Riding around Park Ridge with a stop at the historic train depot
Bathing suits, bugs and BBQs are some things that come to mind when you think about summer. But I’m sure you’ll agree it also invites us to “get out”—not only outdoors, to enjoy the warm weather and long days, but also out of our comfort zones to try something new. For example, what about kayaking (see page 17) or running instead of exercising indoors (see page 32), or perhaps camping under the stars? For me, growing up in the Midwest, summer meant camping. Every weekend my family and I would head to the lake—just as we all head to the Shore in New Jersey. It was like living off the grid! No cars, phones, electricity, running water or any of the other comforts we take for granted—absolutely liberating! So in the spirit of summer and that irreverent, youthful impulse we all feel in different ways, we’ve devoted this issue to many of the wonderful things about summer in New Jersey—like the renowned Jersey tomatoes (page 56) that are ripe for the pickin’. You’ll find the perfect beach bag (page 24), seaworthy baubles (page 26), chic poolside and patio furniture (page 30), a Shore house to die for (page 40), a grilling recipe and much more! Enjoy!

Here’s a summer idea: Why not enjoy the great outdoors by going kayaking? and while paddling your way alongside the scenic banks of the state’s pristine parks, take note of the unexpected workout you’re receiving: The water sport, similar to canoeing, is a bona fide calorie buster (it burns 300 to 500 an hour, depending on water conditions and your speed and body weight), provides low-impact upper-body conditioning (requiring about 500 paddle strokes per mile) and is an eco-friendly way to sightsee and explore. “Paddling is great activity for family pleasure or a day of solitude,” says Rob Fischer of Ramsey outdoor in Paramus and Ramsey.

Sightseeing Hudson River at Liberty State Park, where you can spot the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline (The park’s Nature Interpretive Center offers kayaking eco tours. White-water adventure The Delaware River at various points in the tri-state area (Kittatinny Canoes in Barryville, N.Y., offers novice tours on the river at several launch spots: kittatinny.com. Garden State GherkinS July is national Pickle month—and what better time to celebrate that addictive crunchy condiment than during the season of picnic parties and backyard barbecues? Whether you favor classic kosher dills or bread-andbutter “chips,” you’ll find them at Picklelicious (201.833.0100, picklelicious.com) in Teaneck. Prefer a snack with a little more kick? You’ll get just that and then some with monmouth county–based señor juan’s Hot and spicy Pickles (srjuan.com), available at Whole Foods in edgewater and ridgewood. or if you fancy variety, visit Lyndhurst’s Pickles, Olives Etc. (201.729.1414, picklesand olives.com), which sells pickled sweet red peppers, hot peppers and mixed veggies.
ready to get squeaky-clean? before slathering those suds on your skin, take a second to read the label. If you can’t pronounce the ingredients, you probably shouldn’t be using the product. commercial cleansers contain harsh preservatives and synthetic fragrances that strip the skin of its natural oils, often resulting in dryness, irritation and blemishes, not to mention the dire effects they have on the earth after running down the drain. Instead, take the natural, eco-friendly approach to skin care by lathering up with a homemade soap. For instance, Coventry Body Care (coventrybodycare. com), started by Sue ann christensen of mahwah, is a line of soap bars, body butters, lip balms and more all made with an ingredient list that’s much more palatable—including fresh herbs and spices, olive oil and honey. To help promote indie, earth-conscious artisans like herself, christensen also sells recycledglass soap dishes from an artist in california and handcrafted socks (to complement her foot cream), made in Vermont from recycled cotton. christensen’s soaps are $7 each or three for $20 and are available for purchase on her website.

What do you need for an idyllic day at the pool or shore besides sunblock and a towel? a book, of course! Here are four recommended summer page-turners, two from our editors and two from our friends at ridgewood’s Bookends (201.445.0726, book-ends.com): Princeton grad Jennifer Weiner’s newest novel, The Next Best Thing, features the character of ruthie, a budding screenwriter with a facial scar who is struggling with finding love and achieving success in Hollywood. The dedicated Weiner fan may remember the protagonist from the short story “Swim” in Weiner’s The Guy Not Taken. atria books, $27 (an editors’ pick) robin gaby Fisher, a two-time Pulitzer finalist and journalism professor at rutgers University in newark, teamed with filmmaker angelo J. guglielmo Jr. to tell the disturbing story of Tania Head, who falsely presented herself as a 9/11 survivor. The Woman Who Wasn’t There follows Head through her success in becoming president of the World Trade center Survivors’ network and the eventual unraveling of her tale, revealing that she hadn’t entered the United States until 2003. Touchstone, $26 (an editors’ pick) Travel back to the ’20s in Paula mcLain’s The Paris Wife, which tells the love story of ernest Hemingway and Hadley richardson, whose lively social life inspired the writer’s novel The Sun Also Rises. ballantine books, $25 (a bookends pick) ridgewood resident Harlan coben’s newest mystery, Stay Close, is set in gritty atlantic city, where a crippled photographer, a housewife and a determined detective are haunted by an event that occurred almost two decades prior. a missing-person case forces the characters to confront their past in order to solve the mystery. dutton, $28 (a bookends pick)

MOTHER’S MILK
Expectant mothers have a lot of big decisions to make—from where to give birth to which method of delivery they’ll use to where to secure child care after maternity leave ends. But the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is trying to make one decision a no-brainer: breastfeeding. According to an AAP statement published earlier this year, exclusively breastfeeding for six months has numerous health benefits for both baby and mother. In our state, however, rates of breastfeeding declined from 42 percent in 2000 to 39 percent in 2011, according to the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. The AAP explains that breastfeeding reduces the rate of certain diseases and ailments in newborns, including asthma (up to 46 percent), celiac disease (52 percent), obesity (24 percent) and diabetes (type 1: 30 percent; type 2: 40 percent). Teresa Mancuso, a lactation specialist at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, stresses the benefits the practice has for the mother. “It decreases the risk of osteoporosis, excessive bleeding post-birth and premenopausal breast and ovarian cancer,” she says. “Plus, there’s bonding that goes on between the mother and the baby, and hormones secreted during breastfeeding increase this bonding.” To encourage this practice among its patients, Englewood offers a “warm-line” support service (201.894.3354), which new mothers can call for advice on breastfeeding from lactation specialists like Mancuso.

