community
we used to be “just a store.”
NOT ANYMORE. Being a place where you can buy clothes was just the beginning. For more than 60 years, we’ve been evolving into a community “heart” where we offer much more than that.
I
n 1958, when Ed and Norma Mitchell opened our original store, a store was mostly... just a store. But every day since, particularly over the past 20 years, that’s just a part of what we are and what we aspire to be to our communities. On an obvious note, today we also are an online business. But more meaningful to us are the ways our business, both in-store and online, serves our communities in unique, long-term and purposeful ways. Here are just a few...
HUB FOR LOCAL PHILANTHROPY Our local communities mean everything to us, and we are passionate about helping those who need it most. We take great joy in offering our large retail spaces to be used as venues for community and fundraising events. Our doors are open to help those in need, be it for Near & Far Aid, Pink Aid, Shatterproof, Staples Sports teams or countless other events we host. Our commitment to teaching the upcoming generation about giving back is both our duty and a privilege.

STEWARD OF FASHION EDUCATION
RENOWNED DIAMOND & JEWELRY PROGRAM
Always offering a world-class range of classic and trend-forward designer fashions, our staff receives constant education from fashion professionals and our designer vendors in how to wear the latest styles. Our Style Advisors are here to educate you on everything from hem lengths to bow tie and scarf tying. We also post many informative “how tos” online via our blog and style editor.
Since introducing fine jewelry to our stores more than 20 years ago, we’ve cultivated one of the most esteemed diamond and gemstone businesses in the industry. All of our Jewelry Advisors are educated or certified by the Gemological Institute of America. With the collective buying power of our stores and a far-ranging international diamond circuit, we are able to offer quality, competitive pricing and value we are proud to stand behind.
SOCIAL GATHERING CENTER What to do on a Saturday afternoon or a weekday with time to kill? Come in for some casual browsing and chatting. More often than not, you will run into friends, get some ideas and enjoy a pleasant break from your day. We love to see you, no obligation to buy!
MEETING PLACE FOR INTERNATIONAL DESIGNERS
CURATOR OF GLOBAL RUNWAYS Paris, Milan, London and New York Fashion Week. Several times a year, our buyers are at the runways and at market, personally selecting product with our customers and communities in mind. Each of our eight stores has a custom edit, hand-picked for the distinct desires and lifestyle of our customers.
not anymore.indd 7
Our relationships with some of the world’s most renowned designers are often decades deep and unique to our family business and the way our buyers work. Some of the countless designers that have come to our stores and with whom we enjoy long-term friendships include Brunello Cucinelli, Gildo Zegna, Temple St. Claire, Michael Kors, Manolo Blahnik and Sylva Yepremian, to name a few.
COFFEE SHOP And last but not least…since 1958 we’ve been a gathering place where there’s been a pot of coffee brewing (now latte and cappuccino, too)! Come in and join us for a cup. Enjoy bagels on Saturdays, pretzels, M&Ms and our kiddie corner, too!

MITCHELLS AT 60!
CELEBRATING THE ITALIAN WAY Brunello Cucinelli and Mitchells families celebrate a 60th-anniversary milestone.
STYLE AMBASSADORS Brunello Cucinelli's president Massimo Caronna and CEO Riccardo Stefanelli
To celebrate their decades-long partnership and Mitchells’ 60th anniversary, the Cucinelli and Mitchell families gathered together for a very special dinner in June. Bringing the essence of Solomeo to Westport, the evening began with a presentation of the Brunello Cucinelli fall 2019 collection, followed by an Umbrian-inspired dinner prepared by celebrity chef and Food Network star Christian Petroni. Throughout the cocktail hour, the charcuterie boards came to life as hand-sliced prosciutto and Parmigiano-Reggiano made their way to the tables. Petroni’s team from Fortina restaurants partnered with the catering extraordinaires at Marcia Selden Catering to create the interactive meal. Each course featured Petroni’s spin on the classics, with the finishing touches of vegetables, meats and fish roasted to perfection in Fortina’s traveling wood-fired pizza oven. From the authentic Italian farm tables to the freshly potted plants and herbs, not a detail was spared on the elegant décor, which transported everyone to Italy for a few hours. CEO Riccardo Stefanelli, President Massimo Caronna and many other Brunello Cucinelli executives traveled from Italy for this special milestone and Brunello himself delivered his good wishes via a virtual personal message. ■

