ROBERT GRAHAM
Winking at women’s fashion You can’t see it in the picture here, but the image on the cover of Avedon Fashion 1944–2000 is printed holographically, so the model literally appears to wink at you as you walk by. This irresistible come-on is just a hint of the visual pleasures within. The lush new book chronicles the work of Richard Avedon, the most influential fashion photographer of all time. Beginning in the late 1940s, Avedon bucked the convention of stiff, motionless poses by encouraging his models to move and express themselves. He also forged such an intense connection with his subjects that he often left photo shoots embarrassed over the personal details they revealed to him. From Audrey Hepburn to Veruschka to Kate Moss, the book covers all of Avedon’s most iconic fashion models and images.
There’s nothing boring about a Robert Graham shirt. Each vibrant design combines embroidered detail with printed or woven patterns, typically in eye-catching combinations. The distinctive styles reflect the attitude of designer Robert Stock, who founded the line: “Express yourself without reservation, without explanation, just feeling confident.” Recently Robert Graham has expanded beyond shirts to include other items of clothing and accessories—all of which display the trademark wit, boldness and playful individuality of the brand. To ensure that your own wardrobe is party-ready, check out the collection in the new Robert Graham shop on the first floor of Boyds.
The scent of seduction … and more You may think of men’s fragrance as a modern invention, but guys have been wearing scent for thousands of years—usually for the express purpose of driving women wild. The practice goes back at least to ancient Egypt, where men dabbed on musk oil, a proven aphrodisiac. In the centuries that followed, patchouli, sandalwood, vanilla, jasmine, myrrh and geranium all were found to be arousing to women, who are naturally endowed with a keener sense of smell than men. These natural scents found their way into men’s fragrances, where they are still used today. OK, so it may be simplistic to say that all men wear cologne with seduction in mind. The main motivation may be to please one’s partner, to project an aura of masculine power or even for one’s own olfactory enjoyment. Whatever the reason, we recommend choosing a refined scent as the finishing touch to your wardrobe. Boyds offers a selection of top brands, including Creed, Tom Ford, Prada, Zegna and Acqua di Parma. { the

Take the high road or the low road—or both. The new boots range from ankle-height to over-theknee and every length in between. All of these styles are flattering. Low boots make the leg look longer, while over-the-knee boots are exceptionally versatile (try them with skinny jeans or tights and a miniskirt). Boyds has stocked up on boots from all of these designers, and we invite you to do the same.
ALL-ACCESS PASS:
the trunk show Trunk shows are a vestige of the early days of apparel retailing, when manufacturers’ representatives would visit stores with trunks full of the latest fashions, and store owners would choose the items that best suited their customers. Nowadays, we go straight to designers’ showrooms in Milan, Naples, New York and elsewhere to select merchandise for each season. But the trunk show lives on—giving you the opportunity to see and purchase items from the entire line. Here are some of the trunk shows coming up at Boyds.
Italian flair on Chestnut “WE SERVE THE BEST HOMEMADE PASTA in Philadelphia,”
boasts Anthony Masapollo, owner of Le Castagne. “It’s what separates us from other Italian restaurants.” Beyond savory pasta dishes such as gnocchi in white truffl e cream sauce, the menu at Le Castagne features secondi piatti that range from traditional (rabbit roulade stuffed with sausage, bell peppers and basil) to updated (fi let mignon atop gorgonzola crustini with caramelized onions), and classic desserts like the tiramisu above. Other attractions are the charming atmosphere and attentive service—a reason, Masapollo believes, that Le Castagne shares many customers in common with Boyds. Proximity also helps: The restaurant is located just down the block at 1920 Chestnut Street. “Castagne,” of course, means chestnut in Italian. Call 215-751-9913 or visit www.lecastagne.com.

