THE RIDE of a lifetime Maybe that Ferrari F430 or Lamborghini Gallardo is a bit out of reach as a permanent fixture in your garage—but thanks to Gotham Dream Cars (212-957-4400, www.gotham dreamcars.com), getting behind the wheel of a coveted car doesn’t have to be a mere fantasy. The company, with a showroom in Englewood and offices in New York City, rents out a fleet of exotic and luxury automobiles for all occasions from birthdays to weddings. Its offerings include the Bentley Continental GTC and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, plus a number of Ferraris and Lamborghinis—the company’s two mostrequested cars. (One-day rentals of the F430 and Gallardo start at $995.) “I enjoy seeing clients’ faces when we hand the keys over—knowing they’re about to have one of the best experiences of their lives,” says Noah Lehmann-Haupt, Gotham Dream Cars’ founder and president. For a fun twist on a classic summer treat, stop by THE HOT DOG CABOOSE in Midland Park (201-444-2531; www.hotdogcaboose.com)—a genuine train caboose parked off Greenwood Avenue. “The food, the friendly service and the nostalgia of the 100-year-old caboose attract people,” says owner Kathie Lane. When her husband, Roger, first saw the caboose, he had the notion it would make a great hot-dog stand—then one day he noticed it was for rent. With business partners Brian and Carol Laube, the Lanes seized the opportunity and spruced up the caboose. In 2006, their unconventional stand opened its windows for business. Besides the standard hot dog ($1.89), the menu includes five “Specialty Dogs” ($2.50), among them the “Italian Dog” (with potatoes, peppers and onions), the “Reuben Dog” (Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing) and the “Taco Dog” (with chili, crushed corn chips, cheese and jalapeños), which Lane touts as their bestseller. The Caboose also offers sausage, soup and ice cream, plus chili and “Frito Pie”—Fritos topped with chili, chopped raw onion and shredded cheddar cheese. “They have super hot dogs—and delicious chili,” says Lori James of Wyckoff. “Everything they have there is good.”

It’s never too early to learn water survival. They teach a technique called “roll-over breathing,” with which a child can sustain him or herself in water by rolling onto the back and floating. “The purpose of the demonstration is to show how infants can be taught to survive a fall into water,” says Bruce Bagin, president of B&B. “And they’re not afraid, because they haven’t been taught to be afraid.” Demonstrations are set for 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., June 18 and 19. You’ll watch a toddler who has been through the program and learn about enrolling your own little ones.

Think you’re savvy about healthy eating? Well, some of what you “know” about food may be mere folklore. Bergen
Health & Life consulted diet experts about a number of widespread beliefs, and these five turned out to be bogus:
Myth #1: Frozen veggies are less nutritious than fresh.

Foods begin to lose their nutritional value the minute they’re picked. “Nutrients are degraded by air, heat and time,” says Joan Salge Blake, clinical associate professor of nutrition at Boston University. Most “fresh” foods have lost much of their worth by the time they reach our plates. Flash-freezing, however, retains nutrients at their peak, as well as antioxidants and other beneficial plant chemicals, says nutrition specialist Christine Gerbstadt, M.D., of Sarasota, Florida. “Eating local” is the best way to eat fresh. “Most studies have looked at a 10to 14-day lag time between harvesting and testing,” says Stephanie DiBacco, assistant professor of nutrition at Russell Sage College in Albany, N.Y. “If you’re eating local food sooner than that, it will have almost as much nutrition as flash-frozen.”

Myth #2: Bananas are fattening. We’ve long known bananas are a rich potassium source, but they also have a reputation for being high in sugar and therefore a threat to one’s waistline. That’s a bum rap, say our experts. “Fruit’s not fattening,” says Blake. “It’s the added sugar in processed foods like soft drinks and baked goods that adds unnecessary calories. A banana is a great source of Mother Nature’s finest nutrition.” Dr. Gerbstadt agrees: “One banana is packed with nutrition and worth every calorie. Bananas are a terrific way for active people to replenish glycogen stores and get a quick energy boost.”
Attention, Snackers Pick nuts instead of chips for between-meal munching. “They’re high in fiber and protein, with heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats,” says dietician Angela Langner of the Nutrition Center of Bergen County in Englewood.

