Vaccination against COVID-19 is now widely available. It is the best way to protect ourselves from the virus and will enable our families to get back together. Throughout the pandemic, many people fell behind with their annual preventive health screenings. The multidisciplinary team at Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) urges everyone to schedule an annual physical with a primary care physician. Preventive screenings, such as those for breast, colon, prostate and cervical cancer, are imperative to overall well-being. Take Tanya Galayda, an example of why gynecologic screening is so important. The 33-year-old is now healthy and thriving after undergoing a hysterectomy, radiation and chemotherapy last year as a result of her advanced-stage, HPV-induced cervical cancer. Not only is she cancer free, but Galayda froze her eggs before beginning cancer treatment and she and her husband, Nick, are currently pursuing surrogacy to start their family. Read her inspiring story (and hear from her gynecologic cancer team at SBMC) on page 30. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Pink Crusade, an annual fundraiser to educate women across New Jersey about the importance of breast health, is scheduled this year for Sept. 22 and planning is underway. Learn more about Pink Crusade’s mission on page 32 and how you can join local organizations, survivors and breast cancer activists in supporting this important cause. In addition to preventive care, exercise is equally important to our health, and having an exceptional team of orthopedists at SBMC for any sports-related injury is essential. On page 33, two board-certified and fellowship-trained sports medicine physicians at RWJBarnabas Health discuss rotator cuff and other common orthopedic injuries, some of which present in young athletes and others due to degeneration of the muscles and tendons as we age. Enjoy the last few weeks of the summer, and know you can always rely on SBMC for your medical care.

{ EDITOR’S NOTE }
Giving You the Very Best
As the new normal continues to unfold, we’re grateful that so many things have returned to the “normal” we once knew. Our favorite restaurants are seating customers at full capacity, movie theaters are screening feature films, grocery store aisles are open to two-way “traffic.” Though they’re small comforts in the grand scheme of things, these and so many daily activities we took for granted over the past year and half are indeed that: comforting. We’re hopeful that the business owners and professionals who took a hit during the pandemic, whether it was a financial or a personnel hit, continue to bounce back. They are familiar faces in our daily routines, and we’re eager to continue giving them our support. And many of you already have!
Once again this year, Morris/Essex Health & Life gave readers the opportunity to show their appreciation for their favorite businesses with our annual “Best of Monmouth” poll. Our online ballots allowed you to vote for your choice of the top bagel shop, pizza parlor, menswear store, barber shop, interior design service—and much more. Perhaps casting these ballots was one of the comforts you were excited about, as we were once again impressed by the total participation in this year’s poll. We know you can’t wait, so flip to page 35 and see all of the winners in “Best of Morris & Essex 2021.” Congratulations to all, and thank you to everyone who submitted a ballot. In celebration of our counties’ best, we are also proud to spotlight the area’s healthcare leader, Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC). As we do in every issue, Morris/ Essex Health & Life showcases the latest news from SBMC in the “In Good Health” section. This month, one of the stories you’ll read focuses on the hospital’s breast cancer awareness efforts, specifically the upcoming Pink Crusade campaign. Read all about it in “Pretty In Pink” on page 32. September, of course, is back-to-school time for many kids, and we want to show parents some of the best ideas to help young ones return to class. Check out some of the season’s coolest backpacks on page 22 and five fashionable looks to cater to your kid’s personality on page 48. For little ones who are just starting the learn, the toys on page 24 are designed to provide hours of fun—and can teach tots a thing or two. We hope you enjoy this edition featuring Monmouth’s best as much as we enjoyed putting it together. And we hope seeing and supporting some of your favorites—as well as supporting the “new kids on the block”— brings you closer to the old normal.

