Proud to Provide the Best Care Proud to be named one of the World’s Best Hospitals One of just 33 U.S. hospitals named to Newsweek’s 2022 World’s Best Hospitals’ list. Monmouth Medical Center (MMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, is among 33 U.S. hospitals and 2,200 around the world named to Newsweek’s Best Hospitals. This prestigious award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The Newsweek list is meant to identify quality care and provide a guide for patients and their families. We are proud to be counted among the world's leading hospitals recognized for their continued ability to deliver the highest-quality patient care and conduct critical medical research.
It is with great pride that I share the news that Monmouth Medical Center is one of 33 U.S. hospitals to be named to Newsweek’s 2022 World’s Best Hospitals’ list. The Newsweek World’s Best Hospitals’ list was developed using a complex methodology to ensure quality and validity. Three data sources included recommendations from an international online survey sent to more than 80,000 doctors, hospital managers and healthcare professionals; patient satisfaction surveys; and key indicators, including patient safety, hygiene measures and quality of treatment. According to the Newsweek report, the world’s leading hospitals set themselves apart with a continued ability to deliver the highest-quality patient care and conduct critical medical research even as they focused on battling COVID-19. Hospitals faring best throughout the pandemic learned to work faster by communicating better, breaking down internal silos and innovating. Empowered by the challenges of the past two years, our MMC Heroes remained dedicated to providing excellent care and making a true impact on our community. We were able to remain strong largely because of our Heroes’ continual new approaches to care and making care better, while maintaining our High Reliability Organization commitment to the very highest safety standards. We are so proud to be listed among the world’s best hospitals and hope this designation is helpful to patients and families seeking the best care for themselves and loved ones. This recognition comes on the heels of our recognition as a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group for a third time. Announced in December, the Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive. These public recognitions are important milestones that truly reflect the hard work and commitment of the entire MMC team.

A DVERTI S EMENT
Are You Ready? W
ELCOME to the latest edition of Fiscal Fitness. It’s spring- time at the Jersey Shore and March Madness is just beginning! The stock market has been on a rollercoaster, to say the least, and many have been caught off guard after such a strong performance in 2021. Is it time to re-evaluate and make sure your financial and retirement plans are still on track? TIMING IS EVERYTHING The age at which you retire can have an enormous impact on your overall retirement income, so you will want to make sure you’ve considered your decision from every angle, including when to take social security, which accounts to tap into first, planning for rising health care costs, and of course, INFLATION. HOW LONG SHOULD YOU PLAN FOR? The average 65-year-old American can expect to live for more than 19 additional years1. Keep in mind life expectancy has increased at a steady pace over the years and is expected to continue increasing. The bottom line: it’s not unreasonable to plan for a retirement period that lasts for 30 or more years. “SEQUENCE OF RETURNS” Risk is one of the biggest risks retirees can face. In simplest terms, it’s the order, or sequence of investment returns over time, as you draw from your portfolio. The goal is to avoid having to sell investments in a down market to meet your cash flow needs. Sounds simple, right? Not really. It takes proper planning, effective portfolio construction to provide cash flow needs while coordinating other sources of income such as social security benefits, pensions and annuities. Oh, and don’t forget about taxes. SOLVING THE TAX PUZZLE Many believe that their tax bracket will be lower in retirement, but that isn’t always
the case. Pre-tax contributions in your IRA and employer sponsored retirement plans will be taxable at time of distribution. Working part-time? That could affect the taxation of your social security benefits. High income in retirement can also affect your Medicare premiums. SOCIAL SECURITY Although you can begin receiving benefits as early as age 62, your benefits will be permanently reduced by as much as 25-30% than if you wait until full retirement age (FRA 66-67). DIVORCE complicates Social Security, as marriage length and age benefits are claimed will affect amounts. On top of that, the rules are different for survivor benefits. The Bottom line: Call the Social Security Administration or visit ssa.gov 401(K) & IRAS If you plan to start using your 401(k) or traditional IRA savings before you turn 59½, a 10% early distribution penalty tax in addition to any regular income tax is due.2 (exceptions apply). Do you have other investments to draw from to avoid early distribution penalties? During periods of uncertainty, it can be difficult to stay on track. Now may be the time to collaborate with an experienced and qualified CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Professional who can help put all the pieces of the puzzle together.

Take the (Design) Plunge
The consultative approach to real estate EDUCATING. GUIDING. NEVER PRESSURING.
If you’re like many of us, perfection is on your “to-do” list. “If I can only get past these immediate distractions,” you think, “I’ll be able to turn my full attention to (fill in the blank) and really do it up right.” Such is our great ambition for that ideal tomorrow that keeps us from acting today. So it is, sometimes, with home renovation. But there are times when it makes sense to take the plunge. Yes, you have a design vision for your whole house, and eventually you’ll fulfill that vision. For now, though, you can take on a single room and make it a dazzler. In “Ready For Visitors” on page 30, you’ll see how a young couple created a kitchen in their West Long Branch colonial that not only meets their day-today needs, but also serves as entertainment central when large groups of friends and family stop by. Mind you, I’m not taking a stand against perfection, certainly not here in Monmouth Health & Life’s Home Issue. We aim to inspire. And there are times, I’ll admit, when one’s ambition grows as a project takes shape. Consider what a Shrewsbury designer did for a North Jersey husband and wife in their home. He wanted a billiards room, and she desired an area for formal dining—the problem was the house was short on space. With an imaginative design and thoughtful furnishings, as you’ll read in “1 Room Leads 2 Lives” on page 34, the couple’s wishes came true. But the fact is that, while “dream” may be the most overused word in home design, you can’t spend your whole life dreaming. You have to start sometime, somewhere. Your starting point can be something as humble as a floor covering. In “Do Rugs Right” on page 38, we present practical tips from four top interior designers on deploying rugs in ways that will both delight the eyes and stand up to years of foot traffic. Speaking of being practical, our Home Issue has other ideas to spruce up your space if a renovation isn’t quite in the cards. For example, this month’s Home Front (pages 20 and 22) is a double-feature, showing off beautiful tufted furniture and planter pots that can bring any room to life. Today may be the day you spring into action to achieve the home you really deserve. And if the pages of this issue can give you ideas, we figure that fits our mission. Perfectly.

