FOR YEARS AUTOMAKERS HAVE LOOKED TO ONE VEHICLE TO DRIVE THEIR R&D. THIS YEAR, THEY’LL LOOK TO THREE. Innovation sparks imitation. And in the realm of automotive innovation, perhaps no vehicle has more to imitate than the Lexus LS. From the world’s first Advanced Parking Guidance System to the world’s first eight-speed automatic transmission, the LS introduces one breakthrough after another, continually changing the industry’s notion of what is possible in a luxury car. And with an entire line of vehicles, including the world’s first V8 hybrid, the LS is no longer simply at the forefront of innovation - it’s the catalyst that drives innovation forward.

A View to a Thrill Like the characters in the classic E.M. Forster novel, experienced travelers know that a hotel room’s view can set the tone for an entire trip. A Room with a View is a luxurious picture book—a compendium of Condé Nast Traveler’s signature final pages—that showcases the best vistas from the best hotel rooms around the world. Relaxing in your favorite chair at home, you can, with this tome, gaze at the Taj Mahal in the distant mist, the brilliantly colored onion domes of St. Basil’s in Moscow or a sailboat scudding in the blue and green waters off Miami—and much more. For more details, visit the book’s publisher at www.assouline.com.
CAN A WOMAN LOOK dropdead stylish and professional at the same time? In Armani Collezioni, available at Boyds, she can. Armani Collezioni clothes remain true to the designer’s aesthetic, with their impeccable shapes and proportions, clean lines and attention to detail. The color palette ranges from mineral shades like twine and stone to delicate tones such as ocean green and peau d’ange coral. For spring the line’s theme is “contemporary glamour,” and it is carried out in shirtdresses and shirts in flowing patterns, as well as softly cut trousers and pencil skirts. Since this is Armani, there are fabulous jackets to be had as well—like the one in herringbone jersey at right.
Straight Up with a Twist Adam Derrick, footwear specialist at To Boot New York, takes pride in his ability to infuse his tradition-inspired collections with the spirit of modern menswear trends. Handcrafted in small Italian factories, each pair of shoes undergoes 200 steps in the journey from concept to final design. Derrick ensures that To Boot footwear is made of only the finest Italian and French-cut leathers and soles, making the company’s shoes and boots both stylish and durable. In addition to offering classic styles in dress shoes (lace-ups, slip-ons and loafers), To Boot New York’s spring line boasts plenty of casual options with sandals, moccasins and sleek drivers. See them for yourself at To Boot’s trunk show at Boyds on April 24.

{ the
boyds guide } FOR THE COOL CUSTOMER:
RAG & BONE Unable to find jeans they considered worthy, Rag & Bone’s Marcus Wainwright and David Neville formed their label with the idea of creating the perfect pair-—and more. Their vision: to make clothes their friends would love to wear every day. The company’s name comes from the old English tradition of “rag and bone men”— enterprising sorts who collected rags and other odds and ends for resale. And while the designers acknowledge the influence of English tailoring on their work, they pride themselves on producing their goods in traditional U.S. factories. Meticulous attention to detail gives way to understated but cool clothing. “It takes a certain customer to appreciate that,” Neville says. “We’ve found ourselves most popular with the fashion-minded, educated consumer.” Sound like you? Check out the Rag & Bone selects next time you visit Boyds.

Spring Re-awakening OUR BOYDS CUSTOMERS ARE BUSY, accomplished, great-looking—and deserving of a soul-soothing spa break. That’s why we’ve arranged a special offer at the Spa at The Four Seasons Hotel just for you. This five-star urban sanctuary is the perfect place to recharge and refresh (and you need not be a hotel guest to visit the spa). How to choose from among the many massages, scrubs, polishes and special treatments? Well, the Philadelphia Freedom Hot Towel Infusion is a favorite: It releases tension in the muscles by blending massage with steamed towels dipped with revitalizing herbs. And just in time for the warmer months, try the special Spring/Summer Citrus Renewal: a complete body treatment with a lemon polish scrub, hot towel wrap and foot paraffin treatment, topped off with an invigorating head, neck and scalp massage for ($150 for 50 minutes). SPECIAL OFFER FOR BOYDS READERS: Bring this page when you book any 50- or 80-minute treatment and receive $40 off your entire bill. (Please note that this offer cannot be combined with any other promotional offers or discounts, and is subject to availability.) The spa is at One Logan Square and spa services are available every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Call (215) 963-1500.
Each season, the Marc by Marc Jacobs line gives fashion followers something to talk about. This spring, his footwear collection is a lot like its counterpart clothing line: unpredictable, fun and cool, but with a functional sensibility. Spring and summer styles run the gamut, featuring embellished espadrilles to metallic open-toe flats to colorful low platforms (good-bye, long nights suffering in painful stilettos). Check out the collection in the women’s store shoe salon on the third floor, along with other leading footwear designers, including Lanvin, Giuseppe Zanotti and Gucci.

