SPOTLIGHT 10

HAMILTON

Actor Orlando Bloom’s collection of rare vintage luxury watches has included this Rolex Explorer II “Orange Hand” with a fat strap.

ACC.HAM.OrlandoBloom.indd 10

10/24/18 2:26 PM

FACE TIME Orlando Bloom’s watch collection would be admired by even the most serious collectors. These three timepieces are among the highlights.

Bloom’s vintage 1950s Rolex Milgauss 6543 was designed in the atomic age and was Rolex’s first watch made for people working within magnetic fields.

BRITISH ACTOR ORLANDO BLOOM IS MAKING THIS ERA HIS OWN. YOU CAN DEPEND ON HIM FOR A SHOW WORTH WATCHING—OR A WATCH WORTH SHOWING. By Daria Meoli Put it down, perhaps, to a sense of timing. At 22, days after graduating from London’s Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Orlando Bloom was cast in Peter Jackson’s epic—and epically successful—Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Canterbury, England, native immediately followed up his role as Legolas by playing Will Turner in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Bloom has described his early career as feeling like a “rocket to the moon.” Now at 41, Bloom spends less time swashbuckling and more time on smaller passion projects and raising his 7-year-old son, Flynn Christopher Bloom. On-screen, Bloom has some of his biggest star turns accessorized with swords and elf ears; off-screen, as befits a master of timing, he’s an enthusiastic luxury watch collector. Bloom has a penchant for vintage Rolexes, and his collection includes an ultra-rare 1950s Rolex Milgauss 6543 with black rotating bezel and a vintage Rolex Submariner 6538 Big Crown, the model worn by Sean Connery as James Bond in Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger. Proving that a man is never fully dressed without a watch, Bloom paired a burgundy Prada smoking

ACC.HAM.OrlandoBloom.indd 11

jacket and black tuxedo pants with his Bremont AC1 when he escorted on-again-off-again girlfriend Katy Perry to the 2016 Met Gala. Bloom is a practicing Buddhist and a humanitarian. In 2009 he auctioned off several of his valuable watches to raise funds for UNICEF, a global children’s charity for which he is a goodwill ambassador. Pieces on the block included a 1960s Breitling Navitimer 806 and a 1973 Rolex Explorer II 1655 (nicknamed the “Steve McQueen Rolex,” despite a lack of evidence to prove that the screen legend ever owned this model). Months after the auction, a less altruistic organization took possession of Bloom’s prized collection. During the infamous “Bling Ring” crime spree, a group of teenagers from the Hollywood Hills broke into Bloom’s Los Angeles home and stole his watches. Eventually, police apprehended the teens, and Bloom’s watches were returned. The incident hasn’t diminished the actor’s passion for collecting. Whether he is wearing a Patek Philippe Nautilus while out to lunch with Flynn or an IWC Big Pilot 5002 while taking red carpet selfies on Instagram, Bloom continues to mark time in style. And his day is far from done.

Bloom’s IWC Big Pilot 5002 is impressively large at 46mm and has a simple military design that makes it a standout.

One of the most famous Rolex designs, the Submariner is known as the James Bond watch and is built for adventure. This diver’s watch has the ability to resist water pressure down to 1,000 feet.

allowing the wearer to easily increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm for additional comfort. Datejust 36 watches now utilize calibre 3235, a consummate demonstration of Rolex technology offering fundamental gains in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, convenience and reliability. It incorporates the Chronergy escapement patented by Rolex, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, this escapement is insensitive to magnetic interference. An optimized blue Parachrom hairspring is fitted to the oscillator, the true heart of the watch. Manufactured by Rolex in an exclusive paramagnetic alloy, it is up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. Calibre 3235 is equipped with a self-winding module via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its new barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3235 extends to approximately 70 hours. A waterproof Oyster case provides optimum protection for the Datejust 36’s highprecision movement. Like all Rolex watches, the new-generation Datejust 31 and 36 models carry the Superlative Chronometer certification. This exclusive designation testifies that each watch has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, which exceed watchmaking norms and standards. The certification applies to the fully assembled watch (after casing the movement), guaranteeing superlative performance in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer after casing is of the order of −2 /+2 seconds per day, or more than twice that required of an official chronometer. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee. Thanks to its timeless functions and aesthetics, the Rolex Datejust will never go out of fashion. Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 with white mother-of-pearl dial, 45 brilliant-cut diamonds, President bracelet in 18K yellow gold, scratchresistant sapphire crystal with Cyclops lens over date and 55-hour power reserve. Waterproof to 100 meters; Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 with champagne-color sunray finish dial, 10 diamonds in 18K yellow gold settings, Oyster bracelet in yellow Rolesor, scratchresistant sapphire crystal with Cyclops lens over date and 70-hour power reserve. Waterproof to 100 meters.

HAMILTON

Launched in 1945, the Rolex Datejust was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock on the dial, consolidating all the major innovations that Rolex had contributed to modern watchmaking until that point. Its style has spanned eras while still retaining the enduring codes that make it one of the most recognizable watches of today. In 2018 Rolex introduced a new generation of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31, with redesigned case sides and lugs. Available in 18K white, yellow or Everose gold, the models are equipped for the first time with calibre 2236, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Insensitive to magnetic fields, its silicon Syloxi hairspring provides great stability in the face of temperature variations and remains up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. Calibre 2236 is equipped with a self-winding module via a Perpetual rotor and offers a power reserve of approximately 55 hours. The new Datejust 31 watches are fitted on President bracelets, benefiting from a concealed attachment system and ensuring seamless visual continuity between the bracelet and the case. Each also has a concealed folding Crownclasp and includes ceramic inserts inside the links to enhance flexibility and longevity. Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 also has been relaunched this year in both Everose Rolesor (combining Oystersteel and 18-karat Everose gold) and yellow Rolesor (combining Oystersteel and 18-karat yellow gold) versions, each available with a large selection of dials. Rolesor, the combination of gold and steel on a Rolex watch, has been a signature feature of the brand since 1933, when the name was registered. It is an auspicious meeting of two metals: one noble and precious, attractive for its lustre and stability, the other highly resistant, known for its strength and reliability. All of these qualities perfectly mirror the elegance and performance that come together in a Rolex watch. On the Rolesor versions of the new Datejust 36, the bezel, winding crown and center bracelet links are in 18-karat gold (Everose or yellow), while the case and the outer links of the bracelet are in Oystersteel. Available on Oyster or Jubilee bracelets, they also are equipped with an Oysterclasp and include the Easylink rapid extension system (patented by Rolex in 1996),

in plain sight IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN MAGIC, MAYBE YOU JUST HAVEN’T DONNED THE SAMSUNG ODYSSEY WINDOWS “MIXED REALITY” HEADSET YET.

