We hold the key to

top-quality

healthcare.

Holy Name Medical Center was named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures, 2010, by the nation’s leading accrediting body for healthcare.

This year, Holy Name was the only hospital in Bergen County, and one of only 12 in New Jersey, that received the top performer recognition for heart attack, pneumonia and surgical care. Nationwide, Holy Name was in the top 14 percent of all Joint Commission–accredited hospitals to be recognized. So when it comes to top-quality care, now you know where to go. For more information, call 1-877-HOLY-NAME (1-877-465-9626) or visit holyname.org.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Is sedatIon dentIstry rIght For Me? Many people avoid needed dental care out of fear. now it is possible to get the care you have been avoiding in a relaxed and comfortable way. With sedation dentistry you will: • have fewer visits • be relaxed, but NOT asleep

We here at Bergen Health & Life know the importance of feeling good and leading a balanced life, and over the past year, we have guided your quest for the “good life” in Bergen County with authentic advice from local experts, including doctors and other healthcare practitioners. So with this issue, we set out to help you keep balance—in mind, body and spirit—through this stressful holiday season with practical advice and tips. You’ll learn how to avoid the five biggest health pitfalls this season (page 56), how to stay within your holiday budget (page 78), how to ward off the flu with winter’s “wonder pill” (page 28) and how to burn calories in the beautiful outdoors by snowshoeing (page 28). Our art director, Meredith McBride Kipp, along with New Jersey florist extraordinaire Anne Miller, shows you how to glam up your holiday decorating and delight your family and friends with her chic yet practical guide to setting the perfect holiday table (page 46). If you’ve run out of gift ideas already, see page 44 for “Our Favorite Things”—a gift guide featuring a little something for everyone, on every budget. Those looking for the perfect party attire will want to check out our fashion and jewelry pages for some great local finds. This holiday season, try to step away from the hustle and bustle and take time to share the true spirit of Christmas by giving to others—and not just under the tree. Whether you donate your time, talent or other gifts to those who are ill or less fortunate, it makes you feel good. For those of you who need scientific proof, research suggests there is a biochemical explanation for the positive emotions associated with doing good. And if you thrive on literary inspiration instead, heed the poet Maya Angelou, who said: “Among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.” Happy Holidays!

• have little or no memory of the actual dental treatment • take medication by mouth, NO IV, for your visits • accomplish the dental care and smile you desire If you would like to explore this method of dental care, please call us at 201-337-9496 and visit our website at

WHAT TO WEAR?

Congratulations to our fashion editor, Allison Anderson, who recently won the Neiman Marcus “Oh So Zoe” Interactive Challenge. Her designs, clever writing style and love for former Short Hills resident Rachel Zoe won her a trip to Beverly Hills to meet her idol—plus a $2,500 gift card. After Anderson got the good news, the next thing to run through her head was, “What am I going to wear?” Check out bergenhealthandlife.com to read all about Allison’s adventure and see more behind-the-scenes photos of her trip. Food Action based in Englewood. “The Center for Food Action is more than just a food bank. They not only fed 23,000 people last year, but also offer education programs, job training and other programs to help people get back on their feet – which is very important in today’s economy,” says David. The Vice President at Sharp Electronics Corporation is no stranger to public service—David is the recipient of numerous awards for his record of community leadership, exemplary volunteerism, and professional achievement and has served on a state task force, on the Board of a major industry organization, and on the Board of Governors at Ramapo College. The sense of community is integral to Sharp Electronics as well. The U.S. headquarters, also in Mahwah, participates in communitybased programs year round. As part of David’s award, they matched employee donations to The Center for Food Action dollar-for-dollar and made substantial product donations to the Golf Outing auction. “The Mahwah Chamber Board was very impressed with David’s passion about the Center for Food Action. We are grateful that he and Sharp Electronics are active participants in the community in so many ways,” says Susan Lord, President of the Mahwah Chamber of Commerce.

The KniTTy GriTTy Knitting can relieve stress, lower heart rate and blood pressure, ease muscle tension—and even help ward off dementia, studies show, but isn’t it hard to learn? Not according to Ann Marie Santarelli, owner of Yarn Diva & More in Hillsdale—it just takes time. “You’ll make mistakes, and it won’t happen overnight, but you can succeed,” says Santarelli, who adds that much depends on the project: “The coat I am working on now is very forgiving. It requires only a very basic stitch and simple patterns, but it doesn’t look simple in the end.” And though knitting can be somewhat addictive itself, it also helps break habits that are bad for you. “For someone who fidgets or has compulsive behaviors, the relaxing repetition of knitting can help,” says Santarelli. For even more warm and fuzzy feelings, use your knitting skills to help those in need. Check out knit-a-square.com, which makes blankets for AIDS orphans in Africa. Or, to help out closer to home, find organizations that will welcome your work by going to knittingforcharity. org and searching “New Jersey.”

LOCAL BUZZ DID YOU HE AR?

New Jersey just became the first state in the nation to require downhill skiers and snowboarders age 18 and under to wear helmets.

Atlas Elektra 923 snowshoes ($160) are available at REI.

IT’S SNOW EXCUSE

Don’t blame that powdery precipitation for hindering your winter workout—use it. “Snowshoeing is a fantastic way to extend your hiking season into the winter months,” says Laura Nulman of REI, an outdoor clothing and gear store that just opened a location at the Bergen Town Center in Paramus (201.226.1560, rei.com). “It’s inexpensive, accessible and easy to learn—and just like a good hike, snowshoeing is a great aerobic workout.” In fact, snowshoeing is estimated to burn about 45 percent more calories than walking or running when done at the same pace on the same terrain. Conveniently, REI members (cost to join: $20) can rent snowshoes for $20 the first day, $5 for each additional day. “Trekking poles, which are super helpful for keeping balance while snowshoeing, rent for $5 the first day and $2 for each additional day,” Nulman says. “But since they can be used the rest of the year for hiking as well, buying them may be the better investment.” For happy trails, Nulman recommends checking out beginner hiking routes at Ramapo Valley County Reservation, Ringwood State Park and Sterling Forest State Park. The REI Outdoor School offers snowshoeing classes; to learn more, visit rei.com/outdoorschool.

