A NOTE FROM NANCY MANN, CEO OF MANN’S JEWELERS
As the weather heats up, Rochester steps it up when stepping out. Warmer temps make it easier to come alive out of the gray abyss with bold pops of color. The buying team at Mann’s Jewelers has spent many weeks this year traveling domestically and abroad, carefully assembling an extraordinary selection of jewelry and timepieces, and our showcases are overflowing with fresh designs. Now more than ever, so much of the jewelry being designed is exceptionally creative. There were many times we had difficulty deciding what to bring home and what to leave behind. The end result is an assortment we are really excited to share. The rainbow trend continues to flourish, spreading a colorful glow. Stars, moons and everything celestial twinkle brilliantly with sparkly diamonds. Hoops continue to be an integral part of every jewelry wardrobe, in classic gold or silver, diamond encrusted or with a fringy boho-inspired influence. Could it be the Chanel factor—homage to both Coco and Karl? Ropes of pearls with multiple strands, multiple sizes, classic round or baroque shapes and luxe South Seas are making a big comeback, which we are truly thrilled to see. There is likely nothing more elegant than a woman accessorized with pearls. If a single strand seems too demure, we are happy to help you mix it up a bit, with some of yours and some of ours.

If you have to choose just one seasonal splurge, treat yourself to a statement earring. Think colorful and impactful, sassy and shoulder-dusting or bold and beautiful: the perfect complement to multiple layers of beige, tie-dye and texture, cargo pants and a tee. And nothing is more chic than accessorizing a classic black maillot or a tiny bikini with an undulating line of yellow gold. Paired with a wide-brimmed straw hat and your favorite sunnies, a beautiful lariat casually clasped around your neck or a skinny gold waist chain shows the world that fashion and passion go hand in hand.

Never in a million years would I have guessed I’d be searching my closet for the Fendi bike shorts I stole from my mom in 1995. Crap. Gone, probably donated during one of my closet tantrums. A closet tantrum is defined as: a day when you decide you have too many possessions and give all your stuff away, declaring victory and minimalism until the next morning when you can’t locate your underwear. Somewhere in this city is a fashion-forward teenager hitting the jackpot at the Goodwill store. There is so much great nostalgia in fashion trends this year. Remember when we were all, “Wow the ’90s were so ugly! Those looks will never come back into style.” Well, you fell for it. Just like the Terminator…they always come back. Beach reading as a teen likened itself to the poolside US Weeklys of my adulthood. The Sweet Valley High girls were my idols. The Wakefield twins had it all: the brains, the rolling blond curls, and lots of fashionable adventures. In the series, one of them fell in love with a vampire while the other was bitten by a werewolf, they were kidnapped by a cult and got jobs as nannies with the royal family. Man, what a life. Their California surfer-girl chic is a must for summer style this season. Try a camp tie-dyed sweatshirt and neoprene mini skirt for a movie at the drive-in. Go ahead and reminisce in bright shades of pastels clashing with paint strokes, light-washed jeans and cropped tops, and coordinating sets of bike shorts and boxy blazers. Go all out and plan a pool party with a Saved by the Bell reunion theme! Brightly colored suits—blazers with pants or shorts—in a rainbow of options make a bold statement this spring: reds, blues and pinks. You can wear each piece as separates to

A good reminder this season is to live in the moment but dress from the past. I bought my son, Cash, a tie-dyed Grateful Dead T-shirt (from J.Crew of all places). Curious as to why he hadn’t worn it, I handed it to him and he said, “No way. It’s a shirt with pink and purple dancing teddy bears on it.” I doubled over in laughter. Fashion is more about perspective and memories than we realize. I explained the awesomeness of the band and the “pass the apple” dance moves…I left out the hallucinogens (maybe that’s why the bears never seemed weird). After some explanation, he wore the shirt and added a camo trucker hat on his moppy head of soccer hair. Hey what do you know, even the kid is a throwback to Sutherland High School in 1992.

