here do you find your inspiration? Alan Greenspan, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve, was said to get many of his ideas for managing the nation’s money supply while soaking in the bathtub. If only our own luxurious immersions were similarly inspiring. For most of us, tub time serves as an opportunity to bathe and a serene respite from the distractions of the day. Sure there are tubs that promise to make daily ablutions unforgettable. But bathrooms
too can inspire. One Princeton homeowner found it in the ladies’ room of one of her favorite local restaurants. A maple vanity she saw there served as a sample and was built by an area woodworker. And while there was no bathtub in that establishment’s loo, that vanity spurred the homeowner’s imagination and caused her to choose a kidney-shaped soaking tub and a shell-like sconce to complement the room’s otherwise rectilinear design. Turn to “A Rancher Reborn” on page 50. And you know the old saying about a picture being worth a thousand words? Well, a Tewksbury homeowner who wanted “something that nobody else has” challenged kitchen guru Peter Salerno to use an image of an abandoned blue car rusting away in a cornfield to contemplate the possibilities for a new kitchen. Check out “Picture This…” on page 70. Nature is often cited as a source of an inspiration and such was the case for a designer whose client yearned for a comfy, kick-off-yourshoes vacation condo. In “Beachy Keen” on page 58, you’ll see how a seaside palette reveals the soothing power of simplicity. Of course, ideas abound if you know where to look. Let’s say, for example, that you love to travel. Learn to be a resourceful browser by noting the design elements in hotel rooms, lobbies, bars and bathrooms. That’s just what we did, and you’ll find some great concepts for cool wallpaper in “Off the Walls” on page 98. Now if you’ll excuse me, the water’s running.

What’s up, what’s new and what to do.
Bud buddy
A stem or two of your favorite flower is often all you need to brighten up your desk at work or a lackluster corner of your living room. But arranging just a few flowers can get tricky. That’s where the Anywhere Vases from Fruitsuper Design come in. These simple cork-backed shapes (the set comes with a triangle, a square and a circle) rest on your vase (or even a drinking glass), making your buds look just right. (Anywhere Vases, fruitsuper.com, $38/3)
Greek Murals
The works of the prolific, albeit anonymous, ancient Greek vase artist known as the Berlin Painter are on display through June 11 at the Princeton University Art Museum. The exhibit, “The Berlin Painter and His World: Athenian Vase-Painting in the Early Fifth Century BC,” showcases 54 pieces created by the mystery muralist. The exhibit is free. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Visit artmuseum.princeton.edu for more information.

gallery
If you’ve driven by the colorful, windowless monstrosity that is the current exterior of the American Dream shopping and entertainment complex at the Meadowlands, you’ll be glad to learn that the developer who took over the project back in 2011 has released new images of what the exterior will look like when it finally opens in the fall of 2018, and it’s a definite improvement! The new renderings show a white façade with lots of glass-enclosed spaces. It’s pretty much the opposite of what the building looks like now. The new design gives the project a “more contemporary, pristine aesthetic,” according to a statement released by the developer. The mall is more than 70 percent leased, with Saks 5th Avenue and Lord & Taylor committed as anchors.

Natural beauty
When you think of modern design, you don’t necessarily think of nature. But the Elm Branch dresser from Ralph Pucci, part of the “After the Storm” collection by designers Chris Lehrecke and Gabriella Kiss, blends those two concepts beautifully. Bronze “mushroom” drawer pulls look like they are growing right out of the acid-ebonized white oak, and a large branch adorns the bottom. The result? A piece that’s streamlined, striking and utilitarian.
A glimpse of the Gilded Age
22
| gallery
A rare and largely unaltered survivor of “Millionaire’s Row”—Madison Avenue in Morris Township, where large and elegant estate homes were once owned by Gilded Age millionaires—will be open to the public when Alnwick Hall, known in recent years as “The Abbey,” opens for the designer showhouse “Mansion in May” this spring. Funds raised from the showhouse, which will be held every day in May, will help establish the new Center for Nursing Innovation and Research at the Morristown Medical Center. With more than 20,000 square feet, the brick mansion has attracted the attention of leading designers from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania who will transform 42 interior spaces for public and private tours and events. The stately home, designed by architect Percy Griffin, was built between 1903 and 1904 for Edward Peter Meany and his wife Rosalie. It was modeled after various 15th- and 16thcentury English estates, including Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England. Meany was legal counsel for the American Telephone and Telegraph Company for many years and was later appointed to the post of Judge Advocate of the New Jersey National Guard. For more information and tickets, visit mansioninmay.org.

