Forty years! It seems like only yesterday Brenda and I were moving to Baton Rouge to open our first store in Cortana Mall. It was ALL about teamwork—long hours in the store for me while Brenda worked at home, doing payroll and raising our sons. I took a deep breath and here we are now with nine stores and 150 employees. What a journey it’s been! In the very beginning, we never anticipated such remarkable growth. Our dream was to make one store a success. It was all about survival; there was a family to support. We operated by a simple creed: to supply the very best jewelry, provide excellent service and give our customers great values. It was the only way we felt comfortable doing business. Following those guidelines, we worked hard, surrounded ourselves with the best people we could find, and led by example, never asking an associate to do anything we weren’t prepared to do ourselves. As a result, we grew–one store, one opportunity at a time–all the while, staying true to our original values. We still live by this creed, and so do all the remarkable people who make up the Lee Michaels family. It’s what inspires our dedication, fuels our enthusiasm and drives us to go above and beyond for our clients. And it’s why our clients, in turn, make Lee Michaels their first choice when celebrating life’s memorable events. It’s no secret that we value our associates. They are number one. They are the ones who pamper our customers, treat everyone like family and make all feel welcome. Without them, we would not be where we are today. As I hand off some of the day-to-day operations of the business, I take tremendous pleasure and joy in serving as advisor to my three sons and watching as they build on the foundation Brenda and I created. Businesses always evolve, and as we go forward, we will aspire to be the best. With my three sons—Ryan, Scott and Chad—and the rest of the executive team leading the way, I am confident that Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry will continue to prosper. Grounded in the values of yesterday, we will soar toward the promise of tomorrow.

With great appreciation,

Lee and Brenda Berg

“Being a good citizen, a fair merchant and a supportive community member are the values that my father instilled in us and imparted to our business. It is an honor to carry forth the foundation my parents began 40 years ago. We look forward to serving our clients for another 40 years.”

Ryan Berg, President

“Today, my two brothers and I are building upon our parents’ dream. Like them, we want our customers to make Lee Michaels part of their life celebrations. That’s why we will continue to ensure that all customers receive an extraordinary experience from the moment they walk in our doors. Our legacy of bringing integrity, value and service to our clients and our communities is what made us successful for the past 40 years and what will keep us thriving for another 40 years and beyond.”

Scott Berg, President

“It’s all about the client... always has been and always will be. This is what Dad instilled in us and what we strive to attain. Our goal has always been to welcome and appreciate our clients–to treat them like family. That’s why, 40 years later, we are proudly serving second and even third generations of clients and will continue this tradition for generations to come.”

Chad Berg, Executive Vice President

Thank you to our friends, clients and communitites for four memorable decades, from two generations of the Berg family. WISHING YOU AND YOURS A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON.

Q&A

Tell us a little about yourself. I’m a “military brat”– born on Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth. After my dad retired, we settled in San Antonio. During my years in retail, I moved around the country. However, when my mom had a brief illness, I came back home. She’s doing well now but I decided to stay. That’s when I went to work for Lee Michaels. What are your jewelry industry credentials? Lee Michaels encourages higher education. I earned my AJP certification (Accredited Jewelry Professional) to learn the basics of jewelry, colored stones and diamond essentials. Recently, I obtained my RJ (Registered Jeweler) certification from the American Gemological Society. This required more detailed courses on diamonds, including a lab course at the Gemological Institute of America where I learned to grade diamonds. That’s impressive. Are Lee Michaels sales associates also trained? Yes. Within a year, associates at our ABQ Uptown store will have their Accredited Jewelry Professional certification. Plus, we have weekly trainings on brands represented by Lee Michaels. We also invite designers to give in-depth training about their collections. Do you have any favorite designers? Rolex. I love the integrity of the brand, the look, the design— everything Rolex stands for. David Yurman is my favorite silver and gold brand. I love the style, the gemstones, diamonds and the craftsmanship they use. David and wife Sybil are artists and sculptors so they design their collections from that perspective.

LARRY CHENOWETH ALBUQUERQUE STORE MANAGER Ask Larry Chenoweth, manager of Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry in ABQ Uptown, about his new “hometown” of Albuquerque, and his face lights up. “This is the Land of Enchantment. The people here are so welcoming, I felt at home after the first week. I love the climate, the views and sitting outside watching the sun rise and set over the Sandia Mountains. Sometimes, I’ll see a hot air balloon. It’s magical.” A transplant from San Antonio, Larry came to Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry over three years ago with 20-plus years of diverse experience in retail management. Says Ryan Berg, Lee Michaels president, “While he was an assistant manager in our San Antonio market, he represented the family and the business with a high level of professionalism. We are confident he will continue to do so as manager in Albuquerque.” In a recent interview, Larry shared a bit about his life and his passion for the jewelry business.

