ALWAYS PREPARED TO DO OUR PART I N F E B R UA RY, WHE N 5 8 -Y E A R- O L D HE CTO R Gonzalez suffered chest pain while shoveling snow, he didn’t pick up on that first cue. But he did on the next one: pain in his legs that developed a few days later. He saw his physician, was sent to the emergency room and became a patient at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. You’ll read his story on page 30. It turns out that Hector had a complex and dangerous condition. Not only had he suffered a heart attack, but he also had a blood clot in his heart and multiple clots in his legs. He needed open-heart surgery, and vascular surgery as well. Fortunately, his operations were performed with complete success and he is now back at work and enjoying life once again. These days, excellent care like that given to Hector requires a cooperative effort in which everyone must do his or her part, from the primary care and specialist physicians to the surgical team and the operating room staff and nurses. Even Hector did his part, by reporting his symptoms to his doctor—and by doing research to choose a medical center with an outstanding record in treating cardiac problems. And he had high praise for the team of clinicians who treated him, led by Frederic F. Sardari, M.D., vice chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. You should know that Saint Barnabas Medical Center is here whenever you or a family member needs its services. It could be for something as urgent as emergency surgery, or for something as basic—yet critical—as helping to guide you to a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle. As chief of cardiology Gary Rogal, M.D., notes in our article about cardiac services on page 32, the best treatment for heart disease is preventing it in the first place. His goal, he says, is to empower patients for heart health. That too is part of health care today. Also in this issue, you’ll read about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (page 35), an ambitious building project that will help meet the community’s growing need (page 36) and ways women can stay healthy and have a good quality of life (page 38). Please enjoy these articles, and remember that we’re always here if you need us—ready to do our part. Best regards,

Laufer, DaLena, CaDiCina, Jensen & BoyD, LLC KIMBERLY BOYD is a partner with Laufer, Dalena, Cadicina, Jensen & Boyd,

LLC in Morristown. She has dedicated her legal career to the practice of Family Law, an area she was unrelentingly drawn to as a third year law student at Seton Hall University School of Law. She has extensive experience with the negotiation, settlement and trial of all aspects of family law, including complex divorce litigation, custody and relocation disputes, business valuations, domestic violence, sibling and grandparents’ rights, drafting and litigating premarital agreements and appellate litigation. She was the youngest attorney ever to be named a partner with Laufer, Dalena, Cadicina, Jensen & Boyd, LLC, which has one of the biggest and fastest growing family law practices in the state. Boyd takes great pride in helping her clients make it through difficult personal matters and transitioning into the next phase of their lives. A former Division I athlete, Boyd is a competitive and tenacious advocate whose client’s best interests are always at the forefront. She combines an immense dedication, with a work ethic that is hard to rival, in all of her cases. Although she is at home in the courtroom, she recognizes the emotional toll that litigation can take and has successfully mediated hundreds of cases. Boyd is qualified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey to mediate family law matters. Both in the legal community and in the community at large, Boyd actively donates her time, serving on the Supreme Court Committee on Women In the Courts and the Morris County Bar Association Early Settlement Panel for matrimonial litigation. She also volunteers for the Battered Women Legal Advocacy project, where she volunteers as an attorney for domestic violence victims. She has also sat on the Board of Directors for the Junior League of Morristown.

Spruce it up!

If you’ve always wanted to work with an interior designer, but thought it would break your budget, it’s time to Spruce It Up! The designer consultation program allows you to get expert advice from an interior designer for an affordable price, and your fee is donated to a worthy cause, Habitat for Humanity. The New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) will pair you with an interior designer who can offer guidance and direction on how to rethink and remake the look of your home or business. The fee for the one- or two-hour consultation is $150 per hour, which goes directly to the Habitat for Humanity location of your choice (there are 24 in New Jersey). Through Spruce It Up!, the ASID NJ Chapter raised almost $13,000 for Habitat for Humanity last year. Contact ASID by October 15 and request a Spruce It Up! consultation; call 732.787.5981 or email spruceitup@asidnj.org.

September, of course, marks the start of the school year in our area. But you may not know that September is also Fruits & Veggies—More Matters Month, a national health initiative focused on spreading the word about the benefits of adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Among the many advantages are a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and some types of cancer. Yet, despite these facts, many Americans don’t eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables every day—a mere two to three cups for adult men and women. Following are some easy, flavorful ways to fix that. n Add a handful of berries or a sliced banana to your morning cereal, oatmeal or plain yogurt. n During the day, snack on baby carrots, celery sticks, broccoli florets or sliced red pepper—dipped in hummus or guacamole for a nutritional boost. n Pair your lunchtime sandwich with a cup of hearty vegetable soup. n Start dinner with a salad, and microwave a sweet potato or a bag of frozen vegetables for a quick side dish. n Microwave sliced apples with cinnamon and a sprinkling of brown sugar for a delicious dessert. n Add a handful of spinach to a chocolate protein smoothie for a tasty treat any time of day. (You won’t taste the greens!)