Frozen yogurt, ice cream’s low-calorie, low-fat and probiotic-rich cousin, is making a comeback, with specialty shops popping up all around Bergen County. The new twist on this twisted treat is self-service. Where you once merely requested vanilla or chocolate and sprinkles or syrup, today’s local yogurt shops have put the decisions—and plenty of them— in your hands. Some stores have yogurt in up to 30 flavors like red velvet, cake batter, cappuccino and blueberry and a variety of toppings such as fresh fruit, chocolate shavings or cereal for a really personalized snack. And most stores price by weight, so you pay for what you pick. Since frozen yogurt averages about 100 calories per serving— depending on the flavor—and most places also offer sugar- and dairyfree choices, this is a figure-friendly and fashionable delight.

Putting MoM’s health first
Early this year, The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood became the first hospital in northern New Jersey to partner with Spirit of Women, a health program based in Florida with more than 100 partner hospitals nationwide. Through the program, women can sign up to receive monthly e-newsletters and a quarterly digital magazine, both filled with pertinent, up-to-date information about health issues affecting women. Also, the hospital will present a series of educational events on women’s health topics and offer special perks, like door prizes and an elegant meal. “This program is a tool for empowering and educating women to make smart choices regarding their healthcare,” says Deborah Rath of the Women’s and Children’s Resource Center. “Women are often so busy caring for their families that they land at the bottom of the list.” Sign up at valleyhealth.com/spiritofwomen.
our staff’s shore bets
Its reputation may have taken a blow after being exploited on reality television, but the Jersey Shore makes us think less of Snooki and more of beautiful beaches, family-friendly boardwalks and quaint stores and restaurants. Here our staff shares their favorite places to see and things to do on the Jersey coastline (see great nostalgic images of the Jersey Shore starting on page 36). “I can’t miss the bodega Shoppe in Asbury Park. It has great finds at great prices with a vibe that reminds me of miami or New York City—it’s impossible to resist buying something. Say hello to the owner, michael, and tell him I sent you!” —jennifer Vreeland, editor in Chief
There’s an app for that. Through the Paramus-based company StearClear, users can request a driving team to pick them up and drive both them and their car home safely. StearClear works through a downloadable smartphone app, which users can log onto to request rides and store their credit card information and address. When a ride is requested, the app’s gPS determines the user’s location and notifies the nearest driving team. The cost for the service is $20 plus $2.50 per mile. A charge for tolls and multiple drop-offs may be added. The service is available in Franklin Lakes, Ho-Ho-Kus, Little Falls, midland Park, Ridgewood, Totowa and Wayne. Download the app free in the iTunes store or the Android marketplace.
“my kids love the amusement park rides at Point Pleasant beach, so we enjoy going down to that boardwalk at least once every summer.” —Marisa Sandora, executive editor “To me, there’s no better place at the Jersey Shore than the ocean City boardwalk. You can often spot me snacking on a banana whip at bashful banana, shrieking on the log flume at gillian’s Wonderland Pier or playing Skeeball until my arm aches!” —Liz Donovan, Associate editor “I remember going to bay Head in high school. The homes were stunning and right on the beach. It was so nice to be able to get up in the morning and run out the back door with the surfboard.” —Meredith McBride Kipp, Art Director “As a history buff I enjoy the Victorian architecture that makes Cape may a charming outpost of the 19th century. Was it really on the porch of the town’s mansion House in 1849 that mary Todd Lincoln stamped her foot and refused to move to the oregon Territory, where Abe had been offered the governorship? Historians aren’t sure. but who can resist a vacation spot that combines the pleasures of the beach with the possible company of such lively ghosts?” —Timothy Kelley, Senior editor

THIS THIRD-GENERATION ENTREPRENEUR’S FOOT WEAR DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY SOLVES FOOT PROBLEMS FASHIONABLY
Schwartz family has been responsible for constant innovations in footwear and foot care products. We caught up with Aetrex Worldwide Inc. CEO Larry Schwartz, who is also a board-certified pedorthist (specialist in the therapeutic use of footwear), to discuss their $65 million global footwear company, headquartered in Teaneck; their first branded retail concept store, located in Englewood; and what it’s really like keeping the business all in the family. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY IN A NUTSHELL? It
was started by my grandfather in the 1940s to provide custom and overthe-counter arch supports for people with complicated foot-related conditions. We didn’t get into shoes until the ’90s, when we began offering comfortable, fashion-forward footwear for women and men. We continued to innovate and in 2002 developed pressure-point-sensing iStep technology, which has changed the way shoe stores have taken care of their customers. Today, we mostly sell Aetrex shoes and supports to shoe stores and other stores worldwide on a wholesale basis. Shoes are also available online at aetrex.com, and select styles can be ordered at nordstrom.com. WHAT IS YOUR CORPORATE STRUCTURE? I’m the oldest brother. I became president 12 years

