Fan Fare Every spring brings the long-awaited start of the MLB season, but opening day also brings a less welcome phenomenon: bleachers filled with fans sporting their “lucky,” grungy, oversized jerseys and t-shirts. Red Jacket clothing designs for that all-too-rare breed: the fashion-conscious sports enthusiast. Vintage logos on their screen-printed t-shirts recall the best parts of eras past. The all-cotton garments are heavily pre-washed, giving them a softness and durability—meaning they’ll last through years of post-season play, even if your team doesn’t.

It’s a family affair at Etro, where Veronica Etro whips up the women’s line and her brother, Kean, is in charge of the men’s. Both designers draw heavily on the company’s expertise in fabrics (Etro got its start in the Sixties as a textile house) when putting together their luxe separates and colorful sportswear. For spring/summer, Kean offers up witty-yet-wearable jackets and pants done in dapper plaids and blue-and-gray stripes, with a hot-colored tropical prints option for those who want it. The women’s collection is right on-trend with a blush-hued palette, but it still features Etro signatures like lounge-y silk separates and bohemian dresses. Of course, it wouldn’t be Etro without at least a few exotic prints, and this season’s no different. There’s a silk that looks like the wings of a monarch butterfly, a swirling, turquoise-accent paisley and an oversized floral with salmon-pink blossoms. Even within this kaleidoscope of color, the finished look—for men as well as women—is still classic and effortlessly cool.

ART at Garmany Garmany has a long-held tradition of stocking our store with wearable pieces of art, but three years ago, we introduced more conventional art to our offerings. This spring, windows and store displays will feature the oil paintings of local artist Joyce Anastasia Urbanski. Through May 31, her “Portraits” series will provide an extra layer of aesthetic pleasure to the Garmany shopping experience. The series features large-scale works that capture women in moments of quiet contemplation. She depicts her subjects and the bits of nature around them with loose brush strokes and bright, vibrant colors that mimic the palettes and textures of some of the best spring and summer looks. THE DOOBIE BROTHERS

April 29: The Doobie Brothers became one of the most popular bands of the Seventies with their unique brand of soul-inflected rock. They take it to the Count Basie stage to perform hits like “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “Black Water,” and “What a Fool Believes.” Tickets: $39.50 to $85.

WHAT LIES BENEATH KENNY LOGGINS

Vivek Nagrani has no doubt given more thought to men’s underwear than most of its wearers ever have. He made his name as the creator of V.K. Negrani men’s hosiery, woven of the finest cotton by small factories, in bold, striking designs—and, by all accounts, addictive to men who’ve tried them. Now check out his thinking-outside-the-brief new styles of men’s underwear: There’s the Woody, a “hyper-constructed” boxer brief that works well with trim-fitted trousers. It’s made of Peruvian Pima with lycra, as is the Johnson, an easy-fit “trunq” that offers medium support. Last and, in a way, least, is the Willy, a tailored trim-fit model of 100% Peruvian Pima for the man who “enjoys total freedom,” according to Nagrani. Next time you’re in the store, stop by the accessories department to consider an underwear upgrade.

ALL-ACCESS PASS:

the trunk show Trunk shows are a vestige of the early days of apparel retailing, when manufacturers’ representatives would visit stores with trunks full of the latest fashions, and store owners would choose the items that best suited their customers. Nowadays, we go straight to designers’ showrooms in Milan, Naples, New York and elsewhere to select merchandise for each season. But the trunk show lives on—giving you the opportunity to see and purchase items from a designer’s entire line. Here are some of the trunk shows coming up at Garmany. 22

DIANA ROSS

May 12: Multiple Grammy-winner Kenny Loggins has provided the soundtrack to some of our favorite movies of the past decades. The singer-songwriter will perform his timeless hits, as well as fresh material from his new family-friendly album. Tickets: $35 to $125. May 18: Diana Ross, the first female artist to have more than five #1 hits, will sing songs from both her prolific solo career and time as lead singer of the Supremes, including “You Keep Me Hanging On,” “I’m Coming Out,” and “I Got a Crush on You.” Tickets: $49.50 to $149.50.

