A DVERTI S EMENT

Are You Ready To Retire? W

ELCOME to the latest edition of Fiscal Fitness? It’s local’s summer at the Jersey Shore and the beautiful beaches are at their best! For me, it’s one of the busiest times of the year as people are preparing for year-end focusing on tax & investment planning. The Pandemic has caused many to re-think retirement and are looking for creative ways to accomplish their goals. Others are leaving the workforce earlier than expected and need to plan carefully. TIMING IS EVERYTHING The age at which you retire can have an enormous impact on your overall retirement income situation, so you’ll want to make sure you’ve considered your decision from every angle, including when to take social security, projecting health insurance costs, and when and which accounts to tap into first. HOW LONG SHOULD YOU PLAN FOR? The average 65-year-old American can expect to live for more than 19 additional years1. Keep in mind that life expectancy has increased at a steady pace over the years and is expected to continue increasing. For the ladies out there, we are outliving the men, on average, by 7 years. The bottom line: it’s not unreasonable to plan for a retirement period that lasts for 30 years or more. SOCIAL SECURITY Although you can begin receiving benefits as early as age 62, your benefits will be permanently reduced by as much as 25-30% than if you waited until full retirement age (FRA 66-67). Are there other sources of income you could tap into first to allow your benefits to continue to grow? EMPLOYER PLANS If you are lucky enough to have an employer pension plan, make sure it won’t be negatively affected by your early retirement. Because

the greatest accrual of benefits generally occurs during your final years of employment, an early retirement could effectively reduce the benefits you receive. 401(K) & IRAS If you plan to start using your 401(k) or traditional IRA savings before you turn 59½, a 10% early distribution penalty tax in addition to any regular income tax is due.2 (exceptions apply). Do you have other investments to draw from to avoid early distribution penalties? Bottom line: speak to a qualified tax advisor or CFP® before taking any distributions. MEDICARE You are not eligible for Medicare until you turn 65. Unless you’ll be eligible for retiree health benefits through your employer (or have coverage through your spouse’s plan), you’ll need to calculate the cost of paying for insurance or health care out-of-pocket, at least until you can receive Medicare coverage. LONG-TERM CARE The possibility of a prolonged stay in a nursing home weighs heavily on the minds of many older Americans and their families. Many people assume that Medicaid will pay for long-term care costs. Eligibility rules are numerous and complicated, varying from state to state so speak to a qualified advisor before making any assumptions. These are not easy decisions to make and require careful planning. Now may be the time to meet with an experienced and qualified CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional who can help put all the pieces of the retirement puzzle together.

{ WELCOME LETTER }

Your home for the best healthcare Home is the theme of this issue of Monmouth Health & Life, and in the pages of our In Good Health section, we introduce you to a new physician and lifelong Monmouth County resident who has a unique role in being able to provide patients with close-tohome access to the most advanced, comprehensive care for blood cancers. We are proud to welcome Hussam Eltoukhy, M.D., a hematologist/oncologist with expertise in benign and malignant blood disorders such as leukemia and lymphomas. Monmouth Medical Center has a bold vision for the future of healthcare in Monmouth County—one that brings together world-class care with community connections; provides care when, where and how our patients prefer; and continues to shape the future of healthcare. The growing partnership between Monmouth Medical Center and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey—the state’s only National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center—means our patients have access in one convenient nearby location to innovative treatments, precision medicine, clinical trials and care informed by the latest research. And through this partnership, Dr. Eltoukhy’s patients have access to the full spectrum of therapeutic procedures and advanced treatment options for blood cancers, including CAR T-cell therapy and other cellular therapies. They also have close-to-home access to one of only two programs that provide blood and marrow transplantation in the state. Additionally, at our new Family Care & Wellness facility opening this winter in Eatontown, innovative and expansive cancer support programs will be offered to help our patients continue to live life to the fullest from treatment through survivorship. Fighting cancer can feel overwhelming, and the burden of travel to a far-away cancer center certainly adds to that stress. By offering our patients new hope with innovative solutions in the fight against cancer and supporting them in their journey from diagnosis to survivorship, right here, we are truly providing the highest level of cancer care close to home.

