Temple St. Clair tells the story about her transformative

hen Temple St. Clair went to Florence, Italy, as a student more than 30 years ago, she was not expecting to delve deep into the world of fine jewelry and Italian craftsmanship. But as luck would have it,

HYDE.ss21 MTD-TSC_20-21_FINAL.indd 24

the devoted art history buff was sent on a wild goose chase that ignited her passion. Her mother came to visit and asked Temple to find the perfect artisan to set an ancient coin in a necklace, laying the foundation of a long career in fine jewelry.

Fast forward to 1986, when the legendary Barneys department store picked up St. Clair’s line as the first fine jewelry brand it ever carried. Today, her iconic crystal amulets, golden angel pendants, oval-link gilded chains and cabochon rings continue to take inspiration from the classic motifs, aesthetics, and craftsmanship of Florentine jewelry. In fact, the designer even continues to work with some of the same artisans she met more than 30 years ago, including the Florentine Jewelers Guild. “Artisanal work, craftsmanship and the people I work with — they’re so important to me, as is my own background of studying art history and literature in Florence, traveling, and learning how to look at art and sculpture and connect the dots of different cultures, symbols and meanings,” St. Clair tells Hyde Park Jewelers. The influence of Florentine style is palpable, even in the designer’s

spring 2021 collection, which consists of beautifully rendered beehive motif link bracelets and necklaces in 18-karat gold with diamonds and delicate diamond-covered bees who rest on amulets or take the form of charms. The collection also includes plenty of turquoise and royal blue moonstone woven throughout vineshaped cuffs, earrings, necklaces, and rings. “I’ve gone back to looking at Botticelli and the Birth of Venus and his Primavera paintings,” St. Clair says of the collection. “For spring, it’s kind of this light-hearted gift and beauty within the symbolism of the bees. The Renaissance art sort of had the meaning of hopefulness, unity, the idea that love conquers all and that the universe continues to turn beyond these crises that we ended up in. Spring takes on a sort of a lighter tone.” But beyond the jeweler’s classical pieces, she has also generated a wide range of work, including her Haute Couture line of animalshaped pieces covered in some of the rarest gems in the world; Mythical Creatures from The Golden Menagerie, for example, debuted at the Louvre Museum in Paris in January 2015. St. Clair took inspiration from endangered

animals and created pieces such as leopardshaped rings rendered in gold, emerald, ceylon sapphire, and diamonds set atop ebony wood. Her color theory and cosmic collection touch on some of the same themes of the natural world but at a more accessible level. “I play in different areas of celestial, astronomical, and astrological areas,” she says. “Going back into the literature that I studied as a student in Italy, I went back to the poetry of Dante, the history of that era. I think that’s what keeps me going all these years. I am so fortunate that I have an intense curiosity and imagination around these things.” These days, St. Clair has been doing a lot less traveling than she usually does, but she has found a home in researching the world through her trove

of colorful books, finding inspiration for new pieces as well as new works of art (she is also an illustrator). “I keep exploring, I keep researching, and this year it’s been sort of like traveling through my books in my library,” she says. “Every day here at the office, I see more books arriving. I’m always finding the next thing, and I’m interested in going deeper.” That unique approach to design is just one of the many reasons why a Temple St. Clair piece conveys meaningful storytelling, even if passed down for years to come. The designer admits that she’s been lucky to have certain collectors who come back over the years specifically for the strong stories

HYDE.ss21 MTD-TSC_20-21_FINAL.indd 27

her pieces evoke. “The archetypes of the goddess Athena and the goddess Artemis are so important to me,” she says. “And it’s not for nothing, but these are strong women figures. Athena is a thinker and an intellect, and Artemis is out guarding the creatures of the forest and the earth. These two archetypes flow through what I do.” Wearing her everyday rock crystal amulet on her signature doubled-up leather cord, St. Clair asserts that even in dark times, jewelry has a unique transformative power. “At the end of the day, you can be barely dressed for your Zoom call, but jewelry can really elevate your sense of being,” she says. “I think jewelry is so personal during these times, and it’s almost a form of armor.”

