Bringing world-class care to more of Monmouth County.
At Monmouth Medical Center, we’re building more specialized care facilities and expanding our reach to create even better experiences for patients all across the county, like our Anne Vogel Family Care and Wellness Center. That means greater access to services such as maternal and perinatal care, innovative nutrition programs and the region’s only specialized pediatric care. And by investing in our people, new experts will be joining the doctors, nurses and staff you know and trust. Learn more at rwjbh.org/avfamilycare
Proud To Be Your Partner For Good Health
Throughout the last 130 years, Monmouth Medical Center has partnered with our communities to transform care for every person who calls Monmouth County home. From our new Anne Vogel Family Care & Wellness Center at the Monmouth Mall in Eatontown to our ongoing partnership with the City of Long Branch, we continue to advance our vision for the future of healthcare in our region.
In this issue of Monmouth Health & Life , we celebrate our official purchase of the former Fort Monmouth property in Tinton Falls, which will be the home of our Vogel Medical Campus. Construction of the state-of-the-art medical campus, which will begin this year, was made possible by a historic $50 million gift from local philanthropists Sheldon and the late Anne Vogel.
The development of this new campus is part of our mission to create an integrated outpatient network that helps patients maintain wellness and meet their care needs today and in the future. The cornerstone of the initial phase of the new Vogel Medical Campus will be a comprehensive cancer center in partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
This important partnership provides close-to-home access to the latest treatment options for cancer patients like Long Branch resident Jeff Prusan, who you will meet in our In Good Health pages. Mr. Prusan was kind enough to share his patient journey, and credits Monmouth Medical Center with providing not just advanced care, but comforting care that ensured he never felt alone in his cancer battle.
Our Vogel Medical Campus will leverage the latest medical space planning and technology advancements, making our world-class care more accessible to patients and their families. Most importantly, we will look to the Monmouth County community for feedback and insight as we move forward.
We are proud of the confidence placed in us to transform healthcare in Monmouth County. It is an honor to be on this journey with you.

A Home Is A Vision Of A Family’s Future
Call it an editor’s guilty pleasure. Reviewing designs for the Home & Garden Issue of Monmouth Health & Life each year gives me a sneak peek into the destinies of the homes we feature. These projects mark the melding of a designer’s talents with a family’s dreams. And home design is ultimately about more than floor plans, materials, color palettes and imaginatively sourced pieces; it’s about the good times that will be enjoyed in these spaces. It’s a bold bet on future happiness, and I get to experience it vicariously—and share it with you, our readers.
For example, I get to picture along with the owners of a Sea Bright beach house (page 28), the brighter social weekends that will now fill their summer following a recent renovation. Helping to refresh the spirit of the rooms (many of them hexagonal!) are a colorful backsplash with a custom marble hood in the kitchen, an elegant chandelier in the dining room and motorized shades to control light (and assure privacy) in the living room. And the knockout views of the Atlantic are better than ever.
Finishing a West Allenhurst home in a modern industrial farmhouse style—that was the challenge facing another designer (page 40). This is a doctor’s home, and the design pro provided not just what the doctor ordered, but what he didn’t realize would delight him—an iron-and-glass chandelier, for instance, that resembles a giant molecule.
Enjoy, too, the promotion of a Long Branch condominium from summer beach retreat to full-time home (page 34). In its kitchen a custom banquette now accommodates more hungry eaters, and a peninsula has been given a more kid-friendly height. Numbers of rooms and bathrooms have also been increased, making washing up from the beach a breeze. (Do you sense an agenda here? Four frequently visiting grandkids!)
Our homey theme continues in Buzz (page 14), where you’ll read how to recycle those hard-to-recycle items (electronics, household hazardous waste, tires), where to go to make Mom happy on Mother’s Day if she’s one of nine distinct Mom types, where Middletown meets Tinseltown, and how to make sure mosquitoes aren’t among your summer houseguests. Also, on page 16, meet Sabino and Lorenzo Portella of Oceanport, brothers who’ve made headlines aplenty in football and wrestling. (No, that’s not “respectively”—each is a phenom in both sports!)
Whether your home is your project this spring or you’ve vowed to explore the Monmouth County attractions you’re always too busy to check out, there’s bound to be something in this issue of Monmouth Health & Life for you. It’s our pleasure (not a guilty one this time) to present pages we hope will entertain you—and maybe offer an inspiration or two for your own future.

Are You Retirement Ready?
WELCOME
to the latest edition of Fiscal Fitness. It’s springtime at the Jersey Shore and March Madness is in full swing!
The stock and bond markets have been on a rollercoaster with the recent bank failures, bailouts and rising interest rates. Is it time to re-evaluate and make sure your financial plans are still on track?
TIMING IS EVERYTHING
The age at which you retire can have an enormous impact on your overall retirement income, so you will want to make sure you’ve considered your decision from every angle, including when to take social security, which accounts to tap into first, planning for rising health care costs, and of course, INFLATION.
HOW LONG SHOULD YOU PLAN FOR?
The average 65-year-old American can expect to live for more than 19 additional years1 Keep in mind life expectancy has increased at a steady pace over the years and is expected to continue increasing. The bottom line: it’s not unreasonable to plan for a retirement period that lasts for 30 or more years.
SEQUENCE OF RETURNS
Risk is one of the biggest risks retirees can face. In simplest terms, it’s the risk that market declines in the early years of retirement, along with ongoing withdrawals, could reduce the longevity of your nest egg. The goal is to avoid having to sell investments in a down market to meet your cash flow. Sounds simple, right? Not really. It takes proper planning, effective portfolio construction to provide cash flow needs while coordinating other sources of income such as social security benefits, pensions and annuities. Oh, and don’t forget about taxes.
SOLVING THE TAX PUZZLE
Many believe that their tax bracket will be lower in retirement, but that isn’t always the
Footnotes:
case. Pre-tax contributions in your IRA and employer sponsored retirement plans will be taxable at time of distribution. Working part-time? That could affect the taxation of your social security benefits. High income in retirement can also affect your Medicare premiums.
SOCIAL SECURITY
Although you can begin receiving benefits as early as age 62, your benefits will be permanently reduced by as much as 25-30% than if you wait until full retirement age (FRA 66-67). Divorced? Did you know you may qualify for Social Security benefits based on the earnings record of your ex-spouse even if they have remarried or passed away? Visit ssa.gov for more information.
401(K) & IRAS
If you plan to start using your 401(k) or traditional IRA savings before you turn 59½, a 10% early distribution penalty tax in addition to any regular income tax is due.2 (exceptions apply). Do you have other investments to draw from to avoid early distribution penalties?
During periods of uncertainty, it can be difficult to stay on track. Now may be the time to collaborate with an experienced and qualified CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Professional who can help put all the pieces of the puzzle together.

OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS
WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTY.
DRINK YOUR GREENS!
Did you eat right all winter? Never mind; it’s spring now—the perfect time to clear your system with something clean and natural. Juices and smoothies, that is, delicious drinks packed with fruits and veggies. Refreshing and filling, they can be ordered at:
• Juice Basin, 805 4th Ave., Asbury Park; juicebasin.com. Pick your potion at this Monmouth County gem; you can choose your smoothie not just by flavor, but also on whether you want it to soothe, nourish, energize or detox.
• The Juice House, 31 E. Main St., Freehold, 609.248.4648; thejuice house.com. Treat yourself to a chocolate peanut butter smoothie or cleanse your gut with the “De-puff” green juice. Either way, this place is founded by a registered nutritionist, so you can feel good about whatever you order here.
• Joseph & David Juice for Life, 6465 Rte. 9, Howell, 732.707.7123; joseph anddavid.com. Certified organic and kosher, this place has traditional smoothies, as well as protein options infused with flavored protein powders for when you need a little kick.
• The Herd Juicery, 80 Brighton Ave., Long Branch, 732.222.4818; theherdjuicery.com. Have you heard of The Herd? Its fresh-pressed juices are organic, plant-based and glutenfree, but even people who don’t share these priorities will enjoy the juices, superfood smoothies and bowls available here.
• Nourished. By Nature, 801 Main St., Belmar, 908.907.5893; iamnourished bynature.com. Somehow, ingredients that sound unappetizing, such as parsley and ginger root, just work when this juicery puts them all into a blender with other ingredients. Opt for a standard juice, a cleanse for your gut or a quick power shot; lemonades and nut milkshakes are on the menu too.
BUGS SAY, ‘DON’T READ THIS!’
Preparing your yard for spring and summer means more than getting ready to garden—this is the time to safeguard your space against mosquitoes too. These bloodsuckers typically thrive in moist environments when temperatures rise above 50 degrees, and they’re a nuisance when they start buzzing and biting. In New Jersey you may encounter three species: Asian tiger, cattail and white-footed woods. Each can deliver an itchy bite, and the Asian tiger (Zika and West Nile viruses) and cattail (West Nile) are known to transmit diseases. Monmouth County has a Mosquito Control Division that during peak mosquito season helps spray pesticides in areas where these pesky bugs tend to populate, but you can help the cause yourself too—by heeding these tips:
• Clean up your yard and remove anything that can hold water, such as unused pots and containers.
• Cover or overturn trailers, wheelbarrows, tools and children’s toys to avoid water pooling.
• Regularly clean gutters and drains so that water runs freely.
• Change water in pet drinking bowls, bird baths and vases at least weekly.
• Put sand around the base of potted plants to absorb pooling water.
• Keep swimming pools well maintained and chlorinated or securely covered if not in use.
• Keep fishponds clean with minimal vegetation around the edges.
• Keep lawns and gardens trimmed back to reduce the areas where mosquitoes rest.
PUPPY LOVE
If you’d rather let the pros handle the pests, keep these local mosquito exterminators in your phone’s “Favorites:”

The dogs: Ella and Daisy, 21/2-year-old cockapoos
The owner: Keri and Lou Moliterno of Middletown
The Moliterno family lost Misty, their cockapoo rescue from Monmouth County SPCA, in 2020. Misty made them fall in love with the breed, and during the pandemic the couple knew they wanted to bring home a Cockapoo puppy. They first adopted Ella and thought they’re be one and done, but two days later they adopted Daisy as well. These two pups are social butterflies, and enjoy hanging out at Bell Works; Alex’s Paw Park in Holmdel, their groomer, Bayshore Barks in Keansburg; and even at their vet, Happy Tails in Shrewsbury. “You can find them at any of the local dog-friendly events, so much that they have their own iCal Calendars!” says Keri. And even though they look more like mother and daughter, these two are in fact sisters. “Daisy is half the size of Ella and is the boss,” their owner notes. “The girls are always there for each other, play games and are experts in cuddling.” Want to see your pet featured in the pages of Monmouth Health & Life? PLEASE 9 KINDS OF MOMS
What is it about mothers that makes them so difficult to buy gifts for? Is it because they have everything, or because they claim they want nothing? While we figure that out, Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 14) is hurriedly approaching. So below are nine gifts—all available right here in Mom-mouth—for mothers, depending on what stirs their interest.
If you have a mom who…