LIKE FATHER,
LIKE SON Designer Martin Gordon is a surprisingly laid-back sort who prides himself on making comfortable, stylish clothing for men at accessible price points—without sacrificing high quality. After many years of working for other designers, Gordon eventually set out to create his own line of mostly classic t-shirts, silk and cotton shirts, knits and basic pants. He designs for the practical guy who wants to look great without having to over-think his wardrobe choices. Using natural fibers, the full sportswear collection is filled with casual, low-key options that work well with an active man’s lifestyle. “My line is contemporary enough for the son and classic enough for the father,” he says. “So you could be 30 or even 60 years old and wear it!” Come find your Gordon comfort zone at Boyds, first floor.

Boyds carries an extensive selection from the top maker, Carrot & Gibbs. Remember: The key to bow-tie cool is to tie it yourself. You can do it! Here’s how: 1. Slide the tie under your collar. Allow one end of the tie to hang about two inches lower than the other end.
2. Bring the longer end across the shorter end.
3, Pass the longer end under the shorter end and upward, forming the first part of the knot. Pull tight to the shirt collar.
6. Pass the hanging end under the front loop. Use your index finger to bend the end in the middle (at the widest part), and poke your finger through the open part of the knot. Now you have formed the back loop of the bow. 7. Gently pull the bow at both folded ends to tighten the knot. Hint: This is exactly the same knot most people use to tie a shoelace.
8. Adjust to taste. Smooth bow or dimpled? Loose or tight? You don’t want to be too precise; “perfectly imperfect” is the look you’re going for.
Spring bows: Shown here are just a few designs from Boyds’ vast
4. Form the front loop of the bow by doubling up the shorter, hanging end and placing it across the collar points.
5. Hold the front loop between your index finger and thumb. Drop the long end down over the front loop.

To entice weekend travelers, Atlantic City resorts keep, well, upping the ante. For your next getaway, consider the Chairman Tower, a gleaming recent 480-foot addition to the Trump Taj Mahal. The Chairman Suites make the most of the great boardwalk location, with floor-to-ceiling windows for wave-watching. The one-bedroom suites are well-sized at 1,000 square feet, with one-and-a-half baths, a combination living room/kitchen and a private bar. For more information, visit www.trumptaj.com.
THE LIGHTER SIDE OF LORO PIANA Loro Piana is justly famed for its exquisite wools and cashmeres, which the family-owned company has produced and sold since the early 19th century. The materials, with their hand-combed animal fibers from Mongolia, Peru and beyond, are meticulously woven at the company’s factory in Quarona, Italy. Less well known is the fact that Loro Piana makes fabrics that work beautifully in warm climates as well. The company produces summer-weight cashmeres, merinos and vicuñas, as well as linens and cottons par excellence. Since Loro Piana’s business structure allows it to control all aspects of production—from selection of raw materials through distribution of finished product—it only made sense for the company to evolve into a designer of clothing as well, as it has done over the past two decades. The intended consumer for these goods? Someone with a taste for discreet elegance as well as sybaritic comfort. Shown at right is Loro Piana’s pure cotton jersey “Verlaine” jacket, a sweatshirtstyle interpretation of the classic blue blazer.

