dear friends As we go to press with the latest issue of ACCENT magazine, spring is upon us and with it comes many enhancements to both our Princeton and Palm Beach boutiques. It seems hard to believe, but this year commemorates the 30th anniversary of The Gardens Mall opening in Palm Beach Gardens. My father Martin walked the empty land at the top of what was the “end” of the Route 95 corridor at the time with Mr. Sid Forbes, and they agreed that a state-of-the-art shopping center was long overdue in North County. Hamilton will be embarking on a refresh of our store in 2019, including designated spaces for brands such as Cartier, Rolex and Patek Philippe, as well as presentations of new Hamilton and designer collections. As one of the few remaining original tenants of The Gardens, this renovation project will mark the fifth for our location. Meanwhile, our Princeton flagship location is in the midst of a multi-year renovation, collaborating with architectural firm CallisonRTKL in New York and in partnership with Princeton-based JZA+D. The updated design will encompass a completely new encounter for our Hamilton guests and visitors to Princeton. A new “watch lounge,” a dedicated designer jewelry salon, a wedding band and engagement ring room and a renovated presence on our Witherspoon Street façade are just some of the enhancements we are looking forward to. In addition, behind-the-scenes expansions of our jewelry workshop as well as an expansion of our state-of-the-art timepiece service center are taking place as well.

We look forward to seeing you soon,

Hank Siegel, President Follow on Instagram @HAMILTONCEO

Needless to say, we are excited about these improvements that will continue to develop a memorable experience for every guest, with every visit. I hope you will drop by to say hello and see the ever-evolving Hamilton.

LUXURY

b y Ta n y a D u k e s

FOR THE RISING GENERATION OF YOUNG ROYALS, JEWELRY IS A CONNECTION TO THE PAST AND A LEGACY FOR THE FUTURE.

The British Empire is no more, but many of the spectacular jewels from its height (and long before) remain. More than two million people visit the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London each year. There they find regalia that includes pieces dating from between the 12th and 20th centuries—a gilt coronation spoon, scepters and crowns bearing some of the world’s largest diamonds and ruby studded coronation rings. Queen Elizabeth owns

a breathtaking jewelry collection that inspires fascination in its own right. She and the rest of the royal family are custodians of jewels that are a tangible representation of Britain’s history and culture. Each successive generation has the responsibility to share that legacy and bring new vitality to it too. In a moment when fame is accessible to anyone with an Instagram account, the royals have a special allure. Shane Clark, a regular contributor to Brides magazine, sees their impact as distinct from celebrities or newly minted influencers. Rather than fleeting trends, royalty “sets the bar for iconic style,” she says. “They’re not chasing disposable fads. There’s a strong draw to that quality.”

HAMILTON

In a monarchy, jewelry is never an afterthought. For centuries royals have used their precious baubles as important signifiers of identity. “Historically, jewels were a form of power. They conferred prestige and status and even provided ready cash for the treasury or a wedding,” says art and jewelry historian Jan Krulick-Belin. What’s more, it’s almost impossible to picture illustrious monarchs without their signature jewels. (Think of it as an early form of branding.) In portraiture Queen Elizabeth I is ever resplendent in layers of pearls that include hair ornaments, necklaces, earrings and gems sewn into her clothing—“The pearl symbolized purity and chastity, which she thought was appropriate to her status as The Virgin Queen,” explains Krulick-Belin. After the death of her beloved Prince Albert, Queen Victoria often was depicted in a diminutive diamond crown she thought more suitable to her eternal mourning than the grand Imperial State Crown with its multicolored jewels. And present-day Queen Elizabeth II wears one of her countless brooches daily.

Prince William and Kate Middleton and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had the most anticipated, scrutinized and influential weddings of the last decade (with an honorable mention for the October nuptials of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank). Their weddings have had a marked impact on prevailing contemporary wedding style, starting with the rings that first signaled their engaged status, according to Clark. When Prince William and Kate Middleton made the official announcement that they were to marry, they revealed that Middleton would wear the same Ceylon sapphire and diamond cluster engagement ring that once belonged to Princess Diana. The sentimental gesture forever connects the couple to the princess and sustains her memory with a highly visible symbol. And, on the style front, colored gemstones immediately reemerged as a desirable option for couples who once had thought of diamonds as the default position for their wedding jewelry. The same ring has had a significant impact twice—when Diana and Charles were engaged in 1981, replicas of the famous sapphire instantly proliferated. Princess Eugenie continued the royal association with colored stones when she chose a rare pink padparadscha sapphire for her engagement ring. “Both Kate and Eugenie opened lots of eyes to the possibility of wearing color in engagement rings,” says Clark. “And more than that, they’ve set a standard for choosing jewelry that reflects their personal style.” It could be that Heidi Klum and Katy Perry took notice and share a similar sensibility? Both have been spotted recently in colorful gemstone engagement rings that bear a striking resemblance to the ones worn by the two duchesses. Meanwhile, three-stone engagement rings have seen a spike in interest thanks to Meghan Markle. She wears one with a cushion-cut center diamond flanked by two round diamonds. Prince Harry explained to the BBC that he designed his fiancée’s engagement ring with a central diamond “sourced from Botswana,” a place the couple visited several times during their courtship, while “the little diamonds on either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection, to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.” The thoughtful elements that compose the ring emphasize the couple’s unique history and honor the prince’s late mother. According to Clark, Prince Harry’s approach has bolstered interest in creating customized jewelry with ethically sourced materials. “More than ever, people respond to the story behind a piece of jewelry and want to personalize their jewels. There’s a lot more emphasis on the origins of stones and jewelry with a sense of heritage.”

If there’s a type of jewelery that connotes royalty more than virtually any other, it’s a tiara. Queen Elizabeth loaned tiaras from her personal collection to Kate (a Cartier halo tiara purchased by the Queen’s father in 1936), Meghan (a diamond bandeau that once belonged to Queen Mary) and her granddaughter Eugenie (an emerald and diamond Boucheron design from 1919) for their weddings. That none of the tiaras had been worn in public for decades before appearing on the recent brides is an indication of the depth and quality of the jewelry collection the queen has at her disposal. While most women don’t have a vault of diamond headgear at the ready, the style cue still has had an impact. “Hair ornaments of all kinds are getting more attention because of the royals,” says Clark. “Even smaller options like jeweled clips and combs pull together a wedding look and can be passed down as heirlooms.” When they’re in less formal mode, the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex deploy their jewelry in a way that’s a balance between the past and the present, duty and personal preference. For high profile appearances Kate wears items with a family connection, like the South Sea pearl and diamond earrings she wore to the BAFTAs this year; they were a favorite of Princess Diana. And while on a royal tour of Canada, she acknowledged her host country by wearing a diamond maple leaf brooch that once belonged to the Queen Mother. The future queen also has a collection of personal jewelry in semiprecious stones and gold that she relies on for occasions from casual outings to christenings.

