Nothing says holiday tradition like homemade Italian struffoli. The whole family gathered around singing holiday songs and rolling fresh struffoli for the holidays. In the Livoti household this has become a tradition for over 50 years. The recipe was passed down generations from there grandparents in Sicily. Start your own family tradition this year with your family and friends with this exciting recipe provided by the Livoti family.

Struffoli

Nonna Livoti’s STRUFFOLI: • 3 cups flour • 2 tablespoons sugar • zest of half a lemon, grated • zest of half an orange, grated • pinch salt • 4 eggs • 2 tablespoons butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder • oil for frying

1. In a mixing bowl mix all ingredients for the struffoli.

HONEY SYRUP: • 1 1/2 cups of honey • ½ cup of sugar • 2 tablespoons water

7. With a draining spoon place them in dishes over a paper towel, also use paper towel between each layer so it will absorb the oil.

DECORATION: Small sprinkle balls Jordan Almonds

Livottis_SP_1215_final.indd 2

2. Work it like a regular dough, not too soft. 3. Take a small golf ball sized piece at a time, with your hands roll it into a long strip adding a little flour to your hands so it makes it easy to roll it. 4. With knife cut in small pieces, roll them into balls, sprinkle a little flour on it and set in trays. 5. In a pot add the frying oil, when hot, start to fry them a portion at a time, whatever the pot holds. 6. Continue stirring the Struffoli until light brown.

8. When all done frying, prepare another pot and melt honey over medium heat. 9. Drop in the “struffoli” , small portions at a time, same as when you fry them. 10. Stir a little, let them flavor in the honey, 11. Platter the struffoli in a pyramid shape and top with sprinkles and Jordan almonds

WELCOME LETTER

A YEAR MARKED BY EXCELLENCE ANOTHER HOLIDAY SEASON IS UPON US, AND at Monmouth Medical Center we have much to celebrate. Monmouth Medical Center offers award-winning medical care, and 2015 was a very productive year that was highlighted by our being among just 17 New Jersey hospitals named to The Joint Commission’s recently published annual list of “Top Per formers” in the U.S. Monmouth has been consistently recognized since the Top Per former on Key Quality Measures® program was introduced in 2011. Recognition of Top Per former hospitals occurs in the fall of each year and coincides with the publication of The Joint Commission’s annual report entitled America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety. Excellent care is something all patients expect and deser ve. Hospitals work hard to achieve Top Per former status—it is not an easy goal to reach; it takes the knowledge, teamwork and dedication of the entire hospital staff. The Joint Commission’s Top Per former on Key Quality Measures® program honors hospitals that demonstrate excellent per formance on evidence-based process of care measures. Also, it is intended to encourage hospitals to consistently improve their per formance on accountability measures by publicly recognizing those that ultimately achieve excellence in this arena. The ultimate goal is to improve the care provided to patients in all aspects addressed by these accountability measures. Additionally, Monmouth Medical Center, which was chosen “the Best of the Best” Hospital in the Asbury Park Press 2015 Readers Choice Awards, has recently been recognized with a number of other quality awards, including recertification through The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification Program for its comprehensive breast cancer treatment and hip/knee/spine programs and for the care of advanced primary stroke, cardiac rehab and acute cardiac syndrome. It is enormously gratifying for me as president and chief executive officer to conclude each year of my administration by celebrating our ongoing success. From the Monmouth family to yours, I wish you the happiest of holiday seasons and the healthiest of new years.

learned there’s no one formula for the perfect present. But it helps if a gift is useful, attractive and distinctive, something the recipient might have chosen but that also expresses you, the giver. In this issue (see page 24) we get you started with four pages of gifts we think are cool. And we made sure we included a wide range of price points—from $15 to $1,500—to suit everyone on your list. There’s much more in our pages to enhance your holiday enjoyment. Check out the no-fuss, party-ready outfits on page 28 and six tasty soup recipes on page 40. Finally, we ask: Can a cocktail taste like apple pie? You’ll find the delicious answer on page 48. Parties are a key feature of this festive season, so it’s fitting that we recall a soirée of our own. Best of Monmouth, our annual food festival and “party of the year,” was held at The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel in Asbury Park. It drew more than 1,500 people, who came out to enjoy the food, drinks and entertainment. Turn to page 64 for photos showing all the fun. Be sure to mark your 2016 calendar for next year’s event on October 13, and cast your digital ballot for the 2016 Best of Monmouth Readers’ Choice Awards. Go to healthandlifemags.com/votemonmouth to show your support for your favorite spots in the county. Of course, the greatest gift—at the holidays or any time—is your own presence in the lives of family and friends. We at Monmouth Health & Life are glad to have been a part of your life for another year of good health and good living, and we wish you a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Mission: Is your home Possible winter-ready? local buzz

