SAINT BARNABAS MEDICAL CENTER CONTINUES TO BE successful, growing and building best in class clinical services. Following the opening of our Cooperman Family Pavilion the previous autumn, we strove throughout the year to make our enlarged campus not just a place where top-quality, lifesaving medicine was practiced, but also a comfortable and caring environment for patients, their families and visitors. The care we provide is recognized nationally including receiving our 14th consecutive “A” ratings from The Leapfrog Group, which rigorously assesses hospital quality and safety. Placing us in the select company of just 42 other hospitals in the United States. We also achieved Magnet recognition, the gold standard for nursing excellence. And SBMC was named “Most Wired Hospital” for the sixth year in a row. Our growth in 2018 was experienced in a variety of clinical services including our obstetricians delivering 5,918 babies, 33,491 patients who were admitted and caring for 98,663 people in our Emergency Department. Our Renal and Pancreas Division continued to offer one of the nation’s largest kidney transplant programs, performing 280 transplants, 154 of them from living donors. Finally, in 2018 we invested in the future. Saint Barnabas Medical Center became one of the first organizations in New Jersey to install the Elition 3.0T Wide-Bore Digital High-Definition MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) system, which provides a quicker, quieter, pleasanter MRI experience. And we launched an expansion of our Emergency Department that will enable it to handle 130,000 visits per year. These are just a few examples and there are many more, of course. But no snapshot of the recent past quite does justice to the present. Health care isn’t standing still for an instant, and neither is Saint Barnabas Medical Center. We are building on our 2018 achievements. We are advancing better ways to prevent, detect and cure disease while keeping our patients healthy and protecting the quality of their lives. We are embracing the latest technology and honoring our relationship with the community whose trust we must keep earning every day. We wish you good health. Regards,

YOUR TIME TO SHINE FACE IT: AFTER A SEASON of feasting and frivolity, February and March can feel a bit lackluster. We’ve made stern resolutions to lose weight, exercise more, make more time to meditate—and the list goes on and on. We at Morris/Essex Health & Life don’t subscribe to such bullying tactics. We’re not here to chastise you but to inform, support and encourage you. That’s why we’ve reimagined our “52 Tips for a Better You,” as the article takes a kinder, gentler approach to your well-being. For example, we encourage you to take a well-deserved break from work. Leslie Tubul, a social worker who practices in Montclair and Caldwell, notes a correlation between time away from the office and improved health, as a tough work environment can lead to anxiety and stress. Taking a vacation, she says, can help both physically and emotionally. Turn to page 32 for more helpful hints and advice from experts in Morris and Essex counties. Our seasonal health story touches on ways to care for your body. Do you avoid the outdoors entirely during winter? We have six easy indoor activities that ensure you don’t become sedentary this season. Check out “Moving Right Along!” on page 30. What else will you find in this issue? On page 44, we provide three recipes that put a delicious spin on classic comfort foods. And on page 42, read about five great escapes—each known for family-friendly attractions and a must-try signature dish. Whatever your personal focus, here’s wishing you and your family good health and happiness.

CULINARY CORNER A SLICE OF HEAVEN Whether you prefer a pie from a corner Italian restaurant or a large chain, there are plenty of reasons to try Sabatino’s in Maplewood. How does a roasted zucchini pizza sound? Cauliflower crust? Fresh and abundant toppings? They do all of that and more behind the leadership of owner and Culinary Institute of America-trained Sabatino Perrotta. While pizza’s their game, diners who eat in or take out can also order healthy salads, flavorful garlic knots, loaded meatball subs—everything but the kitchen sink (and Perrotta’s Marsal & Sons pizza oven). SABATINO’S, 513 VALLEY ST., MAPLEWOOD, 973.327.9977

MEXICAN FLAIR Nothing against fast casual chains that serve overflowing burrito bowls and tacos, but we know many seek out Benji’s Taqueria Mexican Grill when fresh Tex-Mex is on the mind. Here’s some good news: The restaurant has opened a location in Caldwell (it already has a spot in West Orange), much to the delight of those who crave authentic dishes like a pollo asado sandwich or arroz Acapulco. Of course, you can order the familiar burrito and enchilada, but you can also fill up on tortas, chilaquiles and other Mexican platters. ¡Ándale! PHO A HEARTY MEAL ’Tis the season for a hearty soup, and there are few options better than a bowl of pho. Morris County residents can get a taste of Vietnam’s national noodle soup at Pho Binh Duong, now open in Parsippany and offering the dish in several varieties (brisket, tripe, pork, shrimp and more). But there’s more to Vietnamese cuisine than that. The restaurant serves up rice vermicelli bowls, crispy noodle dishes and other vegetable and meat entrees— everything you’re looking pho. GET ROWING, GET GOING

Deadlift form spot on? Top cadence in the cycling studio? Free climb walls with ease? Whether you’re part of the fitness elite or simply kicking off a resolution, make 2019 the year you take up rowing. These indoor classes aren’t just trending now, they’re quickly becoming a fixture in regular training routines—the lowimpact workouts engage the entire body, burn more calories and work up a bigger sweat than indoor cycling, running and other aerobic exercises. A 30-minute row session, for instance, can burn up to 300 calories. NitroFlex (169 Rte. 206, Chester, 908.879.1006), for example, offers rowing classes for all ages and abilities, and CrossFit Nutley (2 Baltimore St., Nutley, 973.542.8480) includes rowing exercises within their cross-training workouts. Get on the boat because this workout isn’t sinking!

KUDOS NOW TRENDING

Four hundred dollars can buy a lot: a fancy winter parka or a modern piece of furniture, for example. In Danielle Guizio’s case, she built an empire. The Fairfield resident was named to Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list for Art and Style, earning the honor for her eponymous line of streetwear and graphic T-shirts. The brand, which launched in 2014, already has global acclaim and has gained the favor of celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber. You can get the styles directly from her website or at boutiques in fashion meccas Milan and Hong Kong.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING AT AGE 13?

West Orange High School freshman Marley Dias can say that she’s already making a difference in the world, having been named to Time magazine’s “Top 25 Most Influential Teens of 2018.” She was recognized for her 2015 #1000BlackGirlBooks project, distributing books featuring black female protagonists to more than 11,000 organizations around the world. Now that’s making a difference.

NUN ON THE RUN

Sister Mary Elizabeth Lloyd has made running before morning prayers a habit. The 69-year-old resident of Villa Walsh, an allgirls’ prep school in Morristown, logs about 30 miles a week while training for various races—which she runs for charity. In April, she’ll run the Cooper River Bridge 10K in South Carolina for the Religious Teachers Filippini mission. She previously ran 20-mile events in all 50 states while fundraising for orphans.

FOR THE

THRILL

OF IT

Scoot over, Mary Higgins Clark and Harlan Coben: There’s a new suspense author in the town. Morristown resident Steven Max Russo’s debut novel, Thieves, is making waves among critics and readers alike. The page-turner takes place in Morris County—Mendham, in particular—and tells the story of Esmeralda, a hard-working housekeeper by day and restaurant employee at night. She gets trapped by both circumstance and greed, and eventually must defend herself against one of her partners in crime. Though his thrillers often take a dark turn (his next book, The Dead Don’t Sleep, will be released this year), Russo is a regular Jersey guy. He’s an outdoorsman who enjoys fishing, going to the gym and lying on the beach with a cold brew. “Unfortunately, I’m not very devoted to, nor good at, any of my hobbies,” he says, “except maybe lying on the beach.” Thieves is available at bookstores and amazon.com.