Jeans Genie Skinny or low, distressed or dark blue, laid-back or dressed up—how many kinds of jeans do you need, and, more important, which pair is appropriate for what occasion? Garmany’s Jeans Saloon is here to help you figure all that out. The space is filled not only with the best jeans available—with brands like Diesel and 7 for All Mankind (center), pictured—but with funky belts (see the selection on page 48) of this issue), t-shirts with attitude (see page 52) and cool casual jackets. Stop by the Saloon for an education in the ever-evolving world of men’s jeans—and walk out looking better than ever.

SANTANDREA’S uncommon threads

The Santandrea brand is the result of a happy union between the venerated Trabaldo Togna textile mill and Sartoria Saintandrews, a firm noted for the skill of its 165 tailors. Trabaldo Togna textile chief Luca Tabaldo Togna bought the smaller firm three years ago and rechristened it Santandrea. Now customers of select establishments can experience top-of-the line menswear produced under Trabaldo Togna’s supervision and made with its exclusive fine and super-fine fabrics (even the most avid fashion aficionados say they’ve never felt anything like them). These are clothes created by—and for— people for whom fine clothing is a passion. “It is a great thing to take the time to look after your style and your wardrobe, which are important to our well-being,” says Luca Trabaldo Togna. At Garmany, customers can have either ready-to-wear or made-to-measure items. The delights of made-to-measure are, of course, manifold: choosing among fabrics and design details, having a piece created to fit you with maximum comfort and style. With Santandrea, there’s an unexpected pleasure as well: Unlike with most brands, there is no additional charge for a made-tomeasure or custom order.

Exploring The Feminine FACTOR

Craving Crab Perfection? There’s an appetizer for that It’s been called “the world’s best crab cake”: the pretzel-crusted version offered by chef/artist/entrepreneur David Burke at Fromagerie in Rumson. Served with poppyseed honey and pineapple coleslaw, the dish beautifully combines spicy, salty, sour and sweet flavors, with a bit of crunch to boot. And of course, it looks beautiful—after all, Mr. Burke is a man who knows quite a bit about presentation. Here, exclusively for GARMANY readers, he shares the brilliantly simple recipe for the ultimate crab cake.

DAVID BURKE’S PRETZEL-CRUSTED CRAB CAKE Ingredients: ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

1 tbsp. peanut oil ¾ cup finely diced onion ½ cup finely diced celery 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 cup mayonnaise 2 lbs. lump crabmeat, picked clean of all shell and cartilage ■ 3 tbsp. minced fresh chives

■ ■ ■ ■

1 tbsp. freshly grated lemon zest 2 tsp. Old Bay seasoning Pinch of cayenne pepper 1 box Pretz pretzel sticks (can be purchased in Japanese gourmet stores) ■ 2 egg whites ■ ½ cup rice pearls ■ Approx. 1 cup clarified butter

Heat the oil in a small sauté pan over medium heat. Add the onion and celery and sauté the vegetables for about four minutes, or until they are soft and translucent. Remove them from the heat and drain off and discard the excess oil. Set aside. Combine the butter and mayonnaise in a large mixing bowl. Using a hand-held electric mixer or a wooden spoon, beat until the mixture is well blended and very smooth. Fold in the crabmeat, chives, lemon zest, Old Bay and cayenne along with the reserved onions and celery. Cover and refrigerate the crab cake mixture for 15 minutes to chill slightly. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Remove the crab cake mixture from the refrigerator. Line one row of Pretz (about six pretzels) closely together and top with about ¼ cup of crab mixture. Line the top with the same amount of pretzels (creating a raft). Dip the open sides of the crab cake in egg white and then the rice pearls to coat the sides. Place the pretzel-coated cakes on the prepared baking sheet. Lightly cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 30 minutes, or until the cakes are firm. Heat the clarified butter in a large sauté pan over medium heat until it begins to smoke. In batches, using additional butter as needed, fry the crab cakes for about 3 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown. Place them on paper towels to drain. Place the crab cakes on a serving platter.