work or as a matching set with high-heeled neon sandals for a night out in Miami Vice style with a Don Johnson swagger. Don’t be afraid that your husband will make a spectacle of you at Starbucks and try to take your photo to show his friends because he thinks you look like David Byrne. True story, it happened. Stand tall and strong, girl—confidence is the one thing that is always on trend. Feather accents are bewitching. This glamorous trim on dresses, shoes or handbags is the perfect way to be soft yet sultry at a summer wedding. It’s just the right amount of “extra.” It is fun to have those Mad Men moments and be sure to bring the attitude and champagne to match. Please, keep the feathers to one piece of clothing at a time; looking like a chicken on the dance floor is not the look you want to go for. Neo Bohemian is the newest in hippie haute couture. This gypset style mimics traveling the Sahara at sunset, which, now that I think about it, I actually have no idea what that looks like. Anyway, back to my desert fantasy... sunset and neutral hues are layered with crochet dresses and your Sutra earrings, all swaying in the warm breeze. Amulet jewels hang over earthy tones, and tapestry spring coats sit loosely on tanned shoulders. Sand-colored utility pants with a cream tank top and scarf print fabric sandals are perfect for a warm summer night. Yellow is the new black. Ha, it’s just funny to say that…it’s really not. Aspen Gold and Mango Mojito—two shades of yellow—are among the Pantone colors of spring/ summer 2019, but it’s the opposite of ho-hum noir. Neon yellow is my pick for an accent color this summer. But if you’re nervous about the electric jolt of cool, then there is marigold, lemon or butter as well. Try it on your nails, shoes or evening clutch. Play it casual with a neon-colored sweater and high-waisted faux leather leggings and sneaks on a cool spring night.

PIECES FROM ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL, PROGRESSIVE BRANDS IN FASHION ARE RIGHT AT HOME IN ROCHESTER.
craze By Adriana Marotta
MANN’S
Alessandro Michele, Gucci’s creative director, has reinvented the house and taken a wholly modern and futuristic approach to fashion. Under his vision, the brand has redefined luxury for the 21st century, further reinforcing its position as one of the world’s most desirable fashion houses. Michele’s electric yet romantic designs have represented the pinnacle of Italian craftsmanship and attention to detail. Michele told Vogue shortly after his appointment as Gucci’s creative director, “I’m not interested in the future—it doesn’t exist yet—but I’m really interested in the past and the contemporary. My apartment is full of antique pieces, but I put everything together like a modern installation.” Gucci’s transformation has been nothing short of staggering since his reign began. Gucci was founded in 1921 in Florence, Italy, by Guccio Gucci. What started as a small luggage company grew to what is now one of the most well-known fashion houses in the industry, with the help of his son Aldo, and alumni designers including former creative director Tom Ford. Iconic trademarks include the interlocking GG logo, red and green stripes and now innovative jewelry and timepiece designs that bring back the popular bee icon and tiger head. Jewelry from the Le Marché des Merveilles collection is defined by the House’s feline head and the Flora collection is representative of nature. Fine jewelry crafted from 18K gold, colored gemstones including aquamarine and tourmaline and enriched in diamonds, is manufactured by renowned Italian goldsmiths. The Gucci Garden also is located in Florence. The famous gallery attracts thousands of visitors each day from all over the world to see the brand’s iconic designs, purchase one-ofkind pieces and dine at its café, Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura. Mann’s Jewelers CEO, Nancy Mann, had the pleasure of visiting the Gucci Garden accompanied by the Gucci team as she explored the gallery, went behind the scenes to visit the artisans and learned about the inspiration behind the brand’s vision. Mann’s Jewelers is honored to have jewelry and timepieces from this iconic Italian brand at our store and on mannsjewelers.com.