ICE IS NICE OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTIES.
LAST LICKS
Ah, there’s nothing like a waffle cone with two scoops of your favorite ice cream and toppings on a 90-degree summer day—unless you’re vegan, lactoseintolerant or otherwise can’t enjoy the milky summer treat. But there’s still time left this summer to savor a cone or cup even if you can’t (or don’t) consume milk products. These four local shops offer nondairy ice-cream alternatives: Beenie’s Ice Cream, Morristown. The guys at Beenie’s have a freezer dedicated exclusively to vegan ice cream and sorbet, which are each made with oat or coconut milk. Current flavors include chocolate, mint chip, s’mores and cookie monster (yes, it’s blue), as well as raspberry, mango and “Shirley Temple” sorbet.
• 100 Rte. 46, Budd Lake, 862.258.3593, dascreamery.com
Last Licks, East Hanover. You may be overwhelmed by the Italian ice flavor options—13, to be exact—at this spot, but isn’t that a good thing? Distinctive Italian ice flavors here include sour apple, root beer, cotton candy and coconut. • 134 Ridgedale Ave., East Hanover, 973.585.7988; lastlicksicecream.com
• 38 Morris St., Morristown, 862.260.9221; beeniesicecream.com
Denville Dairy, Denville. The vegan selection here is more limited than at other stores, but the standout vegan flavors—cherry vanilla and Oreo—speak for themselves. Customers can buy each for curbside pickup in individual cups or a sixpack. • 34A Broadway, Denville, 973.627.4214; denvilledairy.com
Guerriero Gelato, Caldwell & Montclair. Owner Mike Guerriero knows vegan ice cream—in fact, he took the No. 1 spot at Gelato Festival America for his vegan blueberry basil flavor, made with lemon, basil and—duh— blueberries. You can also try his signature OatCreme ice cream in a cake, smoothie or Dole Whip. • 194 Bloomfield Ave., Caldwell, 973.403.9969; 571 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair, 973.509.1607; scoops2go.com
Salaam Ice Cream Parlor, Newark. Lines around the block are the norm at this Blackowned business, which has half a dozen vegan flavors: chocolate and vanilla, of course, plus coconut, sea salt caramel chocolate and mint chip galactica. • 1024 Bergen St., Newark, 732.798.4383, salaamicecream parlor.business.site

These three Morris and Essex county ice cream stores have plenty of options for those hunger pangs, but all eyes are on their Italian ices: Das’ Creamery, Budd Lake. Das right—this spot in Morris County has a handful of dairy-free Italian ice flavors mixed with oat or coconut milk and flavored with plant-based ingredients such as fruits, vegetables, herbs and extracts. Options include rainbow Italian ice, watermelon Italian ice and Swedish Fish Italian ice, which “tastes just like your favorite gummy fishy candy.”
The Towne Scoop, Verona. Hard-dipped cones are the specialty at this momand-pop shop, but Italian ice is a must-have too— flavors include cherry, lemon and American (which gets its name from the cherry, lemon and raspberry/red white and blue combo). • 542B Bloomfield Ave., Verona, 973.877.2667; thetownescoop.com
HE’S A POOCH WITH A PURPOSE The kids at The Phoenix Center in Nutley often face challenges doing things the rest of us take for granted. So don’t envy them too much just because they have Fynn. Fynn is a 2-year-old yellow English Lab who’s become more than a mascot for the accredited nonprofit private school for special-needs individuals ages 5–21. The dog’s cute face and lovable personality can turn an otherwise stressful physical or verbal therapy session into something approaching fun. When students are working on pushing and pulling skills, Fynn perches on a skateboard and lets them use him as the weight they push or pull. Fynn is at once a calming influence and an inspiration. Students working on communication skills give him commands— and their confidence gets a boost when he complies. “The children light up when they interact with him,” says Fynn’s owner, occupational therapist Lauren Martini. “And because he’s completely nonthreatening and nonjudgmental and has zero expectations of the children, they communicate with him on their own terms, which opens the door for them to more easily communicate with other people.”

