82 Where to Eat 86 Be There
to the latest edition of Fiscal Fitness! It’s another hot day at the Jersey Shore as we head into the dog days of summer. Let’s congratulate and cool off by supporting the Reader’s Choice “best of” winners highlighted in this issue! As the year-end is quickly approaching, now is the time to consider making smart adjustments to your retirement and financial plans before it’s too late. It’s also a great time to plan for year-end tax-saving strategies.
Are you taking advantage of catch-up contributions if you’re age fifty or older?
They are designed to help you make up any retirement savings shortfall by bumping up the amount you can save in an IRA, Roth IRA1 or employer- plan. Check your employerplan rules-not all plans allow catch-up contributions but if they do, this year you can contribute up to $23,500 of your pay plus an additional $7,000 if you’re age 50 or older. Remember, you can split your contribution any way you wish, such as pre-tax and posttax contributions. This must be done by year-end.
TO A ROTH 401(K) if your employer plan offers it. This is a great option for high-income earners because the Roth IRA income limitations do not apply to Roth 401(k) contributions ($146,000 or less to make a full contribution for single filers). More good news: Beginning this year, required minimum distributions (RMDs) are no longer required from Roth 401(k)s, allowing your money to potentially grow taxdeferred for years. Note: Some 403(b) and 457 (b) plans also allow Roth contributions so check with your plan administrator.
Because your Roth 401(k) contributions are
made on an after-tax basis, they’re always free of federal income tax when distributed from the plan. But the investment earnings on your Roth contributions are tax- free only if you meet the requirements for a “qualified distribution.”2 You can generally avoid taxation by rolling your distribution over to a Roth IRA or to another employer’s Roth 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b) plan, if that plan accepts Roth rollovers. Consult a qualified tax advisor before making any decisions.
when Inheriting IRAs and retirement plans. The rules governing how IRA and retirement plan assets are distributed to beneficiaries are complicated and could result in big tax bills and possible penalties for many beneficiaries.3 If a beneficiary is an entity such as a trust, charity, or estate, other rules apply and should be reviewed. Seek the advice of an estate-planning attorney before making any decisions.

Maybe it’s been a decade or two since you went shopping for a protractor—and one of those three-ring notebook binders whose rings snap shut with a satisfying clack. But who ever said “back to school” time was only about school? September is a perfect chance to embrace recommitments of many kinds, even if your only curriculum is life itself. And it’s in that spirit that we present this issue of MONMOUTH.
Embrace, for example, local excellence. Starting on page 35 you’ll find our annual “Readers’ Choice” section, a listing of businesses voted by more than 5,000 of you, the readers, as Monmouth County’s most outstanding in their categories, from donut shops to dog groomers, from wellness centers to fashion boutiques to bicycle-repair places. No doubt you’ll find old favorites there. Also, keeping our motif of the fresh restart, here’s your chance to explore establishments you haven’t visited yet. (If we’ve left out a deserving place you think should be included, drop me a line about it at rita.guarna@wainscotmedia.com—maybe it’ll be a winner next year.)
Back-to-schoolers and the older folks who shop with them will enjoy our feature on back-to-school fashions, beginning on page 28. And our health article on page 20 offers timely tips for parents on ensuring their kids have clear vision—in the classroom, for instance.
Speaking of starting over again, remember that old saying about “If at first you don’t succeed….”? Alicia Wong of Manalapan surely did. She and now-husband Bryan scheduled an ambitious wedding ceremony and party back in 2020—then came the pandemic. Their nuptials had to be small and private that year, but their pent-up hopes for a grand occasion didn’t go away. Happily, they found expression for them in an unforgettable first-birthday party for their son Carter, which they termed, naturally enough, Carter’s Carnival. Read about the fun on page 22.
There’s much more in this issue—and relax, despite our “back to school” theme there won’t be a test. The Buzz section, starting on page 8, teaches all about outdoor markets, escape rooms, thrift shops, a golden retriever who favors a beloved stuffed sloth—and more. You’ll find refreshing warm-weather salads on page 50, and read on page 48 of beaches worthy of a late-summer getaway. Learn about a Farmingdale restaurant where phenomenal pizza is only the beginning (page 85) and meet a leader in the effort to bring back Asbury Park’s legendary Turf Club (page 10), a venue rich in African American music history.
When summer bids its bittersweet goodbye, we all go back to something. Let’s savor this moment of transition.
Enjoy!

Like it or not, your home’s exterior is a mirror of you. It can reflect your taste and style. It can add to or detract from your home’s value. In order to understand the many ways our homes can reflect our personalities and interests, we spoke with Antonio Aiello, Principal at New Jersey based Devin Aiello Architects, to learn more about this year’s top exterior trends.
