IS SEDATION DENTISTRY RIGHT FOR ME? Many people avoid needed dental care out of fear. Now it is possible to get the care you have been avoiding in a relaxed and comfortable way. With sedation dentistry you will: • have fewer visits • be relaxed, but NOT asleep • have little or no memory of the actual dental treatment • take medication by mouth, NO IV, for your visits • accomplish the dental care and smile you desire If you would like to explore this method of dental care, please call us at 201-337-9496 and visit our website at
STRETCH YOURSELF OR STAY IN YOUR COMfort zone? That’s a choice we often face, and recently it faced Lisa Oz, wife of renowned heart surgeon and TV personality Mehmet Oz, M.D. She graciously invited Bergen Health & Life into her stucco, terra cotta-roofed Cliffside Park home for a chat you’ll read about on page 56. In tackling her new book about relationships, she explained, she went for the challenge—and she’s glad she did. For some of us, home itself can be a similar test of fortitude—and an opportunity to shine. Take the lovely rooms featured in our At Home story, page 40. Each was conceived by a different Bergen designer in the one place where their creativity can run free: their own homes. Just peering at the kitchen on page 45 alone—light and airy, chic but cozy— makes me imagine the divine meals I might concoct in such a space, or what convivial dinner parties I might throw. Having recently updated my own dining room, I can appreciate the work that went into the renovations shown in “Before & After,” page 46. One, once a blank slate, is now an elegant music salon; the other, formerly cluttered and without focus, now gracefully fuses living and dining areas into one soothing space. And the vibrant rooms in “The Color Spectrum,” page 50, are proof positive that I’m not alone in my quest to add splashy hues to almost any space. See for yourself what a difference it can make. While stretching yourself is great, there comes a time to reward yourself too. The rest of our pages feature indulgences we can all try whenever the whim strikes. In Gourmet, we detail a delicious Indian meal at Paramus’ stylish Mantra, while in Bergen Buzz, we profile a home design emporium that’s a bastion of imagination and inspiration, plus a Wyckoff spot where pizza becomes health food. We hope you enjoy these close-up looks at how your neighbors live, and cherish each moment of this Bergen spring.

“The better part of a year”—that’s how long Chris Saville says he and wife Kate spent in their kitchen before perfecting recipes for the tasty, healthier pizza alternatives they serve up at THE FLATZ COMPANY in Wyckoff (201-560-0150, www.theflatzco.com). Perhaps the key component in the ultra-thin, 12-inch pies is their crispy whole-wheat crust, made from all-natural flour. From there, customers can choose from 19 varieties, or build their own with toppings such as cherry peppers, white truffle oil and poached egg. A good place to start is the “Original” ($7.50); topped with mozzarella and homemade tomato sauce, it’s just 750 calories for the entire pie—less than half that of traditional pizza. More daring? Try the “Island Flat,” a combo of banana, organic coconut, pineapple, mozzarella and homemade tomato sauce. A bonus? All cups, salad containers and cutlery are biodegradable, and boxes are made from recycled materials. “The pizza is so good, and the fact that many ingredients are organic appeals to us,” says Kelly Van Calcar, a mother of four from Wyckoff. “My kids ask to eat there every day!”
Get a hearty dose of design inspiration—and perhaps a teensy bit of home envy—at the Junior Woman’s Club of Ridgewood’s 13th annual Spring House Tour (201-444-5705, www.jwcridgewood.com), which lets you roam through five stunning area homes (four in Ridgewood, one in Ho-Ho-Kus). The event takes place on Thursday, May 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and costs $40 per person; proceeds benefit 25 local charities. “Some of the homes have recently undergone major renovations,” says club president Bernadette Walsh, “and they all have a lot of character.” Take, for instance, the 10,000-plus-square-foot Ridgewood Colonial that features a chapel, a potting shed, gardens, terraces—and a family room painted as if you’re in a hot-air-balloon basket. It’s as if a huge home décor fantasyland dropped Visitors can tour the homes in any order; volunteers are on hand at each location to from the sky and landed beside Route 80. For the ECO-EPICURE
If you crave a heaping plate of chemicals, hormones and preservatives, pass right on by the GREEN DOOR CAFÉ in Tenafly (201-567-8226, www.greendoorcafenj.com). “We serve food the way nature intended— as naturally as possible,” says Leon Bell, co-owner of the year-old BYO. Dedicated to a “green” philosophy, the eatery’s menu of tasty, nutritious American fare features only organic or hormone- and antibioticfree proteins, plus organic or locally farmed produce. And don’t worry about sky-high costs: “We keep prices competitive with other casual restaurants,” says Bell. They don’t sacrifice flavor, either. “People like us not just because we offer ‘cleaner’ food, but because it tastes great too,” says Bell. At lunchtime try the all-natural turkey, beef and veggie burgers ($4.50 to $10.75) or the organic chicken salad sandwich ($6.95). For dinner, favorites include caramelized Berkshire pork chops with hot-and-sour cranberry compote, mashed sweet potatoes and sautéed kale ($23); and the citrusglazed Lock Duart salmon with lemon confit, black rice and sautéed kale ($21)—“our salmon isn’t farm-raised; it comes from 20 miles off the northern coast of Scotland,” says Bell.

