DOCTORS TODAY HAVE MORE EFFECTIVE TOOLS THAN EVER for treating heart disease. But science is also telling us more about our own power to influence our heart health, and American Heart Month is a good time to become more aware. One study indicates that just 15 minutes of brisk walking each day can help us live longer. As you will read on page 24, Gary Rogal, M.D., medical director for Cardiac Services at RWJBarnabas Health, describes the roles of the patient and his or her physician in heart health as “a 50–50 proposition.” Alas, people sometimes get in their own way. To keep their hearts healthy, they know they need to exercise more, and they are planning to get back to that gym for an ambitious new workout routine—just as soon as they get around to it. Until then, they figure, why bother with half measures? That is dangerous thinking. Instead of waiting for perfection tomorrow, we should start today to take the small actions we can—like those 15 minutes. Research shows that every little step helps. When treatment for cardiovascular disease is required, it is important to know that the technology and clinical expertise now available at Saint Barnabas Medical Center give doctors choices they never had before. For example, the risks of open heart surgery have long made it inadvisable for some elderly or frail patients who needed repair or replacement of the aortic valve (page 28). Now a less-invasive procedure called transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) offers safe and effective treatment without those risks, and it is being applied more broadly than ever. When a heart’s rhythm has gone awry, cardiac ablation is often used to restore a regular beat. Here too doctors have more options than ever. On page 30, you will learn about advanced tools to map the heart in real time during cardiac ablation procedures. For maintaining heart health, this is a great time to be alive. Saint Barnabas Medical Center is a willing and ready partner in that effort. Let’s Be Healthy Together.

Innovative valve replacement surgery. Because you can’t be replaced. As New Jersey’s most extensive heart care network, RWJBarnabas Health performs more Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacements (TAVR) than any hospital or health care system in the state—and our outcomes far exceed national benchmarks in safety, life expectancy, and risks of complications, too. Available at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Saint Barnabas Medical Center, patients usually go home only a few days after the procedure. For more information and to make an appointment with one of New Jersey’s top cardiologists, visit rwjbh.org/tavr.

DON’T FORGET TO VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE MORRIS AND ESSEX COUNTY BUSINESSES! VOTING ENDS APRIL 28, 2018

HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTHIEST, HAPPIEST YEAR YET! I LEARN SOMETHING NEW each time we prepare our February/March issue, devoted to ways in which we can make this year our healthiest, happiest yet. For example, I didn’t know that playing certain video games for 30 minutes a day can improve memory or that consuming less than a teaspoon of salt a day might help curb an appetite. I also wasn’t aware that you can still derive a benefit from getting a flu shot this month. A bonus: The more folks in a community that get poked, the fewer outbreaks of flu, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the spirit of learning something new, it’s become something of a tradition to celebrate a fresh year of possibilities first by providing you with tips—52 of them—you can act upon today (or next week or the week after) that will lead to a more fun and fulfilling 2018. See “52 Ways to Get Healthy and Happy” on page 36 and get started! And, of course, we’ve renewed our own resolution to deliver you the best that our counties have to offer. Because this is our health and fitness issue, you’ll find great little black bags to stow your gym gear in, places where you can find farm fresh produce all year long and an article on getting rid of back pain (if you overdo it at the gym or simply tweak it while tying a shoe). We also hear from Montclair resident and WNBC investigative reporter Chris Glorioso, who, in an exclusive interview with Morris/Essex Health & Life, tells us how he keeps in shape while he’s on a stakeout. Whatever your personal focus this month (and year), here’s wishing you a happy and healthy 2018!

HAVE A HEART

February may have been American Heart Month—and the perfect time to both raise awareness and focus on your ticker—but it’s essential to maintain proper heart health year-round. Here are some steps you can take: Eat healthier. The Mayo Clinic recommends controlling portion sizes and sodium intake by using a small bowl for high-calorie, high-sodium meals and a larger plate for low-calorie, nutritious meals made with heart-healthy veggies, fruits and whole grains. Be sure to include berries like strawberries and blueberries in your diet; they contain natural antioxidants, polyphenols and fiber, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease. Exercise more frequently. Total-body, non-impact activities like swimming and rowing are the most beneficial to your heart health—the more muscles involved in an exercise, the harder your heart has to work. The West Essex YMCA has indoor swimming classes and aquatic programs for everyone from infants to seniors, to keep their hearts happy and healthy. Learn more at metroymcas.org. Schedule a check-up. Make an appointment with a heart specialist at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, and see how your heart health measures up. The center offers comprehensive adult and pediatric cardiac services in centers around New Jersey. Call 888.724.7123 for more information.

CULINARY CORNER WORTH IT The Ainsworth, a trendy restaurant located inside Hotel Indigo in Newark, recently opened its door to hotel guests and city dwellers alike. Besides typical appetizers like wings and wraps, the menu boasts gourmet burgers like the mac & cheese burger, caprese burrata burger with fresh mozzarella and basil pesto and the French onion burger. Exclusive cocktails like the Cinnamon Peach Mule and Knotty Pine can be ordered at the bar, and the space boasts views of downtown Newark and the NYC skyline. It’s certainly not the only Ainsworth around: The restaurant has popular locations in both Chelsea and the East Village, Hoboken and Kansas City. I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM Mendham residents Joseph Murphy and Sean McDonough made history last fall by opening the town’s only local ice cream shop featuring a medley of frozen treats, from Hershey’s ice cream and root beer floats to non-dairy sorbet and house-made ice cream cakes. After a successful first season, the creamery took a winter hiatus but will be reopening soon for its much-anticipated spring season. Murphy and McDonough have made a point to keep the creamery communityoriented by only staffing the front counter with Mendham and Chester residents, giving local students work experience and a way to earn money during the summer. Stay updated on the shop’s spring season by checking in on its website listed below. MENDHAM CREAMERY, 2A HILLTOP RD., MENDHAM, 973.348.5854, MENDHAMCREAMERY.COM

Florham Park

The median home value in Florham Park is currently $657,500—up 2.3 percent over last year and predicted to rise 1 percent within the next year, according to Zillow.

THE UPSCALE BOROUGH IS SCORING PLENTY OF TOUCHDOWNS. teachers). For higher education, parts of the College of Saint Elizabeth campus are in Florham Park, as are portions of Fairleigh Dickinson University. The town’s main attractions are ample. For exercise enthusiasts, there’s a Lifetime Gym—the only one around— and a Pure Barre studio. If traditional workouts aren’t cutting it, Total Health offers CoolSculpting (shh, we won’t tell anyone) along with more medicinal fare, while The Peer Group has a full staff of renowned plastic surgeons for those seeking a full nip ’n tuck. There’s also the area’s sole Trader Joe’s. And since Florham Park is just 30 miles west of The Big Apple and residents are sure to have plenty of houseguests, everyone will be pleased to know that the much-anticipated Archer Hotel will open at The Green shortly. Among its amenities: 161 guest rooms and suites, a backyard with a bocce ball court, an indoor pool and Archer’s kitchen, with house-made breakfast and evening fare. But the space won’t just be for visitors: Residents are sure to stop by its bar and patio for a cocktail, giving them yet another reason to toast Florham Park.

DINING

There are plenty of eats in Florham Park, from an expansive menu at the Thirsty Turtle (think burgers, filet mignon and macadamiaencrusted tilapia) to strictly Italian at Puleo’s Brick Oven (be sure to try the melenzane rollatini appetizer). Viet Ai, meanwhile, serves Vietnamese fare in a cozy, former residential space; Moe’s Restaurant & Tex Mex Grill accommodates just about any diet, including Paleo, vegan, vegetarian, Whole30 and gluten-friendly. And if you sometimes crave disco fries or breakfast at 10 p.m.—hey, we do too— there’s always the Florham Park Diner.

