Spring has arrived, and we’re looking forward to both the warmer weather and to some big initiatives we’re working on here at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC). After an extensive renovation, the dedicated MRI at the Breast Center at the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center officially opened its doors on April 1. The Breast Center performs close to 60,000 screening and diagnostic procedures each year. It’s never too early to schedule your preventive screening appointments for yourself and the rest of your family. In this issue of Morris/Essex Health & Life, we highlight a few of our impressive medical and surgical departments. On page 26, you’ll meet Peter DeLuca, M.D., a sports medicine physician who comes to us from Philadelphia. He’s spent his career specializing in treating athletes including working with two professional sports teams. We are thrilled to have him bring his vast expertise to the RWJBarnabas Health community and to the CBMC orthopedics department. We also spoke to Mangala Nadkarni, M.D., the director of the Center for Sleep Disorders at CBMC. Turn to page 28 to learn about common sleep disorders and treatment options, as well as tips for better sleep as you age. Then, flip to page 24 to hear from two physicians from our pulmonary department, who use minimallyinvasive techniques to treat a variety of lung diseases. April is National Donate Life Month, which helps raise awareness for and emphasize the importance of organ donation. If you’re not registered already, here’s your friendly reminder to consider signing up to be a donor and potentially save a life. You can register at registerme.org/cbmc. And since this is our “Home Issue,” we hope this magazine also serves as a reminder that you have quality healthcare close to home here at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. Enjoy the great weather and what our area has to offer. With regards,

{ EDITOR’S NOTE }

Take the (Design) Plunge If you’re like many of us, perfection is on your “to-do” list. “If I can only get past these immediate distractions,” you think, “I’ll be able to turn my full attention to (fill in the blank) and really do it up right.” Such is our great ambition for that ideal tomorrow that keeps us from acting today. So it is, sometimes, with home renovation. But there are times when it makes sense to take the plunge. Yes, you have a design vision for your whole house, and eventually you’ll fulfill that vision. For now, though, you can take on a single room and make it a dazzler. In “A Timeless Playroom?” on page 34, you’ll see how a Maplewood homeowner/interior designer created a fun space that her three young boys could use now—and would ultimately stand the test of time. Mind you, I’m not taking a stand against perfection, certainly not here in Morris/Essex Health & Life’s Home Issue. We aim to inspire. And there are times, I’ll admit, when one’s ambition grows as a project takes shape. Consider the owner of a 1970s Morris Plains home, whose original goal for her master bathroom was to replicate a space found in a fancy boutique hotel. With an imaginative designer’s help, as you’ll read in “Florida, Meet Scandinavia” on page 30, she got much more: Once the bathroom was completed, the owner decided to have its elegant design flow into the master bedroom as well. But the fact is that, while “dream” may be the most overused word in home design, you can’t spend your whole life dreaming. You have to start sometime, somewhere. Your starting point can be something as humble as a floor covering. In “Do Rugs Right” on page 38, we present practical tips from four top interior designers on deploying rugs in ways that will both delight the eyes and stand up to years of foot traffic. Speaking of being practical, our Home Issue has other ideas to spruce up your space if a renovation isn’t quite in the cards. For example, this month’s Home Front (page 20) is a double-feature, showing off beautiful tufted furniture and planter pots that can bring any room to life. Today may be the day you spring into action to achieve the home you really deserve. And if the pages of this issue can give you ideas, we figure that fits our mission. Perfectly.

LAST CALL FOR POLL ON ‘THE BEST’

OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTIES.

There’s still time to vote for your favorite Morris and Essex businesses in our annual Best in Morris/Essex Readers’ Choice Poll. Ballots close April 15! Visit healthandlifemags. com/mehl-votereaderschoice2022/.

MAKE A SPLASH!

If you vowed to get on the water more this year, it’s time to get started. Paddling season has kicked off, with boating centers opening their doors. Here are three spots where Morris- and Essex-based paddlers can test the waters before summer officially begins: • The Waterfront at South Mountain Recreation Complex, Cherry Lane, West Orange. Make a whole day of your trip here; the paddle-boat launch for adults and children over age 2 is right near both Turtle Back Zoo and the Children’s Regatta Playground. Info: essexcountyparks.org • Lakeview Marina, 2 S. Beach Rd., Lake Hopatcong. Enjoy this lake by paddle; rent a standup paddleboard (SUP), a kayak or a tandem kayak (for two). Life jackets and paddles are included. Info: lakeviewmarina.com • Splitrock Reservoir, 420 Splitrock Rd., Rockaway. Here, 1,500 acres of wilderness await you, and about four miles of narrow waterways make for a great paddle. Info: rockawaytownship.org