MAKE A SPLASH!
If you vowed to get on the water more this year, it’s time to get started. Paddling season kicks off this month, with boating centers opening their doors. Here’s where Jersey Shore paddlers can test the waters before summer officially begins: • Oceanport Paddle Club, 10 Riverside Ave., Oceanport; 1 Beachway Ave., Keansburg. Both locations offer rentals, instructions, tours, standup paddle (SUP) boards, SUP yoga and kayaking fun for the whole family. Info: oceanportpaddleclub.com • Turkey Swamp Park, 200 Georgia Rd., Freehold. Rent a kayak, canoe or paddleboat and take the waters within this 1,180-acre park. Boat rentals are available weekends only from May 1 through Father’s Day, then daily from Father’s Day through Labor Day. Info: monmouthcountyparks.com • Paddle Out, 537 E. Main St., Manasquan. Paddleboards, single kayaks and tandem kayaks (for two) are available for rent here, in addition to guided tours with professional paddlers. They’re open for the season on Memorial Day and operate seven days a week from Father’s Day until Labor Day. Info: paddleoutmanasquan.com • Paddle Time Kayaks, 149 S. Riverside Dr., Neptune. You’re likely to find this part-time, family-run mobile kayak company driving this summer in and around Shark River, where it offers rentals and/or guided paddle trips with certified instructors. SEDER SIPS
That old adage “eat, drink and be merry” applies on Passover too. The eight-day holiday (which this year begins at sundown April 15) celebrates the Jews’ freedom from bondage, and it’s customary to drink four cups of wine at each of the two seders. Luckily, the pandemic hasn’t affected kosher wine production as it has some other industries, so l’Chaim! Below, Gabe Geller, sommelier at the New Jersey-based Royal Wine Corp., the largest importer of kosher wines, shares Passover picks: • If you like red wine, try Psagot Jewel, $150: “It’s an impressive bottle of wine with notes of rich black fruit, cedar and vanilla,” Geller says. Buy it at Total Wine & More, 66 Rte. 36., Eatontown, 732.380.6011; totalwineandmore.com • If you like white wine, try Rimapere Sauvignon Blanc, $18, with notes of floral and citrus. Buy it at Buy Rite Wine & Liquor, 2031 N. Black Horse Pike, Monroe, 856.875.1700; williamstownbuyrite.com • If you like imported wine, try Carmel Special Reserve 40th Anniversary Edition 2016, $80, which Geller calls “a tribute to the legendary 1976 Carmel Special Reserve, Israel’s first modern, high-quality red wine.” Buy it at onlinekosherwine.com • One more tip? Geller says you can never go wrong with Baron Herzog, a line of kosher wines from California that recently underwent a revamp. They’re reasonably priced at just $9 to $13 per bottle. Buy them at Wine on the 9, 6545 Rte. 9, Howell, 732.942.6500.

GOT TIME TO SAVE THE WORLD?
YOUR SALAD DAYS
The theme for 2022’s Earth Day on April 22, the 52nd anniversary observance, is “Invest in Our Planet.” It challenges you to do more than just avoid plastic cutlery and bring out your cans on recycling day. You can invest in Earth in a small way by helping out environmental nonprofits here in the county. For example: • Bag and Film Recycling (bagandfilmrecycling. org). This national organization helps you find places to drop off plastic bags and plastic wrap so that it can be recycled separately from other plastic and recovered to make other materials such as composite lumber. Most ShopRite, Whole Foods and Target stores in our area participate, as do Kohl’s in Holmdel and Lowe’s in Eatontown. • Choose to Reuse—NJ, Trenton (njclean.org). This statewide initiative urges New Jerseyans to bring their own reusable bags when shopping instead of single-use paper or plastic ones (which will be banned starting in May). Also, you can call Monmouth County’s Clean Communities coordinator, Anthony Morell, at 732.683.8686, ext. 7539, to find out when and where a litter cleanup is happening in your town and how you can pitch in. • Clean Ocean Action, Long Branch (cleanoceanaction.org). Using research, education and advocacy, this group strives to improve the quality of the water along the New York and New Jersey coastline by reducing pollution and toxins that harm our marine life. In addition to monetary gifts, volunteer opportunities include beach sweeps/cleanups, fundraising, office work and helping out at events to get the word out. • Monmouth Conservation Foundation, Middletown (monmouthconservation.org). MCF works to make positive changes in all aspects of our environment, from safeguarding the waterways to preserving farmland to protecting our county’s natural habitats. Monetary contributions aid the group’s ongoing projects, such as the Shrewsbury Riverfront Park renovation in Sea Bright and the transformation of Jackson Woods Park in Long Branch. • Save Coastal Wildlife, Atlantic Highlands (savecoastalwildlife.org). Through restoration projects, citizen education and science-based research, this nonprofit strives to protect and preserve wildlife along the Jersey Shore, from the Delaware River to Raritan Bay. It regularly looks for volunteers to help out at coastal cleanups, as well as in habitat restoration, where volunteers plant, weed and water to replenish the supply of natural vegetation.
PUPPY LOVE
Dog: Jax, 2-year-old miniature pinscher Owners: Jerome and Sandra Ferullo of Farmingdale Like many other couples, this pair decided that the pandemic was the perfect time to get a puppy—Sandra’s first dog ever!—because they were spending more time at home. And Jax, whom Sandra describes as “the sweetest, most playful soul,” was the perfect addition to their crew. Jax loves playing tag in the yard and running around Jerome in circles to the point of dizziness, and he’s a major snuggler who enjoys sleeping on his “parents’” laps under a warm blanket. The pup has an especially tight bond with Jerome. “It’s amazing to see how a tiny, 4-and-a-half pound dog can affect a 6-foot-3 man in the most loving manner,” says Sandra. “I am grateful that Jax makes my husband smile and relax as soon as he comes home from work. He truly is man’s best friend.” Want your pet featured in a future issue of Monmouth Health & Life? YOUR PLAN FOR POTHOLES The snow and ice have melted, but some effects of winter weather remain. We’re talking about potholes, the unfortunate by-product of all the road treatments used to make winter driving possible. Some potholes are a mere bother; others can almost take our breath away—and cause plenty of damage to our cars. Luckily, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) began a statewide pothole repair campaign in February to fix some of our roads’ biggest pits and cracks. You can also go to 511nj.org to see in real time where crews are repairing potholes in your area. Monmouth County’s public works departments will be working throughout the spring on pothole repair and other roadway improvements. But if you see something, say something; you can report a pothole on a county road to the Monmouth County Highway Division of the Department of Public Works and Engineering at 732.431.6550. Potholes on local roads? Contact the appropriate municipal office.