WE’VE GOT ONE QUESTION FOR YOU: GIANTS OR JETS? If you’re from Florham Park, we’re betting your answer is the latter. The Morris County borough, about 7.6 square miles in size, became proud home to the football team’s training facility and corporate headquarters back in 2008 after beating out a slew of other towns all hoping to be the Jets’ new homeland. But alas, Florham Park’s origins were touchdown-free and, hence, much more humble. Settled by the English sometime after 1680, the community was mostly a farming area, but by the late 1800s, it had become a desired retreat for the New York City upper class—in fact, there were more than 100 millionaires living in town. Today, there are some 12,605 residents (including, we’re sure, some Jets and a few millionaires). Kids in pre-kindergarten to eighth grade go to three schools in the district (there’s a total of about 982 students and 89 classroom teachers); those in ninth through 12th grades attend the Hanover Park High School in East Hanover Township (there are about 876 students and 85 classroom

TAKE

HEART

—AND TAKE CONTROL ACT TODAY TO IMPROVE YOUR LONGTIME CARDIAC HEALTH. IF YOU COULD DO SOMETHING JUST 15 minutes a day that could give you a longer life, would you do it? For most people that would be a no-brainer. “One study showed that 15 minutes of walking daily can extend life,” says Gary J. Rogal, M.D., medical director for Cardiac Services at RWJBarnabas Health. But alas, too many people don’t walk that walk. As a cardiologist, Dr. Rogal has a professional interest in the treatment of heart disease. Indeed, he is more than ready to offer treatment when appropriate. But the message he most wants to convey is about a low-tech “treatment” you can administer yourself. It’s called exercise. “Sometimes adherence to medication regimens and recommended lifestyle changes—such as increased physical activity—can be more powerful than procedures such as stenting and angioplasty,” says the doctor, adding that extreme caution must be used in pursuing procedures in any case. Exercise is tricky to maintain, because many of us feel that what we’re actually doing is a drop in the bucket compared with what we “should” be doing. So there’s a tendency to let it lapse and say, “Why bother?” That’s why those 15 minutes of daily walking are so important. Research has shown that people can go a long way to

24

prevent a cardiac event—or to improve their prognosis after an event—with regular physical activity. And it doesn’t have to be vigorous. Studies also show that, besides getting exercise, you can improve heart risk by taking other specific steps, such as making changes to diet and using prescribed medicines when necessary to lower blood pressure. In fact, new guidelines, announced late last year, focus on empowering patients to take these steps seriously. One thing these guidelines do is make blood-pressure targets more exacting, with the result that instead of just 30 percent of Americans having hypertension (high blood pressure), now 50 percent do. The idea is not to label people, but to stir them to be proactive about their heart health. “We know that the things you do dayto-day can decrease the chances you’ll need hospital care in the future, or at least reduce the amount of care you might need,” says Dr. Rogal. “So for issues involving the heart, patients play a big role in their own health. At Saint Barnabas Medical Center, empowering patients to take the right steps is an emphasis for us.” Dr. Rogal describes the roles of the patient and his or her physician as a 50– 50 proposition: treatments that medical professionals offer account for half of the health benefits to a patient, and the steps

Gary Rogal, M.D.

patients take—such as getting exercise, sticking with a healthy diet and managing blood pressure—account for the other half. That’s an important message for patients. Since half of your cardiovascular risk is something you can improve, you have significant control over your own health. In the COURAGE study, published in 2007, patients with stable heart disease were divided into two groups. Those treated with medications and lifestyle changes alone fared just as well as those who had been given stents. The point? It matters what patients do—your actions can make a difference. “This was one of the first major trials to show that effective solutions to cardiac problems do not always need to be hi-tech interventions,” says Dr. Rogal. “Low-tech, low-risk lifestyle interventions should become a part of everyone’s daily life.” Stress management, diet and adherence to prescribed medications are critical to optimizing cardiovascular health, says Dr. Rogal. “There are some who think that even gene expression can be altered by exercise,” he adds. “So it may be that your parents are not always your destiny.” The doctor concludes: “Our team at Saint Barnabas Medical Center can definitely care for you if you get really sick. But our message now is also that you can help yourself become—and remain—as healthy as possible.”

REACHING THE TARGETS FOR BLOOD PRESSURE Blood pressure is measured with two numbers: n Systolic pressure is the top number. It measures

blood pressure when your heart contracts. n Diastolic pressure is the bottom number. It

measures blood pressure when the heart is relaxed. Until recently the target used by most doctors was 140/90 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury). The target now for most people is 130/80 mm Hg or lower. If you have either a top or a bottom number that is higher than this target, you may have hypertension—high blood pressure—according to the latest guidelines from the American Heart Association. “Learn how to measure your blood pressure accurately, and talk to your doctor about all Read as “130 over 80 the ways you can millimeters of mercury” improve it,” says Gary Rogal, M.D., medical director for Cardiac Services at RWJBarnabas Health. GETTING THE NUMBERS RIGHT

Martin Pontecorvo, D.O.

To take charge of heart health, blood pressure (BP) is an important number to know. But, as with checking your temperature, if the measurement is off, the numbers won’t be helpful. “Patients sometimes have high blood pressure readings when they are in the doctor’s office because they are nervous or have been rushing to get there,” says Martin Pontecorvo, D.O., an internal medicine physician at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. “So it’s best to get two readings in the doctor’s office. If the readings are high, we usually check a second time on both sides, especially if blood pressure medicine is being considered or dosage changed.” Whether a nurse measures blood pressure at your doctor’s office or you use a BP cuff at home, follow these tips from the American Heart Association:

FIRST, PLAN AHEAD: n Avoid smoking (which you shouldn’t be doing anyway), caffeine and exercise 30 minutes before the measurement. n Empty your bladder. n Sit quietly for five minutes. n Wear clothes that you can easily remove to expose the upper arm. n Keep still while it’s measured. n Get the measurement from both arms, and at two to three different times. If there’s a difference, use the higher numbers. n If you’re taking your own BP at home, ask your doctor or nurse to explain how to do so—and how often. n Use the same BP cuff each time, and make sure it’s accurate. n Make sure the bottom edge of the wrap that goes around the arm is directly above the bend of your elbow.

IF YOU MEASURE YOUR BP EVERY DAY: n In the morning, take two readings before you take any medicines. Space them one minute apart. n In the evening before supper, do the same. n If you have a change in treatment for any condition, take your BP reading two weeks after the change and one week before your next doctor’s visit. n Record all readings, and take them with you to the doctor. “Home measurements are important in guiding treatment,” says Dr. Pontecorvo. “If BP readings differ from those in the office, it may be a good idea to bring your home device to the appointment and compare readings to check accuracy.”

A LITTLE EXERCISE CAN BE A BIG HELP Question: What’s the most underutilized treatment to control cholesterol? The answer is exercise. Exercise improves circulation, controls weight and lowers “bad” blood cholesterol. It’s one of the most important steps you can take to improve heart health. One study showed that the effects of exercise last even long after the activity is stopped. And although it may be because exercisers are motivated to improve in all ways, other risk factors are improved with exercise too—like lipid patterns, blood pressure and diabetes, for example. There may even be a beneficial effect on depression, which in turn

makes lifestyle alterations easier. When it comes to making exercise part of your lifestyle, there are two points to remember. First, you don’t have to run a marathon. Even very moderate exercise is helpful. Second, weight and cholesterol control aren’t the only reasons to exercise. Exercise can improve overall health, mood and outlook on life. You may even find your gentle workouts habit-forming—in a good way.

A SAFER FIX FOR HEART-VALVE PROBLEMS

TAVR TACKLES AORTIC VALVE STENOSIS IN THE ELDERLY WITHOUT THE RISKS OF OPEN HEART SURGERY.

