WELCOME

Illumannations JOIN US FOR A LITTLE TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE. 2018 IS BRINGING WITH IT MILESTONE NUMBERS FOR MANN’S JEWELERS.

70 YEARS AGO In 1948, Irving and Gertrude Mann followed their dream and opened up a shoebox of a jewelry store at 158 Clinton Ave. South in downtown Rochester, which was thriving at the time. Midtown Plaza, lauded as the first indoor shopping mall in the United States, was a short walk away. Main Street was bustling. Rochester Business Institute was next door, and the Xerox and Lincoln towers cut a distinctive shape into the Rochester skyline. In the beginning, Irving worked all day at the store and Gert joined him after putting in a full day as a secretary. Together they worked hard, selling jewelry, diamonds, pens, watches, class rings, toasters, shavers and the like—whatever they could to pay the rent. Mann’s Jewelers on Clinton Avenue developed a reputation for honesty, integrity and friendship. Everyone was welcomed with a smile.

50 YEARS AGO After working together to grow their business in downtown Rochester, Irving and Gert were given some potentially devastating news. Rochester’s Urban Renewal program was being enacted, and Mann’s Jewelers would have to leave its location. It was Gert who noticed the “For Rent” sign in a vacant store in a strip plaza, at the corner of Clover Street and Monroe Avenue. They were advised against signing a lease at that location, because a few other businesses had tried that space previously and failed. Headstrong as always, Gert was sure of her instincts, and she and Irv signed a lease in 1968. Fifty years later, we are still in the plaza that was once home to Loblaws and Key Drugs. Over the years, Mann’s Jewelers continued to expand. Our home in the plaza shifted as we moved into a bigger space next door, and then later knocked down a wall to combine two footprints into one large store, taking over the original drugstore and bringing our space to 6,000 square feet. The expanded space houses some of the finest brands in the world, a goldsmith shop with skilled artisans, a Rolex-trained watchmaker as well as our entire corporate staff. The Monroe Avenue area, which at one time felt very rural, is now a booming thoroughfare, shuttling shoppers to the best Rochester has to offer.

15 YEARS AGO With many stories to share and with beautiful jewelry to show, Mann’s Jewelers decided to create a magazine for our customers and the community. Designed to celebrate life’s most important moments, Accent Magazine became a consistent way for our family to share our passion with you. Published twice a year since the fall of 2003, we are proud to say that we are now celebrating 15 years of creating a magazine. We never lose our enthusiasm for sharing the best of what we do with you each spring and fall! Thank you, Rochester, for your trust, your business, your friendship and the wonderful memories.

fabulous in rochester ROCHESTER NATIVE AND STYLE GURU COURTNEY WINSLOW CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS IN VINTAGE STYLE.

When I finally broke away from the beautiful summer to write this article, I asked my girlfriend for some advice. Well, I didn’t really ask her, but if you know my friend Sassy, she offered it up anyway. After being forced to listen to me debate the trends, she said, “Oh, come on, everything new is old and old is new. Done. Now let’s have a rosé.” After reading some runway reviews, it turns out, she’s right. It’s déjà vu. Leopard print stirrup pants? Totally. Neon? Yup. Scrunchies? Holy moly yes. But this time around, I’m pretty much sure I can nail it without getting in trouble for raiding my moms closet and sneaking out to get a tattoo. I sure do wish I could find that silver leather mini skirt. It went perfectly with my LeSportsac full of mini booze bottles. Man, remembering I’m in my 40s is going to be really, really hard this winter. Note to self: Do not get “The Rachel” haircut again. To help you keep the “old is new” trends straight, I will go through them decade by decade. That way when you are digging through your basement, you know which box to unpack. 1920s and 1930s: Did you know that during the 1920s, America became obsessed with kissing marathons, eating marathons and dance marathons? Dancing in the roaring 20s meant plenty of fringe. But these silky strands are not only for your dresses—the modern twist has been updated for your jewelry. Fine chains of gold swing perfectly from your ear when you’re out for the holidays. Then, finish off your party outfit with a long and exaggerated cape coat to keep you toasty. 1940s and 1950s: I’m all too familiar with the good girl versus bad girl battle. My inner rebel is always looking for a way to throw an edgy item into the mix. In the 40s, Dior debuted the “new look,” which was a perfectly flirty yet proper silhouette—a dress with a polka dot fitted bodice and full skirt. But the Greaser-inspired black leather jacket of the 50s paired with the most perfect white tee, cat eye sunglasses and deconstructed denim makes every girl want to run away on a motorcycle. Ahh, I feel your pain, Olivia Newton John. The struggle is real. 1960s: We can thank the British Invasion for the mod mini skirt. This season, skirts and matching suit coats are even more fabulous in color combinations of the boldest brights. Add some Austin Powers vibe

Courtney wears necklaces, bracelets and a two-finger ring by Nanis, earrings by Sutra, an emerald and diamond flower ring and an antique cushion-cut diamond engagement ring. All jewelry from Mann’s Jewelers.