It needn’t cost a fortune to prepare your home for Ol’ Man Winter, says Nick Blassmann, a New Jersey–based home improvement expert with Home Depot. “There’s a lot you can do for less than $100 that can save you $300–$400 on heating bills,” he says. These steps can also help you be comfier and more planet-friendly: Plug leaks. Check doors, windows and ducts for drafts. Caulking and sealing leaks is critical. “About 40 percent of heat is lost because of leaks,” says Blassmann. Make sure basement windows have window well covers. And don’t forget electrical outlets on exterior walls. For less than $3 you can buy a pack of covers that will keep air out. Wrap your water heater. Wicked cold affects your water heater, especially if it’s in a shed in your backyard. Put a blanket around it to help it stay warmer and not have to work so hard. Insulate. Brave a trip to the attic to make sure insulation is at least 16 inches thick. Blassmann also advises insulating pipes under sinks. “Don’t let them freeze,” he warns. Leave cabinet doors open occasionally so warm air flows in. Set and forget. Invest in a programmable thermostat, which allows you to set certain temperatures for certain times of the day and days of the week. You can program it to automatically lower the temperature when you’re at work, for example. Change filters. Heater filters should be changed every 30 days, says Blassmann. When they’re dirty they have to work harder, shortening their life span. Clear gutters. Make like Santa and go up on the roof, clearing gutters before torrential rains and blizzards come. “Clogged gutters can cause water and ice to build up, which creates problems,” says our expert. Blassmann says many people are shy about admitting what they don’t know and do things like apply weather stripping incorrectly. “Just ask,” he says. “We will be happy to help.” There are Home Depot stores in Freehold (732.625.3000), Hazlet (732.264.1661), Howell (732.409.9996), Marlboro (732.617.7102), Neptune (732.922.6580) and West Long Branch (732.935.0100).

Ocean Township native Emily Chapman relished her recent victory over celebrity chef Robert Irvine in the final round of competition on the Food Network’s Chopped: Impossible. But the humble 27-year-old, a graduate of Brookdale Community College’s Culinary Education Center, hasn’t let success go to her head. “Being able to bring pride and happiness to my hometown and to my school is what really matters,” she says. “I’m most happy that I didn’t let my supporters down.” Chapman, a sous chef at the hip Charlie Bird in Manhattan, lives in Brooklyn now, but she holds onto her memories of Monmouth County. “I remember riding bikes in the neighborhood with friends, hiking in the woods and exploring, as well as visiting the Tinton Center after school to split a roast beef sub,” she says. Growing up in a close-knit family introduced her to cooking. “Mom was always there to teach us when my sister and I were curious enough to ask,” says Chapman, who started experimenting with recipes around age 15. “Cooking was a part

of our home. My grandmother still cooks; she makes the best shortbread cookies. But my mother is giving her a run for her money with tomato sauce. And my father is the master of the grill.” As for the Monmouth County food scene, Chapman has seen it change over the years. “Fine dining is on the decline, which I’m not sure is necessarily a bad thing,” she says. “I believe that food just needs to be delicious. I don’t care if it’s served on a paper plate or on fine china.” —Sheryl Nance-Nash

The restaurant scene in Red Bank got even hotter in recent months, with the debut of three exciting new eateries. Here’s the scoop. Red has been reimagined as The Belmonte (3 Broad St., 732.741.3232, thebelmontenj.com), a Latin fusion restaurant, bar and lounge serving the same generous drinks as its predecessor alongside an eclectic selection of tapas—think bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with blue cheese and almonds or a crab tostada with chipotle mayonnaise, habanero salsa and mango. Don’t forget the sangria! In the space that once occupied the nightclub Fixx, 10th Avenue Burrito Company (26 W. Front St., 732.383.5664) serves up 18 different types of the signature dish along with wings, flautas, tacos, enchiladas and the like. The menu is pretty big, but it’s eclipsed by the impressive collection of 100-plus tequilas (flights are available too). An added bonus: live music most weekends. No Joe’s is no more, but its reincarnation, Chiky Boom (51 Broad St., 732.291.7340) still brews a great cup of coffee. The Cuban restaurant with a Spanish slant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, whipping up everything from Cuban omelets and breakfast burritos to authentic picadillo and ropa vieja. Tapas are served from 11 a.m. till closing—shrimp ceviche, ham croquettes and meatballs stuffed with blue cheese are just a few of the appetizing options.