With the right toppings and the perfect dressing, a salad can be a delicious meal, not just a side you choose when you skip the fries. But even if salads aren’t your go-to, give them a go this May, National Salad Month. Try ordering one of these: • The Chop Chop Salad at The Turning Point (with locations in Holmdel, Little Silver, Long Branch and Sea Girt) is a Cobb salad, essentially, featuring cubed chicken fingers, bacon, red onion, tomato, cucumber and cheddar jack cheese. Peppercorn ranch dressing tops it off nicely. • The Live Green Salad at Good Karma Vegan Café (17 E. Front St., Red Bank) features assorted fresh veggies, mixed seeds and herbed tomatoes, tossed in an apple cider vinaigrette and topped with walnut sprinkle cheese. • The Seared Tuna Superfoods Salad at Firebirds Wood Fired Grill (180 Rte. 35, Eatontown) offers seared tuna over ancient grains, cucumbers, avocado, grilled corn, edamame and radish with avocado lime vinaigrette. • The Sunset Boulevard Salad at The Blonde Shallot (471 Prospect Ave., Little Silver) has grilled flank steak, gorgonzola cheese, corn, tomato, grilled red onion, parsley and a side of balsamic vinaigrette. • The Taco Salad at Seed to Sprout (410 Main St., Avon-by-the-Sea) includes marinated kale, baby greens, avocado, vegan taco meat, red cabbage and pico de gallo. Top it off with apple cider vinaigrette and cashew sour cream.

NUPTIAL CRUNCH?
CINCO SPOTS FOR CINCO DE MAYO Still trying to reschedule your 2020 trip to Cancun? A hearty, Mexican-style celebration is the next best thing, and Cinco de Mayo (May 5) is coming right up. If you’d like to honor Mexico’s 1862 victory over France with tacos, margaritas, tacos, enchiladas, etc., here are some spots to visit: • Azteca Restaurant, Belmar, has a “hacienda”-style vibe that will impress even the “little amigos.” From huevos (eggs) to bistec (steak), every palate will find something here to satisfy. BYOB. 1633 Rte. 71, 732.749.3536; aztecabelmarnj.com • Juanito’s Restaurant, Red Bank, is highly touted for its authentic ambience and flavor, but customers have been coming back for more than 20 years probably because of the varied salsas, as well as the fresh guac, made daily at your table if you wish. BYOB. 159 Monmouth St., 732.747.9118; juanitosredbank.com • Pop’s Garage, Asbury Park, combines the surfer feel with authentic Mexican cuisine right on the Asbury Park boardwalk. Overstuffed burritos, Cuban street corn and skirt steak are among the yummy items on the menu here, along with tequila, Mexican beers and, of course, all the margs. 1000 N. Ocean Ave., 732.576.2181; popsgaragenj.com • Reyna’s, Tinton Falls, has all the usual suspects (quesadillas, picaditas, tortas, etc.), along with a big menu catering to vegetarians and vegans—as well as picky kids. 4057 Asbury Ave., 732.922.2011; reynasmexicanrestaurant.com • Rosalita’s Roadside Cantina, Englishtown, has gone all out for the fifth of May in years past, with kid-friendly bounce houses and games, plus margaritas and mechanical bulls for the adults to enjoy at night. Try menu staples such as chimichangas, chili and popcorn shrimp. BYOB. 180 Rte. 9, 732.617.0099; rosiescantinanj.com
If you’ve got a pile of RSVPs you’ve yet to address for weddings coming up this spring and summer—or you’re planning your own big day or a loved one’s—you’ve got company. Weddings postponed in 2020 and even 2021 due to COVID are making up for lost time. Because of this, many couples are booking weekday affairs rather than your usual Saturday or Sunday— they’re no longer considered undesirable. “Booking a wider set of dates gives couple access to venues that were otherwise booked or out of their budget,” says Jennifer Tolento of the Middletown event planning firm that bears her name. “Weekday weddings are a great way to save money, get the venue you want and not compete with all the weekend weddings during peak season.” Also, a new study conducted by Holidu, the search engine for holiday rentals, shows that New Jersey is the most-searched state when it comes to wedding venues. “We have the best of all worlds when it comes to weddings,” says Athena Auricchio-Ieromonahos, owner of Athena’s Party Design in Shrewsbury. “Beaches, wineries, NYC skyline views, mountain lodges—there’s something for everyone, which is why we see such a high demand.” Our experts’ advice? Book your venue (and date) shortly after you get engaged to avoid unnecessary stress and competition. Adds Auricchio-Ieromonahos: “Once you have your venue, you can have fun focusing on the other details.”
KUDOS: A PHARMACIST GIVES BACK Ritesh Shah of Freehold had worked as a pharmacist in Monmouth County for 20 years, and having to turn away customers who couldn’t afford lifesaving medicines took a toll on him. So this month, motivated by the recent death of his youngest sister, Rena, Shah opened Ritesh Shah Charitable Pharmacy in Red Bank, which offers 180 different meds for blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, mental illnesses and more free of charge to people within 300 percent of the federal poverty level. “Monmouth County has about 40,000 uninsured people who’ve struggled with buying prescriptions, who have to choose between putting food on the table or buying their medication,” he tells Monmouth Health & Life. “When my sister got sick, it changed my life, and I told my wife, ‘This is how we can make our lives more meaningful.’” Besides owning four other Monmouth County pharmacies, Shah serves as the CEO and managing partner of Legacy Pharmacy, where he oversees 500 pharmacies. Along with monetary help from donors, he plans to recruit volunteers from his network of pharmacists to help at Charitable Pharmacy, which also plans to work with local schools to vaccinate students.