• 10th Ave. Burrito in Belmar, which was featured on Guy Fieri’s Food Network series, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives! In the Feb. 10 episode, the famous chef got a sneak peek at the restaurant’s newest menu items. This is 10th Avenue Burrito’s second #DDD appearance; the first was in 2012, when Fieri called the restaurant’s pork mole “old school” and “the real deal.” The Food Network also touts 10th Ave. Burrito for its spicy chicken wings and burrito smothered in Chipotle cream sauce (left).
• The township of Freehold, which was featured in a February issue of The New York Times’ Real Estate section. The article calls Freehold “the sweet spot of Monmouth County,” lauding it as a desirable town with something for everyone and great schooling and shopping.
• Middletown resident George Kolber (right), whose Hollywood film, Miranda’s Victim, is getting critical acclaim after its February debut at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The film, produced by Kolber’s Navesink River Productions, is about the origin of the Miranda rights, and is packed with stars including Abigail Breslin, Ryan Phillippe and Luke Wilson. It was filmed last spring almost entirely in Middletown, Red Bank and at Monmouth University. Stay tuned for its official release date!
RECYCLE RESPONSIBLY
The best way to celebrate our planet is to take care of it, and there are several ways you can make a difference— starting at home. As you embark on spring cleaning, getting rid of old things in the basement and garage may be a priority, but remember to do so properly. Don’t toss electronics, household cleaners and hazardous waste materials into your regular trash for collection. Instead, determine how to dispose of them properly (either by curbside pickup or at an appropriate recycling facility). Monmouth residents may dispose of these materials at these sites:
Household hazardous waste may be left at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 3211 Shafto Rd., Tinton Falls, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments are no longer needed, and dropoff is free of charge to Monmouth residents; call 732.683.8686 with questions or concerns. Electronics will be picked up by most towns in the county; visit visitmonmouth.com or your borough’s site to confirm. Otherwise, drop off your used DVD players, computers, cell phones and such at the Monmouth County Reclamation Center at 6000 Asbury Ave., Tinton Falls, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday or 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays.
Tires can be dropped off at:
—Mazza Recycling Services, Tinton Falls, 732.922.9292
CULINARY CORNER
See ya round
Why have a pizza slice when you can have a pizza…round? Sally Boy’s is revolutionizing the concept of bread, sauce and cheese with its first brick-and-mortar location in Red Bank. Founded by pizza genius Sal Basile (perhaps you’ve heard of his other restaurants, Artichoke Basille’s Pizza in NYC?), Sally Boy’s has slices and “rounds” in tons of classic flavors, as well as calzones, Sicilian pies and subs. Follow the eatery on Instagram @sallyboyspizza for a behind-the-scenes look at how magic is worked in the kitchen.
• Sally Boy’s, 1 Broad St., Red Bank, 732.301.5222; sallyboys.com
Will we get lucky with ’Lucci?
You know us Jersey folk and our pizza; no such thing as too much. That’s why the former chef of Rosie’s Pizza in Point Pleasant Beach is expanding to our hood—Belmar, to be exact—with his own pizza restaurant called Pizzeria ’Lucci. Rosie’s has been touted as one of the best pizza joints at the shore—Barstool’s Dave Portnoy even gave its slice a solid 8.5. Though there isn’t much to share about ’Lucci just yet, consider us intrigued. The shop has plans to open this summer in the same plaza at 10th Avenue Burritos.
• Pizzeria ’Lucci, 811 Belmar Plz., Belmar, @pizzerialucci
A fusion of flavors
Our county has varied cuisines, and now we can add Portuguese halal food to the list. Tribos Peri Peri Chicken has opened in Manalapan (it already has other New Jersey locations in Hudson, Bergen, Middlesex and Essex counties), bringing to Monmouth flavorful fare that mingles the influences of Portugal, south Asia and southern Africa. Chicken is the specialty here (on the bone, in a wrap, on a sandwich or plated with rice); there are also vegetarian options, rice bowls and several sides to choose from, including corn on the cob and yuca fries.

Sibs On The Squad
The Portella brothers don’t look much alike, but they’re similarly ferocious sports phenoms.
Sabino: I try not to think about that and tell my teammates it’s just a wrestling match.
Lorenzo: It was a little different for me. I just started wrestling last year as a sophomore. No one really knew who I was, so if I lost, it wasn’t a big deal. But I ended up coming in seventh, so this year the pressure is on a bit more.
When it comes to athletics, what is your brother better at than you?
Lorenzo: I’m bigger, so he has the speed in wrestling. And for football, he’s a running back and I’m a lineman, so obviously he has more agility.
Sabino: I’m only 175 lbs., and he’s 285 and a heavyweight—he’s a tough dude. I’m pretty tough, but he’s got that part on me. For football, for his size and strength, nobody should be moving that fast.
What do you compete about outside of sports?
Sabino: Everything—like who gets the last thing on the table to eat. We just got two new puppies, and he’ll brag about the dogs liking him more.
What’s your training schedule like?
Lorenzo: We have football and wrestling, so that takes over every day. We lift at least once every day. We work out after school.
Do you have time for hobbies outside of sports?
Sabino: I know you’re expecting us to say, like, singing or dancing. [Laughs.] But it’s kind of hard to have a hobby when you’re doing wrestling and football. When we get that free time when we’re not training, it’s summer. That’s when we’re hanging out with friends and going to the beach.
Lorenzo: In my free time I play video games with my friends, I play spikeball at the beach or an open field.
Where in Monmouth do you hang out?
Raised in a football family in Oceanport, brothers Sabino and Lorenzo Portella were destined to be athletic all-stars. After years of public school, Sabino, 19, a senior, and Lorenzo, 17, a junior, both chose to play for Red Bank Catholic, where they compete in wrestling and football. Sabino is on a wrestling scholarship for college in the fall, and coach Joe Gallagher says Lorenzo has “a bunch of schools looking at him for both sports” after he graduates in ’24. Oh, and they get good grades too.
When did you two realize you wanted to pursue sports?
Lorenzo: We decided in middle school that we wanted to stick together [in high school] and play sports, and our cousin played football at Red Bank Catholic.
Sabino: We were bred into a football family, with my dad being an All-State defensive end and playing
at the college level. We also got introduced to wrestling at a young age. When I was 10, I was traveling around the country for wrestling tournaments. What’s been the most memorable moment in your athletic career thus far?
Lorenzo: For football, it was probably the All-American game with a few people from New Jersey. We went to Florida to compete. I was the captain on the team with the best players in the whole country.
Sabino: For football, [playing at] MetLife. It was unforgettable walking out of that tunnel. My junior year we won the state title as major underdogs; this year we fell a little short but it was a great, competitive game. For wrestling, it was competing in Atlantic City. This year, both Lorenzo and I finished on the podium in the individual wrestling championship. Do you feel a responsibility to live up to your titles—as MVP in Monmouth County (Sabino) and first team All-Division/All-Shore (Lorenzo)?
Sabino: Actually, we have a family-owned business with my grandpa called Enzo’s Pizza and Subs in Oceanport. My parents work there full-time. So we always get nice meals from there—the chicken parm and the pasta during football season, and chicken and salad during wrestling season. We help out with deliveries almost every day.
Sabino starts at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill this fall. How do you feel about going your separate ways?
Lorenzo: I’m excited for him to go to his dream school. Next year will be my first year playing football without him. I’m going to have to get used to it.
Sabino: I’m going to miss this place, to be honest. I’ll miss my brother but also this school and the community itself. I did my best to build their name up, and I couldn’t be happier to have been here for the last four years.