fire A NEW CUTTING TECHNIQUE MADE POSSIBLE BY NANOTECHNOLOGY IS UNLEASHING EVEN MORE BEAUTY FROM NATURAL DIAMONDS. By Adriana Marotta
New to the market, Fire Polish diamonds are the result of a proprietary cutting technique that has been studied and approved by the GIA and the AGS, the two foremost authorities on diamond standards in the world. They are naturally mined diamonds with a high tech twist, first discovered by researchers working on nanotechnology at the California Institute of Technology at Pasadena. Fire Polish uses fire prism technology to plasma etch thousands of tiny nano prisms onto the flat facets of a diamond’s pavilion in addition to the traditional cuts used to facet diamonds. This technology allows the white light to break into thousands of individual flashes of colored light. In fact, Fire Polish diamonds refract more colored light, white light and sparkle than any other diamond on the market. The distinctive difference of Fire Polish can be clearly seen with the naked eye, no microscope or loop necessary. Now, for the first time, diamonds can be cut to fully maximize sparkle, fire and brilliance. Fire Polish is one of the greatest advancements of diamond beauty in the last 100 years. See these breathtaking diamonds for yourself and you’ll discover the Fire Polish difference. Fire Polish diamonds are only available in Rochester at Mann’s Jewelers.

STEPHEN WEBSTER LAUNCHED AN INITIATIVE TO SAVE OUR OCEANS, ONE DRINK AT A TIME. By Adriana Marotta
The London-based contemporary fine jewelry brand Stephen Webster is especially known for its cutting-edge design and traditional craftsmanship, but also its long-term commitment to environmental responsibility. Because they take approximately 200 years to break down, plastic straws are one of the most prolific items washed up on the beaches across the world. In response to 500 million plastic straws used in the United States every single day, Stephen Webster takes a stand against this environmental issue by introducing its newest project: The Last Straw. The motive behind the new initiative is not only to bring awareness to an important issue but also to inspire people to give up the use of plastic straws. Stephen Webster is offering beautifully crafted reusable sterling silver straws, the perfect material known for its anti-bacterial qualities. Each $175 straw will be hand engraved with the owner’s name and serial number followed by the engraved statement: Last Straw. The brand has partnered with Plastic Oceans Foundation and will donate 10 percent of all sales. Commenting on the launch, Stephen Webster, founder of this eponymous jewelry brand, says, “This initiative is our brand taking a stand for social responsibility. It is well known that I personally have a love of all things aquatic and as a consequence, over the years have taken part in several clean ocean and water initiatives. It’s important that no matter how small, we play a part in preserving our oceans.” Mann’s Jewelers is proud to be a participant in the Last Straw initiative to reduce the amount of plastic straws being used. Stephen Webster’s sterling silver straws can now be found at Mann’s Jewelers on Monroe Avenue.

This heirloom-worthy timepiece is the epitome of the brand’s commitment to quality craftsmanship that refuses to be ignored.