{ EDITOR’S NOTE }

Details, Details As anyone who has embarked on a home renovation will tell you, the idiom “the devil is in the details” could not be more accurate. If you’re a trusting soul and have worked with a pro in the past, perhaps you’ll leave much of the decision-making to him or her. Still, there are several dozen decisions you’ll likely make, and the first one is the hardest: where to start. You might choose a mood board, or concept board, to display the bits and pieces you fall in love with—fabric swatches, tile samples, wood finishes, paint hues. Then you put together the pieces of the puzzle, one by one. In the living room, for example, you might choose a sofa, a pair of chairs or a love seat as the room’s anchor. But if you already possess a beloved carpet or piece of artwork, it could just as easily be that. Whatever you choose, the starting point is that one thing that serves as the inspiration from which all subsequent decisions will flow. Sometimes, however, lifestyle dictates how a designer reinvents a space. A Sea Girt family’s knack for entertaining was the driving force behind their new kitchen, put together by designer Mary Catherine McCarthy. Keeping party potential in mind, McCarthy redid the layout to incorporate an island and bar area with a beverage center and bar sink. Read all the details in “Endless Summer” on page 38. Family also influenced a Holmdel couple to redo their entire home so it would better suit their growing kids. For instance, designer Alma Russo transformed the old play area into an openconcept space that became entertainment central for everyone. Turn to “New Look for A New Era” on page 28 to read about it. Though our Home Issue has plenty more design ideas and inspiration (“Small Space, Big Impact” on page 36, “Lights On” on page 20), we’re also celebrating one of our favorite times of the year. Our fashion story (page 42) showcases five great looks inspired by the season’s hottest colors, while Local Buzz (page 14) features lists of the best things to do, road races to run and wines to make on your own. It’s packed with tips you can use, whether you’re on an autumn hay ride or lacing up your running sneakers before taking in the brisk fresh air. We hope you find ideas here for whatever you wish for when it comes to home, so you can most relish your time there.

BORN TO RUN? OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTY.

A FUN-FILLED FALL

It’s that time of year: We hail the return of pumpkin spice lattes and happily move stylish leather jackets to the front of the closet. And there are other fall rites of passage—festive activities that, if neglected, can lead to a serious case of FOMO (fear of missing out). Many Monmouth County spots offer more than one of the seasonal to-dos, but here’s where to go if you’re looking for… …a corn maze: A. Casola Farms’ new, larger location with ample parking that’s just a half a mile away from the main farm makes way for a 5-acre unhaunted corn maze with 3 miles of convoluted trails. New for 2021 is the sunflower maze; both attractions are open on weekends, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. • 200 Rte. 34, Holmdel, 732.322.1533; acasolafarms.com

…pumpkin picking: Family-owned Cheesequake Farms based in nearby Old Bridge is known for pick-your-own activities, and you’ll find perfect pumpkins for the pickin’ both here and at the Matawan location. You can either walk or take a hayride—the tractor has benches instead of hay to accommodate those who can’t sit low to the ground—to the field where large, small and just-right gourds await. P.S.: The corn maze is also included in the price of a hayride. • 1191 Rte. 34, Matawan, 732.583.6780; cheesequakefarms.com

…a petting zoo: Besides horseback riding and carriage rides, Allaire Community Farm has weekend petting zoos, where kids and adults can get up-close-andpersonal with goats, llamas, pigs and more. • 1923 Baileys Corner Rd., Wall Township, 732.796.3298; allairecommunityfarm.org

…a haunted hayride: Hop on board C. Casola Farms’ Haunted Hayride of Terror for a creepy evening in the backwoods of New Jersey, where you’re likely to hear and see things come alive. Alternate options are the 3D Haunted Barn and the Haunted Wooded Trail, all of which are open starting at 6:30 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. • 131 S. Main St., Marlboro, 732.946.7085; hauntedcasola.com

…fun for the littles: New Jersey toddler parents undeniably have Happy Day Farms on their fall to-do list, as this place offers a ton of fun for your little kids on weekends throughout October. Slides, tractor rides, pumpkin bowling, a pirate ship, pig races, a hay mountain, horse swings and more are all included in the price of the fall festival admission. It also has nursing stations set up as well as porta-potties for potty-trained little ones. • 106 Iron Ore Rd., Manalapan; 732.977.3607; happydayfarmnj.com

Heat waves and humidity were the perfect excuses to skip summer runs, but fall weather is optimal for a jog. Don’t worry if you’re not up to speed—our county has organized events for runners of all skill levels. For the beginner: Tutu 2.2, Oct. 23, Asbury Park. You know it’ll be a good time when you’re running (or walking) in a tutu. Another pro to this 2.2-mile course, starting at Convention Hall and finishing at Langosta Lounge, is that it’s for a good cause: Proceeds for the run go toward Big Brothers Big Sisters of Coastal and Northern New Jersey. Information: runsignup.com/tutu For the weekend warrior: Pizza the Trail 5K, Nov. 7, Farmingdale. Enjoy a peaceful walk or run along a bike path and the trails of a park in this pizza-themed 5K for the whole family. Trophies will be awarded for the top men and women overall as well as for different age groups, but all finishers will get a pizza-themed medal, a T-shirt and a slice of pizza catered by local restaurants. Information: runningintheusa.com For the Olympian-in-training: Stomp the Monster Spooktacular Fun Run, Oct. 16, Manasquan. Bring out your best costume and put your best foot forward for this 4-mile run beginning at Leggett’s Sand Bar. Each mile will give you a bit of everything—oceanic views from the boardwalk, river views from the Manasquan Inlet and Mallard Park and, finally, a tour of the heart of this picturesque town. There’s also a 2-mile course option if four is just a bit too ambitious. Information: stompthemonster.org