WORLD-CLASS CARE
Monmouth Medical Center named to Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals list.
Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) has been named to the 2023 Newsweek list of World’s Best Hospitals for the second consecutive year. MMC is one of just 414 U.S. hospitals on the list, which recognizes the best medical institutions across 27 countries. This prestigious award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider.
Developed using a complex methodology to ensure quality and validity, the Newsweek recognition provides a guide for patients and their families. Three data sources included recommendations from an international online survey sent to more than 80,000 doctors, hospital managers and healthcare professionals; patient satisfaction surveys; and key indicators, including patient safety, hygiene measures and quality of treatment. Additionally, the 2023 list was scored using a new category regarding the implementation status of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures that are compiled using standardized and validated questionnaires that evaluate how patients feel about their health.
In announcing the 2023 list, Newsweek said that institutions
on the list all share the quality of consistency—consistently attracting the best people, providing the best patient outcomes and implementing the most important new therapies and research. Newsweek notes that of all the hospitals in the world, relatively few can do all of these things year in and year out.
“Public recognitions such as this, and our standing as the region’s only hospital to consistently earn Leapfrog A’s for patient safety, truly reflect the hard work and unwavering commitment of the entire Monmouth Medical Center team,” says MMC and Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus President and CEO Eric Carney. “We are so proud to be listed among the world’s best hospitals and hope this designation is helpful to patients and families seeking the best care for themselves and loved ones.”

Health and Monmouth Medical Center, in partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New

Sea Girt resident Adela Beecher, middle, is undergoing treatment at Monmouth Medical Center for stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Pictured are her family members, from left: husband Jeff, daughters Skylar and Chelsea and sister Annette Andrew.
A NEW HOPE
Adela Beecher is an active senior. The 72-year-old Sea Girt resident goes out to dinner with family and regularly meets up with friends. When she has time, she’ll even ride a stationary bike at home and do some light weightlifting.
You’d never guess that she’s also battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
Life was completely different in summer 2022, when Beecher was rapidly losing weight and suffering from jaundice. She was barely eating and lacked any drive to get out of bed.
“I was turning yellow, and my primary doctor said it wasn’t looking good,” recalls Beecher.
That’s when Beecher’s daughter Chelsea, who works with Susan G. Komen, helped her get an appointment at Monmouth Medical Center with Seth Cohen, M.D., Regional Director of Oncology Services. A biopsy confirmed Beecher had stage 4 pancreatic cancer as well as two lesions on her liver.
“It was serious stage 4, and I felt like I didn’t have any options or a hopeful outlook,” she says. “I had that ‘woe-is-me’ feeling and was having a pity party.”
Because symptoms of pancreatic cancer rarely show themselves in early, more treatable stages, diagnoses are often made when the cancer has already spread. For the 52 percent of Americans who are diagnosed after the cancer has spread to a distant part of the body, the five-year survival rate is only 3 percent.
“It’s a frustrating disease because it’s
much more difficult to diagnose than other cancers, and we don’t have easier targets,” says Dr. Cohen.
But based on his patient’s condition, the doctor knew Beecher would be a good candidate for a clinical trial, so he discussed the option with her. Dr. Cohen, who has conducted more than 30 different clinical trials, outlined an aggressive treatment program using two different types of chemotherapy agents. By August, Beecher became the first local patient to enroll in this particular trial, ALTPANC: an alternating schedule of Folfirinox, a powerful chemo regimen used to target the cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, and the “less intense” gem Abraxane (gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel), which helps to shrink tumors and ease advanced pancreatic cancer symptoms.
Treatment doesn’t come without side effects, especially the “heavy chemo,” Beecher notes. It often leaves her feeling sick, sore and fatigued. But “she understands where she is,” says Dr. Cohen, who’s shared “wonderment” of his patient’s positive attitude throughout the process. Perhaps better than Beecher’s positivity is her improved physical health.
“She’s done miraculously from Day 1,” he says, “and we started seeing a change between two and four weeks after start-
ing treatment. She started putting on weight. She’s hitting the ball out of the park, and her blood levels are normal for now.” Initial tumor markers were 29,630 before therapy; the number had dwindled down to 39 after just seven months into the trial, Dr. Cohen says. By mid-March 2023, a CT scan revealed tumors had shrunk by 46 percent, Beecher adds.
“I was extremely lucky that my daughter helped me see Dr. Cohen, and he’s been a godsend ever since,” says Beecher, who also had the support of her husband, Jeffrey, her other grown daughter, Skylar, and her sister, Annette Andrew. She also recognizes the impact that Mary Danish, R.N., Clinical Research Nurse, as well as other MMC staff, nurses, dietitians and lab personnel had in her healthful turnaround. “Mary always helps me have a positive attitude. Once you have hope and a good attitude, everything changes.”
Beecher is still undergoing treatment and will likely continue with it for the long term—but her quality of life has returned.
“Even if I have to live with this, the treatment and Dr. Cohen have extended my life,” she says. “Today, I went to the supermarket, and I go out with friends. And I’m going to keep my future plans; I’ll go to my daughter’s wedding this fall and I will meet my grandchildren.”

A MESSAGE OF HOPE
At just 23 weeks pregnant on Nov. 22, 2017, Amanda Durborow went into premature labor and delivered twins Colbie Mae and Bennett Mark, each weighing just over 1 pound, at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC). Unfortunately, Bennett died two days after his birth. Though Colbie survived, she spent her first five months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and survived bilateral brain bleeds, several shunt revisions to remove fluid in her brain, six brain surgeries and one eye surgery.
Today, however, Colbie is 5 years old and blossoming. Amanda credits MMC for her daughter’s early development—specifically the care received at the NICU at The Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Foundation Regional Newborn Center (RNC) at The Unterberg Children’s Hospital. Though she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Colbie enjoys going to physical therapy at Children’s Specialized Hospital and is as sharp as a tack, proud mom says.
At MMC, Colbie’s story is shared as a message of hope for other parents of fragile newborns through the hospital’s Hall of Hope, which leads from Labor and Delivery to the NICU. As new parents walk down the corridor, they can read messages of encouragement from parents whose babies, like Colbie, have survived and are now thriving.
Amanda also made a lasting impact at the NICU when she launched The NICU Book Club, providing books for parents to read aloud to their children during their stay just as she and her husband did nightly during Colbie’s stay.