to your everyday jewelry with rainbow-colored gems stacked around your engagement ring. Or, go all out with a colorful faux fur to make a bold political statement. Big hair don’t care; pile it high on your head (with some help from Great Lengths extensions from Sooz). Shimmering metallic and plastic accessories are on trend, too. A pair of sequin silver knee-high boots will be sure to keep you skipping down Abbey Road. 1970s: Mammas might not let their babies grow up to be cowboys but they sure do love to dress like one. This season, designers headed out West to the dude ranch for inspiration. Saddle leather accessories and patchwork dresses are cowboy chic. It’s a little Rhinestone Cowboy and a lot Little House on the Prairie. Billowy dresses are part Bohemian, part Victorian. Smocking details, sheer plaid fabrics and bandana prints are the new romantic. 1980s: The Members Only tagline was, “When you put it on, something happens.” Enough said. This is the decade that first made “ugly” cool. Take the belt bag, previously known as the “fanny pack,” for example. This season it’s velvet, metallic, studded and logo’ed. Mini dresses inspired by the MTV revolution are finished off with ruching details, the gathering along the side can make even a brocade fabric sexy. Oh man, and back in the day jewelry had its own ZIP Code. Heavy rope chains and thick gold bangles are best served up Run-DMC style. Let’s not forget that neon and bright colors aren’t only for the summer. The ski slopes were full of these hot colors back at Swain. One-piece ski suits have got to make a comeback; I mean it’s basically a romper for the snow. I could go on and on about the 80s, but instead I’ll leave you with some of my favorite highlights…. Favorite songs: “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler and “Invincible” by Pat Benatar. My favorite movies were: Flashdance and Legend of Billie Jean (a brother-sister duo that inspired a generation of kick-ass hairstyles). 1990s through 2000s: This is my jam. I just wish that I could go back in time to an apartment on Audubon Street with my best friend, dance to Prince and watch the Friends finale. Getting dressed was like running a marathon…drunk. Most of the time we couldn’t locate the right color tights, and we hardly ever left the house without wearing something in crushed velvet. Plaids were as much a staple then as they are now. I always wore a plaid jumper when I was pretending to go to class. This season, try mixing different colored plaid pieces together…Cher from Clueless nailed this. The runway look to shoot for is mixed materials: a plaid wool coat and a nylon plaid bag. When heading out for date night, slip on a baby doll dress, some Doc Martens, an oversized men’s blazer and door knocker gold earrings. For a trip out to Oak and Apple Cidery, fall in love with a baby tee and oversized baggy pants cinched at the waist. Please don’t question this decade’s fashion genius. I mean who would have guessed that one of the Spice Girls would become not only a fashion icon but a fabulous designer? Keep the memories alive, girl. Don’t forget where you came from and share your flare Friday’s button style. Sing loud. While in the car the other day I belted out Madonna’s “Who’s That Girl,” and my son Cash asked, “Isn’t Madonna dead?” I almost swerved off the road at the sacrilegious comment made by my offspring. After making the sign of the cross, I explained that I have been lucky enough to see Madge twice in concert and she is still very much alive. I mean, honestly, I send you to a progressive school for a reason, kid. So what now? Well, my advice is to take a little from each decade. Dance your heart out in an animal print mini dress, forget your age, forget your era. Bounce up and down until your knees hurt, shout until you lose your voice and cheer each other on as you do your best Humpty Dance.

CLASSIC DIAMOND RING Since the late 1400s, diamond rings have been worn on the ring finger of the left hand, which symbolically has a vein that runs directly to the heart. Although a round brilliant-cut diamond is still the first choice of brides to represent commitment, emerald-cut radiant and oval diamonds have become close seconds. However, scintillating diamonds are not just for brides. Make a big statement with a significant diamond—a classic diamond ring will forever be on trend, should be worn every day, and will be enjoyed and admired for generations to come. Available in a wide range of diamond sizes and qualities. As shown, ring with 5.01 ct. emerald-cut center diamond and 1.92 cts. of straight-cut side stones in a handmade platinum mounting. $103,600

DAVID YURMAN An icon of innovative design, David Yurman is America’s foremost jewelry and timepiece brand. Founded in New York City by David, a sculptor, and his wife Sybil, a painter, David Yurman was built on a passion for art and design. When they began collaborating, their intention was not to start a business, but simply to make beautifully designed objects to wear, imbued with their unique artistic sensibilities and their distinctive point of view. Throughout every David Yurman collection, cable is used in innovative and beautiful ways, as a contrast to smooth polished metal, as an accent motif, in a clasp or carved in stone. Sometimes, as a subtle signature, the cable motif appears on the inside of a ring or back of a pendant where only the wearer will see it. Bracelets available in sterling silver and 18K yellow gold. From $1,100

HUEB The Hueb woman is effortlessly elegant. Guided by her innate sense of style and self-assured nature, she’s confident and discerning. Her style is modern, yet timeless. Hueb is created for women, by women, spanning three generations. The collection is comprised of diamonds and gemstones with accents inspired by the color, energy and natural beauty of Brazil. The Hueb philosophy is simple: Luxury should be inspiring and celebratory, not intimidating. The Hueb family wants women to celebrate life every day, and live passionately, without restraints.

Both hailing from Indian jewelry families, Arpita and Divyanshu Navlakha met at the GIA World Headquarters in Carlsbad, CA. Once married and armed with their Gemology diplomas, they set out to create a fine jewelry brand. Sutra, meaning “a collection of sacred verses” in Sanskrit, is meant to be a sacred part of a collection to each who treasures a piece. Arpita drives the design direction, while her husband relies on his expertise in fine gem sourcing to supply the unusual stones that are the foundation of their creative vision. Now a brand that is seen regularly on the red carpet, Sutra has developed a large and appreciative fan base of celebrities and collectors. Earrings with emeralds and diamonds in blackened 18K white gold. $19,950

ROBERTO COIN Roberto Coin was born in the city of Vincenza, a magical place that also is known as the City of Gold, an auspicious beginning for a fine jewelry designer. Driven by his innate love for the world of art and fashion, Roberto conveys this passion through exceptional jewels and distinctive collections that are elegant works of art. Roberto Coin signs each one of his pieces with a small ruby set into the jewel, in direct contact with the skin of the wearer. BACCARAT Throughout history, Baccarat has toasted kings, emperors, presidents and poets alike, and continues to do so today. For over 250 years, Baccarat has stood for a contemporary “Art de Vivre” in its timeless collections and iconic pieces. Brought to life by breath and fire, Baccarat continues to celebrate perfection in the creation of every piece. SAPPHIRE—THE GEMSTONE OF KINGS Throughout history the allure of a gem-quality sapphire has never waned, and even today remains an enduring favorite. Tough enough to withstand daily wear, brides often select a sapphire instead of a diamond as an engagement ring. The lore of sapphires includes the stone’s ability to calm nerves and bring about mental clarity, as well as enhancing wisdom, sincerity and good fortune. Most popular in intoxicating velvety blue hues, sapphires also are found in a rainbow of colors, such as pink, purple, orange, green and yellow. Ring with 4.20 ct. cushion-cut sapphire and 1.01 cts. of diamonds in platinum. $39,900