boyds guide} Manolo and you Few shoe designers have inspired as much worldwide devotion as Manolo Blahnik, whose new suede fringe pump is pictured below. Recently he took time for an interview with BOYDS. Most women know Manolo shoes but not the man. What should they know about you?
I hope women appreciate how
hard I work at making my shoes. It’s my life and my passion. The character Carrie Bradshaw, obsessed with “Manolos,” did a lot to popularize them in this country. Who are today’s most famous wearers of your shoes?
We never talk about our clients— but many are well known. What’s special about your autumn/winter 2009 collection?
It’s about opulent romance. After all these money worries, I want women to enjoy seeing and wearing beautiful shoes. Your shoes are famous not just for their innovative design but also for their craftsmanship. How do you ensure that?
I spend five months of the year in my factories in Italy, making sure the quality and fit never change.
Chocolate without bounds MAX BRENNER HAS TROUBLE WITH BOUNDARIES: Chocolate seeps into every aspect of his life, and he’s going with the flow. What started with a small chocolate shop in Israel 13 years ago has expanded to 28 namesake cafés stretching from Australia and Singapore to New York and, in his latest expansion, Philadelphia (15th Street between Walnut and Locust). At Max Brenner: Chocolate by the Bald Man (and he is), you’ll find the tastes, textures, smells, colors and culture of all things chocolate explored and glorified. The menu is replete with chocolate drinks, soups, fondues, updated versions of nostalgic favorites (like “urban s’mores”) and ice cream concoctions that even confirmed chocoholics might call over-the-top. Consider the Euphoria sundae—“Deep chocolate peanut butter ice cream, dulce de leche ice cream, caramelized toffee bananas, pure chocolate chunks, milk chocolate sauce, warm peanut butter sauce and chunks of chocolate fudge brownie. Garnished with whipped cream and crunchy hazelnut bits. Served with extra peanut butter sauce and very pure milk chocolate ganache.” This would be a good time to take a deep breath. Max Brenner also serves savory dishes for brunch, lunch and dinner—some of which do not escape the cocoa theme. We like the black & tan beer-battered Vidalia onion rings with dark chocolate ranch dipping sauce. Hey, any dish that combines deep frying with all five major food groups (those being beer, onions, salt, sugar and chocolate) has got to be good!
Rolex-Fest 2009: Join us October 23–24 A Rolex timepiece is coveted for its superior reliability, fine craftsmanship and iconic design. But beyond such attributes lies an extraordinary history of firsts to which few brands can lay claim. For example, did you know Rolex unveiled the world’s first waterproof and dustproof watch, the Oyster, in 1926? It featured a hermetically sealed case that worked like a safe to protect the watch’s intricate mechanism. Water resistance has remained at the heart of the Rolex identity. Each Oyster is waterproof 100 meters and is subjected to rigorous testing to ensure waterresistance beyond its guaranteed depth; the Submariner Date is impermeable to a depth of 300 meters. Pictured here is the handsome stainless steel and yellow gold Submariner model. Learn more about the anatomy and heritage of Rolex at Rolex-Fest 2009, October 23-24 at Govberg Jewelers at Boyds. During this weekend-long celebration, you’ll be able to view literally hundreds of Rolex timepieces for both men and women. 18

Behar necessity: the perfect shirt IKE BEHAR’S AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY began in Havana, where he learned custom tailoring and shirt making in his father’s shop. In 1952, with 20 years of life under his belt and $50 in his pocket, he arrived in New York and offered to work for a custom shirt maker for free to prove his skill. By the end of the week he had a paying, permanent job, and eventually he was able to buy the company. For years Ike made shirts under contract for other labels, including Ralph Lauren. It was only in the early 1980s that Ike, his wife Regina, and their sons Steven, Alan and Lawrence created the Ike Behar label. Thanks to high style, quality craftsmanship and innovations such as the diamond quilted collar, which extends durability, the brand quickly become famous. Today, as one of the last family-owned American shirt makers, Ike Behar crafts what have been called “the best of the better shirts.” We think that once you wear one, you’ll understand why. 20

