a time to redefine Is it time to redefine luxury? The term means something different to each of us. Does it have to be expensive or can it be affordable? Exclusive or inclusive? Elitist or democratic? Ethically sourced or opaque manufacturing? Do you prefer to acquire luxe online or experience the product in person? In 1964, songwriter Bob Dylan wrote: “ The order is rapidly fadin.’ And the first one now Will later be last For the times they are a-changin’.” In many ways our society has pivoted in our perceptions and consumption habits, yet we hold true to traditional principles: We expect quality, value and superior customer service experiences when making the commitment to a discretionary or luxury purchase. At Hyde Park, we embrace these values and honor the opportunity to earn trust and loyalty from our clients. We proudly represent legacy brands that resonate from generation to generation. While some brands fail to connect with today’s clients, we at Hyde Park continue to edit our collections to represent extraordinarily designed pieces of exceptional quality, which are also ethically sourced. We continue to recognize our obligation to support the communities in which we operate our 11 points of sale. For the last 20 years, we have pursued thoughtful philanthropy with health-based and child
needs organizations, both directly and through our Diamond in the Rough Foundation. In the next several months, we will be significantly upgrading our digital platforms. We are committed to engaging with you in whatever way you prefer, both online and in-store. Our goal is to make our conversations with you as seamless and effortless as possible. We always want to improve the client experience, whether you have questions about caring for watches and jewelry or acquiring special gifts. Bob Dylan had no idea how fast the world would change, but we’re excited and privileged to continue the journey with you.

Kwiat stands for more than beautiful diamonds. Behind the name is a family that has mastered the craft of creating the most beautifully cut diamonds in the world. It began in 1907, when Sam Kwiat opened his store in New York City. Soon, his son, David, joined him, turning his passion for diamonds into what would become one of the most trusted houses of jewelry design. Today, David’s son, Lowell, and his sons, Greg, Russell and Cory, follow in Sam’s footsteps, crafting the most exquisite diamond jewelry. It starts with setting the strictest standards for diamond cutting. Nature gives a stone its color and clarity, but it takes the hand of a master craftsman to shape it into something brilliant. Without a superior cut, even a diamond with perfect color and clarity will appear dull and lifeless. At Kwiat, every diamond is cut with precision to unlock the brilliance within. In fact, their cut is so precise that their round brilliant diamonds exceed the “Excellent” cut grade set forward by the GIA, the premier diamond grading institute. While all Kwiat round diamonds receive a cut grade of Excellent, only a subset of GIA Excellent diamonds are worthy of becoming a Kwiat diamond. Details do not stop at cut. Every piece of diamond jewelry is light and airy, designed to float comfortably against the skin. Flexible and fluid connections allow jewelry to move easily with the wearer. Diamonds are perfectly matched in clarity, color and carat, then set into jewelry designed specifically for their stones. And because family is so important at Kwiat, many of the designs include marquise-shaped diamonds, a favorite of David Kwiat. One of our favorites is the Kwiat Star—an eight-point star featuring marquise and round diamonds that sit in symmetrical form with harmony and balance. Earrings, pendants, rings and bracelets from this collection sparkle with a classic elegance that is timeless.