WHAT SAPS VITALITY AFTER AGE 75? One thing, in many cases, is a condition called aortic valve stenosis—a narrowing of the valve that connects the left ventricle to the aorta, the body’s largest artery, often caused by the gradual buildup of calcium. The traditional treatment is open heart surgery to replace the valve. But there’s a catch-22: For many seniors, the aging process that has caused the problem has also caused other conditions Mark J. Russo, M.D. Bruce Haik, M.D. that rule these patients out as safe candidates for such a major operation. Enter TAVR (pronounced TA-ver)—transcatheter aortic valve replacement—a procedure that since 2011 has been bringing dramatic relief to thousands of seniors, permitting them to enjoy a healthier, livelier life. And thanks to research at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and across the nation, this one-hour procedure, available at the medical center, will soon be an option for many more individuals. Specialists at the medical center already provide more patients with this type of valve replacement than any other center in the state. (See accompanying article, “In Heart Valve Replacement, Experience Counts,” on facing page.) The TAVR procedure involves threading a thin tube, the catheter, from an artery in the groin up to the heart. Using tiny tools and specialized techniques, the physician collapses, or folds, an artificial replacement valve so that it is very small, secures it to the tip of the catheter, then threads it up to the heart. Physicians at Saint Barnabas Medical Center use state-of-the-

“WE’RE PART OF A VERY IMPORTANT NATIONAL RESEARCH STUDY TODAY THAT WE THINK WILL LEAD TO OFFERING TAVR TO YOUNGER, HEALTHIER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME CONDITION.” —MARK J. RUSSO, M.D. art imaging technology to place it in the precise area of the faulty valve, and then expand the new valve. “Aortic valve stenosis is one of the most common of all heart valve problems, affecting as many as one in 10 people over 65 years old,” says Mark J. Russo, M.D., an expert on heart valve disease and a cardiac surgeon at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. “As the condition progresses it causes people to feel short of breath and fatigued, and in more advanced cases it can lead to sudden death.” “Surgical aortic valve replacement for aortic stenosis is one the best surgical procedures that I have to offer patients as a cardiac surgeon, but now for most patients TAVR has proven to be even better,” Dr. Russo says. “Compared with open heart surgery, recovery after TAVR is much quicker. Instead of spending five to 10 days in the hospital, most of our TAVR patients spend just one night, In fact, many patients say they feel better immediately.” Intially TAVR was the preferred treatment for older and for sicker patients; those who were poor candidates for the more invasive open heart surgery. However, Dr. Russo and his colleagues at Saint Barnabas Medical Center have taken a leading role nationally in examining the use of TAVR in a broader range of patients. These include lower-risk and younger patients, as well as patients with bicuspid aortic valves, a common irregularity of aortic-valve anatomy. In these populations open heart surgery was previously the preferred treatment. In most patient populations, TAVR has been

proven in recent studies to be associated with increased survival, decreased risk of stroke, and improved quality of life compared with traditional open heart surgery. “Our center has been fortunate to play a leading role in this work,” says Dr. Russo. “For the first time, heart surgeons and interventional cardiologists are collaborating as a heart team to perform these lifesaving procedures,” says Bruce J. Haik, M.D., system director of Cardiac Catheterization Labs for RWJBarnabas Health. “The skill sets required in our respective cardiovascular specialities are invaluable when assessing a patient’s risks and benefits before, during and after the TAVR procedure. Most of our ‘best in class’ outcomes are a result of this heart team approach.” Dr. Russo, Dr. Haik and their team continue to be part of important national research studies exploring better treatment options for aortic valve stenosis. “Until now, we have waited to correct this condition until after patients suffer symptoms,” says Dr. Russo. “However, even before symptoms manifest, patient may suffer irreversible damage to the heart or even be at risk for sudden cardiac death. Given the lower risk associated with the TAVR procedure, there is now increasing evidence that it is better to replace the valve before the patient experiences symptoms.” Dr. Russo says this field will continue to expand. In the coming months other new techniques and devices will become available to treat other valvular conditions, including mitral regurgitation and tricuspid valve disease.

Aortic valve stenosis:

KNOW THESE SYMPTOMS If you’re experiencing any of these problems, tell your physician. They could be signs of a heartvalve problem that can be treated: n Breathlessness n Chest pain, pressure or

tightness n Fainting n Palpitations n Decline in activity level n Heart murmur

Beware, however: Sometimes aortic valve stenosis and other heartvalve problems can develop without telltale symptoms, or symptoms can come on so gradually that you may not notice them. Don’t skip regular physical exams with your doctor. Source: American Heart Association

In heart valve replacement, experience counts

For patients with a narrowing of a heart valve, the condition called aortic valve stenosis, replacing the valve is often the best—and sometimes the only—cure. When it comes to finding the right medical team, research shows that experience counts. The American College of Cardiology reports that the more often a team performs valve replacement using a procedure called TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement), the better patients fare, on average. The Saint Barnabas Medical Center physicians have that experience. The RWJBarnabas Health TAVR team has repaired the valves of approximately 1,000 patients, and patients here have some of the best outcomes in the entire U.S. Other key facts: n The RWJBarnabas Health team offers the latest TAVR technology to a broader range of patients by having access to some of the newest and most advanced devices. n The RWJBarnabas Health program is one of the few centers in the U.S. able to offer TAVR to low-risk patients.

What is catheter ablation?

“A procedure that uses radiofrequency energy (similar to microwave heat) to destroy a small area of heart tissue that is causing rapid and irregular heartbeats. Destroying this tissue helps restore your heart’s regular rhythm. The procedure is also called radiofrequency ablation.” —American Heart Association

Marc Roelke, M.D.

THE KEY TO FIXING AN IRREGULAR HEARTBEAT, or arrhythmia, is finding the exact spot in the heart that causes it. Because of a trio of hightech tools now in use by heart specialists at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, the hunt just got easier. For patients, that means more and better options for successful treatment. With these technologies, physicians can choose the most appropriate tool based on the specific problem with the patient’s heart rhythm and his or her underlying heart condition. “Heart specialists across the nation use a procedure called cardiac ablation to locate and treat abnormal electrical circuits in the heart that cause arrhythmia,” says Marc Roelke, M.D., director of Electrophysiology at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, who specializes in the electric activity of the heart. “But at the medical center, we have an advantage. We have not one, but three advanced tools to map the heart in real time during cardiac ablation. Together, this range of features gives us the flexibility to find the right method for each patient. It really sets us apart.” Heart arrhythmias can make the heart flutter, or beat too fast, too slow or irregularly. This causes it to pump blood less effectively, which can affect the entire body. Symptoms include feeling weak or short of breath, or having a pounding heart. Some people have chest pain or feel lightheaded, dizzy or faint. Until the heart beats normally again, these symptoms can affect lifestyle and overall health. Often, medicines can control the symptoms of arrhythmia. But not everyone can take those medicines, in some cases because of side effects such as blurred vision or slowed heartbeat. For other people, medicines do not work. Cardiac, or catheter, ablation is a cure offered by experienced electrophysiologists, a special type of heart doctor. During the procedure, physicians thread a catheter through a blood vessel from the groin to the heart. Once it is in position, they use tiny tools to destroy the abnormal tissue that is causing the problem. The heart then beats normally. Without catheter techniques, open heart surgery might be the only other option. But in using catheters, physicians at the medical center rely on a different set of advanced tools and techniques in order to “see” into the heart. This is where the variety of equipment options at Saint Barnabas Medical Center becomes important. During catheter ablation, physicians use tiny, high-recorders that project the images on monitors in the procedure room. The challenge

is to pinpoint the errant cells in a heart that is beating, and track electrical impulses that are also in motion. Of course, the patient’s chest is also moving with each breath. “Our equipment helps solve these challenges,” Dr. Roelke says. With the three advanced cardiac ablation tools at the medical center, physicians can choose the most appropriate one based on the specific problem with the patient’s heart rhythm and his or her underlying heart condition. “Using GPS-like navigation, we receive real-time, three dimensional images of the chambers of the heart, the location of the catheters and the area of arrhythmia,” the doctor explains. “The images even adjust when the patient moves, which is important in avoiding healthy tissue nearby.” Features of the three cardiac ablation tools at the medical center improve accuracy of treatment as well as patient safety. For example, one of the newest technologies uses 64 electrodes to track the path of electrical impulses, compared with just four in other tools. It’s the information from these electrodes that computer software uses to create the 3-D displays. “The images are so detailed that we can sometimes see the scar tissue and abnormal electrical circuits that are causing the arrhythmia,” he says. One type of advanced image the tools provide is “intracardiac echocardiogram” (ICE). ICE uses sound waves (echo), like sonar, to map the inside of the heart and valves, and it has several advantages. It provides clearer images of the soft tissues of the heart, and it does so without the need for X-rays, which use radiation. “The equipment we use incorporates the information we get from ICE into the 3-D map of the heart,” Dr. Roelke says. “Altogether, this detail helps produce the real-time images we need for the ablations.” Another new feature improves patient safety in another way. “The technology gives feedback about the force of the catheter against the heart wall,” Dr. Roelke says. “This helps us to navigate the catheter through the heart in the safest manner.” These tools, plus an experienced team that runs one of the highest-volume ablation centers in the state, mean heart patients with arrhythmia receive exceptional, cutting-edge treatment at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. “It’s dedicated people and technologies like these that help us give our patients some of the most advanced care available in the state,” says the doctor.

