EDITOR’S NOTE

Your Health, From A To Z Happy New Year! Here at MORRIS & ESSEX we’re hoping 2024 will be a healthy and rewarding year for you and yours. Residing in a beautiful area like ours is a key ingredient for a good life—but so is enjoying robust health. That’s why we try in every issue to provide, in a reader-friendly way, information that can help you stay well and assure your vitality today and for many tomorrows. In this issue, marking the New Year, we’re outdoing ourselves, with 26 such nuggets of health wisdom, one for each letter of the alphabet. (See “A Healthier You, From A to Z,” on page 16.) Your ultimate source of guidance, of course, is your own trusted medical professionals. (Not the Internet, bulging though it is with informational tidbits, some of them more reliable than others.) But reading our “A to Z” guide can help you make the best use of clinicians’ time, inspiring questions you might wish to ask them. Our guide quotes expert doctors and draws on some of the latest research. After all, new medical research has a funny way of turning yesterday’s confident belief into today’s discarded myth. But it’s not just health questions this issue can help you answer. How, for instance, can you celebrate a relaxed, quiet New Year’s Eve this year? (See page 6.) Where do you turn to convey a message that’s too personal for email or texting, that cries out instead for an elegant version of that old technology called pen and paper? (Page 6.) What might you serve as a scrumptious entrée for a holiday or wintertime dinner? (Page 38.) What is life really like for the high-kicking Rockettes in the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall? (Page 26.) And what steamy-hot wintertime beverage treat is actually full of antioxidants that are good for you? (Page 7.) Finally, if holiday entertaining is on your agenda, you’ll want to check out “Making Spirits Bright,” which starts on page 30. It’s full of practical (yet also inspired!) expert suggestions to make your party a treat for the eyes as well as the taste buds. There’s all of that in this magazine—and more. Each issue of MORRIS & ESSEX strives to be an informative, entertaining slice of life in our beautiful area, and it’s a double slice when an issue sits on the cusp of two calendar years. Let’s honor the old and ring in the new. To your health!

OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTIES.

LETTERS ARE TREASURES

Texts, emails, e-cards and even DMs have taken over as the preferred modes of communication for many of us. Still, there’s something to be said for a handwritten note, letter or thank-you card—especially during the holiday season. “In a world so saturated with technology, a handwritten note stands out more than ever as something special,” says Nina Cardwell, owner of Cambridge Street in Madison. “It really shows the recipient you were thinking of them at that moment; I love reading the words of my family and friends in their unique handwriting. An email or text just can’t replicate that!” Independent stationery stores in Morris and Essex counties are stocked with paper cards, notebooks and sets that you can buy, write out and send—with a stamp, not the click of a button. Some stores even allow you to customize them to fit your personal style (and family name). • ArtiCyn Boutique, 1296 Broad St., Bloomfield, 973.866.5454; articynboutique.com • Cambridge Street, 7 Waverly Pl., Madison, 973.593.0073; cambridge-street.com

QUIET REVELRY

Who says celebrating a change in the calendar must be loud and raucous? There are low-key alternatives for seeing in 2024 with friends. For instance: • Host a dinner party. Instead of dining out, whip up some easy apps and cocktails for you and a small group of friends. Keep things casual rather than stressing yourself out with a formal sit-down dinner; no one is that hungry by midnight anyway! Stock up: Our counties are home to many gift shops—Pazzazed in Montclair, Just Jersey in Morristown and Regalo Gifts in Morris Plains, for example—where you can find perfect serving ware and dishes for the occasion. • Plan a game night. Tell guests to bring their favorite board games and wear their PJs to your New Year’s Eve game night. This is an invite anyone above age 35 will be hard put to refuse. Stock up: Shop for board games, puzzles and such for adults and kids at Toy Division in Maplewood, Just Kidding Around in Montclair and Sparkhouse Toys in South Orange. • Organize a cookie exchange. Christmas is over, but so what? Nobody’s going to turn down amazing homemade baked goods on Dec. 31. The genius of having each guest bring a treat is that you don’t have to prepare too much as host. To up the ante, assign a few people as judges and hold a baking contest, with the winner going home with a “white elephant” gift. Stock up: Get all your baking necessities at a store like Williams-Sonoma in Short Hills or Michaels in East Hanover. Then shop for ingredients at a mom-and-pop shop such as Market Place at Roxbury in Flanders or Green’s Natural Foods in Chester. • Make it a movie evening. Have you seen all the films that will be garnering Oscars in the new year? See if you can get any of them on demand on a streaming network like Prime or Netflix. You can set up shop in your family room, or rent a projector outside if you and your guests don’t mind the cold. Stock up: For an outside movie screening, make a trip to Fortunoff Backyard Store in Livingston for an outdoor heater and Ramsey Outdoor in Succasunna or REI in East Hanover for heated blankets. You can rent a projector through Rockaway-based AVR Rentals. (P.S.: Also reach out to the Music and Media Reference Desk at the Morris County Library, as the folks there lend out projectors and screens at no charge). Indoors or out, don’t forget the wine and popcorn! MORRISANDESSEXMAG.COM

PUPPY LOVE

Dog: Kurtis, 1-year-old Maltipoo Owner: Donna Gelber of Denville What’s a mama to do when all five of her (human) kids have left the nest? Adopt a new furry friend. Donna Gelber says her pup provides her with “companionship and unconditional love.” He’s also her little helper at work, accompanying Gelber at CAVU Trampoline & Tumbling gymnastics center in Mountain Lakes. “He brings so much joy to the children,” she says. “When he doesn’t feel like ‘working,’ he goes to doggie day care to play with his friends.” Kurtis has a keen sense of smell and a passion for eating the stuffing inside his toys, and his favorite snack is watermelon. Plus, he’s sporty, as he loves to play fetch and to dance. “He can stand on his back legs for a long time, and he jumps really high and does flips—perfect for a trampoline and tumbling facility!” To see your pet in a future issue of Morris & Essex, send us his or her picture and some fun facts to rita.guarna@wainscotmedia.com, or shoot us a DM @morrisessexmag.

CUCKOO FOR COCOA

An excuse to eat more chocolate? Don’t mind if we do. Cocoa powder, found in chocolate, contains polyphenols, antioxidants that help improve cholesterol and blood-sugar levels and reduce the risk of heart disease, as well as theobromine, which aids in reducing inflammation. Not too shabby for an ingredient found in a large chunk of our favorite winter treats! Of course, moderation is key—and dark chocolate is preferred over the milk variety—but we say when it comes to cocoa, the more the merrier. Rosalie Gennarelli, owner of Zigarelli Chocolates in East Hanover, may be biased, but she says dark chocolate in particular has many benefits. It’s good for blood pressure and contains antioxidants, to name two. “We have customers who purchase seven squares of dark chocolate and eat one a day!” she says. For a festive, delicious treat, Gennarelli suggests putting a gourmet dark chocolate mint truffle into a cup of hot cocoa. Happy chocolate-ing!

