Dry clean only”; “Machine washable”; “For best results, dry-clean”; “Hand-wash”; “Line-dry”; “Cool iron; gentle cycle”) to help you and your dry-cleaning professional choose the best course of action. Shrinkage, fading and texture change are just some of the changes that can occur when care instructions are not followed.
• Know your fabrics. Certain fabrics are not suitable for laundry and machine pressing. Different amounts of spandex or Lycra, for example, should be dry-cleaned and hand-pressed. Rayon, silk, linen, nylon polyester or polyester blends and other delicate fabrics should be dry-cleaned and hand-pressed to avoid damage. A quality dry cleaner also will suggest that bright colors and darks be dry-cleaned and hand-pressed to avoid shining or premature fading.
• Clean before storing. You’ll be switching out your wardrobe with the seasons in a few weeks, but don’t just toss a fall sweater or a wool coat into the back of your closet. Dry-cleaning your clothes before putting them away is essential to make sure they’re ready when you need them. That means you’ll have pieces that aren’t stained and don’t smell musty. Dry-cleaning your fall and winter garments before the warm season starts also eliminates the likelihood that bugs will be attracted to them.
• Take it in for repairs. Besides cleaning winter clothes before stashing them away, Forte recommends having damaged garments repaired. A hole in the underarm of your favorite wool sweater? Missing button on an overcoat? Imagine pulling out a jacket next fall and there’s a hole in the sleeve—this scenario could have easily been avoided if you had dropped it off at the dry cleaner before packing it up.
• Know when to starch. Avoid using starch on cotton shirts, as it will break down natural fabric weaves and shorten the item’s lifespan. If you still cannot live without starch, think about your shirts like a canvas. There are two types of starch used: synthetic and natural. Synthetic starch is like painting a canvas. Every time you synthetically starch, another coat is added. Look for a dry cleaner who uses “natural” starch so there is no buildup—the starch is removed with each wash. Just remember, continuous buildup of starch will roughen the fibers of your shirt—which will in turn shorten the shirt’s life.
GET READY FOR COLLEGE
The transition from high school to college is a huge step. And with admission requirements, testing and costs changing every year, you and your young scholar may need a little guidance and advice to get through the process. Here’s some good news: The Bergen County College Fair, scheduled from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, at Ramapo College, is your one-stop shop to ask questions and gather information. It’ll feature representatives from both four- and two-year colleges as well as technical and business schools. Before you attend, here are some things about the college process to keep in mind:
• When to begin looking? A good time to start thinking about college is sophomore year of high school, but don’t get overwhelmed. The U.S. Department of Education recommends 10th grade as the time to start researching colleges and discussing financial options and plans with your child. Consider attending college nights, or browse the internet for information on schools that may be appropriate choices. Talk to your child about meeting with his or her guidance counselor to discuss college requirements and resources the high school offers. This may also be the time to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) or the PreACT exam (a preparation test for the ACT).
• Which test to take? The dreaded question: Will your child take the SAT or ACT? Both tests’ scores are used for college admissions decisions and awarding merit-based scholarships, and most colleges do not prefer one exam over the other. The SAT and ACT focus on English,
PUPPY LOVE
Dog: Victor, a 6-year-old beagle mix
Owners: The Zuckerberg family in Woodcliff Lake
A “foster fail” is when you take an animal in with the intention of being a temporary placement, then end up as its forever home instead. If that’s a failure, it’s one the Zuckerberg family delights in. Originally meant to be a foster placement for Bonnies Animal Rescue Kingdom (BARK) in Paramus, Victor took only 24 hours to make it clear to them that he wasn’t leaving. “We were fully in love and knew that we had to keep him forever,” says Wendy Zuckerberg.
Victor’s favorite activities are sleeping and eating, but when he’s taking a break from those (which keep him very busy!), he roots for the University of Michigan, where his human “sister” went to college. He often dons accessories in the school’s colors, blue and maize yellow.

reading and math, but the latter exam also has a section of science questions, an optional essay and a shorter sitting time. The PSAT and PreACT tests can help students determine which exam will give them a better score, so they can put their energy into preparing for that one.
• What about the essay? The college essay offers a chance for students to introduce themselves to admissions officials beyond just grades and resumes.
What makes for a good one? Ridgewood college essay specialist Marisa Sandora Carr offers some tips. “Tell a story, but make sure to leave enough room for the reflection portion,” she says. “You need to make it clear what you learned or how you grew or changed as a result of your experience.” Carr also suggests that students think backward when they begin writing; in other words, they should consider what they want the admissions committee to think about them after reading the essay, and make sure that’s what comes across. “Admissions professionals read countless essays,” she says. “If there is something unique and memorable about you, write about it so that your essay stands out among all the others.”
• When to volunteer? Volunteer activity can boost a college application. The DOE suggests that volunteering be a lifelong venture, starting when a student is in middle school. Don’t fret, however, if your high schooler has yet to log any hours. It’s recommended that a student put in the most volunteer hours during the summers before and after the sophomore year. Students looking for volunteer opportunities can check with their guidance counselors, nonprofits like Bergen Volunteers or aggregator websites such as volunteermatch.org.
YOU’RE A CURIOUS SEW-AND-SEW
The 10-piece sewing kit you took to college came in handy, but if you’re an aspiring fashionista or someone who loves the idea of creating clothes, it’s time to graduate to the next level of skills and tools. Sure, you can learn from YouTube tutorials and online discussions, but nothing beats in-person instruction. Bergen Community College, through its Continuing Education and Workforce Development program, offers a pair of classes this spring for those who hope to learn to sew or to refresh their skills. Register for either of the following at bergen.edu/ce/.