IN THE NATION

PATIENTS GET A NEW LEASE ON LIFE AT SAINT BARNABAS MEDICAL CENTER IN THE TOP LIVING DONOR KIDNEY TRANSPLANT PROGRAM IN THE U.S. FOR PATIENTS ON KIDNEY DIALYSIS OR HEADING FOR IT soon, kidney transplant can be a ticket to greater freedom and a better life. And often such organs come from the recently deceased. But a kidney from a living donor—from someone who volunteers to give one of his or her two healthy organs—is the best option for patients with chronic kidney disease. “There are more than 100,000 kidney-disease patients across the country waiting for a transplant, and patients on the list for a deceased donor can wait seven years or more, with much of that time spent on dialysis,” says Shamkant Mulgaonkar, M.D., chief of the Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division at Saint Barnabas Medical Center who leads the team that is creating new options for patients needing a kidney transplant. At the medical center alone, 1,700 people are on the waiting list for a kidney. But New Jersey’s first and only Living Donor Institute is helping to reduce that number. And it has now been ranked the number-one living donor kidney transplant program in the U.S., part of the third-largest overall kidney transplant program. “The driving force for us is having one of our patients sitting in the office in front of us and knowing that the person is struggling on dialysis or concerned about starting it soon,” says the doctor. “So at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, our team of transplant specialists has created innovative options to connect living donors with these patients.” The institute was created by world-class experts in the Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. These specialists bring life-changing and lifesaving transplants to

32

more than 335 people each year. Half of these are through transplants from living donors. “The wait for living donors is much shorter, and the kidneys donated can function well for twice as long as do those from deceased donors,” Dr. Mulgaonkar says. Living donors are typically people who are willing to donate to a family member or friend who is on dialysis or will soon begin it. Often, however, the donor and the patient do not match. They may have different blood types, for example. Or an adult kidney may be too large for Shamkant Mulgaonkar, M.D. a child to use. However, these donors may match someone else on the transplant list. So the team at the medical center has created another option, the Kidney Paired Donation Program. In a database are patients who have a willing-but-incompatible donor who could be paired with other people in the same situation. Other types of living donors at Saint Barnabas Medical Center are “altruistic” donors, who give simply out of generosity. They do not necessarily know anyone who needs a kidney transplant. The results of living-donor donations can be far-reaching. Living donor Tamara Lomax, for example, donated a kidney to a stranger. The team at the medical center found a match, so she donated her kidney to that patient. That patient’s donor was paired to a second patient, and the matches continued. In all, four patients received kidneys because of Lomax’s initial altruistic donation.

A GIFT FOR THE GROOM

“Because of another altruistic donor here, we have a chain that so far has resulted in 13 patients getting kidney transplants,” Dr. Mulgaonkar says. “And we have the potential to make more matches on this chain. It’s an amazing program.” This kidney donation chain of 13 is the longest such chain in any hospital that was started by an altruistic donor, he says. “We have a very large, experienced team that makes these complicated kidney paired donations happen,” he says. With innovative matching programs like this, plus advances in transplant surgery, the Saint Barnabas Medical Center team now offers more patients the option of life-changing living donor transplant than any other center in the country. Almost every weekday, a child, teen or adult gets a new kidney at the medical center. “It’s an emotional highlight to see these patients get better,” Dr. Mulgaonkar says. “Our team is driven to help more and more of these individuals, and so we’ll continue to be innovative, participate in exciting research, and educate others about getting involved in our living donor program.”

In the annals of unique wedding gifts, this has to be right up near the top: a kidney for the groom. And from a stranger, no less. This amazing “matchmaking” story of both love and generosity came about when Kathleen Pruss joined the Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division’s Living Donor Program at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. “Living donors” are people who donate one of their two healthy kidneys to someone in need of a transplant. Using their experience and a powerful database, the Saint Barnabas Medical Center transplant team found a recipient for Pruss’ kidney. The match was dialysis patient Rodney Williams, 61, a retired insurance agent from East Orange. When he found out he had a kidney donor match, the news meant he would no longer be heading into another year of dialysis. Last June, after his successful transplant surgery, Williams began a new life with his new bride, Laurie Croom. And Pruss lives with the knowledge that her unselfish gift means the couple can enjoy multiple trips to visit places near and far, instead of multiple trips every month for Williams’ dialysis. Over the last decade, the Kidney Paired Donation Program at Saint Barnabas has facilitated more than 180 kidney transplant chains. In November, at an event in the auditorium at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Williams had the opportunity to meet and thank the donor who had provided his new kidney. On that day, donors and recipients from 20 recent paired kidney donations gathered for handshakes, hugs and laughter. Said Williams: “What Saint Barnabas is doing is saving lives.”

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCHER

WNBC’S INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER CHRIS GLORIOSO IS ALWAYS ON THE MOVE—WHETHER HE’S CHECKING GOVERNMENT SPENDING OR SQUEEZING IN A MORNING WORKOUT. BY DARIUS AMOS 34

CHRIS GLORIOSO CAN’T HELP BUT notice things big and small, from his friendly Montclair neighbors and new businesses in town to legislative votes and campaign lawn signs from bygone elections. This 40-yearold township resident and father of two always keeps his eyes in focus and ears in tune—all for the public. Those are, after all, the traits of a watchdog journalist and investigative reporter. In an exclusive interview with Morris/ Essex Health & Life, Glorioso, a member of the NBC 4 New York I-Team investigative unit and seven-time Emmy award winner, discusses the stories that benefit taxpayers, staying fit while on a stakeout and why Lois Lane was the real superhero of the Superman comic strip. What makes the I-Team special? We all come to the table with different specialties and backgrounds. I specialize in public finance and exposing government waste. For example, I did a story about the NJ Treasury Department inexplicably writing off tens of millions of dollars in fines and debts owed by big energy companies. We fought for records and showed that, in some instances, the government was forgiving these fines without reason. If a resident doesn’t shovel a sidewalk, they pay a personal fine. But the government was forgiving debts owed by big companies. Taxpayers were outraged, and the Treasury isn’t writing off as much now as it once did. Does the public need more investigative reporters in general? This region would be much better served if every TV station could have a team like ours; we help keep the system honest. For example, there was one story where we were able to take the camera and show New Jerseyans a vote in Trenton when the legislature was already on a break. We found staffers of state legislators, who came back for the vote, pushing the button and voting instead of the legislators themselves. There’s proof in the pudding: Viewers saw us on the statehouse floor confronting the staffers who shouldn’t be voting on a bill. There’s no way to think that was fake news. But you almost left journalism about 10 years ago. What happened? I was a local reporter in 2007–08 covering credit defaults and swaps, mortgage derivatives and things that, frankly, I knew little about. It was so daunting when I realized that I had the responsibility to explain very complex issues to millions of people—and I was questioning whether

I was getting it right. What I needed was more expertise and time to research topics, and I wasn’t getting it. What made you stay with the profession? WNBC rang the doorbell and said, “Don’t leave journalism yet.” They developed this I-Team which would be given more time to research important issues. I was skeptical at first: Were they really going to give me three months to research a story, or were they going to say, “We need you to do a story on what Lindsay Lohan is wearing.” Well, I haven’t done any stories on Lindsay Lohan, and I’ve been given three months to do stories.

