WELCOME LETTER

HERE’S TO A HEALTHY 2018 THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY IS NOT JUST ABOUT VALENTINES. February is also American Heart Month. As you are choosing your Valentine’s Day cards, take a moment to think about how you’d like to continue to savor special moments with your loved ones for years to come. At RWJBarnabas Health, our tagline, “Your heart doesn’t beat just for you. Get it checked,” reflects this sentiment. And now, a new cardiac program at Monmouth Medical Center is offering convenient access to an innovative, minimally invasive surgical procedure that repairs damaged heart valves in patients with aortic stenosis. In this issue, you’ll read about Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), an alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement that is offering our cardiac patients a quicker recovery, less pain, fewer complications and a shorter hospital stay. We are proud to announce our new TAVR Screening Program is offered in conjunction with the structural heart team at our sister hospital Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. We are proud to be a part of an award-winning cardiac care hospital network serving the tristate area. In addition to performing more TAVR procedures than any other health system in the state, RWJBarnabas Health has one of the three largest heart transplant programs in the nation and the largest pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery programs in the state. We also are proud to welcome Isaac H. Tawfik, M.D., as chief of cardiology. Dr. Tawfik brings years of interventional cardiology experience to his new position, and joins Barnabas Health Medical Group (BHMG) Cardiology Services–Monmouth, our new dedicated cardiology practice offering access to New Jersey’s top cardiologists right in your neighborhood. Our cardiology practice’s expert team is skilled in all aspects of heart care; developing coordinated, individualized treatment plans for cardiac patients of all ages. (See details on page 28.) Additionally, we are dedicated to improving the health of the populations we serve—far beyond the care we provide within the walls of our hospital—and continue to make significant strides in expanding our primary care network. Also in collaboration with BHMG, we opened a primary care office in Shrewsbury in June and just recently opened a primary care office in Eatontown. (See details on page 30.) This period of unprecedented growth at Monmouth Medical Center is an affirmation of our dedication to excellence in healing, teaching and caring. We are continuously looking forward to better serving our community by making medical advancements through cutting-edge technology such as TAVR and expanding our primary and specialty care programs out into the community. Wishing you a heart healthy 2018.

3 Myths about Women and Money W

ELCOME to the latest edition of Fiscal Fitness. 2017 was an amazing year, to say the least. The stock market made record highs, tax reform finally passed, the economy showed significant signs of improvement, and the positive momentum continues in 2018. I am optimistic about the future but also recognize that it’s prudent to assess your financial situation when times are good. As many of you know, I have been an advocate for women, helping them take control of their financial future since I started in the business 25 years ago. What bothers me most, as a woman business owner, is how women investors are continually put into a category—that we are all the same and need special investments just for “us girls”. ONE SIZE FITS ALL We are unique individuals, with goals and objectives that many times does not warrant a cookie cutter approach, or an investment strategy generated by an on-line questionnaire. Being in a male dominated industry, I enjoy reading industry related articles that try to help advisors successfully work with women investors. I have attended workshops that attempt to teach my male counterparts how to speak to women investors. Unfortunately, the approach is more often technical than personal, failing to recognize the numerous challenges women face. How about you ask me something about my life and my family or what keeps me up at night? I am not really interested in hearing how you beat the market last year. POOR MONEY MANAGERS Believe it or not, we are very good at managing the day to day household finances. At the same

time, we are taking care of our children, aging parents and building careers. We are, unfortunately, behind on investing in ourselves. I advise so many successful women— business owners, executives and newly independent women, who, like me, are juggling it all. Does the idea of having your own personal CFO to guide you in the right financial direction makes sense? How about an experienced professional who will collaborate with you and your other advisors to devise a plan specifically for you and your family’s circumstance? LACK INVESTMENT KNOWLEDGE It’s been my personal experience that many of my clients have let their significant other handle the investments, rather than taking a joint approach. As women, we tend to take our time before making an investment decision and want a clear understanding of what our investments can do for our future. The percentage return is meaningless if it isn’t fulfilling a dream or a financial goal. As women, we are living longer and are outliving our male counterparts. It’s also true that many women are behind in their retirement savings due to being out of the workforce to raise families or take care of aging parents. We already know this. The deer in headlights approach to your money is not an option in today’s world. Now is your time to do something about it. Like the song says, What Are You Waiting For?

