It’s an awkward question for February and March, but I’ll pose it anyway: How are you doing with those New Year’s resolutions? I ask because this is the “health and wellness” issue, and those topics relate to the lifestyle choices we all make from day to day. Doing better with such choices is often the stuff of people’s start-the-year vows. If some of the self-improvements you planned for 2024 are still waiting on the launching pad, join the club. That’s human nature. (See page 14 for a no-guilt opportunity to revisit your resolutions.) But it’s not like you’re off the hook for the rest of the year. It’s up to you to continually recommit to your own health and wellness. And it’s our job at MORRIS & ESSEX to help you. Being physically active, for example, should be on your agenda, but it needn’t feel like arduous labor. On page 18 you’ll read about “virtual reality” workout games in which you may burn more calories than you realize because these are “games first and workouts second.” Then there’s the exercise value of martial arts: kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, karate and others. Learn on page 16 what these practices can do for you, how to get started and maybe even which one is best for your particular style. Your kids, of course, need to be active too. With spring on the way (we promise!), turn to page 9 for the lowdown on five organizations that can help your young athlete burn off that built-up energy and shape up at the same time. We don’t neglect the health of your family’s four-legged members either—see page 9 for places to get pets vaccinated. And there’s more health news in bite-sized doses on page 13. Not everything in this issue is about health and wellness, of course. Or is it? Yes, the warming, nourishing soups we showcase starting on page 28 are good for you as well as good. The redesigned Glen Ridge condo that now makes room for the whole family to cook together (page 20) sets an example for health and heartiness too, when you think about it. And the close-to-home getaways we describe on page 26? They may not directly improve your cholesterol numbers, but they can send your spirits soaring. In our interview with disability advocate and children’s book author Arielle Dance on page 10, you’ll learn of the serious health difficulties she’s dealt with and how she’s become a voice for people with disabilities that don’t necessarily show. A victim? Not Dance. “I am a true Jersey Girl!” she proudly declares. Protecting and enhancing your health, energy and outlook is the basis for good times. Wellness is ultimately about “living fully,” as the experts say. That—in our spacious, much-blessed area—is what we celebrate in the pages of MORRIS & ESSEX. After all, don’t they say you can start the year over again whenever you wish? Enjoy!

OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTIES.

PUPPY LOVE

SAY IT WITH CHOCOLATE

Dog’s name: Lulu, 3-year-old English bulldog (she’ll be 4 on March 28) Owners: Holland and Patrick Grumieaux of South Orange Four years ago Holland knew her sons, Hudson and Banks, would be off to college soon. At first reluctant to bring a dog into the family, she slowly changed her mind. “I think in the back of Holland’s mind, she was preparing for an empty nest,” Patrick says. So the parents searched far and wide for an English bulldog, a breed Holland “always loved.” Many of their phone calls and outreach went unanswered, until Banks discovered a pup in Amish Country, Pennsylvania. “We went to see her—and brought her home with us!” Patrick recalls. Lulu has since made herself at home, eating just about everything (except lettuce and celery) and playing ball with the family. “Holland keeps a jar of coconut oil next to the bed for Lulu,” Patrick says. “She will jump on the bed and stare at it to let us know she wants her three scoops.” Lulu is also a big fan of car rides and trips to her favorite places. “We will take her to the South Mountain Reservation and walk on the pavement or on paths,” Patrick says. “We will sit outside at restaurants and bring her to Home Depot, where she loves sitting in the cart while we walk the aisles. We live near Floods Hill in South Orange, so we walk around that area with Lulu’s dog friend Mousse and have friends in Newstead, where we have a standing Tuesday walk with another dog friend named Rolo.” Want to see your pet featured in a future issue? Send details and a photo of your dog, cat, bird, rabbit or other animal to rita.guarna@wainscotmedia.com.

The best part of Valentine’s Day? Chocolate, of course. And while no one will turn down a KitKat or Snickers, why not up your candy game with something locally made? Whether you’re looking for a treat for your sweetheart or an excuse to treat yourself, these local chocolate shops go beyond the ordinary: SMALL-BATCH PERFECTION

Give the gift of sophistication and glamor with Vesta Chocolate’s blend of artisanal quality and small-neighborhood sensibilities. Vesta’s flagship brick-and-mortar shop is easily accessible in Montclair, where the bonbons are designed to look like treasures. But don’t worry: One taste of these creations and you’ll know they’re meant to be eaten. You can also pick up cookies, baked goods or powdered hot cocoa here. • 598 Valley Rd., Suite 2, Montclair, 973.860.7136; vestachocolate.com

PURE IMAGINATION

You’ll be dazzled by what you find behind the doors of Emily’s Creations Chocolate Factory in Belleville. Specializing in multi-treat baskets and chocolate-covered fruit, the shop is a great place to grab a gift for someone special. Its themed and decorated chocolate-covered strawberries are as whimsical as they are delicious. • 112 Franklin St., Belleville, 973.751.2694

PINK AND SWEET

You can’t miss this storefront while traveling through Denville— Sweet Expressions by Geri is in the old Denville Movie Theater, and the bright pink marquee and repurposed ticket-box display make it unmistakable. Everything about this business is bright and cheerful, and whether you are looking for lollipops, custom cakes or rich truffles, Geri’s has you covered. • 26 Broadway, Denville, 973.625.0025; sweetexpressionsbygeri.com

HOLLYWOOD IN OUR BACKYARD

As film production crews worked on an unspecified project in Newark through the December holidays, many of us were reminded of the past blockbusters filmed in that city. That—plus the Academy Awards ceremony coming up March 10—is an excuse to look back at films that were shot in Essex County’s county seat as well as in Morris County’s county seat, Morristown, according to IMDb. How many do you remember? NEWARK: • Annie (1982) • The Dark Knight Rises • Exorcist II: The Heretic • Joker • The Many Saints of Newark • Private Parts • Riding in Cars With Boys • Rounders • Scent of a Woman (1992) • Spider-Man: Far From Home • United 93

KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE

As the weather starts to turn and we look forward to spring, it’s time to make sure your four-legged family members are up-to-date on all their shots, including for rabies. The virus is transferable between all mammals, often through bites, and takes the lives of hundreds of domestic pets each year. It is also a danger to humans, and vaccinating pets against it is part of keeping yourself and those around you safe. Pet owners can find free and low-cost rabies clinics throughout our counties. Here are places to get your pet vaccinated: • Associated Humane Societies, by appointment, 124 Evergreen Ave., Newark, 973.824.7080, ext. 118; mobileclinic@ahsppz.org • Morris County Free Rabies Clinic, March 2, Bloomingdale Senior Center; 101 Hamburg Tpke., Bloomingdale, 973.838.8959; morriscountynj.gov • Petco Pet Care, by appointment, 1111 Rte. 46, Parsippany– Troy Hills; stores.petco.com

CULINARY CORNER

Originally from Taiwan, boba (or bubble) tea has been gaining popularity in the U.S. in recent years thanks to its distinctive look, light sweetness and unique combination of milk tea and tapioca pearls. Try it at one of these recently opened shops: TALK OF THE TOWN

Customization is the name of the game at Livingston’s new boba shop What’s the Tea? You control everything that goes into your drink, from the amount of sugar to the amount of ice, and bold folks can even mix flavors. Whether it’s blending jasmine green tea with mint and lemon for the “Mediterranean Paradise” or perfecting a taro milk tea with popping bubbles, this menu is sure to delight. • What’s the Tea?, 16 E. REAL FRUIT, REAL FAST

WELCOME, NEW BUSINESSES! Morris and Essex counties have their share of shops, but there’s always room for more. Below are three new businesses we’re excited to visit: FINER THINGS FOR FIDO

Can’t quite control Cooper during bath time? Ruff to Fluff Bar in Montclair offers full grooming services for dogs in a friendly salon. Your pup can experience everything from haircuts and baths to dental cleaning and even hydrating masks. Now that’s a pampered pup! • 127 Valley Rd., Montclair, 888.262.4147; rufftofluffbar.com

Though its roots are in Canada, Real Fruit Bubble Tea has been stretching into the States, with a new location at the Rockaway Townsquare. Its large menu offers everything from honey milk tea to lychee ice cream with those iconic tapioca pearls, and Real Fruit is perfect for someone looking to try something new or seeking a new twist on an old favorite. • Real Fruit Bubble Tea, 301 Mt. STARTING A NEW CHAPTER

EXPAND YOUR PALATE

As you order a hot coffee and a delicious treat at Ethan & the Bean in Morristown, you’re helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities get the training they need to advance in the world. The new shop specializes in incredible brews, prepared by employees with disabilities—who get the support they need to succeed in the future. • 70 Speedwell Ave., Morristown, 973.988.3054; ethanandthebean.com

If you’re on Market Street in Newark, stop by Möge Tee, which has recently opened a new location there. Möge’s menu is expansive and also offers yogurt-based smoothies and fresh fruit yakult, a probiotic milk drink said to improve digestion. • Möge Tee, 194 Market St., Newark, 201.591.6844; mogeteeusa.com

Readers rejoice! You’ll all find something of interest at Chapter One Bookstore & More. Mendham’s new independent bookstore held its grand opening in January after operating as a pop-up shop. After a long winter indoors, spring brings the promise of a new season of outdoor youth sports. Whether it’s baseball, softball, lacrosse or something else, give your budding athlete a head start—or a chance to try something new—with these local clinics, lessons and club teams: • In Mountain Lakes, USA Sport Group runs an after-school tennis program from April 15 until June 10. It offers programs for every level, ages 3 to 15. Introduce your child to something new or a chance to hone skills. Info: usasportgroup.com • The Morristown Lady Colonials hold a weekend lacrosse clinic for pre-K to second grade on Sundays from 2 to 3:15 p.m. at Simons Field in Morris Plains. The goal is to spark interest and passion for the fastest-growing girls’ sport in the country. Info: ladycolonialslax.com • From April 1 to 5 the Florham Park Sports and Event Center is holding a multi-sports camp for all ages, which will include basketball, football and lacrosse. Info: indoorsportsandevents.com • Over in Montclair, USA Sports Group on Cedar Avenue and High Street is running an after-school basketball clinic open to all levels, from beginners to age 15. This clinic is both a great chance to try something new before committing to a school team and a place to meet new people and stretch one’s comfort zone. Info: usasportgroup.com • If your child is looking to do something different, Morristown has a branch of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, which is accepting new members. The group’s goal is to help students of all ages learn and compete in mountain biking. Info: martysreliable.com

FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS

‘Invisible’ No More In the children’s section of Essex County libraries or bookstores, you’ll find the bright orange cover of Dearest One, the debut book of local author and advocate Arielle Dance, Ph.D. It won the Fall BookFest 2023 award for Diversity & Multicultural Children’s Fiction and placed second for Family Children’s Fiction. Originally from Westfield in Union County, 35-year-old Dance, along with her wife and foster son, now calls West Orange home. Dance had an 11-year career with the American Cancer Society and advocates for those who have “invisible” disabilities such as endometriosis. How did Dearest One come about? It’s dedicated to my grandmother, Marjorie Dance, who died from breast cancer at 34. I never got to meet her. Dearest One is filled with the words of wisdom I would have loved to get from her. Why were you drawn toward children’s literature? I remember writing poetry as a child. One poem started: “I am a child with a lot to think about and a lot to say.” I don’t think that ever changed. I knew I wanted to write, though maybe not as a career, and felt that starting from the beginning, with children, would be the most impactful. I spent years querying publishers and agents, and Lantana Publishing was the only “yes” I heard. They focus on publishing BIPOC [black, indigenous and people of color] authors, utilize sustainable printing and donate books back into the community with each purchase. Outside of children’s literature, I started back in 2011 writing pieces for women’s health blogs about my experience with endometriosis. Eventually this morphed into sharing other disabled people’s experiences, and now I am a freelance writer. Much of your advocacy work has been about endometriosis and “invisible illnesses.” Yes. I was diagnosed with endometriosis as a teenager and have had six surgeries as a result—one this year. In my early 20s I also suffered from a pulmonary