WEforum Health & Wellness Conference ADVERTISEMENT

WEforum Appoints 2016 Wellness Ambassadors Monmouth Medical Center, a Barnabas Health facility, recently announced it’s inaugural WEforum, a Women’s Health and Wellness Conference to be held on April 20, 2016 at the Ocean Place Resort and Spa in Long Branch. A female-led organization, WEforum’s mission is to strengthen the health and wellness of communities within New Jersey. WEforum targets women because they’re often the guardians of health maintenance for their families, as well as for themselves. Capsulizing the deeper mission of WEforum is their tagline,

“When you educate a woman, she empowers her family, and together WE can evolve a community.” The day-long conference, designed to provide an opportunity for participants to gain a fuller understanding of caring for their health and that of their family’s through education and early prevention, will include approximately 30 different workshops led by experts with the latest information on specific health and wellness topics. Proceeds from the conference will support free wellness education workshops and programs through Monmouth Medical Center to make vital health care information accessible to the entire community. WEforum is thrilled to announce the 2016 Wellness Ambassadors selected for the inaugural Women’s Health and Wellness Conference. The Wellness Ambassadors draw from an array of health-minded disciplines, but share a common conviction that empowering women with their best mind & body health serves a greater good for their communities. Through their individual passions the Wellness Ambassadors collectively mirror the three touchstones of WEforum: Educate. Empower. Evolve. “The Wellness Ambassadors will represent WEforum and its mission to strengthen the health and wellness of

our communities in New Jersey. This inaugural group was specially selected because they truly embody what it means to lead a healthy lifestyle,” Carolyn C. DeSena, a member of the Board of Trustees for Monmouth Medical Center Foundation and Chair of WEforum, explains. Wellness Ambassador Katy Fraggos echoed Ms. DeSena’s sentiment stating, “Now, with WEforum and the network of inspirational women involved, this positive community can grow exponentially. This kind of collaboration, education, and empowerment is how real change is made on a large scale.” The collaboration of WEforum and the Wellness Ambassadors joining in a collective effort to support Monmouth Medical Center is best summed up by Wellness Ambassador Jen Portman’s business vocation’s namesake, “Synergy - the creation of a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.” Take an important step towards better health by joining WEforum on April 20, 2016 for the Women’s Health and Wellness Conference. Tickets will be going on sale soon. Advance ticket price will be $99. Regular admission will be $125. Event Sponsorships and Vendor participation are available. Shown with the electromagnetic navigation platform used to biopsy lung lesions is the team that leads the new procedure at Monmouth Medical Center: from left, nurse Elaine McKane, clinical director of the Cranmer Surgery Center; respiratory therapist Terri Price; respiratory therapist Lisa Porth, regional director of Respiratory Care Services; anesthesiologist Michael Flashburg, M.D.; and pulmonologist Chandler D. Patton, M.D.

A revolution in

spotting lung cancer Talk about high-stress. Waiting to learn if you have lung cancer can bring some of life’s most difficult moments. But now those moments are fewer, thanks to a new diagnostic technology available at Monmouth Medical Center. “It helps the patient get a quicker diagnosis in a less invasive way,” says Lisa Porth, a respiratory therapist who is regional director of Respiratory Care Services at the medical center. And it can be a relief for a patient and family to receive a prompt, clear answer and move on to the next step—even if that step is surgery. The new technology is an electromagnetic navigation platform with which physicians can take biopsies of nodules in the lung. “It

|

allows the physician to target a tumor directly, where before he or she could only reach its periphery,” says Porth. “The new system shows a tumor’s dimensions in 3-D.” The system is manufactured by St. Louis-based Veran Medical Technologies, a company that specializes in electromagnetic navigation, and it’s called SPiNDrive® 2.0. It meets the newest guidelines for lung cancer diagnosis issued by the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), and Monmouth Medical Center is the first hospital in Monmouth County to acquire it. “There are other navigational bronchoscopy systems out there, and we evaluated them,” says pulmonologist Chandler D. Patton, M.D.,

