HYDE PARK
Who would have thought....42 years ago, I set out on a journey with a few simple ideas in mind. Be thoughtful, courageous and discover something special in life each and every day. In 1976, we opened our first shop with 1,000 square feet. Today, we operate 10 locations in Denver, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Las Vegas and Newport Beach in more than 30,000 combined square feet. Hyde Park has continued to evolve to reflect our clients’ love and passion for fine jewelry, diamonds and premier watch collections. This fall we are proud to add several new experiences to our store portfolio. Three new Swiss watch boutiques will open in the Scottsdale Fashion Square’s newly remodeled luxury wing. Our newly renovated Denver presentation has a new Rolex Shop and Hyde Park’s flagship, which includes seven dedicated brand corners (Patek Philippe, Cartier, Chanel, IWC, Panerai, JaegerLeCoultre and Hyde Park’s Estate Collection). The Denver renovation also created space for ENGAGE, our most innovative project. With ENGAGE by Hyde Park, a new omni-channel concept, we have a very focused mission for this endeavor. ENGAGE will cater to the diamond and engagement client who is seeking a technologically enhanced design, AI enabled search and knowledge-based expertise on today’s bridal customer. This experience, both online and in our new concept store (adjacent to Hyde Park in Denver’s Cherry Creek Shopping Center), will afford the exploration of diamonds and mountings online, in home or in-store. We will launch a dedicated ENGAGE app and website prior to the holidays. Stay tuned—this concept is three years in the making, which includes technology development in Los Angeles, Orange County, N.Y., Louisiana, Spain, China, Ukraine

HYDE PARK
In April, more than 1,600 guests filled the Centennial Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency to raise more than $1.4 million for Denver Health’s School-based Health Centers and STEP Program, which offers specialized pediatric-focused care to treat most health conditions that affect school-aged children. Hyde Park’s own CEO Michael Pollak was the recipient of this year’s Wellington E. Webb Award for Outstanding Achievement in Healthcare Philanthropy. Paula Herzmark, director of the Denver Health Foundation, said of Michael, “He is an exceptional person... he is an exceptional leader because he leads by example.” The NightShine Gala also was an occasion for Denver Health to recognize the 30 years that its school-based health centers have provided care to youngsters in 17 Denver public schools. Many of these school-based health centers run STEP Programs (Substance Abuse Treatment Education & Prevention) to offer personalized mental health and substance abuse treatment for teens and young adults. The evening’s entertainment, hip-hop artist Flo Rida, brought the audience to its feet and kept the party going on the dance floor. One lucky live auction bidder walked away with an incredible prize from Hyde Park: a once in a lifetime experience with designer Roberto Coin in Venice, Italy!

Hyde Park hosted the 19th annual Diamonds in the Rough Celebrity Golf Tournament at Sanctuary Golf Course to raise money for children’s and healthrelated charities including Girls Inc., the Global Down Syndrome Foundation and Denver Health. The event kicked off with a dinner and live auction at The Palm Denver on the eve of the tournament, where actor and comedian Matt Iseman received the Humanitarian of the Year Award for his support of the Denver community and Diamonds in the Rough over the past several years. At the golf classic the following day, national and local celebrities, current and former professional athletes, and top business and community leaders were in attendance to enjoy the two-day event and show their support for the benefiting charities.