HAMILTON

Meghan is said to be a modernizing presence in the British royal family, and her choices embrace classic items—diamond studs, dainty pendant earrings—along with directional jewelry looks that typically aren’t associated with regal wear. She dressed in an armful of bohemian gold bangles to present her wedding dress designer, Givenchy’s Clare Waight Keller, with a Fashion Award. Diamond ear jackets are a contemporary style that’s a favorite of the new American royal. And Hello! magazine credits her with wearing a “daring fashion item no other royal has stepped out in, EVER.” The newsworthy piece was an ear climber with a fringe of diamond accents (pictured above). It’s a small thing, but in the tradition-bound world of the British royals, it’s a telling statement spoken in gold and jewels.

DOUBLE BROOK FARM, CREATED IN 2004 BY ROBIN AND JON MCCONAUGHY AND LOCATED IN HOPEWELL, NJ, IS THE EVOLUTION OF A THOUGHTFUL APPROACH TO LOCAL FARMING AND FOOD PRODUCTION.

The farm was started primarily to raise healthy animals for personal consumption and has become a full-fledged livestock operation supporting both a retail store, a seasonal shake shack and a fine dining restaurant. In March 2015, after a five-year vetting and audit process, the farm became the first in New Jersey, and just the second in the United States, to open a USDA-certified, on-farm slaughterhouse that can handle all livestock. A fundamental component of the McConaughys’ vision always has been the humane treatment of the animals throughout their life on the farm, and that mindset has become integral to a sustainable business and way of life for the region.

Double Brook Farm Hopewell, NJ doublebrookfarm.com

What began as a dream to connect a family to the land has developed into an enterprise that offers a distinctive approach to how a community enjoys great food...authentically and deliciously.

The ultimate goal is a farm that uses energy from the sun or the earth, has zero outside inputs, no external animal feed or fertilizers and a very limited carbon footprint. Currently, Double Brook is raising sheep, pigs, turkeys, goats, ducks and chickens for both meat and eggs, and a small herd of cattle. The rest of the cattle is raised on pasture by George Lake of Thistle Creek Farms in Tyrone, PA.

4/3/19 3:13 PM

Brick Farm Market was created to be the dedicated outlet for Double Brook Farm while enabling the founders to interact with customers and share with them how the food they are buying is grown, raised or made. When the Malek Chevrolet building—a beautiful 1930s brick auto repair shop in Hopewell—became available in 2010, the McConaughys knew they found the perfect location to be the community-oriented retail outpost for their products. The Market reflects an ongoing dedication to informed choices and best practices. From partnering with like-minded local vendors for produce, grocery and personal care items and limiting fossil fuel needs with clean energy to preparing recipes with choice ingredients and offering the customer ideas on cooking “snout to tail,” Brick Farm Market takes some of the guesswork out of nutritious, local, sustainable shopping. BRICKFARMMARKET.COM

The culmination of this multi-faceted food and farming venture is best exemplified in the Brick Farm Tavern, the region’s finest and most authentic pasture-to-table restaurant. Set in a circa 1800s farmhouse with a brick façade, intimate dining rooms and an elegant wine cellar for larger parties or private dining, the bustling Tavern has become an iconic symbol of an honest dining experience that never compromises faithfully fresh food served in a warm and inviting setting. Brick Farm Tavern is the fulfillment of a vision for guests to have a unique dining experience using the freshest products the region has to offer in a rustic but refined setting. You don’t need a special occasion to enjoy delicious local food offered with innovation and quality in a picturesque background, surrounded by nature and farmland. Private events will be even more memorable when enjoyed at the Tavern and managed by a culinary and service team that delivers energy and passion to your occasion. BRICKFARMTAVERN.COM

Opened in 2017, Red Barn Milk Co. offers shakes, burgers, fries, chocolates and rotating specials that elevate the seasonal shake shack experience to a new level. A dedicated team has created traditional and soft serve ice cream using products from our local dairy farmers. While most milk purchased from grocery stores is co-mingled with hundreds of other dairy farms, Red Barn uses only hormone-free and antibiotic-free milk from a single source and cream from reputable area dairies. Whether you order our Madagascar vanilla or blueberry cheesecake ice cream, the owners of the Red Barn Milk Co. can tell you exactly where the ingredients in your ice cream came from. The ice cream isn’t the only locally produced item on the menu. The hamburgers, bratwurst, hot dogs and baked goods all come fresh from the Brick Farm Market, just five miles down the road. The marriage of knowing exactly where your food comes from coupled with pure flavor is a duo that’s sure to please all palates.

ART

Considered a trailblazer who ushered in a movement of storytelling in the genre of fashion photography, Norman Parkinson worked outside the box. He took female models away from the static poses and outside well-controlled studios common in pre-war photography and into the real world. His shoots often took place in exotic, glamorous locations where his subjects interacted with the environment. In a career that spanned from 1931 until his death in 1990—while shooting on location in Singapore—Parkinson’s work reflected our evolving society.

No woman is ever going to turn down a piece of jewelry on Mother’s Day, that’s just a fact. But gift-givers need to keep in mind the wearer’s personal style before making a purchase. GIFT GUIDE

ROBERTO COIN Why not give Mom a piece of jewelry from the City of Gold itself? Roberto Coin’s eponymous brand was born in 1977 in Vicenza, Italy’s capital of gold. Soon after its official inception in 1996, Roberto Coin became world-renowned and celebrity-adored, and it’s easy to see why—each piece is unique and handcrafted in 18K gold, some with gems and some without. Every piece in Roberto Coin’s collections also features his signature: a tiny ruby hidden inside that is the designer’s gift to his customers. Ruby is a “…romantic way to wish the best to all the people wearing my pieces,” Coin has said. The ruby also represents health, happiness and long life, and no Mom can say no to all that.

MIKIMOTO If it’s a strand of pearls Mom is hoping for, Mikimoto is the obvious choice. The namesake behind the brand is Kokichi Mikimoto, who revolutionized the pearl industry when he cultured the first pearl and patented the process in the early 1900s. And now, more than a century later, Mikimoto is still refashioning how women wear pearl necklaces by introducing versatile new designs, innovative clasps and unique styles, from multi-layered strands to lariats laced with diamonds. The collections, which also include earrings, bracelets, brooches and rings, are timeless yet contemporary, classic yet cutting-edge—but universally coveted and stunning. A tangible spark and energy currently fill the Roebling Wire Works Building to the brim, where nothing shines brighter than watching young people believing in themselves. The famous American showman P.T. Barnum once said, “The noblest art is that of making others happy.” Although Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus hung up its top hat for the last time in 2017, Barnum’s joyful sentiment is alive and well in central New Jersey, thanks to the Trenton Circus Squad. Bringing joy and inspiration to the greater Princeton community with circus arts, TCS empowers underserved teens and youth to find great success—a remarkable feat in an age in which video games and cellphone screens compete to provide childhood wonder.

TRENTON_CIRCUS_SQUAD_SP19_final.indd 52

Pairing inner-city youth with their peers from more affluent suburbs, TCS uses circus arts to teach cooperation and build community, with the dual goals of bridging the divide between poverty and privilege, and encouraging the important lessons of teamwork, self-esteem and trust. Here, Trenton-area youths ages 12 to 18 become both students and teachers. After mastering skills including juggling, slapstick, unicycling and aerial work, students collaborate to put on performances—and then share those skills with younger children ages 6 to 11—through workshops they run after the show. Who loves the show more: the performers or the audience? It’s hard to tell. “I love watching the audience when I’m performing. It’s the best feeling to complete a trick and be able to see the little kids you are inspiring,” says Julia Troilo, a Princeton High School student, four-summer veteran of the Squad and lover of the challenging Chinese Pole.

