{ WELCOME LETTER }
One Year Later March marked one year since we admitted our first known COVID-19 patient at Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC). As we look back, it has been a year of unprecedented challenges, and our communities coalesced in an unprecedented way. In December, we began vaccinating our staff. Simultaneously, we partnered with Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. to be the exclusive healthcare provider responsible for coordinating vaccinators at the Livingston Mall location. Our vaccination programs provide us with the tools and resources to create a turning point so we can defeat this pandemic. We are no longer just treating patients with the virus, but together we have begun to prevent it. If you have not already received your vaccine, we encourage you to do so once you’re eligible at covidvaccine.nj.gov or rwjbh.org/covid19vaccine. While you’re at it, be sure to schedule all your preventive care appointments—we assure you that it is safe to return to the hospital. SBMC’s Northern Department of Cardiac Surgery includes highly sophisticated, cardiac surgeons who are experts in advanced cardiac surgery, heart failure, heart and lung transplantation and minimallyinvasive cardiac surgery who operate at the forefront of innovation. In this issue of Morris/Essex Health & Life, meet 69-year-old Paul Russo, who was diagnosed with a narrowing heart valve. Mr. Russo underwent the minimally-invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure and was discharged home within a few hours. On page 22, hear his story and hear from Sabino Torre, M.D., co-director of interventional cardiology, about how TAVR surgery has transformed the cardiac surgery landscape and continues to evolve. April is Donate Life Month, which encourages individuals to give the gift of life through organ and tissue donation. So, we also feature the story of Rosemarie Cristofolo, who was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) as a teenager and lived a mostly healthy life until her 40s, when she began needing dialysis. In 2018, she received a life-saving kidney transplant at SBMC. Read her inspirational story on page 24. Lastly, we introduce you on page 26 to David Kung, M.D., the new co-director of endovascular neurosurgery at RWJBarnabas Health. Dr. Kung’s practice is located at the Ambulatory Care Center on our Livingston campus, and he meets with patients suffering from brain tumors, back pain, neck pain, strokes, brain aneurysms and blood vessel abnormality affecting the brain and spine. Please enjoy our spring issue of the magazine. We hope it inspires you to get vaccinated—and to become an organ donor. You can sign up for the latter at registerme.org/saintbarnabas. We wish you good health,

Your Sanctuary, Indoors And Out How can you get excited about home, you may ask, when you’ve recently been “stuck” there for many months? The Home & Garden Issue you hold in your hands is our answer. That bit of the cosmos you control—your house and its surroundings— has been a special kind of refuge for the past year, but it’s always your sanctuary in a hustle-bustle world. In a way, our environments speak back to us. Your ability to craft yours to meet your needs isn’t just a chance for self-expression; it’s an affirmative embrace of your family’s daily life—self-esteem with a paintbrush. Home is where you can always go; let it be because you love the place. In that spirit, Morris/Essex Health & Life curated a collection of local home projects, each showcasing the owners’ personal identities and styles. For a Maplewood family that summers on Nantucket Island, adding New England charm and character to a master bedroom suite was the goal when they hired Julie Liepold of Millburn to redesign their space. Liepold nailed it, picking the right colors and furniture to capture the exact vibe the homeowners sought. See Liepold’s work in “From Nantucket With Love” on page TKTK. A Mendham couple had the perfect opportunity to make their newly built house their “home.” Though personalizing a blank space is typically easier than redoing existing work, sometimes a project needs a little help. The folks at Anthony Albert Studios in Bergen County stepped in for this assist, giving the couple and their family precisely what they wanted in the kitchen and master bedroom. Turn to “Masterful Mix” on page TKTK to see the entire project. Besides showcasing these wonderful spaces, this issue features other articles that can inspire you to create an area to fit your lifestyle. The home office ideas on page TKTK and the kitchen trends in Local Buzz, for instance, are chock full of tips to get you started. There’s our usual range of topics too. Did you know, for instance, that hemp is packed with protein and heart-friendly omega-3 fatty acids (page TKTK)? Or that a little splash of color can add a large amount of cheer and excitement to your spring wardrobe (page TKTK)? You’ll find all of that and more in this Home & Garden Issue; we invite you to flip its pages and see what catches your eye. Perhaps it will even inspire a fresh look at what you’ve supposedly been seeing constantly. Welcome home!

OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTIES.
WHAT’S HOT IN THE KITCHEN Before you tear down cabinets and put a sledgehammer to the wall, upgrading a kitchen takes plenty of thought and planning. Colors or neutrals? Traditional or smart appliances? Morris/Essex Health & Life asked Jenn Klaus, a marketing manager and showroom builder for the Northeast District of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, for some insider info on the latest in kitchen design. Experiment with color. White is still the it choice for kitchens, a number of homeowners are adding accent colors. “Many are going the two-tone route with their cabinets, often installing white upper cabinetry with colored bottom cabinetry,” Klaus says. “The most popular colors we are seeing right now are navy blue, hunter green and gray.” She adds that accent lights in bright colors or those with natural elements such as rattan or crystal are also trending. Smarter kitchens. Many vendors are syncing their appliances with smartphone apps, with ovens—which were used so often during the quarantine—leading the way. “And to extend the life of appliances, many manufacturers are including technology that alerts homeowners when it is time for routine maintenance or when there is a potential problem,” Klaus notes. “And some appliances can communicate directly with the manufacturer to help diagnose performance issues,” which can spare a costly visit from a repair person. Water…from above. Another growing trend that Klaus has noticed is a suspended faucet in lieu of countertop- or wall-mounted fixtures. “Why not free up some space and install a ceiling-mount faucet?” she says. “A suspended faucet can be adjusted to any preferred ceiling and hanging height. It’s a great option for those homeowners looking for a sleek, modern and smart kitchen faucet.” See it in person. While consumers may shop for items such as faucets online, Klaus warns customers to do all their homework or visit a showroom first. “Online shopping may be a good option for small items or to replace a similar item, but when purchasing large items online, such as an appliance or new bathtub, many consumers don’t purchase all of the additional parts needed to complete the installation,” she says. “This means they may not know what they are missing until it’s too late and, in the end, they spend more money and time correcting problems.”
KUDOS Best station in the nation: We’ve got the best pizza— turns out we have the top college radio station too. Montclair State University’s station, 90.3 WMSC, was named the country’s best college radio station for colleges with more than 10,000 students at the Annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Conference for collegiate broadcasters. MSU also took home the award for Best Use of Sound Effects. Skillful hands: Also scoring big in a national contest is Belle Schwartz, a crafter from Succasunna who’s been named one of the winners in Joann’s Fabrics Handmade Heroes competition. Schwartz used her knitting and sewing skills to help others during the pandemic, making and donating fabric face masks, mask extenders, pillowcases and knit hats for babies and preemies to local hospitals, first responders and soup kitchens. Help for the homeless: Finally, there’s Jenny DePaul, who in early March drove homeless folks in Newark to her “Kindness Closet” in Rockaway. The closet was a place for them to escape the cold and choose whatever garments they needed, along with sandwiches and nonperishable food items all donated and put together by volunteers. This is in affiliation with DePaul’s nonprofit, Project Kind. If you’d like to donate money, clothing, blankets, toiletries or packaged food, you can do so at projectkind123.org/how-to-help.