What’s your favorite David Yurman piece? I like to wear the men’s black diamond cross bracelet. It’s leather with a silver clasp. One of my favorites for women is the Starburst collection. The Yurmans created it to capture the emotions they felt while watching beautiful fireworks over the Eiffel Tower in Paris. How romantic is that? What was your most memorable sale? My first Rolex sale. Everything clicked with the client—product knowledge, caring and confidence came together. It was less about the Rolex and more about the relationship I built with the client–a friendship, a trust. To this day we still are friends and communicate frequently. That is what I love about the jewelry business. I can take my time to get to know my clients and establish a bond with them. What’s unique about Lee Michaels? Our goal is to deliver an extraordinary experience to each client– great values, the finest brands and excellent service. We’re in the celebration business. Let us help you find the perfect way to commemorate your next big event.

Beautiful music! That’s what happened when Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry served as lead sponsor of the Jackson Symphony League luncheon this past May. A major fundraiser for the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, the annual event was staged under a festive tent in front of Lee Michaels, located in Renaissance at Colony Park in Ridgeland, MS. The event featured worldrenowned designer David Yurman as guest of honor. Patrons were greeted with a champagne reception then treated to an elegant lunch, replete with music by the Symphony Orchestra String Quartet and an address by David Yurman. After dining, they were invited into the Lee Michaels store to personally meet David Yurman and view his exquisite collection of jewelry. “The store was filled with David Yurman enthusiasts,” says Tony Sanders, manager of Lee

Michaels’ Jackson, MS location. “It was a terrific afternoon and so wonderful to see our clients interact with Mr. Yurman and get a chance to view some of his one-of-a-kind pieces.” “Speaking for Lee Michaels, we were incredibly honored to have David Yurman visit our store,” says Chad Berg, vice president of Lee Michaels. “To have this world-renowned jewelry designer meet our clients and talk about his exquisite creations was a tremendous compliment to Lee Michaels and a great attraction for the Jackson Symphony League’s fundraiser.” Michelle Alexander, luncheon chairman, expressed her gratitude to Lee Michaels for another year of sponsorship. “Chad Berg and Tony Sanders have been so generous to the Jackson Symphony League. Their support has been invaluable to our goals,” she says.

GATHERINGS

LEE MICHAELS SALUTES PRESIDENT’S CIRCLE MEMBERS. By Karen B. Gibbs

“Our associates come first because they take care of you, our customers.”

32

LEE MICHAELS

LEE BERG

How does an extraordinary company that’s in the business of celebrating special events celebrate its finest associates? Extraordinarily, of course! Since 2002, Lee Michaels has treated those in its elite President’s Circle (associates who’ve excelled in performance and customer service for the year) to an all-expensepaid trip for two to destinations like New York City, the Bahamas, Cozumel, Las Vegas and San Francisco. “Our associates come first because they take care of you, our customers,” says Lee Berg, founder of Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry. During this year’s excursion to Boston, 13 of Lee Michaels’ finest, along with their guests, sampled a bit of everything this historic city had to offer. Michelle Honoré toured MIT, Boston Gardens and Little Italy. Robbie Everitt relished the best lobster roll in Bean Town. Tuoi Hull savored the city’s rich history, and Marshall Loupus visited Revolutionary War battle sites. Ed Collins enjoyed it all but added, “It was awesome just being with co-workers outside the workplace.” Undoubtedly, everyone, including guests, felt like treasured members of the Lee Michaels family. And they should. After all, that’s how they treat their customers, too–oh, yes, they do! Here are just a few examples of the above-and-beyond service representative of this year’s President’s Circle associates.

Tuoi Hull, 13-year associate at Lee Michaels in Shreveport, readily assisted a lady who called from her hospital bed needing Christmas gifts for her family. “I stayed within her budget and selected some lovely gifts we thought they’d like,” says Tuoi. “I had them gift wrapped and waiting for her friend to pick up in time for Christmas Day. Making customers happy is part of my job.” When a great fan of David Yurman jewelry couldn’t make Yurman’s personal appearance and show, Robbie Everitt, five-year veteran with Lee Michaels in Jackson, MS, used his smartphone to give his customer a virtual tour of the event. The lady, who lives in England but shops at Lee Michaels during regular visits to Louisiana, was ecstatic. “She was able to buy several pieces without leaving home,” says Robbie. Fifteen-time President’s Circle member Marshall Loupus, of Lee Michaels in Lafayette, went the extra mile to help a valued client get the broken clasp on her luxury handbag repaired. “We don’t sell purses but I was happy to help,” says Marshall. He located a vendor in New York, shipped the purse and returned it like new to his happy customer. “Helping her was the right thing to do.” Michelle Honoré, seven-year associate at Lee Michaels Baton Rouge Bocage store, provided “jewelry first aid” for a doctor who needed a last-minute gift for his wife. “He wasn’t able to get to the store,” explains Michelle, “so, I gift-wrapped the necklace, picked out a card for his wife and delivered it all to him in time for their anniversary that night.” Another last-minute shopper received help from Ed Collins, 17-year veteran at Lee Michaels Mall of Louisiana store in Baton Rouge. Her son wanted a fine timepiece, instead of a class ring, for his high school ring ceremony. Despite having no time to spare, she asked that the watch be engraved, too. “It made me feel good that she wanted this for her son,” says Ed. “Our team made it happen and both were so happy, she wrote an awesome letter thanking us.”