They’ve been cutting men’s hair since 1961— with co-owners Adam and Gabor Alex Stibinger following in the footsteps of their grandfather, uncle and father before them. “We were literally born into it,” says Adam, who, with his brother, learned their trade under the tutelage of their grandfather, a master barber who was trained in Hungary and emigrated to the U.S. in 1956. “I feel that Adam and I are keepers of a lost art,” adds Gabor Alex. This past May, the scissors-and-razor-wielding brothers broke from 54 years of tradition and relocated the barbershop from its original spot in Ledgewood to a larger space in Kenvil. The move has given Adam and Gabor Alex the opportunity to expand their services, creating a dedicated hot-shave room and developing their own line of hair-styling products. Not to worry, though; you’ll still get a great cut in the new place. “We’ll always remain true to our classical roots,” says Adam, “spending time with each customer, asking questions about their current hairstyle and preferences. We want to make sure they get the perfect solution for their needs and the image they want to project.” Spoken like a master barber. No need to search far for a glass of fine wine. Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen in Morristown was one of only two Garden State restaurants featured in Wine Enthusiast’s America’s 100 Best Wine Restaurants 2015. The Dining Room at Chris Cannon’s culinary hub was praised for its “tasting menus” and “dynamic wine pairings” (particularly the monkfish porchetta paired with Heinrich 2008 St. Laurent from Austria). Not in the mood for pairings? You can choose one of the 400 selections offered in The Wine Vault. Fun Fact: Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen is housed in the landmark (circa 1917) Vail mansion, the opulent former home of Theodore N. Vail, the first president of AT&T. The Dining Room, at the top of a grand staircase, occupies the family’s living quarters. Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen, 110 South St., Morristown, 973.644.3180; jockeyhollowbarandkitchen.com

You know you’re supposed to wear sunscreen every day— to prevent skin cancer as well as premature aging. We’ve found the solution: Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50+. This broad-spectrum sunscreen is lightweight, absorbs quickly and has a wonderful matte finish—perfect for wearing under foundation. It’s fragrance-free, oil-free and paraben-free too. pony up! don’t dismiss this versatile, timeless tail as a onetrick pony.

What’s one thing Beyoncé, Blake Lively and Jessica Alba have in common? They all rock the ponytail. But with the possibilities they’ve explored, you won’t mistake any of them for a ’50s teenage babysitter. At the Met Gala, Queen B wore her superlong locks in a high pony flowing from a perch atop her head. Blake often turns up at awards shows sporting a high braided ponytail, while Jessica favors a sleek side pony with a deep side part. Other ponytail possibilities: Play it loose with sideswept bangs or a few face-framing strands, add volume to the crown by teasing the roots, accessorize with a metal clasp or leather tie. To achieve the classic look shown here, use a strong styling gel and complete the ’do by wrapping a length of hair around the elastic and pinning it in place. Pony perfection!

A TRIUMPH IN

OPEN-HEART SURGERY HECTOR GONZALEZ KNEW HIS FAMILY HAD A HISTORY OF HEART

problems. His late father had a heart bypass years ago. But as recently as two years back, when Gonzalez was 58, there was no sign of trouble in his electrocardiogram (EKG), a test that checks for damage by measuring the heart’s electrical activity. Then in February, when he was shoveling snow, the Verona resident felt discomfort in his chest. He ignored it at the time.

30

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015

MRSX.0815.HealthREV4.indd 30

|

But a few days later, he experienced pain in his legs and went to see his physician. Based on new EKG results, he was told to go to the emergency room. He had experienced a heart attack. In addition, blood clots from his heart had gone to his legs. The clots would have to be dealt with or they could go to other parts of his body, including his brain. Gonzalez’s cardiologist explained the situation to him, and

he agreed to have it corrected with open-heart surgery. “It was a no-brainer,” he says. “I didn’t want to live under the threat of what could happen if I didn’t have the surgery.” He did his homework when it came to hospitals and surgeons. “I looked at the hospitals in the area. Saint Barnabas Medical Center had a good performance record, and there are a lot of good cardiologists there,” he says. One of those cardiologists, Alan S. Lapa, M.D., performed tests and diagnosed Gonzalez’s condition. And Frederic F. Sardari, M.D., vice chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, sized up his prospects for surgery. “Hector’s case was very unusual,” he recalls. “He’d had a big heart attack, and because of that he had clots in his heart, which isn’t typical. Then clots traveled from his heart to his legs.” As the surgery approached, Dr. Sardari reviewed Gonzalez’s tests, including a cardiac catheterization (angiogram), and assessed the situation. “We knew he had the blockages,” he says. “An echocardiogram showed the clot in the left ventricle of his heart. And the vascular surgeon knew about the clots in his leg from ultrasound exams of the legs. The question was: Do we wait for the clot in his heart to dissolve on its own? Because the clot was so big, we decided to operate.” On March 5, the open-heart operation was performed by a team spearheaded by Dr. Sardari and including vascular surgeon Cindy Sturt, M.D. It turns out that Gonzalez needed four bypasses, a valve repair and, of course, the removal of the clots from his legs. “Fortunately I was able to remove the clot in his heart easily without any of it breaking off or spreading,” says Dr. Sardari. “The heart attack had damaged a valve as well, so at the same time I repaired that. “Then, when we were finished with his heart, Dr. Sturt removed the clots from his legs because they were in danger of doing damage,” adds Dr. Sardari. “The surgery went well. His heart, which looked pretty weak initially, improved a lot.” Gonzalez was walking the next day. But he did need extra time in the Intensive Care Unit because of the scope of his surgery. About a month after Gonzalez left the hospital, he was back at work at his Banco Popular office in Manhattan. “The outcome Frederic of my heart operation was very positive,” he F. Sardari, M.D. says. Asked how he would counsel someone SHUTTERSTOCK