NO SPEED LIMITS

Next time you kvetch about your movie download taking forever, try a moment of pity for the rest of the U.S.A. New Jersey actually has the nation’s fastest Internet download speed at 124.45 megabits per second (Mbps), according to a test conducted by Speedtest.net. In other words, users on Verizon’s fastest network, for example, can download a 1GB file in a minute. The same file could take nearly two days to download if the user had 56.6 Kbps technology (you remember, the speed of the standard 1990s dial-up modem). Jersey City has the fastest download speed in the state and is the thirdfastest city in the country with 93.97 Mbps. Verizon is the fastest service provider here with 130.91 Mbps.

LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE Residents have been saying it for a long time but now it’s confirmed: Parsippany-Troy Hills is the best place to live in New Jersey, according to Money magazine. The publication spotlights the town’s low crime rate and successful education system, noting that 96 percent of the high schoolers here graduate, and students “outpace the national math and reading test averages by wide margins.” “I lived in Hoboken for most of my 20s,” says Parsippany native Emily Thorsen, now 41. “When it was time to settle down and start a family, I moved back home to Parsippany.” Read more about Parsippany on page 20.

BEACHY KEEN AT FUNPLEX

Beach season is still a few months away, but you and your family can soak up much of the Jersey Shore vibe now. How so? Workers are putting the finishing touches on a $4 million renovation project on East Hanover’s Funplex. When complete, the facility will include new bowling alleys with wait staff and private VIP lanes, updated go-karts, a boardwalk-themed section complete with shore food— platters, funnel cakes and milkshakes—and more. “We just moved to the area so we’re excited to check it out,” says Nutley’s Francis Mondesi. “It’s a great way to keep the kids active, even when the weather outside isn’t cooperating.” THE FUNPLEX, 182 RTE. 10 W., EAST HANOVER, 973.428.1166, FUNPLEXEASTHANOVER.COM MORRIS/ESSEX HE ALTH & LIFE

FOR MEN ONLY

HOT LOOKS FOR SPRING LOOK FOR THESE NINE FASHION PHENOMENA WHEN THE WARM WEATHER RETURNS.

We visited the fashion capitals of Europe—Milan, Florence, London and Paris—and brought back some trends to expect this spring and summer:

1

DOUBLE-BREASTED SUITS Yes, what’s old is new again. This classic appears in a plethora of offerings heading into spring 2019. While the traditional models are available, designers also are starting to push a new one-and-a-half breasted jacket that has more of a shape and appears less boxy. And if you’re looking for a trendier version, there also are a variety of oversized suits being introduced.

2

A RIOT OF COLOR Designers throughout Europe have been showing various shades of light blues, pinks, oranges, reds and yellows in their collections. You’ll have a chance to step out of your navy, black and gray wardrobe to embrace these wonderful hues, due to arrive stateside this spring. You needn’t wear head-to-toe pink; a pop of red or baby blue will definitely help you stand out from the crowd.

3

OVER-THE-KNEE SHORTS We live in an age of oversized, roomy silhouettes, so it’s only natural for our shorts to follow suit. While a looser short allows for more “breathing room” in the summer heat, it also makes for a great look to pair with sandals and a resort shirt. Search for styles that are a bit high-waisted and fit just below the knee. Otherwise you’ll just look like a typical sloppy tourist, and we don’t want that.

4

SMALL SUNGLASSES In a trend that recalls The Matrix, sunglasses are shrinking—and not just for women. Often done in a rosecolored glass, these lenses are barely big enough to cover your eyeballs. But even if you’re squinting, you’ll look sharp as a knife.

14

5

RELAXED TROUSERS This trend has been sneaking back on the runways and into the streets since 2015. You can style trousers with a tucked-in shirt or a polo for a Riviera vibe, or layer them with a double-breasted blazer and a T-shirt for more of a ’90s attitude. Look for pants that have a higher waist and a carrot leg, which flatter multiple body shapes.

6

7

FANNY PACKS We can’t escape this polarizing accessory: an unapologetically useful, but not always aesthetically pleasing “tourist” bag. Whether you call it a fanny pack, a bum bag or a waist pack, this carryall is back from the grave in a big way. Clip it around your waist—or emulate early adopters who wear this shape across their chests. (Yes, you may have to feature it across your body or under your armpit to reach peak-level coolness.)

8

STATEMENT STRIPES Stripes are everywhere. Far from the classic pinstripe, next season’s stripes are thick, bright and bold. They’ve been spotted on everything from tops and jackets to suits and trousers. If you’d like to try this look, opt for one eye-catching striped piece at a time. You say you’re a veteran style risk-taker? Go for a suit with a thick, bold stripe from head to toe.

SUITS THAT LIVE LARGE The suit of spring 2019 promises to be a tad oversized and a bit dramatic, often in technical performance fabrics. It will range in color from the typical navy to bold neon hues. We’ve seen this oversized trend happening across clothing categories for a few seasons now, and tailoring departments are freshening up accordingly.

CAMP-COLLAR SHIRTS

With the collar overlapping the lapels, these shirts brilliantly take a tailored ensemble down a notch. Whether you’re drawn to a vibrant pattern or a subdued one, camp-collar shirts have a natural affinity for any jacket in your closet.

TALK OF THE TOWN

WELCOME TO

Parsippany IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY THIS MORRIS COUNTY TOWN HAS LONG BEEN DEEMED ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO LIVE IN NEW JERSEY—AND IN THE U.S.

n ESTABLISHED:

1928 n POPULATION:

53,910 n WEBSITE:

PARSIPPANY.NET

It’s kind of a big deal to be ranked on Money magazine’s list of Best Places to Live in the United States almost every year since 2006 (nabbing the 26th spot in 2018). But Parsippany-Troy Hills, known as Parsippany, isn’t cocky about it. This welcoming, family-friendly 25-square-mile town has a lot going for it, including some of the best public schools in the state, low rates of both crime and unemployment, diversity and the rare combination of affordability and proximity to New York City. No wonder many Parsippany residents become lifers.

HOME, SWEET HOME

Thinking about buying or selling a house here? The median home value in Parsippany is $427,400, up 3.1 percent over the past year. Home values are expected to increase 4.1 percent within the next year, according to Zillow.

GIRL POWER Now in its 26th year of operation, the Women’s Theater Company is an acting advocacy organization and one of the only ones in New Jersey solely dedicated to the inclusion of women in all aspects of theater production. It was founded in 1993 by Barbara Krajkowski, mother of Emmy- and Tony-winning actress (and Parsippany native) Jane Krakowski.

The largest town in Morris County has a bountiful selection of restaurants. Eccola Italian Bistro and Gourmet Cafe are the locals’ favorites for Italian cuisine. Fu Sha Sushi Bar gets rave reviews for its fresh sushi and innovative rolls. And book a table at Marakesh Restaurant for the full Middle Eastern experience; its food and ambiance are authentic to Arabic and Moroccan cultures, plus they put on a can’t-miss belly dancing show on select nights.

ON THE JOB

Parsippany-Troy Hills is a mere 35 miles from New York City, but there are plenty of job opportunities right in town, as many major corporations are based here, including Kings Supermarkets, Lexus, Wyndham Worldwide, PNY Technologies and Ricola.

ON THE ROCKS One of a handful of Parsippany’s historic sites is the Rock Shelter, known to natives as the Rock House. Here, visitors can view 3,000-year-old glacier boulders. The landmark also contains another rare find in New Jersey, American Indian petroglyphs; the drawings are believed to have been carved into the rock between 500 B.C. and 500 A.D.