EDITOR’S NOTE

LET’S GET PERSONAL

THERE’S MORE TO PERSONAL style than looking good. What you wear affects your mood and certainly your confidence too! Typically in spring, we think about bright hues to break free of the winter doldrums. But you certainly don’t have to wait for the change of season to add some cheer—check out our women’s fashion feature beginning on page 32, where our sartorial experts hand out hints on wearing florals during the colder months. In pulling this year’s new crop of men’s clothes and accessories, we focused on texture and fabric, and it turns out the choices are as varied as your many moods. Turn to page 38 for a peek at the hottest shirts, shoes, belts and more. What else makes you feel your best? Is it a great sapphire ring or pair of earrings? Flip to page 15 and see which you prefer. Certainly a good workout will boost your mood, so you’ll need a stylish gym bag to carry your gear. Take a look at the collection we’ve curated on page 14. Looking for other ways to beat the winter blues? Try enjoying the snow for a change by taking advantage of the late-season deals and events at a nearby ski resort. On page 42, we highlight five of the best ski/snowboard areas—all within driving distance—that provide thrills and spills (the fun kind!) for all ages. Of course, the always perky Kristin Chenoweth brings life to a room. In an exclusive interview with Monmouth Health & Life, the Broadway/film/television star discusses her happy demeanor, a love for all things Dolly Parton and the remaining items on her bucket list (page 44). Of course, there’s so much more in this issue. In Local Buzz, get the latest on two familiar eateries—Fromagerie in Rumson and Flames in Belmar—and find out where you can buy farm fresh produce all year long! And speaking of food, we feature three must-try sanwiches on page 62; they’re each a sophisticated take on between-the-bread options. Meteorologists promise that spring will come, and we promise you’ll love this issue. Enjoy!

AMERICAN HEART MONTH February is American Heart Month, and one way to observe it—and raise awareness—is to wear red throughout the month. Meanwhile, you can take the following steps to protect your own heart health: Eat healthier: The Mayo Clinic recommends controlling portion sizes and sodium intake by using a small bowl for high-calorie, high-sodium meals, and a larger plate for low-calorie nutritious meals made with heart-healthy fruits, veggies and whole grains. Exercise more frequently: Total-body, non-impact activities like swimming and rowing are the most beneficial to your heart health—the more muscles involved in an exercise, the harder your heart has to work. The YMCA of Western Monmouth County in Freehold has a number of swimming classes and aquatic programs for everyone from infants to seniors. Schedule a check-up: Make an appointment with a cardiac expert at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, and see how your heart health measures up. The center also offers a cardiac support group that provides information for those with heart disease and their families.

A FRESH START Fromagerie, a Rumson institution serving contemporary American cuisine, is open once again under new ownership. Business entrepreneurs Paul and Enilda Sansone have revamped the restaurant with an updated menu, new staff and a freshly instated happy hour on Tuesdays to Fridays from 4 to 6:30 p.m., with small plate and drink specials. For dinner, guests can choose from entrées like gnocchi with lobster, cowboy ribeye with compound butter and French fries, and halibut and oreganata, which is Fromagerie’s signature dish. The restaurant offers event space and a private bar for parties and corporate events, and Fromagerie promises that its event coordinator Katherine Myszka will be there to help every step of the way. Long skewers of pork, beef and chicken are brought over and carved right at the table; for veggie lovers, there are full-service hot and salad bars with grilled veggies and mixed greens plus fresh ceviche. NATIONAL MARGARITA DAY

With a number of blood donation centers and drives around Monmouth County, it’s easy to help those in need of a life-saving transfusion. Hospitals are looking for suitable donors of all blood types—all you have to do is set up an appointment—so in the spirit of American Heart Month, head to one of these places:

Forget Tequila Tuesday—it’s all about National Margarita Day on Thursday, February 22! And to make things even sweeter, Monmouth bars are serving up the signature cocktail with some delicious twists. We’ve got suggestions on what to try first and where. ¡Salud!

American Red Cross You can find out about blood drives in your area on the center’s website and even learn how to host your own. Call your local American Red Cross with any and all questions.

NEW & NOTEWORTHY

Do you want the best skin of your life? Of course you do! But if the thought of a painful procedure and extended healing time is a turn-off, you’re in luck: The Skin & Wellness Center in Eatontown offers a number of non-invasive procedures that are almost painless and provide immediate results. Dermaplaning, for one, removes dead cells on the epidermis, along with fine hair or “peach fuzz.” Using a scalpel and delicate touch, the center’s aesthetician simply abrades the skin using light feathering strokes that are safer than chemical peeling agents and deliver a deeper exfoliation. The treatment is popular in sunny California and Florida, so it might be just what you need before summer arrives.

Howell Donor Center CJBC’s second location is off of Rte. 9 in Howell, and residents can donate blood and plasma there. The blood center’s website has information on monthly blood drives and how interested locals can host their own.

Be your best inside and out! HAVING A COSMETIC PROCEDURE doesn’t always guarantee happiness. But Dr. Thomas Theocharides (“Dr. T.” of Beginnings Aesthetic & Wellness) can help you achieve a more beautiful you, both inside and out. Though he’s always at the forefront of groundbreaking non-surgical cosmetic procedures and technology, he’s also committed to guiding patients on all levels of well-being from proper nutrition to spirituality, including prayer which is offered, but never imposed. “Genuine health starts on the inside,” says Dr. Theocharides, a highly accomplished cosmetic surgeon and board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist. It’s not just what you put into your body that affects how you look and feel, he says. Your behavior and mental focus, as well as your food choices, affect both your levels and number of receptors of dopamine and levels of serotonin, two critical neurotransmitters that impact our experiences of happiness and joy. Dr. Theocharides explains, “By promoting elevated serotonin levels along with anti-aging treatments we help you foster genuine and lasting beauty, inside and out!” Women can also increase their physical and emotional joy through a groundbreaking non-surgical cosmetic procedure called ThermiVa®, developed for women with vaginal challenges due to childbirth or aging. ThermiVa® improves sexual satisfaction, bladder control and vaginal dryness, all with no down time. For a more youthful appearance, two FDA-approved fillers, Bellafill® and Sculptra®, help restore the volume loss of the aging face and can last up to five years. With all that Beginnings Aesthetics & Wellness has to offer, you can be as happy as you make up your mind to be.

