ELCOME to the latest editions of Fiscal Fitness! The first half of 2021 is behind us and a new normal has emerged. We have adapted to changing markets, new technology and a remote workplace. The pandemic has provided many individuals a time for reflection as some are contemplating retirement sooner rather than later. But have you really crunched the numbers? Our world is transforming right before our eyes and the value of financial planning, in my opinion, is at a critical level. Trying to put all the pieces of the financial puzzle together isn’t so easy, especially if you are working, raising a family and trying to navigate what’s coming next. I have met with so many people over the last 12 months and have realized that most do not fully understand the true costs of an early retirement. Inaccurate assumptions about Medicare, Social Security benefits and how to draw from savings and investments in a tax- efficient manner have been the most concerning. REASSESS YOUR FINANCIAL GOALS Sounds simple, right? At the beginning of the year, you may have set financial goals geared toward improving your financial situation such as building an emergency reserve or paying off the mortgage. Your income, expenses and life circumstances may have changed and it’s time to rethink your priorities and have a strategy in place to get back on track. TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR TAXES Check your withholding, especially if you owed taxes or received a large refund. Doing that now, rather than waiting until year-end might help you avoid owing a big tax bill next year or giving Uncle Sam an interest-free loan. Have you sold investments? Don’t forget to plan for taxes on short and long-term capital gains. Gains, along with dividends and interest could create an unexpected tax bite next year.

CHECK YOUR RETIREMENT SAVINGS If you are still working, the contribution limit for 2021 is $19,500, or $26,000 if you’re age 50 or older. And don’t forget to ask if you have a Roth 401k- this is a great way to diversify your taxable and non-taxable income during retirement. This is also a great time to review your asset allocation to make sure it is still in line with your financial goals and tolerance for risk. Remember, if you are a stay- at- home spouse, you can contribute $6,000 to an IRA or Roth IRA and an additional $1,000 if age 50 or older.1 EVALUATE YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGE Your insurance needs can change over time, especially if you are recently widowed or divorced. Are the kids grown and out on their own? Is the mortgage paid off? How much disability or life insurance coverage do you have? FINALLY, ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS: • Do you Have a plan for Retirement? • Have you figured out how to maximize social security benefits? • How can you protect your savings from inflation? • Have you planned for the staggering costs of long-term care? • If needed, do you have a strategy in place to use Home Equity wisely? • How do you secure more retirement income? • Do you need to create or update your will? • Are your beneficiary designations up to date? The beautiful new lighted display case is appropriately located in a highly visible, central location for patients, visitors and staff to behold. In earning Magnet recognition, we also received an extraordinary seven exemplars for exemplary professional practice—from the Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Center to the Emergency Department and ICU and other inpatient areas. As the new normal continues to unfold, we’re grateful that so many things have returned to the “normal” we once knew. Our favorite restaurants are seating customers at full capacity, movie theaters are screening feature films, grocery store aisles are open to two-way “traffic.” Though they’re small comforts in the grand scheme of things, these and so many daily activities we took for granted over the past year and half are indeed that: comforting. We’re hopeful that the business owners and professionals who took a hit during the pandemic, whether it was a financial or a personnel hit, continue to bounce back. They are familiar faces in our daily routines, and we’re eager to continue giving them our

support. And many of you already have! NOW READ THIS! Does literary inspiration come in the salt-water spray of the Shore? For whatever reason, Monmouth County seems to attract writers. Three local literary lions have new books out; see if one of them strikes your fancy: Slavery in Jersey In five previous books, Farmingdale resident Rick Geffken put a spotlight on Monmouth County’s history, with accounts of lost amusement parks and a 50-year narrative (1965–2015) of Shrewsbury. Now his Stories of Slavery in New Jersey recalls a troubled history we dare not forget. It explains how enslaved people were first brought to New Jersey by Dutch and English settlers and reveals why New Jersey didn’t officially abolish slavery until 1866—the last Northern state to do so. So what drives Geffken, 75, to research and write about his home state? “Ever since I was a young boy exploring the hills of the Highlands and Twin Lights, I’ve been fascinated by the 350 years of post-contact local history,” he says. Geffken eventually researched the origins of his own Farmingdale property—it was once owned by New Jersey’s first royal colonial governor, Lewis Morris. “It seemed that everywhere I turned, streets, geographic features and older buildings were named for long-gone early settlers and, of course, the original owners of this land, the Lenape natives,” he says. “I felt compelled to contribute to our written history.”

