THE JOHN CRAIG
GUIDE
LUXURY
MADE REAL
Luxury, elegance, style. Those words are too often abstractions that mean different things to different people. But to see those words take shape in the physical world, try on an Emanuel Berg shirt. Then you’ll see those lofty concepts become real in the mirror. The brand has become a symbol of exclusivity for its dress shirts. It’s a family company, owned by Jaroslaw and Petra Berg-Szychulda, who select the Italian fabrics and assemble the collections themselves. Emanuel Berg is worn by an elite clientele—one that prefers a perfect fit and a diverse selection—so it’s only natural that you can get it at John Craig. Make luxury, elegance and style come to life in your wardrobe with an Emanuel Berg shirt.
‘MACHO’ IN ITALIAN
Can a clothing line be elegant and masculine at the same time? Can it employ oldschool artisans and yet still have cutting-edge styles? The short answer to both is Baldassari, one of John Craig’s favorite lines of knitwear and sportswear this season. Trends change, but the brand’s overall image remains the same— Baldassari personifies a strong and confident man who exudes modern elegance. In short, macho. The look was born in the petri dish of fashion, Milan, specifically the Brera district. It was there, in the 1970s, that Maurizio Baldassari absorbed the industry savvy that would inspire him to start his own line. This fall, look for his collection at John Craig. Try on Baldassari and wear macho.
A READ FOR SPEED
Whether your first car was a Dodge Viper or a humble Ford sedan, you probably put pedal to the metal once or twice and dreamed of being a Formula One racer. Life’s become more sensible since then, but somewhere deep inside those dreams survive. So take a look at Formula 1: The Impossible Collection (Assouline). In this book, author and former New York Times Formula One reporter Brad Spurgeon describes 100 memorable moments from the previous century that helped catapult F1 to the third spot in popularity (behind the Olympics and World Cup soccer) among the world’s sporting events. With vivid photos, descriptive narratives and insightful interviews, the book highlights races, technological achievements and notable names such as Bruce McLaren, Enzo Ferrari and Michael Schumacher. Consider it the motorsports book to end all books, the winner of the checkered flag.
PINING FOR GREAT DINING EXPERIENCE
Move over, happy hour, and make way for Golden Hour, a daily after-work stretch where cocktails flow for a laid-back-yet-sophisticated experience. That’s the vibe embraced at The Pinery, a fine-dining establishment now open in Orlando. The restaurant itself pays homage to Orlando’s past—it’s named for the former pineapple plantations along Lake Ivanhoe and incorporates the city’s historical architectural elements. But its tribute to the city as well as its scenic setting overlooking the lake and downtown Orlando is bested only by a delicious menu with fresh Florida ingredients. The offerings change according to the season—mains like Florida grouper and Frenched pork chop with delectable honey-roasted sweet potatoes graced a recent menu. And, of course, there’s the Golden Hour options, featuring items like fire-roasted corn fritters, seasonal Florida fish tacos and Cedar Key clams. Great taste for a refined audience: No wonder why we at John Craig love The Pinery so much!

MADE JUST FOR YOU
Discerning men who want the highest quality clothing come to John Craig—with clothing from more than 60 of the world’s best designers on hand, guys are sure to find what they want and need. But for the man who wants a little more, who wants to add a personal touch to the already great garments, there’s John Craig’s made-to-measure program. Here’s how it works: Come into John Craig, where our experts will talk to you about your clothing needs and discuss personal style. Then it’s time to choose your favorite base garment: suits and sportcoats from Kiton, Isaia, Canali, Hickey Freeman, Samuelsohn or John Craig Private Label, for instance, or Emanuel Berg or Eton dress shirts. Then there are more personal choices, like fabric and customized options, including jacket linings, buttons, contrasting lapel thread, functioning button holes and more. Of course, you’ll be measured by one of our well-trained clothing consultants, ensuring that your suit, sportcoat or trousers fit you like, well, a glove. From fitting to delivery, each element of the made-to-measure experience is tailored to you at John Craig. Customization is everything; it’s also a modest investment of time, and, if we may say so ourselves, an excellent deal. The only downside: Once you’ve tried made-to-measure, you may never be able to go back to off-the-rack.
GENTLE WEAR FOR GENTLEMEN
In clothing as in art, the Italian sense of style and artistry is a potent one. Based in the northern Italian city of Brescia, Boglioli is a company that reflects that potency. What defines its offerings? Lightweight garments with a neat cut. Sleek shapes and a palette of versatile, understated hues. Masterful tailoring in luxurious cotton and wool. Leisurely and relaxed, not just for work. Think of Boglioli as “the softer suit.” But while its style is tasteful, polished and sophisticated, it never sacrifices masculinity.
It’s all Italian and all man. If Michelangelo’s David ever got tired of standing around in the buff, he’d wear Boglioli.
A HUE
FOR YOU
If the folks at Pantone can select a design hue of the year—the king of color is celebrating “Ultimate Gray” and the golden “Illuminating” in 2021—the style pros at John Craig recommend a go-to shade for fall. Tobacco is one of the hottest colors in menswear, and it’s taking over essentials like pants and sweaters as well as accessories like belts and ties. This season, why not skip stonecolored pants and add flair with tobacco-dyed denim; or ditch the black jacket and don a sun-baked brown bomber to light up the night? Stop by any John Craig store and let us show you fall’s best garments in this vibrant shade. Every sport relies on star power—LeBron James and Tom Brady are always must-see TV. But today a quieter game is creating stars of its own: chess. Long considered a pursuit for child prodigies and men’s clubs, chess is garnering a new following. Tournament-tested and world-ranked players are taking their games to social media and live-streaming sites, calling “checkmate” while showing off their chess skills and personalities. They also take on ordinary folks on sites like chess.com. You may not buy jerseys as you do for your favorite athletes—instead, you’ll hit the “follow” or “subscribe” button to show support for the top chess players. If you’re wondering whom to follow, here are four top players: Magnus Carlsen (pictured). It’s easy to mistake this 30-yearold Norwegian for an actor, but he’s all business—sometimes ruthlessly so—on the chessboard when the sportcoat comes off. He’s the world’s top-ranked chess player, a grandmaster (GM) and a pretty good competitor in other games as well: Check out some of his sporty shots on Instagram (@magnus_carlsen). Hikaru Nakamura. Born in Japan but raised in the U.S., Nakamura is a top-20-in-the-world player and one of Carlsen’s biggest rivals. He earned the GM title at 15, becoming the youngest American at the time to achieve that feat. Now 33, he competes in international competitions and matches on chess.com and has fans worldwide thanks to his popular Twitch stream and YouTube channel (GMHikaru on both services). Alexandra Botez. This 25-year-old woman FIDE master is a social media celeb thanks to her prowess on the black-andwhite squares. (The initials FIDE stand for the International Chess Federation’s name in French.) Dallas-born, Vancouverraised Botez competes in global tourneys and against opponents on chess.com, and she’s built a massive fan base thanks to her Twitch and YouTube accounts. The channels (BotezLive on both services) follow her and her chessplaying little sister, Andrea, in their daily activities, such as challenging chess hustlers in New York’s Washington Square and Union Square parks. Keti Tsatsalashvili. A grandmaster since 2010, this 29-yearold Tbilisi, Georgia, native conquered the chess world early, capturing plenty of international titles before she turned 18. Since then she’s added chess commentator to her arsenal of roles, hosting championships and titled tournaments across the globe. Like Botez, she runs an active YouTube channel and Twitch account (LetsChessLive), where she streams her online matches from chess.com.