{ YOUR FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS }
Beer Pioneer
How did Gretchen Schmidhausler become the state’s first female professional craft brewer? Dogged determination.
In 2014, with 20 years’ experience in the beer industry, Gretchen Schmidhausler set about opening her own brewery in Neptune City. The enterprise needed a name, of course, and her rescue dog, Quincy, seemed its perfect mascot. A Basenji—an ancient breed of hunting dog more akin to hyenas, wolves and dingoes than to some domestic canines—Quincy was independent, tenacious and very challenging to own (much like a brewery, Schmidhausler says). He was also the first small pup she and her husband had adopted. That’s how Little Dog Brewing Co. was christened, but there’s more. “I’m really the ‘little dog,’” the Lake Como resident and award-winning brewmaster confesses. “I possess many qualities the Basenji has.” Indeed, as the first female professional craft brewer in New Jersey, that focused determination has served Schmidhausler well. And although Little Dog may not compare in size with neighboring breweries such as Kane Brewing Company and Beach Haus Brewery, she doesn’t think of it as an underdog. Monmouth Health & Life recently hopped at the chance to ask some questions.
How did you become interested in brewing craft beer? I always, always loved beer. When my girlfriends and I would go out to the bars back in college, we always sought out the better, darker beers—but back then, in the early ’80s, there weren’t a lot of options. Years later, a friend gave me a home-brew kit for Christmas, and I really enjoyed the home brewing. I was eventually offered a job at a local home-brew shop at a now-defunct brewery, and the timing was right. Brewing spoke to me for a few reasons. Obviously, I enjoyed the product, I liked the PR aspect of meeting people and talking to them about the product, and I liked the physical work and the routine of producing beer and the manufacturing aspect as well. There’s a creativity that comes into play. The Brewers Association says that as of 2019, only 7.5 percent of head brewers in the U.S. were women. Have you faced challenges as a woman in a male-dominated industry? I understand that people have had issues and this industry has had issues, but personally I really haven’t; I don’t have any horror stories. I met a lot of people with like interests and even though
MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM
MON.0422.friends.indd 18
18
they were almost exclusively male, I found a lot of camaraderie and mentorship. Physically it wasn’t an issue—it’s hard work, but a lot of jobs are. Are women becoming more prevalent in the industry? Yes. I judge at the Great American Beer Festival and have for about 14 years, and once I started going out and getting involved in that type of event, I met a lot more women. Now I would say I have a good circle of female brewing friends. There are also organizations like the Pink Boots Society that are dedicated to women in the business. What advice would you have for a female who wants to get into the industry? It’s like any job—be responsible, be diligent and know your stuff. You shouldn’t take any BS from anybody, but keep your sense of humor and keep perspective. Craft brewing is a relatively new industry; it’s not like you’re trying to break into some of the trades that have historically always been male, so if you have the knowledge, you can easily compete. Tell me about Little Dog’s selection of beers. I make a range of beers to satisfy different tastes. You want to be able to give people something traditional if that’s what they’re comfortable with, but you also want to have some creative, drinkable seasonal beers. We tend to be a more traditional brewery with more classic styles—for the most part that means German- and English-style ales. I don’t do anything that’s very aggressively flavored or hopped. I like to think everything is balanced and enjoyable. How would you convince someone who doesn’t typically drink beer to come in and give yours a try? Many times when someone says they don’t like beer, they mean typical American light lagers, like a Bud or Miller. They’re surprised to find they like something that has a lot more body and color and flavor. It changes their expectations about what beer is. Or maybe someone says they came with a friend, but they’re really a wine drinker. Well, what kind of wine? There are some similar flavor profiles. Any tips for those interested in cracking into the industry? There are all sorts of careers within brewing—you don’t necessarily have to be the brewer; you could be the salesperson, the tasting-room manager, the brewery ambassador. But if you do want to brew, start out home-brewing. Learn more about the industry, either working at or visiting a local brewery. There are more and more brewing programs out there; consider a formal course. —Sarah Nolan

TAKING CARE OF THE JOINT
An MMC orthopedic surgeon uses cutting-edge tech to perform a ‘life-changing’ shoulder replacement.
Allen Nicholson, M.D., and Barbara Quackenbush

An octogenarian, Barbara Quackenbush thought she’d have to live the rest of her life in excruciating pain after doctors said her shoulder had deteriorated beyond repair. But that’s before she received cutting-edge surgery at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC). After a long career as a government employee and as an avid bowler, the 84-year-old Toms River resident developed arthritis that, over the years, all but disintegrated the bone and rotator cuff in her right shoulder. This left Quackenbush in constant agony, and seemingly easy tasks—retrieving food from a microwave or moving a car gear shifter, for instance—became impossible, she says. “It was getting worse and worse,” says Quackenbush. “I could no longer lift my right arm and was doing everything with my left [arm]. Shifting a car from park into drive with your left arm isn’t ideal.” But fortunes changed last fall when Quackenbush’s physical therapists gave her a business card belonging to Allen Nicholson, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at MMC and Professional Orthopaedic Associates in Tinton Falls, urging her to contact him. Considering other doctors had told her nothing could improve her condition and cortisone shots weren’t helping, Quackenbush didn’t think much of the therapists’ suggestion—until Dr. Nicholson reached out to her. “He told me that he could do a replacement and asked me to come in,” she recalls. “At first I thought, ‘I’m 84, I can’t go through surgery.’ I was so skeptical, but I just couldn’t live with the pain anymore. What did I have to lose?” Dr. Nicholson examined her, inspected her X-rays and decided that she was eligible for a reverse shoulder
APRIL/MAY 2022