Fans of the Philosphy di Alberta Ferretti line include hot young Hollywood types like Ali Larter, Emmy Rossum and January Jones. They, like so many women, show off to best advantage in the type of gauzy, float-y, intricately detailed cocktail dress for which Philosophy is best known. The romantic and fun spring collection is highlighted by whimsical prints of eyes, butterflies and lips. It’s been called the type of clothing a woman wears when she wants to feel like a goddess. Ferretti herself refuses to typecast the line, saying enigmatically that the name Philosophy indicates only “something that cannot be imposed.” Decide for yourself when you visit the Philosophy selection in Garmany’s women’s department.

The Crème de la Closet As houses and wardrobes grow, so do the options for organizing closets. The latest innovation in clothing storage is the Virtuoso line from California Closets, available for now only in select markets—Monmouth County, fortunately, among them. What’s different? Well, Virtuoso is a horizontal closet design concept, with a minimum of vertical lines to break your view as you gaze at the contents of your walk-in. It’s made from your choice of a line of materials from Italy called Lago, which comes in a range of colors and is certified as “green” in Europe. And why not have a beautiful and low-chemical closet? “After all, you spend time in there every day,” Eric Nili, manager of California Closets in Cranbury, points out. “People spend serious time and money on their wardrobes. They don’t want them housed in some bare-bones closet the builder put up.” A wellorganized closet has other benefits as well. “Some people find items of clothing they haven’t seen in years and are so happy to have them back,” Nili reports. “Others say, ‘Thanks for giving me more room. Now I can go shopping!’” For more information on closet options, call California Closets at 1-800-229-2567.

INIMITABLE INCOTEX

Italian fashion house Blumarine is for women who want to put a sparkle in their step—literally, as sequins make their way into nearly every collection. For spring/summer, the embellishments appear on the necklines of breezy tie-dye dresses that would look right at home at a yacht party in the Mediterranean (no surprise, as the line was founded by designer Anna Molinari on the island of Capri). Molinari knows her customers will always be the life of the party, so she prepares them this season with flirty dresses in sherbet shades of lemon, tangerine and icy pink. She also offers separates with safari touches, like a camouflage cropped cardi and khaki cargos with a golden sheen. Over at Blugirl, the juniors line, there are plenty more party pieces, including a pink cocktail dress in the brand’s signature leopard print and a miniskirt covered in blooming red poppies. Suffice it to say, the woman lucky enough to slip into these confections is no wallflower.

GLOBE-TROTTING

GOURMET

Summer is the season for fiery Southwestern fare and premium tequila, both specialties of The Copper Canyon restaurant at 51 First Avenue in Atlantic Highlands. “Our tequila tasting events really get rolling this time of year,” says chef and owner Michael Krikorian. Each month, agave fiends converge on the restaurant to work their way through six to 10 pairings, such as a sparkling silver tequila with a salty, crunchy taquito, or a smooth Añejo with notes of cognac accompanied by something sweet. Krikorian, who loves to inject tastes of other cultures into his traditional Tex-Mex plates (think brie topped with a tomato salsa and served with tortillas) is also branching out with a new sister restaurant this summer. “It has the same small-plates concept, but we’re featuring globally eclectic cuisine,” he says of the spot, located a stone’s throw from the Copper Canyon.“Many of the dishes take their inspiration from foods sold by street vendors in other countries around the world.” Whether you’re in the mood for a tequila fiesta or the taste of a new culture, Chef Krikorian has got you covered.

Incotex, maker of luxurious men’s trousers, is an Italy-based line that’s focused squarely on the American market. “To start, the customer in the U.S. has a different body than the one in Europe or Asia—generally bigger and taller. We had to completely change the trouser pattern to make it comfortable for our U.S. customer,” says Emilio Paschetto, director of sales for North America for Incotex parent company Slowear. “Even the fabrics we use are different—softer and lighter.” Those fabrics include pin corduroys, exclusive lightweight wools and ice gabardine. For all their focus on materials and fit, Incotex pants don’t neglect style. “We try to be brave and not be boring with cotton, so we offer fancy colors like pink, light green, French blue, violet and burgundy,” Paschetto says. “Often it’s the brightest colors that sell the best, because this is what our customers want—they already have lots of our trousers in stone and khaki.” And who’s buying these light, bright and super-comfortable pants? “Our starting client is maybe around 28, moving up in the world,” says Paschetto. “Or our customer could be 65, with a healthy life, very active. All our customers tend to be cultured and well-traveled.” Whatever the age, Paschetto maintains, “once he’s buying us, he doesn’t go back to other lines.” Try the spring line for yourself and look for the new Incotex shop at Garmany.