Incorporate Architectural Elements into Your Home’s Exterior
Siding is one of the most effective ways to transform the exterior of your home. “Siding has a more timeless appeal than some of the other options on the market,” says Aiello.
Be sure to consider design features like gingerbread shake, board and batten, and detailed trim. Fiber cement board siding, like James Hardie, is low maintenance and keeps its look long-term. It is one of the trending siding options currently on the market.
“Fiber cement board siding creates the feel and appeal of a wood siding with the longevity of vinyl or aluminum siding,” explains Aiello. Additionally, it’s a composite material that resists rot, mold, and damage.
Embrace Muted Base Tones and Add Interest with a Pop
When deciding which color you’ll use for your home overall, consider more muted colors, Aiello suggests. “Muted colors will fade less and they’ll maintain with the times—they won’t date as quickly as more vibrant colors.”
Look for a complementary color that makes an impact as an exterior accent color. “When choosing a color to add a splash of energy, I like to use bold, primary colors—a bright yellow or red, something that stands out and pulls your attention.”
Whether you create a different finish on different floors or use an accent point like a bay window or an addition, using a different kind of textured siding can create visual interest and align with design trends.
Black and other dark colors can make a beautiful statement and are on trend in recent years. According to Aiello, if you’re building a new home from the ground up, black works well because you can insulate and seal it properly. “If you’re refinishing your exterior, look into the existing insulation if you are considering darker colors to ensure it is sufficient to control heat in the summer without making your air conditioner work overtime,” Aiello shares.
Environmental sustainability is an important consideration in every purchase we make, big or small. Home exterior product manufacturers are innovating their products to be longer lasting and more eco-friendly. Finding a system that can stand the test of time helps the environment and saves you money in the long run. Look for materials that have longevity and are easy to maintain.
Patrycja’s core focus is to elevate the home exterior industry to a style-guided experience where our advisors work with you to co-imagine your dream exterior. She inspires our design team to discover and incorporate the latest style trends while honoring timeless remodeling approaches. She is the voice of the customer, drawing on our core values of transparency, integrity, and lasting quality.
Over the last 30 years, we have transformed over 6,000 homes with siding, roofing, windows, and doors and have earned hundreds of 5-star reviews. We offer $0 down financing and industryleading lifetime material and labor warranties.

Pollinators are an essential part of our ecosystem, and it’s important that we take care of them. That’s easy to remember in spring and high summer when colorful flowers are in full bloom and beautiful butterflies grab your attention. But how can we keep our bees and other pollinators healthy in the late summer and early fall? Here are three suggestions:
• Bee creative. You already keep your garden and containers blooming well into October, so why not add some pollinator-friendly annuals to the mix? Bright-blooming chrysanthemums are a haven for bees and moths. For even more fall color, zinnias are another great choice. If you’re thinking about your garden for next year, consider perennials that bloom later son—beekeeping experts black-eyed Susans.
• Bee a little lazy. We know is to clear leaves as soon but don’t act so fast! According nonprofit Environment America,
some leaf cover on the ground can provide shelter for bumblebees and other pollinators as temperatures cool.
• Bee green. Environment America also notes that certain pesticides, such as neonicotinoids and sulfoxaflor, are particularly harmful and toxic to bees and have been blamed for their largescale decline. Choose safer pesticides.

Name: Kona, 3-year-old English cream golden retriever Owners: Bobby and Kelsey Byrne of Middletown
This pup is a social butterfly! She’s involved in Asbury Park’s Good Boy Training classes and social club, and she’s a regular visitor at Hotel for Dogs in Port Monmouth. She and her humans can be found adventuring all over Monmouth—to the Asbury Park Dog Beach, Bell Works and the Henry Hudson Trail in the Atlantic Highlands, for instance. If there’s a park in Monmouth, this gal wants to visit it. Kona loves being off-leash on the beach and is always looking for places where it’s permitted. She loves children, other dogs and her little “brother,” Banx (also a golden), whom she wrestles and plays chase with in the backyard for hours. Bobby describes the pair as “inseparable.” Kona also loves bully sticks, watermelon and her stuffed sloth. Says Bobby: “She got the sloth her first Christmas as a puppy, and she still naps and cuddles with it. We’ve had to purchase four others over the years to keep up with the wear and tear.”

Name: Mr. Bingley, tuxedo domestic shorthair
Owner: Aaron Irizarry of Atlantic Highlands
After meeting Mr. Bingley, his brother Aleister and their foster family during the pandemic, Irizarry fell in love with the feline duo and adopted them. Both have settled into their forever home, but Mr. Bingley has become the “distinguished gentleman,” his owner says. The kitty loves to be around people, particularly when they’re sleeping—though he has a habit of sitting on their chests and kneading until they wake up. He is also an attentive sentry and often can be found sitting on top of the banister, observing the whole house and scanning for anything he deems suspicious (a wayward speck of dust or a wandering house spider, perhaps). If you can’t find him there, check by his water bowl. Irizarry says he might be pawing at it, splashing the water everywhere and making a mess.