SEDER SIPS

That old adage “eat, drink and be merry” applies on Passover too. The eight-day holiday (which this year begins at sundown April 15) celebrates the Jews’ freedom from bondage, and it’s customary to drink four cups of wine at each of the two seders. Luckily, the pandemic hasn’t affected kosher wine production as it has some other industries, so l’Chaim! Below, Gabe Geller, sommelier at the North Jersey-based Royal Wine Corp., the largest importer of kosher wines, shares Passover picks: • If you like red wine, try Psagot Jewel, $150: “It’s an impressive bottle of wine with notes of rich black fruit, cedar and vanilla,” Geller says. Buy it at Total Wine & More, 495 Prospect Ave., West Orange, 973.324.0899; totalwine.com • If you like white wine, try Rimapere Sauvignon Blanc, $18, with notes of floral and citrus. Buy it at kosherwine.com • If you like imported wine, try Carmel Special Reserve 40th Anniversary Edition 2016, $80, which Geller calls “a tribute to the legendary 1976 Carmel Special Reserve, Israel’s first modern, high-quality red wine.” Buy it at Wine Legend, 277 Eisenhower Pkwy., Livingston, 973.992.4441; winelegend.com • One more tip? Geller says you can never go wrong with Baron Herzog, a line of kosher wines from California that recently underwent a revamp. They’re reasonably priced at just $9 to $13 per bottle. Buy them at Sandy’s Wine & Spirits, 100 Rte. 46, Mount Olive, 973.691.0050; sandyswine.com

GOT TIME TO SAVE THE WORLD?

YOUR SALAD DAYS

The theme for 2022’s Earth Day on April 22, the 52nd annual observance, is “Invest in Our Planet.” It challenges you to do more than just avoid plastic cutlery and bring out your cans on recycling day. You can invest in Earth in a small way by helping out environmental nonprofits here in our two counties. For example: • Cora Hartshorn Arboretum, Short Hills (hartshornarboretum.org). Known for its bird sanctuary, educational nature center and more than 150 species of native wildflowers, this arboretum is always open to receiving help from the community. You can donate money, sponsor an animal or volunteer your time by helping with front-desk assistance, forest restoration and maintenance or education programs. • Bag and Film Recycling (bagandfilmrecycling.org). This national organization helps you find places to drop off plastic bags and plastic wrap so they can be recycled separately from other plastic and recovered to make other materials such as composite lumber. Most ShopRite and Whole Foods stores in our area participate, as do Target in East Hanover and Walmart in Cedar Knolls. • Choose to Reuse—NJ, Trenton (njclean.org). This statewide initiative urges New Jerseyans to bring their own reusable bags when shopping in place of single-use paper or plastic ones (which will be banned starting in May). Also, call Morris County’s Clean Communities coordinator, Liz Sweedy, at 973.285.8393, or Essex’s Janet Pena at 973.226.8500, ext. 2460, to find out when and where a litter cleanup is happening in your town and how you can pitch in. • Greater Newark Conservancy, Newark (citybloom.org). This facility fosters environmental know-how in urban communities through education and programming to promote the health and wellbeing of Newark residents. You can give back with a one-time or monthly donation, or volunteer as an individual or with a group at its Outdoor Learning Center or Urban Farm. • Great Swamp Watershed Foundation, Morristown (greatswamp.org). Science, education and advocacy help the mission of this nonprofit, which is to protect the health and maintain clean water in the Passaic River. There are plenty of ways to lend a hand, whether you donate, help maintain lands and trails or volunteer with blogging and social media.

With the right toppings and the perfect dressing, a salad can be a delicious meal, not just a side you choose when you skip the fries. But even if salads aren’t your goto, give them a go this May, National Salad Month. Try ordering one of these: • The Buffalo Jack Signature Salad at The Salad House (with locations in Millburn, Morristown, Montclair and Livingston) is one of this establishment’s most popular items, according to founder and CEO Joey Cioffi. It boasts breaded buffalo chicken, pepper jack cheese, tomato and croutons. Blue cheese dressing tops it off. • The Gianna Salad at Marra’s Uptown (460 Ridgedale Ave., East Hanover) is an assortment of Italian faves—tomatoes, fresh mozz, roasted red peppers and breaded eggplant tossed in a signature balsamic vinaigrette. • The Marion Salad at the Ritz Diner (72 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., Livingston), named after the owner, includes sesame chicken (or grilled, if you’d prefer), Portobello mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, cucumbers, carrots and sliced almonds all chopped up perfectly. We suggest the balsamic dressing to add a creamy kick. • The Santorini Salad at The Order (50 W. South Orange Ave., South Orange) is a twist on the traditional Greek salad, with a hard-boiled egg on top of cucumber, cherry tomatoes, feta and hummus. You can also add a side of chicken or lamb kebabs for extra protein. • The Spring Haven Salad at Green Chop’s (47 Watchung Plz., Montclair) features roasted turkey, cucumbers, oranges, apples and dried fruit drizzled with blue honey mustard dressing. (To be honest, we’re not totally sure why it’s blue.)

PUPPY LOVE

Dog: Dash, 14-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Owners: The Chiariello family of Morristown You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but this senior pup still has lots of pep left in him. Adopted from a woman who bred Cavaliers to provide pet therapy for kids with autism, Dash in his younger years was a certified therapy dog who served as a companion for the whole family—especially their oldest daughter, who requires significant support for autism. When Dash wasn’t “working,” he led the Chiariellos on hikes in the area, and he still enjoys outdoor jaunts—albeit slower ones—at Patriot’s Path, Jockey Hollow, Lewis Morris Park, Black River Park and Speedwell Lake. Named for the speedy son in The Incredibles films, Dash isn’t quite as quick these days, but still follows his owners’ commands (“Sit!”, “Stay!”, “Shake!”, “Circle!”) and has retained a stubborn streak. “If he doesn’t like what you’re saying he will