ago, and then CEO. My dad is chairman, my brother Evan is president, and my brother Matt is executive vice president. We all work as a team, in a partnership. WHAT ARE FAMILY GET-TOGETHERS LIKE?
Easy. We actually all get along very well. My brothers and I work together and, believe it or not, we choose to live near each other too. Matt and I both live in the town of Closter, and Evan just bought a house there. I UNDERSTAND YOU NOW HAVE A RETAIL STORE.
Yes. We chose Englewood for our first retail store because it’s near our company headquarters in Teaneck. Plus, we wanted to open our store in a town with a strong medical community and in an area which is frequented by shoppers within our target demographic. We designed the 2,400square-foot store to provide an interactive experience. When you put a shoe down on the “magic table,” various features of the shoe are displayed through touch-screen technology. We use the iStep to measure foot size, determine arch type and pressure points, and custom-select footwear and orthotic inserts. The info from the scan can be sent via text or e-mail so customers can put it on Facebook or Twitter. The iStep identifies the best way to customize footwear for comfort.
TELL ME ABOUT THE COMPANY’S NEW GPS SHOES.
They contain tracking software, so if someone has Alzheimer’s, that person’s whereabouts can be monitored and relatives notified via computer or cell phone in case he or she gets lost. We feel good about what we’ve created, and we know it will help a lot of people. HOW ARE AETREX SHOES DIFFERENT FROM THOSE OF OTHER MANUFACTURERS? Our
mission is to create the healthiest shoes on the market today, offering consumers comfort, customization and adjustability by incorporating memory foam, built-in orthotic support and anti-microbial linings that protect against bacteria and odor.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE STYLES FOR FALL? Women
might consider our new Berries boots, which combine memory foam with four-way stretch fabrics, and our Essence pumps with removable foot beds. For men, we have Modpods, a casuallooking shoe with floating pods at the base that create, with every step, a sensation of walking on air.

A locAl cArdiologist And mAr Athon runner gives the hows And whys In The PAsT 30 YeArs, joel jacowitz, M.D., has run almost 85,000 miles, including five marathons (26.2-mile races) with a personal record of 2:35 in the Chicago marathon. But when he’s not leaving other runners in the dust, he’s a cardiologist at Cardiacedge in emerson, where he uses state-of-the-art assessment tools to help patients reach their full athletic potential. here Dr. jacowitz answers questions about road running from the perspectives of both a doctor and a competitive athlete. Why is running beneficial? It’s something you can do almost anywhere and anytime with minimum experience and equipment. even as a beginner, you’re likely to see rapid improvement and to miss the activity on the days you don’t run. There’s no other experience that makes me feel as free. is it better to run on a treadmill or outdoors? Fitness-wise, it’s a personal preference. I think running on a treadmill is exceedingly boring, but some people like the camaraderie of being in the gym. If you’re doing road races, however, you must train outside so that your muscles can get used to pounding the pavement. Why do some people prefer to run barefoot or in minimalist shoes? The principle is that we should run the way our early ancestors did. But people back then didn’t live past the age of 25. I don’t know if barefoot/minimalist runners’ careers will have the same longevity as those of traditional runners— we don’t have data on the long-term effects of that type of running. hoW can runners protect themselves from

for tips on buying shoes.) Also, you should be close to an ideal weight. If you’re 300 pounds and want to start running, you should probably lose 50 to 75 pounds on a different program first because the excess weight would be too traumatic on your joints. Finally, start slowly. The biggest mistake beginning runners make is doing too much too soon. Pace yourself, pay attention to your body and know when to back off. What precautions should runners take in hot
In extreme heat, you run the risk of hyperthermia, which is potentially fatal. When you’re in the danger zone, you might stop sweating, get goose bumps, have a headache and feel dizzy or experience more extreme symptoms such as disorientation or collapse. Those symptoms indicate that your body needs to cool down. You can help prevent this by training in the heat—your body will become acclimated to those conditions in about

two weeks—and by staying hydrated. The risk in cold weather is hypothermia, when the body temperature drops below 95 degrees. The most common symptom is a feeling of lethargy. The best protection against hypothermia is layering—always cover your head and hands. What should runners eat before a race? I like to eat a combination of protein, fat and a little bit of carbohydrates (for example, scrambled eggs with half an english muffin topped with a dab of butter). It is a matter of personal preference and what works best for each individual. should runners cross-train? If you’re running short-distance sprints, it’s important to do upper-body strengthening exercises, which will increase your speed. longdistance runners don’t necessarily need to cross-train unless they’re prone to injuries while running, in which case low-impact activities like swimming and biking may be helpful. —liz donovan

Wearing proper running shoes that accommodate your running style and foot shape is important to preventing injury. Paul Kovatis, M.D., director of the Foot and Ankle section of hackensack University Medical Center’s Department of orthopaedic surgery, offers three tips: Avid runners should purchase new shoes every 6 to 9 months. Bring your retired running shoes to the store with you so the salesperson can examine the wear on the inner and outer parts of the sole and help you choose a shoe with proper support for your running pattern. Your feet and ankles should not hurt when running. Those who are wearing proper running shoes and continue to feel pain should consult a foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon.

won’t eliminate what’s living at the bottom of your carpet. The bacteria, pollen, dust mites and dirt that settles deep down into your carpet gets stirred up when children and pets play on the rug. Fine Oriental and Persian rugs are not immune to these contaminants and harsh detergents damage fibers while causing havoc with your family’s health. The solution is to find an effective chemical-free cleaning process. Whereas common cleaning methods soak rugs with hard water and chemicals, then use humid drying conditions that promote mold, RevitaRUGS’ proprietary, organic process does exactly the opposite. Revita’s process starts with purified soft water, which allows for better cleaning. Its process also aids in the removal of previously embedded crystalized salts (soap scum), makes colors more vibrant, and naturally softens the rug. As soon as a rug arrives at Revita’s facility, it is digitally photographed and given a detailed inspection. The rug then goes through a five-step process, including a computer-controlled wash system using organic cleansers and purified soft water and a dual-stage proprietary drying system for to eradicate mold and bacteria growth. It is then re-inspected and delivered to your home. From dry pile to ground in dirt and pet odors, Revita’s safe deepcleaning process brings your rug back to life so your family can enjoy a healthier home. Visit Revita’s website for an in-depth look at its organic processes.

