2018 MARKS THE 55TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ICONIC TAG HEUER CARRERA COLLECTION. Since its debut in 1963, this model has become synonymous with motorsports timekeeping. The collection takes its name from the legendary week-long Carrera Panamericana road race held in Mexico during the 1950s, a thrilling competition revived in 1988 as an annual rally for pre-1955 collectors’ vehicles, for which TAG Heuer serves as both partner and Official Timekeeper. TAG Heuer has recently unveiled two new stylish, vintage-inspired timepieces featuring the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 chronograph with a 41mm diameter. The black version is adorned with a magnificent perforated black leather strap with red stitching, and the blue version features a steel

bracelet for maximum comfort. With touches of red, the colors, contrasts and position of the counters are all clear references to motorsports. The two sporty models feature a vintage signature produced by the three white counters, which stand out starkly against a dial featuring a white flange with a 60-second scale. The seconds counter is at 9 o’clock, the minute counter at 12 o’clock and the hour counter at 6 o’clock. The bezel is made from ceramic and features a tachymeter scale—a crucial component on an automotive chronograph. Both models are beautiful additions to the TAG Heuer Carrera collection.

A Golden Partnership A SPECIAL COLLABORATION WITH THE MASSACHUSETTS INSITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATES THE KINSHIP THAT LINKS JEWELRY AND SCIENCE: A PASSION FOR PRECISION. By John A. Green

Over the years, we have written many articles about our family’s incredible adventures around the world. We’ve been to diamond and platinum mines in South Africa, tourmaline mines in California, trade shows and gemological trips on every continent. This story is about a very different type of adventure, but it’s close to home. It’s on the cusp of cutting-edge research and technology that can help our fragile environment. For the past eight years we have had a partnership with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge. Honestly, we aren’t even sure how the department found Lux Bond & Green. Yet a small group of researchers reached out to our corporate service manager, Steve Lumb, on a mission to find very specifically measured pure gold o-rings for their innovative research. The research conducted in the Reacting Gas Dynamics lab at MIT, led by Professor Ahmed F. Ghoniem, investigates novel approaches to produce power and chemicals with lower energy consumption and less environmental impacts compared to traditional methods. Ceramic materials are investigated in membrane reactors that can be used to produce oxygen, hydrogen and valuable chemicals, among other important energy applications. Sealing is required to avoid gas leakage within the reactor. Especially when operating at high temperatures, e.g., 1000C (or 1832F), it is important to use materials that can withstand such a hot environment without contaminating the membrane or catalyzing undesired reactions. Pure gold is the best candidate for such applications: It melts at approximately 1065C (1950F), does not contaminate the ceramic materials and is inert in a hydrocarbon environment. To seal the material in the reactor properly, zero tolerance for the pure gold o-rings is required, which is not a problem for our master goldsmiths. Because we work with very small and

expensive gemstones as well as precious metals, we understood the request for precision manufacturing. Fascinated by this opportunity and the potential impact this research could have on the environment, we gave them advantageous prices to help with the project. The gold o-rings were exactly what the researchers needed and a lasting partnership was born. Fast-forward to 2018, and we continue to enjoy a relationship with these research engineers as their project evolves and leads to the discovery of expanded applications of carbon dioxide capture and reuse, oxygen, hydrogen and chemicals production using renewable resources we can only describe as amazing. Time goes by and everyone gets busy, but finally I said we must make time to meet and understand what they are doing with the gold o-rings we fabricate. What we discovered in our conversations with Xiao-Yu Wu, Ph.D.,

although this is out of the ordinary and it’s not profitable, we take pleasure in helping the far-reaching work that happens at MIT and probably many other universities around the world. Partnerships like this are fascinating: throughout my 40-year career, any gold bands that we sold were for wearing on fingers. Now these are being used in reactors and under scientifically controlled conditions.