IT’S WEDDING SEASON

CINCO SPOTS FOR CINCO DE MAYO Still trying to reschedule your 2020 trip to Cancun? A hearty, Mexican-style celebration is the next best thing, and Cinco de Mayo (May 5) is coming right up. If you’d like to honor Mexico’s 1862 victory over France with margaritas, tacos, enchiladas, etc., here are some spots to visit: • Chico’s Mexican Grill, Denville, takes Tex-Mex up a notch and is always introducing new menu items and specials, such as the garlic shrimp appetizer or chicharron (pork belly) tacos. There’s a comprehensive bar menu too. 559 E. Main St., 973.957.0850; chicosmexicangrill.com • Don Jose, East Hanover, which has festive décor and a super-authentic menu that includes taquitos, tamales and chimichangas. BYOB. 200 Rte. 10, 973.781.0155; donjosemexican.com • El Matador, Bloomfield, has tostadas, sopes, huaraches and muchos more authentic Tex-Mex dishes, as well as décor that will transport you to Puerto Vallarta. BYOB. 418 Broad St., 973.748.1707; moreelmatador mexicanrestaurantbloomfield.com • Forklore Artisanal Taco, West Orange, a family-owned establishment where every day feels like Cinco de Mayo thanks to the vast taco menu, over-the-top decorations, live music and more. BYOB. 5913 Harrison Ave., 973.324,2208; folkloretaco.com • Leyendes de Mexico, Boonton and Parsippany, sets the mood with extensive art and decor depicting Mexican history. Expect large portions of Mexican faves such as mole, posole and churros. BYOB. 905 Main St., Boonton, 973.794,6441; 71 New Rd., Parsippany, 973.287.7060; leyendasrestaurant.com

If you’ve got a pile of RSVPs you’ve yet to address for weddings coming up this spring and summer—or you’re planning your own big day or a loved one’s—you’ve got company. Weddings postponed in 2020 and even 2021 are making up for lost time. Because of this, many couples are booking weekday affairs rather than the usual Saturday or Sunday—they’re no longer considered undesirable. “In some circumstances, weekday weddings were the only available days due to all the COVID postponements,” says Stacey Sainato, owner and lead designer at Peony Events in Morristown. “A weekday wedding will sometimes benefit the couple because the venue or vendors may add in some extra services.” Also, a new study conducted by Holidu, the search engine for holiday rentals, reveals that ours is the most-searched state when it comes to wedding venues. “New Jersey has amazing venues, many of which have overnight accommodations or hotels nearby that offer complimentary shuttle service, making the experience convenient and enjoyable for guests,” Sainato adds. Our expert’s advice? Book your venue shortly after you get engaged to avoid unnecessary stress and competition. “Now that things have opened up again, the best vendors and venues are booking up fast,” Sainato advises. “Book quickly and send out your save-the-dates as soon as you solidify your venue.”

YOUR PLAN FOR POTHOLES

The snow and ice have melted, but some effects of winter weather remain. We’re talking about potholes, the unfortunate by-product of all the road treatments used to make winter driving possible. Some potholes are a mere bother; others can almost take our breath away—and cause plenty of damage to our cars. Luckily, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) began a statewide pothole repair campaign in February to fix some of our roads’ biggest pits and cracks. You can also go to 511nj.org to see in real time where crews are repairing potholes in your area. Meanwhile, here are tips from the American Automobile Association (AAA) of North Jersey: • Check your tires: Be certain your tires are inflated properly. Worn or underinflated tires create a higher risk of wheel or suspension damage if you hit a pothole. • Inspect the suspension: Your car’s struts, shocks and other suspension parts should be in good working order. When they are, you’ll feel less of an impact. • Look ahead: Focus on the road and look for potholes. Be sure your surroundings are clear when you steer around them. • Slow down: Reduce your speed if you can’t avoid a pothole. Hitting one at a high speed increases the chances of tire and wheel damage. • Beware of puddles: Standing water could be hiding a deep pothole. Avoid making a big splash. Essex and Morris counties and their public works departments will be working throughout the spring on pothole repair and other roadway improvements. But if you see something, say something; you can report a pothole to 973.239.3366, ext. 2220 (Essex) or 973.285.6763 (Morris).

{ YOUR FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS }

Change is Brewing What’s it like to be a woman today in the mostly male craft beer industry? Sometimes all it takes is a good, cold beer to bring old friends back together. In the case of Cindy DeRama, Tim Besecker and Scott McLuskey, that beer was homemade. The trio went to high school together and reconnected after college, gravitating together over their shared love of home brewing (and love more generally for two of them, as DeRama went on to marry Besecker). Opening their own brewery was a pipe dream, but when DeRama—an engineer by trade—was ready to make a career change, she pushed to make the dream a reality. Twin Elephant Brewing Company, a name similar to a NYC-based film company owned by Besecker’s brother, opened in Chatham in 2016. It prides itself on offering high-quality brews made with locally sourced ingredients. DeRama, 40, says it’s not always easy being a woman in what’s still a very male-dominated profession, but she’s proud to be one of a growing number of females in the industry. Recently we got a chance to ask her about it.

