Looking forward to a new year
With the flip of the final calendar page comes the promises of the new year, and there is an abundance to look forward to in 2017. Most of us create a list of resolutions to follow— beginning January 1, we vow to lead better lives, break bad habits, make wiser decisions and live life to the fullest. We are hopeful that everyone strives to achieve one or more health-oriented goals that, when accomplished, result in a positive lifestyle change. Turn to page 22 for guidance while crafting your health objectives. Vanessa Trespalacios, M.D., an internal medicine specialist at Barnabas Health Medical Group, offers advice on where to start and how to successfully reach your goals. One of the most important tips is to see your doctor regularly and stay up-to-date with your health exams—this includes but is not limited to breast screenings for women and prostate exams for men. There are plenty of changes in store for Saint Barnabas Medical Center in 2017, and we are eagerly awaiting the grand opening of the Cooperman Family Pavilion. This will be the cornerstone of the Livingston campus, with a world-class Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, new perioperative surgical suite, state-of-the-art nursing units and other modern and expansive outpatient testing areas. Though we look forward to all that awaits in the coming year, we would be remiss not to recall what took place at Saint Barnabas over the past 12 months. On page 28, we look back at a variety of events, including fundraisers and gatherings to commemorate watermarks in the construction of the Cooperman Family Pavilion. Each of the programs brought members of the medical community together with the people it serves, their families and friends. Also in this issue of Morris/Essex Health & Life you will find articles explaining how today’s clinical trials at Saint Barnabas Medical Center help future patients receive the latest treatment options (page 25), and how you can avoid burn injuries all year round but particularly in the winter—the most common time of the year when they occur (page 26). We hope you enjoy these and the other articles in this edition. We wish you and your families good health and a happy holiday season.

A TIME TO CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS ARE here, and I’m ready to celebrate with family and friends and give thanks. In this issue of Morris/Essex Health & Life, we chat with New Jersey native Daphne Oz, who talks about growing up here and life on The Chew. She dishes on those topics, plus motherhood and even shares two special holiday recipes, starting on page 32. If you find a stocking stuffed with the chic hair accessories on page 16 or a pair of the gloves featured on page 18, someone obviously thinks you were extra nice this year. Also sure to please? The fashions starting on page 36 and the charming jewelry featured on pages 42 and 44. And if you’re looking for a holiday cocktail, turn to page 55 and give the aptly named Poinsettia a try. For me, holiday cheer includes gratitude too. I’d like to offer my thanks to our dedicated Morris/Essex Health & Life staff and to you, our wonderful readers and advertisers. Without all of you, this magazine wouldn’t be the success it is today. All of us at Morris/Essex Health & Life wish you and those nearest and dearest a wonderful holiday season.

Paid Advertisement A Bronx Tale at Paper Mill Playhouse, the Veteran’s Memorial at High Point State Park, Guided Tours at the Morris Museum and Brunch at The Jefferson House Restaurant “There are so many things to see and do around here,” begins Janeth. “We are just getting started.” Adds her friend and Morris Museum neighbor, Tillie, “Some of our favorite outings so far – A Bronx Tale at Paper Mill Playhouse, the Veteran’s Memorial at High Point State Park, guided tours at the Morris Museum and brunch at The Jefferson House Restaurant. The waterfront view and the live music made that a great day.” “Many residents are very connected to the area,” explains Sarah Martin, Vibrant Living Director. “The bus is always full and residents wear us out. “Liberty Science Center is an outing we are looking forward to later this month,” she added.
Making a Difference in the Lives of Others Is Important to Us
“It is so gratifying to make a difference in the lives of these animals,” explains Doris. “Giving back is meaningful and makes us feel great.” By combining peanut butter, applesauce, chicken broth and f lour, residents carefully mix, roll, cut and bake nutritious dog biscuits. They then deliver the homemade treats – shaped like dogs, dog houses, dog bones and dog paws – to Eleventh Hour Rescue, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing and caring for unwanted dogs and cats. There they interact, feed and play with the animals. Doris invites you to give what you can to Eleventh Hour Rescue by visiting their website at www. ehrdogs.org. Pursuing passions and making a difference in the community is important to us.

Services are available when a resident needs or wants them. “Listening to residents and their families is imperative,” explains Besarta. “My team and I are dedicated to assuring an outstanding resident experience and are committed to exceptional service and care for every resident.”

This makes scents
Isn’t it a shame that the perfume you searched high and low for wears off in a matter of hours? Yes, we know all about the laws of evaporation, but it would be ideal if the perfect scent could last longer. We’ve found a solution: FragranceLock is an unscented finishing spray that’s applied after you spritz on your favorite perfume or cologne. When the spray dries, it creates a breathable net of sorts that “locks” the fragrance against the skin and slows the evaporation rate. The result is a scent that lasts more than twice as long. “It really works,” reports Morris/Essex Health & Life Editor in Chief Rita Guarna. “No more will I lament my scent not lasting.”