“I was always a proponent of eating small meals, but the evidence just doesn’t show the practice to make a difference in maintaining a healthy weight,” DiBacco says. Rather, it’s the total number of calories—not how you spread them out—that counts. Dr. Gerbstadt agrees: “If the calories are the same, meal frequency is really a matter of lifestyle choice,” she says. What is important: not skipping breakfast. “Studies show that women who miss breakfast do more impulse snacking,” says Blake. “When snacking is unplanned, you’re vulnerable to whatever food is around when you get hungry, such as donuts at a meeting. When you plan your meals, you can snack on things like fruits and nuts on your schedule.”

Foods like celery have “negative calories.” You may have heard that some foods are so lowcal that the energy it takes to chew and digest them more than makes up for the calories they contain. But the truth is that nothing you eat can subtract calories. “It takes about 10 percent of the calories in any food for the body to digest, absorb and use its nutrients, a process often called ‘specific dynamic action’ or ‘thermic effect,’ ” explains Dr. Gerbstadt. “A food like celery has only a few calories per stalk to begin with, but no matter how vigorously you chew, those calories never reach zero or become a negative number.” Nonetheless, crisp and fiber-rich foods are wise choices for a healthy diet. “They fill you up without a lot of calories,” says DiBacco.
Cooking vegetables lessens all their nutrients.
While it’s true that water-soluble vitamins like B and C diminish when cooked in water, fiber and minerals are not affected by cooking. “And fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K actually do better in heat,” says DiBacco. So do the antioxidant properties of the nutrient lycopene, found in tomatoes. “You can minimize nutrient loss by steaming or boiling for a short time in a covered pot with a small amount of water,” says Blake. “Even better, try microwaving, grilling or roasting your veggies to maintain more nutrient value.” No matter how you cook them, vegetables are a key component of a sound diet. “The bottom line,” Dr. Gerbstadt says, “is that we all should eat four to five servings a day of vegetables from a variety of choices for optimal health.” I

SUMMER SKIN SAVERS 7 WAYS TO GUARD AGAINST THE SEASON’S THREATS
You know all about UVA and UVB rays, but are you doing all you can to protect your skin from summer’s dangers? Not if you’re like most of us, say local dermatologists. When Bergen Health & Life asked them for tips for summer-proofing your skin, here’s what they advised:

Check your meds—and your perfume too. Certain medications (such as some anti-

protective benefits of eating antioxidant foods rich in beta-carotene and lycopene (in tomato paste) and beta-carotene supplements shows they may afford skin some natural protection, equal to about SPF 2 or 3. “Don’t count on it to provide your main protection from the sun,” warns Gary Brauner, M.D., a dermatologist who practices in Tenafly and New York City. “But it’s a good idea for one’s overall health to eat a diet rich in antioxidants anyway.”

Don’t skimp on sunscreen—or miss spots. Sure, you put on sunscreen. But most
people don’t apply enough (it should be an ounce, or enough to fill a shot glass), don’t reapply often enough (every two hours) or don’t cover every exposed area, according to Rebecca Baxt, M.D., a Paramus dermatologist and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at New York University Medical School. Most-often-missed places: the tops of the feet, the back of the neck, the part or any exposed skin on the scalp, the ears and the lips. And don’t even think about skipping the SPF on cool, cloudy days. “Up to 80 percent of ultraviolet rays can penetrate through clouds,” explains Sharon Scherl, M.D., Tenafly dermatologist and chief of dermatology at Englewood Hospital. Pamper your pores. If you’re oily or acneprone, opt for a lightweight gel sunscreen (look for the words “oil-free” and “noncomedogenic” on the label). Swipe skin with a salicylic acid toner or witch hazel to remove pore-clogging oil and dead skin cells before applying sunscreen.

Beat body breakouts. These can happen
when sweat and oil get trapped against skin by tight-fitting exercise gear made from synthetic fabrics. To prevent body acne, wear loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibers or moisture-wicking materials. Shower after exercising with a body wash containing 2 percent salicylic acid or 5 to 10 percent benzoyl peroxide. (If breakouts persist, see a dermatologist, who can prescribe a stronger acne medication.)