LEE MICHAELS 33

Having associates who are willing to go above and beyond for customers is something Lee Michaels President Ryan Berg values. “These associates understand how to provide every guest with the extraordinary Lee Michaels experience,” he says. Not surprisingly, the praise goes both ways. During the President’s Circle banquet, associates shared their feelings about working for LMFJ. “This trip made me feel appreciated for my work and effort,” said Michelle Honoré. “Inviting my husband, Dexter, to join me on the trip gave us time to be together and showed me Lee Michaels values family, too.” For Marshall Loupus, it’s all about family– treating clients like family (including three generations of the same family!) and being treated like family by Lee Michaels. “That’s the main reason I enjoy working here. Not to mention we sell the highest quality products in the industry.” Robbie Everitt is impressed with the personal attention and encouragement he’s been given at Lee Michaels, the very company his former employer had put on a pedestal. Tuoi Hull is glad that Lee Michaels is a still family-owned business. “The sons are following in their parents’ footsteps, so Lee Michaels will be here for years to come,” she adds. For Ed Collins, there’s a personal connection. During Hurricane Gustav, Lee called to check on him. “When I told Lee I was looking after my grandmother and we had no power or A/C, he got a room at the Hilton for us. During the 2016 floods, I lost my home and wasn’t responding to phone calls. Concerned, Lee drove to my house, embraced me and said, ‘We’re gonna get through this,’ and we did. Lee and his family genuinely care.” Truly caring is what Lee Michaels is all about. Come by and see for yourself. An extraordinary experience awaits you in every store because, at Lee Michaels, we treasure those who treasure you.

“These associates understand how to provide every guest with the extraordinary Lee Michaels experience.” RYAN BERG

allowing the wearer to easily increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm for additional comfort. Datejust 36 watches now utilize calibre 3235, a consummate demonstration of Rolex technology offering fundamental gains in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, convenience and reliability. It incorporates the Chronergy escapement patented by Rolex, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, this escapement is insensitive to magnetic interference. An optimized blue Parachrom hairspring is fitted to the oscillator, the true heart of the watch. Manufactured by Rolex in an exclusive paramagnetic alloy, it is up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. Calibre 3235 is equipped with a self-winding module via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its new barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3235 extends to approximately 70 hours. A waterproof Oyster case provides optimum protection for the Datejust 36’s highprecision movement. Like all Rolex watches, the new-generation Datejust 31 and 36 models carry the Superlative Chronometer certification. This exclusive designation testifies that each watch has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, which exceed watchmaking norms and standards. The certification applies to the fully assembled watch (after casing the movement), guaranteeing superlative performance in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer after casing is of the order of −2 /+2 seconds per day, or more than twice that required of an official chronometer. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee. Thanks to its timeless functions and aesthetics, the Rolex Datejust will never go out of fashion. Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 with white mother-of-pearl dial, 45 brilliant-cut diamonds, President bracelet in 18K yellow gold, scratchresistant sapphire crystal with Cyclops lens over date and 55-hour power reserve. Waterproof to 100 meters; Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 with champagne-color sunray finish dial, 10 diamonds in 18K yellow gold settings, Oyster bracelet in Yellow Rolesor, scratchresistant sapphire crystal with Cyclops lens over date and 70-hour power reserve. Waterproof to 100 meters.