ask the doctor Q & A WITH PLASTIC SURGEON DR. ASHLEY AMALFI
There are so many celebs who are clearly dabbling in plastic surgery. What procedures are they electing to have? Celebrities certainly take care of themselves and their appearance, and many of them are no strangers to plastic surgery. Although I am not a surgeon to the celebrities, it is always interesting to evaluate their beauty habits and speculate on the procedures they may have undergone. It is evident that Hollywood is aging gracefully. They take good care of their skin and invest in their appearance, something that we can all emulate from a young age. You don’t have to be a celebrity to take good care of your face from an early age. We see many women using non-invasive facial rejuvenation as prevention. I have many patients in their 20s and 30s who take a similar approach. By starting with treatments such as neurotoxins and fillers, they are preventing the fine lines and wrinkles before they even start. You don’t have to be rich and famous to realize that quick injections a few times a year will prevent those deep worry lines and wrinkles in our forehead from ever forming. Fillers are great for those first few lines and wrinkles that we experience in our 30s and 40s. Sometimes our first wrinkles are only evident on the side of our face we sleep on, but these minor signs of aging can become a focus for patients. I know firsthand what a little bit of filler can do to correct these tiny lines and what a huge impact that can have on how you feel about your appearance. So, just where are the celebrities getting filler and neurotoxin? We see a lot of neurotoxin to the upper face and worry lines between the eyebrows and across the forehead. They can also help to soften crow’s feet around the eyes. In the age of selfies, we clearly see a lot of people getting filler to their lips for that voluptuous pout. But, subtle lip filler can reduce the look of tiny lines and wrinkles around the mouth called the nasolabial folds. Filler is often more understated in places like the tear troughs, the area that causes dark circles at the junction of the under eye area and upper cheek. Other common locations for fillers include the cheeks and cheekbones, places where we quickly lose youthful volume as we age. We know the celebs are spending beaucoup bucks on skincare. We are busy people. Can you simplify skin care for us? Skin care is another critical element to that celebrity glow. Everyone’s regimen should include five things: UV protection, a cleanser, an antioxidant, a moisturizer and, when done having children, vitamin A. 1) UV protection is the most critical element of skin care. We should be protecting our skin from UV exposure year-round, whether we are poolside at
Midtown or just running into Wegmans on a cloudy day. I tell patients to use a moisturizer that already has SPF in it. This ensures that they are getting full protection from even minor exposure. We now carry a medical grade skin care line in our office that offers UV protection that simultaneously treats the skin and provides everyday coverage to match any skin tone. 2) We live busy lives, but washing your face with a quality cleanser twice a day is not negotiable. Cleansing removes the dirt and grime from the day, cleaning our pores and preventing breakouts. Cleansers may include treatment for acne prone skin and can be more hydrating or drying, depending on skin type. 3) Antioxidants like vitamin C are essential to keep our skin healthy. They reduce inflammation and can help with a smoother more even skin tone and may even reduce the appearance of aging by protecting further from UV exposure. 4) Hydration is as important to our skin as it is to our entire bodies. A moisturizer nourishes the skin, leaves it looking plumper and visibly reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Hydration is essential for any of your facial products to do their job and provide you with a maximum benefit. 5) So you’ve got the basic components, but what can you do to combat wrinkles? Retinoic acid, or vitamin A, is the only clinically proven topical treatment to prevent wrinkles. Yes, it really is that simple. For women who are beyond their childbearing years (as vitamin A is harmful during pregnancy), using Retinol can help with cellular turnover, create a clean glow to the skin and prevent wrinkles from even forming. As soon as I was done having my children, I added this to my skin care regimen and have been so excited to see immediate results! Keeping up with this can be costly. Where can I save money and where should I invest? Please come in for a cosmetic consultation and we can discuss everything from your skin care to invasive and non-invasive procedures to achieve your goal. Many of the products and lesser invasive procedures have a low pricetag and are more cost effective than you may think. Please remember that neurotoxins and fillers are medical procedures that should be performed by highly trained medical practitioners. It took me 14 years to become a board-certified plastic surgeon, not just a weekend course. Do your homework and always choose a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist for these types of procedures. If you are unsure, check out the “Find a Surgeon” tab through the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website (find.plasticsurgery.org) to see if your surgeon is a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.

What better way to show Mom love than through wearable art? Italian designer Ippolita Rostagno creates her jewelry with art and sculpture in mind, and it shows in each and every handmade piece. Ippolita, who studied sculpture and dance in Florence, uses precious metals like gold, sterling silver and rose gold and expertly cut, hand-faceted gemstones to create one-of-a-kind pieces, like the stackable bangles and long, layered necklaces for which she is known. The result? Feminine and effortless jewelry, perfect for Mom to wear on special occasions or every single day.

MIKIMOTO If it’s a strand of pearls Mom is hoping for, Mikimoto is the obvious choice. The namesake behind the brand is Kokichi Mikimoto, who revolutionized the pearl industry when he cultured the first pearl and patented the process in the early 1900s. And now, more than a century later, Mikimoto is still refashioning how women wear pearl necklaces by introducing versatile new designs, innovative clasps and unique styles, from multi-layered strands to lariats laced with diamonds. The collections, which also include earrings, bracelets, brooches and rings, are timeless yet contemporary, classic yet cutting-edge—but universally coveted and stunning.