replacement. A reverse shoulder replacement reverses the normal ball and socket structure and is typically used for patients with irreparable rotator cuffs or bad wear of the bone socket. However, a standard reverse shoulder replacement was not a viable option because so much of the bone in Quackenbush’s shoulder had deteriorated—meaning he would use technology never before used at MMC. “The arthritis wore down the shoulder for so long that there was barely any socket left,” Dr. Nicholson says. “There just wasn’t enough bone for standard implant fixation.” The key was to affix the shoulder implant in exactly the right spot for “good bony contact,” the doctor notes. “If I didn’t get exactly the right spot and depth, I would not get enough fixation and the shoulder replacement would fail.” To find the perfect spot, Dr. Nicholson performed a CT scan on Quackenbush’s shoulders and uploaded the images to 3D computer planning software. “This showed us the bony wear in great detail and allowed us to move the scapula around to look at the socket wear from different angles,” he says. “The software also lets us place components for the reverse shoulder replacement and see how they fit into the bone. We were able to use augmented implants, implants that have extra metal wedges on the back of them to replace the bone that was missing.” The final step was to create a model of the shoulder using a 3D printer and a custom guide to place the components during the surgery. “Everything went according to
plan,” Dr. Nicholson says. “These high-tech tools have only become available in the last few years. I received extensive training with them during my shoulder fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery.” Quackenbush underwent surgery on Nov. 26 and barely had any pain when she woke up after the procedure. “I thought, ‘OK, it’s just the pain medication that’s blocking the pain’,” she says, “but the pain blockers ended a day later and I still didn’t feel any pain in my shoulder.” She went home shortly after the surgery and began physical therapy, going twice a week for three to four weeks—without pain and with improving motion. Dr. Nicholson notes that Quackenbush is now raising her arm over her head, about 150 degrees. “This is probably more movement than she’s had in 20 years,” he says. The range of motion has surprised Quackenbush and her therapists. “After a month and a half of therapy, they could not believe what I was doing with my arm,” she says. “I can drive again, I can go to the store and my appointments.” “I’m still building the muscle in my arm, so I can’t push a vacuum yet,” she continues. “But by fall, I’ll be bowling again.”

Redoing their second home in West Long Branch, a young couple hoped to entertain summer guests with a bright, welcoming kitchen.
READY FOR VISITORS
Ginny Padula of Town & Country Design Studio in Red Bank gave her young clients the “fresh yet classic” kitchen they envisioned for their summer home in West Long Branch. The center island, perfect for prepping and hosting, seats four—and, of course, their small dog gets a prime seat too!

prepping and serving, Padula says—and a roll-out pantry. “They wanted easy-to-use [features],” she adds. One of the design standouts is what Padula calls a “detailed door style,” a raised-panel door with profile molding that gives the space a classic flair. It anchors the kitchen and improves the flow to each room on the main level, making hosting easy as pie. Another aesthetically pleasing detail is the marble mosaic backsplash by Walker Zanger, also neutral but with a subtle sheen to add dimension. “These homeowners have a lot of bright colors in artwork and accessories,” says the designer, “so they wanted everything else more muted to add these ‘pops.’” On the opposite end of the kitchen in the family-room area, Padula designed a fireplace and a built-in shelving unit to store and show off knickknacks and more collectibles. An art piece in and of itself is the accent wall behind it tiled with “Papillon” tile from Artistic Tile. Padula loves that these clients were willing to take stylistic risks with this space, citing this wall and the unconventional, modern Ligne Roset pendants placed over the island as two prime examples. “They picked some things that most people wouldn’t pick in spaces like this,” she says. “It’s unusual and different and fresh.”
The young couple’s vacation home needed to be a smash. The owners of this center-hall colonial in West Long Branch live most of the year in North Jersey, but they wanted their summer escape at the Jersey Shore to be a haven for guests and entertaining. That meant a gut reno that involved knocking down walls in the cramped and dark main floor to create a brighter, more livable, more open floor plan. And it meant a special focus on one room that needed a whole new look: the kitchen. The couple hired Ginny Padula, principal designer at Town & Country Design Studio in Red Bank, to get the job done. “These clients wanted young and fresh with classic details,” she says of the kitchen. “We went with diamond white cabinetry to keep it fresh and modern, and to emphasize the art pieces they wanted to bring into the space.” Two open glass cabinets display some of these colorful items, which contrast with the deliberately muted palette. And that same far wall is party central—under those glass cabinets and the surrounding cabinets by Plato Woodwork are two wine fridges and a wine-maker. Other kitchen features include a 30-inch Wolf range and Sub-Zero appliances, Kodiak black granite countertop from Polycore, two sinks—the main sink is for cleanup and the island sink is for MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

Making the most of space originally carved out for a formal dining room, designer Jaclyn Isaac introduced a way to go from billiards to dinner table in a snap. She created a lounge atmosphere featuring a 14-foot gold velvet banquette and standout elements such as custom-design tiles by Flor.

He was shooting for a billiards room; she wanted the practicality of a formal dining room. A new-construction home in North Jersey presented a dilemma for Steve and Rania, formerly of Astoria, Queens, and the parents of five children. Fortunately, a happy compromise was as near as the right designer. Indeed, principal designer Jaclyn Isaac, owner of Shrewsbury-based Doni Douglas Designs, came up with a plan to use one room to grant both wishes. Today the homeowners marvel at the ease at which the billiard table can be converted when company’s coming. On those special occasions, hydraulics adjust the height for dining and what resembles wall art turns into a tabletop by Andrew Coslow. Vital to the design plan are acrylic chairs slim enough to be stored until called into action. “The pool table is amazing,” says Steve, who is an enthusiastic fan of how Isaac equipped a formal dining room for everyday fun. While the family vacationed in Greece for two months, Isaac got to work—she surprised them with how she took the contemporary design from paper to reality, finishing in 2019 right before the pandemic. For a flavor of Greece, murals evoke what Rania describes as a “wavy feel” extending across the ceiling, where a smoky-glass-andbrass chandelier by Arteriors adds an abstract touch. The murals help the high ceiling make its own aesthetic statement.
Just right for hosting many guests, a 14-foot-long gold velvet banquette creates a lounge effect. For a sense of drama, gilded-finish vintage mirrors flank windows accented with a laser-cut leather geometric pattern in olive green. Completing the picture are custom design carpet tiles in shades of olive, cream and black over red oak floors. Visible from the kitchen, the living room also had to rise to the challenge of family living. To maximize seating, there’s room for the entire family on the olive velvet curved sofa by Rowe Furniture, paired with two side chairs in white performance fabric from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and a dark bronze table by Michael Aram. The room delivers a pop with a gallery of Thom Filicia black-and-white monoprints and a cut-pile wool, linearcontrast rug over large format porcelain tile in limestone. This creation from Abbot Collection/Loloi Rugs “is almost like an art piece on the floor,” says Isaac. With children ages 5 months to 7 years, the couple appreciates that the living room’s freestanding marble fireplace is water-based. “It’s so the kids can touch it and not burn themselves,” says Steve. “Yet it looks 100 percent like fire.” Coming home from Greece to see how design elements came together under Isaac’s direction was quite a treat. “We loved it all,” says Rania. “She was great to work with, friendly—and knew what I wanted.”