Book it!
Let’s face it, technology has transformed the way we read. (We’re looking at you, smartphones, tablets and e-readers!) Vanishing are paper books and periodicals, and disappearing with them are the big-name stores that raised previous generations of bookworms. But Morris and Essex counties are home to a handful of independent and used bookstores that have bucked that trend. They have plenty of titles, and they’re a source for great holiday gifts too. Here are some of our favorite places: The Chatham Bookseller (8 Green Village Rd., Madison, 973.822.1361; chathambookseller.com): Book lovers beware: You’ll spend hours upon hours at this quaint shop, where the shelves are overflowing with classic, hard-to-find, used and rare titles. Can’t find what you want? Just ask the staff—they know exactly where your next read is located. Montclair Book Center (221 Glenridge Ave., Montclair, 973.783.3630; montclairbookcenter.com): The spacious store in the heart of Montclair resembles an old library, with stacks filled with old and new titles for all ages. If you’d rather relax with good music, the center also features a vintage record store with thousands of albums on vinyl and CD. Old Book Shop (4 John St., Morristown, 973.538.1210): In addition to best sellers, old and rare hardcovers and paperbacks, the Old Book Shop has plenty of hidden treasures. Lose yourself browsing old magazines, vintage postcards and other collectibles. Words (179 Maplewood Ave., Maplewood, 973.763.9500; wordsbookstore.com): Readers of all ages will fall in love with this quaint shop, which offers new titles, author signings, activities for children and parents, and much more!
Right on schedule So you’ve committed to your resolution to shed a few pounds and get healthy in the new year, but there’s one problem: Your schedule doesn’t allow you time to hit the gym. If you fall into that category, a 24-hour fitness center might be your answer—they’re open for the lunch crowd, night owls and early risers. Here are some in your area: The 24 Hour Gym (141 Rt. 46 East, Budd Lake, 973.426.0103; the24hourgym.com): Personal training, free weights, strength-training equipment, cardio theater. Anytime Fitness (1004 Tabor Rd., Morris Plains, 973.998.6300; anytimefitness.com): Personal training, free weights, strength-training and cardio equipment. Ironbound Fitness (115 Ferry St., Newark, 973.732.5088; newarksironboundfitness.com): Fitness classes, personal training, free weights, strength-training and cardio equipment. Powerhouse Gym (465 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield, 973.743.7900; powerhousegym.com): Fitness classes, personal training, free weights, strength-training and cardio equipment, spinning studio, child care center, pro shop.
Find out by phone Headed to downtown Millburn for some holiday shopping? There’s an app for that. The Downtown Millburn Development Alliance (DMDA) has launched a new smartphone app to help shoppers connect with business owners. Called Close.By/ Millburn, it gives users up-to-date information about sales, special events, restaurant specials and even helps you snag a parking spot. iPhone users can download the free app at the iTunes store, while those with an Android phone can download it through the DMDA website (downtownmillburn.org).
A taste of Cuba
Craving Cuban cuisine? In North Jersey, a hub of diverse eateries, one’s quest to find a Cuban restaurant might lead to Nutley. Cubanelle Restaurant, which opened this past fall, boasts eclectic fare that’s sure to delight those with a discerning palate. The imaginative menu is a perfect mesh of flavors from Cuba and Latin America, and it’s conceived by celebrity chef Alex Garcia (a Culinary Institute of America alum and former host of Food Network’s Melting Pot). Select from the chef’s signature appetizers and trendy tapas (sausage-stuffed Spanish peppers or veal sausage, anyone?) or choose dishes for the entire table to share. But don’t fill up on starters; there are dozens of chef specials, flatbread sandwiches and mixed grill platters to satisfy anyone. Cuban culture revolves around family and being social, so it’s not surprising that Cubanelle is a hot spot for private parties. They’ll even arrange professional musicians and dancers for your event or set up salsa lessons and cigar-rolling demonstrations for your guests. “Start with small goals, something as little as committing to lifting your legs while sitting on a chair or punching an imaginary punching bag for 10 minutes,” —Vanessa Trespalacios, M.D. Every New Year, many of us resolve to improve our health in some form or another. Sadly, many of us fail— mainly because we set goals that are too difficult to reach. It’s smarter to set small, easily attainable goals, says Vanessa Trespalacios, M.D., an internal medicine specialist at Barnabas Health Medical Group. She suggests the following:
The flu vaccine is especially important for those who are immune compromised, who have a chronic illness, pregnant women, and adults over 65, who have a higher risk for severe flu complications, including death. If you haven’t gotten yours yet this year, it’s not too late. Flu season can run into March and April, so get one now.
Get a primary care physician (PCP). If you don’t already have one, establish a relationship with a primary care doctor. “So many people don’t see a PCP until an arbitrary age, but you really should have one throughout your life,” Dr. Trespalacios says. “A PCP behaves like a quarterback on your health care team, does all the preventative services you need and sees you as a whole person instead of in pieces, like a cardiologist or an ob/gyn.” Once you do…
Don’t diet. If you are looking to lose weight, a restrictive diet is the worst way to do it, according to Dr. Trespalacios. “I tell my patients, don’t think of diets,” she says. “A diet has a start and an end, and you can cheat.” Instead, think of it as making a lifestyle change. As it implies, this is a change that will carry you forward for the rest of your life. “You fall off a diet, but you don’t fall off a lifestyle change.” Such as…
See your doctor regularly. “It’s called an ‘annual exam’ for a reason,” Dr. Trespalacios says. Seeing a doctor annually keeps you up to date with all the vaccinations and screening tests you need based on your age, gender and health history. Such testing can find issues early, when they are generally easiest to treat. Tests like blood pressure and cholesterol screening beginning in your 20s to mammograms, prostate exams, colonoscopies and bone density scans for adults in their 40s, 50s and 60s can help prevent more serious health problems in the future. Get a flu shot. Despite all the evidence proving how effective this vaccine is, too many people opt against getting it because of myths or misunderstandings, she says. “The injection is a dead virus, so it cannot cause the flu. You may get an immune response, which is what you want, and that is over within 48 hours. Then you have immunity to the real flu.”
Increase your exercise quotient. Note carefully—this does not mean training for a marathon or even joining a gym. It means doing a little bit more than you are doing now. “Start with small goals, for example, something as little as committing to lifting your legs while sitting on a chair or punching an imaginary punching bag for 10 minutes is a great start for a person who cannot walk,” she says. Walking is a great exercise, and in cold weather walk up and down your stairs. “Be creative,” she says. The goal is to exercise for a minimum of two hours a week. Eat real food. The biggest cause of obesity is processed foods and sodas. “Your body is like your car, so take care of it with good, efficient fuel that doesn’t clog all your parts,” she says. Make small changes. Eat one more vegetable serving a week. Choose “brown” over “white”— brown breads, rice, potatoes and even sugar are healthier than the white varieties. And replace sodas and other soft drinks with water.
Eat more often. You read that right. “Eat five to six smaller meals a day, eating every three to four hours,” Dr. Trespalacios recommends. That helps keep blood sugar levels stable Vanessa Trespalacios, M.D. throughout the day, prevents hunger pangs and overeating, maintains energy and keeps your metabolism running efficiently. If you typically don’t like to eat breakfast, split it in two—eat a small cup of yogurt or some fruit early, then eat a little more later. Do the same with lunch. Drink more water. “We all drink much less water than we need,” Dr. Trespalacios says. Dehydration is the primary cause of fatigue, headaches, constipation and dizziness. Water is an easy fix. “The general calculation is to drink about 50 percent of your body weight in ounces,” she says. Get your ZZZs. Our bodies generally need six to eight hours of sleep a night to allow our brain and body to rest and rewire itself. Lack of sleep has been linked to depression, weight gain, heart disease and a host of other health issues. “And if you are sleep-deprived, you are more likely to make unhealthy choices,” Dr. Trespalacios adds. Care for you. Take time for yourself. Whatever you like to do—walk, meditate, read, listen to music—do it. Stress is linked to many health problems, from depression to cancer, which is why Dr. Trespalacios stresses that “self-care is very important.”

