A DVERTI S EMENT
Reaching Retirement W
ELCOME to the latest editions of Fiscal Fitness! The first half of 2021 is behind us and a new normal has emerged. We have adapted to changing markets, new technology and a remote workplace. The pandemic has provided many individuals a time for reflection as some are contemplating retirement sooner rather than later. But have you really crunched the numbers? Our world is transforming right before our eyes and the value of financial planning, in my opinion, is at a critical level. Trying to put all the pieces of the financial puzzle together isn’t so easy, especially if you are working, raising a family and trying to navigate what’s coming next. I have met with so many people over the last 12 months and have realized that most do not fully understand the true costs of an early retirement. Inaccurate assumptions about Medicare, Social Security benefits and how to draw from savings and investments in a tax- efficient manner have been the most concerning. REASSESS YOUR FINANCIAL GOALS Sounds simple, right? At the beginning of the year, you may have set financial goals geared toward improving your financial situation such as building an emergency reserve or paying off the mortgage. Your income, expenses and life circumstances may have changed and it’s time to rethink your priorities and have a strategy in place to get back on track. TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR TAXES Check your withholding, especially if you owed taxes or received a large refund. Doing that now, rather than waiting until year-end might help you avoid owing a big tax bill next year or giving Uncle Sam an interest-free loan. Have you sold investments? Don’t forget to plan for taxes on short and long-term capital gains. Gains, along with dividends and interest could create an unexpected tax bite next year.
Footnotes:
CHECK YOUR RETIREMENT SAVINGS If you are still working, the contribution limit for 2021 is $19,500, or $26,000 if you’re age 50 or older. And don’t forget to ask if you have a Roth 401k- this is a great way to diversify your taxable and non-taxable income during retirement. This is also a great time to review your asset allocation to make sure it is still in line with your financial goals and tolerance for risk. Remember, if you are a stay- at- home spouse, you can contribute $6,000 to an IRA or Roth IRA and an additional $1,000 if age 50 or older.1 EVALUATE YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGE Your insurance needs can change over time, especially if you are recently widowed or divorced. Are the kids grown and out on their own? Is the mortgage paid off? How much disability or life insurance coverage do you have? FINALLY, ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS: • Do you Have a plan for Retirement? • Have you figured out how to maximize social security benefits? • How can you protect your savings from inflation? • Have you planned for the staggering costs of long-term care? • If needed, do you have a strategy in place to use Home Equity wisely? • How do you secure more retirement income? • Do you need to create or update your will? • Are your beneficiary designations up to date? If you need help answering these questions, now is the time to meet with an experienced and qualified CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER ™ professional who can guide you in the right direction. Together we can make a difference….

The theme for this issue of Monmouth Health & Life is “Readers’ Choice,” and in our In Good Health pages, we spotlight a primary factor in our standing as the community’s first choice for safe, compassionate health care. At Monmouth Medical Center (MMC), our nurses provide exceptionally compassionate care, advocating for our patients in every situation, on every level and treating every patient and family member as if they were caring for their own. In this issue, you’ll meet two nurse leaders widely recognized for caring for their staff like family—facilitating a patient care environment that is one of positive energy, compassion and teamwork. Honored with Nurse Leader Awards, they were praised for always going above and beyond for their staff, which our assistant clinical director for the emergency department extended to parking his RV outside of the ED during the first wave of COVID and staying there for weeks to support his team. Inside our hospital, our nursing excellence literally shines, as we recently unveiled a Nursing Excellence display case, with special illumination cast on the crown jewel of our quality awards, the Magnet obelisk. In January 2020, MMC learned that The American Nurses Credentialing Center had conferred the prestigious Magnet® recognition to MMC as a reflection of our nursing professionalism, teamwork and superiority in patient care. The beautiful new lighted display case is appropriately located in a highly visible, central location for patients, visitors and staff to behold. In earning Magnet recognition, we also received an extraordinary seven exemplars for exemplary professional practice—from the Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Center to the Emergency Department and ICU and other inpatient areas. This was truly across-the-board recognition of the outstanding work done by our nurses. As a high-reliability organization, MMC has safety embedded in everything we do. Our skilled and dedicated nurses play a key role in our commitment to “Safety Together”— our continuing quest to unite our organization in a culture of safety to achieve top-tier clinical outcomes and deliver the highest quality care and safest experience for our patients, communities and workforce. Please continue to stay well and take excellent care of yourselves, and know that we are here to safely and compassionately meet all of your health care needs.