MSX.0422.friends.indd 16

When and how did you become interested in brewing craft beer? I had a roommate after college who got into home brewing, and we made a deal: He could home-brew and have equipment scattered all around the kitchen if he kept the kitchen clean and cooked. The free beer didn’t hurt either. But I began to become interested and learn from him about the different types of beer and how to brew. The Brewers Association says that, as of 2019, only 7.5 percent of head brewers in the U.S. were women. There are more women getting involved, but yes, brewers are usually white, cisgender males, and being a woman and/or a minority is more of a challenge. I’m lucky to be in New Jersey, a progressive state. Still, some customers assume I don’t know anything because I’m a woman. They’ll look at me and say, “I want to talk to the brewer.” There are issues in every industry for women, but because brewing is so male-dominated, it’s magnified. There are issues with sexual harassment, discrimination, sexism, being overlooked. It’s not necessarily malicious all the time, but it’s an ingrained thing in our society. Women always have to fight a little harder to get equal treatment. Are there signs of positive change? Yes. In the past couple of years there have been more and more women speaking up and supporting each other. There are also empowering groups—like the Pink Boots Society and Women of the Bevolution—where people can connect and bring light to different issues. How are the dynamics between you and your partners, especially since one is your husband? From the beginning, Tim and I drew the line with business being business and personal being personal and confirmed our core values and mission for the brewery. Being a woman does make it more difficult in this industry in general and even with my partners. Nothing they do is malicious, but sometimes I do need to

16

call out actions like “mansplaining” or even jumping in to carry something they think I can’t handle. The key to our relationships is communication, boundaries and understanding. What advice do you have for a female who wants to get into the industry? Know your stuff—not that you have to prove anything to anyone, but be yourself, and don’t doubt your knowledge. If you’re there, you’re there for a reason. Don’t placate the men—don’t just try to be their buddy so as not to ruffle feathers. If they’re not respecting you, they’re not respecting you, and that’s not OK. Be proud of what you’re doing and know your worth. Tell us about Twin Elephant’s selection of beers. We have a variety of fresh beers for everybody. We get people in all the time who say, “Oh, I’m not really a beer drinker; I’m just here with friends.” We take the time to talk with a customer and understand what his or her palate is. And we try to educate people. We have a beer for everybody, from the light beer drinker to somebody who doesn’t even typically drink beer. Do you have any tips for those interested in home brewing? Do your research. It’s a hobby, and anyone who gets into a hobby should do the research. There are also a lot of home-brew clubs, and that’s one of the best resources for knowledge, because people have a lot of different techniques they try. What changes have you seen in the craft beer brewing industry? It’s booming nationally, for sure. Laws have changed to make it easier to open a brewery, and there are fewer barriers. There’s also more acceptance of experimenting with ingredients, rather than sticking to traditional recipes. It’s a more creative space, and that draws nontraditional beer drinkers into trying different things. You have people putting candy and cereal in beers, pork roll—it’s fun! —Sarah Nolan

MEET THE DOC

Get to know Peter DeLuca, M.D., an accomplished sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon who joins RWJBarnabas Health from Philadelphia. RWJ Barnabas Health Medical Group and Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) continually attract accomplished physicians from around the country that are at the top of their fields, and Peter DeLuca, M.D., is the latest provider to join the team. Dr. DeLuca, a fellowshiptrained sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon, has dedicated his career to treating athletes of all ages, including elite athletes in professional sports, and specializes in minimally-invasive surgery and treatment of the shoulder and knee. Here, Dr. DeLuca shares more about his background, why he wanted to return to his New Jersey roots and why he’s thrilled to join the Combined Medical Group of RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Health and the orthopedics team at CBMC.

thousands of times, but this one time it was just wrong because there was excessive stress on the ACL. Rotator cuff tears are moreso caused by wear and tear of the joint. But I’ve always stressed with my patients that even just 15 minutes of warm-up exercises a few times a week before practice would lower the instances of ACL tears. These exercises work on strength and something we call neuromuscular control. What is one of the first things you hope to do at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center? At CBMC, I’d like to focus my practice on younger patients, and go out and tell high school coaches and trainers about these exercises [that can potentially prevent injuries]. Most of the time, athletes are coming to me too late—they already tore their ACL or rotator cuff.

What are some common conditions that you treat in young and professional athletes? As a sports medicine physician, I’m trained in problems with the knee and shoulder, and my practice exclusively treats those abnormalities. Surgically, I perform advanced arthroscopic procedures such as ACL reconstructions (the tissue that connects the thighbone to the shinbone at the knee), shoulder labral repair, cartilage replacements, meniscus repairs and rotator cuff repairs.

How do you hope to work with other specialists within the RWJBarnabas Health system? In my field, it’s not just the sports doctors [who help these patients]— we have to work closely with therapists, athletic trainers, sports nutritionists and sports psychologists, and I’m excited to work with this multi-disciplinary team. We also have non-operative sports medicine physicians who play an integral part in treating athletes. We’re going to work more closely with them, as they can offer PRP (platelet-rich plasma injections), stem cell injections and the like.

What do you hope to bring to your patients at CBMC? Very few physicians have taken care of two pro teams (I was the team physician for the Philadelphia Flyers and the Philadelphia Eagles), so I’m happy to bring everything I’ve learned from that experience to the CBMC community. The biggest contribution is my general experience in sports medicine. I’ve devoted my career to treating athletes of all ages from youth sports, high school, college and at the professional level.