MOST OBSTETRICIANS AND MIDWIVES realize that chiropractic care of the spine and pelvis during pregnancy can help create the perfect environment for a baby to develop and begin living his or her best life. Any pelvic or sacral misalignment, tightening or torsion may affect the position of the baby within the womb, limiting the baby’s ability to move into the best position for birth. The baby’s inability to properly move or maneuver often results in a breech presentation. With the right support from chiropractic care, sacral and pelvic misalignments can be corrected, allowing the baby to align ideally within the pelvis. Since 2002 when I established my practice, I have helped patients of all ages and walks of life. In the past seven years, however, I have seen an increase in pregnant women with babies in breech positions. Obstetricians typically elect to deliver a breech baby by C-section. However, since it is universally understood that delivering a baby naturally is the best way to have a less stressful, less risky birth more obstetricians and midwives are referring moms to our office for care. Through advanced training in the Webster Technique and Active Release Technique, I’ve had incredible success assisting moms in transitioning a breech baby into a normal presentation. Together, these techniques safely analyze and determine which ligaments are restricted and impacting the baby’s presentation. I use precise and gentle adjustment techniques to alter the mom’s pelvic muscle and ligament tension so a baby can move into the best position for birth. In addition to pregnant moms, we offer newborn assessments, adjustments for babies suffering from colic or torticollis, pediatric check-ups, care for athletes seeking enhanced performance, weekend warriors with sprains & strains as well as seniors seeking to improve or regain critical quality of life.

Do you hate insurance companies? PEOPLE GENERALLY DON’T TRUST insurance companies. The impression is that they take your money and when the time comes to put in a claim, you’re denied. Insurance is expensive, complex, necessary and it’s never perfect. Very few people really know what their coverage can do and people avoid what they don’t understand. If you don’t trust insurance companies, why then deal directly with one? Independent insurance agents are not employed, nor do they work for any insurance company. They represent many insurance carriers, not just one and they have only your best interests in mind. Rely on them for guidance when comparing costs, risk identification, coverage selection and most importantly, claim assistance. The more companies an independent agent represents, the better job they can do for you. Here’s how having insurance, along with an agent, is critical to helping you live your best life. Insurance, and life, are expensive: Years ago, most people worked things out in a cordial way but now, the legal environment has become increasingly active with lawsuits. Additionally, laws and ordinances are changing at the speed of light to ensure safety, environment or social impact. The insurance industry works to meet those needs to protect its policy holders. Insurance, and life, are never perfect. If insurance covered every claim, no one could afford to pay for it. Exclusions exist for several reasons, so the insurance company can protect its clients and itself against a number of factors including total catastrophe. There are other policies that are better suited for individuals in need of a very specific coverage.

“We might never persuade you to like your insurance company, but rather, we can influence you to love your insurance agent.” –GREGORY S. WRIGHT

Gregory S. Wright PRESIDENT AND CEO

As opposed to a captive agent that represents a single insurance company, John B. Wright is an independent insurance agency that works for you, as opposed to the insurance companies. In that capacity, our approach is personal in every sense of the word. There are no one-size-fits-all solutions when it comes to insurance. Every client represents a unique set of circumstances that ultimately determines the type and amount of coverage needed to protect his or her family and assets. WHERE CAN YOU and your family find a place to work out that touches your lives in a more meaningful way than you ever thought possible for a gym? Southpaw is the vision of Vic Lashley (“Lash”), a former Army Kick/Boxer, Corrections officer/ State Police defensive tactics instructor and highly trained natural athlete who now trains celebrities, pro athletes, "white collar" enthusiasts, as well as kids, families and fighters. “We’re not your typical gym,” says Lash. “Members always have individualized attention and guidance. Our members are our family and we treat them as such. Our training methods embody the whole person: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. You really can’t change the outside and not the inside.” Lash reflects on how a member with Parkinson’s progressed from lifting one pound to 15 pounds, achieving a task beyond what the doctors said was possible. “It’s more than just training your body, but empowering your whole being,” says Lash. One visit to Southpaw and you’ll see why you’ll be more than just physically fit.

HEART TO HEART

WITH CONVENIENT ACCESS TO AN INNOVATIVE TREATMENT FOR AORTIC STENOSIS, THE FUTURE FOR CARDIAC PATIENTS IS BRIGHT.

APPROXIMATELY 300,000 AMERICANS SUFFER FROM AORTIC stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic valve that occurs as a result of calcium deposits. If your doctor determines that heart valve replacement may be an option to treat aortic stenosis for you or a loved one, you want to ensure your heart is in the most capable hands. In the past, the only treatment available was open-heart surgery to replace the diseased valve. Now, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) has been approved for patients considered at high and intermediate risk for open-heart surgery.