Are you getting enough vitamin D? Michael Holick, M.D., author of The Vitamin D Solution, estimates that up to 50 percent of Americans are at risk for a deficiency of this vital, versatile vitamin. We know that D helps our bodies absorb calcium—essential for strong bones and teeth. Research suggests it also promotes skin healing and blood flow, helps control diabetes and helps alleviate seasonal affective disorder, premenstrual symptoms and mood swings, and may even lower one’s odds of cancer. The vitamin is also thought to improve immune-system function, decreasing your risk of catching a cold or the flu. The U.S. Government recently raised the recommended daily allowance of D from 200–400 international units (IUs) to 600—and some experts suggest higher amounts. Holy Name Medical Center cardiologist Marian Van Dyck-Acquah, M.D., for example, thinks adults should get 800 IUs daily—from diet, sensible sun exposure and supplements. Traditional warning signs of a D deficiency, says Dr. Van Dyck-Acquah, include frequent falls or fractures and evidence of osteoporosis on a bone scan. “But now a slew of what we call ‘extra-skeletal’ complications may be associated with Vitamin D insufficiency,” adds the doctor. “For example, large multi-center trials are under way to evaluate a possible link between low D levels and adverse cardiovascular outcomes like valve disease. There may also be a link to depression and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.” Experts agree that fall and winter, with their limited daylight, call for extra vigilance about D. So be sure to get a few minutes of sun exposure each day. Eat D-rich foods such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel and sardines), fortified dairy products and cereals, egg yolks and cod liver oil. And for many people, a multivitamin or supplement may also be necessary to reach the recommended daily amount. Check with your doctor.

A PLUM SPOT

The young—and the young at heart—have a new reason to visit Bergen Town Center in Paramus: Sugar and Plumm, Purveyors of Yumm (201.880.8157, sugarandplumm. com), a recently opened sweets shop offering candy, ice cream, chocolates, baked goods and a full menu with breakfast, lunch and dinner options for those who want to sit down and stay awhile. The whimsical shop/cafe, with purple banquettes and clouds hanging from the ceiling, is the brainchild of Lamia Jacobs, a former oil trader who had always dreamed of opening “a nice, uplifting place where if you’re having a bad day—or you just want to have fun—you can say, ‘Okay, let’s go to Sugar and Plumm!’” she says. Jacobs, who lives in Greenwich, Conn., and hails from Paris, loves dessert but feels that many American desserts are too sweet. So the goodies at Sugar and Plumm have less sugar and are more subtle, and it’s evident in the delicious Yumm Drop ice cream sundae with brownies, hot fudge and meringues our writer enjoyed on a recent visit. Everything—chocolate, ice cream, sauces, baked goods—is made from scratch in the company’s Moonachie baker y by executive pastr y chef Franck Labasse, previously of the Wynn Las Vegas hotel. Jacobs had originally planned to open the first Sugar and Plumm in Manhattan, but when Bergen Town Center was suggested to her, Jacobs went to check it out. “The parking lot was packed!” she remembers. “There were so many children. I thought, ‘Oh, maybe it’s just a busy day.’ But then I visited again, and the parking lot was packed again. And again the next time. I was convinced it would be the per fect spot.” New stores are due to open next year on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and in Brooklyn, and Jacobs plans to expand nationally.

Half the fun of giving a gift lies in the pretty presentation. But those brightly wrapped holiday packages can be eco-unfriendly. Wrapping paper is typically non-recyclable because it’s dyed, laminated and often contains metallic coloring or glitter. So, how to give attractive gifts and still help save the planet? Try these ideas: Open gifts carefully so you can reuse bows, wrapping paper, gift bags and tissue. Instead of buying gift boxes, reuse shoe boxes and other boxes you have around the house. Consider wrapping or containers that are part of the gift: a scarf, beach towel, a mug, watering can, baby blanket, mixing bowl and so on. Buy squares of beautiful fabrics, cloth bags (check out ecowrap.com, bobowrap.com and wrapnatural. com) and cloth ribbons that can be reused each year. Purchase only wrapping paper and packaging made with mostly or entirely recycled paper. Gorgeous options abound online; check out olivepaper. com, nashvillewraps.com and snails pacepaper.com.

CHRISTMAS AT 1600 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE Glen Ridge resident Coleen Christian Burke has a passion for holiday decorating at the White House. Chosen as a volunteer decorator for then-First Lady Laura Bush, Burke has helped to decorate the White House every year since 2008. She also runs a seasonal holiday decorating business called Sugar Plums, through which you can decorate your home in a theme once chosen by a first lady for the White House, from Jackie Kennedy through Michelle Obama (visit haveawhitehousechristmas. com). And now Burke has come out with the glossy book Christmas with the First Ladies (Insight Editions, $29.95). “Readers will get to see amazing photos of our first families celebrating Christmas, plus party invitations and recipes and crafts used by the first ladies,” Burke says. “Each first lady has her own special holiday style, and I teach you how to copy it in your own home.”

New Jersey’s own Infernos Band

Most wedding and corporate-event bands cannot include performing for President Obama and Governors James McGreevey and Jon Corzine on their resume, but New Jerey’s own Infernos Band (theinfernosband.com) can. The Infernos have been per forming since 1977 and have opened for big-name bands like Chicago. The Infernos traveled to Rome and L’Aquila—a city that was devastated by an earthquake in 2009—last year to perform a series of benefit concerts, and proceeds from that tour’s documentary, Italy Earthquake Relief Fund Tour, are going to earthquake survivors and their families. (The DVD is for sale at their shows.) Founder and lead singer Bobby Wells says that was the least they could do. “We’ve had the honor of playing shows all over the world for over 30 years, and we feel lucky to be able to do what we love day in and day out,” says Wells. “This is just one small way we can give back.” Wells was given the East Hanover ItalianAmerican Club “Humanitarian of the Year” award in October. To download a version of The Infernos’ “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “I’m So Glad That It’s Time To Be Christmas,” head to bergenhealthandlife.com.