A DEGENERES TIMEPIECE TRIO Comedian and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres seldom leaves home without a Rolex or Patek. Here are three standouts from her enviable collection:
OBSERVING CAREFULLY BOTH HER GUESTS AND THE TIME HELPS THIS TALK-SHOW HOST KEEP HER HUMOR SHARP BUT GENTLE. SHE’S A WATCHFUL COLLECTOR TOO. It’s about more than laughs—that’s the deal with comedian-turned-talk-show-host Ellen DeGeneres. Her generous, benign spirit is another key to her success, and her style of gentle self-mockery takes the sting out of her sendups of absurdity—hers, ours and the world’s. While some comics make us guffaw but inwardly recoil, DeGeneres is the one we want to hang out with in our daytime living rooms. Who else could have shattered barriers as she did by coming out on her sitcom back in the ’90s (both her character and the comedian herself) while leaving us laughing and liking her so darn much? While DeGeneres, now 60, wrestles with an exaggerated rep for being “nice,” she does achieve apparently effortless rapport with everyone who sits in the guest chair. That takes sensitivity. But each of us has an aggressive demon somewhere inside. Where’s hers? Maybe a clue is on her wrist. There seems to be nothing demure or stammeringly apologetic about DeGeneres’ acquisition of luxury watches. She collects. And no one doubts that her bank account is good for every tick on every dial. Oh, she’s casual enough, letting the luxury jewelry peek out beneath her left sleeve during episodes and appearances and interviews, but never actually showing it off. “I have both vintage and new models,” she remarked about a little Swiss brand called Rolex. She has, to name a wristful, the Rolex Submariner with a blue dial and ceramic bezel, the Rolex Yacht-Master Everose with an Oysterflex bracelet, the collectible Rolex Explorer II “Steve McQueen” 1655 and—her personal favorite— the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. DeGeneres, the wife
of actress Portia de Rossi, is photographed frequently wearing this classic design—she even wore one during her 2018 Netflix standup comedy special, ironically titled Relatable—and has at least seven of them. One of the comedian’s most valuable Daytonas is surely the $175K rare 1969 Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona Reference 6241, which she debuted on a 2018 episode of Jerry Seinfeld’s Netflix series, Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. (It’s OK to be jealous of both her watch and her famous pals, we promise.) But any true collection needs variation, which is why she has also splurged on a few Patek Philippes, including the Perpetual Calendar Chronograph 5271, the Nautilus Ref. 5711 and the Nautilus Annual Calendar Chronograph. She keeps her wry perspective, though. “For centuries we’ve checked the time by looking at our phones,” she tweeted after Apple announced the Apple Watch in 2014. “Having it on your wrist? Genius.” DeGeneres and her shows have amassed at least 30 Emmys, and she has voiced a fish in Pixar’s Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, written some books, hosted the Grammys, the Oscars and the Emmys, made Spectrum commercials and launched her own production company, record label, lifestyle brand and a series on HGTV. She was a spokesmodel for CoverGirl and even served as a judge on a season of American Idol. Most important, though, DeGeneres has championed generosity and kindness throughout her career, ending each show by saying, “Be kind to one another.” If she’s as kind and generous as all that, couldn’t we borrow just one watch?
DeGeneres wore this Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 5204 on a 2018 episode of her talk show. And she’ll never forget the date or time with this baby, as its functions show hours, minutes, seconds, day, date, month, moon phase, a leap year indicator and a perpetual calendar. Its price tag? Over $275K.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40 is one of the comedian’s go-tos, with its elegant platinum smooth bezel and glacier blue patterned dial.
The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Everose was introduced in 2015 and features the brand’s Oysterflex bracelet, which allows for increased comfort and mobility. DeGeneres wore this during an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.

Patek Philippe Ref. 5930G Men’s World Time Chronograph in white gold with blue opaline hand-guilloche dial center and matte navy alligator strap.
Today’s world travelers need to see the time in different time zones at a glance. World Time watches meet that need with the ultimate in mechanical ingenuity and aesthetic beauty. Prior to the mid-19th century, time was a local matter. Towns and cities around the world relied solely on the relative position of the sun to determine the time of day, which would be displayed on a centrally located clock, perhaps on a church steeple, in the town square or in a jeweler’s window. No national or international conventions defined how time should be measured, when a day began and ended, or even the actual length of an hour. While astronomers in Greenwich, England, had established mean time (time measured by a pendulum clock) back in the 1670s, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was of no practical use, except to sailors who used it to calculate their position at sea on transoceanic journeys. For the average citizen both in the U.S. and abroad, longdistance travel and communication were so painstakingly slow that standardized time was irrelevant. There was no such thing as a frequent traveler. Then came the railroads. As railroad tracks began to crisscross entire countries and continents, transporting people, communications and goods at speeds heretofore unimagined, the need for an international time standard became imperative. In 1876, Sir Sandford Fleming, chief

become ubiquitous in the years since these advances. Jet propulsion has engineer of the Canadian Pacific Railway—who incidentally was also instrumental in the laying of the Pacific Cable as a way to provide faster, taken over from the steam engine. racing with rolex Rolex has linked its fame with the word “Daytona” over the years, and that’s no accident. The Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona is perhaps the Swiss brand’s most iconic watch, adored and admired by celebrities and less-known collectors alike. The timepiece was created with racing and speed in mind, and it has come to be regarded as one of the world’s most reliable watches due to its roots with speed racing in Daytona Beach, Florida. How? In 1935, after breaking a speed record of 276 miles per hour in his car Bluebird V at Daytona Beach, Sir Malcolm Campbell notified Rolex that the watch he wore during that race was still running. The fact that this timepiece withstood speeds and temperatures not typically experienced by owners was a testament to its craftsmanship. From there, Rolex’s relationship with racing grew steadily and, in 1963, the company launched a new-generation chronograph, the Cosmograph, dedicated to race-car drivers. This watch has evolved over the years to become a legend, a cherished trophy for this race, a tribute to the winning driver’s skill and a must-have for a collector’s vault, eventually becoming known by the prestigious name Daytona. In 1992, Rolex formalized its long-standing association with
Daytona and Daytona International Speedway by becoming the official timepiece and title sponsor of the epic 24-hour endurance race held annually in January. In 2001, the brand became the official partner and the official timepiece of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Rolex is also the timekeeper for Formula 1 Racing and started its sixth season with F1 when its Grand Prix season began in March. Meanwhile, three-time FIA Formula 1 Drivers’ World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart has been a Rolex Testimonee since 1968. Rolex is hardly adorning racers’ wrists with the same watches season after season. In 2009, the watchmaker introduced the Everose Daytona made with the brand’s exclusive 18K pink gold. It has calibre 4130 and the central sweep seconds hand allows an accurate reading of 1/8 second. As with all models, its Oyster case is nearly scratchresistant and waterproof to a depth of 100 meters. The diameter of the timepiece is 40mm and the bracelet features the Rolex-patented Easylink rapid extension system, which allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by up to 5mm. In 2016, the watchmaker released the Cosmograph Daytona with a Cerachrom steel bezel. Gentlemen, start your engines.