WHAT’S THE TEA ON BUBBLE TEA? Bubble tea, also called boba, is a Taiwanese drink made of black tea, milk, ice and chewy tapioca balls the size of marbles. Though boba should not be consumed daily like coffee due to its high caloric content (not to mention its lack of protein and fiber), it’s a nice summer pick-me-up once in a while when you need a refreshing beverage and/or a yummy burst of caffeine. Bubbleology, a U.K.based chain for bubble tea and bubble waffles, will soon open a new outpost in Newark. Meanwhile, try these bubble tea spots in our counties: Aloha Bubble, Madison. Besides black pearl boba, the classic boba for bubble tea, this spot offers “bursting boba” which is filled with juice and pops in your mouth. Flavors include strawberry, mango, kiwi and yogurt. Another fan favorite here is Aolani coffee, made with milk, coffee foam and black pearl boba. P.S. Follow the place on Instagram @alohabubble22 for specials and sneak peeks. • 22 Main St., Madison, 973.204.3800 Bubble in Paradise, Denville. You’ll find all your traditional milk and fruit tea offerings here, as well as bubbles and jellies and acai bowls with customizable toppings. Bubble in Paradise also has BYO smoothies and paradise smoothies. Avoiding caffeine? Most drinks can be made with water instead of tea, and nondairy milk options abound too: almond, coconut, oat or soy. • 38 Broadway, Denville, 973.957.0263; bubbleinparadisenj.com
Gong Cha, Montclair and Mllburn. Gong Cha is a chain known across the Garden State that sells only bubble tea. The “series” from which to choose are milk foam, milk tea, slush, tea latte and “the creative series,” which features inventive beverages such as lemon wintermelon with basil seeds.
while the “sesame series” is an interesting twist on the drink: it’s blended with real oolong sesame tea. • 375 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair, 973.744.1647; 315 Millburn Ave., Millburn, 973.467.8833; kungfutea.com
Yaya Tea, Newark. This shop takes bubble tea to the next level thanks to a special purification system that brews fresh tea leaves daily. It has all your usual menu items—milk teas, freshly brewed teas and choose-yourown options—in addition to fruit teas with too-cute-for-words titles like “My First Car” (peach and lemon) and “The Hulk” (green apple and kiwi). • 250 Central Ave., Newark, 862.338.9292; yayatea.com
Urban Leaf Café, Nutley. Frozen bubble tea? Yeah, it’s a thing you need to try before the end of the summer, and this place has it in three delish flavors—Oreo, green tea and ube-Oreo. The folks here also have iced fruit teas, as well as traditional milk teas you can customize with toppings of your choice (brown sugar boba, lychee jelly, tapioca, etc.). • 182D Kingsland St., Nutley, 973.542.8663; urbanleafcafenj. square.site
CULINARY CORNER WHEN THEY COME, YOU WILL BUILD IT The BYOB phenomenon—“build your own bowl,” of course—isn’t going anywhere, and Goji Superfoods is jumping aboard the trend. Created by two health food enthusiasts, this Montclair fast-casual spot specializes in superfoodenriched bowls, which can be customized with different bases (goji, acai, chia, etc.), flavors and as many toppings as will fit. The bowls have enough nutrients to serve as a healthy meal replacement or can be a dessert or snack, depending on what you order. Opening date? “Fall 2021.” • Goji Superfoods, 427 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair; gojisuper.com
TAKE ITALY HOME A trio of Morristown High grads—executive chef (AJ Sankofa), general manager (Joel Camarillo-Diaz) and operations manager (Isaiah Findley-Pinnock)—have been working together again since Eso Artisanal Pasta opened its new shop in June. (They were previously co-workers at Jockey Hollow Bar and Kitchen.) On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, this gang sells fresh pasta, ready-made sauces, olive oil, cheese and more ingredients that help you create an amazing Italian meal at home. Fridays and Saturdays are for retail and takeout, when they offer hot pasta dishes that are ready to eat. Each purchase also comes with a step-bystep guide on how to cook each type of pasta and sauce to perfection at home, and all the ingredients are imported directly from Italy. • Eso Artisanal Pasta, 92 Elm St., Morristown, 201.520.1546; esoartisanalpasta.com
A NEW KIND OF STEAKHOUSE You may have to wait until the end of the year for this new restaurant to open— staffing is still an issue here, says management—but it’ll be worth the wait. Chef Chris Siversen, known for his culinary creations at Maritime Parc in Jersey City, will helm an upscale steakhouse and sushi spot called The Feathered Fox at the Westminster Hotel in Livingston. In addition to sirloins, sashimi, lobster and oysters, the chef promises the menu will feature at least eight vegetarian options at all times: one entrée, three apps, plus sides and salads. • The Feathered Fox, 550 W. IT’S TIME TO LAUGH AGAIN
Kung Fu Tea, Montclair and Millburn. Another well-known chain is Kung Fu Tea, which has seemingly endless options of milk teas, punch (tea paired with lemonade and fruit flavors), milk caps and slushies. The “milk strike” series is the perfect dairy-free option,
Chelsea Handler left New Jersey for Hollywood after graduating from Livingston High School at the age of 19—but now she’s back on the East Coast! The comedian, producer and author extraordinaire is currently on the road on her 40-stop “Vaccinated and Horny Tour,” her first foray into live shows since 2019. The 21-and-overonly show is making stops at the nearby Beacon Theatre in Manhattan on Oct. 16 and the Borgata in Atlantic City on Nov. 26—and don’t you think getting in some laughs in a crowd with strangers is the best way to celebrate after a global pandemic? PAGING POTENTIAL PET OWNERS
HER LIFE IS FASHION We don’t always give Gen Z-ers enough credit, but here’s one who deserves it for sure: Brianna Rizzi. The 23-year-old Nutley native and fashion studies student at Montclair State University has loved fashion since she was a kid. After graduating from Nutley High School, she attended a trade school in Manhattan and completed fashion internships at big brands such as Marchesa, which she says prepared and inspired her to launch her own brand, B.RizDesigns. The brand, which currently features three swimwear collections and a brand-new line of workout gear, all in bright patterns and colors, is all about expressing yourself through what you wear, with an emphasis on size-inclusivity. For the promotional photos, says Rizzi, “I used my friends, all different shapes and sizes, and all completely perfect. There was no photoshopping at all because I want them for them, not for how I can make them look.” The Belleville resident, who has a 9–5 job as an assistant designer, also releases a line of men’s and women’s tracksuits in late August, as well as matching tracksuits for puppies (look for her own cockapoo, Stella, in the promo shoot on @b.rizdesigns!). Swimsuits are currently available at briannariz.com. “I plan to keep everything online for now, but I am working on finding a manufacturer to allow me to have more products so hopefully I can do a popup soon,” says the busy Rizzi. “Stay tuned!”
An article in our February/March issue looked at pet adoption during the pandemic; we spoke to local pet owners and adoption centers about the boom in dog and cat adoptions and fosters. Shelters couldn’t keep up with the demand! Now, however, adoptions have slowed as life returns to normal and as many people leave their homes more often. Yet plenty of animals are still looking for their “furever” families. “Our adoption numbers for both cats and dogs have gone down since the peak of the pandemic—over the past 18 months, our monthly average for dogs was 108, and in June we adopted 80, vs. 66 and 50 for cats,” says Jay Karamanol, a member of the executive committee of Eleventh Hour Rescue in Dover. “Now more than ever we are seeing animals in need of rescue from high-kill states, as well as local pets who may get returned to us because their owners don’t have time to care for and train them.” So why not celebrate National Dog Day, Aug. 26, by welcoming a new furry friend into your family? The local shelters below will be more than happy to help you find The One. Note that not all of these organizations have physical addresses (and many no longer permit walk-ins anyway due to COVID), so call or visit their websites for more info and to find out more about the pets they’re looking to find homes for: Morris County:

PUPPY LOVE Dog: Enzo, 1-year-old Cavapoo Owners: Saagar Patel and Nikita Chothani, Cedar Grove Newlyweds Saagar and Nikita made the move earlier this year from Weehawken to Cedar Grove, but before they purchased their new home, they purchased their now 1-year-old pup. After doing lots of research, the couple found Enzo during the pandemic via a breeder in Pennsylvania—and knew he’d be the perfect addition to their family. “Enzo is super-friendly and loves people,” his pawrents say, in addition to his love for biscuits, a good cuddle sesh and puppy playdates with his friend Jaxx. This Cavapoo is still getting to know his favorite spots in his new neighborhood, but he already knows what he likes at home. “Enzo will not get out of his crate in the morning until we say, ‘Gooood morning, Enzo!’ as we rub his belly,” his owners say. Smart pup! Follow Enzo on his daily adventures via Instagram @_enzoari. And if you’d like your pet to be featured in a future issue, email our editor, Rita Guarna, at rita.guarna@wainscotmedia.com. { EARLY EDUCATION }
LEARN TO WALK. Teach your tot not just how to walk but how to balance too with the physician-invented Delta Children First Steps Learn2Walk Balancer. Bungee technology helps little ones safely maintain center of gravity, while interactive features and “play mode” also help build fine motor skills. Ages 6 months to 2 years. Available at buybuy Baby, Livingston, 973.422.0431.
Learning Curve! These toys promise to help your little one build knowledge through everyday fun. Babies and toddlers have no official schoolwork, but their “curriculum” is the most ambitious one going: the world itself. Playing is their way of discovering, and toys can facilitate that process. The eight educational products here have been hand-picked by our editors (hey, some of us are parents too!) to foster your child’s skills and imagination in a way that’s both fun and engaging. Help your youngster...
LEARN THE ALPHABET. With this one your child will surely get an “A”—and all the other letters too. A bilingual baby? Si, Señor, with the Musical Turtle Toy in English and Spanish from iPlay iLearn. This little guy has four modes: numbers, letters, happy laughter and “crawl and chase,” the last of which is perfect once your tyke starts moving. Ages 6 months to 6 years. Available at iplayilearn.com.
LEARN TO PLAY MUSIC. Inspire your rockstar-in-the-making to get strumming with the Loog Mini acoustic guitar, which has three strings to make learning to play a breeze. It even comes with an app and flash cards that teach kids how to form chords. Ages 3 and up. Available at loogguitars.com.