THE GAME’S LUMINARIES, PAST AND PRESENT, SPORT LUXURY WRISTWATCHES WORTHY OF A FASHION GRAND SLAM. By Donna Rolando

38

HYDE PARK

Whether it’s the Aussie Open, Wimbledon or any other Super Bowl of tennis, the diehard fans are all about the game, from the stats to the heroes, and we applaud their single-minded dedication. But there are also those among us—fashionistas, you know who you are—for whom a tennis tourney is also an exhibition of the most exquisite arm candy. No matter their gender, play strategy, or country of origin, tennis players have long dazzled fans with watches they wear on and off the court. For trendsetters and -getters, Serena’s powerful backstroke is a reason to gaze wide-eyed at the wide screen for a closeup of her wrist. Big matches like Wimbledon can draw a million bucks’ worth of luxury timepieces. No wonder fans are watching the watches.

ROGER FEDERER:

This all-time great, affectionately known as King Roger, is world ambassador for the watch that’s synonymous with his Swiss homeland—Rolex. Cover your ears, fashion lovers: This 20-time Grand Slam champ loves Rolex not so much for the status as for memories of where they’ve been together. Rolex was there when he broke Pete Sampras’ all-time Grand Slam record at Wimbledon in 2009. His choice then: Datejust II silver blue Arabic Ref. 116334. “When I was finally able to lift the trophy, I was wearing my Rolex on my wrist,” recalls the 39-year-old legend. With an annual income of more than $100 million, Federer has built some Rolex collection. A newer model, associated with his eighth Wimbledon win in 2017, is the Rolex Datejust 41-millimeter (pictured here) in steel and yellow gold. Its automatic 3235 movement packs a 70-hour power reserve, so Federer can keep his mind on the game.

Now 30, this Danish champ realized her dream when she claimed her first Grand Slam title in 2018 at the Aussie Open, and she has the enormous prize to prove it. Not only did the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Trophy (Daphne for short) get its own plane seat and pillow, but Wozniacki gave it a hug. Giving the award ceremony a bit of the red carpet, she came decked with diamonds, showing her soft spot for fine jewelry. Most memorable had to be the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 116576TBR with its pavé diamond dial, baguette-cut diamond bezel and blue dials. On the awards night she was heard to observe: “It’s a dream come true.” Could she have meant the watch?

This Romanian champ came away from her battle with Serena Williams for her first Wimbledon title in 2019 cool and collected. It was reported that Halep never betrayed a hint of nerves on her way to the big win at age 27. In Halep’s words, “I played the match of my life.” Maybe it was the watch. She’s seen here with two trophies: the Wimbledon Rosewater Dish held high for all to see, and Hublot’s Big Bang One Click Italia Independent in dark blue velvet. That’s a mouthful for a watch that’s as feminine as it is seductive, with a mix of black ceramic, diamonds and velvet. Truly a girl’s best friend, Big Bang boasts 42 diamonds on its finely set bezel, plus 10 more on the velveted dial. One click means the strap can be changed easily and quickly. No room for boredom here!

The legendary Rolex Cosmograph Daytona may have been born for racing, but it has won the heart of tennis stars too. German player Angelique Kerber wore her Cosmograph (40 millimeters) to accept the coveted Rosewater Dish to mark her 2018 Wimbledon win. The 33-year-old’s Cosmograph is a combo of high tech and sleek beauty with its Oyster steel and white dial. All those numbers on the bezel are a tachymetric scale—how else can race-car drivers measure speeds up to 400 miles? For a tennis champ, it also may come in handy. Who knows how fast former world No. 1 champ Kerber moves for her winning shot?

The actor has been spotted on numerous occasions wearing his Rolex Yachtmaster in 18K yellow gold, complete with a 31 jewel movement and a rotating bezel.