FLASH IT WAS AN ELEGANT EVENING AT THE VENETIAN in Garfield as the Colleen Giblin Foundation hosted its 25th anniversary Humanitarian Casino Night, a blacktie–optional event featuring live music by Tuxedo Swing. The nonprofit group—named in honor of 4-year-old Colleen Giblin, who died of a brain tumor in 1985—will use the proceeds to fund children’s neurological and cancer research. At the Rockleigh Country Club in Rockleigh, meanwhile, Ramapo College Foundation held its 2010 Distinguished Citizens Award Dinner. The annual event raises funds for student scholarships, faculty research and other projects at Ramapo College. Finally, a festive time was had by all as the Franklin Lakes Education Foundation hosted its annual dinner-dance at Seasons in Washington Township, featuring live music by renowned cover band The Nerds.

ALLERGY-PROOF YOUR ENVIRONMENT • Wash that pollen out of your hair. Studies show that hair can be a magnet for pollen, which can rub off onto sheets and pillows at bedtime. To outsmart the cling, wash your hair before bed. • Keep windows closed. And don’t forget to keep car windows rolled up too, Dr. Miller adds. • Filter out the allergens. Using an air purifier and filter on your vacuum can help rid your home of allergens. And for the best protection, opt for a true HEPA model. Unlike “HEPA-type” filters, they are proven to remove up to 99 percent of airborne mold.

fight allergies.
• Nosh on nuts. Almonds, peanuts and cashews are high in magnesium, a mineral found to boost lung function and ease allergy symptoms. Studies show that low levels of magnesium raise the level of histamine, a chemical in the body that triggers allergic reactions. • Savor something spicy. Spicy foods help thin mucous secretions, easing a stuffy nose. Try cayenne pepper, ginger or garlic. Or opt for onions, which contain quercetin—an antioxidant that’s a natural antihistamine. • Sip green tea. An antioxidant in the tea known as EGCG blocks compounds in the body that produce an allergic response. Drink two or three cups a day. • Sweeten with local honey. Because the bees feed on pollen from local flowers, trace amounts of the allergen end up in the honey, and eating just a little bit can slowly build your body’s tolerance. In fact, an informal study at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans found that just 2 teaspoons daily for six weeks eased symptoms.

The regular injections can take four years to complete, but some relief is found within a few months. • Try the latest immunotherapy. Popular in Europe, sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) involves placing drops of the allergen under the tongue to build up tolerance. And it works in 85 percent of patients. “The main advantage is convenience, since the oral drops or tablets can be administered at home,” says Ira Finegold, M.D., clinical professor of medicine at Columbia University. “And it appears to be safer than conventional immunotherapy.” ■

KettleMANIA CHANNEL YOUR INNER STRONGMAN WITH KETTLEBELLS— OLD-SCHOOL WEIGHTS THAT YIELD BIG-TIME RESULTS
What they are
Swinging the kettlebell back through your legs and then up to eye level engages several different muscle groups.
Kettlebells are large hunks of cast iron, each with a thick handle. Perhaps the ultimate retro fitness rage, they were originally used by 18th-century Russian bodybuilders—and kitsch lovers may recognize them as the quintessential “old-time” weights seen in strongman photos of yore. Why the resurgence? In a nutshell: They’re effective and efficient. “You can get a great workout in just 20 minutes,” says personal trainer and certified kettlebell instructor Joe Walker, owner of Rethink Fitness in Franklin Lakes. “And since the moves combine cardio with strength training, you kill two birds with one stone.” Then there’s the fun factor: Many kettlebell exercises involve swinging the weights around your body—moves that are way more enjoyable than simply pounding the treadmill or curling a barbell.