Giving You the Very Best
As the new normal continues to unfold, we’re grateful that so many things have returned to the “normal” we once knew. Our favorite restaurants are seating customers at full capacity, movie theaters are screening feature films, grocery store aisles are open to two-way “traffic.” Though they’re small comforts in the grand scheme of things, these and so many daily activities we took for granted over the past year and half are indeed that: comforting. We’re hopeful that the business owners and professionals who took a hit during the pandemic, whether it was a financial or a personnel hit, continue to bounce back. They are familiar faces in our daily routines, and we’re eager to continue giving them our
support. And many of you already have! Once again this year, Monmouth Health & Life gave readers the opportunity to show their appreciation for their favorite businesses with our annual “Best of Monmouth” poll. Our online ballots allowed you to vote for your choice of the top bagel shop, pizza parlor, menswear store, barber shop, interior design service—and much more. Perhaps casting these ballots was one of the comforts you were excited about, as we were once again impressed by the total participation in this year’s poll. We know you can’t wait, so flip to page 35 and see all of the winners in “Best of Monmouth 2021.” Congratulations to all, and thank you to everyone who submitted a ballot. In celebration of Monmouth’s best, we are also proud to spotlight the county’s healthcare leader, Monmouth Medical Center (MMC). As we do in every issue, Monmouth Health & Life showcases the latest news from MMC in the “In Good Health” section. This month, one of the stories you’ll read focuses on the hospital’s nurses, specifically their award-winning and innovative approaches to delivering compassionate care. Read all about it in “Committed to Excellence” on page 32. September, of course, is back-to-school time for many kids, and we want to show parents some of the best ideas to help young ones return to class. Check out some of the season’s coolest backpacks on page 20 and five fashionable looks to cater to your kid’s personality on page 48. For little ones who are just starting the learn, the toys on page 22 are designed to provide hours of fun—and can teach tots a thing or two. We hope you enjoy this edition featuring Monmouth’s best as much as we enjoyed putting it together. And we hope seeing and supporting some of your favorites—as well as supporting the “new kids on the block”— brings you closer to the old normal.

OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTY.
WHO WANTS ICE CREAM?
ICE IS NICE These Monmouth County locations may serve other sweets, but all eyes are on their Italian ices: Igloo Italian Ice, Oakhurst. A new “ice age” is under way here as visitors choose among more than a dozen flavors, including Nutella and sour apple. • 2005 Route 35, Oakhurst, 732.531.5422; iglooitalianice.com
We all scream for ice cream during the dog days of summer, but let’s face it: The classic dessert is delicious any time of the year. The average American reportedly consumes 23 gallons of the sweet stuff annually, so if you’re not up to that pace, someone else is getting your share. You’d best head for one of these sweet spots to catch up: Cookman Creamery, Asbury Park. While the vanilla and chocolate here get our thumbs-up, we also love this shop’s specialty flavors, including caramel pretzel, matcha and honey lavender. Vegan? Pick from 17 flavors made with vegan bases such as coconut cream and almond butter. • 711 Cookman Ave., Asbury Park, 732.361.5215; cookmancreamery.com
Hoffman’s Ice Cream, Long Branch, Spring Lake Heights. Voted “Best Ice Cream” in our 2020 Readers’ Choice Poll, this shop pleases with an array of fresh, rich ice cream (non-dairy and no-sugar desserts also available)—all made at its Point Pleasant flagship.
Strollo’s Italian Ice, Belmar. Unlike the similarly named Strollo’s Lighthouse stands along the Shore, this favorite serves ices in classic flavors from a yellow-and-blue shop on the Shark River. • 501 Main St., Belmar, 732.681.6147
Strollo’s Lighthouse, multiple locations. Each of the red, white and blue shops offers an abundance of ice flavors as well as ice cream and shakes. • strolloslighthouse.com
Uncle Louie G, multiple locations. This company has shops throughout the state; the ones in Monmouth are sweet escapes from the beachy heat. With pastel colors and candy-striped accents, even the storefronts make you feel like a kid again. • unclelouiegee.com
• 444 Ocean Blvd. N., Long Branch, 732.229.5500; 569 Church St., Spring Lake Heights, 732.974.2253; hoffmansicecream.net
Jersey Freeze, Holmdel, Freehold. Sweet tooths will find soft-serve and hardpacked ice cream (as well as fat- and dairy-free options) at both shops. Stop at the Freehold location if you want grub like burgers, cheesesteaks and sandwiches too. • 120 Manalapan Ave., Freehold, 732.462.3008; 101 Crawfords Corner Rd., Holmdel, 732.837.0355; jerseyfreeze1952.com
Rita’s Italian Ice, multiple locations. Rita’s is a crowd pleaser. Get a classic Italian ice or a frozen custard to cool off after a long day. • ritasice.com
Rudy’s on Main, Lake Como. With flavors like Sicilian cannoli and rainbow cookie, this recently opened shop’s following is sure to grow. • 1623 Main St., Lake Como, 848.204.0758; rudysonmain.com
Ryan’s Homemade, Tinton Falls. Don’t let the long lines at this old-school parlor deter you—the homemade ice cream and creative flavors (pumpkin is coming back soon, autumn lovers) are worth the wait. • 462 Shrewsbury Ave., Tinton Falls, 732.842.5874; facebook. com/ryanshomemadeicecream
Sundaes the Ice Cream Place, Aberdeen, Manasquan. Locals and outof-towners alike appreciate the consistency and great taste of the shops’ traditional and custom flavors, like Robert Brownie Jr. and Ooey Gooey Oreo.
AN APPLE A DAY
More than 30 varieties of apples grow in the Garden State. And now is the time to visit the orchards and fresh farm markets and take your pick, because there are plenty of pies to bake, teachers to please and doctors to keep away. Here are a few Monmouth County favorites: • Battleview Orchards, 91 Wemrock Rd., Freehold, 732.462.0756; battlevieworchards.com • Eastmont Orchards, 181 Rte. 537 E., Colts Neck, 732.542.5404; eastmontorchards.com • Red Wagon Farm Market, 437 Rte. 33, Manalapan; redwagonfarmnj.com • Wemrock Orchards, 100 Wemrock Rd., Freehold, 732.431.2668; wemrockorchard.com