Want to roam the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu? Dive from a cliff in Moab, Utah? Battle gladiators in Rome’s Colosseum? Oh, and you say you’d rather not leave your rec room? VR may be for you. VR, of course, is virtual reality, the technology that can take you almost anywhere—in sensory terms—and into almost any situation. It’s big for games, sure, but it’s also beginning to poke a disconcerting elbow into the world of work, where, as one website says, people can do “daily computing tasks while fully immersed in a 3D space.” You put on a headset, and suddenly you’re in a different environment—yet one that responds to your real-world commands. One of the VR devices drawing buzz in 2018 is the Samsung HMD (that stands for “head-mounted displays”) Odyssey Windows “Mixed Reality” headset with motion controllers. The Odyssey operates on the Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality platform, which was introduced in October 2017. (Mixed reality is a type of VR in which computergenerated content and real-world content can react to each other in real time.) With the Odyssey headset you can explore exotic locales and settings. And a next-level social media network, vTime, connects users from around the world—or around the block—in engaging virtual environments, such as cozy campfires, mountain cliffs and glacier tops. While those snowy mountains may be virtual, you can get fit for real. There are several available routines for people looking to buff up using a VR platform, including BOXVR virtual gym, the Bitslap HIIT (highintensity interval training) app and the MoveStudio dance and cardio app. (If you decide to sweat with VR, use caution. The Odyssey does not prevent you from walking into walls.) The Odyssey brings users into the next phase of entertainment. Mixed reality allows users to drop into the middle of a documentary about Syria, sail the America’s Cup with a real race team or watch the latest episode of This is Us in a virtual theater. The built-in headset has 360-degree sound, giving virtual voices and ambient noises depth and distance. The Odyssey and the Windows Mixed Reality platform can be installed in compatible devices in minutes. And, with a price below $500, this device is a way for VR newbies to check out the world of augmented reality. Can you see it now?

HONORING ITS FEROCIOUS FOREBEARS, THE MERCEDES-BENZ AMG SL65 ROADSTER WILL MOVE YOU, THRILL YOU—AND MASSAGE YOU, TOO.

Drivers who experience the joy of racing in a sporty Mercedes-Benz AMG SL65 convertible owe a nod of gratitude to a couple of speed-obsessed Germans. In the 1960s, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher were young engineers working on the 300 SE racing engine at Daimler-Benz when the company discontinued all motorsports activities. But the pair had an unrelenting passion for speed and a vision for modeling road vehicles after racing cars. In 1967, they left Daimler-Benz to found Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach, or AMG. The two tirelessly tinkered with valves and pistons as an independent engineering firm specializing in performance improvements for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. After a successful arrangement by which AMG upgrades were available and serviceable through selected Mercedes-Benz dealers worldwide, in 1993, the two firms unveiled the C36 AMG, their first jointly developed vehicle. Today the engineering firm is owned by the German automaker and more than 50 Mercedes–AMG performance models have hit the streets. In 2018, the AMG SL65 extends the blissful union between AMG’s muscular engineering and Mercedes-Benz’s lavish design. One of the most powerful in its class, this roadster packs a punch with a 6.0-liter AMG V-12 biturbo engine that pumps out 621 horsepower. Able to go 0–60 in just 3.9 seconds, this model reaches its top speed of 186 mph in what seems like the blink of an eye. Mercedes-Benz elevates the roadster experience with Active Body Control technology. The suspension’s sensors and electronically controlled hydraulics

respond to the car’s grip in milliseconds. An automatic four-wheel level control lowers the vehicle as its speed increases to enhance aerodynamics and stability. The height also can be raised for bumpy roads or steep climbs. Like its SL forerunners, the 2018 AMG SL65 provides as much swank as it does soup. The panoramic sunroof creates an open-air feeling even when the coupe is closed. The high-tech glass controls exposure to harmful UV and infrared rays from the sun while keeping the cabin of the vehicle cool. The roof ’s electrochromatic technology automatically changes the glass from transparent to opaque based on the amount of thermal energy entering the cabin. When drivers are ready to feel the wind in their hair, the SL can be transformed to an open roadster in less than 20 seconds, even while traveling up to 25 mph. The car has 12-way power seats with memory, which are upholstered in Nappa leather. The seats also are outfitted with a neck-level heating system, a massage feature to help prevent fatigue on long trips, and adjustable lumbar, side bolsters and shoulder supports for tailored comfort. Passionate music fans will rejoice after switching on a BeoSound system designed by Bang & Olufsen engineers. Even when the wind is whipping about the cabin, 12 active speakers and 900 watts of musical power create ideal sound. With its twin-turbo V-12 muscle and superb amenities, this innovative and powerful roadster brings Aufrecht and Melcher’s passion for motorsports and design into a wide-awake 2019.

INTRODUCING

DAVIDOR

DAVIDOR IS ONE OF FRANCE’S BRIGHTEST AND YOUNGEST JEWELRY MAISONS. IT IS THE SOBRIQUET OF THE BRAND’S FOUNDER, DAVID GUSKY. A FRENCH BRAND THAT COMBINES BOTH TRADITION AND INNOVATION, DAVIDOR BALANCES CONTEMPORARY LUXURY WITH JEWELRY EXPERTISE.

32

HAMILTON

The maison’s inaugural collection, L’Arc de DAVIDOR, celebrates a fluid pattern of arches that adorn rings, bracelets, pendants and earrings, available in 18K rose, white and yellow gold, with and without pavé diamond details. Each of these pieces features distinct, original ceramic lacquer colors that capture both the sophistication and whimsy of the collection. Highlighting the essence and identity of the brand, the L’Arc de DAVIDOR collection is as refreshing as it is easy to wear for both women and men alike. Inspired by Italy’s Palladian villas and France’s Parisian arcades, DAVIDOR’s vision is designed around the architectural and spiritual strength of the ancient arch. With the softness of its curve, the subtle balance of its proportions and the precision of its vertical lines, the arch is the cornerstone of DAVIDOR’s signature style and attests to the level of craftsmanship exemplified by the maison’s ateliers in Paris. This one-of-a-kind Art Deco inspired bracelet is truly a work of art. Handcrafted in precious platinum by our expert artisans, this bracelet tells a story through its 28 individual hinged panels, set with round brilliant-cut diamonds, baguette diamonds, buff top caliber-cut sapphires, buff top marquise-shaped emeralds and special cut rubies, further detailed with specially cut sections of black onyx. The variety of gemstone shapes and cutting styles makes for an unusual level of detail, and requires the very best skills of our gemstone setters to accomplish the desired result. The bracelet depicts a beautiful and ethereal scene, with detail of a pavilion along a stream, with a bridge crossing the stream and further decorated with trees and floral motifs. This bracelet took over one year to create and is one of a kind, signed Hamilton. The bracelet is presented with the original rendering, which provided the design inspiration for the piece.