4/3/19 3:14 PM

“Everyone at TCS is unique and very different, but we’ve become a family over time. I wouldn’t trade this for the earth.” —Shekinah Williams

Newer Squad member Shekinah Williams also is embracing the positive vibe. “I love to make people smile and give hope while they are watching me perform.” A sophomore at Trenton Central High School Visual and Performing Arts, and an avid enthusiast of aerial work and juggling, Williams loves how the audience gives right back to the performers: “I’ll never forget my first performance. At the very end of the act, I tripped over my own foot and fell on my face. I just started laughing but everybody clapped for me and supported me.” TCS co-founder Zoe Brookes marvels at the wonderful two-way connection between performers and audience, older children and younger. “The kids in the program really become role models, and the kids in the audience get to try something they’ve seen in the show, that they didn’t imagine they could do,” she says. “They connect with an older child who’s more skilled, who can then show them how to learn that skill.” Brookes and Tom von Oehsen, both long-time veterans of youth circus programs, are the indefatigable creative team behind TCS, which they co-founded in 2014. The executive director since the organization’s inception, Brookes now has stepped down to resume her consulting practice, though she remains very involved as a volunteer for TCS’s governing committees. She ends her tenure with a bang, having recently been honored by the YWCA of Princeton at its 2019 Tribute to Women.

Von Oehsen has now taken the reins as executive director, drawing upon his training as a clown in the 1980s with Barnum & Bailey where he learned that “circus arts can be a great equalizer to the challenges of everyday life.” He carries on the tradition of big-top dreams with the support of Bradd M. Jackson, TCS’s dynamic director of operations. Von Oehsen talks about the Squad with pride, and rightfully so. “How often do you see a service program where teenagers want to continue to be involved?” he says. “Our Squad experiences civic engagement and continues showing up and giving back to their communities every day.”

TRENTON_CIRCUS_SQUAD_SP19_final.indd 53

As is true for the art of circus performing, collaboration is part of the “business” of TCS’s nonprofit status as well. TCS also works with youth-serving organizations such as Homefront, Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, Urban Promise and others to spread the joy of circus across the city. Fundraising is always on the docket, as the majority of youth programs are provided free of charge. The cost for each child to participate is about $600 per session. Tax-deductible donations support the underlying costs of the program, making the experience available to all youths, regardless of their ability to pay. Donations continue to allow for democratic program access, and though TCS has developed strong partnerships with Princeton-based Borden Perlman Insurance, JaZams, Bank of Princeton, Callaway Henderson Sotheby’s International Realty, plus organizations in more far-reaching areas, needs are always ongoing. Inspiring youth to take big leaps in life. “Our Squad experiences civic engagement, and continues showing up and giving back to their communities every day.” —Tom von Oehsen

“We have also partnered with many amazing Trenton programs and organizations that are invested in community building and social justice,” says von Oehsen, citing the commitment of the city and county to the safety and well-being of the community and the Squad. The future is bright for TCS. This summer, the Squad will hit the road, traveling to Chicago at the invitation of CircEsteem, a circus arts organization with similar community goals to their own.

T HE WOR K SHOPS For aspiring performers ages 6 to 11, workshops take place after school Monday through Friday, and on Fridays during the summer. Over the course of eight weeks, children learn circus skills, such as stilt walking, trapeze, juggling, acrobatics and slapstick from Squad members and staff.

T H E SQUA D Squad members ages 12 to 18 practice one to five times a week from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Members attend regular 12-week sessions, working with others and giving back to their community through the use of circus arts. Experienced Squad members who commit to learning a challenging set of circus- and team-related skills have the chance to join the ambassador group, the Road Squad.

“We’ll collaborate with four other social circuses to create a performance which they will then perform all over the City of Chicago,” says von Oehsen. Home state New Jersey will find the Squad performing the week of July 4th under the Big Top at the Camden Waterfront, and then it’s on to a one-week residency, bringing the circus to the children of Asbury Park and Red Bank. The road trip will culminate in August with the Squad heading to San Diego to attend the 2019 American Youth Circus Organization Festival. If you’ve been lucky enough to witness a TCS spectacle first hand, the smiling faces tell you the Squad is a fun, friendly bunch, but you’ll see it’s much more than that. “The Squad is made up of people who didn’t know each other at all, but now we are like a family,” says Troilo. “I’ve learned so much from other Squad members: trust, respect, communication, and of course, teamwork—skills we practice every day.” Even the newest members recognize the program’s warm and very special nature. “Everyone at TCS is unique and very different, but we’ve become a family over time. Everyone is welcome to the Squad,” says Williams. “I wouldn’t trade this for the earth.” HAMILTON 55

Palm Beach society is known for its polished soirées, where culture and couture typically mix in refined environs. But, on at least one night each year, 25 local noteworthy celebrities, philanthropists and businessmen (cheered on by more than 250 attendees) get a little wild—at least when it comes to their fashion choice for the evening.

The WILD Pants Party, which supports The Arc of Palm Beach County, started in 2011 as a kickoff cocktail party for the organization’s annual golf tournament. In order to differentiate themselves from the myriad local charitable golf events, organizers had the idea to ask a handful of men if they would be willing to compete in an ugly pants contest in a humorous nod to outlandish golf fashion.

HOW ONE PALM BEACH CHARITY USED ITS WILD NIGHT TO LAUNCH A CONVERSATION-CHANGING CAMPAIGN.

ARC_FINAL.indd 58

4/3/19 3:15 PM

“Our goal for this year is to change the conversation about how people see each other.” The Arc has a long history of changing things, most specifically the opportunities afforded to those with intellectual disabilities. The organization was born over 60 years ago as institutions were closing and parents of those with disabilities were looking for services to help support their children.

THAT IDEA, AS IT TURNED OUT, WAS BRILLIANT. THE WILD PANTS PARTY TOOK ON A LIFE OF ITS OWN, BECOMING A STANDALONE EVENT HELD AT THE GARDENS MALL THAT HAS GROWN IN BOTH ITS POPULARITY AS WELL AS THE PRESTIGE ASSOCIATED WITH WINNING THE COMPETITION. In the months leading up to the party, participants are tasked with raising money, which is used to support The Arc’s 15 different programs that serve children and adults with developmental disabilities. The individual who raises the most funds is crowned King of WILD Pants, a title that comes with significant bragging rights and an outlandish WWE-inspired championship belt.