YOUR FIESTA AWAITS
CULINARY CORNER
Most Cinco de Mayo bashes were put on hold a year ago—something about a worldwide quarantine. But in 2021 we’re ready to safely enjoy the big fiesta on May 5. With many restaurants now reopened and following recommended guidelines, it’s time to celebrate with a margarita and a few tacos. These five Mexican eateries feature tasty food and drinks as well as that south-of-the-border holiday vibe;
DELHI FLAVOR In February, the owners of Delhi Accent in Ridgewood, a popular Indian restaurant in Bergen County, opened a sister spot in Montclair called Tamasha, offering what they call “modern Indian dining.” Online reviews already rave about the service, the atmosphere and the food. Soy burnt garlic cauliflower is a vegan favorite, and one look at the slow-braised lamb shank in onion-tomato sauce featured on its Instagram page (@tamashamontclair) will make you want to book a table. • Tamasha, 215 Glenridge Ave., Montclair, 973.250.6364; tamashanj.com
A TASTE OF NAWLINS Crave Cajun and creole food but can’t make it down to NOLA? This new West Orange seafood hot pot will hit the spot. The Boiling Palace specializes in authentic Southern comfort food and seafood such as fried soft-shell crab, hush puppies and shrimp sandwiches. It’s an eat-with-yourhands type of place (which adds to the authenticity of the experience), but it’s following all COVID precautions and has hand sanitizer, gloves and wet towelettes to keep things sanitary and safe. • The Boiling Palace, 288 Main St., West Orange, 973.736.7925; boilingpalacewo.com
GO KABOB-CRAZY! Iranians just celebrated Nowruz, the new year, on the first day of spring, but it’s never too late in the season for a good kabob. Halal restaurant Kabul Kabob & Gyro opened earlier this year in Parsippany; its menu is stocked with kabobs made of spiced lamb, beef, chicken or chapli and all the fixings, whether you prefer your meat in a gyro, on a rice platter or with a salad on the side. • Kabul Kabob & Gyro, 77 New Rd., Parsippany-Troy Hills, 973.227.0946; kabulkabobgyro.com
A BOOST FOR LOCAL BIZ As local restaurants felt the economic impact of the coronavirus, they also discovered people’s generosity. Local businesses such as Jack’s Café in Verona and Just Jake’s in Montclair were teetering financially during the height of the pandemic when they received aid from the Barstool Fund, the charitable arm of the pop-culture blog Barstool Sports, which has extended financial assistance to more than 300 businesses across the country since the coronavirus outbreak began. But sometimes it’s not just money that helps a business get back on its feet. Dave Portnoy, Barstool Sports’ founder and president, also recently reviewed slices at two popular pizza spots in our area—Reservoir Restaurant in South Orange and Calabria’s in Livingston—and the latter credited Portnoy and his favorable 8.9/10 review for keeping it afloat. “The week before Dave’s visit, we weren’t sure if we could make ends meet,” Calabria owner Gabriella Ottaiano told Fox News. “Since his review, we were able to catch up on all of our bills and save my family’s business.”
FAREWELL TO A RULE? The state is considering an official end to a long-time requirement for how a customer must consume alcohol at a brewery or distillery. No, the legal drinking age isn’t changing. Instead, the state Senate and Assembly will decide on a bill that would eliminate the need for an individual to tour a brewery or distillery before he or she drinks on site. “Requiring customers to take a tour every time they frequent their favorite brewery is very redundant,” says state Assemblywoman Pam Lampitt. Unnecessarily repetitive and a turnoff, according to some locals. Don’t we have better things to do these days than listen to the same spiel over and over? State legislators have been discussing similar bills for years but have never passed a decisive one. A potential vote, however, has gained traction in recent months as a result of the impact of the coronavirus.

PUPPY LOVE Dog: Skylie, 6-anda-half-year-old miniature Australian Labradoodle Owner: Lauren Huston of Harding Township This little gal is a canine star—her 93,000-plus Instagram followers prove it. Skylie’s owner lauds the “good-natured, fun-loving” pup she got from a breeder in South Carolina— and her happy-go-lucky disposition. The mini-Australian Labradoodle loves the great outdoors, whether she’s hiking in the woods, fetching a ball in her yard or racing up and down the Jersey Shore beaches. In fact, Skylie can’t seem to be photographed without making it an action shot—it’s often difficult to get a clear photo for the ’Gram. “She is a mover and a shaker!” Huston says. As for her diet, Skylie is a carnivore through and through who loves a good burger or a prosciutto/ mozzarella roll-up. “Just don’t try to feed her fluff food like french fries or a burger bun,” says Huston. “She always passes on empty carbs.” To see Skylie’s daily adventures (and smiles!), check her out on Instagram @skyliedoodle.

A WARM WELCOME
David K. Kung, M.D., joins RWJBarnabas Health as the new codirector of endovascular neurosurgery. Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) is proud to announce the addition of David K. Kung, M.D., to RWJBarnabas Health. Dr. Kung is a cerebral vascular, endovascular and general neurosurgeon who, in February 2021, was appointed as the new co-director of endovascular neurosurgery across the hospital system. And Dr. Kung is thrilled to join the team. “A lot of great work has already been done here, but there is a lot of opportunity to grow and build,” says Dr. Kung on joining SBMC. “The benefits of endovascular technique for stroke has been proven since 2015, but the execution still requires optimization, so there is plenty of opportunity for research in the field of neurosurgery and for providing more optimal care for patients in New Jersey.” Dr. Kung’s subspecialty is vascular neurosurgery, in which he treats patients with “strokes, brain aneurysms and blood vessel abnormality affecting the brain and spine such as carotid artery stenosis and arteriovenous fistula [an abnormal connection of the arteries and the veins],” he says. “The other key diseases that I treat include brain tumor, back pain and neck pain.” Dr. Kung’s office is based at the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) on the Livingston campus. In addition to meeting with patients and performing surgical procedures there, Dr. Kung also collaborates with the stroke neurology team at SBMC. “Modern stroke care requires coordination with emergency medical services, neurologists and other physicians, physical and speech therapies, rehab specialists, social workers, etc.,” says Dr. Kung. “For the best care, we need to get patients to the right places at the right time.” Before arriving at SBMC, Dr. Kung worked at Penn Medicine for six years as a physician and as the neurosurgical director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He has recent ties to SBMC through his wife, Kristen Yoo, D.O., who completed her neurosurgery residency at SBMC. Additionally, their son was born at SBMC while Dr. Yoo was a resident. “As the population ages, stroke or vascular disease in the brain is going to become more prevalent,” Dr. Kung concludes. “Right now, it’s the fifth-leading cause of death, so my main focus is to optimize treatment and modernize those efforts.”
“Modern stroke care requires coordination with emergency medical services, neurologists and other physicians, physical and speech therapies, rehab specialists and social workers. For the best care, we need to get patients to the right places at the right time.”