SHORE-WORTHY?
Making a Sea Bright house a truly bright companion to the sea meant, for one thing, overcoming the kitchen’s hex.

Nobody’s blaming the ocean. Its beachy aesthetic was spot on, but the Sea Bright house itself was a hectic hodgepodge that didn’t seem to know where it was sitting. Then, in early 2021, Christina Kim, owner and creative director of a Manasquan-based interior design firm, was tasked with bringing the serenity of the Shore into several rooms of the home.
“The owners looked to us to create a clean, warm modern beach house that reflected the beautiful surroundings,” she says, explaining that the kitchen was the primary focus of the yearlong project, while other areas also needed light renovation and updates. But the job wasn’t as simple as adding a splash of new paint and seashells. The unusual architecture of each room presented a challenge to Kim and her team.
“Many of the rooms were hexagonal,” she says. “Creating a cohesive design throughout the home took some creativity. The kitchen and main dining area in particular needed a transformation. I can confirm that hexagonal kitchens are not straightforward.”
The kitchen, in fact, required a total overhaul. “It was an absolute gut, and we took it down to the studs,” says Kim. As soon as the slate was cleaned, however, the designer planned a space to serve the homeowners’ socializing lifestyle, which emphasized hosting friends and family during summer weekends.
She created ideal areas for meal preparation and cooking, sourcing perfect slabs of honed Danby marble from PMI International Stone in Marlboro for the center island and countertops. The showstoppers of the space, however, are the bright backsplash and range hood. Working with Town and Country Design Studio in Red Bank, the design team navigated the kitchen’s geometry and selected a distinct tile “to

ground the space.”
“It was difficult to create a focal point, which is why we selected a backsplash with pattern and color,” Kim says. Next she designed a custom marble hood—fabricated by Oceana Designs—that wouldn’t distract from the backsplash but instead added “a layer of luxe while keeping it soft.”
In the adjacent dining area, a large white oak table with seating for eight sits beneath a subtly elegant chandelier from Currey and Co. “I love this chandelier for this room,” she says, “because we needed a fixture with generous width to take up visual space, but we also did not want to block the view.”
And that magnificent vista is front and center in the oceanfacing living room, another six-sided space. Though it didn’t require a total renovation, this space did need special consideration. “A hexagonal room forces you to choose pieces that can float in a room and be lovely on all sides,” says Kim. “There’s not a single piece of furniture up against the wall in these rooms.”
Using a light neutral base, the design team selected low-profile, lounge-type seating for the living area. Its location on the second floor gives the homeowners and their guests an expansive view of the ocean and the sky, which even on a cloudy day creates a feeling akin to staring at a landscape painting. Motorized woven shades control the light that filters through each of the 18 windows—and assure privacy.
“They envisioned entertaining late into the evening and filling the room with friends and music,” Kim says. And if they ever tire of their charming interior (but who would?), well, the beach is still there too.
This page: A Currey & Company chandelier in the dining room is wide enough to take visual space and minimalist enough that it doesn’t block the view. Opposite page: Honed Danby marble from PMI International Stone in Marlboro is found throughout the kitchen, from countertops to the custom hood.

THEIR LONG BRANCH FUTURE
Full of angles and wasted space, a family’s beach-house condominium needed a redesign to rate becoming a year-round home.

Before a North Jersey couple made this Long Branch condo their yearround home, designer Sheila Rich came in and worked her magic, giving her clients a spacious, modern design that could accommodate their two children and four grandchildren. One key to a Shore house with kids is washable fabrics, as seen on the custom chairs and this microfiber motorized sofa by Cashmere Collection. Bonus: Each seat reclines.

36 MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM APRIL/MAY 2023
Designer Sheila Rich chose blue penny round tiles across the back kitchen wall and above the stove to add visual interest.
The owners of a Long Branch condominium had long-term goals for it: They’d eventually sell their house in North Jersey and live at this Shore home full-time. But to make that feasible, the space needed some reconfiguring for greater practicality, as the couple’s two kids and four grandkids would be spending a lot of time there.
“There was a lot of wasted space, a lot of angles,” says Monmouth Beach-based Sheila Rich, the designer hired for the job. “Some rooms were unnecessarily large and some were small, so the goal was to update the space and use it to the best of our ability.”
That took some serious creativity. With the help of Catherine Franco Architects of Atlantic Highlands, Rich and her team maximized the kitchen space by reconfiguring the cabinets,
adding a double oven and making the peninsula counter height instead of bar height so that it would be more kid-friendly. The “Blue Labradorite” countertop stone, with its appealing teal hue and glistening opals, served as the inspiration for the living room’s color scheme. “I like when each room has its own personality but it’s part of the whole,” Rich says. The custom chairs, all in durable fabrics, pull out the color from the stone.
Another smart design choice was a custom banquette, made by J & H Dinettes in Freehold, which is situated across the back wall in the dining area. A space saver, it accommodates more hungry family members. Rich chose a wide pedestal table without legs so that more chairs could be added as needed. In the banquette alcove is a low-maintenance, contract vinyl wallpaper by Momentum that stands up to kids’ messes
37 MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM APRIL/MAY 2023 { PERSONAL SPACE }
and gives the room a shimmery pop. (Rich chose the same wallpaper for the entryway.)
Elsewhere, the team turned an oversized master bathroom into two separate, nice-sized ones, each with its own shower and vanity. A large closet in the hallway was converted into a powder room; the condo now has three toilets and three showers, which makes washing up from the beach a breeze. Meanwhile, off the master bedroom, Rich designed what she calls a “dual space” with movable walls—its trundle bed and futon can easily sleep all four grandkids, and “the desk area can flip to go up against the wall when the kids aren’t there.”
The man of the house loves blue, so Rich incorporated that
hue into an accent wall in the master. She chose a textured, washable wall covering by Momentum that sits nicely against the headboard, and installed a small reading light on either side of the king-sized bed above the couple’s pre-existing night tables. The master bathroom, slightly smaller yet more luxurious than it was before, features a double vanity, a large shower with a seat and textured river rock on the floor to prevent slippage.
“We made creative use of this space,” Rich says, “and checked off their whole wish list.”
The ultimate test? At presstime, the homeowners were in the process of selling their primary home up north and getting ready to move to Long Branch full-time.
38 MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM APRIL/MAY 2023 { PERSONAL SPACE }
In a condo like this one, says Rich, you need to raise the floor to add in plumbing for a bathroom, which explains the step-in shower in this master bathroom. The gray penny tile in the bathroom recalls the kitchen’s blue penny tile, while the floor tile by the double vanity matches the tile used on the shower walls.