LEARN THROUGH ROLE PLAYING. The LittiCity Pretend Play Teachers Set gets a gold star for creativity. The play set comes with a dry-erase board, classroom posters, reward stickers, a school bell and more props, teaching aspiring educators their numbers and letters through role play and dress-up. Ages 3 and up. Available at Walmart, Cedar Knolls, 973.889.8646.
LEARN TO STRATEGIZE. Young children may not be quite ready for a game of Risk, but they can learn strategy via Monza, a classic racing-car board game from Haba in which the goal is to be the first one to the finish line. The 20th-anniversary version comes in a limited-edition, metalembossed tin with metallic painted dice and a new track. Ages 5 and up. Available at Marco’s Emporium, Pompton Plains, 973. 835.3443.
LEARN TO COUNT. Numbers, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills are among the things toddlers will finesse with the Haba Rainbow Caterpillar Threading Game. Bonus: The “sewing” will keep them busy and concentrating so hard they’ll pretty much forget about their iPads. Ages 3 and up. Available at Biddle and Bop, West Orange, 813.830.1197.
LEARN TO BE HEALTHY. Mask-wearing and hand-sanitizing this year didn’t teach kids enough about germs, right? They’ll learn even more about how to protect their bodies with MEandMine’s Fish Out Germs, which includes a fishing game, a book and a trio of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) projects. The goal of the fishing game is to build up white blood cells and “fish out” germs through sensory play and building. Ages 5 to 8. Available at amazon.com.
LEARN TO BUILD. Focus and patience are the names of the game with Plus-Plus GO! Monster Trucks, which let your kid’s imagination run (or race?) wild. This kit contains 600 pieces, 10 wheels and three chassis baseplates to allow for customization of each vehicle. Ages 5 to 12. Available at Target, Rockaway, 973.989.5740.

Meat, that is. A study of 20,000 people showed that red and processed meat eaters had poorer heart function and stiffer arteries. Experts theorize that the trimethylamine NOxide (TMAO) produced when we digest red meats causes tissue and blood vessel damage. —Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine

DROP IN LIFE EXPECTANCY
Americans can expect to live a year less than they could in 2019, in large part because of deaths linked to COVID-19. Average life expectancy, based on data from January to June 2020, is 77.8 years, down from 78.8 in 2019.

PREDIABETES A RISK?
In adults 65 years or older, having an elevated blood sugar level, or prediabetes, once believed to be a good indication of developing type 2 diabetes, might not be a worry after all. A recent study found that about 8 percent of older adults with prediabetes went on to develop the disease.

{ IN GOOD HEALTH }
Planning is underway for Saint Barnabas Medical Center’s Pink Crusade Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign this fall. The Saint Barnabas Medical Center’s Pink Crusade Committee began organizing its annual fall Pink Crusade event in February. It’s a multi-faceted awareness campaign that continues every October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month as a creative approach to educating women across New Jersey about the importance of breast health. The campaign features community outreach and a fundraiser highlighting breast health strategies while also providing an elegant and entertaining networking evening. Rosemary Scoppetuolo, RN, BSN, a former oncology nurse and administrative director of women’s services, envisioned the program seven years ago, and with the help of the Saint Barnabas Medical Center Foundation, was able to make it a reality. “Helping women to maintain optimum breast health is my heartfelt passion,” Scoppetuolo says. “The Pink Crusade campaign promotes mammograms, breast self-exams and healthy lifestyle choices as important steps to detect breast cancer

early, when it is most treatable.” For the first five years, The Pink Crusade fundraiser was a renowned fashion show at The Park Savoy Estate in Florham Park, drawing an audience of more than 400 each year. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the organizers to cancel the in-person gathering and switch to a modified virtual event. With the unsettled nature of COVID-19 guidelines, the Committee planned something different this year. Depending on crowd restrictions at the time, the event will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2021 at the Essex County Country Club in West Orange, with a limited number of tickets available. The event will feature a presentation from a keynote speaker. “Our Committee includes several breast cancer survivors; they and the other Committee members have a personal commitment to the cause,” Scoppetuolo says. “We are pleased to partner with a number of community organizations to reach as many people as possible.”
WHEN TO GET SCREENED • Women between 40 and 44 have the option to start screening with a mammogram every year • Women 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year • Women 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every other year, or choose to continue yearly mammograms. Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live at least 10 more years.

