INVESTING IN A HEALTHFUL FUTURE IT IS APPROPRIATE THAT WE ARE SPOTLIGHTING the largest charitable commitment in Monmouth Medical Center’s 130-year history, and one of the largest in the history of RWJBarnabas Health, in the June/July issue of Monmouth Health & Life. The annual Shore Issue focuses on life at the Jersey Shore, and our In Good Health section features the incredibly generous philanthropic investment in Monmouth Medical Center by Anne and Sheldon Vogel, who grew up in Long Branch and whose families were devoted to serving their local Jersey Shore community. The Vogels have deep ties to the city of Long Branch, which remained an integral part of the couple’s life together. Vogel’s Department Store was a fixture in Long Branch for many years, and Anne’s father, Joseph Purcell, served the Long Branch Police Department for more than 34 years, ending his career as the chief of police. The long-time Shore community residents believe in the incredible care that this hospital, our physicians and staff provide. They are devoted benefactors who previously donated $1.5 million to designate the Vogel Geriatric Emergency Department at Monmouth Medical Center. Their incredibly generous new gift will benefit the development of our new state-ofthe-art health campus in Tinton Falls. Anne and Sheldon Vogels’ dedication to our Shore community here in Monmouth County is an inspiration to us all. We are incredibly thankful for this extraordinary gift, which will help ensure that Monmouth Medical Center remains on the cutting edge of technology and a vital resource for the communities we serve.

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT summer—that three-month whirlwind of beach days, weekend getaways and barbecues—that makes me smile. Could it be the deep-rooted reminder of childhood days spent out of school doing nothing more than playing? Or is it simply the brighter days and warmer weather that put me in a good mood? There’s a line in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby that has always resonated: “…I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with summer.” Yes! That’s exactly how I feel. For me, the season is all about being outside, whether I’m spending a day with family at the beach in Belmar or enjoying a 9:17 AM twilight cookout with friends in my backyard. Our Shore Issue is filled with ideas on how you can enjoy your time outdoors, whether you’re on the beach or in the park. In “Shore Things,” you’ll find six pages devoted to ways you can enjoy nature right here in Monmouth County, from beaches and golfing to biking and fishing. Turn to page 42 to see the entire list and choose where you’ll have your next adventure. Not the active type or prefer to entertain at home? Invite family and friends for an afternoon of outdoor dining. But don’t just settle for paper plates—follow some of the decorating tips in “A Breath of Fresh Air” on page 48 to throw a garden party your guests will remember. Of course, June means much more than the start of summer— it’s also the time when we celebrate dads. This month’s For Men Only (page 18) and Jewelry Box (page 24) offer several gift ideas for the man in your life, any of which he’ll appreciate any day of the year. We hope these and all the articles in this issue bring a smile to your face, just like The Weather Channel’s “What Season Are You?” personality quiz I took for fun a couple of years back. The result? Drumroll, please. I’m a “summer”—naturally. Find out which season you are at monmouthhealthandlife.com/season.

A DVERTI S EMENT

Countdown to Retirement

Now What?

W

ELCOME to the latest edition of Fiscal Fitness! It’s time to ponder the next chapter in life—retirement. You’ve worked hard your whole life anticipating the day you could retire. For the 76 million baby boomers living in America, the challenge is managing your assets to give them lasting potential. For women, the road to retirement is even more challenging with the reality of rising health care costs and longer life expectancies. Planning for the uncertainties retirement may bring is more important than ever.

Retirement income planning has changed over the years as we rely more on personal savings. Only 14% of women in or nearing retirement will depend on a pension as their primary source of income and nearly 62% of women today rely on Social Security Benefits to pay for 58% of their expenses1. The fact is, it’s up to you to plan for any shortfall. But how? MAXIMIZE SOCIAL SECURITY The decision on when and how to tap into social security benefits can be complicated, especially if you are divorced. Too often, women take Social Security prior to reaching FRA (full retirement age) without fully understanding the long-term ramifications of their decision. You may qualify for Social Security benefits based on the earnings record of your ex-spouse, even if they have remarried or passed away. For those married, coordinating spousal and retirement benefits can be one of the most important decisions you make as a couple as you plan for retirement. MANAGE HEALTHCARE COSTS Medicare Part B premiums along with any surcharges are one of the most overlooked expenses in retirement. With longer life expectancies, women need to incorporate those rising costs into their retirement projections. For those needing long-term care, Medicare only covers a portion of

skilled nursing costs up to 100 days1 and Medicaid is only available to those with limited assets and income. More on that in my next article! IMPORTANT MEDICARE RULES Medicare is mandatory and in order to collect Social Security benefits, retirees must acquire Medicare when eligible. Failure to do so could mean forfeiting all current, future and past social security benefits. It is also means-tested, meaning the more income you generate in retirement, the more your health care payments will be under Medicare. MINIMIZE TAXES Do you have a clear understanding of how your pensions, annuities and investments are taxed? Many individuals believe they will be in a lower tax bracket during retirement, but that is not always the case. How might these same vehicles affect the taxation of Medicare? Carefully structuring retirement income sources with an eye on which investment vehicles are factored into Medicare premiums can make a big difference in retirement. By planning carefully,

CFP ® investing wisely, and

spending thoughtfully, you can increase the likelihood that your retirement will be a financially comfortable one. Now may be the time to collaborate with a qualified and experienced CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Professional who can guide you in the right direction.

