Building a CONNECTION

ROLEX believes great watches and great architecture go hand in hand.

D

esign and utility are hallmarks of extraordinary buildings— and of fine timepieces. And Rolex believes the creative process—imagination, technical innovation and the best use of form and space—used to design great buildings should also be used to create great timepieces. Such a connection befits Rolex’s status as the Exclusive Partner and Timepiece of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (which runs through November 25). This marks the third time since 2014 that Rolex has supported the world’s biggest and most important forum for architectural progress and debate, which contributes to building better living and working environments around the world. The theme of this year’s exhibition is “Freespace,” which fits perfectly with Rolex’s sensibility. “We are very enthusiastic about this year’s theme, which is based on a deep sense of humanity and an emphasis on how architecture contributes to the quality of daily life,” says Arnaud Boetsch, director of communication and image at Rolex SA. “Contributing to society is important for Rolex, which has always held a fundamental belief in the power of individuals to achieve great things, including great architecture.” The creative relationship between architecture and the design of Rolex timepieces is captured in the new Rolex Pavilion, constructed to celebrate the current edition of the International Architecture Exhibition and designed by eminent British architect Sir David Chipperfield and his protégé in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé program, Swiss architect Simon Kretz. The pavilion’s flat roof and end walls give rise to a large, lightweight structure, whose long walls are formed with angular pleats of bronze, anodized metal and glass. Best of all, they were inspired by the uniquely fluted bezel of an Oyster Perpetual Day-Date watch, which has been an iconic timepiece since its first appearance in 1945. The Swiss-based timepiece maker’s association with outstanding architecture started 60 years ago when the company began to develop connections with some of the world’s most acclaimed architects to design its buildings. Pritzker Prize winner Kazuyo Sejima, co-principal of the Japanese practice SANAA, was commissioned by École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne to design the Rolex Learning Center. Renowned Japanese architects Fumihiko Maki and Kengo Kuma designed Rolex service and sales centers in Tokyo and Dallas, respectively, and the late, great American post-modern architect Michael Graves designed Rolex’s Watch Technicum in Pennsylvania. It’s a relationship that continues to tell a story.

Clockwise from top: Rolex’s watchmaking school in Pennsylvania; the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. designed by Rolex architecture mentor Sir David Adjaye; Chipperfield and Kretz’s pavilion design for the 16th International Architecture Exhibition; Rolex’s new building in Dallas designed by Kengo Kuma; the Rolex Yellow Rolesor Datejust 41, $12,050.

interview

Keeping TIME FOREVER

Our “throwaway” culture hasn’t touched PATEK PHILIPPE. It will still fix any of its watches dating back to the third year of Queen Victoria’s reign, as its technical training manager explains.

W

e were wondering about the future of watchmaking and how a company dared to promise it would maintain its timepieces through the centuries. David Bonilla, Patek Philippe’s technical training manager, explains. Your watch repair professionals are known for their exceptional skills. How many do you have and how do you find and train them? At The Henri Stern Watch Agency in New York City, we have 39 highly qualified individuals who handle each step of the repair process; 31 are watchmakers who do the repair, restoration and regulation of the mechanical movements of our clients’ watches. Case repairs are undertaken by four highly trained polishers who restore cases and bracelets to their original luster.

Two watchmakers are reserved for quick service work, and two individuals perform quality control on all the work done on each watch. Admittedly, we have a difficult time finding qualified and capable people to work at this high level of watchmaking. We get many resumes throughout the year from those seeking watchmaking jobs, but finding the right talent is challenging, not just for Patek Philippe but for the industry worldwide. We realized several years ago that to maintain our watches and to ensure a strong follow-up support structure, we needed to start training and teaching in-house. So in 2013 we created the first Patek Philippe Institute in Shanghai. This program differs from other two-year watchmaking schools in two ways. First, toward the end, each student is taught to service Patek Philippe quartz and mechanical calibers. Second, after finishing the program, students must go to Geneva to complete a fourweek training. If they pass, they are certified to work on Patek Philippe watches.

Is it true that you will service and repair any Patek Philippe watch ever made? Yes. Even watches that date back to 1839. It’s our commitment to our clients. How is that possible? In Geneva, we have a separate center dedicated to restoration. There, we still maintain many of the original pieces of equipment with which these early watches were made. We pride ourselves on our ability to recreate individual parts if necessary. The time frame may be longer than with a normal repair, but the watch will be returned to the client just as beautiful as the day it came out of the showroom. How long does the average repair take? It varies depending on several factors, including the rarity and complexity of the watch and whether it’s a restoration or service to a modern piece. What qualities do you look for when you hire? The number one trait is commitment. Of course, all candidates are given a practical exam and are thoroughly interviewed, but we’re looking for highly skilled individuals who will be committed to the

company, not just for years of service, but with genuine passion for their work. It’s a lot to ask for, but I believe that if we don’t search for individuals with such commitment, we’ll never deliver on our promise to produce the finest watch money can buy. What is the most rewarding part of your job? Helping to provide the highest level of service for all our clients. I firmly believe in strong commitment to service; nothing is more rewarding than restoring our timepieces for our clients’ wearing pleasure. The toughest or most stressful part? Managing each aspect of the repair process. When a watch comes in for service, each department must work perfectly in sync with the others. If there’s even a small mismatch, it can cause issues for the whole process. What distinguishes a Patek Philippe watch from the competition? Passion and commitment. In everything we create there’s a high level of passion, even in the smallest unseen details found in our mechanical watches. We back up that passion with the knowledge to ensure that our watches will perform perfectly for many years to come. BRILLIANCE IN BLOOM CHANEL’S additions to its High Jewelry and timepiece collections combine timeless beauty with 21st-century innovation.