“WE DON’T HAVE SUPER POWERS— WE’RE JUST REGULAR PEOPLE WHO ARE VERY CURIOUS.” What kind of responses have you received after your stories? People can sense when you’ve worked hard. They’re not in the newsroom with you while you burn the midnight oil, but when you call them in the morning and tell them, “Hey, look what I found out,” they figure out that you’re not a nine-to-fiver and they’re grateful. I actually have people come up to me on the street and thank me. How do you find balance between your home and work lives? I never turn the email off, but I do leave the phone on my desk at home when I’m playing with the kids. Family is always first, and because the 6 p.m. news is when my stories typically air, I’m able to spend the mornings with my family. I cherish that time and try not to look at the day’s emails until I’m done with that part. I also have my amazing wife, Alison, and we use Google calendar. We’re definitely a modern family that uses technology to make sure we are keeping dates, make sure we don’t forget we need a baby sitter and go out, relax and have dinner. We like to go to MishMish, a

really good Turkish restaurant in town. Work can take a toll on one’s health. How do you stay fit? I often find myself on a stakeout, sitting in a car eating food from a gas station—not ideal for one’s fitness. But I try to ward off the health consequences with two very modest routines. One, I do at least 75 pushups every morning right after I brush my teeth. It takes less than 2 minutes. Second, I always ride my bike at full sprint to the bus or train. I don’t care if it’s snowing and I’m wearing a 3-piece suit. “I don’t have time” isn’t an excuse, because the bike actually saves time. You’ve been in Montclair for about a year. What are your go-to places? Local Coffee is a place I go to every morning to try to gather my thoughts. Sometimes I get completely wrapped up in a story, and that could be an impediment to thinking clearly. A café like that is a great place to come to have a cup of coffee, think and give me 10 minutes where I’m not answering phones and emails. As a dad of two kids, the Turtle Back Zoo is an amazing place. I can sit there for hours and watch the monkeys. As a parent, it’s as fascinating to you as your kids. Did you work on your high school newspaper? I did not—I’m not even sure my high school had a paper. It wasn’t until I went to Syracuse University that I thought about going into journalism. I started on the college radio station, and my first job was at WSYR radio, an AM news station. Radio makes you a better writer because you don’t have the benefit of pictures. I put a lot into my writing, because what good is it if a great story is broadcast but nobody watches it through to the end? I tell my interns to treat their story like a term paper: research, outline, edit. Who’s your favorite fictional journalist? I wouldn’t say Clark Kent but maybe Lois Lane. She didn’t have super powers, but her strengths were her passion and personality. As an investigative journalist, people want to talk to you; they wouldn’t mind sitting down and having a beer with you. I like to think that someone wouldn’t mind having a beer with me, and that means they trust me enough to talk to me about my next investigation. Lois Lane had charisma, and people wouldn’t mind having a beer or coffee with her. We don’t have super powers—we’re just regular people who are very curious. MORRIS/ESSEX HE ALTH & LIFE

1 GET IN

THE SWIM

Swimming is great exercise disguised as fun. A University of Texas researcher says it can help lower high blood pressure and reduce arterial stiffness, a heart-disease risk factor. If you need a brush-up, eightweek classes are available for all age groups at the Lakeland Hills Family YMCA’s pool (973.334.2820). Also available there: AquaSculpt, a fun weightresistance workout that focuses on toning your body’s major muscle groups. For competitive young swimmers, the YMCA also has its own swim team that competes from October through April. Visit lakelandhillsymca. org and click on “Programs” for more info.

2

Ditch the diet soda. Will this be the year you bid farewell to your bubbly buddy? Diet sodas have been linked to headache, depression, an increased risk of diabetes and—in one study—a 45 percent higher risk of heart attack or stroke. Some alternatives: flavored sparkling water, green tea or the chicorybased, caffeine-free beverage Teeccino.

3

Take a social-media break. Could you do a week without Instagram or Twitter? Friends won’t forget you—we promise—and taking a break may help restore perspective and a sense of what you really want from these tools.

4

Shop smart for running shoes. Know your precise shoe brand, style and size? Feel free to buy online and save. But if you’re choosing a new model, you might want to drop in to Fleet Feet in Montclair for a consultation and professional fitting with shoe expert John Fabbro.

5

Take a relaxing walk in the woods. The Essex County Department of Parks’ Environmental Center holds a number of guided walks, and you don’t have to wait for springtime. One upcoming walk will be held at the Hatfield Swamp from 8:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24. (Visit essexcountyparks.org and click the “Facilities” tab).

6

Battle Father Time with tai chi. According to a study published in Cell Transplantation, the ancient Chinese martial art can help replenish stem cells and slow the aging process—plus help with balance, blood pressure and stress reduction. Check around for classes—the Thai Chi Academy of Northern New Jersey (thaichimontclair. com), for example, offers workshops at its Montclair location.

7

Get ahead—in bed! Looking to interest your spouse in the bedroom? Wave a juicy copy of the Journal of Management, which in 2017 published a study on the benefits of sex. Apparently it improves “both daily job satisfaction and daily job engagement,” so fluff up those pillows, think of your career and—for heaven’s sake—do your homework.

8

Respect ol’ Sol. Skin safety is a year-round project, not just a beach-time thing. In fact, says the American Cancer Society, “UV rays become more intense in the spring, even before temperatures get warmer.” Shop

before summer for sun-protective clothing that lists a UV Protection Factor.

9

Live like a Dane. Hygge (hoo-ga), a homey, cozy philosophy, is one of Denmark’s secrets for topping surveys as the world’s happiest country. (It ain’t the weather.) A hygge-rich life, they say, values possessions less and experiences—such as a quiet candlelight dinner with friends—more. Put a little hygge in your world with Signe Johansen’s book How to Hygge: The Nordic Secrets to a Happy Life.

13

Join a support group. Depressed? Have a chronic illness? Whatever your health or life situation, there are others who’ve been there and can listen, offer tips and share lighter moments. Find your group via the New Jersey Self-Help Group Clearinghouse at njgroups.org, or at RWJBarnabas Health via rwjbh.org/events.

10 MAKE ROOM FOR THE ’SHROOM.

Whole Foods and the Specialty Food Association have released a list of hot foods for this year; they say to get ready for mushroomflavored coffees, teas and smoothies. While you’re at it, savor mushrooms themselves; they’re rich in cancer-fighting antioxidants, liver-boosting selenium and vitamin D.

11

Stop smoking—for your looks’ sake. If you’re still a cigarette addict, don’t condemn yourself. Call 1.866.NJSTOPS (1.866.657.8677) promptly for help. Want more motivation? A Danish study reported in November linked smoking (and heavy drinking) with facial marks of aging such as earlobe creases, grayish rings around the corneas and yellow-orange plaques on the eyelids.

12

Parlez-vous, enfants? Maybe this is the year to make your kids suave future travelers. Their spongelike young minds can be filled with French or Spanish at the Language Workshop for Children’s Madison and Montclair locations (800.731.0830). The center also offers oneon-one Skype lessons from the comfort of your own home. And who knows? You might pick up a few new words from the kids—sometimes, you can teach an old dog new tricks.

14

Start shaking... Hands, that is. Studies show that that people are twice as likely to remember you if you shake hands with them. And it’s not just men who benefit from a firm handshake: Another study showed that women with a strong grip were viewed as more open—and they even made a more favorable first impression—than those without.

15

Consider aspirin. The jury is out on whether taking aspirin can prevent a heart attack, but a University of Southern California study found that if we all took a daily low-dose (81-mg.) aspirin, it would save 900,000 lives in the next two decades, in part because cancer death rates would be cut by 30 percent. (Check with your doctor first; aspirin also raises some bleeding risks.) MORRIS/ESSEX HE ALTH & LIFE

16

Call the cable guy. Spend 15 minutes on the horn with your cable company to make sure you’re getting the best deal possible. You’ll feel a sense of accomplisment every time you pick up the remote—plus you’re healthier when you’re wealthier, right?

17

Keep your brain young. Neuroscientists say using your noggin—especially in new pursuits— helps it stay nimble. That’s why the Global Council on Brain Health, in a recent 26page report, recommends “practicing tai chi, taking photography classes, designing a quilt, investigating your genealogy, juggling, cooking, gardening and learning how to play a musical instrument.” You needn’t excel; just pick one of these and try it!

18

Get your protein from plants. Gone is the idea that protein has to come from an animal. Pea and hemp proteins are popping up everywhere— in powders for smoothies, nutrition bars, potato chips and more. In Montclair, Manhattan Juice Bar and Café offers smoothies like the Penn Station, which features bananas, peanut butter, almond milk and chocolate vegan protein powder.