HO-HO HANDMADE “Most people who make Santas make a roly-poly figure holding a sack—a figure with a big belly, big cheeks, red velvet and white fur,” says Kristen Bushman of Mahwah, owner of Kristen’s Kreationz. “I wanted to do anything but.” Instead, Bushman’s handmade Santas are intricate and elegant and made in a variety of themes (such as nautical or gardening) and materials (antique textiles and trims, sequins, men’s ties). “I’m inspired by materials, but also by customer requests,” says Bushman, who has been making the Santas full-time for the past eight years. “Someone will ask for, say, a ‘wine Santa’ to go on their bar. I’ll put a picture of it on the website, and other people see it and have to have it.” Santa collectors—whose numbers are legion—come to Bushman with very specific requests. “I’ve made a Santa out of someone’s grandmother’s old mink coat, and one out of the remnants of a wedding gown,” Bushman says. Bushman’s Santas cost between $195 and $295. See them at Once Upon a Table in Chester, and on her web site, kristenskreationz.com, which also lists her upcoming craft show appearances.

How do you get patients to comply with doctors’ orders? That’s the issue tackled by FirstLine Therapy, a new lifestyle program some healthcare providers are using to help patients manage common problems like diabetes, high cholesterol and excess weight. The FirstLine program includes initial and follow-up testing, nutrition and exercise guidance and—perhaps most important—progress tracking. “As a physician, I have patients with diabetes on multiple medications who would come in every three months and be frustrated because there was no change in their condition,” says Rober t Wehmann, M.D., of Hillsdale (201.666.1400, lasercosmedix.com). “We’d go over their diet recommendations, and they’d promise to do better. Then the same thing would happen at the next visit because they didn’t really have the resources they needed to change their lifestyle.” With the FirstLine Therapy program, patients have regular meetings with Dr. Wehmann and with a “lifestyle educator” to review nutritional recommendations and desired body composition changes. Small-group sessions as well as one-on-one treatment are available. “Often, patients know what they’re supposed to do to lead healthier lifestyles, but they have trouble staying motivated,” says Dr. Wehmann, “Having this guidance and having to monitor their progress helps them succeed.”

is the season to be jolly, and setting the tone for such a sentiment is all about creating great atmosphere. When it comes to holiday decorating, the hardest part is staying away from the expected. Resist the temptation to use all of your saved decorations from years past. Instead, try something new: Pick a color palette and stick to it. What doesn’t fit the bill goes back to the attic or gets a fresh coat of paint. This year, think white. White is the epitome of modernity, elegance and balance. Mixing snow white with traces of green, black and silver is on trend and très chic. To bring greenery and life into your dining room, New Jersey florist extraordinaire Anne Miller of The Little Flower Shoppe in

coordinate your food with your color palette for added impact and elegance.

Ridgewood recommends hanging an oversize wreath. Decorate it with items found in nature such as pinecones, acorns and berries to enchant guests. Flank the hearth and doorway with preserved juniper topiary trees for an instant dose of warmth and intimacy. For your holiday table, choose crisp white linens and layer them with a wide, black ribbon or runner down the center of the table and across at each place setting. This will add dimension to the table and visually anchor each setting. When it comes to flatware, glassware and china, you don’t need to have the best; you just need to know how to use what you’ve got. Don’t be afraid to mix like-colored pieces—whites with off-whites, stainless steel with silver and mercury glass

your local stationer do them for you. Place a menu on top of each napkin, then wrap the napkin and menu with ribbon or a paper strip that matches the invite (as pictured at right). Top it all off with a fresh artichoke to add unexpected texture, dimension and a punch of color. Lastly, make sure the lighting is just right—if you don’t have dimmers on your fixtures, just use candles (always unscented around food) aided by the glow from an illuminated room nearby. Cluster large mercury glass pieces and other silver objects together to bring a little sparkle to darker areas of the room. Carry elements of this onto your table by way of mercury glass votives and a few small silver objects, and you’ll have plenty of sparkle to go around during this festive season.

or crystal with glass. Place your white china on a clear, silver or white charger—layering adds dimension to the table. To add sparkle, use clear glassware and stemware and mix styles to vary the height and look. For centerpieces, Miller says to keep the botanicals simple and seasonal. The velvety texture of Vendela roses and silvery grey Tilandisa is warm and wintry and helps create the mood for a luxurious cold-weather soiree. For an intimate dinner party, keep the arrangements under 12 inches high so as not to disrupt the festive repartee. Bring the black-and-white theme from your mailed invitation through to the place card and menu—it’s really chic and your guests will appreciate the detail. If you’re suffering from low back pain or leg pain, don’t despair. With today’s new technologies and improved techniques relief is much more likely than ever before. The Back Pain Center’s recent purchase of the MLS Laser System coupled with our spinal decompression and REPEX systems has given new hope to those patients who only had surgery to consider. Dr. Alfred Gigante, Chiropractic Physician and founder of The Back Pain Center states, “eight out of ten of our new patients experience a significant improvement after their very first visit”. If you’re not sure if your condition requires therapy, medication or surgery, call for a no charge consultation with Dr. Gigante to help you determine the right course of action. The Back Pain Center was established in 1995 as the first team of chiropractors, physical therapists, and pain management doctors to dedicate their skills specifically to the treatment of low back pain and low back related leg pain, commonly known as sciatica. The Back Pain Center works with most insurance companies.

her to struggle with an incessant fear of the unknown—and consequent depression. She hit a particularly “low point” eight years ago while going through a difficult divorce from an abusive husband and fell into a deep state of depression and constant worry. A single mom with two young children (then 2 and 5), she realized that seeking immediate treatment was crucial to not just her well-being, but also that of her children. “I knew if I didn’t get help I wasn’t going to make it—and I had to survive for the kids,” she says. Miller is one of the 3.1 percent of adults in the United States who suffer from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), which is characterized by excessive, irrational worry about everyday things, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. For example, people with GAD may consistently worry about money, their health, their job or their relationships. They typically have trouble dismissing their concerns, even though they may realize that their anxiety is more severe than the situation warrants. For many, like Miller, this condition often occurs with depression or other anxiety disorders. Another type of anxiety disorder is social anxiety, or social phobia, which is intense fear, self-consciousness and embarrassment in social situations. Social anxiety is the third most common psychological disorder in the United States after