Let BEGINNINGS Bring out a Younger and Happier You... without surgery! BEGINNINGS AESTHETIC & WELLNESS can help you achieve a more beautiful you, inside and out. All with no down time! Thomas Theocharides (Dr. T) of Beginnings Aesthetic & Wellness is often at the forefront of the latest non-surgical cosmetic procedures and technologies. He also guides patients on all levels of well-being from proper nutrition to spirituality because he believes genuine health starts from the inside. “We empower patients with the knowledge to make changes from the inside out,” he says.

Thomas Theocharides, m.d. Dr. Theocharides is a highly accomplished internationally trained cosmetic surgeon and board-certified OB/GYN.

Beginnings Aesthetic & Wellness was among the first to introduce ThermiVa®, a non-surgical procedure improving sexual satisfaction, bladder control and vaginal dryness, all with no down time! Now offering the O-Shot®, or the Orgasm Shot®, intended to help produce stronger, more frequent orgasms. It can also effectively address decreased libido, vaginal dryness, and painful intercourse. With the use of PRP (platelet rich plasma), the O-Shot® can rejuvenate vaginal tissues, especially when used in conjunction with ThermiVa® vaginal treatments. Dr. T introduced PRP to his Long Branch office to enhance the benefits of micro-needling as well as using hyaluronic acid fillers. As we age, the skin loses elasticity and collagen, which can contribute to facial sagging, tired looking skin. The Vampire Facelift® and Vampire Facial® will give your skin a boost CALL TODAY towards smoother, younger-looking skin! Dr. Theocharides explains that dark under-eye circles are often shadows from the loss of volume as we age. “A youthful face has fullness; restoring this can take you back ten years without surgery. With longer-lasting fillers like Sculptra® and Bellafill®, the benefits can last for years.”

YOU CAN GET THERE BY WALKING He took a pill in Ibiza; now he’s taking a stroll across America. Singer-songwriter Mike Posner plans to inspire others to “seize the day” by walking from New Jersey to Venice, California, by Christmas. He began his journey on April 15 right here in Asbury Park. The Grammy nominee will be performing acoustic shows at parks on his journey, and will use social media to keep his fans abreast of his whereabouts. (Posner was in Pennsylvania at presstime; follow his progress at @mikeposner.)

GO GREEN With a nickname of The Garden

State, it’s not a shock that New Jersey is green, but just how green are we? According to a new WalletHub study, which looked at factors such as environmental quality, eco-friendly behaviors and climate change in each state, New Jersey is the 16th greenest state in the U.S. of A. Our Northeast neighbors Vermont and New York snagged the top two spots on the list.

PRAISE FOR A SCHOOL Monmouth is lauded for its amazing public schools, and now the entire state is taking note. Knollwood School in Fair Haven placed third in a recent ranking of New Jersey’s 50 best public elementary and middle schools by the data analysis group Niche. The ranking isn’t a complete picture because the numbers were based primarily on standardized test scores, but it’s still good to be recognized.

MIAMI COMES TO MONMOUTH South Beach at Long Branch, a new oceanfront residential development that spans 1.7 acres, has won two prestigious awards at the Atlantic Builders Convention—for Best Mid-Rise/High-Rise Community and Best Interior Design Merchandising for a High-Rise Community. The kitchens in the two-, three- or four-bedroom residences are inspired by Miami, as are the terraces—each waterfront terrace is equipped with a built-in gas fireplace so you can entertain outdoors year-round, just as they do in Florida. The project will be completed and ready for residents to move in later this year.

FATHER’S DAY FUN

Stumped on what to do for Dad on Father’s Day, June 16? Spend some quality time with him at any of these Monmouth County events, all of which have good ol’ Pops in mind: IF HE’S A KID AT HEART: Dad goes on rides FREE at iPark in Freehold all day on Father’s Day. He also eats free—if a member of his party buys an entrée—and gets a complimentary draft beer. IF HE’S A HISTORY BUFF: Travel back in time to the 1770s at the annual Battle of Monmouth Reenactment at Monmouth Battlefield State Park in Manalapan, taking place both Saturday and Sunday of Father’s Day weekend, starting at 9 a.m. IF HE’S AN OUTDOORSMAN: Trek out to Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold from 2 to 5 p.m. for the annual Freshwater Fishing Derby. Prizes will be awarded to dads (and kids) who catch the longest fish in three different categories. IF HE’S A RACING FAN: Treat Dad to a tasty brunch and place bets on the horses at Monmouth County Race Park in Oceanport. Dads get free admission for the day! There will also be raffles, a Father’s Day ticket drawing and fun activities for the kiddos. MONMOUTH HE ALTH & LIFE

A HORSE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR The Casino Pier carousel in Ocean County’s Seaside Heights is officially closed for business after 87 years—at least until it hopefully finds its new and improved home elsewhere on the boardwalk— but it just may have some competition. A new vintage-style carousel is coming to Pier Village in Long Branch as part of its massive expansion project. This carousel, featuring 43 wooden and hand-carved figurines, will be enclosed with glass, so it can be used year-round. The plan is for the carousel to be ready for riders by summer 2020.