“Green” building consultant and tireless volunteer Jen Souder leads the effort to restore a historic Asbury Park club.
The Stone Pony isn’t the only iconic music venue in Asbury Park. The Turf Club is returning to its rightful place on the musical map, thanks to the Asbury Park African-American Music Project and Jen Souder, 51, its board president and founding member, as well as the community she’s quick to credit.
Still a legend in the minds of many, the Turf Club opened on Springwood Avenue in 1955 and became the African American hub of jazz, blues and R&B. Memories of those days, which Souder and others are gathering as oral histories, provide inspiration to restore the club. MONMOUTH caught up with Souder to ask about the project.
Why is the Turf Club special?
It’s the last standing music venue on Asbury Park’s Springwood Avenue, and Springwood Avenue is the heart of the city’s historic African American community.
Tell us about the area’s glory days. Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and other jazz greats passed through Springwood Avenue. A little bit later, George Benson and Clarence Clemons played there. Clemons went on to play with Bruce Springsteen. What led to the area’s decline?
Because of a lot of change over time—civil unrest, disinvestment—the physical fabric of that neighborhood has changed a lot. There’s very little left physically where we can go to remember that history. I understand there’s a team working to gather Springwood oral histories. What sense of magic arises from these stories?
The feeling was that you walked down the street and you would just hear music on every corner because the doors of these clubs would be open. How did it go from histories to “Let’s save this place”?
The primary catalyst was City Councilwoman Yvonne Clayton. She and I went to the National Trust for Historic Preservation conference in San Francisco and talked about this history. As we
were showing slides of Springwood Avenue, we mentioned that the Turf Club was there. And people in the room said, “Well, what are you doing to preserve it if it’s the last one?”
And you raised $125,000 to buy the club? We didn’t have a lot of money at the time. The owner was very, very patient and generous in the sense that he did eventually sell it to us.
I understand the club now has a roof. What’s next?
The whole project is about $2.5 million, to open the doors and have an operating budget and all those things. We’ve raised about $500,000. We’re in the phase of completing the exterior restoration. We’d love to be able to say that in 2026 we’ll complete the work. But we don’t have the money yet so I can’t say it confidently.
I hear Springsteen donated $100,000. We did get a very generous donation from Springsteen
last fall. He reached out to us. He had done a photo shoot with music photographer Danny Clinch in the Turf Club in 2023. Springsteen’s name got us more visibility, which helps to reach many more people—a very big deal for us.
How does this tie in with your work at the Rutgers Center for Urban Policy Research and as a green building consultant at Greener by Design?
My professional career has been focused on integrating cultural heritages and sustainability into the built environment. [And at the Turf Club] I work with our architect and contractor to help manage the design and construction.
You grew up in Kinnelon in Morris County. What drew you to Asbury Park in 2009?
It was a very diverse community with a lot of music and culture and, of course, the ocean. If you want to be involved in the community, it’s a great place to do so. When not working on projects like this, how do you spend your time? You mentioned you’re married with two school-aged children, Morgan and Malcolm.
We do fun things around Asbury Park. Being part of the community, they also get dragged around to all sorts of activities and meetings. [Souder serves on the library and planning boards.] I’m actually very happy they’ve had the opportunity.
Can folks experience the Turf Club before opening day?
Even with no roof and no power there’ve been magical evenings—each Tuesday in summer we would have music in the evening, and we’re doing that again this summer, although it isn’t physically at the club because it’s in construction.
How can the community lend its support?
We’re always looking for donations to help us with the next phase, so you can go to our website: asburyamp.org. We always need volunteers, and we also love people to share their stories.

IF THE BLACKBOARD IS A BLUR THIS FALL, TROUBLE LIES AHEAD. BUT REGULAR CHECKS WITH AN EYE-CARE PROFESSIONAL CAN HELP.
One in four U.S. children ages 2 to 17 wears corrective lenses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And other kids ought to be wearing them but aren’t—yet. Vision problems at an early age can adversely affect how a child learns in the classroom and interacts with other students, and they’re also a safety concern.