“Fresh and invigorating” is how designer Anthony Passanante of Anthony Albert Designs in Waldwick describes this Mendham kitchen. “With so many mixed materials,” he says, “your eyes wander, almost like it’s art.” MSXHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

They knew what they liked, this couple with three young children. And building a new home from scratch, like the one they were building in Mendham, means you pretty much get what you want, from the layouts down to the doorknobs. But sometimes the very grandeur of one’s vision calls out for a designer’s eye to help fulfill it. Thus Anthony Albert Passanante of Waldwick-based Anthony Albert Studios was hired before construction officially began. In conjunction with Nick Cusano from Cusano Associates Architects, Mendham, Passanante designed the kitchen and master bathroom, taking as a given the fact that this was, as he says, “not your average house. One side of the house’s exterior looks like a rustic barn and the other is more modern.” He wanted to echo that eclectic spirit inside, but that meant playing a high-stakes game. Combine disparate materials and elements wisely and you create a stunner; do it clumsily and you’ve got visual noise. Passanante and Cusano got it right—in a collaboration of creative minds that was also a combination of aesthetic approaches. Mixed materials abound in the kitchen especially, where a wooden piece the client spotted in the designer’s studio inspired customdesigned hollow beams above the island that were designed by Passanante and made by contractor Mike Savercool’s mill. The brass hood over the stove was constructed by a local artisan and then antiqued, and the rustic-chic vibe translates as well in the custom rolling pantry door. Another highlight is the storage section next to it that’s framed with a mirror and glass shelving. “I love a mirror in the kitchen,” says the designer. “It’s unexpected, and you get reflection back from the exterior.” Meanwhile, the off-white quartzite countertops from Dente Trading and custom Anthony Albert Studio cabinets, coupled with brass hardware from Hardware The butler’s pantry and the kitchen clearly belong together but aren’t too matchy-matchy. They share a color palette, homey elements and brass hardware, but the countertops, for example, are made of quartzite in the kitchen and granite in the butler’s pantry. Both are from Dente Trading in Cedar Grove.

Designs, keep things fresh and modern. The adjacent, two-sided butler’s pantry is an extension of the main kitchen but with a style all its own. Passanante dropped the ceiling over the cabinets and raised it in the middle to incorporate the rustic beams; the blue-gray cabinets, also custom, match the island; and the antique brass pendant light coordinates with the rest of the hardware. There’s plenty of storage in here, including a wine fridge, glass cabinets to house servingware and open walnut shelving for liquor bottles and display pieces. In fact, storage was a must for this busy family of five. A few hidden organizational gems include a cabinet with a rollout shelf that holds the kids’ water bottles to make life easier ahead of their sports games. There is also a refrigerator that cools their beverages so that they can grab and go. Walk upstairs and you’ll see that the construction here isn’t run-of-the-mill either—the master suite has its own wing, separate from the five remaining bedrooms. So the master bathroom, one of eight in the home, needed to have that wow factor too. “Rather than your typical shower pushed off to the corner, we wanted it to be the focal point of the room,” Passanante says, explaining the design
decisions he and Cusano made. That meant making it oversized and installing his-and-hers faucets from California Faucet Company so that each party could control water temperature and pressure separately. The white-and-gray tiles from Westfield Tile resemble a waterfall. For visual effect, his-and-hers vanities made of Calacatta marble were purposely not positioned next to each other. Instead, they’re on opposite walls. “This way, if you’re standing at one vanity and looking in the mirror, you get all these reflections back,” Passanante says. In between is the spacious Victoria + Albert tub, which is situated under a large window that looks out to the woodsy backyard. The bluish-gray custom cabinets were a meticulous choice here just as they were in the kitchen, as they “contrast against the tile and add visual interest,” he says. This project was completed just before the pandemic began, about a year and a half after initial work started. “This kitchen is truly the hub of the home,” says Passanante. “It’s definitely the clients’ favorite part—it’s pretty much where they live.” Yes, but who’d deny that its boldness finds a kindred spirit in the master bath upstairs?