From the uneasiness you Feel about Facing Family to that upset stomach you get at the thought of attending parties that call for nonstop hobnobbing, the holiday season is “go time” for major anxiety. While it’s normal to feel anxious around this stressful time of year, for some, anxiety is a debilitating condition that plagues them all year long, interfering with their day-to-day activities. “Anxiety isn’t brought about by the holidays,” says Charles Goodstein, M.D., a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in private practice in Tenafly. “It’s a disorder that may be intensified by the holidays.” For Kristen Miller* of Norwood, it was not the holidays but major life changes and accompanying stress that would cause

depression and alcoholism. other types of anxiety disorders include obsessive-compulsive disorder (repeated thoughts, feelings or ideas that make you feel driven to perform certain actions) and panic disorder (repeated panic attacks and the intense fear that you will have another attack). The good news: There are many different treatment options to get anxiety under control. “The way we manage a patient’s anxiety comes down to us looking at his or her life experiences,” says Diego l. Coira, M.D., chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at Hackensack University Medical Center. For example, during talk therapy, a person might open up to a professional about what it is about the holiday season that prompts anxiety and worry. “Perhaps childhood memories of discord among family members play a role in why the holiday season is such a difficult time,” Dr. Coira says. or, it may be that a family member died at this time of year, making it a particularly painful period. In addition to talk therapy, you may be encouraged to try stress-management techniques, such as breathing, meditation or exercising. Your doctor may prescribe certain medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSrIs) like fluoxetine (Prozac) or benzodiazepines such as alprazolam (Xanax), or suggest that you attend a support group with others with similar symptoms. Miller’s treatment included both medication and, for the first six months, intensive therapy several times a week. While the medication helped to prevent worries from manifesting as obsessive thoughts, it was the integration of

cognitive-behavioral therapy that offered the best results. “You learn to accept [your anxiety] as a part of who you are and not get depressed by it,” she says, adding that therapy helped her learn stress-reducing practices and identify and break unhealthy patterns. “You need to work with someone who works on skills and gives you ‘homework.’ You really need a plan. You’ve got to write things down, stay on your schedule and be consistent. It’s a lot of work—getting better is a job.” For those suffering from social anxiety, experts believe the best thing to do is face anxiety-provoking situations instead of avoiding them. In other words, don’t skip that tree-trimming party.

Instead, prepare for it by asking the hostess in advance for the names of other people attending so you’ll be sure a friend is there, or better yet, meet that friend ahead of time so you can walk into the party together. “Arrive early to spend a little time with the hostess and get your bearings,” suggests Steven J. Brodsky, a clinical psychologist and an OCD specialist in private practice in Teaneck. And whatever you do, avoid drinking too many alcoholic beverages. You may feel as though alcohol relaxes you, but it can actually make anxiety worse and lead to more problems. Squeezing in yoga classes or regular trips to the gym during this holiday season will help you cope, says Dr. Coira, as will

Could you have an anxiety disorder? to help determine if your anxiety is preventing you from enjoying life to the fullest, here are nine questions to ask yourself: Obsessive-cOmpulsive DisOrDer: do you feel the need to present your home in its most perfect form if you’re hosting an event? do you obsessively clean for your party, straighten pictures or worry that your house isn’t in perfect order? do you excessively dwell on things like germs, dirt or getting a serious illness? do you constantly repeat behaviors like washing, cleaning, counting, rechecking light switches and door locks or making perfect stacks of laundry? sOcial anxiety DisOrDer: do you shy away from parties, constantly making excuses for why you’re unable to attend? do you attend parties and, during conversations, overtly compliment yourself or look for other people’s approval? do you turn the tables after someone asks you a personal question, diverting them quickly from talking about you and your accomplishments to something less personal like politics or the weather? panic DisOrDer: do you wake up in the middle of the night with severe palpitations or shortness of breath? do you start sweating and thinking you’re going to have a heart attack, that you’re going to die, that you’re going to lose your job or that something is going to go terribly wrong? do you feel afraid that you’re going to get trapped somehow either in an airplane, at a party where you’ll be cornered by someone who wants to talk to you or even in a large crowd?

GettinG help getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night and avoiding caffeine (which can increase your sense of anxiety by stimulating your nervous system). learning to stick to an exercise regimen and a consistent schedule was an important aspect of treatment for Miller, who has now managed to keep her anxiety from controlling her life. she makes a point, however, to note that living with anxiety is a constant challenge. “When you have something like this, life is so tough,” she says. “acceptance of change is very hard for anyone but especially for people with anxiety. i’m in a good place now, but it’s always a work in progress.”

if you answered “yes” to most of the questions in any category above, you may want to seek professional help for dealing with anxiety. start with your family doctor to rule out a medical condition. your doctor may then refer you to a mental health professional. and keep in mind, you’re not alone. “you might meet the most confident person and never guess that he or she gets very anxious in social settings,” says dr. Brodsky. “they may be very successful in their life and career. they may be very good at giving speeches to large numbers of people, but that same person might have tremendous difficulty during a one-on-one conversation.” Many people also find support groups helpful. to find one, visit adaa.org or anxietypanic.com/newjersey.htm.

Make this

your year! fast approaching, it’s time again for new year’s resolutions. if you’re like me, you see this as an opportunity for a fresh start. i thoroughly enjoy making new year’s resolutions, especially those involving bettering myself physically. But what i don’t like is breaking them, which i inevitably do after a couple of weeks when the novelty wears off. But there is good news: according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, people who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t. “resolutions can help you assess what you would like to change about your behavior or lifestyle,” says Geri Gourley, a licensed clinical social worker in Englewood. Unfortunately, there are some common pitfalls that derail the best of intentions and stand in the way of achiev-

asked experts for their advice on how these health hazards can be avoided.

pitfall #1: there’s no time for exerCise. Start small. “take a good look at your schedule, and see if there are brief times during the day when some activity could be incorporated,” says Susan Kraus, therapeutic dietitian at hackensack University Medical Center. “For example, how long is your lunch break? Could 10 to 15 minutes be carved out for a walk around the premises or through the building?” Other opportunities for exercise include taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking to get the mail instead of grabbing it when you drive by the mailbox and parking at the far end of the parking lot instead of right next to your destination.

more time than you think. according to Gladys Ditroia, a certified weight management specialist in Wyckoff and the winner of Bergen Health & Life’s “Picture of health” contest, “if you say you don’t have time to exercise, what you’re really saying is that you aren’t willing to make time to exercise. if you have time to watch tV and do other activities, then you have time to exercise.” if you’re not willing to give up your favorite tV show, do exercises such as push-ups and jumping jacks during commercials. alternatively, save 15 to 20 minutes by recording the show and watching it later, minus the commercials; then use that extra time to get in a quick workout, says James hill, Ph.D., co-founder of the national Weight Control registry, the largest study of long-term successful weight loss maintenance. Don’t worry if

your schedule won’t allow for a nonstop 40-minute workout. According to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health, four 10-minute exercise sessions in a day produce the same health benefits as a continuous 40-minute workout.