Today, The Arc assists individuals from birth all the way through advanced age with a wide array of programs that serve more than 2,800 families in the Palm Beach area. In addition to developmental and employment services, four group homes provide full-time care for 31 individuals and over 160 local families receive respite services. With the Acceptance campaign, however, McCarten and her team believe they can extend The Arc’s impact to a more global level. “Our goal for this year is to change the conversation about how people see each other,” McCarten says. (continued)

Competition is stiff, with participants amassing fan clubs to cheer them on and pandering to the audience with entertaining runway walks and dance moves, as well as items given out to the crowd. Two-time winner Palm Beach menswear designer Wyatt Koch met up with the 2019 victor, Richard Gaff, just weeks after this year’s event (both armed with their championship belts) to start strategizing for next year. “People love the WILD Pants party because it is different from anything else they go to,” says Kimberly McCarten, president and CEO of The Arc of Palm Beach County. At the heart of the spirited festivities is a celebration of individualism, which made this year’s WILD Pants Party the perfect venue for unveiling The Arc’s newest initiative.

“This campaign is about everyone accepting themselves and people around them for the gifts and talents they have and seeing those abilities, rather than focusing on their disabilities,” says McCarten. “We believe that you could really change the world with just this one word.”

HAMILTON

As the event was drawing to a close, the models came out together one final time. Each of them had changed into a shirt that simply read “Acceptance.” More than merely a word, the concept of acceptance has become the foundation for The Arc’s new public service campaign that embraces not only the fundamentals of the organization, but also an issue at the forefront of national conversation.

CAUSE AND EFFECT:

WITH THAT AMBITIOUS GOAL IN MIND, THE QUESTION BECAME: HOW COULD THE ARC START THE DIALOGUE? They decided to let jewelry do it for them. The team reached out to Hamilton Jewelers, both due to the company’s tradition of sophistication as well as its location in The Gardens Mall, home to their beloved WILD Pants Party. Working with a Hamilton designer, the team created an elegant line of necklaces and tie clips that feature the word “acceptance” imprinted on a gold or silver bar. These are pieces destined to spark conversation. “Hamilton was honored to create the jewelry for the Acceptance campaign,” Hamilton company vice president Donna Bouchard says. “It’s such an important cause, and the jewelry helps to raise awareness and visibility.” The pieces, which initially will be sold on The Arc’s website (arcpbc.org) and at their signature fundraising events throughout the year, are an impactful first step in The Arc having a voice that resonates with a wider audience.

With 60+ years of experience paying it forward in the local community, The Arc is poised to fulfill its newest promise to change the global conversation about acceptance. They are, after all, experts in proving how individuals can surpass expectations when given the chance.

At Otis, however, they work together as a group of eight at the company’s office, stuffing all of the billing envelopes. Rather than getting paid by the piece, each individual receives an hourly wage, so they can work at their own pace. The team is tasked with meeting a shared goal, without concern as to individual contribution level. Jackie works 20 hours a week in a job she had to interview with four different people to earn. Upon receiving the job, McCarten, whose entire team had worked with Jackie to prepare her for the interviews, asked Jackie what this meant to her. She shares Jackie’s response. “The biggest thing it means to me,” she replied, “is that when people ask me what I do, I don’t have to say I go to a program all day. I get to tell them I have a job.” “Most of us can’t wait to retire,” says McCarten. “The people we serve just want to be able to work and contribute to society. They want to get a paycheck and decide how to spend it. And they want to have the same conversation as everyone else.”

60

HAMILTON

“What we loved about this,” McCarten says, “is that it doesn’t just have to be about disabilities. It’s whatever acceptance means to you. It’s accepting yourself for who you are and paying that forward.”

For many of us, talking about our jobs is a requisite and, at times, an annoying part of making conversation at social events. For clients of The Arc, like Jackie, it’s a source of pride. Jackie is part of an enclave team of Arc clients that works for the Finance Department at Otis Elevator Company. The members of this team need additional assistance and supervision.

ESTATE PLANNING CAN BE DAUNTING, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF CURRENT AND ACCURATE APPRAISALS FOR YOUR FINE JEWELRY AND TIMEPIECES IS A CRITICAL PART OF THE PROCESS.

at your service THINGS TO KNOW: A jewelry appraisal can be done on any item of jewelry, regardless of the composition, style, or condition. The purpose of a jewelry appraisal is to assign a precise dollar value for an item, often for insurance purposes. An appraisal might also be necessary to settle an estate or other valuation procedures or also be used to verify an item’s true market value before making a purchase.

Market values change, so we recommend you have fine jewelry appraisals updated approximately every three years. The process should always include the following detail: · Each piece of jewelry is cleaned, weighed, measured and described in detail. · Gemstones are identified, graded, measured, and described in gemological and narrative detail.

· Photomicrographs (photos through the microscope) are available if needed for insurance claims, etc. · Your appraisal will explain the grading systems and any special terminology used.

Jewelry and watches may comprise a sizable portion of your personal assets, which makes knowing their value critical to any financial plan. Just like the other professionals on your financial planning team, it’s important to work with a qualified and accredited appraiser to ensure that this asset class is properly managed, and that the proper valuation method is applied. You may spend a lifetime building your collection and then your heirs often have no indication of what to do with it. Should the pieces be bequeathed? Should they be converted to cash? Should they be donated? When should these actions occur? Like any other asset, the proper dialogue with a professional is necessary to make sure the correct decisions are made.

62

· Colored gemstone certificates are provided for colored stones when appropriate.

Hamilton offers comprehensive appraisal services by Gemologists who are Graduates of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and members of the American Gem Society, (AGS) and National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA). Jewelry appraisals and laboratory reports are two important types of reports about your gemstones and jewelry, but they are not the same documents and should be provided separately for your items. Our appraisers are highly trained specialists in the areas of antique and estate jewelry, buying and evaluations, insurance replacements and customized appraisal services. Following a strict code of ethics governed by international organizations such as the Jewelers Vigilance Committee, Council for Responsible Jewelry Practices, and Jewelers of America, our associates are committed to promoting responsible business practices in a clear and accountable manner throughout the jewelry industry.

TAKE TO THE SKIES WITH THE ROLEX GMT-MASTER II AND SKY-DWELLER, TRUSTED WINGMEN TO THE ELITE WORLD TRAVELER. By Christen Fisher

ACC.HAM.ss19.rolextravel.indd 73

tennis legend Roger Federer, basketball great LeBron James and soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, the Sky-Dweller boasts dual timezone displays and an annual calendar. For the dual time-zone feature, local time is read using center hands and a reference time display in 24-hour format on a rotating off-center disc visible on the dial. The annual calendar, called Saros after the astronomical phenomenon relating to the eclipse cycle, displays the date at 3 o’clock and the month using 12 apertures around the circumference of the dial. For ease of use on the go, the Sky-Dweller is equipped with a Ring Command bezel that allows the wearer to select the watch’s different functions through an interface between the movement and the case. The bezel can be turned to one of three positions to select the function to be set: date, local time or reference time. The selected function then can be adjusted in either direction, forward or backward, using the winding crown, which has only one setting position. At first it was offered only in precious metals, but Rolex introduced two Rolesor versions of the 42mm watch in 2017. It is now available in solid Everose gold, Oystersteel with white gold and Oystersteel with yellow gold. Keeping track of the time, knowing where you’ve been, where you are and where you’re going—whether it’s back home, to the next meeting or to an undiscovered corner of the Earth—is a necessary “luxury” for the devoted traveler. If you find yourself spending much of your time navigating friendly or unfriendly skies, Rolex’s GMT-Master II and Sky-Dweller will help you keep an eye on the horizon and a foot on the ground.