This shower is large enough for two and was intended to be the focal point of the show-stopping master bathroom. The glass shower door reflects light from the Schonbek chandelier, as do the vanities on opposite walls—and the tub that presides between them.

{ DESIGNERS’ TIPS }
MAKE WORK-AT-HOME WORK Your home office should be a place that fosters creativity— and streamlines your 9-5 routine. The pandemic won’t last forever, but it’s hard to see home offices going away. Working from home, at least sometimes, is too convenient an option for many of us (and for employers who prefer not to invest in office suites). We all live a good portion of our lives online now, and that will still be true even when theaters are filled again and the daily commute resumes. The upshot? You’ll probably go on needing a setup at home for business—even if it’s only the business of being you. That’s a challenge if you’ve been making do with temporary this and jerry-rigged that in lieu of a real home work space. But a home office can be efficient, attractive and conducive to getting things done without eating your house alive. To prove the point, here’s some advice for five home-office scenarios from members of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.

{ DESIGNERS’ { HOME OFFICE TIPS} }
Clockwise from left: Designer Sharon Sherman separates a work area from the rest of the room using a rug, chair and table to demarcate the transition zone; designer Susan Barbieri says a desk built into a closet can be concealed when not in use; a C-shaped table can easily slide under a desk or sofa.
A bedroom in disguise? To maximize productivity in an office-bedroom setup, it’s essential to separate your work environment from personal space. Susan Barbieri of Susan Barbieri Interior Design in Hawthorne suggests a freestanding bookshelf, which can double as a room divider, or a foldaway Murphy bed. “When put away, it makes the work area seem like a dedicated space rather than a combined one,” she says. Sharon L. Sherman of Wyckoff-based Thyme & Place Design advises regular video conference participants to consider their backgrounds. “A virtual background is one option,” she says. “Otherwise, you’ll need to set up an actual background that doesn’t show the bed. A cozy corner with good lighting, books, wall hangings or plants behind you projects an air of calm and professionalism.” Share and share alike. If other family members are also working (or learning) remotely, each person should have his or her own space. No, setting up cubicles isn’t necessary—simply ensure that everyone has a comfortable chair and a portion of the room designated for his or her own computer and work area. Sandra Lambert of Realm Designs in Middlesex also advises minimizing noise, a major cause of distraction. Positioning desks
so that they face a wall or away from each other or installing a white noise machine to mask keyboard clicking and paper shuffling can help, she says. Headsets are another solution, according to Pat Valentine Ziv of PVZ Design in Mountainside, because “they provide a quieter way to communicate with others while not disturbing your office-mate.” No desk? While working on a desk is ideal, keep in mind any flat surface can do the trick, counsels Judy L. Miller, who runs an eponymous design firm in Fair Lawn. A folding table or a vanity can easily double as a work surface, she says, adding: “Above all, you need a comfortable place to sit, so consider the ergonomics of the chair you choose.” Joan Ravasy of Joan Ravasy Design in Lebanon says wall-mounted shelves tucked into corners, hallways, landings and foyers are her “go-to” when creating a dedicated area. Meanwhile, Terri Fiori of Wyckoffbased Fiori Interior Design recommends C-shaped end tables because they can slide easily under a chair or a bed. “Some of them serve a dual purpose, with a shelf feature or a flip-top extension,” she adds. Space is tight. When your computer and files take up all the surface area, it’s time to get creative. “In any small space, I always look

to vertical solutions,” says Cozette Brown of Cozette Brown Interior Design in Ringwood. “Tall chests, bookcases, even an old armoire can all be repurposed for office use.” Lambert recommends installing cabinets and shelving below work surfaces. “Don’t forget about the backs of doors,” she says. “They can have hooks, folder holders or tack boards.” Keeping order is “critical” in a small office, Ravasy adds. She suggests putting work items in stacked boxes or in a small shelf unit with labeled bins and covered containers to be pulled out when necessary. These tools “allow you to put your work away at the end of the day,” Ravasy says. Work in style. Because the home office is part of your home, be sure it fits in with the style of the house. “The most efficient way to make a home office both functional and sophisticated is by utilizing built-ins,” says designer Alma Russo of AR Interiors in Morganville. Creating built-ins for her clients allows them to address all their needs in the space, “whether it be file cabinets, hidden printers or any other user-specific storage.” And don’t settle for sterile white walls— that’s for the actual office. “Add elements such as strong saturated color and wallpaper to enhance any work-from-home space,” Russo advises.

