Monmouth Medical Center

Best in the U.S. for the 12th time in a row

{ WELCOME LETTER }

Your Comfort And Care Are Our Priorities With “Home and Garden” as the theme of this issue of Monmouth Health & Life, we are once again reminded how much our homes and backyards have become our sanctuaries over the last year. For patients undergoing complex cancer treatment regimens, the comfort of home is more important than ever. Advances in treatments have given hope to those fighting even the most aggressive cancers, but these treatments also are growing increasingly complex, involving lengthy outpatient infusions and/or radiation therapies, and additional visits for supportive care. Studies show that the benefits of receiving cancer care close to home extend beyond the obvious quality-of-life advantages, and we understand that the road to recovery is easier when less traveled. Monmouth Medical Center offers community-based, academic-level specialized cancer care close to home, so our patients can focus on treatment and recovery without the stress of traveling far for care. And by joining forces with a renowned National Cancer Institutedesignated center such as Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, we are expanding access to state-of-the-art oncology care. The state’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center—a competitive designation awarded to only 48 centers nationwide—Rutgers Cancer Institute provides our patients with convenient access to the state’s resource for and leader in cancer research. Our Leon Hess Cancer Center is the only facility in Monmouth and Ocean counties to be designated as an Academic Comprehensive Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. This designation provides assurance to our patients that they are receiving the highest-level of comprehensive care, including access to a full range of state-of-the art services and a multidisciplinary approach to the best treatment options. In this issue, you can meet our newest oncology physicians and read how Monmouth Medical Center is boosting survival rates by using an evidence-based approach for medical and surgical procedures—including cutting-edge options for women’s cancers. If you would like to learn more about our advanced oncology programs and services, please visit mmccancer.com

Through the concerted effort of Monmouth Medical Center’s physicians, nurses, staff, volunteers and leadership, patients and families benefit from receiving the highest level of quality care and the safest hospital experience. { EDITOR’S NOTE }

Your Sanctuary, Indoors And Out How can you get excited about home, you may ask, when you’ve recently been “stuck” there for many months? The Home & Garden Issue you hold in your hands is our answer. That bit of the cosmos you control—your house and its surroundings— has been a special kind of refuge for the past year, but it’s always your sanctuary in a hustle-bustle world. In a way, our environments speak back to us. Your ability to craft yours to meet your needs isn’t just a chance for self-expression; it’s an affirmative embrace of your family’s daily life—self-esteem with a paintbrush. Home is where you can always go; let it be because you love the place. In that spirit, Monmouth Health & Life tells you the story of a Holmdel family who had the perfect opportunity to make their newly built house “their” home. Though personalizing a blank space is typically easier than redoing existing work, sometimes a project needs a little help. So, the family called on Yelena Gerts of Holmdel’s House of Style & Design for an assist. Turn to “Kids Put Luxury to the Test” on page 30 to see how Gerts gave the family precisely what they wanted. Besides showcasing this wonderful space, this issue features other articles that can inspire you to create an area to fit your lifestyle. The home office ideas on page 36 and the kitchen trends in Local Buzz, for instance, are chock full of tips to get you started. There’s our usual range of topics too. Did you know, for instance, that hemp is packed with protein and heart-friendly omega-3 fatty acids (page 68)? Or that a little splash of color can add a large amount of cheer and excitement to your spring wardrobe (page 40)? You’ll find all of that and more in this Home & Garden Issue; we invite you to flip its pages and see what catches your eye. Perhaps it will even inspire a fresh look at what you’ve supposedly been seeing constantly. Welcome home!

A DVERTI S EMENT

Taxes and Retirement W

ELCOME to the latest editions of Fiscal Fitness! Spring is finally in the air at the Jersey Shore with warmer weather quickly approaching. It has been a full year since the market bottom and the start of the official lockdown, but what a difference a year can make. The market has done a complete 180 reversal with equity indices near or hitting record highs1. Unfortunately, far too many investors pulled out of the markets during the pandemic, never fully participating in the recovery. Many at or near retirement are wondering what to do next.

carefully and consider how the new rules affect inheritances and taxes, especially for high value IRAs. Strategies that include trusts as beneficiaries also need to be reviewed. The new rules make Roth IRAs more attractive and depending on your tax situation, a Roth Conversion could make sense. The beneficiary of a Roth IRA, which generally provides tax-free distributions, may want to leave the account intact for up to 10 years, allowing it to benefit from tax-free growth for as long as possible.

THE SECURE ACT ushered in many changes in the way we save for retirement and could have a dramatic impact on IRA estate strategies. IRAs and 401ks are often one of the easiest ways to build a large nest egg for your retirement as well as an opportunity to leave a legacy for loved ones. A provision of the Secure Act eliminated the “stretch IRA”, a strategy allowing an IRA to continue benefiting from tax-deferred growth, potentially for decades. Unfortunately, most non-spouse beneficiaries, including children and grandchildren, can no longer “stretch” distributions over their lifetimes.