NOW READ THIS! Does literary inspiration come in the salt-water spray of the Shore? For whatever reason, Monmouth County seems to attract writers. Three local literary lions have new books out; see if one of them strikes your fancy: Slavery in Jersey In five previous books, Farmingdale resident Rick Geffken put a spotlight on Monmouth County’s history, with accounts of lost amusement parks and a 50-year narrative (1965–2015) of Shrewsbury. Now his Stories of Slavery in New Jersey recalls a troubled history we dare not forget. It explains how enslaved people were first brought to New Jersey by Dutch and English settlers and reveals why New Jersey didn’t officially abolish slavery until 1866—the last Northern state to do so. So what drives Geffken, 75, to research and write about his home state? “Ever since I was a young boy exploring the hills of the Highlands and Twin Lights, I’ve been fascinated by the 350 years of post-contact local history,” he says. Geffken eventually researched the origins of his own Farmingdale property—it was once owned by New Jersey’s first royal colonial governor, Lewis Morris. “It seemed that everywhere I turned, streets, geographic features and older buildings were named for long-gone early settlers and, of course, the original owners of this land, the Lenape natives,” he says. “I felt compelled to contribute to our written history.”
CULINARY CORNER
Drama on the Shore A longtime Jersey Shore resident, Long Branch native and current Asbury Park resident Wallace Stroby has seen his share of memorable moments—fodder for his fiction—and he has a potent imagination too. Now 61, Stroby this year released his ninth novel, Heaven’s a Lie, a crime fiction drama. It’s a perfect beach book or poolside read with all the elements of a big-screen blockbuster: a young female protagonist, a fatal car accident, guns, money and more (no spoilers here). Readers in our area will note that this page-turner— like other Stroby books—is set almost entirely in our county, proving that whether or not heaven is deceptive, Monmouth is the real deal.
• Bao Dumplings & Bao Tea, 1358 Rte. 36, Hazlet, 732.217.3656; baodumplingsandbaotea.com
Life lessons from a local Nicole Melleby is a Jersey girl, so she’s as tough as they come. But for her sixth middle-grade (grades 4–7) book, How to Become a Planet, the Middletown native and Keyport resident covers topics like youth anxiety and depression. Such are the struggles the outer-space-loving main character, Pluto, encounters as she starts another summer. “Pluto-the-planet isn’t a planet anymore, and Pluto-the-person doesn’t know where she fits anymore either,” Melleby explains. Melleby adds that a saying from her childhood motivated her in writing Planet: “Beach kids feel no pain.” “Growing up as a Monmouth County beach kid, that is always something that stayed in my mind,” she says, “because, of course, we do feel pain.” She notes that some of her characters “are clearly struggling.” But though she writes about the struggles, Melleby underscores the fact that kids who face difficulties are never alone in their battles. To make the lessons more real, especially to local readers, Melleby has the characters in each of her books visit familiar Monmouth County landmarks.

Reaching new heights There’s no shortage of bars in Jersey’s Shore towns, but one that’s sure to reel you back time and again is Heights 27 Bar & Grill. Opened earlier this summer, the new hangout brings live music, happy hour specials and elevated pub fare to the spot formerly occupied by CJ’s Tavern. We’re talking plates like tuna tartare, pork chops and New York strips. But if all you crave is pub grub such as pretzels, wings and burgers, all of that—and a bag of chips—is here too! • Heights 27 Bar & Grill, 2407 Route 71, Spring Lake Heights, 732.449.7449; heights27.com
It’s tea time Bao Dumplings & Bao Tea made its debut in Hazlet this summer, jumping on the boba tea craze that has emerged in recent years. But this eatery has staying power thanks to its easy-to-eat and uber-comforting dumplings. Each order, from veggie and egg dumplings to heartier beef and lamb varieties, is made from scratch, guaranteeing fresh tastes and flavors. Assorted rice and noodle dishes are also available, as are various fruit, cheese foam and, of course, boba teas. Attention, lovers of sweet things! The made-from-scratch offerings at this eatery include mouthwatering crumb cakes, brownies, scones, cupcakes, cookies and tarts. Custom cakes and cookies are also available, while breads, croissants and pot pies may be added to the menu. • Cookie & Crumb, 1 West Ave., Atlantic Highlands, 732.872.4329; originalcookieandcrumb.com
PUPPY LOVE Dog: Luna Bella, 2-year-old mini dachshund Owners: David Paulen and Jackie Pugliese of Aberdeen After a long period of research, Paulen and Pugliese were convinced in early 2019 that a mini dachshund would be ideal for their family. Their search for the perfect pup led them to Ohio, where Luna, “a tiny tan-colored nugget,” immediately gripped their hearts, Pugliese says. Like any pup (she was only 8 weeks old when adopted), Luna was unsure of her new home when she arrived in New Jersey—but today she’s a different pooch. “She has all the confidence in the world,” Pugliese says. “She has definitely found her voice but maintains her sweet and playful personality.” Playtime includes rolling over and getting belly rubs and frolicking with her favorite bacon-scented ball. Mom and Dad have also discovered Luna’s love for the swimming. Says Pugliese: “She’s definitely a summertime babe.” When she’s not playing, Luna loves to explore Holmdel and Thompson Park. Follow Luna on her adventures on Instagram @lunabella_gram. Want to see your pup in a future issue? Email rita.guarna@wainscotmedia.com.