• Sewing Essentials will teach basic hand-sewing techniques and sewing/overlock machine operations, as well as review the fundamentals of fabric grain, pattern layout, cutting, sewing, pressing and hand finishing. Saturdays, 9 a.m. to noon, March 23 to June 8. Fee: $450.
• Intermediate Sewing will build on essential sewing skills and teach new ones, including industrial sewing machine operation. Projects include a tailored shirt/blouse in a cotton or cotton-blend fabric. Saturdays, 1–4 p.m., April 6 to June 15. Fee: $450.

Old Tappan resident and Broadway producer Al Parinello reflects on success— including his own—and the discovery he’s proudest of. PHOTOGRAPHY BY
CHRIS MARKSBURYAre successful people just lucky? Sometimes, says Broadway producer Al Parinello. But more often, he contends, their achievement results from a systematic effort that can be learned. And the Old Tappan resident has learned much himself—from interviewing 3,000 notables, from helping a comedy immortal find his voice, from owning a radio station and producing rock concerts and musical shows. When he purchased the bankrupt Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, it was time to learn more.
Was buying the Surflight the culmination of a lifelong dream?
I owned a rock radio station at the Jersey Shore and produced alternative rock music concerts for the Atlantic City casinos. I received a call from the president of the Plaza Hotel in Atlantic City to discuss producing concerts there. At the hotel I saw several senior citizens playing slot machines. I knew this was not the audience who craved rock concerts. I suggested he should consider Broadway musicals. I had many talented friends who could assist me, and several suggested I call Surflight Theatre on LBI. I arranged a partnership agreement with Surflight, and that’s how I began
producing theater. I named the partnership “Broadway on the Boardwalk” and it ran for two years, featuring great musicals such as Footloose, Cabaret, Singin’ in the Rain, Jekyll & Hyde and 42nd Street, and attracting more than 500,000 patrons. With that experience, I produced the Broadway musical The People in the Picture, starring Donna Murphy, and the revival of the longest-running musical in the world, The Fantasticks Twenty years later, when Surflight was in bankruptcy, I purchased it. The past seven years as owner have been amazing. Owning Surflight is one of the greatest decisions I’ve ever made.
What did you do before becoming a producer?
My first job was with ABC television. I was excited about the evolution of cable TV and established myself as the point person bringing cable TV networks to satellite distribution for RCA Americom. I worked with HBO, Showtime, ESPN, Disney and CNN. I was then hired by Warner Communications and became the first employee building the networks Nickelodeon, The Movie Channel and MTV.
What’s your greatest career achievement?
As a college student in the early ’70s, I befriended a person of great talent and worked with him to develop his special brand of humor and musical taste. He was Andy Kaufman. I am honored and exceedingly proud to have been the first person to produce him on stage—and to pay him $5 for his talent! I also produced his one-man show, God. Andy went on to play the role of Latka on the hit TV series Taxi; he was featured on the premiere episode of NBC’s Saturday Night Live! and many times afterward. After his untimely passing at age 35, I was executive producer of the Andy Kaufman Comedy Award for ten years. The Paramount movie Man on the Moon was the story of Andy’s life, and Jim Carrey starred as Andy. I worked with Jim to assist him in his portrayal of Andy.
What challenges did you face after buying the theater?
Many items were stolen while it was closed, including all the audio equipment, furniture, props— even the expensive curtain. Doors were left open, and water damage was everywhere. A bank held the rights and negotiated hard to assure profits. But my offer was a good one and should have been accepted immediately. After months of negotiation and no movement on price, I had no choice but to offer a moratorium. I had scheduled months earlier to take my family to Anguilla for a much-needed vacation. I called the bank and told them that my offer would not change, and if they wanted to sell to me, they would have to do so within the next two weeks or I would no longer be interested. I needed to open the theater by June 2017 to sell enough tickets for the
upcoming season, or we couldn’t operate profitably. I also needed three months to make repairs, invest and rebuild. We left for vacation, and two days later, as my wife Anita and I were taking a long walk on the beach at Meads Bay, my phone rang, and my generous offer was accepted.
Do you commute from Old Tappan to LBI?
Anita and I are not in attendance full-time. We visit every week or two and spend half of the summer at our beach condo on Brigantine Island. We see all the rehearsals and each show, but after the rehearsals there is no need to be present for every performance. Surflight has 55 full-time employees, all of whom live on the premises for the entire season. Two buildings are dormitories with all the conveniences of home, and the ocean is only one block away for the actors and backstage personnel.
What were the most memorable shows you’ve had at Surflight, and who would you most like to see perform?
The show that blew me away is The Million Dollar Quartet. We have scheduled that show again this upcoming season. Although we schedule one opera night every season, I’d like to offer full-piece classical orchestrations. That is difficult, as the cost of a full orchestra is very high for a 450-seat theater.
How do people react when they hear what you do?
They often just want to know what it’s like to meet celebrities and hear stories of my experiences. That’s fine, but sometimes it becomes annoying because they think they hit a jackpot, and suddenly, out of nowhere, they want to tell me about friends or family members who want to be actors or who have poorly written manuscripts from 20 years ago that will be the next The Godfather if only I can get them to the right person. If they only knew how hard I work to make difficult things see the light of day!
What’s it like working with your wife?
My first attempt at a creative career was as cofounder of a coffee house in Hoboken, the Open Ear. As the word got out, people responded to the press we were getting. One day, a female friend attended and brought a friend with her. When they arrived, I was only looking at her friend, Anita. If there is any truth to the concept of “love at first sight,” I experienced it at that glorious moment. I fell in love with her face and her smile. I wanted her in my life and hoped she felt the same way. When I took her to The Fantasticks, she cried like I did. That said everything to me. It took five years, but we married when things were just right. We just celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. We have amazing respect for each other.