DO RUGS RIGHT You can give bare floors a quick, stylish makeover with these magic-carpet tips from four local pros. By Haley Longman Finding a fabulous area rug to ground your space shouldn’t be a game of Goldilocks: “Too big?” “Too soft?” “Too bright?” Or “just right?” A rug will smartly complement the rest of your décor, as well as add texture and warmth to your space—if it’s chosen and used wisely. So we asked four local designers to share advice on how to find the perfect size, material and style of rug for every room in the home, plus tips on maintaining and cleaning them.

SIZE A too-small rug visually shrinks the space, so when in doubt, go oversized rather than undersized, our experts say. The general rule is to leave 1-and-a-half to 2 feet of bare flooring from the edges of the rug to the wall, and always place the rug just under the front legs of a table or sofa, says Ria Gulian. “For a living/family room, you either want all your furniture halfway on the rug or completely on the rug,” says Nicole Forina. For bedrooms, get a cozy rug that’s cut to the room with a six-inch wood perimeter. “In a dining room,” adds Holly Volpe, “both front and back legs of the chairs should still be on the rug when they’re pushed away from the table.”

STYLE The pattern or overall look of your rug will depend on your taste, of course, and the one you choose should complement the furnishings and the rest of the décor in that room. “We try to use rugs that include the main color of the design,” says Stephanie Lawton. “The pattern of the rug should complement the patterns of other elements in the room.” The pattern you choose will likely depend on the room’s aesthetic. “Look for abstract or geometric rugs for modern or contemporary spaces, and consider a more plain, floral or damask pattern for traditional spaces.” Gulian says to treat the rug just as you would other fabrics such as drapes or upholstery. “Once you have a style or theme for the room, then select the area rug to coordinate with the other fabrics in that space,” she advises.

MATERIAL Our experts agree that the material of your rug depends on the room in which it’s placed. For first-floor, high-traffic areas such as a mud room or an entryway, “the best options are rugs made of nylon, olefin or polypropylene fibers,” says Forina. If you’re going to put a rug in the kitchen, she suggests trying a vintage Turkish runner, which is made of durable wool and has busy patterns that will easily hide kitchen messes. And Volpe has one tip to keep in mind when you’re considering the height of the rug’s pile (shag vs. low-profile or loop-pile): “The higher the pile, the more luxurious it is, but the harder it probably is to keep clean.”

{ FLOOR PLAN } MAINTENANCE There’s no point in purchasing fabulous rugs if they’re not properly taken care of. Shake and air them out regularly, spot-clean as needed according to the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions—blot into the stain, don’t rub—and consider hiring a professional rug service to deepclean once a year, either at your home or off-site, says Volpe. A good rug pad is imperative too, to protect the hardwood floors, but each kind has a different purpose. “If you’re worried about the rug being too thick or adding height to it, then a rubber loom rug pad is best,” says Lawton. “Felt rug pads are heavier and thicker, and they add more cushioning.”
IT’S UP TO YOU Some of your rug decisions will depend on your own preferences—or what you have already. For instance: • If you have an open floor plan…resist the urge to go too matchy-matchy with the rugs in each room. Instead, “the rugs should complement each other,” says design assistant Stephanie Lawton of Tinton Falls. “They should have the same color if they’re going to be close together, or at least not clash.” • If you like the layered look…don’t be afraid to layer rugs, because it’s a seamless way to add texture to your space. “Both rugs should be relatively low-pile when achieving MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM
MON.0422.rugs _MF.indd 42
this look, with the larger rug a more organic natural and coarse material such as sisal, jute or seagrass,” Tinton Falls designer Nicole Forina suggests. “For example, if you have a special Persian rug but it feels too small for your living space? Layer it over a large sisal rug!” • If you want a runner on your stairs…opt for a wool or nylon runner that will stand up to foot traffic. “A runner protects wood flooring and prevents slips,” says designer Holly Volpe of Colts Neck. “When selecting a runner, consider style, usage and price point.”

MONMOUTH COUNTY’S
TOP REAL ESTATE AGENTS
2022 MONMOUTH COUNTY IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST SEASONED AND TALENTED REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS IN THE COUNTRY. To help readers find the best agents to work with, Monmouth Health & Life contracted DataJoe Research of Boulder, Colorado to facilitate a multi-faceted research campaign. It consisted of an online survey delivered directly to agents across Monmouth County via email as well as internet research. In the survey, real estate agents were asked to provide sales volume ranges and also nominate their peers. In the Internet campaign, DataJoe consulted a variety of websites to build richer knowledge of individual licensed real estate agents across the county. DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at the time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If they were not able to find evidence of a real estate agent’s current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that real estate agent was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied results to Monmouth Health & Life for final review. We recognize that there are many good real estate agents who are not shown on the representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the county.