FAMOUS PARSIPPANY FACES

From left to right: Actress Jane Krakowski of Ally McBeal, 30 Rock and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was born and raised here; Danielle Jonas, wife of Jonas Brothers’ oldest member, Kevin, grew up in and attended beauty school in Parsippany; engineer and former NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman graduated from Parsippany High School in 1986.

GO GREEN

This town isn’t just for urbanites. Parsippany is home to more than 30 parks, including Mountain Way Park, Lake Parsippany Park, Cameron Dog Park and its largest Knoll Park, which has walking trails, a nature center, a golf course and a playground. The town is so green, in fact, it’s been an Arbor Day Foundation-designated Tree City USA for 43 years running.

A HOUSE OF HISTORY

Built in 1752, the Livingston Benedict House served as a haven from British troops in the Revolutionary War for William Livingston, the first elected governor of New Jersey. Now, the house is privately owned but is open to visitors each spring or summer during Morris County’s annual Revolutionary Times weekend.

DINING OUT

DID YOU KNOW? Parsippany’s name comes from the Lenni Lenape word “parsipanong,” which translates to “the place where the river winds through the valley.”

Laufer, DaLena, Jensen & BraDLey, LLc JAMES C. JENSEN has been a trial lawyer for over thirty years. For the past ten years, he has been a partner with the law firm of Laufer, Dalena, Jensen & Bradley, LLC. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Jensen ran his own successful law practice in Morristown and had associations with other well recognized law firms. While the Laufer firm focuses primarily on family law, Mr. Jensen has the most varied practice of the lawyers at the firm. Although he does devote a substantial amount of his time to matrimonial and family law, Mr. Jensen also has a strong personal injury, workers’ compensation and municipal court practice. Additionally, he handles real estate and commercial litigation and transactions. In 2017, Mr. Jensen settled a personal injury case for $740,000.00, despite an initial settlement offer of $100,000.00. He has handled workers’ compensation cases resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars of awards in last year alone. He has been appointed to serve as a panelist on the Morris County Matrimonial Early Settlement Panel for the last sixteen years and has been recognized as a Super Lawyer as listed in New Jersey Monthly magazine for the last six years. In addition to being a skilled trial lawyer, Mr. Jensen has also been qualified by the State of New Jersey as a court approved matrimonial mediator. He has been successful in resolving a majority of the cases in which he mediates. While he greatly enjoys his trial work, Mr. Jensen also understands that settlement outside of court is often the preferred result for his clients. “My strategy has always been to take a reasonable settlement position but at the same time prepare the case for trial. When the other side understands that you are prepared and not afraid of trial, they usually settle.” Let Mr. Jensen guide you on the road to a successful result. He is available for a free consultation by calling the number below.

THE

#1 DANGER TO WOMEN

FOR FEMALES, HEART DISEASE HAS FAMILIAR RISK FACTORS—BUT SOMETIMES DIFFERENT SYMPTOMS. ASK MOST WOMEN WHAT HEALTH THREAT THEY ARE MOST worried about, and they will likely say breast cancer or perhaps ovarian cancer. Statistically speaking, they are worrying about the wrong diseases. “Cardiovascular disease is the number-one killer in women, far exceeding any other diagnosis,” says Gary Rogal, M.D., chief of Cardiology at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. In a recent conversation, Morris/Essex Health & Life asked Dr. Rogal what women need to know about this deadly disease.

SOME PEOPLE STILL BELIEVE HEART DISEASE IS “A MAN’S PROBLEM.” WHY ARE THEY WRONG? Women are prejudiced toward breast and ovarian cancer, but those numbers are dwarfed by heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease—which actually strikes more women than men—is deadlier than all forms of cancer combined. One in 31 Gary Rogal, M.D. American women dies from breast cancer each year, but one in three deaths is caused by heart disease.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR HEART DISEASE IN WOMEN? They are the same as in men: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight. Family history is also a risk. But many people with a family history think there is nothing they can do about that. They say, “What’s the use?” The reality is, there is evidence that lifestyle changes can mitigate family history. There is a lot you can do.

WHAT ARE SOME CHANGES WOMEN CAN MAKE TO LOWER RISK? Maintain a healthy weight. Control other risk factors like diabetes and blood pressure. Exercise regularly. Keep stress under control. The fact is, lifestyle modifications and attempts to reduce risk are extremely potent. I tell my patients that half of your outcome is based on what I do, the other half is based on what you do. There are not a lot of diseases like that.

ARE WOMEN’S SYMPTOMS DIFFERENT FROM MEN’S? They can be. Women often have the same symptoms as men, like chest pain, pain in the arm and shortness of breath. But they can also feel pain in other places, such as the upper back and neck. More often than not, patients don’t experience actual pain; they describe it more as pressure or constriction. And it can be very subtle. Many women say they felt some discomfort but didn’t think it meant anything. You should throw out the idea that severity is the standard. A good chunk of heart attacks aren’t recognized. You may think it’s indigestion or a muscle pull in the chest wall. If you experience something you believe may be a heart problem, you need to see a physician right away—especially if you’re in a high-risk group.

COLORECTAL CANCER:

WHY SCREENING COUNTS

THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY DISEASE CAN BE THWARTED WITH REGULAR SCREENINGS. THE PROOF IS IN THE NUMBERS. IF YOU WANT YOUR CAR TO LAST, YOU HAVE TO TAKE care of it. The same is true of your body, says Mark Gilder, M.D., a colorectal surgeon at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and a member of the Barnabas Health Medical Group. “You have regular service performed on your car,” he says. “Well, colon cancer screening is one of the services you have to have done on you.” Colonoscopy, which he calls “the gold standard” of colorectal cancer screening, is safe and effective in finding and treating polyps—precancerous growths—early, before they can cause harm. “When you can actually prevent the disease from

happening with a test as beneficial and specific as colonoscopy, we all need to take advantage of it,” he says. If you’re 45 or older and you haven’t had a colonoscopy in the past decade, call to schedule one today. If you need more reasons why, take a look at the numbers. RWJBarnabas Health and Saint Barnabas Medical Center, in partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey—the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center— bring a world-class team of researchers and specialists to fight alongside you, providing close-to-home access to the latest treatment and clinical trials.

45

60%

That’s the proportion of colorectal cancer deaths that could be prevented with screening, says Fight Colon Cancer.

92%

That’s the age colorectal cancer screening should begin, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). However, if you have a first-degree relative—parent or sibling—who has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer, it is recommended that you begin screening 10 years before the age when that person was diagnosed. If your father got colorectal cancer at 53, for example, you should get your first screening at 43.

This is the approximate five-year survival rate for people whose colorectal cancer is treated at stage 1, before it has spread, according to the ACS. Once the cancer has spread to distant organs (such as the liver or lungs), the rate becomes less than 15 percent. That’s why early detection is so important.

22%

Colorectal cancer rates among people younger than 50 continue to rise, increasing by 22 percent from 2000 to 2013. The ACS says that the reasons for the increase have yet to be confirmed, but factors that may be behind this rise include increasing rates of excess body weight brought on by unhealth eating habits and leading a sedentary lifestyle.

26

0

This is the number of symptoms many people experience in the early stages of the disease. Most colorectal cancers start as a growth on the inner lining of the colon or rectum called a polyp. Some polyps can change into cancer over time—usually over many years—but many polyps never become cancerous. Polyps may cause no symptoms at first, which is why screening is so important. Screening with a colonoscopy not only detects the polyps, it allows the doctor to remove them before they develop into cancer.