Where, besides Surflight, do you get your theater fix?
Prior to COVID, we attended Broadway shows on a regular basis. We recently saw Chazz Palminteri’s one-man, self-written, two-and-a-half-hour show, A Bronx Tale, at Ocean Casino, which was as good as a Broadway show. Just a few weeks ago, on Broadway, we saw Gutenberg! The Musical!, a two-man show starring Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells.
Your perfect day when you’re not at work?
Our daughter, Dana, and two granddaughters, 10 and 12, live in Ridgewood. Spending time with them and their many pets is the best part of our lives. Anita is a retired special ed teacher who is a wonderful chef and prepares amazing meals for friends and family. She is known for her delicious salads. We love traveling on river cruises through Europe and traveling to Anguilla in the off-season. And I’m writing my third book.
What’s it about?
The secrets of attaining personal and professional success. Before I owned my radio station, I created, produced and co-hosted a talk-radio show on New York’s WMCA called “Your Own Success.” The show was soon syndicated nationwide to over 200 markets. I interviewed more than 3,000 people, from famous actors to astronauts, about their own success stories. I learned much from those interviews. Success happens sometimes by chance or luck, but I’m convinced that most success is a commodity that can be learned by anyone. There are rules most people ignore. Repairing that problem is the focus of my latest book.
Any hobbies?
I spend lots of time reading, collecting firstedition autographed books and collecting classic vintage LP albums autographed by the artists. I have also collected a wide assortment of autographed original music sheets by famous writers and artists from the entertainment voices of the ’30s to the ’50s. I have fun riffing on my blues harp when everything else fails to get my attention.
How do you spend your time off-season?
Preparing for the next season. There are scripts to read, hundreds of telephone calls to make and lots of contracts to negotiate. Anita and I both truly hate snow, so we try to take trips to Florida and the Caribbean as time allows.
Have you ever been starstruck?
This happens to me often—I get all choked up when I witness great talent. Sinatra did it for me. Frankie Valli, Lady Gaga. And anyone who sings “The Impossible Dream” from Man of La Mancha fills my heart.

Nothing To Sneeze At
WHEN THE HIGH POLLEN COUNT HAS YOU REACHING FOR RELIEF, HERE’S WHAT WORKS—AND WHAT DOESN’T.
The onset of spring should be an exciting time. The days are longer, the snow is melting and we’re all looking forward to throwing open some windows and letting the air in. But for many Americans the warming trend of these days also means that seasonal allergies are on the march. According to the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America, as of 2021, 26 percent of adults and 19 percent of children had been diagnosed with seasonal allergies.
Coughing, sneezing, itchy and runny eyes, a tight chest, a sinus headache—these symptoms may seem mundane, but they can be debilitating when they become chronic. “The patients we see are sick,” says Leonard Silverstein, M.D., an allergist in Saddle River. “Their allergies are stopping them from going about their daily lives, and the medicine they’re picking up over the counter isn’t helping.”
Jeffrey Weiss, M.D., an allergist in Paramus, adds: “There is no ‘one size fits all’ for treating seasonal allergies. Treatment is based on the severity of one’s symptoms. Depending on how much of a negative impact those symptoms are having on someone’s quality of life, the level of his or her treatment changes.”
Looking for seasonal-allergy relief? BERGEN sat down with Dr. Silverstein and Dr. Weiss to discuss some facts, some common misconceptions and some advice on what works:
Can nasal irrigation help? Saline sprays or nasal irrigation, which you may know as a neti pot, can be a good immediate first step to make yourself feel better. It’s a way for you to flush out your sinuses at home, both to remove the irritating allergen and to soothe in the short term. “It definitely soothes the nasal tissues, which get inflamed,” says Dr. Silverstein. “It can also shrink those tissues and help the patient breathe. It’s always nice to remove the irritant, and that can remove the allergen from inside the nose itself. However, it is a low form of intervention.”
Is local honey an option? There’s some indication that eating honey, a popular at-home treatment, can
introduce pollen allergens into your system and help you build up an immunity to them over time. It’s not a bad theory; Dr. Weiss says that this treatment can “result in mild improvement in some patients.”
“Traditional allergy injections place the allergen under the skin,” Dr. Silverstein explains. “That’s called immunotherapy, and it is designed to teach a body that is overreacting to an allergen to ignore it instead. Local honey would be a form of oral immunotherapy, which is being used more in Europe than it is in the United States. It certainly can’t do any harm.”
Will increasing probiotics give relief? What about Vitamin C? Recent studies have suggested that a heathy microbiome in the intestinal tract can lower the risk of allergies in general. “Overall health is important, as probiotics help the microbiome in the intestinal tract,” says Dr. Weiss, though he adds that increasing these probiotics during the spring pollen season “will likely not diminish one’s symptoms.” He offers a similar answer about Vitamin C, which is known for its antiinflammatory effects, saying, “Vitamin C helps prevent inflammation, but it is not recommended by allergists as a specific treatment for seasonal allergies.”
Can you predict the allergy season? In this area, seasonal allergies are at their worst when the oak trees release their pollen. That’s why you and your family members (and maybe everyone you know) start having symptoms at the same time. It tends to be a two- or three-week period, often the last two weeks of April or the first two weeks of May, but the exact time and severity depend on the weather going on around it, which is what makes it so difficult to predict precisely. “The severity of the season is based on two factors,” says Dr. Silverstein. “One is the temperature when those oaks open up. The other is whether or not it’s raining. If it’s 80 degrees, that’s when you see a ‘pollen bomb.’ You walk outside and everything is green, you see it stuck to everything. If the temperature is cool and it’s raining, that’s good. The pollen levels go down. But if it’s dry and hot, that’s trouble.”