26

A new cardiac program at Monmouth Medical Center is offering convenient access to this innovative, minimally invasive surgical procedure that repairs damaged heart valves without removing it in patients with aortic stenosis. Working in conjunction with the structural heart team at sister hospital Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC), the Monmouth Medical Center TAVR Screening Program works to determine patient eligibility for TAVR. Monmouth Medical Center’s TAVR Clinic includes a multidisciplinary team of cardiac surgeons, interventional cardiologists, radiologists and nurse practitioners who provide comprehensive testing to evaluate patients. Eligible patients undergo TAVR at NBIMC within two weeks of their initial consultation. Complimentary transportation for patients is available. Monmouth Medical Center Chief of Cardiology Isaac Tawfik, M.D., explains that TAVR is a transformational technology for patients with severe aortic stenosis that in addition to NBIMC is currently performed at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Saint Barnabas Medical Center, with an additional screening program at Jersey City Medical Center—all RWJBarnabas Health facilities. At these facilities, clinicians are performing more TAVR procedures than any other hospital or health care system in the state, with outcomes that far exceed national benchmarks. “The Monmouth Medical Center TAVR Screening Program represents our commitment to provide a comprehensive service offering of structural heart care to our local community,” Dr. Tawfik says. Because the aortic valve sits between the main pumping chamber of the heart (called the left ventricle) and the main blood vessel in the body (called the aorta), all of the blood in the body must flow through this valve. The narrowed valve restricts needed blood flow to the body’s

organs including the brain, heart and kidneys. Over time, people with aortic stenosis develop symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain and even loss of consciousness (syncope). “With TAVR, a synthetic valve is threaded through a blood vessel to the heart on the tip of a catheter,” according to Dr. Tawfik. “Stateof-the-art imaging is used to place the new valve, which begins to work immediately. Compared with surgical aortic valve replacement, patients opting for TAVR have a quicker recovery, less pain, fewer complications and a shorter hospital stay, with most patients going home the next day.” “Our outcomes far exceed national benchmarks in safety, life expectancy and risks of complications,” says Mark J. Russo, M.D., M.S., an internationally known expert on heart valve disease and attending cardiac surgeon at Newark Beth Israel and Saint Barnabas

Medical Center. Dr. Russo is teaming with Interventional Cardiologist Bruce J. Haik, M.D., RWJBarnabas Health System Director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories and the cardiac team at Monmouth on the hospital’s TAVR program. Dr. Russo, who serves as director of the Center for Aortic Diseases, director of Cardiothoracic Surgery Research and director of Structural Heart Disease, specializes in complex and reoperative aortic and valvular surgery. Dr. Haik, who practices as an attending Interventional Cardiologist at Newark Beth-Israel and Saint Barnabas Medical Center as well as Monmouth and Community Medical Center, has performed more than 10,000 cardiac procedures including complex angioplasty and TAVR. To achieve the best possible patient outcomes, Dr. Russo and Dr. Haik use leading-edge technologies, including minimally invasive, endovascular, and hybrid approaches such as TAVR.

After earning his medical degree at Temple University School of Medicine, Dr. Tawfik completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UMDNJ—Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He then went on to complete two fellowships: The first was a cardiology fellowship at UMDNJ—Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, followed by an interventional cardiology fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Over the years, Dr. Tawfik’s research projects have included “Panel Reactive Screening and Treatment Practices Following Bridge to Transplant Ventricular Assist Device Placement,” which was published in the Transplantation Proceedings journal. He is also board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiology and by the National Board of Echocardiography. In his new role, Dr. Tawfik leads Monmouth Medical Center’s Cardiac Services Department. The hospital has earned a host of impressive national accreditation and rankings, which attest to its commitment to cardiac excellence. Monmouth has received Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification for Acute Coronary Syndrome, Cardiac Rehabilitation and Stroke, as well as the Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure Gold Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. This recognition that signifies the hospital has reached an aggressive goal of treating heart failure patients for at least 90 days with 85 percent compliance to core standard levels of care outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology secondary prevention guidelines for heart failure patients. MMC’s cardiac services regional leadership in cardiac excellence was demonstrated by its selection by The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) among just nine U.S. hospitals for its Mentor Hospital Registry for Heart Failure. Monmouth was the only New Jersey hospital tapped for this volunteer initiative to provide support, advice, clinical expertise and guidance to hospitals seeking help with their health care improvement efforts. Dr. Tawfik joins the team of dedicated heart specialists that comprise BHMG Cardiology Services– Monmouth (see box at right), and will see patients at their office located at 166 Morris Avenue, Second Floor, in Long Branch.

NO NEED TO WAIT FOR SPRING TO BREAK OUT SOME GREAT FLORAL DRESSES—PROVIDED YOU FOLLOW A FEW SIMPLE RULES. WE’RE HERE TO HELP.

Florals have been trending this winter, especially when cast in colors like deep red, evergreen and navy blue. Rich fabrics pair well with florals too—think satin, crushed velvet and leather. When all of these components come together, they make the perfect winter outfit.”