10 50+

RISK FACTORS FOR COLORECTAL CANCER

Being older than 50. More than 90 percent of cases are diagnosed after age 50.

Having a diet high in fat (especially animal fat) and low in calcium, folate and fiber.

Having a family history of colorectal cancer. Nearly 1 in 3 people who develop colorectal cancer have other family members who have had it.

Smoking cigarettes.

Having certain genetic mutations. About 5 percent of cases are caused by inherited gene changes.

Being overweight or obese.

Having a personal history of polyps or previous colon cancer.

Being physically inactive.

Having a history of ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.

Drinking too much alcohol.

33%

One in three people are not up-todate with colorectal cancer screening, according to the advocacy group Fight Colon Cancer.

That’s how many deaths colorectal cancer was projected to cause in 2018. The good news, though, is that the death rate from colorectal cancer has declined in people 50 and older by 32 percent since 2000. This trend is thought to be largely a result of screening, which can prevent cancer by detecting and removing precancerous polyps.

3

97,220

That’s how many new cases of colon cancer the ACS estimated would be diagnosed in 2018. Another 43,003 cases of rectal cancer were also expected. The numbers for colon cancer are fairly equal in men and women, but a larger number of men than women are diagnosed with rectal cancer, the ACS says.

>

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., according to the ACS.

Mark E. Gilder, M.D.

COLONOSCOPY ACTUALLY DOES TWO THINGS AT ONCE,” DR. GILDER SAYS. “IT LETS US MAKES THE DIAGNOSIS AND PROVIDE IMMEDIATE TREATMENT.” THE SCOPE USED TO DETECT POLYPS ALSO CAN REMOVE THOSE POLYPS BEFORE THEY DEVELOP FURTHER. THE PHYSICIAN SENDS THE TISSUE FOR BIOPSY TO DETERMINE IF THEY HAVE BECOME CANCEROUS.

156,000

“If everyone got screened, I believe we could eliminate 156,000 people from needing surgery for this condition,” Dr. Gilder says.

Throughout March, Saint Barnabas Medical Center and the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center will have numerous programs to raise awareness about colorectal cancer, including a life-size inflatable colon to showcase normal colon tissue, a normal polyp, a malignant polyp, Crohn’s disease, colon cancer and advanced colon cancer. RICHARD RITHOLZ, B.S.B.A.

Richard Ritholz retired from Elliott Management Corporation (EMC) in April 2018. While at EMC, he led a team that traded energy, metals, agricultural commodities and soft commodities in the firm’s New York, London and Hong Kong offices. During his 13 years there, assets under the firm’s management increased from $4 billion to $35 billion, making Elliott one of the largest global commodity firms. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Olin Business

School in 1984, Ritholz went on to earn a master’s degree in business from Columbia University. His first job was with Mobil Oil Corporation, where his positions included head of European natural gas trading, based in The Hague, Netherlands. Ritholz left Mobil in 1998 to start JMR Energy Inc., an energy commodity trading adviser to institutional accounts and high-net-worth individuals. Ritholz and his wife, Linda, are longtime supporters of Washington University, and he was elected to the Board of Trustees earlier this year. The couple established the Richard and Linda Ritholz Scholarship at the university, and they host an annual dinner for Washington University’s basketball teams when they travel to New York. Ritholz also serves on Olin Business School’s Advisory Board as well as on the North Jersey Regional Council, of which he is co-chair. The Ritholz family has generously supported Comfort Project 360 at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. They also support the David Falk School of Sport Management and Human Dynamics at Syracuse University, Syracuse University Athletics, and The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, among other organizations. Ritholz is a board member and on the finance committee at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel in South Orange. The Ritholzes reside in Short Hills with their two children.

With the days much shorter and nights much colder this time of year, it’s very easy to become sedentary. Nevertheless, it’s important to stay active during the winter season, especially for seniors, as inactivity can take a toll on both physical health and emotional well-being. Consider these ideas to keep moving indoors, some at home and others nearby. MALL WALKING As a service to their local communities, many indoor shopping malls open their doors early to allow residents the opportunity to walk in a safe, monitored, climate-controlled environment. The Mall at Short Hills opens at 7:30 a.m. Monday-Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday for this purpose; registration for their "Very Important Pacers" program is free of charge with a driver's license. Try the “buddy system” and commit to meeting a friend there once a week and enjoy a coffee or tea afterward. EXERGAMING Popular systems like the Wii Fit and PlayStation Move combine the fun of video games with required physical participation to get you up off the couch and in motion, playing along with what’s happening on-screen. DANCING Whether you’re an old pro or a newbie needing lessons, dancing is one of the most fun and social ways of staying active indoors. It offers an aerobic workout while also honing your stability and balance. And from swing to salsa, there’s a genre to suit nearly every taste. SWIMMING Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise. It’s aerobic, low-impact, go-at-your-own-pace and (if you’d like it to be) social. Check to see if your local community center or YMCA offers discounted passes for seniors.

TAI CHI Although it’s one of the martial arts, Tai Chi is a wonderfully gentle exercise that can improve your lower-body strength, coordination and balance, helping you to prevent falls. To get started, you can order a DVD for beginners or attend a class at a local studio, such as Tai Chi Montclair. Seniors can also take classes at The William Margulies Senior Center in West Orange. YOGA A discipline that combines breath control, meditation and stretching, yoga is practiced by many people of all ages who want to improve overall health and flexibility and reduce stress. BEFORE YOU BEGIN • Be sure to clear any new exercise or workout plans with your doctor. • Choose activities you enjoy so you’re more likely to stick with them. • Start slowly. Increase the amount of time you spend doing an activity by five to 10 minutes at a time each session. • Find a buddy. Get a relative or friend to join you and try to commit to a regular schedule. ALWAYS STAY SAFE • Wear proper footwear that supports your feet and ankles and has soles that provide good traction. • Be sure to warm up before you undertake any prolonged period of physical exertion. • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water while doing your activities. • Don’t push it. If you’re running a fever, have a cold or upset stomach, or just don’t feel well, give yourself a break for the day. “Listen” to your body. • Exercise might tire you out a little bit, but it should never be painful. Stop at the first sign of pain.

“PRACTICING YOGA POSTURES CREATES PHYSICAL STABILITY AND MOBILITY FOR ALL LEVELS OF ABILITY AND THROUGHOUT ALL STAGES OF LIFE. BEING ON THE MAT ALLOWS YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO SLOW DOWN AND EXPERIENCE YOURSELF OUTSIDE OF YOUR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES.” —Christy Naida Linson, owner, Prana Yoga Center, Denville

1 WARM UP BEFORE YOU WORK OUT.

While some studies have questioned the benefit of stretching before exercise, warming up is a proven way to improve your workout. “Warming up gets some blood through the tissues—this makes the muscles looser and able to move properly, which decreases the risk of injury,” says Carol Michaels, owner of Carol Michaels Fitness in West Orange. “My favorite warmup is a walking lunge but if you have bad knees, peddling on a stationary bicycle is just as effective.”

recommended untested treatments. So if you have a serious question about your health, ask a real live doc.

Recent reports that zinc oxide nanoparticles—a common ingredient in some of the most potent sunscreens—might be toxic appear to have been debunked by an Australian study published in November. So guard your skin by slathering on that SPF without fear— and repeat often, per product directions.

8Sleep heavy.

For a better night’s sleep, try a weighted blanket. Designed to mimic the feeling of being swaddled, the blankets appear to ease anxiety, according to several recent studies. That could lead to longer, deeper sleep.