the educational impact
ACC.HYDE.DiamondsDoGood.indd 16
Opelo Matome understood the immense impact education can have on one’s life from a very young age. Speaking at the 2018 Diamonds Do Good Awards in Las Vegas on May 31st, Matome proudly reminisced about a photo from her kindergarten graduation in her hometown of Gaborone, Botswana. “In this photograph,” she says, “I am wearing a black cap and gown, the widest grin and absolutely bursting with pride. I knew then that I would always find joy in learning.” That joy would grow into a passion that would carry Matome on a lifechanging educational journey. Excelling throughout primary and secondary school, she went on to become a Botswana Top Achiever, which afforded her the unique opportunity to study at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, Yale University. It was there that she began to fully understand not only her country’s dedication to positive change, but also the dedication of the entire diamond industry to furthering the education of those living in their communities worldwide. “I am ever grateful for the opportunities I’ve been granted through the support of organizations like the Diamond Empowerment Fund and my country’s prioritization of education,” Matome says. “It is truly one of the most powerful weapons of change.” Michael Pollak, Diamond Empowerment Fund (D.E.F.) board
member and president of Hyde Park Jewelers, adds, “We love to see students like Opelo with such passion and drive, and being able to help them succeed and contribute to their country’s success is really at the core of the D.E.F. mission.” The presence of the diamond industry has helped fuel her country’s dedication to its young people’s education and has contributed a great deal to Matome’s personal hopes and plans for the future. “For a nation such as Botswana, once labeled one of the poorest countries in the world,” she says, “the discovery of natural resources, effective policies and reinvestment in these resources resulted in fast and sustained economic growth.” With her Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, Matome looks forward to working toward positive global change upon returning to Botswana. “By choosing to study economics,” she says, “I hope to broaden my understanding of the world, equip myself with the necessary quantitative and analytical tools to interpret this world, and apply creative and innovative solutions to its problems.” Continuing her education at Yale, Matome will spend the next two years as a Swensen fellow and strategic analyst before going on to pursue a JD/MBA, which she hopes will lead to a career that will allow her to combine law and economic policy to encourage entrepreneurship and foster cohesion amongst the legal, public and private sectors in her home country of Botswana.

Elvis Presley’s diamond Omega timepiece (below right) sold in May 2018 for $1.8 million, far surpassing estimates of $52,900 to $106,000. Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona (above) set the record for a timepiece sold at auction when it garnered $17.8 million in October 2017.
ACC.HYDE.Auctions.indd 40
You’ve undoubtedly seen the headlines of late: “Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona fetches $17.8 million at auction” or “Elvis Presley’s Omega sells for a record $1.8 million.” While these results are not exactly commonplace, they do open the debate on what makes a watch valuable. Some say that provenance (who owned it and the stories behind it) and condition/ originality are key. As we see it, there are three major watch auction houses at the moment: Phillips, Christie’s and Sotheby’s. Keep in mind that the auction scene is a microcosm of a much larger industry. Over the last three years, we’ve noticed two distinct pillars emerge within the watch industry: highly desirable modern references (the Rolex Daytona, Patek Philippe Nautilus and more) followed by vintage pieces. The vintage market has positively exploded, forcing even the most novice of collectors to look again at that watch his grandfather gave him. In some (rare) cases, he’ll find a diamond in the rough, and it can be worth a considerable deal of money.
What does this all mean for collectors? Well, sadly, the price you’ll pay for your next vintage watch will assuredly be higher. Bolstered by auction houses and vintage dealers, we’ve seen prices rise over 300 percent in some cases. But fear not: Deals are still out there; you just need to know where to look. Form a relationship with your retailer and get to know the person who curates the store’s vintage watch selection. He or she can help you find something you love within your budget. If raising your paddle in a room full of strangers isn’t your scene, there’s no shame in sticking to modern timepieces. There have been some incredible watches produced over the last few years. Have a look at the Tudor Black Bay GMT, Patek Philippe Calatrava and the Rolex Explorer, all of which should be available at your local authorized retailer and are likely to retain or gain value as time goes on.