LIKE A TIME CAPSULE FROM THE GILDED AGE, THE REDISCOVERED POCKET WATCH OF AMERICAN TYCOON STEPHEN S. PALMER REDEFINED THE HISTORY OF ITS STORIED MAKER. By Christen Fisher

Created at the close of the 19th century, the Patek Philippe Grand Complication, No. 97912, shown opposite, is the ultimate horological rarity: Not a single scholar knew of its existence until the heirs of Stephen S. Palmer, its original owner, sent the watch to Christie’s in 2011. The open-face, minute-repeating, perpetual calendar, splitseconds chronograph pocket watch with grande and petite sonnerie and phases of the moon is now regarded as the first Grand Complication timepiece created by Patek Philippe.

48

HAMILTON

Although he stood only 5'2" tall, Stephen Squires Palmer was a titan of industry and a champion of technological advancement. Born in New York in 1853 and educated at the College of New Jersey (renamed Princeton University in 1896), Palmer amassed a fortune in the zinc business and went on to serve as an officer of 38 corporations in such diverse industries as mining, railroads and banking. He founded and designed the town of Palmerton, Penn., served as a trustee of Princeton University from 1908 to 1913, and in 1903, along with Cornelius Vanderbilt and Stuyvesant Fish, backed a proposal for a moving sidewalk system to alleviate pedestrian congestion in Manhattan. The only thing Palmer may have worked harder at than business was avoiding having his picture taken. According to William Smelas, vice president of the Palmerton Area Historical Society, Palmer avoided the camera because he was self-conscious about his height. In the few photos that include him, Smelas says, Palmer can be found standing on a knoll behind other people, presumably to create the illusion of stature. While he sought the background in photographs, in other matters of life Palmer strove— figuratively at least—to be out in front. At the dedication ceremony for the Palmer Physical Laboratory at Princeton University in 1909, a gift then valued at $500,000, Palmer gave an

This page: Original documentation, including a certificate of origin and warranty, and sales invoice (top) accompanied Stephen S. Palmer’s Patek Philippe Grand Complication pocket watch when it first arrived at Christie’s. According to the paperwork, the watch was manufactured in 1898. After a century at rest, it remained pristine, as this closeup image of the caliber (right) attests. Opposite page: The 18K pink gold case of Palmer’s Patek is engraved with his monogram, “SSP.”

almost prescient speech in which he noted the “absolute necessity of extending Princeton’s usefulness in the field of science and placing her in a position where she can respond to the demands placed upon her.” His gift would house the Princeton physics department for more than 60 years, where it would become a hotbed for nuclear research and play a role in the Manhattan Project. Palmer’s interest in technological development also was embodied in one of his prized possessions, a timepiece that, well, time forgot—until almost 100 years after his death, when a wooden box would arrive at Christie’s. Inside the box was a perfectly preserved Patek Philippe Grand Complication, No. 97912, specifically an open-face, minute-repeating, perpetual calendar, split-seconds chronograph pocket watch with grande and petite sonnerie and phases of the moon, housed in an 18K pink gold case monogrammed “SSP.” Miraculously, it was also a true complete set, with genuine presentation box containing an extra crystal and two spare mainsprings, as well as the original paperwork including certificate of origin and warranty, sales invoice and hand-typed operating instructions.

10/24/18 2:49 PM

According to that paperwork, the watch was manufactured in 1898, pre-dating Ohio automobile manufacturer James Ward Packard’s Patek Grand Complication by 16 years and Henry Graves Jr.’s Super Complication by more than 30, thus making it the very first Patek Philippe Grand Complication watch ever made. It was sold on Oct. 3, 1900, in Geneva, Switzerland for 6,000 Swiss Francs to none other than Stephen S. Palmer. One of the last Swiss watchmaking companies

“If I could only own one Patek in the world, this would be it,” says John Reardon, senior vice president and international head of watches at Christie’s. Uniquely cased in pink gold, the Palmer Patek Philippe Grand Complication, No. 97912, left Geneva in this factory box in October 1900, and has been paired with it ever since.

that is still family owned, Patek Philippe boasts an almost 180-year history of serving the most demanding collectors and patrons in the world. Noted for its horological innovation and artistry, Patek has placed exceptionally crafted timepieces into the hands of such famous and influential people as Queen Victoria, Pablo Picasso, George S. Patton, John F. Kennedy, Paul McCartney, Ed Sheeran, Vladimir Putin, the Dalai Lama and Brad Pitt. The firm’s famous advertising campaign proclaims, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely take care of it for the next generation,” underscoring that a Patek can be a long-term investment. Certainly that was the case with Palmer’s timepiece: After he died in 1913, his watch sat virtually untouched in a family vault for generations until its auction at Christie’s in 2011, when it fetched upwards of $2.2 million. “If I could only own one Patek in the world, this would be it,” says John Reardon, senior vice president and international head of watches at Christie’s. “The pink gold is unique,” he notes, as it is the only known example to have been cased in that particular alloy. Pink gold was a stylish choice for pocket watches in the late 19th century, and it’s also possible that Palmer’s financial interests in minerals, particularly copper, influenced his choice, for the addition of copper along with silver is what gives the gold its pinkish hue. Palmer was not just an occasional watch buyer. The original invoice shows that he went to Geneva personally to collect what was then the most complicated watch ever finished at Patek Philippe. Additionally, the invoice states that on the same day he purchased two other complicated timepieces, one of them also monogrammed with his initials, and that in exchange he traded in yet another complicated watch. Palmer was clearly a well-established client of Patek Philippe and an avid and knowledgeable collector, whose business reputation and social standing had impelled the firm to achieve its highest technological achievement to date. Patek would later go on to create other Grand Complications of course, most notably the legendary Super Complication for Henry Graves Jr. in 1933, but it all started with the Palmer. With an impeccable provenance and in pristine condition, the Stephen S. Palmer pocket watch burst onto the auction scene just seven years ago. The rediscovery of this watch after a century in hiding literally redefined the history of Patek Philippe and the Grand Complication tradition of watchmaking. It’s fitting that the owner of such a timepiece was driven by a passion for technological innovation in his private, professional and public endeavors.

FATHER AND SON LEFT AN INDELIBLE STAMP ON THE CAMPUS AND TOWN THEY LOVED.

This page, clockwise from top left: With his gift of the Palmer Physical Laboratory, Stephen S. Palmer equipped Princeton University to be a world-class center for physics research. Sculptures of Benjamin Franklin appear twice on the façade, in a niche beside the main door and high on a wall, as a glum-looking gargoyle. A mid-century view shows one of the lab rooms where undergraduates and eminent physicists worked side by side. The building is now part of Frist Campus Center.