E V E N T S NEAR & FAR
CHANGE A LIFE, HAVE A BALL Mitchells and Near & Far Aid event targets poverty and changes lives.
The theme of this year’s Near & Far Aid Gala was Modern Ball, a bold and bright expression of fashion-forward fun. Mitchells presented a dynamic fashion show full of brilliant colors and patterns that signaled the coming of spring, all set to a live DJ music mix. Marcia Selden Catering served up fun at every turn with electrifying cocktails, innovative hors d’oeuvres and late-night bites. Guests danced the night away during the after party, complete with dice games. Fundraising was the focus of the evening as guests and donors showed their support through direct contributions and bidding on unique and exclusive items in the silent, live and wine auctions. Near & Far Aid aims to break the cycle of poverty in our area by granting more than $1 million annually to programs and agencies that serve the community’s day-to-day needs. ■ nearandfaraid.org

SHATTERPROOF AT RICHARDS
WE WERE SO HONORED
Bob and Bill Mitchell accept the 2019 Brian Mendell Award from Shatterproof Founder and CEO Gary Mendell.
The Mitchell family receives the 2019 Brian Mendell Award At the Third Annual Shatterproof Benefit held at Richards this April, the Mitchell family was honored with the 2019 Brian Mendell Award. Created in memory of Shatterproof founder Gary Mendell’s son, Brian, who passed away as a result of addiction in 2011, the award is given to an individual or individuals who are committed to ending the stigma of addiction in their community. The Mitchell family—with a long lineage of recovery—is so very proud of its members in recovery and the work Shatterproof has done to help reverse our nation’s addiction crisis. This year’s benefit featured delicious food and drinks, a silent auction and moving remarks by Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, emcee Dave Price, members of the Mitchell family and Gary Mendell. The Mitchells are grateful for their partnership with Shatterproof and to the more than 250 generous attendees who raised close to $870,000 at the event. In all, Shatterproof has raised a total of $2.1 million for its mission to end the devastation of addiction. Together we continue to celebrate recovery and take addiction out of the shadows and into the light. ■ shatterproof.org

Filling in the Blanks’ Fifth Annual Spring Luncheon & Fashion Show put a fresh spin on the season’s trends. Through commentary by Mitchells’ women’s buyer, Aisha Bennett, guests learned how to wear curated items from day to night and mix them with pieces they already own. Guests viewed and shopped everything from casual wear to runway styles. Proceeds were donated to Filling in the Blanks, a Norwalk, Connecticut-based nonprofit with the mission of ending hunger in our area by providing needy children with meals on the weekends. ■ fillingintheblanks.org
YWCA
EMPOWERING WOMEN A stand against domestic violence
Mitchells and Richards partnered with the Italian Trade Agency for a season-long celebration of Italian artisan designers…complete with an abundant display of Italian bites and wines. ■
In March, YWCA committee members modeled fresh spring looks in a Richards fashion show that was commentated on by style advisors Josephine Campanella-Furlin and Kathy Paulus. Richards proudly donated a percentage of sales from the luncheon to the YWCA, whose important efforts empower the community through education programs, seminars, counseling, support groups and free domestic abuse services, which they have been providing for over 35 years. ■ ywcagreenwich.org
MORE IN-STORE MILESTONES We honored Mitchell Stores chairman and master hugger, Jack Mitchell, with an in-store celebration on his 80th birthday.
CONTEMPORARY EVENT We were excited to celebrate spring with an event featuring A-list
contemporary and denim designers, fun beats, giveaways, sips and bites and an expanded selection of styles for three days only. This year’s lineup included coveted contemporary brands like Vince, Nili Lotan, SPRWMN and more. JEWELRY DINNER This May, three fabulous jewelry designers, Sylva & Cie, Mariani and
Hoorsenbuhs, transformed our women’s shoe and bag department into their own themed spaces for an exclusive night of shopping and dining. Chef Luke Venner of Elm Restaurant in New Canaan prepared the small plate tasting dinner. FASHION SPEAKS OUT This year Mitchells partnered with friends at A.K. Rikk’s in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as well as four other specialty retail stores around the nation, to speak out to end the silence around mental illness. Speaks Out is a social movement that’s changing the culture of mental health as depression and anxiety affect 560 million people worldwide. For even more info, visit fashionspeaksout.com.