CULINARY CORNER DOUBLY GOOD NEWS

The owners of The Brookdale restaurant and bar in Bloomfield have opened two sister eateries in town: Fanny’s and Ladyfingers Bakery + Bar (and they’re right next door to each other). Fanny’s is an Italian restaurant with recipes inspired by the owners’ “nonna,”—it boasts a meticulously curated wine list as well as specialty cocktails such as negronis and spritzes. Ladyfingers is a bakery that, in addition to pastries, baked goods and coffee, has a wine and cocktail menu. It’s the perfect new spot for girls’ nights out or dates. • 1109 Broad St., Bloomfield, 973.343.5109; fannysitalian.com MOONING OVER MUMBAI

Whether you love Indian food or are hoping to expand your palate with the country’s diverse flavors in the new year, Mumbai Maskaa has you covered. This new Montclair spot claims to be a “love letter” to India’s largest city. The menu features classic Indian dishes such as chicken tikka masala and curry with fish or goat, as well as plenty of vegetarian options like cottage cheese (paneer) soaked in tomato sauce or a spinach-based gravy. And try Mumbai Maska Pav, a street-food dish that’s a thick vegetable curry served with warm bread. • 150 Valley Rd., Montclair, 973.200.2024; mumbaimaskaa.com COMING SOON FROM TAIWAN

The Taiwan-based bakery 85 Degrees Bakery and Café will be opening in East Hanover later this year (exact date still uncertain), marking only its second foray onto the East Coast. Expect plenty of made-in-house baked goods and crafted beverages as well as treats inspired by Asian ingredients such as ube, matcha and taro. • 240 Rte. 10 and Murray Rd., East Hanover; 85cbakerycafe.com

The project titled “Tie it to a Balloon” began as a mural painted on the back wall of Ridgewood Avenue School. Through Ava’s work with her former principal and faculty members, the project has since become a digital pamphlet of worksheets that teach children mindfulness techniques to help when they feel overwhelmed. Multiple public schools in Glen Ridge have started using these worksheets in class; the program is also available through a link on the Glen Ridge School District and public library websites, as well as via free download at tieittoaballoon.com. …Olivia de Castro of Verona, who since graduating from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn has been working as an illustrator. HEALTH NEWS ACID BLOCKER RISK

LONGER ALLERGY SEASON

A new study has shown that common acid blockers called proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs—which represent most overthe-counter and prescription acid blockers used to treat heartburn—are a major risk factor for dementia. On the other hand, chewable antacids— Rolaids, for example—and Pepcid, a H2 (histamine type 2 receptor blocker), are not associated with increased dementia risk. —Alzheimers & Dementia

WOMEN TO WATCH SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION

Morris and Essex County is home to some of the most innovative and successful businesses in the country. Many are owned and led by women. On the following pages, learn more about them and how they plan to be difference-makers in the year ahead.

Christine M. Dalena, Esq.

Although Ms. Dalena’s specialty is in handling family law related matters (divorce, dissolution of civil unions, adoptions, custody & parenting time, marital torts, paternity, co-habitation agreements & pre-nuptial agreements), she also has extensive experience in other areas of the law—real estate transactions and prior general litigation—which allows her to handle a broader spectrum of issues that customarily arise in the matrimonial law context. Each case is unique so she employs the most appropriate strategy—mediation, collaborative, arbitration or litigation— based on the particular circumstances that exist in each individual matter. Her mediation and collaborative training skills, coupled with her knowledge of the law, ability to handle complex financial issues, and compassion for her client’s needs and goals have enabled her to handle the intricacies of family law successfully. Ms. Dalena is a certified collaborative law attorney and court-approved mediator. She is on the executive board of NJ Collaborative Law Group. She has been awarded an AV preeminent rating for professional excellence by Martindale-Hubbel.

Tanya L. Freeman, Esq. 100 Eagle Rock Ave., Suite 105, East Hanover, NJ 07936 | 973.939.0100 | www.tanyafreemanlaw.com A simple divorce? A routine child custody case? They don’t exist. There’s nothing easy about living through a separation when children, assets, and damaged relationships are involved. Families find themselves in an emotional and financial minefield where the slightest misstep can be painful and costly. For many people, there’s only one person they trust to help them navigate a path forward: Tanya L. Freeman. For over 10 years, Tanya Freeman has been a powerful advocate for her clients at the bargaining table, in the courtroom, and wherever they need her to be. Her tactics are no secret—and neither is her skill. She examines every key aspect of a case, pinpointing weaknesses, finding opportunities, and always seeking the most beneficial outcome for her clients. Clients value her acumen and experience, but just as important, they appreciate her caring, compassion, and empathy. They know that with Tanya at their side, they’re ready to face whatever comes next.

FOR AISALCOHOL

Beer, wine and liquor are ingrained in the culture as accompaniments to good food and good times. But the health benefits claimed for alcohol in some past studies have been questioned by experts, who wonder: Did they show a real cause-andeffect connection, or was it merely that healthy people did more socializing, and thus more imbibing? One thing doctors agree on is that you’ll have a safer, healthier 2024 if you avoid heavy drinking. The Mayo Clinic suggests limits of one drink a day for women, two drinks a day for men, one drink being 12 ounces of beer, five ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits. (FYI: Mayo also says that even light drinking brings a “tiny” increased risk of some cancers.)

FOR MANNER B ISBEDSIDE

When you have a health issue—especially a serious illness like breast cancer—you want a health care professional you trust and feel comfortable with. According to a study from New Jersey’s own Rutgers University, an empathetic doctor makes a difference in reducing patient anxiety and uncertainty. “Breast cancer care is very specialized, so you want to find a doctor and/or surgeon who is not only fellowship-trained and up to date with the latest technology, but also someone who’ll provide empathy and compassion,” says M. Michele Blackwood, M.D., chief of breast surgery, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and northern regional director of breast services for RWJBarnabas Health. “Once you find out their credentials, you want to be on the same wavelength. You’ll want to know that a physician or surgeon is not just someone who’s providing treatment and operating. You want someone who’ll provide support to you and your family, someone who’ll want to know your life, someone who’ll want to know that you’ll be cared for postoperative.” Patients should “feel comfortable and have a relationship with their doctor and the entire team,” adds Dr. Blackwood. mushrooms and soybeans, which naturally contain spermidine.

Hitting 10,000 steps a day isn’t the only route to heart health. A new British study has found that climbing five or more flights of stairs daily, or about 50 steps, was linked with a lower risk of heart attacks and strokes. Researchers determined that really, any short burst of high-intensity activity is good for your heart, and it’s especially fitting if you can’t get a full workout in. So maybe 2024 is the time to take up jump rope?