An original leaded-glass window became a kitchen highlight flanked by windows trimmed in gray to look seamless with drape-free blinds, says designer Nancy Mikulich, who in this West Allenhurst home added a Hekman Furniture cabinet with circles and tribal-like carving for a Bohemian aura.
{ PERSONAL SPACE } MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM 41 APRIL/MAY 2023
Sometimes interior designers get the luxury of a clean slate with no challenges to work around. But often they don’t, and in these cases their skill in completing judiciously what’s already begun can determine whether the project results in harmony or design chaos.
That was the case with an older, three-bedroom, Tudor-style home in West Allenhurst that a doctor bought as a fixer-upper. A builder first tackled the gut-job renovation, but then Nancy Mikulich, owner of Oasis Home Designs, was called upon in 2019 to complete the home in a modern industrial farmhouse style.
“My job was to interpret what the owner said he was looking for, but then also work off the vibe of the house,” she says. Besides a masculine aesthetic, Mikulich discerned that he wanted a hint of Europe—“so I was trying to deliver on a modern industrial farmhouse, but with a very artful perspective.” All this was right before the COVID lockdown with its supply-chain issues.
That the owner was a doctor factored into Mikulich’s choices. In the kitchen an iron-andglass chandelier by Renwil above the table “reminded me of a sculpture of a molecule,” says Mikulich, describing it as a deconstruction of the island’s contemporary pendants. “He is very science-driven, and I thought it would ap-
peal to him—and it did.”
Other sculptural elements are the cerused wood chairs from Universal Furniture at the table and the island chairs by Arteriors of oversized rattan and wood, she says, admiring their “beautiful form as a unit.” Also art-like, the table marries a hammered bronze fluted base with a cerused oak top.
Some existing features became a springboard for design, such as the wide-plank oak flooring—a “really good palette” for inspiration—and the dark island base, which “told me he wanted a real monochromatic design,” she says. The farmhouse-style cabinetry (done by the builder) fit a doctor’s persona: functional and clean. Together, these features invited a contrast-driven black, white and gray aesthetic.
In the living room, a dark fireplace with an Aztec tile design was “definitely an inspiration for the overall space,” but the homeowner’s white sofas posed a challenge. Mikulich achieved unity for the space with a custom area rug in a blackand-white textured pattern that “pulled the whole seating area together.”
Additionally, the caramel leather chair from Moe’s Home Collection with its earthy influence and a wood trunk worked to take the
emphasis off the sofas and achieve harmony. Of the smokey-glass wall sconces, says the designer: “I like how these hang down like lanterns.”
In contrast to the living room’s pale gray walls, the den glammed it up a bit with York fabric wallpaper with a slight gold texture. The geometric deconstructed mirror from Uttermost reflects light from the modern chandelier by Hudson Valley, while the abstract shag rug from Surya creates what Mikulich calls a “Mad Men kind of mid-century feel” with pops of turquoise and gold.
Because round objects can convey space, Mikulich chose an egg chair (Sarreid) in faux shearling and introduced a velvet sofa (Sunpan) while prioritizing textures. The anchor is a terrazzo table with speckles reflecting the neutral palette.
Not only lighting but unity flows from the floor lamp, which owes its industrial vibe to iron and glass just like the island pendants, which are visible from the den. When the homeowner has parties, says the designer, “he uses both rooms at the same time,” so the connection was key.
Like a cherry and icing on a scrumptious cake, this West Allenhurst home needed the wow of Mikulich’s grand finale of design.
MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM 42 APRIL/MAY 2023
This page: The deep hues of the island base opened the door to darker colors in a contrast-rich palette. Opposite page: The fireplace served as another inspiration, not only for its dark tones but also for its Aztec-like vibe. Reflections from a deconstructed mirror help conquer the den’s scarcity of light.

A DELIGHT OF EARTHLY
Well-manicured horticultural
preserves can be a treat for the senses and a lift for the spirits. Here are five that aren’t far.
We’re blessed when it comes to gardens in our part of the Garden State. Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown and Holmdel’s Shaw Arboretum are among Jersey’s great outdoor spaces, and even your own backyard may offer a bountiful display of sprigs and blooms. Other places to take in botanical beauty? They’re nearby too; for instance, there’s:
VAN VLECK HOUSE & GARDENS, MONTCLAIR.
Drive time from Monmouth: 1 hour, 5 minutes.
A former private estate, this public garden is an oasis in the middle of busy Montclair. The 5.8-acre site, operated by nonprofit Montclair Foundation, showcases azaleas, rhododendrons and other hybrids, many of them named after Van Vleck family members. One of the most visited spots in the garden is a Chinese wisteria, dating back to 1939, that is climbing one of the pillars of the picturesque Van Vleck House.
Things to do: To see more beauty (manmade and natural), the Montclair Art Museum and Kip’s Castle are a short walk from the garden. The 15-acre Edgemont Memorial Park is a picturesque site maintained by the township’s parks department. Also minutes away is downtown Montclair, home to a wide variety of retailers, coffee shops, casual eateries and fancy restaurants.
Information: montclairfoundation.org
NEW JERSEY BOTANICAL GARDEN, RINGWOOD.
Drive time from Monmouth: 1 hour, 30 minutes.
This 96-acre garden within the majestic Ramapo Mountains is part of Ringwood State Park. The property is divided into a dozen featured gardens, including Crab Apple Allée (weather permitting, it’ll be in full bloom in late April to early May) and Magnolia Walk. Easy strolls in any direction will lead to a variety of annuals, wildflowers, ponds, fountains and other landscape features. Tours of the historic Skylands Manor House, often used as a wedding venue, are offered on select days.
Things to do: There are several hiking trails in hundreds of acres that surround the garden. For an easy hike with a memorable vista and landmarks, follow the short trail to Warm Puppy Rock. Shepherd Lake Boathouse is nearby and offers canoe and kayak rentals, while the Thunder Mountain Trap and Skeet center is open for those wanting a little target practice. Information: njbg.org