and his fellow researcher, Georgios Dimitrakopoulos, Ph.D., is that this project might someday be able to take ordinary water and turn it into a fuel through conversion to hydrogen using electrolysis and/or thermolysis. Much of the research concentrates on how to achieve a high hydrogen production rate, long-term stability of the material and cost effectiveness, so there can be wide usage around the world. The funders behind many of the projects are big users of energy, who might be able to lower their own costs as well as reduce pollution through these new scientific discoveries. We were frankly impressed by their willingness to show us the project, the potential applications of their research and the overall dedication to finding new and better ways to develop alternatives to fossil fuels. For us lay folks, these projects are simply mind-boggling. The research happens in these odd-looking laboratories with lots of machines, wires, microscopes, crucibles and reactors as well as other devices considered oddities in our everyday lives. They last for years or decades and take on a life of their own. Each year when we receive an order, we thank them for trusting LBG on their research project. Luckily, we are a family-owned-and-operated business, and

As we learn more, our appreciation grows for the brilliant researchers, universities and companies that are dedicated to solving the world’s problems through research. Our role in this partnership in some small way might help reverse global warming and influence a new wave of energy generation and the use of chemicals in our environment. Thank you, MIT, and thank you Xiao-Yu and Georgios, as this partnership is making LBG proud. Want to learn more? breitling’s navitimer 8 A TRIBUTE TO ONE OF WATCHMAKING’S GREATEST LEGACIES. Breitling, famous for its chronographs and its strong link to aviation, has just launched a new pilot’s watch collection: the Navitimer 8. The 8 in its name is a nod to the Huit Aviation Department, which was set up in 1938 to produce cockpit instruments as well as classic pilot’s watches for civilian and military use. At the time, Willy Breitling chose the name “Huit,” the French word for eight, as a reference to the eight-day power reserve offered by its storied cockpit instruments. Georges Kern, Breitling’s CEO since the summer of 2017, is particularly excited about the new product line. “With the Navitimer 8,” he says, “we are honoring not only our rich heritage but also our pioneering role in building chronographic instruments. But while the Navitimer 8 pays tribute to our past, it also does something considerably more important. It opens the door to a very exciting future.” The Navitimer 8 family introduces five distinct models that are worthy heirs to watchmaking’s richest aviation tradition, drawing heavily on Breitling’s design DNA and the technical features of the first board clocks and pilot’s wristwatches as well as on the Huit Aviation Department’s commitment to quality.

017_LBG_FW18.indd 1

Each of the five new models in the collection expresses a design code —conceived down to the minutest detail—with a high recognition value. Guy Bove, creative director at Breitling, who fully immersed himself in the design of the board clocks and wristwatches created by the Huit Aviation Department, described the inspiration behind the Navitimer 8’s exterior design cues as follows: “With the Navitimer 8, we wanted to create a watch that was in line with our vision for the brand’s future, but which would also pay tribute to the great Breitling watches of the early to mid-20th century. From a design perspective, it occupies a unique position between Huit’s onboard clocks and the Navitimer.” The new watches resurrect some of the design values of the Huit Aviation Department’s onboard clocks—especially in terms of the dials and bezels—as well as Breitling’s iconic pilot’s watch, Reference 768, with the rotating bezel and distinctive triangular pointer that made it a favorite among pilots. Just as important were the luminous hands against black dials, a combination that offered easy readability in any lighting conditions, and which also contributed to Breitling’s aviation heritage. The Navitimer 8 watches recall the uncompromising flair of that earlier era.

ALWAYS IN STYLE, THESE CLASSIC JEWELS ADD A TOUCH OF SIMPLE, LUSTROUS ELEGANCE. By Rita Guarna Whatever oyster first dreamed of pearls had no idea the gems would shine for millennia. Pearls pop up in the Bible and the Koran; were prized by the ancient cultures of Egypt, India and China; and were a big reason—so the historian Suetonius tells us—that Julius Caesar invaded Britain. The costly gem symbolized purity, but also wealth, as usually only royalty or nobility could afford pearls. With the advent of cultured pearls in the early 1900s, that changed. Since famous French fashion designer Coco Chanel incorporated them into mainstream fashion almost a century ago, pearls have become the accessory that makes a look—and never gets old. Today, a new generation of celebrities and tastemakers is appropriating this timeless gem, giving pearls modern meaning and edge. Far from Park Avenue, fashionable women of all ages