Radiation oncologist returns, gives back to the community that raised him.
Brijal Desai, M.D.
Though Brijal Desai, M.D., radiation oncologist, started working at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in September, it wasn’t his first time in the hospital. “I was born at Saint Barnabas,” says Dr. Desai. Giving back to the community in which he was raised played a large part when he accepted his new position. His family still lives in the area, but Dr. Desai says the hospital is not what it was when he was born there. It has grown into a major medical center over the years. “Saint Barnabas’ reputation as a high-quality medical center and RWJ’s academic activity was a good fit for me,” he says. “Getting to work with talented colleagues who bring academic training to the community is a great draw for physicians of my generation.”
Dr. Desai was trained in radiation oncology at the University of Pennsylvania and Northwestern University. He was drawn to the field for several reasons. “I thought it had the most cutting-edge technology, and treatments are evolving rapidly,” he says. He focuses on cancers of the lung, brain and head and neck. “We are discovering newer and more effective ways to treat patients every day.” He cites Saint Barnabas’ CyberKnife, a state-of-the-art radiation system that delivers higher doses in smaller, more targeted areas. “We used to treat all tumors,” he says. “Now we can treat some with shorter courses of radiation, sometimes with a single dose.”
He also wants to help patients who are facing serious diseases. “We are serving patients at a critical time in their lives,” he says. “They are in very difficult and complicated situations, and we can do a great service for them.” New technologies make it easier to tailor treatments to each patient. “Each patient has a unique background and history, and the field has innovated more personalized approaches to care,” he says. And he is especially grateful to be able bring his talents back home. “I feel responsible to treat my patients as if they were a family member or a good friend,” he says. “Every situation is different, but they all have people who love them, and my job and responsibility is to treat them in the most compassionate way I can.”

Cancer care on trial Today’s clinical trials help future patients receive the latest treatment options.
Cancer care has progressed enormously over the past few years, thanks in large part to clinical trials that study new treatments. Clinical trials are research studies designed to test if and how well new approaches work. Each study focuses on specific questions—how big a dose is needed, what side effects develop, is the new treatment significantly better than what is already available—as it tries to find science-based answers in order to better prevent, screen for, diagnose, or treat diseases like cancer. For more than 20 years, the Cancer Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center has been participating in all manners of clinical trials in order to offer patients access to innovative, cuttingedge, investigational cancer treatments. The Cancer Center has partnered with TRIO-UCLA (Translational Research In Oncology-US, Inc.), a notfor-profit clinical research organization, in an effort to expand its clinical trial offerings. Saint Barnabas is the first Cancer Center in the tri-state area to partner with the TRIO-UCLA Network. The center is currently participating with trials in breast, head and neck, lung, myeloma, melanoma and other cancers. “Our work participating in these trials not only helps further the science behind treatments, it offers our patients the options they can’t find elsewhere,” says Miguel Conde, director, Oncology Clinical Trials, The Cancer Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Clinical studies can be sponsored, or funded, by drug companies, academic medical centers, medical organizations or Federal agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Health care providers also sponsor and conduct clinical research. Each trial has a protocol, or action Miguel Conde, M.D. plan, that describes what the study
hopes to learn, how it will be conducted and why each part of it is necessary. Participants vary from study to study; some studies need subjects with a certain disease, others need healthy people, still others focus on just men or just women. “When new patients come to the hospital, we look at their diagnosis and see if we have a trial they are eligible for,” says Dr. Conde. Members of the Clinical Trials team meet with the patient and his or her doctor to discuss the risks and benefits of entering the trial. It is strictly voluntary, Dr. Conde says.

Protect against the burn We know it as the season of giving, but winter is also tops for burn accidents. Here’s how to stay safe.
Michael A. Marano, M.D.
26
The holidays and new year are a happy time for most of us, but it can also be a hectic time for those who work at The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. “Winter is our busiest season,” says Michael A. Marano, M.D., the center’s medical director. Burns caused by holiday lights and decorations, faulty heaters and other things— both seasonal and not—send patients to The Burn Center for treatment. The main reason people get burned is because “they are trying to stay warm,” says Dr. Marano, whose center treats upwards of 350 inpatients and 6,000 outpatients a year. Whether it’s from an older heating system in an older building or space heater
in a newer one, these systems can burn by contact, especially children, the aged or the cognitively impaired who aren’t aware of the danger. “This is what alarms me the most,” Dr. Marano says. He is also concerned about holiday or seasonal lights. “Any religious or ethnic background, we see them all have fires,” he says. “Anything that uses candles can be especially dangerous.” Other causes include things that can go wrong any time of year. Devices powered by lithium ion batteries, like cellphones and electronic cigarettes, can burst into flame unexpectedly. Dr. Marano suggests everyone take care to prevent burns this winter.

11/21/16 1:18 PM
Staying warm If you own your home, have your heating system checked annually, Dr. Marano recommends. If you rent, make sure your building superintendent is doing the same. When using a portable space heater, read the directions carefully and make sure you know how to use it safely. Do not place it where a child or pet could knock it over. Keep newspapers, magazines and flammable materials like curtains, clothes or bedding at least three feet away from any heat source. If you have a fireplace, have the chimney professionally cleaned every year and keep it covered with a screen to keep sparks in. Never burn paper or other non-firewood materials in the fireplace, as embers can escape. Never leave a fire burning unattended and make sure a fire is completely extinguished before leaving the house or going to bed.
Electrical Appliances Check to make sure all your electrical appliances are in good condition and that cords or plugs are not loose of frayed. Replace or repair any appliances that spark, smell unusual or overheat. Do not overload outlets with plugs, and don’t run electrical wires under rugs. And take special care to protect children. Kids should not use any electrical devices without supervision, as they “can bite cords and burn their mouths,” Dr. Marano says. Cover unused outlets with plastic safety covers if you have toddlers or young children—little fingers can get burned if they touch the inside of the outlets. Kitchen and Candles Cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the United States, and the holidays are an especially busy time in most kitchens. Younger children are more likely to be burned by scalding hot liquids or steam, so always supervise little ones when they are in the kitchen. Turn pot handles in, so kids can’t accidentally knock them over. According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), the number of fires started by candles nearly doubles during the month of December. Whether they are for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or just because they look and smell wonderful, never forget that candles are in fact fire, Dr. Marano says. Take care to keep them out of reach of children and pets and far away from curtains and furniture. Candles should never be left unattended and be placed in sturdy holders that won’t tip over. Also extinguish them thoroughly before leaving the room. Speaking of holidays, if you decorate with a real Christmas tree, water it every day. A dried-out tree strung with hot lights or candles can ignite. Check all lights and lighted window ornaments for worn or frayed cords and replace any that are not in perfect condition. Overall Safety Almost 60 percent of all fatal residential fires occur in homes that don’t have smoke alarms, and a working smoke alarm in the house reduces the risk of dying in a fire by half. Install one on every level of your home and in each bedroom. Test them every month. Have a fire extinguisher on each floor and in the kitchen. And be sure you know how to use it. Families should create and practice a fire escape plan—everyone living in the home should know at least two ways out of every room and where to meet once they are outside. Finally, use common sense. “Smoking in bed is a bad idea,” Dr. Marano says. Take care when consuming alcohol or other drugs, which can impair judgment. And monitor elderly loved ones. “They are at risk for getting burned in the tub or in a kitchen fire, so watch after grandma and grandpa,” he says.