of the medical center. “We decided this one would be best for our patients. The big advantage of this system is that it allows us to biopsy much smaller lesions than was possible before, which possibly means earlier diagnosis and staging of lung cancer—and hopefully better outcomes.” Early diagnosis of lung cancer can be a lifesaver, says Dr. Patton, who notes that he recently completed a case in which he found a 1-centimeter lesion that turned out to be cancerous. The disease causes more deaths in men and women than colon, breast and prostate cancers combined. If lung cancer is diagnosed at Stage III or IV, the five-year survival rate is only 15 percent. With early detection, however, there is an 88 percent survival rate at 10 years and a 92 percent survival rate with the immediate removal of the lesion. Prior to the recent development of electromagnetic navigation, as now recommended for use in ACCP guidelines, only 16 percent of lung cancer patients have been diagnosed at an early stage, when the cancer was still localized. The new navigational system shows the full dimensions of potentially cancerous lesions. Used in an operating room, it also allows a biopsy to be taken then and there. Laboratory equipment is brought into the room, so that an initial evaluation of the biopsy sample can be performed quickly, even though a full analysis still will be required. In some cases that means that if one biopsy sample is inconclusive, the medical team knows to take another biopsy right away—so that potentially precious time is not lost. Last September 30, Monmouth Medical Center pulmonologist Sharon Weiner, M.D., used the new navigation platform for the first time, assisted by Dr. Patton. The diagnostic procedure is performed in the medical center’s Cranmer Surgery Center, and participating team members include a pulmonologist, a chief pulmonary technician, a respiratory therapist, an operating room nurse, an anesthesiologist and a technician from the laboratory. “Today the tide has turned in our battle against lung cancer,” says Laurie Fenton Ambrose, president and CEO of Lung Cancer Alliance, a national organization that seeks to bring the benefits of responsible screening to those at risk. “We can and will continue to ensure adherence to the proven best practices to guide the screening, diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.” For more information about this new technology, call the Lung Cancer Screening and Lung Nodule Program at 732.923.7966.

Should you be screened for lung cancer?

On December 30, 2013, The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued its final recommendation approving the use of low-dose computed tomography (CT) screening for individuals at high risk for lung cancer. The recommendation set the stage for both public and private insurance coverage, and it’s expected to bring about a dramatic increase in lung cancer survival. The USPSTF’s high-risk populations include current and former smokers, ages 55–80, who have significant cumulative tobacco smoke exposure and have smoked within the last 15 years. Monmouth Medical Center is the first hospital in Monmouth and Ocean counties to be designated by the American College of Radiology (ACR) as a Lung Cancer Screening Center. Screening is handled by the medical center’s Leon Hess Cancer Center. Here are answers to four often-asked questions: 1. Who should be screened? Current and former smokers are at high risk; also, second-hand exposure to tobacco smoke may increase your risk. Talk to your doctor about whether CT screening may be right for you. 2. How is a CT scan different from a chest x-ray? A chest X-ray only shows the front and side views of your chest. A low-dose CT scan shows many crosssectional images from the top of your lungs to the bottom. A CT scan gives doctors a more complete picture of your lungs. 3. What happens during a CT scan? The CT machine is shaped like a big donut. A moving table slides you in and out of it in 20 seconds. During those seconds the machine revolves around you, taking pictures from many angles. No injections or medications are needed. It is a noninvasive procedure, and the amount of radiation used is low. 4. How much will the screening CT cost? If you qualify for the program, you will receive a free low-dose CT scan of the chest. If additional followup tests are needed, they are generally covered by insurance. If you have a lung nodule, you may also be eligible to be followed in our Lung Nodule Program. For more information or to make an appointment, call the Lung Cancer Screening and Lung Nodule Program at 732.923.7966.