are throwing on strands of pearls with everything from black lace cocktail dresses to blue jeans and white T-shirts. From the concert stage to the red carpet, British singer Rita Ora has used a smattering of differentsized pearls to create youthful yet ethereal hair accessories. Singer-songwriter Rihanna rocks pearls with sexy multi-strand collars and layers upon layers of matinee-length strands. Actresses Emma Stone and Lupita Nyong’o have added luster beyond their accessories, wearing pearlcovered gowns for black-tie events. Actress Jessica Alba has been photographed many times wearing pearl earrings. From decidedly modern black pearl-drop earrings to a pair of hanging gold chains punctuated with small luminescent pearls to front-and-back bauble pearl studs, Alba proves that pearl earrings

transition seamlessly from day to night. Whether you prefer the iconic five-strand pearl necklace Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Kate Middleton’s funky white pearl lariat, there are many trendy ways to wear pearls now. For a preppy look, headbands, hair clips and other hair accessories are getting the spotlight. For a more avant-garde approach, pearls are being used as accents in art-inspired sculptural earrings. The unique shapes and textures of baroque pearls make the perfect accessories for a free-spirited boho style. For traditionalists looking for a twist on a classic, the Gucci loafer received an update with pearl-studded heels. But perhaps the final word on pearls came, with fitting simplicity, a half-century ago from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. “Pearls,” she said, “are always appropriate.”

THE GEM OF QUEENS Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but pearls are a woman’s timeless companion. Long known as “the queen of gems” because of their popularity with royalty (among the few who could afford them), pearls have gone mainstream without losing their elegance. Today’s celebrities are making sophisticated and sexy fashion statements with them. From Scarlett Johansson’s luxurious multi-strand, layered look to Jennifer Lawrence’s chic front-and-back black pearl-stud earrings, young fashionistas are donning this classic gem with bold, modern style.

DESIGNERS

DAVID YURMAN OFFERS MODERN UPDATES TO HIS BELOVED COLLECTIONS.

42

LUX BOND & GREEN

From his early years creating jewelry, David Yurman’s palette has included uniquely cut gemstones in unconventional hues. This season, Yurman revisits his signature designs, on some pieces subtly lowering center gemstones to give a more feminine silhouette, and elsewhere, adding statements of individuality with unique symbols, meaningful motifs or boldly hued enamel. Of particular note are updated versions of the iconic Renaissance Cable bracelet, which brings together a striking blend of classical and contemporary sensibilities. The trademarked design—one that has appeared on the wrists of celebrities and tastemakers for more than 30 years—conveys casual elegance and merges fashion and sculpture into fine jewelry. The classic returns in new silhouettes that layer and stack with authentic glamour. A new 5mm width is offered in gold with custom-cut gemstones of rich colors that provide fresh ways to express your personal style. Here, we present three more collection highlights: David Yurman’s newest jewelry that seamlessly layers with the other pieces already in your collection yet makes a statement all its own.

ACC.LBG.DavidYurman.indd 42

10/22/18 11:12 AM

TIDES The designs in this collection are contemporary, sculptural forms that express the rhythms of ocean tides and the continuous motion of waves. The blue topaz set in rows of sterling silver and pavé white diamnds evokes the serenity of crystal seas.

PURE FORM This signature collection celebrates metal’s sculptural properties and explores its range of textures. Pure Form pieces have an innovative carving that gives the illusion of the iconic David Yurman Cable bracelet unwinding, widening and dissolving. By juxtaposing sculpted Cable with smooth metal, the designs create dynamic artistic statements. Layer on Pure Form pieces with your favorite classic Cable bracelets.

CHÂTELAINE Châtelaine continues as a celebration of glamour with sparkling diamonds and sterling silver. It’s one of the brand’s signature collections and a perfect fusion of David and Sybil Yurman’s combined art: the marriage of a sculptor and a painter, which has been on display in some form since the couple began working together in 1969.

OUR “THROWAWAY” CULTURE HASN’T TOUCHED PATEK PHILIPPE. IT WILL STILL FIX ANY OF ITS WATCHES DATING BACK TO THE THIRD YEAR OF VICTORIA’S REIGN, AS ITS TECHNICAL TRAINING MANAGER EXPLAINS. By Karen Alberg Grossman

44

LUX BOND & GREEN

We were wondering about the future of watchmaking and how a company dared promise to fix any of its watches. So we caught up with David Bonilla, Patek Philippe’s technical training manager, for a chat. How did your watchmaking career begin? In 2005 I attended a WOSTEP (Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Program) in Secaucus, N.J. I graduated in 2007 and promptly found a job at Swatch Group’s New Jersey after-sales facility. I soon moved to the new Omega Boutique on Fifth Avenue, servicing products and interacting with clients. In 2010 came an opportunity