ART
Considered a trailblazer who ushered in a movement of storytelling in the genre of fashion photography, Norman Parkinson worked outside the box. He took female models away from the static poses and outside well-controlled studios common in pre-war photography and into the real world. His shoots often took place in exotic, glamorous locations where his subjects interacted with the environment. In a career that spanned from 1931 until his death in 1990—while shooting on location in Singapore—Parkinson’s work reflected our evolving society.

NEITHER A TRAVEL CLICHÉ NOR A TOURIST HOT SPOT, SCENIC OMAN MAY ACTUALLY OFFER THE TRUEST MIDDLE EAST EXPERIENCE. By Elise K. Guarna

MANN’S
Tucked around the coastal elbow of the Arabian Peninsula under a bright and cloudless sky lies a land of stunning natural beauty with a rich and ancient culture. The sultanate of Oman managed for a long time to elude the eye of the tourist masses—British actress-model Naomi Campbell calls it one of her secret escapes. From rolling desert sands to breathtaking mountain vistas, from grand Islamic architecture to pristine beaches, from world-class luxury resorts to hidden valleys bursting with palm trees, Oman has something magical in store behind every corner. Does that surprise you? Oman’s neighborhood—it borders Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates—is one you’ve heard about lately, but not necessarily for beachy serenity. Don’t fret; known as “the Switzerland of the Middle East,” Oman is so quiet and peaceful it was voted the fourthsafest country in the world for visitors by the World Economic Forum in 2017. In fact, I have rarely felt as safe anywhere in the world as I did in Oman, where the parks of any city are full of picnicking families late into the night and “Adi, ma mushkila” (“Don’t worry, no problem”) is the response to any request for help. You’ll read that Oman is sparsely populated, but take that with a grain of sand. Most of its nearly 4.5 million residents are clustered in the north, while the land to the south is sparse indeed—it’s desert. Oman is actually smaller

in area than the state of New Mexico, with more than double its population. Long the crown jewel of Oman’s capital city, Muscat, the Al Bustan Palace is the place to begin an indulgent journey through this singular Persian Gulf nation. Steeped in modern Omani history, the five-star hotel stands as the embodiment of Oman’s remarkable marriage of natural beauty, tradition and modern luxury. Now a Ritz-Carlton property, this unique hotel is a former palace and a favorite of Oman’s Sultan Qaboos, who has led modernization efforts during his 48-year rule. One certainly feels like royalty upon walking into the famous Bustan, to be greeted by the lobby’s iconic soaring ceilings and the intoxicating aroma of frankincense, native to the southern Dhofar region and the quintessential fragrance of Oman. Just outside the property, the unassuming beauty of Muscat awaits. Stroll along the Muttrah Corniche, a coastal road, at sunset and sample Omani cuisine at the celebrated Bait Al Luban restaurant, where your meal starts with complimentary frankincense water, said to heal all manner of ills. Mingle with tourists and Omanis alike as you wander the souq, or traditional market, surveying wares ranging from the kitschy to the strikingly beautiful. Stray off the main path to find famed Omani silver work and gold jewelry, or to admire the selection of khanjars, traditional Omani daggers. While Oman is widely known for its tolerance toward guests, Omanis view respect as a two-way street. Tourists of any religion or nationality will be warmly welcomed and treated with the genuine kindness and hospitality so central to the Omani identity. In return, locals ask visitors to respect their traditions by dressing more conservatively when outside hotels and resorts. For both men and women, that means covering shoulders, covering legs down to mid-calf and avoiding plunging necklines. Nowhere in Muscat is this more important than at the breathtakingly