garmany guide} The Art of the Bow Tie Once the domain of the geek and the oldster, the bow tie is back—on the runway, in the office and on the street. Garmany carries an extensive selection from top makers. Remember: The key to bow-tie cool is to tie it yourself. You can do it! Here’s how: 1. Slide the tie under your collar. Allow one end of the tie to hang about two inches lower than the other end.

7. Gently pull the bow at both folded ends to tighten the knot. Hint: This is exactly the same knot most people use to tie a shoelace.

2. Bring the longer end across the shorter end.

8. Adjust to taste. Smooth bow or dimpled? Loose or tight? You don’t want to be too precise; “perfectly imperfect” is the look you’re going for.

3, Pass the longer end under the shorter end and upward, forming the first part of the knot. Pull tight to the shirt collar.

4. Form the front loop of the bow by doubling up the shorter, hanging end and placing it across the collar points.

5. Hold the front loop between your index finger and thumb. Drop the long end down over the front loop.

30

6. Pass the hanging end under the front loop. Use your index finger to bend the end in the middle (at the widest part), and poke your finger through the open part of the knot. Now you have formed the back loop of the bow.

A View to a Thrill Like the characters in the classic E.M. Forster novel, experienced travelers know that a hotel room’s view can set the tone for an entire trip. A Room with a View is a luxurious picture book—a compendium of Condé Nast Traveler’s signature final pages—that showcases the best vistas from the best hotel rooms around the world. Relaxing in your favorite chair at home, you can, with this tome, gaze at the Taj Mahal in the distant mist, the brilliantly colored onion domes of St. Basil’s in Moscow or a sailboat scudding in the blue and green waters off Miami—and much more. Speaking of warmth, what’s up with all the sweaters I see paired with warm-weather sportcoats and suits in the new collections? Wouldn’t a sweater make a guy too warm?

Well, you wouldn’t wear a sweater on a hot summer day. But on a spring day or a cool summer night, a lightweight sweater won’t make you boil over. Visually, it has the effect of making a suit or sportcoat

de Let Your Feet Go Nu Neutral-toned shoes are a must this season, from cage shoes to perforated-effect sandals. They go with everything you own, plus they help make your legs look wonderfully long. Platform pumps, like those from Tory Burch, are especially hot, as are patent leather peep-toe pumps from Stuart Weitzman. Choose a nude shade that’s a close match to your skin tone, and wear your new shoes barelegged for best effect. Creamy ecrus pair nicely with the buff-colored pieces available from so many designers this

an elegant way, and they provide flattering and feminine draping. Airy gauzes and flowing chiffons add no bulk to a look, even when a piece has ruffles, like Escada’s multicolor sheer short-sleeve print shirt with a ruffle neck. Sheer is everywhere this season, in jacket sleeves, pretty printed scarves, cutout panels in evening dresses and more. Check out Etro’s gorgeous sheer paisley blouse and scarves or Blumarine’s sheer floral-print tunic. You may choose to wear a lacy bra or tube top underneath. You also have the option of a camisole in a color that’s close to your skin tone or to the color of the top.

season (black, white and buff elements work beautifully together). Of course, they also look fab with the florals and sheers so popular this season.

Tr y All White No color enhances a tanned complexion better than white. This classic neutral color is a spring/ summer staple, of course, but this season, designers sent models down the runway dressed purely in white. A Badgley Mischka pants suit, a ruffled white frock from Collette Dinnigan or a Roberto Cavalli evening gown give you this season’s achromatic look. Try creating a stylish outfit by layering white separates– a