ACTOR BRADLEY COOPER KEEPS MUM ABOUT HIS PERSONAL LIFE. BUT THE WATCHES HE’S OWNED REVEAL HIS PASSION FOR QUALITY—AND CHARITY. American Sniper, directed by Clint Eastwood. As to his wardrobe, Cooper rocks a bomber jacket and jeans with the same aplomb he shows in a classic tux. And he’s just as likely to wear one of his favorite IWCs with flip-flops as with formal wear. Besides having owned the Big Pilot, he has an IWC Portuguese Chronograph, featuring a classic dial with Arabic numerals and slender, propeller-style hands. He was already firmly associated with IWC when he was named its brand ambassador in 2018. But before then, he was often seen wearing the vintage Rolex GMT-Master “Root Beer,” reportedly given to him by Clint Eastwood when the two were filming American Sniper. Initially released in 1954, the watch can display two time zones simultaneously (as requested by Pan American Airways for its zone-hopping pilots). But it earned its “Root Beer” nickname for its striking brown bezel. Cooper has also been spotted wearing an 18-karat yellow-gold Rolex Yachtmaster. Designed for rugged outdoor activities, with a 31-jewel movement and rotating bezel, the watch is famous for its precision. What you won’t see Cooper wearing any longer is that IWC Big Pilot. The charitable star—in 2014 he founded the Charles J. Cooper Patient Support Fund to assist cancer patients and their families—agreed to auction off the watch, post-Oscars, to benefit the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation. Sotheby’s estimated the listing at between $20,000 and $30,000, but thanks partly to the watch’s cool Oscars provenance, it eventually went for $60,000, no doubt pleasing its former owner. Oh—and “Shallow” garnered an Oscar for Best Song, which probably cheered Cooper as well.

Cooper has been the ambassador of IWC since 2008, and auctioned off the Big Pilot IW500901 Edition “Le Petit Prince” for $60,000. He still owns this 46mm IWC Big Pilot.

The Rolex GMT-Master “Root Beer” was reportedly a gift to Cooper from his American Sniper director, Clint Eastwood.

HYDE PARK

It was an unforgettable Oscars moment: stars Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga performing “Shallow,” the perfect gem of a duet from their Academy Award-nominated remake of A Star Is Born. The 2019 performance raised collective goose bumps, and so did another gem, this one on Cooper’s left wrist: an IWC Big Pilot IW500901 Edition “Le Petit Prince,” with a navy blue dial and a rosegold case. Boasting the largest ever IWC-manufactured movement, the watch would be a knockout under any circumstances. But like all of the watches in IWC’s “Petit Prince” line, this one also bore a stirring inscription on the back from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved book of the same name: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly.” The watch was already a celebrity in its own right, having made numerous appearances on Cooper’s wrist: in the stands at Wimbledon witnessing Andy Murray’s historic 2013 win against Novak Djokovic, taking a stroll down the red carpet at the Hollywood premiere of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 and dazzling audiences in the movie Aloha in 2015. Cooper is famously reticent about his personal life. In a 2018 New York Times article, responding to a request for emotional revelations about the filming of A Star Is Born, he politely declined. “I don’t necessarily see the upside of it,” he explained. Instead, he lets his work—and his wardrobe—tell the story. The former began with his 1999 walk-on in the television series Sex and the City but didn’t take off until Cooper’s costarring role in 2009’s The Hangover. He proved he could play dramatic and comedic roles with equal dexterity in the 2012 romcom Silver Linings Playbook and 2014’s