Pitfall #2: i always forget to floss my teeth.

Make it a habit. To help reduce bacteria that cause bad breath, gingivitis, more serious periodontal (gum) disease and tooth loss, you need to brush and floss your teeth. Brushing removes plaque from the surface of teeth, while “flossing gets into the spaces between teeth and cleans there more thoroughly than a toothbrush can,” says Robert Sinclair, D.D.S., who has a dental practice in Ridgewood. Studies have even shown that flossing can help prevent heart attacks and strokes. If you find yourself consistently forgetting to floss those pearly whites— according to a 2008 survey, only 49 percent of Americans floss daily and 10 percent never floss—put floss in plain view, next to your toothbrush. Also, try flossing before you brush; you’ll be more likely to floss since you won’t want to go to bed without brushing. Another trick: Keep floss or a floss pick in various strategic places, such as in your purse or on your nightstand, so that when you see it, it’ll serve as a reminder. The American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once a day, so make flossing—in addition to brushing and visiting the dentist for cleanings— part of your routine.

shutterstock

Pitfall #3: i have a serious sweet tooth. Moderation is key. “Making unhealthy foods taboo or off-limits only makes you crave them more,” explains DiTroia. “Instead, try to reduce your consumption of such foods in steps, as small changes over time are more apt to stick.” If your favorite dessert is high in calories, look for a similar, calorie-reduced version so that you still satisfy your sweet tooth without going over your daily calorie goal. If you do go overboard with the chocolate one day, it’s not the end of the world: “Setbacks and challenges are a part of life,” says Kraus. “We need to get away from thinking in terms of ‘black and white’ and think about what we can do to be healthy whenever possible.”

_BER1211_Pitfalls_rev1.indd 2

And whether your vice is chocolate, potato chips or cheese pizza, this moderation rule applies. Another key to healthy eating is to plan ahead. “When you have your meals and snacks planned out in advance, it’s much easier to stick with the healthier foods,” says Kraus. And the simple act of eating on a regular basis—every three to four hours—makes it easier to resist temptation because you won’t be starving when you do eat.

basis,” says Gourley. Many people exercise, practice yoga, meditate or take up a hobby such as playing music or dancing. “one simple thing you can do when you feel stressed out is to stop whatever you’re doing, sit down, close your eyes and be mindful,” says Gourley. “Acknowledge your stress, breathe deeply and visualize it leaving your body.”

“resolutions can helP you assess what you would like to change about your behavior or lifest yle.”

It’s easy to put sleep on the back burner when you’re trying to cram everything into the day. And let’s face it, it’s not easy to ignore the constant barrage of distractions such as the Internet and television. But sleep is crucial to your health: “Too little sleep causes most people to become irritable, impatient and cognitively impaired,” says Gourley. “Research also indicates that sleep deprivation can contribute to weight gain and heart disease.” In fact, being wellrested impacts everything from mood and job performance to appearance and diet. “exhausted people tend to rely on foods that will give them a quick fix, which usually means lots of sugar or fat,” says Gourley. “over time, these lifestyle choices increase the probability of diabetes.” The first step to ensuring you get all your zzz’s is to create the right ambiance. Make your bedroom inviting with soft lighting, a cool temperature (around 65 degrees Fahrenheit) and a comfortable bed. Don’t forget to minimize all sources of light—this includes clocks and computers—and sound before settling down. uncontrollable noises such as barking dogs and sirens can be masked with a fan, soothing music or earplugs. Also, follow a routine. If you’re not used to going to bed at the same time every day, it can be difficult to make yourself follow a strict bedtime. But your body will thank you when you do. pick a bedtime when you usually feel tired, and stick to it—even on the weekends. It’s oK to change that time, but do so gradually, moving it 15 minutes every day or two. As important as it is to go to bed at the same time every day, it’s equally important to wake up at the same time each morning. This allows your circadian rhythm, your body’s natural sleep and wake cycle, to remain consistent, which helps you get a good night’s sleep.

—THeRApIST GeRI GouRley

If you know ahead of time you are going to be eating out, cut back for a few days before the event in order to “save up” calories that can then be “spent” on your night out. It is also wise to look at the menu beforehand, if possible, to get a sense of the healthiest options so that you’re prepared when it comes time to order, says DiTroia.

Pitfall #4: there’s no way to avoid stress.

Just because you can’t avoid stress doesn’t mean you should ignore it. experts estimate 60 to 90 percent of all doctor’s visits are stress-related, and chronic stress can lead to severe health problems, including high blood pressure, an increased risk of stroke and heart attack, depression, a weak immune system and infertility. “you may not realize that your chronic and debilitating migraines or back pain could be stressrelated, or that unrelenting stress can end up triggering a mood disorder, but it can,” says Gourley. luckily, stress reduction has been proven to help mitigate symptoms of health problems brought on by stress. So make it a point to de-stress. “The key to decreasing stress is figuring out what relaxing activities work for you and which you’re most likely to incorporate into your lifestyle on a regular

It’s been three months since Jeanne and Kate Martin took on the challenge of reinventing themselves with the help of our health and beauty experts. Here’s what they’ve been up to: FOOD Both women met with Medi-Weightloss Clinics’ Robert Villegas, M.D., who gave them a protein-heavy diet to follow and now monitors their progress. “Learning to be aware of what I put in my mouth is the biggest gift of this program,” says Jeanne. Kate agrees: “If I wanted to lose weight again, this is the way I would do it,” she says. FITNESS They attend personal training sessions weekly with Spain at the Active Center for Health & Wellness, where they are focusing on weight training and core exercises. “It’s an hour of working all the muscle groups,” says Jeanne. “It’s amazing the difference a personal trainer makes.” FACE TIME H. William Song, M.D., at Omni Aesthetics performed cosmetic procedures, including facial fillers and SmoothShapes, a laser treatment that burns away fat, on both women. Also, Jeanne and Kate have undergone cosmetic dental procedures with Marlen Martirossian, D.D.S., at River Edge Family Dental.

