WELCOME LETTER
AWARD-WINNING BREAST CARE IN THIS ISSUE, MONMOUTH HE ALTH & LIFE UNVEILS ITS “Best Of” choices as determined by its readers, who were asked to vote for the restaurants, shops and services they consider the best of the best in Monmouth County. For a third consecutive year, the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center was determined to be a “Best Of.” Our breast center was once again named a recipient of the Women’s Choice Award as one of America’s Best Breast Centers, acknowledging its dedication to providing exceptional patient care and treatment. By carrying the Women’s Choice Award seal, the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center has signified its commitment to a global mission to elevate the patient experience for women and all patients as one of America’s Best Breast Centers. We have earned this award by having met the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) standards from the American College of Surgeons. As one of America’s Best Breast Centers, the Wilentz Center also carries the Seal of the American College of Radiologists as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, and scored above-average on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services patient satisfaction measures. We’re extremely proud to be recognized with the Women’s Choice Award as one of America’s Best Breast Centers, an award that affirms our commitment to offering our patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease. The Women’s Choice Award helps women and their families by providing recommendations they can trust and use when making healthcare choices. Recommendations are the single most important consideration used by women in selecting a hospital or care center, and by letting women know which breast centers in their area are among America’s best, we are able to reduce risk by helping them make better decisions and smarter healthcare choices. Monmouth Medical Center introduced the Wilentz Center in 1994 to provide our patients with clinically excellent and compassionate care in a supportive and comfortable setting that provides the very best in breast cancer detection and treatment. In 2010, it became the state’s first Certified Quality Comprehensive Breast Center of Excellence. We also hold the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for our comprehensive breast cancer treatment program. This prestigious certification recognizes us for meeting all national standards for quality and safety for breast-cancer specific care. You can read more about the excellence of our comprehensive breast center in Monmouth’s “In Good Health” pages, which spotlight the outstanding outcomes of our breast surgeons and the importance of choosing a comprehensive breast center for screening mammography. In an issue that is dedicated to the “best,” we hope it is reassuring for women in our community to know that the very best of breast care is available right here at Monmouth Medical Center. Sincerely,
Warm, delicious and made to order donuts along with premium roasted coffees. 1275 Route 35, Middletown • Ventura Plaza 732-671-3825 • duckdonuts.com

Tighten Sagging Skin with New Technologies DR. THEOCHARIDES of Beginnings Aesthetic & Laser is at the forefront of ThermiRF®, a groundbreaking non-surgical technology for tightening loose, sagging skin and reducing cellulite with radio frequency generated heat that penetrates the layers of the dermis to promote collagen production. The beauty of ThermiRF® is that it can be used on parts of the face and body that once could not be tightened—with zero downtime! The technology is long lasting, has little or no discomfort and the process activates a natural healing response without damaging tissue. Dr. Theocharides’ office was one of 10 in the country to conduct a now completed study with ThermiVa®, one of the ThermiRF® technology treatments used for vaginal rejuvenation. Women with vaginal looseness, sexual dysfunction, dryness

and urinary leakage from birthing or aging experienced extraordinary results with this procedure, and it is now available for you! In addition Dr. Theocharides was one of a handful of qualified cosmetic physicians around the country who participated in the now ThermiSmooth250™ clinical study for cellulite reduction (now FDA approved). Through a series of four short, pain-free treatments, patients typically experience a tightening of the skin and subsequent shrinkage of the treated area. ThermiSmooth250™ effectively targets leg and buttock cellulite and abdominal fatty deposits to help patients achieve smoother looking skin that gradually tightens over time. For those who have had little success reducing through diet and exercise, ThermiSmooth250™ can be the perfect, nonsurgical solution!

Berry season is coming to an end, but there’s a plethora of other delicious fruits (and veggies) just waiting to be picked at farms in and around Monmouth County. Here’s a list of spots where “pick-yourown” is a popular and sometimes preferred harvest method. Head to Battleview Orchards (91 Wemrock Rd., Freehold, 732.462.0756, battlevieworchards .com) for sweet peaches and nectarines in August and for early-season apple varieties in September. Admission is free, and price is determined by the weight of your harvest. Be sure to stop by the country market and bakery on your way out to pick up a freshbaked pie. There’s no shortage of options at Eastmont Orchards (181 Route 537 East, Colts Neck, 732.542.5404, eastmontorchards .com). Home to 15 varieties of peaches and 19 types of apples (most of which will be available in September), this local farm is one of the county’s premier picking spots. It’s free to enter, and you only have to pay per pound for your fruit.
At press time, berries were still available at Earth Friendly Organic Farm (17 Olde Noah Hunt Rd., Clarksburg, 609.259.9744, earthfriendlyorganicfarm.com). Organic blueberries, blackberries and raspberries were plentiful and ready to be picked. Don’t forget to grab an extra handful or two to store in your freezer—they’ll be a nice surprise during the winter. Admission is free, and pails to collect your berries are provided. The cost is $10 per full pail and $5 for a half-full pail. If produce variety is something you seek, Lee Turkey Farm (201 Hickory Corner Rd., East Windsor, 609.448.0629, leeturkeyfarm. com) is the fruit-picking place for you. Peaches, apples, nectarines, pears, melons, raspberries and blackberries are ripe and up for grabs. And don’t forget your veggies! Tomatoes, eggplant, sweet corn, peppers, snap beans, cucumbers, zucchini, winter squash and more are in season and ready for purchase as well. Admission is free, and the price you pay is determined by the weight of your produce.
For furry friends After Superstorm Sandy many families in Monmouth were forced to choose between their own necessities—food, clothing, shelter—and providing the basics for their cherished pets. Thanks to the Monmouth County SPCA, furry friends in our area will never go hungry again. Pet owners in need can visit the Pet Pantry at the Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown. Think of it as a food bank for cats, dogs and other loveable creatures—it offers low-cost or free food, leashes, litter and other supplies to folks facing economic hardship. The Pet Pantry project started up shortly after Sandy, when volunteers went door-to-
door distributing pet food and supplies. SPCA administrators saw a need to make the service permanent, establishing the Pet Pantry inside the Maureen O’Brien Thrift Store. The pantry outgrew that space in three years, having served more than 1,200 families and donated 200,000 pounds of food. To help keep the new pantry (which opened in February) stocked, you can donate pet food and supplies on weekends. The pantry is open 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m.–1:45 p.m. on Wednesdays. Pet Pantry, 260 Wall St., Eatontown, 732.440.1170; monmouthcountyspca.org monmouth he alth & Life