Samantha entered the contest on behalf of herself and her mother, writing: “My mom is absolutely incredible. She raised me and my younger brother after my father passed away suddenly when she was nearly 9 months pregnant. She inspires me and is always there for me. I love her so much and try to encourage her, but she is always so busy putting everyone else first that she has not taken the time to take care of herself.”

s the owner of two high-end women’s clothing stores, Maureen Doron is surrounded by color. Her stores, called Skirt, carry lines like Milly, Trina Turk, Diane von Furstenberg and Tory Burch—classics with a modern twist that deliver vibrant hues and interesting patterns. When one of Doron’s best customers “who always purchased my own personal favorites” mentioned one day that she was an interior designer, Doron knew they were drawn to the same colors and styles. That customer was Philadelphia-based designer Mona Ross Berman. “I had never used an interior designer before,” says Doron, “but I knew that we had the same taste and that I liked her.” Berman eased Doron into decorating, helping her with her home in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and some remodeling of one of her stores. When Doron and her husband decided to build a beach house on the Jersey Shore in Strathmere, Doron commissioned Berman to decorate it “soup to nuts,” Doron explains. “Mona says it was fun because I let her run with it.” And run she did, with a high-energy palette of orange, yellow and turquoise against a white background, a design based on a 1960s table
The custom-made dining table is fashioned after a vintage one that Berman spotted in Miami, providing the color inspiration for the entire house.

that Berman found on a trip to Miami. “When she showed me a picture of the table, she had me hook, line and sinker,” says Doron. Berman’s plan was to give the home a “1960sCalifornia-surfer-chic vibe,” she explains. “I wanted to do something fresh and different and show that there was more than one way to do a beach house. Even though this home is at the Jersey Shore, it feels like it could be in Malibu or somewhere else.” And thankfully, Berman’s client was the sort who is willing to take risks. “I love color,” says Doron. “I own a women’s clothing store. I’m not afraid of it. But Mona was smart in that if you really look at the house, the base pieces are all white or neutral. We layered on the color with fabrics and accessories so in case I get sick of it, I’m not locked into it for 30 years.” But for now, Berman’s dynamic design is perfect for this active young family. “I have three kids who get up at the crack of dawn, and I’m always tired,” says Doron. “But when I walk up the stairs to the kitchen and living room in the morning all bleary-eyed and I see the light streaming in and all the color, I instantly feel uplifted, and a smile breaks out on my face. It’s a fun house to be in.”

For people with sensitivity issues, they tend to be less irritating to the skin.”

CELLULITE, BEGONE! A NEW L ASER TRE ATMENT PROMISES TO Z AP AWAY SKIN DIMPLING. HERE’S HOW IT COMPARES WITH OTHER THERAPIES BY DEBORAH PIKE OLSEN
thighs and buttocks—has long been a pipe dream for doctors and women alike. Over the years, everything from creams to massagers to injections has been touted as a possible cure, but none has offered lasting results. Now, for the first time, there’s an effective, long-lasting treatment. It’s called Cellulaze, and it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last January. “It’s exciting,” says H. William Song, M.D., owner of Omni Aesthetics in Oakland. “The preliminary results have been phenomenal. The ‘worth it’ rating on realself.com [a website where consumers can rate cosmetic treatments] has been hovering near 100 percent.” About 88 million women have cellulite—fat that’s located in pockets just beneath the skin. The condition primarily affects women because the anatomy of their skin is different from men’s. In women, the fibrous bands that hold fat cells are vertical, whereas in men, fat is stored in a diamond pattern, says Barry DiBernardo, M.D., director of New Jersey Plastic Surgery in Montclair and clinical associate professor of surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Cellulite forms when fibers that connect fat to the skin stretch, break down or pull tight, allowing the fat cells to bulge. That leads to a dimpled appearance. Treatments, including Cellulaze, promise to smooth out those bulges. Bergen Health & Life asked experts to evaluate Cellulaze and other commonly used cellulite treatments:

Cellulaze
How it works A small tube (the size of the tip of a pen) containing a laser fiber is inserted underneath the skin. Light energy is delivered just under the skin, increasing its thickness while releasing the bands that pull it down. The laser also reduces the pockets of fat that protrude through the fibrous bands under your skin. Studies show that the treatment increases your skin’s thickness by 25 percent and its elasticity by 29 percent. According to the manufacturer, the procedure is ideal for women who aren’t significantly overweight but have mild to moderate cellulite on their thighs. Pros The results last for up to three years, according to a study of 10 women published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. Also, only one treatment is necessary. “This is the culmination of years of work,” says Dr. DiBernardo. “There’s been no long-term, single treatment for cellulite until now. I’m getting calls from all over the country from people who’ve tried everything. Women who don’t feel comfortable wearing shorts finally have help.” Cons It’s expensive, plus it’s a new procedure, so it will take time to determine its potential side effects. “I like to see a procedure out for six months before I jump on it,” says Dr. Song. Also, although it’s considered minimally invasive, you’ll receive local anesthesia, and some recovery time is involved. You’ll need to wear a compression garment for two to three weeks afterward to prevent fluid buildup. Plus, you’ll have to be patient because it can take two to three months before you see the results, says David L. Abramson, M.D., chief of plastic surgery at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and a physician at The Fountain Spa in Paramus. Cost Ranges from $5,000 to $7,000*, depending on the size of the area to be treated
“women who don’t feel Comfortable we aring ShortS finally have help.” —barry dibernardo, m.d.
SmoothShapeS
How it works A laser causes the pores in fat cells to open and release fat. As a result, the cells shrink. A mechanical roller and vacuum suction help the unwanted fat “drain.” Researchers will soon begin a study in which they combine Cellulaze and SmoothShapes to see if the results are better than Cellulaze alone—and if healing might occur more quickly. “There could be synergistic results,” says Dr. DiBernardo. Pros You won’t need as many treatments as the other noninvasive cellulite procedures. Plus, this procedure lasts longer than others. The manufacturer claims the procedure feels like a deep-tissue massage. Although you may notice that the treated area is red for a few hours after the procedure, there’s no recovery time. “This is the most effective noninvasive, temporary treatment,” says Dr. DiBernardo. Cons The results are temporary, and the procedure is costly. Also, you’ll need to be patient, since your skin will continue to improve for up to six months after your last treatment. Cost $350 per treatment (you’ll need eight treatments twice a week for four weeks)
endermologie
How it works This relatively low-tech treatment uses mechanical rollers and vacuum suction to massage away cellulite. The procedure stretches out the fibrous tissue underneath the skin and squeezes fluid from fat cells to achieve a smooth look, says Dr. Song. Pros It’s relatively inexpensive, and it’s painless. Cons It’s temporary. You’ll need 10 to 20 treatments (once a week), then monthly maintenance, says Dr. Song. Cost $150 per treatment