ALEX SEPKUS In searching for vocabulary to describe Alex Sepkus and his eponymous collection of fine jewelry, one realizes it’s impossible to compare it to anything else. Born in Lithuania, Alex began making jewelry with tools he specifically designed and constructed. An intellectual eccentric, Alex sees the world as a big, magnificent mosaic. Each component’s small and integral to the overarching theme, leading to his artwork containing details so intricate they can best be seen under a magnifying glass. Tremendous attention to detail, carefully hand-applied finishes and glorious gemstones in unique color combinations are all hallmarks of Alex Sepkus. Available in a range of gemstone and metal colors.

MIKIMOTO What is it about pearls that make remarkable women of every age want to wear them every day? Pearls are powerful, and throughout history have been the personal style signature of Queen Elizabeth, Jacqueline Kennedy and Coco Chanel. Current pearl aficionados include Oprah, Scarlett Johansson and Rihanna, who choose interesting ways to adorn themselves with these illuminating gems from the sea, layering multiple strands or showcasing shoulder duster earrings. Since 1893, Mikimoto has been synonymous with superior quality and timeless elegance with sophisticated, modern design. To wear Mikimoto is to know you have the pleasure of wearing the finest cultured pearls in the world. 32 strand of 7.5mmx7mm Akoya pearls with 18K white gold signature clasp. $7,590

DIAMOND ETERNITY BAND The wedding band is a symbol of devotion and a commitment for two people to love and cherish one another for the rest of their days. Worn since ancient Egyptian times and originally constructed by weaving plants together around the finger to form a ring, wedding bands have been designed with a very specific symbolic meaning. A circle has no beginning or end and is therefore a symbol of eternity. It is endless and eternal, just as love should be. While the styling of wedding rings has become more modern in many ways, there is still nothing as classic and timeless as a circle of diamonds for a representation of your love. Diamond bands are available in a wide range of diamond shapes, total weights and metals.

precious partnerships Robert Procop, Beverly Hills jeweler, is notorious for his jewelry expertise, passion for the most fabulous natural-colored gemstones on earth and his hush-hush VIP clientele. In fact, we may never have known one of his biggest fans is Angelina Jolie, if it wasn’t for their charitable collaboration. After working with Brad Pitt to design her engagement ring, Jolie and Procop united to create a collection known as Style of Jolie, which benefits the Education Partnership for Children in Conflict, a charity co-founded by the actress. The charity builds schools and provides education for children living through devastating conflicts and in areas of high refugee concentrations. For example, the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict opened an all-girls school in Afghanistan. The primary school, located in a region that traditionally puts boys’ education above girls’, educates 200 to 300 students. Both Procop and Jolie pledged to donate 100% of the profits to the charity. In a statement to E! about the line, Jolie explained, “Beyond enjoying the artistic satisfaction of designing these jewels, we are inspired by knowing our work also is serving the mutual goal of providing for children in need.” continued...

The newest Style of Jolie designs, which include emeralds, citrines, green beryls, black star sapphires and black spinels, are strong yet fluid and sensual, powerfully contemporary yet effortlessly elegant. Procop told Forbes about one particular ring in the line featuring a 27ct. emerald: “When the stone is sold we give the money to the charity and then we build another school.” Other pieces include an emerald necklace featuring 44 cushion-cut emeralds, weighing 103.48 cts., pear-shaped emerald earrings and a citrine tablet ring. Procop also recently collaborated with actress and model, Brooke Shields, to create a collection called Legacy Brooke. Those who are familiar with Procop’s work will recognize the variety of statement gems that are showcased in specific palettes and unusual shapes. Most notably in the collection a rare sugarloaf shape is used and mirrors four facets that are shaped into a pyramid-like finish or a more rounded cabochon finish. The Legacy Brooke collection features a palette of purple, green and aqua blue using amethyst, peridot, topaz and emerald. The longtime friends share a love for philanthropy. Proceeds from the collection benefit the House of Ruth charity, which is a transitional housing shelter for victims of domestic violence. The organization provides shelter, prevention programs, opportunities and education to those transitioning back to normality after suffering abuse. Recently, Procop has acquired 12 new homes in support of further permanent housing for survivors. Just as charity is his passion, so is the joy of locating large gems and crafting magnificent settings around them. It is this talent for gem sourcing, combined with design ability that has resulted in his namesake collection, Robert Procop Exceptional Jewels, which has been placed in only the finest quality, high-end retailers inlcuding Mann’s Jewelers.

WHAT DO THE PHOTOGRAPHIC SUBJECTS OF THIS FORMER TV ANCHORMAN HAVE IN COMMON? THEY’RE COLORFUL, ETHEREAL—AND WET. Harry Martin’s love for photography was born at age 9. He worked in news, shooting 16-millimeter film and videotape and covering political conventions. Though his TV news career brought him out from behind the camera to the anchor desk, he never lost his passion for images. Now 66, he’s back to that passion in a special way—taking fashion photographs of subjects who are underwater. Martin most recently sat at the anchor desk for the stations My9NJ (WWOR) and Fox 5 New York (WNYW). As his broadcast career was heating up, he continued to pursue photography as a hobby. He also became immersed in another interest: scuba diving. While on a scuba excursion with his family, Martin began taking underwater pictures of his children. The light through the water created both a real and abstract vibe in his photos. Inspiration struck and once he found a willing model, Martin cranked up the heat in his backyard pool in Cresskill, N.J., to 80 degrees, tossed a metal backdrop into the deep end and created an underwater studio. As a reporter and anchor, Martin was an expert storyteller. That instinct for communicating great stories shines through in his photographs, which remind one of the late Philippe Halsman’s photos of artist Salvador Dali leaping in the air. (If only Dali were still around for a diving immersion!) Part of the allure of Martin’s dreamy underwater series is the way his work reflects the personalities and backstories of his subjects. While he often uses professional models, he also has shot an emergency room nurse, a nuclear chemist, a former Penthouse model and a founder of a Costa Rican community center who works with the United Nations on clean water initiatives in developing countries. The photographer began the “Harry Martin Underwater” series in 2013 and continues to build the collection, shooting from April through November each year. His work has been shown in several galleries in the Northeast, and he participated in the Neiman Marcus “Art of Fashion” program. He also counts a boutique jeweler and dress designers as commercial clients. So, after five years of underwater photo shoots, who is at the top of Martin’s dream subject list? Lady Gaga. He has said he is drawn to her adventurous spirit.