“Tanning slows down the skin’s natural sloughing process, so pores can become clogged more easily,” explains Dr. Baxt. “Skin may temporarily look better with a tan, but within a few weeks, the breakouts often return and worsen.” According to Glen Rock dermatologist Sharon Galvin, M.D., tanning can also cause skin hyperpigmentation, or a dark spot left behind after a blemish heals. “People think of them as acne scars, but they don’t realize that sun exposure makes them much worse.”

It’s harmless—whatever your body doesn’t use is safely excreted out of your system.” In addition, use a product with the lowest concentration possible of the insect repellant DEET, or a non-DEET repellant like citronella (found in Avon’s Skin So Soft). If you’re hiking or camping, you may wish to use a higher percentage of DEET (Dr. Brauner recommends 30 percent). Whichever product you use, spray it on your clothing instead of directly on your skin, and avoid perfumes and fragranced shampoos, soaps and lotions, as they attract insects. I

For your head: “Look for a hat with a wide, circular brim that goes all the way around,” says dermatologist Gary Brauner, M.D. “A baseball cap only covers the top half of your face.”
For your face: A pair of sunglasses, the bigger the better. “Big frames cover more of the orbital area around the eye, which is also susceptible to sun damage,” says Tenafly dermatologist Sharon Scherl, M.D.
On your body: Wear a cover-up over a bathing suit (a darker color shields skin better than a lighter color). Consider wearing a swim shirt while in the water, because water magnifies UV rays by about 25 percent. Some cover-ups and swim shirts even have SPF built right into the fabric. (For a DIY version, check out RIT’s Sun Guard Laundry Aid, a product that imparts a SPF 30 to your clothes when added to the wash cycle.) Of course, no one wants to cover up head-totoe in summertime. Just do the best you can, advises Dr. Scherl. “A long-sleeved shirt is better than a short-sleeved shirt, but a shortsleeved shirt is better than nothing!”

Helping you live longer: It’s not family ties, but friendly ties that aid longer life, according to data from the 10-year Australian Longitudinal Study of Aging, completed in 2004, which followed nearly 1,500 people ages 70 years and older. After adjusting for other factors that affect longevity, researchers found that those with a strong social network were 22 percent less likely to die during the study. The friends-longevity link was so strong it persisted despite stressful events such as the death of a spouse or the relocation of a loved one.. Boosting brainpower: In a Harvard study of the elderly, memory among those with few friends declined at double the rate of folks with plenty of pals. And the finding gets added support from a Kaiser Permanente study in which strong friendships were shown to protect folks from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Seems exchanging information, opinions and ideas—even if it’s about the latest Hollywood scandal—can keep a person’s thinking keen. I

Having buddies is so good for us, researchers say, that its opposite—social isolation—is a risk factor akin to smoking, high blood pressure and obesity. Here are four ways your social circle keeps you in the pink. Controlling your blood pressure: Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of Americans, and high blood pressure is often the primary cause. But according to new findings in the journal Psychology and Aging, friends can help keep it in check. In the four-year study of 229 people between ages 50 and 68, those identified as the loneliest experienced a 10 percent spike in blood pressure. Even the “modestly” lonely were affected, said lead researcher Louise Hawkley, noting that “loneliness behaved as though it is a risk factor in its own right.” Helping you stay fit: Whether it’s climbing a steep hill with a heavy backpack (like subjects in a University of Virginia study), losing weight or sticking to a workout program, enlisting a buddy makes a task seem less daunting. In the University of Virginia study, those who trekked with a friend perceived the hill to be less steep than those who sweated their way to the summit alone. And in a University of Connecticut study of 189 women, strong social support proved to be a key factor in whether they stuck with a workout plan for a year or more.