TO ROTH OR NOT TO ROTH Now may be the time to consider contributing to a Roth IRA as contributions are tax free when withdrawn and earnings are tax free if the distribution is “qualified”3. Many employers now offer a Roth 401(k) option allowing you to make after-tax contributions that are not subject to income limitations. This is a great opportunity for high income earners and should not be overlooked. Other strategies to consider include converting a traditional IRA to Roth, referred to as a Roth Conversion4. NOTE: Roth IRAs are not subject to RMDs (required minimum distributions) during the lifetime of the owner.

THE NEW RULES For retirement assets inherited January 1, 2020 and later, non-spouse beneficiaries are required to deplete inherited accounts within 10 years of the owner’s death.2 If, for example, my son inherits my IRA, he has 10 years to deplete the entire account upon my passing. Not only would this shortened distribution period result in unanticipated and potentially large tax bills, would I really want him to spend down his inheritance that I worked so hard to accumulate? Note: Key exceptions apply to those who are known as “eligible designated beneficiaries”. Spousal beneficiaries can wait until age 72 to begin RMDs. Retirement account owners should review their beneficiary designations

1 As of March 24, 2021, 2 Exceptions apply; 3Roth IRA subject to income limitations; Roth IRA beneficiaries can withdraw contributions tax- free at any time. The 5- year rule applies if Roth IRA less than 5 years old; taxes due on any earnings withdrawn. 4 Traditional IRA account owners have considerations to make before performing a Roth IRA conversion. These primarily include income tax consequences on the converted amount in the year of conversion, withdrawal limitations from a Roth IRA, and income limitations for future contributions to a Roth IRA. In addition, if you are required to take a required minimum distribution (RMD) in the year you convert, you must do so before converting to a Roth IRA.

TREAT MOM ON HER DAY

OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTIES.

Breakfast in bed is always a hit, but spilled coffee and burnt pancakes aren’t—so why take the risk? This Mother’s Day, treat the lady in your life to a special brunch at one of many restaurants in Monmouth County. Our local eateries are open and are following all safety guidelines (and the meals are expertly prepared), so a midday meal with Mom will go exactly as you planned—and will be exactly what she deserves. These five places go out of their way to make every mom feel special:

WHAT’S COOKING WITH KITCHENS Before you tear down cabinets and put a sledgehammer to the wall, you should know that upgrading a kitchen takes plenty of thought and planning. Colors or neutrals? Traditional or “smart” appliances? Monmouth Health & Life asked Valerie Sayler, showroom manager at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery in nearby Lakewood, for some insider info on the latest in kitchen design. Experiment with color. White is still the it choice for kitchens, but a number of homeowners are adding accent colors. “Many are going the two-tone route with their cabinets, often installing white upper cabinetry with colored bottom cabinetry,” Sayler says. “The most popular colors we’re seeing right now are navy blue, hunter green and gray.” She adds that accent lights in bright colors or those with natural elements like rattan or crystal are also trending. Smarter kitchens. Many vendors are syncing their appliances with smartphone apps, with ovens—used so often during the quarantine—leading the way. “And to extend the life of appliances, many manufacturers are including technology that alerts homeowners when it is time for routine maintenance or when there is a potential problem,” Sayler notes. “And some appliances can communicate directly with the manufacturer to help diagnose performance issues,” which can spare a costly visit from a repair person. Water…from above. Another growing trend is a suspended faucet in lieu of countertop- or wall-mounted fixtures. “Why not free up some space and install a ceilingmount faucet?” says Sayler. “A suspended faucet can be adjusted to any preferred ceiling and hanging height. It’s a great option for those homeowners looking for a sleek, modern and smart kitchen faucet.” See it in person. While consumers may shop for items such as faucets online, Sayler recommends that many customers visit a showroom first. “Online shopping may be a good option for small items or to replace a similar item, but when purchasing large items online, such as an appliance or new bathtub, many consumers don’t purchase all of the additional parts needed to complete the installation,” she says. “They may not know what they are missing until it’s too late and, in the end, they spend more money and time correcting problems.”

CHEER UP, IT’S NO CAT-ASTROPHE! Nearly a year since COVID temporarily shut the doors of Asbury Park’s famed cat café, the owners of Catsbury Park have decided to close their small Cookman Avenue storefront for good. No more gluten-free baked goods there, no more steaming hot lattes, no more quality cuddle time with the homeless kitties. But there’s good news: The nonprofit hasn’t gone out of business, and it’ll continue its mission of helping find adoptive families for felines in need and providing trap-neuter-release (TNR) services for the local feral cat community. “The reality is we have not had a storefront or café for 12 months now and, in that time, we have been able to increase our rescue efforts,” says café founder D.J. Bornschein. “Not having the burden of supporting a sizable rental space in downtown Asbury over the next couple of months will only help us save more cats and plan for the future.” If you’ve successfully read into that, you’ve figured out that the Catsbury team will eventually reopen a new café. Where and when still remains to be seen. Meanwhile, you can view all the cats available for adoption on Catsbury’s Facebook and Instagram @catsburypark.