A great way to ensure you don’t look like a springtime bouquet in the dead of winter is to choose darker florals and more dramatic makeup. And when in doubt, go black: A black belt, tights or blazer will tone down any bright colors that you just can’t wait until spring to wear.”

LAST CALL AS WINTER WINDS DOWN, THERE’S NO BETTER TIME TO HIT THE SLOPES: DEALS AND SPECIALS ARE BEING OFFERED NEAR AND FAR, BECKONING LOCAL SKIERS TO ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS. BY DARIUS AMOS

TIRED OF SHOVELING, DUSTING THE WHITE STUFF from your car and driving cautiously during your evening commute? It’s time to actually enjoy the snow! Ski trips in February offer special benefits to those who can make them happen. In fact, this month is widely considered the best overall month to ski and snowboard: There is minimal risk of visiting a resort that is not fully open due to insufficient snow, and trail conditions are still chalky and winter-like rather than slushy and spring-like when mountains begin to warm. So if you haven’t gone downhill or slalomed yet, visit one (or two or three) of the following nearby resorts. They’re all powder-packed with snowy fun for all ages!

42

CAMPGAW MOUNTAIN

Mahwah Take the Garden State Parkway to the New York border (about 90 minutes from Rumson) and ski Campgaw, Bergen County’s only ski resort. The mountain is intimate but with ample space for all skiers and snowboarders. It features a large course for beginners (lessons are available), two double black diamond trails for experts and everything in between, so there’s a slope for every skill level. And if your local neighborhood hill has lost its luster, snow tubing at Campgaw is in full swing this month, providing thrills and spills (the fun kind, of course) for all ages.

MOUNTAIN CREEK RESORT

Vernon This bustling Sussex County resort just two hours north of Red Bank offers an adrenaline rush for friends, families, couples and X-Games hopefuls. A daily pass here is your ticket to eight lifts on four mountain peaks, each with trails suitable for all levels. Freestyle skiers and snow boarders head straight to the terrain park, where an assortment of moguls, rails, boxes and ramps await. The resort also holds a variety of events in February, including the Gate Crashers giant slalom race, the New Jersey Special Olympics Winter Games and the annual New Jersey Firefighters Ski Race.

MOUNT PETER SKI AREA

Warwick, N.Y. Macy’s started the Mount Peter ski area in 1936 to show off the department store’s ski apparel, and it’s been one of the Empire State’s most popular facilities ever since. Beginners can take advantage of free ski and snowboarding lessons, offered all winter long, while snow-loving vets will get thrills on the 14 trails. New for the season is the Quad Lift, a four-person chair that provides access to the beginner and intermediate slopes. A 600foot snow tubing hill is open every day for all thrill seekers.

SPRING MOUNTAIN

Spring Mount, Penn. A less-than-two-hour drive west of Middletown leads to this cozy, family-oriented resort. The mountain features seven main trails, two snowtubing runs and a terrain park—the perfect size for a casual skier/snowboarder or one who is just starting out. Think it’s too warm to ski? No worries: Spring Mountain has state-of-the-art snow guns that’ll keep the slopes with powder for the entire season. Take advantage of Sunday family nights for discounted rates and check out February’s schedule, which includes special programs like Men’s Day (every Wednesday) and Women’s Day (Thursdays) as well as events for businesses and college students.

CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN RESORT

Tannersville, Penn. With 35 slopes covering nearly 170 skiable acres, Camelback is one of the Northeast’s winter hotspots. Nestled in the Keystone State’s Pocono region, the mountain features the Nile Mile, a one-mile trail that includes an 800-foot vertical drop. (Daredevils, rejoice!) Rookies and novices can catch their breath: Camelback offers ski and snowboarding lessons for all ages as well as the largest snow tubing park in the country. The resort hosts special events throughout February, including the Sam Adams 3D Air & Après Show with Olympic snowboarding bronze medalist Scotty Lago (Feb. 10) and the Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Bear Plunge (Feb. 17).

ON THE TOWN

A CHAT WITH...