Pulling the trigger Physical therapists trained in new methods to treat musculoskeletal disorders. When physical therapists are treating chronic pain or impaired movement, they rely on a host of therapies, from electric stimulation and massage to stretching and strength training. The physical therapists at Saint Barnabas Medical Center are trained in a new method to treat musculoskeletal disorders. It is known by two names: trigger point therapy or dry needling. As the latter implies, this therapy involves inserting sterilized, thin-filament needles into the patient’s muscle or other soft tissue. Specifically, the physical therapist targets a “trigger point”—a knot in the tissue, caused by trauma, overuse, poor posture or simply lifting something heavy. This knot is painful in itself, and it may cause pain that radiates out to other parts of the body, from the back down the leg, for example, or from the neck to the head. The needle causes a biochemical reaction in the knot that relaxes it, says Charlie Curtis, MS, PT, DPT, Cert MDT, director of outpatient rehabilitation services at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. “We look for a twitch response, which indicates that the reaction takes place,” he says. “The muscle twitches, and the synapses between the nerves are flooded with neurochemicals that break down the problem.” It causes a bit of discomfort at first, but then, “you feel the pain is gone.”
If this sounds a lot like acupuncture, it is—and it’s not. “We use similar tools but different techniques,” Curtis says. Acupuncture needles are inserted into the body based on ancient concepts of body patterns called meridians to release energy, called Qi (pronounced chee). Trigger point therapy is based on modern scientific study of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Research has shown that the therapy does control pain and reduce muscle tension and dysfunction. Once the trigger point has been resolved—it can take one or several treatments—the therapist can use more traditional treatments like stretching and strength training to further the rehabilitation process. Curtis says that, along with treating chronic pain, it is useful in treating migraine headaches, joint pain, spinal disc problems, tendonitis, TMJ, carpal tunnel syndrome, computer-related disorders due to poor posture, pelvic pain and pelvic floor issues. But, it’s not for everyone— pregnant women in their first trimester, those with metal allergies or taking blood thinners and some other patients should not use this treatment. For those who can, though, Curtis and all of Saint Barnabas’ 18 physical therapists are now certified to offer it. “It’s another tool in our arsenal to give our patients the latest options,” he says.

The wisdom of
Health-minded like her doctor dad, author and TV personality Daphne Oz adds her own dollop of culinary adventure.
Oz Photograph by Mike Garten for Good Housekeeping

“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” It’s a phrase that comes to mind after meeting northern New Jersey native Daphne Oz, 30, a prolific food author and co-host of TV’s The Chew. And that’s fine with her—it means she’s already got you thinking about a food that’s both healthy and fun. Daphne is the daughter of renowned cardiologist Mehmet (“Dr. Oz”), and like her father she spreads the gospel of good health. Eating right is key, of course, but to her that means foods that aren’t just beneficial, but enjoyable too. “I refuse to eat food that is only fuel,” says Daphne. The child of two published authors—mom Lisa is also a producer/actress—Daphne broke into print herself as a student at Princeton University in 2006 with The Dorm Room Diet, a book designed to help students avoid putting on the “freshman 15.” She scored another best seller in 2013 with Relish: An Adventure in Food, Style, and Everyday Fun, which combined recipes with career counsel, relationship tips and personal experiences. This fall she’s out with a new volume, The Happy Cook: 125 Recipes for Eating Every Day Like It’s the Weekend, which features everything from kale-and-plum salad to coconut-mango pancakes. Daphne has made guest appearances on her dad’s The Dr. Oz Show—naturally—but also pops up on Good Morning America, The View, Fox & Friends, Good Day New York and The Rachael Ray Show. A frequent health lecturer and motivational speaker, she’s active with HealthCorps, a nonprofit organization she helped to