Princeton, N.J. has been home to a long list of luminaries, including two signers of the Declaration of Independence, two U.S. presidents, novelists F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Mann, and scientists Albert Einstein and Robert Oppenheimer, each of whom had a profound effect on the world, but it was a pair of Palmers—Stephen and his son Edgar—who had a uniquely profound effect on the college and town alike. Both Stephen and Edgar graduated from Princeton University, and both went on to serve as trustees. In 1908, Stephen donated the Palmer Physical Laboratory, which housed the university’s physics department until 1969. Considered the best in the world, the facility boasted such features as a liquid air plant, an atom-smashing cyclotron and a Foucault pendulum.

ACC.PalmerPatek-8pg.indd 54

10/24/18 2:49 PM

In 1914, Edgar donated Palmer Stadium and named it in honor of his father. Designed by Henry J. Hardenburgh, who also had designed the physics building, the stadium had a seating capacity of 42,000 and was home to Princeton’s football and track and field teams for more than 80 years. Because American football was invented at Princeton and dominated by the Tigers in the 19th century, Princeton has claimed a record 28 national titles. The last time the Tigers won the national championship was in 1950, when Dick Kazmaier, the 1951 Heisman Trophy winner, was a junior. In 1929, while he was president of Princeton Municipal Improvement Inc., Edgar unveiled his plans for a new European-style municipal center that would include space for retail, office and residential use as well as a post office, hotel and playhouse. Designed by architect Thomas Stapleton to be a mini-version of Rockefeller Center in the style of another Rockefeller project, Colonial Williamsburg, that space today is known as Palmer Square. After 80 years, it is still the beating heart of Princeton, N.J.

This page, clockwise from top left: Edgar Palmer III, Class of 1903, donated Palmer Stadium in honor of his father. Seating for 42,000 was expanded by temporary bleachers at the open end of the horseshoe, as seen in this early aerial view of a capacity crowd. With Palmer Stadium as their home, the Tigers played undefeated seasons in 1920, ’22, ’33, ’35, ’50, ’51 and ’64. Palmer House at 1 Bayard Lane, built in 1824 by Commodore Robert Stockton, was later owned by Edgar Palmer; his widow bequeathed the house to the university. Edgar was also the mastermind of Palmer Square. The famous bronze tiger in the center of the square commemorates his vision.

The Best of Princeton:

THOUGH NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO PLAY FAVORITES IN THIS REMARKABLE TOWN, WE’VE CURATED PRINCETON’S DIVERSE OFFERINGS IN OUR TAKE ON ITS VERY BEST. by R ae Padulo Princeton is a vibrant lesson in contradiction. Town and gown. A globally recognized name with a Mayberry vibe. From textbook-worthy history to cutting-edge technology, tacos to “tree streets,” the storied mansions of Library Place to the splash of Community Park Pool, Princeton is duplicitous in the most wonderful way. Princeton University and its illustrious reputation have long attracted the notable, the genius and the literary greats, but the town also stands strongly on its own two feet: treating the community and visitors to world class theater and art, award-winning schools, masterful architecture, and glittering shopping and dining. And don’t let the pedigree fool you, there’s also a profound community spirit here: an energizing diversity, a palpable social consciousness and a charming walkability that keeps its sidewalks filled.

Stalwarts

With some skirting a century in business, these long-loved Princeton institutions continue to be sought after by the generations with Nassau Street home to many of the old guard.

Popcorn left you hungry? Maybe it’s plate-sized pancakes for dinner from PJ’s Pancake House, open until 10 p.m., or a late night Phat Lady from student-loved sandwich shop Hoagie Haven, where lines commonly snake out the door, even at 2 a.m.

This “Best in NJ.com,” non-profit theater has been showing independent, foreign and classic movies since 1920, and takes its name from a rose garden that used to bloom next door.

A collector’s dream, patrons spend hours digging for gold in the shop’s unmatchable vinyl, CD and movie collections. At the end of the street, on Spring, is the oldest bicycle shop in America (true!). Established in 1891 and family-owned, Kopp’s Cycle is the go-to for “the basics and the very best” in cycling, including expert repairs.

Small but mighty, these independents have carved out truly original spaces in Princeton. Each boasting their own distinctive personality and culture, these special food shops have developed a cult following. • SMALL BATCH SOUL SISTERS That rich, roasted aroma, the live music, the constantly rotating artwork, the happy community vibe and, of course, those wonderful “Wordlings,” who serve up the dark stuff with humor, quirkiness and not a little aplomb, all belong to beloved Small World Coffee. Houseguests, bring home breakfast: Arrive early to The Little Chef Pastry Shop and snag what could be the most buttery, flaky, authentic croissants outside of Paris. Chef Edwige Fils-Aime also creates meticulous pastries that are layered perfection. The rush of Nassau Street too much sometimes? Recharge your batteries at these spots that provide cool refuge. Find inspiration on Princeton University’s leafy 600-acre campus amid impressive sculptures like Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads, photo op-friendly Oval with Points by Henry Moore and, from former professor/ceramicist, Toshiko Takaezu, Remembrance, a bronze bell erected in honor of the 13 alumni who lost their lives on September 11th. Or, for a more immersive experience, head to the world-renowned Princeton University Art Museum and escape to the cool hush of its incredible 70,000 piece collection. A short walk from campus are Jugtown’s tucked-away and refreshed Harrison Street Park, and, if you find yourself with an hour on Fridays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. or Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Princeton United Methodist Church provides tours of the stunning St. George and the Dragon, a rare stained glass window by famous Tiffany Studios. Noteworthy Newcomers

Three newcomers are elevating snacks to new heights— from dinner to dessert, and the healthy in-betweens. “C’mon in. We’re OPEN. It’s a fricking taco party in here.” The sense of humor on the door, as well as on its social media, has already struck a chord with Princeton’s younger set. This fourth iteration of Tacoria might just be the most popular newbie in town, thanks to the caliente interiors and music choices that pair perfectly with its creative Mexican fare. Milk & Cookies mixes fine ingredients with lots of love to make freshbaked cookies, most of which also are available gluten-free (yay!). Flavors like classic chocolate chip joins the not-so classic lavender-lemon London Foggy and many chilled milk options to round out your order nicely. The healthy set will flock to The Salad and Smoothie Market where chopped, made-to-order salads and smoothies are fresh as fresh can be. Don’t worry if you’re not feeling the kale; a back room is well-stocked with a rainbow of candy.

BUT TODAY, MORE THAN A CENTURY LATER, THE COCKTAIL OF PALM BEACH HAS DEVELOPED A TRUE COMPLEXITY OF FLAVORS THANKS TO THE CONTINUAL IMPACT OF CULTURE AND SOPHISTICATION, AS WELL AS THE AREA’S GORGEOUS COASTAL ENVIRONS. by Lisa Smith Guidebooks may serve as an acceptable resource for visitors who want to see Palm Beach, but those looking to genuinely savor this luxe libation need to be privy to the secrets only locals know. We invite those ambitious travelers to come with us behind the sculptured hedges and off the beaten path and discover the real Palm Beach.