WHEN IN DOUBT, STOMP IT OUT

Have you spotted a spotted lanternfly? Once considered a problem mostly for counties near Pennsylvania, this insect has made its way across New Jersey into Monmouth County. It may look like a harmless cross between a ladybug and a butterfly, but the lanternfly, though not harmful to humans, is known to feed on 70 different types of plants and trees, especially during fall, according to the New Jersey Department of Agriculture. What to do if you come across one of these bad guys? Stomp on it—trust us, your pangs of remorse will pass once you realize that this pest is doing our environment more harm than good. Then report your sighting to 833.4BADBUG or online at nj.gov to help stop the spread.

PUPPY LOVE Dog: Benny, one-and-ahalf-year-old Shih Tzu Owners: Jeryl and Alan Krupnick of Interlaken Like many pet ownersto-be, the Krupnicks had trouble finding their “dream dog” during the pandemic, when supply for puppies didn’t meet demand. They wanted a dog small enough to (eventually) take on a plane with them. Their daughter found this 14-pound Shih Tzu on Craig’s List, so they met the Passaic Countybased owners at a rest stop on the Garden State Parkway and made him theirs right then and there. Lucky Benny gets to sleep in bed with his pawrents every night, enjoys playing catch with his stuffed animals and loves long walks around the neighborhood. He also waits by the door every evening for Alan to come home from work, at which point he attacks him with kisses. “He’s perfect!” says Jeryl. Want to see your pup in our next issue of Monmouth Health & Life? Email our editor in chief Rita Guarna at rita.guarna@ wainscotmedia.com, or shoot us a DM on Instagram @monmouthhealthandlife.

CULINARY CORNER A MEATLESS MAMA Monmouth County’s vegan population probably already knows Mama Hill, a vegan catering company that does private tastings, picnics and events. But good news: These guys recently opened their own storefront in Long Branch, where they sell vegan grab-and-go items such as pasta salad, “chicken” Caesar wraps and “beef” empanadas. Private events are still bookable too. Pro tip: Don’t forget to ask about the daily specials! • Mama Hill, 295 Joline Ave., Long Branch, 732.443.4727; mamahill.com

MAKE LIKE MONTREALERS Have you tried poutine? This Canadian dish is served to perfection at Berg’s Montreal Smoked Meat & Poutine, a new restaurant that operates out of the Asbury Park Food Collective. Potatoes are fried and topped with cheese curds and then a generous drizzle of beef gravy made from scratch. The establishment’s smoked pastrami sandwich is the perfect companion to poutine, but the menu features other delish deli sandwiches and side dishes too. (Note: Due to the pandemic, Berg’s currently offers only delivery and takeout.) • Berg’s Montreal Smoked Meat & Poutine, 906 Sewall Ave., Asbury Park, 732.889.0245; bergssmokedmeat.com

THAT LITTLE OLD WINEMAKER, YOU

AT POKE, YOU PICK The national chain Poke Bar has just opened its first-ever New Jersey location in Freehold. This fast-casual spot lets customers customize poke bowls—the Hawaiian delicacy featuring raw fish, veggies and rice—with a six-step process where you’ll choose your base, protein, mix-in, sauce, sides and toppings. Not since the invention of the salad bar has healthy food taken such a leap toward fun.

Why not pair the delicacies of the fall season with a glass of vino you make yourself? No, it won’t be done in one session (more like four or six), but that’s even better—something to look forward to all month! GIVE ’EM A BREAK

The season of giving draws near, and it’s never too early to get a head start. One local organization that could use your help is Lunch Break, which helps Monmouth County residents living in poverty. The goal of its new campaign, “Renew the Promise of Hope,” is to raise money to fund an expansion and renovation of the Red Bank facility to better accommodate the community’s growing needs. Possibilities include a new-and-improved pantry, more food storage, enlarged dining rooms and an on-site life skills center. Last year during the pandemic, Lunch Break’s grab-and-go meals were up 21 percent from 2019, and grocery distribution was up 111 percent. Also, the organization’s COVID fund distributed more than $800K to help residents in need pay for necessities. Donate and learn more at lunchbreak.org.

