BRINGING HEALTH TO YOUR HOMES HOME IS THE THEME of this issue of Monmouth Health & Life, and in the pages of our In Good Health section, we spotlight a Monmouth Medical Center patient who is able to remain at home despite difficult-to-manage chronic health conditions that often require frequent and lengthy hospital stays. Monmouth Medical Center was recently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as High Performing in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Heart Failure Care as part of the national magazine’s “Best Hospitals” issue for 2019-20. This recognition reflects the success of our Healthy Lives and Joel Opatut Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation programs, which have enabled patients like Middletown resident Dennis Bulmer to effectively monitor his heart failure and manage symptoms of the disease, as well as his COPD, preventing trips to the emergency department or hospitalizations. Our Healthy Lives Program is dedicated to helping patients become more actively involved in their care through education, access to a multidisciplinary team, and consistent follow up with a cardiac or pulmonary professional. The Healthy Lives Program also features a nationally renowned Telehealth monitoring program that is designed to help patients receive treatment at home. Additionally, our cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program is designed for individuals with heart and lung disease. Through active participation in this program, patients can improve their functionality and quality of life, while reducing the frequency of visits. We are thankful to our patients who share their stories of the role Monmouth Medical Center plays in helping them live healthier lives. Where you choose to get your health care matters, and for patients like Dennis, Monmouth Medical Center is delivering the care you need to remain where you want to be—at home.

IN HONOR OF THIS year’s home issue, allow me to share pearls of wisdom I’ve followed while decorating for fall. “I do not understand how anyone can live without one small place of enchantment to turn to,” noted Pulitzer Prize winner Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Indeed. I admit to having a penchant for a good quote. Yes, I know, they can be overdone, but I take comfort in them because who doesn’t need a pep talk from time to time, especially when doubt creeps in, forcing you to question your decisions, or worse, be lulled into inertia? So this autumn, curl up with your favorite design magazines and the latest issue of Monmouth Health & Life and decide to start a project that will take you out of your comfort zone and ultimately make you happier. To that end, on the pages that follow you’ll find plenty of ideas to rejuvenate a home. Take, for instance, the outdated Red Bank condo that an empty-nester couple wanted to redo. Designer Sheila Rich gave the homeowners a new layout that maximized space and took advantage of the waterfront view. Turn to page 32 to see the results. If you’re seeking new decorating ideas, perhaps you can draw inspiration from a recent vacation. The products we’ve curated on page 40 capture the culture of five popular travel destinations. We know many of them will fit nicely into your home. We do more than celebrate homes in this month’s issue. October is the only month when all four major pro sports are in full swing, so on page 48, we tell you about five quick getaways that revolve around the country’s top sporting events. It’s also the season when families soak up the great outdoors, from apple and pumpkin picking to fall foliage hikes. Turn to page 12 for places where you can enjoy a hayride. Friendly warning: Some of them have a spooky twist. After your autumn jaunts and when you get back and settle in, recall the words of poet and author (and New Jerseyan) Margaret Elizabeth Sangster: “There’s nothing half so pleasant as coming home again.” Enjoy the issue and welcome home.

KUDOS tained “ambassador” status. The student at Mater Dei Prep High School in Middletown was chosen to represent his school at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar, an annual four-day conference held at Kean University, where “ambassadors” from across the state gather to brush up on their leadership skills with presentations and group activities.
HIP, HIP, HOORHAYRIDES
■ You’ve undoubtedly seen A. J. Perri’s signature green trucks around Monmouth County—the business is one of the state’s leaders in plumbing and heating services, after all. And NJBiz has taken note, as the magazine has given its third annual Icon Honors Award to ALBERT PERRI SR., founder of the Tinton Falls-based HVAC company. The award recognizes prominent figures over age 60 in New Jersey business for success in and beyond their fields. At an awards ceremony in August, Perri’s son Kevin, company vice president, accepted the award on behalf of his dad, who is now retired.
Is it even really fall if you don’t take at least a sip of a pumpkin spice latte or enjoy an Instagram-friendly day picking apples or taking hayrides? We can help you out with that last one, as several Monmouth County farms and nurseries are hosting hayrides throughout the season. Here’s where and when: ■ A. CASOLA FARMS & GREENHOUSE in Holmdel’s activity slate is all decked out for fall, and it has hayrides (as well as other fun stuff like pony rides and a petting zoo) weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you’re in a spookier mood, take another trip on Saturday or Sunday from 7 to 10 p.m. for a haunted hayride to the ghoulish greenhouse. 178 RT. 32, HOLMDEL, 732.332.1533, ACASOLAFARMS.COM
■ WEST HAVEN FARMS in Allentown has open hours for hayrides on weekends, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., or on weekdays by appointment only. While you’re there, check out the farm’s corn maze, an annual spectacle that locals look forward to year after year. 725 RT. 524, ALLENTOWN, 609.259.2186, WESTHAVENFARMINC.COM
■ BATTLEVIEW ORCHARDS in Freehold focuses mainly on its market and on pick-your-own offerings—peaches, apples, pumpkins, the works—but it also offers fun hayrides to and from the orchards on weekends. 91 WEMROCK RD., FREEHOLD, 732.462.0756, BATTLEVIEWORCHARDS.COM
■ CHEESEQUAKE FARMS in Matawan puts a fun twist on hayrides with zombie paintball hayrides, in which riders shoot paintball guns mounted along the sides of the tractor at zombies along the way. Rides are offered Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and during the day on Saturday and Sunday at CF’s Route 9 location in Old Bridge, but call to confirm. P.S.: No kids under five are permitted. 191 RT. 34 MATAWAN, 732.583.6780, CHEESEQUAKEFARMS.COM

THE ADVENTURE IS COMING When it’s completed in the next two to four years, the mammoth Adventure Crossing in Ocean County’s Jackson promises to be the Northeast’s largest indoor entertainment and sports center. The $500 million project, right across from Six Flags Great Adventure, will have turf fields and courts on which to host statewide sports tournaments—and also restaurants, laser tag, an arcade, a training clubhouse and much more. Check out adventure sportsandentertainment.com as the project progresses.