“There is no common thread that runs through [this collection],” underwater photographer Harry Martin has said. “Every picture is different—some graphically oriented, some dreamy, and others evocative of motion.”

Martin has said the artistic surprises he finds in shooting underwater are jaw-dropping. He has to anticipate how the water is going to affect the models’ clothes and hair. Because of the way the light behaves, shooting underwater gives Martin’s work a dream-like quality.

ALWAYS IN STYLE, THESE CLASSIC JEWELS ADD A TOUCH OF SIMPLE, LUSTROUS ELEGANCE. By Rita Guarna Whatever oyster first dreamed of pearls had no idea the gems would shine for millennia. Pearls pop up in the Bible and the Koran; were prized by the ancient cultures of Egypt, India and China; and were a big reason—so the historian Suetonius tells us—that Julius Caesar invaded Britain. The costly gem symbolized purity, but also wealth, as usually only royalty or nobility could afford pearls. With the advent of cultured pearls in the early 1900s, that changed. Since famous French fashion designer Coco Chanel incorporated them into mainstream fashion almost a century ago, pearls have become the accessory that makes a look—and never gets old. Today, a new generation of celebrities and tastemakers is appropriating this timeless gem, giving pearls modern meaning and edge. Far from Park Avenue, fashionable women of all ages

are throwing on strands of pearls with everything from black lace cocktail dresses to blue jeans and white T-shirts. From the concert stage to the red carpet, British singer Rita Ora has used a smattering of differentsized pearls to create youthful yet ethereal hair accessories. Singer-songwriter Rihanna rocks pearls with sexy multi-strand collars and layers upon layers of matinee-length strands. Actresses Emma Stone and Lupita Nyong’o have added luster beyond their accessories, wearing pearlcovered gowns for black-tie events. Actress Jessica Alba has been photographed many times wearing pearl earrings. From decidedly modern black pearl-drop earrings to a pair of hanging gold chains punctuated with small luminescent pearls to front-and-back bauble pearl studs, Alba proves that pearl earrings

transition seamlessly from day to night. Whether you prefer the iconic five-strand pearl necklace Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Kate Middleton’s funky white pearl lariat, there are many trendy ways to wear pearls now. For a preppy look, headbands, hair clips and other hair accessories are getting the spotlight. For a more avant-garde approach, pearls are being used as accents in art-inspired sculptural earrings. The unique shapes and textures of baroque pearls make the perfect accessories for a free-spirited boho style. For traditionalists looking for a twist on a classic, the Gucci loafer received an update with pearl-studded heels. But perhaps the final word on pearls came, with fitting simplicity, a half-century ago from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. “Pearls,” she said, “are always appropriate.”

THE GEM OF QUEENS Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but pearls are a woman’s timeless companion. Long known as “the queen of gems” because of their popularity with royalty (among the few who could afford them), pearls have gone mainstream without losing their elegance. Today’s celebrities are making sophisticated and sexy fashion statements with them. From Scarlett Johansson’s luxurious multi-strand, layered look to Jennifer Lawrence’s chic front-and-back black pearl-stud earrings, young fashionistas are donning this classic gem with bold, modern style.

MAKE THESE ALLURING SOUTH ASIAN ISLANDS YOUR PRIVATE PARADISE—IN ONE OF FIVE CAN’T-MISS RESORTS. By Daria Meoli

Known as the “Money Isles” since the 2nd century, the Maldives (officially the Republic of Maldives) is a jet-set destination synonymous with exotic luxury. John Legend proposed to Chrissy Teigen here because it’s so romantic. The Beckhams spend family vacations here because it’s so posh. Prince William and Kate Middleton had a sexy getaway here because the string of luminescent islands is so secluded. Celebrities such as Madonna, Naomie Harris and Michael Phelps flock to this island nation because of the azure waters and sugar-white sand beaches. Located in the Indian Ocean southwest of India, the Maldives strikes a balance between relaxation and adventure while providing visitors with a sense that they are uncovering one of nature’s hidden gems without sacrificing modern comfort. The 26 atolls comprise 1,192 small islands, of which 202 are inhabited, and 90 resort islands offer unspoiled nature and unrivaled privacy. The Maldives’ name is derived from the Sanskrit term for “garland of islands.” Consisting of 99 MANN’S 59

percent water, this archipelago is home to a spectacular array of marine life. There are extensive coral reefs, and scuba diving is a huge draw for experts and beginners, offering the opportunity to get up close to sea turtles, eagle rays, whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, eels, puffers, lobsters, clams and a wide variety of colorful fish. Divers can even go on a guided fluorescent night dive or snorkel and see coral and other organisms glow in neon colors as if they were under a black light. Tourists can experience the surreal when they swim with whale sharks, one of the world’s largest mammals, at Manta Point. For visitors who prefer to keep their heads above water, chartering a fishing vessel and taking a traditional dhoni boat to watch dolphins frolic at sunset are hard-to-resist options too. The islands can be a spiritual place for those looking to de-stress. The Maldives’ culture reflects a fusion of Buddhism and Islam that dates back to 300 B.C. Many resorts offer sunrise and sunset yoga, wellness retreats and Ayurveda-influenced spa treatments. After the sun goes down, Maldives has stunning views of the night sky. Because it’s located just above the Equator, both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres’ stars are visible. While a blanket on the beach can make for cozy stargazing, visitors can see the stars up close with a powerful telescope located at Anantara Kihavah’s open-air observatory and cocktail bar. Not all visitors to Maldives are on a pilgrimage to commune with nature. Some are there for the party. At Finolhu, a resort in Baa Atoll,