STRONG UNION, BETTER HEALTH

A happy relationship was associated with lower stress levels and inflammation among breast cancer survivors, decreasing their risk of a recurrence. It also protected against other illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes.

—Ohio State University

FLOSS FOR HEALTH

Poor oral health—not brushing and flossing regularly—may lead to bacteria trailing into the bloodstream, causing inflammation. Older adults who skimped on oral hygiene were 20 to 35 percent more likely to die, according to a decades-long study. —University of Southern California

SLOW MEMORY LOSS WITH EXERCISE

PROLIFERATION OF POLLEN Pollen season in the United States is about 20 days longer than in 1990, plus the air is filled with 21 percent more pollen. This is due, in part, to plants blooming earlier than they did a decade ago.

—Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

The percentage of Americans’ waking hours, on average, spent sitting or being inactive. That’s 12 hours out of a 16-hour waking day. Experts advise getting up and walking around at least once an hour, as being sedentary has been linked to longterm health woes such as diabetes and heart disease. —Annals of Internal Medicine

Adults with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease who took part in a regular exercise program were found to have significantly less memory loss than those who didn’t follow a regular regimen. Even a six-month aerobic exercise program was found to reduce cognitive decline.

MON.1021.health bits.indd 22

To find out if intermittent fasting can prolong life, researchers studied mice and found that rodents who were fed all their food within a four-hour span lived 80 percent longer than those fed throughout the day. In humans, eating within 8 hours then going without food for 16 hours has been shown to reduce blood pressure and lower cholesterol and aid in weight loss. In terms of living longer, more research is needed. —New England Journal of Medicine

THE SLEEP/ DEPRESSION CONNECTION

A study of more than 800,000 people found that going to sleep and waking up one hour earlier decreases the risk of major depression by 23 percent. —University of Colorado, Boulder

KINDNESS PAYS

Helping others is good for them, but evidence also points to its protective effects for you. A study showed that giving emotional and practical support to loved ones in crisis, including running errands and helping with chores, was associated with a reduced risk of dying. The theory is that positive emotions are good for heart health. —University of Michigan

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARNESS MONTH

7 Important Reasons to Get Your Mammogram Women in America have a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer over their lifetime. Early detection offers the best hope for catching a cancer early when chances for a cure are highest. “Breast cancer screening and early detection save lives,” says Alexander King, MD, Regional Director of Breast Radiology for RWJBarnabas Health Southern Region, which encompasses Monmouth Medical Center, Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus and Community Medical Center. “Physician organizations agree that annual screening mammography, beginning at age 40, will save the most lives.” In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month here are seven reasons why you should keep mammography screening on track:

1

You can get breast cancer even if it doesn’t run in the family. “The most common misconception I hear from women is, ‘I don’t have a family history of breast cancer; therefore, I don’t need screening,’” says Dr. King. But 75 percent of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer don’t have a significant family history, he says. That said, having a family history does elevate breast cancer risk. Plus, you can have an elevated risk due to inherited mutations in certain genes, including BRCA1 or BRCA2, which are especially common among certain populations such as Ashkenazi Jews and Black women.

2

You have dense breasts. Breasts that contain a lot of fibrous or glandular tissue and little fat are considered dense. Dense breasts increase your risk for breast cancer, making regular mammograms particularly important. Women with dense breasts sometimes require additional types of screening, says Dr. King. “They’re more likely to hide a cancer in their breast where a mammogram, which is a type of X-ray, might not see it,” he says. “An ultrasound of dense breasts may detect breast cancers that are not seen on a mammogram.” Ask your doctor or radiologist if your breasts are dense and whether you would benefit from supplemental screening.

3

You’re getting older. Like many other health issues, your risk for breast cancer rises with age. Most breast cancers are diagnosed after age 40. “For every year that you live, you’re more likely to develop breast cancer in the next year,” says Dr. King.

4

You are African American. African American women are more likely to die from breast cancer when compared to white women of similar age. One reason is that, due to lower screening rates, their cancers are often caught at later stages, says Dr. King. In addition to being under-screened, African American women tend to have more aggressive types of breast cancer, particularly triple-negative breast cancer (a type of cancer not fueled by the hormones estrogen and progesterone or the HER2 protein), for which there are fewer effective treatment options, says Dr. King. African American women are also twice as likely as non-Jewish white women to have dangerous BRCA gene mutations. Better outcomes start with regular mammograms.

rwjbh.org/mammo

5

A mammogram may detect other issues. Besides finding cancer, breast imaging can reveal other health problems that you and your doctor need to know about. “You can find breast abscesses on mammography and ultrasound,” says Dr. King. “Occasionally, we also diagnose lymphoma on a screening mammogram.”