A PLAYGROUND FOR ALL There’s an effort under way in Colts Neck to make sure no one misses out on fun. Spearheaded by Colts Neck Lions Club, Monmouth County Parks has built a new, sensory-friendly playground at Dorbrook Park especially for children with visual impairments. Colts Neck Lions Club raised more than $140,000 to build the Sensory Lions’ Den, as it’s called, which features oversized musical instruments, button-activated mists of water and its pièce de résistance, a spinning global motion dome. The park is expected to open to the public later this month.
KEEPING UP WITH THE JONASES
Before the Jonas Brothers took the stage in front of 8,000 fans at Asbury Park’s iconic Stone Pony music club for their pre-taped MTV Video Music Awards performance, Kevin, Joe and Nick of Wyckoff stayed at the Asbury Ocean Club. “Jersey boys,” Kev captioned an Instagram photo of himself and little bro Nick on their hotel balcony. Opened this summer, AOC is the Shore’s first five-star luxury boutique hotel.
CULINARY CORNER LET’S TACO BOUT IT
Eighteen years ago Surf Taco was born in a small Point Pleasant kitchen, and now it’s moving onto its 15th location, in Wall. Like the other stores, Wall’s Surf Taco will feature the brand’s famous menu of tacos, burritos, bowls, salads and wraps that pair perfectly with chips, fresh guacamole and salsa. The beachy vibe is another plus, and there’s a plan to feature painted murals from local artists on those Wall walls. • SURF TACO, 1818 RTE. 35, WALL, SURFTACO.COM
A NUMBER TO REMEMBER
We 100 percent recommend 100 Ocean, a new restaurant inside the brand-new Wave Resort on Long Branch’s oceanfront. The large eatery (with a sprawling waterside patio outside to match) is industrial chic in décor but Mediterranean in cuisine, with menu items ranging from avocado toast to fig and prosciutto flatbread and lobster ravioli. It serves brunch, lunch and dinner. • 100 OCEAN, 100 OCEAN AVE., LONG BRANCH, 732.795.6618, 100-OCEAN.COM
PANINIS PLUS PLUS
Don’t let the name deter you. Panini Grill, in Freehold where San Marzano used to be, sells way more than just pressed sandwiches. Choose from a wide array of Italian and American delicacies such as pastas, pizzas, meat entrees, salads and—well, yeah, paninis. Pro tip: Panini Grill has live entertainment on Tuesday nights, plus yummy specials such as the lobster mac-and-cheese panini that swap out weekly. • PANINI GRILL 31 E. County is attempting to limit pollution, one plastic bag at a time. The Red Bank borough RED Monmouth council voted unanimously in August to join other Monmouth municipalities like Atlantic Highlands BANK and Belmar in banning single-use plastic bags and styrofoam containers. Moreover, plastic straws be given to customers only upon request. It’s all in an effort to save the planet. One caveat: like BAN will those in some other towns, the ban in Red Bank has exceptions—it will not apply, for example, to plastic bags used by dry cleaners, by medical providers or for produce. You have until September 2020, when the law takes effect, to load up on reusable bags. MONMOUTH HE ALTH & LIFE