Though he has stopped trying to predict the severity of each allergy season, Dr. Silverstein encourages those with severe seasonal allergies to seek out a doctor in March, before the height of the season, and plan for it. Medications sometimes need adjusting for the peak of the season. “You can anticipate that symptoms are going to happen, and you can prepare people,” he says.
Is there a cure for seasonal allergies? Allergies are one of the most common chronic conditions in the United States, but Dr. Silverstein says there is hope for those looking to ditch their symptoms for good. Allergy shots (immunotherapy) are very appealing to people for this reason. “They are really quite effective,” says Silverstein. “They are curative. You see an improvement after two months of injections, and then you continue on them for three to five years. After that, you continue to see improvement even after you discontinue the shots.”
Dr. Weiss echoes that sentiment, adding that the shots “minimize or eliminate a patient’s need for other medications.” He adds that, above all, treatment for seasonal allergies should be the topic of a joint conversation and decision between a patient and his or her doctor. Not every treatment is right for every person.
More than anything, Dr. Silverstein stresses that patients don’t have to suffer. Some lifestyle changes can ease symptoms in the short term—for instance, staying inside and within air-conditioned environments during the height of pollen season, or taking frequent showers. There are long-term solutions as well, and the treatments currently available are effective. He also stresses that, if your allergies are making you wheeze, you should seek a medical professional right away.
“These problems are very treatable,” he says. “Sometimes, people try to be stoic about seasonal allergies, and they’ll just power through it and deal with their symptoms. Of course you can deal with your symptoms. But it’s very uncomfortable, and it truly isn’t necessary.”

LONG ROAD TO JUSTICE
A shortage of judges is making many Bergen residents wait extra years to get their day in court.
Imagine that you bought a house in Bergen County with a finished basement and a grassy backyard for your kids. Let’s say neither the seller nor his agent disclosed the fact that the house was prone to flooding—and after you moved in, a series of floods quickly devastated the basement and killed off the grass in the backyard, leaving you with a layer of mud. Now imagine that you hired a lawyer to try to get you the considerable sum you need to waterproof the house, but four years later, not only haven’t you had your day in court, you have no idea when that day might come.
That actual case and others like it represent the reality today in Bergen County, and indeed, throughout much of the state, for a vast number of civil litigants—those seeking legal redress for medical malpractice, personal injuries, intellectual property disputes and other noncriminal matters. There’s a larger-than-usual
BY LESLIE GARISTO PFAFFbacklog of cases thanks to the effects of COVID and a severe shortage of judges that’s been ongoing for the past four years. The situation has plunged litigants seeking financial compensation, a divorce, or the resolution of a child custody case or landlord/tenant dispute into a frustrating legal limbo.
WHY THE WAIT?
The first blow was the pandemic, during which New Jersey’s courts were initially shut down and then gradually reopened, creating a severe judicial backlog from which we haven’t yet recovered. But even after the courts reopened, hope of clearing that backlog was dimmed by an extreme shortage of judges. In Bergen and elsewhere, the shortage hit civil cases particularly hard, as judges were transferred from the civil courts to the criminal division. “The judiciary has put a priority on handling cases
involving incarcerated individuals, because individual freedoms are at stake,” explains Laura Sutnick, president-elect of the Bergen County Bar Association and a criminal attorney with the Hackensack firm of Sutnick & Sutnick. Bergen County’s full complement of judges is normally 41; in January of this year there were nine vacancies, all of them in the Civil Division.
The causes of the shortage are essentially twofold. One factor is simple attrition: Over the past several years, a relatively large number of judges in Bergen have retired, either for personal reasons or because they’ve reached the mandatory retirement age of 70. If those vacancies had been filled in a timely manner, we might be tackling the COVID backlog more efficiently. Unfortunately, the filling of those vacancies hasn’t been made a priority. In the early days of the pandemic, says Paul da Costa, a medical
malpractice and personal injury attorney with the Hackensack firm Snyder Sarno D’Aniello
Maceri & da Costa, “what you had was COVID almost masking the issue.” In other words, keeping the state running was, justifiably, more of a priority for the governor and the Legislature than appointing judges.
New Jersey is one of only eight states in which no judges are elected. Instead, judges for the so-called superior court—the judicial division in each county, including Bergen, that deals with criminal, civil and family law (also known as the trial court)—are nominated by the governor. After nomination, candidates must be confirmed by the Senate Judiciary Committee. Once they’ve been cleared by the committee, they must be confirmed by the full Senate. It’s a complicated process that’s complicated further by the unwritten rule of senatorial courtesy, which allows state senators to block a candidate from their own county without offering a reason.
Though the process is complex, it shouldn’t necessarily lead to a shortage of judges. Unfortunately, says Matthew Johnson, a family lawyer in Wyckoff with the firm Sherwood, Johnson & Poles, “the Legislature is not pushing enough judges through and getting them on the bench.” Sutnick offers a simple explanation for this: politics. In order to be nominated, candidates need first to be vetted by the state police and the Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee (JPAC), an arm of the New Jersey State Bar Association. “Getting those candidates vetted by the state police and JPAC and nominated by the governor takes time because the political process works its way through all those decisions,” she says.
JUSTICE DENIED
The shortage has had dire effects, especially on more complex civil cases, which can now take up to twice as long as they did before the shortage. “I used to tell my medical malpractice clients to figure on three to four years on average if their case ended up going to trial,” says da Costa. “Now I have to tell them it may be as much as five or six years or longer.” Johnson notes that, before the shortage, there were four judges in Bergen County working full time on matrimonial cases; at this writing there are effectively one-and-a-half—two individuals, one of whom works on matrimonial cases only half of the time. While virtually
every civil case is taking longer to be heard, more complex cases have been hit hardest, as simpler cases have been prioritized in an effort to reduce the number of cases overall.