FOR D ISDIETING

Europeans have been onto something for centuries with the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes healthy fats and lots of meat and veggies. Turns out that older people who follow a lower-calorie Mediterranean diet and exercised—even minimally—up to six days a week gained muscle and lost weight by the end of year, and kept it off three years later, a new study reports. A lower-calorie diet also can reduce the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. “The intake of highly processed foods, high sugar intake and

G ISGUTFORHEALTH pro-inflammatory foods, including lactose, can contribute to the development of dementia (Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia),” says Theresa Redling, D.O., chief of Geriatric Health and Disease Management at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. “High sugar foods can contribute to ‘metabolic syndrome,’ obesity and diabetes, which are risk factors for Alzheimer’s. All diseases are related to inflammation in the body. Foods that increase inflammation include processed foods, high trans-fat foods, meat and meat products and dairy.”

F

IS FOR FERTILITY

The older we get, the harder it is to get pregnant, since women’s egg quality and quantity decline with age. But recent research has determined that an anti-aging supplement called spermidine made middle-aged mice more fertile. Experts think this shows promise for humans too, and just might be the “holy grail” of fertility over age 40. In the meantime, eat more cheddar cheese,

You may want to invest in a good prebiotic vitamin. A new study found that this dietary supplement, which helps maintain good bacteria in the gut, not only helps with digestion but also with weight. Consuming significant amounts of prebiotics was found to decrease the brain’s desire for high-calorie foods, resulting in weight loss. Besides the packaged kind, prebiotics are found in onions, leeks, artichokes, wheat, bananas and chicory root.

FOR H ISHAPPINESS

Happiness is in our blood—literally. According to recent research, some people are more genetically inclined to be happy than others, and their happiness can vary slightly but mostly remains consistent from age 12 to age 73. This was true for people of all backgrounds. Still, even if you’re not more genetically joyful, it helps to do more of whatever it is that makes you happy—other research suggests that happy folks tend to have lower blood pressure and heart rates, reducing the danger of heart disease.

E IS FOR EYES

Carrots help your vision, sure, but apparently grapes do too! Eating this antioxidant-heavy fruit (on its own, not in wine) for 16 consecutive weeks was found in a recent study to help improve eye health and vision in older adults. It could be due to polyphenols, which are phytochemicals found in grapes and other foods such as blueberries, cherries and leafy green vegetables that work as antioxidants that can help combat inflammation in the body. Studies showed that certain antioxidant vitamins can slow the progression of intermediate and advanced macular degeneration and are commonly recommended to patients, and this study suggests grapes have a similar benefit. Good news is there are black, green and red grapes, which all taste slightly different, or you can opt for a sweeter variety such as cotton candy grapes or mini-champagne grapes.

FOR I ISINDIGESTION

The orange-hued spice turmeric has been shown in a new study to treat symptoms of indigestion such as bloating, nausea and stomach pain just as well the over-the-counter omeprazole product Prilosec, both on its own and in combination with meds. People in Asia have been using this spice for this purpose for centuries, but the Western world is catching on. Sprinkle it on rice or cauliflower, in soups or stews, or even use it when baking cookies and cakes.

J

IS FOR JOINTS

Seventy percent of older adults experience pain in their joints, which are intricate structures made up of bone, cartilage, ligaments, tendons and synovial fluid. But you don’t need to live with achy joints. There are many remedies for joint pain, including over-the-counter hot and cold packs as well as anti-inflammatories such as Advil and Aleve, says Jaclyn Jankowski, D.O., an orthopedic surgeon with RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group. Gentle exercise, regular massages and weight management can also help, since being overweight puts added stress on joints. “Exercises should be low impact, such as leg raises, squats and swimming.” Dr. Jankowski says. “Do what you can tolerate and always take extra care to be safe. One of the worst things to do is to remain stagnant, as this can promote joint stiffness.” Consult your physician if joint pain persists after a couple of weeks or if joints can’t move, she adds.

K IS FOR KINDNESS

Doing even a small generous thing for someone else has been found to ease symptoms of depression and anxiety. “Popular lore advocates for random acts of kindness,” notes Ari Hahn, Ph.D., L.C.S.W., who runs a private cognitive behavioral therapy office in Morristown. Still, he notes, “random acts done once in a while and only when the opportunity

arises are not likely to do the trick.” Instead, strive for consistent charity and goodwill. “Start with a daily goal of one or two acts of kindness, record them in a journal to promote consistency and increase the amount weekly or bi-weekly,” he says. “You will soon notice more opportunities, others will appreciate you and you will begin to appreciate yourself.”

FOR COVID LISLONG

What differentiates people who recover quickly from the coronavirus from long-COVID sufferers, whose symptoms last beyond three months? Reduced levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin, according to a recent study. Lower serotonin levels were found to cause problems with cognition seen in some long-COVID patients. The next step is most likely clinical trials to see how increasing serotonin improves symptoms. For now, certain supplements (such as those containing creatine), exercise, more sunlight and foods containing tryptophan (like turkey) can increase serotonin levels.

FOR M ISMENOPAUSE Feeling extra stressed lately? That

MORRISANDESSEXMAG.COM

MSX.1223. A to Z.indd 20

could be why your menopause symptoms are more pronounced too. A recent study found that women who reported higher stress levels, anxiety or depression and/or constipation also had more severe menopausal symptoms. However, these symptoms can be managed. “Hormone therapy is the most efficacious way to treat menopausal symptoms,” says Fatima Naqvi, M.D., medical director, Atlantic Medical Group Outpatient Obstetrics and Gynecology, Atlantic Health System. “Treatment can include non-hormonal methods as well. This includes therapies involving medication that treat anxiety and depression. There are newer medications that work on the hypothalamus that control body temperature.” Alternative therapies can include acupuncture, cognitive behavior therapy, hypnosis and compounded medications, though there aren’t enough “rigorous trials or studies supporting these” options, Dr. Naqvi says.

IS FOR BITING N NAIL

Quitting a nail-biting or skin-picking habit won’t happen overnight, but slowly but surely “habit replacement” can help. In a recent study, nail biters who were taught to replace their habit with another, such as rubbing the fingertips, palm or back of the arm at least twice a day, saw a reduction in their biting habits. Next time you feel the urge to pick or bite, try doing something else with your hands, such as sitting on them or texting a friend. If you want to quit this habit for good, though, seek out a qualified therapist.

FOR O ISOBESITY

Here in New Jersey, the prevalence of obesity in adults is slightly lower than the national average (28.6 percent vs. 32.3 percent), but many of us are still clinically overweight. And a recent paper claims that the biggest culprit in obesity is fructose. This sugar is found naturally in fruit, but is also added to artificial sweeteners and many processed foods. To lower your fructose intake, start by not buying foods whose nutrition labels list fructose, crystalline fructose or honey among the ingredients.

PIS FOR PICKLEBALL.