LEE MICHAELS

Launched in 1945, the Rolex Datejust was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock on the dial, consolidating all the major innovations that Rolex had contributed to modern watchmaking until that point. Its style has spanned eras while still retaining the enduring codes that make it one of the most recognizable watches of today. In 2018 Rolex introduced a new generation of the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31, with redesigned case sides and lugs. Available in 18K white, yellow or Everose gold, the models are equipped for the first time with calibre 2236, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Insensitive to magnetic fields, its silicon Syloxi hairspring provides great stability in the face of temperature variations and remains up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. Calibre 2236 is equipped with a self-winding module via a Perpetual rotor and offers a power reserve of approximately 55 hours. The new Datejust 31 watches are fitted on President bracelets, benefiting from a concealed attachment system and ensuring seamless visual continuity between the bracelet and the case. Each also has a concealed folding Crownclasp and includes ceramic inserts inside the links to enhance flexibility and longevity. Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 also has been relaunched this year in both Everose Rolesor (combining Oystersteel and 18-karat Everose gold) and yellow Rolesor (combining Oystersteel and 18-karat yellow gold) versions, each available with a large selection of dials. Rolesor, the combination of gold and steel on a Rolex watch, has been a signature feature of the brand since 1933, when the name was registered. It is an auspicious meeting of two metals: one noble and precious, attractive for its lustre and stability, the other highly resistant, known for its strength and reliability. All of these qualities perfectly mirror the elegance and performance that come together in a Rolex watch. On the Rolesor versions of the new Datejust 36, the bezel, winding crown and center bracelet links are in 18-karat gold (Everose or yellow), while the case and the outer links of the bracelet are in Oystersteel. Available on Oyster or Jubilee bracelets, they also are equipped with an Oysterclasp and include the Easylink rapid extension system (patented by Rolex in 1996),

HONORING ITS FEROCIOUS FOREBEARS, THE MERCEDES-BENZ AMG SL65 ROADSTER WILL MOVE YOU, THRILL YOU—AND MASSAGE YOU, TOO.

Drivers who experience the joy of racing in a sporty Mercedes-Benz AMG SL65 convertible owe a nod of gratitude to a couple of speed-obsessed Germans. In the 1960s, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher were young engineers working on the 300 SE racing engine at Daimler-Benz when the company discontinued all motorsports activities. But the pair had an unrelenting passion for speed and a vision for modeling road vehicles after racing cars. In 1967, they left Daimler-Benz to found Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach, or AMG. The two tirelessly tinkered with valves and pistons as an independent engineering firm specializing in performance improvements for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. After a successful arrangement by which AMG upgrades were available and serviceable through selected Mercedes-Benz dealers worldwide, in 1993, the two firms unveiled the C36 AMG, their first jointly developed vehicle. Today the engineering firm is owned by the German automaker and more than 50 Mercedes–AMG performance models have hit the streets. In 2018, the AMG SL65 extends the blissful union between AMG’s muscular engineering and Mercedes-Benz’s lavish design. One of the most powerful in its class, this roadster packs a punch with a 6.0-liter AMG V-12 biturbo engine that pumps out 621 horsepower. Able to go 0–60 in just 3.9 seconds, this model reaches its top speed of 186 mph in what seems like the blink of an eye. Mercedes-Benz elevates the roadster experience with Active Body Control technology. The suspension’s sensors and electronically controlled hydraulics

respond to the car’s grip in milliseconds. An automatic four-wheel level control lowers the vehicle as its speed increases to enhance aerodynamics and stability. The height also can be raised for bumpy roads or steep climbs. Like its SL forerunners, the 2018 AMG SL65 provides as much swank as it does soup. The panoramic sunroof creates an open-air feeling even when the coupe is closed. The high-tech glass controls exposure to harmful UV and infrared rays from the sun while keeping the cabin of the vehicle cool. The roof ’s electrochromatic technology automatically changes the glass from transparent to opaque based on the amount of thermal energy entering the cabin. When drivers are ready to feel the wind in their hair, the SL can be transformed to an open roadster in less than 20 seconds, even while traveling up to 25 mph. The car has 12-way power seats with memory, which are upholstered in Nappa leather. The seats also are outfitted with a neck-level heating system, a massage feature to help prevent fatigue on long trips, and adjustable lumbar, side bolsters and shoulder supports for tailored comfort. Passionate music fans will rejoice after switching on a BeoSound system designed by Bang & Olufsen engineers. Even when the wind is whipping about the cabin, 12 active speakers and 900 watts of musical power create ideal sound. With its twin-turbo V-12 muscle and superb amenities, this innovative and powerful roadster brings Aufrecht and Melcher’s passion for motorsports and design into a wide-awake 2019.