Why did you want to make the move from Philadelphia to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and New Jersey in general? I grew up in Jersey City, so I’m familiar with northern New Jersey and I worked here before I went down to Philadelphia. I wanted to be closer to home too—my parents Peter DeLuca, M.D. are getting older. But it’s a great opportunity to come to You’re trained in arthroscopic surgery. Sleep is an integral part of life, but our slumber needs change as we age. Two clean, spacious styles were blended so triumphantly in a Morris Plains bathroom that the client couldn’t help asking for more.

FLORIDA, MEET SCANDINAVIA

To capture the rich, spa-like vibe her client sought, designer Tammy Bolden used porcelain tiles made to look like marble throughout the master bathroom. Chrome accents found in the mirror and vanity add “sparkle” but don’t interfere with the desired “crisp, clean” look.

Tasked with updating her client’s bedroom while using the existing furniture, Bolden drew inspiration from a unique, modern light fixture she knew the homeowner would love. Its gold elements worked well with her client’s dark-wood pieces, and Bolden’s use of silver and white in the wallpaper accent, curtains and bedding tied in with the bathroom.

Angela Moore wanted a boutique, hotel-style bathroom with a spa-like energy in her Morris Plains master suite. The original 1979 design, with its tiny pedestal sink and claustrophobic shower to match the room’s minuscule footprint, wasn’t doing it. But a large unused vanity area just outside the space offered hope for expansion. Moore entrusted Tammy Bolden, owner of Bold Interior Designs in Montclair, with her vision to redesign the outdated bathroom, and she quickly honed in on the vibe her client was after, combining the homeowner’s Florida roots with her love of Scandinavian design. “I wanted minimalist/modern inspired by Scandinavia—clean, crisp, white, bright light and not a lot of clutter,” Moore says. “I’m also a native Floridian and wanted to bring that open, airy feel into my home.” Once a contractor gutted the space and took down the wall between the bathroom and the vanity area, Bolden—who describes herself as “visual to a fault”—captured the rich look Moore coveted by using porcelain tiles made to resemble marble throughout the bathroom. “I wanted that elegant feel, like you’re encapsulated in marble,” Bolden says.

Moore had at first hoped for an all-white design, but in the end trusted Bolden’s view that could make the space feel “sterile.” She is pleased with the interest the designer’s suggested gray veining provides. “Sometimes clients get gun-shy—they hired a designer to help them out of their comfort zone, but they don’t want the designer to push them,” Bolden reflects. “But Angela trusted the process and trusted me and realized I was not going to do anything that wouldn’t be in her best interests.” A double-sink vanity with chrome accents “provides some sparkle but sticks with the sleek vibe” Moore wanted, Bolden notes. If it looks almost floating, it’s because it was supposed to be. The piece came with a resin top that the pair decided to replace with quartz to give it a more high-end impression that would also match the tile. But the quartz ended up being far heavier than the resin and thus needed front legs installed to hold its weight. “It looks intentional, so it worked out,” Bolden says. The space is finished with a chrome mirror set between polished nickel light fixtures, both by Regina Andrew Detroit, that Bolden fell in love

with at High Point Market (a home furnishings industry trade show) and hoped she’d be able to use. “I’m totally and completely in love with my space,” Moore says. “I feel a serenity, peace and calm there.” She especially likes the steam shower she requested and had installed. The only problem? She now wanted an updated bedroom to match her “fantastic” master bath—but had a limited budget. Working with Moore’s existing furniture, Bolden brought her vision for the bedroom to life after discovering a Hudson Valley Lighting fixture she knew her client would love. “It’s unique and modern, and Angela had to have it as soon as she saw it,” Bolden says. Plus, its gold elements went well with the warm undertones found in Moore’s dark-wood furniture. Gold side tables were added to tie in with the fixture, but Bolden used silver and white in the bedding, curtains and Thibaut wallpaper accent to coordinate with the bathroom. “She worked with what I had and integrated new ideas into the bedroom using my existing furniture and still created a really nice space,” Moore says.

Most spaces designed to be kid-friendly will be obsolete in a few years, but not the one in a certain Maplewood house.

A TIMELESS PLAYROOM?

Whimsical but not juvenile, bold but not overwhelming, this playroom/ gentleman’s lounge reflects the choices designer Sarah Storms made to achieve the right balance for timeless beauty. The sculptural vases and decorative boxes atop the jewel-toned built-in are by Jonathan Adler. Tarrytown Green updates the home’s original crown moldings.

A playroom is for kids, and its aesthetic is time-limited by fleeting childhood—that has always seemed to be a firm rule. But for Sarah Storms, the interior designer at Maplewood’s eponymous Styled By Storms, some rules were made to be broken. She set about creating a fun space in her hundred-year-old Maplewood Dutch colonial that her three boys, ages 8 and 5-year-old twins, could put to the test— and still visit happily as a “gentlemen’s lounge” decades hence. It would be outgrow-proof. When Sarah and her husband Chris bought the house in November 2019, so many other rooms took priority that “the boys’ room was utilitarian,” she says. It didn’t do justice to its space right off the foyer, so Storms would shut the door when entertaining. But in her designer’s heart, as she recalls, “we wanted it to feel like a space we were proud of.” Two years later, her motivation to tackle the reno came from the One Room Challenge, a biannual home makeover event launched by Florida design blogger Linda Weinstein. Storms’ goal was to create a playroom/ gentleman’s lounge for all ages—so no juvenile prints. “It’s a beautiful, MSXHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