DON’T SHOULDER THE PAIN
Two sports medicine/orthopedic surgeons from SBMC explain how to get relief from rotator cuff injuries and discuss muscle and joint issues that present in youth athletes. Orthopedic injuries are common for athletes who play at the high school, collegiate or professional levels— many young men and women suffer from ACL tears, hip labral tears, meniscus tears, shoulder dislocation, elbow ligament tears and the like. But sports medicine doctors, including those at Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC), treat not only these athletically-inclined patients, but also those who have shoulder and rotator cuff injuries, which are sometimes found in athletes but, due to their degenerative nature, more frequently occur in the older population. “The rotator cuff is a group of tendons that attach to the ball and socket joint in the shoulder and lives between the ball and the shoulder blades,” says John Feldman, M.D, orthopedic surgeon at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. “Over time, they get recessed between those structures and tear and once torn they will not heal, which can cause pain and dysfunction.” Louis Rizio, M.D., orthopedic surgery, sports medicine at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, adds that every decade we advance in age starting at age 50 or 60, the chance of a tear increases even without trauma or injury because the tendons degenerate. “Treating this condition earlier than later means we have higher healing rates and we prevent deteriorations that can’t be fixed,” he says. However, rotator cuff injuries can and do present in athletes as well, and that is typically due not necessarily to contact sports, but more so to overuse of the shoulder. “Baseball pitchers, volleyball players, swimmers and tennis players are at risk here,” says Dr. Rizio. “since these athletes have repetitive upper extremity use where it’s high force and high velocity.” There is no way to prevent rotator cuff injury either in the older population or in athletes: You can’t avoid a significant fall, for example. But many athletes are put on a regular program of rotator cuff strengthening and
stretching of the shoulder, and also have trainers that are in tune to therapeutic exercises that help keep the rotator cuff in tip-top shape. Dr. Rizio and Dr. Feldman, both RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group and fellowship-trained physicians, treat rotator cuff injuries with minimally-invasive techniques rather than open surgery. Dr. Rizio says this makes for a recovery that is “less painful, there is less scar tissue and patients have a smoother course and lower narcotic usage after surgery.” This arthroscopic approach involves repairing the injured tendon by inserting a narrow tube attached to a fiberoptic video camera through a series of smaller incisions. Additionally, for certain cases, Dr. Rizio performs PRP therapy, platelet rich plasma, which involves taking blood from the arm, spinning the blood and then concentrating the platelets to stimulate a healing response on the injured tendon, ligament or muscle. “There is no evidence that it works for a complete tear without surgery,” Dr. Rizio says, “but PRP might enhance or augment healing of a repair.” Still, regardless of the surgical technique, full recovery from rotator cuff surgery is extensive and takes time, both doctors warn. With the appropriate time, data shows that surgery is extremely successful at returning function to the joints.
John Feldman, M.D.
Louis Rizio, M.D.
ARE YOU AT RISK? Many rotator cuff patients, especially those over the age of 70, are asymptomatic, says Dr. Feldman. “However, rotator cuff problems are the most common reason for someone over the age of 50 to have shoulder pain and dysfunction.” Dr. Rizio suggests getting evaluated by a doctor if you’re over the age of 50 and have a new onset of symptoms—pain, weakness or loss of motion—or if you’ve had an injury or fall that has caused a sudden onset of shoulder pain.

n 12 Hawaiian-style rolls cut in half crosswise (do not separate the rolls) n ¾ lb. deli ham, thinly sliced n ½ lb. Swiss cheese, sliced n 6 Tbs. butter, melted n 2 tsp. Dijon mustard n 2 tsp. poppy seeds n 1½ tsp. dried minced onion n 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce n 1 Tbs. parsley, chopped n cooking spray
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Coat a sheet pan with cooking spray. Place the bottom half of the rolls on the pan. Layer the ham on top of the rolls, then layer the cheese over the ham. SLOPPY JOES Yields 6 sandwiches
INGREDIENTS:
n 1 Tbs. butter n 2 garlic cloves, minced n 1 onion, finely chopped n 1 green capsicum/bell pepper, diced n 1 lb. ground beef, minced n 1 Tbs. Dijon mustard (or 1 tsp. dry mustard) n 1½ Tbs. brown sugar n ½ cup ketchup n 14.1 oz. canned crushed tomato n 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce n 1 Tbs. tomato paste n 1 beef bouillon cube, crumbled n ¼ tsp. black pepper To serve: n 5 to 6 soft rolls n cheese slices (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
Melt butter in a large pot over high heat. Add garlic and onion and cook for 2 minutes until onion is almost translucent. Add capsicum and cook for 2 minutes until softened. Add beef and cook, breaking it up as you go, until it changes from red to brown. Add remaining ingredients. Mix well, then turn heat down to medium low (or low for strong stoves). Cover and cook for 30 minutes, stirring once or twice to make sure it doesn’t catch on the base. (If in a hurry, cook 15 minutes without lid.) Remove lid and give it a good stir for a minute. Mixture should be thick, not runny and saucy. Adjust salt to taste. Toast rolls. Butter if desired. Pile on lots of filling, immediately top with cheese (heat should semi-melt, otherwise pop under broiler/grill). Top with lid and serve immediately.
To make this dish healthier, simply replace the butter with avocado, canola or olive oil when sautéing your veggies, and substitute ground turkey or ground chicken for ground beef. If you prefer beef, go for 93 percent lean. If your kids love cheese with their sloppy joes, use reduced-fat or partskim cheeses.” —Andrea Berez, RD, NJ Pediatric & Family Nutrition