Arms, abs, legs, glutes—and everything in between. “Kettlebells really provide a total-body exercise, toes to fingertips,” says Walker. “The exercises help you build a nice, strong core and lower back, which helps if you suffer from low-back pain.” Kettlebells can up the intensity of traditional strength-training moves

like curls or presses. That’s because, unlike with dumbbells and barbells, the weight is centered a few inches below the handle, making your body work harder to control it. But it’s not all about the brute force: Because the weights are so compact, you can swing them between your legs, over your head or around your torso. “You could never swing a barbell between your legs,” notes Walker, “and if you tried it with dumbbell, you’d likely smash your legs with it.” The result is a workout that combines strength, velocity, dexterity and concentration. “Because there’s so much PUT THE KETTLE ON ... going on, kettlebells help improve Local gyms offering kettlebell coordination and enhance flexiinstruction bility in your hips and shoulders,” Rethink Fitness, Franklin Lakes (201-891Walker adds. 0800, www.rethinkfitness.net): Offers 1-hour Wyckoff resident Brian group sessions ($35/class; $259 for one Ravettine, 40, takes 1-hour kettlemonth of classes, three days a week), and bell lessons twice a week, and has private 1-hour personal training sessions noticed significant results: “I just ($65 to $85/session) don’t have the time to spend two or The Gym, Englewood (201-567-9399, three hours in the gym,” he says. www.gettothegym.com), Montvale (201“Kettlebells give me a full-body 802-9399): Offers 1-hour kettlebell personal workout, and my core is so much training sessions ($70/session; $65/session stronger now. (Classes included in gym searchers from the University of membership fee; $15 for a day pass, $69 for Wisconsin, a typical kettlebell one-month membership, $49/month for workout can burn a whopping 20 one-year membership) calories per minute.
How to use ’em You can start slow with traditional strength-training moves like overhead presses and bent-over rows. But the real fun comes from swinging these babies around. Fittingly, a favorite move is the two-handed kettlebell swing: Stand about a foot behind the kettlebell with your
legs shoulder-width apart. Squat down a bit and grab the bell with both hands. Keeping your weight on your heels, abs tight and back straight, swing the weight backward between your legs past your hips, then stand up and swing it forward to eye level, driving your hips forward. Repeat 15 to 20 times. For the tactical lunge, stand up straight holding the kettlebell in your right hand. Take a step, placing your left leg back into a lunge position, then pass the weight between your legs to your left hand. Return to starting position and repeat on the opposite side, aiming for 10 reps. Other moves involve punching your arm overhead, letting the bell rotate around your wrist. Because proper form can be a tricky thing with kettlebells, it’s a good idea to seek out professional instruction to avoid injury. And as with any exercise, get your doctor’s OK before starting. ■

The great
salt
debate
CONFUSED BY THE CONFLICTING REPORTS ABOUT DIETARY SODIUM? OUR EXPERTS WEIGH IN TO SALT OR NOT TO SALT? IF YOU’VE been following the medical news this year, you know that this question has morphed into something of a contentious issue. The public conversation began in earnest in January, when New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced an effort to reduce the nation’s salt intake by 25 percent over the next five years. But soon after, an article in Journal of the American Medical Association called into question Bloomberg’s very argument that reducing sodium would help prevent heart attacks and stroke. The piece reported that a low-salt diet was associated with lower rates of disease and death in only five of 11 studies examined. The others found that people on low-salt diets fared either the same as or worse than those on unrestricted salt diets. But many experts were not swayed by these findings. “You can occasionally find studies that are not consistent, but the vast majority support the hypothesis that Americans eat too much salt and that increases our risk of disease and stroke,” says Marcus Williams, M.D., cardiol-

ogist with Cardiac Associates of North Jersey in Oakland and president of the Association of Black Cardiologists. “I’m strongly in favor of a lower-salt diet.” Two reports since then have bolstered Williams’ position: A New England Journal of Medicine study found that consuming 3 fewer grams of salt per day could cut the annual number of deaths by 44,000. And a study in Annals of Internal Medicine concluded that reducing sodium by 10 percent would prevent almost 500,000 heart attacks. “The more salt in blood vessels, the more fluid that is attracted in and the higher the blood pressure,” explains cardiologist William Tansey III, M.D., a member of the American Heart Association Founders Affiliate Board of Directors. What’s important to remember, adds Dr. Williams, is that up to 77 percent of dietary salt is “hidden” in processed foods. Thus, the best way to lower salt is simply to eat freshly prepared meals. ■