establish that advises teens on nutrition, exercise, body image and stress. But her two favorite topics these days are Philomena (almost 3) and Jovan (age 2)— her kids. They kept popping up when Morris/Essex Health & Life caught up with her recently for a wide-ranging chat—read on for more. When you visit your parents in New Jersey, do you stay at their home? Yes! It’s the best. My kids are in paradise when they get to see their grandparents. I’m there almost every weekend. Is there anything you’ve learned from your parents that you hope to pass on to your children? “Work hard and have fun!” What do you remember from your days attending school in northern New Jersey? Amazing teachers—and lots of work. We took great field trips to study the Hudson River and cared for a “baby egg,” which is very different from having actual babies, as it turns out. I remember spending a couple of months researching a history project in which we had to act as a historical figure for a day. I was Cleopatra! What was New Jersey like as a place to grow up? The best of both worlds. My parents chose it because of its proximity to my dad’s work at Columbia Presbyterian in New York. They wanted to be near the city but also give their kids space and a more laid-back growing-up experience. Which three words best describe you? Wife, mother, talker. What do you love most about motherhood? Morning cuddles and chatterbugs. My kids wake up extra talkative and loving in the mornings. I also love bedtime stories and hearing the crazy things that come out of our daughter Philomena’s mouth— she’s hysterical. Given your hectic schedule, how do you achieve a work-family balance? My sense of balance is always being recalibrated. Some weeks I feel like I’m working nonstop and missing time with my kids and husband. Other weeks I get to spend all day with them and take a break from the grind. The trick is to enjoy what you’re doing in that moment. I try to get into
my home kitchen most days, even if it’s just for 15 to 30 minutes. Cooking relaxes me, and it lets me come back to center in a rewarding way. As a writer and speaker on health, what’s your own big health concern? Just trying to lose baby weight, slowly but surely. Food and cooking always feel like a celebration to me, and my goal is to find the balance where I can enjoy my food and get back to feeling strong in my body too. It’s a process. I follow my two-bite rule on The Chew: the first bite is just to check out all the flavors going on. The second is to really indulge. What are your nutritional staples— and your guilty pleasures? My kids and I have smoothies in the mornings as an insurance policy for the rest of the day. Theirs has yogurt, banana, avocado and spinach—sometimes I’ll add foods with essential fatty acids and vitamins C and D. Mine is a protein shake I blend up with all my vitamins and supplements. I keep fresh flavor boosters on hand to dress up simple meals—homemade pesto or chopped fresh herbs with lemon zest, olive oil and some nuts or grated garlic. I make big batches of lentils or quinoa on the weekends that I can throw into recipes all week long, and we have a lot of lean protein. My guilty pleasures are homemade cookie dough, brownies à la mode, French fries and pizza.
Try DAPHNE’s treats for the holidays Daphne Oz’s emphasis on healthy eating doesn’t rule out the occasional indulgence—especially during the holiday season. She shares two recipes her family favors. CORN PUDDING
“This one was given to us by one of my grandmother’s friends, and it’s pure decadence. Plan to make twice the recipe.” Ingredients
1 ( 8.5-oz. box) Jiffy corn muffin mix (or vegetarian equivalent) 1 can cream-style corn 1 can corn niblets, drained ½ cup butter, melted 2 eggs, beaten 1 cup sour cream Directions
Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Grease an 8-inch-by-10-inch pan with butter and pour in mixture. Bake at 350°F for 55–60 minutes. Serves 6. CHRISTMAS BUTTER COOKIES
Any foods you’ve banished from your life? No. I don’t rule things out because they become taboo and have control over you.
“Our traditional Christmas cookies. Perfect in every way!” Ingredients
What’s your exercise routine? These days, most of my working out is chasing my children around. But when I get to a workout class, I love DanceBody and Ballet Beautiful. I also love to find old Steve Ross yoga routines on YouTube. In a few words, what’s your new book’s mission? To give people confidence in the kitchen with recipes guaranteed to make them look good. What do you hope people remember about you and your TV show? I hope seeing how much fun we have helps people get comfortable in the kitchen. We always talk about how lucky we are—we get paid to eat delicious food and hang out with great friends!
Clockwise from top: Daphne shares a sweet moment with Philomena; showing off a tray of miniature pies; with her mother (and fellow author), Lisa; on the set of The Chew with her co-hosts (from left) Carla Hall, Mario Batali, Michael Symon and Clinton Kelly.
1 cup butter 1 cup, plus 1 Tb. sugar 1 large egg 1 tsp. baking powder 2 Tbs. orange juice 1 tsp. vanilla extract 2½ cups sifted flour Directions
Mix first six ingredients with electric mixer until fluffy. Gradually stir in flour by hand until combined. If you use a cookie press, don’t chill dough. Otherwise, wrap disks of dough in plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator at least two hours. Roll out dough to ¼-inch thick and cut shapes with your favorite cookie cutters. Bake at 350°F for 8–10 minutes. Watch cookies—when they are golden around the edges, they’re done! Makes 50 small cookies.

Rotary helps Master Grinding carve a slice of service for humanity at the local level AN INTERVIEW WITH
Rita Ambrosi, Sales & Marketing Manager WHY DID YOU JOIN ROTARY? About two months after my mother unexpectedly died, I was asked to join Rotary by our business’ lending office. I didn’t know what a Rotary club was or if I had the time to be part of the organization. Now I realize joining Rotary changed my life and my perspective, and it was one of the better decisions I’ve made in my life. Three years later, I am now President of the Denville Rotary, leading it through its celebratory 70th year. Rotary is a gift I gave myself and from that, I have been able to gift back so much more.
RITA AMBROSI Sales & Marketing Manager, Master Grinding and KnifeSpa.com
WHAT IS ROTARY? Rotary is one of the oldest, most respected service organizations in the world. It is one of the greatest forces for good in the world today and I’m very proud to be a Rotarian. Causes in our club include sponsoring families through Denville Social Services, sponsoring food drives, collecting and delivering school supplies for less fortunate children, helping returning vets, co-sponsoring monthly blood drives, giving out annual scholarships for our local high school seniors and operating Santa Land to bring Christmas to the children in our town. We donated almost $25,000 to various businesses who suffered crippling losses after Hurricane Irene. For 35 years, we’ve run the

Denville Rotary Street Fair, our main fundraiser held every year on the first Sunday in June. Our Rotary District 7470 has 1,200 members serving Morris, Essex, Sussex and Warren Counties.
WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING SERVICE YOU’VE BEEN PART OF WITH ROTARY? For the past few years, we have discreetly worked with St. Peter’s Orphanage in Denville to purchase the boys and young men who live there each a new pair of shoes. For many of them, it is the first pair of shoes they have ever owned.

The Gloria Foundation brings awareness to domestic abuse AN INTERVIEW WITH
Karen Arakelian, Founder WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO FOCUS ON DOMESTIC ABUSE? My late mother, Gloria, was a victim of domestic violence and I understand the embarrassment, shame and the low-self esteem of everyone involved. Every nine seconds a woman is beaten or abused. It’s hard to fix, but the first step is recognizing that it’s happening which is why I began the foundation in 2013.
HOW DO YOU RAISE MONEY? The foundation receives the profits from Design Consign, our upscale consignment store which is the philanthropic wing of my business. Our fundraisers include “A Night at the Waterside” at the Waterside restaurant in North Bergen raising $25,000 this past May to support the Jersey Battered Women’s Service, Morris Family Justice Center. Our “Taste of Italy” event in September at Design Consign featured live music under the stars with local Italian restaurants and vendors donating food, wine, vodka , caviar and cigars! We raised $15,000 for Partners for Women and Justice for their pro-bono legal work. We’ll add frequent smaller fundraisers and all proceeds go to local domestic violence organizations.
KAREN ARAKELIAN Founder, The Gloria Foundation and Owner, White House Designs for Life
WHAT IS YOUR GOAL FOR THE GLORIA FOUNDATION? Our mission is to bring awareness to domestic violence and help give women the tools they need to exit an abusive relationship. Our commitment includes our $100,000 pledge over five years to support The Morris Family Justice Center which offers victims protection and services to move forward. Our dream is to have a Family Justice Center in every county.
HOW CAN READERS HELP? Attend our fun events, become involved with our shop, or donate through our website on Giving Tuesday, November 29. Our board of directors is also seeking members. We put every dollar raised into supporting domestic violence victims and their families. If you have a heart for this very important cause please contact us.