A wArning About cellulite injections some aesthetic medicine specialists claim that injections of drugs, vitamins, minerals or herbal extracts can chemically dissolve fat, improving cellulite. but the procedures—known as mesotherapy and lipodissolve—don’t work well because they can cause an uneven reduction of fat, says H. william song, M.D., owner of omni Aesthetics in oakland. worse, “you don’t know what you’re getting,” says Dr. song. “they’re not FDA-approved procedures.” in fact, in 2010 the FDA issued warning letters to six u.s. medical spas and a company in brazil for making false or misleading statements on their websites about lipodissolve products. Plus, the FDA has received reports of permanent scarring, skin deformities and deep, painful knots under the skin in the areas where the lipodissolve products were injected.
Questions to Ask your Doctor
VelaShape II
How it works it uses the roller and suction technology from endermologie and adds radiofrequency (rF) to heat fat cells and shrink them. “the rF makes [this procedure] more effective and longer-lasting [than endermologie],” says Dr. song. A recent study found that after five sessions, there was an up to 60 percent overall improvement in skin texture. Pros it’s noninvasive, so there’s less discomfort. (the manufacturer claims the treatments feel like a deep-tissue massage.) Although your skin may appear flushed and warm for several hours after the treatment, you can resume your normal activities immediately. Cons the results don’t last long. Also, although the procedure is FDA-approved and considered safe, there are some concerns about the rF. “People worry about cell phones causing cancer, but the rF in this procedure is 100 to 1,000 times more powerful,” says Dr. song. “so we don’t know about its long-term safety.” Cost $250 per treatment (about 10 are needed, then monthly maintenance, says Dr. song)

before you undergo cellulaze treatment for cellulite, David l. Abramson, M.D., chief of plastic surgery at englewood Hospital and Medical center, recommends asking your physician: Are you a board-certified surgeon? Have you performed related procedures like liposuction? (cellulaze is more difficult to perform than liposuction, says Dr. Abramson.) How many cellulaze procedures have you done? Are your patients happy with the results? May i speak with them and see their beforeand-after photos? next year, when the machine has been out longer, ask: How many of your patients have been re-treated?

why Is pharmacy compounDIng crItIcal to women’s health? atlas drug & nutrition is a community pharmacy specializing in compounding and offers personalized nutritional counseling. pharmacy compounding, an established tradition, allows a physician to prescribe a medication which is customized by a compounding pharmacist for a patient’s individual needs. patients might be allergic to a dye or filler in a massproduced medicine. today, compounding is critical to women’s health. women no longer want a “one-size-fits-all” approach to medical treatment, especially when it comes to bio-identical hormone restoration. doctors prescribe an order that specifically addresses a patient’s individual hormone deficiencies. the compound will appropriately correct the symptoms of the patient’s hormonal imbalances using hormones that are identical to their own physiology. atlas bills all insurance carriers and patients might pay a co-pay. the pharmacy also ships Fedex or uS express mail for next-day delivery.

Is bunIon surgery rIght for me?
ask your doctor
a bunion is a splaying of the big toe joint resulting in a prominant bone by the big toe. once it progresses, it rubs on shoes or the abnormal position of the joint leads to joint deterioration with resulting arthritis, pain and swelling. it can be inherited, or develop due to collapsed arches or flat feet. Surgery is recommended when the bunion pain affects daily activities or you can no longer comfortably wear shoes. often the pain is worse to the adjacent metatarsal and toe because a bunion may no longer absorb it’s share of weight, causing transfer pressure. Several treatment options range from wearing wider shoes to custom orthotic devices. dr. Bravers’ office makes orthotics to stop the arch collapse and reposition the foot for better alignment. this often arrests bunion progression. Should you need surgery, there are several procedures depending on the severity and size of the bunion. the most common procedures are the chevron (austin), long Z (Scarf), Base wedge, and the lapidus (fusion of the metatarsal base). it’s vital that you choose an experienced boardcertified foot surgeon to correctly diagnose, discuss and plan the appropriate procedure for the optimal outcome. it is also important that multiple x-rays are taken during the surgery to achieve correct alignment and fixation. recovery requires wearing a stiff surgical shoe for several weeks (severe bunions require a cast), walking and performing early range-of-motion toe exercises to prevent stiffness. active Foot & ankle care rarely hears complaints of post-surgical pain. patients usually return to work within three to five days depending on how active they are on the job. dr. Braver is trained in a european side-cutting approach for bunion procedures to minimize both scarring and limitation of motion. He is an expert in treating active patients and athletes, enabling them to fully return to activities after surgery. He is former president of the new jersey division of the american college of Foot and ankle Surgeons.