Mothers in training
Now that your baby has joined the family, you may feel like your days of socializing and exercising are behind you. But that doesn’t have to be the case if you take a Baby Boot Camp class, says Dena Farash, who runs BBC courses in Monmouth County parks like Meadow Ridge in Rumson. The camp is a stroller fitness program—women perform a variety of cardio, strength-training, stretching and abdominal exercises led by a certified personal trainer who specializes in working with newly post partum and pregnant women. The best part? Classes are done with newborns and strollers by mom’s side. “Mom is able to get in a great 60-minute workout while spending quality time with her baby,” says Farash, who is one of the trainers. “Sometimes motherhood can feel so isolating. Having a physical outlet such as Baby Boot Camp to share with other moms is a fantastic way to break down barriers, challenge ourselves, support each other and create friendships.” And the fun goes beyond class—mothers (and babies) also have play dates, lunches and pool parties. “This group is here to support each other, build each other up and lend a hand (or an ear),” says Farash. Interested? Give Baby Boot Camp a call. There’s nothing to lose—the first class is free! Baby Boot Camp—Holmdel & Rumson, 732.497.8247; babybootcamp.com
Bury the hatchet Trade in your darts and cornhole bean bags—there’s an axe with your name on it and it’s waiting to be tossed! Elevate your game and channel your inner lumberjack at Stumpy’s Hatchet House in Eatontown, which is believed to be the first indoor hatchet-throwing facility in the country. We know what you’re thinking: How can throwing a hatchet be safe? According to Kelly Josberger, who founded Stumpy’s along with her husband, Stuart, and friends Trish and Mark Oliphant, the sport is growing in popularity and it’s 100 percent safe. “Safety is our top priority,” she says. “We train everyone on proper throwing first and go through a list of rules and expectations. It’s not much different than throwing darts in a bar, but our pits are fenced in and always monitored.” Visitors can bring their own snacks and beverages—buckets of ice are available if you want to chill your brews—or have pizza and Chinese food delivered. But leave your hatchets at home—Stumpy’s provides the equipment. Two-hour throwing sessions are $40 per person. Best bet: Come during Hatchet Happy Hour (4–6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday) for a half-off participation deal. Walk-ins are welcome, but online reservations are encouraged. Stumpy’s also hosts events like bachelor parties, corporate gatherings and team-building exercises. They’ll even work with caterers to help you plan your social throwdown. “We have people coming in—younger and older—not knowing what to expect, and they always leave happy,” Josberger reports. “Our whole vibe is to make you feel like you’re coming to our house for a few hours of fun.” Stumpy’s Hatchet House, 22 Meridian Rd., Unit 5, Eatontown, 732.544.5069; stumpyshh.com

Brand-new brews
Venturing into the beer-brewing business is an uncommon next step for an exiting politician, but that’s where Mike Skudera headed when his term as Tinton Falls mayor expired at the end of 2013. He connected and strategized with friends Peter Artherholt and Chris Hanigan, home brewers for more than 15 years, and the trio formed the Jughandle Brewing Company. They debuted this spring with a six-drink menu that you can try in flights, pints and Crowlers (a can that’s filled and sealed on site). The drink menu will change regularly, so be sure to visit often. While you’re there, take a brewery tour and see how the craft beers are made. “You can hang out, have a beer and check out the equipment,” Skudera says. Great artists are not born, they are educated. That’s the philosophy of a unique new art school in Red Bank that specializes in providing disabled veterans with a comprehensive, tuitionfree art education. “They sacrificed so much for our country, so we wanted to give something back to them,” says Stephanie Gronchick, general administrator of Ani Art Academies, a global nonprofit with locations in Anguilla, the Dominican Republic, Pennsylvania, Sri Lanka and Thailand. (“Ani” comes from a Swahili word “andjani” that means to be on a journey or a path.) A total of 21 spots are available in the program, and so far a handful of veterans have signed up. Students learn through repetition, using charcoal drawing, oil painting and other mediums. “We teach art how one teaches music,” Gronchick explains. “If you repeat skills over and over, it becomes an automatic action.” Students work at their own pace—the program takes between three and four years to complete. Admission is rolling, so veterans can sign up at any time at aniartacademies.org. The school also welcomes all veterans to participate in a free painting class, held each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ani Art Academy, 143 Broad St., Red Bank, 570.822.4111; aniartacademies.org