boyds guide } Exploring The Feminine Factor Fans of the Philosphy di Alberta Ferretti line include hot young Hollywood types like Ali Larter, Emmy Rossum and January Jones. They, like so many women, show off to best advantage in the type of gauzy, float-y, intricately detailed cocktail dress for which Philosophy is best known. The romantic and fun spring collection is highlighted by whimsical prints of eyes, butterflies and lips. It’s been called the type of clothing a woman wears when she wants to feel like a goddess. Ferretti herself refuses to typecast the line, saying enigmatically that the name Philosophy indicates only “something that cannot be imposed.” Decide for yourself when you visit the Philosophy selection in the women’s store on the third floor.
ROME AROUND CHEF MARC VETRI AND CO-OWNER JEFF BENJAMIN LINED up all the right ingredients for their third and latest venture, Amis Trattoria, at 412 S. 13th Street. Two years in the making, Amis (or “friends” in the Bergamascan dialect) is an Italian tapas-style restaurant with a mix of delicious dishes and a lively, inviting atmosphere. Best described as a high-end casual dining destination, the space has an old-world industrial feel, with an open kitchen, brick walls and large rusticlooking wooden tables. The menu consists of mostly small dishes made for sharing. Try the light, refreshing escarole salad topped off with sweet apples and radishes. The salumi is all house-made and the fresh seafood fritto misto comes with zucchini waffle chips. The fried artichokes are already a customer favorite, as are the rigatoni with swordfish and eggplant fries. Amis has a vibrant bar scene and the kitchen stays open late most nights. à la mode Fabric, design, construction, fit and price—those are the hallmarks of intrinsic value in the Trussini collection of fine menswear. The Trussini silhouette is a modern classic. Jackets are light and comfortable to wear, drape naturally on the body and give the wearer an effortless elegance. For this reason—and the fact that Trussini is well-priced in comparison to other top Italian brands—the line is a favorite among Boyds customers. It’s now offered in 50 top-tier specialty stores, including Mario’s in Seattle, Stanley Korshak in Dallas and Larrimor’s in Pittsburgh. Boyds launched the Trussini collection in the United States, and continues to house the largest selection available in the U.S. and Canada. Men who favor less conservative styling and are ready to explore the greatness of Neapolitan tailoring need look no further than Isaia. Blending his love for both the traditional and the contemporary, head designer and third-generation artisan Gianluca Isaia maintains a fine dedication to handcraftsmanship and strict attention to detail. “The typical Isaia man is witty, sophisticated, charming in an unconventional way and zealous about living life to the fullest,” says Isaia. “A man should have fun with his wardrobe, and his clothes should be an expression of who he is.” Express yourself this season and check out the flattering silhouettes, clean lines and intricate detailing of this finetailored brand at Boyds.

The Maserati GranTurismo delivers it all: Pininfarina looks, performance, comfort and the throatiest engine on the road
BY MARIA LISSANDRELLO
JUST A GLANCE AT THE MASERATI GRANTURISMO in all its curvy glory tells you
this two-door 2+2 coupé is a modern-day classic. No surprise, given its lineage: From nose to tail, the car is a stylish paean to its aerodynamic ancestor, the
original 1947 GranTurismo. Known as the AG 1500 GT, that Pininfarina gem was the first Maserati built for the road, not the raceway, and today’s version follows suit with bold fenders arching closely around 20-inch wheels, a long nose with strong V-shaped lines and dramatic wide-set headlights. As for its most distinctive feature—the trident studding the large concave grille—it arguably stands as the automotive world’s most elegant emblem. But looks aren’t the only thing that makes the GranTurismo so damn, well, sexy: In a 2008 study by British luxury car insurer Hiscox, a whopping 100 percent of female participants had a marked biological response to the mere sound of Maserati’s V8 engine. Turns out the same sexy snarl that gets
With its sophisticated design and superior balance, the GranTurismo owns the curves—both visually and literally. State-of-the-art suspension means smooth driving even at high speeds, but the GT also functions as an elegant touring machine.

We’re proud of our commitment to keeping things “the way they used to be” by manufacturing right here in the United States. I get that same “old school” feeling when I shop at Boyds. Their traditional approach to customer service is refreshing in this day and age. I love that Boyds gives you the option of buying great Italian brands off the rack or having clothes made to measure by those same labels. Zegna Couture made a velvet tux and some really special one-off suits for me. I also have a Kiton cashmere suit that came off the rack at Boyds—I have to say, they made it fit likes it’s custom. Sergio does all my tailoring, and the result is impeccable. He’s the best! Shopping at Boyds can be social, and I often run into friends at the store. I go often, usually on a Wednesday night or a Saturday afternoon. It’s great to meet up there and then head out on the town.

Naturally I called Boyds, and sure enough they came to the rescue. When I arrived, Ramonita greeted me with an amazing selection of dresses she’d pulled for me. Within minutes I found my dream gown, a stunning electric blue Zac Posen. The alterations were done immediately, and I picked up my new dress on the way to Washington, D.C., with the warm feeling of having just been treated like a princess. I started shopping at Boyds for gifts for my husband. On one trip, I meandered over to the women’s shoe department, and the rest is history! Boyds has finely edited collections you don’t find elsewhere. Marina really pushes me to venture out of my style comfort zone, helping me find skirts, slacks and jackets for work that fit my personality. One of my first purchases for myself was a gorgeous 1950s-inspired black-and-white Behnaz Sarafpour skirt, which has since become a staple item in my wardrobe. I just love that skirt.