Art abounds A massive new art space has opened in Newark, in the renovated Hahne’s building, which once housed the department store but has been closed since the 1980s. Express Newark is Rutgers University-Newark’s 50,000-square-foot arts incubator that includes spaces for artists in residence, a print shop, a 3D printing studio, video production and portrait studios, classrooms and a public art gallery. Organizers say they hope the public arts spaces will make residents feel connected to the area. “We want people who walk past the building to feel included,” said Express Newark co-director Anne Schaper Englot. Also new on the art scene is a contemporary gallery that opened on Park Avenue in Rutherford last fall. Named after the mythical beast, Harpy (pictured above) is owned by Michael Olivo, who attended University of the Arts, studying illustration, but ultimately receiving a BFA in painting/drawing. He opened the gallery to give his peers a space to show their work. Monthly exhibitions consist of two to three artists who all emphasize the figurative. Upcoming exhibitions feature emerging artists Taylor Carpenter, Andy Cahill, Jesse Balmer, Elle Michalka, Sam Vanallemeersch and Lale Westvind.
Midcentury magic
There’s no doubt that midcentury modern design has been a perpetual favorite thanks to its hallmark clean lines and attention to detail. But if you go too far with it, your home could end up resembling a movie set, or worse, a furniture showroom. (Yes, we love Design Within Reach, but we wouldn’t want to live there.) So how do you introduce the best of midcentury in a way that’s modern, practical and beautiful? In his new book, Making Midcentury Modern (Gibbs Smith, $35), Palm Springs designer Christopher Kennedy offers 100 foolproof tips for introducing the look into a contemporary home.
Home helper
The voice-activated personal home assistant has been hugely popular, with Amazon selling more than 3 million of its Echo in only two years. Google’s version, called Google Home, was released in November and has many of the same voice-controlled features—it plays music, gives you weather and traffic updates, relays an overview of your upcoming schedule, and even answers questions and commands. But are you ready for a machine that can hear and see you? Word on the street is that Apple wants to set itself apart with its own smart-home device, improving the existing microphone and speaker technology of its competitors while adding facial recognition sensors. Like its iPhones, Apple’s home assistant would be based on the Siri voice assistant. That means this assistant will know who is speaking to it and the person’s emotional state. Talk about taking artificial intelligence to the next level.

ceous accent in a mostly rectilinear room. While Knight designed the preponderance of the home’s architectural features, she ceded some decisions to the homeowners. It was that willingness to work with her client that sparked McIntyre’s confidence—and her encore career as an interior designer. For example, McIntyre helped flesh out designs for the striking three-tiered outdoor patio whose dual focal points are a graceful old magnolia tree that appears to be growing through the striated concrete floor and a sleekly modern outdoor gas fireplace whose simple black concrete surround allows the horizontal line of flame to be the star attraction. And thanks to Knight’s windowed great room, the fireplace can be enjoyed indoors and out. “It just draws everybody,” says McIntyre—an observation that could apply equally to the house as a whole.

in the dining room, resituated to the front of the house. Overall, she added 2,100 square feet to the original 2,000-square-foot house. About 1,500 square feet of the new living space is on the second floor, which is home to three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room and an office/storage room. With its simple but dramatic lines, the house was the perfect envelope for McIntyre’s choice of furnishings. A curvilinear sofa in the great room makes the substantial space feel surprisingly cozy, and jolts of orange and red—in the abstract lighting fixture over the fireplace and a Pop Art-inspired clock in an upstairs bathroom, for instance—warm the house and set off elegantly severe pieces like the dining room’s square glass-topped table and stainless steel chairs. McIntyre’s favorite feature in the house is a large kidney-shaped soaking tub in the master bathroom, another curva-