FACE TIME Orlando Bloom’s watch collection would be admired by even the most serious collectors. These three timepieces are among the highlights.
Bloom’s vintage 1950s Rolex Milgauss 6543 was designed in the atomic age and was Rolex’s first watch made for people working within magnetic fields.
BRITISH ACTOR ORLANDO BLOOM IS MAKING THIS ERA HIS OWN. YOU CAN DEPEND ON HIM FOR A SHOW WORTH WATCHING—OR A WATCH WORTH SHOWING. By Daria Meoli jacket and black tuxedo pants with his Bremont AC1 when he escorted on-again-off-again girlfriend Katy Perry to the 2016 Met Gala. Bloom is a practicing Buddhist and a humanitarian. In 2009 he auctioned off several of his valuable watches to raise funds for UNICEF, a global children’s charity for which he is a goodwill ambassador. Pieces on the block included a 1960s Breitling Navitimer 806 and a 1973 Rolex Explorer II 1655 (nicknamed the “Steve McQueen Rolex,” despite a lack of evidence to prove that the screen legend ever owned this model). Months after the auction, a less altruistic organization took possession of Bloom’s prized collection. During the infamous “Bling Ring” crime spree, a group of teenagers from the Hollywood Hills broke into Bloom’s Los Angeles home and stole his watches. Eventually, police apprehended the teens, and Bloom’s watches were returned. The incident hasn’t diminished the actor’s passion for collecting. Whether he is wearing a Patek Philippe Nautilus while out to lunch with Flynn or an IWC Big Pilot 5002 while taking red carpet selfies on Instagram, Bloom continues to mark time in style. And his day is far from done.
One of the most famous Rolex designs, the Submariner is known as the James Bond watch and is built for adventure. This diver’s watch has the ability to resist water pressure down to 1,000 feet.

Put it down, perhaps, to a sense of timing. At 22, days after graduating from London’s Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Orlando Bloom was cast in Peter Jackson’s epic—and epically successful—Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Canterbury, England, native immediately followed up his role as Legolas by playing Will Turner in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Bloom has described his early career as feeling like a “rocket to the moon.” Now at 41, Bloom spends less time swashbuckling and more time on smaller passion projects and raising his 7-year-old son, Flynn Christopher Bloom. On-screen, Bloom has some of his biggest star turns accessorized with swords and elf ears; off-screen, as befits a master of timing, he’s an enthusiastic luxury watch collector. Bloom has a penchant for vintage Rolexes, and his collection includes an ultra-rare 1950s Rolex Milgauss 6543 with black rotating bezel and a vintage Rolex Submariner 6538 Big Crown, the model worn by Sean Connery as James Bond in Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger. Glashütte is a small town nestled between the forests and hills of southeast Germany, halfway between Berlin and Prague. This is where NOMOS Glashütte, one of the few owner-operated watchmaking companies in the world, has been creating some of the finest mechanical timepieces drawing on over 170 years of Glashütte tradition. NOMOS watchmakers count among the very best in their field. NOMOS Glashütte creates and produces watches in accordance with the principles of the Deutscher Werkbund, the precursor to the Bauhaus movement. Outstanding craftsmanship with the renowned prowess of German engineering, combined with advanced research and state-of-the-art technology, makes up the foundation for the superior quality of its timepieces. The designers from NOMOS’ in-house creative agency in Berlin give this collection its superb form. NOMOS watches have received well over 130 prizes for design and quality. The characteristics shared by all NOMOS watches include top-quality materials, refined dials, elegant and usually slender hands, narrow bezels and an exceptionally clear form—many models have long been considered classics. Today, there is a new caliber for these watches: neomatik date, also known as the DUW 6101. The name neomatik stands for an entirely new generation of automatic caliber— highly precise, slender and produced by NOMOS in Glashütte. The DUW collection launched in 2015 and has constantly built upon its successes. Now, the DUW 6101 has an innovative self-winding movement that enables these classics to feature a tailor-made date display. More than three years of research and development went into creating this caliber. The date can be set quickly and easily in both directions with this timely update from NOMOS.