Litigants are paying an emotional toll. Though the lawyers we spoke with for this article were hesitant to allow their clients to speak publicly about ongoing cases, they all acknowledged the terrible frustration those clients are feeling. Every civil case is emotionally fraught, as litigants, often angry and in psychic

(and sometimes physical) pain, wonder whether they’ll get the legal satisfaction they seek. Having to wait, often years, for a legal decision, and not knowing when that decision might come, only exacerbates that anger, pain and worry. “People go to the courthouse for really personal and important things in their lives—because they want to get divorced, because they want to figure out child custody, because they were hurt in an accident and they want to be compensated for the medical care their injuries have necessitated,” says Sutnick. “And these are things that impact people’s lives on a daily basis.”
Beyond the emotional damage, there are practical consequences as well: In order to avoid the wait, litigants may end up settling their cases for significantly less than they might receive through a trial. And cases suffer when memories and evidence are no longer fresh, underscoring the familiar legal maxim that “justice delayed is justice denied.”
LOOSENING THE LOGJAM
In May 2022, New Jersey’s chief justice, Stuart Rabner, issued a rare public warning about the effects of the judicial shortage: “For too many people who are unable to resolve their differences,” he said, “their lives are on indefinite hold.” His
words may have had an effect. On Dec. 11, 2023, the state Senate approved 11 nominations to the superior court, and in early January, as the legislative session neared its close, it confirmed nine more. For Bergen, that translates to one new judge, Thomas Sarlo, confirmed by both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the full Senate, and six more still to be confirmed, which would bring down the number of vacancies to four.
That doesn’t, of course, clear up the vacancies completely, nor does it guarantee that a similar shortage won’t occur in the future. Even if those final six are confirmed, the effects of the backlog aren’t likely to be fully resolved for years to come. And we’ll need to be vigilant, and perhaps address problems in the system, if we don’t want another severe judicial shortage in the future. One way to help remedy the problem, says William Strasser, president of the Bergen County Bar Association and principal in the Paramus law firm of Strasser & Associates, would be to change the mandatory retirement age for judges. “I think the legislature has to look to extend the retirement age, because we’re losing very experienced jurists who would be a real complement and benefit to the judicial system,” he says. While we were unable to speak directly with judges—those we contacted declined to be interviewed, citing ethical restrictions— Strasser notes that “some of them don’t want to retire at 70.” He’d like to see the retirement age extended to 72 or even 74.
It may be unrealistic to think that the nomination process can ever be entirely free of the politics that has bogged it down in the past. (In fact, the decision to nominate, rather than elect, judges in New Jersey sprang from a desire to limit political influence on the process.) But many in the legal profession have suggested that getting rid of senatorial courtesy would be one way to de-politicize judicial nominations and break the logjam in the process. With or without senatorial courtesy, members of the judicial community (and perhaps the public and the press as well) will need to put continued pressure on the governor and the legislature to move the process along, if we truly desire to avoid justice delayed—and thus denied.
Meanwhile, the homeowner whose basement and backyard were decimated by flooding continues to dread every forecast of rain as he waits for the court date that could get him the money he needs to waterproof his home. Until that happens, his only recourse, it seems, is to pray for a long drought.
Five local fashion mavens agree that style itself is finally back.
IT’S TIME TO DRESS AGAIN
This season, we are finished staying inside. Yes, really. On Friday night, pull on your best shoes and do your hair, because we are going out and we are going to look great doing it. Everyone seems to agree: the tides, and the trends, are turning in spring and summer 2024. Everything is getting a little more polished, in contrast with the past few years, when athleisure and sweat sets ruled the world. People are embracing getting dressed again, be it for the office, stepping out to dinner or just running a few errands. Spring is a time for new growth, including new styles, so this is a perfect opportunity to update your wardrobe.
Here, five Bergen County boutique owners share some of their favorite trends of the season and some advice on how to wear them:
THE TREND: LONG SKIRTS
“There are lots of skirts out there right now, specifically long skirts. They have a bohobeach vibe, and they’re great for a woman on the go. If she’s running around with her kids or running errands, she can make this look casual with a T-shirt, a jean jacket and flip-flops. You can wear a sneaker with it; you can pack it and bring it to the beach; you can toss a chunky cotton sweater over it—it’s very versatile. You can start wearing it early too. Add some cowboy boots and it’s perfect for early spring, and then you can wear it all through the summer.”
—Kristin Dahl, KD Boutique, Midland ParkTHE TREND: BLAZERS
“I’m seeing strong shoulders in jackets and blazers. Not quite the ’80s look, but strong. And you can always wear a blazer; everyone should have one in their wardrobe. They’re trendy right now—people are throwing them over more ‘naked’ looks, like crop tops and bra tops, which are both great for young people, but for any age group or body type a tailored blazer is going to look great on you. Style it down with jeans for dinner or style it up with a blouse for a wedding. It gives you a strong silhouette, and you always look dressed.”
—Marilyn Tolerico, Boutique 811, Franklin LakesTHE TREND: SUPER-FEMININE
“I’m noticing pieces with hyperfeminine vibes. Lots of light, pretty colors, floral appliqué and bows. The bows are being done on accessories like earrings, but also as details on clothing. I’ve seen a dress with crystal bows on the straps, for example, and a lot of designers are doing them as buttons. It might push you out of your comfort zone, but don’t be afraid of it. As long as you don’t go too over the top, it’s all very easy to wear.”