{ EARLY EDUCATION }
LEARN TO WALK. Teach your tot not just how to walk but how to balance too with the physician-invented Delta Children First Steps Learn2Walk Balancer. Bungee technology helps little ones safely maintain center of gravity, while interactive features and “play mode” also help build fine motor skills. Ages 6 months to 2 years. Available at buybuy Baby, West Long Branch, 732.542.1953.
Learning Curve! These toys promise to help your little one build knowledge through everyday fun. Babies and toddlers have no official schoolwork, but their “curriculum” is the most ambitious one going: the world itself. Playing is their way of discovering, and toys can facilitate that process. The eight educational products here have been handpicked by our editors (hey, some of us are parents too!) to foster your child’s skills and imagination in a way that’s both fun and engaging. Help your youngster...
LEARN THE ALPHABET. With this one your child will surely get an “A”—and all the other letters too. A bilingual baby? Si, Señor, with the Musical Turtle Toy in English and Spanish from iPlay iLearn. This little guy has four modes: numbers, letters, happy laughter and “crawl and chase,” the last of which is perfect once your tyke starts moving. Ages 6 months to 6 years. Available at iplayilearn.com.
LEARN TO PLAY MUSIC. Inspire your rockstar-in-the-making to get strumming with the Loog Mini acoustic guitar, which has three strings to make learning to play a breeze. It even comes with an app and flash cards that teach kids how to form chords. Ages 3 and up. Available at loogguitars.com.

LEARN THROUGH ROLE PLAYING. The LittiCity Pretend Play Teachers Set gets a gold star for creativity. The play set comes with a dry-erase board, classroom posters, reward stickers, a school bell and more props, teaching aspiring educators their numbers and letters through role play and dress-up. Ages 3 and up. Available at Walmart, Freehold, 732.780.3048.
LEARN TO STRATEGIZE. Young children may not be quite ready for a game of Risk, but they can learn strategy via Monza, a classic racing-car board game from Haba in which the goal is to be the first one to the finish line. The 20th-anniversary version comes in a limited-edition, metalembossed tin with metallic painted dice and a new track. Ages 5 and up. Available at Toybox, Colts Neck, 732.866.6676
LEARN TO COUNT. Numbers, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills are among the things toddlers will finesse with the Haba Rainbow Caterpillar Threading Game. Bonus: The “sewing” will keep them busy and concentrating so hard they’ll pretty much forget about their iPads. Ages 3 and up. Available at Quinnderella’s Toys, Manasquan, 732.223.1124.
LEARN TO BE HEALTHY. Mask-wearing and hand-sanitizing this year didn’t teach kids enough about germs, right? They’ll learn even more about how to protect their bodies with MEandMine’s Fish Out Germs, which includes a fishing game, a book and a trio of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) projects. The goal of the fishing game is to build up white blood cells and “fish out” germs through sensory play and building. Ages 5 to 8. Available at amazon.com.
LEARN TO BUILD. Focus and patience are the names of the game with Plus-Plus GO! Monster Trucks, which let your kid’s imagination run (or race?) wild. This kit contains 600 pieces, 10 wheels and three chassis baseplates to allow for customization of each vehicle. Ages 5 to 12. Available at Target, Middletown, 732.706.9222.

Wainscot Media publishes several special sections throughout the year in our regional magazines. Contact us today to learn more about freelance opportunities available. What is a Periodontist? A periodontist is a specialist in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases that affect gums and supporting bones of the teeth. Your general dentist may refer you to a periodontist if it’s determined further specialized treatment is needed when disease is present. In addition, periodontists specialize in the surgical placement of dental implants when teeth are lost due to gum disease or other tooth traumas. A highly-trained periodontist can correct a gummy smile, gum recession or other non-disease complications with surgical and non-surgical techniques. Working closely with general dentists and other dental specialists, my team and I are dedicated to improving the overall health and aesthetics of every patient’s beautiful smile.
Can my teeth be saved if my gums are damaged?