As schools reopen this fall, eye specialists like ophthalmologists and optometrists, such as Monmouth Eye Care in Tinton Falls and Precision Eyecare in Red Bank, can guide parents as kids prepare to head back to class in September:
• Recognize symptoms. Let’s face it—some kids, especially the youngest ones, may not communicate that they’re having trouble seeing, either at home or in the classroom. They may be embarrassed to say they can’t see properly, or they may not even realize that their vision isn’t clear. Vision problems in children aren’t always obvious so it’s important for parents, teachers, brothers and sisters to closely observe kids as they’re growing. Parents should be on the lookout for symptoms such as squinting or holding reading materials very close to the face. They can be subtle indicators of impaired vision, but they’re frequently missed signs. Blurred vision can also be accompanied by frequent headaches, a short attention span and coordination difficulties.
• Get kids tested. Just as you’d take your child to a pediatrician for a back-to-school checkup, take her or him for a routine eye exam with an ophthalmologist or an optometrist. Many parents believe that school screenings are the same as comprehensive eye exams, but even with 20/20 vision, your child may still have problems that can only be detected by an experienced eye doctor. The American Optometric Association recommends that kids receive their first eye exam between 6 and 12 months, followed by another exam at 3 years, then exams every other year while they are in school. Kids with impaired vision often have one of three conditions: myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) or astigmatism (partial blurred vision caused by
imperfect curvature of the eye). Other common eye problems are amblyopia, or lazy eye, and strabismus, when the eyes are not properly aligned. Eye doctors can recommend treatment or correction for each of the conditions.
• Choose correct correction. In most cases, children with impaired vision will be fitted for glasses. (Parents can have fun with kids by letting them pick out their frames!) For older kids, especially those who play sports, contact lenses are another correction option. Children as young as 8 years old can do well with contacts, but it’s really up to the parents and the patient, as daily placement of the contacts on the eye—which includes keeping lenses and hands clean—and regular maintenance require a high level of responsibility. That said, most eye care providers won’t recommend contacts for children younger than age 12, as the risks often outweigh the benefits in younger children. Meanwhile, your child’s celebrity idol may tout the benefits of corrective eye surgery, but procedures such as lasik are not FDAapproved for patients under 18. Because the cornea can still be in a developing stage even in a patient’s late teens, most eye-care professionals won’t recommend surgery until a person reaches 21.
• Be wise with kids’ eyes. Eye care goes beyond correcting impaired vision, and it’s up to a parent or guardian to ensure that kids are maintaining proper health to keep sharp. Children should take regular breaks to prevent digital eyestrain. Keep in mind the 20-20-20 rule, which suggests that an individual look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This practice can help reduce eye fatigue and keep eyes healthy. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet lights has been linked to ocular disease later in life, so most experts recommend that children wear sunglasses as part of their regular outdoor protection routine. Protective eyewear also is recommended when kids play contact sports or sports involving potentially sharp equipment. Parents should also limit a child’s exposure to household chemicals, detergents and cleaners, many of which can irritate eyes.
If you’re looking for a diet that is good for ocular health, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends emphasis on:
• Orange-colored vegetables for vitamin A: carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, apricots
• Fruits and vegetables for vitamin C: oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, lemons, peaches, red bell peppers, tomatoes, strawberries
• Leafy greens: spinach, kale, romaine lettuce
• Foods rich in vitamin E: avocados, almonds, sunflower seeds
• Fish with omega-3 fatty acids: salmon, tuna, sardines, trout
There are several types of eye doctors and specialists who can help you with your vision. Before you go, it’s important to know the differences between each expert. Here’s a quick guide:
This specialist is a medical doctor (M.D.) or a doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) with advanced eye-care training who offers complete eye care, from exams to diagnoses of diseases. In addition, an ophthalmologist is licensed to practice medicine and surgery and can perform surgical care for issues such as cataracts, trauma, childhood eye conditions and glaucoma. When to see one: general eye care, management of eye diseases and conditions, medical intervention
Also a doctor of optometry, this specialized clinician has additional training through residency programs focused on eye disease and conditions. They can provide complete eye care but primarily focus on medical care for eyes, assessing eye health, monitoring and diagnosing diseases.
When to see one: general eye care, annual medical eye exam
This professional is a doctor of optometry (O.D.) known for expertise in providing vision correction and care, though they also can diagnose, treat and manage eye diseases and disorders. When to see one: general eye care, eye checkups, vision tests and eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions
These technicians are trained to design, verify and fit eyeglass lenses and frames, contact lenses and other devices to correct eyesight. They use prescriptions supplied by ophthalmologists or optometrists.
When to see one: glasses and contact lens fitting

2020 wedding plans scotched by the pandemic, a Manalapan mom moved on to mark Year One for her son with an unforgettable event.

The name? That was no problem: Carter’s Carnival. The words lent themselves to a perfect vision, and Alicia Wong of Manalapan had a vision for sure. In decorator Adam Leffel of Hackensack-based Adam Leffel Productions she found the partner to help make it happen.
Oh, and Wong had one thing more: an unused event contract at The Legacy Castle in Pompton Plains.