THE ROLEX OYSTER CASE WAS THE FIRST WATER- AND PRESSURE-PROOF WATCH CASE EVER INVENTED—AND IT’S STILL THE BEST.
The Oyster case has long been one of the determining factors in Rolex’s reputation for excellence, and it constitutes an important milestone in the history of contemporary watchmaking: Invented by Rolex in 1926, it was the world’s first waterproof case for a wristwatch thanks to its patented system of screwing down the bezel, case back and winding crown against the middle case. In 1927, Rolex put its effectiveness to the test by equipping a young Englishwoman, Mercedes Gleitze, with a watch for her swim across the English Channel. After more than 10 hours in the water, it continued to work perfectly, providing irrefutable proof that the Oyster case was waterproof. Today, thanks to the case’s hermetic construction (solid middle case, screw-down case back and crown, friction-fitted crystal and bezel), all Rolex Oyster watches are guaranteed waterproof to a depth of at least 100 meters (328 feet), increasing to 300 meters (984 feet) for the Submariner divers’ models and up to 3,900 meters (12,795 feet) for the Rolex Deepsea. The Oyster’s middle case (the central section of the case) is stamped and machined out of a solid block of 904L steel, 18-karat gold or 950 platinum. It is extremely robust and forms the backbone to which all the other parts of the case are securely fitted. Some Professional
models feature a crown guard on the side; these shoulders are stamped as an integral part of the middle case. The sapphire crystal is mounted on a gasket, and the whole is fitted against the flange of the case and hermetically clamped tight by the bezel or a sealing ring. Oyster case backs are hermetically screwed down against the middle case. All models in the Oyster collection are equipped with the Oyster case and a Twinlock or Triplock winding crown. The Twinlock screwdown winding crown, developed and patented by Rolex, comprises a double system of seals, guaranteeing waterproofness to a depth of 100 meters. The Triplock comprises 10 components made of materials selected for their inherent qualities, including 18-karat gold or 904L steel for the crown and polymers for the gaskets. Once assembled, the system is screwed down against the Oyster case, offering watertight security akin to a submarine’s hatch. All Oyster cases are manufactured in-house by Rolex. After the final control operations, every Oyster watch is immersed in water and subjected to a pressure 10 percent greater than that found at the depth to which it is guaranteed—25 percent more in the case of divers’ watches. Robust and waterproof, this perfectly proportioned and elegant watch case blends form and function.

ancient influence Since ancient times, Japanese artists have worked with the subtle gradations between light and shadow in nature. Grand Seiko was designed with this same aesthetic. Key to the design are polished surfaces that reflect rays of light and respond to the movement of that light. Also notable for the purity, simplicity and subtlety of its lines, Grand Seiko has “functional beauty.” This style does not interfere with the reading of time, but enhances it with harmonious case lines and uncluttered, easy-to-read dials. Grand Seiko watches have a hard-edged, flatsurfaced case through a process called Zaratsu, or blade polishing. Hand-polishing gives the case a mirror-like smoothness where light and shadow play.
Grand Seiko makes watches with three different kinds of movements: mechanical, quartz and Spring Drive, a Seiko innovation. The Spring Drive movement combines the best of mechanical and quartz technologies. It’s an automatic watch that gives quartz accuracy without using a battery. This is a testament to the watchmaking savvy of a firm that has made mechanical watches since 1895. The ultimate test of a fine watch is how accurately it measures the passage of time. A Grand Seiko quartz watch is accurate to +/- 10 seconds per year. Grand Seiko Spring Drive’s accuracy of +/-1 second per day is unprecedented for a watch powered by a mainspring. As for Grand Seiko mechanical watches,
each one comes with a certificate indicating that it has passed the Grand Seiko Inspection Standard. These watches are tested in more positions, at more temperatures, for more days (17) to stricter tolerances than Swiss chronometers are. They must be accurate to -3 to +5 seconds per day (the Swiss standard is -4 to +6). If a mechanical watch doesn’t meet those strict tolerances, it is rejected. The watch designer who created the Grand Seiko style in the 1960s, Taro Tanaka, said he had three goals: “That users will feel the watches are high performance; to meet the Japanese aesthetic sense; and to design watches that will be judged highly forever.” Done. Done. And done.

Comprised of four worlds: culture, diving, aviation and motor sport, Oris watches are made for everyday wear and offer the luxury of common sense. That means Oris provides the best possible watch for the money, providing useful complications and functional designs. Staying true to a rich heritage, Oris is one of the few Swiss watch companies to remain independently owned and operated. OUR “THROWAWAY” CULTURE HASN’T TOUCHED PATEK PHILIPPE. IT WILL STILL FIX ANY OF ITS WATCHES DATING BACK TO THE THIRD YEAR OF VICTORIA’S REIGN, AS ITS TECHNICAL TRAINING MANAGER EXPLAINS. By Karen Alberg Grossman