High-fat vs low-fat dairy
No longer in the rear
The butt is not taking a back seat anymore. Surgical procedures involving the buttocks are up since 2013—98 percent for implants and 44 percent for lifts.
Eat cereal to stay healthy
Folks who ate a daily serving of cereal were less likely to die of heart disease, diabetes and digestive cancer—24 percent, 30 percent and 13 percent, respectively—than those who ate none. Scientists theorize that the fiber in cereal keeps weight, inflammation and cholesterol in check.

A recent study of 3,000 adults found that those who consumed the most full-fat dairy products had a significantly lower risk—almost 50 percent—of developing diabetes. While the study does not prove a cause and effect, it does point to avoiding food choices based on a single nutrient. —Circulation

Cut stroke risk with chocolate
Go ahead, feed that sweet tooth. People who ate about a half ounce of milk or dark chocolate daily had a 22 percent lower risk of stroke than folks who abstained. Study authors suggest that the flavonoids in the cacao and the calcium and fatty acids in the milk might be the reason as these are thought to maintain healthy blood lipid levels and blood pressure. —Heart

When speed and precision matter most The Institute for Advanced Radiation Oncology unveils sophisticated linear accelerator.
No longer is a trip into New York City required to receive the best oncology care or to find the most up-to-date medical technology. Monmouth Medical Center continues to be a leader in both, and the recent addition of highprecision radiotherapy equipment is reducing cancer patients’ recovery time and with fewer side effects. At the hospital’s Institute for Advanced Radiation Oncology, the new Elekta Versa HD linear accelerator is used to deliver a sophisticated and precise form of intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) to a malignant tumor or specific areas within the tumor. What does that mean for cancer patients? For those receiving standard radiation therapy, patients will benefit from the speed and accuracy—treatment is so precise that the healthy tissue surrounding the cancer receives lower doses of radiation than if delivered by more conventional therapy methods. Patients as well as clinicians dealing with more complex cases—when cancers are located in areas that demand an extra level of tumor targeting precision or lesions that require higher doses to reduce the length of treatment—benefit from Versa HD’s advanced beam-shaping and imaging technologies and high dose-rate delivery. The precision of the Versa HD is an advantage, for example, for those undergoing procedures like stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT)—both of which deliver higher doses of radiation and in a smaller focused area than traditional therapy. “With this new technology, we can now bring target immobilization to new levels through automated gating,” says Mitchell Weiss, M.D., chairman of radiation oncology at Monmouth Medical Center. “For anatomies affected by respiratory motion, such as breast, this provides non-invasive, internal immobilization of the target, triggering radiation delivery when anatomy is immobilized.” Versa HD was also developed with patient safety and the ease of use by clinicians in mind. The machine was designed with new ergonomic features and softer streamlined shapes, creating a confident and relaxed treatment environment. The Versa HD also combines low mechanical noise with ambient lighting effects, bringing patient comfort to the forefront.

The
best option
for breast care
The Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center provides comprehensive treatment under one roof.
When detected in its earliest stages, breast cancer is highly treatable and beatable—the National Breast Cancer Foundation says the survival rate in those cases is 100 percent. A comprehensive breast care center is the best option to protect yourself—the medical professionals care for you from your initial meeting and screening mammography, and they’re with you, step-by-step, through every treatment and eventually the recovery process. That’s exactly what happens at the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center, which has been honored three years in a row with the Women’s Choice Award as one of the nation’s finest breast care facilities. It houses all breast care modalities under one umbrella, giving patients the best clinical management and treatment options, says David Sharon, M.D., medical director of the Leon Hess Cancer Center at Monmouth Medical Center. “By carrying the Women’s Choice Award seal, the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center has signified its commitment to a global mission to elevate the patient experience for women and all patients as one of America’s best breast centers,” he says. If you’re looking for the best breast specialists and surgeons in the region, those affiliated with Monmouth Medical Center are among the elite and they have been recognized for their groundbreaking procedures. For instance, they were the first in the area to offer protocol-tested sentinel lymph node biopsies—an alternative to major surgery that determines whether a woman’s breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. “We provide our patients with compassionate and efficient service using state-of-the-art technology,” Dr. Sharon says. “We are
24
dedicated to providing top quality service, education and awareness to our patients.” The center’s multidisciplinary panel of breast and reconstructive surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists meet each week to consider all elements of a patient’s care. With the litany of specialists on hand, each patient has an opportunity to receive multiple second opinions for treatment options. The comprehensive breast cancer treatment program has met or exceeded all national standards for quality and safety for breast-cancer specific care, earning the center the prestigious Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval. In addition to its first-rate personnel, the Wilentz Center is equipped with the most up-to-date screening and diagnostic