WEDDINGS & GALAS
LOCAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Do you have additional homes you travel to at certain times of the year? Do you have a career that requires a certain wardrobe, be it dressy and suited or casual? Yearly business or charity events you regularly attend? If you share this information with your Style Advisor, they will help prepare for life’s adventures and events with inimitable style, offering selections at many price points.
Have a wedding in the family coming up? A bar mitzvah? Going to a black-tie event or gala? Let us know and we will help you put together a sensational outfit, top to toe. We offer stunning tuxedos and gowns, both off-the-rack or custom, from the world’s top fashion houses. Easy access to our stores makes fittings and alterations a breeze. We are here when you need us!
New to town? Don’t know where to go for lunch? Even if you aren’t, sometimes you need suggestions for a restaurant, doctor, electrician or florist. As a family business that has been entrenched in the community for decades, we enjoy offering this informal “concierge service.” Just ask us and we will give you our top picks. And if the Style Advisor or person you ask doesn’t have an answer, we’ll get an answer! It’s our pleasure.

BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES
SPECIAL OCCASIONS
FASHION EMERGENCIES
Let us know your anniversary and the birthdays of your spouse and other key family members. We are happy to send reminders and inspired gift suggestions that fit your budget (and are sure to keep you out of the doghouse!).
Is your child graduating from college? Are you headed to your high school reunion? Opening night at the ballet? We have dressed our customers for every possible occasion. We will make sure your outfit hits all the right notes and that you are as classic or edgy as you want to be and always on trend.
We all have them every now and then. The dress you misplaced. A last-minute invitation you weren’t prepared for. If you are having a fashion emergency, we have a 24-hour hotline. Call us and we will arrange to have someone meet you off hours.
“The key to really helping my customers is being a good listener. I was taught that 90% of the time I should be listening and 10% of the time talking. It flows naturally. My clients let me know what they want and need as it suits them. I also look at body language. I can pick up on cues I need to be aware of. I can tell when a client is truly satisfied and feeling great.” —MARILYN WALLACH, STYLE ADVISOR, MITCHELLS WESTPORT

for the adventurous nature lover...
BUBBLE HOTELS Discover the next generation of glamping. Luxury and nature have never been so spectacularly intertwined as at bubble hotels... now in some of the most remote and picturesque places on the planet.
E
ver wonder what it would be like to watch the Northern Lights from the comfort of a warm and cozy bed? Or to wake up in the middle of a scenic desert valley before sandstone mountains? Or in an enchanted forest right out of a storybook? Or peering over the edge of a canyon? When it comes to experiencing the great outdoors, bubble hotels are the newest in bespoke nature travel, popping up (literally) all over the world. Transparent bubble rooms offer an opportunity to see and hear the nature you are living in, with views of the sky and surrounding landscape without walls and ceilings getting in the way. For those that like some separation between their sleeping quarters and the elements, most bubble rooms offer heat, air conditioning, floors; many even have indoor
bathrooms and wifi. Bubble rooms vary greatly and regionally. At Finn Lough Resort in the Irish forest, for example, you can sleep in a four-poster bed with heated floors and Ferrari linens. At exotic Bois ChĂŠri in Mauritius, you can stay in a double bubble, with a living room and space for additional guests. Campera Hotel Burbuja in Mexico stocks the mini bar with local red and white wine produced from the vineyards surrounding the bubbles. Many bubbles have hot tub decks or kitchenettes complete with hot chocolate or even Nespresso machines. For a private and secluded experience, many bubble hoteliers can arrange custom meals prepared al fresco, and curated opportunities to further experience the hiking, wildlife, vineyards and nature of their regions.