TIMEPIECES

watchmaker with a heart

THIS COMPANY’S TIMEPIECES BRIGHTEN THE LIVES OF GENERATIONS OF CHILDREN—AND NOT JUST THOSE LUCKY ENOUGH TO INHERIT THEM. By Christen Fisher The 42-millimeter watch features a black dial with a manually executed vertical satin finish, and is presented on a vintage black calfskin strap with contrast stitching. Its sapphire-crystal case back exposes the self-winding caliber 324 S C FUS and bears the inscription “Children Action 2018.” Prior to auction, the watch was put on view for collectors and enthusiasts in Geneva, Hong Kong and New York before returning to Geneva, where on Oct. 15, 2018, it fetched 2.3 million CHF (Swiss francs), or about $2.6 million USD for Children Action. Though the titanium version of the Ref. 5524 was an exclusive offering for a very special purpose, it is possible to be part of Patek’s tradition of fine watchmaking and commitment to future generations by considering the current collection’s Calatrava Pilot Travel Time. The Ref. 5524 is available in white gold with a blue dial or in rose gold with a brown dial. For those who prefer a more modestly sized watch, there is also a 37.5-millimeter version, Ref. 7234, offered in the same colorways. Both the 5524 and the 7234 Calatrava Pilot Travel Time contain the same movement as the Children Action watch. A mechanical self-winding movement with a sweep seconds hand, the caliber 324 S C FUS boasts a dual time-zone mechanism that indicates both local and home time with day/night indicators in apertures on either side of the dial. The blue dials have white gold applied numerals with luminescent coating and baton-style luminous hands in blued white gold. The brown sunburst dials have subtle black gradation toward the periphery, gold applied numerals with a luminescent coating and baton-style luminous hands in rose gold. Both the white and rose gold versions feature sapphire-crystal case backs and are waterresistant up to 60 meters. Beginning at $48,500.

“You never actually own a Patek,” Patek Philippe’s advertisements often say. “You merely look after it for the next generation.” On the surface, that’s a marketing slogan that communicates the brand’s commitment to being the finest watchmaker in the world. It assures collectors and enthusiasts that each timepiece Patek creates is worthy of being passed down as an heirloom, a legacy. But those words are more than a slogan; they’re a motto that attests not only to the merits of the brand’s products, but also to its enduring values. For more than 180 years, cultivating the next generation and caring for its legacy have been as much a part of Patek Philippe’s DNA as fine Swiss watchmaking. As the last independent, family-owned Genevan manufacturer, Patek Philippe is a champion and supporter of Children Action, a Swiss foundation established in 1994 to provide hands-on assistance to children and adolescents regardless of their nationality, culture or religion. The foundation manages various projects around the globe, such as the prevention of youth suicides. It offers psychosocial assistance and access to health care, education and food, as well as support for children with cancer, adhering always to its own belief that “the first human right is the right to a childhood.” Patek Philippe’s concern for future generations extends far beyond its clients’ progeny and its own to the health and well-being of all the world’s children. To this noble end, since 2005 Patek Philippe has been creating one-of-a-kind watches and donating them for auction with all proceeds benefiting Children’s Action. Most recently, in 2018 Patek created Ref. 5524T-010, the first and only titanium version of the Ref. 5524 Calatrava Pilot Travel Time. A very resilient and lightweight metal, titanium is rarely used for Patek Philippe timepieces, adding to the singularity of this custom timepiece.

SETTING A RECORD, HELPING A CAUSE Since 2005, Only Watch has been collaborating with Patek Philippe on their biennial auction of oneof-a-kind luxury timepieces by the world’s finest watch manufacturers. This endeavor funds research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a degenerative neuromuscular disorder that affects one out of every 3,000 males worldwide.. Established in 2005 by Luc Pettavino after learning his son was afflicted with the disease, Only Watch has raised more than 70 million euros (more than $84 million U.S.) over the course of eight auctions for the Monaco Association against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies AMM). For Only Watch 2019, Patek created Ref. 6300A-010 Grandmaster Chime, a model of Patek Philippe’s most complicated wristwatch and the first and only one in steel. Steel is an extremely rare case material for the manufacturer and particularly uncommon for a grand complication. Originally launched in 2014 to coincide with the company’s 175th anniversary, the Grandmaster Chime became part of Patek’s regular collection in a white-gold version in 2016. It features an incredible 20 complications, including five acoustic functions. The double-face case with the guilloched hobnail pattern is endowed with a patented reversing mechanism. Apart from its steel case, the Ref. 6300A-010 Grandmaster Chime, created explicitly for Only Watch 2019, stands out with its golden opaline and ebony-black dials as well as the inscription “The Only One” on the subsidiary alarm time dial at 12 o’clock, a further hallmark of its exclusivity. Prior to auction, the Ref. 6300A010 Grandmaster Chime, along with the entire Only Watch collection of 50 one-of-a kind pieces, embarked on a seven-week world tour beginning at the Monaco Yacht Show and making stops in Dubai, Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taipei before returning to Geneva for auction. On Nov. 9, 2019, at the Four Seasons Hôtel des Bergues Geneva, it fetched a record-breaking CHF 31 million (Swiss francs—equivalent to almost $34.5 million U.S.), making history for Patek Philippe not only as the maker of the world’s most expensive watch, but also as the donor of this sum to scientific and medical research.