WHEN ROY WEBER FIRST MOVED into his Ridgewood Colonial, the recently divorced father of two couldn’t have told you what his design preferences were. “I’d never really thought much about decorating,” admits Weber, 66, a lecturer at Rutgers Business School. He did know that the lovely 1,700square-foot house he’d bought had potential—and that its green, pink and bright yellow walls had to go. Weber wanted to create a good-looking, cheerful home to enjoy with his teenage son and daughter, who would be living with him part-time. But where to start? Weber turned to designer Neela Woodard of Neela Woodard Design in West Orange, who was embarking on a new chapter of her own. She had recently opened her own business after working for interior design firms in Manhattan. “At first I had a hard time articulating what I wanted,” Weber says, “but Neela listened, asked questions and showed me pictures to really draw me out.” “Roy was very involved in the design process and let me know what he liked and didn’t like,” says Woodard. “He eschewed typical manly chrome and giant TV screens in favor of a comfortable, transitional style with clean lines and a few modern touches. He didn’t want anyone to walk in and think, ‘Oh, this is a typical bachelor pad!’” Step one was to replace the mishmash of hues with a single soothing, neutral color: Oatmeal by Benjamin Moore. “It was really important to Roy for the walls to be cheery, and this color makes the rooms feel bright and open,” says Woodard. “Keeping all of the rooms a uniform color also provides a sense of connectedness and makes the house seem larger.” As the project progressed, design choices flowed from the use Weber envisioned for each area. Take, for instance, the airy, inviting living room. “The goal here continued

was to make a really nice place to sit and chat,” says Woodard. To create a peaceful focal point, Woodard revamped the room’s brick fireplace, originally outfitted with a wooden mantel and painted an unsightly red, by substituting a new stone top and white paint. When scouting out living room furniture, Woodard knew both comfort and practicality had to be considered. “The room is located right off the home’s 50

main entrance, and we didn’t want anything too bulky that would block the sight lines or the walkway,” the designer says. So she and Weber selected a couch upholstered in pale red herringbone, two side chairs in a tone-on-tone stripe wool fabric from Q Collection, a Palecek floor lamp and a Crate and Barrel bookcase. Though the room has a spare and uncluttered feel, it’s not without the occasional flourish, such as homey

flower-print valances from Zoffany. For the sleek, dark-toned dining room, furniture was selected with family in mind. “Because my children don’t live here all the time, I wanted to have a place where we could eat together without sitting in front of the television,” says Weber. A large, dark wooden table from Nichols & Stone, surrounded by Palecek chairs upholstered in Malabar cotton, fit the bill and the budget. “You can really go crazy spending on dining-room furniture, but Neela was able to find great pieces for less than I thought I’d have to pay,” says Weber. A sisal carpet from Meridian, a brushed-nickel chandelier with linen shades from Visual Comfort and vintage side tables provide elegant touches. Simplicity reigns in the kitchen, where Weber enjoys whipping up meals for his children. A few clever changes improved the room’s functionality. For instance, Woodard used cabinetry from a corner nook to create the center island. Then the former nook was converted into a more useful “half coat closet, half pantry” with a sliding glass door. Well-chosen updates completed the space, including new stainless-steel appliances, granite countertops, a glass and brushed-nickel light fixture from Nulco Lighting and a gold tile backsplash with frosted glass accents from Artistic Tile. For the cozy den, Weber wanted a room “comfortable enough for the children to hang out in with friends.” A cushy microsuede couch from Room & Board and a wicker couch reupholstered in soft velvet are ideal spots for lounging, playing video games and watching movies. In the center, a glass-top coffee table with metal legs from Baker was chosen for its oval shape. “This is not a big room, and I wanted people to be able to move around easily,” Woodard explains. Today Weber has nothing but raves for his home’s handsome transformation. “It’s comfortable but also attractive, and I really use every room,” he says. “It just fits me perfectly.” As for his kids? “They’re excited and happy about it. When it was first completed, my son even brought all of his friends around and gave them a tour!” ■ BERGEN

Grilled polenta with shrimp and escarole Serves 4
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, plus 2 teaspoons for drizzling 4 cloves garlic, chopped ⁄2 teaspoon crushed red pepper, or to taste 1
2 14-ounce cans no-salt-added diced tomatoes, drained ⁄2 teaspoon dried oregano 1
1 pound peeled cooked shrimp (31–35 per pound; thawed if frozen), tails removed if desired 6 cups thinly sliced escarole (about 1 small head) or spinach 1 16-ounce tube prepared plain polenta, sliced into 8 rounds 8 oil-cured olives, pitted and chopped (optional)
• Preheat grill to high. • Place 1 tablespoon oil and garlic in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, until the garlic is sizzling and fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. Add crushed red pepper; cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add tomatoes and oregano; bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook until juicy, about 3 minutes. Stir in