TIRED OF THE SAME-OLD, SAME-OLD? WAKE UP YOUR TASTE BUDS WITH NUTRITIOUS, FLAVORFUL DISHES FROM THE WESTERN PART OF THIS SURPRISING CONTINENT. By Donna Rolando Savvy chefs like to keep up with food trends, and one thing that’s “on trend” this year is the cuisine of West Africa. If you haven’t yet taken a gustatory jaunt to that corner of the planet, sampling the stews, rice dishes and desserts for which it’s known, there’s no time like now. West African food is flavorful, but not too spicy, and—in the style of good home cooking—a healthy choice. In fact, when it comes to quality, the West African diet fared better than its U.S. counterpart in a study published in The Lancet Global Health. It’s the reliance on veggies, legumes, staple starches and lean meats—not processed foods—that makes West African dishes a bounty of good nutrition. This cuisine is on the menu in many big U.S. cities these days—in eateries run by African transplants and in other restaurants whose chefs are bold enough to embrace what’s novel—so no ocean-crossing will be required to treat your taste buds to something excitingly new. Check out these menu highlights:

SENEGALESE CHICKEN YASSA From the Casamance region in the south of Senegal comes chicken yassa (or yassa poulet), a spicy stew served up in households throughout Africa. It’s also available at Senegalese restaurants around the globe, so if this is your first time with West African cooking, consider chicken yassa a good introduction. Well, that’s if you like onions. This is a dish that gets much of its flavor from caramelized onions! The chicken, beef, lamb or fish (all are right for making yassa) is marinated with oil, lemon and a dash of mustard, usually overnight. (In Africa this marinating is often necessary to soften tough meat; here in the U.S. it can make it melt in your mouth.) JOLLOF RICE This one-pot classic rice dish draws its flavor from fried and stewed tomatoes and is so engrained in African life that it’s often considered the thread that unites families. No pot of jollof is ever quite the same as another, so diverse are the ingredients that can go into the broth along with spices, onions and tomatoes. Out of chicken? Don’t worry: Pork, fish and veggies all work great in an authentic jollof. And for a real Nigerian feel, cook it over a live fire for a smoky

version known as Party Rice. The crust that forms on the bottom of the rice means you did it right! Since jollof is such a West African staple, it’s not surprising to learn that this dish knows no boundaries: Serve it at an everyday meal or dress it up with seafood for a celebration. And if you are celebrating at an African restaurant near you, consider sampling jollof. It’s often served with fried plantains and coleslaw. CAAKRI We saved the best for last—dessert! Leave the chocolate-covered cheesecake for another time; to get the full African experience, try Caakri, a dish made from fermented milk and grain and sweetened to taste. You might liken it to rice pudding, but the texture is different and the taste slightly tangy. (It contains sour cream.) The name Caakri (aka Tiakri, Chakery and several others) refers to the grain used to make this popular dessert or snack. While tradition called for common African grains like maize, black-eyed peas or millet, today’s pudding typically uses couscous prepared from wheat semolina. This pudding wasn’t always on the dessert menu. In fact, Caakri is related to a dish once served as the main meal, but that all changed with the availability of sweeteners. Today, you can sweeten your Caakri or not, depending on preference. Serve without sugar for a yogurt taste, reflecting one of its key ingredients; or with sweetener, raisins or pineapple, for a true dessert. Serve chilled for best results. So, if you are ready to take your palate-pleasing to new levels, try a taste of West Africa!

For your food tour of West Africa, sample (clockwise, from top left) Senegalese chicken yassa, peanut soup, jollof rice and caakri. No need to travel—this cuisine is a hot new American trend.

MANN’S

PEANUT SOUP This staple of the West African diet brings together a very unlikely combo from an American standpoint— tomatoes and peanuts (or ground nuts)—for a sweet and spicy sensation you’ll wish you had discovered sooner. Although there are many variations of this soup or stew, at its core are simple, familiar ingredients: nuts and sometimes meat and veggies. Ginger, herbs, garlic, Tabasco hot sauce and sweet potatoes are all used to enhance this African favorite— a sure way to provide comfort, as well as nourishment, on a rainy day. The perfect accompaniment for peanut soup is rice, plantains, potatoes and vegetables,

but in Ghana, you might bring on the fufu. Yes, that’s fufu—the name for any hot starch cooked over heat and formed into a rich paste. There’s nothing like this pounded starch, often made from fermented cassava, to make sure we get every last drop of our peanut soup. Most Africans eat fufu every day, from infancy through their senior years, and it comes in many varieties.

The story behind this rum’s name is almost as rich as the liquor itself. “Kirk and Sweeney” was the name of a wooden schooner used to smuggle rum from the Caribbean to the United States during Prohibition. Luckily, connoisseurs today don’t have to wait as long for a taste of the copper-colored rum. The liquor is crafted from raw sugarcane and exudes the aroma of dried fruits, hints of honey and warm vanilla.

In the mouth, this brandy expresses notes of crystallized clementine, candied apple and lemon, and a hint of smooth blackberry cream. The distinct aromas of caramel, toasted oak and vanilla create a pleasant experience on the nose.

They grow up so fast! And this Scotch whisky is especially mature for its age, thanks to the watchful eyes and patience of Glenfiddich’s master distillers. They individually number each bottle and supervise the aging to ensure proper maturation. From its inception to formative years, Glenfiddich whisky undergoes an intense marrying period so its fruity and rich oak flavors can intertwine and fully develop.