Who have been your biggest mentors in the jewelry industry? I’m fortunate enough to be surrounded by thought-leaders in the industry who have provided me with invaluable guidance. However, my most valued of mentors has to be my father. He’s a seasoned jeweler equipped with the ebbing knowledge of genuine Italian craftsmanship, and from a young age I would spend hours watching him work. He built his company from the ground up right in the heart of the City of Gold, Vicenza. My father took the time to explain every facet of the trade to me, and I recall being particularly fascinated by the cannello per saldatura, the welding torch. I was enamored by the beauty of the flames and how they would shape my father’s meticulous designs into illustrious shapes. In those moments, his passion was truly becoming mine, and it still is today. Why is sustainability so important to you, and what is involved in creating sustainable jewelry? Over the years we have witnessed the undeniable impact that our trade has had on our planet, such as ecological damage caused by

HydePark_ACC_SP21_MTD-MDM_48-49_FINAL.indd 51

industrial mining. This is why we’re passionate about making changes so we can ensure that our practices contribute to the beauty of our planet — not the chaos. All our products are handmade in Vicenza, Italy, by local Italian artisans, and we are proud to use 100 percent recycled silver and 18-karat gold in our creations, which look identical in appearance to newly mined silver and gold. Adopting these practices is equally important to me on a personal level, as I’m a father of two young boys, and I want to do my part to leave them with a brighter future. As Marcus Aurelius said: “What we do now echoes in eternity. Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.” How is Italian culture represented in your designs? Aside from every creation being designed by an Italian and then made in Italy by Italian artisans, the answer is in the inspiration. Italy is my home and offers inspiration in almost every corner of its realm. I’m proudly Italian and have transferred that energy into some of our collections that have been direct results of this, such as MONETA collection, which highlights the old coinage of Venice. What do you want men to feel when wearing your jewelry? We are all unique by definition, and I praise uniqueness as the most attractive aspect of humankind. Yet sometimes we can forget this, and I create jewelry to remind men of their own individuality, their uniqueness. Also, Italian culture is synonymous with style, and I was raised within a society that deeply associated style with not only what you wear but also how you carry yourself. For me, what you wear can guide how you carry yourself, and if you marry that concept with individuality, you have the answer of how I want men to feel when they wear MARCO DAL MASO — a stylish individual who’s aware of his own uniqueness. How would you describe your personal style? I’m wild, unapologetic when it comes to layering, and I certainly believe that more is more. But most of all I’m Italian, so I’m very meticulous and tapered in my style.

After more than a year of staying home, many of us are ready to travel and explore the world again. With testing and travel restrictions changing frequently, many people feel safer traveling domestically, and you thankfully don’t need to fly too far to find an escape. The island of Hawaii is one of the country’s jewels, and it has a unique culture and relaxed atmosphere that make you feel you’ve left the real world behind while still having the comforts of being in the United States. If you are looking for a trip a little closer to home, Sonoma County in California offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life and has activities for the entire family as well as fine restaurants and experiences that feel truly special.

TRAVEL HYDE PARK 54

The island of Hawaii is one of the most unique and beautiful places in the world. Where else could you drive from a sunny beach to the peak of a snow-topped volcano in just a few hours? The aptly nicknamed Big Island has everything you could want in a Hawaiian vacation, whether you’re looking for an indulgent, relaxing retreat on the beach or an adrenaline-filled adventure. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is one of the most iconic hotels in Hawaii. It is located on the pristine coastline, just a short drive from the airport but a world apart. The resort embraces and celebrates Hawaiian culture at every turn, from its world-class cuisine to conservation programs, cultural classes, and experiences that immerse you in the island’s natural beauty. While there is much to explore on the island, there’s plenty to do in the sprawling resort too. It has seven