scallops were one of the dishes of the day. (Listen up for these specials—the ones we tried were different and delightfully robust departures from the standard steakhouse menu.) And so were the trenette, homemade spaghetti-like pasta. Al dente yet tender, the noodles were coated with a silky and aromatic white truffle sauce. And although we ordered a tasting portion, it was so big it could easily have fed two. We opted to forgo the sides (mainstays like creamed spinach, broccoli and baked potato) and accompanied our entrées with a salad. Made with roasted fresh beets, beefsteak tomato wedges, red onion, lively greens and goat cheese, it was a tangy, refreshing medley that cut the “heaviness” of the meat. Now, about that meat: It’s good … damn good. Don’t expect any grace notes with your entrée—order steak (we went for the cowboy rib eye), and steak (on that sizzling plate, don’t forget!) is what you’ll get. Ditto for other meats, like the milk-fed veal chop, our other selection. While the cowboy was mighty impressive—thick, tender with just enough fat and no sinew—it could have used a bit more char. Lacking was the great crust that makes for a smoky bite. Still, HOW ABOUT SOME SIZZLE WITH THAT its flavor was rich and full-bodied, and there certainly steak? in my 20s and treated, and in November I will celebrate five years as a breast-cancer survivor. At one point the doctor gave me six months. As a two-time cancer survivor, I feel God has given me another life so I can help someone.” Giving it a whirl: “Once I would never have entered a ‘cover girl’ contest, but I was like, ‘Joanne, why not? I’m doing things I might not have done before. I’ll go for it!’” New priorities: “Before I was diagnosed with breast cancer I was busy, but in the wrong way—working, working, not taking time for myself. I think stress contributes to cancer. Now I’m going to do what I want.” Stay-young secrets: “I always eat a ‘colorful’ plate of
food, as per my doctor’s orders. I work out 20 to 30 minutes every day, a different kind of exercise each day—I have a treadmill, weights, medicine ball and an Ab Rocket.” Makeup maven: “I enjoy choosing an outfit in the morning and making myself pretty. I lost my eyelashes from chemo, so I put on false eyelashes and all my makeup and have fun. Looking good has a lot to do with attitude.” Maternal wisdom: “I have two sons, Jason, 30, and Marco, 29. My husband and I were strict disciplinarians. They had to do their homework and be home by a certain time. If they wanted a new pair of sneakers, they had to earn it with their behavior.” Dinner engagement: “Kids who don’t have a strong family sometimes make the streets their family. For us, dinner together was important. And if something was going on at our house, it was family meeting time.” Best advice: “My father, Whittie English, was the first African-American contractor to build more than 75 Bergen homes. He told me: ‘Work hard, then it’s OK to play hard’; ‘Don’t take no for an answer’; and ‘You don’t have to be a millionaire to look like one.’” Heels and wheels: “You should have seen me when I was starting out in real estate at age 19! But I wore a suit and high heels and I carried a briefcase, and I got through. If you look the part, they’ll respect you. I kept a good credit rating, and that enabled me to invest in real estate. With the money I made, I bought a red Mercedes Benz. I became known as the young agent with the red Mercedes.” ‘Realtor to the stars’: “I got myself invited to entertainment and sports-industry parties—if Puffy [rapper Sean Combs] or the president of Motown was having one. I’d introduce myself as ‘realtor to the stars’ and say, ‘If you want to move to Jersey, see me.’ Soon people said, ‘Here’s Joanne; she works with celebrities.’ It was a domino effect.” Easiest sale: “I sold singer Mary J. Blige her house in Cresskill about 10 years ago. It was easy, because celebrities know what they want—they don’t have to see 100 houses.” Cancer survivor’s credo: “Cancer need not be a death sentence. Live life to the fullest, share your story, support others, have faith and be thankful for every day you wake up. Every year I host a fundraiser for Englewood Hospital called the ‘Think Pink Spring Bling.’ We have pink food and everyone—men, women and children—wears pink.” Makes it worthwhile: “Someone who’d been to one of my parties came up to me a year later and said, ‘Thank you, Joanne! When I heard the doctor at your event talk about early detection and self-exams, I found a lump— just in time. I believe you saved my life.’” ■