MSX.0422.home-sarah storms.indd 37

timeless, eclectic design that will grow with us,” she says. Once toys are tucked away in the custom built-ins with Benjamin Moore’s Tarrytown Green, the room takes on a lounge quality with its classic burgundy Ikea table atop a ’50s Persian rug bursting with color over hardwood. For a masculine touch, she sourced Schumacher’s Giove snakes for the wallpaper and lumbar pillows on her great-grandmother’s petite club chairs reclad in a Vanderbilt velvet. For the walls, one of her twin sons chose a “whimsical” tiger print original from Maplewood’s Sarah Klein. Because kids will be kids, Storms made it a snap to turn the room into one big space with the table’s brass casters and stackable (also wipeable) acrylic chairs. Also no-fuss, brass cabinet pulls wrapped in cognac leather will grow rugged with time, as the unlacquered brass drawer pulls gain patina charm. Did Storms hit the mark with this once blank box of a room? It certainly has the kid seal of approval. “They want to have everyone they know over for playdates,” says Storms of her sons. As for the room? She calls it “the embodiment of me as a designer.”

DO RUGS RIGHT You can give bare floors a quick and stylish makeover with these magic-carpet tips from four local pros. By Haley Longman Finding a fabulous area rug to ground your space shouldn’t be a game of Goldilocks: “Too big?” “Too soft?” “Too bright?” Or “just right?” A rug will smartly complement the rest of your décor, as well as add texture and warmth to your space—if it’s chosen and used wisely. So we asked four local designers to share revelations on how to find the perfect size, material and style of rug for every room in the home, plus tips on maintaining and cleaning them.

SIZE A too-small rug visually shrinks the space, so when in doubt, go oversized rather than undersized, says Chusid, and opt for one large area rug rather than several small ones to maximize the room. Liloia’s rules of thumb? “For a bedroom, I like three-fourths of an inch of the area rug to be under the bed and in front,” she says—your feet should touch the rug when you get out of bed. “For a dining room, the dining table and all chairs surrounding the table should be on the area rug with ample space behind the chairs when they’re pulled out.” A living-room area rug should fit most if not all of your furniture on it too. But, as a general rule, “leave somewhere between 6 and 12 inches between the end of the rug and the walls,” says Snyder. MSXHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

STYLE The pattern or overall look of your rug will depend on your taste, of course, and the one you choose should complement the furnishings and the rest of the décor in that room. “Try to pair the rugs to the most prominent items in the space; the furniture and the artwork,” Snyder recommends. “The rug should coordinate with surrounding items so that the space feels cohesive and not disjointed.” This means the rug should have a colorway and an aesthetic similar to those of the rest of the room, adds Liloia. Alternatively, a rug you love can serve as the initial inspiration for the rest of that room’s overall design. “If you have a rug that makes a statement,” says Chusid, “design the rest of the space around it, keeping the furnishings a bit simpler without sacrificing style.”

MATERIAL Our designers agree that the best material for your rug depends on the room in which it’s placed. For first-floor, high-traffic areas such as a mud room or an entryway, “workhorse” rugs such as sisal rugs or those made with a combination of materials like wool and polypropylene work best, says Ralff. This means avoiding rugs made of synthetic fibers, which aren’t as high-quality and won’t last as long as their more luxurious wool-fibered counterparts. If you’re going to put a rug in the kitchen, consider a washable rug that you can throw right into the washing machine, Ralff adds, or an indoor-outdoor runner, which is easy to clean. Kids’-room rugs need not be super-luxurious; instead, they should focus on “durability and softness,” says Snyder; she recommends those made from nylon or polypropylene.

{ FLOOR PLAN } MAINTENANCE There’s no point in purchasing fabulous rugs if they’re not properly taken care of. Shake and air them out regularly, spot-clean as needed according to the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions—blot into the stain and don’t rub, Chusid warns—and consider hiring a professional rug service to deep-clean each rug yearly. A good rug pad is imperative too, to protect both the rug and the floor on which it’s placed. “Choose a rug pad of both felt and natural rubber to protect the hardware floors and give more cushion,” says Liloia. Says Ralff: “Don’t cheap out on a rug pad!”

FOR RUG-GED INDIVIDUALISTS Our rug mavens offer these further tips depending on who you are, what you like and what you’ve got already: • If you have an open floor plan…your rugs should coordinate but not be matchy-matchy. Instead, opt for different patterns in the same color palette. “This mixes things up while maintaining an interesting flow from room to room,” says designer Susie Chusid of Roseland. • If you like the layered look…don’t be afraid to layer rugs, because it’s a seamless way to add texture to your space. “For example, an odd-sized antique rug can work if it’s layered over a natural sisal or wool sisal rug,” says Alexa MSXHEALTHANDLIFE.COM

MSX.0422.rugs _MF.indd 42

Ralff of Maplewood. • If you want a runner on your stairs….opt for a wool or nylon runner that will stand up to foot traffic, suggests Glen Ridge’s Grace Liloia. “It should be a low-cut pile for stability.” • If you don’t know where to start…let your imagination run wild. No, really. “It’s incredibly important to give yourself freedom for creativity,” says Verona-based Jessica Snyder. “Don’t be afraid to blend two or three styles [in your space] to showcase your life and your travels.” After all, interior design should be fun!