embolism and had multiple blood clots on my lungs. I learned what it meant to live with these invisible illnesses, to look healthy on the outside but be broken on the inside. Was there an event that prompted you to dedicate yourself to this kind of advocacy? When I was younger, I thought I’d be a physician, but I eventually recognized all the ways I could make an impact without going to medical school. I got my master’s in women’s health and my doctorate in mindbody medicine. I learned that research and writing were where I thrived, and I spent years researching endometriosis from public health and sociological perspectives. I presented posters and sat on panels at a dozen conferences. I will gladly spend hours

MORRISANDESSEXMAG.COM

MSX.0224.friends.indd 10

10

talking about endometriosis—delays in diagnosis, the impact on relationships, the experiences of people of color, benefits of complementary and alternative medicine and addressing health equity. For me, this is partially about my lived experience but also the information I wish I had 20 years ago. What has been your most meaningful moment on your publishing journey? The illustrator, Jenny Duke, created the art purely based on my writing. She captured every moment well without every speaking to me. There’s a page with the title “Turn Your Face to the Sun,” and her illustration looks exactly like a photo of me in a sunflower field in Sussex County. Seeing my words come to life was the most meaningful. But soon I found deep meaning in the subsequent moments—people telling me how the book inspired them. The biggest challenge for me is comparing my work to others. I feel awful when my book isn’t doing as well as someone else’s. What is special about your relationship to the community? I am a true Jersey Girl! And I’m grateful for the local supporters of my work. From West Orange Public Library to Watchung Booksellers in Montclair, I have had amazing connections with other book lovers. I truly enjoy all the readings I have done at schools. How do you spend your spare time? In 2022 I returned to taking dance classes, something I hadn’t done formally since I was in college. I am in an adult tap class at Starr Dance Company in Roseland, although it has been challenging to get back in motion. What’s next for you in 2024? On the writing side, I am currently querying and pitching my new adult novel, a fictionalized memoir based on letters between me and my grandmother, and a children’s fiction manuscript, Miss Mimi’s Welcomes All. The children’s book won the Black Voices in Children’s Literature Writing Contest held by Free Spirit Publishing and Strive Publishing. It’s about dancing with disabilities. —Kirsten Meehan

Not all disabilities can be seen, as author and disability advocate Arielle Dance knows well, but all voices deserve to be heard.

HEALTH NEWS EXERCISE FOR ADULTS WITH HEALTH WOES

High-intensity interval training in water, often called aquatic HIIT (AHIIT) improves exercise capacity in adults with chronic conditions, including back pain, arthritis, chronic lung disease (COPD), type 2 diabetes and multiple sclerosis. It offers an alternative exercise option for people unable to perform land-based HIIT and has a similar impact, according to recent research. —BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine

KETO DIET MAY HELP FERTILITY IN WOMEN WITH PCOS

Resolutions, Take 2

ALL IS NOT LOST IF YOU ABANDONED YOUR PLAN TO IMPROVE YOUR DIET. YOU CAN GET BACK ON TRACK WITH A FEW EASY EATING ADJUSTMENTS. Though you’ve resolved to shed a few pounds this year, resisting the lure of festive food and decadent drinks is more difficult than you thought. There are over-the-top feasts with mounds of meat and comfort classics, get-togethers with buttery cookies and rich desserts, office socials with chocolatey sips and sugary cocktails. This can become one of those saints-orsinners situations in which guilt over a single lapse prompts a “What the heck!” downslide. But the fact is that there’s a sensible middle ground between the purity of self-denial and pure pigging out. (Consider this encouraging report: The New England Journal of Medicine says Americans overestimate the weight they gain between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. They think they’re putting on 5 new pounds when the weight they truly add averages 0.48 kilograms—just over 1 pound.) If folks can keep the weight off during the holidays, you can do it any time of year. That’s not to deny the danger. And it grows when you combine an overindulgence on processed foods, sugar and carbs with unfavorable lifestyle factors such as a lack of sufficient exercise and sleep. To help you avoid putting on unwanted pounds this year, heed a few of these tips: Plan ahead Consider marking all the get-togethers and parties you’ll be attending on a calendar so you can plan ahead. If you know you’ll be having a big meal, eat lighter on that day to

balance the extra calories you may consume. Fresh fruit, low-calorie yogurt and unsalted nuts are perfect snack options. Don’t skip the event if you can make it, and try not to go hungry because that will help you consume less. Be smart at the office The workplace can be a nutritional nightmare. Besides all the sweets your coworkers may put out on the break-room table, lunches and office parties can make it difficult for even the most health-conscious employee to make smart choices. Try to scope out the selection and choose a couple of your healthier favorites, such as salads with oil-and-vinegar-based dressings as well as fresh foods that have been steamed instead of fried. And don’t forget about portion control, especially at buffets and potlucks. Keep it to one plateful of food. Balance, don’t binge Carbohydrates are comforting, and it may seem there’s always an abundance of breads, cookies and other baked goods. You can enjoy those treats, but just like with day-today nutrition intake, balance is key. Be sure you balance carbs with protein for weight management. Lean protein from meat, poultry, fish and beans can boost metabolism as well as appetite-reducing hormones in the body. Aim to get at least 1 ounce of protein in each meal. Like protein, fiber is another nutrient that helps with weight management