A DVERTI S EMENT
Planning
at Every Age
W
ELCOME to the latest edition of Fiscal Fitness! It’s the first day of fall and the end of the year is quickly approaching. Now is the perfect time to start thinking about some year-end planning strategies as well as keeping certain ages in mind as you plan for retirement.
50 AND OVER It’s crunch time! The good news is the IRS lets you put more tax-advantaged dollars away into retirement accounts. The “catchup” provision allows you to contribute an additional $6,000 into your 401k or 457 plan on top of the $19,000 contribution limit for 2019. For Traditional and Roth IRAs, it’s an additional $1,000 for a total of $7,000.1 If you are a non-working spouse, consider contributing to a spousal IRA. AGE 59 ½ For those needing to take a distribution, this is the earliest age to withdraw from an IRA or 401(k) without incurring a 10% penalty. There are exceptions to the rule. If you are age 55 or older and laid off, fired or quit your job, the Age 55 Rule allows you to take a distribution from your 401(k) without incurring an early distribution penalty. Remember, the funds must be in the employer plan at time of distribution. As always, please speak to your accountant before making any distribution decisions. AGE 62 AND COUNTING The earliest age to begin receiving social security, but at a reduced amount. Filing early might make sense for some, but it’s important to understand the limitations of filing before your normal retirement age. Did you know that more than 75% of preretirees underestimate their life expectancy? For married couples, there is a 50% chance one spouse will reach age 93.2 Coordinating spousal and retirement benefits can be one of the most important decisions you make when planning for retirement.
BORN BEFORE JANUARY 1ST, 1954? Anyone born on or before that date is eligible to file a “restricted claim for spousal or divorced benefits”. If married or divorced, you may restrict an application to only spousal benefits, while delaying receipt of your retirement benefits and collect an 8% per-year delayed retirement credit. Complicated? You bet. Restrictions apply. 65 MEDICARE ELIGIBILITY Medicare is mandatory and in order to collect Social Security benefits, retirees must acquire Medicare when eligible. Open enrollment starts 3 months before the month you reach age 65 and 3 months after. Medicare is means-tested, meaning the more income an individual or couple generates, the more your health care payments under Medicare will be. That’s why it’s important to carefully structure retirement income sources with a sensitivity toward Medicare premiums. Social Security claiming strategies, navigating the rules of Medicare, managing Required Minimum Distributions- so much to plan for and coordinate. There’s no cookie-cutter approach when transitioning into retirement. TALK OF THE TOWN
WELCOME TO
Rumson
ONCE A SUMMER GETAWAY FOR WEALTHY NEW YORKERS, THIS WATERSIDE TOWN HAS BLOSSOMED INTO A PEACEFUL, TIGHT-KNIT COMMUNITY. At just 7.2 square miles, Rumson is small in comparison to other Monmouth County boroughs—it’s nestled between neighboring beach towns Sea Bright and Fair Haven, and even shares a high school with the latter. But what it lacks in miles it makes up for elsewhere. Rumson has been ranked fourth on niche.com’s Best Places in Monmouth County to Raise a Family and 43rd on Bloomberg’s 2017 list of the top 100 Richest Places to Live in America. It’s a mere 45-minute commute via ferry to Wall Street and there’s shopping and beaches just minutes away, making this suburban enclave truly special.
DID YOU KNOW? Whether rain or shine, summer or winter, Rumson has six parks, a boat ramp and a community center for residents to enjoy. Victory Park is the borough’s flagship, with picnic tables, a gazebo, a playground, tennis courts, a basketball court, a bocce court, a sandy beach and views of the Navesink River. Another popular hotspot is private facility Rumson Country Club (pictured), where 450 member-families enjoy golf, tennis, croquet, trap, skeet shooting and boating.
HOME, SWEET HOME
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
RUMSONNJ.GOV
Like many of Kevin Smith’s films, 1997’s Chasing Amy, which stars Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams and Matt Damon, is based in Monmouth County. The scene where Ben’s and Joey’s characters have their first heartto-heart was filmed overlooking the water at Victory Park in Rumson.
DINING OUT
History is apparent at Jumping Point Park, the site of the first of several bridges that linked Rumson and neighboring beach town Sea Bright. It was originally constructed in 1870 as a pedestrian toll bridge. Eventually this was replaced with metal swing bridges spanning the Shrewsbury River.
Established in 1877, this club is one of the oldest active tennis clubs and the oldest lawn tennis and cricket club in the United States. It was founded for athletic purposes but eventually became a central place for social life in Rumson‚ and in 1991 joined the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the club has 36 courts and hundreds of members (both adults and children). The club pays homage to its exciting history with paraphernalia and photographs from its early days on display.
7,100 ■ WEBSITE:
Unsurprisingly, waterfront dining and fresh, delicious food abound in Rumson. Salt Creek Grille will hit the spot if you want steak or a burger…with a view. Barnacle Bill’s is a more casual favorite, where you’ll find a menu stocked with pub grub and seafood. For a special occasion, book a table for two at Rumson House, formerly known as Chef David Burke’s eatery Fromagerie, a revamped farm-to-table dining experience with a full-service bar. And no trip to the area is complete without a meal at Ristorante Giorgia, an exceptional Italian eatery with a homey vibe.

1907 ■ POPULATION:
Thinking about buying or selling a home here? The median home value in Rumson is $1,299,100, up 1.8 percent from last year, according to Zillow. Many homes here are 19th century estates along the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers.
TREDWELL FARMERS HOUSE This 18th century estate was a prominent part of Rumson and Monmouth County’s history due to its tie to early settlers. The original portion of the home was built in 1670, making it the oldest home in Rumson. In 1832 Seabury Tredwell, a rich businessman based in New York City, purchased the 850-acre estate on Ridge Road and subsequently summered there with his family. Unfortunately, the original Tredwell House was destroyed in a fire in June 2006.
FAMOUS FACES
Plenty of celebrities have called Rumson home aside from its most notable residents like Bruce Springsteen, who owned a waterfront home on the Navesink River. Some other big names include, from left to right, film writer and producer Kevin Smith, who grew up in Highlands but lived in Rumson in the early 2000s; Melrose Place actress Heather Locklear, who lived here while married to Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora; Charlie Puth, the “See You Again” singer-songwriter who graduated from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School in 2010; and news anchor Bret Baier, host of Fox News’ Special Report with Bret Baier who spent the first 10 years of his life in the borough.
The general consensus is that the name Rumson was derived from early settlers who bought the land from Native Americans in exchange for quantities of rum. But back in 1663, Native Americans called the land “navarumsunk,” which over time got shortened to Rumson.