3Get a blood-pressure check.

Lowering high blood pressure can help you avoid cardiovascular diseases like stroke and heart attack—especially if you follow the American Heart Association’s new guidelines, which define healthy blood pressure as 130/80 and below, revised downward from the old standard of 140/90. If you have mild hypertension, cutting back on salt, becoming more active and/or losing weight may bring your BP in line with the new recommendations.

9Work out like a warrior.

A ninja warrior, that is. The highly successful reality show American Ninja Warrior is bringing its brand of over-the-top obstacle courses to gyms across the country. Centercourt Sports in Chatham, for example, has obstacle courses similar to those featured on the reality show for kids and adults of all fitness levels.

4Go low on gluten.

Cutting out all gluten—an umbrella term for the proteins found in wheat—is essential for those with celiac disease. Now researchers at the University of Copenhagen have found that the rest of us may benefit from cutting back—rather than cutting out—gluten, a move that can improve gut bacteria, banish bloating and even help us lose a few pounds.

5Tweak your fats and carbs. For a healthy diet, which should you cut: fat or carbs? Actually, you’ll do just fine if you continue to eat both, according to researchers at Harvard and Boston Children’s Hospital. The trick, they discovered, is replacing saturated and trans fats with unsaturated fats and ditching refined carbohydrates for whole grains and unstarchy vegetables.

6

Take un-selfies.

A recent study indicated that excessive selfie-posting could alienate online friends. Instead of focusing on yourself, point your camera outward at the world around you. You’ll find that documenting its wonders is also a way to appreciate them.

7Break up with Dr. Google.

Is there anything scarier than looking up your symptom online and being confronted with the worst-case scenario? A New York University study of online videos on prostate cancer, for instance, found that 77 percent contained misinformation and 19 percent

10 Donate love.

11 CLEAN YOUR

Giving in any form is good for us, but giving love is especially gratifying. Consider interacting with premature babies in a maternity ward, delivering food (and good cheer) to shut-ins and caring for shelter animals. To find out how your kind heart can do the most good, go to essexresourcenet.org and search “volunteer opportunities.”

SHOWERHEAD.

It’s the spot in your bathroom you’re most likely to overlook on cleaning day, but a recent study found that it can harbor microbes that have been implicated in lung infections. Wash it every other week with a household cleaner containing ammonia.

Invest in 12 organic fruits and veggies.

Proponents of an organic diet have long proposed that it can reduce the cancer risk posed by pesticides, and a new study from the Sorbonne in Paris supports that idea. Researchers found that eating more organics significantly lowered the risk of breast cancer and lymphomas. If you can’t go all-organic, aim to replace the foods highest in pesticides, like apples, grapes, strawberries and spinach.

SINUSES WITH EUCALYPTUS OIL. According to the website Medical News Today, products containing menthol don’t actually treat congestion. Eucalyptus oil, on the other hand, is a true decongestant. Pour a little on a tissue and keep it near your head at night, or mix it with hot water and inhale the vapor.

14Let the sunshine in.

Sunlight naturally lifts the spirit, and it can make your house healthier too. University of Oregon researchers found that bacteria were more likely to reproduce in dark rooms than in those flooded with UV light.

reason to stay in. According to Waitrose, the British food retailer, the taboo against dining out solo is rapidly disappearing. Just ask the folks at Amsterdam’s Eenmaal (“one meal”), an upscale restaurant devoted entirely to single diners.

Fuel happiness with flower 15Breathe through your nose. 21power. It could help boost your memory, according to a new Swedish study. If you’re chronically congested, see an allergist or ear, nose and throat specialist. And for nighttime congestion, try using nasal strips like Breathe Right, which help increase air flow through the nose.

16 Brush with bamboo.

Americans consign 25,000 tons worth of nonrecylable plastic toothbrushes to landfills annually. Bamboo brushes, on the other hand, are biodegradable and, unlike plastic brushes, antimicrobial as well, adding another layer of protection against the germs that can cause bad breath and gum disease.

17Knead your feet.

A foot massage is bliss not just for your aching feet but for your whole overburdened body. Most professional foot rubs come with a relatively low price tag—$60 an hour, for example, like at Soothing Zen Day Spa in Millburn (soothingzen.com).

18

Roll on brighter skin.

If you don’t have time for a daily facial, a jade facial roller might be the next best thing. Researchers at Tokyo Healthcare University recently revealed that massaging your face daily for 10 or more minutes with a facial roller improves the dilation of blood vessels long term, which can lead to brighter, healthier-looking skin.

19

Stash a tube of zinc oxide in the kitchen.

For those inevitable cooking nicks and burns, nothing beats zinc oxide for its healing properties. A number of clinical trials have shown that the white stuff famous for shielding noses can also protect the rest of your skin against infection and speed healing in the process.

yourself out 20Take for a meal.

Rutgers researcher Jeannette Haviland-Jones proved that just looking at flowers makes us happier. To immerse yourself in joy-boosting blooms, join a garden club (there are branches of the Garden Club of New Jersey in Caldwell, Essex Fells and Florham Park, for starters) or visit a public garden, like Greenwood Gardens in Short Hills.

out the board 22Break games.

There’s a reason old-fashioned board games are experiencing a major resurgence: Unlike video games, which are often played solo, analog classics like Clue and Monopoly require you to share the fun with others. And as you probably recall, they’re a blast to play.

23Store food safely.

Plastic storage containers can leach toxins into food when heated or if the food you’re saving is acidic. So store tomato sauce, pickles and other acid-rich foods in glass, metal or ceramic. To find the safest plastic, check the recycling number on the container and opt for 1, 2, 4 or 5.

24Try some vegan seafood.

No, it’s not an oxymoron. The folks at Whole Foods say we’ll see lots more sea vegetables on the shelves this year, in everything from kelp jerky to a tuna substitute made from algae. Ocean veggies are excellent low-calorie sources of fiber, antioxidants and a variety of vitamins and minerals.

25Forage a farmers market.

It’s the best way to find super-fresh, locally sourced produce, including items that may not have reached the shelves at your neighborhood supermarket—such as ground cherries, dandelion greens and wild mushrooms. There are great farmers markets in Bloomfield, Chester, Montclair and Millburn, to name a few.

If you’re hungry for something more elegant than Chinese takeout but can’t find a dinner companion, there’s no longer a

27 FOSTER A PET.

We may never feel more fully human than when we’re interacting with an animal. If you’re not ready to commit, fostering—caring for a dog or cat in your home until forever owners are found—offers similar benefits. “This mutually beneficial relationship not only gives a shelter animal a break from a stressful environment but can directly impact a human’s mood and health,” says Alex Favetta, Manager of Medical Services at Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter in East Hanover (njshelter.org).“Studies have shown that dogs lower blood pressure and cholesterol, while cats help reduce the chance of heart attack and heart disease.”

days.

More than half of us don’t, even though research has shown a correlation between vacations and well-being, not to mention improved heart health. A leading factor is “anxiety, which can include fear of losing income, falling behind, disappointing bosses or being judged as not adequately hard working,” says LCSW Leslie Tubul, who practices in Montclair and Caldwell. “Taking a vacation is the best way to be successful in your job, as it is known to promote creativity, reduce stress and improve relationships.”

29Dare to negotiate.

It’s surprising how many goods and services have negotiable prices, among them appliances, electronics, mattresses, furniture, tires, cable and satellite radio subscriptions, credit-card fees and services, such as landscaping and personal training. It never hurts to ask, “Is this your best price?”