INTERVIEW LUX BOND & GREEN

year from those seeking watchmaking jobs, but finding the right talent is challenging, not just for Patek Philippe but for the industry worldwide. We realized several years ago that to maintain our watches and to ensure a strong follow-up support structure, we needed to start training and teaching in-house. So in 2013 we created the first Patek Philippe Institute in Shanghai. This program differs from other two-year watchmaking schools in two ways. First, toward the end each student is taught to service Patek Philippe quartz and mechanical calibers. Second, after finishing the program, students must go to Geneva to complete a four-week training. If they pass, they are certified to work on Patek Philippe watches. Is it true that you will service and repair all Patek watches ever made? Yes. Even watches that date back to 1839. It’s our commitment to our clients. How is that possible? In Geneva we have a separate center dedicated to restoration. There we still maintain many of the original pieces of equipment with which these early watches were made. We pride ourselves on our ability to recreate individual parts if necessary. The time frame may be longer than with a normal repair, but the watch will be returned to the client

46

to work with Patek Philippe at its main office in Rockefeller Center. After five years there working as a watchmaker, I was offered the chance to manage the service center. Your watch repair professionals are known for their exceptional skills. How many do you have and how do you find and train them? At The Henri Stern Watch Agency in New York City, we have 39 highly qualified individuals who handle each step of the repair process; 31 are watchmakers who do the repair, restoration and regulation of the mechanical movements of our clients’ watches. Case repairs are undertaken by four highly trained polishers, who restore cases and bracelets to their original luster. Two watchmakers are reserved for quick service work, so that clients who visit our New York office can have a strap changed, a bracelet adjusted or a battery replaced on the spot. We also have two individuals who perform quality control on all the work done on each watch. Admittedly, we have a difficult time finding qualified and capable people to work at this high level of watchmaking. We get many resumes throughout the

just as beautiful as the day it came out of the showroom. How long does the average repair take? It varies depending on several factors, including the rarity and complexity of the watch and whether it’s a restoration or service to a modern piece. Have you ever had watches that you couldn’t fix? Here, yes. We’ve received timepieces that were crushed or were so fused together by rust that we were unable to fix them locally. We usually refer these especially difficult cases to the factory where they have the machinery and knowledge to complete the repairs. What qualities do you look for when you hire? The No. 1 trait is commitment. Of course, all candidates are given a practical exam and are thoroughly interviewed, but we’re looking for highly skilled individuals who will be committed to the company, not just for years of service, but with genuine passion for their work. It’s a lot to ask for, but I believe that if we don’t search for individuals with such commitment, we’ll never deliver on our promise to produce the finest watch money can buy. Are there enough young people these days who want to be watchmakers? Yes, I would say there’s more interest today in watchmaking among young people than there used to be. I attribute that to social media and various horological societies that keep alive the passion for our craft. So I think the burden is now on the watchmaking industry to nurture and develop this interest among young people. We learned lessons from the quartz crisis of the 1970s and early ’80’s, when the industry lost a lot of talent and risked losing mechanical know-how. We’re on steadier footing now, but we need to better promote the craft of watchmaking in order to pass the baton to a future generation. What is the most rewarding part of your job? Helping to provide the highest level of service for all our clients. I firmly believe in strong commitment to service; nothing is more rewarding than restoring our timepieces for our clients’ wearing pleasure. The toughest or most stressful part? Managing each aspect of the repair process. When a watch comes in for service, each department must work perfectly in sync with the others. If there’s even a small mismatch, it can cause issues for the whole repair process. Bottom line, what would you say distinguishes a Patek Philippe watch from the competition? Passion and commitment. In everything we create there’s a high level of passion, even in the smallest unseen details found in our mechanical watches. We back up that passion with a strong commitment to service and the knowledge to ensure that our watches will perform perfectly for many years to come.