JY james yarosh associates fine art gallery

Established in 1996, the James Yarosh Associates Fine Art Gallery was founded upon and remains loyal to its vision: to represent fine art for art’s sake and to curate gallery collections and thoughtfully present art with an artist’s eye and understanding. Gallery owner James Yarosh draws upon his knowledge developed as an artist and published interior design devotee, in addition to his industry experience and variety of solid relationships with international artists developed since 1985, to offer complete fine art services for residential and corporate projects. He provides at-location consultations to give clients guidance with framing, placing, and displaying original fine art. James Yarosh Associates Fine Art Gallery has received critical acclaim on a national level for presenting Russian fine art collections and recognizing significant art movements early on, as well as for representing original works created by New York City and New Jersey regional artists. James provides collectors, interior designers, and trade clients with fine art selections appropriate to a multitude of tastes and interests. In addition, James exhibits the solo public art installations at Garmany in Red Bank, New Jersey and a custom and decorative line of art available through the Frame of Mind Gallery in Holmdel, New Jersey. He also presides as a judge for the annual Bayonet Farm Art and Music Festival’s plein air competitions in Holmdel, New Jersey; in 2009, he shared the role with his invited guest, Peter Trippi, editor of Fine Art Connoisseur magazine. Yarosh participates in various charity designer show houses, including Kips Bay, New York and Cape May, Twin Maples,

and Stately Homes by the Sea, New Jersey, leading to publication in New York Spaces magazine and multiple design features in Design NJ magazine, amongst others. James has proudly achieved In Circle status for the gallery, with bronze level contributions for supporting the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Center. To satisfy his passion for art and to extend his art education and experience, James travels extensively throughout Europe on a regular basis, studying art in well-known museums. James has also recently appeared on HGTV and was featured in the winter, 2008 national edition of the Art and Antiques Collector’s Sourcebook in an eight page article titled “Imperial Eye, written about Yarosh’s fine art collection and his involvement with notable Soviet-era and Russian art personally collected as well as offered to his clients through his New Jersey gallery. All of the above services and presentations illustrate the essential benefits of recognizing and incorporating fine art in the home as part of the everyday living experience. James Yarosh Associates Fine Art Gallery, located at 55 East Main Street in Holmdel, is open Saturday, 12 to 4 p.m. and by appointment weekdays and evenings. For further information, please contact James at732.993.5ART or 732.993.5278 or visit the gallery’s website at www. jamesyarosh.com, where guests are welcome to register for e-card gallery show announcements, inquire about appointments to visit the gallery, and schedule in-home consultations.

it different by having it in a stripe or a check. But no one was taking it to the next level.

ROBERT STOCK

So what takes a Robert Graham shirt to the next level?

We design all of our own fabrics—every pattern, every colorway, every trim. Basically, all the ingredients are exclusive to us from the start. Then we add in little extras our customers love to discover, like embroidery inside the neckband or trim under the cuff. We’ve taken the shirt and made it into an art form. What types of customers are drawn to your designs?

They’re individuals. They like feeling comfortable in what they wear, and our clothes fit well. Also, our customers know we never do the same thing twice, so when they come back next season there will be something new. You also have a women’s line and recently expanded into dress shirts, ties and accessories. Was that in response to customer requests?

Yes. We consider Robert Graham to be more of a lifestyle than a brand. It made sense to expand but we wouldn’t have done it if

A Robert Graham design isn’t just for someone who wants to look good from afar. Each colorful piece has unique embellishments and witty extras—some only the wearer can see—that make it even more distinctive upon closer inspection. That’s one of the reasons the brand resonates so well with Garmany customers. To find out more about the iconic company, we checked in with Robert Graham’s chairman and founder, Robert Stock.

The Maserati GranTurismo delivers it all: Pininfarina looks, performance, comfort and the throatiest engine on the road

BY MARIA LISSANDRELLO

JUST A GLANCE AT THE MASERATI GRANTURISMO in all its curvy glory tells you

this two-door 2+2 coupé is a modern-day classic. No surprise, given its lineage: From nose to tail, the car is a stylish paean to its aerodynamic ancestor, the

original 1947 GranTurismo. Known as the AG 1500 GT, that Pininfarina gem was the first Maserati built for the road, not the raceway, and today’s version follows suit with bold fenders arching closely around 20-inch wheels, a long nose with strong V-shaped lines and dramatic wide-set headlights. As for its most distinctive feature—the trident studding the large concave grille—it arguably stands as the automotive world’s most elegant emblem. But looks aren’t the only thing that makes the GranTurismo so damn, well, sexy: In a 2008 study by British luxury car insurer Hiscox, a whopping 100 percent of female participants had a marked biological response to the mere sound of Maserati’s V8 engine. Turns out the same sexy snarl that gets

With its sophisticated design and superior balance, the GranTurismo owns the curves—both visually and literally. State-of-the-art suspension means smooth driving even at high speeds, but the GT also functions as an elegant touring machine.