W

hen it comes to combining innovation, beauty and timeless style, no one incorporates these elements into new pieces as smartly as Chanel. And it’s not just a single collection that receives this thoughtful treatment; each of the elements is found across the storied house’s many lines. Case in point: the recently released Code Coco watch. At first glance, it looks like a quilted bracelet that sparkles around the wrist. The clasp design echoes the company’s famed quilted 2.55 bag, which was created by Mademoiselle Chanel in February 1955. Between two watch hands, a diamond subtly shines on a black dial. Respecting traditions but with contemporary irreverence, the Code Coco watch is discreet and toes the line between a jewelry piece and a watch. Chanel’s timeless style is also reflected in the new Café Society High Jewelry. It was conceived as a celebration of Paris in the famed era between the two world wars, a time when the city was populated by the brightest, most talented and artistic men and women. The Broadway set traces a pure line of squares, rectangles and diamond shapes in a stroke of onyx. The Symphony theme arranges a sparkling composition of light, both sensual and controlled, around a play of different diamond cuts. The Charleston pieces are choreographed in a syncopating and binary rhythm that alternates

square medallions and fluid fringes of diamonds. With the Bubbles pieces, onyx squares sit flatly and randomly on circular compositions and add a tension to the movement of geometry. Featuring white gold, black spinels and diamonds, the Jazz set unfolds in pure and architectural marquetrywork. Smoking plays out in a frieze of diamonds and rock crystal, its scalloped squares secured by rings of light. Sunrise is a cut-up of gold sunrays outlined with red lacquer, punctuated here and there with diamonds. The striking Café Society pendant vibrates in an interlacing of primary colors, as sapphires, garnets and spinels feature like light airy mobiles. Meanwhile, sautoirs, plastrons, brooches and headpieces in the collection share a creative audacity that is a Chanel trademark. Finally, the other new additions to the Jardin de Camélias High Jewelry collection reinterpret Chanel’s iconic flower—introduced in 1923— with a range of exceptional pieces featuring an extraordinary garden of diamonds, gems (including colored sapphires, Mandarin garnets, rubelites and tourmalines) and pearls in which the rarest camelias open up into full, resplendent bloom. These necklaces, earrings, bracelets, cuffs, watches, brooches and rings all feature dramatic proportions that reflect the sumptuous femininity that has made Chanel a worldwide favorite for nearly a century.

COLOR AND SHINE

Metals and gems merge beautifully in VAN CLEEF & ARPELS’ new Perlée pieces.

V

an Cleef & Arpels’ Perlée collection, most notable for its use of gold beads, debuted in 2008. Since then, this ultrafeminine, gorgeous grouping has expanded, not just by adding hard stones and diamonds, but also by growing to include necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pendants and rings. Now the Perlée collection includes the Couleurs jewelry line, featuring bracelets that boast brightly hued hard stones and diamonds, resulting in joyful creations that shine in varied tones. In the spirit of the beloved Van Cleef & Arpels Between the Finger Ring, three new bracelets display diverse harmonies of color. Diamonds and cabochons of hard stones are placed opposite on an open shank, exhibiting an original design. Yellow gold complements the singular beauty of malachite; white gold accents the glow of turquoise; and the warmth of pink gold echoes the radiant hue of carnelian. Each bracelet is made up of a multitude of delicate, shimmering beads that uphold the spirit of the collection. As would be expected, Perlée jewelry remains faithful to the tradition of excellence of the maison, with each detail being carefully studied. Each bead is reworked by hand and then polished to bring out its characteristic gleam. On open bracelets, the hinge becomes imperceptible. The inner surface is polished using the mirror technique dear to Van Cleef & Arpels. The diamonds and stones are selected according to the maison’s stringent criteria. Malachite draws its poetic spirit from the regular streaks running across its surface, while turquoise stands out for its opaque blue color, at once intense and uniform. Carnelian is chosen for the consistency of its red-orange tone, which is further enhanced by polishing. The bracelets combine beautifully with the rings, pendants and earrings in the collection, sharing the same interplay between materials and golden beads. Or, they can be stacked with Van Cleef & Arpels’ Perlée diamond bracelets in yellow, pink or white gold. These gorgeous creations feature a row of round diamonds surrounded by two rows of gold beads. Worn in twos or threes, they allow for limitless variations. And thanks to their discreet clasp and a new choice of sizes, the bracelets can grace any wrist with finesse.

Visit London Jewelers’ Americana Manhasset location to experience Van Cleef & Arpels’ Perlée collection.

Animal

MAGNETISM

For decades, CARTIER’s elegant Panthère collection has been driving collectors wild.

T

he importance of the wildcat to Louis Cartier was cemented when he gave Jeanne Toussaint, his lover and a Parisian style icon in her own right, the nickname “La Panthère.” As Cartier’s creative director from 1933 until the 1970s, Toussaint often incorporated the panther motif, which she fine-tuned with the help of Peter Lemarchand, a designer who joined the firm in 1927. The singular feline appears on some of Cartier’s most stunning timepieces, forms the shapes for some of its most iconic pins and jewels, and is used as its primary advertising motif, symbolizing femininity, adventure and pure luxury. In 1983, the brand first introduced the elegant Panthère de Cartier watch, which owes its timelessness to the precision of its proportions. Streamlined, authentic and sophisticated, it combined the very best of Cartier design and instantly became a coveted piece of jewelry. Tiny screws punctuate the bezel with style, while the flexible links of the gold bracelet coil around the wrist. The soft square shape, legendary octagonal sapphire winding crown and Roman numerals are among its signature features. For 2018, the ever-popular Panthère de Cartier adopts new looks that showcase its femininity. The dainty square case with rounded corners features diamond pavé and the bezel, in selected white and pink gold versions, serves to maximize its visual appeal. The bracelet glints with lusty sensibility and the links coil seductively around the wrist. Its flowing form is supple on the skin as the iconic style of the watch layers elegance upon elegance. These new creations are complemented by original renditions of the Panthère de Cartier timepiece in pink gold pavéd entirely with diamonds; yellow gold; pink gold and steel; and steel, their bezels also pavéd with diamonds. The watches are available in medium (27mm x 37mm), small (22mm x 30mm) or mini (20mm x 25mm) for the models with a triple loop bracelet. They house a quartz movement powering the hours and minutes. It is a must-have piece for any woman’s watch collection. Simply put, the Panthère de Cartier is the cat’s meow.