Drama on the Shore A longtime Jersey Shore resident, Long Branch native and current Asbury Park resident Wallace Stroby has seen his share of memorable moments—fodder for his fiction—and he has a potent imagination too. Now 61, Stroby this year released his ninth novel, Heaven’s a Lie, a crime fiction drama. It’s a perfect beach book or poolside read with all the elements of a big-screen blockbuster: a young female protagonist, a fatal car accident, guns, money and more (no spoilers here). Life lessons from a local Nicole Melleby is a Jersey girl, so she’s as tough as they come. But for her sixth middle-grade (grades 4–7) book, How to Become a Planet, the Middletown native and Keyport resident covers topics like youth anxiety and depression. Such are the struggles the outer-space-loving main character, Pluto, encounters as she starts another summer. “Pluto-the-planet isn’t a planet anymore, and Pluto-the-person doesn’t know where she fits anymore either,” Melleby explains. Melleby adds that a saying from her childhood motivated her in writing Planet: “Beach kids feel no pain.” “Growing up as a Monmouth County beach kid, that is always something that stayed in my mind,” she says, “because, of course, we do feel pain.” She notes that some of her characters “are clearly struggling.” But though she writes about the struggles, Melleby underscores the fact that kids who face difficulties are never alone in their battles. To make the lessons more real, especially to local readers, Melleby has the characters in each of her books visit familiar Monmouth County landmarks.

Like any pup (she was only 8 weeks old when adopted), Luna was unsure of her new home when she arrived in New Jersey—but today she’s a different pooch. “She has all the confidence in the world,” Pugliese says. “She has definitely found her voice but maintains her sweet and playful personality.” Playtime includes rolling over and getting belly rubs and frolicking with her favorite bacon-scented ball. Malouf received the Johnson & Johnson Nurses Innovate QuickFire Challenge in COVID-19 Patient Care for her invention of the IsoPouch, a disposable, transparent pouch that adheres to an isolation gown. The pouch helps healthcare workers quickly and easily gather supplies and preserve personal protective equipment (PPE). She was recognized among hundreds of applicants worldwide for ideas to improve COVID-19 care. In May, Malouf was recognized by her hometown of Middletown with a proclamation from the township’s mayor. She currently is working on securing an international patent for the IsoPouch.

MAGNETIC APPEAL

Monmouth Medical Center’s advanced MRI technology offers a unique look inside the human body—making disease detection easier and precise.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which uses magnets and radio waves to make a detailed image of the body, has been around for decades—but it keeps improving. Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) offers advanced techniques and state-of-the-art technology, such as adjustable receiver coils, allowing for increased patient comfort as well as more precise imaging and reporting by the radiologist. Its MRI units hold accreditation from the American College of Radiology, an achievement recognized as the gold standard for quality in medical imaging. MRI for Heart Disease Monmouth Medical Center’s MRI equipment was recently upgraded to offer special evaluations of the heart. “A cardiac MRI is the gold

standard for assessing the structure and function of the heart,” says Ajay Shah, M.D., Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at MMC. A cardiac MRI assesses blood flow, heart valve structure and inflammation, helping doctors diagnose heart disease, aneurysm and cardiomyopathy. “An MRI helps us determine a patient’s prognosis and treatment,” says Dr. Shah. MRI for Liver Disease MRI is used to detect or monitor liver disease and to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for patients with liver disease related to excess fat and iron storage, says Tejas Shinde, M.D., Chair of Radiology at MMC. The liver is one of the main iron storage organs and usually the first to show iron overload. Therefore, detection and

quantification of liver iron overload are critical to optimize treatment and prevent complications, says Dr. Shinde. “Our advanced MRI technology offers precise diagnosis and accurate noninvasive quantification of iron overload,” he says. Iron overload can be either primary (genetic) or secondary. Primary iron overload is most commonly associated with an inherited condition called hemochromatosis. Secondary iron overload is associated with ineffective erythropoiesis, the process which produces red blood cells, and predominantly caused by long-term transfusion therapy. Excess iron can poison organs, which can lead to conditions such as cancer, irregular heartbeat and cirrhosis of the liver. Fat deposition is a common condition of the liver. Fat is the hallmark of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease but may also occur with other entities such as alcohol abuse, HIV and genetic lipodystrophies and chemotherapy. “Left untreated, it can lead to liver fibrosis, which causes diminished blood flow throughout the liver and a buildup of scar tissue. Without treatment, liver fibrosis may lead to cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer,” Dr. Shinde says. MRI elastography is an advanced imaging technique used to measure liver stiffness. “This is useful in staging the degree of liver fibrosis in patients with hepatitis/ cirrhosis, which previously could only be performed through liver biopsy. However, elastography can painlessly provide a fibrosis score to identify those patients that would benefit from treatment or may require additional screening for hepatocellular carcinoma,” says Shabbir Naqvi, M.D., a radiologist with MMC.