KRISTIN CHENOWETH SHE’S CONQUERED BROADWAY, FEATURE FILMS AND TELEVISION, EARNING EMMY AND TONY awards along the way. Now, ahead of her March 25 concert at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, Kristin Chenoweth talks about her undying devotion to Dolly Parton, how she prepared for Hairspray Live! in just four days and why (surprise!) she sometimes drops an f-bomb or two. Your name is synonymous with the word “perky,” but is there ever a day when Kristin Chenoweth wakes up on the wrong side of the bed?` [Sighs] Yes. And it happens more frequently than people want to hear about. But the truth is, I’m human. Overall, I am a happy person. I was raised to believe that you have a choice in life. Sometimes things can suck, but often, happiness isn’t just a feeling—it’s a choice. So you do have bad days? Yes. When I was New York recently, I had terrible jet lag—I’d arrived the night before— and I had to do a press day all day, which meant I had to go to a lot of different places by car. In NYC, while the President was in town. We were late everywhere—one of my biggest pet peeves is being late—and we actually missed a couple of events. So, you know, a couple of f-bombs might have flown out of my mouth. Was anyone surprised by that? My driver/security guy said, “K.C., I love it when you get mad…it’s the best.” [laughs] But you did get to most of those press events. Did you have to shake it off and put on the always-perky persona? I usually try to adjust myself, but sometimes, during an interview, I’m like, “Look, I’m not having the best day, so if you sense anything…” I flat-out tell them! So you never fake it? No! I can’t. I think that’s the biggest misconception about me—“Oh, she’s just faking it.” But if I have to, I say, “Look, I’m on my period,” or “Look, someone pissed me off,” or “I lost a job today” or “I don’t want to be here because I don’t feel good.” I just say it. Then I find that [the interview] actually ends up being more fun, or something surprising happens, and it ends up being all right. Legend has it that Dolly Parton is one of your idols. What do you love about her? You would think it’s her music, and that’s definitely what drew me to her as a child, but it’s that she is exactly who you want her to be. When you meet Dolly, she’s her authentic self. I’ve been at her concerts, and I swear, if I had a cup—a red Solo cup full of poison—and she was like, “Okay, ya’ll, drink up!”, I would. Because you just do what she says. She is truth and light; she’s everything I want to be. Wait—did you say you’d drink a cup of poison? Yes, that’s exactly what I said! If Dolly said to drink up, I’d be like, “All right!” That’s some serious devotion. Does your connection to Dolly stem from your upbringing? You’re both Southern belles. It must be. I even kind of sound like her, and that’s not on purpose.

You really do. There’s a clip of you singing “I Will Always Love You” (written and first performed by Parton) on YouTube, and you sound so much like her. I know! I was told that since I was a little bitty girl—“You sound just like a young Dolly”— even before I knew who Dolly Parton was. And of course, that made me really want to know who she was. She’s been working on a musical based on her life for some time now. Gee, do you possibly have any idea who should play her? Hmm, let me think. If you’ll give me just five minutes or so, I can come up with a couple of names. [Short pause] Um, ME, hello! I know that she has suggested that I play her—and I’d like that, but I want her to hurry up! Well, out of sight out of mind—you need to make your presence known. Believe me, I’m this close to moving to Dollywood. You originated the role of Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked—was it hard to leave and see someone else fill the part? Oh no, I loved it. It made me happy that the show continued and that people were filling these roles. My only desire and hope was that the creators would continue to let people put their own stamp on the roles, because I don’t think it’s fair to have them follow me or Idina [Menzel, who played Elphaba]. A few years back, you guest-starred on Hot in Cleveland. Was Betty White every bit as fantastic as we imagine? Yes, yes, yes—she’s exactly what you want her to be. Kind of like Dolly? Yes! I’m in my 40s now, and I’ve had the chance to meet and work with a lot of my idols. And I have to tell you, I have not been disappointed. Well, I’ve been disappointed once, but of course, I’m not going to tell you who that was. But everybody else has lived up to my expectations.

done as a scene, not a performance. And I just felt [Glee creator] Ryan Murphy really nailed it—he directed that. Before you appeared as Velma in Hairspray Live! for NBC, you said you thought the broadcast might give you cardiac arrest. What was it that worried you? I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for Velma, so I was coming in late, which they were fine with. They were like, “Hell, show up the day before.” But I came in four days before, in a role I’ve never done. I know the show, but I just didn’t know Velma very well, and I wanted to nail it. Plus, I am a klutz, and weird things happen to me. I don’t know what it is—I can just be standing there and something will fall on my head, I’ll fall in a hole, there’ll be a random wire… I just have that about me. And I thought, “Please, dear God, not on live television…” But supposedly, there was a wardrobe malfunction. What really happened with that? My bra strap fell out. You didn’t show anything, though, did you? No! People get all—well, you know how people are. They like to see what’s not there. Right! And they like to see what’s not there in life too. [laughs] You’ve done theater, television, ilm, albums…what else is on your bucket list? Writing a musical. That’s a big one—I want that so bad. I have a theater in Oklahoma that bears my name, and I’d like it to win a Tony award or produce a Tony-award winner. I would like it to have its due. And I’ve always wanted to host Saturday Night Live, but it’s just not going to happen. Why not? I’m not sure, but I can dream, can’t I? [laughs]

You played Annabeth Schott, deputy press secretary at the White House, on West Wing. What would she do if she were working with the current administration? She’d be regularly re-filling her Xanax prescription. Then she’d be advising the President the best that she could. I think her first rule of business would be taking his iPhone away.

Have you put your name in the running? Well, there was a time when they were interested and they said, “Get a big movie or a TV show,” and I did. I even won an Emmy, and it never happened [laughs]. I don’t know that there are lot of fans over there—honestly, I don’t know—but I still admire what they do, and I just love the show. And I feel like if I weren’t doing musical theater, I would have wanted to be in that job.