Naturally NEVIS

Unassuming. Unhurried. Unspoiled. Once you get to Nevis, you’ll never want to leave.

O

n the island of Nevis, it’s not the swaying palm trees, fresh coconuts filled with rum drinks or perfect weather that make it special. (Although, trust us, it has all of that.) It’s the island’s spirit. Nevis is a whimsical 36-square-mile island you can only reach by private plane or ferry from St. Kitts—cruise ships aren’t permitted to saturate the island with passengers. Buildings can’t be taller than a palm tree. There are no chain restaurants or all-inclusive resorts allowed, and it’s normal to see more vervet monkeys on the road than cars. Here, every luxury is at your fingertips, but you won’t find a beach overrun with hotels where throngs of travelers can ruin the experience. With landscapes that rival a postcard, you can see both the island’s active volcano, Nevis Peak, and the Caribbean Sea from every point on Nevis—and an abundance of colorful gardens, coconut palms, 500-plus types of mangoes and pastel houses in between. In Nevis, smiling is instinctive and cursing isn’t allowed. (In fact, it’s illegal to do the latter in public.) On an island like this, elite travelers need accommodations to match the locale’s rare ambience, and there’s nowhere more fitting than the Four Seasons Resort Nevis. Spread over a jawdropping 350 acres of land, this gem of a resort manages to subtly fold into the humble fabric of Nevis while making guests feel right at home. Perfect for families of any size, Four Seasons Resort Nevis boasts more than 50 villas and estate homes that range from one to seven bedrooms. From your villa, sit by your private pool and watch the sunset over the championship Robert Trent Jones II golf course, wake up to views of mystical Nevis Peak, or fall asleep to the lapping waves of the Caribbean. Every stay offers a complimentary six-seat golf cart, 24-hour room service, housekeeping, tailoring services, stocked kitchens, private chefs and even a personal “ambassador” who will tend to your every need. Should you care to leave your solitary paradise, you will have access to all of the resort’s amenities. Two gourmet restaurants, 10 tennis courts, beachside infinity pools, an award-winning spa and kids’ programs are just some of the hard-to-resist offerings. Nevis is perfect, but be forewarned: Once you visit, you might not be able to leave. Just ask the locals—they still claim to be on vacation.

POLARIS AUTOMATIC THE REBIRTH OF AN ICON First introduced in 1968 as a diver’s watch, the Polaris is brought back to life 50 years later in a contemporary version, equipped with the Manufacture Calibre 898E/1, as part of the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris collection designed, manufactured and assembled in-house.

Creating a

MOVEMENT TUDOR’ s iconic divers’ watch has power to spare and a new GMT function, too.

T

udor surprised and delighted its fans and the watch world by introducing the new Black Bay GMT at Baselworld 2018. The iconic divers’ watch is now available with a new GMT function that establishes local time while keeping time for two additional zones with a red snowflake hand. Inspired by the Tudor divers’ watches of the 1950s, this version maintains the 41mm stainless steel case. Not only does the Black Bay GMT offer Tudor’s first in-house GMT movement, the manufacture calibre MT5652, but it has 70 hours of power reserve and is the first of the entire Black Bay line to offer a GMT complication. It’s waterproof to 200 meters (660 feet) and boasts a bidirectional rotatable steel bezel with 48 notches and 24-hour graduated anodized aluminum disc. The Black Bay GMT borrows from its Rolex heritage. But it does so in a nuanced way, integrating plenty of unique-to-Tudor design features, like snowflake hands and, of course, the Black Bay case with its big crown. Recognizable by its rotatable bezel, the Black Bay GMT is a nod to the early days of this watchmaking function. Its deep blue and burgundy color theme (which watch-world insiders refer to as the “Pepsi” bezel) is derived from other models in the Black Bay line, but in a matte version. With this new, innovative movement, the rugged Black Bay GMT holds its own against its “big brother,” the Rolex GMT-Master II, which also runs on the MT5652 movement. The black dial features a domed sapphire crystal and can be set on a stainless steel bracelet, leather strap or fabric strap. The Tudor Black Bay GMT prioritizes form and function and is travelready. This timepiece continues Tudor’s tradition of ergonomic, accurate and robust divers’ watches.

CITY STYLE Rich textures and vivid prints give life to winter looks.

PARIS

Yellow was an unconventional street style choice for the colder months, but the mellow, understated hue, which dominated runways and streetwear at Paris Fashion Week, provided reprieve from winter’s standard black and gray pieces. A cheery yellow, similar in color to a spicy mustard, worked best on accent pieces like hats or scarves, but fashionistas were really brightening things up with bold trenches or jackets too. And shouldn’t Parisian fashion be as romantic as the city of love itself? Flowy dresses adorned with accents like ruffles, feathers and florals were très romantique. Trendy headpieces, like silky headscarves tied to recall the ’60s style of Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and traditional Parisian berets, paired with sunglasses, were as cold-weather appropriate as they were chic.

W

hile models strutted the runways donning designers’ visions of high fashion, we took a peek at the streets outside the fall/ winter Fashion Week shows in Paris, Milan and London to find style inspiration.

MILAN

Despite its fashion-forward reputation, the streets of this style mecca were filled with women making what’s old new again. Staples of the ’80s, like power suits and chunky sweaters, were abundant in streetwear and runway apparel, often in bold, busy prints and fluorescent hues. Leopard and cheetah prints stemming from the same era were pretty much everywhere, too, worn as both workwear and athleisure. Finally, wrapping yourself up in a blanket was the way to stay warm and look stylish on the streets of Italia and elsewhere. Think along the lines of knits or fur blankets. Oversized scarves made a comfy statement, too.