HAMILTON 73

Whether your 2019 travel plans include “bleisure” trips (mixing business and leisure) with the family in tow, an epic solo adventure into an unexplored or hard-to-reach territory, or both, chances are you’re going to fly. You’ll be in the air, but not above caring what time it is. So know this: As the jet set takes flight more frequently than ever before, its wingman of choice continues to be Rolex. In 1959, when Pan American Airways made the first nonstop flight from New York to Moscow, Rolex was in the cockpit. The historic flight’s captain wore an Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master to aid him in navigation. Since its original launch in 1955, the GMT-Master has remained a true “tool watch,” its ever-evolving technical performance keeping pace with the rapid growth of intercontinental travel during the second half of the 20th century. In 1982, Rolex introduced a new movement that allowed the hour hand to be set independently. Models fitted with this optimized movement were named the GMT-Master II. In the past 60 years, a lot has changed: Pan Am no longer exists, and flights from New York to Moscow are a daily occurrence. Yet the GMT-Master II continues to evolve to meet the needs of elite world travelers, including celebrity devotees such as Brad Pitt, Ellen DeGeneres and Sylvester Stallone. At Baselworld 2018, Rolex introduced three new versions of the iconic GMT-Master II with a new movement, the caliber 3285. Available in Oystersteel, Oystersteel and Everose gold and solid Everose gold, the 40mm GMT-Master II is equipped with a bidirectional rotatable bezel and a 24-hour graduated two-color Cerachrom insert in red-and-blue ceramic, known to watch aficionados as the “Pepsi” bezel. The lugs and sides of its Oyster case have been redesigned and fitted on a five-link Jubilee bracelet. Designed to display the time in two different time zones simultaneously and waterproof to 100 meters, it is an ideal watch for crisscrossing the globe in style. Launched in 2012, GMT-Master II’s much younger sibling, the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller, is one of Rolex’s most complicated watches. A favorite among globe-trotting athletes like

A DEGENERES TIMEPIECE TRIO Comedian and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres seldom leaves home without a Rolex or Patek. Here are three standouts from her enviable collection:

OBSERVING CAREFULLY BOTH HER GUESTS AND THE TIME HELPS THIS TALK-SHOW HOST KEEP HER HUMOR SHARP BUT GENTLE. SHE’S A WATCHFUL COLLECTOR TOO. It’s about more than laughs—that’s the deal with comedian-turned-talk-show-host Ellen DeGeneres. Her generous, benign spirit is another key to her success, and her style of gentle self-mockery takes the sting out of her sendups of absurdity—hers, ours and the world’s. While some comics make us guffaw but inwardly recoil, DeGeneres is the one we want to hang out with in our daytime living rooms. Who else could have shattered barriers as she did by coming out on her sitcom back in the ’90s (both her character and the comedian herself) while leaving us laughing and liking her so darn much? While DeGeneres, now 60, wrestles with an exaggerated rep for being “nice,” she does achieve apparently effortless rapport with everyone who sits in the guest chair. That takes sensitivity. But each of us has an aggressive demon somewhere inside. Where’s hers? Maybe a clue is on her wrist. There seems to be nothing demure or stammeringly apologetic about DeGeneres’ acquisition of luxury watches. She collects. And no one doubts that her bank account is good for every tick on every dial. Oh, she’s casual enough, letting the luxury jewelry peek out beneath her left sleeve during episodes and appearances and interviews, but never actually showing it off. “I have both vintage and new models,” she remarked about a little Swiss brand called Rolex. She has, to name a wristful, the Rolex Submariner with a blue dial and ceramic bezel, the Rolex Yacht-Master Everose with an Oysterflex bracelet, the collectible Rolex Explorer II “Steve McQueen” 1655 and—her personal favorite— the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. DeGeneres, the wife

of actress Portia de Rossi, is photographed frequently wearing this classic design—she even wore one during her 2018 Netflix standup comedy special, ironically titled Relatable—and has at least seven of them. One of the comedian’s most valuable Daytonas is surely the $175K rare 1969 Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona Reference 6241, which she debuted on a 2018 episode of Jerry Seinfeld’s Netflix series, Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. (It’s OK to be jealous of both her watch and her famous pals, we promise.) But any true collection needs variation, which is why she has also splurged on a few Patek Philippes, including the Perpetual Calendar Chronograph 5271, the Nautilus Ref. 5711 and the Nautilus Annual Calendar Chronograph. She keeps her wry perspective, though. “For centuries we’ve checked the time by looking at our phones,” she tweeted after Apple announced the Apple Watch in 2014. “Having it on your wrist? Genius.” DeGeneres and her shows have amassed at least 30 Emmys, and she has voiced a fish in Pixar’s Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, written some books, hosted the Grammys, the Oscars and the Emmys, made Spectrum commercials and launched her own production company, record label, lifestyle brand and a series on HGTV. She was a spokesmodel for CoverGirl and even served as a judge on a season of American Idol. Most important, though, DeGeneres has championed generosity and kindness throughout her career, ending each show by saying, “Be kind to one another.” If she’s as kind and generous as all that, couldn’t we borrow just one watch?

DeGeneres wore this Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 5204 on a 2018 episode of her talk show. And she’ll never forget the date or time with this baby, as its functions show hours, minutes, seconds, day, date, month, moon phase, a leap year indicator and a perpetual calendar. Its price tag? Over $275K.

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40 is one of the comedian’s go-tos, with its elegant platinum smooth bezel and glacier blue patterned dial.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Everose was introduced in 2015 and features the brand’s Oysterflex bracelet, which allows for increased comfort and mobility. DeGeneres wore this during an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.

Today’s world travelers need to see the time in different time zones at a glance. World Time watches meet that need with the ultimate in mechanical ingenuity and aesthetic beauty. Prior to the mid-19th century, time was a local matter. Towns and cities around the world relied solely on the relative position of the sun to determine the time of day, which would be displayed on a centrally located clock, perhaps on a church steeple, in the town square or in a jeweler’s window. No national or international conventions defined how time should be measured, when a day began and ended, or even the actual length of an hour. While astronomers in Greenwich, England, had established mean time (time measured by a pendulum clock) back in the 1670s, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was of no practical use, except to sailors who used it to calculate their position at sea on transoceanic journeys. For the average citizen both in the U.S. and abroad, longdistance travel and communication were so painstakingly slow that standardized time was irrelevant. There was no such thing as a frequent traveler. Then came the railroads. As railroad tracks began to crisscross entire countries and continents, transporting people, communications and goods at speeds heretofore unimagined, the need for an international time standard became imperative. In 1876, Sir Sandford Fleming, chief

FACE TIME No performer wishes to be outshone by the timepieces he owns. So it’s a mark of confidence on superstar Robert Downey Jr.’s part that he’s willing to let us see how he keeps time. Here are three of his standout watches: At 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War premiere, Downey wore the $605K Greubel Forsey GMT Tourbillon, which boasts a power reserve indicator and a spinning titanium globe that rotates once every 24 hours.