“My husband Bryan and I were supposed to get married there in 2020,” Wong explains, “but, obviously, things happened.”
The pandemic cancelled the Wongs’s wedding ceremony. Instead, their nuptials were small and private, as any event in October of 2020 had to be. They discussed holding a wedding ceremony once things began to open, but at that point Alicia and Bryan had another priority: their young son, Carter.
“It just made sense to pivot to him,” Wong says.
Wong planned everything personally. “I love planning parties,” she says. “I love to decorate and coordinate, and I
Alicia and Bryan Wong and their son Carter enjoy a family moment during Carter’s birthday party. Alicia took the lead in planning a full-event first birthday for her son, bringing a full vintage carnival to life at The Legacy Castle in Pompton Plains—with the significant help of Hackensack-based Adam Leffel Productions.
Top: The vintage wall decorations were done in-house by Adam Leffel Productions, which also coached the venue on the lighting choices. Bottom left: There weren’t many flowers in the circus-chic décor, but those present bloomed from popcorn buckets. Bottom right: Both Wong and decorator Leffel paid close attention to every detail of the party’s design, including the golden plates and the napkin folds.
Clockwise from top: For the party to be the event Wong imagined, she knew she would need to bring in performers, and Aerial Acrobat Entertainment exceeded expectations; Leffel sourced the balloon arrangements, one of the first things guests saw when they entered the room, from Life O’ the Party Balloons in Hackensack; Leffel’s company created the place cards, which were designed to look like tickets for what might be the greatest show on earth.
knew exactly what I wanted to do from the beginning. I could see it right away.”
What Wong visualized was a full vintage carnival, complete with performers, games and magic. “It needed to be an event,” she says. “I wanted full entertainment and eye-catching visuals. My goal was for it to be more than just something to create memories for our family; I wanted all the guests to leave impressed and have a great time.”
She had the perfect team to make that event a reality. Leffel, a luxury event designer and decorator, prides himself on creating distinctive celebrations. “We need to get into someone’s head to put this kind of event together,” Leffel says. “There are a lot of nuances to it. We need to see their creative vision, and then we offer them options to bring it to life.”
All the décor was done in-house. Leffel and his company crafted the vintage carnival images and then enlarged and printed them for the walls and displays. They created the place settings and the table decorations; they brought in the napkins and linens and created the napkin folds. Leffel’s business thrives on details, and Wong provided him with many of them.
“When we meet a client, we often ask, ‘What kind of adventure are we going on? How deep down the rabbit hole are we going?’” says Leffel. “We got to go pretty far down it with this one. It wasn’t an Alice in Wonderland theme, but working on it felt like that.”
For the party to really shine, both Wong and Leffel knew, there needed to be full commitment to the aesthetic. “Sometimes a client just really has attention to details,” says Leffel. “The whole thing really came together.”
This page, top: A Little Cake in Park Ridge provided a birthday cake that was almost too pretty to eat, though doing so was, according to Wong, Carter’s favorite part of the day. Left: “Everyone said ‘Wow!’” recalls Wong. “Everyone was smiling the whole time.” Wong got the satisfaction of seeing her vision come perfectly to life.
Bottom: Music was provided by a DJ from Hank Lane Music, who delighted a dance floor. Opposite page: “It was a oneof-a-kind event,” recalls Leffel. “A totally customized party. We haven’t done anything exactly like it before or since.”
“Adam was great,” adds Wong. “He made everything easy.”
On the day of the party, the 200 guests arrived to what Leffel calls “a visual feast.” The Legacy Castle’s downstairs room had been transformed down to the lighting, for which Leffel’s company coached the venue. The chandeliers were covered in overlays that turned the light blue, and red lights danced on the walls. The party started with a cocktail hour, where mentalist and magician Jason Silberman walked through the crowd performing tricks.
There were games set up and prizes to win. Aerial Acrobat Entertainment provided acrobats and stilt walkers to wander through the room as the party went on, juggling and interacting with the guests. A DJ provided by Hank Lane Music kept people moving, and a caricature artist from the same company sketched out keepsakes for anyone who wanted one. There was also a photo booth, provided by Off Beet productions. The party wound down with a Venetian Hour catered by The Legacy Castle, with high-end takes on fair food such as cotton candy and soft pretzels.
From this day of frenetic movement, what scene does Wong remember most?
“We all walked in as a family,” she says. “They announced all three of us, and stilt walkers escorted us in. Carter saw everything for the first time. He was always a really chill baby, but I swear he reacted with surprise.”

Maybe modern verbiage overuses the word “iconic,” but perhaps no locale deserves the descriptor more than The Stone Pony. Known for launching the careers of some of New Jersey’s most well-known musical acts, including Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi, this venue continues to try and top itself with every show it puts on. Its Summer Stage concert series is one of the most anticipated events of the season, and new acts come through the doors all year long.