GARDENS
NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN, THE BRONX, N.Y.
Drive time from Monmouth: 1 hour, 30 minutes.
This 250-acre New York City institution is the largest garden in any U.S. city, with over 1 million plants. Come this month for the annual Orchid Show, open through April 23. It’s considered one of NYBG’s two must-see events (the other is the winter train show) and this year features artist Lily Kwong’s meditative design. But there’s much more to see yearround, including the Victorian-style glass house that serves 11 distinct plant habitats. Things to do: NYBG isn’t the only place to see pretty plants. Also worth seeing are Wave Hill, a 28-acre botanical garden in The Bronx, and the 52-acre Brooklyn Botanic Garden, located at Prospect Park. If you don’t want to eat in the NYBG, some of the best Italian eateries as well as the Arthur Avenue market are minutes away in the Belmont section of The Bronx.
Information: nybg.org
BARTLETT ARBORETUM AND GARDENS, STAMFORD, CONN.
Drive time from Monmouth: 2 hours. Enjoy peace and tranquility at this 93-acre park in southwest Connecticut. Hundreds of tree and plant species fill 13 gardens, such as the Sensory Garden, where visitors can smell, hear and taste (go ahead and sample the ripe snap peas, cherry tomatoes and herbs) and the Alice Smith Fern Allée, home to more than 60 varieties of ferns. The 9/11 Memorial Archway is a solemn location for reflection and meditation.
Things to do: Museums and nature are at the forefront of Stamford tourism, with the Stamford Museum and Cove Island Park along the Long Island Sound two of the most visited locations in the city. The Harbor Point community is a destination for retail and dining, with several Connecticut-style pizzerias, steakhouses and seafood restaurants to whet your appetite.
Information: bartlettarboretum.org
LONGWOOD GARDENS, KENNETT SQUARE, PA.
Drive time from Monmouth: 1 hour, 40 minutes.
Widely considered one of the world’s great gardens, this 1,077-acre site is home to more than 9,000 species and varieties of plants. Two dozen gardens, packed with lush vegetation, are easy to walk and family-friendly. Pro tip: Clear your phone’s memory so you have plenty of space to take photos at the Flower Garden Walk & Compartment Gardens and the Green Wall. Those who visit on the evening of April 22 will be treated to a special musical Earth Day program with German songs. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait until next year if you’re hoping to visit the Cascade Garden—this section is closed for 2023.
Things to do: Just outside of the garden in the town’s historic district are some of Brandywine Valley’s top restaurants, jewelers, clothiers and other stores. More shopping and dining is a 20-minute drive across the border in Wilmington, Delaware.

TOP REAL ESTATE AGENTS
MONMOUTH COUNTY’S 2023
MONMOUTH COUNTY IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST SEASONED AND TALENTED REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS IN THE COUNTRY. To help readers find the best agents to work with, Monmouth Health & Life contracted DataJoe Research of Boulder, Colorado to facilitate a multi-faceted research campaign. It consisted of an online survey delivered directly to agents across Monmouth County via email as well as internet research. In the survey, real estate agents were asked to provide sales volume ranges and also nominate their peers. In the Internet campaign, DataJoe consulted a variety of websites to build richer knowledge of individual licensed real estate agents across the county.
DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at the time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If they were not able to find evidence of a real estate agent’s current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that real estate agent was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied results to Monmouth Health & Life for final review.
We recognize that there are many good real estate agents who are not shown on the representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the county.

Kerrin “Kerry” O’Brien
O’Brien Realty
KERRY O’BRIEN IS ONE OF MONMOUTH COUNTY’S TOP PRODUCERS and has spent years ensuring that the family firm she founded with her partner, Tammy, became synonymous with above-and-beyond customer service and results. She’s been a successful broker for many years and has achieved the Platinum certification of New Jersey Realtors’ Circle of Excellence Sales Award several years in a row.
Whether for a client or colleague, Kerry is never too busy for consultation and loves to lend her extensive knowledge base to anyone it can help. She’s also always working to better leverage the resources and reach of O’Brien Realty for her clients—utilizing the latest technology to showcase seller homes and give buyers a better feel for prospective properties.
Additionally, virtual offices in New York and Florida make relocations to and from popular destinations easier.
Buyers and sellers may be at odds around the negotiating table, but Kerry understands the value of ensuring everyone feels respected. Keeping both parties on great terms makes her clients’ transitions easier and has given the O’Brien name a reputation for being easy to work with among other New Jersey realtors. One buyer in Monmouth Beach agrees: “I was unlucky enough to be bidding against a buyer Kerry represented. And smart enough to have Kerry represent me shortly thereafter. Nobody knows the area better. She’s savvy, gives good advice, has imagination, is smart, and worked hard for us. And in the process, became a friend to boot.”

The O’Brien Realty mantra is trust, loyalty, and respect. Embodying those principles has taken them from a small “mom and mom” operation to a major player in residential, multi-unit and commercial real estate with five offices and over 200 agents in less than ten years. While their family might be a lot larger now, Kerry insists that nothing has changed in the way they approach their work: “It’s always been a labor of love. The team and I are serving many more people than when I started out, but it’s all built on the same work ethic, professionalism, and client-first attitude.”
Other clients see that and acknowledge how Kerry’s commitment to delivering sought-after outcomes is unmatched. One seller in Rumson says, “I believe that Kerry stands high above other local agents and real estate companies. While others talk, she brings results. She managed to find her own buyer for a high-end waterfront property. She accommodated negotiations and helped with every step of the selling process. We appreciate her help and professionalism.”
Born and raised in Monmouth Beach, Kerry moved back to her beloved beach town to grow her family and her business. In addition to the existing virtual offices in New York and Florida, Kerry will open a new virtual office in Tennessee in Summer of 2023. She recently received her
Title License and will open the O’Brien Title Company. The latest venture will help O’Brien Realty strengthen its goal of top-of-the-line customer service from start to finish.
Kerry cares about her community—she sits on the Board of Trustees for Monmouth Medical and is a board member of the Visiting Nurse Association. In her free time, she is dedicated to doing philanthropic work for Shore to Help, SPCA, and other local charities.