Among the standouts were his “best watch,” a Jaeger-LeCoultre AMVOX3 Tourbillon GMT worth a cool $125K that he wore in Iron Man 2. He’s also the proud owner of a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner, a vintage Baume & Mercier he got from his grandfather and a Bell & Ross Titanium orange, a gift from Ben Stiller after they wrapped filming on 2008’s Tropic Thunder. Then there’s the pièce de résistance, the Patek Philippe Nautilus Moonphase Steel. “My Mrs. got me this watch,” he boasted of Susan Downey, his wife of 14 years and the mother of two of his three kids. “I’d say this is easily the most glamorous watch a man can have.” Well, it’s at least tied for “most glamorous” with the Urwerk UR-110 RG, which the actor wore in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. He personally requested the loan of that piece from the independent watch brand for his Tony Stark to wear in the film. It’s got 18K rose gold and black titanium with bright yellow numbers and detailing—yes, to match Iron Man’s suit. The Urwerk sold at a 2018 auction for $150K, but the actor won’t miss it too much; he had a separate one made for his personal collection.

Actor Robert Downey Jr. is probably best known these days as the dude under Iron Man’s suit in the films in Marvel’s Avengers franchise. He was also known to tabloid readers, years ago, for a bumpy personal life. But make room in your mind for one more fact about Downey: The man has a collection of watches that testifies to impeccable taste and discernment. That’s not something every star could easily match— not even every fellow performer on Forbes’ “highest-paid actors” list, where Downey has appeared repeatedly. But he seems comfortable with the fact that his possessions are revealing. “You can learn a lot about a man,” Downey has said, “if he opens up his jewelry box.” From his work we know he’s a man of impeccable talent too. Born in Manhattan to an actress mother and film director father, Downey began acting at the age of 5. He became a prominent member of the Brat Pack in the ’80s and had major roles in the 1992 film Chaplin and on the TV show Ally McBeal. However, his success in those early days was clouded by trouble with drugs, arrests and stints in rehab. By 2008, a finally sober Downey landed the role of a lifetime as Iron Man, a character he’s since depicted in leading roles, as a member of an ensemble cast and in cameos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s films. And, oh yeah, the superhero franchise is also what’s responsible for his

racing with rolex Rolex has linked its fame with the word “Daytona” over the years, and that’s no accident. The Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona is perhaps the Swiss brand’s most iconic watch, adored and admired by celebrities and less-known collectors alike. The timepiece was created with racing and speed in mind, and it has come to be regarded as one of the world’s most reliable watches due to its roots with speed racing in Daytona Beach, Florida. How? In 1935, after breaking a speed record of 276 miles per hour in his car Bluebird V at Daytona Beach, Sir Malcolm Campbell notified Rolex that the watch he wore during that race was still running. The fact that this timepiece withstood speeds and temperatures not typically experienced by owners was a testament to its craftsmanship. From there, Rolex’s relationship with racing grew steadily and, in 1963, the company launched a new-generation chronograph, the Cosmograph, dedicated to race-car drivers. This watch has evolved over the years to become a legend, a cherished trophy for this race, a tribute to the winning driver’s skill and a must-have for a collector’s vault, eventually becoming known by the prestigious name Daytona. In 1992, Rolex formalized their long-standing association with

Daytona and Daytona International Speedway by becoming the official timepiece and title sponsor of the epic 24-hour endurance race held annually in January. In 2001, the brand became the official partner and the official timepiece of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Rolex is also the timekeeper for Formula 1 Racing and started its sixth season with F1 when its Grand Prix season began in March. Meanwhile, three-time FIA Formula 1 Drivers’ World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart has been a Rolex Testimonee since 1968. Rolex is hardly adorning racers’ wrists with the same watches season after season. In 2009, the watchmaker intorduced the Everose Daytona made with the brand’s exclusive 18K pink gold. It has calibre 4130 and the central sweep seconds hand allows an accurate reading of 1/8 second. As with all models, its Oyster case is nearly scratchresistant and waterproof to a depth of 100 meters. The diameter of the timepiece is 40mm and the bracelet features the Rolex-patented Easylink rapid extension system, which allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by up to 5mm. In 2016, the watchmaker released the Cosmograph Daytona with a Cerachrom steel bezel. Gentlemen, start your engines.

PORSCHE ELECTRIFIES THE GREEN VEHICLE MARKET WITH ITS FIRST ELECTRIC SPORTS SEDAN. By Darius Amos

Careful what you wish for—right, Elon Musk? The Tesla chief took the auto world by storm when he rolled out his line of luxury electric cars, but little did he know his call for the globe’s other leading automakers to manufacture competitive “green” vehicles would be met head-on by Porsche. The German company, with a nearly 90-year history of producing high-end sports cars, has more than stepped up to Musk’s challenge. It is launching a new high-performance sports sedan, the Taycan (pronounced TIE-con), that will stand toe-to-toe with Tesla’s iconic Model S. The Taycan—a Eurasian word that translates loosely to “lively young horse”—is Porsche’s first all-electric vehicle. With a starting price in the $90,000-to-$100,000 range, it aims to become the leader in a market that’s been ruled by Tesla. So what makes this colt run? For starters, it boasts two electric motors that generate a whopping 600 horsepower, which Porsche says muscles 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds. Not bad considering Porsche’s legendary 911 Turbo S does that sprint in roughly 2.5 seconds. Early track results show that the

Taycan has an electric range of about 310 miles. The car’s power source is an 800-volt supercharger battery—plug in the car for just 15 minutes and it will have enough juice to travel 248 miles, or New York to Boston, without stopping. The Porsche power on the Taycan is tamed by all-wheel drive traction, though a rear-wheel drive version is an anticipated option for the future. Inside the cabin, you’ll find all the luxurious amenities typically associated with the Porsche name. The driver’s position resembles a 911, with plenty of gadgets and gizmos within reach. Two touchscreens (one a 10.1-inch display) provide controls for everything from the premium infotainment system to seat adjustments. If you’re hauling family, friends or co-workers, they’ll ride in comfort—there’s ample room for them plus space for luggage in the front and back. An old adage suggests that sometimes less is more. Without an engine, the Taycan offers fewer mechanical components for a driver to interact (play) with. No worries. Welcome to the new generation of electric sports cars.

84

HAMILTON

The Porsche Taycan will be the luxury sports car manufacturer’s first electric car when it hits the U.S. later this year. Engineers say the sports sedan can travel about 310 miles on a fully charged battery—a range that eclipses the industry leader, Tesla’s iconic Model S.

Rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs notoriously poured and pranced around with bottles of Cristal when music videos were his forte, but as a businessman today, tequila is his drink of choice. Five years ago, Combs partnered with one of the world’s largest spirits distillers, Diageo, to take over and reinvent a small firm, DeLeón Tequila. They rebranded the company’s existing lineup of exclusive tequilas as its Luxury Line (maybe you’ve heard of the $820 per bottle DeLeón Leóna?), and later rolled out a new trio dubbed its Ultra-Premium Line. In the middle of the new threesome is DeLeón Reposado ($60), a refined pale gold tequila that’s aged eight months in American oak and finished in French oak casks. Pour yourself a shot. There’s an immediate and unmistakable woody presence on the nose, but there’s much more going on—you’ll detect notes of caramel, citrus and banana. On the palate, roasted agave and black pepper give way to cinnamon, caramel and oak flavors. In essence, DeLeón integrates sweet and spicy, punchy and peppery throughout—unusual characteristics of typical woody reposados. It’s a unique tequila that Mexican spirits fans should absolutely try.