An Apple Health study found that both tennis and pickleball have equivalent health benefits to its players, boosting overall health as well as balance and coordination. Still, tennis elbow and rotator cuff injuries are common with both of these upper-extremity-heavy sports. To avoid injury, warm up for pickleball with “a dynamic hamstring stretch, a core stretch or a quad stretch with high knees,” says Raphael Longobardi, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and athletic injuries at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. “You’ll also want to stretch your upper extremities with some shoulder and wrist stretches.”

FOR S ISSKIN

Topical creams can help make your skin look and feel its best, but that’s not the only way to get that natural glow. One study found that weightlifting can improve skin elasticity; another unrelated study concluded that listening to relaxing music can help skin look more rejuvenated too. (Taylor Swift was named the world’s “most relaxing artist.”)

Q IS FOR QUALITY CARBS.

It’s quality, not quantity when it comes to the carbohydrates you consume. New research found that high-quality carbohydrates such as whole grains promoted less weight gain in middle-aged folks, while lower-quality carbohydrates (those with refined carbs or added sugars) resulted in more weight gain. That’s because high-quality carbohydrates go through less processing, contain more nutrients and are higher in fiber. And because high-quality carbs are made of long, complex molecule strains, they take the body longer to digest—meaning they’ll keep you energized throughout the day. When you dine, try to fill your plate with high-quality carbs such as non-starchy vegetables, high fiber fruits like berries, apples, pears and kiwi and grains such as farro, quinoa, buckwheat, steel cut oats, barley, beans and lentils.

R IS FOR RUNNING.

Running has a plethora of benefits for our physical health, but now it’s been proven to have advantages for mental health too. Researchers found in a recent study that in some people, running regularly can be just as helpful as antidepressants for treating depression and anxiety symptoms. The reasoning? Running helps increase blood flow to the brain and boosts levels of endocannabinoids, a biochemical substance produced by the body that promotes feelings of calmness and reduces anxiety, says Peter DeLuca, M.D., chief of sports medicine and physician at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. “Running also reduces stress, enhances mood and memory and improves one’s ability to learn.” Not sure how to begin a new running routine? Dr. DeLuca recommends starting in moderation and paying attention to your body to avoid overexertion. “Before you run, perform dynamic stretching and follow the run with static stretches,” he says. “Static stretching will remove the lactic acid that has filled your muscles during running and exercise as well as promote balance and flexibility.”

A new way to help prevent diabetes may just be your cup of tea. Researchers found that drinking a cup of dark tea (such as black tea) once a day without any added sweeteners may reduce your risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Black tea contains antioxidants called flavonoids—which are also found in fruits and vegetables—which are linked to reducing high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity. And if you’re looking to cut out sugary drinks and soda, switching to tea is a good option. Sinofilia Tea Shop in Boonton, for instance, is known for its Oolong tea, another black tea, which is known to reduce and lower cholesterol.

FOR ULTRAFOODS UISPROCESSED

Having trouble putting down that tub of ice cream or sealing up the bag of chips may not just be about self-control. Instead, a new study found that it could be because ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have an addictive quality to them. Researchers found that UPFs’ ingredients make their way to the brain faster than minimally processed foods do, which is why we want to eat more and more of them. This isn’t to say that everyone who craves salt is addicted to it, but it is worth keeping in mind next time you go for a (second or third) handful of Lay’s.

IS FOR VITAMIN B

Out of the 13 vitamins our bodies need, eight of them are part of the vitamin B subgroup, including B12, which helps make our DNA and our red blood cells. Vitamin B12 deficiency has recently been linked with chronic inflammation and a range of health problems. You may be vitamin B12-deficient if you feel unusually tired or weak or are experiencing gastrointestinal issues. Your primary care physician can run a blood test to see if your B12 levels are normal or on the lower end.

FOR W ISWALKING

No time for a full-on workout? Two minutes will do. Even just 60–120 seconds a day of vigorous activity—power walking, climbing stairs or even chasing after your kids—can lower

your risk of certain cancers, according to a new study. If you can’t make it to a gym, there are many ways to get a workout around the house, including raking leaves in fall and shoveling snow in winter, or even taking a walk and doing a few laps around the neighborhood or local park. Can yard work replace a 30-minute HIIT session at the gym? Probably not, but until you can pump iron and get the appropriate amount of exercise, the key is to keep muscles loose and blood flowing. This will stimulate your mind and improve mental as well as physical fitness.

FOR XISX-RAYS

Your dental office may inspire memories of wearing those heavy lead aprons or thyroid collars during X-rays, but you may not be doing so for much longer. A recent study found that the radiation from X-rays does not cause genetic mutations or diseases, and the risk of thyroid cancer is low, meaning that these aprons may not be necessary.

FOR Y ISYAWNING

Yawning has long baffled researchers—why do we do it, and what is the point? Experts have said a yawn releases hormones that jolt you awake—temporarily—by increasing your heart rate. But new studies suggest that yawning may be a way for us to avoid harm. The logic is that if you see someone around you yawning, you’ll be more vigilant to threats in an attempt to protect that overly tired person.

FOR Z ISZZZS

(You knew this one was coming, didn’t you?) Here’s good news for folks who “snooze” the alarm every morning. In a new sleep study, people who snoozed for an extra 30 minutes performed just as well on cognitive tests as their friends and neighbors who jolted right out of bed. And grabbing that bonus Z-time apparently did not dampen the snoozers’ mood. So don’t feel too guilty about hitting that button—those extra few minutes may make you feel more awake once you’re up and at ’em.

LIFE AS A

ROCKETTE FIVE LOCAL WOMEN WHO APPEAR ON RADIO CITY’S FAMOUS STAGE TELL WHY THEY GET A KICK OUT OF IT. BY RITA GUARNA

Photos courtesy of MSG Entertainment

It’s a cherished holiday-season tradition for families who live in our area: the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. And the high-kicking Rockettes are an iconic highlight of the show. They make it look easy, as the saying goes, but of course these are talented, well-conditioned athletes with discipline, stamina and practiced skill. Morris & Essex wanted to find out just what it’s like to be a Rockette, so we interrogated five experts: Rockettes who hail from our two counties. They are Jaclyn de Nicola from Nutley (who joined the cast in 2021), Ellen Mihalick from Randolph (2013), Megan Levinson from North Caldwell (2010), LaTarika Pierce from Orange (2019) and Kristen Welsh of Bloomfield (2017). What inspired you to become a Rockette? JACLYN DE NICOLA: Like most younger siblings, I wanted to be just like my older sister. She danced at a local studio, so I begged my parents to enroll me in dance as well. And when they brought us to see the Christmas Spectacular for the first time, I knew immediately that I wanted to be

a Rockette. I was only 5 years old, and I remember being completely entranced by the Rockettes and moved by the joy of the show. There is still no better feeling for me. ELLEN MIHALICK: Growing up in New Jersey, it was a yearly Christmas tradition for my family to go into New York City and see the Rockettes. As a little girl who loved dancing, I looked up at the women sparkling and kicking on stage and knew I wanted to be up there one day. I have a picture from when I was 4 years old underneath the Radio City marquee, and now it is truly a dream come true to have the same picture in costume from when I joined the Rockettes. MEGAN LEVINSON: Witnessing their incredible work ethic, teamwork, strength and beauty both on and off the stage during my early dance years. As a young girl performing as Clara in the Christmas Spectacular, I was in awe of the Rockettes, and those memories motivated me to pursue my dream of joining the line one day. LATARIKA PIERCE: I was introduced to the Rockettes by my middle-school dance teacher.