Stalwarts

Appreciating Palm Beach requires a bit of a history lesson. But far from the yawn-inducing lectures you may have endured in school, this town’s history is replete with a myriad of fascinating personalities and unique adventures, as well as more than its fair share of scandals. If you’re ready to step back in time, seek out these spots:

INSIDER TIP: While the museum offers four free options for touring (a docent-led tour, an audio tour, a Flagler Museum app and printed brochures), consider upping the ante by securing a spot on its House and Hotel tour. This in-demand experience (make reservations early) takes participants through the Flagler as well as the legendary Breakers Hotel.

• FLAGLER MUSEUM Prepare to have serious house envy as you encounter Whitehall, the 75-room, 100,000-square-foot mansion that Henry Flagler had built as a wedding present for his wife. This residence-turned-National Historic Landmark allows visitors to enter a world of privilege. In addition to touring Whitehall in all of its opulence, visitors can explore Henry Flagler’s private railcar, No. 91, and visit the museum’s permanent exhibits on Flagler’s life and career as well as a varying exhibition gallery on Florida history and the Gilded Age during the fall and winter months.

• THE FOUR ARTS BOTANICAL GARDENS Originally designed by the Garden Club of Palm Beach in 1938 as demonstration gardens to show new residents which plants would grow in the South Florida climate, the Four Arts Botanical Gardens is a visually stunning testament to the creative potential of tropical landscaping. Portions of the gardens are still themed in terms of their botanical selection and design to reflect popular architectural styles of Palm Beach, but the overall space has been expanded to include an outdoor sculpture garden and more than three acres of exotic plants and flowers with bougainvillea-covered pergola walkways, fountains and plenty of al fresco seating prime for contemplation or conversation. INSIDER TIP: Download a mobile tour of the gardens at fourarts.oncell.com or pick up one of the complimentary booklets at the front entrance that describe each of the 22 sculptures. • WORTH AVENUE This exclusive shopping district grew to prominence in the 1920s thanks, in part, to weekly luncheon fashion shows held at the nearby Everglades Club that served as a launching pad for high-end designers, such as Valentino and Givenchy. Worth Avenue has since earned worldwide distinction as an upscale shopping mecca with an expansive variety of shops, galleries and dining options that offer everything from couture to carpaccio (a must-try at Bice Ristorante). INSIDER TIP: Abandon straight-forward thinking and embrace the joy of meandering by strolling through the vias and courtyards that branch off from the main avenue. There you will discover more shops, hidden dining gems like local soup, sandwich and salad hotspot Café Delamar (get there before the lunch rush as daily specials sell out) and artistic finds (browse the Surovek Gallery) that will make your shopping adventure truly unique. • GREEN’S PHARMACY Across the street from St. Edward’s Church, where the Kennedys frequently attended Mass, sits an unassuming luncheonette with a green and white awning. Green’s Pharmacy, established in 1938, is a Palm Beach tradition and throwback to a simpler time of soda shops and counter seating. MENU PICK: Two words… chocolate milkshake.

Green and Clean

If you’re a naturalist or just like using your outside voice, here are a handful of ideas picked fresh for you. • LOGGERHEAD MARINELIFE CENTER Appropriately located in Juno Beach, which is known as one of the most active nesting beaches in the world, the Loggerhead Marinelife Center is an ocean conservation facility devoted to education, preservation and the rehabilitation of injured sea turtles. Visitors can learn about the plight of coastal creatures at the indoor exhibition hall before heading outside to meet the patients at the turtle hospital and find out each of their stories. INSIDER TIP: Check the Center’s website for a calendar of events. During summer months, you may be lucky enough to participate in hatchling release while winter brings eco-programming, such as hammock hikes and living beach expeditions. • 3 NATIVES AND BREATHE SALT AND YOGA With fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, dynamic combinations and 5 percent of all Sambazon fruit costs going back to the Brazilian community, it’s no wonder 3 Native’s Açaí bowls have a major fan following. Since it’s the perfect post-exercise refuel, why not stop by the Jupiter location at 287 East Indiantown Rd. after giving SUP Yoga a try? Put on by Breathe Salt and Yoga, this form of yoga performed on paddleboards is a great way to connect with nature. MENU PICK: Any of the Açaí bowls. (And be sure to stock up on a few of their cold-pressed juices.)

• ANN NORTON SCULPTURE GARDENS If you love both impressive artistry and lush nature, this is the garden party for you. After her husband Ralph Norton (founder of the Norton Museum) passed away, Ann Weaver Norton began the most notable chapter in her artistic journey with the creation of nine monumental sculptures in her expansive backyard. She also secured the promise of friend and famed botanist Sir Peter Smithers right before her death that he would sustain her vision of the gardens going forward. Today’s visitors journey into a jungle-like setting with over 250 rare varieties of palm trees and unusual tropical vegetation species where Norton’s massive sculptures seem to rise up from the dense landscaping and reveal themselves in a dramatic fashion. Located at 253 Barcelona Rd. INSIDER TIP: In you are in town in December, get your holiday spirit on by visiting The Festival of Trees—an annual event hosted by the ANSG with professionally decorated, wow-worthy trees sponsored by area patrons and businesses. • BIKING ON THE LAKE TRAIL There may be no better way to explore the Island of Palm Beach than by bike. Stop by the Palm Beach Bicycle Trail Shop (palmbeachbicycle.com) in the Royal Poinciana Plaza to choose your rental ride and then head off on the Lake Trail, which is only 100 feet from the shop’s front door. This 5 ½ mile path runs along the western edge of Palm Beach beside the water and the backyards of many exclusive homes. Some of its expansive views include West Palm Beach, the Lake Worth Lagoon, berthed yachts as well as a massive kapok tree that was transplanted from the Amazon rainforests. HAMILTON

Dress the Part

Want to be sure your wardrobe is Palm Beach ready? Follow these unwritten fashion rules: Men:

Invest in a killer bathing suit. This is a daytime must for the Palm Beach male. Select trunks in coastal colors with a fun print, like those from locally-based Strong Boalt (strongboalt.com), and pair them with a lightweight polo and flip-flops or espadrilles. Unless you have a board meeting planned, leave your socks at home. If you want to go all out, stop by Stubbs & Wootton (stubbsandwootton.com) and pick up a pair of their famed velvet or needlepoint slippers.

Women:

Get colorful. Palm Beach is not a place for your LBD. Embrace the spirited coastal life with dynamically hued wares from Palm Beach fashion icon Lilly Pulitzer (lillypulitzer. com) or other modern designers with bright dispositions.

Local Secrets

Rock a statement-making piece of jewelry. Let jewelry be the stand-out star of your ensemble performance, with your other wardrobe pieces serving as talented supporting players. Hamilton Jewelers is a great place to start the casting process.