MORRISANDESSEXMAG.COM

MSX.0224 health eating.indd 15

15

as it promotes the feeling of fullness, thus reducing the amount of food we eat. Fiberrich foods include veggies, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Serve healthy choices If you’re having people over, try to add balance to what is being served. For instance, put out a vegetable-based appetizer with a yogurt dip and fruit-based dessert. Avoid overloading charcuterie boards with processed meats and cheeses. Instead, top boards with nuts and fruit such as grapes, dates and figs. Bakers and cooks can make healthy modifications to recipes when possible. If you’re cooking dishes that call for heavy cream, for instance, consider using low-fat or skim milk instead—or substitute cream cheese or sour cream with Greek yogurt. Feel the burn Whether you’re counting calories or not, you know that a heaping plate of hors d’oeuvres can add up. And if burning off what you eat is a concern, plan to put in time to exercise. Check nutrition labels and do a little easy math. Can’t get enough of pigs in a blanket, for instance? One serving (approximately five store-bought frozen piggies) is 245 calories— and requires an hour on the treadmill at a moderate pace to burn off. But don’t consider exercise only a chore. Think about catching up with friends at a yoga or Zumba class instead of meeting up for mocha lattes at the coffee shop.

FIGHT TO BE FIT

MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING CAN MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE AN ACTION HERO, BUT IT’S ALSO JUST PLAIN GOOD FOR YOUR PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH. BY KIRSTEN MEEHAN Admit it: You’ve watched a fight scene in a movie, be it Jedi crossing lightsabers in Star Wars or the impressive hand-to-hand in John Wick, and thought, “It would be awesome to do that.” The characters look not just cool, but also powerful and in control. It’s an appealing combination—and, with the right training, it’s also an attainable one. Workouts and fitness routines that incorporate martial arts and combat sports training are becoming more people’s go-to gym activity: karate, jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, even mixed martial arts (MMA). On top of providing a world-class workout that ups your cardio, builds core strength and tones muscles, these disciplines are engaging and fun and can make exercise feel less like a chore. Damian Harley of Universal Martial Arts in Bloomfield has nearly 40 years of martial arts training and has earned black belts in tae kwon do, hapkido and jiu-jitsu. “Everyone wants a body that they saw somewhere else,” Harley says. “Our ideal bodies come from people who develop them because they need them, not because they want them—think of soldiers, or firemen. Martial arts put you in that position. You develop better arms because you need them to throw a better punch, rather than developing them because you want to change the way you look.” And the benefits are not just physical. “Martial arts give you a structured mind—a calmer mind,” says Harley. “You think less about how the world perceives you and more about how you perceive yourself. You’re competing against yourself, so your own growth becomes the reason you do something and the reason you progress.” These workouts can also be confidence boosters. People who train in martial arts or combat sports often walk a little taller, knowing they can protect themselves and their loved ones in difficult situations. Easy as it is to admit that something sounds intriguing, it’s harder to know where to start approaching it. However, the barrier to entry for this kind of training is not as high as it may seem. Here’s some advice to consider if you are thinking about jumping into martial arts or combat sports, for fitness or for fun:

• Start slowly. Nearly all of these workouts are high-im-

pact and can strain someone who is inexperienced, recovering from an orthopedic injury or surgery, or needs to work around any kind of limitation. Often, higher-level training in something like jiu-jitsu involves sparring, which by its nature includes contact with another person. Because of this, jumping directly into a group class may not be ideal for a beginner, unless that class is explicitly for those just starting out. In a class setting, it can be difficult for an instructor to keep an eye on everyone’s form, and an incorrect form is the easiest way to strain or pull something. “At the end of the day, it’s the teacher, rather than the martial art, that is going to help you succeed,” says Harley. A good instructor can modify and tone down training to accommodate any changes a person might need. And that includes working with seniors. “The oldest student I’ve ever had was born in 1945,” says Harley. “She got her black belt and was fighting my 15-year-olds.” • Think carefully about your discipline. Though they often get grouped together, there are vast differences between different martial arts, ranging from the parts of the body they focus on to the kind of training they encourage. Cardio kickboxing emphasizes fast movement and an elevated heart rate, for example, while karate stresses strikes and blocks and jiu-jitsu puts the focus on grapples and ground fighting. Each of these disciplines also has a deep, detailed philosophy behind it that is often embodied in the kinds of physical movements it demands. Do your research before walking into a class, and be aware of what that martial art will demand from you. If you don’t want to be on the ground, jiu-jitsu might not be the best place for you. • Stay consciously focused. These workouts are just as much mental exercises as they are physical. They require that a person stay engaged with his or her body and the movements it’s making, rather than zoning into passive movement as people often do on treadmills or elliptical machines, or even on a run. If such spacing out is your favorite part of exercise, this training may not be for you.

5 KINDS OF MARTIAL ARTS

Martial arts come not only from all corners of the globe, but also from all periods of history. Here’s a rundown on a few of the more popular ones you may encounter in a gym: Brazilian jiu-jitsu: This discipline focuses on grapples and ground fighting. The goal is the get an opponent on the ground and then put that opponent into a submission hold he or she cannot escape from. It’s high-contact and often taught for self-defense. Cardio kickboxing: These classes combine general punch and kick techniques from many other martial arts to create a routine that elevates heart rate and builds strength and stamina. Often, cardio kickboxing focuses more on group classes rather than one-on-one sparring. Karate: Having originated in Okinawa, Japan, karate is an upright martial art that focuses on striking. It aims to use punches, kicks, knees, elbows and open hands to block an opponent’s attacks and then to disable that opponent with a quick strike of one’s own. Mixed martial arts (MMA): The most modern discipline on this list, MMA is a full-contact sport which, as the name suggests, combines many different techniques from many different martial arts. Punches, kicks and grapples are all allowed in an MMA spar. Often those who practice MMA have backgrounds in other combat sports as well. Muay Thai kickboxing: While kickboxing is a general term, Muay Thai is a specific discipline within it. Originally from Thailand, it is sometimes referred to as the “art of eight limbs” for the eight “points of contact”—two hands, two feet, two elbows, two knees—that you strike with. These classes usually involve sparring and contact.