TIMEPIECES The Oyster case has long been one of the determining factors in Rolex’s reputation for excellence, and it constitutes an important milestone in the history of contemporary watchmaking: Invented by Rolex in 1926, it was the world’s first waterproof case for a wristwatch thanks to its patented system of screwing down the bezel, case back and winding crown against the middle case. In 1927, Rolex put its effectiveness to the test by equipping a young Englishwoman, Mercedes Gleitze, with a watch for her swim across the English Channel. After more than 10 hours in the water, it continued to work perfectly, providing irrefutable proof that the Oyster case was waterproof. Today, thanks to the case’s hermetic construction (solid middle case, screw-down case back and crown, friction-fitted crystal and bezel), all Rolex Oyster watches are guaranteed waterproof to a depth of at least 100 meters (328 feet), increasing to 300 meters (984 feet) for the Submariner divers’ models and up to 3,900 meters (12,795 feet) for the Rolex Deepsea. The Oyster’s middle case (the central section of the case) is stamped and machined out of a solid block of 904L steel, 18-karat gold or 950 platinum. It is extremely robust and forms the backbone to which all the other parts of the case are securely fitted. Some professional models

feature a crown guard on the side; these shoulders are stamped as an integral part of the middle case. The sapphire crystal is mounted on a gasket, and the whole is fitted against the flange of the case and hermetically clamped tight by the bezel or a sealing ring. Oyster case backs are hermetically screwed down against the middle case. All models in the Oyster collection are equipped with the Oyster case and a Twinlock or Triplock winding crown. The Twinlock screwdown winding crown, developed and patented by Rolex, comprises a double system of seals, guaranteeing waterproofness to a depth of 100 meters. The Triplock comprises 10 components made of materials selected for their inherent qualities, including 18-karat gold or 904L steel for the crown and polymers for the gaskets. Once assembled, the system is screwed down against the Oyster case, offering watertight security akin to a submarine’s hatch. All Oyster cases are manufactured in-house by Rolex. After the final control operations, every Oyster watch is immersed in water and subjected to a pressure 10 percent greater than that found at the depth to which it is guaranteed—25 percent more in the case of divers’ watches. Robust and waterproof, this perfectly proportioned and elegant watch case blends form and function.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39 with white dial, Oyster bracelet in Oystersteel, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and 48-hour power reserve. Actor Orlando Bloom’s collection of rare vintage luxury watches has included this Rolex Explorer II “Orange Hand” with a fat strap.

FACE TIME Orlando Bloom’s watch collection would be admired by even the most serious collectors. These three timepieces are among the highlights.

Bloom’s vintage 1950s Rolex Milgauss 6543 was designed in the atomic age and was Rolex’s first watch made for people working within magnetic fields.

BRITISH ACTOR ORLANDO BLOOM IS MAKING THIS ERA HIS OWN. YOU CAN DEPEND ON HIM FOR A SHOW WORTH WATCHING—OR A WATCH WORTH SHOWING. By Daria Meoli Put it down, perhaps, to a sense of timing. At 22, days after graduating from London’s Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Orlando Bloom was cast in Peter Jackson’s epic—and epically successful—Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Canterbury, England, native immediately followed up his role as Legolas by playing Will Turner in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Bloom has described his early career as feeling like a “rocket to the moon.” Now at 41, Bloom spends less time swashbuckling and more time on smaller passion projects and raising his 7-year-old son, Flynn Christopher Bloom. On-screen, Bloom has some of his biggest star turns accessorized with swords and elf ears; off-screen, as befits a master of timing, he’s an enthusiastic luxury watch collector. Bloom has a penchant for vintage Rolexes, and his collection includes an ultra-rare 1950s Rolex Milgauss 6543 with black rotating bezel and a vintage Rolex Submariner 6538 Big Crown, the model worn by Sean Connery as James Bond in Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger. Proving that a man is never fully dressed without a watch, Bloom paired a burgundy Prada smoking

jacket and black tuxedo pants with his Bremont AC1 when he escorted on-again-off-again girlfriend Katy Perry to the 2016 Met Gala. Bloom is a practicing Buddhist and a humanitarian. In 2009 he auctioned off several of his valuable watches to raise funds for UNICEF, a global children’s charity for which he is a goodwill ambassador. Pieces on the block included a 1960s Breitling Navitimer 806 and a 1973 Rolex Explorer II 1655 (nicknamed the “Steve McQueen Rolex,” despite a lack of evidence to prove that the screen legend ever owned this model). Months after the auction, a less altruistic organization took possession of Bloom’s prized collection. During the infamous “Bling Ring” crime spree, a group of teenagers from the Hollywood Hills broke into Bloom’s Los Angeles home and stole his watches. Eventually, police apprehended the teens, and Bloom’s watches were returned. The incident hasn’t diminished the actor’s passion for collecting. Whether he is wearing a Patek Philippe Nautilus while out to lunch with Flynn or an IWC Big Pilot 5002 while taking red carpet selfies on Instagram, Bloom continues to mark time in style. And his day is far from done.