CULINARY CORNER LET THEM EAT CAKE (AND SANDWICHES)! Baked-goods fans were sent reeling when the Flaky Tart closed last fall, but if you haven’t visited that spot in Atlantic Highlands recently, you’ve been missing out. The former Tart’s owner, Laura Martelli, opened Flour on First at the same location, specializing in seasonal, custom and classic cakes. (You can’t go wrong with a good oldfashioned chocolate or red velvet cake.) But there’s more: Flour has a lunch menu with seasonal salads, soups, sandwiches and savory tarts. • Flour on First, 145 First Ave., Atlantic Highlands, 732.366.9622; flouronfirst.com

THE SHORE MEETS MEDITERRANEAN Pizza and ice cream are perfect for the boardwalk, but you’ll be hungry for something more after a few hours under the sun. A short walk from the Long Branch beach is Anstuna Grill, which serves healthy and filling Mediterranean dishes, from hummus and baba ganoush to falafel and grilled kebabs. Now that’s food to be shore to sample! • Anstuna Grill, 75A Brighton Ave., Long Branch, 732.820.6750; anstunagrill.com

PIES TO TRY The folks whose Brooklyn pizzeria Via Roma earned high marks from the popular blog site Barstool Sports are now giving Monmouth residents a piece of the pizza pie. Via Roma of Marlboro is anything but plain and simple; it offers all the usual suspects in terms of pizza but also makes specials like a burrata pie and a half pizza, half calzone pie as well as a variety of Italian apps and entrées. Barstool may grade eateries after “one bite,” but we’re certain you’ll be taking many more chomps out of Via Roma’s food. • Via Roma, 12 Rte. 9, Morganville, 732.970.3991; viaromaofmarlboro.com

Most Cinco de Mayo bashes were put on hold a year ago—something about a worldwide quarantine got in the way. But things are a little different in 2021, and we’re ready to safely enjoy the big fiesta on May 5. With many restaurants now reopened and following recommended guidelines, it’s time to celebrate with a margarita and a few tacos. Here are five great Mexican eateries that feature tasty food and drinks as well as a lively vibe that many of us have missed.

A BOOST FOR LOCAL BIZ As the pandemic reached its height last year, Kim Masi watched as the retirement gift to herself, Confections of a Rock$tar bakery, started to drift away. With the quarantine in effect, foot traffic was nonexistent—as was the cash flow—and the business was reeling. But Masi’s bakery wasn’t the only one hit hard; hundreds of businesses nationwide felt the economic impact of COVID, sending an immediate S.O.S. to the public. While the government threw a few grants to small businesses, a major crowdfunding effort led by Dave Portnoy, a blogger who founded the pop-culture site Barstool Sports, gained traction. Dubbed the Barstool Fund, the campaign collects donations from the public and awards a sum to small businesses that meet eligibility requirements. (More than $50,000 in lost profits, for example, is one qualifying bar.) To date, the Barstool Fund has raised $36 million from nearly 220,000 donors—and helped 315 businesses. At presstime, Confections is one of three Monmouth establishments (Mia Restaurant in Oceanport and Marandola’s in Bradley Beach are the others) to receive Barstool’s financial assistance. “It’s such a good feeling to know that there are so many people out there who just want to help people,” Masi says.

GOODBYE TO A RULE? The state is considering ending a longtime requirement for how a customer must consume alcohol at a brewery or distillery. No, the legal drinking age isn’t changing. Instead, the state is deciding on a bill that would eliminate the need to tour a brewery or distillery before one drinks on site. “Requiring customers to take a tour every time they frequent their favorite brewery is very redundant,” says state Assemblywoman Pam Lampitt. Legislators have discussed similar bills in the past but have never passed a decisive one. A potential vote, however, has gained traction as a result of the impact of the coronavirus. Eliminating tours would relieve a burden felt by many breweries in Monmouth, many of which suffered during the pandemic. Stay tuned.

PUPPY LOVE Dog: Chance, 3-yearold pug Owner: Aja and Marc Nelson, of Eatontown When a Lancaster, Penn., family learned that their 3-year-old pug wasn’t showdog material, they put the pooch up for adoption. It was pure luck that the Nelsons were looking for a good boy to bring home. Now Chance is relishing his second chance. Like any good “retired” pup, he now spends his time along the Shore, with summer days at the Sandy Hook beach, swimming and sunbathing. “He loves going for walks to Joe Palaia Park in Ocean,” owner Aja adds. But Chance isn’t all about the beach life—he and his “brother,” Valentino the cat, like to get into mischievous situations together and play with their large toy collection. “They have hundreds of stuffed animals to play with, but Sheldon the sheep is Chance’s favorite,” Aja says. Middletown resident Kathleen Malouf, who works in Pediatric Medical Stay for MMC’s Unterberg Children’s Hospital, is the inventor of the IsoPouch, a simple, disposable, transparent pouch that adheres to an isolation gown. The pouch can help health workers quickly and easily gather supplies and preserve personal protective equipment (PPE). She joins Jennifer Stinson, nurse scientist from The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, to be recognized among hundreds of applicants worldwide for innovative ideas aiming to improve COVID-19 patient care. The Johnson & Johnson Nurses Innovate QuickFire Challenge series invites the millions of nurses worldwide to submit ideas for new devices, health technologies, protocols or treatment approaches. In 2020, the sixth challenge launched focused on innovations in COVID-19 patient care. Inspired by the innovative nurse-led solutions that emerged from the NurseHack4Health virtual nurse hackathon in May 2020, this Challenge invited nurses from around the world to share their novel ideas aimed at improving patient care during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. In announcing the challenge, Johnson & Johnson Innovation noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has raised new patient care challenges for nurses and health workers and brought into focus the obstacles that they face around the world, every day. “COVID-19 has brought forth many new healthcare challenges, and it was inspiring to see nurses once again applying innovative thinking with the aim to create potential solutions to improve and transform healthcare,” says Lynda Benton, senior director, Corporate Equity at the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies. “We were thrilled to collaborate with the American Organization of Nursing Leadership (AONL) and the Society of Nurse Scientists, Innovators, Entrepreneurs & Leaders (SONSIEL) in a QuickFire Challenge that could both spotlight and support the ingenuity of nurses on the front line that we’ve seen throughout this pandemic.” Diann Johnston, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Regional Chief Nursing Officer, said that together with Johnson & Johnson Innovation, AONL and SONSIEL, Monmouth Medical Center is proud to share the announcement of Malouf’s award. “In January 2020, we became Magnet designated by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and among the criteria for our Magnet Recognition is that our nurses must be recognized for their contributions to the hospital,” she says. “Our results in this area were among those recognized as ‘exemplars,’ and this new