30Get e-organized.

Try a to-do list app like Wunderlist or Todoist to boost organization and fight procrastination.

a gift, just 32Give because.

A surprise gift has a powerful impact for the recipient and the giver. In fact, research out of the University of British Columbia found that spending money on others served up greater satisfaction than spending it on oneself. Short on cash? Lending a hand with a necessary task delivers a similar sense of satisfaction.

34 PAINT A

STATEMENT WALL.

Nothing lifts your spirits like a change of color, and with a special wall of a different hue that makes a statement, you can create that change in an afternoon. Try Behr’s 2019 color of the year, Blueprint, a blue tempered with just enough gray to evoke a misty lakeside morning.

Need a compelling reason to work out? A 2018 University of Texas study found that women who exercised for at least 30 minutes a day experienced more satisfying lovemaking and a stronger libido. Researchers also determined that moderate exercise before sex boosted pleasure, possibly by increasing blood flow.

green, red and 36Eat yellow.

A Harvard study found that a diet high in leafy greens and red-andyellow fruits and vegetables protected against memory loss. So the next time you’re at the market, don’t forget to shop the rainbow.

in close 37Invest relationships.

Harvard psychologists studied the university’s Class of 1980 to determine who among them was happiest and why. They found that the most satisfied alums were those who carefully tended their closest relationships. Instead of taking your besties for granted, take the time to talk, lend a hand and give some love.

38Kick off your shoes. Before the advent of pavement and hardwood floors, human beings went barefoot, and it’s still the best way to avoid foot problems like bunions and hammertoes. It also promotes better balance—and keeps your floors cleaner!

39Eat mindfully.

An outgrowth of mindful meditation, mindful eating “takes into consideration that it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to register that it is full,” says Beth Candela, registered dietitian nutritionist at B3yond Nutrition in Caldwell. “Appreciate the nutritional value of your meal by chewing slowly and putting your fork down between bites.” Try the Mindful Eating Tracker app to learn more.

41Give (and get) more hugs. 47Get into a kayak.

In every one of the world’s cultures, hugs are a way to soothe emotional pain and bring people closer—which is why researchers at Carnegie-Mellon University weren’t surprised to find that hugs can help improve relationships when offered after an argument. (Weirdly, they also seem to ward off colds.)

new 42Reach heights.

Taking in a spectacular aerial view can help put everyday stresses in perspective. Visit the Eagle Rock Reservation in West Orange for a stunning look at the New York City skyline, or take in the scenery at Quarry Point within the Mills Reservation in Cedar Grove.

43Raise your voice in song.

Singing releases feel-good endorphins, which makes it a natural stressslayer. Sure, you can do it in the shower, but it’s even more fun with friends. Great area karaoke spots include The Pour House Pints & Pies in West Orange and The Famished Frog in Morristown.

your feet a vinegar 44Give bath.

Seriously—vinegar’s antimicrobial properties fight foot odor, athlete’s foot and toenail fungus. In a large basin, create a soak of one part vinegar to two parts water, then immerse your tired tootsies for 10 to 20 minutes.

40 ADOPT A PLANT.

House plants are more than just this year’s hip home accessory. Research has shown that exposure to green, growing things can make us happier. And plants also help filter indoor air. If you’re convinced you have a brown thumb, choose tough-to-kill plants like philodendron, snake plants and aloe.

40

45Question your doctor.

Doctor visits can be stressful and short (17.4 minutes on average, according to the National Institutes of Health), which is why we often forget to ask important questions. Make a list of concerns before you go, including basic questions like “Why are you prescribing that?” and “What does that mean?”

make more friends, 46Toquestion first impressions.

Your gut may tell you that the person you just met isn’t someone you’d care to know better, but according to a new University of Texas study, your gut could be way off. The study found that we tend to ascribe personality traits based on body type: Men with broad shoulders are extroverted; overweight people are careless; and so on. The takeaway: To make more friends, don’t jump to (possibly erroneous) conclusions.

Kayaking builds upper-body and core strength, offers a great cardiovascular workout and gets you up close and personal with nature (and your kayaking buddy). A few Essex and Morris County parks have kayaking on-site, including the Essex County Environmental Center and Splitrock Reservoir (essexcountyparks.org and morriscountyparks. net).

with 48Relax ASMR.

It stands for autonomous sensory meridian response— that wonderful tingle you get from a scalp massage or a gentle tickle up and down your inner arm—and research shows that it can induce relaxation and even help you fall asleep. Check out YouTube for ASMR videos (which often involve whispering, a major tingle inducer).

49Switch to dark roast.

Canadian researchers recently woke up to the fact that coffee can protect against Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. It’s not caffeine that perks up the protection but phenylindanes, produced during the roasting process. And the longer the beans are roasted, the higher they are in phenylindanes. Espresso never looked so smart.

50Kick a habit.

If you’re longing to stop (fill in the blank: biting your nails, bingeing on junk food, wasting time on social media, etc.), experts recommend tackling one habit at a time, substituting a good habit for the one you’d like to ditch, and giving yourself sufficient time—it takes at least three weeks to break a habit. For some tech cheerleading, try an app like HabitBull or HabitForge.

51Get CO-savvy.

You may already know you need a carbon monoxide detector. But are you aware of how many you ought to have and where they should be placed? At least one for every floor you spend time in, plus one for each bedroom, placed just outside bedrooms and near—but not on—the ceiling. For more CO safety tips, visit the National Fire Prevention Association’s website, nfpa.org.

52 PUMP (A LITTLE) IRON. Doctors have long touted the bonebuilding benefits of weight training, but a new study out of St. George’s University in Grenada indicates that it may pump up your heart as well. In fact, working out with weights for just an hour a week appears to reduce heart disease more effectively than such cardiovascular activities as running and swimming.

CHICAGO:

PIZZA

What bagels are to New York, pizza is to Chicago—the bready, spicy staple is available on every street corner, and tourists flock to get a taste. There are actually several “Chicago styles” of pizza, the most famous being deep-dish, and the Windy City has a restaurant for every preference. Giordano’s (with three locations downtown) and Lou Malnati’s (with more than 50 stores around Chicagoland) are go-tos for deep-dish, while Vito & Nick’s on South Pulaski Road is the place for thin-crust, and Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder on North Clark Street is your destination for the inimitable Pizza Pot Pie. Sausage is the town’s most popular pizza topping, but you surely can’t go wrong with good ol’ sauce and cheese.

SAN FRANCISCO:

PHILADELPHIA:

NEW ORLEANS:

NASHVILLE:

What makes San Francisco sushi so exceptional? Much of the fish is flown in straight from Tokyo and is hand-selected by chefs for their devout customers, who do not mess around when it comes to raw fish. Understandably, then, the options in the Golden Gate City for sushi, sashimi and tempura rival Japan’s. For two of the city’s notable sushi experiences, try Saru Sushi Bar, known for its hamachi with truffle oil, and Ju-Ni, which takes its name from the Japanese word for “12” because it seats just a dozen diners at a time. (And for sure you’re not in Kansas anymore—the website warns that “cancellations or changes in party size made within 48 hours of your reservation will incur an $155 per person charge.”) Residents say it’s also worth the short drive up north to Sushi Ran in Sausalito, a Bay Area favorite since the ’80s.