Bloom’s IWC Big Pilot 5002 is impressively large at 46mm and has a simple military design that makes it a standout.

One of the most famous Rolex designs, the Submariner is known as the James Bond watch and is built for adventure. This diver’s watch has the ability to resist water pressure down to 1,000 feet.

The 26 atolls comprise 1,192 small islands, of which 202 are inhabited, and 90 resort islands offer unspoiled nature and unrivaled privacy. The Maldives’ name is derived from the Sanskrit term for “garland of islands.” Consisting of 99

percent water, this archipelago is home to a spectacular array of marine life. There are extensive coral reefs, and scuba diving is a huge draw for experts and beginners, offering the opportunity to get up close to sea turtles, eagle rays, whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, eels, puffers, lobsters, clams and a wide variety of colorful fish. Divers can even go on a guided fluorescent night dive or snorkel and see coral and other organisms glow in neon colors as if they were under a black light. Tourists can experience the surreal when they swim with whale sharks, one of the world’s largest mammals, at Manta Point. For visitors who prefer to keep their heads above water, chartering a fishing vessel and taking a traditional dhoni boat to watch dolphins frolic at sunset are hard-to-resist options too. The islands can be a spiritual place for those looking to de-stress. The Maldives’ culture reflects a fusion of Buddhism and Islam that dates back to 300 B.C. Many resorts offer sunrise and sunset yoga, wellness retreats and Ayurveda-influenced spa treatments. After the sun goes down, Maldives has stunning views of the night sky. Because it’s located just above the Equator, both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres’ stars are visible. While a blanket on the beach can make for cozy stargazing, visitors can see the stars up close with a powerful telescope located at Anantara Kihavah’s open-air observatory and cocktail bar. Not all visitors to Maldives are on a pilgrimage to commune with nature. Some are there for the party. At Finolhu, a resort in Baa Atoll,

pleasure seekers rejoice in a beach-party vibe that features internationally acclaimed DJs and three-day long festivals hosted throughout the year. So, are there accommodations that justify the 20-plus hour flight from the U.S.? That’d be a yes. Ranked on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List for 2018, the Cheval Blanc Randheli resort in the northwestern Maldives is a pearl of opulence. Developed by LVMH Hotel Management and designed by Jean-Michel Gathy, it has 45 villas, some over water with reef access right outside the door. Each has its own pool stretching the full width of the villa; hammocks, sun lounges and day beds adorn the decks, with sunken seating areas for room-service dining. Guests who fancy a game of tennis can hop aboard a five-minute boat ride to Maakhurandhoo Island. Built in accordance with Australian Open standards, these courts have hosted Roger Federer. Amilla Fushi, located on Baa Atoll, is all glitz and glam, with stark white architecture, sculptural furniture, oversized sofas and a fabulous pool. Outfitted with enormous daybeds, large soaking tubs, two showers and suites of entertainment, individual villas also include private pools and a katheeb (butler) to ensure that a guest’s every whim is attended to. Families can have a blast with unlimited watersports, creative children’s menus and a kids’ club stocked with amenities to engage youngsters from toddlers to teens. For guests who want to be the one and only party on the island, the Four Seasons Private Island at Voavah is the choice. Designed to accommodate parties of up to 22, travelers can expect total personalization from the moment they touch down by seaplane. The remote location does not compromise on access to upscale amenities. Guests have 24/7 use of a 62-