pools, including King’s Pond, a fresh and ocean water pool filled with more than 4,000 tropical fish, including a spotted eagle ray. Swimming among the marine life is an unforgettable experience, and without the island’s strong ocean currents, it’s safe for children too. There’s also an incredible spa with treatments incorporating local herbs and traditions, six fabulous restaurants, and plenty of on-site activities offered through the extensive gym program. Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection, is another magnificent property on the island. It recently underwent a $200 million renovation, which generated new residences and offerings, including opening a Goop shop on property with Gwyneth Paltrow-approved products. The rooms have Above: The Pool at Mauna Lani. Right clockwise: King’s Pond at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. The Spa has tranquil outdoor soaking tubs. Cultural experiences abound at Four Seasons.

beautiful ocean views and are decorated in a contemporary style with nods to the island’s natural beauty and history. The resort is also home to the Mālama Honu program, which cares for baby sea turtles on-site. Once the turtles are large enough to survive in the wild, the hotel releases them every Fourth of July on Turtle Independence Day. Both hotels specialize in watersports, including surfing, diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and Hawaii’s traditional outrigger canoes. If you’re out at the right time of day, you might catch a glimpse of whales or a pod of playful dolphins in the distance. Be sure to leave time to explore the beautiful island. The hotels’ expert concierge services can arrange perfectly planned itineraries catered to your preferences. It can be overwhelming to plan a trip on your own because there’s almost too much to do on the island. Renting a car, either from the resort or a single-day rental at the hotel, is a smart idea. The Big Island is, indeed, very big, and it can take hours to drive to some of the prime sights. Of course, a helicopter tour is a quick way to see the island, and Paradise Helicopters offers tours with knowledgeable pilots. You will have

breathtaking views of areas inaccessible by car and see gorgeous waterfalls, valleys, and volcanoes. If you’re up for a hike, drive an hour to Pololü Valley. At the top, there is a gorgeous scenic lookout over the dramatic, lush coastline that leads to a hike down into Pololü Valley. The hike is steep and takes 20 to 30 minutes, so be sure to wear sneakers or hiking boots, but it is certainly worth the effort. At the bottom is a pristine, black-sand beach. If you go early in the morning, you’ll have it almost all to yourself. On your drive back to the hotel, stop in the charming town of Hawi. It’s full of boutiques and art galleries as well as some delicious restaurants where you can refuel after your hike. If you want to see the other side of the island, Pohoiki Beach, also known as Isaac Hale Beach Park, is a new black-sand beach created in 2018 by volcanic activity. It’s also easier to get to than Pololü Valley, and the drive will show you a different side of the island. Above: Waves crash on the black sands of Pohoiki Beach. Right from top: Hiking is one of the best ways to explore the island. You’ll never forget paddleboarding as the sun sets.

While its neighboring Napa Valley might make more headlines, Sonoma has world-class wineries, a diverse coastline, and much more to do than taste wine all day (but you can certainly do that too!). Hotel Les Mars, a Relais & Châteaux property, transports you to France with its dramatic limestone facade, opulent décor filled with 17th- and 18thcentury antiques, and Old World sensibility. The boutique hotel has just 16 rooms, each with its own style. It’s located in downtown Healdsburg, so it’s a great choice for guests who want to be in the middle of it all and have less driving to do. Hotel Les Mars has partnerships with some of the best wineries in the region, including Chalk Hill, Lancaster and Merus, and can arrange for a chauffeured day of exclusive tastings. Montage Healdsburg opened last year as the area’s premier luxury resort. It is located on a gorgeous property in the heart of wine country and offers guest rooms and suites that all have outdoor space, so you can enjoy the spectacular views wherever you are. It was designed in harmony with the natural surroundings, and with an environmentally conscious focus. Spa Montage is absolutely wonderful, offering relaxing treatments with products created from plants on the property, as well as advanced facials from Swiss brand Valmont. It also has a French-inspired lunch, called Paris on the Terrace, and charming hikes among the rolling vineyards. The winery can even pack a picnic for you to bring with you on the hike. Sonoma is known for its excellent restaurants. There are plenty of farm-totable spots offering seasonal menus, some that change almost daily, as well as European favorites and Michelin-starred restaurants that provide the ultimate fine-dining experience. For a casual and delicious meal, head to The Girl & The Fig, which offers French-inspired fare, fresh salads, and tasty sandwiches. For a superb fine-dining experience, SingleThread Farms is one of just 14 restaurants in the United States with three Michelin stars, so you can be assured it will be one of the best meals you will ever have. It operates its own farm that supplies the restaurant with the freshest and highest quality produce,