hen Diane Durocher was hired to redesign the Long Branch condo purchased by newlyweds, the directive was simple: Make it fun, festive and fast. It was already autumn, and the couple hoped it would be ready for vacationing and entertaining the following Memorial Day, only six months away. Casual comfort was a key element. “This home needed to reflect their desire to kick off their shoes and just relax,” says Durocher, of Ramsey-based Diane Durocher Interiors. Durocher and her team set to work creating a sophisticated beach aesthetic that had a relaxed, welcoming vibe—perfect for the family as well as many guests. To achieve it, walls were painted a sand color and the floors stained a warm walnut shade. White trim and cabinetry balance the space. The color story continues throughout the condo, into the master bedroom, which features a navy blue accent wall for contrast and drama. “It’s the perfect backdrop for the white upholstered bed,” Durocher says. She accessorized with chrome, glass and shell elements to carry the beach theme through. Nearby, a writing desk allows the homeowners the chance to work practically beachside. But a clean, fresh aesthetic wasn’t the couple’s only mandate. “Because it’s a vacation home, they didn’t want to worry about anything breaking or being ruined,” Durocher adds. Porcelain tile in the hallways, foyer, kitchen and guest bedroom make cleanup a cinch when sandy feet trample through after a day at the beach. In the living room, a sectional with mocha chenille upholstery is both super-durable and houses a queen-size sleeper. The faux leather ottoman doubles as a cocktail table, and the simple accessories, many sourced from Home Goods, ensure laid-back comfort and style. After months of diligent work, the full condo and the couple were ready to kick off the summer season. Fun, festive and fast? Check!

Home Interiors in Asbury Park, summoned his inner Zen to answer the call of a Florida couple who make this seaside city home during summer months. The first order of business was to unify the chopped up smaller spaces to create a flowing—yet separate—floor plan that consists of an area to sleep, bathe, dress, and sit and dream. Martinez chose a calming palette of blue, cream and green, echoing the nearby beach. “My clients wanted to feel as if ensconced in a cozy country inn—but a super luxurious one,” he says, “a place where they can unwind with a glass of cognac and read a good book—even if the house were filled with overnight guests.” (And filled it is: With six bedrooms, there’s a constant stream of visitors.) The designer interspersed special touches to achieve what the clients wanted: a gas fireplace in the sitting room, radiant heating beneath the marble floor in the master bath, a massive walk-in closet. Fabrics, lighting and accessories were all kept subdued to add to the soothing mood of the suite. Can you say “serenity now”?

picture this... An image of a rusting car inspires a designer’s use of varied materials and textures. Written by Trudy Walz Design by Peter Salerno Inc. Photography by Peter Rymwid
There were no cell phone photos or pages ripped from trade magazines. Instead, a simple picture of an abandoned blue car rusting away in a cornfield was the only thing Peter Salerno’s client, an architect with a home in Tewksbury, brought to the table when he asked the designer to renovate his kitchen. “The first thing he said to me was, ‘I want something nobody else has,’” Salerno says. Then the client handed him the picture and told him, “I want this to be your inspiration.” Salerno, who in his 20 years in the business has achieved 34 national awards and has showrooms in Wyckoff and Mendham, began the renovation by painting pieces of steel and leaving them outdoors to weather. He created various mock-ups and samples until he finally hit upon the look the client was seeking. Once the 18-foot-by-14-foot space was gutted, he began playing to that aesthetic with his artistic flare, and by mixing materials and textures, he created a design that’s as functional as it is unique. Dominating the outside wall of the space is a masterpiece in its own right: a custom-made forced patina steel hood. It caps an eight-burner Miele gas range set into a natural quartzite Leathered Taj Mahal countertop (yes—it feels like leather!), the shell of which is the handiwork of SimplyAmy Luxury Artisans of Milford. Blow-torched to produce a swirling blend of browns and oranges with a barely discernable hint of blue, the hood matches the cold-rolled steel panels on the 10-foot-by-4-foot island, which anchors the space. A 30-inch stainless steel farm sink with apron by Texas Lightsmith sits below one of the windows flanking the hood. The

backsplash, a glass mosaic by Frangi Pani, yielded yet another opportunity to switch up materials and add texture. Now about that island. It is, Salerno says, “the jewel of the kitchen.” It is topped with a double-build (two slabs, proportionate to the 9-foot ceiling) of Blue Louise polished granite that adds a pop of blue to the color scheme, and equipped with a Miele dishwasher. Also onboard: a combination steam oven, as well as a second stainless steel, 30-inch farm sink with apron. Both sinks, by the way, feature brushed stainless steel Waterstone faucets—one with insta-hot and filtered-cold capabilities. But, truth be told, the real workhorse in the room is the wall of floor-to-ceiling maple cabinetry opposite the island. Panels of stippled metal disguise the embedded 42-inch Sub-Zero refrigera-