ON A ROLL

Missing your burger fix every time you go to Monmouth Mall now that Bobby Flay’s famed Bobby’s Burger Palace has closed? You won’t be down about it for long, because Shake Shack is taking its place. Mayor Anthony Talerico Jr. confirmed the developer has received approval to build the new restaurant in the Eatontown shopping center, though specific details about when it plans to open haven’t yet been revealed. We can tell you what’s on the menu, though— burgers, hot dogs, fries and what might be the best shake you’ll have ever tasted.

WHEELS FOR NOAH Howell’s Noah Salkowitz got a custom BMW for his birthday—and he’s only 2. The little boy was born with HADDS (hypotonia, ataxia and delayed development syndrome), a rare neurodevelopmental condition. To help him get around more easily, a group of sixth graders in the LEGO League Club at Cove Road School in Hazlet designed a motorized car just for him. The mini-BMW was donated by BMW of Mount Laurel, but the kids, working for six months during recess and after school, made modifications it to fit Noah’s needs, such as a roll bar for extra back support and a horn on the steering wheel. Now little Noah is riding in style!

CULINARY CORNER RENAME THAT RESTAURANT!

Wondering what happened to Whipped Creperie in Red Bank? It’s moved a few doors down and rebranded itself as Cé La Vi, and it now offers not only tasty crepes and croissants but full breakfasts, lunches and dinners (chicken cordon bleu or seafood scampi, anyone?) and a kids’ menu. There’s just one hitch. The new name, a re-spelled version of a familiar French phrase, apparently belongs to a Singaporebased restaurant chain which, though it has no U.S. locations, does have trademark lawyers. The eatery may have to find a new new name, and management welcomes patrons’ suggestions. That’s life! CÉ LA VI—OR WHATEVER, 16 MONMOUTH ST., RED BANK, 732.747.0076

EAT, ENERGIZE, REPEAT

Fresh, healthy food you can grab on the go isn’t always easy to come by. That’s why it’s exciting for Middletown to welcome Freshii, a healthy, fast-casual chain that offers customizable bowls, burritos, salads, wraps, soups, smoothies and juices. The food is designed to keep you energized and full—the place’s motto is “Eat. Energize”—so yummy-yet-healthful options with ingredients like quinoa, brown rice and avocado are plentiful. WELCOME TO

Belmar

YOU’LL FIND SAND, SURF, SUN AND LOTS OF SEAFOOD AT THE “#1 BEACH IN CENTRAL JERSEY.” Despite its small size (just 1.6 square miles) and small population (under 6,000 people total), Belmar has everything that’s quintessential to a Jersey Shore town—a mile-long boardwalk with shops and restaurants, sandy beaches for surfing, swimming and tanning and a stunning marina off the river. But perhaps its small-town charm and endless activity offerings are what make Belmar a popular vacation destination and a favorite place to call home.

SURF’S UP

Belmar is one of the most popular surf spots on the East Coast and hosts the Belmar Pro Surfing Competition every September, where both pro and amateur surfers from around the world convene to compete against each other. Newbies can also learn the ropes at Belmar’s surf camp located at 3rd Avenue Beach. Prefer to play sports on land? There is also an active skate community and skatepark here.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

5,680 n WEBSITE:

BELMAR.COM

Arts and culture are alive and well in this borough, as The Belmar Arts Council puts on art shows, workshops and live performances all year round.

when you think of Belmar is likely its beaches, which are among the cleanest and highest ranked in the state (Belmar was even rated the No. 1 beach in Central Jersey in 2014). Belmar beaches also boast the most playgrounds of any in New Jersey— you’ll find a colorful play area every five blocks, in fact—and some offer family-friendly activities like kayaking, surfing and boogie boarding. There is also a mile-long, handicapped accessible boardwalk running along the shore, which is brand-new; it was rebuilt after the original boardwalk was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.

HOME, SWEET HOME

Thinking about buying or selling a home here? The median home value in Belmar is $579,200, up 5.2 percent over the past year. Home values are expected to increase 3.5 percent within the next year, according to Zillow.

FAMOUS FACES Notable people and celebrities have once called the town home, including David Sancious, Bruce Springsteen’s original keyboardist. Springsteen even named his “E Street Band” after “E Street” in Belmar, where Sancious’ mother lived. (She let the band practice at her home before they hit it big!) Brian Lynch, former basketball star who played for Villanova University and then played and coached professional basketball in Europe, also grew up in Belmar.

DINING OUT Not surprisingly, seafood and fish are abundant in this seaside town; locals love the casual, nautical vibes and yummy eats at Mr. Shrimp and the seafood, sushi and oceanfront views at Klein’s Fish Market. Speaking of oceanfront, indulge in American cuisine at Boathouse Bar & Grill, grab burgers and tacos at 9th Avenue Pier or munch on Italian food classics at La Dolce Vita, all of which offer views of Shark River. Want something… meatier? Jersey Shore BBQ has some of the most savory and delicious ’cue in the area.

DID YOU KNOW? In 2008, Belmar established a legal “Sister City” relationship with Balbriggan, a seaside town near Dublin, Ireland. “Twin towns” foster a sense of belonging and help residents better understand each other’s traditions and cultures.