MORRISANDESSEXMAG.COM

27

When I went home and did my research, I was amazed at seeing such incredible women perform. After participating in a Rockette Experience class and learning choreography from the show, I immediately knew that I wanted to become a Rockette. KRISTEN WELSH: My parents started taking me to see the Rockettes at age 3 and it has been our holiday tradition every year since. From the very first time I saw the Rockettes perform, I knew that’s what I wanted to do with my life. I was drawn to their precise and detail-oriented movement, the class and grace that they all carried themselves with. And I was—and still am—inspired by the fact that we are an all-female company, representing women from all walks of life. Tell us a backstage story. J.D.N.: It was the third show of the day, and I hadn’t reapplied my makeup in between shows. (We do all of our own hair and makeup.) When I finished performing our showstopper, “New York at Christmas,” I came backstage to find our ensemble laughing uncontrollably. Turns out my

DECEMBER 2023/JANUARY 2024

11/21/23 2:21 PM

false eyelash had fallen off mid-number and was stuck on my cheek. My next quick change was spent laughing so hard I could barely breathe. E.M.: Behind the scenes, we have an incredible team of wardrobe and crew making magic happen. There is a moment in the show where the Rockettes rise up to the stage level on one of the hydraulic elevators. When we are pre-set below stage level, it has become a tradition for me to play a game of charades with the crew up in the wings. M.L.: During our last show of a four-show day, our dance captain hides paper chestnuts backstage. In the short breaks between numbers, we scramble to find as many as we can, and the dressing room with the most chestnuts wins. It never fails to bring laughter and excitement to our backstage moments. L.P.: During the change between “New York at Christmas” and “Here Comes Santa Claus,” I grabbed the wrong hat and beard and didn’t realize it until I was on stage. They both were too big and I spent the entire “Here Comes Santa Claus” number unable to see, as the mustache from the beard was tickling my nose! K.W.: This is actually on stage. During one of our tap numbers, “Rag Dolls,” we have a brief moment where you’ll see us being silly as we drag our Rag Doll blocks into a new formation. We get to “improv” our movements. Offstage, before each show, we pick a fun theme for our movement during those few

eight counts. The themes vary from picking an instrument to “play” to pretending to move in “slo-mo” before jumping into our next bit of choreography. Your favorite number? J.D.N.: The opening number, “Sleigh Ride,” by far. Each time I hear the music, my mind immediately flashes back to memories of myself as a little girl bouncing out of my seat at Radio City, completely starstruck by the image of the Rockettes lining the stage for the first time—sandwiched between my parents and glancing over at my sister in excitement. The first lyric, “Ring Out Those Bells, Those Christmas Bells” still leaves me with full-body chills. E.M.: “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.” Every Rockette since 1933 has worn those iconic costumes and marched those steps, so it is an honor to uphold that legacy. I also love our newest number, the “Dance of the Frost Fairies,” a stunning lyrical dance where the Rockettes are accompanied by our high-tech fairy drones, turning Radio City into a magical winter wonderland. M.L.: “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” has historical significance, having been a part of the show since 1933 and performed by every Rockette. “Rag Dolls” allows us to engage with the audience, and “New York at Christmas” embodies classic glamour, highlighted by the iconic kickline at the end. L.P.: “Dance of the Frost Fairies,” which was

MORRISANDESSEXMAG.COM

MSX.1223.rockettes.indd 28

28

reimagined in 2022 to include the Rockettes as whimsically winged fairies who dance alongside fairy-drones that fly high above the audience. To me, this number embodies what it means to be a Rockette. Our costumes are all unique and we enter the stage at different times during the number. We all bring our own light and eventually come together to create a cohesive unit. K.W.: “Sleigh Ride.” It’s the very first time you see the Rockettes in the 90-minute production, and as the curtain rises all you can see are our silhouettes in our stunning, velvet reindeer costumes and antlers. It’s my favorite moment in the show because it’s the calm before the storm. It’s a brief moment of complete stillness when all 6,000 members of our audience have a moment to take in the beauty of the Rockettes. Advice for would-be Rockettes? J.D.N.: Never give up. Although it was my lifelong goal, it took me over six years to finally land the job. It was a journey for me to discover who I was as a dancer, what my strengths and weaknesses were, and what I could improve upon each time I entered that audition room. I was inspired to become the most versatile version of myself. Also, do it all! Take every style of dance, challenge your performance quality in other art forms, crosstrain in fitness—because it all contributes to being a well-rounded dancer. E.M.: Hard work pays off! There is absolutely

DECEMBER 2023/JANUARY 2024

11/20/23 1:22 PM

nothing that you cannot do. If you dream big, you can make it happen. M.L.: Focus on honing your dance skills in ballet, jazz and tap. Embrace hard work, discipline and perseverance, as these qualities are essential in the competitive world of professional dance. Always be humble, open to continuous learning and cherish the process (the small, big, high and low moments). L.P.: Always bring yourself to the room. You have something special that no one else has. While the Rockettes are about precision and performing in unison, it is also about bringing the joy that only you can bring to the line. K.W.: Never give up on yourself. Remember what makes you special and unique as a dancer and let that be the fuel for your confidence. The path to becoming a professional dancer isn’t easy, and you will receive many rejections. Going into every audition confident in what you bring to the table will keep you pushing through. And when the moment of success arrives, it will feel so glorious and so worth the fight. What do you love about your hometown? J.D.N.: I’m of Italian descent, and Nutley is deeply rooted in Italian culture. Its pizzerias, restaurants and bakeries are among the best in New Jersey. My dad cooks a big “Seven Fishes” Christmas Eve dinner every year, and my mom makes her famous gravy and meatballs every Sunday. I feel very blessed to have grown up in

a small town that shares those values of love, family and community. E.M.: I love Randolph for its charming suburban lifestyle, while still being so close to NYC. I love the quick and easy train ride that allows friends and family to come experience the magic of New York at Christmas. M.L.: North Caldwell’s a close-knit community, where lifelong friendships and cherished memories were formed. Additionally, its proximity to NYC, beaches and mountains provided a diverse range of experiences that enriched my upbringing. L.P.: No matter how long I’ve been away, Orange always feels like home when I return. I can go to a grocery store and run in to a classmate from high school or a teacher I had in elementary school. In 2022, I was an honoree for Women’s Month along with three other influential women from my hometown. I’m grateful for the support and love my hometown always shows me. K.W.: I grew up in Milltown, and I absolutely loved it. It’s a quaint, classic Americana town, filled with hard-working people. Now I reside in Bloomfield with my fiancé and dog, and we absolutely love it. Bloomfield is an extremely diverse town, filled with a wide range of cuisine, music and art. What do you do during the off season? J.D.N.: By the end of the holiday season, I am in need of some downtime. Once I feel fully reju-