Top New Jersey Dentist brings big smiles to local charities AN INTERVIEW WITH
Jay S. Schuster, D.D.S.
WHICH LOCAL PROGRAMS DO YOU SUPPORT? Giving back to charities that support children is important to me. I support Make-a-Wish New Jersey which grants lifetime wishes of terminally ill children, and, The Good Grief Family Crisis Counseling Center which teaches children and teens, young adults and surviving parents in our community how to cope in healthy, resilient ways when there is a family crisis. I also give to the local Morristown school systems including the football team and Youth Ministry Appalachian Trail’s annual trip. I support the Interfaith Food Pantry and Community Soup Kitchen serving Morris County. As a dentist, I feel strongly about supporting the American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association. WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GIVE BACK SO FREELY? People have supported me and my life is good. I’ve always felt that it was important to be kind and reciprocate by showing my appreciation through support. For the second year, I am inspired to support a patient who raises funds for the Free to Breathe Lung Cancer Walk, and I believe we all deserve to breathe clean air.

Renowned spine surgeon uses his talents to impact and encourage disadvantaged communities around the globe AN INTERVIEW WITH
Daveed D. Frazier, M.D. Medical Director WHAT INSPIRES YOUR PHILANTHROPY?
DAVEED D. FRAZIER M.D., Medical Director, New York City Spine Surgery PLLC
If everyone steps up and does just one thing, the world will be a much better place. I’m engaged in significant global and local nonprofit work and hope to have a positive impact on the people I’m fortunate enough to reach. I have the great fortune to have trained with and become one of the world’s top spinal surgeons and with that comes the responsibility to pay it forward.
WHAT TOUCHES YOU THE MOST ABOUT GIVING BACK? I’ve been in refugee camps in Africa, homeless shelters in NYC, have had dinner with Grammy-award winning musicians who don’t have a dime after losing everything in hurricane Katrina, have counseled child soldiers who have been forced to slaughter their families, have helped to feed paralyzed patients living with no resources, etc. What’s common about these and other experiences is that frequently those in need don’t ask for help and feel that their hardships are a fact of life. The humanity in seemingly desperate situations is inspiring and hopeful. In so many ways I receive more than I give.
WHERE DO YOU FOCUS YOUR CHARITABLE TIME? I’m on the boards of many non-profits. Three charities I devote most of my time to include FilmAid, bringing film and other media with life-saving information, relief and hope to refugees around the world; NuVasive Spine Foundation, providing life-changing spine surgery and training to local surgeons in disadvantaged communities across the globe; and the Jazz Foundation of America, which assists musicians with emergency funds, medical care and instruments so they can continue working.

Opening an account at BSSB becomes a significant act of kindness AN INTERVIEW WITH
Debra Cannariato, First Vice President IS THE BANK’S COMMUNITY ALLIANCE PROGRAM (CAP) TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? Everyone wins when they are involved with our award-winning CAP. The program formed in 2006 to reward non-profit organizations when their members or supporters bank at Boiling Springs. It costs nothing to join and it’s an easy way for a nonprofit to earn extra money. Donations are discreetly calculated based on a percentage of a supporter’s account balances, but not one penny comes out of a supporter’s account. We have nearly 400 non-profits enrolled throughout our 17 branch network with over 5,000 supporters for these organizations. TELL US ABOUT THE TELLER TRAINING PROGRAM YOU DEVELOPED FOR OASIS A HAVEN FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN? Through our involvement with Oasis, my colleague, Theresa O’Keefe, and I realized that there’s always a need for tellers so why not bring the necessary training to the young women who are in need and who want to find ways to break the cycle of poverty? We wanted to share our path to success with other women. In 2015, we began sponsoring the the American Bankers Association’s certificate program offered to Oasis clients.

power food
walnuts
Let’s Hear It For
Small but mighty, the antioxidant-loaded nut goes from bakery sideliner to varsity health player. Once dismissed as merely an optional ingredient to add crunch to baked goods, the walnut sat low in the nut pantheon. Now we know better. This tree nut, championed by the ancient Greeks for various medicinal purposes, is loaded with antioxidants, protein, omega-3 fatty acids and healthy fats. No wonder you can’t spell nutrition without “nut.” POWER UP Like other tree nuts, walnuts are high in protein (4 grams in 1 ounce), fiber (about 2 grams) and magnesium (45 milligrams). They’re also rich in various B vitamins, vitamin E, phosphorus and the insomniac’s best friend, melatonin. When it comes to heart health, walnuts have a clear advantage over other nuts, as they contain the highest concentration of polyphenols, a kind of antioxidant that may help reduce the risk of heart disease and prostate and breast cancers. Walnuts also contain a significant amount (2.5 grams in 1 ounce) of alpha linolenic acid, a plant-based
omega-3 fatty acid with inflammationbusting properties said to benefit heart and vascular health. BUY/STORE/SERVE Walnuts can be purchased both raw and roasted as well as shelled or unshelled. Shelled walnuts often still have their white skin, which has a bit of a bitter taste, but resist the temptation to remove it. That skin contains high levels of phenols, tannins and flavonoids—all antioxidants that benefit your body inside and out. Because of their high fat content, walnuts (and other nuts) can become rancid quickly, especially if stored in humid or hot spots. Nuts that have been roasted with oil, which increases the fat content, have an even shorter shelf life. It’s best to keep walnuts in the freezer or, if you plan to eat them within a month, in the refrigerator. Walnuts are most nutritious when enjoyed raw or dry-roasted and in small portions, as they are high in calories (185 calories per
ounce). They can also be added to trail mix or muesli, pulverized and made into a crust on fish or meat, or used to add texture to pastas, risottos and soups. You can also purchase walnut butter and walnut oil. Note, however, that like olive oil, walnut oil has a low smoke point, so some experts recommend enjoying it cold—on salads, for example—rather than cooking with it. And, of course, walnuts still have their place in brownies and banana bread. Did you know? The ancient Greeks used walnuts for medicinal purposes, believing the nuts could treat bad breath, dog bites, colic and even hair loss, says culinary history expert Andrew F. Smith. They called walnuts kayron, which means “head,” because of the resemblance the shell has to a human skull and the nut to a brain. —Liz Donovan