• THE SECRET BAR AT COYO TACO Coyo Taco, the fast-casual Mexican street food eatery at the Royal Poinciana Plaza, has a secret. Those in the know walk down the back hallway, past the restrooms and kitchen to enter a chichi hidden bar, almost like a modern-day speakeasy. • PALM BEACH PAR 3 While you might not think a public course would be posh enough to please Palm Beach elite, the Palm Beach Par 3 parking lot packed with six-figure rides begs to differ. Sitting on 39 acres at 2345 South Ocean Blvd. both on the ocean and the Intracoastal, the course offers breathtaking views and a challenging playing experience. • GRANDVIEW PUBLIC MARKET Just on the other side of the train tracks, in the heart of the newly evolving West Palm Beach Warehouse District, is this see-and-be-seen venue which is, quite possibly, one of the coolest interpretations of a food hall ever. Those with disparate cravings can come as a group, each choose their own unique culinary adventures from ramen, burgers, tacos, poke bowls and more and then sit together on the outside porch at the communal tables.

• COASTAL GIRLS Located in the midst of West Palm Beach’s Antique Row and run by two sisters whose personalities make shopping fun, Coastal Girls is the place to get your island groove on. Cork clutches, colorful tassel earrings and stylish beach tunics are just the beginning of the must-have additions to your summer wardrobe.

TIMEPIECES The Oyster case has long been one of the determining factors in Rolex’s reputation for excellence, and it constitutes an important milestone in the history of contemporary watchmaking: Invented by Rolex in 1926, it was the world’s first waterproof case for a wristwatch thanks to its patented system of screwing down the bezel, case back and winding crown against the middle case. In 1927, Rolex put its effectiveness to the test by equipping a young Englishwoman, Mercedes Gleitze, with a watch for her swim across the English Channel. After more than 10 hours in the water, it continued to work perfectly, providing irrefutable proof that the Oyster case was waterproof. Today, thanks to the case’s hermetic construction (solid middle case, screw-down case back and crown, friction-fitted crystal and bezel), all Rolex Oyster watches are guaranteed waterproof to a depth of at least 100 meters (328 feet), increasing to 300 meters (984 feet) for the Submariner divers’ models and up to 3,900 meters (12,795 feet) for the Rolex Deepsea. The Oyster’s middle case (the central section of the case) is stamped and machined out of a solid block of 904L steel, 18-karat gold or 950 platinum. It is extremely robust and forms the backbone to which all the other parts of the case are securely fitted. Some professional models

feature a crown guard on the side; these shoulders are stamped as an integral part of the middle case. The sapphire crystal is mounted on a gasket, and the whole is fitted against the flange of the case and hermetically clamped tight by the bezel or a sealing ring. Oyster case backs are hermetically screwed down against the middle case. All models in the Oyster collection are equipped with the Oyster case and a Twinlock or Triplock winding crown. The Twinlock screwdown winding crown, developed and patented by Rolex, comprises a double system of seals, guaranteeing waterproofness to a depth of 100 meters. The Triplock comprises 10 components made of materials selected for their inherent qualities, including 18-karat gold or 904L steel for the crown and polymers for the gaskets. Once assembled, the system is screwed down against the Oyster case, offering watertight security akin to a submarine’s hatch. All Oyster cases are manufactured in-house by Rolex. After the final control operations, every Oyster watch is immersed in water and subjected to a pressure 10 percent greater than that found at the depth to which it is guaranteed—25 percent more in the case of divers’ watches. Robust and waterproof, this perfectly proportioned and elegant watch case blends form and function.

WHAT DO THE PHOTOGRAPHIC SUBJECTS OF THIS FORMER TV ANCHORMAN HAVE IN COMMON? THEY’RE COLORFUL, ETHEREAL—AND WET. Harry Martin’s love for photography was born at age 9. He worked in news, shooting 16-millimeter film and videotape and covering political conventions. Though his TV news career brought him out from behind the camera to the anchor desk, he never lost his passion for images. Now 66, he’s back to that passion in a special way—taking fashion photographs of subjects who are underwater. Martin most recently sat at the anchor desk for the stations My9NJ (WWOR) and Fox 5 New York (WNYW). As his broadcast career was heating up, he continued to pursue photography as a hobby. He also became immersed in another interest: scuba diving. While on a scuba excursion with his family, Martin began taking underwater pictures of his children. The light through the water created both a real and abstract vibe in his photos. Inspiration struck and once he found a willing model, Martin cranked up the heat in his backyard pool in Cresskill, N.J., to 80 degrees, tossed a metal backdrop into the deep end and created an underwater studio. As a reporter and anchor, Martin was an expert storyteller. That instinct for communicating great stories shines through in his photographs, which remind one of the late Philippe Halsman’s photos of artist Salvador Dali leaping in the air. (If only Dali were still around for a diving immersion!) Part of the allure of Martin’s dreamy underwater series is the way his work reflects the personalities and backstories of his subjects. While he often uses professional models, he also has shot an emergency room nurse, a nuclear chemist, a former Penthouse model and a founder of a Costa Rican community center who works with the United Nations on clean water initiatives in developing countries. The photographer began the “Harry Martin Underwater” series in 2013 and continues to build the collection, shooting from April through November each year. His work has been shown in several galleries in the Northeast, and he participated in the Neiman Marcus “Art of Fashion” program. He also counts a boutique jeweler and dress designers as commercial clients. So, after five years of underwater photo shoots, who is at the top of Martin’s dream subject list? Lady Gaga. He has said he is drawn to her adventurous spirit.

84

“There is no common thread that runs through [this collection],” underwater photographer Harry Martin has said. “Every picture is different—some graphically oriented, some dreamy, and others evocative of motion.”

Martin has said the artistic surprises he finds in shooting underwater are jaw-dropping. He has to anticipate how the water is going to affect the models’ clothes and hair. Because of the way the light behaves, shooting underwater gives Martin’s work a dream-like quality.