PORSCHE ELECTRIFIES THE GREEN VEHICLE MARKET WITH ITS FIRST ELECTRIC SPORTS SEDAN. By Darius Amos
Careful what you wish for—right, Elon Musk? The Tesla chief took the auto world by storm when he rolled out his line of luxury electric cars, but little did he know his call for the globe’s other leading automakers to manufacture competitive “green” vehicles would be met head-on by Porsche. The German company, with a nearly 90-year history of producing high-end sports cars, has more than stepped up to Musk’s challenge. It is launching a new high-performance sports sedan, the Taycan (pronounced TIE-con), that will stand toe-to-toe with Tesla’s iconic Model S. The Taycan—a Eurasian word that translates loosely to “lively young horse”—is Porsche’s first all-electric vehicle. With a starting price in the $90,000-to-$100,000 range, it aims to become the leader in a market that’s been ruled by Tesla. So what makes this colt run? For starters, it boasts two electric motors that generate a whopping 600 horsepower, which Porsche says muscles 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds. Not bad considering Porsche’s legendary 911 Turbo S does that sprint in roughly 2.5 seconds. Early track results show that the
Taycan has an electric range of about 310 miles. The car’s power source is an 800-volt supercharger battery—plug in the car for just 15 minutes and it will have enough juice to travel 248 miles, or New York to Boston, without stopping. The Porsche power on the Taycan is tamed by all-wheel drive traction, though a rear-wheel drive version is an anticipated option for the future. Inside the cabin, you’ll find all the luxurious amenities typically associated with the Porsche name. The driver’s position resembles a 911, with plenty of gadgets and gizmos within reach. Two touchscreens (one a 10.1-inch display) provide controls for everything from the premium infotainment system to seat adjustments. If you’re hauling family, friends or co-workers, they’ll ride in comfort—there’s ample room for them plus space for luggage in the front and back. An old adage suggests that sometimes less is more. Without an engine, the Taycan offers fewer mechanical components for a driver to interact (play) with. No worries. Welcome to the new generation of electric sports cars.
52
HYDE PARK
The Porsche Taycan will be the luxury sports car manufacturer’s first electric car when it hits the U.S. later this year. Engineers say the sports sedan can travel about 310 miles on a fully charged battery—a range that eclipses the industry leader, Tesla’s iconic Model S.

Displaced from his home in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) when he was 6 years old, Joseph Munyambanza had a difficult childhood growing up in the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in Uganda. However, at a very young age, Munyambanza saw the opportunity to do tremendous good. “I needed to have hope, and I needed to believe in the future,” he says. “And so, at 7, I began a journey. That journey would take me to a government school in Uganda.” Though his school conditions were less than ideal, often with more than 200 students being taught by one teacher, Munyambanza excelled and found hope in education. At just 14, he founded COBURWAS, a nonprofit organization that empowers young leaders to tackle challenges facing their communities through educational programs and facilities. COBURWAS stands for Congo, Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda and Sudan, representing the nationalities of refugees in his camp. “I had a vision,” Munyambanza says. “I wanted to start a tutoring program for my fellow young refugee boys and girls who did not have access to quality education. I founded... COBURWAS...[and] the program had a great impact. Many girls and boys started completing primary school and one 12-yearold girl even became the best student in the whole country.” It was his unfaltering spirit, innate leadership and relentless passion to improve access to education in Africa that made Munyambanza a perfect candidate for the 2010 inaugural class of the African Leadership Academy, one of Diamond
Empowerment Fund’s (D.E.F.) beneficiaries located in South Africa. “Supporting young, passionate students like Joseph is so crucial, and institutions like the African Leadership Academy help guide these innovative minds toward their goals of transforming the world for good. That is the core of D.E.F.’s mission,” says Michael Pollak, D.E.F. board member and president of Hyde Park Jewelers. Today, Munyambanza holds a degree in biochemistry from Westminster College and has been recognized globally for his good work. He is a member of the British Council Global Changemakers network and has served as an advisor on international education to the UN Secretary General and to former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Munyambanza was recognized alongside President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia as one of four Global Citizen Award winners in 2013 by UN Secretary General Ban KiMoon. At the invitation of former President Bill Clinton, Munyambanza also took part in the Clinton Global Initiative in March 2015, where he spoke on transitional justice and how to rebuild affected communities after wars. He is currently working with the Minister of Education of the DRC to enable 1 million children to enroll in school for the first time. “There were sad moments in my life, but I was determined to be strong—determined to help myself, to help people in the camp to have a better life and show the world that we are not disposable just because we are refugees.” Munyambanza’s story is yet another shining example of how diamonds do good around the world.