MRI for Prostate and Testicles Multiparametric MRI of the prostate is an advanced MRI protocol that is used to screen for prostate cancer. It allows radiologists to identify and localize the most aggressive lesions, so that prostate biopsy can be directed to the area of concern. It also has the ability to evaluate for local tumor extension as well as any metastatic disease in the pelvis. “MRI of the testicles is a valuable problem-solving technique when other imaging modalities have yielded indeterminate results. The Monmouth Medical Center MRI department is one of the few sites in Central Jersey offering this advanced technique,” Dr. Shinde says.

HAM & CHEESE SLIDERS Yields 12 servings

INGREDIENTS:

n 12 Hawaiian-style rolls cut in half crosswise (do not separate the rolls) n ¾ lb. deli ham, thinly sliced n ½ lb. Swiss cheese, sliced n 6 Tbs. butter, melted n 2 tsp. Dijon mustard n 2 tsp. poppy seeds n 1½ tsp. dried minced onion n 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce n 1 Tbs. chopped parsley n cooking spray

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Coat a sheet pan with cooking spray. Place the bottom half of the rolls on the pan. Layer the ham on top of the rolls, then layer the cheese over the ham. Place the tops of the rolls over the cheese. In a small bowl, whisk together the butter, mustard, poppy seeds, dried onion and Worcestershire sauce. Drizzle the butter mixture over the tops of the rolls. Cover the sandwiches with foil and bake for 15 minutes or until cheese is melted. Uncover the rolls and bake for 3–5 minutes more until the tops of the rolls are lightly browned. Sprinkle parsley over the top. Cut into individual sandwiches and serve immediately.

SLOPPY JOES Yields 6 sandwiches

INGREDIENTS:

n 1 Tbs. butter n 2 garlic cloves, minced n 1 onion, finely chopped n 1 green capsicum/bell pepper, diced n 1 lb. ground beef (mince) n 1 Tbs. Dijon mustard (or 1 tsp. dry mustard) n 1½ Tbs. brown sugar n ½ cup ketchup n 14.1 oz. crushed tomato, canned n 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce n 1 Tbs. tomato paste n 1 beef bouillon cube, crumbled n ¼ tsp. black pepper To serve: n 5 to 6 soft rolls n cheese slices (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Melt butter in a large pot over high heat. Add garlic and onion and cook for 2 minutes until onion is almost translucent. Add capsicum and cook for 2 minutes until softened. Add beef and cook, breaking it up as you go, until it changes from red to brown. Add remaining ingredients. Mix well, then turn heat down to medium low (or low for strong stoves). Cover and cook for 30 minutes, stirring once or twice to make sure it doesn’t catch on the base. (If in a hurry, cook 15 minutes without lid.) Remove lid and give it a good stir for a minute. Mixture should be thick, not runny and saucy. Adjust salt to taste. Toast rolls. Butter if desired. Pile on lots of filling, immediately top with cheese (heat should semi-melt, otherwise pop under broiler/grill). Top with lid and serve immediately.

BACON BREAKFAST BURRITO Yields 4 servings

INGREDIENTS:

n 6 eggs n 2–3 tsp. (or as needed) olive oil or butter n 4 oz. grated cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, Mexican blend) n 4 slices bacon (cooked until crispy) n 4 large “burrito-sized” flour tortillas n chipotle aioli for drizzling n salt and pepper to taste For the chipotle aioli: n ½ cup all-natural mayonnaise n ½ lemon (juiced) n 2 tsp. chipotle adobo sauce (or to taste) n 1/8 tsp. garlic powder n 1/8–¼ tsp. ground cayenne pepper plus extra to taste n 1/8 tsp. salt

DIRECTIONS:

To make the chipotle sauce, whisk together ingredients and set aside. Recipe yields approximately ½ cup of sauce. Cook bacon via preferred method until crispy. Chop into bite-sized pieces and set aside. Whisk eggs. Heat a pan with oil/butter to medium heat, add eggs and scramble until cooked through. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Add eggs to a greased pan heated to medium heat and scramble until cooked through. Transfer cooked eggs to a large bowl. For easy burrito assembly, warm each tortilla in the microwave for 20 seconds to steam it before filling/ rolling, as they’re easier to fold when warm. For each burrito, warm tortilla and arrange eggs, bacon and cheese in the center of each tortilla. Drizzle with chipotle aioli. Fold and roll until sealed. Place seam-side down.