Spice Up the Season cinnamon, that aromatic, sweet spice that makes holiday dishes special, has myriad health benefits—and a surprising history

Buy · SToRE · gRow

The spicy powder you sprinkle on your morning latte has a rich history spanning centuries. one of two varieties of cinnamon now available, ceylon (“true” cinnamon), was craved by Egyptians as early as 2000 B.C., when they imported the precious spice from its native Sri Lanka and used it to embalm dead pharaohs. Ancient Romans used ceylon as currency worth more than gold, paying tribute to the sun god Apollo by laying it in his temple as a gift. in medieval times, people appreciated ceylon for its more practical powers, such as treating sore throats and preserving meat. But this sweet treat also has a dark past: The dutch,

PowERS Cinnamon packs a lot of healthy heat: These deceptively sweet sticks are high in fiber and nutrients like calcium and iron. Studies have shown the spice can relieve arthritic pain, combat E. coli bacteria and curb the proliferation of leukemia and lymphoma cells. People living with diabetes may find cinnamon especially powerful, as it has been shown to regulate blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol. But beware: Cassia could cause liver irritation if you get too sprinkle-happy. Modern cooks are wise to do as the Romans did, using cinnamon as a food preservative.

did you know?

Portugese and English enslaved natives on the island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka’s former name), in efforts to monopolize production of ceylon and reap the pricey spice’s rewards. By the late 18th century, however, the Arab delicacy had begun to lose prominence with the emergence of cassia cinnamon as an acceptable substitute. As early as 2800 B.C., Chinese doctors used cassia to treat colds, the flu and digestive problems. while Europeans still prefer the citrusy taste of ceylon, Americans favor cassia, made from the bark of the Cinnamomum cassia, an evergreen found throughout Asia.

Check the supermarket for ground cassia powder. Ceylon can be found in specialty spice stores and ethnic stores. Buy small quantities so the cinnamon doesn’t go stale and lose its flavor. To crush your own cinnamon from sticks, try using a coffee grinder. Both cinnamon powder and sticks are best stored in the cool darkness of your spice drawer. —MiChELE CoRRiSTon

to celebrate Sparkling wine, a holiday tr adition, iS more varied than you think BuBBles, BuBBles and more bubbles! Yes, it’s that time when we toast the year past and the one to come with a pop and a hiss and tons of holiday cheer. While headlines tell of economic woes, champagne and sparkling wine sales remain effervescent: They’re expected to be up at least 7 percent this year over 2010, with some brands like California’s Iron Horse seeing as much as a 24 percent jump.

each december, champagne and sparkling wine sales skyrocket—in some years they’ve spiked 90 percent—as many of us choose these wines as our go-to celebratory drink. But for some, they’re the pour of choice all year long. Hugh davies, winemaker at California’s schramsburg Vineyard (a.k.a. america’s House of sparkling Wine), says there are three reasons: “First, sparkling wine quality has never been higher. second,

BerGenheaLthandLiFe.Com

more people, especially Gen-Xers and millennials, like the way bubbly tastes. Third, because it’s so food-friendly, people are incorporating it into their everyday dining.” sparkling wine can be called champagne only if it’s made in the Champagne region of France from three grapes: Pinot noir, Chardonnay and Pinot muenier. It’s rich, luscious and often the most expensive bubbly-wine option. Then there’s Prosecco, from Italy’s Veneto region, whose popular brands mionetto and lunetta have almost doubled their sales in the last two years, nipping at the heels of champagne for most popular girl in the glass. spain’s budget-friendly bubbly is called Cava. many sparkling wines, which start at less than $15 a bottle, are made from different grapes and in different methods than champagne. They offer fun bubbles at great prices but not the finesse and sophistication of true champagne, and their big bubbles tend to fizz out quickly. While they can still be dry like champagne, these less expensive styles are often fruitier in aroma and flavor. Champagne has more complex aromas and taste profiles including yeasty, fresh-baked bread as well as fresh-fruit attributes. sparkling wine that is made like champagne produces endless strands of teensy bubbles that create a frothy mousse (like the head of beer) when poured. There are now 10 to 12 California wineries making $20-and-up sparkling wines using the traditional methods. says bubbly maker davies: “The best of California’s sparkling wines rival the best made in Champagne or anywhere else in the world.” From pale yellow to pink and from dry to sweet, there are many great California sparkling wines to choose from. our top picks include schramsburg Blanc de Blanc, $35, (Blanc de blanc means it’s made from 100 percent chardonnay), a lively and crisp wine that is still rich on the palate; and mumm napa Brut rosé, $22, (Brut means it’s dry, not sweet, and rosé means this sparkler will have a slightly pink or salmon color either from staying in contact with the skins of the red grapes during fermentation or from a dose of finished red wine), which smells of strawberries and raspberries with cream and pairs wonderfully with chocolate. These other american sparkling-wine producers will also help you celebrate in style: Iron Horse Vineyards, scharffenberger Cellars, roederer estate, Gloria Ferrer, domaine Carneros and argyle Winery. —Maureen C. TryinG To maKe merry WiTh less money this Christmas or hanukkah? if your holiday budget has you crying “Bah, humbug!” here are ways to save without being a Scrooge: have a plan. The key to smart shopping is to know how much money you can realistically afford to spend, says Stephanie mills, associate vice president of wealth management and financial adviser for morgan Stanley Smith Barney in paramus. a rough guide to society’s norm? last year, the average american’s holiday budget was just under $700, but for the northeast it was $765. maKe a liST. coaches, etc. Then pare it down. Talk to close friends and family about not exchanging gifts or about doing a “Secret Santa” system to limit expected gifts. BrainSTorm ideaS. Start with the big gifts. “if you’re dreaming of a new bicycle for your son or a dollhouse for your daughter under the tree, start there,” mills advises. “Spend less on stocking stuffers and smaller gifts so you can get one or two bigger things and create lasting memories.” Keep iT Simple. “Gifts don’t need to be elaborate, especially in a post-recession economy,” says ellie Kay, author of The Little Book of Big Savings (Watermark press). “Think ‘practical’ for friends and family who have been hit by the