MORRIS

COUNTY’S

TOP REAL ESTATE AGENTS

2022 MORRIS COUNTY IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST SEASONED AND TALENTED REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS IN THE COUNTRY. To help readers find the best agents to work with, Morris/Essex Health & Life contracted DataJoe Research of Boulder, Colorado to facilitate a multi-faceted research campaign. It consisted of an online survey delivered directly to agents across Morris County via email as well as internet research. In the survey, real estate agents were asked to provide sales volume ranges and also nominate their peers. In the internet campaign, DataJoe consulted a variety of websites to build richer knowledge of individual licensed real estate agents across the county. DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at the time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If they were not able to find evidence of a real estate agent’s current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that real estate agent was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied results to Morris/Essex Health & Life for final review. We recognize that there are many good real estate agents who are not shown on the representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the county.

Christine has stayed with one office throughout her career. She attributes that decision to the great Coccia Real Estate environment between the other realtors, staff and Christopher Coccia, the broker of the office. “I love what I do, whether it’s a first time buyer finding a new home, or a seller who needs more space or is downsizing to a smaller home. ESSEX

COUNTY’S

TOP REAL ESTATE AGENTS

2022 TO HELP READERS FIND THE BEST REAL ESTATE AGENTS TO WORK WITH IN ESSEX COUNTY, Morris/ Essex Health & Life contracted DataJoe Research of Boulder, Colorado to facilitate a multi-faceted research campaign. It consisted of an online survey delivered directly to agents across Essex County via email as well as internet research.

GREEN SOUP WITH HARD-BOILED EGGS Yields 8 servings

INGREDIENTS:

n▢ 2 Tbs. olive oil n▢ 5 medium yellow potatoes, cubed n▢ 3-5 carrots, scrubbed and sliced n▢ 3-5 stalks carrot tops (optional), cleaned n▢ 2 parsnips (optional), sliced n▢ 2 celery stalks, cut in half n▢ ¼ cup celeriac root (optional), peeled and cubed n▢ 3-5 whole parsley, stems and leaves n▢ 8 cups water n▢ 2 Tbs. salt n▢ 1 tsp. pepper n▢ 1 bunch or clamshell spinach, chopped n▢ 3 scallions, sliced into thin circles n▢ 3 eggs, hard-boiled and diced n▢ ½ lemon, juiced n▢ ¼ cup dill, chopped n▢ sour cream, for serving

DIRECTIONS:

In a large pot or a 4.5-quart Dutch oven, over medium heat, heat olive oil, enough to coat the bottom of the pot. Add potatoes, carrots and parsnips, stir periodically. Cook for about 7 minutes or until vegetables look slightly softened. Season with ½ tablespoon of salt. Add celeriac root, celery, carrot tops, parsley and 8 cups of water. Allow the liquid to come to a gentle simmer. Season with 1 tablespoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of pepper. Close the lid partially. Lower the heat to low. Cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 30 minutes. Remove and discard parsley, carrot tops and celery. In the meantime, make hard-boiled eggs. Add eggs to a small pot, cover eggs with cool water and place on the stovetop over medium/high heat. Cover the pot and let the water come to a rolling boil. Once the water reaches this point, cook eggs for about 6 minutes. Turn off the heat and drain the water. Run the pot under cold water to stop the cooking process. Once the eggs have cooled down, dry and peel the shells. Add spinach and scallions and the remaining ½ tablespoon of salt. Squeeze juice from half a large lemon. Continue cooking for about 3 minutes. Turn off the heat and add sliced or diced eggs. When serving, ladle soup into a bowl, add a spoonful of sour cream and a sprinkle of fresh dill.

LEMON ROASTED ASPARAGUS Yields 8 servings

INGREDIENTS

n▢ 2 lemons n▢ 1 tsp. kosher salt n▢ 3 lbs. asparagus, trimmed n▢ olive oil, for drizzling n▢ 1 cup fresh parsley, chopped

DIRECTIONS:

Grate the zest of the lemons. Spread out the zest on a plate and let it air-dry slightly, about 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 450˚F. Mix the lemon zest with the salt in a small bowl and set aside. Cut the lemons in half and set aside. Divide the asparagus between two baking sheets, drizzle with olive oil and toss to coat. Roast until the asparagus is tender and starting to color, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer the asparagus to a platter. Before serving, squeeze the lemons over the asparagus, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with the lemon salt and parsley.

Asparagus is a great addition to any meal—it’s low in calories and packed full of nutrients, such as fiber, folate, potassium and vitamin K. This recipe is anti-inflammatory by including garlic, asparagus and parsley.”