top-notch breast cancer surgeons
Monmouth Medical Center offers advanced breast surgery led by a team of the region’s finest boardcertified surgeons who specialize in breast surgery. Monmouth’s breast surgeons are a part of a team of highly qualified physicians who treat a large volume of breast cancer patients and stress attention to detail, consideration of all treatment options, and a full panel discussion at each point in treatment through weekly multidisciplinary team meetings. These dedicated surgeons are able to counsel women sensitively regarding their options, whether it be breast conservation or mastectomy, as well as offer the latest techniques including nipple sparing and oncoplasty at the time of surgery. The goal is to provide women with not only the best odds of survival, but the confidence to know that once they have beat cancer that they are able to look and feel like themselves with no loss of femininity. This is an important component that allows women to move on to becoming survivors, rather than living with the “battle scars” that cancer left behind. Shown here is Monmouth’s team of breast surgeons, seated from left, Mark Schwartz, M.D., Manpreet Kohli, M.D., and Stephen Chagares, M.D.; standing, from left, Michael Goldfarb, M.D., Ernest Ginalis, M.D., Aron Gornish, M.D., and Sumy Chang, M.D.
imaging technologies, including tomosynthesis (which produces a 3-D image of the breast using low dose X-rays at various angles), breast specific gamma imaging (a technique for identifying cancerous lesions in the breast) and fine-needle and stereotactic biopsies (minimally invasive, highly accurate and painless alternatives to surgical biopsies). With its advanced technology, the center is designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology’s Commission on Quality and Safety and the Commission on Breast Imaging. It is the first facility in the state and the 20th in the country to earn Gold Seal Ac-
creditation for breast MRI; it is also accredited for mammography, breast ultrasound and stereotactic breast biopsy. The Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center is located on the Monmouth Medical Center campus in Long Branch and with satellite locations in Colts Neck, Howell and Lakewood for the convenience of its patients. All imaging exams conducted at the satellite locations are performed by experienced mammography technologists and interpreted by dedicated breast imagers. Hospital feted for festival partnership
Taking care of the future
Shannon Corci and Bill Arnold, president and CEO of Monmouth Medical Center
Monmouth Medical Center supports the arts through student scholarships. The arts are alive and well, and Monmouth Medical Center is doing its part to ensure that the dancers, painters, vocalists and musicians of tomorrow are in good hands today. Each year, the hospital helps pave the way for a future artist by awarding its Monmouth Medical Center–RWJBarnabas Health Arts Impact Scholarship. Singer and songwriter Shannon Corci, who graduated from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School in June, is this year’s honoree. “Shannon is a young woman who already has an impressive resume for her talents as a singer/songwriter,” says Bill Arnold, president and chief executive officer of Monmouth Medical Center. “But she impressed us the most through letters of recommendation praising her for always being mindful to give back to her community.” Shannon was the driving force behind fundraising concerts in support of Superstorm Sandy relief efforts, arts education and youth services. She will enroll in the Popular Music Program at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music this fall. The hospital’s scholarship is one of
four offered as part of the Count Basie Theatre’s Basie Awards, which recognizes outstanding high school drama performances as well as the impact the arts can have on a student moving on to higher education. Monmouth Medical Center has been the theatre’s partner in recognizing high school students throughout the county since 2013, and it is the exclusive sponsor of the Basie Awards ceremony, which is conducted each May. “Even though our missions are different, our goals are the same: a vision for our community, based on a culture of high expectations and a stellar quality of life,” says Arnold. “The hospital supports the growth of the Basie and its vision for the future, which includes the creation of a regional center for the performing arts that will encompass an entire city block. Monmouth Medical Center is proud of its longstanding support of the growth and expansion of the historic nonprofit Count Basie Theatre.”
Margaret Fisher, M.D., medical director of The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center, recently accepted a certificate of appreciation from the Hope Academy Charter School, which saluted RWJBarnabas Health and Monmouth Medical Center for their role as sponsors of the Asbury Park Music in Film Festival. As an exclusive founding partner of the springtime event, RWJBarnabas Health announced a multi-year deal that has expanded to arts and culture within the Asbury Park community all year round. The festival, which took place in April this year, raises funds for the Asbury Park Music Foundation and benefits music education for children throughout the city, including students at Hope Academy. “As Monmouth Medical Center is an intricate part of the fabric of the local community and is dedicated to serving the people of the city of Asbury Park, we strongly support the Asbury Park Music in Film Festival and its music programs for children,” says Dr. Fisher. “We are particularly proud in 2016, which marks the 10th anniversary of The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center, to support the Asbury Park Music Foundation. Along with the festival organizers, we understand the impact the arts can have on a student moving towards higher education, and we are proud to help these underserved children receive music education, lessons, instruments, programs and social connection opportunities through crucial programs such as Music Saved My Life.” Prior to the certificate presentation, Dr. Fisher provided parents at Hope Academy with general health and wellness guidance for their children, including vaccine and nutrition information. This program was made possible through a community health education outreach initiative by The Unterberg Children’s Hospital Leadership Council. Margaret Fisher, M.D., medical director of The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center (right), is presented with a certificate of appreciation by DaVisha Pratt, Hope Academy Charter School principal and chief school administrator.