Depending on the severity and progression of a person’s periodontal condition, multiple treatment options are available to restore your natural teeth, supporting soft tissue and bone back to health. Bleeding gums, periodontal pockets, bone loss and loose teeth caused by gum disease may be fully treatable with non-surgical or surgical treatments. Our office offers a more effective method of treating gum disease using LANAP laser surgical technique. A high-energy thin laser fiber is inserted into the periodontal pockets killing bad bacteria and eliminating diseased tissue in a less invasive manner. Two weeks after surgery, our patients are very pleased when their gums have returned to a healthy pink and perio pocketing has substantially decreased. If full-mouth restoration is necessary, we offer the option of staged implant restorations (one at a time). Whether we’re able to keep your natural teeth using our state-of-the-art surgical techniques or replace hopeless teeth with dental implants or a full-mouth restoration, we’ll work with you to provide the best options possible.

The short answer is yes! Ninety-nine percent of the time a skillful surgeon is able to regenerate lost bone that’s strong enough for the placement and support of a dental implant. In the upper back teeth area, the sinus floor may prohibit the placement of a dental implant unless bone is first regenerated or grafted into the sinus floor. This procedure, sinus grafting or sinus lift, allows for an implant to be surgically placed into the grafted area after several months of healing time has accrued.
Dr. Richard Shin opened Alpine Periodontics & Dental Implant in 2003. Dr. Shin is a specialist in treating periodontal and gum disease and in the placement of dental implants. He’s been in practice for 20 years and has performed more than 30,000 surgical procedures. After graduating from New York School of Dentistry and completing his residency requirements at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, Dr. Shin completed a specialty program at NYU and achieved board certification in Periodontology in 2003. For more than 15 years he’s taught new dentists, most currently at NYU Dental School. Services Offered: • Implant Dentistry • Receding Gum & Grafting • Periodontal Care • Laser Dentistry & LANAP • Smile Makeover • IV Sedation (upon patient request) Residency Program

COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE
Monmouth Medical Center ED and MedSurg Unit nurse leaders honored with prestigious nursing award. Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) nurse leaders, who were praised for going above and beyond for their staff, have been honored with a special Nurse Recognition Award established to honor extraordinary nurses and the super-human work they do every day. Dave DeMatteo, assistant clinical director for MMC’s Emergency Department, and Stefonia Thompson, BSN, RN-BC, director of patient care for the hospital’s Borden 5 adult inpatient unit, were reDave DeMatteo: Everyone’s Cheerleader Many MMC staff remember DeMatteo for parking his RV outside of the ED during the first wave of COVID and staying there for weeks to help his staff. Colleagues say he goes out of his way to support nurses, despite how tired and overworked he may be, and he continually puts his own needs aside to help in any way that he can. Nominating staff offered the following testimonials for DeMatteo: “Dave is everyone’s cheerleader. He has a way of making everyone feel smart, cared-about and important. He pushes us to all be better.” “Dave does an unbelievable job of advocating for his nurses while maintaining his managerial responsibilities.” “I had a particularly difficult shift one night with an aggressive patient. I kept working, but Dave would not leave my stubborn self alone until I left the unit to take a walk with him. Despite being short-staffed, he made me go home early, telling me: ‘When your mind isn’t there, that’s when you make mistakes.’ I will never forget how he put my needs and emotions first, and I will always be grateful for that.”

Stefonia Thompson: Promoting A Positive Vision for Her Unit Thompson is described as a leader who cares for her staff like family. Staff who nominated her for the award say she is always well-informed with what is happening on the unit, and trusts them to make decisions, which promotes autonomy. She sets a tone for the unit, and her staff feels that the environment she facilitates is one of positive energy, compassion and teamwork. Colleagues note that Thompson goes above and beyond for her staff; she always makes herself available and is willing to help them, no matter the issue. Those who nominated her included the following words of praise: “Good staff buy-in starts with leadership, and Stefonia is always promoting a positive vision for the unit and how it fits into MMC. Borden 5’s quality indicators increased under Stefonia, as did HCAHP (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) scores. She has changed the unit culture for the better.” “Stefonia’s huddles are the best! Very thorough with high staff involvement and attention to detail. The education posted around the unit speaks to her eagerness to promote and increase nurse-sensitive indicators.” “Stefonia works with her staff so well, with an open-door policy and team approach. She is an excellent nurse, approachable, kind, compassionate, innovative and an advocate for her team. She is a leader in every way!” Stefonia Thompson (middle), Director of Patient Care for Borden 5, is shown here with, from left, Diann Johnston and Darla Harmer.
SPOTLIGHT ON NURSING EXCELLENCE
MORE HONORS FOR KATHLEEN MALOUF
Diann Johnston, Southern Region Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), RWJBarnabas Health, and CNO for Monmouth Medical Center, stands at MMC’s newly dedicated “Nursing Excellence” display case. Shown with special illumination is the crown jewel of MMC’s Nursing Excellence awards, the Magnet obelisk. In January 2020, MMC learned that The American Nurses Credentialing Center had conferred the prestigious Magnet® recognition as a reflection of its nursing professionalism, teamwork and superiority in patient care.
Kathleen Malouf, who works in Pediatric Medical Day Stay for Monmouth Medical Center’s Unterberg Children’s Hospital, was recently recognized with a State of New Jersey Senate and General Assembly commendation for her innovation in COVID-19 care. Malouf received the Johnson & Johnson Nurses Innovate QuickFire Challenge in COVID-19 Patient Care for her invention of the IsoPouch, a disposable, transparent pouch that adheres to an isolation gown. The pouch helps healthcare workers quickly and easily gather supplies and preserve personal protective equipment (PPE). She was recognized among hundreds of applicants worldwide for ideas to improve COVID-19 care. In May, Malouf was recognized by her hometown of Middletown with a proclamation from the township’s mayor. She currently is working on securing an international patent for the IsoPouch.