Tighten Sagging Skin with New Technologies DR. THEOCHARIDES of Beginnings Aesthetic & Laser Center is at the forefront of ThermiRF®, a groundbreaking nonsurgical technology for tightening loose, sagging skin with radio frequency generated heat that penetrates the layers of the dermis to promote collagen production. The beauty of ThermiRF® is that it can be used on parts of the face and body that once could not be tightened – with zero downtime. The technology is long lasting, has little or no discomfort and the process activates a natural healing response without damaging any tissue. Dr. Theocharides’ center was one of 10 in the country to conduct a now completed study with ThermiVa®, one of the ThermiRF® technology treatments used for vaginal rejuvenation. Women with vaginal looseness, sexual dysfunction, dryness and urinary leakage from birthing or aging experienced extraordinary results with this procedure, and it is now available for patients. Currently, Dr. Theocharides is one of a handful of qualified cosmetic physicians around the country participating in the ThermiSmooth250™ clinical observational study as part of an FDA approval process. Through a series of four short, pain-free treatments, patients typically experience a tightening of the skin and subsequent shrinkage of the treated area. ThermiSmooth250™ also effectively targets leg and buttock cellulite (now FDA cleared) and abdominal fatty deposits to help patients achieve smoother looking skin that gradually tightens over time. For those who have had little success reducing through diet and exercise, ThermiSmooth250™ can be the perfect, non-surgical solution!

Dr. Theocharides, M.D. Dr. Theocharides is a highly accomplished boardcertified cosmetic surgeon with extensive international training in aesthetics. His specialized training includes experience in the following services offered at Beginnings Aesthetic & Laser: • Cellulite— without surgery! • Body contouring • Skin tightening • ThermiVa® Vaginal Rejuvenation • BOTOX® / XEOMIN® • Dermal Fillers • Non-Surgical Facelifts

Worry-Free Expert Cleaning for Your Investments JOE GIARAMITA, Owner of White Dove Cleaners, has a different perspective on today’s clothing trends. “Our customers are well educated on the maintenance of high quality and couture clothing,” says Joe. “But today I do notice more practical high end clothing coming in for service.” He notes that in general, people realize now more than ever the importance of thinking of high end garments as investments. In particular, he has seen an increase in customers bringing in well-known brands of chic, lightweight outerwear and jackets that require a delicate touch when it comes to cleaning. Trending are leather and fur trim and fancy ornamentation needing special attention before cleaning and bright, nontraditional winter colors. White Dove Cleaners, founded in Red Bank in 1996, has grown from modest beginnings to an 8,000-squarefoot state-of-the-art facility in Tinton Falls in addition to the smaller store where Joe’s family business started. White Dove’s expansion is due to word-of-mouth referrals from customers grateful for Joe and his staff ’s professionalism and special attention to detail. White Dove’s customers know that good quality cleaners make a significant difference in the appearance of clothing, and they wouldn’t feel comfortable bringing their garments anywhere else. “ We have customers who have moved out of the area and mail their items to us weekly. . . that’s loyalty “ The number one priority for prospective clients selecting a dry cleaners is shirt laundering. barley visible

Rarely a star on its own, this nutritious, nut-like grain is a great ensemble player. How often do you sit down to enjoy a bowl of barley? Seldom, perhaps. But as a can-do ingredient, this versatile grain— ranked fourth in a recent list of the world’s top cereal crops—is an unsung hero in the modern foodscape. It has a subtle, nut-like flavor, an appealing beady shape and a pasta-like consistency, and it’s surprisingly easy to incorporate into some of your favorite meals. Barley’s a sturdy utility performer that deserves to be in the spotlight.

Germany roughly tied for second place. Among U.S. states, Idaho—famous for potatoes—is also the barley champ. What distinguishes ordinary barley from barley malt, used in making beer and whiskey? Simply put, barley malt is grain that has been soaked and allowed to partially sprout, giving it a slightly sweeter flavor. But the process is anything but simple, and certain carefully

chosen strains of barley are known to be better for malting. BUY/STORE/SERVE The biggest consideration for the barley buyer is whether to choose a hulled or pearl variety. Pearl barley takes less time to cook, but the refining process it goes through means it’s not considered a whole grain. Hulled barley requires a bit more care, but because the bran layer is left intact it has more nutritional value and a deeper flavor. Whichever you choose, keep barley as dry as possible as you store it. Before boiling, give it a quick wash and let it sit in water for a bit. Adding barley to onions, carrots and beef stock in a soup is a great way to enhance texture; also, barley combines well with mushroom in dishes and makes an excellent addition to a kale and nut salad. Finally, in many recipes that call for rice or risotto, barley is an able understudy that can step in and play the part well. —HARRY DOWDEN