Want more waves near summer’s end? Five great Jersey spots are happy to oblige.
For some it’s the “carrot”: An idyll of sand and sun, the roar of the ocean and the nostalgic smell of lotion. For others it’s the “stick”: Getting through the day anyplace else is just too sticky without those blessed breezes. Whatever your motivation, the beach is the place to be in the waning days of summer, and you can go beyond your favorite locale. Five great spots offer sun, sand and surf aplenty here in the Garden State:
If you’re new to the county and haven’t checked out the entertainment delights and the resort vibes of this town, now’s a great time to head over. Here gorgeous beaches are next-door neighbors to some of the state’s best music, art and nightlife. Places to stay. For luxury and an exclusive, upscale vibes, check out the historic St. Laurent Social Club, described as a “social retreat” and offering a world-class kitchen with food created by chef David Viana. For something more modern, the Asbury Ocean Club Hotel has a garden terrace designed so that pool swimming feels like ocean swimming, with the views to back it up. Places to eat. If you’re hungry for a historical locale (the building itself is breathtaking) and highend takes on classic pub food, you can’t beat The Black Swan Public House, where you can order both fish and chips and chicken tikka masala. If craft cocktails and the vibe of a French café are more your style, Pascal & Sabine offers a full drinks menu and both dinner and brunch menus. What to do besides the beach. Asbury Park is a hotbed of the arts. Want live music? Check out a show at The Stone Pony, the venue that helped launch some of New Jersey’s most famous musical names. What about art galleries? The city has dozens, featuring artists large and small, but we recommend Parlor Gallery for the work of New Jersey-based artists. Something hands-on? Check out places like Hot Sand, a studio where you can try out glass blowing. More information: cityofasburypark.com
At the state’s southernmost point, about an hour and 45 minutes from Monmouth, this historic town, known for its beautiful architecture, is billed as “America’s first summertime resort.”
Its 2.5 miles of beautiful beach are parallel to Beach Avenue, and you’re never far from food, shopping or a bathroom.
Places to stay. If you’re lodging in Cape May, you want to choose a bed-and-breakfast. Most are operated out of the area’s brightly colored Late Victorian buildings, many of them Queen Anne-style structures that resemble something from a storybook. Try the pink-and-white Mason Cottage, located downtown, with its vintage décor, full gourmet breakfast and knowledgeable concierge service. Or the Queen Victoria, designed to take you back to the era the name evokes, with afternoon tea and gas fireplaces in the rooms.
Places to eat. For something hardy and farmto-table, go to the Beach Plum Farm and enjoy a casual meal sitting in the Amish-style barn of a working farm. Something more upscale calling to you? The restaurant 410 Bank Street is constantly ranked as one of the state’s best; it offers FrenchNew Orleans cuisine with a Caribbean flair. What to do besides the beach. This destination is an antiques collector’s dream, with more than a dozen shops waiting for you to explore and find your newest treasure or collectible. If your shopping taste runs more towards the new, you won’t be disappointed either. Locales like Washington Commons and Carpenters Square Mall offer small, curated boutiques with everything from designer clothes to unique art. More information: capemay.com
One of the most iconic vacation destinations in the state, LBI lives and breathes summer fun— and it’s just an hour away. It offers all flavors of beaches, from the peaceful and wide sands with scrubby pines of Barnegat Light to the fluffy sand and rolling dunes of Holgate. Go to the bustling day-tripping centers for a swim or, if you prefer something quiet and serene, try Harvey Cedars’s Sunset Park for natural Shore beauty.
Places to stay. The highly-rated and very luxe Hotel LBI in Ship Bottom has a rooftop restaurant and a full bar, as well as plush suites that can sleep one to eight people, depending on the package. Something smaller? The Sandcastle Bed and Breakfast in Barnegat Light has all the cozy cottage vibes you could want, with world-class amenities and small-town charm.
Places to eat. Viking Fresh Off the Hook offers seafood aplenty. For something that feels like home, Terrace Tavern is a local favorite with fantastic pub food and an extensive drinks menu. What to do besides the beach Visit LBI’s Fantasy Island Amusement Park in Beach Haven, which offers fun for all ages. Rides, sweets, views, classic games and a new arcade—who could say no? Then there’s the same town’s Surflight Theatre, which is staging Hoagy Carmichael’s Stardust Road Sept. 4, 7–8, 11, 14–15. More information: welcometolbi.com
An hour and 40 minutes downstate will take you to Wildwood, a barrier island with wide, sandy beaches and a legacy of summer excellence—its first boardwalk was built in the 1890s. Enjoy five miles of wide, free beaches with white sand and perfect surf. Don’t want to leave Fido at home? North Wildwood has a dog-friendly beach that’s open all year long.