—Alina Leshiner, Suite 201, Ridgewood
THE TREND: WIDE-LEGGED DENIM
“Denim silhouettes that continue to be strong are wide legs, patch pockets and cargoes. These styles look best when paired with slimmer tops to balance out the wider legs. Blouses, slub knits and spring sweaters work perfectly! We are seeing a lot of short-sleeve or sleeveless sweater knits that complement any denim. They all coordinate beautifully with a great pair of crochet sneakers, ballet flats or slingback heels.”
—Sue Bahng, Ginger N’ Cream, Westwood
THE TREND: VINTAGE
“I’m seeing a mix of neutrals with pastels and florals, as well as lace. It’s all very delicate, almost vintage. Everything seems an updated older look, but silhouettes are different. We’re not getting the tiny bust areas and super-small sizing that you see in actual vintage clothes, or in styles from the ’90s. It means spring and summer this year have a wide range of options for different demographics— sizes, ages. I usually find that spring and summer trends are very geared toward the younger demographic, because everything is short and cropped. We aren’t seeing that this year.”
—Lara Henawi, Ludovica, WestwoodEverything’s Peachy
Add a warm glow to your daily attire with the soothing vibe of Pantone’s color of the year, Peach Fuzz.
There is something inherently tactile about the name. Peach Fuzz calls to mind the weight of a fruit in your hand, the crush of velvet, the smoothness of satin and silk. Remember walking through a department store with your mom and running your hands over the racks of clothes? The folks at Carlstadt-based Pantone do, and they want you to embody that warm memory and feeling of connection when you wear Peach Fuzz, the 2024 color of the year. The company, which develops color standards for fashion and product design, notes that Peach Fuzz invokes a “feeling of kindness and communicating a sharing.” notunderstated, glow—it’s modern vibe. It also ’80s (we’re Diana’s the ’90s green and be years). The popping up on red as well as trends in home Here are some incorporate Peach wardrobe to share the world.

LUXE TO LIVE IN
With bold color choices and custom accents, a designer’s work on an Upper Saddle River colonial proves that high style need not be stuffy.
Design by Jennifer Pacca Photography by Marco Ricca Text by Nayda RondonThe owner of this Upper Saddle River colonial reports that designer Jennifer Pacca “gave us practical, family-friendly rooms that were crisp, clean and uplifting.” That was Phase 1 of the redesign, including the family room (pictured), kitchen, media room, primary bedroom and office, completed from 2020 to 2022. (At this writing, Phase 2—foyer, library and two girls’ bedrooms—is almost complete.)
“Family-friendly luxe.” That’s how Jennifer Pacca of Jennifer Pacca Interiors in Wyckoff describes the aesthetics of a farmhouse-style Upper Saddle River colonial she designed for a married couple with two girls, ages 9 and 11. And the wife in the homeowning couple has a label for Pacca as well. She calls her “a wizard.”
The wife explains that in January 2021, when the couple moved into the 7,000-square-foot home—built in 2013 by the original owners—“the footprints were great, but we wanted to add our own custom details and built-ins to make it personal to us.
“I loved what Jennifer had done with my friend’s house, and after we met and talked, I felt I could totally trust her,” says this homeowner. “I was looking for someone to take the design reins, someone who’d see how things would all come together when I couldn’t.”
Presented with “a beautiful empty house in need of a designer’s touch to make it a home,” Pacca and her team did their thing, fashioning spaces that were “cozy, contemporary and colorful.”
Epitomizing livable luxury, the family room is fashionably homey. The well-placed large sectional sofa
This page: The family room’s existing fireplace was a natural focal point. Pacca upped the homey feel with two comfy Bernhardt Furniture armchairs, a Vanguard Furniture gray sectional sofa and a circular coffee table from Gabby Home. and two armchairs invite relaxed gatherings by the fire or TV watching. Light and easy to move, the Vanguard Furniture sofa-back table easily adapts into an eating station, equally suited for informal family snacking or party hosting, while the circular stools beneath provide extra seating/eating options. The dark maple wood accent wall contrasts with the floating shelves and cabinets painted in Benjamin Moore Manor Blue to create a striking focal point—and all of these pieces were custom built by Newark-based Costa Woodwork Design.
With a cheery blue area rug from G. Fried Flooring & Design, a snazzy-shaped center table, a sunny Iri Upholstery custom-cushioned bench and a pretty-in-gray Vanguard sofa, the media room exudes carefree charm. Located on the second floor, it also offered the homeowner the opportunity to safely dare. “I was scared of
using bold colors in our old home,” she says. “Here I was still scared but wanted to go for it. The media room was a perfect place to try pops of color. It’s a more private family zone, away from the main floor’s public entertaining spots, so if I didn’t love it, visitors would never see it.” She now considers this her favorite room.
“I loved that she let us go with hot pink, aqua, turquoise and the full gallery wall of art,” Pacca says.
Although no less appealing, the secondfloor home office offers a more sedate, sophisticated palette. It is elegantly efficient with its streamlined Tritter Feefer desk and executive chair from Moe’s Home Collection. The custom accent wall with floating shelves, the rich green-hued Weitzner wallcovering, the framed Leftbank Art pieces and the Hudson Valley Lighting spotlights team up for a
This page: “I’m obsessed with the gallery wall,” the designer says. “It’s so fun and daring. Not all clients would take the risk.” Opposite page: The designer missed no detail in playing up the media room’s pizzazz. Even the colors of the backgammon board pull from the bright Leftbank Art.
polished presentation that’s far from corporate cookie-cutter.
Time and again, the homeowner marveled at Pacca’s “superpower” to make perfect pairings out of seemingly clashing choices. “She’d be like, ‘This tan pillow for this gray chair,’” she says. “And I’d be like, ‘Really?’ I couldn’t envision some of her picks but she was always right. She’s also a wizard at knowing where to put bold pieces and when to keep it clean and simple.”