POWER UP Many healthy cereal options use barley as their base, and starting your morning with one of them does your heart a favor. The grain’s soluble fiber not only helps with digestion, but also contains beta-glucans that help lower total cholesterol levels by binding with bile acids to help remove those acids from the body. Research also shows that beta-glucans can boost the immune system and help protect against cancer. According to the U.S.D.A., a cup of cooked pearl barley contains 193 calories, just six of them from fat, and furnishes more than onethird of your daily requirement of iron. DID YOU KNOW? This member of the grass family was first grown as a crop more than 10,000 years ago, and there’s evidence of its production in what is now Sudan as early as 5000 B.C. Its sturdiness in cold weather allowed it to be cultivated millennia ago in Tibet, where it is an important crop to this day. Worldwide, more than 100 million tons of barley are produced annually, with Russia the top producer and France and

in this cocktail, the classic american dessert meets the nation’s own true whiskey—deliciously. The creation of New York mixologist Karin Stanley, this combination of apple cider, bourbon and Licor 43 (a citrus and vanilla-tinged Spanish liqueur) is a creamy ode to apple pie a la mode. It’s represented here with lightly whipped brown sugar cream. And it’s almost better than the pie itself. Because, well, bourbon. Ingredients Serving: 1 n 1 ounce bourbon n ½ ounce Licor 43 n 5 ounces fresh apple cider n 4 ounces heavy cream n 1 cube brown sugar n Freshly grated nutmeg directions n Add heavy cream and brown sugar cube to a cocktail shaker. n Add the coil of a Hawthorne strainer and dry shake, without ice, for 10 seconds or more, to aerate but not whip into stiffness. It must be lightened but still pourable. n In a saucepan, heat bourbon, Licor and cider over a low burner until steaming. n Pour into a tempered mug. n Holding a slotted spoon closely over the surface of the drink, pour a finger’s worth of cream through it to float atop the drink. n Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.

Financial Balance

Time to fix the mix?

When the assets in your investment portfolio get out of whack, rebalancing can put them right— and protect your future.

“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” an old saying warns us, and there’s true wisdom there. If your balanced investment portfolio becomes too heavily concentrated in the “basket” of stocks and not enough in bonds—or vice versa—you could be putting your nest egg at greater risk than you intend. Rebalancing can help. It means redistributing funds among asset classes to get you back to your intended “target asset allocation”—the percentages of invested funds placed in categories such as stocks, bonds, money-market funds or cash. Says Ray Tenpenny, a Cranford-based regional sales executive at the online brokerage firm Merrill Edge: “Think of rebalancing as getting your portfolio back to the mix of investments you chose based on your risk tolerance and life priorities.” “Rebalancing helps ensure that you never take on unintended risk when one asset class outperforms another,” says financial planner Robert Taylor, vice president and senior branch manager for Fidelity Investments in Morristown. Suppose that two years ago, planning your investment strategy, you decided to put 60 percent of your funds in stocks and 40 percent in bonds. Then stocks went crazy. Now you find that because of the growth in the shares of stock you own, you have 63 percent of your money in stocks and just 37 percent in bonds. That would be fine if stocks always went up, or if stocks were always a better bet than bonds. But we know those things aren’t true. And if stocks now happen to zoom downward, your 63 percent puts you in greater danger than the old mix—the one you chose—would have. In this case, rebalancing means “you sell a portion of your stocks and buy more bonds to get the portfolio back to your desired level,” explains Robert Johnson, Ph.D., president and CEO of the financial services institution The American College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. “Rebalancing also forces you to buy assets that have

52

|

recently underperformed and sell those that have recently done well. That discipline will provide great returns in the long run.” But before you take this action, be aware of any transaction costs you may have to pay to accomplish such a shift and figure those into your decision. If you rebalance too often, it could cost you more than the adjustments would be worth. Fortunately, some investment firms—especially with retirement accounts—offer free automatic rebalancing at specified intervals. There is also software that triggers a rebalance if a certain degree of change—say, 5 percent up or down—takes place in the percentage share allocated to a certain asset class. Is automatic rebalancing better? “It’s a personal preference,” says David Walters, a portfolio manager with Palisades Hudson Financial Group. “It may be easier, but many investors prefer a more customized approach that you can’t get from software.” How often to rebalance? It’s different for different people. “For the typical investor, in normal market conditions, annual rebalancing is likely very efficient,” says Johnson. “But in highly volatile market conditions it could be that you should rebalance more frequently.” Of course, rebalancing isn’t magic. By reducing your stock holdings from that 63 percent to 60 percent, you could limit your gains if stocks continue upward, warns Jim McCarthy, managing director of Directional Wealth Management in Rockaway. But long-term planning remains your best guide. Says Joshua Austin Scheinker, senior vice president/wealth management for Scheinker Investment Partners of Janney Montgomery Scott in Baltimore: “No one has been able to time markets, but with a disciplined approach you can help reduce your overall portfolio risk—and hopefully enhance returns.”