recession and consider giving gift cards that they can use to purchase essentials like food and clothing. These can still be customized to be more personal, but such gifts can be more practical than any other, and they’re better than cash.” Shop around. “Just because a board game may be cheaper at one store doesn’t mean all items are,” mills says. “do your research before heading to the stores. Check the circulars for deals and coupons.” pay CaSh. leave your credit cards at home and pay cash. you’ll really see how much you are spending, and when the money runs out, you’ll have no choice but to stop. don’t put anything on a credit card unless you know you can pay it off at the end of the month. Be TeCh-Savvy. Find deals on the Web with sites such as pricegrabber.com, black-friday.net, cybermonday.com and retailmenot.com. use your phone to comparison-shop in the store with apps like Shop Savvy, nexTag and Compare everywhere. don’t forget coupon apps, such as Coupon Sherpa and The Coupons app. GeT CreaTive. “Some people who have too few hours in their day automatically assume they can’t give homemade gifts for the holidays, but that’s not true!” says Kay, who bakes holiday breads and freezes them. “When it comes time to give these to friends, we decorate the wrapped breads with raffia and glue on fresh cranberries as garnish, and voilà! We have a gift that actually takes less time to create than it usually takes to shop for, bring home and wrap a store-bought gift—and costs about one-quarter as much.” don’T TreaT yourSelF. The quickest way to blow the budget is a “one for you, one for me” mindset. make it a rule to not buy anything for yourself while shopping for others. if you know you won’t have the willpower to resist a temping sale, set a limit in advance for yourself and stick to it. remorSeFul? reTurn iT. it is easy to get swept up in the excitement of a deal and buy something big that wasn’t on your list. heed your inner buyer’s remorse and take it back. KnoW When To STop. “Be aware that you may be tempted to keep buying, even when you’ve already conquered your list,” Kay warns. “marketers are good at placing irresistible bargains in eyecatching places. remember the main rule of the shopping season: you can go broke saving money.” —Rebecca K. abma

On September 22, 2011, many of the Readers’ Choice winners as well as other local Bergen County professionals and more than 1,200 guests gathered at The Estate at Florentine Gardens in River Vale for an extraordinary night. In the pages that follow we have highlighted some of the featured vendors who helped to make the night memorable.

Salesmen from Park avenue acura were on hand to handle any questions about the sleek, new 2012 mDX on display on the patio at BergenFest as well as some incredible low-financing opportunities they were offering on their luxury models. By all accounts, this sporty mDX is highly recommended for both its comfort and versatility as well as an exciting drive that can easily be compared with BmW’s X5. In fact, Park avenue acura is part of an automobile group that includes Park avenue BmW that is literally located across the street from their Route 17 location. Park avenue also has long-standing roots in Bergen County that started in

Rutherford in 1978 with the opening of Park avenue BmW. The company is still family-owned and operated and prides itself for the personal approach they bring to selling and servicing their cars. The bottom line is customer service and developing a long-standing relationship with customers is their #1 goal— and they make a habit of sticking by their customers and their cars for the years until they’re ready for a new one. Park ave auto Group also sponsors local programs, sporting teams, town races and great county events. To find out what they’re all about, check out “Park ave News” page on their website.

The Fountain Spa has been voted the Best Spa in Bergen County for five years running for good reason. “many people were excited to see us at BergenFest,” says Joyce Fountain, vice president of the exclusive day and medical spa. “a gift certificate from The Fountain Spa is the perfect gift for any occasion; it’s always the right size for any man or woman.” at BergenFest, there were some great giveaways, discount coupons for personalized spa services, airbrush tanning and other packages. “We do not use coloring during our tanning, but a totally organic material that stimulates the body’s melatonin for a more natural tan. This method is used by Jets cheerleaders and the Fox 5 newscast,” one of the on-hand beauty consultants explains. a spa popular option is the side-by-side massages

The free makeup consultations by The Shops of Riverside were a popular stop, with women watching carefully in handheld mirrors as beauty professionals offered some words of advice. There was a Chanel counter sponsored by Saks Fifth avenue on the right side, and laura mercier products at the Bloomingdales counter to the left. This, and the generous giveaways (including $1,000 shopping spree), was certainly creating a lot of buzz in the room. “We were excited to be a part of an event that brought the Best of Bergen together. There was great vibe and lots of activity. It was a great opportunity for us to connect with the community. We were happy to hear from many of our customers who came by to let us know that they ‘shop

with us’,” said lisa Polino, Director of marketing & Business Development for The Shops at Riverside. The Shops at Riverside is Bergen County’s premiere shopping destination featuring an unrivaled collection of over 70 high-end and bridge specialty stores, anchored by Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth avenue, Barnes & Noble and Pottery Barn; including such premiere retailers as Tiffany & Co., louis Vuitton, hermes, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Williams Sonoma. located only minutes from manhattan and topped off by “New Jersey’s own Restaurant Row” with eight full-service fine dining establishments, a full service day spa, and available valet service, The Shops at Riverside provides a pleasant, sophisticated shopping experience for guests with distinctive taste.

“It was our first time participating, and we’ll be sure never to miss it again.” Devon Fine Jewelry is an extraordinary store with one of the widest selections of gems anywhere in the Northeast. With more than 85 different varieties on sale, Nancy’s customers say that it’s more than just a store—it’s an experience. They work hard to educate its customers to ensure each item is a perfect match for a customer’s coloring, style, collection and budget. In addition, they stage entertaining and informative events on an ongoing basis. Devon Fine Jewelry also works closely with area non-profits and established The Devon Foundation to help the people of the developing world take better advantage of their gemological resources.

2011 BERGENFEST sponsors

There was a treasure hunt underway this year at BergenFest— and quite a treasure it was. Before guests started to arrive, Devon Fine Jewelry had hidden 10 orange-tagged Finders keepers bags filled with over $6,000 worth of their merchandise in spots throughout The Estate at Florentine Gardens. and this was just a preview of what’s to come. November will be their 32nd year of placing Finders keepers bags in plain sight throughout Bergen County, and Devon Fine Jewelry will be giving away $42,000 worth of their unique gems and jewelry. For the first time, they’ll also be giving out clues through Facebook, Twitter and email. “BergenFest was an incredible event. Everyone enjoyed themselves, and we loved meeting the lucky finders,” says Nancy Schuring, the founder and owner of Devon Fine Jewelry.