When the homeowner first saw a vibrant forest landscape in a gallery while on an out-of-state trip, she wasn’t sure if it would work within the existing concept for her in-theworks primary bedroom. So she sent a photo to Pacca, who deftly incorporated it into the room’s digital schematics and sent it back with a thumbs-up. “I didn’t have to imagine; I could actually see it,” says the wife, emboldened to make the on-the-spot purchase. Pacca turned the piece—now prominently adorning a wall of the bedroom— into an integral design inspiration, pulling from the landscape’s colors to enhance the room’s ambiance.
“Our home has a good aura,” the homeowner says. “It’s beautiful, elegant, homey, clean and bright. Perfect for us.”
Pasta Party
It’s always a celebration when you prepare dishes that are easy and delicious.
TASTES
ORECCHIETTE WITH SAUSAGE & BROCCOLI
Yields 4 servings
INGREDIENTS
n 7 oz. broccoli
n 7 oz. sweet sausage
n 2 Tbs. unsalted butter
n salt, to taste
n 1 lb. dried orecchiette
n 1/2 cup grated Parmigiano Reggiano
DIRECTIONS
Remove and discard the lower stems from the broccoli. Quarter the broccoli florets lengthwise if large.
Remove the casing from the sausage and break it up with your fingers. In a large skillet, melt the butter over mediumhigh heat. Brown the sausage meat, stirring frequently and breaking it up further with a fork if necessary.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and add the pasta. When the pasta is about halfway cooked but still fairly hard in the center, probably about 5 minutes in, add the broccoli and cook until both pasta and broccoli are cooked, about 5 additional minutes. Drain and add both to the skillet with the sausage. Toss over medium heat until combined, about 2 minutes. Divide the pasta among individual serving bowls and top with grated Parmigiano.
“Opting for olive oil over butter not only preserves the delicious flavor, but also introduces a heart-healthy fat to this recipe. You can also choose whole wheat orecchiette to increase your intake of wholesome grains, or gluten-free orecchiette to make it suitable for those with gluten sensitivities.”

TASTES
SPAGHETTI CARBONARA
Yields 4 servings
INGREDIENTS
n 2 Tbs. unsalted butter
n 1/2 cup diced pancetta
n 1 cup heavy cream
n 2 egg yolks
n 1 cup Parmigiano
Reggiano, grated
n salt, to taste
n 1 lb. thin spaghetti
n coarsely ground black pepper, to taste
n parsley sprigs, for garnish
DIRECTIONS
In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Sauté the pancetta until ithas rendered some of its fat, then add the cream. Remove from the heat.
In a bowl whisk the egg yolks, 1/2 of the cup Parmigiano and a generous amount of black pepper.
Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta until al dente.
Drain the pasta and add it to the skillet with pancetta. Toss for 1 minute over low heat. Remove from the heat and add the egg and cheese mixture. Toss to combine.
Divide the pasta among individual serving bowls, sprinkle on the remaining 1/2 cup Parmigiano and garnish with parsley.
“My family enjoys this dish tremendously, especially on a cold night. The eggs provide a valuable source of choline, a vital nutrient for brain function, mood and memory. I suggest balancing this dish with panseared salmon and roasted broccoli.”

TOP DOCTORS
BERGEN COUNTY IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST PROMINENT AND SOUGHT-AFTER PHYSICIANS IN THE COUNTRY.
To help you find the best of the best, across more than 60 specialties, BERGEN magazine commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of thousands of practicing and active physicians across the county. Doctors were asked to select peers whom they deem are the best within their practice areas and whom they would seek out for particular procedures.
All the final honorees were fact-checked with the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System. The highest vote getters within each specialty who are in good standing with the state are included here in the 2024 “Bergen County’s Top Doctors” list.
While not every outstanding area doctor is listed in the 2024 “Bergen County Top Doctors” list, we think you will find it to be a valuable resource in the future for all your physician needs.

MODERN ORTHOPAEDICS OF NEW JERSEY, LED BY TOP DOCTOR
PETER DENOBLE,MD, is a group of premier orthopedic surgeons specializing in all conditions of the upper and lower extremities. They approach orthopedic problems the “modern way,” by combining cuttingedge regenerative and surgical solutions with old-fashioned patientcentered care. Common conditions treated by the surgeons at Modern Orthopaedics include athletic injuries of the upper and lower extremities, shoulder dislocations, rotator cuff tears, complex wrist disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome, other nerve entrapments, and hip and knee arthritis.
In 2023, Modern Orthopaedics debuted its brand-new Paramus flagship locationon Route 17 North, located across from IKEA. The building was formerly the“Paramus Fabric Center,” a Bergen County landmark. Modern Orthopaedics has kept the “bones” of the building’s classic structure while creating a state-of-the-art medical facility with modern healthcare capabilities for 21st century musculoskeletal care. Other features of the facility include convenient ample parking with easy access from Route 17 and North Farview Avenue, and an on-site podcast studio for the “Beyond the Bones” hosted by Dr. DeNoble.
Modern Orthopaedics of New Jersey is proud to be the first orthopedic practice in Northern New Jersey to offer extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) and electromagnetic transduction therapy (EMTT) to their patients. ESWT and EMTT are non-invasive biologic treatments that harness the body’s natural healing potentials through growth factor and stem cell stimulation, leading to healing and pain relief. These treatments can help patients avoid or delay surgery, assist operative patients recover better and quicker after surgery, resolve pain from tendon conditions such as Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and rotator cuff tendonitis, and promote faster healing of bone fractures.