Wainscot Media publishes several special sections throughout the year in our regional magazines. Contact us today to learn more about freelance positions available. What is a Periodontist? A periodontist is a specialist in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases that affect gums and supporting bones of the teeth. Your general dentist may refer you to a periodontist if it’s determined further specialized treatment is needed when disease is present. In addition, periodontists specialize in the surgical placement of dental implants when teeth are lost due to gum disease or other tooth traumas. A highly-trained periodontist can correct a gummy smile, gum recession or other non-disease complications with surgical and non-surgical techniques. Working closely with general dentists and other dental specialists, my team and I are dedicated to improving the overall health and aesthetics of every patient’s beautiful smile.
Can my teeth be saved if my gums are damaged?

Depending on the severity and progression of a person’s periodontal condition, multiple treatment options are available to restore your natural teeth, supporting soft tissue and bone back to health. Bleeding gums, periodontal pockets, bone loss and loose teeth caused by gum disease may be fully treatable with non-surgical or surgical treatments. Our office offers a more effective method of treating gum disease using LANAP laser surgical technique. A high-energy thin laser fiber is inserted into the periodontal pockets killing bad bacteria and eliminating diseased tissue in a less invasive manner. Two weeks after surgery, our patients are very pleased when their gums have returned to a healthy pink and perio pocketing has substantially decreased. If full-mouth restoration is necessary, we offer the option of staged implant restorations (one at a time). Whether we’re able to keep your natural teeth using our state-of-the-art surgical techniques or replace hopeless teeth with dental implants or a full-mouth restoration, we’ll work with you to provide the best options possible.

The short answer is yes! Ninety-nine percent of the time a skillful surgeon is able to regenerate lost bone that’s strong enough for the placement and support of a dental implant. In the upper back teeth area, the sinus floor may prohibit the placement of a dental implant unless bone is first regenerated or grafted into the sinus floor. This procedure, sinus grafting or sinus lift, allows for an implant to be surgically placed into the grafted area after several months of healing time has accrued.

No need to leave vacation behind. A Maplewood couple surrenders each day’s worries to the serenity of an island sunset.
FROM NANTUCKET WITH LOVE
{ ROOM REDESIGN }
Hours of travel separate a Maplewood family’s home from their beloved summer haunt on Nantucket Island. Yet each night in their master bedroom suite, Kit and her husband recapture the sense of calm associated with the sunsets they enjoy there. “Nantucket has always been an inspiration,” says Kit, who loves to spend summers at her parents’ home on that island off Cape Cod—with her own family, including four children in high school and college. “The sunsets are beautiful,” she explains. “You get a pink sky with oranges and purple.” When they hired Julie Liepold of Liepold Design Group in Millburn to redesign the master bedroom suite of their 1907 Roosevelt Estate home in Maplewood, they brought just enough of that island aesthetic to the mainland. Nantucket influences abound, from the mermaid collection to the paintings Kit found at auction. The sanctuary centers on a custom Vanguard king bed with tufted headboard in Romo fabric accented with an Artisan Mica mirror. Because symmetry contributes to a sense of peace, the bed is balanced between two Vanguard tables topped with twin Circa Lighting crystal lamps. An Eastern Accents duvet in marble print and embroidered pillows complete the look. Some might have turned to blue for an ocean vibe, but this homeowner took the road less traveled. “Blush pink is the perfect calming color scheme that relates to the MSXHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

coastal landscape of the setting sun and evokes soothing feelings of peace and comfort,” says Liepold. A blush-colored scarf with a map of the island, now framed as wall art, inspired the color story for both the bedroom and the dressing room, with its églomiséaccented vanity of white oak from Hooker Furniture. The dressing room is a suitable setting for Kit’s seashell and driftwood mermaids, and the coastal theme is reinforced by the Maxim Ripple Collection ceiling light—it creates the effect of rippled water. “The idea was to have a getaway within their residence in Maplewood,” says Liepold, who completed the project in September 2020. Early on, both Kit and Liepold realized that beachy décor, if not done right, could be a design pitfall. The fix? Let monochromatic hues in the blush-colored grasscloth walls by Phillip Jeffries and multi-layered lighting set the stage for the room’s biggest punch: paintings by Nantucket artists. Another nod to symmetry, the set of Vanguard Colette chairs upholstered in Zimmer & Rohde fabric creates one of Kit’s favorite spots. They are nestled around a Gabby Home Marigold side table. “I love sitting on these chairs and putting my feet up on the ottoman and just relaxing,” says Kit. And—even if you’re not literally on vacation—isn’t that what that “vacation” vibe is all about?