HIGHLIGHTING BREAST HEALTH AWARENESS

DURING BEST OF MONMOUTH, Monmouth Medical Center’s newest breast surgeon, Dr. Manpreet K. Kohli, answered attendees’ questions about breast health and breast cancer, and staff members from the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center were on hand to book mammogram appointments. One in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. The Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center was established in 1994 to provide patients with clinically excellent and compassionate care in a supportive and comfortable setting that provides the very best in breast cancer detection and treatment. In 2010, the Wilentz Breast Center became the state’s first Certified Quality Comprehensive Breast Center of Excellence. In 2014 and 2015, the Wilentz Center also received the coveted Women’s Choice Award as one of America’s best breast

centers. The Women’s Choice Award helps women and their families by providing recommendations they can trust when making health care choices. Recommendations are the single most important consideration used by women in selecting a hospital or care center, and when women know which breast centers in their area are among America’s best, they can make better decisions and smarter healthcare choices. The Wilentz Breast Center earned the Women’s Choice award by having met the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) standards from the American College of Surgeons. As one of America’s Best Breast Centers, the Wilentz Breast Center also carries the Seal of the American College of Radiologists as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, and scored above-average on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services patient satisfaction measures. PERSONALIZED INFERTILITY TREATMENT

REPRODUCTIVE SCIENCE CENTER was represented at Best of Monmouth by Sheryl Paton, Director of Marketing. The focus was on increasing awareness of the Center’s personalized services in fertility treatment. Reproductive Science Center of NJ opened in 2004 under the direction of Dr. William Ziegler, Medical Director. Dr. Zeigler, Board Certified in Infertility and Reproductive Endocrinology, in practice since 1998, initiated the first egg donor program based in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The medical staff also includes Dr. Jessica S. Mann, Dr. Alan M. Martinez, Scott Kratka, Senior Embryologist, and Hina Ahmed, Physician Assistant. Both Dr. Mann and Dr. Martinez are fluent in Spanish, an added benefit for a diverse population. This professional staff provides specialized services in the treatment of infertility and assures patients that they will not be turned away. The Center also offers “fertility preservation,” notably egg/embryo freezing, allowing women to preserve fertility until ready to start a family.

Because the staff understands the difficult emotional and medical challenges faced by those dealing with infertility, patients are treated compassionately at the Center, beginning with a thorough evaluation through a series of tests. Reproductive Science Center’s entire team supports each patient along the journey to treatment, making each patient feel welcome and cared for. Treatment may include in vitro fertilization, intrauterine insemination, preimplantation genetic testing, drug therapy, fresh and frozen donor eggs, robotic surgery, as well as other state-of-the-art methods. Among the Center’s many awards, Dr. Ziegler and Dr. Mann were recognized as NJ Top Docs in 2013 by New Jersey’s Total Healthcare Resource. Dr. Mann was recognized as Top OB/GYN in 2013 by Consumers’ Research Council of America, and Dr. Ziegler received the Patients’ Choice Award 2011-2013. Reproductive Science Center has three locations, Eatontown, Toms River and Lawrenceville. Evening and weekend hours are available, as are free phone consultations and free second opinions.