6

You started menstruation early— or menopause late. Having your first menstrual period before age 12 or starting menopause after age 55 both increase your risk for breast cancer. That’s because they increase your lifetime exposure to estrogen. “In addition, never being pregnant and having your first child after age 30 increase your lifetime risk,” Dr. King says.

7

You skipped your mammogram last year. Many people postponed checkups and screenings during the COVID-19 pandemic to avoid exposure to the virus at healthcare facilities. But the longer a breast cancer has had an opportunity to grow, the more dangerous it becomes. “The size of your cancer is a big determinant of your long-term survival,” says Dr. King. If it’s been more than a year since your last mammogram, be sure to book an appointment.

NEW LOOK FOR A NEW ERA

There are some projects best held off with wee ones underfoot, and a whole-house renovation is one of them. That’s how Holmdel homeowners Sonya and Maulin felt in deciding to make do with a Mediterranean motif after their 2014 move. They always knew that one day they’d redesign their colonial to better fit their more transitional style and their zest for entertaining. That day came in July 2020—while COVID home-based their NYC jobs for a spell—and yes, the kids no longer fit the playroom scene. “The design trajectory was to create sophisticated and inviting interiors that were also elegant,” says Alma Russo of AR Interiors LLC, who worked on the reno with Precision General Contracting. “We wanted to make sure the adult guests would feel as comfortable as their children.” When the playroom wall came down, it had a ripple effect Sonya describes as a highlight of the remodel. Approaching their tweens, the two kids would gain a theater, a candy bar and a game room in a basement designed for them. For the adults, the open living room was expanded to provide a wine-sipping area with a waterfall-edge countertop in Pietra di Cordoza, a honed granite. gray) stand out for asymmetrical design and conveniences, and the big game is readily visible from the gray Bernhardt stools. “We did a much more modern take on the traditional coffered ceiling,” says Russo, who topped it off with starburst chandeliers by Visual Comfort. An open leather bench by Four Hands separates the bar and the sitting area with an ivory sectional in a performance fabric. As a common thread for the home design, Russo chose a saturated blue palette juxtaposed with lighter hues for contrast and warmth. The taupe Duchateau engineering flooring throughout is another nod to continuity. The dining room dips into the chosen palette with its navy velvet Caracole chairs at a free-formed walnut table paired with Thibaut wave-effect wallpaper and chandelier globes for an added “wow.” In the kitchen, Russo expanded upon an octagon-shaped eating area with a custom banquette and upholstered, performance-fabric seating. The island is new, with its white quartz countertops, but the cabinets are refreshed with Benjamin Moore’s Frostine white and a white marble herringbone backsplash from Tiled Interiors and Kitchens by Yubir. The family room is yet another gathering area, perfect for daily

action as well as get-togethers. In front of the original stone fireplace, Russo set two identical chaises for cozy nights with a novel, while also providing a U-shaped ivory sectional for TV viewing. Dual cocktail tables of reclaimed wood stand up to wear and tear, while unlined linen draperies keep it casual and airy. Most everywhere Russo amplified function, and the entry foyer is no exception, with double-duty pieces such as a Noir console table and velvet ottomans. Abstract artwork above the stairs in saturated color is a hint of what’s to come. For the master bedroom, the couple wanted the feel of a retreat with wall-to-wall carpet—enter Russo with a mottled blue-and-gray pattern. The king-sized bed boasts a tufted headboard by Universal Furniture that extends over the nightstands—just right for a room of royal proportions. Completing the look are a leather bench and starburst art. Did this upgrade rise to the challenge of daily life and social occasions, with plenty of seating carefully blended into the everyday design? Judging from guests’ reactions, Sonya gives a resounding yes. The redesign is great for watching sports or just hanging out. When guests convene, says Sonya, “The joke is always, ‘Are they on the VIP list?’” And, of course, with their own game room, theater and candy bar, the kids make the A-list every day. After an inspired redesign, a guest bathroom in West Long Branch punches way above its weight.