SEAFOOD BY THE SEASHORE

Belmar is the site of the popular NJ Seafood Festival, an event held annually at the start of the summer where visitors feast on crab cakes, clams, coconut shrimp, scallops, lobster rolls and more crustacean delicacies. As of the 2019 festival, which took place in May, the event relocated to downtown Belmar near Pyanoe Plaza to provide greater exposure to the family-owned businesses located there and better accommodate the large crowds.

STATE OF THE ARTS The marina is located along Shark River, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to being a place to dock a boat or go fishing, the marina is also home to restaurants, a playground, a mini-golf course and tennis courts. You may also recognize this marina from HBO’s The Sopranos, as this was the marina at which Tony Soprano docked his boat—and where the Mob boss held top-secret meetings.

MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER EARNS A SPOT ALONGSIDE TOP-PERFORMING HOSPITALS IN THE COUNTRY.

MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER IS THE only New Jersey hospital to be named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals by IBM Watson Health. The study spotlights the top-performing hospitals in the U.S. based on a balanced scorecard of publicly available clinical, operational and patient satisfaction metrics and data. The Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals study uses independent and objective research to analyze hospital and health

system performance in 10 clinical and operational areas addressing: risk-adjusted inpatient mortality index, risk-adjusted complications index, mean health-careassociated infection index, mean 30-day risk-adjusted mortality rate, mean 30-day risk-adjusted readmission rate, severityadjusted length of stay, mean emergency department throughout, case mix- and wage-adjusted inpatient expense per discharge, adjusted operating profit margin and HCAHPS score (patient rating of overall hospital performance). The analysis has been conducted annually since 1993. “This award is a testament to the commitment of our physicians, nurses and staff to ensure the highest quality, safest patient care,” says Eric Carney, CEO for Monmouth Medical Center, which was recognized in the teaching hospital cat-

egory. “We understand that what matters most to our patients is safe, effective care, and as the head of the hospital, it is very gratifying to be recognized for our commitment to quality by a business unit of IBM that is dedicated to the development and implementation of cognitive and datadriven technologies to advance health.” Based on the results of this year’s study, IBM Watson Health estimates that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the awardwinning facilities: •more than 103,000 additional lives could be saved; •more than 38,000 additional patients could be complication-free; •more than $8.2 billion in inpatient costs could be saved; and •approximately 155,000 fewer discharged patients would be readmitted within 30 days. “At a time when research shows that the U.S. spends nearly twice as much on health care as other high-income countries, yet still has poorer population health outcomes, the 100 Top Hospitals are bucking the trend by delivering consistently better care at a lower cost,” says Ekta Punwani, 100 Top Hospitals program leader at IBM Watson Health. “The hospitals on this list represent the current vanguard in value-based care, and we applaud their commitment to quality.” The winning hospitals were announced in the March 4 edition of Modern Healthcare magazine. A LASTING LEGACY ANNE AND SHELDON VOGEL HAVE GIVEN A MOST GENEROUS GIFT TO MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER. WHEN ASKED ABOUT THEIR MEMORIES of growing up in Long Branch, Anne and Sheldon Vogel often refer to Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) as “Monmouth Memorial Hospital,” where they were born. Sheldon’s uncles were the owners of Vogel’s Department Store on Broadway, where families shopped for everything from appliances to clothes for decades. When Anne recalls her fondest childhood memories, she always includes a story about her father, Police Chief Joseph Purcell, who served Long Branch for more than 30 years. CLEAR PICTURE THE JACQUELINE M. WILENTZ Comprehensive Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center is furthering the fight against breast cancer by introducing advanced 3D breast imaging known as tomosynthesis at its Colts Neck satellite location. Tomosynthesis produces a 3D image of the breast by using several low dose X-rays obtained at different angles. The 3D imaging provides doctors with a clearer view, helping to identify potential abnormalities in the breast, even in dense tissue. Tomosynthesis improves the radiologists’ ability to detect potential breast cancers by eliminating overlapping breast tissue. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival; if detected early, the five-year survival rate is close to 100 percent. With tomosynthesis, the breast is positioned and compressed in the same way as a conventional mammogram, but the X-ray tube moves in a circular arc around the breast. Tomosynthesis takes images from multiple angles and uses computer processing to build these “slices” into a 3D image that a radiologist can manipulate, examining each slice individually. CARE BEYOND

MEDICINE

A CARING COMMUNITY BRINGS GIFTS OF COMFORT AND CHEER TO MMC ONCOLOGY PATIENTS. ALREADY RECEIVING THE BEST MEDICAL CARE, oncology patients at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) also benefit from the support of the community. That support can come in the form of care packages and gifts, which are assembled and prepared especially for patients with cancer. The following are examples of the generosity seen at MMC. RETURNING TO MMC WITH COMFORT IN TOTE Heather Zrebiec, director of Thirty-One Gifts, an organization founded in 2003 that has become one of America’s fastestgrowing direct-selling companies, recently returned to MMC to deliver 200 “comfort” totes to benefit the hospital’s adult and pediatric oncology patients. “Heather hosts fundraisers where a $25 donation purchases a tote from Thirty-One Gifts and then she uses her commissions and stuffs the bags with comfort items for patients,” says MMC oncology social worker Gabrielle Alvarez. “This is the third consecutive year that Heather has hosted this fundraiser for our infusion patients—through her first visit she brought more than 60 comfort bags for our patients, and her latest fundraiser reached 200 totes.” Heather delivered 40 bags for children receiving chemotherapy at the Valerie Fund Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Each bag contained lotion, lip gloss, glow sticks, toys and crafts, a book, a blanket and candy. For adult infusion patients at Vantage Point and the hospital’s infusion unit on BBR4, she brought 160 bags containing items such as blankets, books, Sudoku puzzles, a deck of cards, candy, tissues, hand sanitizer, lotion, a pen and notepad, tea, lip balm and a nail file. They also