19

Drink less (and sleep better). You know if you’re drinking too much—and that if you want to quit, there’s help. Many of us can handle a social drink or two with only pleasant effects, but we shouldn’t tell ourselves tall tales like “liquor helps me sleep.” A UCLA press release quotes clinical professor of psychiatry Karen Miotto, M.D.: “The sedative effects of alcohol can be deceiving because it is associated with decreased quality of sleep and rebound insomnia.”

20

Update your phone numbers. Your smartphone contacts may be up to speed, but what about all those numbers scribbled on a bunch of random Post-its that are cluttering your desk? Head to your computer and print up a fresh, updated list—you’ll never struggle through a pile of papers trying to find the number you need again.

21

Visit a senior. Catch up with an old teacher, check in with a friend’s parent, bring a bowl of soup to a lonely relative who’s

40

getting on in age— or better yet, volunteer at a nursing home. You’ll brighten the day of a senior, make new friends and ensure good karma. After all, an old age is where you too are headed—if you’re lucky.

22 BE A DENTAL-CARE DEMON

Of course you brush, floss and see your dentist regularly; here’s another reason you may wish to be superzealous about it: A 10-year study of 122,000 Americans links gum disease with higher rates of esophageal cancer.

23

Keep your cell phone out of the bedroom. But not for the reason you may think: According to the University of Manchester, charging your phone while you’re trying to sleep can actually make you gain weight: Researchers say the light it emits can harm your body’s production of melatonin, which not only regulates sleep but helps the body convert food and drink into energy efficiently.

24

To quiet anger, breathe deep. You know it’s gonna happen sooner or later: People are going to tick you off. But let your anger be something you use rather than letting it use you. “I recommend trying ‘alternate nostril breathing’ to calm yourself down,” says wellness coach Patty Sassone at Holistic Harmony in Bloomfield. “Hold the right nostril and breathe in through the left for a count of five, and repeat with the other nostril. Do this on both sides eight times.”

25

Bike with a buddy. Two can have more than twice the fun on two-wheelers once the weather turns nice. Great spots for such bicyclingand-bonding are Boulevard Trolley Line Park in Mountain Lakes, Green View Park in Pompton Plains and the Wharton RailTrail in Dover. Find more local paths at njbikemap.com/njmap/bikepath/morris. html.

26

Wear purple. Want to be “on trend”? Put on purple! The hue-happy folks at Pantone have chosen it (“ultra violet,” to be precise) as its Color of the Year. A Pantone Color Institute exec wasn’t talking politics when she told The New York Times the pick “takes two shades that are seemingly diametrically opposed—red and blue— and brings them together.”

27

Browse books. Amazon knows your tastes pretty well by now, but remember the fun of falling in love with a book you’ve just happened upon? “We are always coming up with new displays to catch our visitors’ attention,” says Parsippany Library reference librarian Zera Borum. “The best part of a library is finding new books you might not have noticed before, and getting recommendations from a real live librarian or fellow readers. By searching for books online, you miss out on that important social aspect.” Every so often, give yourself a half hour of pure indulgence. Browse!

30

Use your pharmacist. Is it all mouse clicks these days? Not quite. A human ready to listen is as near as the corner drugstore. “Pharmacists have special training to help you manage and improve your health, including working with your healthcare team,” the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reminds us. In fact, an article in the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy suggests that “narrative pharmacy”—telling your story to the druggist—can improve “the quality and safety of pharmaceutical health care.”

31

Fight inflammation as you eat. Inflammation-fighting ingredients such as turmeric are trending on Pinterest. Meanwhile, many healthy and trendy foods—from the zoodle (zucchini noodle) and cauliflower rice to nut milks and vegan cheese—are reportedly substitutes for potentially inflammatory ingredients such as gluten, grains and dairy.

32

Put “leisure wear” to work. From new lifestyle brands like Aday, Betabrand and Kit and Ace to activewear stalwarts like Lululemon and Under Armour, the companies that dress you for the gym in “athleisurewear” now want to suit you up for the office in “workleisurewear” so you’re always ready for what the workday holds. Says Katie Warner Johnson, co-founder of the brand Carbon38: “Women who hop on planes like they’re taxis and race between meetings need workwear with activewear DNA.” Now you can look office-appropriate and be comfortable.

33

Test your smoke detector. How recently have you tested your smoke alarm? Says Lt. Todd R. Pomerlau of the Essex County Fire Prevention Division: “Smoke alarms in one- and two-family dwellings should not remain in service longer than 10 years from the date of manufacture.”

34

Do the laundry. Folding clothes has yet to become an Olympic event, but it may help you live longer, says a University at Buffalo study. Looking at 6,000 older women, researchers found that those who did 30 minutes of light household activities such as folding clothes or washing windows had a 12 percent lower risk of dying than their idle counterparts.

35

Use safe drinking glasses. Some color-decorated glassware may be best for “display only.” A British

study found that many tumblers and glasses contained troublesome levels of lead or cadmium on the outside or around the rim. And last year, McDonald’s recalled 12 million Shrek-themed glasses that contained cadmium, which can be dangerous if it flakes off.

36

Choose the right doctor. Survey data show that shared decision-making between patients and doctors—as opposed to patients just following orders—rose 14 percent from 2002 to 2014. So if you’re choosing a new physician, keep the trend going by picking a doc with whom you have an open rapport—better communication will lead to better health.

37

Nuts to you! If you’re nuts about nuts, you’ll probably go on munching them whatever the experts say. But isn’t it nice that a 32year study of 210,000 U.S. adults links nut consumption to a reduced heart-disease rate? You go, experts! Way to crunch the numbers.

40 VISIT A MUSEUM

How can you burnish your knowledge—or your kids’—of history, science and more? The Morris County Central Library in Whippany gives passes to local institutions like the Stickley Museum, Cooper Gristmill and Museum of Early Trades & Crafts, to name a few. (Call the Media Circulation Desk at 973.285.6977 for more information.)

38

Have a game plan when you hit the gym. Looking to start a fitness regimen? Don’t go overboard. “Write down short-term, tangible goals and then from there, expand to more long-term ones,” says Victor Perrotta, personal trainer, NASM, ISSA at New York Sports Club in Montclair. “Plus, try keeping a daily log with gym goals you want to tackle for the day, and mark each off as a win once you accomplish it.”

39

Steer clear of the food court. If you’re watching your weight, beware: Just passing near those burgers and fries and sniffing their aroma may seem harmless, but there lies danger. In a University of Michigan study, “food cues” such as mouthwatering smells and eye-catching menus stimulated the brain, leading participants to consume an average of 220 calories more than a control group when it was time to chow down. (Dieters may wish to use technology to “skip food advertisements that air during TV shows,” says Michelle Joyner, the psychology grad student who led the study.)

Sleep soundly. Attention, snorers and the sleepy: Sleep apnea may be the culprit. Board-certified sleep specialist physicians can tell you if that’s the case—and if it is, how to treat it—after a visit to the RWJ Physician Enterprise Sleep Center in East Brunswick.

Get that flu shot. In 2016–17, the Chicago Tribune reports, only 47 percent of Americans got poked. Let’s do better! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says “herd immunity”— when a preponderance of a community’s members get vaccinated—helps us all, even when shots aren’t 100 percent effective. And no, it’s not too late, as flu season can last until May.

42 TAKE BETTER SNAPS

Today we photo-document our lives with our smart phones, but is that really the best way to capture memories? “Using your phone is convenient, but there are high-quality cameras with interchangeable lenses that fit right into a coat pocket or purse,” says Jerry Harmen, president of Madison PhotoPlus. And with a good camera, he says, “your photos will look great on a big screen and print well.”

43

Start loving peanut butter again. A childhood favorite has emerged from the doghouse—turns out, most of the fat in peanut butter is the heart-healthy unsaturated kind, and good ’ol PB is rich in potassium, magnesium and the antioxidant vitamin E. Try the trendy puffed peanut butter-flavored snack Bamba, made in Israel and available at Trader Joe’s in Florham Park.

44

Join a bowling league. It’s a great way to combine moderate, metabolism-boosting exercise with social interaction. West Orange’s Eagle Rock Lanes has 32 lanes and various leagues for both new and experienced bowlers. You can even start your own league with the bowling center’s help.