We were wondering about the future of watchmaking and how a company dared promise to fix any of its watches. So we caught up with David Bonilla, Patek Philippe’s technical training manager, for a chat. How did your watchmaking career begin? In 2005 I attended a WOSTEP (Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Program) in Secaucus, N.J. I graduated in 2007 and promptly found a job at Swatch Group’s New Jersey after-sales facility. I soon moved to the new Omega boutique on Fifth Avenue, servicing products and interacting with clients. In 2010 came an opportunity

year from those seeking watchmaking jobs, but finding the right talent is challenging, not just for Patek Philippe but for the industry worldwide. We realized several years ago that to maintain our watches and to ensure a strong follow-up support structure, we needed to start training and teaching in-house. So in 2013 we created the first Patek Philippe Institute in Shanghai. This program differs from other two-year watchmaking schools in two ways. First, toward the end each student is taught to service Patek Philippe quartz and mechanical calibers. Second, after finishing the program, students must go to Geneva to complete a four-week training. If they pass, they are certified to work on Patek Philippe watches. Is it true that you will service and repair all Patek watches ever made? Yes. Even watches that date back to 1839. It’s our commitment to our clients. How is that possible? In Geneva we have a separate center dedicated to restoration. There we still maintain many of the original pieces of equipment with which these early watches were made. We pride ourselves on our ability to recreate individual parts if necessary. The time frame may be longer than with a normal repair, but the watch will be returned to the client

to work with Patek Philippe at its main office in Rockefeller Center. After five years there working as a watchmaker, I was offered the chance to manage the service center. Your watch repair professionals are known for their exceptional skills. How many do you have and how do you find and train them? At The Henri Stern Watch Agency in New York City, we have 39 highly qualified individuals who handle each step of the repair process; 31 are watchmakers who do the repair, restoration and regulation of the mechanical movements of our clients’ watches. Case repairs are undertaken by four highly trained polishers, who restore cases and bracelets to their original luster. Two watchmakers are reserved for quick service work, so that clients who visit our New York office can have a strap changed, a bracelet adjusted or a battery replaced on the spot. We also have two individuals who perform quality control on all the work done on each watch. Admittedly, we have a difficult time finding qualified and capable people to work at this high level of watchmaking. We get many resumes throughout the

just as beautiful as the day it came out of the showroom. How long does the average repair take? It varies depending on several factors, including the rarity and complexity of the watch and whether it’s a restoration or service to a modern piece. Have you ever had watches that you couldn’t fix? Here, yes. We’ve received timepieces that were crushed or were so fused together by rust that we were unable to fix them locally. We usually refer these especially difficult cases to the factory where they have the machinery and knowledge to complete the repairs. What qualities do you look for when you hire? The No. 1 trait is commitment. Of course, all candidates are given a practical exam and are thoroughly interviewed, but we’re looking for highly skilled individuals who will be committed to the company, not just for years of service, but with genuine passion for their work. It’s a lot to ask for, but I believe that if we don’t search for individuals with such commitment, we’ll never deliver on our promise to produce the finest watch money can buy. Are there enough young people these days who want to be watchmakers? Yes, I would say there’s more interest today in watchmaking among young people than there used to be. I attribute that to social media and various horological societies that keep alive the passion for our craft. So I think the burden is now on the watchmaking industry to nurture and develop this interest among young people. We learned lessons from the quartz crisis of the 1970s and early ’80’s, when the industry lost a lot of talent and risked losing mechanical know-how. We’re on steadier footing now, but we need to better promote the craft of watchmaking in order to pass the baton to a future generation. What is the most rewarding part of your job? Helping to provide the highest level of service for all our clients. I firmly believe in strong commitment to service; nothing is more rewarding than restoring our timepieces for our clients’ wearing pleasure. The toughest or most stressful part? Managing each aspect of the repair process. When a watch comes in for service, each department must work perfectly in sync with the others. If there’s even a small mismatch, it can cause issues for the whole repair process. Bottom line, what would you say distinguishes a Patek Philippe watch from the competition? Passion and commitment. In everything we create there’s a high level of passion, even in the smallest unseen details found in our mechanical watches. We back up that passion with a strong commitment to service, and the knowledge to ensure that our watches will perform perfectly for many years to come. This page from top: The spiral shaped sculpture outside the Patek Philippe headquarters in Geneva symbolizes time; the Patek Philippe Reference 5270 was featured in the HBO series Billions; the Patek Philippe Museum, located in Geneva’s Art District, houses a private collection of hundreds of timepieces.