Places to stay. If your main concern is location, Adventurer Oceanfront Inn is for you. Very family friendly and within walking distance of all of Wildwood’s best attractions, this is a fantastic option for a group that’s always on the go. You can also take in the sunset from one of the oceanfront balconies. If you’re craving elegance instead, Madison Resort’s Wildwood Crest Hotel and Beach Resort offers a poolside lounge and chef-created, small-plate meals as well as proximity to the beach.
Places to eat. Wildwood is the spot to visit if you want family-friendly eats and chic nostalgia. Marvis Diner, open for every meal, serves up a full menu of the classics: burgers, fries, disco fries, pancakes, you name it. For something a little more upscale (though just as familyfriendly), check out Royal Grille, which specializes in fresh seafood and homemade desserts. It’s also seaside, so you never need to take a break from the surf.
What to do besides the beach. That boardwalk from the 1890s has grown in the many decades since. Check out the two miles packed end to end with shops, water parks, eateries, entertainment and amusement piers with more than 100 rides and attractions. Every day is a carnival waiting for you and your family to join in! More information: wildwoodsnj.com
Take the Garden State Parkway straight down for an hour and a half and you arrive at this coastal getaway, where the pleasures of the beach are always right at hand. Whether you’re looking for boardwalks packed with activities or somewhere quiet to take in the majesty of the ocean, you’ll find something here.
Places to stay. Like your choice of beaches, your lodging options in the area run the gamut. For those looking for something small and quaint, the Ocean City Mansion, built in 1898, offers beautiful, cozy rooms just a short walk away from the surf, shopping and restaurants. For glamor instead, the boutique accommodations of Coastal Chateau may be right—this spot promises an elevated Shore experience just steps away from everything Ocean City offers. Places to eat. Keep the Shore vibe going through every meal with Oves Restaurant, which has a 55-year legacy at the boardwalk and offers both breakfast and dinner menus. Its apple-cider donuts are famous, its seafood could not be fresher, and you can rent bikes and beach gear on your way out. Want to try something new?
The Hula Restaurant & Sauce Co. serves up a taste of Hawaii.
What to do besides the beach. Ocean City is a safe, flat biking destination, and a beautiful place to take a ride. You may see a group pedal past you on a surrey (a bike built for multiple people). If you’ve always thought that looked like a blast, now is a perfect time—there are plenty of places to rent them (and regular bikes too). While you’re thinking about rentals, you can grab a kayak for the day and take it through the calm water of the creeks and bays to take in the scenery and local wildlife.

Need a break from burgers and hot dogs? These refreshing salads are perfect side dishes—though they’re hearty enough for a main course.
Yields 4-6 servings
INGREDIENTS
n ²/³ cup sliced almonds
n 3 Tbs. sugar
n 8 cups spring greens, baby spinach or your greens of choice
n salt and pepper
n 4 baby seedless
cucumbers, thinly sliced
n 4 green onions, thinly sliced
n 1 cup blueberries
n ¼ cup finely grated
parmesan cheese
Creamy Balsamic Vinaigrette
n ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
n 1 garlic clove, minced
n 2 Tbs. heavy cream
n 2 tsp. Dijon mustard
n 2 tsp. honey
n pinch of salt and pepper
n ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
n 2 Tbs. fresh chives
DIRECTIONS
Creamy Balsamic Vinaigrette
Whisk together the vinegar, garlic, cream, mustard, honey and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stream in the olive oil while whisking until emulsified. Stir in the chives. Serve with your favorite salad! This dressing stays great in the fridge. Just shake or whisk it to combine before serving.
For the Salad
Place the almonds in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Stir in the sugar and cook, stirring often, until the sugar melts and is caramely, coating all of the almonds—about 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer the almonds to a piece of parchment paper to let them cool. Break them into pieces if they are clumped.
In a large bowl, toss the greens with a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Sprinkle on the blueberries, cucumbers, green onions and parmesan cheese. Add the almonds on top. Serve immediately with the balsamic dressing.
“The blueberries in this salad add vitamins C and K and an antioxidant boost to help keep cells healthy. Blueberries contain the most antioxidants of the commonly eaten fruits and vegetables. Look for locally grown, organic blueberries that do not contain pesticides. If you want to make the creamy dressing dairy free, eliminate the cream and combine all the ingredients in a blender on medium speed or use an immersion blender to mix.”