elegant Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the only place in Oman where women will be asked to cover their hair. Incorporating design elements from great Islamic civilizations throughout history, the mosque boasts intricate mosaic work, an Iranian carpet hand-woven by six hundred craftswomen over four years and a 46-foot-tall chandelier of Swarovski crystal, which melds seamlessly with majestic white marble exteriors and fragrant gardens to create a final effect that is as effortless and tranquil as it is awe-inspiring. Taxis are widely available within Muscat and from all major points of interest, but they are generally not metered and can be quite expensive for tourists. Consider renting a car at the airport for more flexible transportation within the city and to explore the natural playground waiting within just a few hours’ travel from Muscat. The diversity and sheer beauty of the Omani countryside never ceased to amaze me. In just one weekend we could swim in the caves of Wadi Shab, watch the sun set from the top of a sand dune and stop for a lunch of fresh fish in the quiet seaside city of Sur, where turquoise waters wash up on beaches dotted with fishing boats and lined with white-washed houses, and where women wearing face-covering niqabs rolled down their car windows to wave at us as we drove through the narrow streets. Wherever I wandered I was greeted by smiling faces—often with a proffered bowl of dates. Drive down the coast and hike through one of Oman’s famous wadis (which loosely translates to “valley” but is often mistranslated as “oasis”). Spend a night in the Sharqiya Sands desert, and wake up with the sun for some dune bashing (off-road vehicle activity) or a leisurely camel ride. Continue to Jabal Akhdar (Arabic for “The Green Mountain”), with its sweeping canyon views, cooler climate and the magnificent Anantara resort. Perched atop one of Oman’s tallest mountains, the Anantara Al Jabal Al

Akhdar is the secluded mountain Eden you never knew you needed. If you ever tire of sipping champagne in your private cliffside infinity pool, you can join an Omani guide to learn about the culture of the nearby villages, where ancient irrigation systems nourish the mountain’s renowned pomegranate trees, or sneak away to the lookout where Princess Diana once surveyed the Hajar Mountains. It’s perfect for a sunrise yoga session or an evening of stargazing in an unpolluted sky. For those craving yet another secluded paradise, the Six Senses Zighy Bay resort in the northern region of the Musandam Peninsula is one for the bucket list. Included on Condé Nast World Traveler’s 2019 Gold List, Zighy Bay describes itself as a reimagined fishing village—that’s if a fishing village were made up of private beachfront villas. Like anything worth having, getting to Zighy Bay requires a bit of work. But trust me, it is well worth the effort. Tucked into a tiny inlet between the mountains and the sea in Oman’s northwest corner, the resort is most easily accessible from Dubai, where guests are picked up at the airport and taken by 4x4 on a scenic journey culminating in a drive through a dramatic mountain pass. To kick off this unique experience the right way, skip the last leg of the drive and opt to paraglide into the resort. Once you’ve arrived, kick back and indulge. Charter a private boat and be whisked through the Omani fjords. Catch a fish, and it will be masterfully prepared for you at any of the resort’s restaurants. Spend the morning crafting a personalized wellness plan or simply being pampered in the world-class Six Senses Spa. Watch the sunset from the clifftop Sense on the Edge Restaurant before diving into one of the exquisite seven-course chef’s menus, or have a meal prepared for you in-villa. Here, as with anywhere else in Oman, the possibilities are endless.