Clockwise from top right: It’s no coincidence that the Vanguard bedside tables have diamond patterns in their brass hardware and wood grain— this is a theme repeated throughout. Blush tones, symmetry and romantic layered lighting accentuate the calm in this bedroom retreat. The dressing room, tucked away to the side, has an embroidered window treatment with Kravet fabric for a water-like reflection. Satisfying the desire for a neat, clean space, the oak-veneer-finish vanity boasts several clever storage containers alongside a bouquet of roses and a Global Views stacked gemstone table lamp. Dressed up in reverse painted glass next to the mirror in rose quartz, these boxes have a job to do. Ditto for the JM Piers mercury glass vanity storage tray (center on vanity). Lumbar pillows with Jane Churchill Halcyon Pink fabric make the Colette chairs even more comfortable.

LET THERE BE LIGHT
Sure, lighting sets the mood, but a distinctive fixture can make a statement of its own. We offer you some illuminating advice. We often rely on themes, color choices or an accent piece to create visual impact in our home décor. (“Where’d you find that?”) But we may overlook one of the most important design elements: light fixtures. The light they provide, of course, can show off everything, establish the prevailing mood, even create illusions that “transform” a room’s size and shape. But the design of the fixture itself can add cohesion, drama, aesthetic richness or an element of delightful surprise—and this is a choice you don’t want to get wrong. Read on, as we shed some light on five beguiling rooms and the key roles light fixtures play in them.
GREAT ROOM Carry a room’s color scheme above eye level with a ceilingmounted light fixture that will add to the décor, not dominate it. The color of the light fixture on the opposite page creates a bold statement yet matches beautifully with the other neutral elements in the room such as the artwork, lamp shade and area rug. It’s also scaled properly for the room, creating an understated impact.

KITCHEN Though light fixtures should reflect a room’s theme, making them stand out a bit isn’t a bad thing. Here, the use of the oversized, opaque white globes makes this postmodern fixture eye-catching, as the orbs play boldly against the cabinets’ squares and rectangles. Meanwhile, the contemporary look of metals is a go-to style choice for many kitchens, as it is here—the gold finish on the fixture pairs with the silver tones in the kitchen and on the dining chairs.

DINING ROOM Chandeliers should be interesting— and exude elegance. Sometimes simplicity is the way to go. Here, this chandelier mimics a work of art yet does not compete with any of the other pieces in the room. In fact, its white color pulls out the white in the art, while the fixture itself adds texture and interest to the space.

SITTING ROOM Forgo floor and tabletop lamps and give smaller rooms an arresting fixture for a retro yet modern vibe. The clear glass multi-drop light fixture here brings dimension to this sitting area, while the not-soperfect wavy cords that drop from the ceiling soften the rigid lines seen throughout the space.

BEDROOM Besides using the same color scheme, echoing a room’s architecture can accentuate its overall design. This chandelier mimics the design on the crown molding, yet in a much more contemporary way. And size matters—the light should always be suitable for the space: The scale of this light fixture makes for a dramatic piece and highlights the tall ceiling.

MORRIS
2021 MORRIS COUNTY IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST SEASONED AND TALENTED REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS IN THE COUNTRY. To help readers find the best agents to work with, Morris/Essex Health & Life contracted DataJoe Research of Boulder, Colorado to facilitate a multi-faceted research campaign. It consisted of an online survey delivered directly to agents across Morris County via email as well as internet research. In the survey, real estate agents were asked to provide sales volume ranges and also nominate their peers. In the internet campaign, DataJoe consulted a variety of websites to build richer knowledge of individual licensed real estate agents across the county. DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at the time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If they were not able to find evidence of a real estate agent’s current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that real estate agent was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied results to Morris/Essex Health & Life for final review. We recognize that there are many good real estate agents who are not shown on the representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the county.

best results.” Christine has stayed with one office throughout her career. She attributes that decision to the great Coccia Real Estate environment between the other realtors, staff and Christopher Coccia, the broker of the office. “I love what I do, whether it’s a first time buyer finding their new home, or a seller who needs more space or is downsizing to a smaller home. SPECIAL SECTION
ESSEX
2021 TO HELP READERS FIND THE BEST REAL ESTATE AGENTS TO WORK WITH IN ESSEX COUNTY, Morris/Essex Health & Life contracted DataJoe Research of Boulder, Colorado to facilitate a multi-faceted research campaign. It consisted of an online survey delivered directly to agents across Essex County via email as well as internet research.