MORRISANDESSEXMAG.COM

MSX.1223.rockettes.indd 29

29

venated, I love getting back to honing my craft. The Rockettes are renowned for their precision style, so it is a luxury to explore different styles and go out of our comfort zone in the off-season. My sister, who first inspired me to dance, is now a physical therapist and still my best friend. I have also found a love in baking and founded my own at-home cookie company called Jazzy Jac’s Cookies. I spend time with my husband, our basset hound, Franklin, and my amazing family. E.M.: I live in Manhattan, but I head home frequently to teach at the dance studios that got me where I am today. Those are Art of Dance (Chester), NJ Dance Theatre Ensemble (Summit), Mayo Performing Arts Center (Morristown) and Broadway Bound Dance Center (Teaneck). I have also toured with other shows including An American in Paris. I love to travel and take pictures kicking in other countries—30 and counting! M.L.: I teach jazz dance theory as an adjunct professor at Kean University, coach fitness at F45 and mentor athletes and performers on performance mindset. L.P.: I perform at events around the city and teach dance. I also participate in the Stage Door Tour that runs year-round at Radio City. K.W.: I’m a professional fitness trainer, but I also audition for and perform in other shows. I’ve performed in other cities around the country, as well as at Carnegie Hall, Off-Broadway and, of course, Radio City Music Hall!

MAKE A QUICK

The brief trips below are just right for five kinds of travelers—or maybe for five facets When family Christmas or Hanukkah traditions prevail, we usually spend those holidays opening presents, and New Year’s Eve is often celebrated with loved ones watching on TV as the ball drops in Times Square. But what to do during the week in between? You’re off from work, and schools are closed—it’s a perfect time for a quick getaway. Here are five destination ideas within an easy drive, meant for five “types” of travelers. But feel free to shake things up. After all, as five teens learned in the classic movie The Breakfast Club, each of us is really not just a “type” but a mix of different types and passions: A back-to-nature outdoorsman may secretly crave a cheesesteak, while a meticulous historical researcher may be pining—at this time of year—for nothing so much as a refreshing day at a spa. Which “you” will take this trip?

FOR THE ADVENTURE SEEKER IN YOU:

FOR YOUR INNER FOOD FANATIC:

VERNON, NEW JERSEY

HYDE PARK, NEW YORK

You may have visited Mountain Creek Resort in Vernon during the warm-weather season to zipline and mountain-bike, but the thrills don’t end in winter. There are 46 ski and snowboard trails, including slopes for all skill levels, from beginners to future Olympians. If you’re into hotdogging, Mountain Creek has multiple terrain parks where you can show off your skills and aerials. Not great on skis or a snowboard yet? Lessons are available—or head to the dedicated snowtubing park, try Sno-Go biking or simply lounge in the lodge with a hot chocolate. If you plan on going more than once during winter break, consider a Triple Play Card, which authorizes three anytime visits during winter—no restrictions, no reservations, no blackout dates. Beyond adventure: Want to rest achy muscles after a day of skiing? Check out the accommodations of The Appalachian, a slopeside hotel with rooms featuring fireplaces, kitchens and amazing views. Guests also have access to the heated outdoor pool and hot tub. Information: mountaincreek.com

There’s no shortage of great places to eat in our area, but take a trip to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., if you want to see where some of the top chefs in the country got their start. Three student- and faculty-staffed restaurants are open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays for lunch and dinner (consider making reservations), serving everything from Italian to French to new American cuisine. A fourth, Apple Pie Bakery Café, offers sweet selections for takeout only, but its dining room is open for visitors to use. Beyond food: Before you head home, sign up for a tour of the Vanderbilt Mansion and the longtime home of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor. Both sites are within three miles of the Culinary Institute. Information: ciachef.edu

GETAWAY of yourself that are itching to be set free.

FOR THE HISTORY BUFF IN YOU:

FOR YOU, THE EAGER LEARNER:

FOR THE YOU YEARNING TO BE PAMPERED:

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

CAPE MAY, NEW JERSEY

A quick drive from here will lead you to Camden, where you can bring the family aboard Battleship New Jersey Museum & Memorial. It’s open every day, with artifacts and exhibits that give visitors a look at the country’s military history. When you’re ready to dive deeper into the story, head over the Benjamin Franklin Bridge into Philadelphia. America’s birthplace is the home to Independence National Historic Park and Independence Hall, where our country’s forefathers adopted the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. A few steps away is the Liberty Bell—you can read about and take photos with the famed bell, which once rang in the tower of the Pennsylvania State House. (No cracks about the crack, please.) Also nearby are the Betsy Ross House and The Franklin Institute, one of the oldest science museums. Beyond history: Whether you’re a first-timer to the city or a frequent visitor, a trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art should be on the agenda (a photo on the iconic Rocky steps is a must), as well as a stop at the Reading Terminal Market and John’s Roast Pork for cheesesteaks. Information: discoverphl.com

Traveling into Gotham during the holidays can be a challenge for drivers, but one reason you should consider heading in is to see what’s new at the American Museum of Natural History. There’s a lesson to be learned in every hall and gallery, and plenty that simply wows, from the 94-foot-long blue whale model to the colossal Tyrannosaurus Rex display. Then there’s the massive 230,000-square-foot Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education and Innovation, which opened this past spring. It offers a 360-degree immersive experience, a butterfly vivarium and an insectarium and is an architectural marvel that all ages can appreciate. Beyond learning: While the crowds gather at Rockefeller Center to see the tree or travel to Times Square for a glimpse at this year’s ball, head over to Central Park, where you can iceskate at Wollman Rink. (Lasker Rink is closed for renovations.) Not far from the rink is the Central Park Zoo, which has winter hours from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. Information: amnh.org

Treat your body and soul at Sea Spa at Congress Hall in Cape May, a gem down the Jersey Shore. You’ll forget it’s winter here, where the facility shines with bright yellow walls and a coastal motif featuring framed vintage beachwear. For more R&R, sign up for one of the many spa experiences or pamper yourself with services such as facials, massages and manicures. Consider the 100-minute Ocean Memory Marine Ritual, which includes a full-body sea salt exfoliation and a soothing massage meant to replicate the motion of the ocean. Guys, don’t feel left out: Packages such as the Hot Towel Treatment and the Gentleman’s Facial are geared just for you! Beyond spas: You may not be thinking about a dip in the ocean this time of year, but winter is a perfect time to visit Washington Street Mall. Without the summertime crowd, you’ll be free to stroll and make the most of its 75 tempting eateries, bars, shops and boutiques. Information: caperesorts.com/congress-hall

Roll It Up

Holiday eating is about presentation as much as flavor. These meaty mains have you covered for both.