NEITHER A TRAVEL CLICHÉ NOR A TOURIST HOT SPOT, SCENIC OMAN MAY ACTUALLY OFFER THE TRUEST MIDDLE EAST EXPERIENCE. By Elise K. Guarna

Tucked around the coastal elbow of the Arabian Peninsula under a bright and cloudless sky lies a land of stunning natural beauty with a rich and ancient culture. The sultanate of Oman managed for a long time to elude the eye of the tourist masses—British actress-model Naomi Campbell calls it one of her secret escapes. From rolling desert sands to breathtaking mountain vistas, from grand Islamic architecture to pristine beaches, from world-class luxury resorts to hidden valleys bursting with palm trees, Oman has something magical in store behind every corner. Does that surprise you? Oman’s neighborhood—it borders Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates—is one you’ve heard about lately, but not necessarily for beachy serenity. Don’t fret; known as “the Switzerland of the Middle East,” Oman is so quiet and peaceful it was voted the fourthsafest country in the world for visitors by the World Economic Forum in 2017. In fact, I have rarely felt as safe anywhere in the world as I did in Oman, where the parks of any city are full of picnicking families late into the night and “Adi, ma mushkila” (“Don’t worry, no problem”) is the response to any request for help. You’ll read that Oman is sparsely populated, but take that with a grain of sand. Most of its nearly 4.5 million residents are clustered in the north, while the land to the south is sparse indeed—it’s desert. Oman is actually smaller

in area than the state of New Mexico, with more than double its population. Long the crown jewel of Oman’s capital city, Muscat, the Al Bustan Palace is the place to begin an indulgent journey through this singular Persian Gulf nation. Steeped in modern Omani history, the five-star hotel stands as the embodiment of Oman’s remarkable marriage of natural beauty, tradition and modern luxury. Now a Ritz-Carlton property, this unique hotel is a former palace and a favorite of Oman’s Sultan Qaboos, who has led modernization efforts during his 48-year rule. One certainly feels like royalty upon walking into the famous Bustan, to be greeted by the lobby’s iconic soaring ceilings and the intoxicating aroma of frankincense, native to the southern Dhofar region and the quintessential fragrance of Oman. Just outside the property, the unassuming beauty of Muscat awaits. Stroll along the Muttrah Corniche, a coastal road, at sunset and sample Omani cuisine at the celebrated Bait Al Luban restaurant, where your meal starts with complimentary frankincense water, said to heal all manner of ills. Mingle with tourists and Omanis alike as you wander the souq, or traditional market, surveying wares ranging from the kitschy to the strikingly beautiful. Stray off the main path to find famed Omani silver work and gold jewelry, or to admire the selection of khanjars, traditional Omani daggers. While Oman is widely known for its tolerance toward guests, Omanis view respect as a two-way street. Tourists of any religion or nationality will be warmly welcomed and treated with the genuine kindness and hospitality so central to the Omani identity. In return, locals ask visitors to respect their traditions by dressing more conservatively when outside hotels and resorts. For both men and women, that means covering shoulders, covering legs down to mid-calf and avoiding plunging necklines. Nowhere in Muscat is this more important than at the breathtakingly

elegant Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the only place in Oman where women will be asked to cover their hair. Incorporating design elements from great Islamic civilizations throughout history, the mosque boasts intricate mosaic work, an Iranian carpet hand-woven by six hundred craftswomen over four years and a 46-foot-tall chandelier of Swarovski crystal, which melds seamlessly with majestic white marble exteriors and fragrant gardens to create a final effect that is as effortless and tranquil as it is awe-inspiring. Taxis are widely available within Muscat and from all major points of interest, but they are generally not metered and can be quite expensive for tourists. Consider renting a car at the airport for more flexible transportation within the city and to explore the natural playground waiting within just a few hours’ travel from Muscat. The diversity and sheer beauty of the Omani countryside never ceased to amaze me. In just one weekend we could swim in the caves of Wadi Shab, watch the sun set from the top of a sand dune and stop for a lunch of fresh fish in the quiet seaside city of Sur, where turquoise waters wash up on beaches dotted with fishing boats and lined with white-washed houses, and where women wearing face-covering niqabs rolled down their car windows to wave at us as we drove through the narrow streets. Wherever I wandered I was greeted by smiling faces—often with a proffered bowl of dates. Drive down the coast and hike through one of Oman’s famous wadis (which loosely translates to “valley” but is often mistranslated as “oasis”). Spend a night in the Sharqiya Sands desert, and wake up with the sun for some dune bashing (off-road vehicle activity) or a leisurely camel ride. Continue to Jabal Akhdar (Arabic for “The Green Mountain”), with its sweeping canyon views, cooler climate and the magnificent Anantara resort. Akhdar is the secluded mountain Eden you never knew you needed. If you ever tire of sipping champagne in your private cliffside infinity pool, you can join an Omani guide to learn about the culture of the nearby villages, where ancient irrigation systems nourish the mountain’s renowned pomegranate trees, or sneak away to the lookout where Princess Diana once surveyed the Hajar Mountains. It’s perfect for a sunrise yoga session or an evening of stargazing in an unpolluted sky. For those craving yet another secluded paradise, the Six Senses Zighy Bay resort in the northern region of the Musandam Peninsula is one for the bucket list. Included on Condé Nast World Traveler’s 2019 Gold List, Zighy Bay describes itself as a reimagined fishing village—that’s if a fishing village were made up of private beachfront villas. Like anything worth having, getting to Zighy Bay requires a bit of work. But trust me, it is well worth the effort. Tucked into a tiny inlet between the mountains and the sea in Oman’s northwest corner, the resort is most easily accessible from Dubai, where guests are picked up at the airport and taken by 4x4 on a scenic journey culminating in a drive through a dramatic mountain pass. To kick off this unique experience the right way, skip the last leg of the drive and opt to paraglide into the resort. Once you’ve arrived, kick back and indulge. Charter a private boat and be whisked through the Omani fjords. Catch a fish, and it will be masterfully prepared for you at any of the resort’s restaurants. Spend the morning crafting a personalized wellness plan or simply being pampered in the world-class Six Senses Spa. Watch the sunset from the clifftop Sense on the Edge Restaurant before diving into one of the exquisite seven-course chef’s menus, or have a meal prepared for you in-villa. Here, as with anywhere else in Oman, the possibilities are endless.

WEDDED BLISS

It could be a wedding gathering at the famous resort Auberge du Soleil in California’s scenic Napa Valley, as featured in Jessica Kerwin Jenkins’ The Art of Entertaining (Rizzoli New York). Or it could be another celebration somewhere far from the vineyards, but where the golden light of just-before-dusk equally illumines the guests’ cheerfully colorful attire and the sparkling Dom Pérignon equally complements the succulent treats from the sea. Here the culinary preparations are by renowned chef Robert Curry; at your event they could be your own or the work of another artist in the kitchen. What matters is the vibe of effortless delight, and the way conversation seems to have an extra opportunity to sparkle. What matters is the moment—and the mood—and the memories you’ll make.