SMALL SPACE, BIG IMPACT

{ PERSONAL SPACE }

With three children all grown up and in nests of their own, it was time for change back at the ranch they left behind in West Long Branch. The hall bathroom where the kids had spruced up for school was showing its age, with a shower/tub in a dated mix of beige tiles and green walls. The traditional-style room had remained basically unchanged since the house was built a half-century before. “I was really tired of looking at a tired bathroom that wasn’t really functional for our growing family,” says the homeowner. Now, when the kids and their kids come to visit, they enjoy luxe contemporary ease thanks to the room’s 2020 redesign by Sheila Rich Interiors. With a comfort height vanity and dual vessel sinks that minimize bending, it’s just as accommodating for the couple’s older friends. “These homeowners required a bathroom that would add value to their house, that guests of all ages and stages could use comfortably,” says Rich. “And they wanted a “wow” factor. They wanted all that in a small bathroom, which this does in a nice way.” Surrounded by metal penny rounds in silver, gray and charcoal, the huge mirror above the gray vanity creates the feeling of depth. “Because it’s a small bathroom, the colors are muted,” says Rich, but a variety of geometric shapes such as square Kohler sinks with square polished-chrome MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

faucets build on the room’s overall wow. The penny rounds by Glazzio from Ideal Tile find their size contrast in the large-format, easy-care porcelain tile that mimics statuary marble and contributes to an open feel. “Everything is very linear, no extra [grout] lines,” Rich says. (Score one more for openness.) Designed by Rich, the seven-foot-wide double vanity complements the faux marble’s veining with its gray cabinetry and white quartz top. To free up floor space, the vanity’s makeup area conceals a stool, a streamlined toilet is tucked away in an alcove and a recessed medicine cabinet fits into the side wall but opens easily. Above the vanity, two cylindrical LED lights contribute clean lines and polished chrome finishes in harmony with the faucets and cabinet doors. “It’s a small bathroom that functions large,” says Rich of the remodel, which received an award in 2020 from the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), New Jersey Chapter. One highlight for the homeowner is the full walk-in shower, which stands out for the continuation of that largeformat tile visible through the rimless shower door. The design is not only elegant, but ageless, because of safety features such as a quartz seat, grab bar and 2x2-inch skid-resistant shower floor tiles.

Clockwise from top: An oversized mirror set in metal penny-round tiles gives the illusion of a larger space, while a comfort-height vanity offers dual sink convenience. The makeup counter gets a punch from 12x24-inch tile installed on the horizontal for greater effect. The walkin shower is big on comfort, with a quartz seat and shelving. Vessel sinks and faucets offer a geometric flair, both square in contrast to the penny rounds.

ENDLESS SUMMER

Beachy good vibes mark the redesign by which a Sea Girt vacation home ups its game for year-round use. By Donna Rolando Design by Mary Catherine McCarthy Photography by Sara Stadtmiller

Golden years reveling in the golden rays of the Jersey Shore—that’s one Hoboken couple’s notion of an idyllic retirement setting. The summer home they purchased two years ago in Sea Girt, just a bike ride from the beach, already fit the bill in myriad ways. But for the style and function of a “forever” home, as owners Roseanne and Bob envisioned, it would take a designer’s touch. Enter Monmouth-based designer Mary Catherine McCarthy with a plan to match the couple’s lifestyle and max the colonial’s party potential—because any Shore spot is bound to draw guests. “They wanted to entertain more and have their house be more of an open plan and more open to the beautiful pool in the backyard,” says McCarthy.

What does it take to elevate a summer getaway to “forever” home status? Designer Mary Catherine McCarthy gave her clients an easy-breezy layout with blue tones reflective of the ocean and brushed-nickel pendants to highlight a vaulted ceiling.

That was a tall order for a 10x10 kitchen saddled with a peninsula that, McCarthy says, lacked purpose. Eliminating that peninsula doubled the kitchen’s available space and opened the door to possibilities. “Our first design challenge was to renovate the 20-year-old kitchen layout to incorporate an entertaining island and a bar area with a beverage center and a bar sink,” McCarthy says. “By relocating and replacing the existing sliding door, in switching the location of a window we repurposed, we were able to extend the kitchen floor plan to meet the clients’ requests.” Roseanne says the remodel works so well they are staying here more often—even before retirement. “Function is through-the-roof, immensely better,” she says. “It’s wonderful to entertain in.” And why not? McCarthy used newfound space to grant the couple a full bar with a wine cooler and storage. For the style aspect of this design, the couple wanted to reflect the seashore. SherwinWilliams’ Bunglehouse Blue gave the island a punch as a beachy contrast to white cabinets (Fieldstone Cabinetry) and Calacatta quartzite counters in a leathered super white (Bedrock Granite). With their wavy blue pattern, the