In June 2019, David Webb’s Zebra Bracelet was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for its permanent collection.
the iconic favorite of collectors & celebrities
DAVID WEBB From Elizabeth Taylor and Jackie Kennedy to Amy Adams and Reese Witherspoon, the world’s most glamorous women have been wearing David Webb for more than 70 years.
T
he quintessential American jeweler of distinctly original modern jewelry, David Webb is best known for carved and enameled animal bracelets, dramatic gold necklaces, colorful sautoirs, Maltese cross brooches, dynamic use of pearls and diamonds and exquisite rock crystal pieces. All David Webb jewelry is made in New York, as it has been since 1948. David Webb was born in “dogwood country” Asheville, NC with a thirst for big-city life. He
began honing his creativity as an apprentice for an uncle in jewelry manufacturing. Arriving in New York City in 1948 at the age of just 23, he opened shop. Manhattan was fast and fun: Daytime visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, dinner parties with clients. By the age of 25, his jewelry appeared on the cover of Vogue, and in 1962 he became First Lady Jackie Kennedy’s choice to make the official Gifts of State. David became quickly known for his

“Animal Kingdom” collection. His first animal bracelet was created in 1957, and by 1963 the company had a bestiary all its own. Frogs, horses, zebras, monkeys, snakes, elephants and all the “big cats” are part of his famed repertoire. By the end of the 1960s, women of society all wore David Webb animal bracelets. Elizabeth Taylor, a devoted client, even wore her own diamond-studded lion and pearl David Webb jewelry in her films. Known as the “Houdini of gold,” David’s ambition was to make the new look old. To do so, he analyzed the composition of gold and came up with alloys that had the patina of ancient gold; he went on weekly trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and studied gold objects from the Incas, Turkey and Syria, from Egyptian artifacts unearthed in the tombs of Tutankhamun, and refashioned them in his own hand. David Webb, the modernist, tended toward more geometric and architectural forms over figurative, which shows up in many ways: cascading Celtic forms and Mayan stepped pyramids decorate pendants; tightly wound curls on chunky necklace links; inverted C-scrolls dominating brooches. David Webb jewelry is not gold for the timid, but for the bold. If there is one message from his collections, it’s that women are powerful in their taste and actions. David Webb understood how something ancient could also be so refreshingly modern. Many changes occurred in 1975 at David Webb. The company was producing one winning collection after the next: rock crystal bracelets with diamonds in yellow gold, multi-strand pearl necklaces with carved lapis pendants, totem pieces of brightly colored stones, jewelry with bold geometric motifs in hand-painted enamel and gold. By this time, David Webb had been featured on the covers of such fashion magazines as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Town & Country. But in December that year, David Webb tragically died of pancreatic cancer
David Webb in his New York City salon
at the young age of 50, a little more than a quarter-century after founding his company. Nina Silberstein took the reins as the president of the company and in 2009, the third and present ownership of the company passed to Mark Emanuel and Robert Sadian. Since that time, the owners have diligently worked with the archive of nearly
40,000 drawings and designs, faithfully restoring David Webb’s original designs and presenting them for today’s clientele. As distinctive pieces continue to be created directly from the David Webb archive, today David Webb can be seen in museum collections around the world and on many of the world’s boldest and most memorable women.

WHEN IN ROME...
ALDA FENDI’S NEW CULTURAL HUB
S
teps from the River Tiber, amidst the earliest settlements of ancient Rome, a very contemporary vision has come to life. Housed in a restored 19th-century palace, Palazzo Rhinoceros Esperimenti, a combination art gallery, performance space and apartment building, is the newest cultural hot spot in Rome. The project, created by Fondazione Alda Fendi - Esperimenti, is the brainchild
of Alda Fendi, the youngest of five daughters that turned their family brand into a global powerhouse. Fendi’s vision was to break down the traditional barriers between art, theater, literature, music, performance and living. “It’s a neighborhood under one roof,” says Fendi. “It’s a building in constant motion, and anyone can come here and become part of the experiment.” The 24 residences, available for rent,
were designed and furnished by awardwinning French architect Jean Nouvel. On the fifth and sixth floors, next to gallery and performance spaces, is Caviar Kaspia Roma, an outpost of the Paris-based restaurant that serves Russian-Italian fusion cuisine and features 360-degree views of the city. “Our space is not like other art spaces in Rome: We want to do something counterculture in our palazzo, to give freedom to art and to take inspiration from the culture of the street,” Alda Fendi told Forbes. Whether or not you stay in the palazzo, a visit to see the project’s centerpiece, a lifesize resin rhinoceros designed by Raffaele Curi, lit magnificently in front of the 5th century Arch of Janus, is an absolute must. The symbol of the rhinoceros harkens back to ancient Rome and the concepts of strength and unconventionality.