It could be a wedding gathering at the famous resort Auberge du Soleil in California’s scenic Napa Valley, as featured in Jessica Kerwin Jenkins’ The Art of Entertaining (Rizzoli New York). Or it could be another celebration somewhere far from the vineyards, but where the golden light of just-before-dusk equally illumines the guests’ cheerfully colorful attire and the sparkling Dom Pérignon equally complements the succulent treats from the sea. Here the culinary preparations are by renowned chef Robert Curry; at your event they could be your own or the work of another artist in the kitchen. What matters is the vibe of effortless delight, and the way conversation seems to have an extra opportunity to sparkle. What matters is the moment—and the mood—and the memories you’ll make.

WINE
rosé has its day Don’t blush—there’s no need to be embarrassed. Nowadays, it’s perfectly OK to like rosé. More than that, it’s cool. It puts you on the cusp of a cultural wave that has swept up wine lovers from coast to coast. Call it a rosergence. Jay-Z has rapped about it. Drew Barrymore has reveled in it, releasing her own label of pinot noir rosé. Although pink wine still represents a mere 1.5 percent of the total U.S. table wine market—a proverbial drop in the industry bucket—demand for it is swelling. From mid-2016 to mid-2017, domestic consumption of rosé increased 53 percent by volume, surging to $258 million in sales, according to a report last year by Forbes. Over that same period, sparkling rosé also enjoyed a bump, its sales jumping by nearly 20 percent. It all adds up to a serious turnabout in reputation for a wine once snickered at by sophisticates. Starting in the 1970s, and for the good part of a generation, rosé was widely seen as the sweet pink drink of fru-fru cocktail parties, a déclassé concoction for less-than-nuanced palates, much of it sold in jugs by the likes of Gallo and Sutter Home. White zinfandel was the variety by which many people then came to know rosé, and it was often said that the wine’s very existence owed to an error. According to a broadly circulated story, it was born in 1975 when Sutter Home winemaker Bob Trinchero botched a production, giving rise to a high-in-sugar wine with the saccharine character of a Hallmark card. To Trinchero’s surprise, consumers loved it. For better or worse, a phenomenon was born. This, of course, was another era; the American market was just catching on to wine. “In that sense, those sweet rosés were great for the industry,” says Niki Wente, a fifth-generation vintner at venerable Wente Vineyards in Livermore, California. “They got a lot of people drinking and enjoying wine. And the more people learned, the more excited they became about the possibilities.” Wente is one of a growing number of young vintners who are unabashed in their embrace of rosé. Just last year, she expressed that fondness through the first release of Niki’s Pinot Noir Rosé, a crisp but complex wine that bears no resemblance to the cloying blushes of decades past. Dancing lightly on the palate, with notes of cantaloupe and orange zest, this rosé has a closer kinship to the traditionally bone-dry rosés of France, one of several countries where pink wine comes with a rich pedigree. Wide-ranging in its provenance, with deep roots in Spain, Portugal, Germany and Italy, among other wine-producing powers, rosé is also made in myriad styles, from such varietals as pinot noir, grenache and gamay, to name just a few. It appears in shades that span the pink-hued spectrum, from the reddest raspberry to the palest salmon. But no matter its iteration, rosé, at its best, is bright, refreshing and a delicious food wine fit for all occasions. Hence the growing popularity of a wine-world catchphrase. Say it with us: Rosé all day!

It stands to reason, then, that a piece of jewelry received from your beloved is positively priceless. Wellendorff, the Pforzheim, Germany-based jewelry designer, has produced pieces inspired by intimate love stories and crafted with its own passion for perfection for the past 125 years. In 2019, Wellendorff introduced four new ring designs that infuse precious materials with goldsmith artistry.