innovation by Kathleen is an incredible example of how our nurses continue to shine.” Malouf notes that the idea for her invention came from a desire to support delivery of more efficient and safe patient care—a need that she said escalated significantly while caring for COVID-19 patients. “Back in April 2020, I was redeployed from my job in Pediatric Medical Day Stay to be a nurse extender in our new COVID-19 intensive care unit,” she says. “I was accustomed to using my scrub pockets to hold everything I would need when caring for my pediatric patients, but when I shifted to caring for COVID-19 patients and wearing layers of PPE, my pockets became inaccessible and I found myself unable to hold all of the supplies I needed when visiting a patient’s room. Because of this, there would be forgotten supplies or supplies that either a team member or I would drop on the floor and therefore waste—and sometimes we had to open doors to shout for assistance with a forgotten item.” Noting that this was not an ideal situation when she and her colleagues needed to minimize moving in and out of patient care rooms and preserve PPE, she realized they needed a simple, efficient, safe way to access medical supplies needed for patient care when they could no longer rely on safely accessing their pockets. “I noticed a lot of my fellow nurses were having the same problem and began to think about a solution, and realized what we needed was a pocket for our isolation gowns—almost like a fanny pack—that could help store supplies, stick on and come off easily with our isolation gowns, and wouldn’t interfere with our PPE—that led me to create the IsoPouch, which is short for Isolation Pouch,” she says. The IsoPouch fits into and supports a nurses’ natural workflow in caring for COVID-19 patients, enabling nurses to use the pouch to gather the supplies they will need before entering a patient care room. It allows them to don their PPE and stick the pouch to the gown, and, when finished, just doff the pouch with the gown. “It’s a simple solution, but it has the potential to help nurses and other frontline health workers provide more sanitary and efficient care, especially in high-stress environments like ICUs,” she adds. Being recognized as a nurse innovator has been incredibly meaningful, according to Malouf, who notes that she is looking forward to the mentorship and the funding to help her further develop her prototypes of the IsoPouch, begin manufacturing, explore different sizes and materials and pursue a patent. “For the longest time, I’ve been keeping a

list on my phone of ideas that could help improve patient care or our daily workflow, and when I heard about this Johnson & Johnson Nurses Innovate QuickFire Challenge from our Magnet Program Director, I thought it would be a great opportunity,” she says. “It means so much to be recognized for one of my ideas, and I’m really looking forward to the mentorship and the funding to help me further develop my prototypes of the IsoPouch, begin manufacturing, explore different sizes and materials and pursue a patent. “Nurses are not conditioned to be thought of as innovators, but nurses are in the trenches of healthcare every day, so our insights are vital in innovation,” she adds. “We are constantly adapting, growing, changing, learning and overcoming obstacles, and I would encourage nurses with great ideas to take a leap of faith and come forward with your ideas and products, because just by believing in yourself, you can change healthcare. It’s within your power.”

Kathleen Malouf’s IsoPouch helps health workers easily gather supplies and preserve personal protective equipment.

Cancer statistics can be scary: The American Cancer Society anticipates more than 56,000 new cases in New Jersey this year, including 8,300 incidence of breast cancer in females. But as chilling as those numbers sound, hospitals like Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) are boosting survival rates by using an evidencebased approach for medical and surgical procedures—including cutting-edge options for women’s cancers. While environment and genetics can increase risk, the reality is that all women can develop cancers such as breast, cervical, ovarian and uterine. For that reason, MMC doctors advise screening as early as possible. “Women in the 35-to-50-year-old age group have a unique opportunity to positively impact their future health through choices made today,” says Trishala Meghal, M.D., an MMC oncologist and hematologist who specializes in breast and gynecologic cancers. “These choices include following preventive healthcare habits like routine screening mammograms and pap smears, which can detect cancers in early—and often the easiest-to-treat—stages.” TREATING BREAST CANCER Screening mammograms and years of improved treatments have been vital to the progress in increasing breast cancer survival rates. The Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center at MMC has been at the forefront in patient care—it offers digital and tomosynthesis mammograms, MRI, ultrasound, bone-density testing, breast-specific gamma imaging, genetic counseling, breast surgery and stereotactic breast biopsy and more stateof-the-art procedures. Most women should get a screening mammogram starting at age 40, with annual mammograms beginning earlier for women at a higher risk of breast cancer. Patients who are at increased risk of breast cancer are screened at intervals based on their risk. “It has been known as the place to come when you want to be cared for in a thorough and compassionate way,” says Manpreet K. Kohli, M.D., the hospital’s director of breast surgery and cancer liaison physician with the Commission on Cancer. The Wilentz Center’s approach to compassionate care begins at screening and is shared across a multidisciplinary team that includes breast radiologists who perform biopsies, a team of pathologists, fellowship-trained breast surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, plastic surgeons, nurse navigators, genetic counselors, nutritionists, social workers and research nurses, notes Dr. Meghal. “Our goal is to provide cutting-edge, advanced treatments in a compassionate and supportive environment,” Dr. Meghal says. “We use tools to measure anxiety and distress in patients recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Our social workers assess not only our patients’