sliding-door curtains also evoke the beach (MCM/Studio, McCarthy’s private label), while the metal island stools (Wayfair) add a touch of aqua. Besides color, the project drew inspiration from the two-story vaulted ceiling now highlighted with brushed-nickel pendants. Roseanne loves how the space has brightened. Not to be overlooked is a stretch of beadboard ceiling—another Shore hallmark. As common threads in the design, McCarthy treated the entire backsplash to glazed handmade Italian tile (Nemo Tile), used Benjamin Moore’s Bleeker Beige as a color constant and repaired the oak-toned engineered wood flooring for the long haul. A style so pretty McCarthy likened it to jewelry is the hammered steel accentuating the cabinetry’s 39 custom pulls and knobs—an element echoed in the bar’s circular sink. As with many projects started during 2020, McCarthy and her team faced pandemic challenges. For the job’s success she credits the “extraordinary collaboration” among contractors: A to Z Home Improvements, Rymar Plumbing, Herbert Electric and Allen’s Painting & Wallpaper.

From left to right: Free of a space-hogging peninsula, the kitchen has been reborn with an island, a full bar and top-line appliances such as a GE Profile Convection Oven. A circular sink in hammered steel gives the bar area a unique flair; it’s pictured here with an antique oyster plate. A trio of stainlesssteel sconces (Wayfair) above the windows create dramatic bar lighting.

MARGHERITA PIZZA Yields: 2 pizzas

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

For the toppings: n generous 2 cups tomato sauce or pizza sauce (preferably homemade) n 1 lb. 2 oz. buffalo mozzarella n a few leaves fresh basil n extra-virgin olive oil

Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise for 2 hours. Fold the dough once after 1 hour. Turn the dough out onto a floured work surface and divide it into two equal pieces using a bench scraper. Roll out or stretch each piece of dough, without tearing it, to the dimensions of two 10x14 inch baking sheets. Line the baking sheets with parchment paper and carefully transfer the dough onto the paper. Cover loosely and let rise for 1 hour, until slightly puffed.

For the pizza dough: n 1¼ cups water n 2 tsp. salt n 3¾ tsp. sugar n 4 cups + 2 Tbsp. bread flour n 0.35 oz. fresh yeast, or 3.5 oz. refreshed levain + 0.2 oz. fresh yeast n ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil

Prepare the pizza dough: Place the water, salt, sugar, flour and yeast in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook. Knead for 5 minutes on speed 1, followed by 5–6 minutes on speed 2. Two minutes before the end of the kneading time, drizzle in the olive oil with the mixer running. Continue kneading until smooth.

Top and bake the pizzas: Preheat the oven to 500°F. Spread the tomato sauce over the dough in an even layer, then slice the mozzarella and scatter it over the sauce. Bake each pizza for 8–10 minutes, until the crust is golden and crisp. Scatter the basil leaves over the top, drizzle with a little olive oil and serve right away.

PISSALADIÈRE Yields: 4 servings

INGREDIENTS:

n 1¾ lb. onions n 1 clove garlic n 2 springs thyme n 4 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, divided n 1 Tbsp. sugar n 14 oz. pizza dough n 1.75 oz. anchovy filets, marinated or packed in oil n 1 handful black olives n salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS:

Peel the onions and slice them thinly. Peel the garlic clove and crush them using a garlic press. Wash and dry the thyme sprigs well and remove the leaves. Discard the stems. Heat 3 Tbsp. of the olive oil in a large sauté pan over low heat. Add the onions, garlic and thyme and stir until well blended. Stir in the sugar, then season with salt and pepper. Cover and cook for 20–30 minutes, stirring often with a wooden spoon, until the onions are meltingly tender but still pale. Near the end of the cooking time, remove the lid to allow any excess liquid to cook off. Remove from the heat and let cool. Place a rack in the center of the oven and preheat the oven to 450°F. Meanwhile, turn the dough out onto a floured work surface, shape it into a ball and let it rest for 20 minutes. Roll or stretch the dough to fit a 10x14 inch baking sheet, either nonstick or lined with parchment paper. Scatter the onions over the dough, then drain the anchovies and arrange over onions. Sprinkle with black olives and drizzle with the remaining olive oil. Bake for 15–20 minutes until lightly golden. Serve warm or at room temperature.

MONMOUTH COUNTY’S

LAWYERS 2021 TO HELP YOU FIND SOME OF THE BEST ATTORNEYS IN MONMOUTH COUNTY, across 30 different specialties, Monmouth Health & Life commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of hundreds of practicing and active lawyers across the county. They were asked to select peers whom they deem are the best within their specialty areas and whom they would seek out for particular legal needs. PRS checked with the New Jersey state bar to make sure that those attorneys receiving the highest vote totals within each specialty area are active and practicing before finalizing the Top Lawyer list. Inclusion in the Top Lawyer list cannot be purchased; it is solely based on the attorney’s standing amongst their peers. We recognize that there are many good attorneys who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within Monmouth County.