OUR “THROWAWAY” CULTURE HASN’T TOUCHED PATEK PHILIPPE. IT WILL STILL FIX ANY OF ITS WATCHES DATING BACK TO THE THIRD YEAR OF VICTORIA’S REIGN, AS ITS TECHNICAL TRAINING MANAGER EXPLAINS. By Karen Alberg Grossman

42

LEE MICHAELS

We were wondering about the future of watchmaking and how a company dared promise to fix any of its watches. So we caught up with David Bonilla, Patek Philippe’s technical training manager, for a chat. How did your watchmaking career begin? In 2005 I attended a WOSTEP (Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Program) in Secaucus, N.J. I graduated in 2007 and promptly found a job at Swatch Group’s New Jersey after-sales facility. I soon moved to the new Omega Boutique on Fifth Avenue, servicing products and interacting with clients. In 2010 came an opportunity

year from those seeking watchmaking jobs, but finding the right talent is challenging, not just for Patek Philippe but for the industry worldwide. We realized several years ago that to maintain our watches and to ensure a strong follow-up support structure, we needed to start training and teaching in-house. So in 2013 we created the first Patek Philippe Institute in Shanghai. This program differs from other two-year watchmaking schools in two ways. First, toward the end each student is taught to service Patek Philippe quartz and mechanical calibers. Second, after finishing the program, students must go to Geneva to complete a four-week training. If they pass, they are certified to work on Patek Philippe watches. Is it true that you will service and repair all Patek watches ever made? Yes. Even watches that date back to 1839. It’s our commitment to our clients. How is that possible? In Geneva we have a separate center dedicated to restoration. There we still maintain many of the original pieces of equipment with which these early watches were made. We pride ourselves on our ability to recreate individual parts if necessary. The time frame may be longer than with a normal repair, but the watch will be returned to the client

to work with Patek Philippe at its main office in Rockefeller Center. After five years there working as a watchmaker, I was offered the chance to manage the service center. Your watch repair professionals are known for their exceptional skills. How many do you have and how do you find and train them? At The Henri Stern Watch Agency in New York City, we have 39 highly qualified individuals who handle each step of the repair process; 31 are watchmakers who do the repair, restoration and regulation of the mechanical movements of our clients’ watches. Case repairs are undertaken by four highly trained polishers, who restore cases and bracelets to their original luster. Two watchmakers are reserved for quick service work, so that clients who visit our New York office can have a strap changed, a bracelet adjusted or a battery replaced on the spot. We also have two individuals who perform quality control on all the work done on each watch. Admittedly, we have a difficult time finding qualified and capable people to work at this high level of watchmaking. We get many resumes throughout the

just as beautiful as the day it came out of the showroom. How long does the average repair take? It varies depending on several factors, including the rarity and complexity of the watch and whether it’s a restoration or service to a modern piece. Have you ever had watches that you couldn’t fix? Here, yes. We’ve received timepieces that were crushed or were so fused together by rust that we were unable to fix them locally. We usually refer these especially difficult cases to the factory where they have the machinery and knowledge to complete the repairs. What qualities do you look for when you hire? The No. 1 trait is commitment. Of course, all candidates are given a practical exam and are thoroughly interviewed, but we’re looking for highly skilled individuals who will be committed to the company, not just for years of service, but with genuine passion for their work. It’s a lot to ask for, but I believe that if we don’t search for individuals with such commitment, we’ll never deliver on our promise to produce the finest watch money can buy. Are there enough young people these days who want to be watchmakers? Yes, I would say there’s more interest today in watchmaking among young people than there used to be. I attribute that to social media and various horological societies that keep alive the passion for our craft. So I think the burden is now on the watchmaking industry to nurture and develop this interest among young people. We learned lessons from the quartz crisis of the 1970s and early ’80’s, when the industry lost a lot of talent and risked losing mechanical know-how. We’re on steadier footing now, but we need to better promote the craft of watchmaking in order to pass the baton to a future generation. What is the most rewarding part of your job? Helping to provide the highest level of service for all our clients. I firmly believe in strong commitment to service; nothing is more rewarding than restoring our timepieces for our clients’ wearing pleasure. The toughest or most stressful part? Managing each aspect of the repair process. When a watch comes in for service, each department must work perfectly in sync with the others. If there’s even a small mismatch, it can cause issues for the whole repair process. Bottom line, what would you say distinguishes a Patek Philippe watch from the competition? Passion and commitment. In everything we create there’s a high level of passion, even in the smallest unseen details found in our mechanical watches. We back up that passion with a strong commitment to service and the knowledge to ensure that our watches will perform perfectly for many years to come.

Elvis Presley’s diamond timepiece (below right) sold in May 2018 for $1.8 million, far surpassing estimates of $52,900 to $106,000. Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona (above) set the record for a timepiece sold at auction when it garnered $17.8 million in October 2017.

ACC.LEE.Auctions.indd 48

You’ve undoubtedly seen the headlines of late: “Paul Newman’s Paul Newman fetches $17.8 million at auction” or “Elvis Presley’s Omega sells for a record $1.8 million.” While these results are not exactly commonplace, they do open the debate on what makes a watch valuable. Some say that provenance (who owned it and the stories behind it) and condition/ originality are key. As we see it, there are three major watch auction houses at the moment: Phillips, Christie’s and Sotheby’s. Keep in mind that the auction scene is a microcosm of a much larger industry. Over the last three years, we’ve noticed two distinct pillars emerge within the watch industry: highly desirable modern references (the Rolex Daytona, Patek Philippe Nautilus and more) followed by vintage pieces. The vintage market has positively exploded, forcing even the most novice of collectors to look again at that watch his grandfather gave him. In some (rare) cases, he’ll find a diamond in the rough, and it can be worth a considerable deal of money.