Pictured is a grateful Hector Gonzalez, who underwent complex open-heart surgery earlier this year.

facing the same situation he faced, he’s upbeat. “Technology is always moving forward,” he says. “Every day that goes by will make the heart operations better.” In June, Gonzalez received permission to begin physical therapy. Dr. Sardari notes that after heart surgery patients no longer have chest pain and shortness of breath. Just as important, their chances of future heart attacks are greatly reduced. “And the risks of the operation are very low,” the doctor adds. Gonzalez is thankful for the care he received at Saint Barnabas. “I was very satisfied,” he says. “From the head nurse to the operating room staff to the recovery nurses, everyone was excellent. They went above and beyond what they had to do.” At one point, Gonzalez remembers, the pain medication was making him hallucinate. The nurses immediately recognized the problem and changed the medication that was causing it. “The nurses knew just what to do,” he says. And Dr. Sardari? “He’s an incredible person. Always has a smile. He’s open, direct and always optimistic.” If it hadn’t been for this operation, Gonzalez believes, he wouldn’t be here today—“or I would have no quality of life.” Says Dr. Sardari: “The moral of his story is that it took a lot of people—and good care from all of them—to really get Hector through. From the time he was diagnosed through treatment of his chest and leg and through the rehabilitation he required, it really was a successful team effort.”

AT SAINT BARNABAS, ‘OPEN HEART’ HAS TWO MEANINGS

Open-heart surgery is any type of procedure in which the chest is cut open and surgery is performed on the muscles, valves or arteries of the heart. And while there are minimally invasive alternatives these days, many patients—like Hector Gonzalez—are not candidates for that type of cardiac repair. At Saint Barnabas Medical Center, there are typically 350–400 open-heart procedures a year; in the Barnabas Health system, including Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, that number is 600–700. Yet with all the technical expertise, staff knowledge and latest technology brought to bear, it’s still the program’s patient-centered care philosophy—its “open heart” for patients—that ensures its success. The numerous awards and accreditations earned by the Barnabas Health Heart Centers are a natural consequence of the medical center’s commitment to the highest quality care.

HEART BYPASS, EXPLAINED

We hear the word “bypass” a lot, but what exactly is it? Officially termed a coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), a heart bypass is the most common type of heart surgery performed on adults. In it, a healthy artery or vein is grafted (attached) to a blocked artery. This allows the grafted artery to “bypass” the blocked artery and bring fresh blood to the heart.

the best. That’s why the northern hospitals in the Barnabas Health system have developed nationally recognized state-of-the-art Heart Centers. Their integrated cardiac services run the gamut from emergency departments, which provide lifesaving treatment of heart attack, to comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of the full range of cardiac conditions by cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. These services range from minimally invasive valve and bypass surgeries to complex open-heart operations, catheter-based interventions and arrhythmia management. And their heart transplant program is the nation’s third largest. One factor that sets Barnabas Health apart: Both of its main cardiac sites—Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Saint Barnabas Medical Center—offer “intervention for heartattack patients that is world-class and has beaten all standard metrics,” says Gary J. Rogal, M.D., chief of cardiology at Barnabas Health. “Their success rates are superb.” Among the keys to success are new technologies implemented by a highly trained Frederic F. Sardari, M.D., and Gary J. Rogal, M.D. team, including heart surgeons who are

recognized national leaders and have been trained at some of the top facilities in the world. They are experienced in using the most up-to-date imaging and treatment technologies and are considered innovators in their fields. For example, they introduced the VAD (ventricular assist device) therapy in New Jersey and continue to bring the most advanced surgical techniques to the region. Barnabas Health is working to integrate its diagnostic, medical and surgical services into a single cardiac program to optimize patient care. “We’re moving toward a comprehensive and collaborative approach,” says Dr. Rogal. “Multidisciplinary teams review the most challenging cases, and all of the departments involved can share information seamlessly.” “It’s a new development that’s going to be good for everybody,” says Frederic F. Sardari, M.D., vice chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Saint Barnabas, adding that patient information is now digitized and can be easily shared between hospitals. Barnabas Health has created a seamless yet expansive network of cardiac services and facilities that is coordinated as a single program, bringing together consultation,