A PEEK INSIDE THE BERGEN ABODES OF 5 LOCAL PROS
You let them inside your home—but did you ever want to see what your designers create when they have no fussy clients to please?
Bergen Health & Life asked 5 local pros to reveal one room each in their homes—and to provide one take-home tip the rest of us can use when sprucing up our own abodes. Here’s what they showed us:
Meryl Stern, Haworth

What the picture does not reveal: Mixing old and new styles “The space has a loft-like floor plan, so the dining can make a space much more interesting.” room is open to an adjoining living room and atrium room,” says Stern, owner of Meryl Stern Interiors in Haworth. That means lots of space and light to counterbalance the dining room’s dark, rich wood. And about that wood—what appears to be a paneled wall is actually the reverse side of Stern’s kitchen cupboards. “Instead of putting up sheetrock, I just put paneling on the back of the cabinets themselves.” A modern twist comes from a custom-designed contemporary metal chandelier with linen shades from O’Lampia, which hangs above a classic cherry wood table and fruitwood chairs from Lucullus in New Orleans and a Ralph Lauren sisal rug. The room also offers convenience for Stern, who often hosts dinner parties and meetings. “The marble counter that the candelabras sit on is good for both serving and display, and the table can expand to fit 16 people,” she says.

“I wanted something timeless but fresh,” says designer Felicia Zwebner of Art de Triomphe in Teaneck, describing her Teaneck great room, done in a nature-inspired palette. “I have four young children who certainly don’t want to live in a museum, but I also try to stay away from trends.” Zwebner and her family can enjoy the space from two cream-colored English Knole sofas from Mason-Art in Manhattan, upholstered in Nancy Corzine Italian chenille. A brown tufted leather ottoman in the center functions as a coffee table and leg rest—“it’s great when you want to kick back and relax, and if there’s a stain I can just use a leather cleaner,” says the designer. Other soothing touches include a subtly striped Zoffany wallpaper, a fanciful woolen silk rug from Kravet and crewel pillows by Nancy Corzine.

Sharon L. Sherman, Wyckoff A vivid, contemporary dining space to display cherished mementos—that was designer Sharon L. Sherman’s vision for her Wyckoff dining room. “I wanted to use warm, rich colors and several pieces that were given to us or that we purchased while traveling,” says Sherman, owner of Thyme & Place Design in Wyckoff. Georgian Brick paint from Benjamin Moore creates a colorful backdrop to the space, which is anchored by a sleek cherry dining table and chairs—wedding gifts to the designer. A thin metal chandelier and sconce from Visual Comfort provide modern illumination. Among the room’s artwork is a collection of four paintings by Sherman’s late mother. “I put those there as a homage to her.” continued

“The power of color is the most important feature in any interior design,” says designer Blanka Jurecky of Blanka Jurecky Interiors in Englewood. Case in point: Her Englewood home’s formal living room, where bold red splashes steal the show. The daring palette was inspired by the wallpaper left by the previous homeowners. “Burgundy is my favorite color, so I decided to keep the paper and decorate the room around it,” says Jurecky. She balanced the space with neutral touches, including a Taylor King sofa upholstered in white chenille from Kravet and a glass-top table from Emerson et Cie. But the room’s key hue repeats itself in many furnishings, such as Glant silk window treatments from Interior Art & Design in Hackensack and a wooden chair and bench from Taylor King, each upholstered in a different red silk. A burl wood sideboard from Scott Thomas and decorative area rug from Nourison in Saddle Brook offer extra luxury.