{ boyds stories } KIRK: CAN YOU IMAGINE A COSMETIC SURGEON WEARING JEANS AND SNEAKERS? Being in the business of making people look good means I need to look good, too. I’ve been a loyal customer of Boyds for 20 years now. It really is the only one-stop shop for men in Philadelphia. A few years ago Boyds sponsored a fashion show for a fundraising event Stephanie co-chaired. I went to select my outfit and Bill said, “Why don’t you switch it up and try something contemporary?” My Etro suit was a huge hit that night. I looked in the mirror and thought, “Wow! I look just like a Beverly Hills surgeon from Dr. 90210!” Stephanie: My first Boyds experience was in January 1997, when I realized at 3 p.m. on the day of a ball that I had forgotten to pack my evening handbag. Kirk assured me a quick trip to Boyds would take care of my fashion crisis, and it did. We found the perfect clutch, which has been a favorite of mine ever since. Even though I have very long legs and arms, Boyds always has a big selection of sportswear that fits me. I also do a lot of volunteer work and like to look professional for meetings. Ralph Lauren, Armani, Tory Burch and Milly are what I tend to purchase. I have this one powder blue Armani jacket that I’m surprised isn’t threadbare! It never fails to make me feel dynamite.

On any given day, I may meet with fashion designers, advertisers and the occasional celebrity or two. Whether I’m doing business in New York or D.C., relaxing at home or simply going to the office in Philadelphia, my everyday wear consists of a great pair of slacks, a freshly pressed shirt, a perfectly fitted blazer and a well-made pair of shoes. I get much of my sartorial sense from my father, who has always been a natty dresser. When I was younger he would take me to the original Boyds—back when it was located on Market Street—and we’d spend the day perusing the clothes as Ralph Yaffe gave us sage fashion advice. Ralph also helped me pick out my first suit, and through the years, he consistently has been my go-to guy for wardrobe choices. One reason I stay so loyal to Boyds is their dedication to keeping Philadelphia stylish. Another is that I know when I enter the store, I will leave with exactly what I was looking for. Their full-service experience is precisely what a constantly-on-the-move businessman like me needs, and I can easily find it at Boyds.
John’s casual style means business. Here, he’s ready to multitask in a light blue Canali jacket with a mini houndstooth pattern, complemented by a Canali blue patterned pocket square and tan linen trousers. Shoes by Ferragamo; Rolex Daytona watch from Govberg Jewelers. SPRING

THE THEME OF CONVENIENCE P E R VA D E S E V E R Y T H I N G I D O , both at work—at TD Bank, we pride ourselves on being “America’s Most Convenient Bank”—and in my personal life. That’s why Boyds is my clothing store. It’s rare for me to spend more than an hour there at a time because, after 20 years, Ramonita knows me so well. She knows my daughter, too. When I first started shopping at Boyds, my daughter was just a toddler. Mackenzie is now almost 21 and shops there herself. And if I’m shopping for my daughter, I’m always confident that, with Ramonita’s help, I’m buying her the right pieces. I wear mostly Akris and Escada, but also have a lot of Armani, which I often get tailored—at no extra charge, of course! It’s extremely reassuring to know that all alterations are guaranteed for the life of the garment. Over time, I’ve watched the women’s section develop from just one rack to an entire floor. The female influence on the store has been phenomenal. I’m at the point where I’ll see an item I like at another store but refuse to buy it unless I confirm with Ramonita that Boyds doesn’t carry it. I would feel as if I were cheating!

Going to the store with my mom, dad and brother was always a special event. And it was extra-special when we would “suit up” my grandfather. Way back in the early ’70s, my father took me to the store’s previous location to shop for my Bar Mitzvah. I remember my eyes going straight for that burgundy velour suit! Recently I took my own two sons to Boyds for their first suits. There was no velour in sight, of course, but we had the same great service, which never changes, and the same sense of a special family occasion. At the law firm and in court, my work “uniform” is classic with a bit of an edge. I wear mostly custom-made Italian suits. Kenny has definitely helped bring me into the 21st century. There’s a certain level of comfort knowing they really won’t let you walk out of the store unless everything looks perfect.