HEALTH NEWS
A CUP OF BLUEBERRIES A DAY ...keeps heart disease away. According to a recent study, eating one cup of blueberries daily significantly reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. An added benefit: It improves good cholesterol levels too. —The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Another reason to ditch fast food Your teens know the drill: Too much fast food will make them fat. But now studies show that it could also raise the risk of allergies and asthma. The research focused on people who eat fast food, especially burgers. The findings? Those teens who partake at least three times a week are much more likely to suffer from hay fever, eczema and asthma. —Respirology
HIGH BP CLUE?
If you find yourself waking during the night to use the loo, it could be a sign of high blood pressure, according to recent research. Findings show that you are 56 percent more likely to have high blood pressure if you go two or more times a night compared with those who sleep through the night. Study authors explain that elevated blood pressure causes the kidneys to filter more blood and produce more urine. —Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles
FAT FOR BREAKFAST
Perhaps you shouldn’t skip the bacon. A recent study shows that eating fat first thing in the morning may help metabolize fat and carbs for the rest of the day. It’s still a good idea to avoid trans fats and not to exceed eating more than 30 percent of your —University of Alabama at Birmingham calories from fat, however.
BRAIN DANCE
Want to keep your mind sharp? Just dance. Research suggests that learning new dance moves is better than doing repetitive exercises (think your normal workout) in increasing neural connections in your brain. —Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience
VITAMIN KNOW-HOW
You may be relying on your multivitamin to fill in the gaps if you’re not eating right, and that’s fine. However, to glean the benefits of certain vitamins, they must come from food, not supplements. Research indicates that while vitamins A and K and the minerals copper, magnesium and zinc all are associated with longevity, that’s only true if they are derived from food sources. So eat up when it comes to fruits, vegetables and whole grains. —Annals of Internal Medicine
ORANGE YOU GLAD YOU EAT FRUIT? Guys, this one’s for you: A recent study shows that men in the top fifth of fruit consumers— especially purchasers of citrus fruits—have a small reduction in the risk of prostate cancer. —University of Oxford
GLUTE BOOST
You know that your gluteus maximus helps you maintain good posture and promotes balance, but did you know that doing a single-leg squat (when you place your rear foot on a bench) works the muscle 62 percent more than a traditional squat?

GRADE A CARE
MMC OFFERS EASIER ACCESS TO HEART FAILURE AND COPD TREATMENT. THIS PAST SUMMER, Monmouth Medical Center claimed a top-10 spot among all New Jersey hospitals in the U.S. News & World Report rankings for 2019-20. The report specifically recognizes MMC’s heart failure and COPD specialists for earning the top honors as “high performers.” Taking into account nursing staff, the number of patients with the specific conditions,
any need for readmission after a hospital stay and patient survival, the hospital was recognized in these areas compared to more than 4,600 healthcare facilities across the nation. A Middletown couple is hardly surprised by the rankings. “When you go to your doctor, you’re in and out,” says Dennis Bulmer, 68, who’s

part of the hospital’s Healthy Lives program. (See sidebar.) “But the specialists in this program, they spend time with you and guide you in the right direction. I even have their own personal cell phone numbers so I can call to ask questions—even on the weekends.” The personal attention is important to Dennis, as well as to Linda, his wife of almost 50 years. Dennis suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as well as heart failure, and Linda also has COPD. Both participate in Healthy Lives. “For five years or more, I’ve been meeting at least once a month with the specialists there,” he says. “It’s made a huge difference for me.” Linda began going two years ago. “Today, I go there for her, and she goes there for me,” he says with a smile. Like U.S. News, the Bulmers volunteer their own “top rankings” for MMC. “We give them five stars,” he says. “The staff encourages both of us and helps us stay out of the emergency room. They’ve been excellent.”
COPD CARE ON THE ROAD For some people with COPD, health can change in the blink of an eye. Serious symptoms and simple worry can lead them to repeat visits to the emergency room and to days in the hospital. “We found that many people with COPD had a very difficult time getting healthcare or getting care before symptoms got so bad,” says Sharon Holden,

R.N., assistant vice president of Cardiopulmonary, Critical Care and Emergency Services at MMC. “Travelling to appointments can also be difficult for some, so we created the Home COPD Program to complement our Healthy Lives Program and Cardiopulmonary rehab services.” Unlike programs that require patients to visit the medical center, MMC’s home program takes care on the road—house visits by respiratory therapists with daily monitoring by nurse practitioners and other specialists as needed. They also make regular phone calls to patients to check on key symptoms. And the innovative “telemedicine” system allows patients to report weight, blood pressure and oxygen levels via blue tooth monitoring, all without leaving home. “When our staff and monitoring
system identify areas of concern, we can schedule additional tests or visits to specialists quickly and easily for the patient,” Holden says. “All this helps them to stay on top of their symptoms—and avoid a trip to the hospital.” The Home COPD Program is an integral part of the Healthy Lives Program and has had great success reducing unnecessary hospital readmissions and keeping our patients home. Many patients seen in Healthy Lives and the Home COPD Programs are also referred to the comprehensive Joel Opatut Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program at MMC, which is the first in the county to earn national certification from AACVPR (American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation) for cardiac rehabilitation.
HEALTHY LIVES, HIGH-QUALITY LIVES If you need care for heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or other heart or lung conditions, a dedicated multidisciplinary team from Monmouth Medical Center’s Healthy Lives program wants you to know it has two important missions: to help you avoid the need for a stay in the hospital and to help you have a great quality of life at home. “Some patients can’t walk from chair to chair when they first meet with us, and many think they can’t get better,” says Sharon Holden, assistant vice president of Cardiopulmonary, Critical Care and Emergency Services at MMC. “Education is one of the best things we give to patients because it gives them their lives back.” Heart and lung conditions can cause weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath and other difficult symptoms, as well as anxiety, she says. Through Healthy Lives, patients and medical staff work together to identify symptoms early, plus the tools to help avoid and improve them. “We also let participants know what symptoms to report to us and what steps can get them under control,” Holden says. In between visits, patients also have team members’ cell phone numbers that they can use anytime, anywhere. “Our staff has gotten calls from people on vacation in Atlantic City, when they have a questions or concern,” she says. “One even called us from a cruise!” Besides travel, patients often resume other activities they enjoy after they have started the Healthy Lives program. One recently returned to regular rounds of golf, and another resumed playing in a band. “Our goal is to empower them to get healthier and stay healthier,” Holden says. “It’s very satisfying to see how their lives improve.” Healthy Lives offers: • Education and support for patients and caregivers • Help for patients to manage symptoms and risk factors (cholesterol, blood pressure and diet) • Reduced visits to the emergency room • Prevention of hospitalization • Increased patient activity level and quality of life • Access to clinical research trials • Access to social services, clinical nutrition, cardiopulmonary rehab and ancillary testing