mental well-being, but also help connect them with support groups. Along with others in the team, they are our patients’ cheerleaders throughout this journey.” Alexander King, M.D., regional director of Breast Radiology, which encompasses MMC as well as Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood and Community Medical Center in Toms River, notes that the center truly gives patients the attention they deserve. The hospital recently welcomed dedicated breast imagers Jessica Kondraciuk, M.D., and Dina Morgan, D.O., who Dr. King says “are radiologists who are dedicated breast imagers, meaning they are trained in identifying and diagnosing breast cancer.” Once breast cancer is diagnosed, the team and the patient will determine the best course of treatment together. Gene expression profiling of the breast tumors with the use of Oncotype “has better allowed us to spare more women of chemotherapy,” Dr. Meghal says. But for patients needing chemo, treatment is administered by specialized infusion nurses. Radiation therapy is led by oncologists Sang E. Sim, M.D., and Mitchell Weiss, M.D., both of whom have mastered innovative techniques like prone breast radiotherapy and the deep inspiration breath hold. Other options available at MMC include immunotherapy and antibody drug conjugates. According to Dr. Meghal, immunotherapy takes advantage of the person’s own immune system to help kill cancer cells. On the other hand, antibody drug conjugates are a new class of drugs which combine highly potent cytotoxic therapy with monoclonal antibodies specific to particular cancer antigens. “It spares the normal cells of the toxicity to a certain extent,” she says. These therapies are currently used in setting of triple negative breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body and HER2 positive breast cancers. When surgery is required, the breast surgery team uses the latest technologies, such as Magseed, which allows flexible and precise tumor localization during surgery. The Magtrace technique is a non-radioactive method to determine if the cancer has spread and “allows us to achieve the highest standard in breast cancer staging.” “This enables the medical oncologists to better treat and prevent recurrence of breast cancer,” Dr. Meghal says. “With the recent addition of fellowship-trained breast surgeon Dr. Stephanie Ng joining Dr. Kohli, patients are able to obtain prompt surgical consultations to ensure the most expeditious care.” TREATING GYNECOLOGICAL CANCERS The Leon Hess Cancer Center’s Gynecologic

Oncology Program is dedicated to addressing the individual needs of each patient and focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian, uterine, cervical, endometrial and vulvar cancers, among others. Gynecologic oncologists lead monthly tumor board meetings to discuss cases and review treatment options, and they work with physicians in radiation oncology, gynecology and medical oncology to coordinate each patient’s care. As part of the Gynecologic Oncology Program, Dr. Meghal works with Blerina Salman, M.D., who recently joined the multidisciplinary team and MMC’s chief of gynecologic oncology, Thomas Hackett, D.O. “We are very honored to have one of the best gynecological oncologic surgeons, Dr. Hackett, and Dr. Salman on the team,” Dr. Meghal says. “Together, they have expertise in minimally invasive surgeries and robotic surgeries for uterine, cervical and ovarian cancers.” Like breast cancer, the decline in the incidence of cervical cancer has been largely attributed to screening programs such as pap smear and HPV vaccination. Pap smears are recommended every three years starting

at 21 years of age, and the frequency may range from every three to five years, depending on the type of test performed. Women at increased risk for ovarian cancer may be eligible for screening with transvaginal ultrasound, adds Dr. Meghal, who prior to her oncology training was a practicing OB/GYN. “To study tumors, oncologists use Next-Generation Sequencing to capture a large amount of genomic information to provide molecular rationale for appropriate targeted therapy,” she says. “This technique is routinely available and used by our medical oncologists at MMC.” While chemotherapy is unable to discriminate between malignant and non-malignant cells, targeted therapy directly targets cancer specific mutations and can also inhibit growth of blood vessels that supply the tumors. “Targeted therapies are often associated with more favorable patient outcomes, given they are significantly less likely to result in off-target side effects,” she says, noting that one type of targeted therapy—PARP inhibitors—has revolutionized the treatment of ovarian and breast cancers.