foot yacht, which can be taken out for a sunset cruise, to the best dive spots or to spend an overnight afloat in one of the cabins. The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli resort is a spa lover’s nirvana. Set on the private island of Vommuli, it has 77 palatial villas spread across 23 acres dense with palms and pandani. At the island’s center, a fitness and recreation complex employs a naturopathic doctor who administers acupuncture. And before it’s time to enjoy dinner at Alba, the property’s Mediterranean restaurant, guests can clean up with a manicure and blow-dry at the on-site salon. When they’ve had enough relaxation, a concierge can organize a number of excursions, such as a dolphin cruise, private island picnics and big-game fishing. For guests who don’t want to sacrifice environmentally sustainable practices or luxury, Soneva Jani, located on Noonu Atoll, is worth a stay. The resort is built across three small islands encircling a lagoon. The biggest island is 150 acres and has 32 villas, two restaurants serving organic food prepared by Michelin-starred guest chefs, a scuba and watersports center and an Ayurvedic spa. Every villa is personalized with choice of pillow type as well as fragrance: bergamot, lemongrass, orange or peppermint. Villas also are stocked with a guest’s favorite beverages and cocktails. While the Maldives offers visitors a wealth of experiences, the islands may be best enjoyed by listening to the ocean lap against the shore, letting your toes sink into the sand and sipping a cool drink while you do absolutely nothing at all.

LUX Birthstone JANUARY

JULY

This beautiful stone, which is most commonly red but can be found in a range of other colors, symbolizes peace, prosperity and good health. Some say it even has the power to give the wearer eternal happiness, health and wealth.

It is believed to amplify energy, heighten awareness, promote courage and bring success in wealth, love and battle. For centuries, royalty has emphasized its ruling status by wearing the crimson gems in their crowns, jewelry and vestments.

Garnet

FEBRUARY Amethyst

Amethyst is associated with qualities of peace, courage and stability. It was once believed to prevent intoxication—amethystos means “not drunk” in ancient Greek.

MARCH Aquamarine

The serenely colored aquamarine invokes the tranquility of its namesake, the sea. This gemstone was believed to protect sailors, as well as to guarantee a safe voyage. The unique color of aquamarine is said to cool the temper, allowing the wearer to remain calm and level headed.

APRIL Diamond

Diamonds are a girl’s (or boy’s) best friend. This stone is the hardest gemstone and is made of just one element: carbon. Diamonds come in several colors, including yellow, red, pink, blue and green, ranging in intensity from faint to vivid.

MAY

Emerald This stone is often favored by the rich and famous to wear as statement pieces for big events. The emerald is a symbol of loyalty, new beginnings, peace and security, making it not only a beautiful gem to wear, but also a meaningful gift to be treasured by the receiver.

JUNE Pearl

In many cultures, pearls symbolize purity and innocence, which is why it’s tradition for a bride to wear pearls on her wedding day. Pearls have been used as adornment for centuries as they believed pearls were tears of the gods.

AUGUST Peridot

Peridot forms deep inside the earth’s mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanoes. Egypt was the primary source of the peridot, called the “Gem of the Sun.”

SEPTEMBER Sapphire

Sapphire symbolizes nobility, truth, sincerity and faithfulness. It has decorated the robes of royalty and clergy members for centuries. This stone is said to focus the mind, encourage self-discipline and channel higher powers.

OCTOBER

Opal or Tourmaline Opal has been regarded as the luckiest and most magical of all gems because it can show all colors. It was thought to have the power to preserve the life. Tourmaline is available in a wide variety of colors. Since no two are exactly alike, this is a one-of-a-kind gift for any individual.

NOVEMBER Citrine & Topaz

If you are born in November, you can choose between two different gemstones: topaz and citrine. Both are known for their calming energies, bringing warmth and fortune to those who wear them.

DECEMBER

Tanzanite or Zircon Tanzanite is the blue and violet variety of the mineral zoisite. The gemstone was discovered in Northern Tanzania in 1967, so it’s one of the youngest gemstones used in jewelry. In the Middle Ages, zircon was thought to induce sound sleep, drive away evil spirits and promote riches, honor and wisdom.

SPIRITS

18: A very good year YES, IT’S 2018, AND IN THE WORLD OF SPIRITS, YOU’LL FIND IT HARD TO PASS UP THE TASTE OF WELL-AGED LIQUOR. SO HERE ARE FIVE—EACH 18 YEARS OLD— THAT WILL HIT THE SPOT. What’s in a number? In Judaism, there’s a belief that 18 is lucky, while the same number is associated with abundance and wealth in Chinese folklore. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a hold of and sip one (or all) of these under-the-radar spirits. They might not result in riches, but we know you’ll treasure their tastes.