READY, HEADSET, GO!

VIRTUAL REALITY IS REVOLUTIONIZING THE WORKOUT GAME, WITH LOTS OF OPTIONS TO MAKE STAYING IN SHAPE ACTUALLY FUN.

The last few years have proved that many of us can work from anywhere—why not work out from anywhere too? That’s the idea behind virtual reality (VR) fitness, an exercise trend that uses cutting-edge technology to create a workout that takes you, in effect, anywhere in the world. The concept of VR is relatively straightforward—you strap on a boxy headset that blocks out sounds and sights so that you’re fully immersed in the “metaverse.” But you’re not merely watching a 3-D film on the big screen— you’re interacting via hand-held controllers that you punch, swing, lift or slide. You’re strengthening your muscles, burning calories and getting in your cardio. Except that here you could be doing tabata atop the Great Wall of China or biking through the San Fernando Valley, no passport required. “Exercising is more convenient with virtual reality,” says Newark-based personal trainer Jamal Jean-Jacques. “You no longer have to drive to a gym and wait for equipment or rush to a fitness class. With VR, you can work out from the comfort of your own home and when it fits into your schedule. And you don’t need an elaborate set up—just clear the space of any objects or obstacles to be safe.” VR fitness is also changing the notion that video games are a sedentary hobby that requires nothing beyond cognitive skills and concentration. Many VR video games (such as Beat Saber or Ragnarok) stealthily work in the physical stuff. They’re games first and workouts second. And indeed, VR workouts share the appeal of the video game—you’re so immersed in this technological world that you don’t even realize how hard you’re exerting your body. But the systems are working for you in the background. Most workouts can log your progress and provide instant feedback so users can ensure they’re meeting their daily, monthly and overall goals. Many VR workouts—Quest 2 and Quest 3, for example—can be played via the Oculus platform, a headset from the brand Oculus, a subsidiary of Facebook (now known as Meta). Starting at $299, it includes the headset, two

touch controllers and a charger, with many add-on accessories. Once you have the platform, the apps themselves are pretty much chump change. A basic “beginner’s app” is FitXR, with which $10 a month gets you ondemand high-intensity interval training (HIIT), dance and boxing classes choreographed by experienced trainers—and submerges you in different environments. You can also work out in real time with up to six friends. Or try Supernatural ($20 a month), which features four types of workouts with trained coaches—Boxing, Flow, Meditate and Stretch—and a personal leaderboard to keep you going. Another option is Holofit, with which you can use your body weight to ski or box, or participate with your at-home bike, rowing machine or elliptical. These interactive workouts take you from San Francisco to Saturn, counting calories burned and letting you save your stats in the app as you try to beat your scores next time. It’ll cost you about $12 a month. There’s also VZfit ($10 per month), similar conceptually to Holofit but with technology that combines with Google Street View to take you on real streets across the globe. All of these apps have free seven-day trials, perfect if you’re unsure but want to try something new. They also come with built-in communities you can choose to take advantage of if your intrinsic motivation is lacking. Prefer to become part of a community in person? VR fitness studios are gradually popping up across the country, one being San Francisco-based Blackbox VR, which combines virtual reality fitness with real-life dynamic resistance training. Here you’ll have access to equipment that helps shape and strengthen your body. There’s also ThriVR24 in Dallas, where participants can fly, box, bike or run thanks to VR tech. So, whether you’re ready for a new workout regimen or are simply an early adopter when it comes to new trends and tech, VR fitness could just be the thing to take your fitness routine to another dimension.

TOO MANY COOKS? IN A SPACIOUSLY REDESIGNED GLEN RIDGE CONDO, THERE’S NO SUCH THING. Design by Tracey Stephens Interior Design Photography by Wing Wong, Memories TTL Text by Donna Rolando

Like a cherry atop a special treat, there was something inherently sweet built into the recent redesign of a Glen Ridge condo. One of the homeowners, who loves to bake, fuels her passion with a setup that puts all the tools of the trade within easy reach—then hides them away, avoiding clutter. When it’s time to bake holiday cookies, she, her husband and three grown children—including a college student who still lives at home—get into the act with a spacious layout that makes room for all. Although it’s a downsize from their Montclair center-hall colonial, the lady of the house says, “This is a great kitchen for the five of us to cook in together. We always make my mom’s Christmas cookie recipe, and it’s easier with all the popups.” With this intuitive design by Tracey Stephens of the eponymous Montclair design firm, even the mixer is

tucked out of sight until it’s time for it to pop up—voila!—out of its island abode. Similarly, Stephens gave cutting boards and other essentials a home in deep pull-out drawers beside the KitchenAid induction range with its stainless-steel hood. Even the Kohler Stages 33 sink with a Brizo Odin SmartTouch faucet has a work station that is a cook’s delight, as the owner appreciates. Making style fit life was the chief goal of this redesign, and that didn’t stop with Christmas cookies. “I always start with style before function because the layout and configuration have to be right,” explains Stephens. In this case, an awkwardly placed peninsula landed the kitchen at the top of the couple’s hit list when they moved to this condo in a recycled industrial building in 2020. “They wanted more of a free-flowing space,”

Stephens recalls. To honor the family’s love of socializing, the designer (working with project manager Beth Bernasconi) made sure that the new island didn’t similarly block the flow of guests and family and could serve as a buffet station. Since the completion of the project in May 2022, the kitchen at last connects with the dining and living rooms in an open plan as intended. Modern is the vibe in the new kitchen, from the handblown-glass orb chandelier with geometric branches (Hammerton Studio) to the quartz (with a veined Carrara effect) slabs blanketing all the counters and even the backsplash. Stephens planned a large slab (MSI Calacatta Laza) for the four-seat island, but the elevator was too tight. Rather than compromise, she had a crane carry the quartz up through the balcony, making for a dramatic story as well as a dramatic look.