MAGNETIC APPEAL
Monmouth Medical Center’s advanced MRI technology offers a unique look inside the human body—making disease detection easier and precise.
Upgraded MRI equipment allows MMC cardiologist Ajay Shah, M.D. (seated), to better assess the heart. He is shown with MRI supervisor Nick DeMonte.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which uses magnets and radio waves to make a detailed image of the body, has been around for decades—but it keeps improving. Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) offers advanced techniques and state-of-the-art technology, such as adjustable receiver coils, allowing for increased patient comfort as well as more precise imaging and reporting by the radiologist. Its MRI units hold accreditation from the American College of Radiology, an achievement recognized as the gold standard for quality in medical imaging. MRI for Heart Disease Monmouth Medical Center’s MRI equipment was recently upgraded to offer special evaluations of the heart. “A cardiac MRI is the gold
standard for assessing the structure and function of the heart,” says Ajay Shah, M.D., Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at MMC. A cardiac MRI assesses blood flow, heart valve structure and inflammation, helping doctors diagnose heart disease, aneurysm and cardiomyopathy. “An MRI helps us determine a patient’s prognosis and treatment,” says Dr. Shah. MRI for Liver Disease MRI is used to detect or monitor liver disease and to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for patients with liver disease related to excess fat and iron storage, says Tejas Shinde, M.D., Chair of Radiology at MMC. The liver is one of the main iron storage organs and usually the first to show iron overload. Therefore, detection and
quantification of liver iron overload are critical to optimize treatment and prevent complications, says Dr. Shinde. “Our advanced MRI technology offers precise diagnosis and accurate noninvasive quantification of iron overload,” he says. Iron overload can be either primary (genetic) or secondary. Primary iron overload is most commonly associated with an inherited condition called hemochromatosis. Secondary iron overload is associated with ineffective erythropoiesis, the process which produces red blood cells, and predominantly caused by long-term transfusion therapy. Excess iron can poison organs, which can lead to conditions such as cancer, irregular heartbeat and cirrhosis of the liver. Fat deposition is a common condition of the liver. Fat is the hallmark of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease but may also occur with other entities such as alcohol abuse, HIV and genetic lipodystrophies and chemotherapy. “Left untreated, it can lead to liver fibrosis, which causes diminished blood flow throughout the liver and a buildup of scar tissue. Without treatment, liver fibrosis may lead to cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer,” Dr. Shinde says. MRI elastography is an advanced imaging technique used to measure liver stiffness. “This is useful in staging the degree of liver fibrosis in patients with hepatitis/ cirrhosis, which previously could only be performed through liver biopsy. However, elastography can painlessly provide a fibrosis score to identify those patients that would benefit from treatment or may require additional screening for hepatocellular carcinoma,” says Shabbir Naqvi, M.D., a radiologist with MMC.
Tejas Shinde, M.D., Chair of Radiology
Shabbir Naqvi, M.D., Radiologist
MRI for Prostate and Testicles Multiparametric MRI of the prostate is an advanced MRI protocol that is used to screen for prostate cancer. It allows radiologists to identify and localize the most aggressive lesions, so that prostate biopsy can be directed to the area of concern. It also has the ability to evaluate for local tumor extension as well as any metastatic disease in the pelvis. “MRI of the testicles is a valuable problem-solving technique when other imaging modalities have yielded indeterminate results. The Monmouth Medical Center MRI department is one of the few sites in Central Jersey offering this advanced technique,” Dr. Shinde says.

BARBECUE RESTAURANT
LOCAL SMOKE, MULTIPLE LOCATIONS, LOCALSMOKEBBQ.COM This award winner began as a BBQ competition team in 2007. After being named national Rookie Team of the Year their first season, they opened a catering company, which then turned into a chain of barbecue restaurants. With this success, it’s easy to understand the company’s mission: “to provide authentic, award-winning, slow-smoked BBQ and incredible service in a fun and clean atmosphere.” If you want a taste of blue-ribbon food, try the beef brisket or ribs—both have won first place in championship competitions.