ince the early 2000s, the fashion film genre has been increasingly on fire. From high-budget advertising films from the world’s top fashion houses to fashion documentaries and feature films themselves, fashion films have captured the imagination of fashionistas and laymen alike. This film craze has given birth to a growing international circuit of fashion film festivals, which can now be found in an astounding 46 countries across five continents, with some of the most famous being La Jolla, London, Berlin, Milan and Buenos Aires. This growing festival category celebrates innovation in design, art, photography and culture. The festivals showcase the craft of fashion storytelling, and explore diversity and the creative complexity of this uniquely mesmerizing industry. The most renowned is the La Jolla International Film Festival, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in July. Touted as the “Cannes of the Fashion World,” it is the most important event for professionals in the field and provides an annual view of what’s trending worldwide. HOTEL INDIGO The ideal spot from which to explore Manhattan’s Lower East Side. 71 Ludlow Street, NYC
V
ital, energetic and constantly changing, the Lower East Side is a quintessential New York City neighborhood. As one of the oldest in Manhattan, the area gets its personality from the rich tapestry of its history. It was once home to immigrants passing through Ellis Island in the 1920s and specters of that era remain, including Katz’s Delicatessen, Russ & Daughters and original tenements still standing amidst the new construction. The neighborhood evolved into a creative playground in the 1960s as a wave of musicians and artists took up residence. The area became known for its rebellious,
young and edgy nature, from the famous graffitists of the ’ 80s and ’ 90s to the style makers of today. The LES is one of NYC’s most soughtafter neighborhoods, whether you’re catching up at a coffeehouse, dining out or partying until dawn. In the heart of the LES sits the awardwinning Hotel Indigo, a boutique-style urban oasis. The hotel expresses the vibrant voice of the LES’s street style, people, galleries, tastes, flavors, libations, sounds and fashions. Hotel Indigo has 294 spacious guest rooms, including four suites and a duplex penthouse suite with stunning terraces way
THE PARTY IS AT MR. PURPLE! Mr. Purple, the rooftop bar and restaurant on the 15th floor of Hotel Indigo, captures the artistic spirit of today’s LES. Designed by acclaimed design firm Crème Design, the space recreates an artist-loft ambiance with indoor and outdoor areas of reclaimed wood