COMMUNITY SHOWS ITS TRUE COLORS AT ANNUAL EVENT WHILE SUPPORTING AND RAISING FUNDS FOR CANCER CARE PROGRAMS. THE MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER community—including hundreds of volunteers, donors, family and friends—attended the 24th annual Power of Pink Luncheon in July, honoring Louis Zinterhofer, M.D. Dr. Zinterhofer served as Monmouth Medical Center’s chairman of pathology from 1989–2018 and this year was appointed to the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners by Gov. Phil Murphy. Hosted by the Leon Hess Cancer Center Council and held at a private residence in Rumson, the program continued the council’s mission to raise money to enhance the quality of care delivered to cancer patients at Monmouth Medical Center. Bobbi Brown,
renowned makeup artist and best-selling author, provided the keynote address. The Leon Hess Cancer Center Council unites The Women’s Council for the Leon Hess Cancer Center and the Women of Wilentz for the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center. Together, the volunteers have raised more than $6 million to benefit The Leon Hess Cancer Center at Monmouth Medical Center, the region’s only facility designated as an Academic Comprehensive Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. Proceeds from this year’s event will go toward the Deep Inhalation Breathing Hold equipment. This is a technique designed for
a specific radiation patient population, which will dramatically prevent radiation induced abnormalities of blood flow to the heart, allowing MMC to remain a leader in breast treatment in our region. “Each year Power of Pink provides an opportunity to celebrate the important work of the Leon Hess Cancer Center and to take pride in the outstanding care that is provided every day,” says Eric Carney, Monmouth Medical Center’s president and chief executive officer. “The hard work and commitment of the Leon Hess Cancer Center Council have made such an impact on the lives of so many patients who need access to high quality cancer care close to home.”

THEM WELL
MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER PROGRAMS PROMOTE WELL-BEING FOR STUDENTS.
AS ITS WIDE SCOPE OF PEDIATRIC services clearly reflects, The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) offers care for children and families with a breadth and depth unrivaled throughout the region. Additionally, MMC is committed to improving the well-being of Monmouth County children beyond the hospital walls, aiming to not only serve patients who need medical treatment but also to help area students thrive in their communities by investing in initiatives that promote a healthy lifestyle. Most recently, The Unterberg Children’s Hospital demonstrated this commitment by sponsoring a free, 90-minute soccer clinic for more than 60 members of Long Branch Middle School girls’ and boys’ teams through the RWJBarnabas Health sponsorship of the SkyBlue women’s professional soccer team. The women’s professional soccer team Sky Blue FC, which plays in Piscataway, ran the clinic, which featured scrimmages and interactions with players. Afterward, there was a 15-minute question-and-answer and autograph session with Sky Blue players. “Monmouth Medical Center has a long history of meeting the needs of its neighbors both through high-quality health services and community outreach such as this,” says Eric Carney, MMC president and chief executive officer. “We see ourselves as a partner in the care of our community.”

WINTER TRAINING Jason Krystofiak, M.D., a sports medicine physician at MMC, is the team physician and medical director for Sky Blue. He shares the following strategies for exercising safely when there’s a chill in the air. • Wear wool or fleece Jason Krystofiak, M.D. mittens and a hat. This will help protect your extremities from frostbite, in which the skin and other tissues freeze. • Watch for signs of frostbite, such as numbness, tingling and a lack of color, on your nose, ears, hands and toes. If you have any of these symptoms, head inside and slowly warm your skin. Frostbite can occur in just 30 minutes when the temperature is 0 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind speed is 15 mph (wind chill of -19 degrees F). • Wear sunscreen (with an SPF of at least 30) and sunglasses. Ice and snow can cause a reflection of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. • Drink plenty of water because it’s possible to become dehydrated in the winter. • Dress in layers. The first layer should be a synthetic fabric, which wicks away sweat. The next should be a warm fleece or wool layer. The top layer, which can be removed, should be waterproof and breathable.