Bernadette Barnett
IN AN INDUSTRY WHERE CAREERS ARE BUILT on word-of-mouth and results, Bernadette Barnett has been flourishing for over twenty years. “The bottom line,” she says, “is that I’m a hard worker dedicated to doing the best job possible for my clients. I love what I do, and my clients trust me.”
Bernadette is a four-time top producer at Heritage House Sotheby’s International Realty and an 11-time Platinum New Jersey Realtors Circle of Excellence Sales Award winner. Recognized as one of 2022 Real Trends America’s Best Real Estate Professionals in New Jersey, it would be easy to assume that Bernadette’s sales and marketing acumen have led her to be frequently among the top one percent of realtors in Monmouth County. She believes her success is due equally to the relationships that she develops with her clients by being a hardworking advocate for their best interests.
Before she became a real estate agent, Bernadette relocated many times, living in New York, Connecticut, California, and Hong Kong before coming back to New Jersey. She experienced first-hand how important it is to partner with a realtor who is an excellent listener and communicator, and is willing to go the extra mile to make sure you find the right home. Those moves also showed her what it’s like to have to make a housing decision over the course of a single weekend—something that has become commonplace in today’s real estate market.
“The current market has been a challenge for buyers and sellers,” says Bernadette. “It’s my responsibility to guide both in making prompt, educated decisions that lead to the best outcome for them. Trust is paramount in my relationships with both buyers and sellers.”

BESPOKE SERVICE, hands-on advocacy and 25 years of experience; that’s the foundation of what Ranka brings to all of her clients’ real estate journeys. In line with her promise to provide personalized attention to each and every buyer and seller she represents, Ranka doesn’t work behind a team.
Operating independently means that Ranka gets to be fully hands-on with what she loves most about her job—building relationships and helping her neighbors. No matter what stage of the process they’re in, when a client needs something, Ranka answers the call and takes care of it herself. She loves facing and resolving the day-to-day challenges that are inherent in her line of work.
“She was outstanding,” says one former client, Alex. “Ranka is a true advocate. She advised us on every aspect of each transaction, from home inspection and certificate of occupancy to mortgage and closing.
She was present at all of the showings and insightful on each potential buyer. When it came to buying our new home, Ranka knew the market extremely well and provided candid observations on all the houses we viewed. Hands down the best realtor we’ve ever worked with.”
Over her 20+ years in real estate, Ranka has achieved Gold, Silver, and Bronze certification for the New Jersey Realtors’ Circle of Excellence Sales Award. Beyond her work ethic, personal approach, and extensive knowledge base, Ranka says she relies on her intuition and expert interpersonal skills to present the best options to buyers and highlight the intangible aspects of sellers’ homes. “Every house has a story,” she says, “and people are unique. You need to look past what a property has on paper and see what it has to offer real people living there. I consider that part of ‘knowing the market.’ It’s not just recalling facts and figures and spotting trends.”

Fill Up On Fun
The Loaded Spoon seems to have checked off all the boxes as a venue for social gatherings. The swanky new eatery opened this spring in between Freehold’s entertainment hub iPlay America and TopGolf Swing Suite, making it a convenient dining option for families, friends or co-workers who are out on the town.
A friend and I visited about two weeks after The Loaded Spoon’s debut, hoping the proverbial dust from the highly celebrated grand opening had settled and any kinks were ironed out. Upon arrival, we were guided to the rear bar and dining area, passing modern décor and several Instagram-friendly spaces. There was an immediate upscale-cocktail-bar vibe: Colored lights filled every corner, while fancy drinks were delivered seemingly to every table.
Naturally, we started with the drinks menu, which featured several beer and wine options (by the glass or bottle) and a dazzling array of craft cocktails and “Smoke Shows”—virgin beverages that will “smoke” when alcohol (ordered separately) is added. The mixologists here don’t disappoint, and their creativity and skill were showcased in our two drinks: What’s Up Doc? (with cucumber-mint vodka and carrot) and the sweet-and-sour Let’s Spoon (gin, raspberry liqueur and jam).
As we sipped drinks and noshed on complimentary crackers and ricotta, our server delivered a pair of appetizers. We couldn’t help but snap a few photos of the dishes when they arrived, as both were artfully plated and mouthwatering. Once phones were put away, I took a big bite out of the chicken lollipops, three Parmigiano Reggianocrusted drumsticks. Despite the remarkable presentation, the chicken itself was a tad bland—fortunately the pieces could be dipped into the accompanying tomato puree and basil oil for more flavor.
The G.T.O. (garlic toast overload) also had a mild flavor. This app includes sides of eggplant caponata, ricotta and garlic confit— spreadable cloves that have been cooked down for a mellow pungency. It’s a fun dish to share, and appropriate if you want to avoid a strong garlic taste on your tongue.
A lengthy list of main dishes included salad, pasta, steak and seafood selections, many of them gluten-free and vegan-friendly. A proud meat eater, I had the pork trio—a entrée-sized sampler with pork tenderloin, chorizo hash and bacon honey vinaigrette. After slicing and taking a forkful of the tenderloin, I was taken aback by the somewhat flat flavor. Like the chicken appetizer, the pork by itself was lackluster; however, taste buds perked up when pieces were combined with the other elements on the plate. I’m not certain how the tenderloin would have paired with a side order of hot honey Brussels sprouts, which arrived as I was finishing the entrée.
On the other hand, my friend’s lobster baked fusilli was oozing with flavor—and Gruyère béchamel. Each bite of the al dente pasta included a satisfying amount of cheese and poached lobster, making for a pleasant surprise and a heartwarming dish.
Portion sizes are very generous, so it’s easy to fill up at The Loaded Spoon—and that’s exactly what we did. That, unfortunately, left us with no room for the restaurant’s over-the-top desserts. We did vow to return to try the extravagant sweets and more specialty cocktails, which seemed worth the price (maybe even the $120 “Megatron” dessert with 24 scoops of ice cream!). Until then, it’s off to iPlay for some arcade games.

“This photo is of my husband, Mike, and our 2-year-old daughter, Harper. We live in Austin, Texas, but my husband grew up in Holmdel and his parents still live there, so we visit several times a year. On this visit, we were shocked to find something as incredible as Deep Cut Gardens within a 10-15 minute drive from my in-laws. We loved showing Harper all the trees, flowers, butterflies and bees—the grounds were so beautiful and special. I love seeing my husband taking such care with our daughter to explore nature and share his hometown with her.”