SLOPPY JOES Yields 6 sandwiches
INGREDIENTS:
n 1 Tbs. butter n 2 garlic cloves, minced n 1 onion, finely chopped n 1 green capsicum/bell pepper, diced n 1 lb. ground beef (mince) n 1 Tbs. Dijon mustard (or 1 tsp. dry mustard) n 1½ Tbs. brown sugar n ½ cup ketchup n 14.1 oz. crushed tomato, canned n 2 tsp. BACON BREAKFAST BURRITO Yields 4 servings
INGREDIENTS:
n 6 eggs n 2–3 tsp. (or as needed) olive oil or butter n 4 oz. grated cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, Mexican blend) n 4 slices bacon (cooked until crispy) n 4 large “burrito-sized” flour tortillas n chipotle aioli for drizzling n salt and pepper to taste For the chipotle aioli: n ½ cup all-natural mayonnaise n ½ lemon (juiced) n 2 tsp. chipotle adobo sauce (or to taste) n 1/8 tsp. garlic powder n 1/8–¼ tsp. ground cayenne pepper plus extra to taste n 1/8 tsp. salt
DIRECTIONS:
To make the chipotle sauce, whisk together ingredients and set aside. Recipe yields approximately ½ cup of sauce. Cook bacon via preferred method until crispy. Chop into bite-sized pieces and set aside. Whisk eggs. Heat a pan with oil/butter to medium heat, add eggs and scramble until cooked through. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Add eggs to a greased pan heated to medium heat and scramble until cooked through. Transfer cooked eggs to a large bowl. For easy burrito assembly, warm each tortilla in the microwave for 20 seconds to steam it before filling/ rolling, as they’re easier to fold when warm. For each burrito, warm tortilla and arrange eggs, bacon and cheese in the center of each tortilla. Drizzle with chipotle aioli. Fold and roll until sealed. Place seam-side down.
—Hannah Byrne, RDN, Hannah Byrne Nutrition, Neptune
Bring a pan to medium heat with a little oil to prevent sticking. Once the pan is hot, add the burritos, seam side down and cook for about 3 minutes each side or until burritos are hot in the center and golden on the outside. Serve with additional chipotle sauce.

Kids tend to turn away anything green. Try spreading avocado on the tortilla to keep it hidden. Avocados are a great source of mono-unsaturated fatty acids as well as vitamin E, which is great for kids’ immune systems.”

Route 34 South Colts Neck, NJ 07722 732.462.1989 | www.deliciousorchardsnj.com THE FACE OF A TRUE FAMILY TREE How did a small orchard in Colts Neck become a 60,000-square-foot country food market attracting more than 2.5 million visitors annually? In 1974, the Barclay family hired a young produce stocker named Bill McDonald. Bill’s strong work ethic led him to many opportunities, from being promoted to the management team at age 20 to eventually saving enough money to buy the business. He also met a fellow employee named Linda, who would turn out to be his wife. Bill and Linda raised four children— Keri, Chris, Mike and Erin—who all grew up in the family business. SUROWITZ, ONE OF THE AREA’S MOST TRUSTED OB/GYN’S, realized her dream earlier this year by opening Tru Birth Center. A strong proponent of natural birthing techniques, Dr. Surowitz and her incredible team of Certified Nurse Midwives give women who believe in the natural birth experience the personalized care and unique birthing journey they desire and deserve. The Center’s ideology evolved from what is one of the most natural phenomenons on earth -- giving birth. Tru’s “mother first philosophy” offers the full range of midwifery care to support family choices in pregnancy and birth. Most healthy women do not need medical intervention to give birth and the result is a greatly reduced incidence of C-section births and episiotomies for moms and a less stressful experience for the baby. Dr. Surowitz’s dedication to natural birthing is reflected in her 2% C-section rate in comparison to the 30% state average. The biggest birth choice Tru offers families is the location of the birth, which the Tru team can perform in either their beautiful birth center, or at the world-class Monmouth Medical Center. Twenty-five years later, Dr. Patrick Cuozzo joined his father, and together they have worked tirelessly to build a premiere practice offering the most advanced methodology and latest technology available in orthodontics. “We minimize the time in braces by waiting for the right time to start treatment, ultimately improving not only the look of your smile, but the health and longevity of your teeth,” says Dr. Pat, a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a Clinical Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry teaching residents and future orthodontic leaders. Through advanced education, experience and expertise, Cuozzo Orthodontics has patients and their parents smiling at every visit.

1704 Maxwell Dr., #206, Wall, NJ 07719 | 848.220.9373 | www.breitowichlawfirm.com “THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON,” and in Sylvia L. Breitowich’s case, the old adage certainly rang true. Originally focused on a criminal defense practice, an internship with a solo practitioner who handled both criminal defense and family law matters, introduced her to the complex world of matrimonial and family law, ultimately guiding Sylvia’s future. In January 2019, Sylvia opened her own practice offering anyone who comes through the doors her devoted service and the legal experience they deserve when dealing with difficult family decisions. Sylvia’s unique style begins with client strategy sessions where case plans are developed and serve as a blueprint to manage and exceed expectations. As a Collaboratively Trained Lawyer, Sylvia guides clients toward family mediation to eliminate unnecessary chaos throughout the process and to secure a favorable resolution without litigation. “I am a strong believer that most cases should settle out of court,” says Sylvia, a R.140 Qualified Mediator. “After all, why should a judge decide the future of your family.” A Rising Star Super Lawyer for the past five consecutive years and nominated by clients as a New Jersey’s Best Lawyers for Families in 2019 and 2021, Sylvia’s greatest reward is in helping her clients find their better future.