After 35 years of living in Holmdel, there’s not much she couldn’t tell you about the area—from the inside scoop on schools and the best local businesses to how long it will take you to drive just about anywhere. Doreen thinks of herself as a counselor and facilitator for her clients, not just a representative. She’s an always-available, hands-on guide from start to finish who knows that the devil is in the details. For sellers, Doreen will craft a narrative through staging and photography that amplifies the best and most marketable aspects of their home. Buyers can expect insight that goes well beyond comps and nearby amenities to find them not just a house that suits their needs, but a home that suits their life. This client-centric approach has really made a difference for past clients like Mary and Bob: “Doreen’s expertise in the Holmdel community was
TopRealtors_2022_v5_JF_Monmouth_SS.indd 48
instrumental in helping us assess the market and get the best possible price for our home.” Joe and Nicole agree: “Doreen’s industry knowledge is undeniable. Not only did she bring more offers than we expected, she also negotiated for a much faster close which relieved a lot of stress for us.” A year and a half after becoming a licensed realtor, Doreen started winning New Jersey Realtors Circle of Excellence Sales Awards. She has maintained or increased her level of certification every year and is currently at the highest tier, Platinum. She attributes part of her exponential success to her willingness to learn and adapt. “With every listing, every tour, every negotiation, there’s always something to be learned and leveraged down the line,” she says. I love what I do, and my clients trust me.” As a four-time top producer at Heritage House Sotheby’s International Realty and an 11-time Platinum New Jersey Realtors Circle of Excellence Sales Award winner, it would be easy to assume that Bernadette’s sales and marketing acumen have led her to be frequently among the top one percent of realtors in Monmouth County. She believes her success is due equally to the relationships she develops with her clients by being a hardworking advocate for their best interests. “I was raised to believe that honesty is the best policy,” says Bernadette. “For example, when I’m showing a client a home, I always point out possible defects and potential issues. Trust is paramount in my relationships with both buyers and sellers.”
TopRealtors_2022_v5_JF_Monmouth_SS.indd 49
Before she became a real estate agent, Bernadette relocated many times, living in New York, Connecticut, California and Hong Kong before coming back to New Jersey. She experienced first-hand how important it is to partner with a realtor who is an excellent listener and communicator, and is willing to go the extra mile to make sure you find the right home. Those moves also showed her what it’s like to have to make a housing decision over the course of a single weekend—something that’s become commonplace in today’s real estate market. “The current market frenzy has been a challenge for buyers and sellers,” says Bernadette. “It’s my responsibility to guide both in making prompt, educated decisions that lead to the best outcome for them.”

In line with her promise to provide personalized attention to each and every buyer and seller she represents, Ranka doesn’t work behind a team. Operating independently means that Ranka gets to be fully hands-on with what she loves most about her job—building relationships and helping her neighbors. No matter what stage of the process they’re in, when a client needs something, Ranka answers the call and takes care of it herself. She loves facing and resolving the day-to-day challenges that are inherent in her line of work. “She was outstanding,” says one former client, Alex. “Ranka is a true advocate. She advised us on every aspect of each transaction, from home inspection and certificate of occupancy to mortgage and closing. She was present at all of the showings and insightful on each potential buyer. When
TopRealtors_2022_v5_JF_Monmouth_SS.indd 50
it came to buying our new home, Ranka knew the market extremely well and provided candid observations on all the houses we viewed. Hands down the best realtor we’ve ever worked with.” Beyond her work ethic, personal approach and extensive knowledge base, Ranka says she relies on her intuition and expert interpersonal skills to present the best options to buyers and highlight the intangible aspects of sellers’ homes. “Every house has a story,” she says, “and people are unique. You need to look past what a property has on paper and see what it has to offer real people living there. I consider that part of ‘knowing the market.’ It’s not just recalling facts and figures and spotting trends.” Last year, Ranka’s individual sales eclipsed 20 million dollars.

GREEN SOUP WITH HARD-BOILED EGGS Yields 8 servings
INGREDIENTS:
n▢ 2 Tbs. olive oil n▢ 5 medium yellow potatoes, cubed n▢ 3-5 carrots, scrubbed and sliced n▢ 3-5 stalks carrot tops (optional), cleaned n▢ 2 parsnips (optional), sliced n▢ 2 celery stalks, cut in half n▢ ¼ cup celeriac root (optional), peeled and cubed n▢ 3-5 whole parsley, stems and leaves n▢ 8 cups water n▢ 2 Tbs. salt n▢ 1 tsp. pepper n▢ 1 bunch or clamshell spinach, chopped n▢ 3 scallions, sliced into thin circles n▢ 3 eggs, hard-boiled and diced n▢ ½ lemon, juiced n▢ ¼ cup dill, chopped n▢ sour cream, for serving
DIRECTIONS:
In a large pot or a 4.5-quart Dutch oven, over medium heat, heat olive oil, enough to coat the bottom of the pot. Add potatoes, carrots and parsnips, stir periodically. Cook for about 7 minutes or until vegetables look slightly softened. Season with ½ tablespoon of salt. Add celeriac root, celery, carrot tops, parsley and 8 cups of water. Allow the liquid to come to a gentle simmer. Season with 1 tablespoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of pepper. Close the lid partially. Lower the heat to low. Cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 30 minutes. Remove and discard parsley, carrot tops and celery. In the meantime, make hard-boiled eggs. Add eggs to a small pot, cover eggs with cool water and place on the stovetop over medium/high heat. Cover the pot and let the water come to a rolling boil. Once the water reaches this point, cook eggs for about 6 minutes. Turn off the heat and drain the water. Run the pot under cold water to stop the cooking process. Once the eggs have cooled down, dry and peel the shells. Add spinach and scallions and the remaining ½ tablespoon of salt. Squeeze juice from half a large lemon. Continue cooking for about 3 minutes. Turn off the heat and add sliced or diced eggs.
This loaded green veggie soup is not only high in fiber, which supports a healthy microbiome, but it also contains herbs and spices that fight inflammation. In addition, the colorful vegetables included in this recipe contain vitamins A and C, which support the immune system.”
—Nikki Yelton, registered dietitian, Nikki Yelton RD, Red Bank
When serving, ladle soup into a bowl, add a spoonful of sour cream and a sprinkle of fresh dill.