MORRISANDESSEXMAG.COM

MSX.1023.tracey stevens glen ridge.indd 22

When the contemporary-minded homeowners shunned a white palette, Stephens stepped in with Graphite custom cabinets (Showplace Cabinetry) with minimalistic doors. “The prior design style was kind of boring,” she says, recalling brown wood cabinets that had seen better days. Finding opportunity even in smaller details, she infused walnut accents into the polishednickel cabinet handles to harmonize with the rest of the home and add warmth. “It was just kind of a serendipitous bonus,” she says, revealing how the black walnut came to the rescue when an attractive trim was needed. Walnut also stands out at the island in the eye-catching silhouette of the Norman Cherner stools by Modclair, which the homeowner calls “unbelievably comfortable.” In the old design, Stephens says, “There was no thoughtfulness about storage and

organization, another big element we provided.” Rather than a deep pantry with unexplorable recesses, Stephens provided a full-height cabinet with pull-out shelves and spice racks. A breakfast station makes good use of the space under the cabinet microwave. During this project, the homeowners emphasized sustainability, thus the decision to install an induction range and use recycled components when possible. Salvaging the hardwood flooring would have met this goal, but the peninsula demo proved too extensive. On a mission to match the rest of the area flooring, Stephens says, “We worked long and hard to get the stain color right, and it’s pretty close.” Sustainability took a giant step forward in the reno of the bathroom, which Stephens infused with recycled glass on the shower bench and the vanity, where it makes an impression against the greige-stained maple (Showplace Cabinetry).

“I thought that was cool,” says the homeowner of the repurposed glass, while Stephens describes a “stunning countertop” in Palladian Gray from Vetrazzo. More than eye candy, the vanity gets the job done with docking stations for hair tools and room for both husband and wife to get ready at double Nantucket sinks with brushed-nickel faucets. Here again, the original layout clashed with this family’s lifestyle. Says the wife: “It wasn’t well laid out. It had a sort of old tub and a stall shower, and we weren’t really going to use an old, short tub.” Stephens listened and gave the couple a more functional large shower, which she decked with Moroccan tile from Zellige in a modern stacked pattern. “There’s actually three ways to take a shower,” including a rain shower, she explains. A frameless shower door (Elliott Glass) completes the look, and grab bars assure safety. Large-format porcelain (Wayne Tile) offers

color variations in the look of concrete and stone, while ample lighting comes from Visual Comfort’s Milan rectilinear sconces flanking the mirrored medicine cabinets (Kohler Catalan) and recessed lighting. Other features are a half wall for privacy at the dual-flush (sustainable) toilet, custom cabinetry for pull-out hampers (Rev-A-Shelf) and one of the homeowner’s favorites: radiant heat, so no cold feet. Thanks to the reno, hotel luxury is now waiting for them without their having to pack a suitcase. This Glen Ridge family wanted to downsize, but they didn’t want to compromise. Thanks to this redesign, they don’t have to. “We accomplished the goals of improving the layout functionality and especially storage and significantly upgraded this style,” says Stephens. The result? Mom’s cookie recipe is not in any danger, and there’s ample room for each family member to lick a spoon.

COLD PLAY

Tropical beaches can wait. This year, why not visit a place where winter is in its glory? Wintertime “getaways” often invite you to escape the cold and snow for a warmer clime. But there’s another way. It may not be your first thought if you’re tired of scraping your windshield, but have you considered going full-on wintry? The five destinations here, all within easy driving distance of Morris and Essex counties, don’t evade the cold; they celebrate it. Some boast the familiar delights of skiing and snowboarding, but all have further enticements too. Whether you seek athletic adventure, stunning vistas in white or unbelievable steaming gourmet dinners, each of these locales is a geographical love letter to the season. Why not take advantage of February break and take your family someplace where all is calm and bright, and snow days still mean magic?

LAKE PLACID, NEW YORK

A four-and-a half-hour straight shot up I-87 will take you to this resort, host of both the 1932 and the 1980 Olympic Games and still a mecca for Northeast winter sports. The Olympic Center here is still open and functional, providing both a chance to walk through sports history and an unforgettable place to ice-skate. Lake Placid boasts some of the best of just about anything you could want to do outside in the cold. In the spirit of its Olympic legacy, it will host the Adirondack Tour de Ski on Feb. 10 and 25. This competitive cross-country ski event spans six venues as well as multiple distances and terrains. It’s open to all, as well as to the public for viewing. On the slopes: The iconic Whiteface Mountain is one of the High Peaks of the Adirondack Mountains. It has 94 trails, 11 lifts and the greatest vertical drop on an East Coast ski trail. Duck inside and warm up at the mountainside Legacy Lodge, which has a heated patio, food and drink options and spectacular views. The more adventurous may enjoy the 30-foot-high toboggan shoot, which sends riders flying onto the frozen Mirror Lake. Those looking for a something more relaxing can head over to Bear Den Mountain for a mixedterrain snowshoe over breathtaking scenery. Off the slopes: If you can’t get enough of the Lake Placid views, check out The Cottage, a café situated right on the edge of Mirror Lake. Its menu has something for everyone, including pub favorites and extensive vegetarian options. Those looking for a day trip and a chance to stock up on pancake essentials should check out South Meadow Farm Maple Sugarworks, a family-run maple sugaring operation with an operational boiler vat and sugarhouse an easy drive away from downtown. NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK

Snow and ice only make this Natural Wonder of the World more breathtaking, and the town around it is ready to delight and awe. About six hours away by car, Niagara County is more than just the famous state park where the falls are located. Visitors can now step into the Cave of the Winds, the closest observation point to the falls themselves, year-round. The area is also a rich historical site and includes Fort Niagara, where professional reenactors bring several eras of history to life. A special Winter Warriors event, exploring the hardships of winter battles during the Revolutionary War, is being held there Feb. 17–18. On the slopes: Wintertime hikers will rejoice at Wilson-Tuscarora State Park, where there is a four-mile trail perfect for snowshoeing. Bond Lake Park is another favorite spot for that activity; it also includes 13 miles of free cross-country ski trials. The local favorite activity, however, is snowmobiling. The miles and miles of wide-open State Park trails make this an ideal snowmobiling destination, and there are many options around the county for rentals and lessons. Off the slopes: The Niagara Region is one of the few places in the country that produce ice wine. It employs a process that includes letting grapes freeze on the vine, creating a unique, sweet flavor. Arrowhead Spring Vineyards offers tours, tastings and a full menu of lunch, dinner and hors d’oeuvre options. For more information: niagarafallsusa.com

DIRECTIONS Cut the onion into small cubes. Using a pressure cooker, turn on the “Frying” mode for 15 minutes and fry the onion until soft for 3 minutes. Cut the meat into small pieces and fry with the onion for 7-8 minutes. Make a cross-shaped incision on the tomato, pour boiling water over it. Drain the water, carefully remove the skin and cut into cubes. Add to meat and onions, fry until the end of the program. Add rice, tomato paste, salt, spices and water. Start the pressure cooker’s “Soup/Stew” program for 60 minutes. Five minutes before cooking, add fresh herbs. At the end of cooking, leave in the keep warm mode for 20-30 minutes. Enjoy!

“I’d swap in a short-grain rice such as arborio or paella rice, as these grains will hold their shape better and add a burst of texture and flavor. Another swap idea is to use grass-fed sirloin beef tips or lamb instead of pork shoulder, for those seeking leaner cuts of protein.” —Lori R. Lee, registered dietitian nutritionist, The Wellness Center of Northwest Jersey, Succasunna

TRADITIONAL ZUREK SOUP Yields 4 servings INGREDIENTS For the fermented rye flour starter n 5 Tbs. of rye flour n 2 cups of purified water For the soup n 35 oz. of smoked pork bones n 10 oz of bacon n 3 qts. of water n 5 allspice berries n 3 bay leaves n 4 white sausages n 1 onion n 3 garlic cloves n 1 Tbs. of dried marjoram n 2 Tbs. of salt n 1 Tbs. of oil Add-ons to choose n 2 boiled potatoes n 2 boiled eggs

DIRECTIONS Making the fermented rye starter (zakwas) In a clean glass jar, mix rye flour with warm, purified water. Cover the jar with a linen cloth or gauze. Place it in a cold (68°F), dark place. Stir zakwas twice a day. After 5-7 days it is ready to use. Cooking the soup Pour water into a big pot. Add allspice berries and bay leaves and bring to boil. Reduce the heat. Add smoked pork bones, bacon and white sausage. Cook for about 30 minutes, but don’t bring it to a boil! In the meantime, peel and dice an onion, then fry it in oil. Take off the meat. Dice the bacon and cut the white sausage into slices or bigger chunks. You may also remove meat from the bones and dice it. Stir zakwas for about 1 minute, making sure there are no lumps. Bring the soup to boil, reduce the heat, then slowly start pouring zakwas into it, stirring all the time. Cook for about 5 minutes. Turn off the heat. Add onion, meat, crushed garlic cloves, marjoram and salt.

“This is a fun and healthy recipe for any time of year because it is ‘a meal in a bowl’ and satisfies all of your macros in one recipe. Rye contains gluten; therefore, the rye flour is not suitable for gluten-free diets. I’d recommend a buckwheat-based starter instead.” —Lori R. Lee, registered dietitian nutritionist, The Wellness Center of Northwest Jersey, Succasunna

MORRIS

COUNTY’S

TOP DENTISTS

2024 TO HELP YOU FIND GREAT DENTAL CARE, Morris & Essex magazine commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of hundreds of practicing and active dentists across Morris County. Dentists were asked to choose which of their peers they consider the very best, across seven different practice areas— endodontics, general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics. All the final honorees were fact-checked with the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System. The highest vote getters within each specialty who are in good standing with the state are included here in the 2024 “Morris County’s Top Dentists” list. There are many other good dentists practicing in Morris County who may not be included on this list; we recommend that you consider “Morris County’s Top Dentists” and other resources before scheduling your next dental procedure.

difficulty breastfeeding and allows the baby to transfer milk better, gain weight and have less reflux and colic. The benefit to an adult is that it promotes better nasal breathing, improving breathing issues and/or sleep apnea.

The dentists recognize that first impressions are critical from the initial moments of contact with the kindest and most devoted team to the waiting room’s ambiance, patients get a picture of how they will be treated and if it’s the right practice for their family. The dentists also share cell phone numbers with patients, finding that it offers peace of mind and promotes patient physician trust.

At Aesthetic Family Dentistry, it’s all about the best patient experience possible. For example, patients feel more comfortable having a 3D scanner create their impressions. Aesthetic Family Dentistry is especially proficient when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of TMJ, sleep breathing disorders and headaches. Additionally, there’s a wide array of traditional and advanced dental procedures, as well as cosmetic dentistry, Botox and a variety of dermal fillers.