TIME FOR A SCREENING MAMMOGRAM?
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so the experts at the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center want to offer you some reminders:
Cynthia Barone, D.O., regional director of breast imaging for Monmouth Medical Center, and Diane Ciricillo, director of the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center
SMARTER BREAST CARE
NEW TECHNOLOGY AT THE COLTS NECK JACQUELINE WILENTZ BREAST CENTER ALSO PROVIDES MORE COMFORTABLE EXAMS. IN MONMOUTH COUNTY, screening mammograms just got easier—and better. Breast imagers at Monmouth Medical Center’s Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center at Colts Neck offer new technology to provide some of the best mammographic images available today. Women find the new mammographic machine, called the Genius 3D Mammography with SmartCurve technology, to be especially effective and more comfortable—thanks to the rounded design of the compression device—when compared with traditional mammography. “We offer a curved paddle that most women find more comfortable, because it is designed to fit the natural contour of the breast so mammograms are better tolerated,” says Diane Ciricillo, director of the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Centers, who adds
that the state-of-the-art advanced design reduces pinching and allows uniform compression over the entire breast. Research shows that more than 9 out of 10 women who felt discomfort with the standard “flat” surface paddle used with other mammogram equipment find SmartCurve more comfortable. Studies also show that the 3D tomosynthesis is more accurate than 2D mammography alone. The 3D mammography system allows radiologists to examine breast tissue layer by layer, like unstacking a deck of cards. This allows for better detection of breast cancer by eliminating overlapping breast tissue. Studies also show that 3D mammography lowers a woman’s chance of being called back for follow-up testing such as additional mammographic images or breast ultrasound, which can help reduce stress and anxiety.
• Screening mammography for average-risk women should begin at age 40. • 75 percent of women with breast cancer have no family history. • Tomosynthesis (3D mammography) detects 41 percent more invasive breast cancers and reduces callbacks by up to 40 percent. • At the Wilentz Center, we utilize software to create a 2D image from your 3D imaging without any additional radiation. • The Wilentz center is proud to continually be recognized as having some of the highest quality measures for breast centers. • When breast cancer is detected early through yearly screening, the five-year survival rate is almost 100 percent. ■ SCHEDULE YOUR SCREENING MAMMOGRAM TODAY: 732.923.7700 Jacqueline M. The same dark brown hardwood flooring is used throughout the apartment, with area rugs by Masland Carpets to warm up and ground each space. Opposite: The designer and her team installed “coffered ceilings in the living and dining room that created architectural features of thick crown moldings and base moldings.”
SOMETIMES, WHEN IT COMES to interior design, you need to plan for the future. Such was the case for an empty-nester couple who purchased an outdated condominium in Red Bank hoping they’d retire there after a complete renovation. It was a two-bedroom, two-bathroom corner unit on the seventh floor with waterfront views and tons of potential. So the out-oftowners, who have New Jersey roots, found Sheila Rich of Monmouth Beach-based Sheila Rich Interiors online and hired her to bring their vision to life. “They sent me pictures of what they liked, and I wanted something timeless,” Rich says of the semilong-distance project. “The touches of orange are easy to change if in ten years they don’t want orange, but all the other colors are standard and neutral. It’s a good palette to jump off from.” With the color scheme set, Rich and her team got to work, first opening up the walls to get more mileage out of the waterfront views and make the kitchen the center of the living space. But what ensued were myriad structural issues that made things begin to resemble an episode of Property Brothers. “We discovered a gas pipe going through the wall over the stove,” Rich says. “We needed the gas line and also wanted the wall open, so we took the gas line and elbowed it to the right, put it up that small wall, built a soffit above the island (which also became a great place for lighting) and then elbowed it back into the apartment above them.” Cement ceilings throughout the apartment
made light installation difficult too, so Rich and company built coffered ceilings in just about every room and added recessed lighting. Crisis averted. Another clever trick was adding in four built-in pantries in the large corridor for storage, painted a darker charcoal gray to visually separate the entry hallway from the living space. A “symmetrical” small dining area with a Hubbardton Forge ribbon chandelier and a homey living room round out the main area. “Most people would have had the sofa under the window, but we did the sofa facing the view,” the designer says. “The custom console has a hydraulic lift, so the TV can go back in its place when not in use and the view is unobstructed.” Rich also overhauled the master bedroom and bathroom as well as the guest room and guest bathroom, using the same cohesive theme as the rest of the home and cleverly maximizing space. For example, says Rich, “In the master they have two decent closets but there was no room to put a dresser, so I put in two bedside chests from Vanguard Furniture, each with three drawers that, with the closets, gave them enough storage.” Crisis averted again. During the reno, the six-hours-away homeowners would pay a visit to the Jersey Shore every five to six weeks to meet with Rich and make sure things were on track. They were thrilled with the end result. “Once we worked together and they had confidence that I was reading them,” says Rich, “it just worked.”

SEE A CHAMPION CROWNED FOR YOUR NEXT VACATION, TURN OFF THE TV, PACK YOUR BAGS AND PREPARE TO WITNESS SPORTS HISTORY—LIVE. By GIANNA BARONE The winning of a championship in sports is an event of peak excitement and emotion— whether or not your rooting is victorious. And while your usual perch for observing such moments may be the living room sofa in front of your television, think how much more exciting it would be if you’re actually there. We won’t lie—tickets for an up-closeand-personal view of the most thrilling finales in sports can be pricey. But wouldn’t a trip built around such a spectator high—with all its flags, fouls and “Fore!”s—be something to remember for a lifetime? Here are five ideas:

OCTOBER 2019 | MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM
SUPER BOWL LIV
Miami, Florida; February 2020 Skip the gimmicky commercials and pack your bathing suit, because next year’s Super Bowl will take place at Hard Rock Stadium in sunny Miami. Spectators who are looking to unwind before grabbing their seats at the big game can book a stay at the award-winning Acqualina Beachfront Resort, complete with easy access to seaside spa treatments, yacht rentals and scuba-diving lessons. Or, for a truly immersive Super Bowl experience, reserve a room at the Stadium Hotel, just a five-minute drive from the action, where you’ll be sure to rub elbows with fellow fans. While in town for the game, check out the “Gridiron Glory” Hall of Fame exhibit to see more than 200 artifacts from NFL history. When you’re not tailgating on brats and beers, take advantage of Miami’s rich Latin culture with some authentic Cuban grub from Cuban Guys, or try the shrimp-jeweled paella from Estefan Kitchen (yes, it’s owned by Gloria and Emilio Estefan) on a night when you feel a little fancier. Game-day tickets and upgrade packages can be purchased at tickets.nflonlocation.com.
THE MASTERS GOLF TOURNAMENT
Augusta, Georgia; April 2020 Rub elbows with the greatest golfers in the country when you book a trip down to the annual Masters Tournament. Explore the historic Augusta National Golf Club, where legendary players have congregated for 85 years for the championship tournament. Book a stay at the city’s star hotel, The Partridge Inn, where Southern eclectic meets upscale luxury. The hotel even offers a package for Masters Week, including tickets for the entire five-day championship tournament, premium bar and food service and shuttles to and from Augusta National. While you’re in town, check out the Rock Fore! Dough charity concert sponsored by the Masters, where notable artists like Lady Antebellum and Cheap Trick have headlined in past years. For some golfing of your own, putt at the nearby greens at the Forest Hills Golf Club. A real hole-in-one meal beckons with the fresh Georgia seafood at Beamie’s at the River, where you’ll dine on local oysters and crawfish right next to the scenic Savannah. Tickets for the Masters Tournament can be obtained by submitting an application for daily match attendance at tickets.masters.com.
A SPORT WHERE PATIENCE PAYS OFF— EVENTUALLY
DAYTONA 500
Daytona Beach, Florida; February 2020 No need to wait for a waving checkered flag to book a trip down to Daytona Beach for the 62nd annual Daytona 500. Surround yourself with autographed memorabilia from champions past when you stay at The Daytona, a boutique Marriott resort that has been specially designed to celebrate the car culture of the nation’s biggest auto racing event. Prepare for race day on Feb. 16 with programs like the NASCAR “Rookie Experience,” in which you can take the wheel of an actual stock car on the Daytona International Speedway. For even more auto-obsessed visitors, the Motorsports Hall of Fame is a must-see, with cars and cycles from its 250 inducted drivers on display as well as vintage gas tanks and helmets. After the final stretch, head over to Stonewood Grill and Tavern, Daytona’s local chophouse and sports bar, for a buttery filet mignon and pale ale to wash it down. Tickets for the weekend and events are available at daytonainternational speedway.com.
KENTUCKY DERBY
Louisville, Kentucky; May 2020 Springtime, derby hats and mint juleps can only mean one thing: The Kentucky Derby is coming around again! Attend the 145th running of this famous horse race, and it just might be the social event of a lifetime. Book your stay at the Omni Louisville Hotel, just 15 minutes from the big race at the Churchill Downs racetrack—it features everything from an underground bowling alley/speakeasy to Mokara Spa, where facial treatments can ensure you have a natural glow in that Kentucky sunshine. Before the race, be sure to find a fascinator that shows off your unique style from Hat Girls in downtown Louisville. For a night out, secure your spot at the Fillies and Lilies Party, the annual exclusive gala that kicks off Saturday’s race where high society and celebrities alike enjoy five-star cuisine and live music from such acts as Martina McBride and LeAnn Rimes. During your stay, check out local hangouts like Griff’s, a tap house that serves up fried pickles, catfish and a mean “hot brown”—an open-faced turkey sandwich smothered in melted cheese and brown gravy. Tickets for derby events can be purchased at kentuckyderby.com/2020.
U.S. OPEN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Queens, New York; August–September 2020 The latest of these events is the one right nearby: tennis’ annual U.S. Open, held at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens. In between matches, take advantage of the programs the United States Tennis Association offers on the outskirts of the courts, such as the Kids’ Zone play area and free live concerts. Stop by the “Fan Week Center Stage,” where racquet-wielding champs like Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams may pop in for surprise appearances and autographs. Stay close to the action when you retire at The One Boutique Hotel in Flushing, where the high-end rooftop bar and neighboring spa facilities will give you all the right big-city vibes. If you’ve worked up an appetite from all of that volleying, have no fear; Queens is the Empire State’s most culturally diverse borough, and its food scene lives up to that label. Check out the cuisine in Flushing’s own Chinatown, with trendy treats such as steamed pork dumplings from Dumpling Galaxy and refreshing bubble tea from CoCo Fresh Tea. Tickets and “experience” packages are available at usopen.org.
As Monmouth Health & Life went to press, host cities for this fall’s baseball World Series weren’t known. The Cubs, who won baseball’s crown in 2016, have been eliminated but they’re already thinking next year—and you should too. The Chicago Cubs’ (mlb.com/cubs) Wrigley Field anchors a charming neighborhood called Wrigleyville, which well rewards an autumn visit. Dine with a view of Wrigley at Dutch and Doc’s, or venture a few blocks south to Belmont Avenue and browse in the quirky Gallery Bookstore, taste the famed cinnamon rolls at Ann Sather Restaurant or catch an improv act at The Annoyance Theatre & Bar. And if the Cubbies don’t make the fall classic next year, be patient and eat healthy—the team’s last wait to get into the Series was 71 years long.