A NATIONAL LEADER IN TRANSPLANTS

The Barnabas Health Heart Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center has a long and distinguished history in the field of cardiology. Its pioneering physicians performed the first early coronary bypass procedures in the 1950s, and their work in the development and use of pacemakers is world-renowned. New Jersey’s first heart transplant was performed there in 1986. Today, Newark Beth Israel’s Heart Failure Treatment and Transplant Program has performed more than 800 heart transplants, with a success rate that has consistently met or exceeded the national average, according to the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. This reputation for excellence also makes Newark Beth Israel a leader in breakthrough therapies.

4 NEW TOOLS IN CARDIAC CARE

Barnabas Health Heart Centers’ cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons regularly pioneer new procedures and devices that change the outlook for many patients. Minimally invasive surgery, for example, is constantly improving. “Progress is measured by smaller and smaller incisions and by repairing valves as opposed to replacing them,” says Frederic F. Sardari, M.D., vice chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Here are four new therapies: Hybrid MAZE A-fib Ablation. Treating atrial fibrillation (A-fib) has traditionally required long procedures associated with lower success rates, explains Gary J. Rogal, M.D., chief of cardiology at Barnabas Health. There were three approaches: with drug therapy, with moderately invasive surgery or in a catheterization lab, where the results tended to vary. “But now with this hybrid approach, part is done with minimally invasive surgery and the rest in the cath lab on the same day,” says the doctor. “It’s the best of both worlds,” adds Dr. Sardari. “Good results without the risk of surgery. And there are just a few places that do it on the East Coast.” Says Dr. Rogal: “This will take treatment for A-fib to the next level.” TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement). This is a promising method of replacing the aortic valve without open-heart surgery. The new valve is threaded through a catheter usually placed in the groin. The chest is not opened. TAVR has been used in more than 400 cases at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and is coming to Saint Barnabas Medical Center. “It’s exciting because many patients have aortic stenosis, tightening of the valve, and regular surgery is too risky, but they can see a lot of improvement by having TAVR,” says Dr. Sardari. “It’s going to help a lot of people.” Because of its high success rate, the Barnabas Health team is a national leader in the procedure. And that attracts new devices for evaluation. The valve center is becoming an incubator for these new therapies. Mitraclip. This new minimally invasive system for fixing leaky mitral heart valves through a catheter is now being used at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Like other minimally invasive techniques, it’s a potential life-extender for patients who are unable to have open-heart surgery. The Watchman. This device, which will soon be available at Barnabas Health hospitals, plugs into the atrial chamber to prevent clots from forming in patients with A-fib. Employing the Watchman will be a lower-risk procedure that can be done through a catheter system in under one hour without the risks of general anesthesia. It will allow the patient to avoid long-term anticoagulation.

testing, follow-up care and rehabilitation. This system-wide collaboration offers patients the combined expertise of a broad range of cardiac specialists along with the very latest technology. Outside the hospitals, there is wireless communication with ambulance personnel, sending patient data to the emergency-room physician before the patient arrives. When dealing with the heart, time is of the essence, so the Barnabas Health Heart Centers have been working to get treatment to patients in record time. “Rapid treatment is critical to preserving heart muscle,” says Dr. Rogal. “The sooner you intervene, the better off the patient will be.” Dr. Rogal and his cardiac team are streamlining the process to get patients into treatment quickly. “Seamless communication means that from the time a patient walks through the ER door he or she will have an artery-clearing procedure within 90 minutes, and we’re working on getting that down to 60 minutes,” says Dr. Rogal. “We have thoroughly analyzed the process and have dramatically reduced the time to catheterization. For some heart-attack patients, for example, we get balloons inflated within 30 minutes of their arrival at the hospital.” As vital as rapid response is, the Barnabas Health heart team also knows that the most effective weapon against cardiac disease is keeping it from developing in the first place. “We want to empower patients,” says Dr. Rogal. “So we’re focusing on prevention—not smoking, good diabetes control, cholesterol management and exercise. That’s about 50 percent of cardiac health. And some evidence even suggests that lifestyle modification may impact your genetic heritage.” At the end point of all these medical initiatives is the patient, and patients at Barnabas Health are clearly benefiting from its innovations. The team is dramatically improving the quality of life for individuals with heart disease. Their newest minimally invasive techniques make possible faster recovery with fewer complications. As a model of today’s most progressive cardiac programs, the Barnabas Health heart program combines an experienced team of heart specialists with all the necessary clinical resources to offer patients the highest-quality care possible.

AN ELEPHANT SITTING ON YOUR CHEST?