Howell resident Shannon Shoenemann recently visited Monmouth Medical Center’s Outpatient Infusion Center and donated two bags of cozy knotted fleece blankets. Shannon volunteers for Jill’s Blankets, a nonprofit based out of Virginia that began in 2014 in memory of Jill Ward, who underwent chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer. Jill was given a fleece blanket during her treatment and decided to pay it forward. She began making fleece blankets to hand out to other patients during her treatment. After Jill passed in 2013, Jill’s Blankets was created to continue her legacy of giving to others. To date, Jill’s Blankets has donated more than 2,300 blankets to infusion centers. GIVING PATIENTS A ‘CINDERELLA’ MOMENT Operation Bling is an innovative program designed to bring cheer to patients along their cancer journey, one piece of jewelry at a time. MMC introduced Operation Bling in 2014 to provide gifts of jewelry commemorating treatment milestones for oncology patients. For every piece of jewelry sold, a gift of “bling” is given to a cancer patient at Monmouth Medical Center. Currently, Operation Bling works with 11 hospitals in New Jersey, including Monmouth Medical Center, and has gifted items to more than 18,000 cancer patients. There are “bling angels” at each hospital to facilitate the “blinging” process. These angels are nurses, social workers and patient navigators who volunteer their time to help. “When I explain the program to our patients, there’s almost a disbelief that someone gives them a beautiful piece of jewelry,” says Alvarez. “It’s like every patient is a kid in a candy shop.” Patients may be approached at any point in their treatment. Often after completion of their treatment, MMC oncology social workers or navigators surprise them with several cases of jewelry and accessory options to congratulate them. Women may choose from myriad rings, earrings, pendants and bracelets; men select from watches, key rings and money clips. “The more patients that we bling the better,” Alvarez explains. “They are just so overwhelmed when presented with bling, as choosing is such a pleasurable decision for them.” To learn more, visit operationblingfoundation.org.

IN GOOD HEALTH

BACK IN ACTION

A CROSSFIT ENTHUSIAST RETURNS TO HIS ACTIVE LIFESTYLE AFTER KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY. TWENTY YEARS AGO, BILLY HARMER was sledding with his kids in Vermont when he lost control and slammed into a parked car. The impact fractured his left tibial plateau, the top of the leg bone that creates the knee joint. He had that injury surgically repaired and needed three more operations over the next two decades to remove torn cartilage caused by his incredibly active lifestyle that included halfmarathons and Tough Mudders, mountain climbing and a variety of sports. He also was a regular at CrossFit competitions. By last fall, though, there was no cartilage left to prevent the bones in his knees from rubbing together. The pain and swelling caused by arthritis and bone-on-bone contact became too much for him to bear. “In October, I said, ‘I can’t do this anymore,’” says Harmer, 55, of Wall Township. “My right leg was compensating, and my back was thrown out of whack.” His orthopedic surgeon, Christopher Spagnuola, M.D., recommended total knee replacement. “I was fully on board. I said, ‘Let’s do it,’” recalls Harmer, a facilities manager of Boutique and Outlet Services at LVMH Watch & Jewelry USA in Springfield. Dr. Spagnuola performed the surgery at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) in November. It was a bit more complicated than other knee replacements, he says, because of Harmer’s previous surgeries. “I had to remove the screws from the earlier surgery, and there was some tough scar tissue to get through,” he says. But the surgery was a success. “The goal is for him to get back to being active, not just decrease pain,” Dr. Spagnuola says. “His lifestyle was altered, and we wanted to return him to his natural state.”

Wall resident Billy Harmer returned to his active lifestyle, lifting weights and playing certain sports, following total knee replacement surgery performed at Monmouth Medical Center.

Christopher Spagnuola, M.D.

Treatment at MMC was top-notch, Harmer says. “From preregistration to the end, the staff at Monmouth Medical Center took care of me. I didn’t want for anything. And their in-house therapy was aggressive, which I loved.” Harmer admits that the recovery was challenging. “It was definitely painful. They push you more than they did when I had my first surgery 20 years earlier. I was walking a few hours after surgery,” he says. But as an athlete he knew that “you get out of it what you put into it.” Sometimes, in fact, he put too much into it. “Some days, my physical therapist said I had to scale it back, take a couple days off and recover. He said, ‘This is a year-long recovery. You can’t do it in two months.’” Harmer was back to work by midFebruary, and he re-enrolled in CrossFit later

that month. He says he is about 80 percent fully recovered. “I do physical work, and I am more sore at the end of the day,” he says. There is still some slight pain, which he tolerates, “knowing it will go away in few months.” But he also realizes that some of his previous activities may be behind him. “We want to get him as close to what he was doing before as possible,” Dr. Spagnuola says. “Running—he might not be able to do that.” Anything with jumping or quick cutting, like basketball, is also out. He can, however, play doubles tennis, lift weights, bicycle and even compete in modified CrossFit events. “That’s fine,” Harmer says. “You make adjustments.”