The dentists look for homeopathic options whenever possible to avoid the use of drugs and chemicals. For many procedures, they’ll use an ozone generator which kills bacteria, viruses, and fungus without the use of chemicals or other medications. Their newest addition to technology is called the Light Scalpel, used to treat infants, children and adults lip and tongue ties. This helps new moms with infants having

ALAN KRAUSE, BUILT RELATIONSHIPS WITH HIS PATIENTS over the years as well as shadowing dental specialists throughout dental school who often saw their patients for only a single visit, Dr. Evan Krause realized the impact that personalized family care has on the health and wellness of patients. Upon completion of dental school at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in 2013, graduating as one of the top 10 students in his class, Dr. Evan knew that Krause Comprehensive Dental Care would provide the multifaceted experience he sought. The family practice would allow him to apply his knowledge of a wide array of advanced dental and surgical techniques while fostering lasting relationships with his patients. Krause Comprehensive Dental Care is a dedicated and diversified practice where the dentists give their undivided attention to patients of all ages. Offering “Experience with Continuing Excellence,” the doctors use stateof-the-art equipment as their driving force in providing efficiency, comfort

and the utmost in quality dental care. With each passing year, the doctors search out the newest technologies that check all the boxes to raise the bar in diagnostics, detection and treatment. When speaking about the practice’s staff, Dr. Evan’s highest praise is a reflection of the patients’ glowing reviews. The caring and compassionate team know just how to find the perfect balance between doing the best job possible while making anxious patients at ease. A Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, Dr. Evan lectures on the various applications of digital dentistry and served as a part-time clinical faculty member at Columbia University, teaching senior dental students CAD/CAM and restorative dentistry. Dr. Evan always takes a comprehensive approach with his patients emphasizing the whole patient rather than just the teeth for optimal well-being.

ADAM KIMOWITZ is all it takes to see the passion that he has for his work and for his patients. His father started their practice 40 years ago, and although they offer general family dental care such as cleanings, fillings and root canal for patients of all ages, Dr. Kimowitz with the help of his father took their practice several steps further as they continue to focus on complex oral rehabilitation, placing and restoring hundreds of implants yearly. He and his father are driven by a need to help those who have been socially affected by their teeth. “If their teeth are so damaged that they don’t smile, they often have trouble with their personal relationships and are perceived differently than they would like,” he says. Many of the practice’s patients’ teeth have been affected by a variety of diseases, and they are psychologically scarred as a result. “It’s an honor to help such people,” he says. “We look at them as patients, not just mouths. address their fears and concerns and feel successful once we connect with them, so that they trust us to help them.” Dr. Kimowitz and his father create not only new smiles and a second chance for their patients, but relationships with them as well. As the treatment becomes more complex, so does the relationship. “I take the trust and responsibility that my patients place in me very seriously and hold myself accountable for the results,” he says. For those who are trapped in a never-ending cycle of root canals and pain, he takes pride in transforming their lives in such a meaningful way. The office is equipped with the latest technology and equipment so that they can achieve the best results: a patient can be outfitted with an entirely new set of teeth in a mere three weeks. “At the end of the day, we want every patient to achieve the outcome they are looking for and be pain-free.”with their continued growth in the future.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Seoul On The Seine We’ve all heard of the world’s grand cuisines, but in an era when consumption by camera comes first, neither Italian nor Japanese—nor any other global fare—can match the social-media engagement of Korean food. That means, according to a 2023 study by the English adventure travel firm The Bucket List Company, that people post more photos, answer more forum questions and tweet more thoughts about kimchi than about pizza and pasta, sushi and sandwiches. But that’s not the only reason why I’d been longing to try Eli’s Eatery, a Korean “fusion” restaurant that recently opened in Morris Plains. The owners are the successful team behind Woodam in Morris Plains and Bann in Manhattan, and they use time-honored French culinary techniques (that’s where the “fusion” comes into play) to prepare their new restaurant’s traditional Korean menu. A friend and I visited on a cold and quiet Sunday night. We arrived early and were the only dine-in customers at the time (other parties later arrived), though a steady stream of to-go orders kept the kitchen busy all evening. With the modern dining room to ourselves, we didn’t feel rushed to order and even chatted up our server for a few minutes. I couldn’t contain my excitement when it came time to ask for appetizers, and I suggested three of my favorite dishes: Korean fried chicken, japchae and kimchi kimbap. The first to arrive was japchae, a plate overflowing with piping hot glass noodles and stir-fried beef and veggies. My friend hadn’t tried japchae before, and she claimed it was the best-tasting noodle dish she’s ever had. I had similar enthusiasm as I relished every bite of the tender beef strips and slippery noodles. Our server delivered the next two apps shortly after, and we quickly dove into the kimbap (commonly spelled gimbap). The cool, sushi-like pieces contained rice

and the house kimchi, a mild fermented cabbage. They’re ideal for vegetarians (other kimbap options include beef, spicy pork, shrimp and sea bass), and they were the perfect complement to the sweet and spicy wings. The bite-sized chicken was double-fried (these were extra crispy and not overly oily!) and were bursting with flavor thanks to the honey chili glaze. The plate came with six wings: At the time, I had wished it had more! After three satisfying appetizers, we thankfully still had room to share two rice-filled entrées. Even before it was set on our table, the sizzling stone pot of dol sot bibimbap quickly drew our oohs and ahhs. Our reactions intensified after we mixed and sampled spoonfuls from the medley of white rice, fried egg, bean sprouts, scallions, corn and other veggies and tofu (our choice of optional protein). The hot pot kept all the ingredients toasty, and the accompanying spicy gochujang sauce lifted the flavor to new levels of yumminess. The second shared dish, kalbijim, was a generous portion of beef short ribs simmered in a sweetened ginger soy garlic sauce. The tender, fall-off-thebone meat was palate-pleasing on its own, but the true treat for the taste buds came when we combined the ribs with the sauce and the side of white rice. It provided the feel of enjoying a favorite comfort food at home. I downed the majority of the bibimbap and kalbijim and rice, a move that threatened to push my stomach beyond its capacity. My friend, who felt full after only a couple of bites of our mains, agreed with me that we should pass on after-dinner sweets—though we vowed to try more menu items on our next visit. I’m excited just thinking about it. —Darius Amos

“My mom, Sara Power, took this photo of me at Cooper Gristmill in Chester in August. Since then, we have come back to do many more ballet photo shoots at this location because we love how versatile it is. This spot is beautiful and has many great features like the tunnel, river, bridge and the mill itself. They provide opportunities for experimenting with different lighting and poses, and the setting is perfect for anyone to enjoy a quiet day any time of year. “ —Katelyn Power, Randolph