breitling’s navitimer 8 A TRIBUTE TO ONE OF WATCHMAKING’S GREATEST LEGACIES. Breitling, famous for its chronographs and its strong link to aviation, has just launched a new pilot’s watch collection: the Navitimer 8. The 8 in its name is a nod to the Huit Aviation Department, which was set up in 1938 to produce cockpit instruments as well as classic pilot’s watches for civilian and military use. At the time, Willy Breitling chose the name “Huit,” the French word for eight, as a reference to the eight-day power reserve offered by its storied cockpit instruments. Georges Kern, Breitling’s CEO since the summer of 2017, is particularly excited about the new product line. “With the Navitimer 8,” he says, “we are honoring not only our rich heritage but also our pioneering role in building chronographic instruments. But while the Navitimer 8 pays tribute to our past, it also does something considerably more important. It opens the door to a very exciting future.” The Navitimer 8 family introduces five distinct models that are worthy heirs to watchmaking’s richest aviation tradition, drawing heavily on Breitling’s design DNA and the technical features of the first board clocks and pilot’s wristwatches as well as on the Huit Aviation Department’s commitment to quality.
060_HYDE_FW18.indd 2
Each of the five new models in the collection expresses a design code —conceived down to the minutest detail—with a high recognition value. Guy Bove, creative director at Breitling, who fully immersed himself in the design of the board clocks and wristwatches created by the Huit Aviation Department, described the inspiration behind the Navitimer 8’s exterior design cues as follows: “With the Navitimer 8, we wanted to create a watch that was in line with our vision for the brand’s future, but which would also pay tribute to the great Breitling watches of the early to mid-20th century. From a design perspective, it occupies a unique position between Huit’s onboard clocks and the Navitimer.” The new watches resurrect some of the design values of the Huit Aviation Department’s onboard clocks—especially in terms of the dials and bezels—as well as Breitling’s iconic pilot’s watch, Reference 768, with the rotating bezel and distinctive triangular pointer that made it a favorite among pilots. Just as important were the luminous hands against black dials, a combination that offered easy readability in any lighting conditions, and which also contributed to Breitling’s aviation heritage. The Navitimer 8 watches recall the uncompromising flair of that earlier era.

The Wellendorff rope necklace
For 125 years, the Wellendorff manufactory has combined a passion for unique designs with superb craftsmanship to create something very special: exquisite ornaments that endure for generations. By concentrating on two pieces of jewelry, the Germany-based manufactory truly attained perfection in the creation of the “softest necklace” and the “most perfect ring.” These pieces have achieved cult status and both were inspired by very personal love stories. When a master goldsmith’s quest for perfection and quality merges with a generous helping of love, great things emerge. There are only three goldsmiths in the Wellendorff manufactory, and possibly in the whole world, who possess the deep understanding of the material and the extraordinary skill to produce a thread of 18-carat
gold by hand. So, it comes as no surprise that the Wellendorff brand is considered internationally as a synonym for the highest level of skill in the art of goldsmithing. For four decades, the silky-smooth rope has fascinated its wearers worldwide with its blend of apparent opposites. Hard metal becomes as soft as silk. An unmistakable piece, instantly recognizable by its feel even with closed eyes. Every rope is made by hand with the utmost care, every coil is wound with precision and every thread crafted separately. The art of goldsmithing requires time and stillness. Time that Wellendorff is happy to accord to every single necklace. Time is akin to luxury, and the fine necklaces and rings crafted at this family-owned company are the very epitome of luxury.