There are lots of things parents put off when they have young children, but sophisticated home style doesn’t have to be one of them. That was the view of parents Nilam and Kal as they contemplated the design of their freshly built contemporary colonial in Holmdel. “We did not want to compromise the décor of our house,” says Nilam, mother of two boys ages 3 and 5. She reasoned that children could be taught not to be tough on furniture, and it’s opened the door to their dream design. “They really wanted to create a luxurious environment they could enjoy every single day,” says their designer, Yelena Gerts, owner of Holmdel’s House of Style & Design. “They wanted to feel like they were in a luxury hotel,” she says, but in a place that was “warm and inviting at the same time.” The result is what Gerts likes to call “everyday luxury.” The design is contemporary with just a pinch of traditional; it’s elegant but still gets the job done on a family occasion, such as a pre-COVID birthday party for the couple’s younger son. No cookie-cutter approach would do for this family. Nilam wanted her new home to stand

out as unique in an elegant way. She found Gerts not only talented, but easy to work with on this vision. Much of what makes the home luxurious was created just for them through Gerts’ efforts. Nilam’s favorite spot is the grand room, where a rustic brick fireplace was replaced with white quartz ascending some 20 feet to the coffered ceiling. “In the morning when the sun hits the fireplace, it just shimmers,” she says. “My whole mantel sparkles everywhere.” Sheer draperies maximize the light she treasures. The starburst painting above the mantel is not only an eye-catcher; it also ties in with two similar patterns in the room (one of Gerts’ secrets to design harmony). Look also for the starburst in the crystal chandelier and the mirror wrapped with antique bronze (Hint: It’s over the marble console table on vintage-bronze legs.) “Because the space was really big and spacious, we needed to make it cozier, so we added molding and painted contrasting colors—various shades of gray—to bring in some dimension,” Gerts says. The coffered ceilings presented yet another opportunity to contrast with grays.

This page, left: Layers of antique brass encircle a mirror in a dramatic starburst pattern, while below a marble console table sits on vintage bronze legs. Both are examples of the mixed metals designer Yelena Gerts embraced for warmth in the grand room, which the family employs for TV and togetherness. Right: Acrylic, pictured here in the base of these custom benches, is a contemporary feature in evidence throughout the décor. Opposite page: Shades of gray find a lively partner in the maroon accent chairs and pillows—ideal because they can be switched up if the family tires of the hue. The starburst art over the white quartz fireplace adds a wow factor echoed in the crystal chandelier. Gerts used contrasting shades in the coffered ceiling and molding to make the spacious room cozier.

There’s plenty of seating for when the gang’s all here, from the acrylic benches perched in front of the exotic wood entertainment center to the pale gray sofa trimmed with brass nailheads. The maroon in the pillows and accent chairs by a mirrored side table was inspired by the deep color of the lotus, one of Nilam’s favorite flowers. It provides a striking contrast to the room’s neutral palette, while the soft area rug introduces a subtle pattern. To warm up the space, Gerts deftly incorporated a mix of metals, such as polished gold with the marble coffee table. Gerts describes the formal living room as “soft and luxurious. It has a lot of texture, and at the same time it’s very European.” The curved silver velvet sectional teams up with a glasstopped coffee table that lets the beauty of the hand-knotted, wool-and-silk rug show through. Another standout piece, the mirrored credenza, is topped with roses in the artwork above. The chandelier reflects the shimmer of the textured walls, and the velvet drapes with crystal finials have a jewelry effect, she says. Are you getting the vibe of a Parisian hotel lobby?

The formal dining room is also dressed up with velvet drapes, complete with handmade trim. The custom table in dark brown oak is just the right size for a family that loves to entertain. The crystal in the dual chandeliers is mirrored in the array of candle holders grouped together as a centerpiece. Again, Gerts warms up the room with touches of gold, as seen in the base of the acrylic sculptures atop the serving console with curved acrylic legs. Also curved are the dining chairs upholstered in a luxurious, light gray velvet. An abstract painting with a floating gold frame above the serving console delivers another touch of sparkle. Even the tray ceiling commands attention with its silver leaf wallpaper for “a wow factor from top to bottom in the room,” she says. Was all this attention to detail worth the effort? When relatives gathered for Thanksgiving before COVID, they were “blown away” by the design, says Nilam, proving her point that elegant style has its place in a busy family’s daily life. No one, apparently, was too awed to enjoy the feast.

This page, left: In the formal dining room, gold-based acrylic sculptures top the serving console with acrylic legs. The abstract painting above is also framed in gold. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but gold is design’s treasure for its warmthinfusing power. This page, right: With a dining room table this size, one centerpiece would hardly do the job. Here Gerts uses a row of candle holders, in crystal like the dual chandeliers, to provide the right dimension and balance. Opposite page: Perfect for a family that’s passionate about get-togethers, this dining room table of dark brown oak is paired with curved chairs in light gray velvet. The velvet drapes with handmade trim dress it up even more. Similar curves can be found in the grand room accent chairs and the formal living room’s sectional. “Using those elements provides a nice flow from one room to another,” Gerts explains.