Exoticism YOU CAN CARRY “Joyful, benevolent and filled with strength” is how designer Nancy Gonzalez describes the spirit of her handbag collection. She could as well be describing herself. This petite, soft-spoken mother of two made a choice that is rare for women in her native Colombia: She went into business. Employing local artisans to craft her designs and develop a model company, she has become one of the most celebrated handbag designers in the world. “Exoticisim” is a word often used to sum up the Nancy Gonzalez look, referring to her use of precious skins in distinctive colors and textures. Her handbags are also elegant and timeless, offering, as the designer puts it, “the promise of imperishable style.”
Step up to Santandrea made-to-measure When Luca Trabaldo Togna, the fifth-generation head of the famed Trabaldo Togna textile mill, was seeking tailors to do justice to his family’s premium fabrics, he decided to go large: Three years ago he purchased Sartoria Saintandrews, a 40-year-old firm in Milan, and renamed it Santandrea. It employs 165 tailors, who still produce suits by hand. A new service from Santandrea is made-to-measure, which allows a customer to order a suit based on his individual measurements and preferences. Long popular in Italy, even among men of relatively modest means, made-to-measure is becoming the standard way many American men buy their suits. “I think it’s a great upgrade in quality of life,” says Togna. Boyds is one of a handful of spots in North America that offer Santandrea’s made-to-measure service. It will take about six weeks for Santandrea’s Milanese tailors to produce your custom, hand-tailored suit, and you’ll find it well worth the wait. 22

about pants Trousers from Incotex are like classical architecture—perfectly proportioned and given structural integrity by a hundred small details of construction, many of which are invisible to the eye. From casual cotton twills to gabardine dress pants, each pair is worked by tailors until every detail is just so. Over the decades, Incotex has resisted the urge to make anything but pants, concentrating instead on achieving total mastery of one specialty item. The result is that the Venetian maker now, ahem, wears the pants in the men’s luxury trouser market. In fact, some top Italian designers whose clothes you know contract with Incotex to manufacture trousers for their own labels. Drop by Boyds and see why Incotex belongs in your closet.
The quest for
ultimate neckwear America’s preeminent maker of neckwear, Robert Talbott, started in 1950 as a cottage business. That’s when the Talbotts, Robert and Audrey, arrived in Carmel, Calif., after a full life in New York and Connecticut. Transplanting East Coast sartorial tradition to the mellow Monterey peninsula, Audrey was sewing unique bow ties for Robert and friends. The ties were such a hit that it seemed natural to turn the hobby into a business. Soon the couple was traveling to Europe and Asia, hiring the best silk mills to weave their designs. Flash forward to the present: Robert Talbott Inc. has become famous for its shirts as well as its silks, and Boyds carries both. Each season the maker introduces literally hundreds of unique necktie styles each season as part of its Handsewn, Estate and Seven Fold collections. The new ties are distinguished by their brilliant color, luxurious hand, impeccable construction and elegant knot—and they’re designed to go perfectly with Robert Talbott shirts and pocket squares.

Electric Glide What do you get when you take the body of a LOTUS ELISE and give it a green heart? The TESLA ROADSTER— a PLUG-IN THRILL RIDE that says the future really can BE ELECTRIC!
IT’S NOT JUST GASOLINE and nasty exhaust emissions the
new Tesla Roadster spares the world. As the first highperformance EV (electric vehicle), it also cuts down on noise pollution. That’s because the roar characteristic of sports cars with an internal combustion engine has been tamed to a barely audible purr by the Silicon Valley upstart. For some enthusiasts, the quiet can be disconcerting—a turnoff even—but for the eco-conscious lover of exotic cars, thinking of this debut model from Tesla Motors as the silent, stealthy type can be an automotive aphrodisiac.

If your experience of electric vehicles is limited to golf carts, the Tesla Roadster just might blow your mind. The car will take you smoothly from 0 to 60 mph—or 60 to 120, for that matter—in less than 4 seconds.
Modeled after the Lotus Elise, the carbon-fiber car weighs in

Test-driving the Tesla WHEN THE GOOD FOLKS AT VULCAN MOTOR CLUB let me play with their Tesla
Roadster for a day, I learned that the most fun thing about this vehicle, hands down, is the stunning acceleration. Turn the key in the “ignition,” or whatever you call it in an electric car, and a “beep” tells you the motor is on. There’s no engine sound, no vibration. Tap the accelerator ever so gently, and the car eases into motion like a golf cart. You could glide quietly down a parade route at 1 mph. But press down on the pedal, and now you’re Han Solo making the jump to hyper-space. What’s more, the smooth, silent, instantaneous surge of power is available at any speed. Going from 60 to 120 is the same as going from 0 to 60—a thrill that lasts a little less than 4 seconds. Whether on back roads or the highway, I found myself looking for any opportunity to unleash a sudden, massive burst of speed. My Tesla ride was not entirely silent. Besides the hum of the tires and the whistling wind, I heard a creaking spring that begged for adjustment. But I could forgive imperfections in fit and finish. This was, after all, the first generation of a brand new automotive marque. Thanks to its Lotus body, the Tesla Roadster scored big points for looks. Some guy passed me on the highway, honking, smiling and giving a thumbs up. I waved back and then smoked him, unable to resist the pleasure of punching it one more time.