What does this all mean for collectors? Well, sadly, the price you’ll pay for your next vintage watch will assuredly be higher. Bolstered by auction houses and vintage dealers, we’ve seen prices rise over 300 percent in some cases. But fear not: Deals are still out there; you just need to know where to look. Form a relationship with your retailer and get to know the person who curates the store’s vintage watch selection. He or she can help you find something you love within your budget. If raising your paddle in a room full of strangers isn’t your scene, there’s no shame in sticking to modern timepieces. There have been some incredible watches produced over the last few years. Have a look at the Tudor Black Bay GMT, Patek Philippe Calatrava and the Rolex Explorer, all of which should be available at your local authorized retailer and are likely to retain or gain value as time goes on. in plain sight IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN MAGIC, MAYBE YOU JUST HAVEN’T DONNED THE SAMSUNG ODYSSEY WINDOWS “MIXED REALITY” HEADSET YET.

Want to roam the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu? Dive from a cliff in Moab, Utah? Battle gladiators in Rome’s Colosseum? Oh, and you say you’d rather not leave your rec room? VR may be for you. VR, of course, is virtual reality, the technology that can take you almost anywhere—in sensory terms—and into almost any situation. It’s big for games, sure, but it’s also beginning to poke a disconcerting elbow into the world of work, where, as one website says, people can do “daily computing tasks while fully immersed in a 3D space.” You put on a headset, and suddenly you’re in a different environment—yet one that responds to your real-world commands. One of the VR devices drawing buzz in 2018 is the Samsung HMD (that stands for “head-mounted displays”) Odyssey Windows “Mixed Reality” headset with motion controllers. The Odyssey operates on the Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality platform, which was introduced in October 2017. (Mixed reality is a type of VR in which computergenerated content and real-world content can react to each other in real time.) With the Odyssey headset you can explore exotic locales and settings. And a next-level social media network, vTime, connects users from around the world—or around the block—in engaging virtual environments, such as cozy campfires, mountain cliffs and glacier tops. While those snowy mountains may be virtual, you can get fit for real. There are several available routines for people looking to buff up using a VR platform, including BOXVR virtual gym, the Bitslap HIIT (highintensity interval training) app and the MoveStudio dance and cardio app. (If you decide to sweat with VR, use caution. The Odyssey does not prevent you from walking into walls.) The Odyssey brings users into the next phase of entertainment. Mixed reality allows users to drop into the middle of a documentary about Syria, sail the America’s Cup with a real race team or watch the latest episode of This is Us in a virtual theater. The built-in headset has 360-degree sound, giving virtual voices and ambient noises depth and distance. The Odyssey and the Windows Mixed Reality platform can be installed in compatible devices in minutes. And, with a price below $500, this device is a way for VR newbies to check out the world of augmented reality. Can you see it now?

DESIGNER

DAVID YURMAN OFFERS MODERN UPDATES TO HIS SELECTION OF MEN’S WEDDING BANDS.

LEE MICHAELS

David Yurman’s men’s bands range from classic to extremely expressive, executed in both precious and innovative metals, including black titanium, forged carbon and colored diamonds. The collection was created to address the lack of options on the market outside of the classic white- and yellow-gold simple bands. According to the David Yurman design team, it has become increasingly important to grooms to have different styles to choose from so they can find what fits their personalities. Men are now buying multiple bands rather than just one, which better allows them to express themselves and adapt to changing occasions and circumstances.

If ever you wanted to plan an affair to remember, it’s your wedding. Bronson van Wyck’s tips will help you plan the celebration of a lifetime – and one your guests will never forget. Do sweat the small stuff. Well, just a few small things. While you shouldn’t stress about making your entire wedding perfect, spend time on a few special touches that make your big day really feel like your day. “Sometimes the subtle details are the ones that set the tone and say that a host has thought about things,” van Wyck told One Kings Lane. What those details are depends on your personal taste, but some of van Wyck’s favorites include “an escort card table [that] was an old potting table lined with wildflowers and simple cards that were each hand tied with lavender. The guests’ very first impression of the ceremony on a warm summer day was the subtle, clean scent of lavender in the air,” he told Armarium. And his favorite dinner setup? “On the back lawn of a historic villa in Tuscany. It was so simple, with two long tables, a slew of candles, potted herbs and flowers, and bistro lights overhead. I loved the drama and the intimacy of seating 400 guests at only two tables.” The touches that truly matter to you will be part of what you remember most years later. Whimsical, personal details. At a party he threw for Coach, van Wyck and team incorporated dinosaurs, the brand’s new favorite animal, throughout the event: Dinosaur topiaries with floral leis greeted guests waiting for drinks at the bar, while colorful dino pins were included in the treats for partygoers to take home. Have fun with your own quirky details that make you and your partner special. continued...