That’s the way one TV commercial illustrates how it feels to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. Whether or not that’s quite it, there’s no question that having COPD makes life difficult. For some people with the condition, even brushing one’s teeth can be a struggle. More than 11 million Americans suffer from COPD, which involves inflammation and thickening of the airways. It comprises both chronic bronchitis and emphysema, illnesses whose symptoms often overlap. It’s no surprise that by far the leading cause of COPD is smoking. Long-term exposure to air pollution, chemical fumes or dust also may contribute to the disease. The bad news is that there’s no cure for COPD. The good news is that often it can be prevented, and even when you have it there are treatments that can mitigate its effects. One exciting treatment aid that makes life easier for people with COPD is the NIOV (non-invasive open ventilation) system, a one-pound wearable, miniaturized ventilation device that has been introduced at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in partnership with Breathe Technologies Inc. Patients can talk and even exercise while wearing this device clipped onto their belts. And while it’s small, the NIOV has been a huge boon for some individuals. “Rarely do we see things that

make a truly big difference, but this is one of those things,” says Maria Dimi, administrative director of respiratory care and neuro-diagnostics at the medical center. “It’s changing lives.” NIOV has been integrated into the rehabilitation programs of select patients in the Barnabas Health system for about 18 months. According to Dimi, Saint Barnabas is one of the East Coast’s pioneers in implementing the new device. Not all pulmonary patients are candidates for NIOV, but some have used it during rehabilitation and found it so helpful they have requested it for home use. “Some patients need every little edge to keep them from going back on a respirator,” says Dimi. “This can give them that edge.” Physical activity and some form of regular exercise are important for helping these patients improve their long-term health, she adds. Exercise increases their energy so they can, in some cases, resume normal activities. It also helps people maintain a healthy body weight, and it can reduce the frequency of disease-related respiratory issues. Perhaps best of all, in many cases it can brighten one’s psychological outlook. So any tool that makes exercise more feasible is important. “With this device, you can go to the market,” says Dimi. “You can take your grandkids to the park. You can live with COPD. Just knowing that has re-energized many of our patients.”

BUILDING THE

HOSPITAL OF TOMORROW

IN ITS 150TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR, SAINT BARNABAS MEDICAL CENTER LOOKS TO THE FUTURE WITH AN AMBITIOUS NEW CONSTRUCTION PROJECT.

HOW SHOULD A HOSPITAL BE DESIGNED TO SERVE PATIENTS best? That’s been a hot question lately as “evidence-based design” has become popular in health care facility construction. It’s a question the leaders of Saint Barnabas Medical Center have answered with an audacious $250 million building plan that will transform the hospital. Ground was broken in May for the five-story Cooperman Family Pavilion. It will be created with natural materials, soothing colors and abundant natural light, and it will provide the most advanced medical technology as well as spaces to promote privacy and healing. Drawing on the latest findings about how a facility’s design can best promote healing, the new pavilion will feature curb-free showers to prevent falls, acoustic materials to lessen noise and hybrid operating suites that let surgeons switch easily from minimally invasive procedures to “open” ones. After all, doctors who treat patients

follow the methods that have been proven most effective. Why shouldn’t architects do the same? At the May groundbreaking ceremony, John F. Bonamo, M.D., chief medical officer of Barnabas Health and former chief executive officer of Saint Barnabas Medical Center, explained that the ambitious project was inspired partly by a $17 million donation from the estate of the late philanthropist Eric F. Ross, who died at age 91 in 2010 after a career in manufacturing vinyls and plastics. “The Ross donation got us thinking,” said Dr. Bonamo. “What do we really need to prepare this medical center for the next 50 years in health care? We need private rooms. We need more parking. We need to add more greenery to the area. We need bigger operating rooms. We provide the best neonatal care in the country; we need to make the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit five times larger. We need a bigger lobby and more space. This is what we need.”

Ostrowsky, Marc Berson, Richard Kogan and William Cuthill.

Dr. Bonamo told how he and others at the hospital shared their vision with philanthropists Leon and Toby Cooperman. Remembering the excellent care their family had received during three surgical procedures at the medical center, the Coopermans responded with $25 million, the largest donation to Saint Barnabas Medical Center ever. “Forty-seven years ago we came to this great community, and we really want to give back whenever we can,” Leon Cooperman told those gathered outside the hospital for the ceremony. “We worked very hard, we have been very lucky and we have been very successful. And we are adhering to the advice of Andrew Carnegie, who said, ‘He who dies rich dies disgraced.’ Our intention is to support worthy institutions in New Jersey and globally that make for a better life for individuals. I can’t think of any organization more deserving of financial support than Saint Barnabas.” Like Ross and like Carnegie himself, Cooperman came from humble origins. A plumber’s son from the South Bronx, he worked his way through Hunter College to become the first member of his family to earn a B.A., then received an M.B.A. at Columbia University’s School of Business. He went to work for Goldman Sachs & Co., where he eventually became a general partner and founded the company’s asset management business before moving on to launch his own investment firm, Omega Advisors. At the May ceremony, Cooperman was thanked for his generosity by Dr. Bonamo and by Barnabas Health President and CEO Barry H. Ostrowsky, who declared: “This project will provide a state-of-the-art facility with the kind of medical care this community deserves.” The 241,000-square-foot pavilion is expected to be completed in 2017. (See “What the New Pavilion Will Provide,” at right.) And its lobby, reflecting the earlier donation, will be named for Eric F. and Lore Ross. Dr. Bonamo also noted one key fact about the evidence-based design of the new pavilion: Not all of the evidence came from the published papers of design pros, as Saint Barnabas doctors, nurses and patients also gave recommendations that were incorporated in the building’s features. The doctor noted that this is an anniversary year for the medical center, adding: “This project at Barnabas Health’s flagship hospital will make sure we continue to provide advanced, patient-centered care for the people in our communities for another 150 years.”