Medical Health Center, a Monmouth Medical Centeraffiliated facility located on Route 35 South in Middletown, recently welcomed a host of physician specialists to bring central Monmouth County residents convenient access to the best in joint and spine surgery and obstetric and gynecological care. “At Medical Health Center, our patients’ needs are our top priority,” says Monmouth Medical Center cardiologist Joseph Clemente M.D., F.A.C.C., who founded Medical Health Center in 1995. “Our network of physicians provides comprehensive, compassionate and innovative cutting-edge care for Middletown area residents at every stage of life at our conveniently located center.” Through Barnabas Health Medical Group, a multispecialty group practice comprised of highly trained and experienced world-class primary and specialty-care physicians, Medical Health Center has been offering the central Monmouth County region easy access to an array of health care services since 2010. And now, the center offers its patients the convenience of appointments with joint replacement surgeon Mark Gesell, M.D., and spine surgeon Praveen Yalamanchili, M.D., and the physicians associated with West Long Branch OB/GYN, including Kenneth R. Skorenko, M.D., Dominick A. LoBraico, D.O., Jennifer D. Pompliano, D.O., and Karen M. Smith, D.O. In late August, they will be joined by new West Long Branch OB/GYN associate Sharon Jackson, M.D. These physicians provide access to the world-class orthopaedic and ob/gyn care that is available at Monmouth Medical Center. The Monmouth Medical Center Total Joint Replacement and Spine Center provides world-class care and treatment options to patients who have experienced the pain and limitation of permanent and progressive damage to hips, knees, shoulders and the spine. The hospital holds Disease Specific Joint Commission certification in both total hip and knee and spine surgery, and is the only hospital in the region to offer Makoplasty® partial knee and total hip replacement.
For maternity care, The Leapfrog Group, the nation’s leading experts on patient safety, has ranked Monmouth Medical Center as the safest hospital for maternity care in the region, with Monmouth scoring well above the standard of care in key areas of maternity care. “I’m very proud to say that the Leapfrog Group has validated what we have known for a very long time—our maternity services’ longstanding commitment to providing quality care is outstanding,” says Bill Arnold, president and CEO of Monmouth Medical Center. “We deliver the most babies in Monmouth and Ocean counties for good reason—we offer the safest obstetrical and gynecologic services in the nation and we continue to expand and upgrade our facility to match our commitment to quality care and patient safety.” Additionally, the Medical Health Center has a staff of cardiologists who, in addition to Dr. Clemente, include Peter Farrugia, M.D., Ajay Shah, M.D., Khalil Suaray, M.D., and Delia Dobrescu, M.D. These heart specialists offer patients convenient access to cardiac excellence, as well as the leading cardiac services offered at Monmouth Medical Center. Monmouth Medical Center is a regional leader in cardiac excellence and holds Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification for heart attack, acute coronary syndrome, advanced heart failure, cardiac rehabilitation and stroke and has been acknowledged by The Joint Commission as being in the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation to sustain quality outcomes. Additionally, the hospital holds Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure Gold Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association —recognition that signifies the hospital has reached an aggressive goal of treating heart failure patients for at least 90 days with 85 percent compliance to core standard levels of care outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology secondary prevention guidelines for heart failure patients. Purists say that true BBQ is owned by the southern states, but this Jersey franchise with two locations in Monmouth is a notable exception. Local Smoke, which started as a competition BBQ team almost 10 years ago, took home first-place awards for ribs and brisket at national contests in Kansas City and Georgia, respectively. Regulars rave about the joint’s authentic Carolina- and St. Louis-style barbecue sauces, the bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers and, of course, the slow-smoked beef and pork. You can get your ’cue to go too.

Monmouth foodies have long known that when it comes to the finest meats, butcher Stew Goldstein is their man. But Goldstein has received national acclaim as well. Several years ago, he earned the trust of notoriously tough chef Gordon Ramsay, who purchased cuts of meat to serve to customers, and just this past spring Food Network star Alton Brown publicly praised the pork roll sandwich. This old-fashioned traditional butcher shop serves up a wide variety of quality steaks and other meats as well as prepared foods, made-to-order sandwiches and delectable burgers. 2 Livoti’s Old World Market 1077 Route 34 North Aberdeen 732.566.2500 160 Route 9 North Englishtown 848.444.9600 livotisoldworld market.com 3 tie Citarella’s Meats & Deli 57 Prospect Ave. Red Bank 732.741.9059 citarellasmarket.com 3 tie Sabatos Prime Meats 113 Leonardville Rd. What could possibly make the light and fluffy creations served at Duck Donuts even better? Add ice cream! Possibly the best pastry hybrid since the Cronut, Duck Donuts’ warm donut ice cream sundae comes with vanilla or chocolate ice cream, a generous dollop of whipped cream and your choice of toppings—fudge, sprinkles, Oreos, etc. Craving individuality? Pick a plain donut, add a coating (sugars or icings), a topping (sprinkles, cookie crumbles or even bacon) and a drizzle (fudge, peanut butter) and the talented staff will whip up your own personalized pastry. 2 Purple Glaze 516 Summerfield Ave., Asbury Park, 732.361.5308 purpleglazedonuts.com 3 Broad Street Dough Co. 2005 Route 35 North, Oakhurst, 732.531.1401 broadstreetdoughco.com monmouth health & Life