{ POWER FOOD }

The Joy of Ginger

This plant won’t win any beauty contests, but for centuries it’s been a tasty food ingredient—and a medication. The knobby-looking brown ginger root has a venerable history, a distinctive mellow-sweet taste and a host of health benefits. Sprawling out from the Far East, this tangy product of the plant Zingiber officinale has been a part of the culinary world in Asia for thousands of years (Confucius reputedly consumed ginger at every meal), as well as an abundant presence in medicine in Japan, China and India since the 1500s. Ginger—the word derives from the Sanskrit term “srngaveram” or “horn body”—is called a root but is technically a rhizome, which means it grows horizontally underground, not straight down. Ginger was brought from Asia in the spice trade; Spanish explorers introduced it to South America, so that region could in turn export ginger back to Europe. Europeans’ enthusiastic reception of the valuable import allowed them to get creative, flavoring their food and innovating. It’s said that Queen Elizabeth I invented the gingerbread man, now renowned as a holiday treat. Because of the cost of importing it and the labor of harvesting it, ginger became a prized commodity among the wealthy. In fact, in medieval England one pound of the spice derived from the ginger root could reportedly be traded for one whole live sheep—of course, that needs to be adjusted for inflation.

and can be destroyed in cooking). Its main bioactive ingredient is gingerol, which is known for beneficial anti-inflammatory properties. Indeed, a 2011 study of mice and rats in Cancer Prevention Research indicated that, compared with a placebo group, a ginger-eating group showed lower levels of inflammatory markers in “gut tissue… highly associated with developing precancerous polyps, or cancerous polyps,” as a researcher explained. An older study found that sailors who’d consumed ginger had substantially fewer symptoms of seasickness than those who hadn’t. Ginger also has phytochemicals, which aid the gastrointestinal system in regulating itself and expelling toxins. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, part of the National Institutes of Health, says that while research does support ginger’s efficacy for mild pregnancy-associated nausea, “most studies of ginger for motion sickness haven’t shown it to be helpful,” and the jury’s still out on its use for postoperative nausea. Meanwhile, the University of Maryland Medical Center advises that adults shouldn’t take more than four grams per day, children less. If you’re using ginger root for medical purposes, of course, check first with your doctor.

POWER UP Ginger root has historically been used to combat nausea and sometimes to fight cold and flu symptoms. It’s rich in the minerals potassium (more than bananas!) and magnesium, and it contains vitamins B and C (though these vitamins are heat-sensitive

BUY/STORE/SERVE You’ll find ginger in most grocery store produce sections—look for solid pieces with smooth skin. Wrinkling or crackling may indicate age, and age matters. The younger ginger roots you find can be cut thin and are slightly tender in texture. The older the root gets, the more oils it develops, and the tougher and spicier it becomes. Because ginger has so much potential, you really need to know what you’re looking for. If it’s just a bit of spice or snap to what you’re eating, you may wish to go with the spice and avoid the labor of cutting it from the root itself. But if you’re crafty and know what you’re doing in the kitchen, getting ginger by the fresh root does allow you more of the health benefits and a fresher flavor. Leftovers kept in a tightly sealed plastic bag can keep for up to eight weeks in the refrigerator. With sliced pieces, the freezer usually does a better job of maintaining quality. When cutting, use a paring knife with considerable caution or, failing that, the edge of a spoon. This’ll allow you to take off the skin of the root, so you’ve got nothing but the meat of the ginger in your preferred dish or drink. You can treat ginger as you would any vegetable, chopping it, mincing, even julienning. If steeped in hot water with a bit of honey, it makes a nice tea. Ginger pickled in sugar and vinegar can be offered as gari, a palate cleanser between dishes, Japanese in origin. It thrives as a garnish, especially for steamed vegetables. The possibilities are legion, as are this food’s many claims to fame. Ginger ale, ginger beer, gingerbread or ginger snaps, anyone? —Brian Kelley

DID YOU KNOW? You can plant ginger yourself from the roots you find in any grocery store. Cut it into ½-inch pieces, soak it in water and then let it sit for a day or two to callous before planting. MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

“This photo was taken at the Manasquan Beach with the Manasquan Inlet in the background. Hurricane Henri made excellent conditions up the entire east coast for surfing for a rare summertime swell. I do not surf myself, but Manasquan is one of the most popular places to surf so I know there will always be someone there to shoot. I haven’t been able to find out the identity of this surfer, but I would love to get this photo in his hands.”