MAKE THESE ALLURING SOUTH ASIAN ISLANDS YOUR PRIVATE PARADISE—IN ONE OF FIVE CAN’T-MISS RESORTS. By Daria Meoli

Known as the “Money Isles” since the 2nd century, the Maldives (officially the Republic of Maldives) is a jet-set destination synonymous with exotic luxury. John Legend proposed to Chrissy Teigen here because it’s so romantic. The Beckhams spend family vacations here because it’s so posh. Prince William and Kate Middleton had a sexy getaway here because the string of luminescent islands is so secluded. Celebrities such as Madonna, Naomie Harris and Michael Phelps flock to this island nation because of the azure waters and sugar-white sand beaches. Located in the Indian Ocean southwest of India, the Maldives strikes a balance between relaxation and adventure while providing visitors with a sense that they are uncovering one of nature’s hidden gems without sacrificing modern comfort. The 26 atolls comprise 1,192 small islands, of which 202 are inhabited, and 90 resort islands offer unspoiled nature and unrivaled privacy. The Maldives’ name is derived from the Sanskrit term for “garland of islands.” Consisting of 99 HAMILTON 91

percent water, this archipelago is home to a spectacular array of marine life. There are extensive coral reefs, and scuba diving is a huge draw for experts and beginners, offering the opportunity to get up close to sea turtles, eagle rays, whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, eels, puffers, lobsters, clams and a wide variety of colorful fish. Divers can even go on a guided fluorescent night dive or snorkel and see coral and other organisms glow in neon colors as if they were under a black light. Tourists can experience the surreal when they swim with whale sharks, one of the world’s largest mammals, at Manta Point. For visitors who prefer to keep their heads above water, chartering a fishing vessel and taking a traditional dhoni boat to watch dolphins frolic at sunset are hard-to-resist options too. The islands can be a spiritual place for those looking to de-stress. The Maldives’ culture reflects a fusion of Buddhism and Islam that dates back to 300 B.C. Many resorts offer sunrise and sunset yoga, wellness retreats and Ayurveda-influenced spa treatments. After the sun goes down, Maldives has stunning views of the night sky. Because it’s located just above the Equator, both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres’ stars are visible. While a blanket on the beach can make for cozy stargazing, visitors can see the stars up close with a powerful telescope located at Anantara Kihavah’s open-air observatory and cocktail bar. Not all visitors to Maldives are on a pilgrimage to commune with nature. Some are there for the party. At Finolhu, a resort in Baa Atoll,

pleasure seekers rejoice in a beach-party vibe that features internationally acclaimed DJs and three-day long festivals hosted throughout the year. So, are there accommodations that justify the 20-plus hour flight from the U.S.? That’d be a yes. If ever you wanted to plan an affair to remember, it’s your wedding. Bronson van Wyck’s tips will help you plan the celebration of a lifetime – and one your guests will never forget. Do sweat the small stuff. Well, just a few small things. While you shouldn’t stress about making your entire wedding perfect, spend time on a few special touches that make your big day really feel like your day. “Sometimes the subtle details are the ones that set the tone and say that a host has thought about things,” van Wyck told One Kings Lane. What those details are depends on your personal taste, but some of van Wyck’s favorites include “an escort card table [that] was an old potting table lined with wildflowers and simple cards that were each hand tied with lavender. The guests’ very first impression of the ceremony on a warm summer day was the subtle, clean scent of lavender in the air,” he told Armarium. And his favorite dinner setup? “On the back lawn of a historic villa in Tuscany. It was so simple, with two long tables, a slew of candles, potted herbs and flowers, and bistro lights overhead. I loved the drama and the intimacy of the seating 400 guests at only two tables.” The touches that truly matter to you will be part of what you remember most years later. Whimsical, personal details. At a party he threw for Coach, van Wyck and team incorporated dinosaurs, the brand’s new favorite animal, throughout the event: Dinosaur topiaries with floral leis greeted guests waiting for drinks at the bar, while colorful dino pins were included in the treats for partygoers to take home. Have fun with your own quirky details that make you and your partner special. continued...

For example, van Wyck planned a wedding for an ultra-bold couple who wanted red everything: “From the flowers to the draped ceiling to luxurious tablecloths and even the guests’ attire, the bride’s favorite color cocooned their guests in every way…. It’s fun to work with a color palette that is so simple yet so dramatic,” van Wyck said. Don’t forget this is your day – and one that’s meant to be a joyous celebration! “When you’re planning a wedding, there’s the sacred part of it, which is the relationship between the two people who are coming together,” van Wyck explained to Business Insider. “But there’s also the aspect of throwing just a knock-down party, and that can be fun.” Create opportunities for guests to enjoy special moments. No doubt you’ve already planned to keep your guests well fed (and well drunk!). But van Wyck recommended taking it a step further. “You also have a responsibility to their emotional well-being—what do they need in addition to a drink in their hand? Think about how you put people together. Create moments where guests flirt and get to know each other,” van Wyck told Barneys. One of his top tips for creating intimacy is “a sparklers moment. It doesn’t seem to get old for me. It’s a fun surprise for guests young to old, and it brings the group together,” he told Armarium. “Two guests might share and hold one together or help each other light them just in the nick of time.” Plus, he added, the glow of a sparkler creates a perfect nighttime photo op. “When your friends and family can walk away from the night with a memory or a new friend,” van Wyck said, “they will treasure that long after the social media post has moved down the feed.”

TIRED OF THE SAME-OLD, SAME-OLD? WAKE UP YOUR TASTE BUDS WITH NUTRITIOUS, FLAVORFUL DISHES FROM THE WESTERN PART OF THIS SURPRISING CONTINENT. By Donna Rolando Savvy chefs like to keep up with food trends, and one thing that’s “on trend” this year is the cuisine of West Africa. If you haven’t yet taken a gustatory jaunt to that corner of the planet, sampling the stews, rice dishes and desserts for which it’s known, there’s no time like now. West African food is flavorful, but not too spicy, and—in the style of good home cooking—a healthy choice. In fact, when it comes to quality, the West African diet fared better than its U.S. counterpart in a study published in The Lancet Global Health. It’s the reliance on veggies, legumes, staple starches and lean meats—not processed foods—that makes West African dishes a bounty of good nutrition. This cuisine is on the menu in many big U.S. cities these days—in eateries run by African transplants and in other restaurants whose chefs are bold enough to embrace what’s novel—so no ocean-crossing will be required to treat your taste buds to something excitingly new. Check out these menu highlights:

SENEGALESE CHICKEN YASSA From the Casamance region in the south of Senegal comes chicken yassa (or yassa poulet), a spicy stew served up in households throughout Africa. It’s also available at Senegalese restaurants around the globe, so if this is your first time with West African cooking, consider chicken yassa a good introduction. Well, that’s if you like onions. This is a dish that gets much of its flavor from caramelized onions! The chicken, beef, lamb or fish (all are right for making yassa) is marinated with oil, lemon and a dash of mustard, usually overnight. (In Africa this marinating is often necessary to soften tough meat; here in the U.S. it can make it melt in your mouth.) JOLLOF RICE This one-pot classic rice dish draws its flavor from fried and stewed tomatoes and is so engrained in African life that it’s often considered the thread that unites families. No pot of jollof is ever quite the same as another, so diverse are the ingredients that can go into the broth along with spices, onions and tomatoes. Out of chicken? Don’t worry: Pork, fish and veggies all work great in an authentic jollof. And for a real Nigerian feel, cook it over a live fire for a smoky