MUSHROOM, SPINACH AND OLIVE STUFFED BEEF TENDERLOIN Yields 8 servings INGREDIENTS n 1 beef tenderloin, trimmed and sliced or pounded flat n 1 small sweet onion, chopped n 1/2 cup chopped Kalamata olives, chopped n 1/2 bag baby spinach n 2 Tbs. butter n 1 cup mushrooms, chopped n olive oil n salt and pepper n cooking twine for wrapping up the tenderloin

DIRECTIONS Flatten the tenderloin. If you’re feeling adventurous you can do this yourself by butterflying the tenderloin lengthwise, then pounding it flat to around ¼ inch. Or, ask the butcher where you purchased the tenderloin—he/she will most likely do this step for you free of charge. In a deep skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and sauté the diced onion, season with salt and pepper and cook until slightly tender. Then add in the chopped mushrooms and cook until tender. Lower heat and add in the olives and spinach. Stir until the spinach has wilted and reduced. Remove from pan and allow it to cool to room temp. Note: Do not fill the tenderloin with hot filling; it could start to cook from the inside out. Lay the flattened tenderloin out and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Once the filling has cooled, place a layer of filling over the entire tenderloin. Starting at the short end and using both hands, tightly roll the meat into itself. Then, using cooking twine, tie the roll so it stays together while cooking. Bake at 270°F for about 1 hour or until the internal temperature reaches 125°F for medium-rare. Cover with foil and allow to rest at least 10 minutes prior to slicing. Serve with horseradish sauce or make a gravy out of the pan drippings.

“The addition of the olives in this recipe provides a briny, powerful dose of healthy fat. If you’re looking to make this dish lighter, you can ditch the butter for light cooking spray.”

CHICKEN CORDON BLEU Yields 4 servings INGREDIENTS For the chicken: n 4 chicken breasts n 8 slices Swiss cheese n 8 slices deli ham n 1 cup all-purpose flour n 2 large eggs, beaten n 2 cups panko breadcrumbs n kosher salt n black pepper, freshly ground n 4 Tbs. melted butter n 1 tsp.dried oregano For the sauce: n 4 Tbs. butter n 1/4 cup all-purpose flour n 2 cup milk n 2 Tbs. Dijon mustard n 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 400°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Place a chicken breast between two pieces of plastic wrap on a cutting board and flatten to a 1/4-inch thickness with a meat mallet or rolling pin. Top chicken with 2 slices of cheese, then 2 slices of ham. Starting at the top of the breast, roll up tightly and secure with toothpicks. Repeat with remaining chicken breasts. Place flour, eggs and panko in three shallow bowls. Season flour with salt and pepper. Add melted butter and oregano to panko and mix until incorporated. Working with one at a time, roll chicken first in flour, then eggs, then panko mixture, pressing to coat. Place on prepared baking sheet. Bake until golden and cooked through, 30 minutes. Meanwhile, make the sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add flour and stir until golden, 2 minutes. Slowly whisk in milk, then add mustard. Let simmer until thickened, 5 minutes. Add Parmesan and stir until melted. Season with salt and pepper. Remove toothpicks from chicken and serve with sauce.

“If you’re watching your cholesterol, dip the chicken in egg whites instead of whole eggs, use plant-based butter or ditch the butter used to cook the chicken altogether and use cooking spray instead. You can also sub-in gluten-free flour or breadcrumbs if you’re gluten intolerant.”

SPECIAL SECTION

MORRIS

COUNTY’S

TOP DOCTORS

2023 MORRIS COUNTY IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST PROMINENT AND SOUGHT-AFTER PHYSICIANS IN THE COUNTRY. To help you find the best of the best, across more than 48 specialties, Morris & Essex magazine commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of thousands of practicing and active physicians across the county. Doctors were asked to select peers whom they deem are the best within their practice areas and whom they would seek out for particular procedures. All the final honorees were factchecked with the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System. The highest vote getters within each specialty who are in good standing with the state are included here in the 2023 “Morris County’s Top Doctors” list. While not every outstanding area doctor is listed in the 2023 “Morris County Top Doctors” list, we think you will find it to be a valuable resource in the future for all your physician needs.

Jain Joseph, M.D. Summit Health Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery 150 Park Ave., 2nd Floor, Florham Park, NJ 07932 | 973.436.1379 | www.summithealth.com DR. JAIN JOSEPH JOINED THE SUMMIT HEALTH PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGICAL TEAM IN 2018 and is proud to be a part of this renowned group of specialists in the field. After completion of his medical training at Henry Ford Health System in Michigan, where he was Chief Fellow in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Joseph knew that his calling was much more than general cosmetic surgery. What he found most fulfilling was helping cancer patients move forward with a renewed vigor and healthy outlook on life. Dr Joseph was drawn to the very specialized field of reconstructive surgery for patients following cancer treatments. Although his particular focus is on breast reconstruction, Dr. Joseph also has expertise in body and facial reconstruction for skin and other types of cancers. As patients undergo the difficult stages of cancer treatment, Dr. Joseph hopes to restore and repair the changes to the body and contribute to the social, emotional and functional improvements of his patients. Using a keen

aesthetic eye and an individualized approach in the reconstructive surgical phase, Dr. Joseph is able to have his patients looking and feeling better than ever. He utilizes that same skill and approach in performing cosmetic surgery including breast augmentation and tummy tucks with the goal to restore patients’ youthful appearance and aid in their road to build confidence and improve self-esteem. As an in-network provider, the practice has a large patient outreach. Having the opportunity to help every patient that comes through his doorway during what is one of the toughest times in their lives, is at the heart of Dr. Joseph’s journey to becoming a doctor. Dr. Joseph is also an accomplished researcher and teacher and is affiliated with Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Hospital and ambulatory centers in both Florham Park and Berkeley Heights.

Premier Plastic Surgery Center of New Jersey 310 Madison Ave., Suite 100, Morristown NJ 07960 | 973.889.9300 | www.drbrianglatt.com The most fulfilling part of his work as a board-certified plastic surgeon, according to Dr. Brian Glatt, is helping patients achieve the positive changes they envision. The aesthetic outcome of surgery runs far deeper than the outer appearance and can significantly impact a person’s self-image and confidence. Dr. Glatt appreciates each person’s decision to entrust him as a partner in their surgical journey. Dr Glatt is honored to be named a Top Doctor here and has also been a 14 time NJ Monthly Top Doctor. He has been listed as a top plastic surgeon in Castle Connolly, New York Magazine, and most recently Newsweek – where Dr. Glatt was named as one of the top few hundred plastic surgeons in the country. His specialties include cosmetic surgery of the breast, body, and face. Dr. Glatt’s most requested procedures are abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and breast surgery, including augmentation with implants, lift, and reduction. He frequently performs abdominal and breast surgery together, (a “mommy makeover”) a procedure for which he is well known.