Yields 4-6 servings
INGREDIENTS
n 2 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil
n 2 Tbs. red-wine vinegar
n 1 tsp. Dijon mustard
n ½ tsp. salt
n ½ tsp. ground pepper
n 1 medium English cucumber, diced
n 1 lb. ripe tomatoes, diced
n ¹/³ cup red onion, diced
n ¹/³ cup Kalamata olives, sliced
n ¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped
n feta cheese, for serving (optional)
DIRECTIONS
Whisk oil, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Add cucumber, tomatoes, onion, olives and parsley and toss to coat. Serve sprinkled with feta, if desired.
“Use an extra-virgin olive oil for your salad dressings. Extra-virgin olive oil is higher in beneficial polyphenols, which can help protect against heart disease, type two diabetes and some cancers. They also help to keep your gut healthy. You can substitute the chopped parsley in this recipe for fresh basil or fresh mint, or use a combination of all three. Herbs can pack in as many nutrients as vegetables and they are loaded with a variety of antioxidants.”

The hospital’s therapy dogs Pearl and Lucy are instrumental in furthering our nurturing environment and putting smiles on patients’ faces. Director of Quality & Risk Lynne Koller says, “Christy Wrede is Pearl’s owner and handler, and Lucy is owned by Amanda Shelters. They visit the therapy gym and clinical unit every week.” CEO Beth Sarfaty and HR Director Ursula Covin agree there is a temperament change when the dogs interact with our patients. “The program allows us to get more connected with our patients,” says Ursula. “We start to see their motivation increase and get to see more of their personalities shine through.” Expanding the program with more trained therapy dogs to improve spirits and offer emotional support is Encompass Health’s goal. The flavors at Farmingdale’s L’olivia will remind you of Grandma’s kitchen—if you were very lucky when they handed out grandmas.
About three hours into a morning-to-night outing to a Long Branch beach, the craving for a hefty boardwalk slice hit. My friend and I had packed a small lunch to get us through the time under the sun, and a break for bubble tea and ice cream provided a temporary reprieve from the heat. But this yearning only had one answer: a taste of the Shore’s best pizza.
As soon as we finished our day on the sand, we scanned the assortment of eateries near the beach, but the long lines at each were discouraging. (Did I mention it was the Fourth of July weekend?) So I made the executive decision to drive a little inland to a new restaurant that had recently opened in Farmingdale: L’olivia Pizzeria.
We expected to simply grab a slice or two each from its pizza case, but our minds quickly changed as soon as we walked inside. The clean, modern décor invited us to stay longer than a few minutes, and the mouthwatering, premade slices on display seemed to tease: “Imagine how good we’d look and taste as a whole pie!”
The craving for pizza expanded exponentially into a broader hankering for Italian classics. “We’re eating in,” I told my friend.
The staff was very hospitable, welcoming us like family. The menu boasted both individual and familystyle meals, as well as an assortment of everyday pizzas and specialty pies. Ours were two hungry bellies, so we decided to make this visit a feast and start with an appetizer. Everything looked and sounded great, from the sautéed clams to the sausage and broccoli rabe. We went with eggplant rollatini, a perennial favorite comfort food for many diners. L’olivia’s version hit all the right notes—the three finely rolled pieces of fried eggplant contained a perfect balance of herbs and ricotta, while the marinara resembled a
sauce from Grandma’s kitchen.
As much of a hit as the app was with our taste buds, the meal got even better. We decided to split a bowl of pasta and a full pizza pie. Pasta dishes include go-tos like spaghetti and meatballs and linguine and clams, and the restaurant also offers entrées such as chicken marsala and eggplant parm. For our visit, we tried the seafood fra diavolo—and, boy, were we pleased. The heaping bowl of pasta contained a full catch of fresh shrimp, calamari, mussels and clams, which were served with a spicy (but not fiery) red sauce. When combined with the juices from the shellfish, the sauce was divine. (Pro tip: Save some of the table bread to sop up any remaining red sauce.)
While we enjoyed eating the entrée, my friend and I doubled our pleasure by trading bites of pasta with chomps of pizza. From L’olivia’s specials menu we ordered the veggie pie, which included a garden’s worth of fresh broccoli, onion, peppers, garlic and other greens. OK, I’ll admit that it’s not the oversized boardwalk pizza we’d craved earlier in the day, but the combo of veggies, cheese, sauce and a perfectly crisp crust hit the spot.
Getting filled up with carbs from pizza and pasta is an ideal way (to me, at least) to end any great day along the Shore, but a delectable sweet would make it even better. To cap the meal, we ordered two wonderful cannoli to satisfy our sweet tooths.
As we tapped our own bellies after the filling day, we realized that we might’ve missed out on L’olivia’s delicious fare had we strolled along the beach and searched for a slice from a regular pizza joint. There’s a time and place to do that, of course, but when the heart wants something more, it’s worth a trip to a restaurant like L’olivia to find it.