One Saturday afternoon when we had just started dating, I suggested a trip into the city to check out the store. Joe helped me pick out contemporary suits, while Richard matched all the shirts, ties and shoes. It was getting pretty late, so Joe suggested a great local Italian spot—the first of many Boyds-anddinner dates. Jacklyn: When we got engaged, Marc and I felt a genuine sense of excitement from the Boyds team. Marc of course went straight to Boyds when it was time to choose his wedding tuxedo. It was like shopping with his buddies, he told me. Our everyday clothes are pretty casual. Marc and I wear a lot of denim, and Boyds always has a fabulous selection of jeans. Shoes, too. And handbags for me! The day we found out we were expecting Zachary [now age 10 months], we stopped by the store, and I pointed to a red Valentino bag. I had no idea that Marc gave the “go-ahead nod” when I wasn’t looking. I was completely surprised when it was delivered to the house later that week!

I ’ V E A LWAY S B E E N V E R Y I N T O F A S H I O N , so when I moved to the area from the South, I had to find the best men’s clothing store in town. As a funeral director, I do find it interesting that the store’s location was originally a funeral home. Clearly, Boyds and I were meant to be together! My line of work obviously requires a conservative dress code—dark solids or pinstripes. If I order 15 shirts, 12 of them are going to be white. Bill Bolling handles my suits—I now have close to 100 of them, mostly Trussini and Canali. Boyds’ customer service? It’s over the top. There is nothing they won’t do for a customer. I travel quite a bit for work. I’ve gone to Boyds first thing in the morning, needing a suit for the next day, and it’s ready for me before the day is even over. I even had my staff visit the store once just to see what true customer service means. The sales associates never seem to sit down. I’ll often stop in unannounced—sometimes two, three times a day! I like hanging out there. It’s an amazing place. Gregory likes his business attire to be conservative, but always distinctive. What’s working for him here: a Brioni charcoal gray and tan pinstripe single-breasted suit, Individualized shirt, Michelle Sartori pink tie and pocket square, Daniel Dolce cufflinks and Trafalgar braces.

My wife was thrilled when we found Boyds. She said, “They understand me; they really get it!” We even had her birthday party there—a day of shopping with champagne and a fashion show. Where else can you do that? Being in the restaurant business, I really respect superior customer treatment. That’s what I
Jeff Benjamin & Marc Vetri Partners, Vetri, Osteria and Amis Restaurants; Co-Founders, The Vetri Foundation for Children get at Boyds each and every time I go. It makes a world of difference. Marc: About eight years ago I had an epiphany when I came home from a black-tie event. My tux was shredding, had a button missing, and had creases so awful that an 800-pound iron wouldn’t have helped. It was from my freshman year of college. I threw it in the garbage and soon after went to Boyds, where I purchased my first “real” piece of clothing, a Canali tuxedo. But as you can see from this photograph, I prefer casual, contemporary clothes, and Boyds is the place to get them. When I visit the store, I’ll have an idea of what I’m looking for; then I let Patrick lead the way. It’s kind of the same thing at Vetri: People come in with an idea of what they want to eat, and I lead them through the menu.
Superb presentation: Jeff wears a Trussini suit, Ike Behar shirt, Robert Graham tie and Santoni cap toe shoes; Marc stays cool in an Armani jacket, Robert Graham shirt, PRPS denim and Prada orange patent sneakers.

I was spending the afternoon in Center City with my father and we went into the store so I could buy a new overcoat. I was so impressed by the experience, I think it helped spark my interest in fashion. Today I buy most of my casual clothes at Boyds, including a lot of denim, shoes, shirts and sweaters. I especially love Hudson and 7 for All Mankind for my jeans. In addition, all of my dress clothes come from Boyds. My favorite suit is a Trussini in charcoal gray with white pinstripes. All these years later, the store still has that warm and hospitable atmosphere that impressed me 16 years ago. The staff knows how to cater to your needs and personalize your shopping experience. Because I travel heavily for work—I am on the road about 70 percent of the year—I need to use my time in Philadelphia wisely. Richard knows me the best and pays close attention to all the little details. He is especially great at getting me in and out of the store quickly!

Jeff Glass helped me pick out my very first, a pinstripe by Calvin Klein. I will never forget his words: “That sure is a bold suit, Daniel.” Bold is exactly how I want to look, in the sense of appearing confident and commanding. My firm specializes in labor and employment law. We have a reputation for vigorously representing many types of businesses, and it’s important for me to dress the part. I shop at Boyds a few times a month, and I tell you, it really feels like I’m going to see friends and family. Howard is my suit guy, and Janet helps me pick out everything else. My favorite brands are Donna Karan, Trussini, Ralph Lauren and Zegna because I like the way they fit. I’m not the type of guy who buys things he doesn’t need, but when I find something I really like, I’ll splurge a little. I bought a pair of black lace-up shoes by To Boot New York. I liked them so much that I bought another pair in a different style—and then a pair of each style in brown. And why not? People do judge you by your shoes, you know.