New Restaurant 1 Tommy’s Tavern & Tap 1030 Ocean Ave., Sea Bright, 732.842.5044 tommystavernandtap.com
Successful local restaurateur and Brooklyn native Tommy Bonfiglio, known for Tommy’s Coal Fired Pizza, once again impresses with this rustic-chic restaurant serving up bar favorites with a twist, sushi and, of course, his famous crispy pizza pies. The tavern opened last year in the former Sea Bright post office and its adjacent spot, both vacated following Superstorm Sandy. Elements of the hundredyear-old building survived the top-to-bottom renovation—the original brick walls remain, and a beautiful new whiskey bar was constructed entirely of reclaimed wood from the structure. It’s a perfect place for grabbing a beer and a bite to eat and catching up with friends— perhaps over a game of bocce or cornhole.

Pizza for breakfast? You got it. At Talula’s, all the rules about the traditional pie go out the window to make room for the crispy, creative concoctions that have put this Asbury Park hot spot on the map. Perhaps it’s the hip Brooklyn-like vibe (with exposed brick and a backyard garden) or the eclectic menu featuring brunch pies (like green eggs and ham), vegan selections and the regulars’ favorite, the Beekeeper’s Lament (a pie with tomato sauce, hot Calabrian soppressata, fresh mozzarella and local honey). Daily grilled cheese specials, hearty salads, homemade sourdough sandwiches and even a kimchi dish fill out the menu for those who are searching for more than a slice.

With more than 40 draft beers, including Belgian and German imports as well as local brews, and almost twice as many bottles, you’re guaranteed to find something to satisfy your thirst here. Can’t decide? Simply ask one of the other friendly patrons sitting nearby at the long communal tables at this Asbury Park favorite. A rooftop bar complete with live music adds an element of fun to the already boisterous biergarten, and German-inspired fare, like giant soft pretzels, bratwurst and schnitzel, will keep you drinking. 3 Maloney’s 119 Main St. Matawan 732.583.4040 maloneyspubnj.com
Holy date night, Batman! Gotham Bar and Lounge may be relatively new to the Red Bank scene, having opened less than two years ago, but it’s already a favorite among locals looking for an exciting night out. The upscale lounge, which is designed oh-so-subtly to resemble Bruce Wayne’s mansion, offers light fare, a lively dance floor, big-screen televisions and a speakeasy-style cocktail list focusing on top-shelf whiskeys and bourbons. The DJed tunes might make it hard to leave the dance floor, but if you do step away to get a drink, check out the eclectic mix of artwork that’s sure to please both the comic book geek and the art lover alike.

Girls’ Night Out 1 Pinot’s Palette 100 Route 9 North, Manalapan, 732.637.8899 12 Broad St., Red Bank, 732.219.9222 pinotspalette.com
It’s possible you have an inner artist that has yet to be tapped—or should we say “uncorked?” Find out at this BYO studio where participants sip wine while taking part in an instructor-led painting class. The franchise started in Texas and has since grown to include locations all over the United States. Classes are two to three hours (longer classes are on Friday and Saturday nights), and the online calendar displays the piece of art the class will create. Gather your girlfriends, put on your best beret and come out for an evening of paint-and-sip fun. 2 The Woodhouse Day Spa 73 Broad St. Red Bank 732.345.7300 redbank.woodhousespas.com

Irish Pub 1 The Dublin House 30 Monmouth St., Red Bank, 732.747.6699, thedublinhouse.co
Raise a pint and say “sláinte!” at this traditional Irish restaurant and pub in the heart of Red Bank. Whether enjoying live music, laughing through a comedy show or cheering on your favorite “football” team (don’t make the mistake of calling it soccer), you’re sure to have a brilliant time here. This popular local watering hole often draws crowds, but there’s plenty of seating on two floors and a patio. Those looking for some authentic stick-tothe-ribs grub to pair with the pints may enjoy the shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash, or Dublin-style fish and chips. 2 tie Harrigan’s Pub 703 Baltimore Blvd. Sea Girt 732.449.8228 harriganspub.com 2 tie St. Stephen’s Green 2031 Route 71 South Spring Lake Heights 732.449.2626 ssgpub.com 3 McDonagh’s 2 W. Fashion has been an integral part of Angela Gengaro-Secul’s life for as long as she can recall—from making her own clothes in high school to graduating from FIT and embarking on a career as a high-fashion merchandising manager. Eventually, this Jersey Girl grew tired of the Big Apple and decided to return home, where she created Tula eight years ago. Since then, she’s made a name for herself by offering quality, fashionable, affordable clothing sold by expert consultants. She and her team of fashion BFFs will even bring clothes and accessories to your home in the event of a “fashion emergency.” Just text! 2 606 Boutique 606 River Rd., Fair Haven, 732.741.8111, 606river.com 3 Interwoven 511 Cookman Ave., Asbury Park, 732.775.1713, interwovenap.com