PEOPLE WHO AVOID DENTAL CARE because they fear the dentist may smile less and be perceived by others as unfriendly in social and professional situations. Once you love your smile, it will change your life. We love helping people regain control of their lives by giving them the ability to smile. As we get older, there are two absolutes: our hair starts to gray and our teeth become yellow. The most common request from our patients is for whiter teeth. It is amazing how whiter teeth can boost a patient’s confidence and make them enjoy smiling again. For more involved reconstructive procedures, such as composite bonding or porcelain veneers, we love to show patients what the possibilities are before we do anything permanent. Our patients’ smiles are our signatures so we want to ensure that they are completely happy. Dentistry is so different from years ago. Materials have improved, technologies have advanced and the results overall are much better. We can let a patient know within minutes how we can close spaces, correct misshapen teeth, and create a masterpiece smile. We treat our patients the way we would want to be treated, and we cater to anxious and fearful patients so we can give them the comfort and aesthetics they deserve. We do everything we can to make our patients look and feel great. From the pampering spa-like environment to advanced and pain-free technology, our family and cosmetic dental practice changes patient’s lives every day by creating healthy, dazzling smiles.

Having completed hundreds of hours of continuing education, Dr. Schuster also believes in educating his patients. He feels that informed patients benefit from the best results and that oral health education should start early. Metro Dental Associates uses environmentally-friendly dental materials like a water filtration system and restorative cosmetic products that are both BPA and mercury-free. Other examples of the practice’s dedication to patient safety are the use of digital x-rays to minimize exposure to radiation and laser detection of cavities.

PROMINENT IN THEIR FIELDS, Dr. Ira Goldberg and Dr. Raj Upadya have always pursued excellence and a commitment to professional improvement. The two met at a dental study club and began collaborating about a year ago, providing the highest quality possible to their patients in their respective areas of concentration. Dr. Upadya is one of few dentists in the Florham Park area who treats complex dental problems like broken or missing teeth, bite relationships and TMJ issues. He believes strongly in the motto, “Would I Do It On Me,” which remains the philosophy of the Dawson Academy, an organization dedicated to continuing education for dentists. Patients appreciate the fact that their dentists perform only treatments that are truly necessary and those that provide long-lasting benefits. Many of Dr. Upadya’s patients are physicians and dentists. His success in occlusion work can be life-changing. Dr. Goldberg has dedicated much of his professional time to becoming a sought-after implant practitioner. He has been practicing implant dentistry for more than 20 years and his patients often include other dentists and physicians. He also teaches implant technology to his peers and has an extensive list of positive Google reviews. Dr. Goldberg and Dr. Upadya work together to offer patients two experts under one roof. Dr. Goldberg practices weekly in Dr. Upadya’s office and provides all implant work, including placement, grafting and restoration in-house, eliminating the need for referrals. Both doctors practice general dentistry and offer full services. They believe that one thing in particular sets them apart from other dentists. Dr. Upadya says, “We are the Sherlock Holmes of dentistry,” concentrating on the “why” a condition started so that the chances of a repeated problem is decreased.
“After years of pain, research and spending my life savings on looking for a cure, Dr. Upadya was the one. Thank you for getting my life back on track.” –PATIENT TESTIMONIAL

The latest trends in Eyebrow Tattooing (Microblading)
Marie D. Barbuto, BSN, RN, CANS, CPCP Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist
BY NOW YOU PROBABLY HAVE heard about the newest craze in treating Hair Loss for Eyebrows! Endorsed by celebrities, promoted on social media sites, seen on TV, in magazines and broadcasted on the news is the latest technique called Microblading. Microblading (for lack of a better term does not use a blade) is a procedure where pigment is implanted into the skin one stroke at a time which resembles natural hair. Those with eyebrow hair loss associated with conditions such as alopecia, trichotillomania, chemotherapy, and scars from injury can easily regain their confidence in their appearance following this procedure. Also, those that need to use pencil or powder on their brows before leaving the house can now have the freedom to get up and go with perfect, face-framing brows and a more youthful look! Call for you complimentary consultation today!