Suzanne Curtis, Ho-Ho-Kus Tired of her Ho-Ho-Kus Colonial’s dated 1940s kitchen, designer Suzanne Curtis of Suzanne Curtis Interior Design in Ho-HoKus embarked on an ambitious renovation. The first step? Expand the space: Curtis knocked down part of a wall to create the quaint breakfast area, featuring a planked and distressed alder wood table from Fremarc Designs, wooden chairs upholstered in green chenille and animal-print cushions and a custom chandelier from 2nd Ave. Lighting. The designer also converted a screened-in porch into a peaceful seating nook, complete with comfy chairs upholstered in damask-pattern chenille. “It’s my husband’s favorite spot to sit, read and look out onto our backyard pond,” says Curtis. For the kitchen proper, the aesthetic was “European country.” And while it incorporates many new elements—such as diamond-patterned Amtico vinyl flooring and Cowtan & Tout valances with a fruit-and-plate design—Curtis also retained some original features. Rather than replace the old kitchen’s “utilitarian-looking” birch plywood cabinets, for instance, the designer updated them with molding, new hardware and a fresh faux finish. ■

GREAT ROOM, EDGEWATER BEFORE Yes, there was the overstuffed, unsightly bookcase. And the dining table stacked high with papers. But the real problem plaguing this Edgewater great room was its lack of focus: “The living and dining areas were both in one room—two individual spaces that really did not relate to each other,” says designer Maureen Fiori of Maureen Fiori LLC in Franklin Lakes. And while elegance was a priority, the couple— anticipating future grandchildren and visits by the “granddog”—also wanted the room to be child- and petfriendly, all while housing their prized chinaware and pieces of Swarovski crystal. To make it all happen, Fiori teamed up with designer and organizational specialist Debra Young of Debra Young Designs in Cliffside Park. Together, the pair embarked on what Fiori terms “a complete do-over.”
Before
MARISA PELLEGRINI
AFTER The first step in achieving the harmony Fiori sought was finding storage for all the sundry books, papers, plates and crystal that had been cluttering up the space. The solution was threefold. First came a custom floor-to-ceiling built-in wall unit, designed with input from Fiori, Young and pros from Ulrich Inc. of Ridgewood, who crafted the piece. The finished product functions as an entertainment center, storage space, filing cabinet and display area. An added bonus: “This piece adds a lot of architectural detail, of which there was very little in the room,” says Fiori. A pair of elegant walnut and bronze Baker chests, meanwhile, house the couple’s china. Fiori then unified the room by covering the floor with a single Sultanabad rug and choosing multifunctional pieces that could be used in both the dining and living areas—the dining chairs by Jessica Charles, for instance, can serve as extra seating in the living room, while a desk by Hickory Chair can augment the Ethan Allen dining table to accommodate larger gatherings. In the living room, a Kravet couch and Dapha chairs reflect the homeowners’ appreciation of classic pieces. And the whole space has been designed to withstand jubilant family get-togethers: “The fabrics and furnishings are extremely durable, and we had everything treated for additional stain-resistance.” continued BERGEN

Although their 9,000-square-foot Old Tappan home was newly built, the owners were less than happy with its less-than-memorable style. “We began with basically a
blank slate, says Englewood-based designer Maureen McMahon of Interiors, Designs by Maureen McMahon of the empty space she would transform into a sumptuous salon/music room. A built-in Ubatuba granitetopped bar proved to be neither functional nor attractive, while a plain mirror seemed to serve no purpose in its

perch above the fireplace. “It didn’t reflect anything!” says McMahon. Her goal was to set the tone of “luxurious but not overwhelming” that the owners sought throughout the first floor. “This is one of the first rooms you see upon entering the home, and they wanted it to have a striking, elegant appearance,” says McMahon. Another requirement: “They did not want neutrals—this is a couple who really appreciates color.”
AFTER
Before
Working closely with the homeowners, McMahon revamped the drab space into a salon in a style she calls “soft contemporary.” A palette of golds and reds—inspired by artwork previously owned by the family—gives the room a luxeyet-livable atmosphere. Striped silk window treatments by Duralee subtly echo the wall’s faux-painted horizontal stripes, while a striking Oriental carpet by Saxony provides a pop of color underfoot. “The wife really wanted the carpet, fabric and walls to be the statement pieces in the room— besides the piano,” McMahon notes. About that instrument: McMahon chose a Yamaha baby grand both for its grand visual statement and its functionality. “I told the couple, ‘The piano won’t just be a piece of furniture that looks lovely—you have children who can learn to play it.’” She was proved right: two of the couple’s three children are now taking lessons. Custom-built black lacquer cubes repeat the piano’s sleek style, while a variety of silk Arté fabrics have transformed the homeowners’ existing sofa and chair. Table lamps by Arteriors and glass sconces by Hempstead softly light the space. ■ BERGEN

Our own little man-made corners of the world can also benefit from startling swaths of vibrant hues. Sure, dressing a room in a brilliant shade can be a daring tact. But as these inspiring rooms reveal, when done to proper effect, this dazzling choice can engender grins aplenty—a reaction that would surely do Mr. Hunt (not to mention our old friend Roy G. Biv) proud.