He trained in Japan, so he brings a delicate Japanese sensibility to the dishes, such as his iconic hot pots, creating a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. It also has an exquisite five-room inn with a fabulous dining program. Once you’ve had enough wine and fine dining, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the area’s natural beauty. There are incredible hiking trails, including Sonoma Valley Regional Park, Jack London State Park, and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, which has a 25-foot waterfall. FOUR NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLES COMBINE LUXURY, PERFORMANCE, PRACTICALITY AND ECO-FRIENDLINESS. CHARGE! By Darius Amos

Manufacturing eco-vehicles isn’t new for Audi, but the German automaker makes its debut in the burgeoning luxury compact EV crossover class with the 2021 Q4 e-tron. The smaller sibling to the midsize e-tron, this little guy packs a punch so big it immediately competes with category leader Tesla. Estimated to start at $45,000, the top-level Q4 e-tron Prestige will come with a 82.0-kWh battery and electric motors on each axle that engineers say deliver 300 horsepower and a range of 280 miles on a full charge. Audi’s touch-screen infotainment system, digital gauge readouts and plush suede seats show a commitment to luxury too.

Elon Musk made a splash when he introduced the world to the Cybertruck, the double-take-worthy, all-electric truck that becomes available to consumers in late 2021. If the “Cybertruck vs. Ford F-150” viral video didn’t convince you of the Tesla’s tank-like power, consider that its supercharged battery and top-tier, triple-motor model ($69,000) can tow up to 14,000 pounds and drive an estimated 500+ miles on a single charge. Other than the brand’s oversized touchscreen infotainment system (17-inch display, anyone?), Tesla will outfit the six-seater with a minimalist interior.

Bentley and Porsche previously introduced hybrid editions of their SUV; now it’s Lamborghini’s turn. Later this year, the legendary Italian sports car maker is expected to release an electrified, plug-in version of its $200,000+ Urus super sport-ute. If it’s anything like the standard 2021 models, it will have driver-convenience and safety features such as a heads-up display and blind-spot monitoring, as well as optional park assist and adaptive cruise control. And Lambo won’t shy away from flashy exterior colors—among the Urus’ hues will be bright blues, oranges and greens.

The luxury German carmaker already has a hybrid car in its lineup, but the EQC is Mercedes-Benz’s first under its new EQ badge. The compact SUV starts at under $70,000 and features a pair of lithium-ion-battery-powered engines that MB-USA says will generate 402 horsepower with a range of around 200 miles. Its reported 0-to-60 time is a mere 0.4 seconds off the Tesla Model X’s pace, but Mercedes’ unmatched manufacturing and interior luxury (two 10.25-inch touchscreens and premium sound systems, for starters) should put the EQC alongside its rivals.

When the time is right and all is safe, you won’t have second thoughts about throwing a party. Sure, you’ve had friends over to wine and dine—maybe you’ve even had a large gathering. But undoubtedly you did so with careful considerations. Trust us, the day is approaching when all you think about is showing your guests a good time. In A Home for All Seasons, the second book penned by interior designer and fashionista Danielle Rollins, you’ll discover the Atlanta- and Palm Beach-based author’s secrets and advice for throwing an unbelievable and unforgettable get-together, whether it’s a festive Easter brunch in the backyard or a heart-warming Thanksgiving feast in the dining room. Her insightful words paired with meticulously curated imagery will surely inspire you to start planning your next celebration. While creating a flawless poolside party, seen on the pages here, Rollins focused on a garden motif. The festivities, after all, were held on well-manicured green grass and surrounded by the yard’s lush landscaping. From flatware to floral arrangements, vibrant spring hues popped from every detail and were meant to set a comfortable, less formal vibe—in her eyes, the perfect ambience for a backyard gathering.