This rendering shows what the new Cooperman Family Pavilion will look like when it is completed.

WHAT THE NEW PAVILION WILL PROVIDE

These are among the key features of the new Cooperman Family Pavilion (see main article), which is being designed by the award-winning architectural firm Francis Cauffman: ■ Three new nursing units—medical/surgical, orthopedics and oncology—will create a total of 114 single-patient rooms. Each spacious patient room will feature large windows, a desk and sleeping and storage space for the patient’s family. Studies show that single-patient rooms reduce anxiety, encourage communication among patients, doctors and families, and reduce hospital-associated infections. The new patient rooms will allow the hospital to turn existing hospital beds into singlepatient rooms, helping it make the transition to all single-patient rooms. ■ A 37,000-square-foot Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will be five times larger than the current NICU. The re-envisioned unit will accommodate advanced technology and provide families with enhanced privacy through the creation of 48 individual patient bays, all with retractable privacy walls. ■ A West Wing with four new operating suites will be nearly twice the size of existing ORs. The new 700-square-foot ORs are designed to accommodate the latest minimally invasive surgical technology, allowing surgeons to perform a range of procedures. A new Interventional Radiology Suite will allow surgeons to diagnose and treat myriad medical conditions. The additional ORs will bring the hospital’s total to 22. ■ A new parking garage will allow the medical center to replace some of the existing parking space with gardens, and patients will have views of the garden out of their windows. Studies have shown that scenes of nature promote healing and reduce anxiety, even reducing blood pressure. ■ A two-story, light-filled lobby will provide a clear and welcoming arrival point and will be the heart of the transformed Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Patients will arrive and leave from the lobby and be able to easily find their way to any part of the hospital. The lobby is designed to be modern yet comforting, with curvilinear forms and abundant scenes of nature.

HOT TIPS

FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH

WOMEN ARE NOTORIOUS FOR KEEPING A CAREFUL WATCH

on the health of others—children, a spouse, an elderly parent, even an adult sibling—and neglecting their own. But with all the confusing health care information that’s out there these days, even women who see their doctors regularly may lose focus on certain basics. Internist Beth R. Nalitt, M.D., an attending physician at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, wants to remedy that by offering five key bits of advice: Don’t rely too much on your EKG. Heart disease and strokes cause far more deaths in women than all cancers combined, Dr. Nalitt points out, yet sometimes they get less attention. How to guard heart health? First and foremost, exercise! “Get your heart rate to maximum for 20 minutes a day,” says the doctor. “Then focus on managing ‘the big three’: blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar.” She also warns against letting a clear echocardiogram (EKG) lull you into a false sense of security. “That test only gives you one-third of the picture and doesn’t rule out all coronary issues,” she says. “If you have a strong family history of cardiovascular illness, request a stress test.” Do weight-bearing exercises. Osteoporosis and the loss of bone density it brings can cause hip fractures and compressions of the spine—but you’re not helpless. “I have patients who report, ‘I walk from the East Side of Manhattan to Penn Station every day,’” says Dr. Nalitt. “I say, ‘Walking is fine, but how about push-ups, yoga, lifting weights?’ You need to do weight-bearing exercises to promote bone strength and health.” The doctor says women often hesitate Beth R. Nalitt, M.D. to get screened for osteoporosis because it’s not

causing immediate pain. That’s a mistake, because treatments can slow the development of this condition. Ask your physician. Don’t just suffer hot flashes. “Hormone replacement therapy is back on the table,” says Dr. Nalitt. Such treatments got a black eye in 2002 when a large national study found that one combination of them increased women’s risk of heart disease and cancer. But today women needn’t suffer silently with menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. Ask your doctor about safe ways to use hormone therapy. “Some women with horrendous menopausal symptoms can really benefit,” says the doctor. Ask, too, about relatively new medications that are non-hormonal. Heed your doctor on mammograms. Yes, the mammogram—an X-ray of the breast to spot cancer—is imperfect. Yes, organizations differ about how often women should be screened. And yes, recent publicity over the difficulty of reading mammograms in women with dense breast tissue has prompted some women to get exams they don’t need, as Dr. Nalitt notes. But don’t let all this unconsciously fuel procrastination. Decide with your physician what screening schedule makes sense for you, and stick to it. Fight stress incontinence—and embarrassment! Extra-frequent urination or the little leaks that happen when you laugh or sneeze may never be your favorite topic of conversation. But this problem—stress incontinence—won’t shock your doctor. It’s common among older moms who’ve had vaginal rather than cesarean deliveries. “There’s a lot we can do for it,” says Dr. Nalitt. Kegel exercises can help, as can new medications and some devices available over the counter, she says.