LISA OZ, WIFE OF TV’S FAMOUS DOCTOR, STEPS OUT OF THE SHADOWS WITH A NEW BOOK ON RELATIONSHIPS
ho better than Cliffside Park resident Lisa Oz to “write the book” on relationships? Married for 25 years to heart surgeon and bestselling author Mehmet Oz, M.D., longtime Oprah regular and host of the nationally syndicated The Dr. Oz Show, she’s given him behindthe-scenes aid, helping to conceive his first TV program and offering guidance for the popular You series of books he co-wrote with Michael Roizen, M.D. Now it’s her turn to

help as she wins renown as the author of Us: Transforming Ourselves and the Relationships that Matter Most (Free Press). “Mehmet helped me figure out sound bites— what I can say and should say on TV,” Oz says. “Left to my own devices, I would just go on and on!” It’s a role switch many women can understand. For years Lisa has stood quietly in her husband’s shadow, raising their children (Daphne, Zoe, Arabella and Oliver) and serving as president of the family business, Oz Works. “Rather than put myself on the line, I found myself more and more supporting him in his work,” she says. “After awhile, I wasn’t really fulfilled by that.” But the path to fulfillment, she found, lay through struggle. “I’m a procrastinator, a lastminute-doer—or I don’t hand things in at all,” Oz admits. “Now I’ve learned that I can complete something, which was a huge revelation.” Writing a book on relationships, of course, means putting her own under some scrutiny, and she hasn’t pulled any punches: Things haven’t always been magical in the land of Oz. As her husband’s career got hot, she notes, so too did the marital spats, as Lisa often berated Mehmet for not spending enough time at home. “Finally, I realized that wasn’t what I was actually mad about,” she says. “I really needed to be more independent—I needed my own creative outlet.” The new author in the family is equally candid about the personal struggles she’s faced—with weight, for example, especially after her pregnancies. “Given my passion for food, the odds are pretty good that I will never be X-ray thin. And when I’m feeling fat, I’m more likely to be mean, snappish and insecure.” To counter this, she tries to eat well—she’s been vegetarian since her teens—and exercise regularly. “Of course, every time I travel, the kids stock up on potato chips!” says Oz. Still, she notes that two of her kids are “strict” vegetarians, while Daphne, the oldest, follows a mostly meatless diet. “But my son—he’ll get angry if he sees animals being hurt and then he’ll go out and eat ribs! I don’t get it. But he’s only 10, so I don’t want him to agree to something before he can fully understand what he’s committing to.” As for downtime, Oz admits there’s not much if it. “Mehmet always needs to be doing an activity, but he doesn’t like to go to movies, restaurants or hang out with friends, so there’s no social life!” she says. “So we do yoga

together, play tennis, ski. And we do stuff with the kids: We go to the museum or the farmer’s market in Union Square. We’ll also work together, brainstorming shows or future book ideas.” Much of this occurs in the stucco, terra cottaroofed Cliffside Park home the couple built seven years ago. The location has even inspired a possible new hobby: “I’m thinking of taking flying lessons—Teterboro is so close! I’m terrified of it. But it’s good for me to stretch.” Indeed, it’s been a year of stretching for Lisa Oz. “This book was like pulling teeth,” she admits. “But rising to the challenge, learning to just get out of my own way and get it done—it was good all the way around.” ■
Lisa Oz: A few of her favorite things HER FIVE SIBLINGS: “We’re so close you can’t play Pictionary with us, because I’ll draw a line and they’ll be like, ‘taxi cab!’” HER SPIRITUALITY: “I was raised Swedenborgian, and religion was always a big part of my life.” SU HEALTHY CUISINE IN EDGEWATER: “It’s a vegan restaurant and it’s unbelievable, so good!” KUNG FU: “The structure is good for me—I need that discipline.” AMAZON.COM: “I have a book addiction. Jeff Bezos and I are having a secret affair! Or we should be, anyway, with the amount of books I’m buying.”