Grape Expectations You’d imagine this juicy, bite-sized fruit to be nutritious as well as refreshing. You’d be right. The grape is a crisp, refreshing treat that has nourished everyone from the emperors of yore to the oenophiles of today. The versatile fruit, from the genus Vitis (and in botanical terms considered a berry), is the basis not only for wine, but also for juices and jams and jellies and raisins. And by itself, snapped from its native bunch, it’s no mean pop-inyour-mouth snack. Grapes’ wide diversity, from the type you’d spot in vineyards to those you find in the produce section, makes them one of the most bountiful and widely available foods. Grapes as a standard crop date back to ancient civilizations. Records in China show grapes being used in fermented beverages as early as 7000 B.C. Iran has similar annals noting the residue from grapes in pots just as long ago. There are references to wine in classic mythology and religious literature. And it’s a common belief that raisins were discovered in ancient times as well when, as the crop was grown on vine after vine, some grapes were left on too long and eventually dried and wrinkled.

In a tightly sealed plastic bag they’re usually good in the fridge for one to two weeks. Place them in the crisper for added humidity, which helps the grapes keep longer. Or freeze them if you plan to cook with them later, as long as you use them all in one go. Grapes are so open and inviting that rinsing them in the sink and plucking them right off the stem can do nicely.

But if you need more frills for your consumption, consider freezing them beforehand. Add a little powdered sugar if you’re looking to spoil yourself. Grapes make a great base for a fruit salad or a smoothie. Their sweet flavor, smooth texture and acidic nature enable them to pair with a number of dishes. Maybe a nice cheese plate. Or consider roasting your grapes for a crostini; it makes the juice that much sweeter. And they always do well in sauces, spreads and garnishes as sides to any meat dish. POWER UP As one might expect from any fruit or berry, grapes’ health benefits are manifold. They contain antioxidants such as carotenoids and polyphenols that promote heart health and skin health. Some properties are said to help prevent the formation of free radicals, aiding the body in combating common types of cancer. That same action against free radicals—particularly by the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin—is thought to protect the eyes from retinal damage, making cataracts less likely. So if you’re looking to maintain good vision, keep an eye out for grapes. If vitamin supplements of K and C aren’t within reach, it might help to snag off a bunch of this natural supply of both. In fact, the potassium content in grapes is so concentrated it can help regulate blood pressure and also boost the body’s storage of electrolytes. They help you to flush out excess water and toxins that you naturally produce, in case you were feeling a little burdened by them lately. A 100-gram serving of your common grapes found in stores has about 70 calories, as well as about 20 milligrams of phosphorus, which is vital to promoting the strength of bones and teeth. We’re all looking to stay healthy these days, and consuming grapes—either red or green—is an easy and effective step in that direction. Not bad for a handy little fruit that’s 81 percent water!

This tart cocktail bridges the gap between summer and fall, when you might still want a drink that's refreshing but not too summery.

FIG THYME SHRUB COCKTAIL Yields: 1 serving

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE FIG THYME SHRUB n 2 cups fresh figs, diced n ¾ cup granulated sugar n 1 cup apple cider vinegar n 10 sprigs fresh thyme FOR THE COCKTAIL n 1½ oz. vodka n ½ oz. freshly squeezed lime juice n 1½ oz. fig thyme shrub n 2 oz. club soda n halved fresh figs, for garnish, n thyme sprigs, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

Make the shrub. In a medium plastic or glass bowl, combine the figs, sugar, vinegar and thyme. Stir to combine, cover with plastic wrap and let sit in the fridge overnight. In the morning, strain through a fine mesh strainer and discard the figs and thyme. To make the cocktail, add crushed ice to a glass. Add the vodka, lime juice and shrub and stir to combine. Add the club soda and stir again to combine. Garnish with figs and a sprig of thyme!

Move for Hunger in Red Bank recently transported 300,000 pounds of food to food banks across the country. These donations equate to over 250,000 meals for families in need. 1 Noah poses in front of some of the food delivered across the country.

The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run. We left Keyport midafternoon and caught a few smaller striped bass—but as soon as this one was on the line, I knew it was a good one.