{ POWER FOOD }
Hemp Makes A Comeback Foods derived from this ancient crop, rich with health benefits, are enjoying a new surge of popularity.
Can you guess what once disreputable plant has floated onto America’s mainstream culinary scene? It’s cannabis sativa, source of the drugs marijuana and hashish. The plant also produces hemp, which is used for both fiber and food. Hemp is far from new—its history goes back 10,000 years, making it one of civilization’s oldest cultivated crops; farmers grew it in our nation’s earliest days. But the cannabis plant’s use for illegal substances caused the federal government to ban its cultivation in 1970. That prescription was reversed with the 2018 farm bill, which made it legal to cultivate plants that contained no more than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound in marijuana that creates an inebriating effect. Since then, hemp food products, as well as items with the hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) oil, have become available at most major supermarkets. Even New Jersey native Martha Stewart has embraced the trend, introducing CBD-infused gummy bears and other products made with 100 percent U.S.-grown hemp to her eponymous line last fall. So no, eating hemp—or CBD products—won’t get you stoned or even lead to a positive drug test, but experts are high on this ancient plant’s many health benefits. POWER UP Like most nuts and seeds, hemp seeds are rich in protein and healthy fats. One ounce, or a little less than three tablespoons, of shelled hemp seeds (also
system and muscles. It also contains 3.2 milligrams of zinc (21 percent DV), also needed for immune health, and 2.7 milligrams of blood-building iron (or 15 percent DV). CBD oil, which has likewise been gaining popularity, is being studied as a treatment for varied conditions ranging from anxiety to post-traumatic stress disorder, and is widely considered an antioxidant.
called hemp hearts) contains about 160 calories, roughly the same as an ounce of peanut butter. Those few spoonfuls bring 10 grams of protein and 12.6 grams of fat. Most of the fat is polyunsaturated, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, both of which are beneficial to cardiac health and, according to the American Heart Association, can lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. That three-tablespoon serving of hemp hearts has about a gram of fiber, but if you want to boost those digestive benefits, eat a similar-sized serving of seeds with the shells intact for a whopping nine grams of fiber. Hemp seeds are also rich in minerals. A serving will deliver 179 milligrams (or 45 percent of the daily recommended amount) of magnesium, which supports the body’s nervous system, immune
BUY/STORE/SERVE Hemp is sold as full seeds, hulled hearts, protein powder, a dairy milk alternative and a cold-pressed oil. The unshelled seeds are best when toasted and go well on salads or in soups. The hearts, which look a bit like couscous and have a subtle nutty flavor, go well over yogurt or mixed with granola, cereal or oatmeal. Martha Stewart suggests coating a peeled banana with a nut butter of your choice and rolling it in hemp hearts for a proteinpacked, sweet snack. The milk and protein powder both add a health boost to a fruit or veggie smoothie. The oil retains its nutrients best when not heated, so it’s not ideal for cooking if you are hoping to reap the full benefits. Instead, drizzle it over greens for a hearthealthy salad dressing. Note: If you are hoping to grow your own hemp, it’s still not legal in New Jersey without a license. Hemp seeds, however, have a long shelf life, staying fresh for several months in a dry pantry or up to a year in the fridge. —Liz Donovan
DID YOU KNOW? You’re likely carrying pictures of hemp farmers in your purse or pocket—that is, if you have a quarter (George Washington) or a nickel (Thomas Jefferson). MSXHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

“We were outside during that week of gorgeous weather in March and my 8-year-old daughter Jade wanted to play on my husband’s skateboard. The light was so pretty, so naturally I had to grab my camera to document it. I edited in a rainbow to give a nod to the start of the pandemic when we were all sharing rainbows. This photo represents joy and hope. This has been a very stressful year for everyone, but seeing Jade’s joy here makes me realize that even though these kids’ lives were basically torn apart, they are going to be OK.” — Dawn Pecorella Curto, Morristown