Few cities have foods named after them, so you gotta figure there’s something to this Philly cheesesteak business. The iconic sandwich, known for its slices of steak, melted cheese, fluffy Italian roll and optional accoutrements, has been a hallmark of the City of Brotherly Love since the 1930s when, as the story goes, a hot-dog vendor there named Pat Olivieri created a steak sandwich just for fun and a cab driver who stopped by gave it a rave. Today Philly’s top-rated joints include that humble food stand’s direct descendant, Pat’s King of Steaks in South Philly, along with Dalessandro’s in Roxborough, Sonny’s Famous Steaks on Market Street and Jim’s Steaks on South Street. Geno’s Steaks, Pat’s “rival,” is Bloomfield resident Ed Tullo’s favorite. “And you have to know how to order correctly,” he says. “A ‘Whiz with’ is the way to go.”

The varieties of gumbo offered in NOLA are as numerous as the establishments there that serve it, but all authentic Creole gumbo starts the same way: with a rouxbased stock, spices and flour. Cooks then add in seafood or meat, such as andouille sausage and what residents dub the “holy trinity” of veggies: onions, celery and bell peppers. The gumbos at Galatoire’s, Gumbo Shop and the upscale Arnaud’s, all in the heart of the French Quarter, will truly change any food lover’s life. (And for dessert, how about a delicious beignet?)

Barbecue is as polarizing a topic as politics down in Music City, and with delicious smoked brisket, pulled pork and fried chicken at every turn, we’d imagine it’s hard for locals to pinpoint their faves. Still, the Edley’s and Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint chains and the aptly titled Peg Leg Porker in the city’s Gulch neighborhood consistently pop up on curated lists of Nashville’s best barbecue. Why? In part because they play into West Tennessee’s tradition of whole-hog barbecue, where spectators can watch the boars crisp up before they dig in. Yeah, we’d say skip these destinations if you’re a vegetarian (or someone on a diet).

GUINNESS & BLACKBERRY BEEF STEW Yields: 4 servings INGREDIENTS

n 2¼ lb. beef chuck steak, diced n 2 Tbs. all-purpose flour n s unflower or olive oil, for cooking n 1 14.9 oz. can Guinness stout n 1 cup plus 1 Tbs. beef stock n 1 red onion, coarsely chopped n 3 parsnips, diced n 3 carrots, diced n 1 1 ⁄3 cups blackberries n 3 dried bay leaves n s ea salt flakes and coarsely ground black pepper to taste FOR THE RELISH: n 1 red onion, finely sliced n 1 1 ⁄3 cups blackberries, halved n ¼ cup plus 1 Tbs. red wine vinegar n 1 Tbs. superfine sugar

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 325°F. Put the steak into a bowl and add the flour and a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Toss together with your hands until the beef is evenly coated. In a Dutch oven, heat a generous glug of oil. Once the oil is hot (it will shimmer gently), add the beef and cook, turning once, until colored. You’ll need to do this in at least two batches; if you overcrowd the pan, the meat will braise rather than brown and you won’t achieve the desired color or depth of flavor. Once all of the meat has been browned, return it to the pan with the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil, then cover with the lid and cook in the oven for 2-3 hours, until the meat is tender and flaking. Meanwhile, make the relish. In a bowl, combine all the ingredients, then let sit at room temperature until needed. Serve the stew with some of the relish spooned over it.

CRAB & SRIRACHA MAC ‘N’ CHEESE Yields: 6 servings INGREDIENTS

FOR THE CROUTONS:

n 1 French baguette, torn into chunks n 1 Tbs. garlic oil (or olive oil, if you prefer) n 1 Tbs. caraway seeds n 5½ oz. Époisses cheese, chilled n 3½ oz. Comté cheese, shredded FOR THE SOUP:

n 1 Tbs. olive oil n 7 Tbs. unsalted butter n 18 oz. pink onions, finely sliced n 2 Tbs. all-purpose flour n ¾ cup dry white wine n 4¼ cups beef stock n Tbs. onion chutney or relish (optional, but recommended) n fine sea salt and coarsely ground black pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 400°F. MAKE THE CROUTONS:

Place the torn baguette onto a baking sheet and toss with the garlic oil and caraway seeds. Bake for 5-10 minutes, or until dry and crispy. MAKE THE SOUP:

In a large pot, heat the olive oil and butter over high heat. When the butter has melted, add the onions and cook until they are starting to color around the edges, 10 minutes or so. Once they are gently browned, reduce the heat to low and cook slowly for up to 40 minutes. The onions should caramelize deeply, and smell strong and sweet. When the onions are caramelized, add the flour and stir to coat the onions. Increase the heat to high, wait a minute for the pan to get hot, then pour in the wine and let bubble and evaporate almost entirely. Add the stock and bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 45 minutes, partially covered. Stir in the chutney or relish, if using, and salt and pepper to taste. Preheat the broiler. Divide the soup among serving bowls—make sure they’re heatproof—then scatter the croutons over the top. Slice the Époisses into fairly thin slices (do so quickly before it starts to melt) and lay them on top of the croutons. Scatter over the Comté and broil until the cheese has melted and burned a little at the edges.

MORRIS COUNTY’S

TOP

DENTISTS 2019 TO HELP YOU FIND GREAT DENTAL CARE, Morris/Essex Health & Life commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of hundreds of practicing and active dentists across Morris County. Dentists were asked to choose which of their peers they consider the very best, across seven different practice areas—endodontics, general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics. All the final honorees were fact-checked with the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System. The highest vote getters within each specialty who are in good standing with the state are included here in the third annual “Morris County’s Top Dentists” list. There are many other good dentists practicing in Morris County who may not be included on this list; we recommend that you consider “Morris County’s Top Dentists” and other resources before scheduling your next dental procedure.

AESTHETIC FAMILY DENTISTRY, P.A.

35 W. Main St., Denville, NJ 07834 • 937.627.3617 • aestheticfamilydentistry.com AESTHETIC FAMILY DENTISTRY OF DENVILLE, in business for over 40 years, offers a highly technological yet holistic approach to dentistry not often found in a family practice. All three dentists, Dr. Derek Fine, D.M.D., Dr. Jenni Kwiatkowski and Dr. Alan B. Steiner, focus on the overall well-being of each patient and specifically, how dental health affects the body. They look for homeopathic options wherever and whenever possible, preferring to utilize natural remedies in an effort to avoid the use of drugs and chemicals. For many procedures, they employ an Ozone Generator, which kills bacteria, viruses and fungus without the use of chemicals or other medication. Ozone is most often used during periodontal treatment, disinfecting teeth prior to fillings or crowns, desensitizing, and rinsing after surgery. Patients that have issues with taking traditional impressions can take advantage of a 3-D scanner, raising their comfort level and overall experience during such procedures. Additionally, a wide array of traditional and advanced dental treatments is available, as well as cosmetic dentistry, Botox and a variety of dermal fillers. Aesthetic Family Dentistry is especially proficient when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of

TopDentist_Morris_0219_FINAL.indd 58

temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) and sleep breathing disorders and headaches. TMJ may be treated with a combination of therapies, including massage therapy, TENS and the use of FDAapproved oral appliances. Patients very often find immediate success treating sleep apnea, migraines and symptoms associated with TMJ. All three dentists in the practice are dedicated to continuing education and have extensive expertise far beyond the required training and hours. A graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Dr. Fine is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and has advanced training in Neuromuscular Dentistry and Occlusion. Dr. Kwiatkowski, a graduate of NYU College of Dentistry, has additional training in cosmetic dentistry, implants and neuromuscular orthodontics. His office uses the most effective technology available, including Biolase and CEREC. Both allow for more dental work to be performed in a single visit which greatly reduces a patient’s stress. Biolase is laser dentistry performed for most patients without the use of needles. CEREC is an advanced technology that often achieves restoration within minutes. There are no messy impressions to take and patients don’t leave with a temporary fix. They leave with a new smile.