ACC.LONDON.WomensStyle2.indd 60

LONDON

Scottish tartan prints crossed the border and popped up on blazers, coats, pants and pencil skirts during London Fashion Week. But plaid wasn’t the only standout texture, as women walked the streets in coats, vests and dresses made from tapestry-inspired materials that could’ve been pulled from the Queen Mum’s curtains. The heavy brocades were opulent and…dare we say, royal? Meanwhile, bright pieces in all colors of the rainbow added much-needed color. Apple red blazers and rainbow check scarfs instantly boosted moods.

Layer on LUXURY

When it comes to jewelry, you can’t have too much of a good thing. Here’s how to make layering—think bracelets, rings and necklaces—work for you. Arm Parties

MAKE IT PERSONAL Consider a ring stack that tells a story— maybe you’ll want to wear your wedding band between rings with your birthstone or those of your spouse or children, for instance.

The key to the perfect arm party—also known as a bracelet stack—is finding the right balance between variety and cohesion. CHOOSE WISELY The first step is to figure out if you want to stick with one metal, like rose, white or yellow gold, or mix them up to add visual interest. Keep in mind that colorful stacks are especially on-trend for 2019.

Chain Gang

Layered necklaces are one jewelry trend that never goes out of style. TELL A COLOR STORY As with bracelets, figure out if you’d like to keep the layers streamlined in one color metal or would prefer to mix it up.

BEST OF THREE...OR FIVE Odd numbers are most pleasing to the eye, so consider stacking bracelets in groups of three, five or seven. Group similar pieces for a streamlined look, or go bold by choosing baubles with different metals, textures and types of gemstones.

THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT Staggering necklaces by length is the key to the layered look; the shortest should be 14 inches and the longest around 33 inches. The neckline of your top should help determine the length of the first bauble—a 14- or 16-inch choker nicely complements a scoopneck top or T-shirt, but go to about 20 inches if you’re wearing a boatneck or higher neckline. Your second necklace should be longer than your first—even an inch or two more in length is fine. It should also be slightly different from the first, either with a more delicate chain or more beading. Finally, the third piece should be the longest and anchor the others, so consider a necklace with some weight to it—lariats are an easy way to add length, but necklaces with charms or pendants are also great options.

MORE IS MERRIER With your base stack complete, now you can really have fun with it: Add a leather or studded cuff for an edgy touch, or replace one of the metal pieces with a vintage bangle that has sentimental value.

Ring Stacks

Similar rules apply when stacking rings: The more variety of sizes, colors and shapes the better. THREE’S COMPANY Too many rings on one finger can be overkill, so don’t stack more than three on short fingers. You also can add one or two bands or midi rings on other fingers to complement the main stack.

BE YOU Necklaces should be unique to the wearer just like rings: Add in personal elements like birthstones, zodiac signs, initialed items or religious symbols. Enameled pendants and gemstones in your favorite color are fun additions as well.

MIX MASTER Combine delicate bands with chunkier ones to add more dimension, and play around until you find a combination you love—the rings don’t all need to “match.”

Ardor and ARTISTRY

PAOLO COSTAGLI’s passion for all things Italian translates to beautiful, wearable pieces of art.

P

assionate about jewelry from the time he was a youth in Florence, Paolo Costagli has translated that ardor into artistry through his Paolo Costagli New York brand, which has been delighting customers with its bold, modern, yet always timeless designs for the past 25 years. Costagli moved to the United States in 1988 to pursue becoming a Graduate Gemologist at the renowned Gemological Institute of America and is now considered one of the world’s foremost authorities on colored stones and diamonds. Not content, however, with his formal education, Costagli then spent time in South America, experiencing firsthand the unearthing process. It is this unusual combination of technical expertise, formal studies and an innate understanding of design that has contributed to his brand’s success since 1993. While all of Costagli’s work is a showcase for his unique talent, he has become best known for his iconic Brillante collection, which is inspired by a particularly intricate tiling that can be found in the Doge’s Palace in Venice, as well as many other buildings in Italy. He was immediately captivated by its sense of three-dimensionality even though it was on a completely flat surface, and upon his return to New York, Costagli knew that he wanted to reinterpret this classic design into wearable fine jewelry. Of course, there were challenges: Costagli wanted to create the highest possible polish of the surfaces and still maintain the sharpness of the corners and the flatness of the facets, all while concealing the hinges. The process took many months of testing and retesting until he discovered the correct proportions to ensure the best appearance, wearability and price. “The essence of the collection is founded on the execution of the polishing of each jewel,” reveals Costagli. “If it isn’t polished, it doesn’t sparkle to our satisfaction! In our opinion, each piece of jewelry should catch the light and be as vibrant as possible.” In addition to the Brillante collection, Paolo Costagli is beloved for his Eternita collection of fashion-forward rings in which a single, one-of-a-kind gemstone is elevated atop a classic eternity band; his Florentine collection, inspired by the Garden of the Iris; his Ombre collection, which highlights the diverse hues and textures found in sapphires; and his Valentina collection, in which carefully selected gemstones float above pavé-set diamonds, each time creating a unique, never-to-beduplicated piece. In so many ways, Paolo Costagli stands on its own as a jewelry brand that is a must-have addition to any woman’s wardrobe. Experience Paolo Costagli at London Jewelers Americana Manhasset. FROM Resort to REALITY

Transitioning your summer jewelry into fall is a breeze. The key? Mixing and matching.

I

f you stowed away your oversized colored baubles thinking you won’t see them again until your next vacation, think again. It turns out big accessories are in for holiday 2018 and beyond. You can wear your beachy pieces in the cooler weather and look both seasonally and sartorially appropriate by mixing and matching. For example, add a statement coral necklace among staggered delicate chains, or pair your turquoise pendant with a stylish chain necklace that can be worn long or short. Hoops are also a good bet. The jewelry box staples have been having a resurgence on the runways in both gold and silver —and provide an understated complement to summer’s bright color palette. And because your wrists and décolletage will be covered by sweaters and coats, the dangle and drop earrings you once paired with sunnies and a sundress are an easy transition. Super-long earrings were all over the runways this season, worn either as a pair or individually for an on-trend, mismatched look.