This straight rye whiskey is the oldest release of Lock Stock & Barrel to date—making it quite the coveted craft liquor. It is a robust cut whiskey, having been unfiltered after its distillation. The aging process tames its spicy overtones and brings out hints of candied ginger, vanilla and cherry. And despite its high proof, this rye is smooth enough to be enjoyed without ice.

Fuenteseca Reserva tequila was aged for six years in Atotonilco El Alto before spending 12 years aging in El Chapingo. It is free of the artificial coloring and flavors now found in some añejo tequilas on the market. The natural process allows the liquor to develop its authentic gold coloring, creamy vanilla taste and palate-pleasing cedar and sandalwood undertones.

HONORING ITS FEROCIOUS FOREBEARS, THE MERCEDES-BENZ AMG SL65 ROADSTER WILL MOVE YOU, THRILL YOU—AND MASSAGE YOU, TOO.

Drivers who experience the joy of racing in a sporty Mercedes-Benz AMG SL65 convertible owe a nod of gratitude to a couple of speed-obsessed Germans. In the 1960s, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher were young engineers working on the 300 SE racing engine at Daimler-Benz when the company discontinued all motorsports activities. But the pair had an unrelenting passion for speed and a vision for modeling road vehicles after racing cars. In 1967, they left Daimler-Benz to found Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach, or AMG. The two tirelessly tinkered with valves and pistons as an independent engineering firm specializing in performance improvements for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. After a successful arrangement by which AMG upgrades were available and serviceable through selected Mercedes-Benz dealers worldwide, in 1993, the two firms unveiled the C36 AMG, their first jointly developed vehicle. Today the engineering firm is owned by the German automaker and more than 50 Mercedes–AMG performance models have hit the streets. In 2018, the AMG SL65 extends the blissful union between AMG’s muscular engineering and Mercedes-Benz’s lavish design. One of the most powerful in its class, this roadster packs a punch with a 6.0-liter AMG V-12 biturbo engine that pumps out 621 horsepower. Able to go 0–60 in just 3.9 seconds, this model reaches its top speed of 186 mph in what seems like the blink of an eye. Mercedes-Benz elevates the roadster experience with Active Body Control technology. The suspension’s sensors and electronically controlled hydraulics

respond to the car’s grip in milliseconds. An automatic four-wheel level control lowers the vehicle as its speed increases to enhance aerodynamics and stability. The height also can be raised for bumpy roads or steep climbs. Like its SL forerunners, the 2018 AMG SL65 provides as much swank as it does soup. The panoramic sunroof creates an open-air feeling even when the coupe is closed. The high-tech glass controls exposure to harmful UV and infrared rays from the sun while keeping the cabin of the vehicle cool. The roof ’s electrochromatic technology automatically changes the glass from transparent to opaque based on the amount of thermal energy entering the cabin. When drivers are ready to feel the wind in their hair, the SL can be transformed to an open roadster in less than 20 seconds, even while traveling up to 25 mph. The car has 12-way power seats with memory, which are upholstered in Nappa leather. The seats also are outfitted with a neck-level heating system, a massage feature to help prevent fatigue on long trips, and adjustable lumbar, side bolsters and shoulder supports for tailored comfort. Passionate music fans will rejoice after switching on a BeoSound system designed by Bang & Olufsen engineers. Even when the wind is whipping about the cabin, 12 active speakers and 900 watts of musical power create ideal sound. With its twin-turbo V-12 muscle and superb amenities, this innovative and powerful roadster brings Aufrecht and Melcher’s passion for motorsports and design into a wide-awake 2019.

in plain sight IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN MAGIC, MAYBE YOU JUST HAVEN’T DONNED THE SAMSUNG ODYSSEY WINDOWS “MIXED REALITY” HEADSET YET.

Want to roam the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu? Dive from a cliff in Moab, Utah? Battle gladiators in Rome’s Colosseum? Oh, and you say you’d rather not leave your rec room? VR may be for you. VR, of course, is virtual reality, the technology that can take you almost anywhere—in sensory terms—and into almost any situation. It’s big for games, sure, but it’s also beginning to poke a disconcerting elbow into the world of work, where, as one website says, people can do “daily computing tasks while fully immersed in a 3D space.” You put on a headset, and suddenly you’re in a different environment—yet one that responds to your real-world commands. One of the VR devices drawing buzz in 2018 is the Samsung HMD (that stands for “head-mounted displays”) Odyssey Windows “Mixed Reality” headset with motion controllers. The Odyssey operates on the Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality platform, which was introduced in October 2017. (Mixed reality is a type of VR in which computergenerated content and real-world content can react to each other in real time.) With the Odyssey headset you can explore exotic locales and settings. And a next-level social media network, vTime, connects users from around the world—or around the block—in engaging virtual environments, such as cozy campfires, mountain cliffs and glacier tops. While those snowy mountains may be virtual, you can get fit for real. There are several available routines for people looking to buff up using a VR platform, including BOXVR virtual gym, the Bitslap HIIT (highintensity interval training) app and the MoveStudio dance and cardio app. (If you decide to sweat with VR, use caution. The Odyssey does not prevent you from walking into walls.) The Odyssey brings users into the next phase of entertainment. Mixed reality allows users to drop into the middle of a documentary about Syria, sail the America’s Cup with a real race team or watch the latest episode of This is Us in a virtual theater. The built-in headset has 360-degree sound, giving virtual voices and ambient noises depth and distance. The Odyssey and the Windows Mixed Reality platform can be installed in compatible devices in minutes. And, with a price below $500, this device is a way for VR newbies to check out the world of augmented reality. Can you see it now?