My wife, Liane, is a beautiful 5’6’’ (regular height, that is), but my sons and I are very tall—Logan is 6’3’’ and Lucas is 6’8’’. The only place we can find good clothes in hard-to-fit sizes is at Boyds. Here I buy Canali suits off the rack because they run a little longer than suits by other designers, but Boyds makes me custom shirts. And since Lucas and Logan are not only tall but also slim, the Boyds tailors practically rebuild their suits to achieve a great fit. Other stores are unable to do that. There’s simply no place like Boyds.
Lloyd sports a favorite Canali madeto-measure pinstripe suit with a Boyds custom shirt and steely Ermenegildo Zegna tie. Lucas, left, wears a Paul Smith pea coat, a striped Robert Graham sportshirt and AG Jeans, while Logan has on a Belstaff leather bomber jacket, a printed Robert Graham sportshirt and 7 For All Mankind jeans.

He steers me in the direction of current fashions, but he also respects that I need to feel comfortable in order to look good in my clothes. I never feel any pressure at Boyds. Tony, my Boyds tailor, also knows exactly what I like—where my pants should sit on my waist, where the crease should break. And he won’t rest until everything is perfect. He insists that I try on every tailored piece before I take it home. If it’s not exactly right, he fits it while I wait or has it delivered to my home when it’s ready. Boyds understands something that’s critical to my business too: You can build a multimillion dollar attraction, but it won’t succeed unless the people working there can connect with your customers. Boyds is all about the whole service experience— beautiful merchandise is just the beginning.
Not to be outstyled by work associates Elmo and Abby, Robert shows his personal flair in an impeccably tailored Ermenegildo Zegna navy windowpane sportcoat and charcoal trousers with a striped Ermenegildo Zegna sportshirt.

We’ve become great friends, and we always know what’s going on in each other’s lives. She has a good eye and great taste, and she’s always truthful—in a gracious way, of course. If something looks good on me, she’ll say, “It’s beyond!” If it doesn’t, “You could do better.” We laugh so much when we’re together. Now that’s the way to shop!

Vaughan is incredibly hard to shop for, so every year the staff knows that I’ll drop by, alone, in early October. When I do, they smile and say, “Oh right, Vaughan’s birthday is coming up!” Then Richard helps me choose wonderful pieces that Vaughan always loves. Richard even remembers what I bought the previous year, so I don’t repeat myself! Actually, as I think about it, there may be one thing better than shopping for Vaughan at Boyds. Now the store carries jewelry too, and my own birthday is coming up. … 61

THE ambience is elegant, and the welcome is warm and friendly. We drive down from northern New Jersey about six times a year to stroll around and try on the outfits that Howard and Marina have selected for us. We chat with Kent and Anne and Brian. Maybe we grab some sushi at Raw, or Boyds makes dinner reservations for us. Whether we’re looking for professional clothes or haute couture—or just browsing—we know we’ll enjoy an utterly wonderful day. Service is the main reason we make the long trip. Boyds’ staff coordinates our outfits from head to toe. Their alterations are magnificent. And their pride shows: They care for our shoes and tailor our clothes even after we’ve worn them for a while. It’s clear the staff are truly happy to do what they do—and we’re truly happy they do it! We’ve been going out of our way to shop at Boyds for about a decade, and it just keeps getting better.