ORIGINATOR OF CULTURED PEARLS TO LEGENDARY JEWELER MIKIMOTO celebrates its 125th anniversary. Original Yaguruma Obidome Kimono Sash Clip

Praise to Nature Collection

Mikimoto LEFT.indd 2

S

ince 1893, Mikimoto has celebrated the natural beauty, exceptional quality and timeless elegance that define the originator of the world’s finest cultured pearls. This year marks its 125th anniversary, a time to reflect and look to the future, ushering in a new chapter of the Mikimoto brand. When founder Kokichi Mikimoto successfully created the world’s first cultured pearl, he continued to innovate and develop new techniques and designs, rivaling those of his European contemporaries. At the 1937 International Exposition in Paris, he unveiled the Obidome Kimono Sash Clip, with exquisite detail and Art Deco style. Adorned with Akoya cultured pearls and precious stones, it demonstrated a novel versatility with 12 interchangeable settings that allowed the disassembling and reassembling of parts to form completely different pieces, including a brooch, rings and hair ornaments. To celebrate 125 years, Mikimoto proudly revisits this classic, vintage design and introduces the Yaguruma collection, featuring a belt, bracelet and pendants. Shown in Geneva earlier this year, one of this season’s highlights is the Praise to Nature collection. Through exquisite craftsmanship, it’s the embodiment of a song of praise to the glory of the natural world. Fantastic gemstones—diamond, emerald, pink and blue sapphire, and aquamarine—appear throughout the new collections, dancing in a festival of color. In Kokichi Mikimoto’s pioneering spirit, the jeweler’s spectacular pearl collections continue to pay homage to natural origins and evolve with High Jewellery. “2018 is an important year that marks a pivoting point and clear transition to focusing more on High Jewellery, notably non-pearl jewelry,” says Yugo Tsukikawa, senior vice president of marketing and brand strategy, Mikimoto America. Outlining its future, Mikimoto extends its expertise and creativity to brand-new luxury gifts: photo frames in Akoya cultured pearl and diamond, thoughtfully designed in a lacework pattern, as well as radially cut mother of pearl. Both lines signify the next step for the lustrous pearl house, as its luxury offering extends globally and beyond jewelry, growing to meet the demands of today’s customer.

MATTERS OF TASTE E

ven the best can’t rest on their laurels. Especially the most famous and highly rated restaurants in the world. Relying on the same menu and experience year after year—or even month after month—no longer guarantees success and longevity. For restaurants such as New York’s Eleven Madison Park, Copenhagen’s Noma, Chicago’s Alinea and Napa Valley’s The French Laundry, reinvention and renovation are what keep them on top of the culinary world. “We’ve always talked about how every table is its own experience,” says Billy Peelle, the general manager for Eleven Madison Park, which regularly tops lists of the world’s best restaurants. For the three Michelin star-awarded eatery, that meant embracing a philosophy of “endless reinvention.” In 2011, owners Will Guidara and Chef Daniel Humm took over a space created by restaurateur Danny Meyer with plans to gut the kitchen and redesign the dining space. The restaurant reopened last fall, its new layout providing a less communal, more intimate culinary experience with a more prominent bar area.

First-time restaurant designer (and longtime diner) architect Brad Cloepfil collaborated with the owners and staff in brainstorming sessions to create a modern, vibrant customer experience. “We thought, how would we want to eat?” says Peelle. “The room is designed first and foremost to reflect what we’re trying to do.” The menu was also reinvented: Guidara and Humm, who previously transitioned from a three-course prix fixe to a 15-course tasting menu, now offer a menu-free, bespoke dining experience. In Copenhagen, René Redzepi, owner/ chef of Noma, took the concept of reinvention even further, moving the awardwinning, two Michelin-star restaurant from a multi-story warehouse to a completely new, lakeside “urban village,” and overhauling a menu that focused on wild plants and game to one of ultra-fresh seafood. The goal was to embrace Denmark and its culture. “As soon as we focused on the oceans, we’re like, ‘Wow, we actually don’t really know very much,’” Redzepi told The Wall Street Journal. In Chicago, Alinea—the innovative molecular gastronomy experience that

opened under chef Grant Achatz in 2005—closed in 2016 for an extensive renovation and a total overhaul of its menu. And in Napa Valley, chef Thomas Keller and his team recently completed a $10 million renovation of the iconic The French Laundry, which includes a state-of-the-art kitchen (with wraparound windows for guests to peek in), a significantly expanded wine cellar, an annex and a new courtyard dining space. The modernist architecture and landscaping both contrast with and enhance the historic farmhouse vibe of the 25-yearold concept. “The new design is an innovative and functioning space that allows us to continue to evolve as a restaurant,” Keller has said. The question for these restaurateurs is, will their traditional guests continue to support

them? “Of course, you do open yourself up to a new type of criticism,” Redzepi told WSJ. “Will it be as good as before?” Peelle also concedes the risk in reinvention. “Every time there is change, it’s going to be met with resistance. You might lose some guests, but you also gain guests.” And in an era where many diners are always chasing the Next Big Thing, there’s an appeal to being cutting edge. And many reviewers say the reboots are better than the originals. Evolution, it seems, is necessary to survival. Peelle says, “The staff is continually training. As soon as you stop learning, you lose your edge.”

FLOAT YOUR STRESS AWAY The healing power of salt and water ease tension and pain.