TIMEPIECES The Oyster case has long been one of the determining factors in Rolex’s reputation for excellence, and it constitutes an important milestone in the history of contemporary watchmaking: Invented by Rolex in 1926, it was the world’s first waterproof case for a wristwatch thanks to its patented system of screwing down the bezel, case back and winding crown against the middle case. In 1927, Rolex put its effectiveness to the test by equipping a young Englishwoman, Mercedes Gleitze, with a watch for her swim across the English Channel. After more than 10 hours in the water, it continued to work perfectly, providing irrefutable proof that the Oyster case was waterproof. Today, thanks to the case’s hermetic construction (solid middle case, screw-down case back and crown, friction-fitted crystal and bezel), all Rolex Oyster watches are guaranteed waterproof to a depth of at least 100 meters (328 feet), increasing to 300 meters (984 feet) for the Submariner divers’ models and up to 3,900 meters (12,795 feet) for the Rolex Deepsea. The Oyster’s middle case (the central section of the case) is stamped and machined out of a solid block of 904L steel, 18-karat gold or 950 platinum. It is extremely robust and forms the backbone to which all the other parts of the case are securely fitted. Some professional models

feature a crown guard on the side; these shoulders are stamped as an integral part of the middle case. The sapphire crystal is mounted on a gasket, and the whole is fitted against the flange of the case and hermetically clamped tight by the bezel or a sealing ring. Oyster case backs are hermetically screwed down against the middle case. All models in the Oyster collection are equipped with the Oyster case and a Twinlock or Triplock winding crown. The Twinlock screwdown winding crown, developed and patented by Rolex, comprises a double system of seals, guaranteeing waterproofness to a depth of 100 meters. The Triplock comprises 10 components made of materials selected for their inherent qualities, including 18-karat gold or 904L steel for the crown and polymers for the gaskets. Once assembled, the system is screwed down against the Oyster case, offering watertight security akin to a submarine’s hatch. All Oyster cases are manufactured in-house by Rolex. After the final control operations, every Oyster watch is immersed in water and subjected to a pressure 10 percent greater than that found at the depth to which it is guaranteed—25 percent more in the case of divers’ watches. Robust and waterproof, this perfectly proportioned and elegant watch case blends form and function.

FACE TIME Orlando Bloom’s watch collection would be admired by even the most serious collectors. These three timepieces are among the highlights.

Bloom’s vintage 1950s Rolex Milgauss 6543 was designed in the atomic age and was Rolex’s first watch made for people working within magnetic fields.

BRITISH ACTOR ORLANDO BLOOM IS MAKING THIS ERA HIS OWN. YOU CAN DEPEND ON HIM FOR A SHOW WORTH WATCHING—OR A WATCH WORTH SHOWING. By Daria Meoli jacket and black tuxedo pants with his Bremont AC1 when he escorted on-again-off-again girlfriend Katy Perry to the 2016 Met Gala. Bloom is a practicing Buddhist and a humanitarian. In 2009 he auctioned off several of his valuable watches to raise funds for UNICEF, a global children’s charity for which he is a goodwill ambassador. Pieces on the block included a 1960s Breitling Navitimer 806 and a 1973 Rolex Explorer II 1655 (nicknamed the “Steve McQueen Rolex,” despite a lack of evidence to prove that the screen legend ever owned this model). Months after the auction, a less altruistic organization took possession of Bloom’s prized collection. During the infamous “Bling Ring” crime spree, a group of teenagers from the Hollywood Hills broke into Bloom’s Los Angeles home and stole his watches. Eventually, police apprehended the teens, and Bloom’s watches were returned. The incident hasn’t diminished the actor’s passion for collecting. Whether he is wearing a Patek Philippe Nautilus while out to lunch with Flynn or an IWC Big Pilot 5002 while taking red carpet selfies on Instagram, Bloom continues to mark time in style. And his day is far from done.

One of the most famous Rolex designs, the Submariner is known as the James Bond watch and is built for adventure. This diver’s watch has the ability to resist water pressure down to 1,000 feet.

Put it down, perhaps, to a sense of timing. At 22, days after graduating from London’s Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Orlando Bloom was cast in Peter Jackson’s epic—and epically successful—Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Canterbury, England, native immediately followed up his role as Legolas by playing Will Turner in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Bloom has described his early career as feeling like a “rocket to the moon.” Now at 41, Bloom spends less time swashbuckling and more time on smaller passion projects and raising his 7-year-old son, Flynn Christopher Bloom. On-screen, Bloom has some of his biggest star turns accessorized with swords and elf ears; off-screen, as befits a master of timing, he’s an enthusiastic luxury watch collector. Bloom has a penchant for vintage Rolexes, and his collection includes an ultra-rare 1950s Rolex Milgauss 6543 with black rotating bezel and a vintage Rolex Submariner 6538 Big Crown, the model worn by Sean Connery as James Bond in Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger. Proving that a man is never fully dressed without a watch, Bloom paired a burgundy Prada smoking

Bloom’s IWC Big Pilot 5002 is impressively large at 46mm and has a simple military design that makes it a standout.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Mother Nature must be blushing. Artist and visionary Michael Aram has made his life’s work immortalizing the outdoors and bringing it inside for continuous enjoyment. Inspired by a trip to India 30 years ago (of which travelers will tell you the colors, textures and aromas of the earth are unrestrained), Aram drew upon his professional training as a painter, sculptor and art historian to begin hand-making original pieces. His line of home goods (objet d’art) have lovingly captured the most breathtaking elements of nature: the botanical leaf, the pomegranate, the ocean reef, the butterfly. Each piece rejoices in the delicate grace and mighty spirit of its original muse. While home decor has been a staple of Aram, he’s been privately creating one-off pieces of jewelry for friends and family. In 2014, Aram publicly released his first jewelry collections to the world. Finely crafted of 18K gold and sterling silver, and further enhanced with pearls, diamonds and colorful gemstones, it’s traditional jewelry with a lovely organic twist. What could be more instinctive than a woman wrapping an orchid around her finger, for example? After all, Mother Nature has been doing it for years. Today, over 200 skilled artisans work alongside Aram at his India workshop, with hundreds more around the world. Whether from his studio in India or New York City, Aram’s attention to detail and creative passion is constant. Michael Aram’s jewelry and home goods collections can be found at Mann’s Jewelers and at mannsjewelers.com.

build a

bracelet stack PRO STYLING TIPS FOR JEWELRY LOVERS The key to creating a beautiful bracelet stack is finding the right balance between variety and cohesion. Mixing bracelets of completely different styles can look chaotic, yet stacking bracelets that are too similar can seem boring. Here are some tips: CHOOSE YOUR METAL Before choosing your bracelets, decide whether you want to stick with one metal color, or whether you want to mix metals for more visual interest. CHOOSE YOUR BRACELETS As a general rule, odd numbers look best, so think about building your stack in a group of three, five or seven bracelets. Stack similar bracelets for a streamlined look, or be adventurous and choose bracelets with different textures or silhouettes. If you are mixing metals, alternate the metal colors in the stack. Your bracelet stack doesn’t have to be built all on the same day, but keep your overall visual objective in mind when you begin.