We dress for the trend-conscious industry we’re in. I went to Boyds to buy my first good suit —a more traditional Ralph Lauren—when I graduated from law school. After a few years, I followed my heart and started my first company with Mike: PREMIERE Sports and Entertainment. I did a wardrobe 180—from the attorney’s dress code to wearing whatever I wanted. Today my style is “classic with edge.” On a typical day, I’ll wear jeans with a slim-cut dress shirt, and I’ll add some elements that pop—say, Gucci shoes and a cool belt. My father took me to Boyds to get my wedding tux, and I can’t wait until my 4-year-old son, Sloan, is old enough for me to take him to Boyds for his first suit. These moments exemplify what Boyds is all about. ESCAPE TO THE
REETHI RAH and COCOA ISLAND offer
two visions of BEACHSIDE PARADISE
MALDIVES THINK DESERT-ISLAND PARADISE, and a variety of tropical images inevitably come to
mind: sandy beaches that are ultra-white and silky under foot, a crystal sea studded with colorful coral reefs, azure skies, perfect palm trees and, of course, quiet seclusion. If one destination matches this mental checklist, it’s the Maldives, an island republic sprawled across 56,000 square miles of the Indian Ocean. The Maldives has the distinction of being the world’s lowest-lying country; its sandy hillocks rarely reach more than a few meters above sea level. That’s because the entire country is a constellation of coral reef atolls. Twenty-six atolls comprise 1,192 small islands, only 202 of which are inhabited. Of these, about 90 are resort islands, and of the 90, perhaps 18 are truly special, the location of some of the most rarefied resorts anywhere. CONTINUED...

Perched over water, the villas at Cocoa Island emphasize barefoot luxury. The resort setting is more reef than island, as seen in the photo below; snorkeling and diving are prime activities here. At Reethi Rah (opposite), high ceilings, natural materials and minimalist style distinguish the large villas. Beachside dining—al fresco, of course—is one of several mealtime options.
While the Maldives has had occasional visitors for millennia—it was a stop on ancient Persian and Chinese trade routes—it was only in the mid-1990s that tourism took off, meaning virtually all of the resorts in the Maldives are quite new. The best of these resorts have a lot in common: Each has luxury villas of unique design. Each has extraordinary coral reefs lying just offshore, a world of rays, triggerfish, clownfish and hawksbill turtles. Each has stellar service and a great spa—because the whole point of a Maldives vacation is to send you home relaxed, recharged and refreshed. It’s why Donna Karan, Sienna Miller, Beyoncé Knowles and Sir Paul McCartney are major fans. But the approach to relaxation varies by resort. Here we present two resorts consistently rated among the best of the best, representing two ends of the relaxation spectrum: One&Only Reethi Rah makes you comfortable with electronic amenities and glamorous surroundings, while Cocoa Island epitomizes the concept of “barefoot luxury.” REETHI RAH One&Only resorts are the top-tier properties of Butch Kerzner, who developed Atlantis in the Bahamas and Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. There are just six One&Only resorts worldwide (the best-known to Americans being Palmilla at the tip of the Baja Peninsula), and what they share are sophistication without stuffiness and service that approaches six stars. Reethi Rah, located on North Malé atoll, is no different. The experience begins at the airport, where one of the hotel’s high-speed custom yachts (which doubles as a registration 90

desk) whisks you to the property, one of the few islands in the Maldives that has been expanded, in this case to six times its original size. There are 130 large villas, some set on stilts over the water. The beach villas have outdoor king-sized sun beds set on private infinity pools next to the beach. In a country renowned for its spas, Reethi Rah sets the bar high. An ESPA spa offers 10 treatment rooms and many ayurvedic therapies, not to mention signature treatments like the ESPA Energy Equalizer with Volcanic Hot Stones. There’s a yoga pavilion, women-only areas and multi-day Wellness Journeys, such as the seven-day Holistic Fitness journey. The choice of restaurants at Reethi Rah is superb. Fanditha serves Lebanese cuisine on tables placed on the sand as well as in Arabian-style tents; Tapasake offers Japanese fusion; Reethi Restaurant has an international menu. And the remote location is no barrier to gastronomic excellence. Sushi-grade fish is flown in from Tokyo, free-range lamb from Australia, strawberries from Belgium. Reethi Rah ranks number 17 for food—in the world, mind you—on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List 2009 of the Best Hotels in the World. COCOA ISLAND Cocoa Island has a deceptive simplicity, not unlike that of its sister Como resort, Parrot Cay, half a world away in the Turks & Caicos. It’s as if the humble but well-located beach shack has