Double board-certified and an assistant professor at The HackensackMeridian School of Medicine, Dr. DeNoble is a renowned physician specializing in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. He is on staff at Hackensack University Medical Center, The Valley Hospital, Chilton Medical Center, St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, and The Hackensack Surgery Center. REPEATEDLY HONORED AS A PREMIERE CATARACT SURGEON AND EYE CARE PROVIDER, Dr. Scott Pomerantz has worked in Bergen County for over 25 years. With offices in Paramus and Franklin Lakes, he has been dedicated to providing his community and the surrounding areas with exceptional eye care. Dr. Pomerantz, his fellow associates and his Metro Eye Care staff provide state-of-the-art eye care in an environment that is uniquely warm and welcoming to all of their patients. No patient is treated as a number or fit into a particular mold.
A board-certified ophthalmologist and member of the Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Dr. Pomerantz is a top cataract surgeon in the area. As one of the first doctors in Bergen County to offer laser assisted cataract surgery, he provides a gentle, highly-customized cataract procedure with precision that cannot be achieved with traditional manual techniques, allowing for astigmatism correction with improved accuracy.
Metro Eye Care is constantly updating with the newest technology, such as advanced imaging technology that builds a 3D map of each eye,
tailoring treatment to that map, and enabling Dr. Pomerantz to create a customized treatment plan that matches the uniqueness of each eye. Dr. Pomerantz also utilizes a “dropless” cataract surgery, in which a combination of medications is inserted directly into the patient’s eye at the conclusion of the surgery. This is more effective, minimizes the necessary number of post-operative drops, is more convenient for the patients and significantly reduces out- of-pocket expenses.
Dr. Sejal Patel, a fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist and cataract refractive surgeon is the most recent addition to the practice. She also provides innovative treatment for dry eye disease and runs Metro Eye Care’s dry eye center. Dr. Patel joins Dr. Pomerantz, Dr. Seth Sachs, Dr. Thomas LoPresti and Dr. James Cindrario to round out the Metro Eye Care team. The doctors and staff at Metro Eye Care provide a patient- centered philosophy that is integral to its office.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
A Wide World Of Sushi
From simple dishes to sublime selections, there’s much to savor at Ridgewood’s Maru Sushi.
I used to judge a person’s sushi experience based on his or her order. For instance, if you’d ask for a roll filled with imitation crab or cream cheese I’d say, “You’re doing this wrong—that’s not real sushi.” I’d then suggest one of the house specials or something exotic like fresh hotate or uni.
That was decades ago, but today I beg to differ with the old me. Enjoying the widely popular Japanese dish isn’t always about choosing the most extravagant, daring or “authentic” delicacy. The experience has more to do with savoring the interplay of all flavors and fresh ingredients, from top-grade fish to locally sourced vegetables to sauces and condiments. If a restaurant offers a killer California roll that has caught your eye, go ahead and treat yourself!
That’s one of the reasons I noticed Maru Sushi. The restaurant, which opened this past winter in Ridgewood, provides a menu—and an experience—that caters to all sushi enthusiasts, including those who seek traditional Japanese offerings, foodies who desire innovative creations and diners who want to play it safe. (Cucumber roll? No problem!)
On a busy Saturday night, a friend and I toyed with the idea of sitting for the Maru Grand Omakase, a 21-course meal of the chef’s choice dishes, but it was unfortunately already booked. (It’s nearly $200 per person, so perhaps it was fortunate for my wallet!) Instead, we started with our typical routine of splitting two appetizers. The first was shrimp shumai, a serving of Cantonese-inspired dumplings with the garlic/sesame taste of Japanese gyoza. Each piece was bursting with flavor and perfectly steamed (fried shumai is an option), with the delicate dough wrapper retaining just the right amount of firmness so that the bites weren’t chewy.
For our second app, I insisted on spicy soft-shell crab—what I considered
MARU SUSHI, 94 N. Maple Ave., Ridgewood, 732.410.8023; marusushinj.coma complete 180, texture-wise, from shumai. This crispy starter featured breaded and deep-fried crab with an accompanying Korean-style hot chili sauce that was spicy enough to wake taste buds and yet not set them ablaze. Though I relished the pillowy nature of the shumai app, the delightful crunch of the soft-shell crab was a culinary sensation I wouldn’t mind having during every meal.
Maru’s kitchen prepares a slew of hot rice bowls (donburi), any of which I’m certain would’ve satisfied both me and my friend. The fresh-water eel and bulgogi bowls were tempting, but when it came time to order entrées I couldn’t take my mind off the selection of sushi rolls. On this night, two of Maru’s signature rolls called my name—and appealed to my love of two classic scifi monsters: the Godzilla roll (spicy tuna, avocado and pickled veggies topped with eel, seaweed and delightful cinnamon powder) and the King Kong roll (featuring seared tuna and salmon). The ingredients in each dish tasted as fresh as they come, and they had me daydreaming that the fish had been plucked from the sea that evening.
My friend, meanwhile, kept it simple: one yellowtail and one salmon roll. While I focused on my dinner, she reported that each of her pieces and the ingredients in them, from the fish to the seaweed and rice, were spot on. Based on everything else I tried that night, her report was easy to believe.
The only drawback of the meal for me—and it’s true every time I eat sushi—is that I loaded up on carbheavy rice. With no room left in our bellies, dessert wasn’t on either of our radars at the end of the meal. But that’s OK: Filling up on what you love and appreciate is truly the way sushi should be experienced.

“The beauty of the fresh snow sitting quietly on the trees caught my attention as I walked past a window at home. A few minutes later, the sun started to push through the thick clouds, making the view even more serene and spectacular. Whenever nature transforms our surroundings into a magical landscape, the change of scenery creates calm and a sense of wonder while also giving us pause.”