F

Park, New York. Seeking healthy ways to cope with her own ailments, owner Kimberly Boone discovered flotation therapy in 2013 and bought a tank for her home. She opened her doors to others in need, and as word spread and demand grew, Boone opened her first Hope Floats location in Bethesda (coincidentally the birthplace of flotation therapy) and later branched out to Long Island. If the idea of floating in an isolation tank makes you feel claustrophobic, don’t fear, Boone advises. “Once inside, you lose your sense of space and feel nothing but relaxed.” (Plus, you can open and close the door at will and even leave it cracked open.) If you’re planning a trip West this holiday season, you may want to try a twist on flotation therapy at Miraval Arizona. The spa’s Vasudhara service is an innovative open-air water treatment in which guests wear blindfolds and noisecanceling headphones and receive a Thai massage while pulsations of sound come from underwater speakers. Because of the weightlessness of the water, guests get deeper, more beneficial stretches all in the pursuit of finding “true peace in the darkness.” Can you say “ahh?”

r o m natural springs to hot baths, water’s healing properties have been exalted throughout the ages. One of the latest spa trends, flotation therapy (also known as Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) blends the timehonored benefits of H2O with modern techniques. In this sensory deprivation experience, you sit or lie in a “pod” filled with water and a highly concentrated amount of Epsom salt—an important ingredient as it helps make the body buoyant—to create a zero-gravity environment. The goal is to naturally relieve stress, anxiety and pain as you float in complete darkness and silence. Research shows this type of therapy can provide powerful muscle relaxation, and some studies show floating helps shut off stress circuits in the brain. Flotation therapy has been around since 1954 when it was developed at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland, by Dr. John C. Lilly, an American neurophysiologist. In an effort to discover how the brain would react if it were denied external stimulation, he invented the first flotation isolation tank, discovering it elicited a deep relaxation response. As the therapy gains fans, more and more flotation centers are opening, including Hope Floats in Williston

The Vasudhara treatment at Miraval helps muscles lengthen and joints open.

There Are TWO Sides to Every Story When it’s time to propose, we offer the best experience in the business. But don’t just take our word for it! Meet Paige and Brett, newly engaged—and very happy— TWO by London customers. Was Paige surprised by the proposal? Brett: Yes. She thought she was traveling out of state to spend the weekend with her girlfriends from college. Little did she know I coordinated with them and was there waiting when they arrived. She couldn’t believe it when she saw me standing in the same place where I had first asked her to be my girlfriend seven years earlier! Paige: I was extremely surprised by the timing, but I snapped into it pretty quickly and immediately started taking my gloves off! What was your favorite part of the TWO by London experience? B: I was a nervous wreck when I first walked into the store, feeling overwhelmed and worrying about spending my life savings. But Sam

worked with me to find a perfect ring at a price that met my needs. I left the store feeling confident and excited that I had made the right choice. After the sale was made, she kept me updated with every step of the process, letting me know when the alterations were completed and the ring was shipped. The customer service was so good that we still keep in touch today! P: Samantha was and remains incredible. Every time I’m in for a cleaning it’s like I’m seeing an old friend, and that’s just the experience I would expect from London Jewelers. She checks in with me regularly and is always on the ball. What kind of wedding band did you choose? B: I went with a simple black tungsten carbide band. It provided a masculine

look and went with my overall aesthetic. P: I went with two bands (because you can never have enough diamonds). One is a white diamond eternity band and the other is a black diamond band in the same thickness that stacks between the first and my engagement ring. Are you likely to recommend TWO by London? B: Absolutely. The selection is great, and the people really work with you to find something that fits your style and budget. In fact, one of my friends purchased an engagement ring from TWO by London shortly after I did. He is now celebrating his engagement as well! P: Our wonderful friends went to Samantha based on our experience, and we will continue to send people in her direction.

The TWO by London Experience We know people shop for rings in different ways, but what most have in common is a desire to take charge of the diamond buying experience, to test and browse as much as they want, and to have access to advanced design technology. TWO by London, the engagement shop at our Americana Manhasset, Oculus and East Hampton locations, makes it all possible. Our GIA-certified experts are here when you want them, but hands-on exploration also is encouraged via our hundreds of sample rings that can be tried on without assistance. The unique shopping destinations provide a

creative and interactive experience, all backed by more than 90 years of London Jewelers’ expertise. Our diamond buying team, led by vice president Scott Udell, carefully chooses only the highest-quality stones from trusted partners in order to provide our customers the best of the best. Visit us soon and let us help find or design the ring of your dreams. Then, join our VIC (Very Important Couple) program to receive 20 percent off wedding bands, a year of free ring checkups, access to the Wedding Day Jewelry Loan program, lifetime upgrades and more!

VINTAGE Revival

Estate jewelry pieces add current style to your look and recall fashion history at the same time.

I

nterest in vintage (and vintage-inspired) fashion and jewelry has reached new heights. For some shoppers, it’s the thrill of hunting for hidden treasures. For others, it’s the promise of wearing a unique piece that won’t be spotted on anyone else. For many environmentally conscious Millennials, it’s more about making the sustainable choice to buy vintage over new. And others still are looking to invest in luxury at a more affordable price point, choosing quality pieces that have already proven to stand the test of time, at a great value. Stars like Dakota Johnson, Chlöe Sevigny, Alexa Chung and Emma Watson have a wellknown penchant for choosing vintage jewelry and clothing. Watson in particular even has a dedicated Instagram page, @the_press_tour, where she documents her sustainable fashion choices for red carpets, TV appearances and other special events. To build our own growing collection of estate pieces, London Jewelers calls upon nearly a century of expertise in luxury jewelry. Our GIA-certified gemologists appraise and authenticate every item we purchase, and our goldsmiths restore each piece to its original luster. You can shop with the confidence that everything we sell is backed by the London Jewelers name and reputation for excellence. Want to experience the thrill of finding a unique estate piece? Call London Jewelers Americana Manhasset at 516.627.7475 and ask about our collection of vintage jewels.