TIRED OF THAI, MEXICAN AND ITALIAN? TRY THE HEALTHY, TASTY FOOD OF ISRAEL. By Donna Rolando
cumin, paprika and cayenne, shakshuka is a hearty wake-up call for breakfast or brunch, but don’t be surprised to see it at the dinner table—it’s that versatile. There’s no right or wrong way to serve shakshuka, and plenty of recipes to prove it. Get creative and sprinkle in some feta cheese. Or let a seasonal veggie fare like eggplant introduce fresh variety to the egg core. If you’re looking for a dish that’s light yet filling at the same time, don’t pass up the chance to taste sabich, a hearty sandwich that can serve as lunch. Loaded atop a pita, there’s fried eggplant and hard-boiled eggs, along with Israeli salad, hummus and tahini. This popular dish is meatless but you won’t miss it as the sauce called amba wakes up your senses with a blend of pickled mangoes, turmeric and fenugreek. A familiar feature at falafel stands, the Israeli salad rounds out the recipe with a blend of tomato, cucumber and other diced veggies. For pasta like nothing you’ll find in an Italian restaurant but with winning qualities all its own, there’s Israeli couscous, also called ptitim. Devour this toasted, pearl-shaped pasta on its own with zuc-
chini, tomatoes and peppers. Or enjoy it as an accompaniment to a main dish such as grilled tilapia as the couscous inspires the chef ’s creativity. But what’s an Israeli meal without the Holy Land’s traditional dessert? Halvah, the sweet, tahini-based candy, gets its name from halwa, the Arabic word for sweet confection. It’s eaten in different variations across the globe but the Israeli version is made with sugar syrup, a sesame base and optional yummy accoutrements like seeds or nuts. It comes in slabs or in packaging, in flavors like chocolate or vanilla or a marble of both, and can be eaten as a dessert or as a companion to an Israeli breakfast. Halvah looks like fudge but is more crumbly in texture, but there really is no way to describe its unique taste. One should just try for himself. No matter how you indulge your curiosity about the wonderful world of Israeli cuisine, you’ll have no pangs of guilt. Remember that fresh and healthy ingredients are at the heart of this culinary style as you discover centuries-old taste sensations closer to home than ever.
Clockwise, from top left: Shakshuka, or “tomato eggs,” is a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner when paired with a fresh salad or bread for dipping; you won’t miss the meat on this ultimate vegetarian sandwich, the sabich, hugely popular in the metropolitan Tel Aviv area; couscous is a versatile, quick-cooking and delicious pasta; halvah is the perfectly sweet ending to your Middle Eastern meal.

They say everything old is new again, but here’s that truism on steroids. The “new” culinary revolution under way in the U.S. actually comes from traditions as old as time: Israeli fare with its winning combination of healthy ingredients and pizzazz. Look for it in hot spots like New York and L.A.—or in a neighborhood near you—as celebrated chefs embrace the trend and reap a bounty of awards. And if you know only hummus dip and falafel, it’s time to expand your culinary horizons by becoming familiar with a few dishes that many, many generations have enjoyed. Don’t let the name shakshuka fool you. Also spelled shakshouka, it may sound like something complicated, but this savory dish of poached eggs nesting in a spiced tomato stew is a one-skillet wonder that cooks up in a snap. This traditional Israeli meal with North African roots goes from stovetop to oven to table in just 40 minutes. (And, yes, it’s often served right in the skillet, taking simplicity to the max.) Soak up all that hearty goodness with challah or pitas, and you’re dining on shakshuka like a pro. With a zesty array of spices such as

WINE
rosé has its day Don’t blush—there’s no need to be embarrassed. Nowadays, it’s perfectly OK to like rosé. More than that, it’s cool. It puts you on the cusp of a cultural wave that has swept up wine lovers from coast to coast. Call it a rosergence. Jay-Z has rapped about it. Drew Barrymore has reveled in it, releasing her own label of pinot noir rosé. Although pink wine still represents a mere 1.5 percent of the total U.S. table wine market—a proverbial drop in the industry bucket—demand for it is swelling. From mid-2016 to mid-2017, domestic consumption of rosé increased 53 percent by volume, surging to $258 million in sales, according to a report last year by Forbes. Over that same period, sparkling rosé also enjoyed a bump, its sales jumping by nearly 20 percent. It all adds up to a serious turnabout in reputation for a wine once snickered at by sophisticates. Starting in the 1970s, and for the good part of a generation, rosé was widely seen as the sweet pink drink of fru-fru cocktail parties, a déclassé concoction for less-than-nuanced palates, much of it sold in jugs by the likes of Gallo and Sutter Home. White zinfandel was the variety by which many people then came to know rosé, and it was often said that the wine’s very existence owed to an error. According to a broadly circulated story, it was born in 1975 when Sutter Home winemaker Bob Trinchero botched a production, giving rise to a high-in-sugar wine with the saccharine character of a Hallmark card. To Trinchero’s surprise, consumers loved it. For better or worse, a phenomenon was born. This, of course, was another era; the American market was just catching on to wine. “In that sense, those sweet rosés were great for the industry,” says Niki Wente, a fifth-generation vintner at venerable Wente Vineyards in Livermore, California. “They got a lot of people drinking and enjoying wine. And the more people learned, the more excited they became about the possibilities.” Wente is one of a growing number of young vintners who are unabashed in their embrace of rosé. Just last year, she expressed that fondness through the first release of Niki’s Pinot Noir Rosé, a crisp but complex wine that bears no resemblance to the cloying blushes of decades past. Dancing lightly on the palate, with notes of cantaloupe and orange zest, this rosé has a closer kinship to the traditionally bone-dry rosés of France, one of several countries where pink wine comes with a rich pedigree. Wide-ranging in its provenance, with deep roots in Spain, Portugal, Germany and Italy, among other wine-producing powers, rosé is also made in myriad styles, from such varietals as pinot noir, grenache and gamay, to name just a few. It appears in shades that span the pink-hued spectrum, from the reddest raspberry to the palest salmon. But no matter its iteration, rosé, at its best, is bright, refreshing and a delicious food wine fit for all occasions. Hence the growing popularity of a wine-world catchphrase. Say it with us: Rosé all day!

