n the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple news outlets reported a disturbing trend: an increase in unexplained strokes in young and middle-aged adults. Researchers wondered about possible links between COVID-19 and the most common AYMAN IBRAHIM, DO type of stroke,
acute ischemic stroke, which occurs when a blood clot develops in an artery and restricts or stops blood flow to the brain. “At the beginning of the pandemic, we in the medical community thought that COVID-19 significantly increased the risk for stroke,” says neurologist Ayman Ibrahim, DO, Director of the Stroke Program at Clara Maass Medical Center. “Now we’ve had many studies done and found that is not the case.” Here, he explains the latest thinking on COVID-19 and strokes.