2017 TRENDS
Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Forefront of Spinal Care HEARING THE WORDS “spinal surgery” or “fusion” would make most patients nervous. Today, the trend has moved towards less invasive, less painful outpatient spinal procedures with outcomes that exceed more traditional open spinal surgery, says Daveed D. Frazier, M.D., the medical director of New York City Spine Surgery PLLC, with offices in Morristown, NJ and NYC. Spinal fusion surgeries stabilize the spine and have historically been a large operation with certain consequences. New surgical techniques, such as MIS surgery (minimally invasive spine surgery), improve the results of lumbar fusions. MIS surgeries cause less pain, produce less trauma to tissues and tend to offer faster recovery time which often means patients can go home within hours after surgery. In addition, a patient’s outcome is equal or better to that of traditional open surgery. One of the revolutionary MIS techniques, called XLIF (extreme lateral interbody fusion), has changed the face of spinal surgery, says Dr. Frazier. During the XLIF procedure the lumbar spine is approached from the side through a small skin incision rather than the common and more invasive approach from the back or front of the spine. “This is one of the greatest advancements in three decades in spinal surgery,” Dr. Frazier says. Dr. Frazier recommends that patients research their doctor’s training and expertise in MIS procedures. “I encourage patients to make sure their physician is well trained and has the volume of cases to support their expertise,” he says. “A surgeon needs the depth of experience from performing open surgery in order to excel at MIS techniques.”
Daveed D. Frazier, M.D. New York City Spine Surgery PLLC will help you overcome or manage your spine condition so you don’t have to live in pain. Daveed D. Frazier, M.D. is the medical director of New York City Spine Surgery and for over 20 years he has specialized in non-surgical and minimally invasive surgical treatments for back/neck pain and spine-related disorders. Dr. Frazier is a Harvard-trained, board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon, a published author, the recipient of many top surgeon awards and has held academic appointments at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and New York’s SUNY Downstate among his many achievements. Younger-looking Vibrant Skin VOTED A NJ TOP DOC for more than a decade, Dr. Scott Spiro is constantly looking for innovative ways to improve the way his patients feel about themselves. The latest addition to his practice is a revolutionary treatment called HydraFacial MD. This non-invasive multi-step procedure provides immediate results with long-lasting benefits. The treatment is generally performed on the face but can also be performed on the neck, back and hands and can be repeated monthly, without pain, irritation or down time. Dr. Spiro states that he combines the benefits of a chemical peel with automatic extraction and vortex fusion exfoliation, along with a specialized method of delivering antioxidant and hyaluronic peptide-rich serums. All of these treatments are performed in one simultaneous procedure. HydraFacial MD can be described as a treatment that offers results between those provided with an IPL, and higher strength chemical peels. Fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, photo damage, signs of aging and oily congested skin are some of the conditions that can be improved with HydraFacial MD. Dr. Spiro also offers a full range of cosmetic procedures, from non-invasive treatments like the HydraFacial MD to surgical procedures for the breast, body and the face. Patient testimonials can be seen on his website, along with a celebratory attention to an impressive “case of the month.” Treat yourself with a personal appointment with Dr. Spiro. He has the expertise you need.
“Thank you for helping me get my confidence back, we can’t fight getting older but you seem to find a way to turn back the clock and have restored my confidence! 2017 TRENDS
Non-surgical Facial Rejuvenation WITH NEW OPTIONS becoming available all the time, non-surgical approaches are fast becoming preferred for facial rejuvenation. Compared to surgery, these less invasive methods are more affordable, safer, and entail less down-time. According to Dr. Dawn Gangi, when done well, the look one achieves is radiant and natural. The toolbox of treatments for complete nonsurgical facial rejuvenation includes tightening loose skin through radiofrequency treatments, eliminating expression lines with Botox® or Xeomin®, replacing volume loss (sunken cheeks, hollowing eyes, lines about the mouth) with a variety of fillers such as Juvederm® or Radiesse®, as well as restoring sun-damaged complexion with laser or IPL. In some cases, an individual’s aging is advanced enough to require surgery; if this is not you, or if surgery is not an option for medical reasons, non-surgical facial rejuvenation is the perfect answer! KNOWING HOW TO NAVIGATE through the constantly evolving legal world of Family Law is just one of the necessary skills at which the attorneys at Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti LLP are adept. Sandra C. Fava, head of the firm’s Family Law Group, says that upcoming changes to the child support statute, which will take effect in early 2017, as well as other recent changes to the alimony and palimony statutes, will and have resulted in differences of interpretation. Clients should feel confident that their attorneys are on top of all changes in the law, and also that their legal representatives understand the emotional struggle that comes with divorce. Riker Danzig provides legal expertise and creative, goaloriented solutions balanced with compassion.

When they ask where you got that (Grenada) tan, just smile. By Rita Guarna
Admit it: When you find an amazing restaurant or boutique you’re sometimes tempted to keep it to yourself lest it “go mainstream.” That’s how I felt when I visited Grenada. Though it was spotted by Christopher Columbus on his third voyage in 1498, it’s not on many Caribbean travelers’ radar, so it’s unpretentious, rugged and real. How nice it would be to keep it that way. I’d visited the island 100 miles north of Venezuela years ago and marveled at how relaxed I felt—even though that was the first (and so far, thankfully, only) time my luggage was lost. So recently when I was in dire need of a little R&R, I headed back, with plans to do nothing more than morning yoga, some vegging on the beach and a little sightseeing. I found the perfect home-away-from-home at Laluna, a bohemian-luxe resort on Morne Rouge Bay. Its 16 one- and two-bedroom cottages and villas are set in the hills amid 25 secluded acres, each cottage with its own private veranda and plunge pool. Designed by Gabriella Giuntoli, creator of Giorgio Armani’s villa on Panarea in the Aeolian Islands, the intimate bungalows feature open floor plans, thatched roofs and indoor/outdoor bathrooms. “It’s all about barefoot luxury,” explains Bernardo Bertucci, the resort’s owner and as unlikely a hotelier as you’ll ever meet. A 15-year fashion-industry marketing executive, he had no experience in the hospitality business, unless you count simply being from Italy. Working for brands including Prada, Armani and Bell Logo, parent company of Tod’s, he fell in love with Grenada and decided that clothing the elite wasn’t so different from catering to their vacation needs. As a result, there are daily complimentary classes in yoga and meditation in a beachfront pavilion and an authentic Asian spa with Balinese therapists. When I met Bernardo, he declared us paisanos—compatriots, more or less—as he’s from the same region, Calabria, as my father. But when he discovered that my mother hails from Sicily, he took to calling me Siciliana, a nickname that stuck during my visit. Unlike larger resorts, this one makes you feel like a treasured houseguest of a host who’s kind and gracious without being overly intrusive.

Then there’s the food. A beachfront Italian (natch) restaurant serves up Bernardo’s favorite dishes with ingredients flown in from his native land. These include tuna preserved in extra-virgin olive oil for 12 months, olive oil from the Bertucci family farm in Calabria, Parmesan cheese, tomatoes, olives (which are delicious!) and Pasta Conte, artisanal pasta from southern Italy, which is only available there. To this mix, Bertucci adds local fish and Grenada’s spice bounty—not for nothing is this place known as “the spice island”; it’s a leading producer of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, allspice and nutmeg. My favorite plates included an octopus salad with potatoes, chickpeas, sun-dried tomatoes and snap peas and olives; a chilled seafood salad loaded with shrimp, calamari and scallops with olives and capers; and Grenadian spiced pumpkin soup, which was creamy without being heavy and had a nice ginger taste. To wash down the great food, there’s a full bar. The resort’s signature drink, the Laluna Mist, is made from pineapple-lime slush, citrus vodka and blue Curaçao and is both pretty and tasty. In keeping with the Italian vibe, however, my drink of choice was a refreshing Aperol Spritz, a combo of prosecco with a splash of Aperol, a bitter liqueur, and club soda garnished with an orange. For those who’ve never tasted it, Aperol is akin to Campari but less bitter (and with far less alcohol). Between the sunshine and the great food and drink, it’s easy to become a true sloth here—Grenadians like to “lime,” a verb that basically means “chill out”—but that would be a mistake. The 120-square-mile island boasts beautiful waterfalls (Seven Sisters Falls inside Grand Etang National Park is the one we visited), nutmeg factories, cocoa plantations and a rum distillery, and all are worth seeing. Or do as we did and check out the island from the sea. We set sail for a few hours aboard Savvy, a 43-foot sloop, which leaves St. George’s harbor. Go snorkeling at Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park and then take in one of the most gorgeous sunsets I’ve ever seen. Keep Grenada secret? Ah, but the guilt would torment me. This place is too special not to share.