{ DESIGNERS’ TIPS }

MAKE WORK-AT-HOME WORK Your home office should be a place that fosters creativity— and streamlines your 9-5 routine. The pandemic won’t last forever, but it’s hard to see home offices going away. Working from home, at least sometimes, is too convenient an option for many of us (and for employers who prefer not to invest in office suites). We all live a good portion of our lives online now, and that will still be true even when theaters are filled again and the daily commute resumes. The upshot? You’ll probably go on needing a setup at home for business—even if it’s only the business of being you. That’s a challenge if you’ve been making do with temporary this and jerry-rigged that in lieu of a real home work space. But a home office can be efficient, attractive and conducive to getting things done without eating your house alive. To prove the point, here’s some advice for five home-office scenarios from members of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.

{ DESIGNERS’ { HOME OFFICE TIPS} }

Clockwise from left: Designer Sharon Sherman separates a work area from the rest of the room using a rug, chair and table to demarcate the transition zone; designer Susan Barbieri says a desk built into a closet can be concealed when not in use; a C-shaped table can easily slide under a desk or sofa.

A bedroom in disguise? To maximize productivity in an office-bedroom setup, it’s essential to separate your work environment from personal space. Susan Barbieri of Susan Barbieri Interior Design in Hawthorne suggests a freestanding bookshelf, which can double as a room divider, or a foldaway Murphy bed. “When put away, it makes the work area seem like a dedicated space rather than a combined one,” she says. Sharon L. Sherman of Wyckoff-based Thyme & Place Design advises regular video conference participants to consider their backgrounds. “A virtual background is one option,” she says. “Otherwise, you’ll need to set up an actual background that doesn’t show the bed. A cozy corner with good lighting, books, wall hangings or plants behind you projects an air of calm and professionalism.” Share and share alike. If other family members are also working (or learning) remotely, each person should have his or her own space. No, setting up cubicles isn’t necessary—simply ensure that everyone has a comfortable chair and a portion of the room designated for his or her own computer and work area. Sandra Lambert of Realm Designs in Middlesex also advises minimizing noise, a major cause of distraction. Positioning desks

so that they face a wall or away from each other or installing a white noise machine to mask keyboard clicking and paper shuffling can help, she says. Headsets are another solution, according to Pat Valentine Ziv of PVZ Design in Mountainside, because “they provide a quieter way to communicate with others while not disturbing your office-mate.” No desk? While working on a desk is ideal, keep in mind any flat surface can do the trick, counsels Judy L. Miller, who runs an eponymous design firm in Fair Lawn. A folding table or a vanity can easily double as a work surface, she says, adding: “Above all, you need a comfortable place to sit, so consider the ergonomics of the chair you choose.” Joan Ravasy of Joan Ravasy Design in Lebanon says wall-mounted shelves tucked into corners, hallways, landings and foyers are her “go-to” when creating a dedicated area. Meanwhile, Terri Fiori of Wyckoffbased Fiori Interior Design recommends C-shaped end tables because they can slide easily under a chair or a bed. “Some of them serve a dual purpose, with a shelf feature or a flip-top extension,” she adds. Space is tight. When your computer and files take up all the surface area, it’s time to get creative. “In any small space, I always look

MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

MON.0321.homeoffice.indd 38

38

to vertical solutions,” says Cozette Brown of Cozette Brown Interior Design in Ringwood. “Tall chests, bookcases, even an old armoire can all be repurposed for office use.” Lambert recommends installing cabinets and shelving below work surfaces. “Don’t forget about the backs of doors,” she says. “They can have hooks, folder holders or tack boards.” Keeping order is “critical” in a small office, Ravasy adds. She suggests putting work items in stacked boxes or in a small shelf unit with labeled bins and covered containers to be pulled out when necessary. These tools “allow you to put your work away at the end of the day,” Ravasy says. Work in style. Because the home office is part of your home, be sure it fits in with the style of the house. “The most efficient way to make a home office both functional and sophisticated is by utilizing built-ins,” says designer Alma Russo of AR Interiors in Morganville. Creating built-ins for her clients allows them to address all their needs in the space, “whether it be file cabinets, hidden printers or any other user-specific storage.” And don’t settle for sterile white walls— that’s for the actual office. “Add elements such as strong saturated color and wallpaper to enhance any work-from-home space,” Russo advises.

MONMOUTH

2021 MONMOUTH COUNTY IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST SEASONED AND TALENTED REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS IN THE COUNTRY. To help readers find the best agents to work with, Monmouth Health & Life contracted DataJoe Research of Boulder, Colorado to facilitate a multi-faceted research campaign. It consisted of an online survey delivered directly to agents across Monmouth County via email as well as internet research. In the survey, real estate agents were asked to provide sales volume ranges and also nominate their peers. In the Internet campaign, DataJoe consulted a variety of websites to build richer knowledge of individual licensed real estate agents across the county. DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at the time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If they were not able to find evidence of a real estate agent’s current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that real estate agent was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied results to Monmouth Health & Life for final review. We recognize that there are many good real estate agents who are not shown on the representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the county.

{ POWER FOOD }

Hemp Makes A Comeback Foods derived from this ancient crop, rich with health benefits, are enjoying a new surge of popularity.