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE DINING ALFRESCO IN THE SUMMER. WITH BRIGHT COLORS AND WHIMSICAL DETAILS, YOUR NEXT GARDEN PARTY WILL BE THE HIT OF THE SEASON. Few things beat the romance of a table along the waterfront or the mountainside, but alfresco dining with family and friends in your own backyard can be just as memorable. While pretty paper plates are great in a pinch, with just a little planning you can elevate any casual meal and turn it into a backyard banquet. Opposite page: Achieve a festive vibe by repeating one or two colors or elements throughout the tablescape. Flowers in various shades of pink and rustic animal-themed décor, for example, are design elements that are sure to make your guests smile.

3 HIKES YOU’LL LIKE

EVEN WILDERNESS NOVICES CAN ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS IF THEY CHOOSE THE RIGHT TREK. TRY THIS TRIO! By DARIA MEOLI

The joys of the outdoors aren’t just for hardcore survivalists and rugged veteran campers. Even city slickers can appreciate nature’s majestic scenery and serenity by meandering down a hiking trail. So if your travel plans this summer take you anywhere near Maine, Michigan or Georgia, think about packing some hiking boots and adding to your itinerary one of these three very special trails with inspiring vistas or if you are staying close to home, consider a day trek at one of the local parks mentioned on page 45. You’ll be taking the advice of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who counseled: “Never lose an opportunity to see something beautiful.”

CADILLAC MOUNTAIN SUMMIT LOOP

Bar Harbor, Maine Difficulty: Easy to Moderate Looking to immerse yourself in quintessential New England wilderness—but stay close enough to town to be back for Happy Hour? A visit to Maine’s Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is sure to please. The mountain’s summit is the highest peak within 25 miles of the North Atlantic seaboard and has one of the earliest sunrises in the U.S., making this a popular pre-dawn adventure. On clear days, you can see Mount Katahdin to the north and Nova Scotia to the east as well as views of Acadia’s forests, glacial lakes and harbors and the Porcupine Islands. There are dozens of hiking trails to choose from to reach the summit, encompassing a variety of difficulty levels—the easiest being the paved Cadillac Mountain Summit Loop. This route is both kid- and dog-friendly, and there is a gift shop that also sells refreshments, with restrooms and water fountains at the summit. For those looking for more of a challenge, the 7.5-mile South Ridge Trail winds through blooming fields of wildflowers, forested patches and exposed granite walls with a perfect spot for a respite at picturesque Featherbed pond.

MACKINAC ISLAND OUTER LOOP

Mackinac Island, Michigan Difficulty: Easy to Moderate Located in Lake Huron at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac lies an island known for dramatic limestone bluffs, coastal charm and a quaint village that time seems to have forgotten. Because cars and trucks are strictly prohibited anywhere in Mackinac, technically the entire island can be considered a hike. With 82 miles of dedicated parkland and 70 miles of trails, there are many routes to choose from; however, some are more popular with cyclists and horseback riders. The Outer Loop is one of the best ways to soak in all the natural splendor of this Midwestern oasis while on foot. This family-friendly trek is long—8 miles—but the terrain is undemanding, and it will take you around the perimeter of the island with views of beaches, crystal-blue lake waters, picturesque harbors and Arch Rock, the iconic 50-foot-wide natural limestone arch that rises 145 feet above Lake Huron. More serious hikers will want to check out Tranquil Bluff Trail, Mackinac’s longest and most challenging trail. It is a bit rugged and steep and gets close to the cliff’s edge, but the reward is an amazing view of the lake far below. Along the way you can break off the trail into the surrounding forest and find points of interest including Eagle Point Cave.

PROVIDENCE CANYON TRAILS

Lumpkin, Georgia Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult Who knew there was a “Little Grand Canyon” in the Southeast? Located about 150 miles southwest of Atlanta, Providence Canyon is a 1,103-acre outdoor recreation area that encompasses 16 canyons. On the hike you’ll see waves of sculpted sandstone canyons and cliffs in a spectrum of rock colors—red, white, purple, pink and orange—as well as vibrant patches of evergreen forest. If you’re lucky, you’ll come across the orange-to-red plumleaf azalea, said to be the rarest azalea in the Eastern United States. It grows exclusively in this region and blooms in July and August, long after most azaleas have lost their luster. There are several trails to choose from, based on your experience level—from the 2.5-mile canyon loop trail that gives a nice, leisurely taste of the formations to a 7-mile loop that offers more options for hiking and camping as well as access to the canyon floor.