45

Visualize your intentions. On the website of the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockbridge, Mass., nutritionist Annie B. Kay says intentions—“I want to have a healthier relationship with my weight,” for instance—are easier to follow than resolutions.

44

47

Be a better bagger. We know you have a cloth bag to bring to the grocery store instead of using the market’s plastic bags, but we also know you keep forgetting it at home. The solution: A hook next to the front door is the perfect place to keep your bag—and remind you to take it with you. Not only will you help the environment, but you’ll have less clutter (and garbage) in your kitchen without all those plastic bags accumulating. Just remember to wash or replace your bag from time to time, as studies show bacteria can accumulate in it.

48

Try the train. If security checks and TSA officials are stressing you at airports, consider a travel alternative: The transcontinental trains of Amtrak (1.800.872.7245) are super-luxe, with lounge cars plus dining cars with white tablecloths and waiters. And out the window, you’ll blissfully watch a beautiful country go by.

49

De-stress with art. Is the “adult coloring” craze for you? A Mayo Clinic psychologist has called it “almost like a volume knob to turn down...the stress response.” You can take a class at the Montclair Art Museum, or make a monthly craft with instructor Agnes Sydoryk at the Pequannock Township Library. (If making your own art is more your style, book open studio time at Geralyn’s Art Studio in Maplewood).

50

Consider a low-FODMAP diet. FODMAP stands for (sorry you asked?) fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols—sugars troublesome for folks with irritable bowel syndrome. A low-FODMAP diet omits apples, cabbage, dairy products and other foods until they’re re-introduced. Ask your doctor about it.

51

Get your hearing checked. Looking at 36 studies, researchers in Dublin found a link between hearing loss and dementia. Experts aren’t sure of the connection—and if losing your hearing indeed increases your chance of dementia—but it sure won’t hurt to have the doc check your ears.

52 REFRESH YOURSELF!

Banish those winter blahs with a treatment at one of the counties’ spas. “If you’re worried about finding the time for a session, just know that a trip to the spa doesn’t have to take up your whole day,” says associate Maria Scholz of Urban Renew in Morristown. “You can come in for a 15or 30-minute session during your lunch break or after work, and leave feeling completely renewed and relaxed!”

HEALTH

BANISHING BACK PAIN LEARN WHAT CAUSES BACK PAIN, HOW IT CAN BE PREVENTED AND WHAT TO DO IF IT STRIKES. BACK PAIN IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON COMPLAINTS for which patients visit their doctors. In fact, experts estimate that nearly 80 percent of people will experience back pain in their lives. Causes of back pain Your back is made of many different moving pieces that connect to help stability and movement. Bones, joints, ligaments and muscles are all intertwined, and injury or damage to any one of them can result in back pain. You can irritate joints, sprain ligaments or rupture discs, sometimes with just a simple movement. Back pain also can be caused by problems and diseases of internal organs, such as kidney stones; blood infections; scoliosis (an abnormal curvature of the spine); arthritis; and types of cancer. How to alleviate symptoms If you experience back pain or an injury, one to two days of rest can help, but resist the urge to stay in bed. Getting up, moving around and taking over-thecounter pain relievers can

help alleviate stiffness, improve mobility and aid recovery. Applying heat to a sore back can increase blood flow and speed recovery of acute or chronic back pain. Treating with ice can reduce inflammation and ease pain. Sometimes alternating between the two is the best remedy. Trial and error is the best guide when figuring out what eases your particular symptoms most effectively. Exercise is not advised for treatment of acute back pain, but stretching, yoga and core strengthening can help alleviate chronic back pain. See a physical therapist or take a class to learn how to do these exercises properly. When to see a doctor Most of the time, back pain will subside on its own with or without treatment. However, it’s a good idea to see a doctor if you have tingling or numbness, if the pain is the result of a fall or injury, or if the pain is severe and doesn’t improve with rest. It’s also important to be evaluated by a doctor if you have pain together with trouble urinating, numbness or weakness in your legs, fever or unintentional weight loss. These could be signs of a more serious problem.

AS WINTER WINDS DOWN, THERE’S NO BETTER TIME TO HIT THE SLOPES: DEALS AND SPECIALS ARE BEING OFFERED NEAR AND FAR, BECKONING LOCAL SKIERS TO ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS. BY DARIUS AMOS

SPRING STARTS ON MARCH 20, BUT LET’S FACE it—the air is still too cool to put away the parka. No worries, though, because after a long winter, it’s time to actually enjoy the snow! Ski trips in March offer special benefits to those who can make them happen. In fact, this month is widely considered one of the best to ski, snowboard and socialize. Sunshine is abundant, so you’ll be on the slopes longer and soaking in some vitamin D. Temperatures will be warmer but still cold enough for snow and snowmaking. And there are plenty of deals—resorts typically slash prices on lift tickets and rentals. So if you haven’t gone downhill or slalomed yet, visit one (or more) of the following nearby resorts. They’re all powder-packed with fun for all ages!

48

CAMPGAW MOUNTAIN

Mahwah Campgaw is so close that checking conditions is rarely necessary—just look outside the window! Just minutes from Rte. 287 in Bergen County, it’s near enough that you don’t need a lot of time to plan a trip: Just throw on a coat and go. It features a large course for beginners (lessons are available), two double black diamond trails for experts and everything in between, so there’s a slope for every skill level. And if your local neighborhood hill has lost its luster, snow tubing at Campgaw is in full swing this month, providing thrills and spills (the fun kind, of course) for all ages.

MOUNTAIN CREEK RESORT

Vernon This bustling Sussex County resort just an hour north of Morristown offers an adrenaline rush for friends, families, couples and X-Games hopefuls. A daily pass here is your ticket to eight lifts on four mountain peaks, each with trails suitable for all levels. Freestyle skiers and snow boarders head straight to the terrain park, where an assortment of moguls, rails, boxes and ramps await. The resort also holds a variety of events in March, including the Wednesday night fun races and the “Not-So Legendary” banked slalom run. When you’re done on the slopes, stay for concerts (The Machine, a Pink Floyd cover band performs March 10) and open mic nights every Wednesday night in March. Check the resort’s website for more concert dates.

MOUNT PETER SKI AREA

Warwick, N.Y. Macy’s started the Mount Peter ski area in 1936 to show off the department store’s ski apparel, and it’s been one of the Empire State’s most popular facilities ever since. Beginners can take advantage of free ski and snowboarding lessons, offered all winter long, while snow-loving vets will get thrills on the 14 trails. New for the season is the Quad Lift, a four-person chair that provides access to the beginner and intermediate slopes. A 600foot snow tubing hill is open every day for all thrill seekers. Skiing is open for all during Scout Weekend, March 10–11, but scouts and their families can take advantage of special discounts on lessons, lifts and rentals. And don’t miss the annual Spring Rally on March 18, featuring live music, fun races, “big air” contests and more!

HUNTER MOUNTAIN

Hunter, N.Y. A two-and-a-half-hour drive up the New York State Thruway leads to this historic ski destination. Renowned for its snow-making capacities—the facility was the first in the world to have 100 percent snow-making coverage of a mountain—this premier resort has 58 runs over 240 acres, including a pair of terrain parks for hot dogging boarders and skiers as well as a twomile-long trail for marathoners. Snow tubing and weekend zip-lining over the snowy region is also available. (Bundle up!) March’s schedule includes special programs like the Sam Adams Air & Après Show with Olympic snowboarding bronze medalist Scotty Lago (March 10), the annual Bumps and BBQ Party (March 24) and Ladies’ Day (discounted prices for women every Wednesday throughout the month).

CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN RESORT

Tannersville, Penn. With 35 slopes covering nearly 170 skiable acres, Camelback is one of the Northeast’s winter hotspots. Nestled in the Keystone State’s Pocono region, the mountain features the Nile Mile, a one-mile trail that includes an 800-foot vertical drop. (Daredevils, rejoice!) Rookies and novices can catch their breath: Camelback offers ski and snowboarding lessons for all ages as well as the largest snow tubing park in the country. A special triple ticket is now available—it’s a card preloaded with three lift tickets for the price of two. When the skiing ends for the day, the resort hosts special evening events and live music throughout March.