tor with French doors. A double-door cabinet away are a Miele double oven and warming drawer. To the right, a La Cornue Flamberge rotisserie is centered in a set-back section of cabinets. Among the finishing touches provided by interior designer Diane Boyer of Cedar Grove is the free-form chandelier above the island, a Hubbardton Forge custom light fixture. She also added the abstract art work. One of the aspects of the project Salerno enjoyed was using a variety of materials and textures together in such a harmonious way. Even the flooring, Porcelain Visone from Strata Tile of Wyckoff, is made to “look like denim jeans,” he says. “I found it super challenging, and when it was completed, I found it so rewarding.” And his client? “He was ecstatic!”

A
rchitect Jeff DeGraw was given an entirely blank slate when a husband-and-wife team tasked his Middletown, N.Y.-based firm, DeGraw and DeHaan Architects, with the creation of a backyard pool house in northwest Bergen County. The start-from-scratch project resulted in a classic 200-square-foot structure, a little brother of sorts to the main home, a 1960s garrison colonial that DeGraw’s company was renovating at the time. “We went for simplicity,” DeGraw says of the pool house.“It was meant to look like an outbuilding of a New England estate and really a ‘Mini-Me’ of the neighboring structure. Our pool houses always work in cohesion with the primary home.” Just steps from the in-ground pool and surrounded by a neatly laid brick paver patio, the pool house and its welcoming French doors invite visitors inside for walk-up bar service. Cabinetry designed by DeGraw (the blue hue is the choice of the homeowners) stores glassware and drinks as well as other pool equipment and supplies. A changing room and washer and dryer are also inside. Dual pergolas highlight the exterior design and create balance and length along the pool. This feature also helps enclose the yard, DeGraw says, and lends to the “intimate and private environment.” “Pool houses are like destinations,” he says. “With so many aspects from the main home, these buildings are just like extensions of the living room.” For these homeowners, DeGraw says, the pool house is a “little world and oasis” right in the backyard.

Hues like red and orange add vibrancy and energy to a space. Often too overpowering to use on every wall, intense colors are perfect for an accent wall and can highlight interesting architectural details like this built-in console.

Tile is an easy way to brighten up a bathroom. Here, watery shades of blue and green contrast nicely with the stark floors and subway tile used behind the bathtub and shower. Opposite: The bright blue accent wall of this kitchen picks up the same vibrant shade found in the couch and ties the space together.

This Rumson home was built quite recently, but you’d never know it from the traditional look and feel of its stately library-cum family room.

“The homeowners wanted something very traditional,” says designer Una O’Neill, who used antiques throughout the home. Many of the ceilings, like this one in the family room, were painted using faux finishes.
Kicking back with a good book in this elegant family room might feel as though you are reclining in an English manor home, but in fact, you’re on the Navesink River in Rumson. Wood-paneled walls and mahogany built-ins lend a formal feel, yet “the homeowners wanted a very inviting room that they could relax in,” says designer Una O’Neill, who owns her own firm in Glen Rock. A pair of green corduroy couches, two leather recliners and a coffee table were found at ABC Carpet & Home, but the console table behind the couch is antique, as is the bronze doré chandelier. The homeowners’ vast collection of art made decorating easier for O’Neill. “We had to buy next to nothing because they had so much we could use,” she says. The room may look traditional, but it features modern electronics like the TV over the fireplace (which looks like an aquarium when not in use) and a sound system cleverly hidden in the built-in bookcases.

The main floor of the new addition features a modern kitchen open to a dining area and sitting area. “We spend a lot of time together, and now with the open plan, we can all be together more easily, says the homeowner. A custom-built bookshelf draws the eye to the original dining room, which is now a place to read or watch TV.

When it came time to decorate the home, the couple was equally hands on. “Dita and Alex have very specific taste and a great sense of style,” says Conway. “We worked with them on all the finishes and detailing to make sure it all tied together, but we didn’t really do full interior design.” The couple estimates it took about a year to finish decorating the interior after the construction was done. They picked out all the light fixtures like the spiral light from Currey & Company that hangs above the dining table and the sconces from Artemide that illuminate their bed. “We didn’t want wires and too much furniture everywhere, so we decided on sconces in the bedroom,” says Dita. “We like to keep things simple.” For walls, Alex wanted a little more color and Dita desired a neutral look, so they compromised with some very light shades like celadon green in the TV room and a lavender gray in the bedroom that function as cool neutrals. The kitchen is cream with warm gray cabinetry and a citrus green glass backsplash. White quartz countertops and an island with a waterfall edge are low