FLAVIO’S WARM CHICKEN AND PESTO SALAD Yields: 4 servings INGREDIENTS n 8 boneless chicken thighs, skin on n 4 ¼ oz. mozzarella n 16 cherry tomatoes, halved n s alt and freshly ground black pepper TO MAKE THE PESTO: n 4 ½ oz. pine nuts n 2 oz. basil leaves and stalks n 2 Tbs. Parmesan, finely grated n 1 small garlic clove, peeled n 8 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil FOR THE SALAD: n 7 oz. spinach leaves n 1 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil

DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 350°F. Put the pine nuts on a baking tray and roast for a few minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and tip onto a plate to cool. Peel the skin from the chicken thighs and set aside. Season the thighs lightly with salt and pepper and stretch each one out onto a baking tray. Stretch out the pieces of skin onto an oven rack, scatter with a little salt and cook just above the chicken thighs in the oven for about 25 minutes—the fat from the skin will drip onto the thigh meat below. The skin will shrink and become golden and crispy, and the chicken thighs should be cooked through in about the same time, but remove one or the other if one is ready before. Meanwhile, to make the pesto, whizz all the ingredients together in a small food processor or use a pestle and mortar. Season to taste and set aside. When the chicken is cooked, remove the rack with the skin and set aside. Remove the tray with the chicken thighs and spoon over the pesto, using about 1 Tbs. per thigh. Tear the mozzarella into thumb-sized pieces and lay on top of the pesto. Scatter the tomato halves around the chicken and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until the cheese begins to brown. To make the salad, toss the spinach with the oil and a pinch of salt and pepper, and divide between four bowls or plates. Lay the chicken onto the spinach with the tomatoes, crumble the chicken crackling over the top and serve.

BUTTER CHICKEN Yields: 4 servings INGREDIENTS n 8 chicken thighs, skin on and bone in n 1 tsp. salt plus more to taste n 2 tsp. chili powder n 2 Tbs. lemon juice n 4 fat garlic cloves, grated n 1 Tbs. fresh ginger, peeled and grated n 2 Tbs. ghee, butter or coconut oil (optional) n 2 onions, finely chopped n 1-2 small green or red chilies, split in half, to taste n 2 tsp. ground cumin n 1 tsp. ground turmeric n 1 tsp. ground coriander n 4 Tbs. butter n 14 oz. can of plum tomatoes, chopped n a few coriander leaves

DIRECTIONS Put the chicken thighs into a bowl and scatter over 1 tsp. of salt, the chili powder, lemon juice and half the garlic and ginger. Mix thoroughly and set aside to infuse for 15 minutes. Put the chicken thighs skin-side down into a large frying pan over a medium heat. When golden brown turn to the other side and repeat—it will take about 20 minutes to do this. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside while you make the sauce. Add the ghee to the pan (unless there is enough chicken fat) and fry the onion with a little salt until softened, about 10 minutes. Add the remaining garlic, ginger and chilies and fry for a couple of minutes. Stir in the remaining spices and cook for another couple of minutes. Add the butter and tomatoes and fill the can halfway with water and swirl it around. Add this to the pan and cook for 15 minutes or until the tomatoes are soft, stirring frequently. Add the thighs to the pan and continue to cook, covered with a lid, for 45 minutes or until they are cooked through and the meat falls easily from the bones. Season to taste. Add the coriander and serve right away.

CHICKEN TAGLIATA Yields: 4 servings INGREDIENTS n 4 boneless chicken breasts, skinned n 1 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil n 7 oz. rocket leaves or watercress n 2 Tbs. Parmesan or Grana Padano, in shavings n s alt and freshly ground black pepper FOR THE DRESSING: n 8 -inch sprig of rosemary, leaves picked n ½ fresh red chili, to taste n 1 small garlic clove n 3 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil n 1 Tbs. balsamic vinegar

DIRECTIONS Preheat the grill to high. Prepare the dressing by finely chopping the rosemary, chili and garlic together on a board with some salt and a good twist of pepper. Mix in a bowl with the oil and vinegar. Set aside. Open out the chicken breasts by cutting them threequarters of the way through with a sharp knife along one long side. Butterfly them by opening them out like wings and flatten under a piece of cling film with a meat tenderizer or base of a small pan. The chicken should be an even thickness to ensure the same cooking time all over. Season the chicken breasts and rub a little oil over each one. Grill the breasts until they are cooked through—this will take about 4 minutes each side if the breasts are ¾ of an inch thick. If you have a meat thermometer, check that the chicken is 176°F inside, or cut into the deepest part with a sharp knife to check that the juices run clear and are not pink. Arrange the rocket leaves and Parmesan shavings on a plate or large wooden chopping board. When the chicken is cooked, slice it into strips and transfer to the serving plate. Drizzle the dressing over and serve immediately.

POWER FOOD

Papaya’s Paradise

THIS SIZABLE BERRY PACKS A TROPICAL PUNCH THAT’S EQUAL PARTS DELICIOUS AND NUTRITIOUS.