Is there a non-surgIcal way to relIeve my spInal back paIn?
ask your doctor
there are various options that can be considered, including non-surgical options, in addressing spinal back pain. i tailor the treatment plan based on the diagnosis, and the best, and most appropriate avenue of treatment, with full consultation and input from the patient, including providing the patient with the various treatment options available to them. Some basic non-surgical remedies that can be effective in certain cases would be rest, anti-inflammatory medication and heat therapy. if the condition persists, other non-surgical avenues such as a combination of physical therapy, chiropractic care and acupuncture can also be effective. in some cases aqua therapy has also proven to be very helpful. if these treatments prove to be futile then trigger-point injections is an additional non-surgical option that can be considered. i’m a double board-certified pain management physician and anesthesiologist and i also collaborate with spine surgeons in performing minimally invasive procedures. our highly trained staff is dedicated to delivering care in a sensitive and compassionate manner, educating patients and their families about their diseases, and we will thoroughly explain current and possible future treatments, as well as help patients resume normal activities as soon as possible. in an effort to provide better services and accommodate the needs of our patients, we have transferred to a new location in paramus at 37 west century road in Suite 101.

Ripe Red As luscious As it is legendAry, the Jersey tomAto is pAcked with powerful nutrients
Can new Jersey claim the tomato? in truth, it originated in South America and is grown in greatest quantity in China, with California the top-producing u.S. state. But connoisseurs of the Jersey tomato think of this plump red fruit (considered a vegetable in culinary terms, and known to scientists as Solanum lycopersicum) as their own. This is, after all, the state where Rutgers university released its namesake hybrid tomato in 1934 and where the Campbell Soup Company used that flavorful food over succeeding decades to make oceans of soup. Today Campbell’s has switched to a less expensive (and, some say, less flavorful) west Coast variety, but there are still a number of farms growing celebrated varieties of Jersey’s best, and Rutgers has a program in place to bring hybrid species created here back to the market.
PoweRS Studies touting the health benefits of tomatoes are numerous, and their ranks are growing. The fruit is well known for its role in supporting heart health—lycopene, an antioxidant, can help prevent blockages and improve the regulation of fats in the bloodstream, decreasing cholesterol and triglycerides levels. Some research also indicates that lycopene may promote bone health and help prevent cancer. Tomatoes are also rich in phytonutrients linked to
heart health and are chock-full of vitamins C and e, beta-carotene and manganese.
Buy · SToRe · GRow you can buy authentic Jersey tomato hybrid seeds from Rutgers (log onto njfarmfresh.rutgers.edu). ideally, seeds should be started in early April, four to six weeks before the last frost. in a container full of seed-starting soil mix, dig out lines about one-fourth inch deep and sow seeds one-half inch apart. Lightly cover with soil, water gently and place in a warm spot. As soon as stems show, transplant to a bright, sunny location. keep moist. once true leaves sprout, transplant seedlings to their own container. Build up their tolerance to the sun a few hours at a time before leaving the plant in full sun all day. Seedlings can be planted outdoors when they have strong roots and the average temperature is 55 degrees. Set up your tomato wire to help branches support the weight of the fruit. whether harvesting from your backyard, a farmers’ market or the grocer, pick tomatoes that are fully ripe for best flavor and avoid storing in the refrigerator—they’re optimal at room temperature and eaten within two or three days. —keLLey GRAnGeR

Michael ostros, Culinary institute of america graduate and executive chef of teaneck’s regina’s steakhouse & grill, shares a recipe for a succulent summer steak:
Before grilling a steak, remove the packaging and leave the steak uncovered in the refrigerator for about two hours. this will give the steak a “quick dry-age” and a nice char. remove the steak from the refrigerator about 20 minutes before grilling. Meanwhile, heat the grill on high temperature for five minutes. instead of oiling the whole grill grate, drizzle a small amount of oil on the steak then season with salt and pepper. Put the steak on the grill and leave it on one side to seal in the juices, about 10 minutes. (don’t be a flip-flopper!) turn the steak and reduce the heat to medium-low and grill 10 minutes more or until the desired temperature is reached. Let rest before slicing.
regina’s ste akHouse griLLed ste ak WitH CHiMiCHurri sauCe serves 4 inGreDients 1 (16-oz.) new york strip steak olive oil, for drizzling sea salt freshly cracked black pepper
CHimiCHurri sAuCe: inGreDients 1 cup firmly packed fresh flat-leaf parsley, trimmed of thick stems 3 to 4 cloves fresh garlic, peeled 2 tbs. fresh oregano leaves (or 2 teaspoons dried oregano) ½ cup olive oil 2 tbs. white balsamic vinegar 1 tsp. sea salt ¼ tsp. freshly ground black pepper ¼ tsp. chipotle pepper