Getting fit in

Cancun This pleasure-seekers’ paradise, it turns out, is also a great place to shape up. by rita guarna

Famous as a destination for carousing spring breakers, Cancun may seem an unlikely place to embark on a fitness journey. But that’s just where I went recently to jump-start mine. Located in a beautiful natural setting on the eastern tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, it’s about four hours away by air via flights to Cancun International Airport. The JW Marriott, a quiet 448-room resort just off the busy “hotel zone,” offers a Wellness Beach Retreat package that includes oceanview rooms, a spa treatment, one-day cabana rental and credit toward group fitness classes. I hoped to get some sun, have some fun and get back into a fitness routine. First up: a surefire way to punch up one’s wellness quest—an hour-long boxing class. Truth be told, I was curious, as I’d never done it. But when some friends suggested that I pop two ibuprofens beforehand, well, curiosity turned to fear. (This, of course, says more about my level of fitness than anything else!) Calling the five-person group session “fun” might be a stretch, but there were plenty of giggles amid the panting and sighs. As in many boot-campesque sessions, there were stations, all designed for different benefits— strength, speed, agility, endurance—and we rotated among them. Our instructor, Malcolm, a former national bodybuilding champ and certified fitness pro, offered encouragement amid shouts of “Venga, venga!” (loosely translated as “Faster,

Opposite, clockwise from top left: an ocean-facing cabana at the JW Marriott, the perfect place to relax, retreat from the sun and enjoy complimentary fruit and water throughout the day; an exhilarating speedboat ride through the mangrove channels along the Nichupte Lagoon; a tranquil pool at the luxurious Mayan-inspired spa; tequila tasting (with a sangrita chaser) at the lobby bar; a steaming plate of linguine and shrimp at Gustino.

faster!”) Afterward, we sipped recovery smoothies at the health bar. The barista recommended the Green Juice, made from celery, spinach, orange, cucumber and pineapple. The drink was delicious— refreshing and not too sweet. Feeling proud of myself, I reasoned that I’d earned a retreat to the poolside, oceanfront Bali-style cabana. There you can read, daydream or just indulge in people-watching. For lunch, healthy options abound at BeachWalk, a bathing suit-friendly eatery, with choices such as Thai shrimp spring rolls, Mexican ceviche, crab cakes and my favorite, a blackened grouper sandwich served with grilled onions and mustard seed roulade sauce. Next, for more relaxation, a spa appointment. Every spa on earth promises to help you “relax, refresh, restore and renew.” This one delivers. After the 75-minute Stress Victims Spa Cure, you’ll feel all those “re”s and more. The tension melts away as your back, neck and shoulders are kneaded and massaged for the first 25 minutes. (Ask for Yesica; she has the hands of a goddess.) Once you’re thoroughly relaxed, next up is a 50-minute facial, including a lovely hydrating mist. When I was well rested, it was time for a night on the town. The restaurant Porfirio’s reimagines the best of traditional Mexican fare in a beautiful setting. (Sit outside if you go around sunset.) Prepare for a multi-sensory experience: The food and service are great. Music videos play in the background, making it feel a little Las Vegasesque—but that adds to the fun. Later, a live band roams through the space, serenading patrons with classic Mexican tunes. Want another way to up the fun quotient? Head to Champions Sports Bar. A favorite of locals, tourists and hotel staff, it offers karaoke nightly. It’s located at the CasaMagna Cancun next door to the JW Marriott. (Stay at either hotel and enjoy the amenities of its sister property.) Of course, no wellness weekend would be complete without yoga, which is great for flexibility, stress relief and a host of other health benefits. (Studies show it reduces the risk of heart disease, decreases blood pressure and lowers low-density, or “bad,” cholesterol by more than 10 points.) In a group class geared toward all experience levels, the emphasis was on breathing, balance and being comfortable with your body now. Yoga isn’t your thing? There are daily stretching and spinning classes too. If you can tear yourself away from the gym and the beach, consider the Aquafun Marina Jungle tour, during which you’ll power through the waters of the Nichupte Lagoon in a twoseat speedboat. After an exhilarating ride with a constant cool spray offering a respite from the sun, you can dive into the turquoise water and do some snorkeling. Back by late afternoon, it’s time for drinks. For a refined alternative to the sugary margarita, try tequila tasting at the lobby bar. Locals enjoy tequila with sangrita, a spicy nonalcoholic beverage meant to cleanse the palate between shots, and JW’s mixology team will explain the differences among these low-calorie sips. For dinner, try Gustino, where low-carb linguine with shrimp, grilled veggies and poached salmon are popular, waistline-friendly options. The Branzino al cartoccio con finocchio e sedano, Chilean sea bass with lemons, fennel and leeks, is a delicious—and healthy—choice. Turns out Cancun wasn’t such an unlikely spot for a wellness retreat. After all, true wellness means finding balance, not just physically, but socially, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. And a beautiful beach doesn’t hurt one bit.