peru, meet
JAPAN!
Two fish-loving nations get together in the kitchen, with delicious results. By Donna Rolando
There are chefs who cringe at the word “fusion” for its whiff of shallow trendiness. But whatever you call it, tasty things can happen when two cuisines collide, and one of the hottest such combos these days is Peruvian/Japanese fare. After making waves in Europe, this food phenomenon is catching on in cities like Miami and New York, and one taste of it will probably make you glad the two traditions met. This may be just the gastronomic sizzle you need to lift you out of your dining rut or make an impression on date night. The name Nikkei describes a population of Japanese who immigrated to Peru in the late 19th century, along with their descendants. But in time the word has also come to signify their cuisine itself, a reflection of life and culture built into recipes over generations that runs deeper than the word fusion might suggest. It is no stranger to mainstream Peruvian kitchens. We know that mere proximity—as with oil and water—does not make the right mix for any recipe, let alone many. So what is it about the marriage of spicy Peruvian and delicate Japanese cuisine that warrants your taste buds’ immediate attention? The answer lies under the sea. The two cultures have in common a heavy reliance on fresh fish in the diet, and the Japanese have put their own take on Peruvian ingredients, such as limes, corn, aji chili peppers, yucca and potatoes. Even the Peruvian staple ceviche has been reshaped in Japanese kitchens in a process that shaves hours off its prep time. Yes, Nikkei has flourished in the South American melting pot that is Peru, a land known for a bounty of cultural influences in the kitchen that have contributed to its reputation for world-class fine dining. The fact that the Nikkei eatery Maido in Lima recently ranked No. 7 on the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list, judged by a panel of 1,000+ culinary experts, says a lot. Yet if you live in the States, Nikkei is likely to have escaped your radar or hidden itself on the menu under the heading of Japanesestyle dishes. (Do Japanese curry-filled empanadas ring any bells? If so, you may have already sampled Nikkei.) Surprisingly for a country always searching for the next food revolution, America has been slow to jump on this culinary bandwagon, but restaurants such as Midtown Manhattan’s Sen Sakana (which translates to “one thousand fish”) are working hard to change that. Step inside Sen Sakana and you’ll find flavorful combinations, such as crispy seafood with salsa criolla or quinoa-crusted chicken breast with black vinegar nanban sauce, and sides that include corn, asparagus and Japanese sweet potato. The fact that octopus and eel are featured on the menu is a mark of the Japanese influence. The Japanese raw fish dish tiradito is an example of where “sashimi meets ceviche” in a Peruvian yellow pepper mango sauce. If Nikkei has more history than some combo cuisines, it’s also true that it’s still evolving. Says Sen Sakana: “It is a cuisine whose identity is constantly being redefined and enriched, making it an exciting one to work with.”
OTHER FUSIONS TO TRY Peruvian/Japanese cuisine, known as Nikkei, is just one example of the creative blending of two food traditions. These other cultural combinations are also worth sampling at some mealtime very soon: GREEK/AMERICAN What it is: The evolution of Greek cuisine prepared by Greek-Americans and their offspring under the influence of American culture. What to try: A Greek-American gyro with meat (perhaps lamb), olive oil, tomatoes, onions, french fries and tzatziki sauce (yogurt, garlic and cucumber) served as we’ve come to expect it to be—in a pita so crammed that two hands are required. A Greek-American taverna is also a good place to discover pastitsio, baked layers of thick pasta with ground meat; or souvlaki, chunks of meat and sometimes veggies served on a skewer. EAST ASIAN/ITALIAN What it is: It’s not just about the noodles, although that is an obvious connection between Italy and East Asian lands such as Japan or China. A culinary philosophy is also shared: letting ingredients stand out for their own qualities. What to try: Spaghetti with miso or linguine with tomato and uni (Japanese for sea urchin), the latter being no stranger to today’s restaurant menus across the country. Or go beyond noodles to indulge in a head-on fish prepared with Italian Castelvetrano olives, capers, Cantonese ginger and scallion. LEBANESE/MEXICAN What it is: Lebanese immigrants to Mexico have fused their culinary style into Mexican cuisine, even creating their own taco—the al pastor—among many novel dishes. What to try: Don’t be surprised on your travels through Mexico to find Lebanese-inspired kibbeh, a turnover-like fried dough fritter packed with minced ground beef and chopped onion. Or you can sample taquitos de parra, made of grape or cabbage leaves stuffed with ground meat, rice and garlic. JAMAICAN/PHILIPPINE What it is: The culinary influence of Asians who immigrated to Jamaica over the last century. What to try: Whole jerk roast duck flavored with Scotch bonnet peppers and allspice.