really important that we live in the space, not anyone else. Alex helped me say no a lot.” The addition also includes a basement with a rec room, a bathroom and a laundry room separated by rustic wood barn doors. Dita originally wanted the laundry room on the main floor, but when the design couldn’t accommodate it, Conway promised her it wouldn’t be a dark and unwelcoming place. He situated a staircase in the middle of the home to function as a light well illuminating the first and second floors as well as the basement. Many of the modern industrial details in the home, such as the exposed brick in the stairwell and the rustic wood ceiling, were a direct result of Dita seeing them on the home design website Houzz and filing them away for her future renovation project. “I wanted to use very natural materials like wood, iron and stone, and I wanted that contrast between the light and dark, hence the lighter wood ceiling and the dark iron railings and charcoal window casings,” she explains.

maintenance, in keeping with the family’s quest for minimalism and ease of use. Another example: a powder room featuring a floating toilet and sink. “We wanted nothing on the bathroom floor so that it was easier to clean,” says Alex. “We were adventurous and did things a little bit differently.” The same could be said for the environmentally friendly “green” aspects of the home: a high-efficiency heating and cooling system controlled by Nest products, LED lights throughout, an electrical system serviced by the solar panels on the roof—even an electric BMW plugged in outside. “We knew we wanted to make it very green,” says Alex. “It’s more expensive in the beginning but a good idea in the long run.” The project may have taken a bit longer than some—they finished in late summer last year—but the end result is exactly what they wanted. “I love it,” says Alex. “Building your own home is kind of like having a new baby. We are really happy with the way it turned out.”

We visit far-flung places—and even some closer to home—for many reasons: to learn, rest, escape, indulge. Of course, the hotels we stay in give us access to some great destinations. And often they’re much more than places to rest our heads. They provide oodles of design ideas, not the least of which are fun wallcovers. Here, some examples from our travels...

design challenge
live a little
There’s no reason you can’t turn a small space into a multi-purpose room suited for eating, relaxing—and checking the latest score.
The design analysis: We enlisted the expertise of designer Eric J. Schmidt of North Caldwell-based Eric J. Schmidt Interiors (eric schmidtinteriors.com), whose vision was to optimize the space for “flow, function and fabulous style.” To create a “transitional” character for the space, Schmidt’s palette consisted of blues and ivory/white, which were melded in a subtle play between geometry and texture.
Schmidt introduced a corner banquette upholstered in rich navy blue faux leather—a perfect spot to enjoy breakfast or sip a cup of tea. In the opposite corner is a cozy sectional sofa in an indigo ikat print. Schmidt envisions it as a welcoming spot to curl up with a book or catch the Sunday game. (There’s a flat-screen TV on the opposite wall.) In the theme of functionality, he opted for a round side table, which can be easily moved around and used as a cocktail table when the need arises. With the breakfast nook and den area in their respective corners, comprising minimal, modern designs, the space feels bigger but maintains a cohesive style, he says. “The blending of texture, geometry and color make for an updated multi-use room,” Schmidt explains. You’ll find some of his fabric selections and more on the opposite page.

The space: It was cramped 14-foot-by-10-foot room limited in uses because of its diminutive size. But the hopeful homeowners had a desire to use the space for multiple purposes: a breakfast room and a den. The challenge? Turning the small room into not one but two functioning living spaces while maintaining a cohesive flow throughout.

A large modern lantern in polished nickel by Ralph Lauren anchors and illuminates the room.
The corner banquette is upholstered in Otto, a nofuss faux leather by Kravet Design.
A simple window valance allows more natural light into the space than regular curtains. Schmidt created one using Champleve Admiral, a bold geometric pattern by Kravet Design.
A cabana weave wall covering in Poolside Splash by Phillip Jefferies was added for texture and a more updated look, says designer Eric Schmidt. It’s the perfect complement to the bright white wainscot, he says.
The sectional sofa upholstered in the indigo Rimba Ikat print by Ralph Lauren adds dimension to the room.
For extra seating in the breakfast nook, Schmidt added a “Paris Bistro” side chair by Frontgate Contract.
The adjustable table by Eileen Gray was designed for small, multi-use spaces and provides endless options for this space.