86

MANN’S

EXPERIMENT Once you have a base stack to work with, the opportunities to alter your look are endless. Make your stack more edgy by replacing one or more of the pieces with a link style bracelet, or one with pyramid studs. Further personalize your stack by mixing in vintage-inspired bracelets with more contemporary ones.

perfect hoops Hoops are never out of style, and because there are so many different hoop earring sizes and shapes, most women own multiple pairs to complement their earring wardrobe. Smaller hoops and huggies pair well with professional wardrobes, while larger diameters, 2” or more, with or without diamonds, are very on-trend and add instant style. Boho-inspired hoops with diamond-accented shaggy fringe are a fun twist on a familiar silhouette, while smaller, close to the lobe hoops can become the foundation of someone with more classic style. Just like building a bracelet stack, start by choosing your metal and stone colors, and don’t forget to mix silhouettes. For shorter fingers, create a stack of three rings, and experiment by adding more rings to longer fingers. Varying the widths of your bands can create a more interesting look, regardless of the total number in the stack. Also, think about telling a story. For example, you might choose rings that feature the birthstones of your children, or consider adding a new band to your stack to commemorate an anniversary or a special occasion.

layer necklaces THE OPTIONS ARE ENDLESS! CHOOSE YOUR METAL When layering necklaces, either stay with one metal color or mix it up with two or more to add visual interest. CHOOSE YOUR LENGTHS The prettiest necklace groupings feature a mix of clearly defined lengths and textures. Choose your shortest necklace first and make sure that the length works well with your neckline. A 14-inch or 16inch choker looks great with a scoop neck top, blouse or T-shirt, while a longer necklace works well with higher necklines.

When choosing your longest chain, pick one with a bit of weight to anchor your look and frame your shorter necklaces. Pendants with long chains and compelling details add interest to the overall composition.

ADD CONTRAST Add a horizontal bar necklace to break up the lines of more vertical necklaces. Consider showcasing a detailed pendant at the nape of the neck, possibly set with diamonds or impactful color. INTRODUCE COLOR Add color to a neutral outfit with multiple strands of faceted beads or colorful gemstones. A combination of beads and gold or silver chains makes for a creative expression of personal style.

90

MANN’S

When adding your second necklace, consider selecting one with a different chain. If your shortest necklace has a delicate chain, choose a longer beaded chain or textured links to pair with it.

MAKE IT PERSONAL Personalize your look by incorporating initials, gemstones, religious symbols, tassels, diamond fringe or meaningful amulets.

If ever you wanted to plan an affair to remember, it’s your wedding. Bronson van Wyck’s tips will help you plan the celebration of a lifetime – and one your guests will never forget. Do sweat the small stuff. Well, just a few small things. While you shouldn’t stress about making your entire wedding perfect, spend time on a few special touches that make your big day really feel like your day. “Sometimes the subtle details are the ones that set the tone and say that a host has thought about things,” van Wyck told One Kings Lane. What those details are depends on your personal taste, but some of van Wyck’s favorites include “an escort card table [that] was an old potting table lined with wildflowers and simple cards that were each hand tied with lavender. The guests’ very first impression of the ceremony on a warm summer day was the subtle, clean scent of lavender in the air,” he told Armarium. And his favorite dinner setup? “On the back lawn of a historic villa in Tuscany. It was so simple, with two long tables, a slew of candles, potted herbs and flowers, and bistro lights overhead. I loved the drama and the intimacy of the seating 400 guests at only two tables.” The touches that truly matter to you will be part of what you remember most years later. Whimsical, personal details. At a party he threw for Coach, van Wyck and team incorporated dinosaurs, the brand’s new favorite animal, throughout the event: Dinosaur topiaries with floral leis greeted guests waiting for drinks at the bar, while colorful dino pins were included in the treats for partygoers to take home. Have fun with your own quirky details that make you and your partner special. continued...

For example, van Wyck planned a wedding for an ultra-bold couple who wanted red everything: “From the flowers to the draped ceiling to luxurious tablecloths and even the guests’ attire, the bride’s favorite color cocooned their guests in every way…. It’s fun to work with a color palette that is so simple yet so dramatic,” van Wyck said. Don’t forget this is your day – and one that’s meant to be a joyous celebration! “When you’re planning a wedding, there’s the sacred part of it, which is the relationship between the two people who are coming together,” van Wyck explained to Business Insider. “But there’s also the aspect of throwing just a knock-down party, and that can be fun.” Create opportunities for guests to enjoy special moments. No doubt you’ve already planned to keep your guests well fed (and well drunk!). But van Wyck recommended taking it a step further. “You also have a responsibility to their emotional well-being—what do they need in addition to a drink in their hand? Think about how you put people together. Create moments where guests flirt and get to know each other,” van Wyck told Barneys. One of his top tips for creating intimacy is “a sparklers moment. It doesn’t seem to get old for me. It’s a fun surprise for guests young to old, and it brings the group together,” he told Armarium. “Two guests might share and hold one together or help each other light them just in the nick of time.” Plus, he added, the glow of a sparkler creates a perfect nighttime photo op. “When your friends and family can walk away from the night with a memory or a new friend,” van Wyck said, “they will treasure that long after the social media post has moved down the feed.”