HOLIDAY SAIL ALONG THE DALMATIAN COAST OF CROATIA, and you’ll see more than a thousand islands. Scat-
tered like gemstones, with the mainland mountains as a backdrop, they’re part of one of the most scenic coastlines in Europe. Some are no more than rocky outcroppings, while others are topped with pine forests or vineyards, islands that are home to fishing villages and lively port towns. You could spend many summers sailing the beautiful waters of the Adriatic, seeking paradise. But you could save yourself time simply by asking a well-traveled native to name the most beautiful of all of the islands. Chances are, the reply would be “Korcula.” Twenty miles long and no wider than five miles, Korcula lies about 100 miles from Dubrovnik and just a mile off the Croatian coast. It was once covered with pine trees and thus called Kerkyra Malaina (Black Corfu) by Greeks, who settled here around 400 B.C. When you board a ferry in Orebic or Split to make the journey, you’re crossing to an island that is the essence of fairy-tale Europe, a place you imagined existed in the past but had long since disappeared. That fairy-tale CONTINUED . . .

Located in north-central Italy, the Trussini factory employs about 100 skilled designers, tailors, seamstresses and artisans. It’s a modern facility allowing for precision and consistency in pattern making, cutting, assembly and finishing. Suit jackets and sportcoats feature full canvas lining and hand stitching throughout. The fabrics are great, the quality is exceptional and the value is unsurpassed. Launched in the US in 1998, Trussini has quickly become a respected and nationally well known fine Italian tailored clothing brand. These pot stills at the sprawling Midleton Distillery produce brands ranging from Jameson to Redbreast. flavor profile. There’s no mistaking Redbreast for an American whiskey, although it is plenty sweet. You might well peg it for a Speyside Scotch, given the fruit and floral notes. Displaying tremendous complexity on the nose and palate, this whiskey requires some quiet time (in my case, by the fireside during a snowstorm) for one to plumb the developing aromas and tastes. There is ripe fruit on the nose, some sherry and vanilla, and a resinous, linseed-like tang. I also found a pleasing note of rye spice, although no rye is used in the mash. Redbreast is positively fat on the tongue. Roll

Saint James Paris
TUCKED AWAY IN THE TRANQUIL, tony 16th
Arrondissement, the Saint James Paris has the air of a London club and a name to match. That’s no accident. The château-like hotel, built in 1892 as a residence for France’s best students, was converted to a private club in the 1980s by Peter de Savary, the English entrepreneur. This was part of a string of Saint James Clubs worldwide, which he later sold to finance the Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle, Scotland. The French family that bought the Saint James Paris from de Savary continues to run it as a private club and also as a luxury hotel. Its 48 guest rooms and suites were created by Andrée Putman, the doyenne of French interior design. When I stayed at the Saint James last Christmas, my favorite room was the library bar, pictured at left, where 8,000 volumes co-exist with a slightly smaller selection of cognacs and whiskies. Although it long ago passed from his ownership, de Savary still calls the Saint James Paris Set back from the street, the Saint

Animal allies Chase and Jennifer Utley, cofounders of Utley All-Star Animals, know they’ve chosen a tough issue to champion. “Animal abuse is a disturbing and terribly sad topic,” Jen Utley acknowledges. “But we need to get the word out about the success stories that are possible.” To raise awareness, the Utleys enlisted an all-star partner: Boyds, which hosted a fundraiser for the cause. “Boyds was fantastic to work with because it is a high-profile store with a clientele that extends far beyond Center City,” says Jen. Along with exhibits, the evening included a silent auction of plaster dogs decorated by several of Chase’s Phillies teammates. The event raised $7,000 for the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA). Fundraising efforts continue. On April 29, the couple will host the third annual invitation-only Utley All-Star Animals Casino Night; this summer, look for the Phillies Wives’ annual “Save a Pet at the Park” night. In the meantime, Jen Utley has a plea for those who want to help animals: Donate to the PSPCA. Adopt a pet—literally if you can, or via a paid “sponsorship,” which includes paying for a pet’s spay/neuter procedure, food and shelter until a home is found. “That program has been so successful for us,” says Jen. “People feel a bond with the animal they sponsor and often find it a home. And that’s our goal: to find these animals a home and a better life.” For more information, visit www.chaseutley.com or www.pspca.org. 2