grass-Fed BeeF: tHe 411 not too long ago consumers asked, “Where’s the beef?” now public scrutiny has turned toward what’s in our beef and how is it being raised, and people are asking if grass-fed beef is really worth the price. spokeswoman Marilyn noble of the american grassfed association (aga), a producers’ organization, answers questions: What is grass-fed beef? the aga defines grass-fed products as those from animals (including cattle, bison, goats and sheep) that have eaten nothing but their mother’s milk and fresh grass or grass-type hay from birth to harvest—all their lives. What are the flavor, texture and health benefits of grass-fed beef steaks as compared With organiclabeled steaks*, grain-fed and/or “regular” storebought steaks? grass-fed steaks have a meatier flavor than their grain-fed counterparts, and that flavor depends upon the breed of the animal as well as the types of grasses in the diet. it’s a bit like the concept of terroir in wine: different places and different pastures will create different flavors in the meat. grass-fed meat should never taste gamey or “off”— if it does, it may have something to do with the age of the animal and/or the handling of the meat during processing. the texture will be firm and perhaps a little chewier than a grain-fed steak, but with proper cooking, it shouldn’t be tough or dry. as far as health benefits go, grass-fed beef is considerably leaner than grain-fed, and the fat it does have is higher in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid (CLa), which research shows helps combat certain cancerous growths, insulin resistance and inflammation. grass-fed beef is also lower in saturated fats and contains higher percentages of vitamin e, beta-carotene, riboflavin and thiamine and the minerals calcium, potassium and magnesium. in addition, grass-fed cattle are never fed antibiotics, growth hormones or animal by-products such as chicken feathers and manure.
done, use a different cut, like a sirloin roast, and a slower cooking method, like braising. the most tender cuts are the best for grilling: tenderloin, rib eye, strips and top sirloin.
WHere to Buy For more information on where to buy grass-fed beef, log on to american grassfed.org for a list of producers. alternatively, visit or buy online from these local purveyors:
have you seen an increase in people buying grass-fed beef? While no one tracks grass-fed statistics as a separate category, it seems the industry has hit the tipping point with consumers. the Hartman group, a market research firm concentrating on health, wellness, food and sustainability, noted that grass-fed meats, along with boutique butchers and heirloom pork, are among the top food trends in 2012. anecdotally, there seems to be increasing interest from the media and from chefs, restaurateurs and consumers over even a year ago. you see grass-fed noted on menus more often, and it’s easier to find in higherend grocery stores and butcher shops. so Why does grass-fed meat cost more? it takes longer to produce grass-fed meats, so the cost on a retail level will generally be higher than commodity beef, which is raised to be brought to market quickly. People who are committed to grass-fed are dedicated to creating the highest-quality, healthiest and most environmentally sustainable product they can achieve, all while making a modest profit. Consumers can save money on grass-fed meats by buying in bulk from a rancher, farmer or purveyor they know and trust [see “Where to Buy” at right]. Buying a half or quarter of a beef brings the cost way down. —Kathleen Keating

*organic steaks must adhere to the usda national organic Program’s standards for livestock, which includes ensuring that the cattle are antibiotic- and growth-hormone-free and 100 percent organicfeed-fed and have access to grazing outdoors.
What should one look for When buying grass-fed-beef steaks? in general, grass-fed cuts may be a little smaller, and the meat will be a darker red than grainfed due to higher percentage of pigments in the naturally lean, athletic cattle. you won’t see as much fat, and the fat you do see may be a little bit on the yellowish side, again from the beta-carotene and other pigments in the grass-fed diet.

What is the best Way to grill grass-fed beef and What are the best cuts? if you’re grilling a steak, let it come to room temperature, then sprinkle liberally with salt about 15 minutes before it goes on the heat. grill over high heat for about three minutes per side for a oneinch thick steak. that will give you a medium-rare result. if you want it medium, move it to a cooler part of the grill and cover for another couple of minutes. after the steak comes off the heat, let it sit for about 10 minutes so that the juices move back through the meat. i would never recommend cooking a grass-fed steak to well done—you’ll cook the moisture right out of it and it won’t be good. if you prefer your meat well

Target are competing at back-toschool time,” says nelson. That means they each have stationery items—notebooks, pens, folders— that are loss leaders (items sold at a loss just to lure consumers into the store). nelson’s strategy? she scours their ads for the deeply discounted items, and because Walmart and Target will pricematch, she heads to one of the retailers to get the lowest prices on whatever she needs for the whole year—often at 80 to 90 percent off! That means you could possibly get everything at one store instead of doing a parking lot crawl.
backpacks at Walmart are fine, says nelson. but as they hit high school, a new strategy is in order: “rather than buying cheap new ones each year, invest in a betterquality backpack,” she says. “my son has had the same l.l. bean backpack for five years. get them with free shipping and a coupon code. and remember, they have lifetime guarantees!” another worthwhile splurge: a good all-purpose jacket, says law, a mother of two girls. “my kids have gotten great use out of the north face girls’ denali fleece zip-ups,” she says. “They give bang for your buck.”
you might find coupons you can print out or special promotions that will help you save 30 to 40 percent off your bottom line, says nelson. example: go to westfield. com/gardenstateplaza/offers for a list of discounts. While you’re at it, visit websites of individual stores (like kohl’s, lord & Taylor, etc.) and type “coupons” into the subject line. also, don’t forget about outlet malls. sure, you know you can pick up that $5 coupon booklet at the information kiosk once you get there, but nelson says that booklet may be free if you sign up on the outlet’s website: “you can just go pick it up once you get there.”

Tell them they can pick out two or three items and no more. since it’s still warm out when school starts, steer them to the sales racks of summer clothes. if they need a bigger wardrobe boost, wait at least two weeks after school starts, says nelson. “by then, they know what they want to wear, and those clothes have already been marked down.” another tip: consider carrying envelopes with all the moolah you budgeted for each child in cash. When the bills are depleted, shopping is done—a concept the kids will grasp easily. —Maria LissandreLLo

college PreP:
Five Reasons to study up on 529 PlAns Millions of faMilies striving to Meet the Mounting costs of college have flocked to 529 college savings plans. For most investors, the plans’ main attractions are the potential for federal tax-deferred earnings growth and federal tax-free qualified withdrawals.1 The plans’ aggregate asset limits, which often exceed $200,000, also appeal to contributors concerned about the potential for a six-figure price tag on a four-year degree. But a closer look at the rules governing 529 plans may reveal other attractive reasons to consider putting them to work as you make one of your most important investments—in your child’s or grandchild’s future.
1
Avoid federAl gift tAxes And AccelerAte giving
You can contribute up to $13,000 (or $26,000 if you and your spouse give and file jointly) to a 529 plan each year without owing federal gift taxes, provided you haven’t made other financial gifts to the plan beneficiary in the same year. In addition, you can elect to make a lump-sum contribution of up to $65,000 ($130,000 for married couples filing jointly) in the first year of a five-year period, provided you don’t give the beneficiary additional taxable gifts during the five-year period.2
2
creAte An educAtionAl funding legAcy
A 529 plan offers the owner control over the plan, including flexibility in naming and changing its beneficiary. The beneficiary can be any age and generally can be changed to a qualified relative when needed. For example, if the original beneficiary decides not to attend college, you can designate a new beneficiary. This flexibility may enable you to establish a college funding legacy for current and future
generations. For example, you could open a 529 plan account to pay your child’s college bills. Then, if there’s money left over after he or she finishes college, you can change the beneficiary to another qualified family member and perhaps later to a grandchild.
3
consolidAte Assets
Consolidating college funding assets for one beneficiary in a single 529 plan can make them easier to manage. Depending on plan rules, you may be able to arrange transfers from a Coverdell Education Savings Account, a custodial account or another 529 plan without triggering federal income taxes. Be sure to review the tax implications with a tax professional, however. Transfers of assets from Series EE and I bonds may also be allowed under certain conditions.