WAYNE A. ALDREDGE, D.M.D. HOLMDEL PERIODONTICS & IMPLANT DENTISTRY 999 Palmer Ave., Ste. 1, Holmdel, NJ 07733 | 732.671.7100 | www.isaveteeth.com DR. WAYNE A. ALDREDGE was president of the American Academy of Periodontology--the first NJ president in the Academy’s 107 years. A great achievement for a Jersey boy. But for a child of dental-phobes, it’s a miracle. How did parents with a fear of dentists produce a highly respected periodontist? “My parents told us about their childhood dental visits which were bad enough to make them avoid dentists, which unfortunately led to health problems as adults. They were determined to make sure that my brothers and I stayed healthy with regular care.” His parents’ stories inspired Dr. Aldredge to pursue dentistry, and eventually periodontics. Because of his parents’ experience, he prioritizes patient comfort, using technology he trusts for the most pain-free treatment possible, and designing an office to set nervous minds at ease. He is also certified in SMART™ bone grafting, Pinhole™ gum grafting, and LANAP™ for laser gum disease treatment. Who has he won over? “My whole family. Childhood friends.” And most importantly, Mom and Dad.

{ POWER FOOD }
Grape Expectations You’d imagine this juicy, bite-sized fruit to be nutritious as well as refreshing. You’d be right. The grape is a crisp, refreshing treat that has nourished everyone from the emperors of yore to the oenophiles of today. The versatile fruit, from the genus Vitis (and in botanical terms considered a berry), is the basis not only for wine, but also for juices and jams and jellies and raisins. And by itself, snapped from its native bunch, it’s no mean pop-inyour-mouth snack. Grapes’ wide diversity, from the type you’d spot in vineyards to those you find in the produce section, makes them one of the most bountiful and widely available foods. Grapes as a standard crop date back to ancient civilizations. Records in China show grapes being used in fermented beverages as early as 7000 B.C. Iran has similar annals noting the residue from grapes in pots just as long ago. There are references to wine in classic mythology and religious literature. And it’s a common belief that raisins were discovered in ancient times as well when, as the crop was grown on vine after vine, some grapes were left on too long and eventually dried and wrinkled.
BUY/STORE/SERVE There’s thankfully not much mystery in how to attain grapes if one wishes. Grocery stores come to mind immediately, and any number of farmers’ markets may give you that organic edge you’re looking for. Look for fruit that are plump, smooth-skinned and brightly hued, without too many irregularities. Remember to wash only the grapes you’ll be able to eat in one sitting. In a tightly sealed plastic bag they’re usually good in the fridge for one to two weeks. Place them in the crisper for added humidity, which helps the grapes keep longer. Or freeze them if you plan to cook with them later, as long as you use them all in one go. Grapes are so open and inviting that rinsing them in the sink and plucking them right off the stem can do nicely.
But if you need more frills for your consumption, consider freezing them beforehand. Add a little powdered sugar if you’re looking to spoil yourself. Grapes make a great base for a fruit salad or a smoothie. Their sweet flavor, smooth texture and acidic nature enable them to pair with a number of dishes. Maybe a nice cheese plate. Or consider roasting your grapes for a crostini; it makes the juice that much sweeter. And they always do well in sauces, spreads and garnishes as sides to any meat dish. A few grapes go nicely with a flank steak or even roast pork. —Brian Kelley
POWER UP As one might expect from any fruit or berry, grapes’ health benefits are manifold. They contain antioxidants such as carotenoids and polyphenols that promote heart health and skin health. Some properties are said to help prevent the formation of free radicals, aiding the body in combating common types of cancer. That same action against free radicals—particularly by the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin—is thought to protect the eyes from retinal damage, making cataracts less likely. So if you’re looking to maintain good vision, keep an eye out for grapes. If vitamin supplements of K and C aren’t within reach, it might help to snag off a bunch of this natural supply of both. In fact, the potassium content in grapes is so concentrated it can help regulate blood pressure and also boost the body’s storage of electrolytes. They help you to flush out excess water and toxins that you naturally produce, in case you were feeling a little burdened by them lately. A 100-gram serving of your common grapes found in stores has about 70 calories, as well as about 20 milligrams of phosphorus, which is vital to promoting the strength of bones and teeth. We’re all looking to stay healthy these days, and consuming grapes—either red or green—is an easy and effective step in that direction. Not bad for a handy little fruit that’s 81 percent water!
DID YOU KNOW? The oldest living grapevine in North America is believed to be the “Mother Vine” in Manteo, North Carolina. Reputedly discovered in 1584, it yields grapes that produce a classic wine to this day. MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

“Savannah loves seeing pictures of Daddy catching fish, so Mommy and I decided to try to take her out to get her own fish picture. We left Keyport midafternoon and caught a few smaller striped bass—but as soon as this one was on the line, I knew it was a good one. When we got back to the dock, Savannah was too nervous to touch the fish so I held it. We tried really hard to get a good smile out of her, but I think she was busy taking it all in and actually seeing the fish in real life. It was an awesome day.” — Michael David Nosti and Savannah, Leonardo