Can you guess what once disreputable plant has floated onto America’s mainstream culinary scene? It’s cannabis sativa, source of the drugs marijuana and hashish. The plant also produces hemp, which is used for both fiber and food. Hemp is far from new—its history goes back 10,000 years, making it one of civilization’s oldest cultivated crops; farmers grew it in our nation’s earliest days. But the cannabis plant’s use for illegal substances caused the federal government to ban its cultivation in 1970. That prescription was reversed with the 2018 farm bill, which made it legal to cultivate plants that contained no more than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound in marijuana that creates an inebriating effect. Since then, hemp food products, as well as items with the hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) oil, have become available at most major supermarkets. Even New Jersey native Martha Stewart has embraced the trend, introducing CBD-infused gummy bears and other products made with 100 percent U.S.-grown hemp to her eponymous line last fall. So no, eating hemp—or CBD products—won’t get you stoned or even lead to a positive drug test, but experts are high on this ancient plant’s many health benefits. POWER UP Like most nuts and seeds, hemp seeds are rich in protein and healthy fats. One ounce, or a little less than three tablespoons, of shelled hemp seeds (also

system and muscles. It also contains 3.2 milligrams of zinc (21 percent DV), also needed for immune health, and 2.7 milligrams of blood-building iron (or 15 percent DV). CBD oil, which has likewise been gaining popularity, is being studied as a treatment for varied conditions ranging from anxiety to post-traumatic stress disorder, and is widely considered an antioxidant.

called hemp hearts) contains about 160 calories, roughly the same as an ounce of peanut butter. Those few spoonfuls bring 10 grams of protein and 12.6 grams of fat. Most of the fat is polyunsaturated, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, both of which are beneficial to cardiac health and, according to the American Heart Association, can lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. That three-tablespoon serving of hemp hearts has about a gram of fiber, but if you want to boost those digestive benefits, eat a similar-sized serving of seeds with the shells intact for a whopping nine grams of fiber. Hemp seeds are also rich in minerals. A serving will deliver 179 milligrams (or 45 percent of the daily recommended amount) of magnesium, which supports the body’s nervous system, immune

BUY/STORE/SERVE Hemp is sold as full seeds, hulled hearts, protein powder, a dairy milk alternative and a cold-pressed oil. The unshelled seeds are best when toasted and go well on salads or in soups. The hearts, which look a bit like couscous and have a subtle nutty flavor, go well over yogurt or mixed with granola, cereal or oatmeal. Martha Stewart suggests coating a peeled banana with a nut butter of your choice and rolling it in hemp hearts for a proteinpacked, sweet snack. The milk and protein powder both add a health boost to a fruit or veggie smoothie. The oil retains its nutrients best when not heated, so it’s not ideal for cooking if you are hoping to reap the full benefits. Instead, drizzle it over greens for a hearthealthy salad dressing. Note: If you are hoping to grow your own hemp, it’s still not legal in New Jersey without a license. Hemp seeds, however, have a long shelf life, staying fresh for several months in a dry pantry or up to a year in the fridge. —Liz Donovan

DID YOU KNOW? You’re likely carrying pictures of hemp farmers in your purse or pocket—that is, if you have a quarter (George Washington) or a nickel (Thomas Jefferson). MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

The Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown receives helping hands from even the youngest community members. For her bat mitzvah community service project, SPCA friend Madeleine donated two bags of homemade puppy rope toys and catnip-infused kitten toys. Meanwhile, 2-year-old Amy held a fundraiser for her birthday and collected dozens of supplies for the animal shelter. 5 Madeleine prepares to donate her puppy and kitten toys. 6 Amy sits with her donations before sending them to the SPCA.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County, with facilities in Asbury Park and Red Bank, recently received a $5,000 grant from Dick’s Sporting Goods. Through its Sports Matter campaign, the national sporting goods store and its Freehold location donated the money to fund the nonprofit organization’s Triple Play comprehensive health and wellness program.

Stewart says he’s fortunate to have trained with the best butchers in the business, “I learned from the old timers, like my dad, who knew their meat.”

{ A MONMOUTH MOMENT }

“After a long, cold winter, I took this photo of my 2-year-old son Auggie enjoying one of the first warm days at Seawatch Beach in Manasquan. We were feeling nostalgic—this is where my husband and I had met and worked back in high school. Seeing life come full circle is a pretty amazing thing.”

WE CAN'T WAIT TO TREAT YOU LIKE FAMILY IN OUR PRACTICE.

As board-certified oral surgeons, Drs. Michael DiPietro, John P. Soliman and Daniel Winston have created a center of excellence in all areas of maxillofacial surgery with a particular focus on dental implants, dentoalveolar surgery, pathology, trauma and anesthesia. Driven by a determination to give patients their maximum effort every day, the doctors spend as much time as needed with each patient. “We offer options and answer all questions to make sure people are comfortable and knowledgeable prior to treatment,” says Dr. Soliman. The practice is built on exceptional care and patient comfort using digital dentistry for excellent results. By combining cutting-edge technology, medical imaging and virtual surgical planning including the All-On-4® procedure, 3-D intraoral scanning and 3-D printing, the doctors remove the guesswork, personalize each surgery and enhance outcomes. The practice is affiliated with Jersey Shore University Medical Center and has built a large, cohesive staff well versed and certified in all techniques and sedation procedures. The doctors and their loyal, dedicated staff take an active role in community outreach by supporting local charities and the Monmouth and Ocean County schools. The doctors also dedicate time to teaching at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center’s residency program.