The group has seven offices, including a new office in Parsippany. The Livingston and Belleville locations are adjacent to the Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and Clara Maass Medical Center, respectively. The dedicated physicians offer services to women and their families from the start of pregnancy all the way through labor and delivery. It is a collaborative process between the team at NPJA and a patient’s regular obstetrician. Dr. Margaret Dziadosz says: “We make our patients feel confident that the specialists in this field know what’s going on and, on top of that, we make sure that they are comfortable and their doctor knows what is going on.”

TopDoctors_MSX_1223_V3.indd 48

The practice achieves these values through the implementation of clinical policy meetings. “It’s frustrating for patients to see multiple doctors and feel that each one says something different,” says Dr. Kathy Matthews. “We actually go over important things in our field and make sure that we are uniform with our patients.” Dr. Dom Terrone agrees, stating: “A patient shouldn’t have to communicate these updates to their doctor. That’s our job.” Dr. Leon Smith explains that he and his fellow colleagues see patients for three main scenarios: prenatal diagnosis, medical complications, and pregnancy-related complications. The diagnostic process utilizes ultrasounds, genetic screenings, and non-invasive testing to establish the health and possible conditions of an unborn fetus. The practice uses a Patient Portal for diabetic and hypertensive patients to regularly send their readings as well. “We do it to ensure the fetal well-being,” says Richard Miller. “Even if we are not seeing them this week, we know what’s going on with their condition.”

2023 ESSEX COUNTY IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST PROMINENT AND SOUGHT-AFTER PHYSICIANS IN THE COUNTRY. To help you find the best of the best, across more than 40 specialties, Morris & Essex magazine commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of thousands of practicing and active physicians across the county. Doctors were asked to select peers whom they deem are the best within their practice areas and whom they would seek out for particular procedures. All the final honorees were factchecked with the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System. The highest vote getters within each specialty who are in good standing with the state are included here in the 2023 “Essex County’s Top Doctors” list. While not every outstanding area doctor is listed in the 2023 “Essex County Top Doctors” list, we think you will find it to be a valuable resource in the future for all your physician needs.

Plastic Surgery Group

37 N. Fullerton Ave., Montclair, NJ 07042 | 973.506.2838 | www.plasticsurgerygroupnewjersey.com

I WANTED TO BE A DOCTOR TO HELP PEOPLE FEEL BETTER. I wanted to be a plastic surgeon so I could modify people’s faces and bodies, in ways big and small, not just to improve their looks, but to help them look on the outside, the way they feel on the inside. I remain a relatively unique entity in my medial specialty as there are about eight male plastic surgeons for every female plastic surgeon. Considering that 90% of our patients are women, I feel that I have a unique connection with, and insight into my patients, as well as a certain responsibility to them that I take very seriously. During these times of depersonalized healthcare, I want to get back to putting patients first, with less waiting time for appointments, by giving them my cell phone number and spending more time with them. There’s nothing better than doing what I always wanted to do. I consider it an honor and a privilege to serve my patients, and I never take for granted the ability to change people’s lives for the better.

A board-certified surgeon, Dr. Fuzesi specializes in breast care health including breast cancer surgery, benign breast disease, lactation and mastitis and preventative care for high-risk patients. As a member of Summit Health’s Breast Care Center, Dr. Fuzesi is part of a multidisciplinary team that guides patients from diagnosis through treatment and surgery using the most innovative approaches and comprehensive options in breast cancer care. During her training, Dr. Fuzesi was instrumental in research that reported on the patient’s experience throughout the different stages of breast cancer. In addition to improving the health of her patients, their satisfaction and peace of mind continue to be her top priorities She dedicates time to getting to know her patients and setting clear expectations through all stages of their treatment. Making sure they have a complete understanding of the many options available today and feeling in control of their health now and in the future is a critical component of Dr. Fuzesi’s work. She is proudly affiliated with Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and Morristown Medical Center.

“I began photographing my now-6-year-old son, Sam, at Hidden Pond Tree Farm in Mendham in the first year of the pandemic when there were no Santas in malls. We did it outside for safety reasons. I love shooting here—there are no distractions, and we shoot in October before it gets too cold. We hire this Santa for all my holiday shoots—last year he gave each of the kids a bell from one of his reindeer’s collars with a certificate of authenticity about which reindeer it came from. The kids loved it!”

ESSEX COUNTY’S

TOP DENTISTS

2023

At Advanced Endodontics patients receive the highest standard of professional care in a friendly, comfortable environment that uses the latest technology. DR. JOSEPH CHIKVASHVILI, AN ENDODONTIST, CREDITS HIS mentor, Dr. Noah Chivian, as one of the reasons HE HAS BEEN DEEMED A TOP DENTIST. He explains that the practice his mentors founded, and of which he is now the sole proprietor, is the oldest endodontic practice in the state. He is proud to have learned from pioneers in this specialty. He also credits his reliance on the latest technological advances, and ensuring that procedures are pain free, as reasons he has been cited. Dr. Chikvashvili was one of the first endodontists to use dental cone beam computed tomography in his practice. This x-ray equipment allows him to take 3-D images of a patient’s teeth, soft tissues, nerve pathways and bone in one scan. The practice is dedicated exclusively to saving teeth through endodontic care. Dr. Chikvashvili says root canal is usually the only treatment needed to save teeth with injured pulp tissue. However, some patients may require endodontic retreatment to correct a treated tooth that has not healed properly or surgery when root canal is not sufficient to save the tooth and alleviate pain. He also repairs cracked teeth and those damaged by traumatic injury. The dentist is not satisfied with merely practicing endodontics. Dr. Chikvashvili continues to be an authoritative leader in the specialty and has also added dental implant placement to his long list of credentials. He is Director of Endodontics at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and was past President of the New Jersey Association of Endodontists. He has also published articles in professional journals. “I’m very passionate about my specialty. I want to ensure that the highest standards are maintained for the next generation of endodontists.” His passion is rooted in his ability to help people who are in pain and to

educate patients about what caused it and how to prevent future occurrences. Dr. Chikvashvili admits that a large percentage of the procedures he performs is repairing the work of others. The practice enjoys patients’ word-of-mouth referrals. The dentist describes his staff as phenomenal. “They are caring and diligent.” This is a standard of care set by Dr. Chikvashvili, who personally checks on patients’ post-procedure recovery. “We follow patients until they’re perfect.” He is concerned about patient safety and comfort. The dentist notes, “I don’t cut corners and I don’t reuse instruments. I use new tools with each patient.” Dr. Chikvashvili earned his degree from the University of Maryland, College of Dental Surgery, where he was president of his senior class. After being named Chief Resident at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, where he completed general practice residency training, he worked in private practice for a year. He then completed post-graduate training in endodontics at Boston University, Goldman School of Dental Medicine, where he received a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study. The doctor also completed a two year continuing education course in Implantology at New York University.