look into stAte tAx sAvings
Money in a 529 account is usually considered by colleges to be the account owner’s asset, which often means the parents’ asset. As a result, a maximum of 5.6% of the balance is generally assumed to be available for college annually, compared with 35% if the assets were the student’s. With a custodial account, on the other hand, the assets are considered the student’s. And according to the Department of Education, qualified distributions from a 529 plan are not counted as parent or student income and therefore do not affect aid eligibility.
Depending on the state you reside in, plan contributions to that state’s 529 plan may be eligible for state tax deductions. Don’t overlook this potential benefit when choosing a plan. There may be other advantages of 529 plans to consider, as well. Be sure to talk with your financial advisor and tax professional for help assessing how a 529 plan may affect your tax situation.

The earnings portion of nonqualified withdrawals is subject to federal income taxes, a 10% federal tax penalty and possible state taxes and penalties. If you die before the end of the five-year period, a prorated portion of the contribution will be considered part of your taxable estate. Section 529 plans are established and maintained by state governments or agencies or eligible educational institutions. Contributions must be kept in a qualified trust in order to be treated as a qualified tuition program. You should consider a 529 Plan’s fees and expenses such as administrative fees, enrollment fees, annual maintenance fees, sales charges, and underlying fund expenses, which will fluctuate depending on the 529 Plan invested in the investments chosen within the plan.

idland Family Dental Care is one of the premier dental practices in Northern New Jersey with four, highly trained specialists with varied areas of expertise. Founded in 1995 in Garfield by Fred Puccio DDS, his practice uses state of the art digital and computer aided technology so most procedures such as crowns, root canals, and dental implants can be done in one visit with no impressions or temporaries. Some of these advanced dental technologies include Cerec (CADCAM), 3D Cone Beam (CATSCAN), Biolase (LASER), and digital x-rays. “Patients don’t have the time for multiple visits and don’t want to go to a dentists they don’t know,” says Dr. Puccio at Midland Family Dental Care, “our patients can relax in our modern, comfortable and clean environment and receive superior dental treatment in one visit in one convenient location.” Dr. Puccio was named one of “America’s Top Dentists,” by the Consumer’s Research Council of America. He was named “teaching attending of the year” at Hackensack University Medical Center in 1999 as well. He is also one of the few dentists in the country to be certified as an Advanced Trainer of Cerec Dentistry. Cerec Dental technology combines in one system a method to restore damaged teeth using high-quality ceramic material in the form of a crown, filling, or veneer.

nestled in the Maine woods lies a cottaGe-style retreat that is at once siMple and sophisticated LoVE THE woods BuT HATE To camp? Find the perfect solution at Hidden Pond, an upscale resort featuring luxurious cottages and bungalows tucked away in the woods about 10 minutes from downtown Kennebunkport, Maine. stepping into one of the 16 two-bedroom cottages is both a surprise and a delight, as each of the 1,100-square-foot buildings is uniquely decorated. The Periwinkle cottage, for example, mixes bright colors like red, yellow and, of course, periwinkle with natural materials to achieve an upbeat, whimsical feel. A cottage is a perfect choice for a family getaway, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen, plus a screened-in porch and outdoor shower. But last year, Hidden Pond added 20 two-person bungalows to the 60-acre property to attract couples, placing these bungalows in another section of the resort along with an adults-only pool. The 700-square-foot bungalows, decorated

in soft earth tones with rustic touches of wood and stone, offer a quiet retreat for those looking to get away sans kids. Also new last year was Earth, a gardeninspired restaurant helmed by star Boston chef Ken oringer. The restaurant, which overlooks the pond that inspired the resort’s name, features homegrown organic vegetables and herbs with fresh local seafood and meat. Another welcome addition is the Tree spa. The spa’s treatment rooms are individual wooden “sheds” built 10 feet off the ground and accessed by wooden footbridges. You are perched among the birch and balsam fir trees as you enjoy your treatment, which features organic Farmaesthetics products. The main gathering place at the resort is the Arts and Crafts–inspired Lodge, which houses the check-in desk, a lounge area with a large stone fireplace and the Back Porch Bar. outside the Lodge is a fire pit
surrounded by wooden benches, tables and chairs. Grab a seat by the nightly bonfire and enjoy a cocktail or complimentary s’mores. The staff will happily provide you with a stick perfect for roasting your marshmallows under the stars. In the morning, a basket of freshly baked muffins and bread appears in a bag hanging outside your door along with hot coffee and a newspaper. Enjoy breakfast on your screened-in porch or snuggled on the couch in front of your stone fireplace, then try a 9 a.m. yoga or tai chi class on the lawn by the organic garden, or grab a bike from Pete’s bike shed on the property and take a one-mile ride over to the beach at Goose Rocks. Hidden Pond guests have access to the beach at The Tides Beach Club, a recently renovated 113-year-old Victorian inn, which is a sister property. Both hotels are a short drive from the picturesque coastal village of Kennebunkport with its myriad shops, restaurants and whale-watching excursions. After a day spent as a tourist in town, it’s a treat to retire to the quiet of the woods at Hidden Pond. —Marisa sandora