Our Cause FOR PAWS ost people who no longer want their pets and leave them at shelters probably think they’re doing the right thing. But rescue shelters are always at capacity and there are many more animals being abandoned each day than there are homes that welcome pets in. Once a pet is left at a shelter, it has about 72 hours to be adopted before it is destroyed. The fact remains that each day in the US, around 4,100 dogs and cats are killed in shelters. To support humane no-kill shelters, rescue efforts, spay/neuter services, veterinary work and humane education, London Jewelers has created a full line of Our Cause for Paws jewelry, with a portion of each sale going directly to deserving organizations. Established in 2010, the Rescue Paw Foundation also raises and grants funds to those whose mission is to keep companion animals alive, healthy and happy. Candy Udell serves on the boards of HEART, providing humane education to foster compassion and respect for all living beings, and Pet Philanthropy Circle, saving and enhancing the quality of animal lives. She has also lent her support to the LIU Post College of Veterinary Medicine, which will open in fall 2019. In recognition of her work, Candy will be honored in April by Best Friends Animal Society, aiming to end the killing in America’s animal shelters by building community programs and partnerships across the nation. While she is proud and humbled to accept this award, Candy is quick to mention the countless others with whom her successes would not have been possible. Others such as Laura Macias, working at a high-kill shelter in Wilmer, Texas and devoting her own time and resources to saving animals who would otherwise be put down; Jeffrey Beri, the founder of No Dogs Left Behind, rescuing dogs from butchers’ trucks and

slaughterhouses around China to save them from becoming a part of the grisly dog meat trade; Dr. Suzanne Ravitz, a rescue vet at Dix Hills Animal Hospital, treating sick and abused pets and aiding them on their way to becoming adoptable; “The Animal Rescuer” Tawana Couch of the Society for Companion Animals; and Lisa Wysocki and Suzanne Steinberg of Fido Fixers, providing no- or low-cost spay/neuter services in economically distressed areas. In the coming months, we invite you to visit ourcauseforpaws.org and facebook.com/ourcauseforpaws, where we look forward to sharing their stories and those of our other partners in the fight to find forever homes for animals in need. And on Thursday evening, November 29th, please join us at London Jewelers Americana Manhasset for Champions for Charity, a fun-filled adoption and networking event featuring speakers on various animal welfare topics and representatives from many of our wonderful shelter partners, including ARF, Bideawee, Jake’s Rescue Ranch, Spot On and the Town of North Hempstead’s Shelter Connection. We have a long way to go in this fight, and your support could mean a great deal to a dog or cat in need of a loving home!

new and GUIDE What’s what we love.

18: A Very Good Year

What’s in a number? In Judaism, there’s a belief that 18 is lucky, while the same number is associated with abundance and wealth in Chinese folklore. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a hold of and sip one (or all) of these under-the-radar spirits that have been aged for 18 years. They might not result in riches, but we know you’ll treasure their tastes. Fuenteseca Reserva tequila was aged for six years in Atotonilco El Alto before spending 12 years aging in El Chapingo. It is free of the artificial coloring and flavors now found in some añejo tequilas on the market. The natural process allows the liquor to develop its authentic gold coloring, creamy vanilla taste and palate-pleasing cedar and sandalwood undertones.

This straight rye whiskey is the oldest release of Lock Stock & Barrel to date—making it quite the coveted craft liquor. The aging process tames its spicy overtones and brings out hints of candied ginger, vanilla and cherry. And despite its high proof, this rye is smooth enough to be enjoyed without ice.

Just 800 bottles of this single-cask Gelas Bas-Armagnac are available. In the mouth, this brandy expresses notes of crystallized clementine, candied apple and lemon, and a hint of smooth blackberry cream. The distinct aromas of caramel, toasted oak and vanilla create a pleasant experience on the nose.

Luxury in La-La Land

Known for its breathtaking design and sophisticated service in gateway cities across the globe, Edition Hotels is opening its newest location along the iconic Sunset Strip next spring. A partnership between Ian Schrager—founder of Morgans, the first “boutique” hotel and co-owner of the famed Studio 54 nightclub—and Marriott International, the space features 190 guest rooms, a four-treatment-room spa and plenty of spots to dine and let loose, including a signature restaurant, lobby lounge and, of course, a nightclub and bar. In signature Edition style, the West Hollywood Edition design will reflect its unique surroundings. A rooftop pool and lounge invite you to relax and take in the stunning SoCal sunsets. And if you love it so much you wish you lived there… maybe you can! The property includes 20 luxury residences as well.

A Timely Story How did Rolex become the most collected watch label in the world? Discover the fascinating story behind visionary founder Hans Wilsdorf and the company’s impressive achievements in the new book Rolex: The Impossible Collection. Trace the watchmaker’s milestones, from creating the first wristwatch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision in 1910, to the first waterproof watch, to the first selfwinding mechanism.… The list goes on. Featuring nearly 200 illustrations and photographs and written by Fabienne Reybaud, senior editor of watches and jewelry at the French daily newspaper Le Figaro, this tome will delight collectors and anyone inspired by an innovative spirit. Housed in a luxury clamshell case with metal plaque, the book arrives perfect for gifting.

Rodeo Drive will sparkle magnificently once again this holiday season thanks to a partnership between renowned French luxury house Baccarat and Beverly Hills. Sixteen handcrafted chandeliers will line the famed upscale shopping destination, helping tourists and locals alike shine with the spirit of the holidays. Now you can glimpse Baccarat’s exquisite lighting closer to home via multiple new layered crystal chandeliers at London Jewelers’ East Hampton location. The installation is part of Baccarat’s Tuile de Cristal collection designed by revered artist Arik Levy. The idea of tuile (“tile” in French) is to be able to have one repetitive element that can build up to any form, according to Levy. This flexibility makes the lighting more architecturally friendly for homes and businesses, rather than limiting chandeliers to the palaces and concert halls for which they were historically designed, he adds. “The beauty of this project, in my eyes, is how to bridge 250 years of history of Baccarat and the history of our living environment, and what is light, and what is a lamp.”