MORRIS COUNTY’S

TOP

DENTISTS 2018 TO HELP YOU FIND GREAT DENTAL CARE, Morris/Essex Health & Life commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of hundreds of practicing and active dentists across Morris County. Dentists were asked to choose which of their peers they consider the very best, across seven different practice areas—endodontics, general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics. All the final honorees were fact-checked with the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System. The highest vote getters within each specialty who are in good standing with the state are included here in the second annual “Morris County’s Top Dentists” list. There are many other good dentists practicing in Morris County who may not be included on this list; we recommend that you consider “Morris County’s Top Dentists” and other resources before scheduling your next dental procedure.

AESTHETIC FAMILY DENTISTRY, P.A.

35 W. Main St., Denville, NJ 07834 • 937.627.3617 • aestheticfamilydentistry.com AESTHETIC FAMILY DENTISTRY OF DENVILLE, in business for over 40 years, offers a highly technological yet holistic approach to dentistry not often found in a family practice. All three dentists, Dr. Derek Fine, D.M.D., Dr. Jenni Kwiatkowski and Dr. Alan B. Steiner, focus on the overall well-being of each patient and specifically, how dental health affects the body. They look for homeopathic options wherever and whenever possible, preferring to utilize natural remedies in an effort to avoid the use of drugs and chemicals. For many procedures, they employ an Ozone Generator, which kills bacteria, viruses and fungus without the use of chemicals or other medication. Ozone is most often used during periodontal treatment, disinfecting teeth prior to fillings or crowns, desensitizing, and rinsing after surgery. Patients that have issues with taking traditional impressions can take advantage of a 3-D scanner, raising their comfort level and overall experience during such procedures. Additionally, a wide array of traditional and advanced dental treatments is available, as well as cosmetic dentistry, Botox and a variety of dermal fillers. Aesthetic Family Dentistry is especially proficient when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint

TopDentist_Morris_0218_final.indd 57

disorder (TMJ) and sleep breathing disorders and headaches. TMJ may be treated with a combination of therapies, including massage therapy, TENS and the use of FDA-approved oral appliances. Patients very often find immediate success treating sleep apnea, migraines and symptoms associated with TMJ. All three dentists in the practice are dedicated to continuing education and have extensive expertise far beyond the required training and hours. A graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Dr. Fine is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and has advanced training in Neuromuscular Dentistry and Occlusion. Dr. Kwiatkowski, a graduate of NYU College of Dentistry, has additional training in cosmetic dentistry, implants and neuromuscular orthodontics. Dr. Steiner graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and is proficient in cosmetic reconstruction, prosthodontics, periodontal surgery and the revolutionary Chao Pinhole Surgery Technique®. DENVILLE DENTIST

75 Bloomfield Ave., Suite 205, Denville, NJ 07834 • 973.627.3363 • denvilledentist.com ONE CONVERSATION with Denville Dentist’s Dr. Adam Kimowitz is all it takes to see the passion that he has for his work and for his patients. His father started their practice 40 years ago, and although they offer general family dental care such as cleanings, fillings and root canal for patients of all ages, Dr. Kimowitz with the help of his father took their practice several steps further as they continue to focus on complex oral rehabilitation, placing and restoring hundreds of implants yearly. He and his father are driven by a need to help those who have been socially affected by their teeth. “If their teeth are so damaged that they don’t smile, they often have trouble with their personal relationships and are perceived differently than they would like,” he says. Many of the practice’s patients’ teeth have been affected by a variety of diseases, and they are psychologically scarred as a result. “It’s an honor to help such people,” he says. “We look at them as

TopDentist_Morris_0218_final.indd 59

patients, not just mouths. We address their fears and concerns and feel successful once we connect with them, so that they trust us to help them.” Dr. Kimowitz and his father create not only new smiles and a second chance for their patients, but relationships with them as well. As the treatment becomes more complex, so does the relationship. “I take the trust and responsibility that my patients place in me very seriously and hold myself accountable for the results,” he says. For those who are trapped in a never-ending cycle of root canals and pain, he takes pride in transforming their lives in such a meaningful way. The office is equipped with the latest technology and equipment so that they can achieve the best results: a patient can be outfitted with an entirely new set of teeth in a mere three weeks. “At the end of the day, we want every patient to achieve the outcome they are looking for and be pain-free.”

Passaic Ave., Bloomfield, NJ 07003 • 973.338.1383 • dentistryforchildrenpa.com SEEING THE TRANSFORMATION of children afraid of dentist visits become patients who don’t want to leave, is the favorite part of their job, claim Drs. Robert Spiegel and Hassam Sultan. Dentistry for Children is a full-service pediatric and orthodontic practice that has been caring for the dental needs of kids in surrounding communities by providing comprehensive, individualized treatment plans tailored to pediatric and specialneeds patients since 1966. We work with patients starting at 1 year old up to 30 and we have no age limit since our patients love to stay with us. Both Dr. Sultan and Dr. Spiegel provide comfort and compassion in service, while integrating new technologies for a better pediatric dental experience. The dentists introduced an Atraumatic Filling technique to their practice with the use of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). This is a quick, painless alternative to “drill and fill,” comforting to parents of young, apprehensive children with cavities. Both dentists are skilled in treating patients with special health care needs, those who have experienced trauma, and in interceptive orthodontics and are active members of prestigious dental associations. We pride ourselves on being a team that kids love to come to and it is our priority to ensure that none of our patients fear coming to the dentist. RESTAURANT REVIEW

CAFÉ MOBAY

CAFÉ MOBAY GIVES OFF A SUBDUED first impression, from its northern Bloomfield storefront (their signage is barely lit in the evening) to its simple launch page online. But that’s about all that is understated at this Jamaican establishment: Once you walk inside, you’ll discover that the restaurant does live up to its Montego Bay namesake. The mood instantly changes indoors. Your eyes are blasted by iridescent tropical colors (think luminous oranges and blues), while a rotating medley of reggae fusion and Jamaican folk music boosts the ambience. And then there’s the delightful menu, a curated selection of Caribbean comforts that, when served, are plated like a Michelinstarred establishment. My dining companion and I started with salt fish fritters, four lightly battered and fried cod cakes flavored lightly with West Indian spices and a zesty honey ginger sauce. Our second appetizer, mango shrimp, was just as palatable. Each of the five jumbo shrimp was cooked just right and dressed with a sweet Jamaican barbecue glaze, fresh mango, onion and parsley. After wrestling with different entrée options (mostly the braised oxtail), I ordered the curry goat stew—and the dish didn’t disappoint. While not as widely celebrated as beef and chicken in the U.S., goat is rising in popularity thanks to the influx of different cultures and restaurants in key neighborhoods (Montclair, for example). And Café Mobay’s version of this classic Jamaican dish is an absolute must-try for all tastes: The slow-cooked goat is tender to the bone and picks up flavor from the peppers and mild curry sauce. Though delicious when forked on its own, the chunks of lean meat are played up even more when combined with the accompanying

84

white rice and steamed cabbage. Having never tried Jamaican cuisine in the past, my friend ordered jerk chicken at my suggestion. This fragrant and fiery dish is a staple on any Jamaican menu, and it’s a memorable one at Café Mobay. A generous portion of smoky, sweet and savory (yes, all three!) chicken is served over two whole plantains and a side of coconut rice. “There are so many flavors, none of which overpowers the other,” my companion said. Café Mobay can alter the level of spiciness for every plate, so she didn’t need a glass of fresh pineapple juice for relief—but she ordered one (and savored it) anyway. You won’t find an expansive dessert menu here, but every diner should save room for a pair of gems: the hot bread pudding and homemade peach cobbler. Each was served with soft vanilla ice cream that quickly melted into the bowls, adding a rich, creamy flavor to the sweet treats. I gravitated toward the bread pudding, which got better with every bite. And the same could be said about the cobbler which, after every spoonful, drew very audible sighs of satisfaction from my companion. The restaurant’s overall cozy and friendly environment is matched only by the gourmet-style food that’s served. Though Italian, Greek, Chinese, Japanese and Indian cuisines might have a stronghold on one’s dining-out rotation, Café Mobay will make many consider adding it to the cycle. —Darius Amos Café Mobay, 1039 Broad St., Bloomfield, 973.337.8460, cafemobaybloomfieldnj.com