HOLIDAY SAIL ALONG THE DALMATIAN COAST OF CROATIA, and you’ll see more than a thousand islands. Scat-

tered like gemstones, with the mainland mountains as a backdrop, they’re part of one of the most scenic coastlines in Europe. Some are no more than rocky outcroppings, while others are topped with pine forests or vineyards, islands that are home to fishing villages and lively port towns. You could spend many summers sailing the beautiful waters of the Adriatic, seeking paradise. But you could save yourself time simply by asking a well-traveled native to name the most beautiful of all of the islands. Chances are, the reply would be “Korcula.” Twenty miles long and no wider than five miles, Korcula lies about 100 miles from Dubrovnik and just a mile off the Croatian coast. It was once covered with pine trees and thus called Kerkyra Malaina (Black Corfu) by Greeks, who settled here around 400 B.C. When you board a ferry in Orebic or Split to make the journey, you’re crossing to an island that is the essence of fairy-tale Europe, a place you imagined existed in the past but had long since disappeared. T-Bird Rising The 2010 Triumph Thunderbird is an instant classic in the cruiser category

MARLON BRANDO TERRORIZED A SMALL TOWN —and made his bike the ultimate

symbol of rebellion—when he showed up on his 1950 Triumph Thunderbird in

the film The Wild One. Since that time, the Triumph motorcycle brand has had its ups and downs in the marketplace. But it’s safe to say that, with the reintroduction of the Thunderbird this year, the cruiser has regained its iconic status. Triumph put muscle in this model: Its water-cooled, 1600cc engine puts out 85 horsepower and 108 foot-pounds of torque. Unique among cruisers, the engine is a parallel-twin rather than the expected V-twin. And instead of a chain drive, Triumph uses a belt drive—its first since 1922—to transfer all that torque from the engine to the wheels. The rap on cruisers is that they don’t handle well, but the T-Bird, voted Cruiser of the Year by Cycle World magazine, has earned widespread praise for its acceleration, maneuverability and braking. And then there’s the matter of looks. British Triumph tapped American designer Tim Prentice to craft the appearance of the new T-Bird. The result of the threeyear project is a clean-lined bike—with long exhaust pipes and plenty of chrome, of course—that highlights the uncluttered engine. The teardrop fuel tank, a defining design detail of any cruiser, is especially fat, curvaceous and just plain beautiful.

VEST

DRESSED

One of the more interesting menswear trends this spring is the vest. As Johnell Garmany notes on page 32, the new vests are worn not necessarily for warmth, but for “cool.” There are many variations—leather biker, studded rocker, and so on. We like this sleek, thin nylon interpretation by Brunello Cucinelli. The cotton v-neck sweater, blue-and-red shirt and pants are also by Cucinelli, for an outfit that represents the ultimate in casual, comfortable luxury. (The shoes are by Cole Haan.) From his domain in the Umbrian hills, the designer directs a complex of workshops where the finest cashmere and cotton clothes are created, from spinning and dyeing through the final stitching-together. It’s Cucinelli’s genius to walk the line between high tailoring and easy elegance, creating versatile clothes that look as terrific as they feel.

The unique topography of the Côte Rôtie produces extraordinary wines. Granite and schist soils in the hilly region help retain heat from sunlight, which protects the vines from the area’s chilly springs. Stone walls and terraces help minimize erosion.

Displaying tremendous complexity on the nose and palate, this whiskey requires some quiet time (in my case, by the fireside during a snowstorm) for one to plumb the developing aromas and tastes. There is ripe fruit on the nose, some sherry and vanilla, and a resinous, linseed-like tang. I also found a pleasing note of rye spice, although no rye is used in the mash.