Personal Trainer
When creating Aspire, which opened in the summer of 2015, owner Brian Bott was himself aspiring—to make a positive change in the fitness industry. The fitness coach had envisioned a gym where members received individualized expert guidance to help them meet their athletic and nutrition goals, rather than the onesize-fits-all methods used at big-box facilities. Several levels of membership are available—the basic plan gives members unlimited access to the classes designed to target fat, strengthen muscles and speed metabolism. Other plans add on semi-private and private sessions. Each new member receives a consultation with a trainer and advice on setting and meeting goals.
Yoga Studio
Set in a classic Victorian home on the waterfront, this salon offers respite for customers, who are guaranteed to leave feeling renewed, refreshed and relaxed—and, of course, with a fabulous new ’do. Gerber Salon partners Lorraine DeVizia and Robert Gerber are dedicated to constantly pushing the envelope and staying ahead of the curve on the latest trends and techniques—one of the secrets to their nearly three decades of success. The talented staff members offer tips to their clients so that the polished salon look can be replicated easily at home. 2 The Concept Salon 2 Ryan Rd., Marlboro 732.536.8500, theconceptsalons.com 3 Elan Hair Studio 2150 Route 35 North, Sea Girt 732.449.9122, elanhairstudionj.com

Pet parents looking to pamper their furbabies with a full spa/ salon treatment will find the luxury service they desire at this Monmouth grooming facility. Owner Donna Schone has five dogs at home and understands first-hand the importance of keeping them comfortable and happy during a grooming session. In addition to standard grooming services, canines can be treated to add-on treatments, like a “blueberry facial,” which includes a massage, tear-stain removal and a conditioning treatment, or even a manicure and nontoxic dye job (who doesn’t love a pink poodle?). While not being tended to, canine clients can roam around the safe confines of a playroom, with or without other dogs—no caged animals here. 2 Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming 1121 Route 34 North, Aberdeen 732.441.9663, woofgangbakery.com

999 Palmer Ave., Ste. 1, Holmdel, NJ 07733 | 732.671.7100 | isaveteeth.com DR. WAYNE A. ALDREDGE is president of the American Academy of Periodontology –the first NJ president in the Academy’s 102 years. A great achievement for a Jersey boy. But for a child of dental-phobes, it’s a miracle. How did parents with a fear of dentists produce the nation’s top periodontist? “My parents told us about their childhood dental visits which were bad enough to make them avoid dentists, which unfortunately led to health problems as adults. They were determined to make sure that my brothers and I stayed healthy with regular care.” His parents’ stories inspired Dr. Aldredge to pursue dentistry, and eventually periodontics. Because of his parents’ experience, he prioritizes patient comfort, using technology he trusts for the most painfree treatment possible, and designing an office to set nervous minds at ease. Who has he won over? “My whole family. Childhood friends.” And most importantly, Mom and Dad.

She began her long career of over 30 years in the swimming pool industry by working after school with her parents, Nicholas and Flora Christofi, the founders of Nicholas Pools. When they retired, Theodora and her husband, Sotiris, purchased the family business and grew it into one of Monmouth County’s largest backyard retailers specializing in vinyl liner in-ground swimming pools, pool restoration, hot tubs, maintenance and service. Theodora has paved the way for women in the pool and spa industry, winning awards including Woman of Distinction by the Professional Women in Construction. Nicholas Pools has also won numerous awards for its custom in-ground pools and spas that have created tropical paradises right here in Monmouth County.

He has arrived with his own Rumson store which opened three years ago. Now at thirty-something, Tony is a well-loved fixture in the community. Perfect for snacking, This fuzzy little green bean is a healthy Handful—and fun to eat too. If you’ve ever eaten at a Japanese restaurant, you’ve likely sampled edamame (pronounced eh-dah-MA-may). These young green soybeans are typically served in their fuzzy pod, steamed and sprinkled with coarse salt, and are eaten by dragging the pod between the teeth, releasing the beans. The nutty, buttery flavor and somewhat crunchy texture make edamame a popular snack or appetizer, but the beans are also low in calories, high in protein and fiber, and incredibly easy to prepare at home.
Power Up One cup of unshelled edamame rings in at just 190 calories and yields a hefty eight grams of fiber. It’s also a complete protein (meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids), boasting 17 grams a cup—about as much as three eggs. Edamame is an excellent source of folate, manganese and vitamin K too, as well as a good source of copper, phosphorous, magnesium, thiamin and iron. And, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research, it contains a variety of phytochemicals that may be beneficial in preventing and fighting cancer. So munch away!
Buy/ Store/ Serve Edamame can be purchased fresh, frozen and dry-roasted with various seasonings (sea salt, wasabi) for snacking right out of
62
the bag. The fresh variety—available during late summer at Asian grocery stores—lasts only a day or two in the refrigerator. Once cooked, the pods can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a few days. Frozen edamame, on the other hand, will keep in the freezer for about a year. To prepare, boil the fresh or frozen pods for about four minutes, drain and immerse in an ice bath to stop the cooking. (You don’t want them to get mushy!) Sprinkle with coarse salt and, if you’d like, other spices such as garlic or cayenne. Or remove the beans from the pods (gently squeeze with your fingers to release them) and incorporate into your favorite dips, salads and stir-fries.
Some folks prefer to steam edamame, which is the way it is prepared in many Asian restaurants—purists argue this method retains more of the nutrients. To steam, place a steamer basket into a large saucepan and fill the pan with about an inch of water, making certain that the water does not touch the basket. Bring the water to a boil and place the frozen edamame in the basket. Cover with a lid and steam until tender, about two minutes. Another option: Edamame can be shelled and roasted (350°F for 30 to 40 minutes) with extra-virgin olive oil, salt and pepper.
Did You Know? Edamame comes from the Japanese words eda (branch or stem) and mame (beans), translating to “beans on a branch” or “stem beans” because the beans were often sold while still attached to the stem. Although edamame has been enjoyed in East Asian countries for more than seven centuries, it didn’t become popular in the United States until the 1980s when a TV miniseries, Shogun, brought about a boom in Japanese food and culture in California, according to the 2009 book History of Edamame, Green Vegetable Soybeans, and Vegetable-Type Soybeans. And the word edamame didn’t appear in the MerriamWebster dictionary until 2008. —Liz Donovan