IT MAY BE JUST BEGINNING TO WARM UP here in New Jersey, but thanks to the yearround import of this tropical delight, a culinary escape to paradise is as accessible as your local grocery store. Papayas, found in the produce department of most markets, are recognizable as green or yellow oblong melon-like mounds. Native to Mexico and Central America, this fruit—it’s classified as a berry— is also grown in parts of the U.S., including Hawaii (this variety, though, is smaller than the Mexican papaya). Don’t be intimidated by its size or puddle of seeds that await when you cut into it—its sweet tropical taste is just the start of its benefits (and you can even enjoy those seeds on the side).

with an allergy may experience a reaction if they consume or use the fruit this way. BUY/STORE/SERVE When buying, pay attention to color and feel. A papaya should be firm and streaked yellow, CSPI recommends. Storing it at room temperature for two to three days will allow the fruit to ripen. It’s ready to eat when the fruit feels soft and has turned a yellow-orange hue. Once the fruit is ripe, it should be refrigerated and eaten within a day. To eat, cut the papaya in half, take out the seeds and rinse and reserve

them if you plan to use them separately. Serve the fruit whirred into a tropical smoothie alongside other warm-weather fruits, such as avocados, bananas and mangoes; chopped into a salsa to add a hint of sweetness; sliced in a salad or with yogurt; or simply on its own. Martha Stewart suggests roasting it with brown sugar, and on its webpage, the Hawaiian Papaya Industry Association offers a recipe for an impressive papaya bowl stuffed with chicken salad. —Liz Donovan

POWER UP Papayas are the fourth most nutritious fruit— after guava, watermelon and kiwi, respectively—according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization. The group ranked fruits based on calorie count (one cup of papaya has 60) and levels of various nutrients. The papaya earned high marks for its rich content of vitamin C (88 mg, 98 percent DV), which boosts the immune system, potassium (360 mg, 7.5 percent DV), folate, (53 micrograms, 13 percent DV) and fiber (2.5 grams, 9 percent DV). It’s also rich in beta-carotenoid, an antioxidant that converts into eye-protecting vitamin A and gives the fruit the reddish color you’ll see when you slice it open. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Nutrition found papayas to be a better source of this antioxidant than tomatoes and carrots, vegetables often associated as leaders in promoting eye health. There are topical benefits, as well. Papayas contain an enzyme called papain, which helps with digestion. It also makes papaya effective as a meat tenderizer or even a skin exfoliant. (Note: Because of this, papaya is a popular ingredient in beauty products, but speak to a doctor or dermatologist before crafting your own face mask.) A word to the wise: Raw and semi-ripe papaya contains latex, so people

RESTAURANT REVIEW

TRIUMPH BREWING COMPANY

GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT, and I’m not just talking about showing up at a trendy Jersey Shore restaurant without a reservation. Food and drink enthusiasts stood by for years in anticipation of Triumph Brewing Company’s debut in Red Bank, watching since 2014 as the establishment’s owners and local land use boards got caught in a red-tape tug o’ war. So it came as no surprise that there was much fanfare when the doors finally opened late last year, giving diners their first taste of the elevated tavern fare and craft brews. My friend and I made the trip to Triumph on a busy Saturday. We were ushered past a large collection of communal tables that filled an expansive front dining area, where, we presumed, customers gather for more casual dinners and drinks. Intimate and quieter dining—as well as special events—takes place in a back room where we sat. We hung out without menus longer than one might expect at a place that oozes hip and chic, but we picked out our drinks rather quickly: a Bluecoat blondie (Triumph’s Belgian Blonde beer, Bluecoat gin, syrup and orange juice) for me, cucumber Moscow mule (cucumber vodka, syrup, ginger beer, lime juice and cucumber) for her. Both drinks were too strong for our liking, and the ginger beer in my friend’s cocktail left a powerful biting aftertaste that, after every sip, made her reach for water. Everything about our appetizers, on the other hand, was palatable. The nutty consistency of the six fried falafel was the perfect start, especially when each piece picked up the flavors of the accompanying Romesco sauce and crème fraîche. We shared a small bowl of Mulligatawny, which was made with an autumn-esque (yet delicious any time of year) blend of butternut squash, chickpeas, coconut milk and curry. But it was the mushroom toast that took the top spot, a hearty combo of cream, wild mushrooms, shallots and thyme atop crispy French bread. Our three choices made me want to try other apps like lump crab salad, bacon tart and chicken posole. But instead of a table topped with starters, we selected two entrées from an inventive menu that included jazzed-up banh mi and spicy chicken sandwiches and locally sourced chicken and steak dishes. Hoping for something lighter, I ordered a perfectly charred and generously sized Arctic char filet. The fish is served skin side up, but I flipped it upon serving to reveal the wonderful salmon color. Flavorful on its own, the char got a little boost when forked with some of the lentil ragout and creamed leeks, the same creaminess that topped the mushroom toast. My friend, who was full after the appetizers, had the wheat berry salad, a large bowl with fresh squash, baby greens, red onions, dried cranberries and splashes of maple vinaigrette. She quickly regretted adding grilled chicken to the order, as the protein was heavily salted and peppered and overpowered the otherwise refreshing bites of salad. Triumph doesn’t have a lengthy dessert list, but each option—from the bread pudding to the warm apple upside down cake (which we devoured)—was as tempting as the next. In fact, I can say the same for the upscale menu as a whole, despite the missteps during my visit. The food here goes beyond pub grub, and with its inventive craft brews, Triumph fits nicely in Red Bank’s rich dining scene. —Darius Amos Triumph Brewing Company, 1 Bridge Ave., Red Bank, 732.852.7300, triumphbrewing.com