power food

the promise of

red pepper

ITs spicy cousins may win more fame, but this sweet-tasting veggie is packed with disease-fighting nutrients. IN culinary terms, the red bell pepper is a vegetable, but botanically it’s actually a fruit—just like tomatoes. No matter. Whichever bin you drop it in, you’ve got a nutritional superfood. In fact, red peppers are some of the most nutrient-dense vegetables you can eat, boasting 30 different antioxidants, which protect the body from damage caused by free radicals.

Power up One medium red pepper provides a hefty 253 percent of your daily value of vitamin C and 74 percent of vitamin A. It’s also a very good source of B6 (17 percent), folic acid (14 percent) and fiber (10 percent). And it’s high (second only to tomatoes) in the antioxidant lycopene, which can help prevent cardiovascular disease, lower your risk of certain types of cancer and lessen the likelihood of chronic inflammation. Red peppers are potent when it comes to eye health too: They’re rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, which combat macular degeneration. Added bonus: One medium red pepper contains just 37 calories, making it an ideal snack for waist-watchers.

Buy • store • serve Choose red peppers with deep color, taut skin and stems that look green and fresh. They should feel heavy for their size and firm enough so that they only “give” slightly to a small amount of pressure. If you’ll be eating your peppers in a day or two, there’s no need to refrigerate them. Beyond that, unwashed peppers will keep in the fridge for 7–10 days; wrap them in a damp paper towel. Options for incorporating red peppers into your daily diet are limited only by your creativity: Add finely chopped pepper to soups, stews and tuna or chicken salad; toss sliced pepper into stir-fries and green salads; dip slices into hummus or low-fat ranch dressing for a healthful snack or appetizer.

Did You Know? Bell peppers come in a palette of colors—green, yellow, orange, red—and the difference in their hue is a matter of maturity. Spicycrunchy green peppers are harvested before they are fully ripe. When left on the vine, they usually turn yelloworange and then red. Since red peppers spend more time on the vine before being picked, they’re sweeter, have a higher nutritional content and are more expensive. —michael ardizzone

Inspired by ingredients, Chef Costantino re-energizes Italian specialties based on available ingredients, crafting signature dishes daily based on his creative mood. For the summer season, Chef Costantino focuses on fresh fruits incorporating arugula and watermelon salads onto the menu and strawberry glazes for fish, using only the finest ingredients sourced from local farms and butchers, and imports from Italy. You can see him preparing his works of art in videos posted on his own Facebook page where he shares numerous Cucina Calandra’s specials. “A recipe has no soul,” adds Chef Costantino, a graduate of the Culinary Art Institute of Italy in Salerno, and a professional chef for over three decades. “You as the cook must bring soul to the recipe.” He imports ingredients directly from Italy since he knows the best places to contact after having had his own successful restaurant there for 17 years before coming to the U.S. Cucina Calandra is part of the Calandra Family’s many restaurants, bakeries, and own line of olive oil, coffee, wines, marinara sauce and more. Cucina Calandra’s family-friendly atmosphere centers on Southern Italian cooking with inspiration from Northern regions. Adjacent to the main dining room is the Executive Lounge, an intimate dining space offering the same menu as Cucina Calandra. No matter which dining room you choose, Chef Costantino’s goal is to thrill you with fabulous, fresh Italian food that will leave you hungry for more.

you can count on toronto to be clean, safe and orderly— now it’s surprisingly hip too! By Rita Guarna

Tuhrrono, eh? That’s what locals say on hearing that

This page, top, rise and shine in a deluxe lake-view suite, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows. Above, TOCA’s glass-enclosed cheese cave houses upwards of 200 varieties, many of which are local. Opposite, clockwise from top, seek serenity at the hotel’s tucked-away salt-water pool and relaxation lounge at Spa My Blend by Clarins. The open-concept kitchen at TOCA allows for a front-row seat to a savory show. Let sommelier Taylor Thompson help you choose one of the 50-plus wines by the glass, many of which are from vineyards in the Niagara region.