The story behind this rum’s name is almost as rich as the liquor itself. “Kirk and Sweeney” was the name of a wooden schooner used to smuggle rum from the Caribbean to the United States during Prohibition. Luckily, connoisseurs today don’t have to wait as long for a taste of the copper-colored rum. The liquor is crafted from raw sugarcane and exudes the aroma of dried fruits, hints of honey and warm vanilla.

This straight rye whiskey is the oldest release of Lock Stock & Barrel to date—making it quite the coveted craft liquor. It is a robust cut whiskey, having been unfiltered after its distillation. The aging process tames its spicy overtones and brings out hints of candied ginger, vanilla and cherry. And despite its high proof, this rye is smooth enough to be enjoyed without ice.

After traditional aging in oak casks and additional aging in port barrels, just 800 bottles are available of this single cask Gelas Bas-Armagnac. In the mouth, this brandy expresses notes of crystallized clementine, candied apple and lemon, and a hint of smooth blackberry cream. The distinct aromas of caramel, toasted oak and vanilla create a pleasant experience on the nose.

They grow up so fast! And this Scotch whisky is especially mature for its age, thanks to the watchful eyes and patience of Glenfiddich’s master distillers. They individually number each bottle and supervise the aging to ensure proper maturation. From its inception to formative years, Glenfiddich whisky undergoes an intense marrying period so its fruity and rich oak flavors can intertwine and fully develop.

75

Fuenteseca Reserva tequila was aged for six years in Atotonilco El Alto before spending 12 years aging in El Chapingo. It is free of the artificial coloring and flavors now found in some añejo tequilas on the market. The natural process allows the liquor to develop its authentic gold coloring, creamy vanilla taste and palate-pleasing cedar and sandalwood undertones.

TIMELESS ITALIAN CRAFTSMANSHIP BRIGHTENS A FASHIONCONSCIOUS AGE.

78

LUX BOND & GREEN

By Robert Haynes-Peterson

When fashion seeks the proverbial pot of gold, it looks to Florence, Italy. The brand Ponte Vecchio Gioielli was created by Ugo Calà, who began apprenticing with goldsmiths on the bridge in the 1960s, and his friend Giancarlo Campani. Inspired by traditional Florentine craftsmanship but designed for a modern, fashion-driven audience, by the 1990s it was changing how Italian fine jewelry and fashion interacted. Designs draw upon the art, ambience and splendor of Florence, the company’s base, and the Ponte Vecchio bridge (also known as the “Bridge of Gold”) over the Arno River, home to countless jewelers and goldsmiths for centuries. Today, Ugo’s son, Francesco, helms the business. “I decided to take over the company they [his dad and Campani] created and to put into practice all their teachings,” he says. “With this information, lots of energy and my fantastic team, it’s time to write my story.” This story is reflected in Ponte Vecchio’s collections. Stylized gold “pearls” in the Medici collection pay tribute to the influential 16thcentury political family. Vega incorporates mounted diamonds on platinum mesh for added movement and shimmer. The elegant Nobile line combines fashion and additional comfort through braided gold mesh, which feels soft and elastic to the touch. And Love Locks celebrates a longtime tradition (now officially banned) of expressing one’s love through padlocks attached to railings around a bust of Benvenuto Cellini, a 16th century goldsmith and sculptor, who continues to inspire Italian jewelers and artists. Though fashion changes seasonally, Ponte Vecchio Gioielli’s heart of gold beats on. The attention to detail that is the brand’s heritage is highlighted in touches like sgriffatura perforations (originally conceived by Cellini) to draw in extra light around set jewelry. Francesco says he and his team continue the traditions of Florence and of Ponte Vecchio jewelry with the goal of bringing those traditions “into the modern world.”

for the groom DAVID YURMAN OFFERS MODERN UPDATES TO HIS SELECTION OF MEN’S WEDDING BANDS. David Yurman’s men’s bands range from classic to extremely expressive, executed in both precious and innovative metals, including black titanium, forged carbon and colored diamonds. The collection was created to address the lack of options on the market outside of the classic white- and yellow-gold simple bands. According to the David Yurman design team, it has become increasingly important to grooms to have different styles to choose from so they can find what fits their personalities. Men are now buying multiple bands rather than just one, which better allows them to express themselves and adapt to changing occasions and circumstances.