ROAST RACK OF LAMB WITH LEMON AND GARLIC Yields 4 servings
INGREDIENTS:
n▢ 3 Tbs. olive oil n▢ 2 tsp. coarse sea salt n▢ freshly cracked black pepper n▢ zest and juice of 1 lemon n▢ 2–3 garlic cloves, finely minced n▢ 2 small lamb racks (approximately 12 oz. each) n▢ 1–2 Tbs. olive oil (extra)
DIRECTIONS:
In a small bowl, mix together the oil, salt, pepper, lemon and garlic. Place the racks of lamb into a large Ziploc freezer bag. Pour the marinade into the bag, seal the bag and make sure the racks of lamb are well coated in the marinade. Leave to marinate for at least 30 minutes, but overnight in the fridge is best. If your kitchen is cool, leave the bag on the kitchen counter to marinate. Otherwise, place it in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 390°F. Let the meat come to room temperature before cooking. Heat the extra oil in a large oven-proof saucepan which will fit both racks of lamb comfortably. On a medium-high heat, sear the racks of lamb on each side until they are nicely browned. Once both sides of the racks of lamb have been seared, quickly position them on the saucepan so the bones are standing upwards.
Lamb is a great protein for gut health because it’s an easier protein to break down and digest than some other forms of animal protein. It’s also high in B vitamins and iron, making it a nutritional powerhouse. I love that this recipe is light and fresh and includes lemon to alkalize the body, along with garlic, which is a prebiotic that feeds good gut bacteria.”
—Nikki Yelton, registered dietitian, Nikki Yelton RD, Red Bank
Place the saucepan into the oven and roast for 15-20 minutes, depending on how well-cooked you like your meat. You can test for doneness by prodding the meat gently, but a more accurate way of testing is to use a meat thermometer. Allow the lamb to rest for about 10 minutes before carving.

{ POWER FOOD }
Salad’s Secret Weapon
Arugula, a peppery-tasting, leafy green, can enliven a lazy lettuce—and maybe you too! Those ancient Romans weren’t fools, and neither, centuries later, was Charlemagne. The tart-but-tender, leafy, cruciferous vegetable known to science as Eruca vesicaria (and to us as arugula) was on the menu in the Eternal City— and for a reason. The poet Virgil wrote that it “revives drowsy Venus,” and by Venus he meant the libido. Legend says the plant was therefore shunned by propriety-minded monastery gardens, but the King of the Franks came to its rescue in 802 A.D. by decreeing it an officially OK herb. Arugula isn’t lettuce; it’s actually a member of the mustard family, kin to kale, broccoli and cabbage. Plants are native to warm climates such as those of the Mediterranean, Turkey and western Asia; they grow from 8 to 40 inches tall. The world’s two top growers today are China and the U.S. Still, we Yanks were slow to climb aboard the arugula bus. Reportedly the name of this leafy treat didn’t show up in American English until 1960, when it appeared in a Craig Claiborne New York Times column. But by 2006, when writer David Kamp published a book about “how we became a gourmet nation,” saluting everything from heirloom tomatoes to artisanal cheeses, he knew just what title would capture the national foodie mood: The United States of Arugula. POWER UP: Whether or not it’s a true boost in the bedroom—we still don’t know that answer for
sure—arugula has arrived, and with it a host of health benefits. Research suggests that its high levels of nitrates and polyphenols can reduce both blood pressure and the amount of oxygen the body burns during exercise. Arugula contains bone-building calcium and musclebuilding potassium. According to the FDA’s recommended daily values, a cup of arugula can furnish 27.7 percent of the body’s daily need for vitamin K, 9.5 percent of its vitamin A and 2.5 percent of its vitamin C. (One caution: If you’re taking a blood-thinning medication, don’t load up suddenly on arugula, as K promotes clotting and could negate the meds’ effectiveness.) Diets rich in cruciferous veggies such as arugula have been linked to a lowered risk of cardiovascular disease and of type 2 diabetes, and a 2017 meta-analysis associated them with lower cancer risk too. (One mechanism? Apparently the body breaks down the glucosinolates in these foods into several compounds including sulforaphane, which blocks an enzyme in the progression of cancer cells.) Another study, in the journal PLOS in 2014, confirmed that erucin, found in arugula, inhibits the proliferation of a type of breast-cancer cells. As a food that offers an intriguing, peppery taste at a measly 5 to 6 calories per cup, arugula can be a healthy alternative to whatever else you’re tempted to munch. What’s not to like?
BUY/STORE/SERVE: In the wised-up foodieland America has become, you should have no trouble finding arugula at your local grocery store, vegetable stand or farmers’ market. The bagged product may be there yearround, while bunches and loose-leaf arugula are most plentiful in early spring or fall. Look for bright green leaves, giving yellow, wilted or mushy ones a pass-by. A bit of dirt, however, needn’t be a deal breaker—you’ll be washing off the leaves when you get them home. You can refrigerate leaves (wrapped in a slightly damp paper towel) in an airtight container for about 10 days. Plucked when young, the plant is straight-on green; more mature arugula is darker and more pungent. Arugula (especially baby arugula) is great when eaten raw, perhaps in a salad in combination with milder greens, to which it adds pizzazz. It’s also a happy companion to citrus fruits or flavorful cheeses. Arugula may be worked into a casserole, a pasta dish or a sauce. Top a pizza with it as the Italians do (they call it rucola, yet another alias) or chop it up and sprinkle it over scrambled eggs, an omelette or a baked potato. Search the internet and you’ll quickly be awash in arugula recipes if you like; they include quesadillas, turkey pita sandwiches, sausage fettuccines, carrot pancakes, beef carpaccios—even a gimlet cocktail. Have a vegetable garden or a north-facing window? You can grow your own arugula. —Timothy Kelley
DID YOU KNOW? Historians believe arugula is the plant referred to as oroth in the Bible’s Old Testament book of Kings (II Kings 4:39).

“My daughter Emily and I took this photo to recreate a picture we took in 2016 when I was battling cancer. We took that shot because I wanted her to know I was still strong enough to carry her up the trail at Clayton Park in Upper Freehold. I’m a survivor now, but there is always another hill to climb. It has more meaning when you have to work hard and persevere through the difficult times on your way to the top. Enjoy the journey, the little moments, and be the best you!” —Michael Oehlmann, Brielle