in recent years their modest city, long known for cleanliness, tolerance and safety, has become a hip hotspot—stylish and cosmopolitan. (For those who don’t speak Canadian, that’s a colloquial rendition of the name of the city followed by the trademark interjection of the Great White North.) There’s no better place to witness that evolution than at the Ritz-Carlton, a hotel that’s a veritable poster child for genteel sophistication. Mixing the brand’s famous service and style with native flourishes gives the R-C a unique appeal. Bronze maple leaves are embedded on the lobby floor, and more than 450 pieces by Canadian artists are displayed in guest rooms and public areas. Gorgeous, one-of-a-kind chandeliers by Jeff Goodman, a native son, cast a welcoming glow on the lobby area. Some 263 rooms feature a full-length wall of windows overlooking Lake Ontario or the city, tasteful décor (think subdued gold tones, grass-cloth wallpaper and comfy, contemporary furniture), plump bedding and pillows. Huge bathrooms with heated marble floors and a TV embedded in the mirror provide the perfect excuse for morning dawdling. If you’re a club-level guest, one assigned to rooms on floors 18–20, you’ll check in privately at the lounge on the 20th floor, where you’ll be assigned a personal concierge. There too you’ll find complimentary food and drinks all through the day. We found ourselves stopping by several times during our visit for fresh fruit, just-baked goodies and Starbucks in the morning; cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before dinner; and dessert and a nightcap in the evening. The staff even saved the day by offering to stir up a Bloody Caesar—a Canadian concoction of vodka, Clamato juice, hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce served with ice in a celery salt-rimmed glass—when I realized I’d forgotten to try one. Make time for a meal at TOCA, where a staff trained by consulting chef Oliver Glowig (when in Rome, check out his eponymous Michelin two-star eatery) serves up Italian cuisine that combines foods from that nation with locally sourced ingredients. There’s a friendly ruckus at this restaurant weekend nights, but the acoustics let you take it all in good fun, and the semi-circular banquettes ensure privacy. (George Clooney and Brad Pitt were spotted here during the Toronto International Film Festival.) If you’re more of an exhibitionist, there’s a chef’s table in one of the kitchen’s nooks. And the glass-encased cheese cave beckons diners to get a look at (and whiff of) a rotating selection of 200-plus cheeses from around the world (a

Valencia goat cheese was scrumptious), though most of them are local. (Maple syrupand-whisky-infused cheddar? This is Canada, after all; and it’s good!) You can’t leave the city without tasting Toronto’s signature dish: peameal bacon on a bun. Basically, it’s cured, trimmed, boneless pork loin rolled in ground yellow peas or cornmeal. Purists insist on eating it sans condiments, but others add mustard or ketchup for an extra zing. Even if you don’t believe the early bird catches the worm, do get an early start exploring the city by heading to the St. Lawrence Market (you can get peameal bacon here), ranked the world’s best by National Geographic. Here you’ll score fresh fruits and meats and locally made handicrafts. Also worth seeing is Kensington Market, really a bustling, bohemian neighborhood with cool cafes and stands selling organic everything. It’s Toronto’s tree-lined neighborhoods, a rich patchwork of diverse cultures that reflect the large immigrant population (it’s the second most immigrant-rich city in the world after Miami), that make the city feel like a string of villages, each with its own character. In addition to Chinese, Greeks, Italians and Portugese, there are large numbers of Indians, Pakistanis and West Indians adding to the melting pot. Hit the heights by taking the iconic CN Tower’s glass-bottom elevator more than a thousand feet up. Then change elevators and zoom up another 465 feet for stunning views of Lake Ontario. On a clear day, you can see Rochester. Not quite so high up is the dramatically curving sculptural staircase that rises through a glass ceiling from the second floor to the fifth floor of the Art Gallery of Ontario, the brainchild of celebrity architect and Torontonian Frank Gehry. And the Distillery District, a well-preserved Victorian industrial site where half of Ontario’s spirits were produced in the 1870s, is now home to high-end boutiques, galleries and bistros plus beer and sake breweries. All that exploring might make you yearn for some pampering. (It did me.) Ah, the spa at the Ritz-Carlton. Called Spa My Blend by Clarins, it’s a restorative sanctuary that blends seamlessly with the happenings downtown courtesy of floor-to-ceiling windows offering cityscapes. The locker room features digital key codes (bye-bye, telephone-cord wristlets), and the “relaxation lounge,” where I waited for my therapist, boasts oversize chaises, a tea-bar full of exotic teas and a “tester” station of Clarins products. When the 90-minute Floating on a Cloud treatment started with a salt-and-sugar scrub for my tired tootsies, the perfectionist in me inwardly shouted hooray. Soon after, Salvatore, an architect-turned-massagetherapist, gently but firmly untangled the knot in the left side of my cramped neck. The treatment was so relaxing, in fact, that I found myself drifting off to sleep. Thankfully, I only dozed for a few minutes—I wanted to savor every moment of this pampering. And who says all spa products are alike? I swear my skin felt nourished for the next few days. Come to think of it, the rest of me felt nourished too. Tuhrrono, eh? Who knew?