GUIDE

Winemaker for a Day

A visit to Conn Creek Winery for its Barrel Blending Experience should be a definite stop on your next trip to Napa Valley. At this boutique winery on the Silverado Trail in St. Helena, the day begins with a guided tasting of Conn Creek’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and its most popular wine, Anthology. Conn Creek winemaker Elizabeth DeLouise-Gant says, “Sourcing grapes from nearly all of Napa Valley’s appellations provides us with many alternatives when it comes to crafting our flagship wine, and it’s fun for our guests to create their own blend.” The barrel blending room, where one entire wall is filled with barrels of 100-percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the 15 different AVAs in Napa Valley, was specifically designed to house the Barrel Blending Experience. The barrels are arranged from the softest to the most structured in palate weight and texture. Above each is the name of the vineyard where the grapes are sourced. You’ll then create your own Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine, adjusting to perfection by adding nuance with other Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. A tasting book lets you record notes like soft, supple, complex, rich and bold. Think back to chemistry class (down to the beaker and pipettes)—but much more fun, and with wine! Amateur vintners play around with several formulas before committing to one personalized blend. Conn Creek’s wine educator is there to guide and give suggestions, after which you get to bottle, hand-cork, and design your own labels. Take your one-of-a-kind bottles with you or have them shipped home. The specific formula is saved by Conn Creek, so if your creation is a hit and you’d like to reorder more, all you have to do is pick up the phone.

Road Warrior Drivers who experience the joy of racing in a sporty Mercedes-Benz AMG SL65 convertible owe a nod of gratitude to a couple of speed-obsessed Germans. In the 1960s, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher were young engineers working on the 300 SE racing engine at Daimler-Benz when the company discontinued all motorsports activities. But the pair had an unrelenting passion for modeling road vehicles after racing cars. In 1967, they left Daimler-Benz to found Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach, or AMG. Today, this engineering firm is owned by Mercedes-Benz. In 2018, the AMG SL65 extends the blissful union between AMG’s muscular engineering and Mercedes-Benz’s lavish design. One of the most powerful in its class, this roadster packs a punch with

a 6.0-liter AMG V-12 biturbo engine that pumps out 621 horsepower. Able to go 0 to 60 in just 3.9 seconds, this model reaches its top speed of 186 mph in what seems like the blink of an eye. The 2018 AMG SL65 provides as much swank as it does soup. The panoramic sunroof creates an open-air feeling even when the coupe is closed. The high-tech glass controls exposure to harmful UV and infrared rays from the sun while keeping the cabin of the vehicle cool. The roof’s electrochromatic technology automatically changes the glass from transparent to opaque based on the amount of thermal energy entering the cabin. When drivers are ready to feel the wind in their hair, the SL can be transformed to an open roadster in less than 20 seconds—even while traveling up to 25 mph.

SPECIAL PROMOTION

Breitling’s NAVITIMER 8 B

A tribute to one of watchmaking’s greatest legacies.

reitling, famous for its chronographs and its strong link to aviation, has just launched a new pilot’s watch collection: the Navitimer 8. The 8 in its name is a nod to the Huit Aviation Department, which was set up in 1938 to produce cockpit instruments as well as classic pilot’s watches for civilian and military use. At the time, Willy Breitling chose the name “Huit,” the French word for eight, as a reference to the eight-day power reserve offered by its storied cockpit instruments. Georges Kern, Breitling’s CEO since the summer of 2017, is particularly excited about the new product line. “With the Navitimer 8,” he says, “we are honoring not only our rich heritage, but also our pioneering role in building chronographic instruments. But while the Navitimer 8 pays tribute to our past, it also does something considerably more important. It opens the door to a very exciting future.” The Navitimer 8 family introduces five distinct models that are worthy heirs to watchmaking’s richest aviation tradition, drawing heavily on Breitling’s design DNA and the technical features of the first board clocks and pilot’s wristwatches as well as on the Huit Aviation Department’s commitment to quality.

Breitling LEFT.indd 2

Each of the five new models in the collection expresses a design code—conceived down to the minutest detail—with a high recognition value. Guy Bove, creative director at Breitling, who fully immersed himself in the design of the board clocks and wristwatches created by the Huit Aviation Department, described the inspiration behind the Navitimer 8’s exterior design cues as follows: “With the Navitimer 8, we wanted to create a watch that was in line with our vision for the brand’s future, but which would also pay tribute to the great Breitling watches of the early to mid-20th century. From a design perspective, it occupies a unique position between Huit’s onboard clocks and the Navitimer.” The new watches resurrect some of the design values of the Huit Aviation Department’s onboard clocks—especially in terms of the dials and bezels—as well as Breitling’s iconic pilot’s watch, Reference 768, with the rotating bezel and distinctive triangular pointer that made it a favorite among pilots. Just as important were the luminous hands against black dials, a combination that offered easy readability in any lighting conditions, and which also contributed to Breitling’s aviation heritage. The Navitimer 8 watches recall the uncompromising flair of that earlier era.

TAG Heuer CARRERA

CALIBRE 16 CHRONOGRAPH

2018 marks the 55th anniversary of the iconic TAG HEUER Carrera collection.

S

ince its debut in 1963, this model has become synonymous with motorsports timekeeping. The collection takes its name from the legendary week-long Carrera Panamericana road race held in Mexico during the 1950s, a thrilling competition revived in 1988 as an annual rally for pre-1955 collectors’ vehicles, for which TAG Heuer serves as both partner and Official Timekeeper. TAG Heuer has recently unveiled two new stylish, vintage-inspired timepieces featuring the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 chronograph with a 41mm diameter. The black version is adorned with a magnificent perforated black leather strap with red stitching, and the blue version features

a steel bracelet for maximum comfort. With touches of red, the colors, contrasts and position of the counters are all clear references to motorsports. The two sporty models feature a vintage signature produced by the three white counters, which stand out starkly against a dial featuring a white flange with a 60-second scale. The seconds counter is at 9 o’clock, the minute counter at 12 o’clock and the hour counter at 6 o’clock. The bezel is made from ceramic and features a tachymeter scale—a crucial component on an automotive chronograph. Both models are beautiful additions to the TAG Heuer Carrera collection.