ACC.LEE.WeddingsVanWyck3.indd 58

For example, van Wyck planned a wedding for an ultra-bold couple who wanted red everything: “From the flowers to the draped ceiling to luxurious tablecloths and even the guests’ attire, the bride’s favorite color cocooned their guests in every way…. It’s fun to work with a color palette that is so simple yet so dramatic,” van Wyck said. Don’t forget this is your day – and one that’s meant to be a joyous celebration! “When you’re planning a wedding, there’s the sacred part of it, which is the relationship between the two people who are coming together,” van Wyck explained to Business Insider. “But there’s also the aspect of throwing just a knock-down party, and that can be fun.” Create opportunities for guests to enjoy special moments. No doubt you’ve already planned to keep your guests well fed (and well drunk!). But van Wyck recommends taking it a step further. “You also have a responsibility to their emotional well-being—what do they need in addition to a drink in their hand? Think about how you put people together. Create moments where guests flirt and get to know each other,” van Wyck told Barneys. One of his top tips for creating intimacy is “a sparklers moment. It doesn’t seem to get old for me. It’s a fun surprise for guests young to old, and it brings the group together,” he told Armarium. “Two guests might share and hold one together or help each other light them just in the nick of time.” Plus, he added, the glow of a sparkler creates a perfect nighttime photo op. “When your friends and family can walk away from the night with a memory or a new friend,” van Wyck says, “they will treasure that long after the social media post has moved down the feed.”

Known as the “Money Isles” since the 2nd century, the Maldives (officially the Republic of Maldives) is a jet-set destination synonymous with exotic luxury. John Legend proposed to Chrissy Teigen here because it’s so romantic. The Beckhams spend family vacations here because it’s so posh. Prince William and Kate Middleton had a sexy getaway here because the string of luminescent islands is so secluded. Celebrities such as Madonna, Naomie Harris and Michael Phelps flock to this island nation because of the azure waters and sugar-white sand beaches. Located in the Indian Ocean southwest of India, the Maldives strikes a balance between relaxation and adventure while providing visitors with a sense that they are uncovering one of nature’s hidden gems without sacrificing modern comfort. The 26 atolls comprise 1,192 small islands, of which 202 are inhabited, and 90 resort islands offer unspoiled nature and unrivaled privacy. The Maldives’ name is derived from the Sanskrit term for “garland of islands.” Consisting of 99

percent water, this archipelago is home to a spectacular array of marine life. There are extensive coral reefs, and scuba diving is a huge draw for experts and beginners, offering the opportunity to get up close to sea turtles, eagle rays, whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, eels, puffers, lobsters, clams and a wide variety of colorful fish. Divers can even go on a guided fluorescent night dive or snorkel and see coral and other organisms glow in neon colors as if they were under a black light. Tourists can experience the surreal when they swim with whale sharks, one of the world’s largest mammals, at Manta Point. For visitors who prefer to keep their heads above water, chartering a fishing vessel and taking a traditional dhoni boat to watch dolphins frolic at sunset are hard-to-resist options, too. The islands can be a spiritual place for those looking to de-stress. The Maldives’ culture reflects a fusion of Buddhism and Islam that dates back to 300 B.C. Many resorts offer sunrise and sunset yoga, wellness retreats and Ayurveda-influenced spa treatments. After the sun goes down, Maldives has stunning views of the night sky. Because it’s located just above the Equator, both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres’ stars are visible. While a blanket on the beach can make for cozy stargazing, visitors can see the stars up close with a powerful telescope located at Anantara Kihavah’s open-air observatory and cocktail bar. Not all visitors to Maldives are on a pilgrimage to commune with nature. Some are there for the party. At Finolhu, a resort in Baa Atoll,