They say that a family’s warmth is what makes a house a home, but this home has literal warmth—and light too. Nestled in the mountains of Thousand Oaks, CA, about 40 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this secluded, sun-drenched abode is home to two adults and their three teenagers. The family also owns a new residence in Hawaii, where they spend much of their time, and the carefree island vibes of that vacation getaway inspired them to redesign this West Coast property. The goal was to create a “modern farmhouse” that brought them into the next stage of their lives as parents of teens, with subdued, soothing hues and maximum indooroutdoor entertaining space. The perfect pro for the job was Nicole Hollis, the Bay Area designer who had renovated their Hawaii homestead—and has a known knack for blending indoor spaces into their natural, outdoor environments. This Thousand Oaks project is one of dozens featured in the designer’s first book, Curate Interiors (Rizzoli, 2020), which gives an in-depth look at refined and minimalistic spaces Hollis and company created in city, country and, of course, coastal settings. This SoCal stunner is the perfect combination of function and fashion, of style and serenity—ready for the laughter and light that the family living in it undoubtedly exudes.

HYDE PARK 74

The main floor is open-concept, laid out meticulously and cleverly to meet all of the family’s needs. At the center is a great room anchored by a kitchen, dining room and living room. On either side are “wings,” the first featuring a bar and lounge, a home theater and the three kids’ bedrooms. Built-in wood shelving contrasts the monotone furniture and gold accents in the bar and the theater, both of which beckon homeowners and guests alike to sit (and sip, and enjoy whatever is streaming).

To maintain cohesion, the kitchen features many of the same aesthetic elements seen elsewhere, from the wooden cabinets to the marble countertops/accent wall above the stove. Floor-to-ceiling shelving and a bold black sink are unexpected choices in a butler’s pantry, but they work effortlessly here and add dimension to the clean white lines.

The second “wing” features a master suite to which the Mr. and Mrs. can escape. In the bathroom, a pair of light wood vanities with gold sconces and hardware anchor the soaking tub, set deliberately beneath steel-frame windows that have a view of the yard and the Santa Monica Mountains. The bedroom has the same steel-frame windows, as well as a steel-frame door, and a canopy bed that, while simple, makes a statement.

GOURMET GADGET

A smoking gun like this one from Mitbak is a handheld device that adds a smoky flavor to just about anything, from meats and nuts to cheeses and cocktails.

your smoky secret

Since you can’t in good conscience dine at a restaurant right now and enjoy a meal or cocktail whipped up by a professional, here’s an idea you can apply at home. Achieve a top-notch, Michelin-star-worthy presentation and flavor by finishing off your dish or drink with a portable “smoking gun.” The idea behind this compact yet powerful kitchen tool (this one’s from Mitbak) is to inject a new dimension of flavor into your food without having to fire up the grill. It’s low-maintenance, yet delivers top flavor, and will have your guests convinced you were slaving over the firepit for hours. A natural choice would be to smoke your meat: Poultry, fish, pork and steak all work well with the deepened flavor and softened texture this handheld device will help you produce. But a smoker can also add a woodsiness to cheese, nuts, vegetables, desserts and even soups and dips prepared in a blender. Or, if you really want to get fancy, you can smoke your cocktail to give that

Manhattan or Old Fashioned a serious punch—and a seriously cool mist your guests would think only a pro bartender with swanky equipment could create. So how does it work? You simply put wood chips (that come with the device) in the burn chamber, light it up, plug in the detachable hose and watch the magic happen. The smoker comes equipped with a clear dome, with which you cover the food to help the smoke penetrate it deeply. Choose from three speed settings for light, medium or heavy levels of smokiness. And this bad boy is cordless, so you can take it and spritz smoke on dish to dish as you move around your kitchen. Here’s one kind of smoking you need never give up. That special smokiness factor can give an enchanting flavor boost to your latest concoction for the plate or the glass. And it’s great for igniting conversation—should you choose, that is, to reveal your secret.