In fact, the laufer family has a deep rooted respect for the elderly that is reflected in everything they do. The nearby facilities, located in Rockland and Orange counties, offer a full spectrum of living options so a resident need not look elsewhere if their needs change over time. But what really sets Promenade Senior living communities apart from others is the personalized and friendly atmosphere that comes with 40 years of experience. Representatives from The active Center for health and Wellness were on hand at BergenFest to explain their approach to achieving wellness. “many men and women were excited about our signature treatment, Bio-identical hormone Replacement Therapy (BhRT) because it reverses many of the negative effects of aging such as decreased energy and sex drive, many diseases, and much more,” explains lisamarie Volino, cofounder. “The countless benefits of BhRT are supported by numerous medical and scientific studies, and BhRT has gained popularity in the u.S.” after a complete analysis of your total health, a BhRT expert maps a personalized program to restore hormonal balance and vitality. active Center’s elite team of physicians, dieticians, acupuncturists, personal trainers, skin care experts, massage therapists, and life coaches are on-hand to optimize wellness utilizing the latest in traditional medicine and complementary health modalities.

Decorating Den’s slide show of “before and after” spaces they’d transformed was impressive. “It was our first time sponsoring BergenFest. There was such terrific energy from the guests, sponsors, hosts and entertainment. The guests were quite engaged and interested in what there was to see and do,” says lucia Palmeri, lauren Woods, Susan keefe and Tammy Vallar, owners of the interior decorating business. “It was such a great experience we wished the night could have lasted longer. We can’t wait to do it again next year!” Decorating Den Interiors provides complimentary at-home consultations and brings decorating selections to the homeowner so clients can actually see how a new concept will look in their home. Everything is custom from their initial design ideas through installation. These pros handle it all, making your life easier and saving valuable time. … and, by the way, mention BergenFest when you call them and receive $250 off custom window treatments for two or more windows.

It took a minute, but when people realized that The Curtain Exchange had made their dresses and vest from curtain material, the cleverness of what they had done brought a smile to everyone’s face. “What really made my night was when we chose the winner of our giveaway. The woman who won the free pair of curtains was so excited, you would have thought she won the lottery,” said mary Gorman, the owner of the Ridgewood-based store. “It was refreshing to see someone so excited and appreciative.” In addition to custom creations, The Curtain Exchange offers custom-quality— but ready-made (and not at custom prices)—window treatments in your favorite styles and fabrics. In addition to in-home consultations, customers can borrow panels to make sure their selections are right for a particular room and its lighting. If it doesn’t work, try again… it’s that simple.

dreamscape LEAVE THIs WorLD AnD EnTEr A place of dream-inspiring tranquility with a visit to Twin Farms resort in Barnard, Vermont. named the best small hotel in the U.s. by Zagat in 2010, it’s worth the drive. As you pass through quintessential Vermont landscape where small farmhouses dot snowy fields, you see a preview of what’s to come in your near-private getaway. Upon arrival, guests are personally welcomed by staff and given a short tour of the property. The main house (circa 1795) is rich in history, having been owned and occupied by nobel Prize–winning writer sinclair Lewis and his wife, journalist Dorothy Thompson. They’re considered the “twin spirits of Twin Farms,” and their artistry is honored with contemplative landscaping and bold combinations of art and architecture found throughout the several free-standing properties located on 300 acres of woods and meadows. Your most difficult task in planning a visit to Twin Farms will be deciding which accommodations most delight your senses. Within the Main House, there are four suites decorated by the late Jed Johnson to complement the traditional new England architecture. Toile drapery, quilt-covered feather beds and thick, handmade rugs laid on original pine boards create a warm, relaxed atmosphere. If traditional décor

isn’t your cup of tea, look beyond the Main House to the Lodge (with two suites) or the Farmhouse at Copper Hill (with four). For a truly private experience, reserve one of the 10 “cottages.” During my visit, I stayed in the modern studio, complete with cathedral ceiling, original artwork by Frank stella, lofted sleeping space with views into the woods and a giant copper tub, good for an afternoon soak after skiing one of the six private downhill runs. For those looking for more winter fun, the resort maintains a 100´ x 50´ ice rink. Ice skates are kept warm for guests, and steaming hot mugs of cocoa and treats from the pastry chef are just a request away. An outdoor fire warms your mittens as you enjoy a drink with friends. In case you’ve forgotten you’re at Twin Farms to relax, visit the “out of the Woods” spa. The “Ultimate Body Treatment” offers a full hour and 45 minutes of other-worldly relaxation and includes body exfoliation, a hydrotherapy session, a deep-sea body wrap and a refreshing massage. (Guests may also request spa services within their accommodations.) nearby is the free-standing Furo, a Japanese-style, 104-degree indoor soaking pool. Make sure to reserve a time in the Furo in advance of your stay. new England Culinary Institute–trained chef Ted Ask’s “farm to table” philosophy

means meals at Twin Farms are fresh, innovative and local. At breakfast, ask your server for the soufflé pancakes. During lunch, enjoy farm-fresh salads with unique wine pairings. In the evening, cocktail hour begins at 7 p.m., with dinner served promptly at 8 in the dining room located within the Main House. Expect to enjoy hearty handmade breads, Vermont butters and cheeses and exquisite main courses at once unexpected and familiar. The roasted beef strip with horseradish whipped fingerling potatoes is truly enjoyable. If you feel like staying in, dinner will arrive en suite picnic-style, complete with table setting, paired wine selection, breads, salad and main course. And don’t forget dessert—the hazelnut brown-butter cake with chocolate ganache, poached white figs and orange drizzle is the perfect winter’s eve ending. With the exception of breakfast, meals are predetermined by the chef. Because Twin Farms always aims to please, you’ll be asked your culinary preferences prior to your stay so that what’s served is tailored to your liking. In every way, Twin Farms strives to accommodate guests. The resort’s easy hospitality, serene location and inspiring architecture make for a reverie-like getaway—and right away you’ll be dreaming of your next visit. —Carole Soule