(or as needed) olive oil or butter n 4 oz. grated cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, Mexican blend) n 4 slices bacon (cooked until crispy) n 4 large “burrito-sized” flour tortillas n chipotle aioli, for drizzling n salt and pepper to taste For the chipotle aioli: n ½ cup all-natural mayonnaise n ½ lemon, juiced n 2 tsp. chipotle adobo sauce (or to taste) n 1/8 tsp. garlic powder n 1/8–¼ tsp. ground cayenne pepper plus extra to taste n 1/8 tsp. salt
DIRECTIONS:
To make the chipotle sauce, whisk together ingredients and set aside. Recipe yields approximately ½ cup of sauce. Cook bacon via preferred method until crispy. Chop into bite-sized pieces and set aside. Whisk eggs. Heat a pan with oil/butter to medium heat, add eggs and scramble until cooked through. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Add eggs to a greased pan heated to medium heat and scramble until cooked through. Transfer cooked eggs to a large bowl. For easy burrito assembly, warm each tortilla in the microwave for 20 seconds to steam it before filling/ rolling, as they’re easier to fold when warm. For each burrito, warm tortilla and arrange eggs, bacon and cheese in the center of each tortilla. Drizzle with chipotle aioli. Fold and roll until sealed. Place seam-side down.
—Andrea Berez, RD, NJ Pediatric & Family Nutrition
Bring a pan to medium heat with a little oil to prevent sticking. Once the pan is hot, add the burritos, seam side down and cook for about 3 minutes each side or until burritos are hot in the center and golden on the outside. Serve with additional chipotle sauce.

Swap half the eggs in this recipe (3) for 9 egg whites or liquid egg white substitute, use reduced fat or part-skim cheese and reduce the amount to 3 oz. to lower the fat content. You can also swap uncured turkey bacon for regular bacon, and use whole grain burritos to avoid unnecessary calories and saturated fats.”