POWER FOOD
Make Tonight Date Night FIND TIME TO ENJOY THIS SWEET, NUTRITIOUS DRIED FRUIT THAT’S AT ITS PEAK NOW. Dates are the sweet, chewy, edible fruit of a flowering plant species known as the date palm and we Americans usually encounter them in their dried form, similar to raisins. They have a rich history—dates have been a staple in Middle Eastern diets since pretty much the beginning of human civilization (they’re mentioned 50 times in the Bible), and they’ve never gone out of style. POWER UP
Like other dried fruits, dates are high-calorie, which makes them the perfect snack for anyone trying to gain weight. But they’re also a healthy one—in moderation—for those of us who aren’t. Rest assured, those calories are far from empty. One 3½-ounce serving of dates contains 7 grams of fiber and 2 grams of protein, as well as 20 percent of the recommended daily intake (RDI) of potassium, 18 percent of that of copper and 12 percent of the RDI of vitamin B6—that’s the B vitamin that boosts the metabolism and helps create new red blood cells and neurotransmitters. Dates are also loaded with antioxidants such as flavonoids, carotenoids and phenolic acid (known for reducing inflammation, promoting heart and eye health and lowering cancer risk, respectively). Research suggests that dates may be as good for the brain as they are for the rest of the body. Mice fed daterich food were found to have better memory, heightened learning abilities and less anxiety than the control group in a study published in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine. That has led Alzheimer’s disease researchers to believe that dates may be an effective food for reducing the odds of the condition or delaying its development. Dates are also thought to promote natural labor if eaten during the last few weeks of pregnancy. BUY/STORE/SERVE
Peak date season in the United States is between September and March. When you’re choosing your bunch at the grocery store, look for dates that are wrinkled but not hard, and have a touch of whiteness but no crystalized sugar on their skin. When it comes to incorporating these treats into your meals, the possibilities are endless. Of course, dates can serve as a snack by themselves, or either pitted and stuffed with nuts or cream cheese. Alternatively, sprinkle chopped and pitted dates into your oatmeal, salad or smoothie for a hint of sweetness. Or, for a healthy dessert your kids will love, try making “date balls”—mash such ingredients as
56

peanut butter, chocolate chips and oats together with diced dates and dust the finished products with powdered sugar. Fortunately, dates are lowmaintenance, so storing them won’t be a problem unless you don’t plan to eat them for more than 30 days, in which case you should refrigerate them in a sealed container. —Carly Cannavina

RESTAURANT REVIEW
TOMMY’S TAVERN + TAP
I STILL REMEMBER MY FIRST trip to the local sports bar, a jaunt with friends some 20 or so years ago to watch my beloved Jets. There was little to think about other than the game; people stood elbow to elbow at the bar, drinks were limited to mostly domestic beers, and if you were lucky to score a high-top, you had a limited selection of pub grub—wings, nachos, burgers and fries. I still root for the same football team, but much has changed in the world of bars—just take a look at Tommy’s Tavern + Tap in Freehold. Many give Tommy’s, which also has locations in Sea Bright and Staten Island, a sports bar label because of the numerous flat screens mounted throughout the establishment. But make no mistake, this is an upscale tavern—the sheer number of tables, large booths and expansive outdoor patio say so. Tommy’s recently took over a former Applebee’s, maintaining the national chain’s family-focused environment but bringing an elevated bar menu that falls in line with the desires of today’s diners: fresh takes on the classics and Instagram-worthy presentation. ’Tis the season, so my friend and I started with autumn-themed drinks—an Octoberfest beer for me and spiked cider for her. The sips were perfect as we perused and debated the lengthy list of starters. A specialty pizza or a flatbread (there are nearly two dozen options) could’ve served as an app, but we opted for traditional plates. We passed on crispy Brussels sprouts and crab cakes and began with fried calamari, a typical offering at any bar or restaurant. Tommy’s version came with zesty marinara and garlic aioli dips, both of which were needed to save the unfortunately over-oiled (read: soggy) breaded squid. A one-time misfire, I hoped. My friend ordered our second app, sushi nachos, off the separate Japanese-themed menu. (It also features seaweed salad, edamame and shrimp tempura, among other starters.) We were taken aback by the size of the bowl and more overwhelmed by the amount of food piled in it. Fresh spicy tuna and avocado overflowed, and unlike the typical bar nachos that lose crispiness under the moisture of cheese and tomatoes, Tommy’s sushi nachos maintain their chip integrity until the last bite—and believe me, you’ll want to eat it until the very end. Word to the wise: One bowl will easily stuff two people, so be sure you have a larger party in tow if you’re ordering this app. Already full, I pledged to trudge forward, as I was really looking forward to my main—Tommy’s tavern dip. Spins on classics like pulled pork mac and cheese and mango shrimp tacos piqued my interest, but I was drawn to the meaty sandwich. One taste of the sliced prime rib, which was topped with mozzarella and a light horseradish sauce, made me forget that my belly was filled to the brim. For an extra blast of juicy deliciousness, I dipped the sandwich in the accompanying au jus sauce—though frankly I was more than happy without it. I was under the impression that my friend would order sushi (yes, this tavern has a complete list of specialty rolls as well as poke bowls), but she went with a Shore staple—a lobster roll. She reported that the abundance of Maine lobster wasn’t overpowered by the mayo that topped it. In fact, as she dissected the sandwich (she eventually pulled the meat from between the brioche bread) it became clear that only a touch of mayo had been used. She graded it not as the best lobster roll she’s ever had, but one that’s definitely worth ordering again. Assorted ice cream, cakes and cannoli are featured on the dessert menu, but there was certainly no room in the inn for sweets let alone anything else. I’ll plan better for our next visit, whether it’s dinner for two or an outing with friends to watch the next big game. —Darius Amos Tommy’s Tavern + Tap, 3492 Rte. 9, Freehold, 732.543.0053, tommystavernandtap.com