This Caribbean hideaway is the perfect place to make like a stage star—or a sea turtle. By Rita Guarna
Before St. Vincent and the Grenadines—100 MILES west of Barbados—served as the setting for the swashbuckler film series Pirates of the Caribbean, this island chain with the cumbersome name was known primarily to yachties and seclusion-seeking music and movie stars. But the luxurious, all-inclusive Buccament Bay Resort no doubt will appeal to other Caribbean connoisseurs on the prowl for some under-the-radar fun. And the good times come in several notable flavors. The Harlequin Performing Arts Academy, for example, gives guests the rare opportunity to be coached (yes, it’s included in the price) in voice, acting and dance by world-class professionals. Pros live on site for three-month stints. Recently, Phil Cavill, an actor, vocal coach and West End star—who was asked to audition for and was cast as Jean Valjean in the West End production of Les Misérables, the world’s most successful musical—and Netta Evans, an actress, drama coach and founder of The Windmill Theatre School in London, were helping guests channel their inner divas. The duo had budding protégés first recite silly tonguetwisters (the better to relax them and their vocal cords) such as “the lips, the teeth, the tip of the tongue.” (Go ahead; see if you can repeat it quickly.) This page, from top: St. Vincent is a favorite spot for those seeking seclusion. Volcanic boulders shelter Owia Salt Pond from the swells of the sea, making it a perfect place for snorkeling. Opposite, clockwise from top: Charter a boat and swim with sea turtles at Tobago Cays. A giant Buddha stands guard at Buccament Bay’s spa, ensuring a serene experience. Enjoy a local lager with your sushi at The Bay Beach Club.

If bellowing and breathing exercises aren’t your thing, there’s coaching of another kind thanks to the Pat Cash Tennis Club and Harlequin Soccer Academy, both offering expert tutorials here. For water-sports enthusiasts, there’s snorkeling, kayaking, glass-bottom boat tours and deep-sea fishing, plus diving courses and excursions. The resort also has private-charter access to some of the Grenadines’ most remote beaches (only nine of 32 islands are inhabited), including the uninhabited Tobago Cays, where you can swim with sea turtles. Or enjoy three swimming pools with waiter service, umbrellas and chaises fitted with terry cloth mattress covers that up the pampering ante. (Just when it seems to be getting too hot, ice water and cold towels appear.) Nature lovers will love the trek along the Vermont Nature Trail through a 10,870-acre reserve of lush rain forest with towering ferns, bamboo and tropical flora at the end of the Buccament Valley. Reward yourself afterward with ESPA spa treatments. An array of massages and facials are available in cocoon-like suites, an outdoor pavilion or beachside. Choose between luxury one- and two-bedroom Elaenia Suites or one of the deluxe Beachfront and Garden Villas, which come with private plunge pools, living rooms and expansive bathrooms. Lest guests should have to squeeze out lotions from puny bottles, there are full-size, pump dispensers of moisturizer, body wash, shampoo and conditioner. Canary-yellow beach-cruiser bikes let guests explore (and work off the calories they consume at one of the five restaurants). Don’t care to break a sweat? Golf carts traverse the resort around the clock. Restaurants from Italian to Indian satisfy your gastronomic cravings. Plus there’s a coffee shop and sushi bar for those who prefer grazing. At Jack’s, a classic yet contemporary steakhouse, you’ll dine on delicious local seafood and succulent steaks cooked on a wood-burning grill in the open kitchen. And if you’re an oenophile, you’re in luck. There’s a sensational selection of wines from around the world. Go before the hordes descend. Construction on the brand-new Argyle International Airport is underway, which will make the archipelago easier to visit (now you arrive by boat or fly to Barbados and then connect to a smaller air carrier), and waves of new vacationers will discover its lush shores. But for now, it’s still an offbeat choice, favored by travelers “in the know” and discerning divas, of course.