the BLDWN evolution President and creative director Johnathan Crocker tells how a denim brand expanded, shed its vowels—and kept its soul. By Karen Alberg Grossman
It’s not too often a fashion brand comes along that’s modern but wearable, edgy but not over the edge. Yet Johnathan Crocker, new creative director and president of BLDWN (formerly Baldwin), had that vision for a celebrated men’s denim brand, seeking to turn it into a complete contemporary collection with denim at its core. With roots in Kansas City, Baldwin Denim was founded in 2009 by Matt and Emily Baldwin. Under their direction, the brand was named one of “The Best New Menswear Designers in America” by GQ in 2013 and was also a finalist for the Vogue/Council of Fashion Designers of America fashion award in 2015. Crocker
met the Baldwins in New York City two years ago and was soon asked to join their company. “I was just leaving a long tenure at AG and didn’t want to jump into something immediately,” he says. “So I began consulting for Baldwin in August 2017; after five months, I came on full time as president.” Crocker’s background includes a degree in communications, teaching English and history, advertising and working in publishing (The New Yorker, Details, Modern Luxury) before joining AG, where he collaborated closely with the design team and became VP of global communications. His first move at Baldwin was to open an office in Los Angeles (25 people) while keeping a satellite office (eight people) in Kansas City. “I believed that building a global brand required moving elements of the business (design, communications, production, retail, e-commerce, sales) from KC to LA,” he says. “We officially opened our LA office in March of last year. It provides us cost- and time-savings benefits and access to a larger fashion talent pool. Our headquarters (finance, HR and some logistics) and our heritage remain in Kansas City.” Crocker is passionate about maintaining that heritage while modernizing the collection, which now comprises both men’s and women’s fashion. “We use top-quality fabrics, mostly Japanese denim with minimal distressing and less rip and repair for a clean and elevated aesthetic,” he says. “All of our denim is substantial, meaning it feels like denim, not like yoga pants. Our focus is on fit and comfort.” Crocker also redesigned the logo (dropping two vowels to signal a change with the brand and to reflect a more modern and “architectural” direction) and began building a collection that’s contemporary but not stark and sterile. “American design is rooted in function and utility,” he explains. “With BLDWN, each snap, zipper and seam serves a purpose; every item is designed to be relevant now and in years to come.” The inspiration for BLDWN’s fall ’19 collection is NYC bohemian: a high/low juxtaposition influenced by artists and musicians of the late ’60s and early ’70s such as Lou Reed, Brian Jones, Stephen Shore and Glenn O’Brien. That calls for modern takes on American workwear, as the timeless, easyto-wear pieces in the fall ’19 collection examine the role these functional items played in music subcultures. “It’s a challenging time to be in the fashion industry,” confides Crocker, “but we’re incredibly excited to tell our story.”

TIPS Every man can look incredible in a tuxedo—as long as it’s the right one. By Darius Amos
Most of us aren’t walking the red carpet or accepting an Academy Award. But dressing to the nines for a wedding or gala is something we’ve all done—and it’s likely you’ll attend another formal event where looking sharp is part of the agenda. Of course, you don’t get to wear a tuxedo every day (not even George Clooney does that), so when you invest in the ultimate piece of formal wear, its style and fit should be nothing shy of impeccable. Consider these tips before you suit up for something special:
102 FOR.fw19.Tuxedo Fit V2.indd 102

1.
4.
The wing—a stand-up collar with downward points—is the most formal style, while the mandarin or band collar offers a more contemporary look. Prefer to wear a necktie instead of a bow tie? The wide spread collar is a great option.
Don’t overlook this detail. The padding of your tux jacket should not extend beyond the tip of your shoulders (no shoulder divot). If it does, your jacket is too big.
2.
JACKET CUT
SHIRT COLLAR
SHIRT FRONT
A shirt front with no placket and concealed buttons is clean and contemporary while a pleated front worn with studs adds textural interest. For a classic, elegant look, try a smooth bib-front shirt, perhaps in a pique fabric, with room for studs.
3.
JACKET LAPEL
You know the choices: peak, shawl and notch. Wear a silk-faced peak lapel for highly formal occasions and a rounded shawl style when you want to soften your look. While versatile, a notch lapel is the least formal for a tuxedo.
JACKET SHOULDER
5.
While you can’t go wrong with a traditionalcut jacket, a modern fit, which is trimmer through the chest and shoulder, offers fashion-forward styling and a flattering silhouette—and it’s still appropriate for any black-tie event.
8.
PANT LEG WIDTH
Find a cut that flatters your waist, thighs and calves. Pay attention to how the fabric drapes—anything too tight will create wrinkles, while too much material will be baggy.
9.
PANT LEG LENGTH
Pants should have half or no break. See your tailor immediately if they are bunching at your ankles (or if your ankles are showing). The half break is the standard, showing a slight dent where the hem rests on the top of the shoe.
6.
10.
When paired with a properly fitted shirt, the jacket sleeve should show a half-inch of the shirt cuff—just enough for others to see your cuff links.
Patent loafers and oxfords, traditionally worn with a tux, are best suited for the most formal events. Both styles in suede or polished leather will give you a low-key look.
SLEEVE LENGTH
SHOES
7.
JACKET LENGTH
We’ll work with you if you’re an NBA center, but for the regular guy, the piece should cover your backside. Another guide: With your arms at your side, the jacket should end between your thumb’s knuckle and base.