A lot of Glee fans name your performance of “Home” (from The Wiz) as a favorite. Do you have one you like best? I do—it’s “One Less Bell to Answer”/“A House Is Not A Home,” a duet that I did with Matthew Morrison. I loved it because it was

Let’s get a little personal: What kind of man wins over Kristin Chenoweth? They have to understand that I’m an artist first. And my time—the schedule is kind of gross. If they can hang with those two things and not be mad at me, then we’re all set. MONMOUTH HE ALTH & LIFE

POWER FOOD

One cool The Comeback Kid MOVE OVER, SAUERKRAUT! KIMCHI IS BEING HAILED AS BRUSSELS WERE ONCE NAMED AMERICA’S ‘MOST HATED A VERSATILESPROUTS SUPERFOOD THAT PACKS A NUTRITIOUS— VEGETABLE,’ BUT THEIR HEALTH BENEFITS ARE NOW EARNING THEM A AND TASTY—PUNCH. PLACE ON MANY A MENU. LESS THAN A DECADE AGO, IT SEEMED unlikely the Brussels sprout would eventually become a revered addition to the dinner table. In fact, in 2008 the cruciferous vegetable, a relative of cauliflower and broccoli, was named America’s “most hated vegetable” by a Heinz survey. It’s since soared in popularity, and whether or not you’re sold on the flavor—nutty with a balance of sweet and savory elements—the health benefits should serve as temptation enough to give them a shot.

POWER UP One cup of raw Brussels sprouts has only about 40 calories, 2 grams of sugar, 4 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber—a combination that earned the veggie a stamp of approval from the American Diabetes Association. It’s also loaded with vitamins and minerals, including about double (190 percent) the daily-recommended amount of vitamin K, which the body uses to help blood clot. (Note: Because of its high vitamin K content, people on blood thinning medications should talk to their physician before eating Brussels sprouts in excess.) It has 120 percent of the recommended value of vitamin C, which boosts immune function, and 15 percent of vitamin A (promotes healthy vision), manganese (builds bones and metabolizes energy), and folate (supports reproductive and heart health). One common complaint about Brussels sprouts is their sulfuric smell when cooking—that comes from

46

the presence of glucosinolates, a compound in all cruciferous vegetables. But those glucosinolates have a plus side: When digested, they form active compounds that may prevent certain cancers. For those deterred by the smell, cook the sprouts at a lower temperature or eat them raw.

BUY/STORE/SERVE Look for sprouts that are small, compact and relatively similar in size so that they cook evenly. They should look fresh, without bruised, browned or yellowed leaves. Once purchased, they will stay fresh in the refrigerator (in a sealed plastic bag) for about a week. You can also purchase sprouts still attached to the stalk, which will allow them to keep fresh longer.

An easy (and tasty) way to prepare Brussels sprouts is to roast them with extra virgin olive oil (you can even add some pork bacon or lean turkey bacon to enhance the flavor). Simply cut off the bottoms, slice the sprouts in half lengthwise and toss them with the oil, salt and pepper. Bake at 400˚F for 20–30 minutes, tossing occasionally, until browned on the outside. The leaves can also be roasted separately until crisp to eat as chips or used as a topping on pizza. In addition, you can serve the sprouts raw by shredding them and tossing with lemon and olive oil.

DID YOU KNOW? A recent recipe for Brussels sprouts sliders published by The New York Times caused a pre-Thanksgiving debate that might rival even a heated political discussion. It can be accessed on the Times website, complete with commentary.

MONMOUTH COUNTY’S

TOP

DENTISTS 2018 TO HELP YOU FIND GREAT DENTAL CARE, MONMOUTH HEALTH & LIFE magazine commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of hundreds of practicing and active dentists across the county. Dentists were asked to choose which of their peers they consider the very best, across seven different practice areas—endodontics, general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics. All the final honorees were fact-checked with the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System. The highest vote getters within each specialty who are in good standing with the state are included here in the second annual “Monmouth County’s Top Dentists” list. There are many other good dentists practicing in Monmouth County who may not be included on this list; we recommend that you consider “Monmouth County’s Top Dentists” and other resources before scheduling your next dental procedure.

SHAINA FELSENSTEIN, D.M.D. JAY FELSENSTEIN, D.D.S. NOT EVERY DENTIST can work with children. As with great teachers, it takes a special type of dentist to be able to connect with kids, in addition to training three more years after dental school to make sure children are appropriately treated. It’s these qualities that Dr. Jay Felsenstein and daughter Dr. Shaina Felsenstein have that led them to work together at Kids Dental Kare, founded by Dr. Jay, and voted by peers as a Top Dentist. “While I’m humbled for being nominated as a Top NJ Dentist, my authenticity, sincerity and devotion are some of the top strengths that have landed me here,” says Dr. Shaina. Choosing pediatric dentistry came naturally to Dr. Shaina. She grew up in and around her father’s pediatric dental office, taking cues from his quality dentistry and patient care and her

_MonmouthDentist_0218_final.indd 52

mother’s notable ability to make a patient and their family feel at home. Today, the well-being of their patients continues to be most important to both dentists. They’re able to wear many hats as pediatric dentists, from being as fun-loving, gentle and approachable as possible for children, while keeping a skilled, knowledgeable and reliable demeanor for their caretakers. “I found the greatest reward is making little ones feel comfortable in a situation that can often seem threatening and frightening,” says Dr. Jay, whose talents also include the ability to make children’s noses squeak. Included in the many ways they make children relaxed is the office environment, where team members are busy making balloon animals and kids are busy collecting prizes and playing video games in the reception area.