ROAST RACK OF LAMB WITH LEMON AND GARLIC Yields 4 servings

INGREDIENTS:

n▢ 3 Tbs. olive oil n▢ 2 tsp. coarse sea salt n▢ freshly cracked black pepper n▢ zest and juice of 1 lemon n▢ 2–3 garlic cloves, finely minced n▢ 2 small lamb racks (approximately 12 oz. each) n▢ 1–2 Tbs. olive oil (extra)

DIRECTIONS:

In a small bowl, mix together the oil, salt, pepper, lemon and garlic. Place the racks of lamb into a large Ziploc freezer bag. Pour the marinade into the bag, seal the bag and make sure the racks of lamb are well coated in the marinade. Leave to marinate for at least 30 minutes, but overnight in the fridge is best. If your kitchen is cool, leave the bag on the kitchen counter to marinate. Otherwise, place it in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 390°F. Let the meat come to room temperature before cooking. Heat the extra oil in a large oven-proof saucepan which will fit both racks of lamb comfortably. On a medium-high heat, sear the racks of lamb on each side until they are nicely browned. Once both sides of the racks of lamb have been seared, quickly position them on the saucepan so the bones are standing upwards. Place the saucepan into the oven and roast for 15-20 minutes, depending on how well-cooked you like your meat. You can test for doneness by prodding the meat gently, but a more accurate way of testing is to use a meat thermometer. Allow the lamb to rest for about 10 minutes before carving.

{ POWER FOOD }

Salad’s Secret Weapon

Arugula, a peppery-tasting, leafy green, can enliven a lazy lettuce—and maybe you too! Those ancient Romans weren’t fools, and neither, centuries later, was Charlemagne. The tart-but-tender, leafy, cruciferous vegetable known to science as Eruca vesicaria (and to us as arugula) was on the menu in the Eternal City— and for a reason. The poet Virgil wrote that it “revives drowsy Venus,” and by Venus he meant the libido. Legend says the plant was therefore shunned by propriety-minded monastery gardens, but the King of the Franks came to its rescue in 802 A.D. by decreeing it an officially OK herb. Arugula isn’t lettuce; it’s actually a member of the mustard family, kin to kale, broccoli and cabbage. Plants are native to warm climates such as those of the Mediterranean, Turkey and western Asia; they grow from 8 to 40 inches tall. The world’s two top growers today are China and the U.S. Still, we Yanks were slow to climb aboard the arugula bus. Reportedly the name of this leafy treat didn’t show up in American English until 1960, when it appeared in a Craig Claiborne New York Times column. But by 2006, when writer David Kamp published a book about “how we became a gourmet nation,” saluting everything from heirloom tomatoes to artisanal cheeses, he knew just what title would capture the national foodie mood: The United States of Arugula. POWER UP: Whether or not it’s a true boost in the bedroom—we still don’t know that answer for

sure—arugula has arrived, and with it a host of health benefits. Research suggests that its high levels of nitrates and polyphenols can reduce both blood pressure and the amount of oxygen the body burns during exercise. Arugula contains bone-building calcium and musclebuilding potassium. According to the FDA’s recommended daily values, a cup of arugula can furnish 27.7 percent of the body’s daily need for vitamin K, 9.5 percent of its vitamin A and 2.5 percent of its vitamin C. (One caution: If you’re taking a blood-thinning medication, don’t load up suddenly on arugula, as K promotes clotting and could negate the meds’ effectiveness.) Diets rich in cruciferous veggies such as arugula have been linked to a lowered risk of cardiovascular disease and of type 2 diabetes, and a 2017 meta-analysis associated them with lower cancer risk too. (One mechanism? Apparently the body breaks down the glucosinolates in these foods into several compounds including sulforaphane, which blocks an enzyme in the progression of cancer cells.) Another study, in the journal PLOS in 2014, confirmed that erucin, found in arugula, inhibits the proliferation of a type of breast-cancer cells. As a food that offers an intriguing, peppery taste at a measly 5 to 6 calories per cup, arugula can be a healthy alternative to whatever else you’re tempted to munch. What’s not to like?

BUY/STORE/SERVE: In the wised-up foodieland America has become, you should have no trouble finding arugula at your local grocery store, vegetable stand or farmers’ market. The bagged product may be there yearround, while bunches and loose-leaf arugula are most plentiful in early spring or fall. Look for bright green leaves, giving yellow, wilted or mushy ones a pass-by. A bit of dirt, however, needn’t be a deal breaker—you’ll be washing off the leaves when you get them home. You can refrigerate leaves (wrapped in a slightly damp paper towel) in an airtight container for about 10 days. Plucked when young, the plant is straight-on green; more mature arugula is darker and more pungent. Arugula (especially baby arugula) is great when eaten raw, perhaps in a salad in combination with milder greens, to which it adds pizzazz. It’s also a happy companion to citrus fruits or flavorful cheeses. Arugula may be worked into a casserole, a pasta dish or a sauce. Top a pizza with it as the Italians do (they call it rucola, yet another alias) or chop it up and sprinkle it over scrambled eggs, an omelette or a baked potato. Search the internet and you’ll quickly be awash in arugula recipes if you like; they include quesadillas, turkey pita sandwiches, sausage fettuccines, carrot pancakes, beef carpaccios—even a gimlet cocktail. Have a vegetable garden or a north-facing window? You can grow your own arugula. —Timothy Kelley

DID YOU KNOW? Historians believe arugula is the plant referenced in the Bible’s Old Testament book of Kings (II Kings 4:39).

“About three years ago when I first saw cherry blossom trees, I fell in love with pink and white flowers. I took this photograph on a rainy day as we walked next to the lake in Branch Brook Park in Newark. Walking through a maze of pink cherry blossoms amid the falling rain and mist was so cinematic that I had to risk getting my camera wet to take this shot. This year, you might just find me in a white dress standing beneath a cherry blossom tree holding my partner’s hand as we soak in the beauty and divine smell of the cherry blossoms.” — Pooja Sarin, North Brunswick