It could be a wedding gathering at the famous resort Auberge du Soleil in California’s scenic Napa Valley, as featured in Jessica Kerwin Jenkins’ The Art of Entertaining (Rizzoli New York). Or it could be another celebration somewhere far from the vineyards, but where the golden light of just-before-dusk equally illumines the guests’ cheerfully colorful attire and the sparkling Dom Pérignon equally complements the succulent treats from the sea. Here the culinary preparations are by renowned chef Robert Curry; at your event they could be your own or the work of another artist in the kitchen. What matters is the vibe of effortless delight and the way conversation seems to have an extra opportunity to sparkle. What matters is the moment—and the mood—and the memories you’ll make.

PORSCHE ELECTRIFIES THE GREEN VEHICLE MARKET WITH ITS FIRST ELECTRIC SPORTS SEDAN. By Darius Amos
Careful what you wish for—right, Elon Musk? The Tesla chief took the auto world by storm when he rolled out his line of luxury electric cars, but little did he know his call for the globe’s other leading automakers to manufacture competitive “green” vehicles would be met head-on by Porsche. The German company, with a nearly 90-year history of producing high-end sports cars, has more than stepped up to Musk’s challenge. It is launching a new high-performance sports sedan, the Taycan (pronounced TIE-con), that will stand toe-to-toe with Tesla’s iconic Model S. The Taycan—a Eurasian word that translates loosely to “lively young horse”—is Porsche’s first all-electric vehicle. With a starting price in the $90,000-to-$100,000 range, it aims to become the leader in a market that’s been ruled by Tesla. So what makes this colt run? For starters, it boasts two electric motors that generate a whopping 600 horsepower, which Porsche says muscles 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds. Not bad considering Porsche’s legendary 911 Turbo S does that sprint in roughly 2.5 seconds. Early track results show that the
Taycan has an electric range of about 310 miles. The car’s power source is an 800-volt supercharger battery—plug in the car for just 15 minutes and it will have enough juice to travel 248 miles, or New York to Boston, without stopping. The Porsche power on the Taycan is tamed by all-wheel drive traction, though a rear-wheel drive version is an anticipated option for the future. Inside the cabin, you’ll find all the luxurious amenities typically associated with the Porsche name. The driver’s position resembles a 911, with plenty of gadgets and gizmos within reach. Two touchscreens (one a 10.1-inch display) provide controls for everything from the premium infotainment system to seat adjustments. If you’re hauling family, friends or co-workers, they’ll ride in comfort—there’s ample room for them plus space for luggage in the front and back. An old adage suggests that sometimes less is more. Without an engine, the Taycan offers fewer mechanical components for a driver to interact (play) with. No worries. Welcome to the new generation of electric sports cars.

The Porsche Taycan will be the luxury sports car manufacturer’s first electric car when it hits the U.S. later this year. Engineers say the sports sedan can travel about 310 miles on a fully charged battery—a range that eclipses the industry leader, Tesla’s iconic Model S.