Soaring spaces and opulent design mark the spa at Reethi Rah (left). The resort has no shortage of options for soaking, from swimming pools—seen above is just one of the 40—to spa treatments (right). Known for gourmet fare, both Cocoa Island and Reethi Rah fly in fresh food from the world over. Below, seared tuna from Cocoa’s Asian-influenced menu.
been made over with cool urban chic. Cocoa lies in South Malé atoll, a 35-minute speedboat transfer from the international airport. Hotelier Christina Ong’s philosophy prevails here, so the property remains a simple islet covered with palms, wild sea grapes and hibiscus, encircled by a reef with proverbial gin-clear waters. The resort is small, just 33 rooms, and its architecture unusual. Serpentine wooden walkways lead out to each accommodation, which is set on stilts, with baby sharks and reef fish circling below. There are rooms, suites, loft suites and loft villas, the latter with kitchen and private butler. The Dhoni suites are built to resemble local fishing boats. Surrounded by water, they actually look like floating boats, but they are firmly secured on stilts. Each has a full-length glass wall, giving you a sweeping view of the Indian Ocean from your bed. Inside they are airy indeed, with high cathedral ceilings. Bathrooms are huge, with separate shower and tub. But it’s the natural materials that are standouts. There are lots of white fabrics, including Frette sheets. The furnishings are wood and understated, floors are teak, and the overall mood rather Zen-like. Maybe the single biggest reason to choose Cocoa Island is the Shambhala Retreat, widely considered among the best spas in the Maldives. If you’re pining for an Abhyanga Ayurvedic massage or a two-hour Como Shambhala Ritual massage, go for it. After a morning of yoga on the beach, of course. This place has a massive reputation among devotees of yoga, and some of the world’s leading instructors hang out here. Cuisine is a major part of your stay at any Como property, and at the Ufaa restaurant, which is thatched with alang alang grass, you sit on large sofas and cushions. You can expect Indian-, Sri Lankan- and Thai-style cuisine, or you can elect low-fat, organic Como Shambhala cuisine. At Cocoa Island, you can literally snorkel from your room to reef. And if you’ve ever contemplated learning to dive, these calm waters would be the place

SKIING 1 MILLION ACRES, B.C. Revelstoke and Kicking Horse are North America’s new frontier of lift-served skiing IF YOU’VE EVER BEEN STUCK in ski traffic on I-70 in Colorado and longed
for a more remote mountain experience, consider heading north to British Columbia—not to the coastal mega-resort of Whistler Blackcomb, where you risk being bummed out by rain at the base, but to the interior of B.C., where you’re guaranteed light powder, freedom from crowds, gorgeous vistas and improved bragging rights when you return home. The two up-and-coming B.C. resorts generating big buzz are Kicking Horse and Revelstoke, and they have a lot in common. Both are hard to get to: Prepare for a long flight and a lengthy (but traffic-free!) mountain drive. And both are big, demanding mountains, like Jackson Hole or Snowbird—family destinations, sure, but also places where hard-core skiers and boarders can really put testosterone levels to the test. This is skiing’s new frontier, remote mountains that were colonized by heli-skiing operations and a handful of über-fit backcountry powder hounds. Now that they’ve opened as resorts, savvy skiers have discovered that the reward for a long road trip is a heli-skiing experience without the peril or expense of a helicopter, amidst jaw-dropping scenery. Start with Kicking Horse, which opened in late 2000. You get there by flying to Calgary and then driving two-and-a-half hours along the TransCanada Highway to the mining and timber town of Golden, B.C. Kicking Horse had humble beginnings as a locals-only area called Whitetooth, accessed via a gravel road and a single-lane bridge, with a log cabin as a day lodge. The lone chairlift carried a few hundred skiers a day.

Where is everyone? With endless mountain views, ample powder and freedom from crowds, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort offers that top-of-the-world feeling.

But then Vancouver architect Oberto Oberti and partner Ballast Nedam Canada Ltd. arrived and spent $150 million U.S., with another $100 million scheduled to be spent here by 2010. What really kick-started Kicking Horse was the installation of the