version known as Party Rice. The crust that forms on the bottom of the rice means you did it right! Since jollof is such a West African staple, it’s not surprising to learn that this dish knows no boundaries: Serve it at an everyday meal or dress it up with seafood for a celebration. And if you are celebrating at an African restaurant near you, consider sampling jollof. It’s often served with fried plantains and coleslaw. CAAKRI We saved the best for last—dessert! Leave the chocolate-covered cheesecake for another time; to get the full African experience, try Caakri, a dish made from fermented milk and grain and sweetened to taste. You might liken it to rice pudding, but the texture is different and the taste slightly tangy. (It contains sour cream.) The name Caakri (aka Tiakri, Chakery and several others) refers to the grain used to make this popular dessert or snack. While tradition called for common African grains like maize, black-eyed peas or millet, today’s pudding typically uses couscous prepared from wheat semolina. This pudding wasn’t always on the dessert menu. In fact, Caakri is related to a dish once served as the main meal, but that all changed with the availability of sweeteners. Today, you can sweeten your Caakri or not, depending on preference. Serve without sugar for a yogurt taste, reflecting one of its key ingredients; or with sweetener, raisins or pineapple, for a true dessert. Serve chilled for best results. So, if you are ready to take your palate-pleasing to new levels, try a taste of West Africa!

For your food tour of West Africa, sample (clockwise, from top left) Senegalese chicken yassa, peanut soup, jollof rice and caakri. No need to travel—this cuisine is a hot new American trend.

HAMILTON

PEANUT SOUP This staple of the West African diet brings together a very unlikely combo from an American standpoint— tomatoes and peanuts (or ground nuts)—for a sweet and spicy sensation you’ll wish you had discovered sooner. Although there are many variations of this soup or stew, at its core are simple, familiar ingredients: nuts and sometimes meat and veggies. Ginger, herbs, garlic, Tabasco hot sauce and sweet potatoes are all used to enhance this African favorite— a sure way to provide comfort, as well as nourishment, on a rainy day. The perfect accompaniment for peanut soup is rice, plantains, potatoes and vegetables,

but in Ghana, you might bring on the fufu. Yes, that’s fufu—the name for any hot starch cooked over heat and formed into a rich paste. There’s nothing like this pounded starch, often made from fermented cassava, to make sure we get every last drop of our peanut soup. Most Africans eat fufu every day, from infancy through their senior years, and it comes in many varieties.

What’s in a number? In Judaism, there’s a belief that 18 is lucky, while the same number is associated with abundance and wealth in Chinese folklore. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a hold of and sip one (or all) of these under-the-radar spirits. They might not result in riches, but we know you’ll treasure their tastes.

The story behind this rum’s name is almost as rich as the liquor itself. “Kirk and Sweeney” was the name of a wooden schooner used to smuggle rum from the Caribbean to the United States during Prohibition. Luckily, connoisseurs today don’t have to wait as long for a taste of the copper-colored rum. The liquor is crafted from raw sugarcane and exudes the aroma of dried fruits, hints of honey and warm vanilla.

After traditional aging in oak casks and additional aging in port barrels, just 800 bottles are available of this single cask Gelas Bas-Armagnac. In the mouth, this brandy expresses notes of crystallized clementine, candied apple and lemon, and a hint of smooth blackberry cream. The distinct aromas of caramel, toasted oak and vanilla create a pleasant experience on the nose.

They grow up so fast! And this Scotch whisky is especially mature for its age, thanks to the watchful eyes and patience of Glenfiddich’s master distillers. They individually number each bottle and supervise the aging to ensure proper maturation. From its inception to formative years, Glenfiddich whisky undergoes an intense marrying period so its fruity and rich oak flavors can intertwine and fully develop.

This straight rye whiskey is the oldest release of Lock Stock & Barrel to date—making it quite the coveted craft liquor. It is a robust cut whiskey, having been unfiltered after its distillation. The aging process tames its spicy overtones and brings out hints of candied ginger, vanilla and cherry. And despite its high proof, this rye is smooth enough to be enjoyed without ice.

Fuenteseca Reserva tequila was aged for six years in Atotonilco El Alto before spending 12 years aging in El Chapingo. It is free of the artificial coloring and flavors now found in some añejo tequilas on the market. The natural process allows the liquor to develop its authentic gold coloring, creamy vanilla taste and palate-pleasing cedar and sandalwood undertones.

ALWAYS IN STYLE, THESE CLASSIC JEWELS ADD A TOUCH OF SIMPLE, LUSTROUS ELEGANCE. By Rita Guarna Whatever oyster first dreamed of pearls had no idea the gems would shine for millennia. Pearls pop up in the Bible and the Koran; were prized by the ancient cultures of Egypt, India and China; and were a big reason—so the historian Suetonius tells us—that Julius Caesar invaded Britain. The costly gem symbolized purity, but also wealth, as usually only royalty or nobility could afford pearls. With the advent of cultured pearls in the early 1900s, that changed. Since famous French fashion designer Coco Chanel incorporated them into mainstream fashion almost a century ago, pearls have become the accessory that makes a look—and never gets old. Today, a new generation of celebrities and tastemakers is appropriating this timeless gem, giving pearls modern meaning and edge. Far from Park Avenue, fashionable women of all ages

are throwing on strands of pearls with everything from black lace cocktail dresses to blue jeans and white T-shirts. From the concert stage to the red carpet, British singer Rita Ora has used a smattering of differentsized pearls to create youthful yet ethereal hair accessories. Singer-songwriter Rihanna rocks pearls with sexy multi-strand collars and layers upon layers of matinee-length strands. Actresses Emma Stone and Lupita Nyong’o have added luster beyond their accessories, wearing pearlcovered gowns for black-tie events. Actress Jessica Alba has been photographed many times wearing pearl earrings. From decidedly modern black pearl-drop earrings to a pair of hanging gold chains punctuated with small luminescent pearls to front-and-back bauble pearl studs, Alba proves that pearl earrings

transition seamlessly from day to night. Whether you prefer the iconic five-strand pearl necklace Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Kate Middleton’s funky white pearl lariat, there are many trendy ways to wear pearls now. For a preppy look, headbands, hair clips and other hair accessories are getting the spotlight. For a more avant-garde approach, pearls are being used as accents in art-inspired sculptural earrings. The unique shapes and textures of baroque pearls make the perfect accessories for a free-spirited boho style. For traditionalists looking for a twist on a classic, the Gucci loafer received an update with pearl-studded heels. But perhaps the final word on pearls came, with fitting simplicity, a half-century ago from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. “Pearls,” she said, “are always appropriate.”

THE GEM OF QUEENS Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but pearls are a woman’s timeless companion. Long known as “the queen of gems” because of their popularity with royalty (among the few who could afford them), pearls have gone mainstream without losing their elegance. Today’s celebrities are making sophisticated and sexy fashion statements with them. From Scarlett Johansson’s luxurious multi-strand, layered look to Jennifer Lawrence’s chic front-and-back black pearl-stud earrings, young fashionistas are donning this classic gem with bold, modern style.