You’ll be prepped for that festival of flavor thanks to the complimentary bowl of bhel—a variety of chaat made here with puffed rice, onion and a mysterious blend of spices— served for you to munch as you ponder the menu. All these treats could certainly spoil your appetite, so practice restraint. After all, you’ll want to order a bread basket, a bountiful array of the naan (we had the garlic kind), kulcha and paratha absolutely necessary for enjoying every last drop of the sauces. But fear not: This is not to say the preparations are in any way greasy, heavy or sodden, as can be the case with less skillfully prepared Indian cuisine. Norden, M.D. Norden Laser Eye Associates uses the Eye Q Laser, the fastest, most advanced correction technology in the world to perform Custom LASIK, a procedure that recognizes that each patient has different vision needs. According to Dr. Norden, the laser portion of the painless procedure actually only takes about four to five seconds for each eye.

“Why do I have ‘smoker’s lips’ when I don’t even smoke?” Vertical lines above the lips are certainly aggravated by smoking, but this is not the only cause of prominent wrinkles above your lips. Simple movement of the lips over the years and loss of elastic tissue and collagen can make this problem worse. Fortunately, there are some simple solutions. Injecting tiny amounts of Botox® in the area will weaken the muscles that act like a purse string. This can help prevent those lines from getting worse and help them to eventually fade. Fillers like Juvederm® can be injected under the lines to help push them out. These are effective but temporary solutions so they need to be repeated several times a year for the best results. A more long term solution is a laser procedure to “resurface” the skin. When performed with our state of art Smartskin® laser, this treatment is not as complicated as it sounds. In fact it is very simple and almost painless. We call it the “Omni Laser Kiss.” It softens, wrinkles, improves texture and stimulates collagen. This treatment is the best overall solution for “smoker’s lips” and it is also great for rejuvenating skin all over your face and neck. Call us today to schedule a free consultation with Dr. Song.

YWorkout with a Purpose Working out takes on a whole new meaning at the YWCA.
90 cents of every dollar you spend with us goes into programs that empower women, girls and families in our community. Like swim lessons for those with special needs. Self-esteem building programs for preteen girls. After school care and summer camp scholarships for underserved children. And the county’s only 24/7 Rape Crisis hotline.

Gingered carrot soup with crème fraîche
Eating
GINGERLY
Serves 6
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
41⁄2 cups vegetable stock
1
⁄4 cup extra virgin olive oil
⁄4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
11⁄2 pounds large carrots, peeled and thinly sliced
salt and freshly ground pepper
1 large onion, very thinly sliced 2 tablespoons finely grated fresh ginger
1
⁄4 cup crème fraîche or sour cream 1
2 tablespoons coarsely chopped cilantro
• In a medium soup pot, melt the butter in the olive oil. Add the sliced carrots, sliced onion and grated ginger. Cover and cook over moderately high heat for about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables just begin to soften. • Add the vegetable stock and nutmeg and season liberally with salt and pepper. Cover and cook the soup over moderate heat until the carrots and onions are very soft, about 10 minutes. • Puree the soup in batches in a blender, then

inflammation. Recent research has supported—and expanded on—these claims, crediting the spice’s high potassium and magnesium levels for its circulation-boosting effects and success in relieving cold and flu symptoms. Ginger is readily available year-round at your local supermarket—and don’t be daunted by its rough, knobby exterior. Look for roots with a spicy fragrance and smooth skin (wrinkling or cracking can mean dryness or age); the interior flesh should be firm and crisp. After using, wrap leftover ginger tightly in plastic wrap—it can be stored in the refrigerator for about three weeks, or frozen for up to three months. While a quick recipe search will yield many a tempting concoction (see recipe above), the fresh root is just as easily grated raw into salads and soups— letting you get your ginger in a snap! ■

ONCE UPON A TIME, IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE ale, bread and snaps. While ginger was revered as culinary gold in many cultures, here it was largely relegated to one bubbly beverage and a few beloved baked treats. But as the popularity of “Asian fusion” fare has surged in recent decades, so too has Americans’ love of this cuisine’s favorite spice. Piled in a zesty heap beside our sushi rolls; blended with sesame into a savory sauce; stir-fried with meat, veggies, garlic and shallots—we came to realize that just a small spoon of this piquant spice could transform an already-delish dish into something exotically enticing. First cultivated in Asia several millennia ago, ginger has also Although commonly been long revered as something of a referred to as a root, cure-all: Boiled into a tea or eaten ginger is actually raw, it has been used to treat condi- a rhizome, an underground stem tions ranging from nausea to joint