This page: A raw bar offering oysters, clams and prawns is an irresistible counterpoint to sparkling wine, but keep the menu understated so as not to overpower the beverages. Chef Robert Curry of Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley recommends serving sparkling wine with salty foods such as oysters or anything that’s fried and/ or cured, or fermented dishes, such as those made with bacon, soy or olives. Opposite page: Seared scallops with zucchini, corn and basil purÊe exemplify the flavors of the season (and locale); mix Islay dry gin with vermouth and orange bitters for a change-up from champagne.

Put dessert on wheels, as peach parfait and macarons here make the rounds of the patio on a convenient beverage cart. TIRED OF THAI, MEXICAN AND ITALIAN? TRY THE HEALTHY, TASTY FOOD OF ISRAEL. By Donna Rolando

cumin, paprika and cayenne, shakshuka is a hearty wake-up call for breakfast or brunch, but don’t be surprised to see it at the dinner table—it’s that versatile. There’s no right or wrong way to serve shakshuka, and plenty of recipes to prove it. Get creative and sprinkle in some feta cheese. Or let a seasonal veggie fare like eggplant introduce fresh variety to the egg core. If you’re looking for a dish that’s light yet filling at the same time, don’t pass up the chance to taste sabich, a hearty sandwich that can serve as lunch. Loaded atop a pita, there’s fried eggplant and hard-boiled eggs, along with Israeli salad, hummus and tahini. This popular dish is meatless but you won’t miss it as the sauce called amba wakes up your senses with a blend of pickled mangoes, turmeric and fenugreek. A familiar feature at falafel stands, the Israeli salad rounds out the recipe with a blend of tomato, cucumber and other diced veggies. For pasta like nothing you’ll find in an Italian restaurant but with winning qualities all its own, there’s Israeli couscous, also called ptitim. Devour this toasted, pearl-shaped pasta on its own with zuc-

chini, tomatoes and peppers. Or enjoy it as an accompaniment to a main dish such as grilled tilapia as the couscous inspires the chef ’s creativity. But what’s an Israeli meal without the Holy Land’s traditional dessert? Halvah, the sweet, tahini-based candy, gets its name from halwa, the Arabic word for sweet confection. It’s eaten in different variations across the globe but the Israeli version is made with sugar syrup, a sesame base and optional yummy accoutrements like seeds or nuts. It comes in slabs or in packaging, in flavors like chocolate or vanilla or a marble of both, and can be eaten as a dessert or as a companion to an Israeli breakfast. Halvah looks like fudge but is more crumbly in texture, but there really is no way to describe its unique taste. One should just try for himself. No matter how you indulge your curiosity about the wonderful world of Israeli cuisine, you’ll have no pangs of guilt. Remember that fresh and healthy ingredients are at the heart of this culinary style as you discover centuries-old taste sensations closer to home than ever.

Clockwise, from top left: Shakshuka, or “tomato eggs,” is a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner when paired with a fresh salad or bread for dipping; you won’t miss the meat on this ultimate vegetarian sandwich, the sabich, hugely popular in the metropolitan Tel Aviv area; couscous is a versatile, quick-cooking and delicious pasta; halvah is the perfectly sweet ending to your Middle Eastern meal.

They say everything old is new again, but here’s that truism on steroids. The “new” culinary revolution under way in the U.S. actually comes from traditions as old as time: Israeli fare with its winning combination of healthy ingredients and pizzazz. Look for it in hot spots like New York and L.A.—or in a neighborhood near you—as celebrated chefs embrace the trend and reap a bounty of awards. And if you know only hummus dip and falafel, it’s time to expand your culinary horizons by becoming familiar with a few dishes that many, many generations have enjoyed. Don’t let the name shakshuka fool you. Also spelled shakshouka, it may sound like something complicated, but this savory dish of poached eggs nesting in a spiced tomato stew is a one-skillet wonder that cooks up in a snap. This traditional Israeli meal with North African roots goes from stovetop to oven to table in just 40 minutes. (And, yes, it’s often served right in the skillet, taking simplicity to the max.) Soak up all that hearty goodness with challah or pitas, and you’re dining on shakshuka like a pro. With a zesty array of spices such as

WINE

rosé has its day Don’t blush—there’s no need to be embarrassed. Nowadays, it’s perfectly O.K. to like rosé. More than that, it’s cool. It puts you on the cusp of a cultural wave that has swept up wine lovers from coast to coast. Call it a rosergence. Jay-Z has rapped about it. Drew Barrymore has reveled it in, releasing her own label of pinot noir rosé. Although pink wine still represents a mere 1.5 percent of the total U.S. table wine market—a proverbial drop in the industry bucket—demand for it is swelling. From mid-2016 to mid-2017, domestic consumption of rosé increased 53 percent by volume, surging to $258 million in sales, according to a report last year by Forbes. Over that same period, sparkling rosé also enjoyed a bump, its sales jumping by nearly 20 percent. It all adds up to a serious turnabout in reputation for a wine once snickered at by sophisticates. Starting in the 1970s, and for the good part of a generation, rosé was widely seen as the sweet pink drink of fru-fru cocktail parties, a déclassé concoction for less-than-nuanced palates, much of it sold in jugs by the likes of Gallo and Sutter Home. White zinfandel was the variety by which many people then came to know rosé, and it was often said that the wine’s very existence owed to an error. According to a broadly circulated story, it was born in 1975 when Sutter Home winemaker Bob Trinchero botched a production, giving rise to a high-in-sugar wine with the saccharine character of a Hallmark card. To Trinchero’s surprise, consumers loved it. For better or worse, a phenomenon was born. This, of course, was another era; the American market was just catching on to wine. “In that sense, those sweet rosés were great for the industry,” says Niki Wente, a fifth-generation vintner at venerable Wente Vineyards in Livermore, California. “They got a lot of people drinking and enjoying wine. And the more people learned, the more excited they became about the possibilities.” Wente is one of a growing number of young vintners who are unabashed in their embrace of rosé. Just last year, she expressed that fondness through the first release of Niki’s Pinot Noir Rosé, a crisp but complex wine that bears no resemblance to the cloying blushes of decades past. Dancing lightly on the palate, with notes of cantaloupe and orange zest, this rosé has a closer kinship to the traditionally bone-dry rosés of France, one of several countries where pink wine comes with a rich pedigree. Wide-ranging in its provenance, with deep roots in Spain, Portugal, Germany and Italy, among other wine-producing powers, rosé is also made in myriad styles, from such varietals as pinot noir, grenache and gamay, to name just a few. It appears in shades that span the pink-hued spectrum, from the reddest raspberry to the palest salmon. But no matter its iteration, rosé, at its best, is bright, refreshing and a delicious food wine fit for all occasions. Hence the growing popularity of a wine-world catchphrase. Say it with us: Rosé all day!