ALWAYS IN STYLE, THESE CLASSIC JEWELS ADD A TOUCH OF SIMPLE, LUSTROUS ELEGANCE. By Rita Guarna Whatever oyster first dreamed of pearls had no idea the gems would shine for millennia. Pearls pop up in the Bible and the Koran; were prized by the ancient cultures of Egypt, India and China; and were a big reason—so the historian Suetonius tells us—that Julius Caesar invaded Britain. The costly gem symbolized purity, but also wealth, as usually only royalty or nobility could afford pearls. With the advent of cultured pearls in the early 1900s, that changed. Since famous French fashion designer Coco Chanel incorporated them into mainstream fashion almost a century ago, pearls have become the accessory that makes a look—and never gets old. Today, a new generation of celebrities and tastemakers is appropriating this timeless gem, giving pearls modern meaning and edge. Far from Park Avenue, fashionable women of all ages
are throwing on strands of pearls with everything from black lace cocktail dresses to blue jeans and white T-shirts. From the concert stage to the red carpet, British singer Rita Ora has used a smattering of differentsized pearls to create youthful yet ethereal hair accessories. Singer-songwriter Rihanna rocks pearls with sexy multi-strand collars and layers upon layers of matinee-length strands. Actresses Emma Stone and Lupita Nyong’o have added luster beyond their accessories, wearing pearlcovered gowns for black-tie events. Actress Jessica Alba has been photographed many times wearing pearl earrings. From decidedly modern black pearl-drop earrings to a pair of hanging gold chains punctuated with small luminescent pearls to front-and-back bauble pearl studs, Alba proves that pearl earrings
transition seamlessly from day to night. Whether you prefer the iconic five-strand pearl necklace Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Kate Middleton’s funky white pearl lariat, there are many trendy ways to wear pearls now. For a preppy look, headbands, hair clips and other hair accessories are getting the spotlight. For a more avant-garde approach, pearls are being used as accents in art-inspired sculptural earrings. The unique shapes and textures of baroque pearls make the perfect accessories for a free-spirited boho style. For traditionalists looking for a twist on a classic, the Gucci loafer received an update with pearl-studded heels. But perhaps the final word on pearls came, with fitting simplicity, a half-century ago from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. “Pearls,” she said, “are always appropriate.”

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but pearls are a woman’s timeless companion. Long known as “the queen of gems” because of their popularity with royalty (among the few who could afford them), pearls have gone mainstream without losing their elegance. Today’s celebrities are making sophisticated and sexy fashion statements with them. From Scarlett Johansson’s luxurious multi-strand, layered look to Jennifer Lawrence’s chic front-and-back black pearl-stud earrings, young fashionistas are donning this classic gem with bold, modern style.

END PAGE If the name Nikos Koulis sounds familiar, it’s because his masterful jewelry has been everywhere lately — on the necks (and wrists and ears and fingers) of celebrities like Laura Dern, Reese Witherspoon, Saoirse Ronan and Chrissy Teigen and in the pages of publications like Marie Claire and Vogue. Essentially, Koulis has achieved the type of international acclaim some artists can only dream about. Hoping to perfect his craft beyond what he learned growing up in Greece in a family of jewelry designers, Koulis left the Mediterranean and studied gemology and jewelry design at the Gemological Institute of America. He returned to his country of origin and in 2006 created his eponymous brand, known for sourcing stones in special cuts from around the world and producing pieces with iconic goldsmithing and an artistic spirit. Koulis has an atelier in Athens and two boutiques in Athens and Mykonos, and has since amassed an upscale clientele worldwide who both wear and collect his “radiant futurism” creations that are as timeless as they are intricate. “I think beyond the boundaries of fashion,” Koulis has said. “Jewelry is beyond trends. Its quality instills in it a long-lasting value and aesthetic appeal.” Koulis’ rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings go beyond traditional silhouettes and mix diamonds and gems, metals and enamels, colors and shapes. His brand’s unique craftsmanship has won Nikos Koulis Jewels a multitude of jewelry and design awards worldwide including being named a three-time Couture Design Award winner (in the 2015 Bridal category and in the 2016 and 2018 Haute Couture category) and also granted the 2017 International Jewelry Designer Award by VicenzaOro and a 2018 Town & Country Jewelry Award.