pleasure seekers rejoice in a beach-party vibe that features internationally acclaimed DJs and three-day long festivals hosted throughout the year. So, are there accommodations that justify the 20-plus hour flight from the U.S.? That’d be a yes. Ranked on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List for 2018, the Cheval Blanc Randheli resort in the northwestern Maldives is a pearl of opulence. Developed by LVMH Hotel Management and designed by Jean-Michel Gathy, it has 45 villas, some over water with reef access right outside the door. Each has its own pool stretching the full width of the villa; hammocks, sun lounges and day beds adorn the decks, with sunken seating areas for room-service dining. Guests who fancy a game of tennis can hop aboard a five-minute boat ride to Maakhurandhoo Island. Built in accordance with Australian Open standards, these courts have hosted Roger Federer. Amilla Fushi, located on Baa Atoll, is all glitz and glam, with stark white architecture, sculptural furniture, oversized sofas and a fabulous pool. Outfitted with enormous daybeds, large soaking tubs, two showers and suites of entertainment, individual villas also include private pools and a katheeb (butler) to ensure that a guest’s every whim is attended to. Families can have a blast with unlimited watersports, creative children’s menus and a kids’ club stocked with amenities to engage youngsters from toddlers to teens. For guests who want to be the one and only party on the island, the Four Seasons Private Island at Voavah is the choice. Designed to accommodate parties of up to 22, travelers can expect total personalization from the moment they touch down by seaplane. The remote location does not compromise on access to upscale amenities. Guests have 24/7 use of a 62-

foot yacht, which can be taken out for a sunset cruise, to the best dive spots or to spend an overnight afloat in one of the cabins. The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli resort is a spa lover’s nirvana. Set on the private island of Vommuli, it has 77 palatial villas spread across 23 acres dense with palms and pandani. At the island’s center, a fitness and recreation complex employs a naturopathic doctor who administers acupuncture. And before it’s time to enjoy dinner at Alba, the property’s Mediterranean restaurant, guests can clean up with a manicure and blow-dry at the on-site salon. When they’ve had enough relaxation, a concierge can organize a number of excursions, such as a dolphin cruise, private island picnics and big-game fishing. For guests who don’t want to sacrifice environmentally sustainable practices or luxury, Soneva Jani, located on Noonu Atoll, is worth a stay. The resort is built across three small islands encircling a lagoon. The biggest island is 150 acres and has 32 villas, two restaurants serving organic food prepared by Michelin-starred guest chefs, a scuba and watersports center and an Ayurvedic spa. Every villa is personalized with choice of pillow type as well as fragrance: bergamot, lemongrass, orange or peppermint. Villas also are stocked with a guest’s favorite beverages and cocktails. While the Maldives offers visitors a wealth of experiences, the islands may be best enjoyed by listening to the ocean lap against the shore, letting your toes sink into the sand and sipping a cool drink while you do absolutely nothing at all.

SPIRITS

18: A very good year YES, IT’S 2018, AND IN THE WORLD OF SPIRITS, YOU’LL FIND IT HARD TO PASS UP THE TASTE OF WELL-AGED LIQUOR. SO HERE ARE FIVE—EACH 18 YEARS OLD— THAT WILL HIT THE SPOT. What’s in a number? In Judaism, there’s a belief that 18 is lucky, while the same number is associated with abundance and wealth in Chinese folklore. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a hold of and sip one (or all) of these under-the-radar spirits. They might not result in riches, but we know you’ll treasure their tastes.

The story behind this rum’s name is almost as rich as the liquor itself. “Kirk and Sweeney” was the name of a wooden schooner used to smuggle rum from the Caribbean to the United States during Prohibition. Luckily, connoisseurs today don’t have to wait as long for a taste of the copper-colored rum. The liquor is crafted from raw sugarcane and exudes the aroma of dried fruits, hints of honey and warm vanilla.

After traditional aging in oak casks and additional aging in port barrels, just 800 bottles are available of this single cask Gelas Bas-Armagnac. In the mouth, this brandy expresses notes of crystallized clementine, candied apple and lemon, and a hint of smooth blackberry cream. The distinct aromas of caramel, toasted oak and vanilla create a pleasant experience on the nose.

They grow up so fast! And this Scotch whisky is especially mature for its age, thanks to the watchful eyes and patience of Glenfiddich’s master distillers. They individually number each bottle and supervise the aging to ensure proper maturation. From its inception to formative years, Glenfiddich whisky undergoes an intense marrying period so its fruity and rich oak flavors can intertwine and fully develop.

This straight rye whiskey is the oldest release of Lock Stock & Barrel to date—making it quite the coveted craft liquor. It is a robust cut whiskey, having been unfiltered after its distillation. The aging process tames its spicy overtones and brings out hints of candied ginger, vanilla and cherry. And despite its high proof, this rye is smooth enough to be enjoyed without ice.

Fuenteseca Reserva tequila was aged for six years in Atotonilco El Alto before spending 12 years aging in El Chapingo. It is free of the artificial coloring and flavors now found in some añejo tequilas on the market. The natural process allows the liquor to develop its authentic gold coloring, creamy vanilla taste and palate-pleasing cedar and sandalwood undertones.