Dr. Castagna has cultivated an office with a professional atmosphere that is also fun, warm and family-like where the staff goes the extra mile to make a patient feel comfortable, “That kind of atmosphere is palpable and really sets us apart.” Dr. Castagna places a high priority on the aesthetics regardless of a patient’s age. “Every patient can get clear braces for no extra fee,” he says. “We offer Invisalign, and we do a lot of cases with inconspicuous lingual braces which few offices in this area offer.” Dr. Castagna also knows that no one likes impressions and his office’s new intraoral scanner eliminates that uncomfortable step. Dr. Castagna, who earned his credentials from Princeton, Columbia and Montefiore, remembers the moment when he chose to become an orthodontist, “Once I experienced how improving a child’s smile could exponentially improve their life, I was hooked.”

JOSEPH M. DALBON, D.M.D.

THE NEW JERSEY CENTER FOR LASER AND COSMETIC DENTISTRY 1019 Bloomfield Ave., Suite 1A & 1B, West Caldwell, NJ 07006 • 973.244.2424 • drdalbon.com DR. JOSEPH DALBON has brought an innovative and conservative treatment for gum recession to his West Caldwell dental practice. The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is largely performed on the West Coast where it was developed by Dr. John Chao. Dr. DalBon travelled to California to be personally trained by Dr. Chao. According to a study by the CDC, nearly half of all American adults suffer from gum recession. When gum recession occurs, the root structure of the tooth becomes exposed. This means that tooth decay and other problems can affect the teeth along the gumline and beneath it. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental wellness.

TopDentist_Essex_0219_FINAL.indd 67

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession. Traditionally, gum recession is treated with uncomfortable gum grafting which involves cutting away of donor tissue from the roof of the mouth and suturing that tissue over the areas of gum recession. Dr. DalBon’s patients have found that when compared to gum grafts, the Chao Pinhole® Technique is more comfortable, has faster recovery, has no cutting or sutures and has excellent, natural looking longlasting results. If you think you may be a candidate for the Chao Pinhole® Technique, please contact Dr. DalBon at 973-244-2424 to arrange a free consultation.

POWER FOOD

Darling

Clementines THESE TANGY CITRUS CHARMERS, RIPEST IN THE DEAD OF WINTER, ARE BURSTING WITH VITAMINS AND NUTRIENTS.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A RESPITE FROM

the winter doldrums, bright, cheery clementines are just the thing. Sweeter than navel oranges and less seedy than tangerines, clementines are a derivative of mandarins and are distinguished by their oval shape and glossy skins. These skins can be removed in one fell swoop to reveal small separated segments, making clementines an easy (and fun), pop-in-your-mouth snack. But it’s not just their undeniable convenience, sweet aroma or citrusy flavor that get us— these little guys happen to be nutritional powerhouses too. POWER UP “Christmas oranges,” nicknamed as such because they’re in season during the winter months and are traditional stocking stuffers, are packed with vitamin C, which supports the immune system and makes skin more youthful-looking, among other benefits. In fact, just one clementine boasts 36 milligrams of the stuff, which is 60 percent of the recommended daily value. Clementines

72

also contain 1.3 grams of fiber, which aids digestion, as well as 130 milligrams of potassium, which can help prevent headaches, hypertension, tooth decay and a plethora of other ailments. Need more convincing? Clementines are recommended in pregnancy, as the fruit’s high folate content supposedly helps prevent neural tube defects in fetuses (and encourages normal brain function in adults too). All of this packed into just 35 calories each! BUY/STORE/SERVE Clementines are sold from December to March or April. When purchasing yours, choose fruit that are firm, and only buy as many as you’ll need because they don’t last very long. Store them in a basket or bowl on the counter, not in a fridge or in a plastic bag, and just grab and go. Clementines, of course, can be eaten on their own as a healthy snack, or you can toss them in an Asian-style salad, atop yogurt or oatmeal, or mix them into a

smoothie or shake. But don’t throw out those peels just yet. Zest or candy the peels to add a citrusy kick to baked treats, or extract oil from the peel. Clementine oil is often used in aromatherapy, as it’s shown to be a powerful antioxidant and stress reliever that promotes clearheadedness and more restful sleep. DID YOU KNOW? Legend has it that the natural hybrid of clementines was discovered in West Algeria in the 1900s in the garden of the orphanage of Marie-Clément, for whom the fruit was formally named in 1902.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

THE FOX & FALCON

FLAVORS COME TO LIFE AT THIS NEW AMERICAN SOUTH ORANGE EATERY. aioli appetiser was so crisp and flavorful, I know I will have reoccurring cravings for this dish. In addition, my friend and I shared a three-cheese progression of Marcelli Pecorino served with abruzzese honey. The pecorino was delightful, and we had fun trying to distinguish the different flavors and textures in the wedges that were aged three months, six months and one year. For the main course, I had the grilled black bass filet with salsa verde and caramelized fennel. The salsa verde was well balanced and I could have eaten it by the spoonful. The fennel was tasty, however, the bass was a bit soggy and not my favorite part of the meal. As a side dish, I ordered the roasted Brussels sprouts with chili and lemon. While the vegetable dish had just the right amount of spice, I wished that I’d ordered the fried cauliflower with lemon and capers as well. My friend chose “The Burger” with aged cheddar and was so happy she did. The burger was perfectly cooked to her medium rare request and was full of flavor. The accompanying salt and pepper fries were cooked well done—almost burnt, which is my personal preference. Before we even paid the check, I decided what to order on my next visit. Just thinking about the pasta dishes, including a tubetti rigati with pancetta, onion and tomato and a linguine with mussels and jalapeño, made my mouth water. And maybe next time I will spring for that Wagyu beef tartare. —Daria Meoli The Fox & Falcon, 19 Valley St., South Orange, 973.419.6773, thefoxandfalconnj.com

DARIA MEOLI

It was a cold and stormy night and a friend and I were on the hunt for somewhere new. We headed to The Fox & Falcon, a sophisticated casual South Orange restaurant. The Fox & Falcon was opened in late November 2018 by David Massoni, local resident and co-founder of a bevy of hipsterapproved New York restaurants. Already a fan of one of Massoni’s former eateries, Talde in Jersey City, I was excited to try this elevated American restaurant closer to home in Essex County. Massoni’s intention with this venture was to blend the hospitality of an Irish pub with the culinary tradition of Italy, and executive chef Matt Ruzga, most recently a sous chef at Del Posto in New York City, executes this perfectly. The space is rambling and has very distinctive spaces to suit different occasions and moods—a cozy traditional Irish pub, an airy main dining room and a contemporary bar with large windows looking out onto the charming heart of downtown South Orange. As one would expect from a Massoni spot, the décor is warm and contemporary with wood floors, metallic accents, rich brown leather seating and, of course, Edison bulb chandeliers. The wine list has a nice array of options though not overwhelming. There is a fine selection of craft beers on tap and imaginative cocktail concoctions. Deciding what to order for dinner is no easy task. While I was incredibly temped to order the Wagyu beef tartare appetizer because of the irresistible novelty of eating Wagyu beef on a Tuesday night, I went with the less indulgent beet salad with hazelnuts, pecorino, mint and pomegranate vinaigrette. Every bite was fresh and seasonally satisfying. The fried fennel with dijon tarragon