Kids can enjoy a pain-free treatment thanks to a current product, called Icon. “Icon is a pain-free topical liquid applied to teeth which helps change the appearance of unwanted white spots and discolored areas,” Dr. Shaina says. It’s one of the many ways this duo helps their young patients grow up with a healthy smile that will last a lifetime. Dr. Jay Felsenstein, known as “Dr. Jay,” grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Columbia University with a BA degree in Biology and graduated from the State University of New York School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook. He received his specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, New York. He’s a member of the American Dental Association, New Jersey Dental Association, American

Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and New Jersey Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Shaina Felsenstein, known as “Dr. Shaina,” is a board certified pediatric dentist. She’s an active member in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, New Jersey Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association and the New Jersey Dental Association. She keeps up to date with current dental topics to provide optimal patient care, striving to make the dental experience one of ease for both children and their parents. She attended Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Shaina completed her pediatric specialty training at Long Island Jewish Cohen Children’s Hospital, where she was appointed chief resident in her last year and developed the specialized skills needed to treat children individually.

DOUGLAS BLOCK, consistently awarded Top Dentist in New Jersey, grew up in a diverse neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY that taught him a depth of compassion and understanding which gives him the ability to communicate openly and honestly with his patients. “We stress maintaining open lines of communication with our patients and we want to hear their every concern,” says Dr. Block about his dedication to patient education. “We are accessible all the time.” Dr. Block is well known for his patience and for going above and beyond the time needed to explain options and treatments to patients of all ages. “Our patients have to feel confident they are making the best choices in treatment,” he says. The practice focusses on proper oral care and early detection. He offers expert services including all phases of general dentistry. Services also include in-office teeth whitening and Invisalign®.

_MonmouthDentist_0218_final.indd 54

As a young child, Dr. Block discovered an affinity for working with his hands and realized that he also wanted to enter into the health field so he could heal and comfort others. He found that dentistry would be the perfect fit to combine his passions and skills. A graduate of Georgetown University School of Dentistry, Dr. Block has now practiced dentistry for over 30 years. Dr. Block’s state-of-the-art office includes the latest technology, such as digital radiography, which administers treatment in an effective and comfortable manner. Digital scanning now takes impressions of a patient’s teeth without the traditional gag reflex traditional techniques would incur. Dr. Block also understand the benefit of offering nitrous oxide in his practice to calm fearful patients. Dr. Block is joined in his office with Dr. Charles Kocun who also practices general dentistry.

HAVING JOINED HIS FATHER IN PRACTICE IN 1997, Dr. Cuozzo, affectionately known as Dr. Pat, is proud to continue his family’s legacy of providing outstanding orthodontic services. He has received much recognition for his work, including the Timothy O. Heatwole Chair for Ethical Standards and Humanitarianism, a Certificate of Excellence from the Prosthodontic Honor Society and an award for Outstanding Achievement from the Academy of Operative Dentistry. Dr. Pat and his staff know that creating a beautiful smile requires the latest in technology, both for diagnosis and treatment purposes. He operates two state-of-the-art offices, one in Lincroft and the other in Sea Girt. Because Dr. Pat treats both adults and children, he offers convenient hours that allow for easier scheduling. He believes strongly in beginning treatment at the best appropriate time that will allow for excellent results in as short a time as

_MonmouthDentist_0218_final.indd 55

possible. His office is one of few in New Jersey to offer VATECH PaX-i3D Green CBCT technology. Because this system performs a 3D scan of a tooth or the entire jaw, it gives a detailed analysis of the mouth while using only a low dose of radiation. This one technique provides extraordinary accuracy, crucial to any diagnosis. Cuozzo Orthodontic Specialists offer traditional, clear and lingual braces, as well as Invisalign® for adults and teens. Taking impressions before Invisalign® treatment can be challenging for some patients. Dr. Pat uses digital technology to accomplish an accurate tooth impression. This technology works without messy molds that sometimes create discomfort for patients. Overall, it is considered to be less stressful than traditional impression methods. The entire staff at Cuozzo Orthodontic has a wealth of experience and has a reputation for professionalism, honesty and compassion when dealing with patients and family members.

She acquired her broad spectrum of dentistry skills not only from schooling, but from her mentorship with the prestigious Kois Center. “My thirst for knowledge never ends,” she explains about her need to question everything. Her work with the Kois Center inspires her practice’s standards, leading Dr. Oliverie to now mentor at this world-class evidence-based dental teaching center for esthetics, implants and restorative dentistry. Dr. Oliverie is also on the cutting edge of dental practice digital technology. She’ll soon offer critical new risk assessment software, developed by Dr. John Kois, that impacts and manages a patient’s overall health.

I AM HONORED to have been chosen again to be featured in the second annual Top Dentists issue. My success and reputation as a periodontist is due largely to my wonderful and caring staff and the strong relationship we have with our patients, many of whom have be coming to the practice for decades. I continue to strive to be on the cutting edge of technology in periodontal treatment. Through Aspire: Implant Dentistry Center we help people enjoy life more by helping them get rid of their dentures and partials. Dental implants are a major part of the practice but the patient’s periodontal health is always the cornerstone of our practice.