Snoring has several consequences that can impact the life of a snorer. Sleep deprivation because of snoring has a negative impact on health and quality of life. Snorers can experience tiredness, morning headaches, irritability, dry mouth, and relationship difficulties. Studies have also shown a link between snoring and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. If you snore or suffer from sleep apnea, you may be a candidate for a new laser treatment called NightLase. NightLase is a non-invasive, appliance free, and effective way of reducing or eliminating snoring. NightLase works by using laser energy to heat the tissues of the airway causing a tightening effect which helps to keep your airway open. { POWER FOOD }
Grape Expectations You’d imagine this juicy, bite-sized fruit to be nutritious as well as refreshing. You’d be right. The grape is a crisp, refreshing treat that has nourished everyone from the emperors of yore to the oenophiles of today. The versatile fruit, from the genus Vitis (and in botanical terms considered a berry), is the basis not only for wine, but also for juices and jams and jellies and raisins. And by itself, snapped from its native bunch, it’s no mean pop-inyour-mouth snack. Grapes’ wide diversity, from the type you’d spot in vineyards to those you find in the produce section, makes them one of the most bountiful and widely available foods. Grapes as a standard crop date back to ancient civilizations. Records in China show grapes being used in fermented beverages as early as 7000 B.C. Iran has similar annals noting the residue from grapes in pots just as long ago. There are references to wine in classic mythology and religious literature. And it’s a common belief that raisins were discovered in ancient times as well when, as the crop was grown on vine after vine, some grapes were left on too long and eventually dried and wrinkled.
BUY/STORE/SERVE There’s thankfully not much mystery in how to attain grapes if one wishes. Grocery stores come to mind immediately, and any number of farmers’ markets may give you that organic edge you’re looking for. Look for fruit that are plump, smooth-skinned and brightly hued, without too many irregularities. Remember to wash only the grapes you’ll be able to eat in one sitting. In a tightly sealed plastic bag they’re usually good in the fridge for one to two weeks. Place them in the crisper for added humidity, which helps the grapes keep longer. Or freeze them if you plan to cook with them later, as long as you use them all in one go. Grapes are so open and inviting that rinsing them in the sink and plucking them right off the stem can do nicely.
But if you need more frills for your consumption, consider freezing them beforehand. Add a little powdered sugar if you’re looking to spoil yourself. Grapes make a great base for a fruit salad or a smoothie. Their sweet flavor, smooth texture and acidic nature enable them to pair with a number of dishes. Maybe a nice cheese plate. Or consider roasting your grapes for a crostini; it makes the juice that much sweeter. And they always do well in sauces, spreads and garnishes as sides to any meat dish. A few grapes go nicely with a flank steak or even roast pork. —Brian Kelley
POWER UP As one might expect from any fruit or berry, grapes’ health benefits are manifold. They contain antioxidants such as carotenoids and polyphenols that promote heart health and skin health. Some properties are said to help prevent the formation of free radicals, aiding the body in combating common types of cancer. That same action against free radicals—particularly by the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin—is thought to protect the eyes from retinal damage, making cataracts less likely. So if you’re looking to maintain good vision, keep an eye out for grapes. If vitamin supplements of K and C aren’t within reach, it might help to snag off a bunch of this natural supply of both. In fact, the potassium content in grapes is so concentrated it can help regulate blood pressure and also boost the body’s storage of electrolytes. They help you to flush out excess water and toxins that you naturally produce, in case you were feeling a little burdened by them lately. A 100-gram serving of your common grapes found in stores has about 70 calories, as well as about 20 milligrams of phosphorus, which is vital to promoting the strength of bones and teeth. We’re all looking to stay healthy these days, and consuming grapes—either red or green—is an easy and effective step in that direction. Not bad for a handy little fruit that’s 81 percent water!
DID YOU KNOW? The oldest living grapevine in North America is believed to be the “Mother Vine” in Manteo, North Carolina. Reputedly discovered in 1584, it yields grapes that produce a classic wine to this day. MSXHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

Wainscot Media publishes several special sections throughout the year in our regional magazines. Contact us today to learn more about freelance opportunities available. What is a Periodontist? A periodontist is a specialist in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases that affect gums and supporting bones of the teeth. Your general dentist may refer you to a periodontist if it’s determined further specialized treatment is needed when disease is present. In addition, periodontists specialize in the surgical placement of dental implants when teeth are lost due to gum disease or other tooth traumas. A highly-trained periodontist can correct a gummy smile, gum recession or other non-disease complications with surgical and non-surgical techniques. Working closely with general dentists and other dental specialists, my team and I are dedicated to improving the overall health and aesthetics of every patient’s beautiful smile.
Can my teeth be saved if my gums are damaged?

Depending on the severity and progression of a person’s periodontal condition, multiple treatment options are available to restore your natural teeth, supporting soft tissue and bone back to health. Bleeding gums, periodontal pockets, bone loss and loose teeth caused by gum disease may be fully treatable with non-surgical or surgical treatments. Our office offers a more effective method of treating gum disease using LANAP laser surgical technique. A high-energy thin laser fiber is inserted into the periodontal pockets killing bad bacteria and eliminating diseased tissue in a less invasive manner. Two weeks after surgery, our patients are very pleased when their gums have returned to a healthy pink and perio pocketing has substantially decreased. If full-mouth restoration is necessary, we offer the option of staged implant restorations (one at a time). Whether we’re able to keep your natural teeth using our state-of-the-art surgical techniques or replace hopeless teeth with dental implants or a full-mouth restoration, we’ll work with you to provide the best options possible.

The short answer is yes! Ninety-nine percent of the time a skillful surgeon is able to regenerate lost bone that’s strong enough for the placement and support of a dental implant. In the upper back teeth area, the sinus floor may prohibit the placement of a dental implant unless bone is first regenerated or grafted into the sinus floor. This procedure, sinus grafting or sinus lift, allows for an implant to be surgically placed into the grafted area after several months of healing time has accrued.

{ A MORRIS/ESSEX MOMENT }
“We had a wonderful time performing at the Morris Museum’s outdoor chamber series. This was the first time I had performed for a live audience since March 2020, so to feel the electricity and positive energy from the audience was very inspiring and invigorating for all of us. The gorgeous sunset, cool breeze and relaxed atmosphere made the experience even more special. It was the perfect way to return to music-making.”
